Transcript: What is Sound?
(music plays)
Aldo stands next to a wall touch screen showing the logo of the program. He is in her mid-thirties, clean-shaven with short blond hair. He wears glasses and a blue T-shirt with a print that reads "Home Work Zone."
He says HEY, TVO KIDS AND
WELCOME TO
THE
HOMEWORK ZONE!
I'M TEACHER ALDO
AND TODAY,
WE'RE GOING
TO TALK ABOUT
THE SCIENCE
OF SOUND.
WHAT
IS SOUND?
WELL ANYTHING THAT
MAKES A
VIBRATION OR
MOVES, CREATES SOUND,
AND SOUND IS NOTHING
MORE THAN
A WAVE TRAVELING
THROUGH THE AIR.
IF YOU LOOK AT THE
SMART BOARD HERE,
I'VE GOT A SIDE
PROFILE OF A HUMAN FACE,
AND WHEN SOMEONE IS
SPEAKING TO YOU,
THINK ABOUT
SOUNDS OF WAVES
COMING FROM
THEIR MOUTH,
AND THAT GOES DIRECTLY
TO YOUR EARS
AND
THAT'S SOUND.
Using a black marker, he draws the waves and continues COME ON OVER
HERE.
THERE'S A
NEAT EXPERIMENT
I WANT YOU TO
TRY AT HOME.
ASK YOUR
PARENTS FOR
PERMISSION.
IF YOU GET A BOWL
OF WATER AND
FILL THE WATER
ABOUT HALF WAY
INSIDE THE
BOWL,
AND TAKE YOUR
FINGER AND BEGIN
TO TAP ON THE SIDE
OF THE BOWL,
TAKE A LOOK
AT WHAT YOU SEE!
YOU ACTUALLY SEE WAVES
IN THE WATER.
WELL THOSE
WAVES IN THE WATER
ARE LIKE THE WAVES OF
SOUND IN THE AIR.
SO THERE'S A
MODEL OF SOUND
IN WATER, WHICH
REPRESENT WAVES
IN THE AIR.
SO THE NEXT TIME
YOU'RE OUT
AND ABOUT
AND YOU'RE LISTENING
TO A BARKING DOG OR
A SINGING BIRD,
THINK ABOUT
WAVES OF SOUND.
I'M TEACHER ALDO,
AND NOW YOU KNOW!
