Transcript: What is a Nebula?
A caption reads "TVO Kids presents."
An animation shows the solar system.
A theme song plays I LIVE ON EARTH I LOOK TO THE SKY SO MUCH WONDER FILLS MY MIND WE ARE SPACE KIDS SPACE KIDS.
A child says WHAT IS A NEBULA?
(music plays)
A girl says WHAT'S THAT?
A thinking face emoji appears.
A boy says IT'S A NEBULA! A NEBULA IS A GIANT CLOUD OF DUST AND GAS IN SPACE.
The girl says SO PRETTY!
The boy says SOME NEBULAE (NEB-U-LEE) COME FROM THE GAS AND DUST THROWN OUT BY THE EXPLOSION OF A DYING STAR.
The girl says BY THE WAY, "NEBULAE." (NEB-U-LEE) IS A FANCY WAY OF SAYING "MORE THAN ONE NEBULA."
The boy says DID YOU KNOW ASTRONOMERS USE SUPER POWERFUL TELESCOPES TO CREATE IMAGES OF DISTANT OBJECTS IN SPACE. THAT'S HOW WE'RE ABLE TO SEE THESE INCREDIBLE IMAGES OF GIANT CLOUDS OF DUST AND GAS.
The girl says THAT'S BEAUTIFUL!
Clips show various nebulae.
The boy says THE DUST AND GASES IN A NEBULA ARE VERY SPREAD OUT, BUT GRAVITY CAN SLOWLY BEGIN TO PULL TOGETHER CLUMPS OF DUST AND GAS. AS THESE CLUMPS GET BIGGER AND BIGGER, THEIR GRAVITY GETS STRONGER AND STRONGER. EVENTUALLY, THE CLUMP OF DUST AND GAS GETS SO BIG THAT IT COLLAPSES FROM ITS OWN GRAVITY. THE COLLAPSE CAUSES THE MATERIAL AT THE CENTER OF THE CLOUD TO HEAT UP-AND THIS HOT CORE IS THE BEGINNING OF A STAR. A STAR IS BORN!
The girl says OOOOH!
The boy says DID YOU KNOW NEBULAE ARE CALLED "STAR NURSERIES"!
The girl says WOW! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT... STARS ARE BORN, LIVE FOR A LONG LONG TIME, THEN DIE!
The boy says ISN'T THAT AMAZING!
The end credits roll.
The song plays I'M ON MY WAY, ON MY WAY TO OUTER SPACE. WE ARE SPACE KIDS.
