Transcript: Subtracting with Place Value Chart
Teacher Shahana stands in a studio next to a large touchscreen. She has long brown hair and wears a blue shirt with a print that reads "Homework zone."
A chart appears on the large touchscreen. The columns read "Thousands, hundreds, tens, ones."
A caption reads "Teacher Shahana."
Shahana says HEY, TVO KIDS,
I'M TEACHER SHAHANA,
AND I'M HERE TO SHOW YOU HOW
TO SUBTRACT TWO-DIGIT NUMBERS.
LET'S GIVE IT A TRY
WITH AN EXAMPLE.
LET'S SAY WE HAVE THE
NUMBER FIFTY TWO
She writes 5 in tens and 2 in ones, then says
AND WE NEED TO
SUBTRACT THIRTY EIGHT.
She writes 3 in tens and 8 in ones and adds a line below.
She says THE FIRST THING YOU WANT
TO DO IS WRITE BOTH
OF YOUR NUMBERS INTO
A PLACE VALUE CHART
LIKE I HAVE.
NOW STARTING OVER HERE
AT THE ONES PLACE VALUE,
YOU'LL NOTICE THAT WE HAVE
A TWO MINUS AN EIGHT.
WE CAN'T REALLY
DO THAT.
SO WHAT DO WE DO?
WELL, WE HAVE TO GO OVER
TO THE TENS PLACE VALUE
AND BORROW ONE FROM
THERE TO BRING IT OVER.
She crosses out the 5 and writes in a 4, then adds a 1 to the 2 in ones, forming 12.
She says SO WE'RE GOING TO MAKE
THE FIVE INTO A FOUR
AND BORROW ONE TEN
AND BRING IT OVER HERE.
SO THAT BECOMES A
TEN PLUS A TWO,
WHICH GIVES US A
TOTAL OF TWELVE.
NOW WE CAN GO AHEAD AND
SUBTRACT TWELVE MINUS EIGHT,
AND THAT GIVES US FOUR.
AND THEN OUR LAST STEP
IS TO GO OVER TO THE
TENS PLACE VALUE AND
DO FOUR MINUS THREE,
WHICH GIVES US A ONE.
She writes down the numbers, forming 14.
She says SO WE GET AN ANSWER OR A
DIFFERENCE OF FOURTEEN.
THANKS FOR JOINING
ME, TVO KIDS.
