WE WERE FARMERS,
AND CORN WAS ONE OF
OUR MOST IMPORTANT PLANTS.
SO WE MADE THESE DOLLS
FOR OUR CHILDREN.
NOW, TRY TAKING OFF A LEAF.
PEEL IT AND
JUST PULL IT OFF.
WE'RE GOING TO HAVE
A LITTLE RACE, OKAY?”

THE WATER, LIKE THIS.”
Patricia continues, “SO, WE'RE GOING TO GET FIVE.
TIE IT AROUND SO THAT IT DOESN'T COME APART.
PULL IT ALL DOWN. JUST IMAGINE IT'S KIND OF
LIKE A BANANA PEEL.”
Maliyah says, “THE CORN HUSK DOLL WAS REALLY
FUN, BUT IT WAS A LITTLE BIT HARD.”

TO BE OUR FACE. TIE IT REALLY TIGHT.”

BRAIDED ARM. THE SCARF. NOW WE NEED A
PRETTY RIBBON, SO WE CAN MAKE A LITTLE BELT.
YES. NOW, PUT SOME GLUE ON THE TOP, IT'S
PERFECT. SO, HOW DO YOU LIKE THE DOLL?”
Animated hearts surround Maliyah. She covers
her cheeks with her hands.
Maliyah asks, “BUT, WHY DON'T WE ADD EYES AND
A MOUTH?”
Patricia answers, “THESE DOLLS ARE NOT
SUPPOSED TO HAVE FACES. BECAUSE IT CAME
WITH A STORY ABOUT A LITTLE GIRL WHO WAS TOO
IN LOVE WITH HER OWN FACE AND SHE THOUGHT
SHE WAS BETTER THAN OTHER PEOPLE. AND THIS
HELPS US TO REMEMBER TO BE HUMBLE, TO BE
FRIENDLY, TO BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHER PEOPLE.”

JUST PULL IT OFF.
WE'RE GOING TO HAVE
A LITTLE RACE, OKAY?”
