Transcript: The Mystery of the Salty Dog
In the basement, E.B. listens to music with his earphones and sings a song that says LIKE A DOG
LIKE A DOG, LIKE A DOG
LIKE A DOG, LIKE A DOG
DOO-DOO, DOO-DOO, DOO-DOO
LIKE A DOG, LIKE A DOG
E.B. is in his mid-teens with curly brown hair in an afro and he wears jeans and a blue and greens striped polo shirt.
Kyla comes in and touches his shoulder.
Kyla is in her mid-teens, with long slightly wavy brown hair in braids. She wears jeans, a pale pink T-shirt and a denim jacket.
E.B. says OH!
SORRY. I JUST FOUND THIS WEBSITE
WHERE I CAN DOWNLOAD ALL
THIS GREAT MUSIC FREE.
Kyla says OOH! SEND ME THE LINK.
E.B. says ALL RIGHT. AND... SENT.
WHAT MYSTERY FILE IS
CALLING OUT MY NAME TODAY?
He reads a label on a suitcase that and OOH! "SALTY DOG."
SALTY DOG, SALTY DOG
SALTY DOG
(music plays)
Kyla takes out a wooden weapon and says HMM...
HOW DOES THIS FIT
WITH "SALTY DOG"?
E.B. says MAYBE IT'S A STICK
A DOG WOULD CHEW?
Kyla reads a label on it and says "IF LOST RETURN
TO 588 HOG'S BACK ROAD."
I'M GONNA START THERE.
E.B. says ALL RIGHT. WELL,
CHECK THIS OUT. IT'S SOME
KIND OF LETTER WRITTEN TO
CAPTAIN WILLIAM JOHNSTON.
I'LL START RESEARCHING THIS.
Kyla says HMM...
E.B. says SWEET!
A MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE?
Kyla says LET'S SEE WHAT IT SAYS.
E.B. says UH... HANG ON. THAT
BOTTLE COULD BE OLD. I READ
SOMEWHERE THAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED
TO TREAT ARTIFACTS VERY
CAREFULLY TO PROTECT THEM.
Kyla says GOOD IDEA. I REMEMBER
A MUSEUM WHERE I SAW SOMETHING
LIKE THIS. I'LL CALL THEM
BEFORE WE DO ANYTHING CRAZY,
LIKE PULL OUT THE PAPER.
E.B. says YEAH, YEAH. OKAY,
SO, THERE'S A DOG NAMED SALTY,
AND THIS PAPER IS THE OWNER'S
DOG LICENSE, AND THIS STICK IS
THE DOG'S FAVOURITE CHEW TOY,
AND THIS BOTTLE IS...
IT DOESN'T FIT.
Kyla says TIME TO INVESTIGATE?
E.B. says YEAH!
Music plays as the opening of the show rolls.
A song goes HISTORY IS FULL OF MYSTERIES
GREAT AUNT HERMIONE
COULD BE HEARD TO SAY
Aunt Hermione stands next to a knight’s armour. She’s in her fifties, with short white hair and wears glasses, beige trousers, a belted white short-sleeved shirt, an explorer’s hat. She carries a cross-body bag.
The song goes YOU HAVE TO KNOW
WHAT CAME BEFORE
TO NAVIGATE THE WORLD TODAY
Clips show images of power lines, an abacus and a computer.
The song continues SHE WAS GOING TO WRITE A BOOK
CALLED "MYSTERY FILES."
TO TELL WHAT SHE UNCOVERED
BUT TIME RAN OUT
NEW ADVENTURES CAME FIRST
SO SHE LEFT HER SECRETS
UNDISCOVERED
She writes down notes on a notebook, holds a globe, travels by jeep, flies an airplane.
The song continues ALL SHE LEFT BEHIND
WAS A HOUSE FULL OF CLUES
BUT E.B. AND KYLA HAVE A PLAN
In the basement, a drawer in a chest opens and random objects come out.
The song continues THEY'RE GONNA SOLVE
EACH MYSTERY FILE
AND FINISH
WHAT HERMIONE BEGAN
THEY'LL SOLVE
E.B. and Kyla appear looking through Hermione’s notes.
The song continues THE MYSTERY FILES
UNRAVEL ALL THE MYSTERIES
THEY'LL SOLVE
THE MYSTERY FILES
UPLOAD HIDDEN HISTORIES
THEY'LL SOLVE
THE MYSTERY FILES
E.B. and Kyla high-five.
The title of the show reads "The Mystery Files."
(music plays)
Kyla records a video and says I'M HERE AT HOG'S
BACK ROAD TO FIND OUT WHAT
GREAT AUNT HERMIONE WAS TRYING
TO TELL US ABOUT THE "SALTY DOG."
WHO OWNS THIS STICK.
Kate says ARGH!
Kate is in her twenties, with long wavy blond hair and she wears a pirate costume.
Kyla says OH. HI. UM... I THINK
I'M IN THE RIGHT PLACE. UM...
I HAVE THIS CLUE FROM MY
GREAT AUNT HERMIONE'S FILES.
Kate says ARGH! THAT BE A PEG LEG,
MATEY. IT'S PART OF
A PIRATE COSTUME.
Kyla says OH, WOW! PIRATES ARE FUN.
Kate says THAT'S WHY I'M
A PRATE RE-ENACTOR.
Kyla says THAT'S SUCH A COOL JOB.
Kate says WELL, WE'RE ABOUT TO SET
SAIL IN A COUPLE OF MINUTES,
IF YOU WANT TO COME ALONG.
Kyla says YEAH, SURE.
(music plays)
They now stand on a peer, next to a pirate ship.
Kyla is now in a pirate costume.
Kate says VERY AUTHENTIC, KYLA.
Kyla says THANK YOU.
Kate says BUT YOU CAN'T BE A REAL
PIRATE JUST LOOKING LIKE A
PIRATE. YOU ALSO NEED TO KNOW
HOW TO TALK LIKE A PIRATE.
Kyla says I KNOW A WORD... ARGH!
Kate says WHY, THAT'S A GREAT
PIRATE WORD. ONE OF A PIRATE'S
FAVOURITES. THERE'S "MATEY,"
WHICH MEANS "FRIEND."
Kyla says MATEY.
Kate says THERE'S "AHOY,"
WHICH MEANS "HELLO."
Kyla says AHOY, MATEY.
Kate says "LANDLUBBER."
Kyla says WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
Kate says WELL IT MEANS
ANYBODY WHO'S NOT A PIRATE.
THERE'S ALSO "LAND AHOY."
Kyla says LAND AHOY!
Kate says AND THERE'S "SHIVER ME
TIMBERS," WHICH IS AN EXPRESSION
OF SURPRISE OR FEAR.
Kyla says AGH! THERE'S A SHARK!
SHIVER ME TIMBERS!
Kate says AYE! TALKING LIKE A
REAL PIRATE NOW. ALL RIGHT,
IT'S ABOUT TIME TO SET SAIL. BUT
FIRST, YOU'RE GOING TO NEED A
PIRATE NAME, KYLA. FOR EXAMPLE,
MY NAME IS CUTLASS KATE. AND I'M
CALLED THAT BECAUSE A CUTLASS
IS A KIND OF SWORD, AND I'VE
NEVER LOST A FIGHT IN MY LIFE.
Kyla says WOW.
Kate says AND SAILING WITH US
TODAY WE ALSO HAVE CAPTAIN PEG-
LEG. AND WE HAVE PEARL, ANOTHER
PIRATE. AND WE'VE GOT SNAKES.
AND THEN THERE'S THE EVIL PIRATE
PETE, WHO WE SOMETIMES SEE OUT
AT SEA. AND, JUDGING BY THE
LOOKS OF YOU, I'D CALL YOU...
MUSKETBALL BERNARD.
Kyla says I LOVE IT.
Kyla calls E.B. and says I'M GONNA TELL THIS TO E.B.
ARGH! AHOY, MATEY. IT'S
MUSKETBALL BERNARD SPEAKING.
E.B. says HUH?
Kyla says MUSKETBALL BERNARD
IS MY PIRATE NAME.
E.B. says OH. I'M LIKING
THE PIRATE COSTUME.
Kyla says THE STICK WASN'T
FOR A DOG. IT'S A PEG LEG
FOR A PIRATE. METHINKS
THIS MYSTERY BE ABOUT PIRATES.
E.B. says HOW WOULD PIRATES
FIT IN WITH THE BOTTLE?
OR THE BILL JOHNSTON LETTER?
Kyla says ARGH. YOU MAY HAVE A POINT.
E.B. says HMM... SO FAR I HAVEN'T
FOUND ANYTHING PIRATEY
ABOUT BILL JOHNSTON.
Kyla says HANG ON. I'M WITH PIRATE
RE-ENACTORS WHOSE WHOLE JOB
IS TO DRESS UP AND PRETEND THAT
THEY'RE SOMETHING THEY'RE NOT.
MAYBE THIS MYSTERY'S
ABOUT MAKE BELIEVE.
E.B. says AND THE BOTTLE COULD ALSO FIT
WITH MAKE BELIEVE, BECAUSE
SO MANY ADVENTURE STORIES
HAVE MESSAGES IN A BOTTLE.
Kyla says BUT WHAT DOES MAKE BELIEVE
HAVE TO DO WITH A "SALTY DOG"?
E.B. says MAYBE A SALTY DOG'S
A MAKE BELIEVE CHARACTER?
Kate says AYE! MUSKETBALL BERNARD,
IT'S TIME TO SET SAIL.
Kyla says YO-HO-HO! I'M SORRY,
BUT I GOTTA GO.
(music plays)
She gets on the ship and says SO, WHY IS MAKE BELIEVE
SO IMPORTANT IN YOUR JOB?
Kate says ALLOW ME TO DEMONSTRATE. DO
YOU WANT TO HAVE A SWORD FIGHT?
Kyla says YEAH, TOTALLY!
Kate says ARE YOU READY,
MUSKETBALL BERNARD?
Kyla says AYE, PIRATE KATE!
Kate says ALL RIGHT. CATCH, MATEY.
Kyla says OOH. WOAH. OKAY.
Kate says DON'T WORRY.
IT'S JUST PLASTIC.
IT'S NOT SHARP LIKE THE SWORDS
THAT REAL PIRATES WOULD USE.
Kyla says OKAY.
Kate says ALL RIGHT. PREPARE TO
DEFEND YOURSELF. EN GARDE! HA!
(FIGHTING)
NOT BAD. BUT LIKE I SAID,
I NEVER LOST A FIGHT.
HA, HA, HA! HO-HO!
Kyla says NICE.
Kate says SEE, IT'S FUN
TO PLAY-FIGHT, BECAUSE
AT THE END NOBODY GETS HURT.
Kyla says SO WHAT WERE
REAL PIRATES LIKE?
Kate says ACTUAL, REAL PIRATES
USED TO ROB SHIPS, AND A LOT OF
PEOPLE GOT HURT IN THE PROCESS.
Kyla says SO WHY DOES EVERYONE
THINK THEY WERE FUN, WHEN THEY
WERE ACTUALLY REALLY BAD MEN?
Kate says WELL, THEY WERE SEEN
AS BAD MEN UNTIL ABOUT 1885,
WHEN THE ADVENTURE NOVEL
"TREASURE ISLAND" GOT PUBLISHED.
AND THEN CAME "PETER PAN."
AND CAPTAIN HOOK, WHO WAS KIND
OF A FUN VERSION OF A REALLY
BAD PIRATE NAMED BLACKBEARD.
Illustrations of the books appear.
Kate says AND THEN THE "ARGH!" KIND
OF PIRATE TALK CAME ALONG
WHEN AN ACTOR PLAYED
LONG JOHN SILVER IN A MOVIE.
(KYLA'S PHONE RINGS.)
Kyla says HELLO?
E.B. says AHOY, MUSKETBALL BERNARD.
IT'S OILY BRUNO SMYTHE.
THAT'S MY PIRATE NAME,
ACCORDING TO THE "CREATE
YOUR PIRATE NAME" WEBSITE.
Kyla says THAT'S COOL. BUT
YOU KNOW WHAT'S NOT SO COOL?
REAL PIRATES.
E.B. says HUH?
Kyla says I'M LEARNING THAT
THE REAL ONES WERE ACTUALLY
REALLY BAD MEN.
E.B. says YOU KNOW, THAT'S JUST
LIKE THE SONG I DOWNLOADED OFF
THAT WEBSITE I SENT YOU.
B-B-B-B-BAD MEN
Kyla says IN BETWEEN DOWNLOADING
SONGS, DID YOU FIND ANY
INFORMATION ON THE BAD MEN
I'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT?
E.B. says YES, M'LADY, I HAVE.
AND THE FIRST THING IS... THEY
WEREN'T ALL BAD MEN. THERE WERE
SOME LOUSY LASSES TOO. THAT'S
PIRATE LANGUAGE FOR WOMEN.
Kyla says WOMEN PIRATES?
BLOW ME DOWN! I HAD NO IDEA.
E.B. says YEAH. THE FAMOUS FEMALE
PIRATE ANNE BONNY WAS KICKED OUT
OF HOME AS A TEENAGER BECAUSE
SHE HAD A WILD TEMPER.
In animation, a picture of Anne Bonny gets horns an a tail.
Anne says HA-HA-HA!
E.B. says BACK THEN WOMEN WEREN'T
ALLOWED ON SHIPS. BUT ANNE MADE
FRIENDS WITH CAPTAIN CALICO
JACK, AND HE LET HER STAY
ON HIS. THE THING IS, WHEN
CALICO'S CREW LOOTED SHIPS,
ANNE HAD TO DRESS LIKE A MAN.
Kyla says SHE PRETENDED TO BE A MAN?
E.B. says AVAST YE, KYLA!
BUT THAT'S ONLY HALF OF IT.
THIS WOMAN, MARY REED, PRETENDED
TO BE A BOY MOST OF HER LIFE,
EVEN CALLING HERSELF MARK
AND GETTING A JOB AS A SAILOR.
WHEN CALICO JACK'S PIRATES TOOK
OVER HER SHIP, MARY JOINED THEM.
LEGEND SAYS ONLY ANNE BONNY KNEW
MARY WAS A WOMAN. THAT'LL PUT
A SHIVER IN YOUR TIMBERS, EH?
Kyla says YEAH. I WONDER IF THIS MYSTERY
IS ABOUT PEOPLE PRETENDING TO BE
SOMEONE ELSE? WOMEN PRETENDED
TO BE MEN, AND PIRATES SEEM FUN
BUT ARE REALLY BAD.
E.B. says HMM... MAYBE BILL JOHNSTON
PRETENDED TO BE SOMETHING TOO,
AND THAT'S WHY INFORMATION
ON HIM IS SO HARD TO FIND.
Kyla says BUT HOW DOES THIS FIT IN
WITH A BOTTLE OR A "SALTY DOG"?
E.B. says HOPEFULLY, I'LL FIGURE IT OUT
WHEN I MEET TERRY SIDE, THE ONLY
GUY I FOUND WHO KNOWS ANYTHING
ABOUT OUR MYSTERIOUS BILL.
Kate says TREASURE!
Kyla says SORRY, E.B.
GOTTA GO CLAIM MY BOOTY.
E.B. says OKAY. SEE YOU LATER.
Kate opens a treasure trunk.
Kyla says WOW. SO WHERE DID
SUNKEN TREASURE COME FROM?
Kate says IT COMES FROM THE BOTTOM
OF THE OCEAN, AFTER A PIRATE
SHIP ATTACKS A SHIP, BATTLES
THE CREW, AND ACCIDENTALLY
SINKS THE SHIP, COMPLETELY.
Kyla says SO, IF PIRATES INVADED
ANOTHER SHIP, THEN ALL THIS
TREASURE IS STOLEN TREASURE?
Kate says THAT'S RIGHT. LIKE I SAID,
REAL PIRATES ARE REALLY BAD MEN.
AYE, THERE'S THE NASTY PIRATE
PETE. NOW THE REAL FUN STARTS.
Kyla says AWESOME.
A pirate approaches the ship on a small boat.
Kate and Kyla say ATTACK!
Kate says AYE, GET HIM GOOD.
(KYLA LAUGHS.)
The girls shoot water cannons toward him.
The pirate says AYE, GREAT JOB.
Kyla says SO, EVEN THOUGH THE WAY
WE THINK OF PIRATES TODAY MIGHT
NOT BE HOW THEY REALLY WERE,
THAT WAS A REALLY FUN THING
TO DO. AND IT'S ALWAYS FUN
TO PRETEND. ARGH!
Kate says ARGH!
(music plays)
E.B. makes a video and says I'M MEETING WITH
TERRY AND DEBBIE SIDE TO SEE
WHAT THEY CAN TELL ME
ABOUT THE MYSTERIOUS...
BILL JOHNSTON.
WHAT IS THIS PLACE? AGH!
(E.B. STARTLES.)
Terry and Debbie come out in pirate costumes.
Terry is in his fifties, with wavy white hair and a goatee.
Debbie is in her late forties, with chin-length straight brown hair.
Terry says MORNING, LAD.
E.B. says OH, HI. HELLO. UM... AHOY.
Terry says AYE. AHOY.
E.B. says CAN YOU TELL ME
ANYTHING ABOUT THIS CLUE HERE
AND WILLIAM JOHNSTON?
Terry says I AM WILLIAM JOHNSTON.
THIS IS MY WIFE, ANNE.
(E.B. LAUGHS.)
E.B. says YOU'RE LIKE THE REAL DEAL?
Terry says WELL, ACTUALLY,
WE PORTRAY BILL JOHNSTON AND
HIS WIFE IN OUR PIRATE FESTIVAL.
E.B. says HOLD ON. SO YOU SAY
BILL JOHNSTON WAS A PIRATE?
Terry says ONE OF THE FEW PIRATES
FROM CANADA, BUT TECHNICALLY
HE WAS A PRIVATEER.
E.B. says WAIT, WHAT'S A PRIVATEER?
Terry says WELL, IN TIMES OF WAR,
GOVERNMENTS WOULD SANCTION
COMMON ORDINARY MEN
TO BE PIRATES, LEGALLY.
E.B. says NO WAY.
Terry says ALSO KNOWN AS PRIVATEERS.
LET ME SEE YOUR CLUE AGAIN.
THIS IS A LETTER OF MARQUEE
TO CAPTAIN WILLIAM JOHNSTON,
AKA BILL JOHNSTON,
TO BE A PRIVATEER.
Debbie says LET'S GO INSIDE
AND SEE WHAT THAT MEANS.
E.B. says OKAY.
Debbie says E.B., THIS IS
THE SIR ROBERT PEEL.
E.B. says THE SHIP BE MIGHTY IMPRESSIVE.
Terry says AYE.
E.B. says BUT WHAT DOES THIS SHIP
HAVE TO DO WITH BILL JOHNSTON?
Terry says WELL, HE FAMOUSLY SUNK IT.
E.B. says IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT,
MAY 29TH, 1838, BILL JOHNSTON
HID AT MCDONALDS'S WHARF.
On a peer, an animated Bill says PEEKABOO!
E.B. says HE AND THIRTEEN OTHERS
WERE IN AMERICAN WATERS WAITING
FOR THE SHINY NEW CANADIAN SHIP
SIR ROBERT PEEL. THE MEN JUMPED
IT, DISGUISED AS FIRST NATIONS
SO THE WRONG PEOPLE WOULD
GET THE BLAME. THEY FORCED
THE SLEEPING PASSENGERS OFF THE
SHIP, STOLE FROM THEM, AND THEN
TOOK OVER THE SIR ROBERT PEEL.
PROBLEM WAS, NO ONE KNEW HOW TO
DRIVE THE SHIP. SO THEY SET IT
ON FIRE AND SUNK IT INSTEAD. SO
WHAT WAS BILL JOHNSTON PLANNING
TO DO WITH THE SIR ROBERT PEEL?
Terry says HE PLANNED ON ADDING IT
TO HIS FLEET TO INVADE CANADA.
E.B. says WHAT DO YOU MEAN
INVADE CANADA? I THOUGHT
BILL JOHNSTON WAS CANADIAN.
Terry says HE WAS, BUT IN THE WAR
OF 1812, HE CHANGED SIDES
HE CAME OVER TO AMERICA.
E.B. says OKAY, SO BILL JOHNSTON WAS
A PRIVATEER FOR THE AMERICANS.
Terry says AYE.
(MUSIC PLAYING.)
E.B. calls Kyla and says KYLA, YOU'LL NEVER
BELIEVE WHO BILL JOHNSTON WAS.
HE WAS A PRIVATEER, WHICH IS
LIKE A PIRATE LICENSED
BY THE GOVERNMENT.
KYLA! AHOY, MUSKETBALL BERNARD!
Kyla says SORRY, I JUST GOT SOME
REALLY AWESOME SONGS FROM
THAT WEBSITE YOU SHOWED ME.
BUT I'M BACK ON THE JOB NOW,
OILY BRUNO SMYTHE. DID YOU SAY
YOUR CLUE HAD SOMETHING
TO DO WITH PIRATES?
E.B. says NO. I SAID BILL WAS
A PRIVATEER. IT'S DIFFERENT.
IT'S LIKE A LEGAL PIRATE
LICENSED BY THE GOVERNMENT.
Kyla says WELL, ME CAP'N,
I HAVE SOMETHING FOR YE. I WAS
INVESTIGATING THE BOTTLE, AND
I THINK IT'S FROM A SHIP FROM
HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO. THIS LED
ME TO SHIPS, BACK TO PIRATES,
THEN "PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN."
E.B. says THE SEAS MAY BE ROUGH,
BUT I AM THE CAPTAIN.
Kyla says CALM DOWN THERE, JACK
SPARROW. CHECK OUT WHAT I GOT.
She plays a video and says SPANISH SAILORS FOUND A BOOTY
OF GOLD IN AMERICA AND THE
CARIBBEAN IN THE 1500S AND STOLE
IT FROM THE NATIVE AMERICANS.
Holding a sword, an animated Spaniard approaches a native with a treasure.
The native says HEY! AWW...
The native runs away and leaves the treasure behind.
The Spaniard says HA-HA!
Kyla says THEY STARTED SHIPPING
THE GOLD TO SPAIN...
An animated Spaniard says ARGH!
Kyla says ...UNTIL PIRATES
HEARD ALL ABOUT IT.
The pirate says ARGH, MATEY!
Kyla says THE WEIRD THING IS,
THE FIRST SPANISH SHIPS
WEREN'T LOOTED BY PIRATES
BUT BY FRENCH PRIVATEERS.
E.B. says PRIVATEERS? BLOW ME
DOWN! THAT MEANS THE GOVERNMENT
ALLOWED IT. WEIRD.
Kyla says THERE MUST HAVE BEEN
A WAR, AND THE FRENCH AND
THE SPANISH, I GUESS, WERE ON
OPPOSITE SIDES. THIS IS PROBABLY
ANOTHER WAY PEOPLE FOUGHT,
OILY BRUNO SMYTHE.
E.B. says ARGH! THEY SOUND
AS BAD AS PIRATES.
Kyla says THAT'D BE RIGHT, ME HARDY.
MAYBE THIS MYSTERY'S ABOUT
BAD PEOPLE THROUGH HISTORY.
E.B. says THAT FITS WITH THE
PIRATES AND PRIVATEERS,
ME BEAUTY, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE
BOTTLE OR THE "SALTY DOG" TAG?
Kyla says NOT SURE. UNLESS "SALTY."
BE ANOTHER WORD FOR "BAD"?
I'LL LOOK IT UP.
E.B. says OKAY. AND I'LL HEAVE HO,
AND PASS OUR BAD-PEOPLE THEORY
BY TERRY AND DEBBIE.
WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE
BAD THINGS BILL JOHNSTON DID?
Terry says LET ME SHOW YOU.
E.B. says THIS OBSTACLE COURSE
WAS SET UP SO YOU CAN BOARD
A SHIP THE SAME WAY A REAL
PIRATE WOULD'VE DONE IT.
Wearing a pirate hat, E.B. says I'M A PIRATE...
WITH SAFETY EQUIPMENT.
E.B. starts walking the curse.
Terry says YOU'RE BILL JOHNSTON,
SNEAKING ABOARD A SHIP. BILL
HATED THE BRITISH. THE BRITISH
COME IN, THEY SEIZED HIS STORE,
HIS SHIP, HIS LAND. HE COME
OVER TO THE AMERICAN SIDE,
WAS SWORN IN AS US CITIZEN.
HE WOULD DO ANYTHING IN HIS
POWER TO ATTACK THE BRITISH,
TO BE A THORN IN THEIR SIDE.
HE ATTACKED MANY SHIPS.
E.B. says JUST LIKE
BILL JOHNSTON DOES IT.
Terry says THAT'S HOW HE WOULDA DONE IT.
USING THE RIGGINGS, CLIMBING THE
ROPES, ANCHOR CHAINS. SNEAKING
UP ON THE BRITISH. YOU'D BE PART
OF JOHNSTON'S CREW FOR SURE.
E.B. says AYE!
Terry says AYE. WELL DONE, WELL DONE.
E.B. says HUZZAH!
SO, TERRY, WHAT WOULD HAPPEN
IF A PRIVATEER WERE TO BE
DISCOVERED ON A SHIP?
THAT WOULD NOT BE GOOD. HE'D
POSSIBLY HAVE TO WALK THE PLANK.
(E.B. SIGHS.)
(dramatic music plays)
E.B. grabs a rope and jumps off the plank says WOO!
(E.B.'S PHONE RINGS.)
Kyla says AHOY, LANDLUBBER.
I FOUND SOMEONE WHO CAN HELP
WITH THE BOTTLE CLUE. I'M OFF
TO THE PORT DOVER MUSEUM.
E.B. says HEY, DID YOU WORK OUT ANY MORE
ABOUT THE "SALTY DOG" TAG?
Kyla says I DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING
SAYING "SALTY" WAS BAD. SO THIS
LASS BE THINKING OUR MYSTERY'S
ABOUT SHIPWRECKS. PIRATES
WRECKED SHIPS ALL THE TIME.
E.B. says I LIKE THE CUT OF YOUR
JIB, MATEY. THE ROBERT PEEL
WAS A SHIPWRECK, SO IT FITS
WITH OUR FIRST TWO CLUES.
Kyla says COULD "SALTY" BE
THE NAME OF A SHIP?
E.B. says YES. I'M ON IT.
(music plays)
Kyla says I'M AT THE PORT DOVER HARBOUR
MUSEUM TO SEE IF THIS BOTTLE
WILL PROVE THAT GREAT AUNT
HERMIONE'S "SALTY DOG" MYSTERY
WAS ALL ABOUT SHIPWRECKS.
HI. CHRIS?
Chris says KYLA. WELCOME.
Chris is in his forties, with short blond hair and a goatee. He wears jeans and a burgundy polo shirt.
Kyla says NICE TO MEET YOU.
I'M TRYING TO SOLVE A MYSTERY I
THINK IS ABOUT SHIPWRECKS. COULD
YOU HELP ME WITH THIS CLUE?
Chris says ALL RIGHT. LET'S TAKE A LOOK.
IT'S GOOD YOU KEPT THIS
PROTECTED. BUT BEFORE YOU GO
AHEAD, LET'S GET SOME GLOVES.
THESE WILL HELP PROTECT
THE ARTIFACT FROM ANY OILS
THAT MIGHT BE ON OUR HANDS.
ALL RIGHT.
KYLA, I HATE TO TELL YOU,
BUT I DON'T THINK IT'S
MORE THAN FIVE YEARS OLD.
IT'S A MAPLE SYRUP BOTTLE.
Kyla says WOW. I THOUGHT
THIS WAS REALLY OLD. CAN WE
AT LEAST REMOVE THE PAPER?
Chris says ABSOLUTELY.
He takes out the message and unrolls it.
Kyla says WOW.
DO YOU RECOGNIZE THIS IMAGE?
A black and white image of a skull with headphones over two crossed bones appears on the paper.
Chris says CAN'T SAY THAT I DO.
Kyla says I'M GONNA SEND
A PICTURE TO E.B. DO YOU
THINK YOU CAN HOLD THIS?
Chris says SURE.
Kyla says NOW THAT I LOOK AT IT,
THIS BOTTLE AND THIS PICTURE
DEFINITELY DOESN'T LOOK LIKE
IT WAS FROM AN OLD SHIPWRECK.
Chris says I THINK IN THIS CASE
THE MESSAGE IN THE BOTTLE IS
MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE ARTIFACT
ITSELF. BUT IF YOU LOOK
AROUND THE MUSEUM, YOU'LL SEE
ALL KINDS OF ACTUAL ARTIFACTS
FROM SHIPWRECKS.
Kyla plays a clip with images of shipwrecked ships.
An animated Kyla in a diving suit says CHRIS TOLD ME THE
GREAT LAKES HAVE TONS OF
WELL PRESERVED SHIPWRECKS.
THEY'RE IN SHIPSHAPE CONDITION
BECAUSE FRESH, DEEP COLD WATER
IS MUCH NICER THAN NASTY SALTY
SEAWATER. TAKING THINGS FROM
THESE WRECKS IS A BIG NO-NO.
AFTER SO MANY YEARS UNDERWATER,
BRINGING SOMETHING BACK TO LAND
CAN TOTALLY WRECK IT.
Kyla says HOW DOES THE MUSEUM HAVE ALL
OF THESE ARTIFACTS IF YOU'RE
NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE THEM
FROM THE WRECKS?
Chris says ONCE IN A WHILE WHEN WE
FIND A REALLY SPECIAL SHIPWRECK,
SOMETHING THAT CAN TEACH US
ABOUT THE PAST, WE WOULD
CAREFULLY RECOVER THE ARTIFACTS
AND THEN DISPLAY THEM IN A
MUSEUM LIKE THIS. SOMETIMES
ARTIFACTS WILL COME UP IN A
FISHERMAN'S NET. AT THAT POINT,
IT'S REALLY TOO LATE TO LEAVE
THEM WHERE THEY WERE.
Kyla says YEAH.
Chris says SO OFTENTIMES THEY'LL COME
TO THE MUSEUM. A THIRD WAY THAT
WE GET ARTIFACTS IS THAT THEY
ACTUALLY WASH UP ON THE BEACH.
Now they appear on a beach.
Kyla finds a bottle in the sand and says WOAH!
IS IT OKAY TO TOUCH?
Chris says SURE, YEAH. PULL IT ON OUT.
LET'S SEE WHAT WE GOT THERE.
Kyla says WHAT IS IT?
Chris says THIS IS ACTUALLY A REALLY NEAT
LITTLE FIND. THIS IS A SODA
BOTTLE, AND BACK IN THE 1800S
WHEN THEY WOULD FILL IT WITH
CARBONATED SODA THEY WANTED TO
SHIP THEM ON THEIR SIDES SO THE
CORK WOULDN'T DRY OUT, OTHERWISE
YOU'D LOSE ALL YOUR FIZZ.
Kyla says SMART.
WAIT! WHAT'S THAT?
They find a round wooden piece with 3 holes.
Chris says THIS IS CALLED A "DEADEYE,"
AND IT'S PART OF A SAILING SHIP,
AND IT WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS
USED TO TENSION THE ROPES THAT
GO FROM THE DECK ALL THE WAY UP
TO THE MAST TO HOLD THE MAST UP.
AND THE REASON THEY CALL IT
A DEADEYE IS BECAUSE
IT LOOKS LIKE A SKULL,
WITH TWO EYES AND A NOSE.
Kyla says YEAH.
(KYLA'S PHONE RINGS.)
Kyla says OH, SORRY.
E.B. says ARGH, KYLA.
Kyla says HEY, E.B.
E.B. says I RESEARCHED THE SKULL
IMAGE. IT'S THE LOGO FOR THAT
WEBSITE WHERE WE DOWNLOAD MUSIC.
BUT LOOK WHAT ELSE I FOUND. THIS
WEBSITE HAS LINKS NOT JUST TO
MUSIC BUT TO TV SHOWS AND OTHER
STUFF THAT PEOPLE CAN DOWNLOAD
WITHOUT PAYING ANYTHING. THE
SITE'S IN BIG TROUBLE BECAUSE
GIVING AWAY DOWNLOADS THAT DON'T
BELONG TO THEM IS ILLEGAL.
Kyla says OH NO! SO WE'VE BEEN
BREAKING THE LAW?
WELL, WHAT DO WE DO NOW?
E.B. says WALK THE PLANK.
(KYLA LAUGHS.)
Kyla says COULDN'T WE JUST STOP
USING THOSE ILLEGAL WEBSITES?
E.B. says AYE, AYE, CAPTAIN.
PROBABLY A SAFER PLAN.
Kyla says HANG ON. WHAT DOES
THAT WEBSITE HAVE TO DO
WITH OUR MYSTERY?
E.B. says WELL, WHAT THEY'RE DOING
AND WHAT WE'VE BEEN DOING
BE INTERNET PIRACY.
Kyla says SHIVER ME TIMBERS!
E.B. says METHINKS THIS MYSTERY
BE ON DIFFERENT KINDS OF PIRACY
THROUGH HISTORY.
Kyla says AYE, AYE. I'LL SEE WHAT
ELSE I CAN FIND OUT FROM CHRIS.
BY THE WAY, DID YOU FIGURE OUT
THE FILE TAG?
IT'S NOT THE NAME OF A SHIP,
BUT SINCE I FOUND OUT THIS INFO
ABOUT PIRACY, MAYBE IT'S
THE NAME OF A PIRATE.
AVAST, I'LL CHECK IT OUT.
Kyla says SEE YA.
OKAY, SO I'M TRYING TO SOLVE
A MYSTERY ABOUT PIRACY.
WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT IT?
Chris says WELL, THERE ARE MODERN
DAY PIRATES THAT STILL CAPTURE
VESSELS AND STEAL THINGS, AND
THAT'S MOSTLY ON THE OTHER SIDE
OF THE WORLD. HERE, WE HAVE
A DIFFERENT KIND OF PIRATE,
AND THAT'S DIVERS THAT GO DOWN,
VISIT SHIPWRECKS,
SEE THINGS THAT THEY WANT,
AND THEY TAKE THEM.
Kyla says THEY'RE LIKE TODAY'S
TREASURE HUNTERS. IS IT ILLEGAL?
Chris says IT'S ABSOLUTELY ILLEGAL.
AND WE'RE DOING EVERYTHING WE
CAN TO EDUCATE DIVERS TO LET
THEM KNOW THAT THEY SHOULDN'T BE
DOING THAT.
Chris shows her a video and says HERE'S SOME DIVERS
ON A SHIPWRECK.
Kyla says WOW.
Chris says HERE WE'VE GOT
THE ANCHOR CHAIN.
AND THERE'S THE SHIP'S ANCHOR,
JUST LIKE WE SAW IN THE MUSEUM.
Kyla says YEAH, WOW.
Chris says THIS IS A GREAT
SHIPWRECK BECAUSE WE CAN SEE
A LOT OF THE BITS AND PIECES
OF HOW THE SHIP WAS BUILT
AND HOW IT WAS PUT TOGETHER.
THERE'S THE ANCHOR WINCH. IT'S
GOT THE CHAIN WRAPPED AROUND IT.
Kyla says IT LOOKS HUGE.
Chris says IT IS. ABSOLUTELY.
IT'S REALLY BIG. AND THERE ARE
HUNDREDS OF SHIPWRECKS JUST
LIKE THIS IN THE GREAT LAKES.
Kyla says SO LEAVING ARTIFACTS
IN SHIPWRECKS HELPS US
TELL THEIR STORIES?
Chris says ABSOLUTELY. IT'S
ALWAYS BEST TO LEAVE THINGS
WHERE YOU FOUND THEM.
Kyla says THANK YOU! I THINK YOU
JUST HELPED ME SOLVE MY MYSTERY.
Chris says GREAT.
In the basement, Kyla listens to music with her earphones on.
(MUSIC PLAYING, KYLA HUMMING)
(KYLA HUMMING)
E.B. touches her on the shoulder.
Kyla says AGH! SORRY.
(E.B. LAUGHS.)
SORRY. I JUST DOWNLOADED
SOME GREAT NEW MUSIC
FROM THAT
LEGAL
SITE.
E.B. says AH.
Kyla says I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF IT.
E.B. says COOL. SEND ME A LINK.
Kyla says AND... SENT. OKAY.
SO, NOW, WHERE ARE WE AT
WITH OUR MYSTERY, ME LADDIE?
E.B. says WELL, I HAVE NEWS, M'LASSY.
"SALTY DOG" WAS NOT A SHIP.
Kyla says HUH. THEN WHAT IS IT?
E.B. says WELL, IN PIRATE-SPEAK,
SOMEONE WHO SPENDS A LOT OF TIME
AT SEA IS "SALTY," AND A "DOG."
IS SOMEONE WHO STEALS FOOD AND
DOES OTHER BAD THINGS WITHOUT
THINKING. SO A "SALTY DOG."
MEANS A BAD PIRATE.
Kyla says DO YOU THINK GREAT AUNT
HERMIONE WAS TRYING TO TELL US
THAT PIRATES WERE BILGE SUCKERS?
E.B. says BIL-WHAT?
Kyla says THAT'S PIRATE-SPEAK FOR
"BAD," AND IT TOTALLY FITS IN
WITH MY PIRATE ADVENTURE.
E.B. says OKAY. WELL, THEN, YEAH,
PIRATES ARE BILGE SUCKERS. BUT
PRIVATEERS STOLE, PIRATES STOLE,
TREASURE HUNTERS STEAL,
INTERNET PIRACY IS STEALING.
BOTTOM LINE: IF YOU STEAL,
YOU'RE A SALTY DOG.
Kyla says ABSOLUTELY. SO PLAYING
A PIRATE ON HALLOWEEN IS FINE,
BUT BEING A REAL LIFE PIRATE
IS NEVER OKAY.
E.B. says ARGH!
Kyla says ARGH!
E.B. says ARGH!
(KYLA LAUGHS.)
They post a video and say MYSTERY SOLVED! POSTING
TO
THE MYSTERY FILES
WEBSITE.

LIKE A DOG, LIKE A DOG
LIKE A DOG, LIKE A DOG
DOO-DOO, DOO-DOO, DOO-DOO
LIKE A DOG, LIKE A DOG
E.B. is in his mid-teens with curly brown hair in an afro and he wears jeans and a blue and greens striped polo shirt.
Kyla comes in and touches his shoulder.
Kyla is in her mid-teens, with long slightly wavy brown hair in braids. She wears jeans, a pale pink T-shirt and a denim jacket.
E.B. says OH!
SORRY. I JUST FOUND THIS WEBSITE
WHERE I CAN DOWNLOAD ALL
THIS GREAT MUSIC FREE.
Kyla says OOH! SEND ME THE LINK.
E.B. says ALL RIGHT. AND... SENT.
WHAT MYSTERY FILE IS
CALLING OUT MY NAME TODAY?
He reads a label on a suitcase that and OOH! "SALTY DOG."
SALTY DOG, SALTY DOG
SALTY DOG
(music plays)
Kyla takes out a wooden weapon and says HMM...
HOW DOES THIS FIT
WITH "SALTY DOG"?
E.B. says MAYBE IT'S A STICK
A DOG WOULD CHEW?
Kyla reads a label on it and says "IF LOST RETURN
TO 588 HOG'S BACK ROAD."
I'M GONNA START THERE.
E.B. says ALL RIGHT. WELL,
CHECK THIS OUT. IT'S SOME
KIND OF LETTER WRITTEN TO
CAPTAIN WILLIAM JOHNSTON.
I'LL START RESEARCHING THIS.
Kyla says HMM...
E.B. says SWEET!
A MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE?
Kyla says LET'S SEE WHAT IT SAYS.
E.B. says UH... HANG ON. THAT
BOTTLE COULD BE OLD. I READ
SOMEWHERE THAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED
TO TREAT ARTIFACTS VERY
CAREFULLY TO PROTECT THEM.
Kyla says GOOD IDEA. I REMEMBER
A MUSEUM WHERE I SAW SOMETHING
LIKE THIS. I'LL CALL THEM
BEFORE WE DO ANYTHING CRAZY,
LIKE PULL OUT THE PAPER.
E.B. says YEAH, YEAH. OKAY,
SO, THERE'S A DOG NAMED SALTY,
AND THIS PAPER IS THE OWNER'S
DOG LICENSE, AND THIS STICK IS
THE DOG'S FAVOURITE CHEW TOY,
AND THIS BOTTLE IS...
IT DOESN'T FIT.
Kyla says TIME TO INVESTIGATE?
E.B. says YEAH!
Music plays as the opening of the show rolls.
A song goes HISTORY IS FULL OF MYSTERIES
GREAT AUNT HERMIONE
COULD BE HEARD TO SAY
Aunt Hermione stands next to a knight’s armour. She’s in her fifties, with short white hair and wears glasses, beige trousers, a belted white short-sleeved shirt, an explorer’s hat. She carries a cross-body bag.
The song goes YOU HAVE TO KNOW
WHAT CAME BEFORE
TO NAVIGATE THE WORLD TODAY
Clips show images of power lines, an abacus and a computer.
The song continues SHE WAS GOING TO WRITE A BOOK
CALLED "MYSTERY FILES."
TO TELL WHAT SHE UNCOVERED
BUT TIME RAN OUT
NEW ADVENTURES CAME FIRST
SO SHE LEFT HER SECRETS
UNDISCOVERED
She writes down notes on a notebook, holds a globe, travels by jeep, flies an airplane.
The song continues ALL SHE LEFT BEHIND
WAS A HOUSE FULL OF CLUES
BUT E.B. AND KYLA HAVE A PLAN
In the basement, a drawer in a chest opens and random objects come out.
The song continues THEY'RE GONNA SOLVE
EACH MYSTERY FILE
AND FINISH
WHAT HERMIONE BEGAN
THEY'LL SOLVE
E.B. and Kyla appear looking through Hermione’s notes.
The song continues THE MYSTERY FILES
UNRAVEL ALL THE MYSTERIES
THEY'LL SOLVE
THE MYSTERY FILES
UPLOAD HIDDEN HISTORIES
THEY'LL SOLVE
THE MYSTERY FILES
E.B. and Kyla high-five.
The title of the show reads "The Mystery Files."
(music plays)
Kyla records a video and says I'M HERE AT HOG'S
BACK ROAD TO FIND OUT WHAT
GREAT AUNT HERMIONE WAS TRYING
TO TELL US ABOUT THE "SALTY DOG."
WHO OWNS THIS STICK.
Kate says ARGH!
Kate is in her twenties, with long wavy blond hair and she wears a pirate costume.
Kyla says OH. HI. UM... I THINK
I'M IN THE RIGHT PLACE. UM...
I HAVE THIS CLUE FROM MY
GREAT AUNT HERMIONE'S FILES.
Kate says ARGH! THAT BE A PEG LEG,
MATEY. IT'S PART OF
A PIRATE COSTUME.
Kyla says OH, WOW! PIRATES ARE FUN.
Kate says THAT'S WHY I'M
A PRATE RE-ENACTOR.
Kyla says THAT'S SUCH A COOL JOB.
Kate says WELL, WE'RE ABOUT TO SET
SAIL IN A COUPLE OF MINUTES,
IF YOU WANT TO COME ALONG.
Kyla says YEAH, SURE.
(music plays)
They now stand on a peer, next to a pirate ship.
Kyla is now in a pirate costume.
Kate says VERY AUTHENTIC, KYLA.
Kyla says THANK YOU.
Kate says BUT YOU CAN'T BE A REAL
PIRATE JUST LOOKING LIKE A
PIRATE. YOU ALSO NEED TO KNOW
HOW TO TALK LIKE A PIRATE.
Kyla says I KNOW A WORD... ARGH!
Kate says WHY, THAT'S A GREAT
PIRATE WORD. ONE OF A PIRATE'S
FAVOURITES. THERE'S "MATEY,"
WHICH MEANS "FRIEND."
Kyla says MATEY.
Kate says THERE'S "AHOY,"
WHICH MEANS "HELLO."
Kyla says AHOY, MATEY.
Kate says "LANDLUBBER."
Kyla says WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
Kate says WELL IT MEANS
ANYBODY WHO'S NOT A PIRATE.
THERE'S ALSO "LAND AHOY."
Kyla says LAND AHOY!
Kate says AND THERE'S "SHIVER ME
TIMBERS," WHICH IS AN EXPRESSION
OF SURPRISE OR FEAR.
Kyla says AGH! THERE'S A SHARK!
SHIVER ME TIMBERS!
Kate says AYE! TALKING LIKE A
REAL PIRATE NOW. ALL RIGHT,
IT'S ABOUT TIME TO SET SAIL. BUT
FIRST, YOU'RE GOING TO NEED A
PIRATE NAME, KYLA. FOR EXAMPLE,
MY NAME IS CUTLASS KATE. AND I'M
CALLED THAT BECAUSE A CUTLASS
IS A KIND OF SWORD, AND I'VE
NEVER LOST A FIGHT IN MY LIFE.
Kyla says WOW.
Kate says AND SAILING WITH US
TODAY WE ALSO HAVE CAPTAIN PEG-
LEG. AND WE HAVE PEARL, ANOTHER
PIRATE. AND WE'VE GOT SNAKES.
AND THEN THERE'S THE EVIL PIRATE
PETE, WHO WE SOMETIMES SEE OUT
AT SEA. AND, JUDGING BY THE
LOOKS OF YOU, I'D CALL YOU...
MUSKETBALL BERNARD.
Kyla says I LOVE IT.
Kyla calls E.B. and says I'M GONNA TELL THIS TO E.B.
ARGH! AHOY, MATEY. IT'S
MUSKETBALL BERNARD SPEAKING.
E.B. says HUH?
Kyla says MUSKETBALL BERNARD
IS MY PIRATE NAME.
E.B. says OH. I'M LIKING
THE PIRATE COSTUME.
Kyla says THE STICK WASN'T
FOR A DOG. IT'S A PEG LEG
FOR A PIRATE. METHINKS
THIS MYSTERY BE ABOUT PIRATES.
E.B. says HOW WOULD PIRATES
FIT IN WITH THE BOTTLE?
OR THE BILL JOHNSTON LETTER?
Kyla says ARGH. YOU MAY HAVE A POINT.
E.B. says HMM... SO FAR I HAVEN'T
FOUND ANYTHING PIRATEY
ABOUT BILL JOHNSTON.
Kyla says HANG ON. I'M WITH PIRATE
RE-ENACTORS WHOSE WHOLE JOB
IS TO DRESS UP AND PRETEND THAT
THEY'RE SOMETHING THEY'RE NOT.
MAYBE THIS MYSTERY'S
ABOUT MAKE BELIEVE.
E.B. says AND THE BOTTLE COULD ALSO FIT
WITH MAKE BELIEVE, BECAUSE
SO MANY ADVENTURE STORIES
HAVE MESSAGES IN A BOTTLE.
Kyla says BUT WHAT DOES MAKE BELIEVE
HAVE TO DO WITH A "SALTY DOG"?
E.B. says MAYBE A SALTY DOG'S
A MAKE BELIEVE CHARACTER?
Kate says AYE! MUSKETBALL BERNARD,
IT'S TIME TO SET SAIL.
Kyla says YO-HO-HO! I'M SORRY,
BUT I GOTTA GO.
(music plays)
She gets on the ship and says SO, WHY IS MAKE BELIEVE
SO IMPORTANT IN YOUR JOB?
Kate says ALLOW ME TO DEMONSTRATE. DO
YOU WANT TO HAVE A SWORD FIGHT?
Kyla says YEAH, TOTALLY!
Kate says ARE YOU READY,
MUSKETBALL BERNARD?
Kyla says AYE, PIRATE KATE!
Kate says ALL RIGHT. CATCH, MATEY.
Kyla says OOH. WOAH. OKAY.
Kate says DON'T WORRY.
IT'S JUST PLASTIC.
IT'S NOT SHARP LIKE THE SWORDS
THAT REAL PIRATES WOULD USE.
Kyla says OKAY.
Kate says ALL RIGHT. PREPARE TO
DEFEND YOURSELF. EN GARDE! HA!
(FIGHTING)
NOT BAD. BUT LIKE I SAID,
I NEVER LOST A FIGHT.
HA, HA, HA! HO-HO!
Kyla says NICE.
Kate says SEE, IT'S FUN
TO PLAY-FIGHT, BECAUSE
AT THE END NOBODY GETS HURT.
Kyla says SO WHAT WERE
REAL PIRATES LIKE?
Kate says ACTUAL, REAL PIRATES
USED TO ROB SHIPS, AND A LOT OF
PEOPLE GOT HURT IN THE PROCESS.
Kyla says SO WHY DOES EVERYONE
THINK THEY WERE FUN, WHEN THEY
WERE ACTUALLY REALLY BAD MEN?
Kate says WELL, THEY WERE SEEN
AS BAD MEN UNTIL ABOUT 1885,
WHEN THE ADVENTURE NOVEL
"TREASURE ISLAND" GOT PUBLISHED.
AND THEN CAME "PETER PAN."
AND CAPTAIN HOOK, WHO WAS KIND
OF A FUN VERSION OF A REALLY
BAD PIRATE NAMED BLACKBEARD.
Illustrations of the books appear.
Kate says AND THEN THE "ARGH!" KIND
OF PIRATE TALK CAME ALONG
WHEN AN ACTOR PLAYED
LONG JOHN SILVER IN A MOVIE.
(KYLA'S PHONE RINGS.)
Kyla says HELLO?
E.B. says AHOY, MUSKETBALL BERNARD.
IT'S OILY BRUNO SMYTHE.
THAT'S MY PIRATE NAME,
ACCORDING TO THE "CREATE
YOUR PIRATE NAME" WEBSITE.
Kyla says THAT'S COOL. BUT
YOU KNOW WHAT'S NOT SO COOL?
REAL PIRATES.
E.B. says HUH?
Kyla says I'M LEARNING THAT
THE REAL ONES WERE ACTUALLY
REALLY BAD MEN.
E.B. says YOU KNOW, THAT'S JUST
LIKE THE SONG I DOWNLOADED OFF
THAT WEBSITE I SENT YOU.
B-B-B-B-BAD MEN
Kyla says IN BETWEEN DOWNLOADING
SONGS, DID YOU FIND ANY
INFORMATION ON THE BAD MEN
I'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT?
E.B. says YES, M'LADY, I HAVE.
AND THE FIRST THING IS... THEY
WEREN'T ALL BAD MEN. THERE WERE
SOME LOUSY LASSES TOO. THAT'S
PIRATE LANGUAGE FOR WOMEN.
Kyla says WOMEN PIRATES?
BLOW ME DOWN! I HAD NO IDEA.
E.B. says YEAH. THE FAMOUS FEMALE
PIRATE ANNE BONNY WAS KICKED OUT
OF HOME AS A TEENAGER BECAUSE
SHE HAD A WILD TEMPER.
In animation, a picture of Anne Bonny gets horns an a tail.
Anne says HA-HA-HA!
E.B. says BACK THEN WOMEN WEREN'T
ALLOWED ON SHIPS. BUT ANNE MADE
FRIENDS WITH CAPTAIN CALICO
JACK, AND HE LET HER STAY
ON HIS. THE THING IS, WHEN
CALICO'S CREW LOOTED SHIPS,
ANNE HAD TO DRESS LIKE A MAN.
Kyla says SHE PRETENDED TO BE A MAN?
E.B. says AVAST YE, KYLA!
BUT THAT'S ONLY HALF OF IT.
THIS WOMAN, MARY REED, PRETENDED
TO BE A BOY MOST OF HER LIFE,
EVEN CALLING HERSELF MARK
AND GETTING A JOB AS A SAILOR.
WHEN CALICO JACK'S PIRATES TOOK
OVER HER SHIP, MARY JOINED THEM.
LEGEND SAYS ONLY ANNE BONNY KNEW
MARY WAS A WOMAN. THAT'LL PUT
A SHIVER IN YOUR TIMBERS, EH?
Kyla says YEAH. I WONDER IF THIS MYSTERY
IS ABOUT PEOPLE PRETENDING TO BE
SOMEONE ELSE? WOMEN PRETENDED
TO BE MEN, AND PIRATES SEEM FUN
BUT ARE REALLY BAD.
E.B. says HMM... MAYBE BILL JOHNSTON
PRETENDED TO BE SOMETHING TOO,
AND THAT'S WHY INFORMATION
ON HIM IS SO HARD TO FIND.
Kyla says BUT HOW DOES THIS FIT IN
WITH A BOTTLE OR A "SALTY DOG"?
E.B. says HOPEFULLY, I'LL FIGURE IT OUT
WHEN I MEET TERRY SIDE, THE ONLY
GUY I FOUND WHO KNOWS ANYTHING
ABOUT OUR MYSTERIOUS BILL.
Kate says TREASURE!
Kyla says SORRY, E.B.
GOTTA GO CLAIM MY BOOTY.
E.B. says OKAY. SEE YOU LATER.
Kate opens a treasure trunk.
Kyla says WOW. SO WHERE DID
SUNKEN TREASURE COME FROM?
Kate says IT COMES FROM THE BOTTOM
OF THE OCEAN, AFTER A PIRATE
SHIP ATTACKS A SHIP, BATTLES
THE CREW, AND ACCIDENTALLY
SINKS THE SHIP, COMPLETELY.
Kyla says SO, IF PIRATES INVADED
ANOTHER SHIP, THEN ALL THIS
TREASURE IS STOLEN TREASURE?
Kate says THAT'S RIGHT. LIKE I SAID,
REAL PIRATES ARE REALLY BAD MEN.
AYE, THERE'S THE NASTY PIRATE
PETE. NOW THE REAL FUN STARTS.
Kyla says AWESOME.
A pirate approaches the ship on a small boat.
Kate and Kyla say ATTACK!
Kate says AYE, GET HIM GOOD.
(KYLA LAUGHS.)
The girls shoot water cannons toward him.
The pirate says AYE, GREAT JOB.
Kyla says SO, EVEN THOUGH THE WAY
WE THINK OF PIRATES TODAY MIGHT
NOT BE HOW THEY REALLY WERE,
THAT WAS A REALLY FUN THING
TO DO. AND IT'S ALWAYS FUN
TO PRETEND. ARGH!
Kate says ARGH!
(music plays)
E.B. makes a video and says I'M MEETING WITH
TERRY AND DEBBIE SIDE TO SEE
WHAT THEY CAN TELL ME
ABOUT THE MYSTERIOUS...
BILL JOHNSTON.
WHAT IS THIS PLACE? AGH!
(E.B. STARTLES.)
Terry and Debbie come out in pirate costumes.
Terry is in his fifties, with wavy white hair and a goatee.
Debbie is in her late forties, with chin-length straight brown hair.
Terry says MORNING, LAD.
E.B. says OH, HI. HELLO. UM... AHOY.
Terry says AYE. AHOY.
E.B. says CAN YOU TELL ME
ANYTHING ABOUT THIS CLUE HERE
AND WILLIAM JOHNSTON?
Terry says I AM WILLIAM JOHNSTON.
THIS IS MY WIFE, ANNE.
(E.B. LAUGHS.)
E.B. says YOU'RE LIKE THE REAL DEAL?
Terry says WELL, ACTUALLY,
WE PORTRAY BILL JOHNSTON AND
HIS WIFE IN OUR PIRATE FESTIVAL.
E.B. says HOLD ON. SO YOU SAY
BILL JOHNSTON WAS A PIRATE?
Terry says ONE OF THE FEW PIRATES
FROM CANADA, BUT TECHNICALLY
HE WAS A PRIVATEER.
E.B. says WAIT, WHAT'S A PRIVATEER?
Terry says WELL, IN TIMES OF WAR,
GOVERNMENTS WOULD SANCTION
COMMON ORDINARY MEN
TO BE PIRATES, LEGALLY.
E.B. says NO WAY.
Terry says ALSO KNOWN AS PRIVATEERS.
LET ME SEE YOUR CLUE AGAIN.
THIS IS A LETTER OF MARQUEE
TO CAPTAIN WILLIAM JOHNSTON,
AKA BILL JOHNSTON,
TO BE A PRIVATEER.
Debbie says LET'S GO INSIDE
AND SEE WHAT THAT MEANS.
E.B. says OKAY.
Debbie says E.B., THIS IS
THE SIR ROBERT PEEL.
E.B. says THE SHIP BE MIGHTY IMPRESSIVE.
Terry says AYE.
E.B. says BUT WHAT DOES THIS SHIP
HAVE TO DO WITH BILL JOHNSTON?
Terry says WELL, HE FAMOUSLY SUNK IT.
E.B. says IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT,
MAY 29TH, 1838, BILL JOHNSTON
HID AT MCDONALDS'S WHARF.
On a peer, an animated Bill says PEEKABOO!
E.B. says HE AND THIRTEEN OTHERS
WERE IN AMERICAN WATERS WAITING
FOR THE SHINY NEW CANADIAN SHIP
SIR ROBERT PEEL. THE MEN JUMPED
IT, DISGUISED AS FIRST NATIONS
SO THE WRONG PEOPLE WOULD
GET THE BLAME. THEY FORCED
THE SLEEPING PASSENGERS OFF THE
SHIP, STOLE FROM THEM, AND THEN
TOOK OVER THE SIR ROBERT PEEL.
PROBLEM WAS, NO ONE KNEW HOW TO
DRIVE THE SHIP. SO THEY SET IT
ON FIRE AND SUNK IT INSTEAD. SO
WHAT WAS BILL JOHNSTON PLANNING
TO DO WITH THE SIR ROBERT PEEL?
Terry says HE PLANNED ON ADDING IT
TO HIS FLEET TO INVADE CANADA.
E.B. says WHAT DO YOU MEAN
INVADE CANADA? I THOUGHT
BILL JOHNSTON WAS CANADIAN.
Terry says HE WAS, BUT IN THE WAR
OF 1812, HE CHANGED SIDES
HE CAME OVER TO AMERICA.
E.B. says OKAY, SO BILL JOHNSTON WAS
A PRIVATEER FOR THE AMERICANS.
Terry says AYE.
(MUSIC PLAYING.)
E.B. calls Kyla and says KYLA, YOU'LL NEVER
BELIEVE WHO BILL JOHNSTON WAS.
HE WAS A PRIVATEER, WHICH IS
LIKE A PIRATE LICENSED
BY THE GOVERNMENT.
KYLA! AHOY, MUSKETBALL BERNARD!
Kyla says SORRY, I JUST GOT SOME
REALLY AWESOME SONGS FROM
THAT WEBSITE YOU SHOWED ME.
BUT I'M BACK ON THE JOB NOW,
OILY BRUNO SMYTHE. DID YOU SAY
YOUR CLUE HAD SOMETHING
TO DO WITH PIRATES?
E.B. says NO. I SAID BILL WAS
A PRIVATEER. IT'S DIFFERENT.
IT'S LIKE A LEGAL PIRATE
LICENSED BY THE GOVERNMENT.
Kyla says WELL, ME CAP'N,
I HAVE SOMETHING FOR YE. I WAS
INVESTIGATING THE BOTTLE, AND
I THINK IT'S FROM A SHIP FROM
HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO. THIS LED
ME TO SHIPS, BACK TO PIRATES,
THEN "PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN."
E.B. says THE SEAS MAY BE ROUGH,
BUT I AM THE CAPTAIN.
Kyla says CALM DOWN THERE, JACK
SPARROW. CHECK OUT WHAT I GOT.
She plays a video and says SPANISH SAILORS FOUND A BOOTY
OF GOLD IN AMERICA AND THE
CARIBBEAN IN THE 1500S AND STOLE
IT FROM THE NATIVE AMERICANS.
Holding a sword, an animated Spaniard approaches a native with a treasure.
The native says HEY! AWW...
The native runs away and leaves the treasure behind.
The Spaniard says HA-HA!
Kyla says THEY STARTED SHIPPING
THE GOLD TO SPAIN...
An animated Spaniard says ARGH!
Kyla says ...UNTIL PIRATES
HEARD ALL ABOUT IT.
The pirate says ARGH, MATEY!
Kyla says THE WEIRD THING IS,
THE FIRST SPANISH SHIPS
WEREN'T LOOTED BY PIRATES
BUT BY FRENCH PRIVATEERS.
E.B. says PRIVATEERS? BLOW ME
DOWN! THAT MEANS THE GOVERNMENT
ALLOWED IT. WEIRD.
Kyla says THERE MUST HAVE BEEN
A WAR, AND THE FRENCH AND
THE SPANISH, I GUESS, WERE ON
OPPOSITE SIDES. THIS IS PROBABLY
ANOTHER WAY PEOPLE FOUGHT,
OILY BRUNO SMYTHE.
E.B. says ARGH! THEY SOUND
AS BAD AS PIRATES.
Kyla says THAT'D BE RIGHT, ME HARDY.
MAYBE THIS MYSTERY'S ABOUT
BAD PEOPLE THROUGH HISTORY.
E.B. says THAT FITS WITH THE
PIRATES AND PRIVATEERS,
ME BEAUTY, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE
BOTTLE OR THE "SALTY DOG" TAG?
Kyla says NOT SURE. UNLESS "SALTY."
BE ANOTHER WORD FOR "BAD"?
I'LL LOOK IT UP.
E.B. says OKAY. AND I'LL HEAVE HO,
AND PASS OUR BAD-PEOPLE THEORY
BY TERRY AND DEBBIE.
WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE
BAD THINGS BILL JOHNSTON DID?
Terry says LET ME SHOW YOU.
E.B. says THIS OBSTACLE COURSE
WAS SET UP SO YOU CAN BOARD
A SHIP THE SAME WAY A REAL
PIRATE WOULD'VE DONE IT.
Wearing a pirate hat, E.B. says I'M A PIRATE...
WITH SAFETY EQUIPMENT.
E.B. starts walking the curse.
Terry says YOU'RE BILL JOHNSTON,
SNEAKING ABOARD A SHIP. BILL
HATED THE BRITISH. THE BRITISH
COME IN, THEY SEIZED HIS STORE,
HIS SHIP, HIS LAND. HE COME
OVER TO THE AMERICAN SIDE,
WAS SWORN IN AS US CITIZEN.
HE WOULD DO ANYTHING IN HIS
POWER TO ATTACK THE BRITISH,
TO BE A THORN IN THEIR SIDE.
HE ATTACKED MANY SHIPS.
E.B. says JUST LIKE
BILL JOHNSTON DOES IT.
Terry says THAT'S HOW HE WOULDA DONE IT.
USING THE RIGGINGS, CLIMBING THE
ROPES, ANCHOR CHAINS. SNEAKING
UP ON THE BRITISH. YOU'D BE PART
OF JOHNSTON'S CREW FOR SURE.
E.B. says AYE!
Terry says AYE. WELL DONE, WELL DONE.
E.B. says HUZZAH!
SO, TERRY, WHAT WOULD HAPPEN
IF A PRIVATEER WERE TO BE
DISCOVERED ON A SHIP?
THAT WOULD NOT BE GOOD. HE'D
POSSIBLY HAVE TO WALK THE PLANK.
(E.B. SIGHS.)
(dramatic music plays)
E.B. grabs a rope and jumps off the plank says WOO!
(E.B.'S PHONE RINGS.)
Kyla says AHOY, LANDLUBBER.
I FOUND SOMEONE WHO CAN HELP
WITH THE BOTTLE CLUE. I'M OFF
TO THE PORT DOVER MUSEUM.
E.B. says HEY, DID YOU WORK OUT ANY MORE
ABOUT THE "SALTY DOG" TAG?
Kyla says I DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING
SAYING "SALTY" WAS BAD. SO THIS
LASS BE THINKING OUR MYSTERY'S
ABOUT SHIPWRECKS. PIRATES
WRECKED SHIPS ALL THE TIME.
E.B. says I LIKE THE CUT OF YOUR
JIB, MATEY. THE ROBERT PEEL
WAS A SHIPWRECK, SO IT FITS
WITH OUR FIRST TWO CLUES.
Kyla says COULD "SALTY" BE
THE NAME OF A SHIP?
E.B. says YES. I'M ON IT.
(music plays)
Kyla says I'M AT THE PORT DOVER HARBOUR
MUSEUM TO SEE IF THIS BOTTLE
WILL PROVE THAT GREAT AUNT
HERMIONE'S "SALTY DOG" MYSTERY
WAS ALL ABOUT SHIPWRECKS.
HI. CHRIS?
Chris says KYLA. WELCOME.
Chris is in his forties, with short blond hair and a goatee. He wears jeans and a burgundy polo shirt.
Kyla says NICE TO MEET YOU.
I'M TRYING TO SOLVE A MYSTERY I
THINK IS ABOUT SHIPWRECKS. COULD
YOU HELP ME WITH THIS CLUE?
Chris says ALL RIGHT. LET'S TAKE A LOOK.
IT'S GOOD YOU KEPT THIS
PROTECTED. BUT BEFORE YOU GO
AHEAD, LET'S GET SOME GLOVES.
THESE WILL HELP PROTECT
THE ARTIFACT FROM ANY OILS
THAT MIGHT BE ON OUR HANDS.
ALL RIGHT.
KYLA, I HATE TO TELL YOU,
BUT I DON'T THINK IT'S
MORE THAN FIVE YEARS OLD.
IT'S A MAPLE SYRUP BOTTLE.
Kyla says WOW. I THOUGHT
THIS WAS REALLY OLD. CAN WE
AT LEAST REMOVE THE PAPER?
Chris says ABSOLUTELY.
He takes out the message and unrolls it.
Kyla says WOW.
DO YOU RECOGNIZE THIS IMAGE?
A black and white image of a skull with headphones over two crossed bones appears on the paper.
Chris says CAN'T SAY THAT I DO.
Kyla says I'M GONNA SEND
A PICTURE TO E.B. DO YOU
THINK YOU CAN HOLD THIS?
Chris says SURE.
Kyla says NOW THAT I LOOK AT IT,
THIS BOTTLE AND THIS PICTURE
DEFINITELY DOESN'T LOOK LIKE
IT WAS FROM AN OLD SHIPWRECK.
Chris says I THINK IN THIS CASE
THE MESSAGE IN THE BOTTLE IS
MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE ARTIFACT
ITSELF. BUT IF YOU LOOK
AROUND THE MUSEUM, YOU'LL SEE
ALL KINDS OF ACTUAL ARTIFACTS
FROM SHIPWRECKS.
Kyla plays a clip with images of shipwrecked ships.
An animated Kyla in a diving suit says CHRIS TOLD ME THE
GREAT LAKES HAVE TONS OF
WELL PRESERVED SHIPWRECKS.
THEY'RE IN SHIPSHAPE CONDITION
BECAUSE FRESH, DEEP COLD WATER
IS MUCH NICER THAN NASTY SALTY
SEAWATER. TAKING THINGS FROM
THESE WRECKS IS A BIG NO-NO.
AFTER SO MANY YEARS UNDERWATER,
BRINGING SOMETHING BACK TO LAND
CAN TOTALLY WRECK IT.
Kyla says HOW DOES THE MUSEUM HAVE ALL
OF THESE ARTIFACTS IF YOU'RE
NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE THEM
FROM THE WRECKS?
Chris says ONCE IN A WHILE WHEN WE
FIND A REALLY SPECIAL SHIPWRECK,
SOMETHING THAT CAN TEACH US
ABOUT THE PAST, WE WOULD
CAREFULLY RECOVER THE ARTIFACTS
AND THEN DISPLAY THEM IN A
MUSEUM LIKE THIS. SOMETIMES
ARTIFACTS WILL COME UP IN A
FISHERMAN'S NET. AT THAT POINT,
IT'S REALLY TOO LATE TO LEAVE
THEM WHERE THEY WERE.
Kyla says YEAH.
Chris says SO OFTENTIMES THEY'LL COME
TO THE MUSEUM. A THIRD WAY THAT
WE GET ARTIFACTS IS THAT THEY
ACTUALLY WASH UP ON THE BEACH.
Now they appear on a beach.
Kyla finds a bottle in the sand and says WOAH!
IS IT OKAY TO TOUCH?
Chris says SURE, YEAH. PULL IT ON OUT.
LET'S SEE WHAT WE GOT THERE.
Kyla says WHAT IS IT?
Chris says THIS IS ACTUALLY A REALLY NEAT
LITTLE FIND. THIS IS A SODA
BOTTLE, AND BACK IN THE 1800S
WHEN THEY WOULD FILL IT WITH
CARBONATED SODA THEY WANTED TO
SHIP THEM ON THEIR SIDES SO THE
CORK WOULDN'T DRY OUT, OTHERWISE
YOU'D LOSE ALL YOUR FIZZ.
Kyla says SMART.
WAIT! WHAT'S THAT?
They find a round wooden piece with 3 holes.
Chris says THIS IS CALLED A "DEADEYE,"
AND IT'S PART OF A SAILING SHIP,
AND IT WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS
USED TO TENSION THE ROPES THAT
GO FROM THE DECK ALL THE WAY UP
TO THE MAST TO HOLD THE MAST UP.
AND THE REASON THEY CALL IT
A DEADEYE IS BECAUSE
IT LOOKS LIKE A SKULL,
WITH TWO EYES AND A NOSE.
Kyla says YEAH.
(KYLA'S PHONE RINGS.)
Kyla says OH, SORRY.
E.B. says ARGH, KYLA.
Kyla says HEY, E.B.
E.B. says I RESEARCHED THE SKULL
IMAGE. IT'S THE LOGO FOR THAT
WEBSITE WHERE WE DOWNLOAD MUSIC.
BUT LOOK WHAT ELSE I FOUND. THIS
WEBSITE HAS LINKS NOT JUST TO
MUSIC BUT TO TV SHOWS AND OTHER
STUFF THAT PEOPLE CAN DOWNLOAD
WITHOUT PAYING ANYTHING. THE
SITE'S IN BIG TROUBLE BECAUSE
GIVING AWAY DOWNLOADS THAT DON'T
BELONG TO THEM IS ILLEGAL.
Kyla says OH NO! SO WE'VE BEEN
BREAKING THE LAW?
WELL, WHAT DO WE DO NOW?
E.B. says WALK THE PLANK.
(KYLA LAUGHS.)
Kyla says COULDN'T WE JUST STOP
USING THOSE ILLEGAL WEBSITES?
E.B. says AYE, AYE, CAPTAIN.
PROBABLY A SAFER PLAN.
Kyla says HANG ON. WHAT DOES
THAT WEBSITE HAVE TO DO
WITH OUR MYSTERY?
E.B. says WELL, WHAT THEY'RE DOING
AND WHAT WE'VE BEEN DOING
BE INTERNET PIRACY.
Kyla says SHIVER ME TIMBERS!
E.B. says METHINKS THIS MYSTERY
BE ON DIFFERENT KINDS OF PIRACY
THROUGH HISTORY.
Kyla says AYE, AYE. I'LL SEE WHAT
ELSE I CAN FIND OUT FROM CHRIS.
BY THE WAY, DID YOU FIGURE OUT
THE FILE TAG?
IT'S NOT THE NAME OF A SHIP,
BUT SINCE I FOUND OUT THIS INFO
ABOUT PIRACY, MAYBE IT'S
THE NAME OF A PIRATE.
AVAST, I'LL CHECK IT OUT.
Kyla says SEE YA.
OKAY, SO I'M TRYING TO SOLVE
A MYSTERY ABOUT PIRACY.
WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT IT?
Chris says WELL, THERE ARE MODERN
DAY PIRATES THAT STILL CAPTURE
VESSELS AND STEAL THINGS, AND
THAT'S MOSTLY ON THE OTHER SIDE
OF THE WORLD. HERE, WE HAVE
A DIFFERENT KIND OF PIRATE,
AND THAT'S DIVERS THAT GO DOWN,
VISIT SHIPWRECKS,
SEE THINGS THAT THEY WANT,
AND THEY TAKE THEM.
Kyla says THEY'RE LIKE TODAY'S
TREASURE HUNTERS. IS IT ILLEGAL?
Chris says IT'S ABSOLUTELY ILLEGAL.
AND WE'RE DOING EVERYTHING WE
CAN TO EDUCATE DIVERS TO LET
THEM KNOW THAT THEY SHOULDN'T BE
DOING THAT.
Chris shows her a video and says HERE'S SOME DIVERS
ON A SHIPWRECK.
Kyla says WOW.
Chris says HERE WE'VE GOT
THE ANCHOR CHAIN.
AND THERE'S THE SHIP'S ANCHOR,
JUST LIKE WE SAW IN THE MUSEUM.
Kyla says YEAH, WOW.
Chris says THIS IS A GREAT
SHIPWRECK BECAUSE WE CAN SEE
A LOT OF THE BITS AND PIECES
OF HOW THE SHIP WAS BUILT
AND HOW IT WAS PUT TOGETHER.
THERE'S THE ANCHOR WINCH. IT'S
GOT THE CHAIN WRAPPED AROUND IT.
Kyla says IT LOOKS HUGE.
Chris says IT IS. ABSOLUTELY.
IT'S REALLY BIG. AND THERE ARE
HUNDREDS OF SHIPWRECKS JUST
LIKE THIS IN THE GREAT LAKES.
Kyla says SO LEAVING ARTIFACTS
IN SHIPWRECKS HELPS US
TELL THEIR STORIES?
Chris says ABSOLUTELY. IT'S
ALWAYS BEST TO LEAVE THINGS
WHERE YOU FOUND THEM.
Kyla says THANK YOU! I THINK YOU
JUST HELPED ME SOLVE MY MYSTERY.
Chris says GREAT.
In the basement, Kyla listens to music with her earphones on.
(MUSIC PLAYING, KYLA HUMMING)
(KYLA HUMMING)
E.B. touches her on the shoulder.
Kyla says AGH! SORRY.
(E.B. LAUGHS.)
SORRY. I JUST DOWNLOADED
SOME GREAT NEW MUSIC
FROM THAT
LEGAL
SITE.
E.B. says AH.
Kyla says I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF IT.
E.B. says COOL. SEND ME A LINK.
Kyla says AND... SENT. OKAY.
SO, NOW, WHERE ARE WE AT
WITH OUR MYSTERY, ME LADDIE?
E.B. says WELL, I HAVE NEWS, M'LASSY.
"SALTY DOG" WAS NOT A SHIP.
Kyla says HUH. THEN WHAT IS IT?
E.B. says WELL, IN PIRATE-SPEAK,
SOMEONE WHO SPENDS A LOT OF TIME
AT SEA IS "SALTY," AND A "DOG."
IS SOMEONE WHO STEALS FOOD AND
DOES OTHER BAD THINGS WITHOUT
THINKING. SO A "SALTY DOG."
MEANS A BAD PIRATE.
Kyla says DO YOU THINK GREAT AUNT
HERMIONE WAS TRYING TO TELL US
THAT PIRATES WERE BILGE SUCKERS?
E.B. says BIL-WHAT?
Kyla says THAT'S PIRATE-SPEAK FOR
"BAD," AND IT TOTALLY FITS IN
WITH MY PIRATE ADVENTURE.
E.B. says OKAY. WELL, THEN, YEAH,
PIRATES ARE BILGE SUCKERS. BUT
PRIVATEERS STOLE, PIRATES STOLE,
TREASURE HUNTERS STEAL,
INTERNET PIRACY IS STEALING.
BOTTOM LINE: IF YOU STEAL,
YOU'RE A SALTY DOG.
Kyla says ABSOLUTELY. SO PLAYING
A PIRATE ON HALLOWEEN IS FINE,
BUT BEING A REAL LIFE PIRATE
IS NEVER OKAY.
E.B. says ARGH!
Kyla says ARGH!
E.B. says ARGH!
(KYLA LAUGHS.)
