An animated blue sign that reads "FishHeads" falls into the sea.
Leo is an animated blue and orange catfish.
Leo says WE ARE THE FISHHEADS
EXPLORER CLUB,
SAYAT, CHRISTIAN,
AND ME, LEO.
Sayat and Christian are about 12 years old. Sayat has curly black hair and wears a blue sweater and a green lifejacket. Christian has short brown hair and wears glasses, an orange jacket and a blue T-shirt.
Leo continues TOGETHER, WE'RE GETTING WET
AND MUCKY
WORKING WITH EXPERTS AND
HELPING OUR AQUATIC FRIENDS.
EACH DAY WE'RE ON A NEW MISSION
EXPLORING WHAT'S GOING ON
ALONG THE SHORELINES
AND UNDER THE WAVES.
SPLISH, SPLASH, GRAB YOUR BOOTS
AND YOU CAN BE A FISHHEAD TOO.
Fast clips in split screens show Sayat and Christian sailing, exploring river eco-systems and learning about their creatures.
(water burbles)
The title of the show reads "FishHeads, Explorer Club."
Leo swims near two tablets at the bottom of a lake.
Leo sings WALK, WALK,
WALKING WITH THE FISHES
AS THE TIDE GOES OUT TO SEA
LOOKING FOR CRITTERS
AND YUMMY SNACKS
ALL ALONG THE WAY, HEY!
An animated map homes in on Fundy National Park in New Brunswick.
Leo says THE FISHHEADS ARE HEADED OUT
TO DO SOMETHING
EVEN I CAN'T DO:
THEY ARE WALKING
ON THE OCEAN FLOOR.
SOUNDS CRAZY, HUH?
ANYONE WHO LIVES NEAR
THE OCEAN CAN DO THIS,
YOU JUST HAVE TO WAIT
FOR THE TIDE TO GO OUT.
THE FISHHEADS ARE MEETING UP
WITH DAN FROM PARKS CANADA
TO DO A SURVEY
OF ALL THE CREATURES
THAT ARE LEFT BEHIND
WHEN THE TIDE GOES OUT.
WHY, YOU ASK?
NOT ONLY ARE THEY AMAZING
BECAUSE THEY CAN LIVE
IN THE WATER,
OUT OF THE WATER,
SURVIVE THE CRUSHING WAVES
AND CHANGING TEMPERATURES,
WHICH I THINK MAKES THEM
LIKE MINI-SUPERHEROES,
BUT THEY'RE YUMMY SNACKS
FOR MY OCEAN-GOING,
FINNED FRIENDS.
IF THEY'RE DOING WELL,
IT MEANS NO ONE
IS GOING HUNGRY,
AND AS YOU KNOW,
A FULL BELLY IS ONE
OF MY TOP PRIORITIES.
Christian and Sayat run to a beach.
Christian says HEY DAN?
A caption reads "Dan Sinclar." He is in his early forties, clean-shaven with short blond hair. He wears a beige cap and a blue jacket.
Dan says YOU MADE IT!
WELCOME, WELCOME.
Sayat says HEY.
They high-five.
Dan says WELCOME TO FUNDY NATIONAL
PARK.
WE'RE RIGHT HERE
ON THE BAY OF FUNDY.
IT'S JUST AFTER HIGH TIDE,
YOU CAN KIND OF SEE WHERE
THE LINE OF SEAWEED IS
ON THE BEACH, SO THE TIDE'S
SLOWLY MAKING ITS WAY OUT.
SO I THOUGHT TODAY,
WHAT WE'D DO
IS WE'D FOLLOW THE TIDE OUT
AND WE'D VISIT
THE INTER-TIDAL ZONE, THAT AREA
BETWEEN HIGH TIDE AND LOW TIDE,
AND AS WE FOLLOW IT OUT,
I'LL INTRODUCE YOU TO ALL
OF THE DIFFERENT CRITTERS
THAT DON'T GO OUT
WITH THE TIDE.
Christian says HEY DAN, WHAT TYPE
OF FISHES WILL THERE BE?
Dan says RIGHT NOW, FISH ARE SWIMMING
ALL AROUND IN HERE.
THERE'S A LOT OF HERRING,
SHAD, MACKEREL,
BUT THEN YOU GET A LOT
OF BOTTOM-DWELLING FISH,
LIKE THE SCULPINS
ARE MY FAVOURITE,
THE GOOSEFISH,
WHICH HAVE BIG MOUTHS
AND THEY SIT THERE,
AND THEY EAT CRABS
AND OTHER THINGS AS WELL.
Pictures of the fish mentioned flash by.
Christian says SO, WE MIGHT BE LUCKY
AND FIND A FISH
THAT'S BEEN TRAPPED
IN A TIDEPOOL,
BUT MOST OF THE FISH GO OUT
WITH THE TIDE, AS WELL.
WE'RE GOING TO WALK
ALL THE WAY ALONG,
YOU SEE THAT ROCK POINT, THERE?
AND BEYOND.
Sayat says HOW ARE WE GOING TO GO
ALL THE WAY OUT THERE?
Dan says SO THE WATER'S SLOWLY MAKING
ITS WAY OUT,
AND WE'RE GONNA GO WALK
RIGHT ON THE OCEAN FLOOR,
IN THE INTER-TIDAL ZONE.
SO THIS STICK IS GONNA BE OUR
MARKER FOR TELLING US
WHERE THE WATER WAS
TO WHERE IT'S GONNA BE.
(whistle blows)
Leo says SAFETY CHECK.
OKAY, FISHHEADS,
YOU ALREADY KNOW TO WEAR
YOUR PFD AND RUBBER BOOTS
WHEN AROUND THE WATER,
BUT WHEN YOU GO ON EXPLORE CLUB
ADVENTURES BY THE OCEAN,
YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN
THE WATER LEVELS, OR THE TIDE,
IS GOING TO RISE.
UNLIKE THE LAKES AND RIVERS,
THE WATER IN THE OCEAN CHANGES
LEVELS THROUGHOUT THE DAY.
LOW TIDE IS WHEN THE WATER
HAS MOVED AWAY FROM THE SHORE
AND HIGH TIDE IS WHEN ALL
THE WATER IS BACK.
THIS HAPPENS EVERY SINGLE DAY,
SO KNOWING WHEN THE TIDES
ARE COMING BACK IN
IS EXTRA IMPORTANT
AS THE WATER CAN RISE QUICKLY.
GO EXPLORING WITH AN ADULT,
AND MAKE SURE THEY KNOW
WHEN THE TIDE WILL BE HIGH
SO YOU'RE BACK SAFELY ON SHORE
WHEN THE WATER RISES.
Christian says WHOA! LOOK HOW FAR IT'S GONE.
Dan says YEAH.
SO REMEMBER,
WHEN WE PUT THE STICK HERE,
THE WATER WAS RIGHT HERE.
He points to the lower part of the stick.
He continues ONLY IN ABOUT AN HOUR,
THE WATER'S NOW
ALL THE WAY OVER THERE
AND IT'S STILL GOING OUT.
Christian says HEY DAN, WHERE DOES
THE WATER GO?
Dan says THE WATER IS SLOWLY MOVING
OUT OF THE BAY OF FUNDY
AND OUT INTO THE ATLANTIC
OCEAN.
THEY SAY THAT THE AMOUNT...
IF YOU IMAGINE EVERY RIVER
IN THE WORLD
AND HOW MUCH WATER COMES OUT
OF THAT RIVER IN A DAY,
THAT'S HOW MUCH WATER MOVES
IN AND OUT OF THE BAY OF FUNDY
IN ONE TIDE CYCLE.
SO AS THE WATER'S MOVING OUT,
IT'S UNCOVERING ROCKS
AND ALL KINDS OF NEAT THINGS.
SO LET'S GO CHECK IT OUT
OVER HERE.
Christian says MHMM.
Sayat says I ACTUALLY CAN'T BELIEVE
IT MOVED THIS FAR.
Dan says YEAH.
SO WE'RE NOW OFFICIALLY
IN THE INTER-TIDAL ZONE
AND YOU SEE, UP HERE WHERE
THE LAST HIGH TIDE IS.
THERE'S A BIT OF WATER MARKS.
Sayat says AROUND THERE?
Dan says PROBABLY, YEAH, RIGHT OVER
THERE, OR JUST ABOVE,
ABOVE WHERE THE SEAWEED IS.
THIS IS THE FOREST
OF THE INTER-TIDAL ZONE.
WHEN THE TIDE'S IN,
THIS IS ALL FLOATING AROUND.
FISH AND SNAILS AND ALL KINDS
OF THINGS ARE MOVING AROUND
AND FEEDING OFF IT
AND FINDING SHELTER.
BUT IF YOU LOOK UNDERNEATH YOU
CAN SEE SOME OF THE SNAILS,
THERE'S PERIWINKLE RIGHT HERE.
FEW OTHER PERIWINKLES UP TOP.
FIND A PERIWINKLE?
LITTLE, LITTLE DARK SNAILS.
Christian says HOW DO THE SNAILS LIVE
IF THEY'RE NOT UNDERWATER
WHEN THE TIDE GOES OUT?
Dan says WELL, IT'S SO WET UNDER HERE
THAT THE SEAWEED
ACTUALLY PROVIDES A DIFFERENT
HABITAT FOR THEM.
SO THEY CAN COME OUT,
CRAWL AROUND
AND THEN CRAWL UNDERNEATH
THIS WET SEAWEED
AND PROTECT THEMSELVES.
SO THEY CAN SURVIVE
THE ENTIRE TIDE CYCLE,
MOVING AROUND AND KIND
OF MAKING THIS THEIR,
THEIR HOME. IT'S JUST ONCE
THEY GET ONTO THE BEACH
WHERE THERE'S NO WATER,
THAT'S WHERE THEY'RE THREATENED
TO DRY OUT.
IF YOU WANT TO FIND ONE
JUST PUT IT ON YOUR HAND,
WE CAN TAKE A CLOSER LOOK.
THEY HAVE THESE LITTLE DOORS
THAT THEY CLOSE,
IF YOU FLIP THEM OVER,
THERE'S A LITTLE DOOR
THAT THEY'RE PROBABLY
JUST STARTING TO CLOSE,
JUST TO PROTECT THEMSELVES
FROM BEING DISTURBED,
OR PREYED UPON.
BUT THEY ALSO CAN RESPOND...
I'VE KNOWN THEM TO COME OUT
WHEN YOU WHISTLE AT THEM.
DO YOU KNOW HOW TO WHISTLE?
(whistling)
Dan says SO I'VE NOTICED MINE'S
STARTING TO OPEN ITS DOOR
A LITTLE BIT AND START
PEEKING OUT.
Christian says OH WOW, YOURS REALLY
CAME OUT.
Dan says I DO NOT KNOW WHY
THEY DO THIS.
I LIKE TO CALL THEM THE COWS
OF THE SEA,
BECAUSE THEY HAVE THESE TWO
LITTLE TENTACLES THAT COME UP
AND START FEELING AROUND,
KIND OF LIKE THE HORNS OF A COW.
SO IF YOU WANT TO TAKE YOUR
PERIWINKLES,
MAYBE PUT THEM RIGHT UNDERNEATH
THE SEAWEED
SO THEY CAN WAIT OUT UNTIL
THE TIDE COMES BACK IN
AND I'VE JUST, I SEE THAT
THERE'S A TIDEPOOL OPENED UP
SO LET'S CHECK OUT TO SEE WHAT
MIGHT BE HANGING OUT IN THERE.
Christian says YEAH.
Dan says LET'S GO.
SO OFTEN THINGS,
WHEN THE TIDE'S GOING OUT,
THEY ALL FUNNEL KIND
OF DOWN INTO TIDEPOOLS
AND THEY STAY NICE AND WET,
THOUGH THEY GET REALLY,
REALLY WARM.
They walk into the shore.
Dan continues SO THEY'RE HIDING UNDER ROCKS
OR JUST KIND OF HIDING
IN THEIR SHELLS, AS WELL.
TAKE A LOOK-OH,
AND I SEE A HERMIT CRAB.
Christian says OH, OH, I SEE IT.
Dan says THERE IT IS.
Christian says CAN I GRAB IT WITH THE NET?
Dan says YEAH.
YOU CAN GRAB IT RIGHT
WITH YOUR HANDS.
Christian says OH, I GOT IT.
Dan says AS THEY GROW,
THEY'LL GET TOO BIG
FOR THIS SHELL
AND THEY'LL MOVE ONTO OTHER
SHELLS,
SO THEY SOMETIMES WILL HAVE
FIGHTS FOR SHELLS.
Christian says MAN, I REALLY LOVE HERMIT
CRABS,
THEY'RE LIKE MY FAVOURITE
CRAB OF ALL TIME.
Sayat places a small crab in a plastic container.
Dan says THEY'RE REALLY NEAT,
AREN'T THEY?
AND THEY'RE SO CAMOUFLAGED
BECAUSE ONCE THEY'RE
IN THEIR SHELL,
THEY JUST LOOK
LIKE A PERIWINKLE.
DO YOU WANT TO TRY CUPPING HIM
ON YOUR HAND?
THEY DON'T PINCH.
Sayat says LOOK AT THAT.
Dan says EVENTUALLY THEY'LL PEEK OUT.
SO I FOUND A LITTLE SHRIMP
AS WELL.
Sayat says REALLY?
Dan says SO SOMETIMES WE'LL SEE
LITTLE SHRIMP.
SO THERE'S A FEW DIFFERENT
TYPES THAT WE'LL FIND,
BUT THIS IS A LITTLE
SAND SHRIMP, HERE.
ALMOST SEE THROUGH ALMOST, HUH?
PROBABLY GETS IT'S NAME,
SAND SHRIMP,
BECAUSE IT BLENDS SO WELL IN
WITH THE SAND.
Christian says WOW. THESE GUYS ARE REALLY,
REALLY COOL.
Now, they stand in a rocky area near the shore.
Dan says SO WE'RE VERY CLOSE
TO LOW TIDE NOW,
REMEMBER I POINTED OUT TO THAT
POINT OF ROCK RIGHT THERE
AND SAID WE'RE GOING
TO THERE AND BEYOND.
WE ARE NOW BEYOND.
Sayat says YEAH.
Dan says SO WE CAN SEE LOTS OF SEAWEED
CLINGING TO THE ROCKS,
WE CAN SEE PERIWINKLES,
WE CAN SEE BARNACLES.
THIS IS WHERE WE START SEEING
A LOT OF DIFFERENT CREATURES
SURVIVING IN THE INTER-TIDAL
ZONE.
SO I'M GOING TO GIVE YOU EACH
A, A LITTLE TRAY
TO COLLECT YOUR STUFF IN.
SO WE'LL MAKE OUR WAY OVER
THESE ROCKS
AND WE'LL FIND SOME GOOD SPOTS
TO LOOK.
(music plays)
Sayat says OH, HEY CHRISTIAN,
LOOK WHAT I FOUND!
Christian says NICE.
CHECK THIS AREA OUT NOW.
Dan says SO GREAT SEARCHING, GUYS,
WE FOUND A GOOD,
A GOOD SAMPLING.
ONE OF THE THINGS WE FOUND
ARE SOME DOG WHELK,
SO THESE ARE THE CARNIVOROUS
SNAILS OF THE INTER-TIDAL ZONE
AND WE'VE ALSO FOUND
THEIR LUNCH,
THE PERIWINKLES, AS WELL.
SO THEY'LL MOVE ALONG,
FIND THEIR PREY
AND SIT ON TOP OF THEIR PREY
AND THEN, WITH THEIR TONGUE,
START LICKING THE SHELL
AND IT TAKES ABOUT FIVE
OR SIX HOURS TO LICK
ALL THE WAY THROUGH,
A PERFECTLY DRILLED HOLE
INTO THE SHELL,
AND THEN ALL THEY HAVE TO DO
IS SPIT INSIDE THE HOLE
AND THEN,
(SLURPS)
SLURP EVERYTHING UP.
IT'S LIKE A NICE PERIWINKLE
MILKSHAKE, I GUESS.
Leo says HUH, THAT'S A LONG TIME
TO WAIT FOR A MILKSHAKE.
OOH, IT MUST BE PRETTY YUMMY.
Dan says AND THEN WE'VE ALSO FOUND
GREEN CRABS.
AND YOU CAN ALSO SEE I'M QUITE
COMFORTABLE HOLDING CRABS
EVEN THOUGH THE ONE IMPORTANT
THING ABOUT HOLDING A CRAB
IS WHAT?
YOU GOT TO WATCH OUT FOR...
Christian says NOT TO GET PINCHED.
Dan continues EXACTLY,
YOU GOTTA WATCH OUT
FOR NOT BEING PINCHED.
BUT I ALWAYS LIKE TO EITHER,
HOLD MY FINGERS
RIGHT OVER THE PINCHER,
OR YOU CAN HOLD IT RIGHT
IN THE BACK,
OR RIGHT BEHIND THE PINCHERS
LIKE THIS
AND HOLD IT LIKE THAT.
THIS ONE'S NOT VERY HAPPY
WITH ME ANYMORE,
SO I'LL PUT HIM BACK DOWN.
AND THEN WE ALSO FOUND THESE,
THESE ARE MORE IN THE MUDDY,
SANDY AREAS,
BUT THIS IS A SOFT-SHELLED
CLAM.
AND THEN ONE OF MY FAVOURITES
THAT YOU FIND OUT HERE
IS ALL THESE TINY LITTLE
BARNACLES.
SO THEY BUILD UP THESE LITTLE
VOLCANO HOUSES
AND THEN YOU CAN SEE IT
REALLY AT THE TOP
THAT IT KIND OF LOOKS ALMOST
LIKE A DIAMOND SHAPED
AT THE TOP, THAT IS THE DOORS.
SO WHEN THE TIDE'S OUT,
THEY JUST SHUT THOSE DOORS
AND THEY'RE IN A PERFECTLY
SEALED, HAPPY LITTLE SPOT.
SO WHEN THEY OPEN UP THE DOORS,
THEY HAVE TO ONLY STICK OUT
THEIR FEET
AND THEIR FEET ARE LONG,
FEATHERY THINGS
AND THEY START KICKING FOOD
INTO THEIR MOUTH.
Sayat says IT'S AMAZING HOW EVERYTHING'S
SO SMALL
BUT THEY ALL HAVE A BIG IMPACT
ON EACH OTHER.
Dan says YEAH, IF YOU IMAGINE TRYING
TO SURVIVE OUT HERE
IF YOU WERE A BIG THING,
YOU'D HAVE VERY LITTLE SPOT
TO HIDE OR FIND SHELTER.
SO SMALLER IS KIND OF BETTER
IN THE INTER-TIDAL ZONE,
AS WELL.
Sayat says YEAH.
Dan says MHMM.
GREAT, GREAT FINDS,
EVERYONE,
BUT MAYBE IT'S TIME THAT WE
START HEADING BACK UP THE BEACH.
Christian says OH WOW, WE GOTTA WALK
REALLY FAR.
Dan says WELL, I TOLD YOU IT
WAS A TREK.
Leo says BARNACLES, PERIWINKLES,
CLAMS,
OOH, AND HERMIT CRABS, OH MY!
WHAT A DAY, FISHHEADS!
WAY TO DIG IN THE MUD
AND FIND OUT WHAT'S GOING ON
WITH OUR MARINE PALS.
(foghorn)
ATTENTION, FELLOW FISHHEADS.
THERE ARE LOTS OF WAYS TO HELP
THIS AMAZING COMMUNITY
KEEP THRIVING.
DON'T USE PLASTIC STRAWS,
CARRY A REFILLABLE
WATER BOTTLE.
YOU KNOW WHERE THIS IS GOING.
PLASTIC IS REALLY HARMFUL
TO OUR LAKES AND OCEANS,
AND ALL OF US CREATURES
WHO LIVE IN THE WATER.
PLEASE DO WHATEVER YOU CAN
TO NOT USE PLASTIC
AND IF YOU DO, KEEP IT AWAY
FROM THE WATER.
IT'S EASY FOR US TO MISTAKE
AS FOOD.
OOH, ALL THIS TALK ABOUT SNACKS
HAS MADE ME HUNGRY.
OFF TO FIND
A PLASTIC-FREE MEAL.

THEY JUST SHUT THOSE DOORS
AND THEY'RE IN A PERFECTLY
SEALED, HAPPY LITTLE SPOT.
SO WHEN THEY OPEN UP THE DOORS,
THEY HAVE TO ONLY STICK OUT
THEIR FEET
AND THEIR FEET ARE LONG,
FEATHERY THINGS
AND THEY START KICKING FOOD
INTO THEIR MOUTH.
Sayat says IT'S AMAZING HOW EVERYTHING'S
SO SMALL
BUT THEY ALL HAVE A BIG IMPACT
ON EACH OTHER.
Dan says YEAH, IF YOU IMAGINE TRYING
TO SURVIVE OUT HERE
IF YOU WERE A BIG THING,
YOU'D HAVE VERY LITTLE SPOT
TO HIDE OR FIND SHELTER.
SO SMALLER IS KIND OF BETTER
IN THE INTER-TIDAL ZONE,
AS WELL.
Sayat says YEAH.
Dan says MHMM.
GREAT, GREAT FINDS,
EVERYONE,
BUT MAYBE IT'S TIME THAT WE
START HEADING BACK UP THE BEACH.
Christian says OH WOW, WE GOTTA WALK
REALLY FAR.
Dan says WELL, I TOLD YOU IT
WAS A TREK.
Leo says BARNACLES, PERIWINKLES,
CLAMS,
OOH, AND HERMIT CRABS, OH MY!
WHAT A DAY, FISHHEADS!
WAY TO DIG IN THE MUD
AND FIND OUT WHAT'S GOING ON
WITH OUR MARINE PALS.
(foghorn)
ATTENTION, FELLOW FISHHEADS.
THERE ARE LOTS OF WAYS TO HELP
THIS AMAZING COMMUNITY
KEEP THRIVING.
DON'T USE PLASTIC STRAWS,
CARRY A REFILLABLE
WATER BOTTLE.
YOU KNOW WHERE THIS IS GOING.
PLASTIC IS REALLY HARMFUL
TO OUR LAKES AND OCEANS,
AND ALL OF US CREATURES
WHO LIVE IN THE WATER.
PLEASE DO WHATEVER YOU CAN
TO NOT USE PLASTIC
AND IF YOU DO, KEEP IT AWAY
FROM THE WATER.
IT'S EASY FOR US TO MISTAKE
AS FOOD.
OOH, ALL THIS TALK ABOUT SNACKS
HAS MADE ME HUNGRY.
OFF TO FIND
A PLASTIC-FREE MEAL.
(theme music plays)
The end credits roll.
