(LIVELY ELECTRONIC MUSIC)

In animation, two aliens fly across space in a spaceship.

Blynk is a rectangular green alien with spiky hair and long fangs.

Aazoo is a round orange alien with 3 eyes.

With the help of M.A.V.I.S., the spaceship computer, and real Earth scientists, they listen to real Earth children's questions and try to find answers.

A song plays that says BLYNK AND AAZOO
I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU

The name of the show reads "Blynk and Aazoo. Imagine, investigate, invent!"

(LIVELY ELECTRONIC MUSIC)

(IMITATING CAR ENGINE)

Blynk and Aazoo play a car race videogame.

(SIGHING)
(ALARM)

M.A.V.I.S. says INQUIRY BOOTH TRANSMITTING,
INCOMING INQUIRY.
(LAUGHING)

A real life girl named Serena pops up on a screen and says HI BLYNK AND AAZOO!
IT'S ME, SERENA!
I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU.

Serena is around 11, with long straight brown hair and wears a coral T-shirt.

The aliens wave at her.

(GREETING SERENA)
(ALIEN BABBLE)

Aazoo squeaks as he can barely see Serena.

Serena says DON'T WORRY, AAZOO,
I JUST HAD THE LIGHTS OFF.
I WAS TRYING TO SEE IN THE DARK.
(ALIEN BABBLE)

M.A.V.I.S. says I, TOO, CAN SEE THAT SERENA HAS
A QUESTION.

Serena says AS SOON AS I TURN OFF MY LIGHTS
TO GO TO SLEEP,
MY CAT SHADOW WANTS TO PLAY.

The aliens say OH!

Serena says BUT WHEN IT'S DARK,
I CAN'T SEE HER
EVEN THOUGH SHE CAN SEE ME.
IS THERE A WAY I CAN SEE
IN THE DARK?
(ALIEN BABBLE)

Aazoo pulls out a picture of a kitty.

M.A.V.I.S. says YOU TWO GETTING A CAT?
SOUNDS LIKE A CATASTROPHE!
GET IT?
CAT-ASTROPHE?
(GROANS)
(ALIEN BABBLE)

Blynk presses the question button.

M.A.V.I.S. says CALLING INTERSTELLAR SCIENCE
COUNCIL, CAPTAIN.

A real life scientist pops up on another screen and says WELL HELLO, BLYNK AND AAZOO!
HOW CAN I HELP YOU TODAY?

Serena says HI!
I'M SERENA, AND I'M WONDERING
HOW CAN I SEE IN THE DARK LIKE
MY CAT?

Simon says HI SERENA, I'M SIMON.
SEEING IN THE DARK WOULD
BE AMAZING!
BLYNK, PULL UP THE HUMAN
FILES PLEASE.

Simon is in his thirties, with short straight brown hair and wears glasses and a burgundy shirt.

Serena says SUB-CATEGORY: LIGHTS ON,
LIGHTS OFF.
OKAY, SO LIGHT ENTERS THE EYE
THROUGH THE PUPIL.
THAT'S THE BLACK OPENING AT THE
CENTER OF THE EYE, SERENA.

M.A.V.I.S. says AFFIRMATIVE.
THE PUPIL DIRECTS THE LIGHT
ONTO THE RETINA
AT THE VERY BACK OF THE EYE.
HERE, MILLIONS OF SPECIAL CELLS
CHANGE THE LIGHT
INTO SIGNALS SO THE BRAIN
CAN UNDERSTAND
WHAT THE EYE IS SEEING.
THESE SPECIAL CELLS ARE CALLED
RODS AND CONES
BECAUSE OF THEIR SHAPE.

Serena says INTERESTING!
SO WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
RODS AND CONES?

M.A.V.I.S. says RODS ALLOW YOU TO SEE IN
DIM LIGHT,
BUT THEY DO NOT PICK UP COLOR.
CONES ALLOW YOU TO SEE COLOR,
BUT DO NOT WORK IN DIM LIGHT.

Serena says SO, IF SHADOW CAN SEE BETTER
IN THE DARK,
DOES THAT MEAN SHE HAS MORE
RODS THAN I DO?

Simon says EXACTLY SERENA!
BUT RODS ARE ONLY PART OF
THE STORY.
BLYNK, THE NOCTURNAL ANIMAL
FILES PLEASE!
NOCTURNAL ANIMALS ARE ANIMALS
THAT STAY AWAKE
AT NIGHT, JUST LIKE CATS.
BESIDES HAVING MORE RODS
THAN US,
THEIR PUPILS CAN OPEN MUCH
WIDER THAN OURS.
THIS MEANS THEIR EYES LET IN
MORE LIGHT EVEN IN THE DARK.
(OWL HOOTING)

M.A.V.I.S. says NOCTURNAL HUNTERS LIKE OWLS
AND CATS
HAVE PUPILS THAT, WHEN OPEN
WIDE,
ALMOST COVER THE FRONT OF
THEIR EYE.
SO DO TREE FROGS,
WHICH HAVE TO JUMP FROM
BRANCH TO BRANCH DURING
THE NIGHT.

Simon says ANOTHER REASON NOCTURNAL
ANIMALS
ARE SO GOOD AT SEEING
IN THE DARK
IS BECAUSE THEY HAVE A
MIRROR-LIKE LAYER BEHIND THEIR
RETINA CALLED THE TAPETUM
LUCIDUM.

Serena says TA-PE-TUM LUCIDUM?

M.A.V.I.S. says CORRECT!
LIGHT THAT PASSES THROUGH
THE RETINA
IS REFLECTED OFF THE TAPETUM.
AND THEN BACK THROUGH THE
RETINA AGAIN.
BECAUSE THE LIGHT IS HITTING THE
RETINA A SECOND TIME,
THINGS LOOK BRIGHTER AT NIGHT
FOR THESE CREATURES
THAN THEY DO FOR HUMANS.

Simon says THAT REFLECTIVE LIGHT CAN
ALSO MAKE
AN ANIMALS EYE SHINE AT NIGHT
IN A VERY SPOOKY WAY.

A clip shows Serena's cat in the dark.

Serena says SHADOW'S EYES CAN SHINE
LIKE THAT,
SO SHE MUST HAVE TAPETUM
LUCIDUM.

Simon says THEY SURE DO!

Serena says COOL!

Simon says THERE'S ANOTHER REASON SOME
NOCTURNAL ANIMALS
CAN SEE SO WELL IN THE DARK.
IT HAS TO DO WITH THE SIZE
OF THEIR EYES.

M.A.V.I.S. says TARSIERS,
BUSH BABIES, AND OWLS
HAVE SOME OF THE LARGEST EYES
RELATIVE TO THEIR BODY'S SIZE.
ONE REASON THEY CAN SEE SO
WELL IN THE DARK,
IS THAT EACH EYE IS AS BIG
AS THEIR BRAIN.

Serena says WOW, THOSE ARE SOME BIG EYES!
(EXCLAIMS)

Aazoo starts measuring its three eye and gets tangled with the measuring tape.

M.A.V.I.S. says AAZOO'S RESEARCH HAS CLEARLY
LEFT THEM,
IN THE DARK.

Serena says HEY, HOW BIG ARE BATS EYES?
I'VE SEEN CAVES BEFORE AND
THEY'RE PITCH BLACK IN THERE.
HOW CAN THEY SEE?

Simon says VERY GOOD QUESTION, SERENA.
WHEN THERE'S NO LIGHTS, THE BEST
WAY FOR AN ANIMAL TO SEE
IS TO USE ECHOLOCATION.

Serena says ECHOLO... IS THAT WITH ECHOS?
(EXCLAIMS)

Serena says I'VE YELLED OUT AND HEARD MY
ECHO BEFORE.

Simon says YOU'RE ON THE RIGHT TRACK!
SOME ANIMALS LIKE BATS,
DOLPHINS, AND WHALES
ACTUALLY USE SOUND IN ORDER
TO SEE.
THEY SEND CALLS OUT INTO
THE ENVIRONMENT
AND THEN LISTEN TO THE ECHOS
THAT RETURN
FROM THE OBJECTS AROUND THEM.
THE SOUND HELPS THEM SEE,
OR LOCATE, WHERE THINGS ARE.

M.A.V.I.S. says THESE ANIMALS USE ECHOLOCATION
TO NAVIGATE AND FIND PREY,
AND ALSO TO LOCATE THEIR
FAMILIES IN THE DARK.

Serena says WOW, THERE'S SO MANY WAYS
ANIMALS CAN SEE IN THE DARK.

Simon says YOU'RE RIGHT!
AND SCIENTISTS ARE WORKING
ON SOME NEW
AND EXCITING INVENTIONS
FOR HUMANS!
BLYNK, THE FUTURE FILES PLEASE!

Blynk plays the files.

Simon says IN ORDER TO SEE IN THE DARK,
HUMANS CURRENTLY HAVE TO RELY
ON BIG, BULKY NIGHT VISION
GOGGLES.
BUT MAYBE NOT FOR LONG.
SCIENTISTS ARE NOW WORKING
ON SPECIAL, SMART
CONTACT LENSES THAT WILL LET
YOU SEE IN THE DARK.

M.A.V.I.S. says AFFIRMATIVE.
SCIENTISTS HAVE DISCOVERED
A WAY TO MAKE
THE BULKY TECHNOLOGY NEEDED
FOR SEEING IN THE DARK
SMALL ENOUGH TO FIT ON AN EYE.

Simon says AND THAT'S NOT ALL.
WITH THE MINIATURIZATION
OF TECHNOLOGY,
ONE DAY WITH THE BLINK
OF AN EYE,
LENSES COULD BE USED TO
AUGMENT REALITY,
RECORD AND PLAY BACK VIDEO,
OR REPORT ON THE WEARER'S HEALTH
BY ANALYZING TEARS.
PRETTY COOL RIGHT?

Serena says WOW, YOU KNOW WHAT?
IF I HAVE THOSE LENSES,
I COULD SEE SHADOW IN THE DARK
AND WATCH VIDEOS AT
THE SAME TIME.

Blynk says YEAH-HAH.

M.A.V.I.S. says INSPIRATION DETECTED.
INVENTION STATION IS READY,
CAPTAIN.
(EXCITING MUSIC)

Blynk goes in the invention room and creates contact lenses for Aazoo's 3 eyes.

Aazoo says OOH.
(EXCLAIMS)
(ALIEN BABBLE)

M.A.V.I.S. says DISPLAYING CONTACT LENS VIDEO
CHANNEL
AND HEALTH MONITOR.

A health monitor and a video of a cat playing keyboards display.

Serena says AWW, SO CUTE!

Blynk says AWW.

Serena says BUT WHAT'S THE THIRD EYE DO,
AAZOO?
TRY BLINKING.

An image of Blynk with a doggy app filter appears.

Simon says OH FUN!
SOME AUGMENTED REALITY FILTERS.
(LAUGHING)

Simon says BLYNK, GREAT SCIENTISTS OFTEN
FIND THEIR INVENTIONS
HAVE UNEXPECTED RESULTS.
THAT'S THE FUN OF INVENTING!

Blynk gets mad.

Serena says MAYBE WHEN I GROW UP,
I CAN BECOME ONE OF THOSE
SCIENTISTS
DOING COOL THINGS WITH THE SMART
CONTACT LENSES!

Simon says FOR SURE!

M.A.V.I.S. says I CAN SEE THAT.
GET IT?
SEE?
HA HA.

Now Blynk appears with a cat filter.

Serena laughs and says BLYNK NOW LOOKS
LIKE SHADOW.

Blynk says MEOW.
(ALL LAUGHING)

M.A.V.I.S. says THE SEARCH FOR INVENTIONS
CONTINUES,
ALL SYSTEMS ENGAGED.

Producer, Jeannette Lookman.
