In the basement, E.B. spins Kyla around.

Kyla is in her mid-teens, with long slightly wavy brown hair. She wears jeans and a hot pink hoodie.

E.B. is in his mid-teens with curly brown hair in an afro and he wears jeans, a blue T-shirt and an unbuttoned plaid shirt.

A label on a file reads "Changing the way we see."

E.B. says READY AND... SPIN!
ONE, TWO, THREE,
FOUR, FIVE, STOP.
"CHANGING THE WAY WE SEE."

Kyla opens the file and says says SOUNDS LIKE
A COOL MYSTERY FILE.

She takes a photo of a portrait and says HMM... NICE PAINTING.
I WONDER WHO'S THE WOMAN IN IT.
DID SHE DO SOMETHING
TO CHANGE THE WAY WE SEE?

E.B. says OR MAYBE HERMIONE MEANT WE
HAVE TO LOOK AT IT ANOTHER WAY
TO SEE SOMETHING DIFFERENTLY.

He takes out a pair of 3 D glasses and puts them on.

E.B. says UH, NOPE.
STILL LOOKS THE SAME.
(E.B. SIGHS.)

Kyla grabs a postcard with the name "Malinda Prud’homme" on the back.

Kyla says MAYBE THIS NAME
WILL LEAD TO SOMETHING.

E.B. grabs a portrait and says NOW WHAT IS THIS? WOAH!
WHEN I TURN IT LIKE THIS THERE'S
A PICTURE OF A LITTLE BOY.

Kyla says THAT'S SO STRANGE.
AND THE PICTURE LOOKS
REALLY OLD-TIMEY.

E.B. says BUT MOVING IT DIFFERENT
WAYS CHANGES THE WAY WE SEE IT,
JUST LIKE HERMIONE'S FILE LABEL.

Kyla says OH, AND THERE'S
SOMETHING ON THE SIDE.

E.B. says WHAT'S THAT...
"J.W. HIRST. DEUGERRIAN."

Kyla says WHAT'S A "DEUGERRIAN"?

E.B. says I DON'T KNOW. SOUNDS
LIKE SOMETHING TO DO WITH,
LIKE, DAGGERS. DAGGER-IAN.

Kyla says IT'S ALL YOURS.

E.B. says OKAY.

Kyla says A DVD.

E.B. says COOL.

Kyla says "MAX SKWARNA."

E.B. says HUH.

Kyla says WONDER WHAT'S ON HERE.
I'LL TACKLE THIS ONE.

E.B. says SOUNDS GOOD. LET'S DO IT.

They high-five.

Kyla and E.B. say YEAH!

Music plays as the opening of the show rolls.

A song goes HISTORY IS FULL OF MYSTERIES
GREAT AUNT HERMIONE
COULD BE HEARD TO SAY

Aunt Hermione stands next to a knight’s armour. She’s in her fifties, with short white hair and wears glasses, beige trousers, a belted white short-sleeved shirt, an explorer’s hat. She carries a cross-body bag.

The song goes YOU HAVE TO KNOW
WHAT CAME BEFORE
TO NAVIGATE THE WORLD TODAY

Clips show images of power lines, an abacus and a computer.

The song continues SHE WAS GOING TO WRITE A BOOK
CALLED "MYSTERY FILES."
TO TELL WHAT SHE UNCOVERED
BUT TIME RAN OUT
NEW ADVENTURES CAME FIRST
SO SHE LEFT HER SECRETS
UNDISCOVERED

She writes down notes on a notebook, holds a globe, travels by jeep, flies an airplane.

The song continues ALL SHE LEFT BEHIND
WAS A HOUSE FULL OF CLUES
BUT E.B. AND KYLA HAVE A PLAN

In the basement, a drawer in a chest opens and random objects come out.

The song continues THEY'RE GONNA SOLVE
EACH MYSTERY FILE
AND FINISH
WHAT HERMIONE BEGAN
THEY'LL SOLVE

E.B. and Kyla appear looking through Hermione’s notes.

The song continues THE MYSTERY FILES
UNRAVEL ALL THE MYSTERIES
THEY'LL SOLVE
THE MYSTERY FILES
UPLOAD HIDDEN HISTORIES
THEY'LL SOLVE
THE MYSTERY FILES

E.B. and Kyla high-five.

The title of the show reads "The Mystery Files."

(music plays)

Kyla records a video and says THE PERSON WHO SIGNED
THIS IS AN ARTIST NAMED MALINDA
PRUD'HOMME. I'M MEETING WITH HER
AT AN ART STUDIO. HOPEFULLY, SHE
CAN HELP ME SOLVE THE MYSTERY
ON "CHANGING THE WAY WE SEE."

She meets Malinda in her studio. Several female portraits hang on the walls.

Malinda is in her early thirties, with long slightly wavy blond hair in a half-do. She wears jeans, a beige sweater and a statement necklace.

Malinda says OH. HI, KYLA.

Kyla says HI. NICE TO MEET YOU.

Malinda says NICE TO MEET YOU.
I'M GLAD YOU'RE HERE.

Kyla says DID YOU PAINT ALL OF THESE?

Malinda says I DID.

Kyla says THEY'RE AMAZING.

Malinda says THANK YOU.

Kyla says HEY. THAT'S THE SAME PICTURE
ON MY CLUE. SO, THE CHAPTER MY
GREAT AUNT HERMIONE WAS GOING TO
WRITE ABOUT IS CALLED "CHANGING
THE WAY WE SEE." IS THERE MAYBE
A SPECIAL WAY THAT I CAN LOOK
AT THE PAINTING TO MAKE
SOMETHING ELSE APPEAR?

Malinda says NO, THERE'S NO HIDDEN
OBJECTS IN MY PAINTINGS.
THE PURPOSE OF MY WORK IS
TO PROVE THAT ALL WOMEN ARE
BEAUTIFUL. IT DOESN'T MATTER
HOW OLD OR YOUNG THEY ARE,
BIG OR SMALL, OR WHAT ETHNICITY
THEY COME FROM; THEY'RE ALL
UNIQUELY BEAUTIFUL, JUST THE WAY
THEY ARE. HOW ABOUT I DO
A QUICK PORTRAIT OF YOU?

Kyla says YEAH, TOTALLY. AND MAYBE
THAT'D HELP ME SOLVE MY MYSTERY.

Malinda says AND HOW ABOUT YOU DO A
PORTRAIT OF ME AT THE SAME TIME?

Kyla says SURE. IT MIGHT NOT BE
THE BEST, BUT I'LL DO IT.

Malinda says AWESOME.

Kyla says WHERE DO YOU
USUALLY START WHEN YOU...

Malinda says I USUALLY START
BY DOING THE HEAD SHAPE.

(music plays)

They start sketching.

Kyla says HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE
TO DO ONE OF THESE PAINTINGS?

Malinda says DEPENDING ON THE
AMOUNT OF DETAIL, IT COULD BE
ANYTHING FROM LIKE A WEEK TO
MONTHS. SOME PEOPLE REALLY ENJOY
THE PROCESS OF SITTING FOR
A PORTRAIT LIKE THEY DID
IN THE OLDEN TIMES.
(KYLA LAUGHS.)

Kyla says I GUESS THE ONLY WAY
TO HAVE A PICTURE OF YOURSELF
OR YOUR FAMILY BACK THEN WAS
TO HAVE IT PAINTED. BUT IF
IT TOOK A LOT OF TIME TO MAKE
A GOOD PORTRAIT, IT MUST HAVE
COST A LOT OF MONEY TOO.

Malinda says IT DEFINITELY DID. THAT'S WHY
PORTRAITURE WASN'T AFFORDABLE
TO THE EVERYDAY PERSON.
IT WAS MAINLY ONLY RICH PEOPLE
THAT HAD THE MONEY TO PAY
FOR A PORTRAIT.

An animated triple portrait of a king appears.

The 3 quarter profile YOUR HAIR LOOKS JUST RIGHT.

The face on says OH.

The full profile says YOUR BEARD LOOKS SO REALISTIC.

The face on says OOH.

Kyla says LOTS OF IMPORTANT PEOPLE
LIKE KINGS, QUEENS, POPES,
AND PRESIDENTS HAD OFFICIAL
PORTRAITS OF THEMSELVES PAINTED.
BUT FOR THE AVERAGE PERSON,
HAVING A FAMILY MEMORY IN
A PAINTING WASN'T POSSIBLE.

Malinda says ALL RIGHT. AWESOME JOB.

Kyla says NOW I SEE THAT
IT TAKES A REALLY LONG TIME
TO GET THESE DONE.
WOAH.
(MELINDA LAUGHS.)
THAT'S SO AWESOME.

Malinda says THANKS.

Kyla says THAT CAME OUT SO NICE.
WOW. MAYBE HERMIONE MEANT
THAT ARTISTS WHO PAINT PEOPLE
CAN CHANGE THE WAY THEY LOOK
OR THE WAY THEY SEE THEMSELVES.

Malinda says HMM... WELL, EVERY
ARTIST DOES HAVE THEIR OWN
UNIQUE STYLE, SO IT'S POSSIBLE.
(E.B.'S PHONE RINGS.)

Kyla says HEY, E.B.

E.B. says HI, KYLA.

Kyla says CHECK THIS OUT.

E.B. says WOAH. IT REALLY DOES
LOOK LIKE YOU. NICE SKETCH.

Kyla says I KNOW. IT WAS SUPER-
COOL HAVING A REAL ARTIST
DRAW A PICTURE OF ME.

E.B. says DID YOU FIND OUT
ANYTHING MORE THAT'LL HELP US
SOLVE THE MYSTERY OF
"CHANGING THE WAY WE SEE"?

Kyla says WELL, BEFORE CAMERA'S
WERE AROUND, YOU COULD ONLY
PAINT A PICTURE, AND ONLY RICH
PEOPLE COULD AFFORD PORTRAITS.
BUT I'M STILL NOT SURE
WHAT HERMIONE'S MYSTERY FILE
IS ABOUT. ANYTHING ON
THAT WEIRD PICTURE CLUE?

E.B. says WELL, I LOOKED UP
THE WORD WRITTEN ON IT,
"DEUGERRIAN." IT TURNS OUT
THERE'S SUCH A THING AS A
DAGUERRIAN ARTIST. I'M ACTUALLY
ABOUT TO MEET ONE RIGHT NOW.
I HOPE HE DOESN'T USE DAGGERS,
BECAUSE I FORGOT TO BRING
MY DAGGER-PROOF VEST.
(E.B. LAUGHS.)

Kyla says DIDN'T YOUR DAD
SHRINK IT IN THE DRYER?

E.B. says HAH-HAH. VERY FUNNY, KYLA.

Kyla says SEE YA. THANKS AGAIN,
MELINDA. AND... I WILL TRY
TO FINISH MY PORTRAIT ONCE
WE'VE SOLVED OUR MYSTERY.

AND WHILE YOU'RE SOLVING THAT
MYSTERY, I'M GOING TO BE WORKING
ON YOUR PORTRAIT. AND I'LL SEND
IT TO YOU WHEN I'M DONE.

Kyla says AWESOME. THANK YOU. SEE YA.

Malinda says MY PLEASURE. BYE.

E.B. says I'M ABOUT TO MEET
MIKE ROBINSON. HE'S A DAGUERRIAN
ARTIST, AND IT SOUNDS KINDA
SCARY, BUT HE WAS SUPER-NICE ON
THE PHONE. SO, FINGERS CROSSED.

(music plays)

Mike is in his late forties, balding and with a trimmed beard. He wears glasses, jeans and a blue shirt.

Mike says OH. HI, E.B.

E.B. says MIKE.

Mike says WELCOME.

E.B. says THANK YOU.

Mike says THANKS FOR COMING BY.

E.B. says NICE TO MEET YOU.

Mike says NICE TO MEET YOU TOO.

E.B. sighs and says OKAY.
I WAS A BIT NERVOUS YOU WERE
GONNA BE LIKE A DAGGER
THROWER OR SOMETHING.

Mike says NO. OH, NO, NO.

E.B. says SO WHY IS IT CALLED
THAT, DAGUERRIAN?

Mike says WELL, A DAGUERRIAN
ARTIST IS ONE WHO PRACTICES
THE DAGUERREOTYPE PROCESS.

Mike shows him a series of pictures on the walls and says IT'S NAMED AFTER THE INVENTOR,
LOUIS JACQUES MANDÉ DAGUERRE.
SO THESE ARE MY DAGUERREOTYPES
HERE. I MADE THEM. THESE ARE
SOME LANDSCAPE VIEWS AND SOME
STILL-LIFES AND SOME PORTRAITS.
THESE ARE 170 YEARS OLD, AND
THESE STILL HAVE THE PRESENCE...

E.B. says NO WAY.

Mike says ...AND THE LIFE-LIKENESS
OF THE PEOPLE...

E.B. says YEAH.

Mike says WHAT'S THAT?

E.B. says WELL, YEAH. THIS LOOKS
JUST LIKE THIS. IT'S
SURPRISINGLY VERY CLEAR TO SEE.
I'M GOING ALL THE WAY
TO FRANCE FOR THIS ONE.

In animation, E.B. appears with a thick moustache and fluffy brown hair.

He says ALLO. JE M'APPELLE
LOUIS JACQUES MANDÉ DAGUERRE,
BUT EVERYONE KNOWS MESIMPLY AS DAGUERRE.

E.B. says BEFORE DAGUERRE,
OTHER PHOTOGRAPHERS WEREN'T
AS SUCCESSFUL. THESE ARE THE
VERY FIRST PICTURES. IT TOOK
EIGHT HOURS TO TAKE THIS ONE.
NOT VERY USER-FRIENDLY.

A very blurry picture appears.

Dagueree says SO, IN 1839, I
INVENTED SOMETHING MUCH BETTER.
THE DAGUERREOTYPE.

Mike says BEFORE THAT, IF YOU WANTED
A PORTRAIT, YOU HAD TO PAINT IT.

E.B. says YEAH, THAT'S...

Mike says AND SO FOR THE FIRST
TIME IN HISTORY, PHOTOGRAPHY
HAS MADE THE LIKENESS
AVAILABLE TO THE MASSES.

E.B. says WOW. SO THIS DAGUERREOTYPE WAS
IN A FILE LABELED "CHANGING THE
WAY WE SEE." DO THESE PHOTOS
CHANGE THE WAY WE SEE, SOMEHOW?

Mike says I'M NOT SURE WHAT
YOUR AUNT WAS MEANING BY THAT,
BUT THEY'RE FUN TO MAKE.
YOU WANNA MAKE ONE?

E.B. says NO WAY!

Mike says COME ON.

E.B. says YES!

Mike says SO THIS IS MY STUDIO, WHERE
WE'LL TAKE THE PICTURE. BUT IT
ALL STARTS WITH A SILVER PLATE.

E.B. says WAIT, THIS IS SILVER?

Mike says YEAH.

E.B. says WOAH.

Mike says BUT IT'S NOT READY YET.
WE HAVE TO GO INTO THE DARKROOM
AND PREPARE IT TO RECEIVE
YOUR IMAGE.

E.B. says AH.

Mike says SO THIS IS THE FIRST
STEP OF THE PROCESS. THIS IS
MY POLISHING SUPPORT STAND.

E.B. says HUH.

Mike says AND THIS IS WHERE WE HAVE TO
MAKE THE PLATE PERFECTLY SHINY.

E.B. says POLISHING WAS ONLY THE
BEGINNING. AFTER THAT, MIKE PUT
THE PLATE INTO SOME CHEMICALS
THAT MADE IT SENSITIVE TO LIGHT,
SO THAT IT COULD BE EXPOSED
IN THE CAMERA.

(KYLA'S PHONE RINGS.)

E.B. says HEY, KYLA. GUESS WHAT? I'M GONNA
TAKE A PICTURE LIKE THE FAMOUS
DAGUERRE, BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT
A DAGUERRIAN ARTIST DOES.

Kyla says COOL. AND YOU DIDN'T
GET PELTED WITH DAGGERS. BONUS.
I LOOKED UP DAGUERRIAN TOO,
AND I LANDED ON LOTS OF
INTERESTING STUFF.
I DISCOVERED THAT THE DAGUERRE
WAY OF MAKING PICTURES WAS THE
FIRST REALLY SUCCESSFUL KIND
OF PHOTOGRAPHY. PHOTO STUDIOS
STARTED POPPING UP ALL OVER
THE PLACE. IT WAS STILL A BIT
EXPENSIVE, AND COULD COST ABOUT
5 DOLLARS TO GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN,
WHICH WAS ABOUT A WEEK'S SALARY
BACK IN 1840. BUT IT WAS
A LOT CHEAPER THAN HAVING
YOUR PORTRAIT PAINTED.
SO NOW REGULAR PEOPLE COULD SEE
PICTURES OF THEMSELVES AND THEIR
FAMILY THE WAY THEY ACTUALLY
LOOKED IN REAL LIFE.

An animated picture of a woman says HEE-HEE-HEE. I LOOK SO REAL!

Kyla says AND CHECK OUT THE FIRST
DAGUERREOTYPE SELF-PORTRAIT
THAT DAGUERRE TOOK OF HIMSELF.
THIS MIGHT HAVE BEEN ONE OF
THE FIRST SELFIES IN HISTORY.

E.B. says MAYBE THAT'S WHAT
HERMIONE MEANT BY "CHANGING
THE WAY WE SEE." AT FIRST PEOPLE
COULD ONLY SEE THEMSELVES IN
PAINTINGS, BUT WITH PHOTOGRAPHS
PEOPLE COULD SEE WHAT
THEY REALLY LOOKED LIKE.

Kyla says YOU COULD BE ONTO SOMETHING.
BUT I FEEL LIKE THERE'S GOTTA
BE MORE. I ALSO STILL HAVE
THE THIRD CLUE TO CHECK OUT.

E.B. says OH, OKAY.
MIKE'S BACK. GOTTA GO.

Kyla says SEE YA.

Mike says OKAY? I'VE GOT
THE PLATE READY.

E.B. says OH, GREAT.

Mike says KINDLY TAKE A SEAT.

E.B. says OKAY. BUT BEFORE
I SIT DOWN, CAN I ASK
WHAT IS THIS THING FOR?

He points at a metal stand with a clamp on the end.

Mike says THIS IS TO HELP YOU
HOLD STILL.

E.B. says OKAY.

Mike says BECAUSE THE EXPOSURE TIME
IS GOING TO BE ABOUT 25 SECONDS.

E.B. says SO YOU HAVE TO SIT
EXTREMELY STILL.

He sits in a chair and puts his head in the clamp.

Mike says VERY STILL. OTHERWISE
YOU'D BE A BLURRY PHOTOGRAPH.
THIS LOOKS GREAT. IMAGINE
YOU'RE LOOKING 170 YEARS
INTO THE FUTURE. SO I'M GOING
TO COVER THE LENS.

E.B. says UH-HUH.

Mike says I'M GOING TO PLACE
THE PLATE INTO THE CAMERA.
AND WHEN YOU'RE READY,
IT'LL BE 25 SECONDS.

E.B. says WOO! BRR... OKAY. I'M READY.

Mike says AND HERE WE GO. ONE,
TWO... TEN... FIFTEEN...
TWENTY-FIVE. AND, VOILA.

E.B. says YOUR TURN TO SIT IN THE CHAIR,
AND I'LL TAKE THE PICTURE.

Mike says I'M SORRY.
IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY.
IT'S ONLY GOOD FOR ONE SHOT.

E.B. says OH!

E.B. says I'M JUST GOING TO DEVELOP IT.
I'LL BE BACK IN A FEW MINUTES.

E.B. says ALL RIGHT. ALL-RIGHTY.

E.B. calls Kyla.

Kyla says HEY, E.B.

E.B. says YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE
HOW LONG IT TAKES TO TAKE
A PHOTO LIKE THEY DID
IN THE 1840S. AND YOU COULD
ONLY TAKE ONE AT A TIME!

Kyla says I GUESS THEY HAD TO BE
PATIENT. BUT IT WAS STILL FASTER
THAN HAVING AN ARTIST
PAINT YOUR PORTRAIT.

E.B. says TRUE. BUT IN THE TIME
THAT ME AND MIKE TOOK THE PHOTO,
I COULD'VE, LIKE, TAKEN
20 SELFIES AND SHARED IT
WITH, LIKE, 100 FRIENDS
IN, LIKE, 20 SECONDS.

Kyla says YEAH. BUT, LISTEN.
I CHECKED OUT THE DVD CLUE,
AND NOW I'M REALLY NOT SURE
WHAT HERMIONE WAS GOING
TO WRITE ABOUT IN HER BOOK.
THE DVD HAS PICTURES OF BIRDS
AND BUILDINGS AND PEOPLE.

E.B. says WAY TO THROW US
OFF TRACK, HERMIONE.

Kyla says SHE OBVIOUSLY HAD
HER REASONS. I'LL LOOK INTO
THE NAME WRITTEN ON THE DVD.

Mike says HEY, E.B. COME AND
HELP ME FINISH THE PICTURE.

E.B. says SWEET.

Mike says SO THE PLATE'S BEEN
DEVELOPED. THIS NEXT STEP
IS CALLED "FIXING" THE IMAGE.
SO POUR IT ON THE PLATE...

E.B. says WE USED OTHER CHEMICALS
TO MAKE THE PICTURE PERMANENT
AND TO BRIGHTEN IT UP.
AND ALCOHOL FLAME MAKES IT
DEVELOP FASTER AND MORE EVENLY.
THEN RINSE...
DRY THE PLATE, AND VOILA.
THAT IS SO COOL. IT'S SO CLEAR!
THAT'S ME. I LOOK LIKE I'M FROM
THE 1840S. AND IT'S DONE NOW?

Mike says WELL, WE JUST HAVE
TO PUT IT BEHIND GLASS
SO IT WON'T TARNISH.

E.B. says MIKE TOLD ME THAT ABOUT
115 YEARS AGO A DIFFERENT KIND
OF PROCESS AND DIFFERENT CAMERAS
WERE INVENTED. IT MEANT THAT
PEOPLE COULD TAKE PICTURES A LOT
FASTER. AND THEY DIDN'T HAVE
TO DO ALL THE WORK THEMSELVES
TO GET THE PICTURES PRINTED OUT.
REGULAR PEOPLE COULD NOW BUY
CAMERAS AND TAKE PICTURES OF
EVERYTHING, FROM THEIR FAMILY...

In animation, several E.B.s on a family picture say CHEESE.

E.B. says ...TO THEIR DOG...

An animated picture of a dog says WOOF, WOOF.

E.B. says TO THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS.

Mike says THERE YOU ARE, E.B. ALL
SEALED BEHIND GLASS AND SAFE.

E.B. says NO WAY. IT MAKES ME FEEL
LIKE I'M IN THE 1800S AND THAT
I'M LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE.
BUT WHEN NEWER CAMERAS CAME OUT,
DID ANYTHING ELSE CHANGE?

Mike says WELL, YES. WITH
THE CHANGE IN PHOTOGRAPHIC
TECHNOLOGIES, THE CAMERA LEFT
THE STUDIO. HERE'S AN EXAMPLE.
LEWIS HINE, BEFORE THE FIRST
WORLD WAR - HERE'S A PICTURE
OF HIM WITH HIS HANDHELD CAMERA.

E.B. says LEWIS HINE WAS A TEACHER
WHO BECAME A PHOTOGRAPHER
BECAUSE HE WANTED TO SHOW THE
WORLD HOW BAD SOME KIDS HAD IT.
JUST OVER 100 YEARS AGO, KIDS
AS YOUNG AS FIVE YEARS OLD
WERE WORKING DANGEROUS JOBS LIKE
IN COAL MINES AND FACTORIES.
LEWIS HINE THOUGHT THAT IF
PEOPLE COULD SEE PICTURES OF
THIS, THEY'D DEMAND TO HAVE LAWS
AGAINST CHILD LABOUR. AND IT
WORKED! HIS PICTURES OF WORKING
KIDS HELPED CHANGE LAWS.
THANK YOU SO MUCH.
YOU'VE BEEN A HUGE HELP
IN SOLVING THIS MYSTERY.

Mike says MY PLEASURE.

(KYLA'S PHONE RINGS.)

Kyla says HEY, E.B.

E.B. says HEY, KYLA. OH... I GOT
A REALLY COOL PICTURE OF MYSELF.
I REALLY WANT TO SHARE IT WITH
ALL MY FRIENDS, BUT TO DO THAT
I'M GONNA HAVE TO TAKE A PICTURE
OF A PICTURE TO SEND IT ONLINE.

Kyla says HA! THAT'S TRUE. I WONDER IF
SHARING PICTURES HAS SOMETHING
TO DO WITH OUR MYSTERY.

E.B. says COULD BE.

Kyla says WELL, I SENT A MESSAGE
TO MAX, THE GUY WHO TOOK
ALL THE PICTURES ON THE CD, AND
HE DOES PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS,
SO HE'LL TOLD ME TO BRING
MY CAMERA AND TAG ALONG.

E.B. says COOL.
LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU GET.

Kyla says LATER.

Max takes the picture of a group of students in the park.

Max is in his sixties, with short white hair and a beard. He wears glasses, jeans, a blue jacket and a white hat.

Max says GO DOWN LOW
AND SHOOT ME UP. MMM...

Kyla says HI, GUYS!

The students say HI!

Kyla says MY NAME'S KYLA.

Max says I'M MAX. HOW ARE YOU?

Kyla says MAX. NICE TO MEET YOU.

A girl with curly brown hair says GABBY.

Kyla says GABBY.

An older girl with curly brown hair says ARISTA.

Kyla says ARISTA.

A blond boy with glasses says LEO.

Kyla says LEO.

A boy with straight brown hair says JADIAN.
JUST KIDDING. I MEAN...

Kyla says HA! NICE TO MEET YOU.

A boy with wavy brown hair says DANIEL.

Kyla says DANIEL? COOL. SO MY
GREAT AUNT HERMIONE PUT THIS IN
A FILE CALLED "CHANGING THE WAY
WE SEE." DO YOU MAYBE KNOW WHY
SHE HAD PUT IT IN THERE?

Max says SHE HAD PROBABLY ATTENDED
ONE OF MY WORKSHOPS, AND I USED
TO HAND OUT CDS WITH MY IMAGES.

Kyla says COOL.

Max says I'M GONNA BE STARTING
A WORKSHOP PRETTY SOON
WITH ALL OF THESE GUYS.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN IN?

Kyla says YEAH, SURE.

Max says YOUR CAMERAS HAVE
FANTASTIC ADJUSTMENTS. AND YOU
CAN ALL TAKE GREAT PICTURES.
IN FACT, I JUST GOT BACK FROM
ALGONQUIN PARK. I HAD MY... ALL
MY CAMERA EQUIPMENT IN MY CAR,
AND YOU KNOW WHAT I USED?

The students say WHAT?

Max says MY CELL PHONE.
(KYLA AND STUDENTS LAUGH.)

Kyla says YOU HAVE, LIKE, THE
BIGGEST LENS I'VE EVER SEEN.

Max says I SHOOT A LOT OF BIRDS
WITH IT. WHEN I SAY "SHOOT
A LOT OF BIRDS," I PHOTOGRAPH
A LOT OF BIRDS.
(STUDENTS LAUGH.)

Kyla says NOT SHOOT A LOT OF BIRDS.
(KYLA LAUGHS.)

Max says NO, NO. I DON'T SHOOT BIRDS.
I LOVE ALL BIRDS AND ANIMALS.
AND I CAN GET CLOSE TO THEM
WITH THIS CAMERA. I ALSO HAVE
A PHOTOGRAPHY WEBSITE, AND I'D
LIKE TO START A KIDS PHOTOGRAPHY
WEBSITE. BUT I'M LOOKING
FOR SOME SUBJECTS, SOME REALLY
GOOD SUBJECTS WITH KIDS.
DO YOU KNOW OF ANY?

The kids say ME! ME! I'M A GOOD SUBJECT.
HOW ABOUT RIGHT HERE? ME!

Gaby takes a picture of Jaidan and says SMILE. MY TURN.

Jaidan says OKAY.

Gaby says I REALLY LIKE SHARING
PHOTOS BECAUSE I REALLY LIKE TO
HEAR AND SEE THE REACTIONS TO,
LIKE, WHAT I'VE SHOWN THEM.
(KIDS LAUGH.)
THIS IS YOU LAUGHING.

Max says GUYS! GUYS! GUYS!
GOOD. GOOD, GOOD.

He takes pictures of some of the students.

Daniels says WELL, I LIKE
SHARING MY PHOTOGRAPHS
FOR MORE PEOPLE TO ENJOY.
NOT JUST ONE PERSON, RIGHT?

Arista says I MOSTLY SHARE WITH
MY RELATIVES AND REALLY CLOSE
FRIENDS TO SHOW THEM, YOU KNOW,
HOW A NICE TIME I'M HAVING,
SINCE MOST OF MY RELATIVES DON'T
LIVE IN CANADA. SO THEN I LIKE
TO SHOW THEM THAT I'M HAVING A
WONDERFUL TIME AND WISHING THAT
THEY COULD BE THERE WITH ME.

Kyla says SO YOU GUYS CAN
STAY CONNECTED.

Arista says YES.

(music plays)

Max says AND TELL HER TO SMILE.

Arista says SMILE.

Max says THERE WE GO. COME ON.

Arista takes pictures of Kyla.

Then Kyla takes pictures of Arista.

Kyla says DID YOU ALWAYS USE
THIS KIND OF CAMERA?

Max says NO. I STARTED OFF WITH
A BROWNIE HAWKEYE. THEN I WENT
TO A HASSELBLAD FILM CAMERA.

Kyla says OH.

Max says USED TO TAKE A LOT OF
TIME TO DEVELOP OUR BLACK AND
WHITES. WE HAD TO DEVELOP, DRY
THEM, PRINT THEM, MAKE CONTACT
SHEETS THEN DRY THE PAPER.
VERY, VERY TIME CONSUMING.

Kyla says HOW DID YOU SHARE
YOUR PICTURES WITH PEOPLE?

Max says WE USED TO MAKE UP
WEDDING ALBUMS, BAR MITZVAH
ALBUMS, ALL TYPES OF...
DIFFERENT TYPES OF ANNIVERSARY
ALBUMS, AND GIVE IT TO THEM AS
AN ALBUM. IT'S A LOT EASIER NOW,
BECAUSE I CAN PUT THEM ON
THE WEBSITE, GIVE THE PERSON A
PASSWORD, AND THEY LOOK AT THEIR
PICTURES, ALMOST WITHIN FIFTEEN
MINUTES AFTER I TAKE THEM.

Kyla says AND EVEN IF I DON'T HAVE
A FANCY CAMERA LIKE YOURS, I CAN
ALWAYS JUST WHIP OUT MY PHONE
AND TAKE PICS ON THE GO.

Max says ISN'T THAT GREAT?

Kyla says SELFIE!
SO WHEN HERMIONE WROTE "CHANGING
THE WAY WE SEE," COULD SHE HAVE
MEANT HOW MODERN DAY CAMERAS
CHANGED THE
WAY
WE SEE?
LIKE NOWADAYS WE CAN SEE
OUR PICS RIGHT AWAY, AND IT'S
A LOT FASTER THAN IT WAS BEFORE.

Mike says YES, KYLA. YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY
RIGHT. IT IS FASTER. BUT ONE OF
THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS FOR ME
IS SHARING MY PICTURES AND
SHOWING HOW THE WORLD ACTUALLY
CHANGES. I GO BACK TO THE SAME
PLACES, AND THEY'RE COMPLETELY
DIFFERENT. AND IN MANY CASES,
IN A NEGATIVE WAY.
WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SHOW YOU
IS LOADING UP. THERE ARE CERTAIN
BIRDS THAT ARE DISAPPEARING.
THEY'RE GRASSLAND BIRDS.
AND BECAUSE LESS AND LESS...
THE GRASSLANDS AROUND ONTARIO
ARE DISAPPEARING, BECAUSE
OF DEVELOPMENT, THEY'RE
DISAPPEARING BECAUSE OF
FARMLAND. AND THE BIRDS THERE
ARE DISAPPEARING. THEY HAVE
NOWHERE TO GO. IT'S KIND OF SAD.

Arista says THAT'S REALLY SAD.

Max says YEAH. YEAH.

Arista says LIKE, ALL THEY WANT
TO DO IS LIVE, BUT THERE'S
NO PLACE FOR THEM TO GO.

Gaby says YEAH, I AGREE.
IT'S HEARTBREAKING.

Arista says IT'S BETTER TO, YOU
KNOW, SHOW PEOPLE. TAKE PHOTOS
FIRST OF ANIMALS, BIRDS, REALLY
ANYTHING YOU CAN FIND THAT'S,
YOU KNOW, GOING ENDANGERED,
AND SHOW PEOPLE THAT
IT'S A BIG DEAL AND THAT
IT'S HAPPENING SOMEWHERE AND
IT SHOULD BE OUR MAIN CONCERN.

Daniel says YOU WANT YOUR KIDS
TO SEE WHAT WAS THERE BEFORE
AND WHAT HAPPENED TO IT,
SO THEY CAN HAVE... YOU CAN HAVE
A MEMORY OF WHAT HAPPENED
AND HOW BEAUTIFUL IT WAS.

Max says OKAY, GUYS. WE'RE READY
TO DO SOME NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY,
AND I SEE SOME WILD DUCKS THERE.
WHAT DO YOU SAY WE GO OVER THERE
AND PHOTOGRAPH THEM?

The students say YEAH!

Max says LET'S GO.
(DUCKS QUACKING.)

The kids start taking pictures.

Kyla says THANKS, MAX. YOU WERE
REALLY HELPFUL. AND THANKS GUYS!

The students say BYE!

Kyla says I THINK I GOT A PRETTY
GOOD IDEA ON THIS MYSTERY.

(KYLA'S PHONE RINGS.)

Kyla says SORRY. HEY, E.B. I THINK
I SOLVED THE MYSTERY.

E.B. says OKAY, BUT HANG ON.
I FOUND THIS AMAZING PICTURE.
I JUST POSTED IT, AND IT ALREADY
GOT 45 LIKES. CHECK IT OUT.
IT'S A PICTURE OF EARTH TAKEN BY
ASTRONAUTS ALMOST 50 YEARS AGO!
IT'S ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS
PICTURES OF ALL TIME, AND IT WAS
SHARED ALL OVER THE WORLD.
IT BECAME A SYMBOL OF PROTECTING
THE ENVIRONMENT BECAUSE IT
REMINDS US EARTH IS FRAGILE
AND WE HAVE TO PROTECT IT.

Kyla says WOW. THAT REALLY IS
AN AMAZING PICTURE.
AND I THINK IT HELPED
SOLVE OUR MYSTERY TOO.
SEE YOU BACK AT THE HOUSE.

E.B. says ALL RIGHT, SEE YOU SOON.

In the basement, E.B. says OH. HEY, KYLA.
THIS CAME FOR YOU.

Kyla says OH.
WOAH!

E.B. says WHAT? THAT LOOKS JUST LIKE
YOU. I LOVE THE WAY THE HAIR...

Kyla says YES. SHE DID IT PERFECTLY.

E.B. says THAT'S SO REALISTIC.

Kyla says YOU KNOW, IT USED TO BE
THE ONLY WAY PEOPLE COULD
SEE PICTURES OF THEMSELVES
OR THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS WAS
TO HAVE THEIR PORTRAIT PAINTED.

E.B. says THEN THE DAGUERREOTYPE
WAS THE FIRST TIME PEOPLE COULD
SEE THEMSELVES THE WAY
THEY LOOKED IN REAL LIFE.
THAT WAS A HUGE CHANGE.
WHEN TECHNOLOGY ADVANCED, PEOPLE
COULD TAKE THEIR CAMERAS ALL
OVER THE PLACE. SOME PEOPLE USED
THEIR PHOTOS TO SHOW EVERYONE
SOME PRETTY BAD THINGS THAT
WERE GOING ON IN THE WORLD.
THEY EVEN HELPED CHANGE LAWS.

Kyla says THE PHOTOS ON THE DVD
WERE CONFUSING AT FIRST, BUT
MAX HELPED ME FIGURE OUT THAT,
WHEN WE SHARE PHOTOS OF NATURE
WITH PEOPLE, IT REMINDS US
THAT WE NEED TO PROTECT ANIMALS
AND THE PLACES THEY LIVE.

E.B. says YEAH. JUST LIKE HOW
THAT PHOTO OF EARTH REMINDED
PEOPLE TO PROTECT THE PLANET.
I SEE WHERE THIS IS GOING.

Kyla says WHAT HERMIONE MEANT IS
THAT TAKING AND SHARING PICTURES
IS CHANGING THE WAY WE SEE
THE WORLD AND OURSELVES.

E.B. says YEAH. MYSTERY SOLVED.

Kyla says AND CHECK OUT
ALL THE COOL PICTURES
WE TOOK AT THE PARK TODAY.
(DUCKS QUACKING.)

E.B. says OH, NICE. OH.
LOTS OF DUCKS. MORE DUCKS.
(E.B. LAUGHS.)
(KYLA LAUGHS.)

E.B. says HEY! WHAT ARE THOSE
PICTURES DOING HERE?

Funny pictures of animals appear.

E.B. says UH... I WAS JUST PASSING
THE TIME. YOU KNOW? I CAN HAVE
SOME... IMPORTANT PICTURES.

Kyla says I GUESS SOME PICTURES
