An animated clip shows a big orange X on a blue background. It explodes and letters and numbers come out of it in all directions and float around.

Mathemagician Eric appears on screen. He’s in his mid-twenties. He has short dark brown hair and a beard. He wears a red T-shirt with the show’s logo, blue jeans and red Tennis shoes.

The screen turns red and the logo of the show appears next. It reads "MathXplosion." Meanwhile, cones, cubes and dices float around it.

Kids voices sing a song with lyrics that go
WHAT A HIT
IT'S NOT A TRICK
IT'S MATHXPLOSION
JUST FOR YOU
COOL AND NEW
MATHXPLOSION!

The episode starts with Eric standing in a workroom, holding a large calculator. He stands over a large grid that blinks in colours when he speaks.

Eric says DID YOU KNOW THAT IT'S EASY
TO ADD ALL THE NUMBERS
IN A 3-BY-3 BLOCK
OF DATES ON A CALENDAR
IN YOUR HEAD WITHOUT
USING A CALCULATOR?
HUH, IT'S TRUE.
DID YOU JUST SHAKE
YOUR HEAD NO?
HMM.
I'LL PROVE IT.
YOU SEE THIS 3-BY-3
BLOCK OF DATES?

A big yellow square is showed on the grid.

He continues
THE SUM OF ALL
THESE NUMBERS IS...
135.

The number appears as a caption inside.

He continues
WANNA KNOW HOW
I DID IT?
WELL, STICK AROUND.

He looks at the calculator and magically it changes colours. A ball rolls on top all the way to one edge and back.

He says WEIRD.
NICE.

He ends up with glasses on and smiling.

Next, Eric gets ready to start a new project.

He says
THIS WORKS FOR
ANY 3-BY-3 BLOCK
ANYWHERE ON A
CALENDAR PAGE.
IT WORKS FOR ANY
MONTH, TOO.
BEHOLD, 9 NUMBERS.
THE TRICK TO THIS TRICK
IS TO LOOK ONLY AT THE
MIDDLE NUMBER.
IN THIS CASE,
NUMBER 15.

As he speaks, a dynamic square is placed over the grid. It enlarges and reduces as he goes. The square stops and stays at number 15.

He continues
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO
IS MULTIPLY THE MIDDLE
NUMBER BY 9.

The caption changes to "15 times 9."

Eric says ONE TRICK FOR DOING
THIS IN YOUR HEAD IS
TO MULTIPLY IT
BY 10 FIRST.
15 TIMES 10 IS
PRETTY EASY.
150.

The caption changes to "15 times 10 equals 150."

Eric continues
THEN SUBTRACT THE
ORIGINAL NUMBER.
150 MINUS
15 IS 135.

The caption changes to "150 minus 15 equals 135."

Eric continues
IN THE MEANTIME
CLOSE YOUR EYES
AND WAVE YOUR ARMS
IN A MYSTERIOUS WAY
TO CONJURE THE POWERS
OF THE CALENDAR AND
BUILD SUSPENSE.

A clip shows the whole scene in red, as if it was part of a dream.

Eric says YOUR FRIENDS WILL BE AMAZED
TO SEE YOU ADD SO QUICKLY.
NOW LET ME SHOW YOU
THAT THIS REALLY WORKS.
7 PLUS 8 EQUALS
PLUS 9 EQUALS PLUS 14
EQUALS PLUS 15
EQUALS PLUS 16
EQUALS PLUS 21
EQUALS PLUS 22
EQUALS PLUS 23
EQUALS... 135!

Eric checks the numbers using the calculator. As he adds the total, the squares in the grid change colour. In the end, the caption changes to "135." He smiles, pleased.

Eric says THE NUMBER IN THE MIDDLE
IS THE AVERAGE OF THE NUMBERS
AROUND IT.
IN FACT, IF YOU ADD ALL
NUMBERS AND DIVIDE BY 9
YOU'LL GET YOUR
MIDDLE NUMBER AGAIN.
WORKS EVERY TIME!

(music plays)

He does it again and uses the calculator to check on it. The caption changes to "15."

Eric draws a circle and colours it inside. He taps on it and a new clip plays. A hand appears on screen. Next, the hand that was open closes. As he speaks, dynamic arrows show the months corresponding to each knuckle in the hand.

He says SPEAKING OF CALENDARS
AND DATES, HERE'S A FUN
WAY TO REMEMBER HOW MANY
DAYS ARE IN EACH MONTH.
CLOSE YOUR LEFT
HAND, KNUCKLES UP.
SAY THE MONTHS OF
THE YEAR OUT LOUD.
STARTING WITH YOUR BABY
FINGER, WHICH IS JANUARY.
THE AREA NEXT TO IT IS
FEBRUARY AND SO ON.
YOUR FOURTH KNUCKLE
IS JULY, BUT SKIP YOUR
THUMB AND TOUCH THAT SAME
KNUCKLE AGAIN FOR AUGUST.
THEN WORK YOUR WAY BACK
TO THE BABY KNUCKLE.
THE MONTHS YOU SAY WHEN
YOU TOUCH A KNUCKLE
ALL HAVE 31 DAYS.
THE MONTHS IN BETWEEN
THE KNUCKLES HAVE 30 DAYS.

The captions show number 31 for the knuckle to the left and 30 for the one to the right. Next, the exceptions of 28 and 29 for the month of february corresponding to the knuckle second from the left.

He continues
EXCEPT FEBRUARY WHICH
CHANGES FROM 28 TO 29 DAYS
EVERY 4 YEARS.

Eric appears back in the workroom.

He says SO PICK A BLOCK OF
DATES AND TRY THIS AMAZING
CALENDAR TRICK FOR
YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY.
FUN WITH NUMBERS,
IT'S NOT MAGIC...
IT'S MATH.

A big explosion brings the show’s logo back on the screen.
