(music plays)

Against a white screen, the TVOKids and FifthGround Entertainment logos appear.

(giggling)

A caption reads "Original."

(theme music plays)

An animated blue sign that reads "FishHeads" falls into the sea.

Leo is an animated blue and orange catfish.

Leo says WE ARE THE FISHHEADS
EXPLORER CLUB,
SAYAT, CHRISTIAN,
AND ME, LEO.

Sayat and Christian are about 12 years old. Sayat has curly black hair and wears a blue sweater and a green lifejacket. Christian has short brown hair and wears glasses, an orange jacket and a blue T-shirt.

Leo continues TOGETHER, WE'RE GETTING WET
AND MUCKY
WORKING WITH EXPERTS AND
HELPING OUR AQUATIC FRIENDS.
EACH DAY WE'RE ON A NEW MISSION
EXPLORING WHAT'S GOING ON
ALONG THE SHORELINES
AND UNDER THE WAVES.
SPLISH, SPLASH, GRAB YOUR BOOTS
AND YOU CAN BE A FISHHEAD TOO.

Fast clips in split screens show Sayat and Christian sailing, exploring river eco-systems and learning about their creatures.

(water burbles)
The title of the show reads "FishHeads, Explorer Club."

Leo swims near two tablets at the bottom of a lake.

(huffing)
Leo looks around and says DID YOU LIKE THAT?
IT'S MY BEST IMPERSONATION
OF AN EASTERN SAND DARTER.
PHEW, I'VE GOTTEN MYSELF
A LITTLE BIT TOO WARM.
SPEAKING OF WARM,
OUR FRIENDS THE EASTERN SAND
DARTER ARE LENDING A FIN
WITH A SCIENCE EXPERIMENT
THAT MAY HELP OUT
ALL OF US FISH.
WHICH WHY THE EASTERN SAND
DARTER
ARE AT THE TOP OF OUR FISH
FINDER LIST TODAY.
HERE ARE THREE THINGS YOU
SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THEM;
NUMBER ONE:
THEY LIKE TO HIDE THEMSELVES
IN THE SAND
SO ONLY THEIR HEADS
ARE STICKING OUT.
NUMBER TWO:
EVEN WHEN THEY AREN'T BURIED
IN THE SAND,
THEY'RE SUPER HARD TO SPOT.
BESIDES A FEW YELLOW
OR BLACK SPOTS,
THEY'RE ALMOST INVISIBLE.
NUMBER THREE:
THE EASTERN SAND DARTER
ARE PART
OF A REALLY IMPORTANT SCIENCE
EXPERIMENT
BEING CONDUCTED BY THE
DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES
AND OCEANS.
AND THAT'S PART OF THE
FISHHEADS MISSION TODAY,
TO FIND OUT JUST HOW HOT
IS TOO HOT
FOR THE EASTERN SAND DARTER.

An animated map homes in on Grand River, Ontario.

A caption reads "Lynn Bolivier. Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Project Manager." Lynn is in her thirties, with straight brown hair. She wears a dark blue T-shirt.

Lynn says OKAY TEAM, WE NEED
TO DIVIDE AND CONQUER.
CHRISTIAN, CAN YOU GO WITH
ROBIN AND MEG IN THE BOAT
AND TROLL US SOME EASTERN
SAND DARTERS,
AND SAYAT, CAN YOU COME WITH ME
TO SET UP THE EXPERIMENT?

Sayat says SOUNDS GOOD.
HAVE FUN FISHING CHRISTIAN.

Christian says YOU KNOW I WILL.

Robin says BYE GUYS.

Christian says TELL ME MORE ABOUT
THE EASTERN SAND DARTER.
DOES IS ACTUALLY REALLY LIVE
IN THE SAND?

The caption changes to "Robin Gaspardy. Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Project Manager." Robin is in her late twenties. She wears a lifejacket over a black rain coat.

Robin says IT REALLY DOES, IT LIKES
TO BURY ITSELF IN THE SAND.

Christian says SO, HOW CAN IT BREATHE?

Robin says WELL, IT LEAVES ITS NOSE
AND ITS EYES OUT
SO THAT IT CAN STILL BREATHE
AND IT CAN SEE BUGS
AND ZOOPLANKTON GOING BY
THAT IT MIGHT WANT TO EAT.
THEN IT CAN ALSO HIDE FROM
PREDATORS LIKE PIKE AND BASS.

Christian says OH, SO IT'S LIKE THE FISH
VERSION OF HIDE AND SEEK.

Robin says YEAH, THAT'S A GREAT WAY
OF LOOKING AT IT.

Now, Robin and Christian travel in a boat.

Robin says OKAY, SO CHRISTIAN,
TO CATCH THESE FISH TODAY,
WE NEED TO DRAG A NET ALONG
THE BOTTOM TO CATCH THEM.
FIRST, WE'RE GOING TO SET
SOME FLOATS
SO THAT WE KNOW WHERE
WE'RE GONNA PULL OUR NET.
SO I'M USING MY GPS HERE
TO TELL ME WHERE TO THROW
THE FLOAT.

The caption changes to "Global Positioning System."

She continues SO AS I DRIVE UP, I'LL LET YOU
KNOW WHEN TO THROW IT.
OKAY, YOU READY?

Christian says READY.

Robin says OKAY, THROW IT NICE
AND FAR OVER THE SIDE.
(splash) GREAT.
WOO! A LITTLE SPLASHY.
SO NOW WE NEED TO SET ANOTHER
ONE AT THE TOP END,
AND THESE WILL BE LIKE
OUR START AND FINISH LINE.
OKAY, THROW IT!
WOO! GOOD THROW.

Christian says THANKS.

Leo says LYNN AND SAYAT ARE DIVING IN
AND GETTING ALL SET UP
FOR THE EASTERN SAND DARTERS
THAT ROBIN AND CHRISTIAN
ARE FISHING FOR.
READY, SET, SCIENCE!

Sayat and Lyn high-five.

Christian says OKAY, DARTERS,
HERE WE COME.

Robin says MEG'S ON THE FRONT
OF THE BOAT,
AND SHE'S GONNA START
THROWING OUT THE LINES.
OKAY, MEG, YOU CAN START
THROWING THE NET OUT.
(splash)
OKAY, DROP THEM.
SO WE WANNA GO NICE AND SLOW
SO THAT THE NET DRAGS ALONG
THE BOTTOM.

The caption changes to "Megan Hutchings. Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Field Biology Student."

With a long blond braid, Megan says OKAY CHRISTIAN, GET READY,
THE NET'S COMING IN.
SO I'M GOING TO PASS IT TO YOU
AND YOU CAN UNTIE IT
AND PUT THE FISH INTO THE BIN,
OKAY?

Robin says OKAY MEG, GET READY TO PULL
THE NET IN.
SO THE NET'S REALLY HEAVY,
SO MEG'S GOT TO PULL IT ALL IN
CAREFULLY OFF THE BOW,
AND I HAVE TO KEEP GOING IN
REVERSE TO MAKE SURE
WE DON'T ACCIDENTALLY
RUN IT OVER.
SO SHE'S SHAKING ALL THE FISH
DOWN INTO THE BOTTOM.

Meg says ALRIGHT CHRISTIAN,
HERE YOU GO,
YOU CAN START UNTYING
THAT FOR ME.

Christian says OH LOOK,
WE'VE CAUGHT SOMETHING!

Meg says YEAH, THERE YOU GO.
IF YOU WANT TO LIFT IT UP
AND SHAKE IT DOWN,
AND THAT'LL GET ALL
THE FISH OUT OF THERE
AND INTO THE BUCKET.
PERFECT.

Sayat and Lynn wait at the shore.

Christian says HEY SAYAT.

Sayat says HEY CHRISTIAN.

Christian says WE GOT SOME REALLY COOL
EASTERN SAND DARTERS.

Sayat says REALLY?

Christian says YEAH.

Sayat says CAN I SEE?

Robin says HERE, WE'LL GET THE BIN OUT
OF THE BOAT FOR YOU
SO THAT YOU CAN SEE
WHAT FISH WE CAUGHT.
LET'S SEE IF I CAN FIND ONE.
WE CAN PUT IT IN THE VIEWING
BOX SO YOU GUYS CAN SEE.

Sayat says OH MY GOODNESS.

Christian says OH, WOW.

Robin says AREN'T THEY NEAT?

Sayat says THEY'RE REALLY COOL.

Robin says YEAH.

Sayat says THEY REALLY DO HAVE
THE PERFECT COLOURING
FOR HIDING IN THE SAND.

Showing it on her hand, Robin says OH LOOK, THIS IS A BABY
SMALLMOUTH BASS.
WHEN IT'S AN ADULT,
IT MIGHT EAT AN EASTERN SAND
DARTER BUT RIGHT NOW,
IT'S JUST EATING SMALL THINGS.
SO WE'LL PUT IT IN THIS BUCKET
TO RELEASE IT LATER.
THEY'RE PRETTY FEISTY.

Christian says YEAH.

Robin says GOOD WORK.

Christian says OH, I THINK I GOT AN EASTERN
SAND DARTER.

Robin says OH, THERE YOU GO.
YEAH CHRISTIAN,
YOU GOT AN EASTERN SAND DARTER.
SO BE NICE AND GENTLE,
SEE THE SPOTS DOWN THE SIDE,
AND THEY'RE NICE AND LONG.
AND YOU CAN ALMOST SEE
RIGHT THROUGH THEM,
SO WE'RE GONNA PUT THEM BACK
IN THIS BUCKET OF WATER
REALLY QUICKLY,
MAKE SURE THEY GET ANOTHER
BREATH. THERE YOU GO.
GREAT WORK.
YOU GUYS ARE QUICK LEARNERS.

Lynn says HOW MANY EASTERN SAND
DARTERS DID WE GET
FOR OUR EXPERIMENT, GUYS?

Christian says THREE.

Lynn says THAT'S AMAZING, GREAT JOB.
NOW WE CAN RELEASE THE REST OF
THE FISH BACK INTO THE RIVER.
OKAY GUYS, BEFORE WE START
THE EXPERIMENT,
WE HAVE TO CHECK TO SEE IF ANY
OF THESE EASTERN SAND DARTERS
HAVE TAGS ON THEM.

Sayat says WHY WOULD THEY HAVE TAGS?

Lynn says WELL, WE'VE DONE THIS
EXPERIMENT IN THIS RIVER
A FEW TIMES,
SO WE JUST WANNA CHECK
TO MAKE SURE THAT THESE GUYS
HAVEN'T GONE THROUGH
THE EXPERIMENT BEFORE.
WE MARK THEM WITH A LITTLE BIT
OF FLUORESCENT DYE
SO WE CAN TELL WHICH ONES
HAVE AND HAVEN'T.

Robin says LIFT IT UP AND SEE UNDERNEATH
IF YOU CAN SEE A TAG.

Sayat says OKAY.

Christian says NOPE, THEY'RE ALL CLEAR.

Lynn says THAT'S FANTASTIC,
SO ALL THREE OF THESE,
WE CAN USE FOR OUR EXPERIMENT.
CHRISTIAN, CAN YOU RELEASE
THE OTHER FISH UPSTREAM
AND THEN COME BACK
AND MEET US HERE
TO RUN THE EXPERIMENT WITH US?

Christian says SURE.

Lynn says PERFECT.
SO THE FIRST THING
WE'RE GONNA DO
IS JUST SCOOP OUT
THE EASTERN SAND DARTER
AND JUST PUT IT IN THIS HOLDING
TANK, HERE.

Sayat says OKAY.

Lynn says OH, PERFECT.

Sayat says WOW, THEY'RE SO BEAUTIFUL.
THEY'RE ALMOST CLEAR.

Lynn says I KNOW, THEY'RE REALLY
AMAZING.
IT'S SO NEAT HOW THEY SPEND
MOST OF THEIR LIFE
BURIED IN THE SAND WITH
JUST THEIR HEADS AND EYES
PEEKING OUT.

Sayat chuckles and says YEAH, KIND OF LIKE ME
WHEN I'M AT THE BEACH.
EITHER BURIED IN THE SAND
OR IN THE WATER.

Lynn says I KNOW.

Sayat says I WISH I COULD DO BOTH
AT THE SAME TIME.

Lynn says IT'S PRETTY AMAZING, EH?

Sayat says YEAH.

Lynn says SO THIS MACHINE HERE,
WHAT IT'S GOING TO DO
IS IT'S ACTUALLY GOING TO
INCREASE THE WATER TEMPERATURE
BY ONE DEGREE
EVERY THREE MINUTES.

Sayat says WHAT WILL THE HOT WATER
TELL US?

Lynn says THE EASTERN SAND DARTER
WILL START TO DART AROUND
THE AQUARIUM
WHEN IT'S GETTING A LITTLE BIT
TOO HOT FOR THEM.

Sayat says HOW DOES THAT HELP?

Lynn says WELL, IT GIVES US A BETTER
UNDERSTANDING
OF HOW EASTERN SAND DARTERS
REACT IN DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS,
ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY'RE GETTING
TOO HOT,
AND WE CAN TAKE THAT
INFORMATION
AND LEARN MORE ABOUT THE FISH
COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE.
AND WHAT THAT CAN HELP US WITH,
IS WE CAN TIE THAT BACK
TO WAYS TO KEEP OUR RIVERS
AND STREAMS COOL.
SO, PLANTING TREES ON
THE SIDE OF THE RIVERBANK.

Sayat says SO THEY'RE KIND OF LIKE
OUR LITTLE HEROES,
HELPING SCIENCE
AND OUR COMMUNITY.

Lynn says YEAH, THAT'S EXACTLY IT,
THEY'RE PRETTY INCREDIBLE
LITTLE GUYS.
SO IN ORDER TO GET THE
EXPERIMENT STARTED,
I'M JUST GONNA GET YOU
TO START THE CIRCULATOR
AND I'M GOING TO TURN IT ON
FROM THE COMPUTER.

Sayat says AWESOME. I'M GONNA TURN IT ON
RIGHT NOW.

Lynn says THERE WE GO.
(whirring)
PERFECT, SO IT'S JUST
STARTING UP NOW.

Sayat says WHOA.

Christian says IT'S AMAZING HOW MANY
DIFFERENT TYPES OF FISH
LIVE IN A RIVER.

Robin says I KNOW,
IT'S EASY TO LOOK AT A LITTLE
RIVER LIKE THIS
AND THINK IT'S REALLY MURKY
AND THAT NOTHING LIVES HERE,
BUT IT'S ACTUALLY HOME
TO A LOT OF DIFFERENT FISH,
AND PLANTS, AND A LOT OF
DIFFERENT WILDLIFE.

An underwater camera shows a fish swimming.

Christian says AMAZING.

Robin says YEAH, LET'S RELEASE THESE FISH
AND THEN GO CHECK ON
THE EXPERIMENT.

Christian says HEY.

Robin says HEY GUYS.

Sayat says HEY.

Christian says HOW'S THE EXPERIMENT GOING?

Sayat says IT'S GOING AWESOME.

Lynn says WE'RE JUST ABOUT READY
TO TAKE THIS GUY OUT
AND PUT HIM IN THE RECOVERY
TANK.

Sayat says HE'S READY TO GO HOME?

Lynn says I THINK SO, YEAH,
DO YOU WANNA GRAB THE NET,
SAYAT?
YOU CAN MOVE HIM OVER.

Sayat says SURE. THANKS.

Lynn says PERFECT. SO JUST SCOOP HIM UP
AND PUT HIM
IN THE RECOVERY TANK.

Sayat says TIME TO GO, LITTLE GUY.

Lynn says PERFECT, AND WE'LL JUST
TAKE SOME OF THE HOT WATER
FROM THE TANK TOO,
JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT IT'S NOT
TOO MUCH OF A SHOCK FOR HIM.
IF YOU WANT TO POUR THAT
IN THE BUCKET, TOO.

Sayat says YEAH.
IT LOOKED PRETTY UNCOMFORTABLE
AT THE END.
IT'S LIKE SOMEONE COMING
INTO YOUR HOME
AND TURNING UP THE HEAT
AND YOU'RE NOT ABLE TO OPEN
A WINDOW
OR EVEN TURN ON THE AIR
CONDITIONING.

Lynn says I KNOW, IT'S PRETTY
INCREDIBLE.
IT'S WHAT FISHES ARE FEELING
ALL OVER THE WORLD,
EXCEPT THEY DON'T HAVE AN EASY
WAY TO GET AWAY
FROM THE INCREASING WATER
TEMPERATURES.

Christian says THE DARTER'S GONNA BE OKAY
THOUGH, RIGHT?

Robin says THE DARTER'S GONNA BE OKAY.
IT WON'T BE HARMED AT ALL.
WE MADE SURE TO TAKE IT OUT
BEFORE IT WAS TOO HOT,
AND NOW IT'S IN THE RECOVERY
BIN SO IT CAN COOL DOWN
AND START TO FEEL BETTER
BEFORE WE RELEASE IT.
BUT A GOOD SCIENCE EXPERIMENT,
WE WANT TO RUN MORE THAN ONCE.
SO LET'S GET THIS TANK
EMPTIED OUT
AND PUT SOME FRESH WATER IN
SO THAT WE CAN RUN IT AGAIN
WITH ANOTHER FISH.

Robin pours more water into a fish tank and Sayat takes down notes.

Robin says REMEMBER AT THE BEGINNING,
WE CHECKED THEM TO SEE
IF THEY HAD A FLUORESCENT TAG?
WELL, SINCE THEY'VE FINISHED
THIS EXPERIMENT,
WE NEED TO GIVE THEM THEIR OWN
FLUORESCENT TAG,
TO MAKE SURE THAT WE DON'T RUN
THEM THROUGH
THE EXPERIMENT AGAIN NEXT TIME.

Sayat says BUT THEY LOOK SO SMALL,
HOW DO YOU TAG THEM?

Lynn says SO WE JUST PUT A LITTLE BIT
OF DYE UNDERNEATH THEIR SKIN.
IT MAKES IT EASIER FOR US
TO SEE THEM
THE NEXT TIME WE CATCH THEM.

Christian says COOL.

Sayat says AWESOME.

Sayat takes a small fish out of a net and says THIS ONE SEEMS A LOT CALMER
THAN HE PREVIOUSLY WAS.

Lynn says YEAH, WE PUT THEM
IN A CLOVE OIL BATH,
IT KIND OF RELAXES THEM
SO IT MAKES IT A LITTLE EASIER
FOR US TO HANDLE.

Christian says JUST LIKE WHEN I GOT MY
TONSILS REMOVED.
THEY PUT ME TO SLEEP
SO I DIDN'T FEEL IT.

Lynn says YEAH, IT'S EXACTLY THE SAME
THING.

Robin says OKAY, THIS ONE'S READY
TO GO INTO THE RECOVERY BIN.

Now, the team stands by a river shore.

Sayat says IT'S BEEN A BIG DAY
FOR THESE LITTLE GUYS.
THEY TRULY ARE SCIENCE HEROES.
I BET THEY'LL BE HAPPY
TO GET HOME.

Robin says NO DOUBT. THEM BEING PART OF
OUR EXPERIMENT
WILL HELP US TO HELP THEM
AND ALL OF THE OTHER FISH
IN THE FISH COMMUNITY.

Lynn says THANKS SO MUCH FOR GIVING US
A HAND TODAY, FISHHEADS.

Christian says THAT'S THE FISHHEADS MOTTO:
ALWAYS BE READY TO HELP
A FIN FRIEND.

Sayat pours a bucket of water into the river and says BYE, LITTLE GUYS!

Christian says BYE.

(foghorn)

Leo says ATTENTION FELLOW FISHHEADS.
OF COURSE, THE BEST WAY TO HELP
THIS SPEEDY LITTLE GUY
AND ALL OF OUR FINNED FRIENDS
IS TO GET TO KNOW US BETTER.
CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL
CONSERVATION AUTHORITY,
AND BECOME A COOL CITIZEN
SCIENTIST.
THERE'S ALL KINDS OF GREAT
SCIENCE ADVENTURES
THAT YOU CAN BECOME A PART OF.
SPLISH SPLASH, I'LL SEE YOU
DOWN BY THE STREAM.
GO SCIENCE, GO FISHHEADS!

(theme music plays)

The end credits roll.
