Transcript: Wednesday April 22 - Earth Day
An animation shows a map of the way to the tree house. The tittle of the show reads "That TVO Kids Show from home."
At home, Lucas shows a picture of the Earth and says HAPPY EARTH DAY, TVO KIDS!
THAT'S RIGHT, KIDS.
WELCOME TO MY BLANKET FORT.
YOU GUYS ARE HANGING OUT
WITH LUCAS
ON A VERY IMPORTANT DAY.
NOW, YOU GUYS KNOW THAT
I'M SUPER PASSIONATE
ABOUT THE PLANET.
I KNOW THAT YOU GUYS AT HOME
ARE SUPER PASSIONATE
ABOUT THE PLANET.
SO, WE HAVE SOMEONE TODAY
WHO IS ALSO VERY PASSIONATE
ABOUT THE PLANET.
PLEASE WELCOME TO
THE BLANKET FORT...
WE ARE VERY HONOURED TO HAVE
THE HONOURABLE
LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR,
ELIZABETH DOWDESWELL.
(CHEERING
AND APPLAUSE)
A caption reads "The Honourable Liutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell."
Governor Dowdeswell is in her seventies, with short wavy white hair and wears a bright yellow sweater, a brooch and a pin.
She says HELLO.
HELLO, LUCAS.
HAPPY EARTH DAY,
AND THANK YOU SO MUCH
FOR INVITING ME
TO JOIN YOU AND
ALL YOUR YOUNG VIEWERS
ON THIS
VERY SPECIAL DAY.
Lucas says WELL, IT'S MOST DEFINITELY
OUR HONOUR,
AND YOU'RE RIGHT:
IT IS A SPECIAL DAY.
NOW, WE KNOW THAT
YOU'RE VERY PASSIONATE
ABOUT THE PLANET,
AND WE'RE SO EXCITED
ABOUT THAT.
YOU'RE PASSIONATE
ABOUT ONTARIANS.
WHAT DO YOU WANT
TO SAY TO TVO KIDS
ON EARTH DAY?
Governor Dowdeswell says WELL, YOU KNOW,
FOR 50 YEARS,
YOUNG PEOPLE
ALL OVER THE WORLD
HAVE BEEN CELEBRATING EARTH DAY,
ENCOURAGING US TO CARE
FOR EACH OTHER
AND CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
IN WHICH WE LIVE.
AND I'VE BEEN REALLY FORTUNATE
TO ATTEND EARTH DAY
IN MANY COUNTRIES
AROUND THE WORLD.
BUT HERE
IN ONTARIO,
WE HAVE SO MUCH
TO BE THANKFUL FOR.
WE'VE GOT CLEAN AIR TO BREATHE,
BEAUTIFUL LAKES AND FORESTS,
VERY RICH SOIL THAT ALLOWS US
TO GROW FRESH FOOD,
AND MANY WONDERFUL CREATURES:
BUTTERFLIES, BIRDS, DEER.
YOU'LL NOTICE
I DIDN'T INCLUDE MOSQUITOES.
THEY'RE NOT ONE OF
MY FAVOURITES.
(LAUGHING)
Lucas laughs and says YOU AND ME BOTH.
Governor Dowdeswell says WHAT A SPECIAL PLACE THIS IS.
AND AS LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR,
I'VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY
TO VISIT
SOME OF YOUR ECO-SCHOOLS
AND ALSO, SOME OF YOUR PROJECTS.
FOR EXAMPLE, LIKE YOU,
I GO TO THE ZOO TO LEARN,
AND ONE OF THE REALLY
INTERESTING THINGS I SAW
WAS WHEN CHILDREN
WERE LOOKING AFTER SALMON EGGS
IN AN INCUBATOR
IN THEIR CLASSROOM.
AND THEN, AT
THE RIGHT MOMENT IN TIME,
WHEN THE YOUNG SALMON
WERE JUST OLD ENOUGH,
THEY GOT TO GO TO THE RIVER
AND RELEASE THEM INTO THE RIVER,
INTO THE WILD,
SO THAT THEY COULD BECOME ADULTS
IN NATURE, WHERE THEY BELONG.
THAT WAS A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE.
Lucas says WOW.
Governor Dowdeswell says I ALSO SPENT A SUNDAY MORNING
ON THE BEACHES
OF OUR GREAT LAKES,
JOINING A GROUP
OF YOUNG PEOPLE
AS WE CLEANED UP
GARBAGE.
DO YOU KNOW
HOW MUCH GARBAGE
IS LEFT
ALONG THE LAKES?
IT'S AWFUL.
Lucas says OH, I BET.
Governor Dowdeswell says PLASTICS AND PAPER CUPS
AND DRINK CANS,
ALL THE THINGS
THAT POLLUTE THE WATER.
AND I WAS REMINDED OF
IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER
HOW YOUNG YOU ARE.
WE CAN ALL MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
WE CAN ALL
PICK UP THAT GARBAGE.
Lucas says WHAT A GREAT POINT.
SO, AS YOU KNOW,
THIS YEAR IS
A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT
THAN MOST.
HOW WILL YOU BE
CELEBRATING EARTH DAY
THIS YEAR?
Governor Dowdeswell says SO, THIS YEAR,
I HAVE TO BE CELEBRATING
IN A DIFFERENT WAY.
I CAN'T GO OUT TO PLANT A TREE;
I CAN'T GO OUT
AND VISIT YOUR SCHOOLS.
BUT WHAT I'M GOING TO DO IS
TO GO TO MY MEMORY BOOK
OF PICTURES.
PICTURES OF THE ANIMALS
AT THE ZOO.
OF ENJOYING WALKING
ALONG THE BEACHES
AND OF GOING TO
THE FARM.
AND MOST OF ALL,
REMEMBERING ALL OF
THE YOUNG PEOPLE
THAT I'VE MET.
Lucas says THAT'S SO GREAT.
I'M SO GLAD THAT YOU SHARED THAT
WITH US.
Governor Dowdeswell says AND WE CAN ALSO REACH OUT
TO OUR FRIENDS AND OUR FAMILIES
AND JUST LET THEM KNOW
THAT WE'RE THINKING ABOUT THEM.
WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD
TO THE TIME WHEN
WE'RE GOING TO BE ABLE
TO PLAY TOGETHER AGAIN,
AND HOPE THAT COMES SOON.
Lucas says YES. WE WILL CERTAINLY
HOPE THAT COMES SOON.
THANK YOU FOR
THE POSITIVE WORDS.
IT'S SO GREAT
TO TALK TO YOU TODAY.
I KNOW TVO KIDS
AT HOME
ARE WATCHING THIS
IN AWE OF YOU.
SO, WE'LL SAY GOODBYE
FOR NOW
AND HOPE TO CATCH YOU
ANOTHER TIME SOON.
Governor Dowdeswell says WELL, HAPPY EARTH DAY, EVERYONE.
Lucas says HAPPY EARTH DAY.
NOW, TVO KIDS,
THE FUN DOESN'T STOP,
BECAUSE GUESS WHAT?
IT'S SONG TIME.
SO, WE HAVE LAURA IN
THE BLANKET FORT TO HELP US OUT.
HEY, LAURA.
Laura says HEY, TVO KIDS. HEY, LUCAS.
OKAY. I'M SUPER EXCITED
FOR SONG TIME.
WE HAVE
AN AWESOME EARTH DAY SONG.
SHOULD WE SING IT?
Lucas says TOTALLY.
Laura says OKAY.
HERE GOES.
Laura plays the ukulele and they both sing a song that says HEY, EARTH
WE'RE MISSING YOU TODAY
HEY, EARTH, IT'S YOUR DAY
TO CELEBRATE
HEY, EARTH, WE JUST THOUGHT
WE'D STOP AND SAY
WE LOVE THE TREES AND THE BEES
AND THE LEAVES AND THE SEAS
WE LOVE THE LAKES
AND THE SNAKES
AND THE JUICY PURPLE GRAPES
WE LOVE THE CHERRIES
AND THE BERRIES
AND THE MOUNTAINS
AND THE SKIES
THE VALLEYS AND THE RIVERS
AND THE SUMMER BUTTERFLIES
THANK YOU, EARTH, FOR ALL
THAT YOU BRING
THANK YOU, EARTH,
FOR YOUR EVERYTHING
The song ends.
Lucas says YEAH! THAT WAS TOTALLY AWESOME.
HAPPY EARTH DAY!
Laura says THAT WAS AWESOME.
SEE YOU, TVO KIDS.
Lucas says BYE.
Laura says BYE, LUCAS.
