In animation, pictures of several different kids appear hanging on laundry lines. A raven on the lines flies off to the sun and opens his wings as the title of the show appears. It reads "Raven's Quest."
Kikpesan says KWAII. HELLO.
MY NAME IS KIKPESAN.
I JUST TURNED 13.
I'M MI'KMAQ AND I LIVE IN
ESGENOOPETIJ NEW BRUNSWICK.
OUT THERE IS MIRAMICHI BAY AND
IT IS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE.
MY ANCESTORS LIVED HERE TOO.
THEY FISHED ON THE WATER AND
THEY HUNTED ALL AROUND HERE.
ARCHERY WAS A GREAT WAY TO HUNT.
THIS ONE WAS DECENT.
I LIKE ARCHERY BECAUSE IT
MAKES ME FEEL LIKE I'M PART OF
SOMETHING.
LIKE IN THE COMMUNITY.
IT'S BECAUSE OF ALL THE
TRADITIONS LIKE WE USE TO USE
BOWS ALL THE TIME TO
HUNT FOR FOOD, FOR MOOSE.
I GOT STARTED WITH
ARCHERY AROUND 4 YEARS AGO.
USUALLY WHEN YOU START PEOPLE
TEND TO MISS THE TARGET MOSTLY
AND WHEN I PICKED UP THE BOW, MY
COACH AND MY PARENTS SAID THAT I
WAS A COMPLETE NATURAL.
THE FIRST COMPETITION THAT I
EVER DID I WAS 9 YEARS OLD.
IF I WERE TO STOP ARCHERY I FEEL
LIKE, IN MY SOUL, THERE WOULD BE
SOMETHING MISSING OF ME LIKE A
PIECE OF A PUZZLE NOT THERE.
IT'S A NICE ONE.
WELCOME TO MY ROOM.
THIS IS WHERE I SLEEP AND I LIKE
HAVING PICTURES OF MY FAMILY ON
THE WALL.
I AM SUPER INTO SPORTS.
I LIKE COMPETING IN SPORTS
BECAUSE I LIKE THE ADRENALINE
AND I LIKE THE RUSH.
IT JUST FEELS GREAT.
A clip shows her rowing on the river and saying DIG. DIG. DIG.
Kikpesan says THESE ARE ALL OF MY GOLD MEDALS
FROM THE INDIGENOUS GAMES.
THIS ONE RIGHT HERE IS FOR
PLAYING 6 OR MORE SPORTS IN THE
SUMMER GAMES.
I GOT THAT FOR
PLAYING 6 OR MORE SPORTS.
THESE ONES ARE FROM AN OPEN CUP
THAT'S A VERY VERY COMPETITIVE
TYPE OF SWIMMING.
I HAVE BEEN PLAYING HOCKEY EVER
SINCE I WAS 3 AND KNEW HOW TO
SKATE.
THE POSITION I
PLAY IS LEFT WING.
THIS IS BEST IN LITERACY.
TOP MATH STUDENT.
TOP OVERALL STUDENT.
MY WEEKLY ROUTINE IS I HAVE 3
SWIMMINGS A WEEK, 2 ARCHERIES, 1
VOLLEYBALL AND 3 CROSSFITS A
WEEK AND I HAVE TO SQUEEZE IT
ALL IN.
I LOVE ANIMALS.
ANY SHAPE OR FORM
EXCEPT REPTILES.
I DON'T LIKE REPTILES.
She opens a chicken coop and says HELLO.
IS ANYBODY OUT THERE?
SO I WENT UP TO MY DAD AND
I SAID CAN I GET CHICKENS?
AND HE SAID MAYBE.
AND A MONTH OR TWO LATER WHEN
I COME HOME THERE'S CHICKENS
EVERYWHERE AND I LOVE CHICKENS
BECAUSE THEY ARE AWESOME.
THAT'S WASTOH.
HERE IS WHITE LIGHTENING.
THIS IS HOW YOU SAY CHICKEN.
IN MI'KMAQ.
GO'QOLI''GWAJ.
GO'QOLI''GWAJ.
CHICKEN.
HERE, IN MY LITTLE TINY COOP,
WE GET FRESH EGGS EVERYDAY.
CHECK OUT ALL THESE COOL EGGS.
THEY'RE ALL NATURAL AND WE
SELL THEM ALL AROUND THE
NEIGHBOURHOOD.
NOW IT'S TIME FOR ME TO
MAKE MY EGG DELIVERY.
THIS IS MY FRIEND HARMONY.
Harmony is in her early teens, with short wavy black hair and wears a tie-die hooded sweatshirt.
She says HELLO.
Kikpesan says AND WE LIKE TO
PLAY HIDE AND SEEK.
They say ROCK.
PAPER.
SCISSORS.
SHOOT.
Harmony's scissors cut Kikpesan's paper and she says TAP.
Kikpesan counts and says 18.
19.
20.
READY OR NOT HERE I COME.
FOUND YOU.
I SAW YOU RUNNING AROUND THERE.
WE LIKE TO COLLECT THINGS ON THE
SHORE AND ONE TIME I FOUND THIS.
A VERY SPECIAL TOTEM POLE AND
WE THINK THAT IT'S MADE OUT OF
WHALE BONE.
THIS IS WHAT WE LIKE TO CALL
BEACH GLASS AND IT'S BEEN IN THE
WATER FOR LIKE A VERY LONG TIME
SO IT DOESN'T CUT YOU ANYMORE.
I'VE KNOWN HARMONY EVER SINCE
I'VE STARTED SCHOOL IN JUNIOR
KINDERGARTEN.
HARMONY IS FUNNY AND
SHE CAN BE AWESOME.
NOW WE'RE AT MY SCHOOL GYM
WHERE WE PRACTICE ARCHERY.
I NEED TO PUT THE BOW
TOGETHER EVERY TIME.
THE RECURVE BOW LOOKS A LOT LIKE
THE ONE THAT WE USED BACK IN THE
DAY BUT IT HAS A LOT MORE POWER.
THIS IS A REALLY HIGH TECH BOW.
THE COMPOUND BOW IS MUCH MUCH
STRONGER THAN THE RECURVE BOW.
IT HAS SO MANY THINGS
THAT YOU CAN ADJUST.
Her coach says TAKE YOUR TIME.
YOU'RE GOING... .YOU'RE
GOING A BIT FAST.
Kikpesan says BOBBY HAS TAUGHT
ME A LOT OF THINGS.
HE'S FUNNY.
HE'S FAIR AND HE'S
TOUGH ALL AT THE SAME TIME.
Bobby says THERE YOU GO.
SEE?
Kikpesan says HE'S BEEN COACHING ME FOR 4
YEARS AND I'VE GOT A LOT OF
MEDALS BECAUSE OF HIM.
THE BULLSEYE IS WORTH
11 POINTS RIGHT THERE.
IT'S NOT ENOUGH TO JUST
YELL SO I HAVE TO PRACTICE.
IF I COULD ONLY SCRAPE IT INTO
THE RED I WOULD HAVE BEAT YOU.
THAT'S GOOD.
At the docks, Kikpesan says IT'S 4 IN THE MORNING.
HERE'S OUR LOBSTER BOAT AND
WE'RE ABOUT TO GO GET OUR DAILY
CATCH.
OUR FAMILY LIVES OFF OF
THE BAY FISHING FOR LOBSTER.
WE SELL THE CATCH
AND KEEP SOME TOO.
WE START VERY EARLY
BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT TO DO.
EVERYBODY'S GOT A
JOB ON THE BOAT.
IT'S MY JOB TO
MEASURE THE LOBSTERS.
I MEASURE BETWEEN ITS
EYES AND ITS SPINE.
IF IT'S UNDER SIZE
WE THROW IT BACK.
IF IT'S CANNER WE PUT IT IN A
SEPARATE BOX, AND IF IT'S MARKET
WE PUT IT IN A BIGGER BOX.
THIS IS A MARKET BECAUSE
IT'S BIGGER THAN THIS MEASURE.
I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THE
LOBSTER BOAT FOR AS LONG AS I
CAN REMEMBER.
MOST OF THE TIME I TRY
TO HELP OUT ON WEEKENDS.
I GOT THAT ONE.
Dad says LET'S HEAD TO OUR
FIRST BUOY OVER THERE.
Kikpesan says WE'RE HEADING BACK TO
SHORE WITH OUR CATCH.
CAPTAIN KIKPESAN.
NOW WE DROP OFF
LOBSTERS AT THE DOCK.
TODAY WAS A GOOD DAY AND WE
ALMOST CAUGHT 600 POUNDS OF
LOBSTER.
Now in her backyard, Kikpesan says THIS IS A SWEAT LODGE.
WE DO SPECIAL
CEREMONIES IN HERE.
THESE SPECIAL ROCKS
ARE CALLED GRANDFATHERS.
WE HEAT THEM UP IN THE SACRED
FIRE AND THAT SORT OF ACTIVATES
THEM AND EACH
GRANDFATHER HOLDS A SPIRIT.
I AM WEARING A SKIRT TO SHOW
RESPECT FOR THE GRANDFATHERS AND
THE SWEAT LODGE AND
FOR OUR TRADITION.
Inside the lodge, Kikpesan says NORMALLY CAMERAS SHOULD NOT
BE ALLOWED IN HERE BUT SINCE
THERE'S NOTHING
GOING ON THEY ARE.
THIS IS WHERE WE PUT THE ROCKS
TO MAKE STEAM AND THAT MAKES IT
REALLY REALLY HOT.
WE START DRUMMING AND SINGING
OUR SACRED SONGS THAT HELP US
WITH HEALING AND WE PRAY.
UP' NMU'LTES.
SEE YOU LATER.
IT WAS FUN HANGING OUT
