(MUSIC PLAYS)

In the basement, Kyla sits at the computer.

Kyla is in her mid-teens, with long slightly wavy brown hair. She wears pink trousers, a printed T-shirt and an army green bomber jacket.

Kyla says WHAT'S GOING ON?

E.B. looks out the window.

E.B. is in his mid-teens with curly brown hair in an afro and he wears jeans, a green T-shirt and an unbuttoned plaid shirt in different shades of blue.

E.B. says ROLY POLY DONUTS IS
OPENING ON THE CORNER, KYLA.
ON THE CORNER! AND THE ONE-
THOUSANDTH CUSTOMER GETS
FREE DONUTS FOR LIFE!

Kyla says SO WHY AREN'T YOU OVER THERE?

E.B. says BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO BE
THE ONE-THOUSANDTH CUSTOMER. ALL
RIGHT, SO THERE'S 64 PEOPLE...
SO, ACCORDING TO MY
CALCULATIONS, THAT SHOULD BE...
OKAY. WE GOT TIME, WE GOT TIME.
WHILE WE'RE WAITING,
WHY NOT SOLVE A MYSTERY?

Kyla says I THOUGHT YOU'D NEVER ASK.

E.B. says OKAY. SO WHAT HAVE WE
GOT HERE? HMM... HOW ABOUT "DASH
AND DINE"? SOUNDS INTERESTING.
AND DELICIOUS. NICE, NICE.

He opens the file.

Kyla looks at a black and white picture and says LOOK,
IT'S AN OLD BUILDING.

E.B. says HUH.

Kyla says AND IT SAYS...
"THE OLD MONTGOMERY INN."
WONDER WHY IT'S HERE.

E.B. says HMM... NOT SURE. BUT I
HOPE THIS MEANS LUNCH. IF IT'S
A JAPANESE BENTO BOX DISH.

Kyla says THAT COULD BE ANYTHING.
STOP THINKING WITH YOUR BELLY.

E.B. says SORRY. NO CAN DO. THIS
MYSTERY'S CALLED "DASH AND
DINE," SO IT DEFINITELY HAS
SOMETHING TO DO WITH FOOD.

Kyla says I'M NOT SO SURE.
THE PHRASE "DINE AND DASH" MEANS
TO RUN OUT ON A BILL WITHOUT
PAYING. I THINK THAT'S STEALING.

E.B. says BUT IT'S "DASH AND
DINE," NOT DINE AND DASH.

Kyla says MAYBE HERMIONE GOT
THE WORDS MIXED UP, AND
THAT'S WHAT THIS IS ABOUT.

E.B. says NO, NO, NO, NO, NO.
I BET THIS NEXT CLUE IS
SOMETHING I CAN EAT. UH-HUH.

He takes out a fish puppet.

Kyla says LOOKS LIKE YOU NEED
TO EAT YOUR WORDS.

E.B. says MAYBE WE JUST NEED
TO INVESTIGATE.

Kyla says I BET THIS MYSTERY'S
ABOUT STEALING.

E.B. says WELL, I BET THIS
MYSTERY'S ABOUT FOOD.
LET'S SEE WHO'S RIGHT.

Kyla says YOU ARE ON!

They high-five.

Music plays as the opening of the show rolls.

A song goes HISTORY IS FULL OF MYSTERIES
GREAT AUNT HERMIONE
COULD BE HEARD TO SAY

Aunt Hermione stands next to a knight’s armour. She’s in her fifties, with short white hair and wears glasses, beige trousers, a belted white short-sleeved shirt, an explorer’s hat. She carries a cross-body bag.

The song goes YOU HAVE TO KNOW
WHAT CAME BEFORE
TO NAVIGATE THE WORLD TODAY

Clips show images of power lines, an abacus and a computer.

The song continues SHE WAS GOING TO WRITE A BOOK
CALLED "MYSTERY FILES."
TO TELL WHAT SHE UNCOVERED
BUT TIME RAN OUT
NEW ADVENTURES CAME FIRST
SO SHE LEFT HER SECRETS
UNDISCOVERED

She writes down notes on a notebook, holds a globe, travels by jeep, flies an airplane.

The song continues ALL SHE LEFT BEHIND
WAS A HOUSE FULL OF CLUES
BUT E.B. AND KYLA HAVE A PLAN

In the basement, a drawer in a chest opens and random objects come out.

The song continues THEY'RE GONNA SOLVE
EACH MYSTERY FILE
AND FINISH
WHAT HERMIONE BEGAN
THEY'LL SOLVE

E.B. and Kyla appear looking through Hermione’s notes.

The song continues THE MYSTERY FILES
UNRAVEL ALL THE MYSTERIES
THEY'LL SOLVE
THE MYSTERY FILES
UPLOAD HIDDEN HISTORIES
THEY'LL SOLVE
THE MYSTERY FILES

E.B. and Kyla high-five.

The title of the show reads "The Mystery Files."

(music plays)

Kyla visits the building in the picture.

Kyla says YUP. THIS IS IT.
OH. IT'S A MUSEUM NOW.

Lauren says HELLO.

Kyla says HI. UM... LAUREN?

Lauren is in her twenties and wears 19th century clothing.

Lauren says NICE TO MEET YOU.

Kyla says NICE TO MEET YOU.
SO, I'M TRYING TO SOLVE
ONE OF MY GREAT AUNT
HERMIONE'S MYSTERIES...

Lauren says SURE.

Kyla says ...AND MY FIRST
CLUE LED ME HERE.

Lauren says LET'S SEE. OH, YEAH.
THIS IS AN OLD PHOTOGRAPH
OF THE INN. THIS IS FROM AROUND
THE TIME ONE OF OUR REGULARS...
HERMIONE! SHE USED TO STOP
BY ANY TIME SHE WAS PASSING
THROUGH ETOBICOKE.

Kyla says DID SHE EVER
DINE AND DASH HERE?

Lauren says NO, NO. NOT HERMIONE. NEVER.
SHE ALWAYS PAID HER BILL. SHE
WAS A GREAT TIPPER. SOMETIMES
SHE EVEN STAYED THE NIGHT.

Kyla says WAS THIS WHERE
MY AUNT HERMIONE SLEPT?

Lauren says CORRECT. AS YOU CAN
SEE, IN THE 1800S PEOPLE DIDN'T
ALWAYS HAVE TO RENT OUT A WHOLE
ROOM. THEY COULD JUST RENT A BED
IN A PUBLIC BEDROOM.

Kyla says JUST LIKE ONE
BIG SLUMBER PARTY.

Lauren says EXACTLY. AT SOME INNS,
YOU MIGHT EVEN FIND TWO OR
THREE STRANGERS SHARING A BED.

Kyla says WOW. PEOPLE MUST'VE HAD
A DIFFERENT SENSE OF PERSONAL
SPACE BACK THEN. I CAN'T IMAGINE
THAT HAPPENING TODAY.

Lauren says NO WAY.

Lauren takes Kyla to the diner and says SO THIS IS WHERE FARMERS
AND TRAVELERS WOULD COME
TO CATCH UP.

Kyla says DID AUNT HERMIONE
EVER HANG OUT HERE?

Lauren says SHE MIGHT PASS THROUGH
TO SAY HELLO, BUT HER FAVOURITE
THING WAS AFTERNOON TEA,
ESPECIALLY THE GINGERBREAD.

Kyla says GINGERBREAD. YUM.

Lauren says WANNA MAKE A BATCH?

Kyla says SURE. BUT I GOTTA
MAKE A QUICK CALL.

Lauren says SURE.

Kyla calls E.B.

(E.B.'S PHONE RINGS.)

E.B. says HELLO.

Kyla says HOW'S THE RESEARCH?
THAT IS WHAT YOU'VE BEEN DOING
OUT ON THE STREET, RIGHT?

E.B. says NOT EXACTLY. I JUST
POPPED OUT TO ROLY POLY'S
FOR A CUSTOMER COUNT, BUT
I'LL BE ON THE JOB SOON.

Kyla says WELL, I'VE BEEN SOLVING
OUR MYSTERY. APPARENTLY HERMIONE
USED TO STOP AT MONTGOMERY'S INN
ON HER TRAVELS. BUT SHE NEVER
DINED AND DASHED.

E.B. says AH-HAH! I KNEW IT.
I WAS RIGHT. THE MYSTERY ISN'T
ABOUT STEALING. IT'S ABOUT FOOD.

Kyla says MAYBE. BUT I DON'T THINK
THIS MYSTERY'S ABOUT FOOD IN
GENERAL. HERMIONE'S FAVOURITE
THING WAS GINGERBREAD.
MAYBE IT'S ABOUT BREAD.

E.B. says HMM... WELL,
CLUE TWO LOOKS TOO SMALL
TO BE A BREAD DISH.

Kyla says OH! I KNOW. HERMIONE
USED THE WORD "DASH,"
AND SOMETIMES IN RECIPES,
YOU ADD A DASH OF SOMETHING,
LIKE A DASH OF SUGAR OR A DASH
OF SALT. I'M ABOUT TO BAKE
GINGERBREAD, SO I'LL SEE
IF THAT'S HOW IT'S DONE.

E.B. says GREAT. BUT HOW DOES
THE FISH FIT IN?

Kyla says MAYBE IT'S A SYMBOL
FOR A BREAD COMPANY?

E.B. says MUST BE A PRETTY
CRAZY BREAD COMPANY.

Kyla says WHATEVER.

They end the call.

In the kitchen, Lauren says ALL RIGHT. SO, TO
START OUR GINGERBREAD TODAY,
WE ARE GOING TO USE ONE CUP OF
BUTTER. AND THIS IS YOUR VERY
FANCY OFFICIAL MEASURING CUP.
AND OF COURSE THIS WOULD
PROBABLY HAVE BEEN FRESHLY
CHURNED FROM THE COWS THAT
WERE ON THE MONTGOMERY FARM.
AND NOW COMES THE SPICES.
WE'LL DO TWO TABLESPOONS
OF GINGER INTO THE RECIPE.

Kyla pours the spices in the dough and says LOTS OF GINGER.

Lauren says LAST BUT NOT LEAST,
WE'RE GONNA ADD THE FLOUR.

They roll the dough and cut it with a round cookie cutter.

Kyla says OKAY.
SO THERE'S NO DASH OF ANYTHING?

Lauren says NOT IN THIS RECIPE.

(KYLA'S PHONE RINGS.)

E.B. says HEY, KYLA.

Kyla says HEY, E.B. LOOK AT ME.
I'M MAKING GINGERBREAD
THE OLD-FASHIONED WAY.

A clip shows the bread hanging on a pan over the fire.

E.B. says OH. THAT LOOKS AS
DELICIOUS AS A ROLY POLY
"GINGER DREAM" DONUT.

Kyla says HAVE YOU BEEN DOING ANY
RESEARCH, OR HAVE YOU JUST BEEN
DAYDREAMING ABOUT BAKED GOODS?

E.B. says I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING,
ACTUALLY, WHICH LED ME TO
SOMEWHERE YOU WILL NEVER GUESS.

Kyla says BACK TO ROLY POLY'S?

E.B. says NO. ACTUALLY HERMIONE
STOPPED AT MONTGOMERY'S INN
FOR GINGERBREAD ON
HER TRAVELS, RIGHT?

Kyla says RIGHT.

E.B. says SO I GOT TO THINKING
THAT MAYBE THIS MYSTERY IS
ABOUT FOOD AND TRAVEL.
ABOUT HOW PEOPLE USED TO TRAVEL
AND EAT. CHECK THIS OUT.
UNTIL THE 1860S, PEOPLE HAD TO
BRING THEIR OWN FOOD ON TRAINS,
OR EAT AT BOARDING HOUSE
RESTAURANTS ALONG THE RAILROAD
LINE. THESE RESTAURANTS WERE AT
WATER STOPS WHERE STEAM TRAINS
GOT WATER. BUT THIEVES HUNG OUT
THERE TOO. THAT WAS SCARY
AND DANGEROUS.
SO TRAIN COMPANIES MADE SAFER
PLACES FOR PEOPLE TO EAT RIGHT
ONBOARD THE TRAIN. THEY EVEN HAD
SOME PRETTY FANCY DINING CARS.

Kyla says WOW. I'M THINKING TRAVEL MIGHT
BE INVOLVED IN THIS MYSTERY.

E.B. says ME TOO. I RESEARCHED
THE DISH, AND IT'S A CONTAINER
FROM A PLANE. I'M GOING
TO GATE GROUP, A COMPANY
THAT WORKS FOR AIRLINES.

Kyla says COOL.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE FISH CLUE?

E.B. says IT WASN'T FOR A BREAD
COMPANY, BUT I STILL DON'T KNOW
WHAT IT'S FOR. WHAT ABOUT
YOUR GINGERBREAD? DID YOU USE
A DASH OF ANYTHING?

Kyla says NO. BUT IF THIS
MYSTERY'S ABOUT TRAVEL, MAYBE
THE FISH IS A SYMBOL FOR A SHIP,
AND "DASH AND DINE" IS A NAME
OF A CRUISE LINER. YES!
I'LL ASK LAUREN ABOUT TRAVEL.
(BELL RINGS.)

Kyla says LOVE TO TALK. BUT I GOTTA GO.
IT'S GINGERBREAD TIME.

Lauren says ALL RIGHT. I THINK THESE ARE
READY TO COME OFF THE PAN...... AND ONTO OUR PLATE.

Kyla tastes the bread and says IT'S GOOD.

Lauren says GOOD.

Kyla says SO, WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT
TRAVELERS AT MONTGOMERY'S INN?

Lauren says WELL, IN THE 1800S TRAVELERS
WERE THE INN'S MAIN BUSINESS, SO
THEY ALWAYS HAD TO HAVE A WARM
BED AND A HOT MEAL TO SERVE.
THEY NEEDED SOMEWHERE TO STOP
AND EAT WHEN THEY WERE
TOO FAR FROM HOME TO BRING
THEIR OWN FOOD.

Kyla says SO MONTGOMERY'S INN
WAS AN IMPORTANT STOP ALONG
THE WAY OF A LONG JOURNEY?

Lauren says EXACTLY.

Kyla says THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR
HELP. THESE WERE DELICIOUS.

Lauren says ANY TIME.
YOU'RE ALWAYS WELCOME.

E.B. says I'M HERE AT GATE GROUP,
OR... GATE GOURMET TO FIND OUT
WHAT THIS DISH HAS TO DO WITH
HERMIONE'S MYSTERY ON TRAVEL.
HEY. CHEF RUSS.

Russ is in his forties, bald and with a shadow of a beard. He wears a white chef’s coat and a black apron.

Russel says HEY, E.B. HOW ARE YOU DOING?

E.B. says GOOD. HOW ARE YOU?

Russel says FANTASTIC.

E.B. says SEE, I'M TRYING TO SOLVE
A MYSTERY THAT I THINK IS ABOUT
TRAVEL, AND I WAS WONDERING
WHAT YOU COULD TELL ME
ABOUT THIS DISH.

Russel says THIS IS ACTUALLY ONE
OF OUR AIRPLANE MEAL DISHES.
IN THIS FACILITY HERE, WE MAKE
APPROXIMATELY 22,000 MEALS
A DAY, WHICH IS APPROXIMATELY
8,000,000 MEALS A YEAR
FOR PEOPLE FLYING ALL OVER THE
WORLD. WE'VE GOT A HUGE KITCHEN,
AND I'D LIKE TO TAKE YOU
THROUGH AND SHOW YOU.

E.B. says NO WAY.

Russel says ABSOLUTELY.

E.B. says AWESOME.

Russel says I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO
SEAN. HE'S OUR GENERAL MANAGER.

Sean says HEY, E.B.

Sean is in his fifties, bald and clean-shaven. He wears a white coat.

Russel says AND HE'S GOING
TO SHOW YOU AROUND OUR FACILITY.

They enter a large room full boxes on shelves.

E.B. says WOW. WHAT IS THIS PLACE?

Sean says SO, E.B., THIS IS
ONE OF OUR FREEZERS.

E.B. says WELL, IT'S DEFINITELY
VERY FREEZING.
(RUSS LAUGHS.)

Sean says THIS IS WHERE WE STORE
ALL OF OUR FROZEN COMPONENTS
THAT MAKE THE MEALS THAT
YOU SEE IN THE AIRCRAFT.

E.B. says OH. OKAY. WOW. OKAY.
THERE'S, LIKE, HUNDREDS
OF THESE TROLLEYS. IT SAYS,
"FLIGHT ATTENDANT." IS THIS
WHERE THEY KEEP THE MEALS
ONCE THEY'RE ALL READY?

Sean says YEAH. YOU'D HAVE
YOUR MEAL INSIDE.

E.B. says YEAH.

Sean says AND THE CABIN CREW WOULD
TAKE THE MEAL OUT AND SERVE IT
TO YOU ON THE AIRCRAFT.

E.B. says ICE ROOM!
WHAT IS THIS MACHINE?

Sean says THAT MACHINE CAN MAKE UP
TO 18,000 KILOS OF ICE PER DAY.

E.B. says SO YOU'LL NEVER
RUN OUT OF ICE, BASICALLY.

Sean says NEVER.

Russel says THESE GUYS ARE DOING CHICKENS.

E.B. says OH YEAH?

Russel says YEAH.
SCRAMBLED EGGS.

E.B. says OH. THAT'S SCRAMBLED EGGS?

Russel says YEAH.
MASHED POTATOES FOR 500 PEOPLE.

E.B. says INDUSTRIAL LEVEL
MASHED POTATOES?

Russel says YEAH. TAKE A LOOK.

E.B. looks inside a big mashed potatoes mixer and says OH, OH. IT'S LIKE
AN ANCHOR OF MASHED POTATOES.
NOW THIS KITCHEN IS REALLY
IMPRESSIVE. IT'S MASSIVE.

Russel says IT'S A DIFFERENT
PROCESS HERE. YOU KNOW, WHEN
YOU'RE COOKING, OR YOUR MOM,
OR WHEN SOMEONE'S COOKING A MEAL
FOR YOU IN A RESTAURANT, WHERE
YOU'RE EATING IT STRAIGHT AWAY,
WE'RE SERVING FOOD TO PASSENGERS
HOURS FROM NOW. SO THAT'S WHY
IT'S COOKED AND CHILLED. THERE'S
ANOTHER STEP INVOLVED PRIOR
TO IT GOING OUT TO AN AIRPLANE.

E.B. says IS THERE ANY WAY
THAT I CAN HELP OUT?

Russel says ABSOLUTELY THERE IS.
BUT WE WON'T DO IT HERE. WHAT
WE'RE GONNA DO IS WE'RE GONNA
GO UPSTAIRS TO MY TEST KITCHEN.

In the kitchen, E.B. and Russel wear matching chef’s uniforms.

Russel says THIS IS WHERE I DESIGN
ALL THE MEALS. SO, E.B.,
HOW GOOD ARE YOU AT PUZZLES?

E.B. says WELL, CHEF, DO YOU KNOW
WHAT THEY CALL ME?

Russel says I DON'T.

E.B. says THEY CALL ME
THE "PUZZLE KING."

Russel says WELL I'VE GOT
A PUZZLE FOR YOU.

E.B. says OH, REALLY?

Russel says YEAH.

E.B. says WHAT... WHAT IS IT?

Russel says YOU KNOW THE DISH
THAT YOU BROUGHT IN?

E.B. says YEAH, YEAH.

Russel says THIS IS OUR AIRLINE MEAL.

E.B. says AND PUTTING ONE TOGETHER
IS KIND OF LIKE PUTTING
A PUZZLE TOGETHER.

Russel says ABSOLUTELY IT IS.
DO YOU THINK YOU'RE UP FOR THAT?

E.B. says OH YEAH.

Russel says WELL I'VE GOT ALL
THE COMPONENTS FOR THIS HERE.
DO YOU THINK YOU CAN FIND THEM?

E.B. says YEAH. SURE.
I'LL GIVE IT A TRY.
SO LET'S START WITH THE BREAD.
BREAD, BREAD... AH-HAH.
THIS GOES... RIGHT HERE.
PERFECT, PERFECT.
CHEF RUSSEL'S GONNA SEE
HOW GOOD I AM AT PUZZLES.
OKAY, NEXT. POTATOES.
CROSS. ONE.
CHEF E.B. COMPLETES HIS MEAL.
UM! MASTERPIECE. YES!
MASTERPIECE. OH.

(E.B.'S PHONE RINGS.)

Kyla says HEY, E.B.

E.B. says CHECK IT OUT.
CHEF RUSSEL ASKED ME
TO PUT TOGETHER A PUZZLE OF
AN AIRLINE MEAL. I DID IT.

Kyla says SO DO YOU THINK THIS
MYSTERY'S ABOUT TRAVEL AND FOOD?

E.B. says YEAH.

Kyla says COOL. SO DO I.
LOOK WHAT I JUST FOUND.
STARTING IN THE 1800S,
PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD
TRAVELED TO OUR COUNTRY
AND MADE IT THEIR HOME.
SOME OF THESE IMMIGRANTS OPENED
UP THEIR OWN RESTAURANTS,
SERVING FOOD LIKE THEY HAD BACK
HOME. AT FIRST, PEOPLE WEREN'T
REALLY INTERESTED IN THIS
NEW AND DIFFERENT FOOD,
BUT ONCE THEY GAVE IT A TRY,
THEY LOVED IT.
TODAY, THANKS TO THE IMMIGRANTS
WHO TRAVELED HERE, THERE ARE
MORE THAN 93,000 RESTAURANTS
ACROSS THE COUNTRY, SERVING FOOD
FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD.

E.B. says OBVIOUSLY FOOD'S
A MAJOR PART OF THIS MYSTERY.

Kyla says I THINK SO. ESPECIALLY
'CUZ I RESEARCHED THE FISH, AND
IT'S FROM FAMOUS PEOPLE PLAYERS,
A DINNER THEATRE
REALLY CLOSE BY.

E.B. says BUT HOW DOES TRAVEL FIT
IN WITH FAMOUS PEOPLE PLAYERS,
OR "DASH AND DINE"?

Kyla says I'M GOING THERE
RIGHT NOW TO FIND OUT.

E.B. says COOL. AND I'LL SEE WHAT
MORE I CAN FIND OUT ABOUT FOOD
AND TRAVEL FROM CHEF RUSSEL.

Kyla says SEE YA.

E.B. says OKAY, SO HOW IMPORTANT
IS FOOD TO PLANE TRAVEL?

Russel says IT'S IMPORTANT, JUST
AS MUCH NOW AS IT WAS BACK IN
THE DAY WHEN THERE WAS NO WIFI,
THERE WAS NO TVS ON BOARD
OR ANYTHING.

E.B. says YEAH. LIKE BACK THEN, IT
WAS LIKE THE MAIN ENTERTAINMENT.

Russel says EXACTLY. THAT'S
EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS. SO, E.B.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO TRY ONE OF
THE NEW DISHES I'VE CREATED?

E.B. says YEAH, FOR SURE. LET'S DO IT.

Russel says COOL, MAN.
DIVE IN.

E.B. says OKAY, OKAY.
THERE'S SOME KIMCHI ON THAT.
MMM... MMM... MMM!
I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS AIRLINE
FOOD. NOW IN THE AIR I GUESS
YOU'RE KIND OF EATING JUST LIKE
YOU ARE ON THE GROUND. PLANES
ARE THE RESTAURANTS OF THE SKY.

Russel says ABSOLUTELY.

E.B. says WAIT A MINUTE.
THAT JUST GAVE ME ANOTHER IDEA
ON HOW TO SOLVE THIS MYSTERY.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, CHEF RUSS.

Russel says YOU'RE WELCOME, E.B.

E.B. says YOU'VE BEEN A HUGE HELP.
I'M JUST GONNA...
GONNA BRING THIS WITH ME.

Russel says ABSOLUTELY.

E.B. says THANK YOU.

Russel says THANKS TO YOU. BYE.

Kyla holds moves the fish while recording a video and says DUH-NUH-NUH-NUH,
DUH-NUH-NUH-NUH. I'M ON MY WAY
TO FIND OUT WHAT THIS FISH...
HAS TO DO WITH AUNT HERMIONE'S
MYSTERY ABOUT FOOD AND TRAVEL.

OH. HI, KYLA. COME ON IN.

Kyla says HI. NICE TO MEET YOU.

Rachele is in her thirties, with long straight brown hair in a bun with the sides of her head shaved. She wears black trouser and a black shirt.

Rachele says HI. I'M RACHELE.

Kyla says HI, RACHELE.
Rachele says NICE TO MEET YOU.

Kyla says OKAY. SO, I'M TRYING
TO SOLVE A MYSTERY, AND ONE
OF MY CLUES LED ME HERE.
WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT IT?

Rachele says WELL, WHY DON'T
I SHOW YOU AROUND A BIT?

Kyla says SURE.
RACHELE TOLD ME THAT FAMOUS
PEOPLE PLAYERS IS A GLOW-IN-THE-
DARK PUPPET THEATRE COMPANY.
IT'S A CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION
THAT HIRES PEOPLE WITH
DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES.
HI, NICE TO MEET YOU.

Kathleen says NICE TO MEET YOU.

Kathleen is in her thirties, with long blond hair in a top not. She wears glasses, black trousers and a black shirt.

Kyla says SO I WAS WONDERING WHAT
YOU CAN TELL ME ABOUT THIS CLUE.

Kathleen says THIS CLUE IS
FROM OUR CURRENT SHOW CALLED
"TOO DARN HOT," AND IT'S
FROM THE AQUARIUM NUMBER.

Kyla says HMM... WELL, THAT
DOESN'T REALLY SEEM TO HAVE
ANYTHING TO DO WITH FOOD
OR TRAVEL. BUT WHAT ELSE
CAN YOU GUYS TELL ME ABOUT
THE PROPS IN THIS PLACE.

Rachele says ALL THE PROPS YOU SEE
HERE IS FROM 42 YEARS OF ALL
OF OUR THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS,
SO A LOT OF THESE PROPS HAVE
BEEN TO BROADWAY, LAS VEGAS,
ALL ACROSS THE WORLD TO CHINA,
JAPAN, AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

Kyla says AWESOME.

Kathleen plays a foam harp and says WE ALL MAKE IT HERE. HOMEMADE.
TA-DA! YAR!

Rachele says WELL, KYLA.
THIS IS WHERE THE SHOW HAPPENS.

Kyla says SO HOW DID FAMOUS
PEOPLE PLAYERS START?

Rachele says WELL IT ALL STARTED
WITH OUT FOUNDER, DIANE DUPUY.

A picture of a woman in her fifties with short blond hair appears.

Rachele says WHEN SHE WAS A LITTLE GIRL
IN SCHOOL, SHE HAD A LEARNING
DISABILITY, WHICH CAUSED HER
TO BE BULLIED AND PICKED ON.
AND SO SHE WOULD ISOLATE
HERSELF. BUT THE ONE THING
SHE DID HAVE IN ABUNDANCE
WAS HER IMAGINATION,
SO HER MOTHER CREATED HER
THIS TINY LITTLE PUPPET THEATRE.
IT WAS JUST HAND PUPPETS. AND
AS SHE GREW OLDER SHE TOOK THESE
SMALL PUPPETS AND SHE CREATED
THEM INTO THESE LIFE-SIZE PROPS.
AND THEN SHE TOOK PEOPLE
WHO WERE JUST LIKE HER,
PEOPLE WHO WERE BULLIED
AND PICKED ON IN SCHOOL,
AND SHE BROUGHT THEM ONSTAGE.
AND ALSO HER IMAGINATION CAUSES
OUR IMAGINATIONS TO GET GOING,
AND WE CREATE THIS AMAZING
SHOW ALL TOGETHER.
THE OTHER THING THAT'S REALLY,
REALLY AWESOME AND REALLY COOL
ABOUT FAMOUS PEOPLE PLAYERS IS
THAT WE TAKE PEOPLE WHO HAVE
DEVELOPMENTAL CHALLENGES AND
WE GIVE THEM AN OPPORTUNITY
TO BE ONSTAGE AND TO BE CHEFS
IN A KITCHEN AND WORK IN
RESTAURANT AND HOSPITALITY.
AND IT GIVES THEM THE LIFE
SKILLS TO BE TRULY INDEPENDENT.

Kyla says THIS IS SUCH AN AMAZING
PLACE, BUT I'M STILL NOT SURE
WHAT IT HAS TO DO WITH
MY "DINE AND DASH" MYSTERY.
I MEAN, "DASH AND DINE."
(RACHELE LAUGHS.)

Rachele says WELL, ACTUALLY, THIS
THEATRE IS CALLED A "DINE AND
DREAM" THEATRE. SO BEFORE THE
SHOW, WE ACTUALLY HAVE CUSTOMERS
SIT DOWN AND HAVE A THREE-COURSE
MEAL, AND THEN THEY COME AND SEE
THE SHOW. SO MAYBE THAT'S THE
CONNECTION YOU'RE LOOKING FOR.

Kyla says CAN YOU TELL ME MORE
ABOUT THE "DINE" PART?

Rachele says WELL, WE ACTUALLY
HAVE A SHOW TO PUT ON REALLY
SOON, SO WHY DON'T I SHOW YOU.

Kyla says YEAH, SURE.

Rachele says SO THIS IS ONE PART
OF OUR CULINARY ARTS "DREAM."
PROGRAM. THIS IS OUR KITCHEN.

Kyla says SO HOW MANY MEALS
ARE YOU GUYS PREPARING?

The cook says ONE HUNDRED FIFTY.

Kyla says WOW. 150.

Rachele says I KNOW. THAT'S A LOT. MAYBE
YOU SHOULD GIVE THEM A HAND?

Kyla says YEAH.

(KYLA LAUGHS.)

Kyla gets in a cook’s helper’s uniform.

(KYLA'S PHONE RINGS.)

Kyla says HEY, E.B. WHERE ARE YOU?

E.B. says I'M IN LINE FOR ROLY POLY
DONUTS AND, IF MY CALCULATIONS
ARE CORRECT, I SHOULD BE
CUSTOMER 1,000 VERY SOON.
HOW'S THE INVESTIGATION GOING?

Kyla says FUN. BUT I HAVEN'T FOUND
ANYTHING ABOUT TRAVEL HERE.
I WONDER IF WE'RE GETTING CLOSER
TO A DIFFERENT ANSWER.

E.B. says LIKE WHAT?

Kyla says THIS PLACE THAT
I'M AT IS CALLED THE
"DINE AND DREAM THEATRE."

E.B. says HEY, THAT'S KIND
OF LIKE THE FILE TAG.

Kyla says I KNOW. I'M NOT SURE
HOW IT FITS IN YET,
BUT I'M REALLY EXCITED TO
PREPARE A YUMMY PRE-SHOW DINNER
WHILE I FIGURE IT OUT.

E.B. says EXCELLENT. AND I FOUND
SOMETHING ELSE THAT MIGHT HELP.
I FIGURED OUT THE WORD "DINER."
COMES FROM "DINING CAR."
FROM LOOKING AT PICTURES,
I FOUND EVEN MORE CONNECTIONS.
DINERS HAVE ALWAYS HAD A
COUNTER, STOOLS, AND A FOOD
PREP AREA ALONG THE BACK WALL,
JUST LIKE TRAIN DINING CARS.
SOME OLD TRAIN CARS HAVE
EVEN BEEN MADE INTO DINERS.
(THE TRAIN WHISTLES.)

Kyla says WOW. I'M WONDERING IF
THIS MYSTERY ISN'T ABOUT FOOD
AND TRAVEL BUT ABOUT
RESTAURANTS. FAMOUS PEOPLE
PLAYERS IS A RESTAURANT, AND
SO IS PART OF MONTGOMERY'S INN.

E.B. says YES! AND PLANES ARE
THE RESTAURANTS OF THE SKY.

Kyla says BUT WHAT ABOUT
THE FILE TAG, "DASH AND DINE"?
WHAT DOES "DASH" MEAN?

E.B. says COULD IT BE THE NAME
OF A FAMOUS RESTAURANT,
LIKE THE THEATRE YOU'RE IN,
LIKE "DINE AND DREAM"?

Kyla says MAYBE. BUT GREAT AUNT
HERMIONE'S MYSTERIES ARE NEVER
AS SIMPLE AS THAT. THERE'S GOT
TO BE MORE TO THIS THAN JUST
DIFFERENT KINDS OF RESTAURANTS.

Rachele says ALL RIGHT, GUYS.
IT'S TIME FOR DINNER.

Kyla says SORRY, E.B. GOTTA GO.

The manager says JAMIE, YOU'RE WITH
NICK. AND I WANT YOU TWO TO TAKE
DINNER FORKS TO TABLES 32 TO 40.
AND YOU'RE WITH ME. AND WE'RE
DOING DESSERT SPOONS AND FORKS.

Kyla says COOL. OKAY.

Rachele takes Kyla backstage and says ALL RIGHT.
SO HERE'S THE CURTAIN.
SO THE SHOW'S ABOUT TO START,
SO BE ON STANDBY TO OPEN IT.

Kyla says OKAY.

ALL RIGHT. CURTAIN, GO.

Kyla draws the curtains open.

(APPLAUSE)

The puppet show starts.

(LAUGHS AND APPLAUSE)
(MORE APPLAUSE)
(AUDIENCE GASPS.)
(APPLAUSE AND CHEERS)

Back in the basement, E.B. says READY TO SOLVE A MYSTERY?

Kyla says I SURE AM.

E.B. says WE KNOW THIS MYSTERY
IS ABOUT RESTAURANTS, BECAUSE
EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE CLUES
HAS SOMETHING TO DO
WITH RESTAURANTS.

Kyla says YUP. THAT FITS WITH "DINE."
"DASH" MEANS TO MOVE QUICKLY,
SO IT COULD MEAN TO TRAVEL.
AND WE KNOW THAT RESTAURANTS
STARTED FOR TRAVELERS
TO STOP FOR A BASIC MEAL.

E.B. says YES! AND WHEN IMMIGRANTS
TRAVELED HERE, THEY OPENED UP
THEIR OWN RESTAURANTS,
SERVING ALL KINDS OF FOOD.
AND RESTAURANTS GREW TO SERVE
TRAVELERS ON THEIR JOURNEYS,
LIKE IN TRAINS AND PLANES.

Kyla says YEAH! AND I HEARD THAT
A LOT OF THE PEOPLE THAT GO TO
THE FAMOUS PEOPLE PLAYERS DINNER
THEATRE COME FROM OUT OF TOWN,
SO THEY ALSO TRAVEL.

E.B. says THAT'S IT! THIS IS
WHAT HERMIONE MUST HAVE MEANT
BY "DASH AND DINE."
WHILE RESTAURANTS USED TO JUST
BE FOR PEOPLE WHO WERE, YOU
KNOW, TOO FAR FROM HOME TO BRING
A SNACK, NOW PEOPLE ACTUALLY
TRAVEL TO VISIT A RESTAURANT.

Kyla says ESPECIALLY WHEN
THEY PUT ON GOOD SHOWS.

E.B. says AND HAVE DELICIOUS FOOD
FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD.

Kyla says HEY! WHATEVER HAPPENED
TO ROLY POLY'S? WERE YOU
THE ONE THOUSANDTH CUSTOMER?

E.B. says I WAS CUSTOMER
ONE THOUSAND AND ONE.
SO CLOSE! BUT IT'S OKAY.
IT'S OKAY. BECAUSE I STILL GOT
TO SIT IN THE COMFY BOOTH AND
SMELL THE DONUTS BEING MADE AND
STILL EAT MY DELICIOUS PEANUT
BUTTER CHOCOLATEY TREAT. MMM...

Kyla says SO, JUST LIKE IN
AUNT HERMIONE'S MYSTERY, ROLY
POLY'S WAS YOUR DESTINATION.

E.B. says OH YEAH, KYLA.
THAT PLACE? THAT PLACE IS
MY OWN LITTLE PARADISE.

E.B. looks out the window, sighs and says PARADISE.

They post the video and say MYSTERY SOLVED! POSTING
TO THE MYSTERY FILES WEBSITE.
