Tommy demonstrates each kick.
[Thunking]

Tommy kicks a man-shaped dummy.

IT'S HARD WORK TO PRACTICE

Tommy measures ingredients into a cup.

Tommy’s mother pours the crisp, the mixed ingredients minus the apple slices, into a glass baking pan. Tommy spreads apples on top of the crisp mixture.

ANOTHER LAYER OF CRISP.
LIKE AN APPLE CRISP SANDWICH.
[Oven door shuts]
Tommy says, TIME FOR A TASTE TEST.
[Clank]
Tommy exclaims, I LOVE IT.
Tommy narrates, THE STIRRING
OF THE ASHES CEREMONY, IT'S
PART OF THE MID WINTER CEREMONIES.
Tommy’s father says, YOU'RE
GONNA GO AND OPEN UP
THE STOVE.
YOU'RE GONNA SCOOP AND
THEN TURN IT OVER. OKAY?
[Thunk]
Tommy says, OKAY.
Tommy carefully turns ashes at the bottom of a wood stove.
[Upbeat music plays]
Tommy narrates, THEY USUALLY
TAKE PLACE IN JANUARY BUT IT
DEPENDS ON THE CYCLE OF
THE MOON.
THE STIRRING OF THE ASHES
SYMBOLIZES THE END OF ONE
CYCLE AND THE START OF THE
NEW CYCLE.
IT'S A TIME OF RENEWAL.
WE'RE LIGHTING A FIRE TO START
A NEW CYCLE.
THE REAL CEREMONY HAPPENS
AT THE LONGHOUSE BUT MY DAD
