Troy stands next to a gray chalkboard showing math signs and a colourful logo that reads "TVOKids Home Work Zone." He is in her early thirties, clean-shaven and bald. He wears a blue T-shirt and a watch.
He says ARE YOU LOOKING
FOR HELP WITH FRACTIONS?
MY NAME IS TEACHER TROY AND
HOPEFULLY I'LL BE ABLE TO HELP
YOU OUT WITH THEM.
FRACTIONS ARE ALWAYS THINGS THAT
PEOPLE THINK ARE VERY VERY
DIFFICULT AND THEY'RE NOT THAT
HARD AT ALL.
FRACTIONS ARE JUST SIMPLY
DIVISION QUESTIONS.
SO IF WE LOOK AT OUR DIVISION
SIGN OVER HERE FOR EXAMPLE, THAT
LOOKS LIKE A FRACTION.
WE HAVE A TOP NUMBER, A LINE
SEPARATED A BOTTOM NUMBER.
SO WE LOOK AT THE NUMBER,
FRACTION ONE HALF.
SO BASICALLY ONE HALF IS ONE
OVER TWO.
He writes the equation and continues WHAT THIS TELLS YOU IS, YOU HAVE
ONE PART THAT IS REPRESENTED BUT
THE WHOLE PIECE IS DIVIDED IN TO
TWO EQUAL PARTS SO THAT'S WHERE
WE GET IN TO THE DIVISION.
SO IF I DREW...
He draws a circle and continues THE WHOLE, DON'T MIND MY CIRCLE
AND DIVIDED IN TO TWO EQUAL
PARTS.
WHAT WE IS RIGHT NOW THERE'S TWO
PARTS, WE HAVEN'T CHANGED THE
SIZE OF OUR CIRCLE SO THE WHOLE
STAYS THE SAME.
BUT WHAT DOES THIS ONE TELL US?
THIS ONE TELLS US WHICH ONE
WE'RE DEALING WITH, SO FOR
EXAMPLE IF WE WANTED TO TALK
ABOUT HOW MANY PEPPERONI PIECES
ON A PIZZA.
RIGHT HERE, IF WE SAID ONE HALF
OF THE PIZZA HAS PEPPERONI...
ONE HALF OF IT IS REPRESENTED
HERE.
IF I TOOK ANOTHER ONE, FOR
EXAMPLE.
WE HAVE ANOTHER PIZZA AND I
SAID, NOW WE HAVE ONE EIGHTH.
THE NUMBER EIGHT IS LARGER THAN
THE TWO SO WHAT THAT, WHAT THAT
TELLS US AGAIN IS HOW MANY EQUAL
PARTS THE WHOLE IS DIVIDED IN
TO.
IT'S DIVIDED IN TO EIGHT, EIGHT
EQUAL PARTS.
WHAT YOU'LL NOTICE IS IF YOU
HAVE TO SHARE A PIZZA WITH,
BETWEEN EIGHT PEOPLE THE SLICES
ARE GOING TO BE PRETTY SMALL SO
LET'S LOOK AT IT.
SO RIGHT THERE WE HAVE OUR FOUR,
SIX, EIGHT AND OUR ONE.
SO RIGHT NOW, YOU'RE GETTING
THAT SMALL SLICE THERE.
I'D RATHER HAVE THIS SLICE, TAKE
HALF THE PIZZA AND SHARE IT WITH
ONE OF MY FRIENDS INSTEAD OF
SHARING IT WITH SEVEN OTHER
PEOPLE.
SO HOPEFULLY YOU KNOW THAT NOW
WHEN WE TALK ABOUT FRACTIONS,
FRACTIONS TALK ABOUT PARTS OF
WHOLES AS THE NUM, THE
DENOMINATOR, THE BOTTOM NUMBER
GETS LARGER IT TALKS ABOUT
HOW SMALLER THE PIECES ARE GOING
TO BE AND THERE'S MORE OF THEM.
SO THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT,
ALWAYS THINK ABOUT SHARING,
THINK ABOUT DIVIDING.
THAT'S THE IMPORTANT PIECES
ABOUT FRACTIONS.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH, I HOPE THAT
HELPS.
