Transcript: Rubber
(music plays)
In animation, a shooting star flies in space past planet Earth as a title appears: I wonder... WHY?
A little girl up on a smartphone screen. She has short blond hair. Her name is Eden.
Eden says I WONDER WHY
RUBBER STRETCHES?
Now Kevin Donker appears on screen. Kevin is a perimeter scientist.
Kevin says THAT'S A REALLY GREAT
QUESTION, EDEN.
RUBBER IS A LITTLE BIT OF
A FANCY KIND OF MATERIAL.
He stretches a rubber band.
He says RUBBER IS MADE OF THESE
REALLY LONG MOLECULES.
A bead necklace appears on screen with a little sign that says “Not a real molecule.”
Kevin says AND WHEN THEY'RE
UNSTRETCHED,
THEY'RE KIND OF ALL
BOUND UP AND
CURLED UP ON
ONE ANOTHER.
WHEN WE STRETCH A
PIECE OF RUBBER,
ALL OF A SUDDEN THE
MOLECULES BECOME ALIGNED,
AND THEY STRETCH OUT
BETWEEN MY FINGERS.
NOW THE THING IS, NATURE
DOESN'T LIKE THINGS
THAT ARE ORDERLY.
IT WOULD RATHER
HAVE DISORDER.
A caption reads “Nature likes disorder (Enthropy).”
Kevin says SO WHEN YOU LET GO
OF THE RUBBER,
ALL THESE MOLECULES
WOULD RATHER GO
TO THAT BUNDLED
UP STATE.
SO THAT'S WHY THE RUBBER
CONTRACTS ON ITSELF.
SO, WHEN I LET GO -
THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS.
THEY ALL RETURN TO WHAT
THEY LOOKED LIKE BEFORE.
A rubber band plane flies across the screen and a kid yells YIPPEE!
