(Music plays)

An animated clip shows a big orange X on a blue background. It explodes and letters and numbers come out of it in all directions and float around.

Mathemagician Eric appears on screen. He’s in his mid-twenties. He has short dark brown hair and a beard. He wears a red T-shirt with the show’s logo, blue jeans and red Tennis shoes.

The screen turns red and the logo of the show appears next. It reads "MathXplosion." Meanwhile, cones, cubes and dices float around it.

Kids voices sing a song with lyrics that go
WHAT A HIT
IT'S NOT A TRICK
IT'S MATHXPLOSION
JUST FOR YOU
COOL AND NEW
MATHXPLOSION!

The episode starts with Eric standing in a workroom, unfolding a small piece of yellow paper with the drawing of a bird. As he unfolds it, completely, the little bird tweets.

Eric says DID YOU KNOW THAT
YOU CAN USE MATH
TO MAKE SOME
REALLY COOL ART?
ALSO, YOU CAN USE
TESSELLATIONS,
OR REPEATING PATTERNS,
AS I LIKE TO CALL THEM,
TO TURN ONE THING
INTO ANOTHER.
HERE, WATCH ME CHANGE
A FISH INTO A BIRD.

(music plays)

He takes a paper sheet with drawings of fish. He rubs it using his hand and it introduces a clip.

Eric says A TESSELLATION IS A
REPEATING PATTERN
WITH NO OVERLAPS OR
GAPS BETWEEN SHAPES.
YOU CAN USE THEM TO CREATE
AMAZING ARTISTIC ILLUSIONS
WHERE ONE SHAPE
TURNS INTO ANOTHER.
THAT'S CALLED
METAMORPHOSIS.
AND I'LL SHOW YOU
HOW IT WORKS.

Eric gets ready to work. The screen shows him by the large table with colourful paper sheets, scissors, a ruler, some printings with patterns on it, a pencil and an eraser. He draws a square.

Eric says YOU START WITH
A SQUARE.
THEN, CHANGE THE
SHAPE OF ONE SIDE
AND DRAW THE SAME CHANGE
ON THE OTHER SIDE,

As he adds the new shapes to the sides, they blink.

Eric continues
JUST LIKE THAT.
REPEAT ON THE REMAINING
TWO SIDES AS WELL.
NOW, ERASE THE
ORIGINAL SQUARE
AND KEEP ONLY
THIS NEW OUTLINE.

(music plays)

He clears out the original square shape and that leaves the new drawing only.

Eric says NOW, PUT ON YOUR
ARTIST'S HAT.

He puts on a beret and French music plays.

He continues
OUI, OUI.
ROTATE YOUR OUTLINE AND
LOOK FOR HIDDEN SHAPES,
SUCH AS ANIMALS.
I THINK I SEE A BIRD
AND A FISH MAYBE?
(Bubble sounds play)

Eric continues
I'LL MAKE THE BIRD MORE
BIRDLIKE AND THE FISH
MORE FISHLIKE,
JUST LIKE THAT.
NEXT, SEPARATE
YOUR TWO SHAPES.
PICK A PAPER COLOUR
FOR EACH ONE.

He draws a line in the center of the original design and then cuts out the paper pieces. Next. he moves them on top of the colourful paper sheets. He transfers the design of the bird on a blue paper sheet and the one for the fish one an orange paper sheet. The drawing is now in numerous copies.

Eric says I'M GOING TO TRACE THE BIRD
SHAPE ONTO THE BLUE PAPER
AND DO THE SAME
FOR THE FISH,
BUT ON ORANGE PAPER.
I WILL TRACE OUT
FOUR OF EACH.
WITH MY BIRDS, I'M GOING TO
HAVE ONE BE A SIMPLE BIRD
THEN ADD MORE AND MORE
DETAIL UNTIL I GET
TO THE LAST BIRD, WHICH
WILL HAVE THE MOST DETAIL.
AND, YOU GUESS IT, DO THE
SAME THING FOR THE FISH.
NOW WHAT?

He cuts all shapes and get singular designs. An animated clip explains hot to create the pattern by sticking the singular designs on a new surface, one next to the other.

Eric says WE HAVE TO CREATE THREE
MORE SETS OF THESE
THEN YOU WILL HAVE 32
ANIMAL SHAPES IN TOTAL.
ONCE THAT'S DONE,
CUT THEM OUT
AND YOU ARE
READY TO BUILD.
THE MAGIC HAPPENS WHEN YOU
FIT THE SHAPES TOGETHER
LIKE PUZZLE PIECES.
ALTERNATE THE MOST
SIMPLE BIRD SHAPES
AND THE MOST DETAILED FISH
SHAPES ALONG THE BOTTOM.
IN THE NEXT ROW, ALTERNATE THE
SLIGHTLY MORE DETAILED BIRDS
WITH SLIGHTLY LESS
DETAILED FISH.
YOU GET THE IDEA.
NOW, KEEP GOING FOR
THE NEXT TWO ROWS.
ADJUST THE SHAPES SO YOUR BIRDS
AND FISH ALL NEST TOGETHER.

He alternates fishes with birds until the whole surface is completed.

Eric looks at the final design and says AND, BEHOLD, THE
METAMORPHOSIS OF A FISH
THAT TURNS INTO A BIRD.
OR IS IT THE BIRD
THAT TURNS INTO A FI-
NO, IT'S THE FI-
EITHER WAY, IT'S
PRETTY COOL.

Eric shows the final result.

He says SO, DID WE INSPIRE YOU TO TRY
THIS COOL ART PROJECT AT HOME?
YOU START WITH A SQUARE.
DRAW IDENTICAL SQUIGGLY
LINES ON ALL FOUR SIDES.
FIND HIDDEN SHAPES, THEN
REPEAT THE PATTERN.

He fakes a French accent and says IT'S NOT MAGIC, IT'S MATH!
AND IT'S ART TOO.

A big explosion brings the show’s logo back on the screen.

(music plays)

The end credits roll.
