Transcript: Library of Parilament 1
(music plays)
The opening sequence shows the Canadian flag atop the Parliament, a man playing hockey outdoors, a trout splashing off the water, a panorama of Toronto from Lake Ontario, a Mounted Policeman saluting and a view of cropped fields.
A title reads "My Canada."
A group of narrators say MY CANADA!
A kid giggles and says SWEET.
A teacher faces a classroom. He is balding and has short, black hair on the sides of his head. He wears a white shirt and a striped tie. He stands in front of a map of Canada, a chalkboard with a monument drawing, and a TV set.
The Teacher says GOOD DAY, STUDENTS.
TODAY WE'LL BE WATCHING A VIDEO
REPORT TOURING A LIBRARY.
BUT NOT JUST ANY LIBRARY.
THIS IS THE LIBRARY OF
PARLIAMENT.
LET'S WATCH.
The teacher turns on the TV.
Leah is around 12, with brown hair tied-up. She wears a blue T-shirt over a white shirt.
Leah says HI, MY NAME'S LEAH, AND
I'M HERE IN THE PARLIAMENT
BUILDINGS IN OTTAWA ONTARIO, AND
THIS IS MY CANADA.
TODAY I'M HANGING OUT HERE IN
THE LIBRARY OF PARLIAMENT WITH
MY FRIEND JULIE WHO'S A TOUR
GUIDE HERE IN THE PARLIAMENT
BUILDINGS.
SO JULIE, CAN THE PARLIAMENT
LIBRARY BE USED JUST LIKE A
NORMAL SCHOOL LIBRARY, OR A
PUBLIC LIBRARY?
Julie is in her late twenties with shoulder-length wavy brown hair. She wears a blue jacket with buttons.
Julie says WELL IT HAS THE SAME
FUNCTION IN THE SENSE THAT IT'S
A PLACE WITH LOTS OF
INFORMATION.
THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT THE
LIBRARY OF PARLIAMENT IS A HUB
OF RESOURCES AND INFORMATION FOR
PARLIAMENTARIANS, AND ON BEHALF
OF PARLIAMENTARIANS.
Leah says SO THE LIBRARY'S VERY
IMPORTANT.
Julie says ABSOLUTELY.
Leah says SO WHEN WAS THE
BUILDING BUILT?
Julie says WELL THE LIBRARY PART
WAS ACTUALLY COMPLETED IN 1876.
NOW IT'S ACTUALLY THE OLDEST
PART OF CENTER BLOCK HERE,
BECAUSE IN 1916 THERE WAS A FIRE
THAT DEVASTATED THE REST OF
CENTER BLOCK BUILDING, LEAVING
ONLY REALLY THE LIBRARY INTACT.
A big statue stands in the center of the library.
Leah says OH, WOW.
SO HOW MANY BOOKS AND DOCUMENTS
ARE ACTUALLY HERE?
Leah says OH, THIS IS A HUGE
NUMBER BUT WE HAVE OVER A
MILLION PUBLICATIONS HERE IN THE
LIBRARY OF PARLIAMENT.
SO IT'S NOT JUST WHAT YOU'RE
SEEING AROUND YOU, THAT'S KIND
OF JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBURG.
WE ALSO HAVE MULTIPLE LEVELS,
SUB BASEMENT LEVELS ACTUALLY
WITH MORE OF THE COLLECTION.
AND YOU'RE NOT GOING TO BELIEVE
THIS BUT THE COLLECTION
CONTINUES INTO BUILDINGS IN
DOWNTOWN OTTAWA.
SO IT'S A HUGE COLLECTION.
Leah says OH, WOW.
SO THAT'S A LOT OF BOOKS.
WELL THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR
HANGING OUT WITH ME TODAY.
Julie says LOVED TO.
Leah says BYE GUYS.
The Teacher says YOU KNOW, THAT VIDEO
REPORT REMINDS ME THAT YOU ALL
HAVE A BOOK REPORT DUE, SO OFF
TO THE LIBRARY EVERYONE!
(music plays)
The end slate reads "TVOKIDS, Copyright 2011, The Ontario Educational Communications Authority."
