Transcript: How Sound Moves
(music plays)
In a colourful TV studio, Aldo stands near a wall touch screen showing the logo of the program. He is in her mid-thirties, clean-shaven with short blond hair. He wears glasses and a blue T-shirt with a print that reads "Home Work Zone."
He says HEY THERE,
TVO KIDS,
IT'S
TEACHER ALDO HERE.
WELCOME TO THE
HOMEWORK ZONE!
TODAY, I'VE GOT A
REALLY NEAT EXPERIMENT,
PROVING THAT SOUND
TRAVELS IN WAVES.
NOW THESE ARE
A COUPLE OF ITEMS
THAT YOU'RE GOING TO
NEED FROM YOUR HOME.
YOU'RE GOING TO ASK
YOUR MOTHER OR FATHER
FOR PERMISSION
TO DO SO.
FIRST THING
THAT WE HAVE HERE IS
WE HAVE A PLASTIC
CUP, AND YOU'RE
GOING TO ALSO NEED
SOME PLASTIC SARAN WRAP.
YOU'RE GOING TO PUT
THE SARAN WRAP
OVER THE
PLASTIC CUP,
AND YOU'RE GOING
TO SECURE IT
WITH AN
ELASTIC BAND.
NOW I ALREADY HAVE
ONE PRE-MADE HERE,
AND THE NEXT THING
YOU'RE GOING TO DO
IS YOU'RE GOING
TO TAKE
A LITTLE BIT OF
RICE AND PUT IT
ON THE TOP OF
THE PLASTIC,
JUST
LIKE THAT.
SO WHAT WE'RE GOING
TO DO NOW IS
WE'RE GOING TO
GET A POT AND A SPOON,
AND A WARNING
HERE,
THERE'S GOING
TO BE A LOT OF NOISE
MADE IN YOUR
HOME,
SO MAKE SURE YOU
WARN YOUR FAMILY
THAT YOU'RE ABOUT TO
DO THIS EXPERIMENT,
AND YOU MAY DENT
THE BOTTOM OF THE PAN.
SO WHAT WE'RE
GOING TO DO
IS PUT THE PAN
REALLY CLOSE TO
THE RICE,
AND WE ARE GOING TO
STRIKE THE
BOTTOM
OF THE PAN,
AND WATCH WHAT HAPPENS
TO THE RICE.
[Clanging]
IF YOU NOTICE,
AS I STRIKE
THE BOTTOM
THE OF THE PAN,
IT BASICALLY CREATES
A VIBRATION
WHICH VIBRATES
THE AIR IN FRONT,
WHICH CREATES A
SOUND WAVE AND
IT'S THAT
SOUND WAVE THAT'S
MOVING THE RICE ON THE
TOP OF THE PLASTIC.
SO WHEN
YOU'RE OUT AND ABOUT
AND YOU HEAR SOUNDS
LIKE HONKING CARS
OR
BARKING DOGS,
THOSE SOUND WAVES
TRAVEL INTO
YOUR EAR AND
THAT'S HOW YOU HEAR
THE SOUND.
SO THIS IS AN
EXPERIMENT
YOU CAN TRY AT
HOME TO TEST THAT
SOUND TRAVELS
IN WAVES.
I'M TEACHER ALDO,
AND NOW YOU KNOW.
