In animation, a sign with the name of the show falls in the water.
The name of the show reads "Leo's Fish Heads."
A clip shows a group of friends fishing.
Leo, an animated fish says WE ARE THE FISHHEADS
EXPLORER CLUB,
SAYAT, CHRISTIAN,
AND ME, LEO.
Sayat is around 12. She has long curly brown hair in a high ponytail and wears a pink sweater, a neon green life jacket, gloves, and a cream cap hat.
Christian is around 12, with short straight light brown hair and wears an orange jacket, a blue life jacket, and rubber gloves.
Leo says TOGETHER, WE'RE GETTING WET
AND MUCKY
WORKING WITH EXPERTS AND
HELPING OUR AQUATIC FRIENDS.
A caption reads "TVO Kids presents: Fish Heads explorer club."
Leo says EACH DAY WE'RE ON A NEW MISSION
EXPLORING WHAT'S GOING ON
ALONG THE SHORELINES
AND UNDER THE WAVES.
SPLISH, SPLASH, GRAB YOUR BOOTS
AND YOU CAN BE A FISHHEAD TOO.
(WATER BURBLES)
Leo says AHH! OH, (CHUCKLE)
SILLY ME,
JUST A SHADOW.
EVERYONE KNOWS GARLIC KEEPS
VAMPIRES AWAY
AND THAT'S WHAT SEA LAMPREY
ARE IN MY BOOK.
VAMPIRES!
SO, WITH THEIR EXCELLENT SENSE
OF SMELL,
I'M SURE THIS LOVELY STRING
OF GARLIC
WILL MAKE SURE NO SEA LAMPREY
WILL DROP BY
THE EXPLORER CLUB HEADQUARTERS.
The fishfinder shows an image of a sea lamprey.
Leo says AH!
THE SEA LAMPREY IS AT THE TOP
OF OUR FISH FINDER LIST TODAY.
SEA LAMPREY ARE BLOODSUCKERS,
REAL LIFE VAMPIRES.
IN ORDER TO LIVE,
THEY NEED THE BLOOD
OF ANOTHER FISH. EW!
THE FISHHEADS ARE MEETING UP
WITH GALE
FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF
FISHERIES AND OCEANS,
AND TED FROM THE GREAT LAKES
FISHERY COMMISSION
TO HELP PUT A STOP TO THESE
BLOODSUCKING BULLIES.
By the river, the kids put their lifejackets on and grab their equipment from the back of a pick-up truck.
Christian says WE'VE MET LOTS OF DIFFERENT
FISH OVER OUR TIME
AND THEY'VE ALL BEEN AMAZING.
BUT I THINK THE SEA LAMPREY
ARE A BIT SCARY.
Sayat says THEY ARE KINDA LIKE VAMPIRES
SO I CAN'T ARGUE WITH YOU.
ALL CREATURES HAVE SOME
INTERESTING QUALITIES
AND I'M REALLY GLAD
WE GET TO HELP LEO
AND THE REST OF OUR FISH
FRIENDS SLEEP
A LITTLE EASIER TONIGHT.
Christian says TRUE, THEY MAY BE A BIT SCARY
BUT WHEN ELSE WOULD WE BE ABLE
TO SEE A VAMPIRE UP CLOSE.
Sayat goes back for a net and says YEAH.
OH WAIT.
Leo says SAFETY CHECK!
NEVER GO NEAR RIVERS
AND STREAMS
IN THE SPRING WITHOUT AN ADULT.
DURING THE SPRING MONTHS,
THE WATER IS MOVING EXTRA FAST
AND IS EXTRA HIGH,
IT'S SUPER EASY TO SLIP ON
THE BANK
AND GET CAUGHT IN THE RUSHING
WATER,
WHICH IS JUST ONE MORE
REASON WHY
FISHHEADS ALWAYS WEAR THEIR
PFD'S
WHEN THEY ARE NEAR THE WATER.
Ted says SO YOU GUYS READY TO JOIN
THE SEA LAMPREY CONTROL UNIT?
Ted is in his late thirties, with short brown hair and a ebard. He wears glasses, a black jacket and a white cap.
Christian says WE FISHHEADS ARE ALWAYS
READY.
A caption reads "Gale Bravener. Department of fisheries and oceans biologist."
Ted is in his late thirties, bald and clean-shaven and wears a red and gray jacket and a gray cap.
Gale says AWESOME, WE HAVE A LOT OF
TRAPS AROUND THE GREAT LAKES
AND WE HAVE TWO TRAPS ON THIS
RIVER TO CHECK TODAY.
Sayat says DO YOU ALWAYS SET TRAPS
FOR SEA LAMPREY?
Gale says WE ONLY SET TRAPS
IN THE SPRING
BECAUSE THAT'S WHEN THE SEA
LAMPREY ARE MIGRATING UPSTREAM
FROM THE LAKE TO THE RIVERS
TO SPAWN AND LAY THEIR EGGS.
Christian says SO ARE THEY LIKE THE
SALMON WHO GO BACK TO THE RIVER
WHERE THEY WERE BORN
TO LAY THEIR EGGS?
The caption changes to "Ted Lawrence. Great Lakes fishery commission scientist."
Ted says THEY'RE SIMILAR.
SEA LAMPREY AND SALMON
BOTH SWIM UP STREAMS
TO LAY THEIR EGGS,
OR WHAT WE CALL SPAWNING.
SALMON HOWEVER USES
A HOMING BEACON.
THEY RETURN TO THE SAME STREAM
THAT THEY WERE SPAWNED IN
AND THAT THEY HATCHED OUT OF.
The caption changes to "Spawn means laying eggs for babies."
Ted says SEA LAMPREYS HOWEVER,
THEY USE THEIR SENSE OF SMELL
TO FIND SUITABLE STREAMS
TO SPAWN IN.
SO YOU GUYS READY TO GO CHECK
THIS TRAP?
Sayat and Christian say YEAH.
Ted says ALRIGHT, LET'S GO.
Sayat and Christian help take the trap out of the water.
Christian says HERE.
Sayat says WOW! THAT'S A LOT.
Christian says WHOA!
Ted says IT LOOKS LIKE WE HAVE MORE
THAN JUST SEA LAMPREY
IN HERE TODAY, GUYS.
Sayat says IT MUST BE PRETTY SCARY
FOR THE FISH
TO BE IN WITH ALL THESE SEA
LAMPREY.
Ted says INTERESTINGLY, THEY SHUT DOWN
THEIR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
WHEN THEY'RE SPAWNING.
THEY PUT ALL OF THEIR ENERGY
INTO JUST LAYING EGGS.
SO ANY FISH, OR ANY OTHER
ORGANISMS THAT ARE IN HERE,
REALLY AREN'T IN DANGER BECAUSE
SEA LAMPREYS ARE FOCUSED
ON ONE THINGS, AND THAT'S GOING
UPSTREAM AND SPAWNING.
Sayat says THAT'S CRAZY.
Ted says YEAH,
IT'S AMAZING HOW NATURE FOCUSES
PRIMARILY ON SURVIVAL
AND HAVING MORE YOUNG.
SO YOU GUYS READY TO TAKE THESE
OUT AND GO SORT 'EM?
Sayat says YEAH.
Christian says SURE.
Ted says RIGHT WHERE I AM,
THERE YOU GO,
NOW YOU HAVE A SEA LAMPREY
IN YOUR HAND. TURN IT OVER.
Sayat says IT HAS ONE EYE?
Ted says IT HAS TWO EYES ON EACH SIDE.
Sayat says OH I DIDN'T SEE THAT.
Ted says BUT NOW LOOK AT THAT MOUTH,
IT HAS THE OUTER SUCTION CUP
WHICH HAS 60 POUNDS OF SUCTION
PER SQUARE INCH
WHICH IS 10 TIMES STRONGER
THAN A VACUUM CLEANER.
AND THEN THE SECOND COMPONENT
ARE ALL THOSE SHARP BARBED
TEETH THAT YOU SEE IN THERE.
AND ALL THOSE SHARP BARBED
TEETH AUTOMATICALLY GO
INTO THE SIDE OF THE SKIN
OF THE FISH,
SO FISH CANNOT GET
A SEA LAMPREY OFF OF IT.
Sayat says LOOK AT THE GILLS.
Ted says THERE'S SEVEN ON EACH SIDE.
Sayat says ONE, TWO, THREE,
FOUR, FIVE, SIX.
Ted says SO THIS IS A FISH.
Sayat says YEAH, IT HAS SEVEN OF 'EM.
Ted says YEAH.
IF YOU WANT TO.
Christian giggles as the fish sucks his hand.
(LAUGHING)
Gale says YOU WANT IT OFF?
WANNA TAKE IT OFF?
T says YOU READY?
Christian says OH YES, YES, YEAH, YEAH,
YEAH, OH, OH!
Sayat says WHAT DID IT FEEL LIKE?
Christian says OH MY GOD,
IT'S LIKE A SUCTION
AND TICKLED A BIT,
BUT THEN IT, AFTER A BIT IT
STARTED HURTING, AND...
Ted says ARE YOU READY TO TRY?
Sayat laughs as ted puts the fish on her hand.
The caption changes to "Fish talk with Leo."
Leo says THE SEA LAMPREY MAY SEEM LIKE
BIG BLOODSUCKING VAMPIRE
BULLIES,
BUT THEY DIDN'T START OUT
THAT WAY.
WHEN THEY HATCH OUT OF THEIR
EGGS THEY ARE KNOWN AS LARVAE.
THEY BURY THEMSELVES
IN THE BOTTOM OF THE RIVER
WITH JUST THEIR MOUTHS
POKING OUT
AND THEY STAY LIKE THAT
FOR A REALLY LONG TIME,
FIVE YEARS.
THAT'S ALL THEY ARE,
JUST WIGGLY LITTLE BODIES
AND A MOUTH,
THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE EYES.
HA, NOT SUCH A TOUGH GUY NOW,
ARE YOU?
BUT THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY
DEVELOP EYES,
AND START TO GROW,
AND THEN THEY NEED BLOOD
IN ORDER TO SURVIVE.
SO THEY HEAD OUT INTO THE LAKE
AND THEY FIND FISH TO FEED ON.
(WEAK CHUCKLE)
AND THAT'S THE MOMENT THESE
WIGGLY NO EYES,
BOTTOM FEEDERS BECOME VAMPIRES.
MUAH, HA, HA, HA, HA.
Sayat says THESE GUYS FEEL DIFFERENT
FROM OTHER FISH, HOW COME?
Gale says COMPARED TO OTHER FISH,
THESE ARE LONG AND SKINNY,
THEY HAVE A LOT OF MUSCLE,
NOT MUCH FAT,
AND THEY DON'T HAVE ANY SCALES
EITHER.
Sayat says DO THEY FISH FEEL LAMPREY
ON THEM?
Ted says WE CAN'T TELL
IF THE FISH FEELS PAIN,
BUT WE'VE SEEN FISH JUMPING
WITH THE SEA LAMPREY ON THEM,
PROBABLY TRYING
TO SHAKE 'EM OFF.
Sayat says YIKES, NEXT TIME WE GO
IN THE WATERS
I'M GONNA WEAR LAMPREY
REPELLANT.
Ted says WELL, YOU DON'T NEED TO
BECAUSE SEA LAMPREYS LIKE COLD
DEEP WATER,
AND OF COURSE WE SWIM IN WARM
SHALLOW WATER.
AND, SEA LAMPREYS DON'T LIKE
WARM
BLOODED ORGANISMS LIKE US.
Sayat says EVEN IF WE WERE IN THE WATER
FOR A REALLY LONG TIME?
Ted says EVEN IF WE'RE IN THE WATER
FOR A REALLY LONG TIME.
Christian says HEY GUYS,
I THINK WE GOT A BABY.
Gale says LET ME SEE.
NO, THAT LOOKS LIKE A LARVAL
LAMPREY
WHICH IS THE BABY OF THE
AMERICAN BROOK LAMPREY.
Sayat says WE'VE GOT OUR OWN LAMPREY?
Gale says YEAH, ACTUALLY WE HAVE FOUR
SPECIES OF NATIVE LAMPREY
IN THE GREAT LAKES; TWO OF THEM
ARE PARASITIC SPECIES.
Leo says A PARASITE IS A CREATURE
THAT NEEDS TO LIVE
ON ANOTHER CREATURE IN ORDER TO
SURVIVE, LIKE FLEAS,
OR LICE, OR THE STAR OF
THE SHOW, THE LAMPREY.
Sayat says THIS IS SO SMALL COMPARED
TO THE SEA LAMPREY.
Gale says THIS SPECIES DOESN'T GET ANY
BIGGER THAN THAT.
IT WILL CHANGE AND DEVELOP EYES
AND SOME TEETH,
BUT IT STAYS IN THE STREAM
AND SPAWNS IN THE STREAM
WITHOUT GOING TO FEED
ON FISH AT ALL.
AND SO IT'S VERY SMALL,
AND EVEN THE TWO SPECIES THAT
ARE PARASITIC SPECIES,
THEY DON'T GET AS LARGE
AS THE SEA LAMPREY
AND SO THEY DON'T DO AS MUCH
DAMAGE TO A FISH.
Pictures of two non-parasitic species appear: the American brook and the northern brook.
Now pictures of two parasitic species appear: the silver lamprey and the chestnut lamprey.
Christian says SO OUR LAMPREY ARE
ARE OKAY
CAUSE THEY DON'T HARM THE FISH
AND THEY DON'T TAKE TOO MUCH
BLOOD FROM THE FISH EITHER,
RIGHT?
Gale says YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT,
IT'S KIND OF A LIKE
A MOSQUITO BITE ON THE FISH.
Sayat says TODAY'S FISH TALE IS ABOUT
THE SEA LAMPREY.
THEY MAY SEEM LIKE BIG BULLIES
HERE IN THE GREAT LAKES,
BUT THEY'RE ACTUALLY LOVED BY
MANY PEOPLE IN OTHER COUNTRIES.
LAMPREY PIE IS A SPECIAL TREAT
IN SPAIN,
FRANCE, AND ENGLAND.
LAMPREY PIE WAS SERVED AT THE
QUEEN'S JUBILEE CELEBRATION,
AND THOSE LAMPREY CAME
FROM THE GREAT LAKES.
THE SEA LAMPREY MAY NOT BE
WELCOMED IN THE GREAT LAKES,
BUT THEY'RE LOVED BY
THE ROYALS. THE END.
Ted says HEY GUYS, I THINK
IT'S ABOUT TIME TO MARK
AND RELEASE THE SEA LAMPREYS.
CHRISTIAN, DO YOU WANNA HELP
GALE MARK THESE?
Christian says ABSOLUTELY.
Ted says GREAT.
SAYAT, WHY DON'T WE GO RELEASE
THE NATIVE FISHES THAT WE FOUND
AND THE NEW AMERICAN BROOK
LAMPREY
THAT WE FOUND
AND RELEASE THEM UPSTREAM.
Christian says AWESOME.
Gale gives Ted the bucket with the fish.
Ted says YEAH, THANKS.
Gale says THERE YOU GO.
WE CAUGHT 20.
Leo says A FEW LAMPREYS ARE MARKED
WITH A CLIP IN THEIR FIN
AND THEN RELEASED BACK
IN THE RIVER.
SO EACH TIME THEY CHECK
THE TRAPS
THEY CAN CHECK TO SEE WHO
IS MARKED AND WHO ISN'T.
AND THAT'S HOW THEY GET
A POPULATION ESTIMATE,
BY COMPARING THE NEW LAMPREY
WITH THE ONES WHO HAVE BEEN
MARKED, CLEVER, HUH?
Gale says NOW WE CAN GO RELEASE THEM.
Sayat says OFF YOU GO MR. AMERICAN BROOK
LAMPREY, SEE YOU LATER.
Gale says SO DID YOU HAVE FUN LEARNING
ABOUT SEA LAMPREY, CHRISTIAN?
Christian says YEAH. ARE YOU SURE IT'S OKAY
TO RELEASE THESE GUYS?
Gale says YEAH, IT'S DEFINITELY OKAY.
WE'RE RELEASING IN A SMALL
NUMBER,
WE REMOVE MOST OF THEM
FROM THE TRAP.
WE NEED TO RELEASE A SMALL
NUMBER TO GET A POPULATION
ESTIMATE,
AND THAT'S HOW WE KNOW THAT
WE'VE REDUCED THE POPULATION
BY 90 PERCENT IN ALL THE GREAT LAKES.
Christian says WOW! 90 PERCENT, THAT'S AMAZING.
BACK TO THE RIVER YOU GO THEN.
A sign reads "Fish heads alert."
Leo says ATTENTION FELLOW
FISHHEADS,
THE BEST WAY TO HELP
YOUR LOCAL RIVER
AND KEEP AHEAD OF THE SEA
LAMPREY
IS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THEM
AND LEARN THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN A NATIVE LAMPREY
AND SEA LAMPREY.
IF YOU CATCH A FISH WITH
A SEA LAMPREY ATTACHED,
PLEASE DON'T PUT THAT LAMPREY
BACK INTO THE WATER,
PLEEEASE!
OH, AND LET YOUR LOCAL WATER OR
CONSERVATION AUTHORITY KNOW.
Christian says THE SEA LAMPREY WERE A BIT
SCARY,
BUT THEY CERTAINLY ARE
INTERESTING CREATURES.
Ted says INDEED, EVERYTHING FROM THEIR
UNIQUE SENSE OF SMELL
TO COMMUNICATE,
TO GOING FROM A EYELESS,
TOOTHLESS WORM,
AND GROWING THOSE EYES
AND THOSE TEETH
INTO THE PARASITIC BLOODSUCKER
WE JUST SAW.
THEY'RE GREAT IN THE OCEAN,
THEY HOLD THEIR OWN AGAINST
SHARKS AND WHALES,
BUT THEY'RE JUST NOT GOOD
IN THE GREAT LAKES.
Gale says SO ARE YOU GUYS READY TO GO
CHECK SOME MORE TRAPS?
Sayat says WE'RE ALWAYS READY,
BUT NOT BEFORE THE FISHHEADS
HANDSHAKE.
LIKE THIS.
They all do the handshake and say FISHHEADS.
Ted says ALRIGHT.
Christian says GOOD.
Leo says WOW, SEEING THE GREAT WORK
BEING DONE BY THE FISHHEADS
AND THE SEA LAMPREY CONTROL
UNIT,
I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WAS EVER
WORRIED ABOUT.
HM... ON SECOND THOUGHT,
DON'T WANNA WASTE A PERFECTLY
GOOD STRING OF GARLIC. HA HA.
Music plays as the end credits roll.
