ARE COMPETING
IN EACH OTHER'S SPORT
FOR THE TITLE
OF ALL-ROUND CHAMPION.

A group of teenagers participate in various winter sports including dog sledding, skiing and snowboarding.
Perdita narrates, TO BE A MASTER SPEED SKATER,
YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE
TO NAVIGATE
TIGHT CORNERS AT SPEED.
A person skates around an indoor ice rink.
Gage says, WHOA, HE'S
GOING REALLY FAST.
Caiyla falls on the ice.
Perida narrates, AND HOPEFULLY NOT
CRASH INTO THE OTHER SKATERS.
Derek yells, OH!
Tristen falls on the ice.
Adam says, THIS IS TAKING FOREVER.
Derek says, I THINK ADAM
COULD BE A LITTLE BIT
MORE OUTGOING AS A COACH.
He tells Adam, YOU HAVE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY
HERE TO SHARE SOMETHING,
SHARE SOMETHING YOU LOVE.
Adam says, THERE YOU GO, CAIYLA!
THAT'S GOOD, GAGE.
Caiyla and Gage skate with their knees bent and arms behind them.
Adam says, LIKE THIS, ELLYN.
Adam demonstrates how to speed skate.
He says, YEAH,
THERE YOU GO! THAT'S BETTER.
Ellyn says, OH, MY GOSH.
(Triumphant music plays)

Text reads, TVOkids Presents, All Round Champion.
A coach bus travels down a road.
Evan says, TODAY'S
THE LAST DAY OF TRAINING.
HOW DOES EVERYBODY FEEL?
Ellyn says, I FEEL LIKE I STILL
HAVE SO MUCH TO LEARN.
Sloane says, EVERYBODY'S REALLY TIRED.
THIS IS A PHYSICALLY
AND MENTALLY
HARD AND TOUGH COMPETITION.
Sloane speaks outside. Text reads, Sloane, ice climbing, 14.
On the bus, Gage says, IT HURTS TO LIFT UP MY LEG.
I HAVE TO HELP IT UP A BIT.
IT'S WEIRD.
Outside, Gage says, I'M NOT GOING TO DO MUCH TODAY.
I THINK THE COMPETITION
IS PRETTY MUCH NARROWED DOWN
TO ONE PERSON.
I THINK THAT'S EVAN.
I THINK EVAN'S
GOING TO TAKE THE BELT,
BUT WE'RE JUST GOING
TO SEE HOW IT ALL ROLLS OUT.
Text reads, Gage, freestyle skiing, 14. At the ice rink, the athletes face Derek, Perdita and Adam.
Perdita says, ATHLETES,
ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO BE GREAT
ON THIS LAST DAY OF TRAINING,
BUT I'VE GOT TO BE HONEST.
Text reads, Perdita Felicien, Olympian and world champion hurdler. Perdita has long black hair and wears a turquoise coat.
Perdita says, I FEEL LIKE
A LOT OF YOU ARE SENSING
IT'S THE END OF THE COMPETITION.
Rajan yawns.
Perdita says, YOU'RE KIND
OF JUST COASTING THROUGH
THE REST
OF OUR DAYS TOGETHER.
I DON'T SEE THE INTENSITY
OR SENSE OF URGENCY THAT
I SAW IN THE EARLIER WEEKS.
CAIYLA,
YOU'RE A FIGURE SKATER.
YOU HAVE A BUILT-IN ABILITY
THAT NOBODY HERE HAS THIS WEEK.
WHERE'S THE FIRE
IN YOUR BELLY?
YOU SHOULD
BE TEARING UP THIS ICE.
I WANT TO SEE THAT FROM YOU.
Caiyla nods.
She says, OKAY?
Perdita says, GAGE.
Gage nods. Sloane and Caitlyn use crutches.
Perdita says, I FEEL LIKE YOU KNOW YOU HAVE
AN OPPORTUNITY TO WIN IT ALL,
BUT I STILL FEEL LIKE
YOU'RE BEING A LITTLE SAFE.
GET AFTER IT.
GO AFTER IT.
Gage says, I WILL.
Perdita says, THE REST OF YOU,
IF YOU START BANKING IT IN NOW,
THEN YOU ARE SAYING
TO YOURSELF, AS AN ATHLETE,
WHEN THINGS KINDA GET HARD,
OR I FEEL LIKE
I CAN'T WIN SOMETHING,
YOU GIVE YOURSELF
THE PERMISSION NOT TO TRY HARD.
AND IF YOU DO THAT NOW HERE,
YOU'LL DO
THAT WHEN YOU LEAVE HERE.
YOUR HABITS
ARE YOUR CHARACTER,
AS ATHLETES,
BUT ESPECIALLY AS PEOPLE.
I'M SAYING THIS TO YOU
BECAUSE I'VE TRULY BEEN THERE.
IN 2010, INDOOR SEASON,
I COULDN'T WIN
A RACE TO SAVE MY LIFE.
I REMEMBER CALLING
MY HUSBAND SAYING
I'M NOT GOING TO THE WORLDS,
AND I WAS EMBARRASSED
TO SHOW UP
AT THE WORLDS NOT WINNING.
SO MY HUSBAND
SAID TO ME ON THE PHONE,
"IF YOU DON'T GO TO WORLDS,
THEN YOU'RE JUST SAYING
TO YOURSELF
THAT YOU CAN QUIT WHENEVER."
AND HE'S LIKE
"I DON'T KNOW THAT PERDITA."
SO I WENT TO THE WORLDS,
EMBARRASSED, I'LL BE HONEST,
I GOT ON THAT PLANE EMBARRASSED,
AND I NEVER WANTED
TO FEEL THAT FEELING AGAIN.
I'M A FIGHTER.
ALL THOSE GIRLS
THAT I COULDN'T BEAT ALL SEASON?
FIRE KICKED THEIR BUTT.
Caiyla smiles.
Perdita says, IN THE FINAL, I GOT
A SILVER MEDAL AT THE WORLDS.
IF I HAD STAYED HOME, AND LICKED
MY WOUNDS, AND DIDN'T TRY,
ALL THE THINGS THAT I GAINED
THERE WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN.
WHEN YOU LEAVE HERE, YOU WILL
BE PROUD, I PROMISE YOU.
Derek says, I AM ABSOLUTELY ON
BOARD WITH EVERYTHING YOU SAID.
TODAY YOU REALLY HAVE
TO THROW YOURSELF INTO THIS.
THERE'S NO BEING CAUTIOUS.
YOU'VE GOT TO
PUSH IT TO THE EDGE.
TAKE THE CONFIDENCE THAT
YOU GUYS HAVE FROM EACH ONE
OF YOUR INDIVIDUAL SPORTS,
AND WE'RE GOING TO MAKE
YOU GUYS GO FAST. ALRIGHT?
Perdita says, ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.
LET THE TIGER OUT TODAY.
LET IT OUT.
Gage says, OH, YEAH.
Perdita says, ALRIGHT. LET'S GO.
(Cheering)
(Applause)
Adam says, WE'RE ON TO
THE LAST DAY OF TRAINING.
THEY'VE GOT
TO LEARN THAT THE SPORT
IS REALLY ANYBODY'S GAME.
Text reads, Adam, speed skating, 15. On the ice, the participating athletes stand wearing their helmets and skates. Adam stands with Derek.
Derek says, TODAY IS ALL ABOUT TURNS.
DRILL NUMBER ONE WITH A BUCKET.
YOU'RE GOING TO
GET IN A LOW POSITION,
AND WHAT YOU WANT TO DO IS
ACTUALLY PUSH DOWN AND FORWARD,
DOWN AND FORWARD.
Derek sits on a bucket on the ice. He skates while seated.
Adam says, USING THE BUCKET IT
FORCES YOU TO PUSH SIDEWAYS
BECAUSE PUSHING BACK YOU CAN'T
DO IT BECAUSE YOU'RE SITTING.
Adam skates on the bucket.
Ellyn says, THAT'S PROBABLY ABOUT AS
FAST AS I GO WITHOUT A BUCKET.
Derek skates back to the athletes. He spins to a stop on the bucket.
Derek says, LOOKS EASY
BUT IT'S NOT.
IT'S THE SECRET
TO SPEED SKATING.
IF YOU GUYS CAN
GET THIS, LOOK OUT.
Adam says, SO I'LL BE ON
THE BUCKET SHOWING YOU GUYS.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS,
I CAN TRY TO DEMONSTRATE AGAIN.
Adam and the other athletes sit on buckets. Derek stands.
Derek says, LET'S TRY IT.
The athletes start skating on their buckets.
Ellyn says, OH, GOSH, YEAH.
(Upbeat music plays)
The athletes skate towards Adam. Adam skates backwards on his bucket. Rajan skates close to Caiyla.
Caiyla says, BE CAREFUL, BRO!
Ellyn says, OH, NO!
EVERYBODY'S FASTER THAN ME!
Adam says, TRISTAN,
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A HOME BASE.
THIS FOOT'LL STAY HERE,
AND YOU WANNA BRING IT BACK.
Adam demonstrates how to keep one leg in the same position while using the other to move .
Tristan says, OKAY.
Adam says, AND THEN SAME THING
FOR THE OTHER SIDE, OKAY?
Tristan says, YEAH.
Adam says, BRING YOUR
FEET BACK TO YOUR BASE.
Adam watches Evan skate on his bucket.
Adam says, THERE YOU GO.
Derek says, ADAM IS REALLY STARTING
TO FIND HIS COACHING LEGS.
HE'S GIVING THEM
SOME GOOD INFORMATION.
Adam says, PUSH,
AND BRING IT BACK TOGETHER.
PUSH.
Derek says, I THINK THAT'S
GOING TO MAKE THIS A LOT BETTER
AND BRING
THE GROUP EVEN CLOSER TOGETHER.
Text reads, Derek Parra, Olympic champion.
Adam says, PUSH, BACK TO HOME BASE.
Adam demonstrates his skating push and Ellyn copies him.
Adam says, THERE YOU GO!
Ellyn says, THANK YOU, ADAM!
Derek says, NICE. THERE YOU GO. HA.
Adam says, EVERYBODY'S LOOKING REALLY GOOD.
Derek says, YOU GOT IT!
Evan says, THIS IS VERY FUN.
Evan spins on his bucket.
Derek says, I CAN HONESTLY TELL YOU,
I'VE BEEN COACHING FOR YEARS,
AND YOU ARE THE FIRST GROUP
OF ATHLETES THAT
HAS GOTTEN IT SO QUICKLY.
Adam says, THAT WAS AMAZING, GUYS,
I'M REALLY PROUD OF YOU GUYS.
Derek says, YEAH. PERDITA'S SPEECH REALLY
HELPED OUT, LIT A FIRE, HUH?
(Applause)
(Cheering)
Rajan says, GREAT JOB, EVERYONE.
Derek says, THAT'S AWESOME.
SO WE'RE GOING TO TAKE THAT
TECHNIQUE OF THE PUSH, AND PUT
IT INTO A TURN DRILL NOW.
BUCKET RIGHT HERE,
ELBOW AT MY SIDE.
HERE WE GO.
Derek squats into the speed skating position with his left hand on his bucket. He skates around a circle in the ice.
He says, CROSSOVERS ARE PRETTY
INTIMIDATING TO LEARN,
ESPECIALLY IN
A VERY SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME.
Evan skates the circle with his bucket.
Derek says, THREE, FOUR.
THERE YOU GO!
Evan starts around the circle again.
Derek says, THE INTRODUCTION TO
THE BUCKETS IN DIFFERENT DRILLS
IS GOING TO HELP THEM,
BUT THEY'VE GOT TO COMMIT.
Caiyla skates with her bucket.
Derek says, SWING IT BACK. THERE YOU GO!
KEEP YOUR SHOULDERS LEVEL.
KEEP GOING. THERE!
KEEP GOING. PUSH AND CROSS.
CROSS ALL THE WAY THROUGH.
THERE YOU GO.
Derek skates with Estella and her bucket.
He says, THEY'VE GOT
TO GET RID OF THAT FEAR
AND REALLY FOCUS ON EXECUTING.
Derek faces the athletes.
He says. YESTERDAY,
YOU COULDN'T MAKE ANY SPEED.
YOU'RE MAKING SPEED NOW.
I HOPE YOU GUYS FEEL THAT.
Gage says, AWESOME.
Tristin and Estella high five.
Adam says, ESTELLA, AWESOME.
Derek says, ALRIGHT?
NICE.
Estella and Gage fist bump.
Gage says, GOOD JOB.
Estella says, THANK YOU.
Gage says, WHEN YOU DID IT TODAY,
YOU'RE GAINING SPEED TOO.
YESTERDAY YOU
WERE HAVING A HARD TIME
TRYING TO KEEP YOURSELF GOING.
Estella says, YEAH.
Derek says, DON'T WORRY ABOUT GOING FAST.
DO IT RIGHT. THERE YOU GO.
Tristan skates the circle with his bucket.
Gage says, I'VE GOT TO STOP BEING CAREFUL,
AND I HAVE TO REALLY
START PUSHING MYSELF TO
GET THIS NUMBER ONE SPOT
BECAUSE I WANT IT AND I NEED IT.
Estella says, YEAH, PERDITA'S
TALK REALLY INSPIRED US.
Gage says, THAT TALK, TO ME,
NOW I'M REALIZING YOU'VE GOT TO
GO AS HARD AS YOU CAN,
NO MATTER WHAT.
Estella says, YEAH, NO MATTER WHAT.
YEAH.
Derek counts, TWO, THREE…
Evan skates the circle with Derek.
Gage says, THAT'S
THE PRESSURE ON ME RIGHT NOW,
I REALLY WANT
TO CATCH UP TO EVAN.
Estella says, YEAH, YOU NEED TO CATCH UP.
Gage says, I NEED TO START
PUSHING THE HARDEST,
20 TIMES HARDER
THAN I'VE EVER PUSHED BEFORE.
Estella says, YEAH.
Gage says, IT'S NOW OR NEVER.
Estella says, YEAH.
Gage says, AND IT'S A NOW OR NEVER STANCE
FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.
Estella says, YEAH.
Gage says, WHEN I FEEL DOWN,
I'M HARD ON MYSELF
I DON'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING.
THAT THING THAT PERDITA
SAID TO ME IS GOING TO
STICK WITH ME
FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE,
AND I'M GOING TO
BE USING THAT 24/7, NON-STOP.
Text reads, Gage, freestyle skiing, 14.
Gage says, PUSHING MY HARDEST
AND AS HARD AS I CAN GO.
The athletes sit on their buckets.
Derek says, THAT'S GOOD.
VERY NICE.
I THINK YOU GUYS
MADE SOME BIG STEPS TODAY.
WE'RE GOING TO GIVE YOU
A LITTLE GRADUATION TEST HERE.
WE'RE GOING TO
PUT YOU ON THE TRACK.
Evan says, I'M ALWAYS LOOKING
AT MY COMPETITORS IN TRAINING.
I WANT TO PUSH
MYSELF TO DO THE BEST I CAN.
Text reads, Evan, X-Country Skiing, 14. Evan skates on the track on the ice.
Derek says, OH, YEAH!
HA-HA! I LIKE IT, EVAN!
Evan says, TO DO THAT, I HAVE TO BE
BETTER THAN
THE OTHER COMPETITORS.
Derek says, NICE AND LOW.
Derek crouches lower to face the skaters on the track.
He says, LOW. NICE AND LOW.
Evan says, I'D CERTAINLY
SAY I FEEL PRESSURE.
ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN
THAT COULD PUT ME OUT
OF THE COMPETITION,
WHICH WOULD BE TERRIBLE.
On a laptop, Evan says, HI, MOM.
LONG TIME NO SEE.
A person says, HEY, BUDDY! HOW ARE YOU DOING?
In a video call is a woman with short blond hair. Text reads, Darlene, Evan’s mom.
Evan says, GREAT!
Darlene says, HEY, YOUR HAIR'S GETTING LONG.
Evan says, I KNOW, YEAH.
IT NEEDS A CUT.
Darlene says, IT DEFINITELY NEEDS A CUT.
Evan says, THIS WEEK WE'RE
DOING SPEED SKATING.
Darlene says COOL. I ALWAYS
WANTED TO TRY THAT.
Evan says, THE COMPETITION
IS GETTING A LITTLE MORE
HEATED AS WE NEAR THE END..
Darlene says, OKAY.
Evan says, ...SO I REALLY HAVE TO
DO WELL IN THIS TODAY,
GET A GOOD, SOLID LEAD.
Darlene says, DEAR, JUST TRY YOUR HARDEST,
AND HAVE FUN,
AND SOAK IN THE EXPERIENCE.
I THINK YOU'RE GOING
TO DO FANTASTIC TOMORROW.
Evan says, ALRIGHT, THANK YOU.
Darlene says, ANY TIME, BUDDY.
Evan says, OKAY.
Darlene says, CALL HOME MORE OFTEN.
GOOD LUCK TOMORROW!
Evan says, THANK YOU!
Evan closes the laptop. Back on the rink, he speed skates. Caitlyn and Sloane watch from bleachers.
Caitlyn says, EVAN'S BY FAR FASTER.
Sloane says, GAGE STILL IS PLAYING IT SAFE.
Gage catches up to Ellyn on the rink.
Gage says, RIGHT HERE.
Ellyn says, OH, MY GOSH.
Ellyn sighs and stands from her crouch.
She says, YOUR LEGS GET SO TIRED.
Gage says, TRY TO REALLY PUSH THAT HIP IN,
LIKE, REALLY GO IN LIKE THAT.
Ellyn says, YEAH.
Ellyn returns to her skating position.
Gage says, IT'S SO MUCH EASIER AS
SOON AS YOU PICK UP SOME SPEED.
(Rock music plays)
Tristan speeds around the track.
He says, OH, MY.
On a turn, Tristan stumbles and falls.
Derek says, OH, LOOK OUT!
FEET UP!
With his feet up, Tristan slides into a padded wall.
Derek says, YEAH!
Adam says, TRISTAN'S
WORKING REALLY HARD OUT THERE.
IT'S JUST SOMETHING
HASN'T CLICKED IN THIS SPORT.
Text reads, Adam, speed skating, 15.
Adam says, HE HASN'T REALLY GOT
THE TECHNIQUE, BUT I FEEL LIKE
HE MIGHT BE
ABLE TO DO IT HERE.
Perdita says, CAIYLA! HOW'S IT GOING?
Perdita joins Caiyla on a bench outside the rink.
Caiyla says, IT'S GOING GOOD.
Perdita asks, DO YOU FEEL FIRED UP
AT ALL BY WHAT I SAID?
Caiyla says, YES, I FELT SUPER INSPIRED.
I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU THOUGH.
Perdita says, TELL ME.
Caiyla asks, HOW DID YOU GET PAST YOUR LOWEST
POINT WHEN YOU WENT TO WORLDS?
Perdita says, OH, UM...
I THINK I FOCUSED ON
WHAT KIND OF ATHLETE
THAT I WANTED TO BE.
MORE THAN ANYTHING,
I ALWAYS FELT LIKE
I ALWAYS WANT
TO WALK OFF THE TRACK
AND FEEL PROUD ABOUT
WHATEVER I'VE PUT DOWN,
AND SO IF I LOOK BACK ON
A COMPETITION, AND I DIDN'T WIN,
BUT I KNEW I DID MY BEST,
THAT WAS GOLD FOR ME.
YOU'VE GOTTA FIGHT
YOUR WAY ONTO THIS PODIUM.
I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT.
YOU GOT IT?
Caiyla nods.
She says, YEAH.
Perdita says, ALRIGHT, GIRL.
GET BACK TO TRAINING.
Caiyla says, YOU'VE GOT IT.
Caiyla steps onto the ice.
Derek says, TIME TO SHOCK THE WORLD!
Perdita narrates, WITH THE INDIVIDUAL TIME TRIAL,
THE FIGHT
TO THE PODIUM BEGINS NOW.
THIS WILL RANK THEM GOING
INTO THE COMPETITION TOMORROW.
IT'S TIME TO LAY
IT ALL ON THE LINE.
Derek says, OKAY, SO RAJ,
FOUR AND A HALF LAPS.
WE'LL COUNT YOU DOWN.
A singer sings, I WILL HOLD ON.
NO MORE.
Each of the athletes gets in a starting position for their individual races.
Derek says, BEHIND THAT LINE.
The singer sings, I GOTTA LET GO.
Caiyla stands at the starting line.
She says, COOL.
Derek asks, READY?
Ellyn stands in the starting position.
The singer sings, AND WALK OUT THAT DOOR.
The other athletes get in their positions.
The singer sings, CAUSE NOTHING CAN
(indiscernible) ME.
(Whistle)
The athletes skate their individual races.
The singer sings, I THINK I'M MORE THAN FINE
YEAH, I KNOW I'M READY
TO FIGHT.
Evan picks up speed.
Derek says, GOOD START.
Adam says, YEAH, HE'S LOOKING GOOD.
The singer sings, NEVER TURN BACK THE NIGHT,
NO GOING BACKWARDS.
Derek says, OOH, SHE'S CROSSING
OVER. LOOK AT THAT.
Ellyn crosses one foot over the other as she skates.
Derek says, THIS IS REALLY
GOOD SKATING FOR HER.
Adam says, LOOK AT THE FOCUS.
LOOK AT HER EYES.
SHE IS FOCUSED.
The singer signs, I THINK I'M READY,
I'M THINK I'M MORE THAN FINE.
YEAH, I KNOW I'M READY,
TO FIGHT.
Tristan leans to the left as he turns.
Derek says, HE'S LEANING IN THE TURNS.
HE'S TRYING TO
LEAN IN THE TURNS.
OH, A LITTLE BIT OF A...
Tristan stumbles and falls.
Derek says, OH! GET UP!
Tristan crashes into a padded wall.
Derek says, OOH!
(Thudding)
Derek says, OUCH, OUCH, OUCH.
ALRIGHT. HE'S UP!
Adam says, THERE HE GOES.
KEEP GOING. KEEP GOING.
Rajan stumbles and falls.
Derek says, OH, THERE HE GOES!
Rajan slides across the ice.
Adam says, GET BACK UP, RAJ!
Rajan bumps into a padded wall but pulls himself up.
Derek says, THERE YOU GO.
KEEP GOING.
The singer sings, THIS IS THE TIME.
Other athletes skate down the rink.
The singer sings, THIS IS THE TIME.
Derek says, KEEP TRYING.
Adam says, GOOD JOB.
Derek says, ALL GUTS, ALL GLORY.
THAT'S WHAT YOU
WENT FOR, SO NICE JOB.
Tristan nods.
He says, THANK YOU
.
Adam says, GOOD JOB.
The singer sings, THIS IS THE TIME.
(Dramatic music plays)
In a time lapse, clouds pass through the sky. The athletes carry their bags to the coach bus.
Gage says, IT'S COMPETITION DAY.
I'M NOT SUPER STOKED ABOUT THAT.
I REALLY WANT
ONE MORE DAY OF TRAINING
TO GET MY
CONFIDENCE UP FOR THOSE TURNS.
Text reads, Gage, freestyle skiing, 14.
Estella says, LET'S SAY SOME PEOPLE
FALL IN OUR RACE TODAY.
IS THERE A WAY
TO AVOID THE CARNAGE?
Adam says, IF YOU'RE RIGHT BEHIND THEM,
AND YOU SEE THEM SLIPPING,
CUT INTO THE INSIDE.
Outside the bus Gage says, YESTERDAY,
AS SOON AS I SAW TRISTAN FALL,
I WAS BEING
REALLY CAUTIOUS, REALLY NERVOUS.
On the ice, Tristan falls.
Derek says, OH! GET UP! OW!
OW! OUCH, OUCH, OUCH.
On the bus, Gage says, I THOUGHT
YOU BROKE YOUR LEG.
Tristan says, I THINK EVERYBODY
THOUGHT I BROKE MY LEG.
Gage says, I WAS LIKE...
THAT COULD BE ME
IF I DON'T TONE
IT BACK A LITTLE BIT,
SO I TONED IT
BACK A TOUCH, I THINK.
Elsewhere, he says, THAT REALLY SET ME BACK
FOR MY CONFIDENCE LEVEL,
SO HOPEFULLY TODAY I CAN
CLEAR EVERYTHING OUT OF MY MIND,
JUST GET CONFIDENCE
AROUND THOSE CORNERS,
TRYING TO GET NUMBER ONE SPOT.
(Triumphant music plays)
Text reads, speed skating, the competition.
(Cheers)
(Applause)
Adam says, THESE RACES
WILL BE THEIR FIRST TIME
BEING IN A GROUP,
SINCE THE BASICS ON
ROLLER SKATES,
WHEN YOU KIND OF HAD THAT.
HOPEFULLY, NO ONE GETS HURT.
Outside, it snows as the athletes walk off the bus. In the ice rink, they walk together wearing their skates, helmets, safety glasses and skin tight race suits.
Tristan says, A LOT
OF PEOPLE SAID I COULD WIN THIS,
BUT IT'S GOING
TO BE A LITTLE
BIT OF A CHALLENGE
BECAUSE OF GAGE AND EVAN.
THEY'RE DEFINITELY
MY BIGGEST COMPETITION.
Evan says, WE ARE ALL FRIENDS,
BUT THIS IS A COMPETITION,
AND I REALLY
WANT TO DO WELL.
Rajan says, I'M NOT TOO CONCERNED
ABOUT THE OVERALL LEADER-BOARD
RIGHT NOW,
AND I'M JUST HERE TO REPRESENT.
I'M GOING TO BRING
THE HEAT TO THE ICE,
AND TRY
AND WHIZ AROUND THAT TRACK.
The athletes step onto the ice.
Sloane says, WHOA!
Caitlyn says, LOOKING
LIKE REAL SPEED SKATERS!
Derek says, LOOK AT THIS!
Sloane says, VERY FANCY!
Caiyla says, COMPETITION DAY,
I HAVE MY SPARKLE,
LIKE MY ALTER EGO
SPARKLE ON,
SO I'M GOING TO BRING SPARKLE
TO THE COMPETITION TODAY.
Text reads, Caiyla, figure skating, 13.
Perdita says, ATHLETES,
WELCOME TO THE SHORT TRACK
SPEED SKATING COMPETITION.
Perdita stands between Adam and Derek. She wears a green shirt under a black coat.
Perdita says, THIS IS HOW IT WORKS.
YOU WILL RACE 500 METERS,
WHICH IS 4 ½ LAPS
AROUND THE TRACK IN
ELIMINATION STYLE RACING.
WE'LL HAVE TWO HEATS.
THE TOP TWO FROM EACH HEAT
ADVANCE TO OUR
FOUR PERSON FINAL.
Text reads, the competition. Below, is text that reads, heat 1, and beside that, heat 2. Below are graphics of four speed skaters under heat 1 and three under heat 2. Two skaters are taken from each heat and added to text that appears and reads, final heat.
Perdita says, BY THE END OF THE DAY,
ONE OF YOU WILL HAVE A SHINY
NEW GOLD MEDAL,
AND MAYBE MOST IMPORTANTLY,
BRAGGING RIGHTS TO
FASTEST PERSON ON ICE.
Adam says, MINUS ME.
Perdita says, WELL...
(Laughter)
Derek says, MINUS ME.
Perdita says, TRUE!
The athletes say, OOH!
Perdita says, I LIKE IT!
OKAY.
Derek says, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT
COULD HAPPEN IN THE SPORT
OF SPEED SKATING,
ESPECIALLY IN A 500 METER.
BASED ON YOUR OWN SKILL
AND HOW YOU FEEL ON THE ICE,
YOU SHOULD STRATEGIZE
FOR YOUR BEST OUTCOME.
Perdita says, COACH ADAM, I LOVE HEATS.
I USED TO GO WIRE
TO WIRE AS HARD AS I COULD,
BUT IS THAT
THE RIGHT STRATEGY HERE?
Adam says, IF YOU'RE IN FIRST OR SECOND,
AND YOU'RE IN A SPOT TO MOVE
ON AND ADVANCE TO THE FINALS,
I WOULDN'T ADVISE
PUSHING YOURSELF REALLY HARD,
JUST FOR THE FACT THAT IF YOU
FALL, YOU'RE OUT OF THE FINALS.
Perdita says, YEAH, THIS REMINDS
ME OF THE HURDLES.
YOU HAVE TO STAY ON YOUR FEET.
Derek laughs.
Perdita says, ALRIGHT, ARE YOU READY?
The athletes say, YEAH!
(Cheering)
(Applause)
(Dramatic music plays)
Perdita narrates, AFTER THE TIME TRIALS,
THE FIRST TEAM IS GAGE,
CAIYLA, ESTELLA, AND RAJAN.
Text reads, 500m, heat 1. Pictures of the athletes in the first heat are displayed in their order listed and a graphic of their sport.
Perdita narrates, IT'S BEEN A ROUGH WEEK FOR GAGE,
FROM HIS DOG DYING
TO LOSING HIS DRIVE.
BUT NOW,
HE HAS HIS EYES ON THE PRIZE.
Gage says, GETTING NUMBER ONE,
BEING THE TOP DOG
TODAY WOULD BE THE BEST POSSIBLE
THING THAT COULD HAPPEN TODAY.
Text reads, Gage, freestyle skiing, 14.
Perdita narrates, CAIYLA, OUR FIGURE SKATER,
HAS LEARNED
SHE HAS TO WORK EVEN HARDER
TO TRANSFORM
HERSELF INTO A SPEED SKATER.
Caiyla says, I'M DOING IT FOR MYSELF.
Text reads, Caiyla, figure skating, 13.
Caiyla says, IF I DO THE BEST
I CAN DO FOR MYSELF,
THEN I'M HAPPY.
Perdita narrates, ESTELLA
HAS YET TO DO A CROSSOVER,
BUT FOR HER,
IT'S NOW OR NEVER.
Estella says, I OBVIOUSLY WANT TO PODIUM
SO I'M GOING TO TRY MY HARDEST,
BE THE MOST
AGGRESSIVE THAT I CAN,
LEAVE IT ALL
OUT ON THE TRACK.
Text reads, Estella, ski jumping, 13.
Perdita narrates, RAJAN,
WHILE HE'S NOT THE FASTEST,
IN SPEED SKATING,
ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN.
Rajan says, I'M DEFINITELY NERVOUS.
I'M GOING TO BE
AT THE BACK OF THE PACK,
BUT I'M EXCITED TO DO SOME
CATCHING UP, AND SEE IF I CAN
SNAG A SPOT IN THE FINALS,
AND MAYBE EVEN PODIUM.
Text reads, Rajan, curling, 14. On the ice, Rajan stumbles.
He says, OH, MY GOSH!
Adam says, LET'S GO!
Derek says, THIS IS EXCITING.
TWO DAYS IS NOT A LOT
OF TIME TO GRASP ALL THIS…
Adam says, NO.
Derek says, …THEN TO PUT IT
IN A RACE SITUATION.
LITERALLY, A CRASH COURSE
IN SPEED SKATING.
Adam says, YEAH, YEAH.
Derek chuckles. Rajan, Estella, Caiyla and Gage stands on the ice.
Perdita narrates, THE TOP TWO ATHLETES
WILL ADVANCE TO THE FINAL.
NOW IT'S ALL UP TO THEM.
Perdita stands in the bleachers.
She says, TO THE START!
The athletes of the first heat approach a starting point.
Derek says, I’M A LITTLE EXCITED FOR THIS.
Adam says, REALLY EXCITED.
Perdita says, READY...
The athletes get in a starting position.
(Whistle)
The athletes take off.
(Cheers)
(Applause)
Perdita cheers, LET'S GO!
LET'S GO! LET'S GO!
Derek says, IT'S A GOOD START.
OH, LOOK AT GAGE.
Gage pulls ahead.
Derek says, GAGE SEEMS TO HAVE GOT
THE BUTTERFLIES OUT, HUH?
Caitlyn cheers, WAY TO START IT!
Sloane cheers, GO, GAGE!
Gage skates around a turn.
Sloane says, WOO, GAGE IS FLYING.
HE'S WAY AHEAD.
Adam says, GO, RAJ, LOOKS
LIKE HE'S GAINING ON CAIYLA.
Derek says, OH, THIS COULD BE A RACE.
Estella skates behind Rajan in fourth place. Caiyla follows Gage in second.
Derek says, YEAH, SHE'S FIGHTING.
LOOK AT THAT.
Caitlyn says, COME ON, RAJ!
Sloane cheers, GO! YOU'VE GOT IT!
Caitlyn says, COME ON, ESTELLA!
YEAH, KEEP PUSHING!
(Cheering)
Derek says, KEEP THOSE FEET TOGETHER.
Caitlyn says, YEAH, LET'S GO!
Perdita says, LAST LAP!
Adam says, YOU CAN DO IT, RAJ!
Derek says, NICE SAVE.
KEEP GOING. COME ON.
Caitlyn cheers, YEAH, YOU'VE GOT IT!
KEEP PUSHING!
Sloane cheers, COME ON!
(Cheering)
Gage skates around a turn.
Derek says, GAGE MAKES IT THROUGH.
Perdita says, GAGE IS THE WINNER OF HEAT ONE.
CAIYLA PROCURES SECOND PLACE.
GOOD JOB, RAJ.
Estella keeps skating.
Gasping, she says, I CAN DO IT.
Perdita says, GOOD JOB, ESTELLA.
Estella says, I WAS REALLY,
REALLY HOPING TO CROSSOVER.
I JUST TRIED TO SURVIVE,
AND SO TRYING TO
SURVIVE MEANT NOT CROSSING OVER.
Text reads, Estella, ski jumping, 13.
Gage says, GOOD JOB.
Rajan says, GREAT JOB, GUYS.

SHOUT-OUTS TO GIVE,
AND THESE ARE TIED TO CHARACTER.
Derek says, AT THE BEGINNING
OF THE WEEK, I TALKED ABOUT TWO
CHARACTERISTICS
THAT I THOUGHT WERE REALLY
IMPORTANT IN BEING A CHAMPION.
ONE WAS MINDING THE GAP,
HAVING THE AWARENESS
TO KNOW WHERE YOU ARE NOW,
AND WHERE
YOU WANT TO BE.
THIS ATHLETE CAME
TO THE ICE EVERY DAY
WITH A GOAL IN THEIR MIND,
AND WORKED ON IT DILIGENTLY,
AND AT THE TIME OF COMPETITION
WAS ABLE TO EXECUTE IT.
SO MY FIRST SHOUT-OUT
AWARD GOES TO, ELLYN.
(Cheering)
(Applause)
Ellyn smiles.
Derek says, IT WAS SO
GREAT AS A COACH TO SEE
THOSE CROSSOVER IN UNDER
PRESSURE IN COMPETITION.
AWESOME.

I SAW OUT TALKING TO THE OTHERS,
GIVING SOME ADVICE, TRYING
TO RAISE THE GROUP AS A WHOLE.

LIGHT A FIRE
UNDER YOU FOR NEXT WEEK.

POINTS FOR MAKING THE FINAL.

YOU KILLED IT THIS WEEK,
SO CONGRATULATIONS FOR YOUR
FOURTH PLACE IN THE FINALS:
10 POINTS!
Caiyla smiles.
(Cheering)
(Applause)
Perdita says, TO THE REST OF YOU
WHO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED
THE COMPETITION THIS WEEK,
FIVE POINTS FOR YOU.
(Applause)

POSSIBLE WITHOUT YOUR COACHES,
AND ADAM,
YOU CARED HOW EVERYBODY DID.
YOU HAVE A WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE
THAT YOU SHARED. GOOD STUFF.
(Cheers)

I PULLED IT OFF THIS WEEK.
Gage speaks facing a microphones.
He says, I HAD A REALLY,
REALLY ROUGH START TO THE WEEK.
FOR ME, PERSONALLY, I THINK
I NEED TO BRING PEOPLE UP
BEFORE I BRING MYSELF UP, AND I
THINK I DID THAT THIS WEEK.
Evan says, I THINK I COULD HAVE DONE
A LITTLE BETTER
IN THE COMPETITION.
Evan speaks facing a different row of microphones.
He says, IT WASN'T MY BEST RACE.
Tristan says, WHAT DROVE ME
TO JUST REALLY PUSH IT
IS TO GET
THE TECHNIQUE RIGHT,
AND THEN GET, JUST KEEP
WORKING ON IT AND IMPROVE.
Tristan speaks to a different row of microphones.
Derek says, I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED
BY THE AMOUNT OF FOCUS
THAT EACH OF THE ATHLETES HAD.
Derek speaks to the same row of microphones as Evan.
He says, THE INTENSITY WAS HIGH,
AND IT MEANT SOMETHING,
SO THAT WAS AWESOME TO SEE.
Adam says, IT WAS REALLY OUTSTANDING
TO SEE THAT DEREK
WAS REALLY
NOT ONLY FOCUSED ON GENERAL
SPEED SKATING,
BUT REALLY ABOUT LIFE.
Adam speaks to the same row of microphones as Evan and Derek.
Ellyn says, I THINK IT WAS REALLY
COOL REALIZING THAT,
AND BEING BRAVE,
AND CONFIDENT, AND BOLD,

GOING REALLY FAST.

Perida narrates, AND HOPEFULLY NOT
CRASH INTO THE OTHER SKATERS.
Derek yells, OH!
Tristen falls on the ice.
Adam says, THIS IS TAKING FOREVER.
Derek says, I THINK ADAM
COULD BE A LITTLE BIT
MORE OUTGOING AS A COACH.
He tells Adam, YOU HAVE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY
HERE TO SHARE SOMETHING,
SHARE SOMETHING YOU LOVE.
Adam says, THERE YOU GO, CAIYLA!
THAT'S GOOD, GAGE.
Caiyla and Gage skate with their knees bent and arms behind them.

Evan says, TODAY'S
THE LAST DAY OF TRAINING.
HOW DOES EVERYBODY FEEL?
Ellyn says, I FEEL LIKE I STILL
HAVE SO MUCH TO LEARN.
Sloane says, EVERYBODY'S REALLY TIRED.
THIS IS A PHYSICALLY
AND MENTALLY
HARD AND TOUGH COMPETITION.
Sloane speaks outside. Text reads, Sloane, ice climbing, 14.
On the bus, Gage says, IT HURTS TO LIFT UP MY LEG.
I HAVE TO HELP IT UP A BIT.
IT'S WEIRD.
Outside, Gage says, I'M NOT GOING TO DO MUCH TODAY.
I THINK THE COMPETITION
IS PRETTY MUCH NARROWED DOWN
TO ONE PERSON.
I THINK THAT'S EVAN.
I THINK EVAN'S
GOING TO TAKE THE BELT,
BUT WE'RE JUST GOING
TO SEE HOW IT ALL ROLLS OUT.
Text reads, Gage, freestyle skiing, 14. At the ice rink, the athletes face Derek, Perdita and Adam.
Perdita says, ATHLETES,
ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO BE GREAT
ON THIS LAST DAY OF TRAINING,
BUT I'VE GOT TO BE HONEST.

A LOT OF YOU ARE SENSING
IT'S THE END OF THE COMPETITION.
Rajan yawns.
Perdita says, YOU'RE KIND
OF JUST COASTING THROUGH
THE REST
OF OUR DAYS TOGETHER.
I DON'T SEE THE INTENSITY
OR SENSE OF URGENCY THAT
I SAW IN THE EARLIER WEEKS.
CAIYLA,
YOU'RE A FIGURE SKATER.
YOU HAVE A BUILT-IN ABILITY
THAT NOBODY HERE HAS THIS WEEK.
WHERE'S THE FIRE
IN YOUR BELLY?
YOU SHOULD
BE TEARING UP THIS ICE.
I WANT TO SEE THAT FROM YOU.
Caiyla nods.
She says, OKAY?
Perdita says, GAGE.
Gage nods. Sloane and Caitlyn use crutches.
Perdita says, I FEEL LIKE YOU KNOW YOU HAVE
AN OPPORTUNITY TO WIN IT ALL,
BUT I STILL FEEL LIKE
YOU'RE BEING A LITTLE SAFE.
GET AFTER IT.
GO AFTER IT.
Gage says, I WILL.
Perdita says, THE REST OF YOU,
IF YOU START BANKING IT IN NOW,
THEN YOU ARE SAYING
TO YOURSELF, AS AN ATHLETE,
WHEN THINGS KINDA GET HARD,
OR I FEEL LIKE
I CAN'T WIN SOMETHING,
YOU GIVE YOURSELF
THE PERMISSION NOT TO TRY HARD.
AND IF YOU DO THAT NOW HERE,
YOU'LL DO
THAT WHEN YOU LEAVE HERE.
YOUR HABITS
ARE YOUR CHARACTER,
AS ATHLETES,
BUT ESPECIALLY AS PEOPLE.
I'M SAYING THIS TO YOU
BECAUSE I'VE TRULY BEEN THERE.
IN 2010, INDOOR SEASON,
I COULDN'T WIN
A RACE TO SAVE MY LIFE.
I REMEMBER CALLING
MY HUSBAND SAYING
I'M NOT GOING TO THE WORLDS,
AND I WAS EMBARRASSED
TO SHOW UP
AT THE WORLDS NOT WINNING.
SO MY HUSBAND
SAID TO ME ON THE PHONE,
"IF YOU DON'T GO TO WORLDS,
THEN YOU'RE JUST SAYING
TO YOURSELF
THAT YOU CAN QUIT WHENEVER."
AND HE'S LIKE
"I DON'T KNOW THAT PERDITA."
SO I WENT TO THE WORLDS,
EMBARRASSED, I'LL BE HONEST,
I GOT ON THAT PLANE EMBARRASSED,
AND I NEVER WANTED
TO FEEL THAT FEELING AGAIN.
I'M A FIGHTER.
ALL THOSE GIRLS
THAT I COULDN'T BEAT ALL SEASON?
FIRE KICKED THEIR BUTT.
Caiyla smiles.
Perdita says, IN THE FINAL, I GOT
A SILVER MEDAL AT THE WORLDS.
IF I HAD STAYED HOME, AND LICKED
MY WOUNDS, AND DIDN'T TRY,
ALL THE THINGS THAT I GAINED
THERE WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN.
WHEN YOU LEAVE HERE, YOU WILL
BE PROUD, I PROMISE YOU.
Derek says, I AM ABSOLUTELY ON
BOARD WITH EVERYTHING YOU SAID.
TODAY YOU REALLY HAVE
TO THROW YOURSELF INTO THIS.
THERE'S NO BEING CAUTIOUS.
YOU'VE GOT TO
PUSH IT TO THE EDGE.
TAKE THE CONFIDENCE THAT
YOU GUYS HAVE FROM EACH ONE
OF YOUR INDIVIDUAL SPORTS,
AND WE'RE GOING TO MAKE
YOU GUYS GO FAST. ALRIGHT?
Perdita says, ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.
LET THE TIGER OUT TODAY.
LET IT OUT.
Gage says, OH, YEAH.
Perdita says, ALRIGHT. LET'S GO.
(Cheering)
(Applause)
Adam says, WE'RE ON TO
THE LAST DAY OF TRAINING.

TO LEARN THAT THE SPORT
IS REALLY ANYBODY'S GAME.
Text reads, Adam, speed skating, 15. On the ice, the participating athletes stand wearing their helmets and skates. Adam stands with Derek.
Derek says, TODAY IS ALL ABOUT TURNS.
DRILL NUMBER ONE WITH A BUCKET.
YOU'RE GOING TO
GET IN A LOW POSITION,
AND WHAT YOU WANT TO DO IS
ACTUALLY PUSH DOWN AND FORWARD,
DOWN AND FORWARD.
Derek sits on a bucket on the ice. He skates while seated.
Adam says, USING THE BUCKET IT
FORCES YOU TO PUSH SIDEWAYS
BECAUSE PUSHING BACK YOU CAN'T
DO IT BECAUSE YOU'RE SITTING.
Adam skates on the bucket.
Ellyn says, THAT'S PROBABLY ABOUT AS
FAST AS I GO WITHOUT A BUCKET.
Derek skates back to the athletes. He spins to a stop on the bucket.
Derek says, LOOKS EASY
BUT IT'S NOT.
IT'S THE SECRET
TO SPEED SKATING.
IF YOU GUYS CAN
GET THIS, LOOK OUT.
Adam says, SO I'LL BE ON
THE BUCKET SHOWING YOU GUYS.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS,
I CAN TRY TO DEMONSTRATE AGAIN.
Adam and the other athletes sit on buckets. Derek stands.
Derek says, LET'S TRY IT.
The athletes start skating on their buckets.
Ellyn says, OH, GOSH, YEAH.
(Upbeat music plays)
The athletes skate towards Adam. Adam skates backwards on his bucket. Rajan skates close to Caiyla.
Caiyla says, BE CAREFUL, BRO!
Ellyn says, OH, NO!
EVERYBODY'S FASTER THAN ME!
Adam says, TRISTAN,
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A HOME BASE.
THIS FOOT'LL STAY HERE,
AND YOU WANNA BRING IT BACK.
Adam demonstrates how to keep one leg in the same position while using the other to move .
Tristan says, OKAY.
Adam says, AND THEN SAME THING
FOR THE OTHER SIDE, OKAY?
Tristan says, YEAH.
Adam says, BRING YOUR
FEET BACK TO YOUR BASE.
Adam watches Evan skate on his bucket.
Adam says, THERE YOU GO.
Derek says, ADAM IS REALLY STARTING
TO FIND HIS COACHING LEGS.
HE'S GIVING THEM
SOME GOOD INFORMATION.
Adam says, PUSH,
AND BRING IT BACK TOGETHER.
PUSH.
Derek says, I THINK THAT'S
GOING TO MAKE THIS A LOT BETTER
AND BRING
THE GROUP EVEN CLOSER TOGETHER.
Text reads, Derek Parra, Olympic champion.
Adam says, PUSH, BACK TO HOME BASE.
Adam demonstrates his skating push and Ellyn copies him.
Adam says, THERE YOU GO!
Ellyn says, THANK YOU, ADAM!
Derek says, NICE. THERE YOU GO. HA.
Adam says, EVERYBODY'S LOOKING REALLY GOOD.
Derek says, YOU GOT IT!
Evan says, THIS IS VERY FUN.
Evan spins on his bucket.
Derek says, I CAN HONESTLY TELL YOU,
I'VE BEEN COACHING FOR YEARS,
AND YOU ARE THE FIRST GROUP
OF ATHLETES THAT
HAS GOTTEN IT SO QUICKLY.
Adam says, THAT WAS AMAZING, GUYS,
I'M REALLY PROUD OF YOU GUYS.
Derek says, YEAH. PERDITA'S SPEECH REALLY
HELPED OUT, LIT A FIRE, HUH?
(Applause)
(Cheering)
Rajan says, GREAT JOB, EVERYONE.
Derek says, THAT'S AWESOME.
SO WE'RE GOING TO TAKE THAT
TECHNIQUE OF THE PUSH, AND PUT
IT INTO A TURN DRILL NOW.
BUCKET RIGHT HERE,
ELBOW AT MY SIDE.
HERE WE GO.
Derek squats into the speed skating position with his left hand on his bucket. He skates around a circle in the ice.
He says, CROSSOVERS ARE PRETTY
INTIMIDATING TO LEARN,
ESPECIALLY IN
A VERY SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME.
Evan skates the circle with his bucket.
Derek says, THREE, FOUR.
THERE YOU GO!
Evan starts around the circle again.
Derek says, THE INTRODUCTION TO
THE BUCKETS IN DIFFERENT DRILLS
IS GOING TO HELP THEM,
BUT THEY'VE GOT TO COMMIT.
Caiyla skates with her bucket.
Derek says, SWING IT BACK. THERE YOU GO!
KEEP YOUR SHOULDERS LEVEL.
KEEP GOING. THERE!
KEEP GOING. PUSH AND CROSS.
CROSS ALL THE WAY THROUGH.
THERE YOU GO.
Derek skates with Estella and her bucket.
He says, THEY'VE GOT
TO GET RID OF THAT FEAR
AND REALLY FOCUS ON EXECUTING.
Derek faces the athletes.
He says. YESTERDAY,
YOU COULDN'T MAKE ANY SPEED.
YOU'RE MAKING SPEED NOW.
I HOPE YOU GUYS FEEL THAT.
Gage says, AWESOME.
Tristin and Estella high five.
Adam says, ESTELLA, AWESOME.
Derek says, ALRIGHT?
NICE.
Estella and Gage fist bump.
Gage says, GOOD JOB.
Estella says, THANK YOU.
Gage says, WHEN YOU DID IT TODAY,
YOU'RE GAINING SPEED TOO.
YESTERDAY YOU
WERE HAVING A HARD TIME
TRYING TO KEEP YOURSELF GOING.
Estella says, YEAH.
Derek says, DON'T WORRY ABOUT GOING FAST.
DO IT RIGHT. THERE YOU GO.
Tristan skates the circle with his bucket.
Gage says, I'VE GOT TO STOP BEING CAREFUL,
AND I HAVE TO REALLY
START PUSHING MYSELF TO
GET THIS NUMBER ONE SPOT
BECAUSE I WANT IT AND I NEED IT.
Estella says, YEAH, PERDITA'S
TALK REALLY INSPIRED US.
Gage says, THAT TALK, TO ME,
NOW I'M REALIZING YOU'VE GOT TO
GO AS HARD AS YOU CAN,
NO MATTER WHAT.
Estella says, YEAH, NO MATTER WHAT.
YEAH.
Derek counts, TWO, THREE…
Evan skates the circle with Derek.
Gage says, THAT'S
THE PRESSURE ON ME RIGHT NOW,
I REALLY WANT
TO CATCH UP TO EVAN.
Estella says, YEAH, YOU NEED TO CATCH UP.
Gage says, I NEED TO START
PUSHING THE HARDEST,
20 TIMES HARDER
THAN I'VE EVER PUSHED BEFORE.
Estella says, YEAH.
Gage says, IT'S NOW OR NEVER.
Estella says, YEAH.
Gage says, AND IT'S A NOW OR NEVER STANCE
FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.
Estella says, YEAH.
Gage says, WHEN I FEEL DOWN,
I'M HARD ON MYSELF
I DON'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING.
THAT THING THAT PERDITA
SAID TO ME IS GOING TO
STICK WITH ME
FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE,
AND I'M GOING TO
BE USING THAT 24/7, NON-STOP.
Text reads, Gage, freestyle skiing, 14.
Gage says, PUSHING MY HARDEST
AND AS HARD AS I CAN GO.
The athletes sit on their buckets.
Derek says, THAT'S GOOD.
VERY NICE.
I THINK YOU GUYS
MADE SOME BIG STEPS TODAY.
WE'RE GOING TO GIVE YOU
A LITTLE GRADUATION TEST HERE.
WE'RE GOING TO
PUT YOU ON THE TRACK.
Evan says, I'M ALWAYS LOOKING
AT MY COMPETITORS IN TRAINING.
I WANT TO PUSH
MYSELF TO DO THE BEST I CAN.
Text reads, Evan, X-Country Skiing, 14. Evan skates on the track on the ice.
Derek says, OH, YEAH!
HA-HA! I LIKE IT, EVAN!
Evan says, TO DO THAT, I HAVE TO BE
BETTER THAN
THE OTHER COMPETITORS.
Derek says, NICE AND LOW.
Derek crouches lower to face the skaters on the track.
He says, LOW. NICE AND LOW.
Evan says, I'D CERTAINLY
SAY I FEEL PRESSURE.
ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN
THAT COULD PUT ME OUT
OF THE COMPETITION,
WHICH WOULD BE TERRIBLE.
On a laptop, Evan says, HI, MOM.
LONG TIME NO SEE.
A person says, HEY, BUDDY! HOW ARE YOU DOING?
In a video call is a woman with short blond hair. Text reads, Darlene, Evan’s mom.
Evan says, GREAT!
Darlene says, HEY, YOUR HAIR'S GETTING LONG.
Evan says, I KNOW, YEAH.
IT NEEDS A CUT.
Darlene says, IT DEFINITELY NEEDS A CUT.
Evan says, THIS WEEK WE'RE
DOING SPEED SKATING.
Darlene says COOL. I ALWAYS
WANTED TO TRY THAT.
Evan says, THE COMPETITION
IS GETTING A LITTLE MORE
HEATED AS WE NEAR THE END..
Darlene says, OKAY.
Evan says, ...SO I REALLY HAVE TO
DO WELL IN THIS TODAY,
GET A GOOD, SOLID LEAD.
Darlene says, DEAR, JUST TRY YOUR HARDEST,
AND HAVE FUN,
AND SOAK IN THE EXPERIENCE.
I THINK YOU'RE GOING
TO DO FANTASTIC TOMORROW.
Evan says, ALRIGHT, THANK YOU.
Darlene says, ANY TIME, BUDDY.
Evan says, OKAY.
Darlene says, CALL HOME MORE OFTEN.
GOOD LUCK TOMORROW!
Evan says, THANK YOU!
Evan closes the laptop. Back on the rink, he speed skates. Caitlyn and Sloane watch from bleachers.
Caitlyn says, EVAN'S BY FAR FASTER.
Sloane says, GAGE STILL IS PLAYING IT SAFE.
Gage catches up to Ellyn on the rink.
Gage says, RIGHT HERE.
Ellyn says, OH, MY GOSH.
Ellyn sighs and stands from her crouch.
She says, YOUR LEGS GET SO TIRED.
Gage says, TRY TO REALLY PUSH THAT HIP IN,
LIKE, REALLY GO IN LIKE THAT.
Ellyn says, YEAH.
Ellyn returns to her skating position.
Gage says, IT'S SO MUCH EASIER AS
SOON AS YOU PICK UP SOME SPEED.
(Rock music plays)
Tristan speeds around the track.
He says, OH, MY.
On a turn, Tristan stumbles and falls.
Derek says, OH, LOOK OUT!
FEET UP!
With his feet up, Tristan slides into a padded wall.
Derek says, YEAH!
Adam says, TRISTAN'S
WORKING REALLY HARD OUT THERE.
IT'S JUST SOMETHING
HASN'T CLICKED IN THIS SPORT.
Text reads, Adam, speed skating, 15.
Adam says, HE HASN'T REALLY GOT
THE TECHNIQUE, BUT I FEEL LIKE
HE MIGHT BE
ABLE TO DO IT HERE.
Perdita says, CAIYLA! HOW'S IT GOING?
Perdita joins Caiyla on a bench outside the rink.
Caiyla says, IT'S GOING GOOD.
Perdita asks, DO YOU FEEL FIRED UP
AT ALL BY WHAT I SAID?
Caiyla says, YES, I FELT SUPER INSPIRED.
I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU THOUGH.
Perdita says, TELL ME.
Caiyla asks, HOW DID YOU GET PAST YOUR LOWEST
POINT WHEN YOU WENT TO WORLDS?
Perdita says, OH, UM...
I THINK I FOCUSED ON
WHAT KIND OF ATHLETE
THAT I WANTED TO BE.
MORE THAN ANYTHING,
I ALWAYS FELT LIKE
I ALWAYS WANT
TO WALK OFF THE TRACK
AND FEEL PROUD ABOUT
WHATEVER I'VE PUT DOWN,
AND SO IF I LOOK BACK ON
A COMPETITION, AND I DIDN'T WIN,
BUT I KNEW I DID MY BEST,
THAT WAS GOLD FOR ME.
YOU'VE GOTTA FIGHT
YOUR WAY ONTO THIS PODIUM.
I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT.
YOU GOT IT?
Caiyla nods.
She says, YEAH.
Perdita says, ALRIGHT, GIRL.
GET BACK TO TRAINING.
Caiyla says, YOU'VE GOT IT.
Caiyla steps onto the ice.
Derek says, TIME TO SHOCK THE WORLD!
Perdita narrates, WITH THE INDIVIDUAL TIME TRIAL,
THE FIGHT
TO THE PODIUM BEGINS NOW.
THIS WILL RANK THEM GOING
INTO THE COMPETITION TOMORROW.
IT'S TIME TO LAY
IT ALL ON THE LINE.
Derek says, OKAY, SO RAJ,
FOUR AND A HALF LAPS.
WE'LL COUNT YOU DOWN.
A singer sings, I WILL HOLD ON.
NO MORE.
Each of the athletes gets in a starting position for their individual races.
Derek says, BEHIND THAT LINE.
The singer sings, I GOTTA LET GO.
Caiyla stands at the starting line.
She says, COOL.
Derek asks, READY?
Ellyn stands in the starting position.
The singer sings, AND WALK OUT THAT DOOR.
The other athletes get in their positions.
The singer sings, CAUSE NOTHING CAN
(indiscernible) ME.
(Whistle)
The athletes skate their individual races.
The singer sings, I THINK I'M MORE THAN FINE
YEAH, I KNOW I'M READY
TO FIGHT.
Evan picks up speed.
Derek says, GOOD START.
Adam says, YEAH, HE'S LOOKING GOOD.
The singer sings, NEVER TURN BACK THE NIGHT,
NO GOING BACKWARDS.
Derek says, OOH, SHE'S CROSSING
OVER. LOOK AT THAT.
Ellyn crosses one foot over the other as she skates.
Derek says, THIS IS REALLY
GOOD SKATING FOR HER.
Adam says, LOOK AT THE FOCUS.
LOOK AT HER EYES.
SHE IS FOCUSED.
The singer signs, I THINK I'M READY,
I'M THINK I'M MORE THAN FINE.
YEAH, I KNOW I'M READY,
TO FIGHT.
Tristan leans to the left as he turns.
Derek says, HE'S LEANING IN THE TURNS.
HE'S TRYING TO
LEAN IN THE TURNS.
OH, A LITTLE BIT OF A...
Tristan stumbles and falls.
Derek says, OH! GET UP!
Tristan crashes into a padded wall.
Derek says, OOH!
(Thudding)
Derek says, OUCH, OUCH, OUCH.
ALRIGHT. HE'S UP!
Adam says, THERE HE GOES.
KEEP GOING. KEEP GOING.
Rajan stumbles and falls.
Derek says, OH, THERE HE GOES!
Rajan slides across the ice.
Adam says, GET BACK UP, RAJ!
Rajan bumps into a padded wall but pulls himself up.
Derek says, THERE YOU GO.
KEEP GOING.
The singer sings, THIS IS THE TIME.
Other athletes skate down the rink.
The singer sings, THIS IS THE TIME.
Derek says, KEEP TRYING.
Adam says, GOOD JOB.
Derek says, ALL GUTS, ALL GLORY.
THAT'S WHAT YOU
WENT FOR, SO NICE JOB.
Tristan nods.
He says, THANK YOU
.
Adam says, GOOD JOB.
The singer sings, THIS IS THE TIME.
(Dramatic music plays)
In a time lapse, clouds pass through the sky. The athletes carry their bags to the coach bus.
Gage says, IT'S COMPETITION DAY.
I'M NOT SUPER STOKED ABOUT THAT.
I REALLY WANT
ONE MORE DAY OF TRAINING
TO GET MY
CONFIDENCE UP FOR THOSE TURNS.
Text reads, Gage, freestyle skiing, 14.
Estella says, LET'S SAY SOME PEOPLE
FALL IN OUR RACE TODAY.
IS THERE A WAY
TO AVOID THE CARNAGE?
Adam says, IF YOU'RE RIGHT BEHIND THEM,
AND YOU SEE THEM SLIPPING,
CUT INTO THE INSIDE.
Outside the bus Gage says, YESTERDAY,
AS SOON AS I SAW TRISTAN FALL,
I WAS BEING
REALLY CAUTIOUS, REALLY NERVOUS.
On the ice, Tristan falls.
Derek says, OH! GET UP! OW!
OW! OUCH, OUCH, OUCH.
On the bus, Gage says, I THOUGHT
YOU BROKE YOUR LEG.
Tristan says, I THINK EVERYBODY
THOUGHT I BROKE MY LEG.
Gage says, I WAS LIKE...
THAT COULD BE ME
IF I DON'T TONE
IT BACK A LITTLE BIT,
SO I TONED IT
BACK A TOUCH, I THINK.
Elsewhere, he says, THAT REALLY SET ME BACK
FOR MY CONFIDENCE LEVEL,
SO HOPEFULLY TODAY I CAN
CLEAR EVERYTHING OUT OF MY MIND,
JUST GET CONFIDENCE
AROUND THOSE CORNERS,
TRYING TO GET NUMBER ONE SPOT.
(Triumphant music plays)
Text reads, speed skating, the competition.
(Cheers)
(Applause)
Adam says, THESE RACES
WILL BE THEIR FIRST TIME
BEING IN A GROUP,
SINCE THE BASICS ON
ROLLER SKATES,
WHEN YOU KIND OF HAD THAT.
HOPEFULLY, NO ONE GETS HURT.
Outside, it snows as the athletes walk off the bus. In the ice rink, they walk together wearing their skates, helmets, safety glasses and skin tight race suits.
Tristan says, A LOT
OF PEOPLE SAID I COULD WIN THIS,
BUT IT'S GOING
TO BE A LITTLE
BIT OF A CHALLENGE
BECAUSE OF GAGE AND EVAN.
THEY'RE DEFINITELY
MY BIGGEST COMPETITION.
Evan says, WE ARE ALL FRIENDS,
BUT THIS IS A COMPETITION,
AND I REALLY
WANT TO DO WELL.
Rajan says, I'M NOT TOO CONCERNED
ABOUT THE OVERALL LEADER-BOARD
RIGHT NOW,
AND I'M JUST HERE TO REPRESENT.
I'M GOING TO BRING
THE HEAT TO THE ICE,
AND TRY
AND WHIZ AROUND THAT TRACK.
The athletes step onto the ice.
Sloane says, WHOA!
Caitlyn says, LOOKING
LIKE REAL SPEED SKATERS!
Derek says, LOOK AT THIS!

TO THE COMPETITION TODAY.

ONE OF YOU WILL HAVE A SHINY
NEW GOLD MEDAL,
AND MAYBE MOST IMPORTANTLY,
BRAGGING RIGHTS TO
FASTEST PERSON ON ICE.
Adam says, MINUS ME.
Perdita says, WELL...
(Laughter)
Derek says, MINUS ME.
Perdita says, TRUE!
The athletes say, OOH!
Perdita says, I LIKE IT!
OKAY.
Derek says, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT
COULD HAPPEN IN THE SPORT
OF SPEED SKATING,
ESPECIALLY IN A 500 METER.
BASED ON YOUR OWN SKILL
AND HOW YOU FEEL ON THE ICE,
YOU SHOULD STRATEGIZE
FOR YOUR BEST OUTCOME.
Perdita says, COACH ADAM, I LOVE HEATS.
I USED TO GO WIRE
TO WIRE AS HARD AS I COULD,
BUT IS THAT
THE RIGHT STRATEGY HERE?
Adam says, IF YOU'RE IN FIRST OR SECOND,
AND YOU'RE IN A SPOT TO MOVE
ON AND ADVANCE TO THE FINALS,
I WOULDN'T ADVISE
PUSHING YOURSELF REALLY HARD,
JUST FOR THE FACT THAT IF YOU
FALL, YOU'RE OUT OF THE FINALS.
Perdita says, YEAH, THIS REMINDS
ME OF THE HURDLES.
YOU HAVE TO STAY ON YOUR FEET.
Derek laughs.
Perdita says, ALRIGHT, ARE YOU READY?
The athletes say, YEAH!
(Cheering)
(Applause)

LEAVE IT ALL
OUT ON THE TRACK.
Text reads, Estella, ski jumping, 13.
Perdita narrates, RAJAN,
WHILE HE'S NOT THE FASTEST,
IN SPEED SKATING,
ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN.

CATCHING UP, AND SEE IF I CAN
SNAG A SPOT IN THE FINALS,
AND MAYBE EVEN PODIUM.
Text reads, Rajan, curling, 14. On the ice, Rajan stumbles.
He says, OH, MY GOSH!
Adam says, LET'S GO!

IN A RACE SITUATION.
LITERALLY, A CRASH COURSE
IN SPEED SKATING.
Adam says, YEAH, YEAH.
Derek chuckles. Rajan, Estella, Caiyla and Gage stands on the ice.

MORE ON JUST LEARNING,
ACTUALLY,
INSTEAD OF JUST TRYING
TO GO AS FAST AS POSSIBLE.
Text reads, Tristan, snowboarding, 13.
Tristan says, SO I WISH I STARTED
A LITTLE BIT EARLIER
DOING THAT BECAUSE
I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN
A LOT FARTHER
IN THE COMPETITION.
Perdita narrates, ELLYN;
THE DOG MUSHERS DETERMINATION
TOOK HER FROM BARELY
BEING ABLE TO SKATE,
TO CONQUERING
CROSSOVERS IN JUST THREE DAYS.
SHE COULD BE THE DARK HORSE.
Ellyn says, THE PEOPLE
WHO ARE FAST WE THINK
ARE GOING TO DO
REALLY WELL, BUT YOU NEVER KNOW.
IF SOMETHING DOES HAPPEN,
MAYBE I CAN STAY ON MY SKATES
AND GO AROUND IT,
AND MAYBE GET AHEAD.
Text reads, Ellyn, dog mushing, 15.

PERSON HERE ON ICE.

A LOT FASTER AROUND CORNERS,
AND REALLY GIVE IT ALL
I'VE GOT IN THE STRAIGHTAWAYS.
Text reads, Tristan, snowboarding, 13.

(Cheering)
Derek says, THIS IS IMPRESSIVE.

WENT DOWN ON THAT
LAST TURN AS HE PEEKED BACK
TO SEE WHERE EVAN WAS,
BUT HE KEPT ON
HIS FEET
AND PULLED OUT A VICTORY.
Adam says, YEAH, THAT WAS A GREAT RACE.

TO THIS WEEK'S MEDAL CEREMONY.
THIS WEEK WAS A GOODIE,
WASN'T IT?
Perdita, Adam and Derek face the other athletes. By the podium.
The athletes say, YEAH.
Perdita says, WE HAVE OUR TWO SPECIAL
SHOUT-OUTS TO GIVE,
AND THESE ARE TIED TO CHARACTER.
Derek says, AT THE BEGINNING
OF THE WEEK, I TALKED ABOUT TWO
CHARACTERISTICS
THAT I THOUGHT WERE REALLY
IMPORTANT IN BEING A CHAMPION.
ONE WAS MINDING THE GAP,
HAVING THE AWARENESS
TO KNOW WHERE YOU ARE NOW,
AND WHERE
YOU WANT TO BE.
THIS ATHLETE CAME
TO THE ICE EVERY DAY
WITH A GOAL IN THEIR MIND,
AND WORKED ON IT DILIGENTLY,
AND AT THE TIME OF COMPETITION
WAS ABLE TO EXECUTE IT.
SO MY FIRST SHOUT-OUT
AWARD GOES TO, ELLYN.
(Cheering)
(Applause)
Ellyn smiles.
Derek says, IT WAS SO
GREAT AS A COACH TO SEE
THOSE CROSSOVER IN UNDER
PRESSURE IN COMPETITION.
AWESOME.
Ellyn says, THANK YOU.
Derek says, MY SECOND SHOUT-OUT,
THE RISE SHOUT-OUT.
THERE WAS ONE ATHLETE WHO
I SAW OUT TALKING TO THE OTHERS,
GIVING SOME ADVICE, TRYING
TO RAISE THE GROUP AS A WHOLE.
THE SECOND SHOUT-OUT GOES TO, GAGE.
Gage looks surprised.
(Cheering)
(Applause)
On the rink, Gage, Estella and Tristan sit on buckets.
Gage says, AWESOME. GOOD JOB.
Gage and Estella fist bump.
Estella says, THANK YOU.
Gage skates by Ellyn.
