Transcript: Clues and Predictions
(soft music plays)
An animated title against a sunny sky reads "TVOKids Power Hour of Learning."
In off, Laura says WELCOME TO
TVO KIDS POWER HOUR
OF LEARNING!
TODAY'S PRIMARY LESSON: CLUES
AND PREDICTIONS!
Miss K sits on a brown couch inside a living room. She's in her thirties, with short curly brown hair.
A caption appears on screen. It reads "Primary I-3. Miss K."
Miss K says WELCOME TO
POWER HOUR.
MY NAME IS MISS K,
AND TODAY, WE'RE GOING TO BE
READING A STORY
CALLED
IGGY PECK, ARCHITECT.
She shows a book titled "Iggy Peck Architect", then says AND WE'RE GOING TO BE MAKING
PREDICTIONS AS WE READ THIS BOOK
BY LOOKING AT THE ILLUSTRATIONS.
SO WE'RE GOING TO FIRST
QUICKLY START
BY LOOKING CLOSELY AT THE
PICTURE.
WHAT DO YOU SEE?
She holds up the closed book. The cover has several drawings on it, including a boy with brown hair holding a pencil, several tall buildings, a ruler, a woman and a white cat.
Miss K says I SEE A BOY.
I ALSO SEE SOMEONE THAT MIGHT
BE A MOTHER.
MAYBE A TEACHER.
AND AS I LOOK OVER HERE,
IT KIND OF LOOKS LIKE SOME
FRUITS THAT ARE BEING BUILT
TO LOOK LIKE A TOWER OF
SOME SORT.
SO AS I LOOK CLOSELY AT
THIS PICTURE,
AT THE ILLUSTRATIONS, IT'S GOING
TO REALLY HELP ME
UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS BOOK
IS ABOUT.
SO WHEN WE LOOK AT CLUES,
CLUES ARE JUST LIKE PREDICTIONS.
A caption reads "Predictions."
Miss K says THEY HELP US THINK ABOUT WHAT
MIGHT HAPPEN IN A STORY.
TODAY AS WE READ, WE'RE GOING TO
ACTUALLY BE MAKING
SOME PREDICTIONS BY LOOKING AT
THE PICTURES
AND THE ILLUSTRATIONS.
SO AS I LOOK AT THESE PICTURES,
I THINK TO MYSELF
"WHO IS THIS BOOK ABOUT?"
MIGHT BE ABOUT THE BOY.
OR MAYBE IT'S ABOUT THE TEACHER.
BUT I THINK BECAUSE HE'S IN
THE MIDDLE,
THAT IT'S ABOUT THE BOY.
She places a sticky note that reads "Boy" next to the boy.
She says I ALSO THINK ABOUT "WHAT MIGHT
THIS STORY BE ABOUT?"
AND IT LOOKS TO ME LIKE HE IS
DRAWING A BUILDING
SO I THINK THIS BOOK MIGHT BE
ABOUT BUILDING.
SO I'M GOING TO PUT MY STICKY
RIGHT OVER THERE.
Next to the tallest building in the drawing she places a note that reads "What."
Miss K says BUT IF I WANTED TO, I COULD
ALSO PUT IT HERE,
'CAUSE THIS ALSO LOOKS LIKE
SOMETHING THAT'S BEING BUILT.
She moves the note to a building made of fruit.
She says AND THEN I WONDER TO MYSELF
"WHERE MIGHT THIS STORY
TAKE PLACE?"
I DO HAVE SOME CLUES HERE
THAT SHOW ME,
THESE KIND OF LOOK LIKE
CHALK STICKS.
MAYBE THIS MIGHT BE IN A
CLASSROOM.
I ALSO SEE A RULER, THAT GIVES
ME A CLUE AS WELL.
SO I THINK I'M GOING TO PUT...
THE "WHERE" MIGHT BE IN A CLASS,
BUT I'LL PUT IT RIGHT HERE.
She places a note that reads "Where" next to the ruler.
She says SO TODAY, WE'RE GOING TO BE
READING ABOUT
IGGY PECK, ARCHITECT.
AND IGGY PECK, ARCHITECT,
HE IS AN ARCHITECT.
THE WORDS ARE ALSO HELPING ME
MAKE SOME PREDICTIONS AS WELL,
'CAUSE IT'S ALSO GIVING ME CLUES
AS TO WHAT THIS BOOK MIGHT
BE ABOUT.
SO IGGY PECK, ARCHITECT, IS INTO
ARCHITECTURE
AND HE BUILDS MANY DIFFERENT
THINGS.
SO TODAY WE'RE GOING TO FIND OUT
ABOUT ALL THE DIFFERENT THINGS
THAT HE BUILDS. HE BUILDS WITH
ANYTHING HE FINDS,
SO WE'RE GOING TO SEE WHAT HE
BUILDS WITH TODAY.
AND AS WE READ THE STORY, WE'RE
GOING TO BE LOOKING
AT THE PICTURES TO HELP US GET
CLUES TO HELP US PREDICT
WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN IN THE STORY.
AND WE KNOW THAT A PREDICTION IS
WHEN WE FIND CLUES
THAT HELP US MAKE SENSE
OF A STORY.
A caption appears on screen. It reads "Permission for reading Iggy Peck Architect comes fomr Abrams Books for Children."
Miss K opens the book and flips through the first two pages as she says IGGY PECK, ARCHITECT.
BY ANDREA BEATY AND DAVID
ROBERTS.
She reads
"YOUNG IGGY PECK IS AN
ARCHITECT,
"AND HAS BEEN SINCE HE WAS TWO.
"WHEN HE BUILT A GREAT TOWER
IN ONLY ONE HOUR
"WITH NOTHING BUT DIAPERS
AND GLUE.
She shows a drawing of Iggy as a baby standing next to a tower made of diapers.
She reads
"'GOOD GRACIOUS, IGNATIUS,' HIS
MOTHER EXCLAIMED.
"THAT'S THE COOLEST THING I'VE
EVER SEEN.
"BUT HER SMILE FADED
"AS FAST AS LIGHT...
"AS A LIGHT WIND BLEW PAST,
"AND SHE REALIZED THOSE DIAPERS
WEREN'T CLEAN.
"'UGH, IGNATIUS, MY SON! WHAT ON
EARTH HAVE YOU DONE?
"'THAT'S DISGUSTING AND NASTY,
IT STINKS!'."
SO WE CAN TELL THE TOWER HAS
BEEN CREATED
WITH SOILED DIAPERS, AND AS THE
WIND BLOWS PAST,
SHE SMELLS THAT THEY ARE
NOT CLEAN.
She flips a page and reads
"BUT IGGY WAS GONE, HE WAS
OUT ON THE LAWN,
"USING DIRT CLODS TO BUILD A
GREAT SPHINX.
She shows a drawing of a sphynx.
She reads
"WHEN IGGY WAS THREE, HIS
PARENTS COULD SEE
"HIS UNUSUAL PASSION WOULD STAY.
"HE BUILT CHURCHES AND CHAPELS
"WITH PEACHES AND APPLES
"AND TEMPLES FROM
MODELLING CLAY."
IF WE LOOK CLOSELY, WE CAN SEE
THAT THESE PICTURES,
THESE ILLUSTRATIONS, ARE HELPING
US MAKE SENSE
OF WHAT MIGHT COME NEXT.
In the drawing, Iggy builds a city with fruits, vegetables and clay as his parents watch.
Miss K reads
"AT DINNER ONE NIGHT, TO HIS
FATHER'S DELIGHT,
"IGGY GOT A BRIGHT GLEAM
IN HIS EYE.
"AND OUT ON THE PORCH BUILT THE
ST. LOUIS ARCH
"FROM PANCAKES AND COCONUT PIE."
She points at a drawing of Iggy crowning an arch made of pancakes with one coconut pie.
Miss K says
SO WE KNOW THAT IGNATIUS USES
ANYTHING HE CAN FIND
TO BUILD.
She reads
"DEAR IGGY HAD IT MADE UNTIL
SECOND GRADE,
"WHEN HIS TEACHER WAS MISS
LEELA GREER."
Iggy joins about a dozen other children in a classroom.
Miss K says
SO I'M IMAGINING THIS
IS HIS TEACHER
AS I LOOK AT THE ILLUSTRATIONS
TO HELP ME.
"ON THE FIRST DAY, SHE HAD
THIS TO SAY.
"'WE DO NOT TALK OF BUILDINGS
IN HERE.
"'GOTHIC OR ROMANESQUE, I
COULDN'T CARE LESS
"'ABOUT BUILDINGS, ANCIENT
OR NEW.'"
SO SHE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT OLD
BUILDINGS OR NEW BUILDINGS.
"SHE SAID IN HER LECTURES ABOUT
ARCHITECTURE
"THAT IT HAD NO PLACE IN
GRADE TWO.
SO AS I LOOK AT THE PICTURES,
I SEE THAT MISS LEELA GREER
IS ACTUALLY THROWING OUT BOOKS
THAT SPEAK ABOUT ARCHITECTURE
AND BUILDING.
SHE'S THROWING THEM ALL AWAY.
SHE DOES NOT CARE FOR BUILDINGS
AT ALL.
WHEN I LOOK CLOSELY, I ALSO SEE
ALL THE STUDENTS
ARE LOOKING AT HER,
BUT THEY DON'T SEE, IN THE BACK,
OUR FRIEND IGGY PECK IS
BUILDING.
SO I'M GOING TO ASK YOU A
QUESTION.
WHAT DO YOU PREDICT MIGHT HAPPEN
NEXT IN THIS STORY?
I'M GONNA GIVE YOU A MOMENT TO
THINK ABOUT THAT.
SO WHAT DO YOU PREDICT MIGHT
HAPPEN NEXT IN THIS STORY?
AS I LOOK AT THIS PAGE, I SEE
THAT YOUNG IGGY PECK
IS BUILDING, AND HE'S
NOT LISTENING TO HIS TEACHER,
MISS LEELA GREER.
I PREDICT THAT MISS LEELA GREER
WILL BREAK DOWN HIS BUILDING
AND ASK HIM NEVER TO
BUILD AGAIN.
THIS IS MY PREDICTION.
WHAT DO YOU PREDICT?
MIGHT IT BE DIFFERENT FROM MINE?
She turns the page and reads
"THAT SEEMED SEVERE,
"BUT SHE WAS SINCERE,
"FOR WHEN SHE WAS NO MORE
THAN SEVEN,
"SHE'D HAD A GREAT FRIGHT AT A
DIZZYING HEIGHT
"IN A BUILDING SO TALL IT
SCRAPED HEAVEN.
"SO SHE WAS REALLY HIGH UP,
"AND ON AN ARCHITECT'S TOUR OF
THE 95TH FLOOR,
"YOUNG LEELA GOT LOST FROM
THE GROUP."
In the drawing, a girl in a yellow dress wanders alone in a city of skyscrapers.
Miss K says
SO IT'S A CHILD, THIS IS MISS
LEELA GREER.
AND SHE GOT LOST FROM HER GROUP.
THEY WERE TAKING A TOUR AND SHE
WAS ON THE 95TH FLOOR.
IT WAS A DIZZYING HEIGHT,
VERY HIGH UP.
She reads
"SHE WAS FOUND TWO DAYS LATER."
IMAGINE THAT, TWO DAYS LATER!
"IN A STUCK ELEVATOR,
"EATING CHEESE WITH A FRENCH
CIRCUS TROUPE."
In a drawing, young Leela stands crammed inside an elevator with a circus troupe.
Miss K says
AND AS I LOOK AT THE IMAGES, I
SEE THAT CIRCUS TROUPE
RIGHT HERE, SHE'S STUCK, SHE
SEEMS A LITTLE BIT FRIGHTENED.
She reads
"AFTER THAT DAY, IT'S QUITE
SAFE TO SAY,
"SHE THOUGHT ALL BUILDING LOVERS
WERE NUTS.
"AS A TEACHER, SHE TAUGHT THAT
ABOVE ALL,
"ONE OUGHT TO AVOID THEM, NO
IFS, ANDS, OR BUTS."
SO FROM THAT DAY, SHE TRIED TO
AVOID ALL BUILDINGS
OR ANYTHING RELATED TO
BUILDINGS.
"AS YOU MIGHT GUESS, IT WOULD
CAUSE IGGY STRESS
"TO HEAR SUCH TERRIBLE TALK.
"BUT HE DIDN'T HEAR, HE
SAT IN THE REAR,
"WHILE BUILDING A CASTLE
OF CHALK."
She says
SO IT LOOKS LIKE MY PREDICTION
WAS NOT RIGHT,
BECAUSE MISS LEELA GREER IS NOW
SEEING THAT IGGY PECK
HAS CONTINUED TO BUILD HIS
HUGE CASTLE,
AND IT'S GOTTEN BIGGER.
SO WE'RE GOING TO LOOK AT THE
ILLUSTRATIONS,
AND AS WE LOOK AT THE
ILLUSTRATIONS,
I CAN SEE THAT MISS LEELA GREER
IS NOT VERY HAPPY
AND SHE'S POINTING AT IGGY,
WHO ACTUALLY HAS CREATED
A HUGE CASTLE.
AND BEFORE, I PREDICTED THAT
SHE WAS GOING TO
BREAK DOWN THAT CASTLE.
BUT IT LOOKS LIKE SHE DIDN'T.
AND IGGY PECK IS CONTINUING
TO BUILD.
AND I SEE THAT THE ILLUSTRATIONS
ARE HELPING ME
MAKE SENSE OF THAT.
"SO AS YOU MIGHT GUESS, IT WOULD
CAUSE IGGY STRESS
"TO HEAR SUCH TERRIBLE TALK.
"BUT HE DIDN'T HEAR, HE
SAT IN THE REAR,
"WHILE BUILDING A CASTLE
OF CHALK.
"'YOU, IGGY PECK! YOUR DESK
IS A WRECK!
"'TEAR DOWN THAT CASTLE
RIGHT NOW.
"'YOU WILL NOT BUILD IN HERE,
IS THAT PERFECTLY CLEAR?
"'DO YOU NEED TO SEE
PRINCIPAL HOWE?'"
She says
SO I'M GOING TO STOP HERE, AND I
WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT
WHAT YOU PREDICT MIGHT HAPPEN.
SO YOU COULD EITHER... SO I'M
GOING TO ASK YOU
TO EITHER GRAB A PENCIL,
OR SOME CRAYONS,
A PIECE OF PAPER.
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT YOU
DRAW A PICTURE
OR MAYBE WRITE WHAT YOU THINK
MIGHT HAPPEN NEXT.
SO WE KNOW THAT A PREDICTION IS
WHEN WE LOOK AT CLUES.
WE'RE LOOKING AT THE PICTURES TO
GIVE US CLUES
ABOUT WHAT WE THINK MIGHT
HAPPEN NEXT,
AND THIS IS A PREDICTION.
SO I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT
WHAT YOU PREDICT
MIGHT HAPPEN IN THIS STORY.
I PREDICT PRINCIPAL HOWE
MAY KEEP IGGY PECK IN
FOR RECESS.
THIS IS MY PREDICTION.
AND I THINK IGGY WILL ACTUALLY
USE THINGS
FROM PRINCIPAL HOWE'S DESK
TO BUILD A MARVELLOUS BUILDING.
THIS IS MY PREDICTION.
I'M GONNA DRAW WHAT I THINK
AND WHAT I PREDICT MIGHT HAPPEN
NEXT IN THIS STORY.
She turns the page and says
"'NO, MA'AM,' IGGY SAID.
"HE LOWERED HIS HEAD.
"AND HIS HEART SANK TO THE
FLOOR.
"WITH NO CHANCE TO BUILD, HIS
INTEREST WAS KILLED.
"NOW GRADE TWO WAS A BORE."
She says
HE'S BORED.
AND I IMAGINE IGGY IS BORED
BECAUSE HE CAN'T DO
THE THINGS HE REALLY
LOVES TO DO.
AND WE DO KNOW THAT WHAT HE
LOVES TO DO IS TO BUILD,
JUST LIKE ARCHITECTURE.
JUST LIKE ARCHITECTS, HE TOO
LIKES TO BUILD,
BUT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO.
She reads
"AFTER 12 LONG DAYS THAT
PASSED IN A HAZE
"OF READING, WRITING, AND
ARITHMETIC,
"MISS GREER TO THE CLASS
TO BLUE RIVER PASS
"FOR A HIKE AND AN OLD
FASHIONED PICNIC."
In a drawing, Miss Greer leads the whole class outdoors.
Miss K reads
SO THEY'RE ON THEIR WAY TO A
PICNIC RIGHT NOW.
AND WE SEE IGGY DOESN'T SEEM
VERY HAPPY,
HE'S NOT THRILLED TO BE THERE.
PROBABLY BECAUSE HE DOESN'T
GET TO BUILD.
She reads
"THEY CROSSED AN OLD TRESTLE
"TO A SMALL ISLAND NESTLE
"IN THE HEART OF A BURBLING
STREAM.
"BUT THEY NO SOONER PASSED THAN
THE FOOTBRIDGE..."
THIS BRIDGE." COLLAPSED, AND MISS LEELA
GREER STARTED TO SCREAM!
"'WE'RE TRAPPED HERE!
"'OH MY! ALAS, KIDS, GOODBYE!'
"HER EYEBALLS ROLLED BACK
IN HER HEAD.
"SHE DROPPED TO THE GROUND WITH
A VAGUE GROANING SOUND.
"LUCKILY FADED...
"LUCKILY FAINTED, NOT DEAD."
In a drawing Miss Greer lies on the floor as the children stand nearby.
Miss K reads
SO MISS LEELA GREER HAS FAINTED,
SHE'S NOT DEAD.
SHE'S STILL BREATHING,
BUT SHE WAS IN SHOCK.
I'M GOING TO ASK YOU NOW,
WHAT DO YOU PREDICT MIGHT HAPPEN
NEXT IN THIS STORY?
I WONDER HOW THIS CLASS MIGHT
GET BACK TO THE OTHER SIDE.
I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT
THAT WHAT IT IS
THAT YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO
DESIGN OR CREATE
TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE.
I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU AN
EXAMPLE,
AND WE'RE GOING TO WATCH A
VIDEO TO SHOW YOU
WHAT THAT MIGHT LOOK LIKE.
TO GIVE YOU SOME IDEAS.
A short video okays in which Phil performs different experiments and says
HAVE YOU EVER DONE A
SCIENCE EXPERIMENT?
AND WONDERED WHAT IT WOULD BE
LIKE IF YOU DID IT BIG?
I HAVE!
(LAUGHING)
Phil launches a rocket and a gigantic paper plane, then fires a catapult.
He says YEAH!
MY NAME IS PHIL, AND I TAKE YOU
EVERYDAY SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS
AND DO THEM BIG.
THIS IS
SCIENCE MAX: EXPERIMENTS
AT LARGE.
SCIENCE MAX
TAKING SOMETHING FLIMSY AND
MAKING SOMETHING STRONG.
WHOA! PASTA BRIDGE!
WE BUILD THINGS OUT OF PASTA,
SAND, AND PAPER
TO SHOW HOW YOU CAN USE SCIENCE
TO MAKE SOMETHING STRONG
OUT OF SOMETHING WEAK.
DRY SAND, WET SAND,
SCIENCE SAND!
IT'S ALL HOW YOU BUILD IT.
WHOO!
(SHRIEKING)
TODAY ON
SCIENCE MAX:
EXPERIMENTS AT LARGE.
In his lab, Phil eats pasta.
He says OH HI, SCIENCE MAXIMITES.
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN EATING PASTA
AND WONDERED
"WHAT COULD I BUILD WITH THIS?
"COULD I BUILD SOMETHING
THAT COULD HOLD
"AN IMPRESSIVE AMOUNT OF
WEIGHT?"
WELL, I HAVE, AND THAT'S WHAT
WE'RE GOING TO DO TODAY
ON
SCIENCE MAX: EXPERIMENTS
AT LARGE,
BUT WE'RE NOT GOING TO USE
COOKED PASTA
BECAUSE IT'S TOO DELICIOUS.
WE'RE GOING TO USE UNCOOKED
PASTA!
He chews on a dry noodle.
(CRUNCHING)
He continues
WHICH IS LESS DELICIOUS, BUT IS
GREAT FOR BUILDING.
WE'RE GOING TO MAKE A PASTA
BRIDGE. HERE'S HOW YOU DO IT!
FIRST, YOU WANT TO START
WITH A PLAN.
On a yellow desk he places a notebook with a drawing of three triangles clumped together.
He continues
AND THEN YOU WANT TO TAKE
YOUR PASTA...
I'M SAYING "PASTA," BUT
OF COURSE,
SPAGHETTI IS USUALLY THE BEST
THING TO USE.
AND THEN LAY IT OUT
ON YOUR PLAN.
THE REASON YOU HAVE A PLAN IS SO
THAT YOU CAN MAKE SURE
ALL OF THE SPAGHETTI IS EXACTLY
THE RIGHT LENGTH.
He cuts spaghettis to match the shape drawn on paper.
He says LAY IT OUT ON YOUR PLAN
PERFECTLY ALIGNED LIKE THAT.
THERE! AND NOW IT'S TIME TO GLUE
IT ALL TOGETHER.
NOW YOU CAN USE WHITE GLUE BUT
IT TAKES A LONG TIME,
SO I SUGGEST A HOT GLUE GUN,
BUT MAKE SURE YOU GET AN
ADULT'S PERMISSION
BEFORE YOU USE ONE OF
THESE, OKAY?
SO YOU TAKE YOUR PLAN, YOU LAY
IT OUT, YOU GLUE IT UP...
DON'T GLUE IT ON THE PAPER,
BECAUSE THAT WILL BE BAD.
AND YOU WILL END UP WITH
YOUR TRUSS.
AND IT LOOKS JUST LIKE THIS.
He produces two finished trusses made of thick spaghetti.
He continues NOW REMEMBER, YOU WANT
TWO SIDES,
BECAUSE THOSE ARE THE SIDES OF
YOUR BRIDGE.
AND AS YOU CAN SEE, I'VE USED
SEVERAL STRANDS OF PASTA
BECAUSE THAT WILL MAKE IT A
LITTLE BIT STRONGER.
ONCE YOU HAVE YOUR TRUSSES, IT'S
TIME FOR THE NEXT PART
OF THE PLAN. THIS IS THE ROADWAY!
He flips a page to show a drawing of a grid.
He continues
AND IT WORKS THE SAME WAY. LAY
OUT YOUR PASTA, GLUE IT UP,
AND BAM! THERE IT IS.
He takes out a roadway made of spaghetti and places the trusses on either side of it.
He continues NOW YOU PUT YOUR TRUSSES
ON YOUR ROADWAY
AND YOU GLUE THEM ALL TOGETHER,
AND YOU ALSO WANT TO PUT SOME
STRUTS ALONG THE TOP HERE
PROBABLY, TO KEEP IT NICE
AND RIGID.
IN THE END, YOU WILL END
UP WITH...
A FANTASTIC-LOOKING PASTA
BRIDGE!
He takes out a finished pasta bridge.
He continues
PRETTY GOOD, HUH?
LAAAA
PASTA BRIDGE!
NO OTHER BRIDGE COULD CLAIM TO
BE 100 percent PASTA.
MINUS THE GLUE.
99.8 PERCENT PASTA... Point 2 PERCENT GLUE.
I SAY THERE, CAPTAIN! SET SAIL!
SET SAIL FOR THE LAND OF PASTA
BRIDGES!
NOW IF THAT WAS PRETTY FAST FOR
YOU, DON'T WORRY.
ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE GOING
TO BE ON OUR WEBSITE.
A caption appears on screen. It reads "tvokids.com/sciencemax."
Phil continues NOW A BRIDGE ISN'T A BRIDGE
UNLESS IT SPANS A GAP.
BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT BRIDGES
ARE FOR.
He places the bridge between two stacks of books and says SO YOU PUT YOUR PASTA
BRIDGE UP THERE,
ACROSS THE BOOKS LIKE THAT.
AND THEN YOU CAN SEE JUST HOW
MUCH WEIGHT
THE BRIDGE HOLDS.
IT'S PRETTY IMPRESSIVE. IF YOU
BUILD IT RIGHT,
EVEN SOMETHING AS FLIMSY AND AS
DELICATE AS PASTA
CAN HOLD QUITE A BIT OF WEIGHT.
As he places metal blocks and coins on the central part of the bridge, he says
I LIKE TO USE BIG HEAVY BLOCKS
AND PUT THEM IN THE MIDDLE
WHERE THERE IS NO SUPPORT FROM
THE BOOKS WHATSOEVER.
AND JUST KEEP ADDING HEAVY
THINGS,
AND SEE JUST HOW MUCH WEIGHT THE
BRIDGE WILL HOLD
BEFORE IT BREAKS.
HOW MUCH WILL IT HOLD?
WELL, I'M NOT GONNA TELL YOU.
THAT'S WHERE YOU GET TO BE
SCIENCE MAXIMITES,
AND FIND OUT FOR YOURSELVES.
AND NOW WE'RE GONNA MAX IT OUT.
TODAY ON... OH, MY PASTA.
TODAY ON
SCIENCE MAX:
EXPERIMENTS AT LARGE,
WE'RE GOING TO BE LOOKING AT HOW
FRAGILE THINGS
CAN BECOME STRONG IF YOU BUILD
THEM RIGHT.
UM, WE'RE ALSO GOING TO BE
MAXING OUT THE PASTA BRIDGE
EXPERIMENT TO SEE IF WE CAN MAKE
ONE THAT'S STRONG ENOUGH
TO HOLD ME.
YOU THINK WE CAN DO IT?
I KNOW I HAVE NO IDEA.
BUT I'M GOING TO THE CENTRE FOR
SKILLS DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING
TO FIND OUT!
He puts on a yellow lab coat and pulls a lever. A yellow door opens and Phil walks through it. He disappears, then appears inside a large warehouse, where tall and long-haired Kyle waits.
Phil says OH HEY, KYLE!
Kyle says PHIL!
Phil says HOW YOU DOING?
Kyle says GREAT, THANKS!
Phil says AWESOME! THIS IS KYLE, HE'S GOT
A MASTER'S IN CIVIL ENGINEERING.
UH, DID YOU WANT SOME PASTA?
Kyle says I'M GOOD.
Phil says I CAN GO BACK AND GET SOME MORE!
Kyle says REALLY, I'M GOOD.
Phil says OKAY, SO WHAT DOES A CIVIL
ENGINEER DO?
Kyle says WELL, A CIVIL ENGINEER BUILDS
THE WORLD AROUND US.
TALK ABOUT OUR HOMES KEEPING US
WARM IN THE WINTER,
OUR ROADS... HEY,
EVEN OUR BRIDGES!
Phil says BRIDGES, HEY! THAT'S FANTASTIC.
'CAUSE THAT'S WHAT I NEED
YOUR HELP WITH.
I WANT TO MAX OUT THE PASTA
BRIDGE.
Kyle says AWESOME.
Phil says I WANT TO MAKE ONE BIG ENOUGH
THAT I CAN WALK ACROSS IT.
Kyle says OKAY, THAT'S NEVER BEEN
DONE BEFORE.
Phil says I KNOW, RIGHT?! YOU THINK
WE CAN DO IT?
Kyle says WE'RE GONNA NEED A LOT OF HELP
TO DO THAT.
Phil says EH, WE DON'T NEED A HELP. ALL WE
NEED IS A LOT OF PASTA.
WHICH I HAVE! AH-HAH!
They walk up to a table with several boxed of pasta stacked on it.
Kyle says NICE.
Phil says WHAT DO YOU SAY?
Kyle says YEAH, LET'S GIVE IT A SHOT.
Phil says OKAY, WE'LL GIVE IT A SHOT.
I'LL... WHY DON'T WE JUST TAKE
SOME TO START, AND THEN...
The Science Max logo appears.
(GLASS BREAKING)
As an animation shows a hand gluing hundreds of strands of pasta together, Phil says
IN ORDER TO MAX OUT OUR
PASTA BRIDGE,
THE IDEA IS TO TAKE MANY, MANY
STRANDS OF PASTA
AND JUST KEEP GLUING THEM
TOGETHER
SO THE LONG BEAMS OF PASTA IN
OUR GIANT BRIDGE
IS NOTHING BUT MANY, MANY
REGULAR SIZE
STRANDS OF PASTA.
HERE'S WHERE WE WERE AFTER 20
MINUTES OF GLUING.
As he and Kyle make a large pasta beam, Phil says THERE, THAT'S NICE.
Kyle says YEAH, I... I THINK THIS PIECE
IS DONE.
Phil says OKAY, SO HOW DOES IT WORK? IS
IT... IS IT STRONG?
Kyle says WELL, LET'S GIVE IT A GO, EH?
He tries to break the beam but cannot.
He says YEAH, I THINK THIS WILL HOLD.
Phil says GREAT! SO WE JUST NEED TO BUILD
A FEW MORE OF THESE THEN, RIGHT?
Kyle says YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT.
Phil says HOW MANY MORE?
Kyle says 212 MORE.
Phil says 212 OF THESE?
Kyle says MORE.
Phil says 212, THAT'S...
BUT IT TOOK US LIKE 20 MINUTES
TO MAKE THIS ONE.
Kyle says YEAH.
Phil says UH, WELL, I GUESS SO. I MEAN,
THIS IS
SCIENCE MAX: EXPERIMENTS
AT LARGE,
THAT'S WHAT WE DO.
WE JUST KEEP BUILDING, AND
BUILDING, AND, YOU KNOW,
I DON'T HAVE ANY PLANS FOR THE
NEXT WHILE, SO...
Kyle says UH, PHIL?
Phil says YEAH.
Kyle says I THINK THAT THERE'S A BETTER
WAY OF DOING THIS.
Phil says I WOULD BE DELIGHTED TO KNOW
THERE'S A BETTER WAY.
IT'D BE FASTER THAN THIS?
Kyle says MUCH FASTER.
Phil says SURE! LET'S DO IT!
Kyle says AWESOME.
Phil says I'M JUST GONNA PUT THE PASTA
BACK IN THE BAG, BECAUSE IT...
IT WILL GET STALE.
Kyle says YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THAT.
Phil says NO, BUT IT WILL GET STALE.
Kyle says PHIL, I'M GONNA CALL IN ONE
OF MY FRIENDS.
WE'RE PROBABLY GONNA NEED SOME
MORE HELP WITH THIS.
Phil says OH MAN, THAT'S A GREAT...
SORRY.
THAT'S A GREAT IDEA. 'CAUSE
IT'S... THERE'S...
Kyle says YEAH...
Phil says 'CAUSE AT LEAST WE COULD GET
YOUR FRIEND TO HELP CLEAN UP.
A male announcer says Building sand castles in 80 seconds.
As a timer counts down from 80, facing a container of sand Phil says BUILDING SAND CASTLES IS FUN,
BUT YOU CAN'T USE DRY SAND
BECAUSE IT DOESN'T STAY
UP VERY WELL.
YOU HAVE TO USE WET SAND.
BUT EVEN IF YOU USE WET SAND, IT
DOESN'T HOLD A LOT OF WEIGHT.
He places a bowling ball on top of a sand tower and it collapses.
He continues BUT IF YOU USE SAND WITH THE
POWER OF SCIENCE,
IT DOES HOLD THE WEIGHT!
He places the ball on top of a different sand tower and it holds.
He says DRY SAND, WET SAND,
SCIENCE SAND!
HERE'S WHAT'S GOING ON.
He picks up four ping pong balls and says
SAY THESE PING PONG BALLS ARE
GRAINS OF SAND.
WHEN THEY'RE DRY, THEY DON'T
HOLD TOGETHER VERY WELL.
THAT'S WHY YOU CAN'T BUILD A
SANDCASTLE OUT OF DRY SAND.
BUT IF YOU GET THE SAND WET A
LITTLE BIT,
THE GRAINS OF SAND WILL HOLD
TOGETHER A LITTLE BETTER
BECAUSE OF THE SURFACE TENSION
OF THE WATER.
THAT'S WHY IT'S EASIER TO BUILD
A SANDCASTLE WITH WET SAND.
He wets the balls and they clump together.
He continues BUT THEY STILL WON'T HOLD
MUCH WEIGHT.
BUT IF YOU ADD SOMETHING THAT
CREATES EVEN MORE FRICTION
BETWEEN THE GRAINS OF SAND,
LIKE, SAY,
THIS SANDPAPER...
IT WILL HOLD THE WEIGHT.
He places a piece of sandpaper on top of the ping pong balls and then places a heavier ball on top of it. It doesn't collapse.
He continues
SO HERE'S WHAT YOU DO. TAKE
WINDOW SCREEN
AND CUT IT INTO CIRCLES!
MAKE SURE YOU GET AN ADULT'S
PERMISSION FIRST, OKAY. DEAL?
As he puts sand and circles of window screen into a plant pot, he says
PUT IN A LAYER OF SAND,
PACK IT DOWN,
AND PUT IN A CIRCLE OF
WINDOW SCREEN.
AND A LAYER OF SAND,
PACK IT DOWN,
CIRCLE OF WINDOW SCREEN.
THEN, YOU GUESSED IT! LAYER OF
SAND. PACK IT DOWN.
CIRCLE OF WINDOW SCREEN.
THE WINDOW SCREENS ARE GONNA ADD
MORE FRICTION
BETWEEN THE GRAINS OF SAND,
AND WILL MAKE YOUR SANDCASTLE
STRONG.
STRONG WITH THE POWER OF
SCIENCE.
AND THEN YOU CAN PUT LOTS OF
WEIGHT ON IT.
He turns the pot around creating a sand tower, then places a bowling ball on top of it.
(THUDDING)
He says AND THERE YOU GO. SAND WITH THE
POWER OF SCIENCE!
The timer reaches 0.
(BELL DINGING)
Phil says HA-HA!
OKAY, I HAD TO MAX IT OUT.
LET'S SEE HOW STRONG SCIENCE
SAND REALLY IS.
HUH? HUH?
He places a sand tower on the floor and steps onto it.
(LAUGHING)
Phil says SCIENCE!
OUR PASTA BRIDGE WAS GOING TO
TAKE A LONG TIME TO BUILD
OUT OF INDIVIDUAL PIECES.
SO WE HAVE A NEW PLAN.
Phil and Kyle walk up to dark-haired Micaela as she works on something in the warehouse.
Phil says HEY, MICHAELA!
Michaela says HEY, PHIL!
Phil says HOW YOU DOING?
Michaela says I'M GREAT, HOW ARE YOU?
Phil says GOOD. THIS IS MICHAELA, AND SHE
IS AN UNDERGRAD
IN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING,
RIGHT?
Michaela says I AM.
Phil says AND YOU AND KYLE HAVE A NEW PLAN
FOR HOW WE CAN BUILD
OUR PASTA BRIDGE THAT'S NOT
GONNA LOOK LIKE THIS.
He shows Michaela the pasta beam he and Kyle had made before.
Michaela frowns and says AW, MAN!
Phil says THIS IS THE BEST THAT KYLE AND I
COULD DO WITH 20 MINUTES.
Michaela says OKAY, WELL, I HAVE BETTER.
Phil says GOOD, I'M GLAD. HOW ARE WE
GONNA DO IT?
Michaela says SO INSTEAD OF THAT, WE'RE GOING
TO TRY SOMETHING LIKE THIS.
She hands Phil a tube made of pasta.
Phil says OH, OKAY.
THIS IS SORT OF LIKE A GIANT
BURRITO KIND OF THING, RIGHT?
Michaela says YUP.
Phil says BUT WE'RE GOING TO
BUILD A BRIDGE OUT OF THIS?
Michaela says EXACTLY.
Phil says UH, WE'RE GONNA
MAKE IT LONGER, THOUGH?
Michaela says YEAH. WE'RE GONNA
MAKE IT EIGHT FEET LONG.
WE HAVE THIS LONG POLE, RIGHT?
Phil says YUP.
Michaela says AND WE HAVE
SHEETS OF THIS PASTA.
WE'RE GOING TO PUT
THEM ON THE DIAGONAL...
Phil says OKAY.
Michaela says AND WE'RE GOING TO ROLL IT,
BUT WE'RE GONNA START FROM THIS
CORNER AND WE'RE
GOING TO KEEP ROLLING.
Phil helps Michaela roll sheets of pasta onto a long yellow pole.
Michaela says AND DON'T FORGET TO ADD WATER.
AND WE GOTTA ADD WATER, 'CAUSE...
Phil says I'LL ADD THE WATER.
Michaela says OKAY.
Phil says ADDING WATER.
Michaela says YEAH. YUP.
Phil says JUST LIKE THIS?
Michaela says IT HELPS THE PASTA
TO STICK TOGETHER.
SO, AS WE'RE ROLLING,
WE'RE ROLLING, WE'RE ROLLING,
WE'RE GOING TO KEEP DOING
THIS WITH A BUNCH MORE SHEETS
SO IT GETS REALLY, REALLY
LONG, LIKE EIGHT FEET LONG.
AND WHEN WE'RE
FINALLY DONE ROLLING,
WE GOTTA SPRAY IT
WITH SOME VARNISH.
She sprays the pasta beam with varnish.
Phil says YUP.
Michaela says AND, SO, IT ALL HOLDS TOGETHER.
Phil picks up a thicker pasta tube and says GREAT AND IT'S GONNA
BE ABOUT THIS THICK...
Michaela says YEAH...
Phil says WHEN WE'RE FINISHED WITH IT.
Michaela says EXACTLY.
Kyle says THIS IS GONNA BE ONE OF THE
PARTS OF THE DECK OF OUR BRIDGE.
Phil says GREAT, SO EACH ONE OF THESE
LARGE PIECES IS GONNA BE LIKE
ONE SINGLE STRAND OF PASTA
ON THE LITTLE BRIDGE WE MAKE.
Michaela says YUP.
Phil says WE NEED A LOT OF THESE.
Michaela says A LOT.
Phil says A LOT.
STILL, IT'S A LOT FASTER
THAN DOING IT PIECE BY PIECE
WITH JUST THE SPAGHETTI.
Michaela says AWW.
Phil says EVERY TIME I HOLD IT UP
YOU MAKE THAT NOISE.
Michaela says AWW.
AWW!
AWW!
Phil laughs and says AWESOME.
An animated logo reads "Mini Max."
Phil walks up to a different table and says THE SHAPE OF SOMETHING
MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE
IN HOW STRONG IT IS.
GET SOME TOILET PAPER ROLLS
AND PUT THEM IN A SQUARE
AND THEN STACK
BOOKS ON TOP OF THEM.
As he piles books onto the four vertical rolls, he continues
THEY CAN HOLD WEIGHT.
THING IS,
THEY CAN ACTUALLY
HOLD A LOT MORE WEIGHT
THAN YOU PROBABLY THINK.
IN FACT,
THE AMOUNT OF WEIGHT
JUST PAPER
IN A TUBE
CAN HOLD IS REALLY
KIND OF IMPRESSIVE.
(LAUGHING)
AND NOW... OOH...
LET'S MAX IT OUT.
PHIL'S WEIGHT ON
TWO TOILET PAPER ROLLS.
He places a wood plank on two upright paper rolls on the floor, steps onto the plank and it collapses.
He says OOH!
NOPE! PHIL'S WEIGHT ON
FOUR TOILET PAPER ROLLS.
He repeats the experiment using 4 paper rolls but it collapses again.
He says NOPE! PHIL'S WEIGHT ON
SIX TOILET PAPER ROLLS.
He repeats the experiment using 6 paper rolls but it collapses again.
He says NOPE! PHIL'S WEIGHT ON
TEN TOILET PAPER ROLLS.
He repeats the experiment using 10 paper rolls, carefully steps onto the plank and it holds... barely.
He says WHOA.
(LAUGHING)
PHIL'S WEIGHT CAN BE SUPPORTED
BY TEN TOILET PAPER ROLLS,
BUT WHAT IF PHIL JUMPS?
He attempts to jump and the rolls collapse.
(SLAMMING)
(LAUGHING)
He says DIDN'T REALLY WORK.
Now he narrates
KYLE AND MICHAELA'S PLAN
IS TO USE A LONG POLE
AND SHEETS OF UNCOOKED PASTA.
WE ROLL THE PASTA AROUND
THE POLE AND SPRAY IT WITH
A LITTLE VARNISH.
WE ROLL SHEETS AND SHEETS OF
PASTA ALONG
AN EIGHT-FOOT LONG POLE,
MAKING MANY LAYERS OF PASTA.
THEN WE WAIT FOR IT TO DRY
AND REMOVE THE POLE.
WHAT WE HAVE IS AN EIGHT-FOOT
LONG HOLLOW TUBE OF PASTA
THAT BECOMES A SINGLE
PIECE OF THE BRIDGE.
THEN WE ATTACH A BUNCH
OF THESE PIECE TOGETHER
AND USE MORE SHEETS OF
PASTA TO GLUE THEM INTO
THE SHAPE WE USED FOR
OUR SMALL PASTA BRIDGE.
Inside the warehouse, as he continues to wrap sheets of pasta onto a truss as tall as an adult, Phil says
WE'RE MAKING OUR GIANT PASTA
BRIDGE BY WRAPPING SHEETS OF
PASTA AROUND
AND AROUND THE POLES
USING THE TECHNIQUE WE JUST HAD
MAKING A WHOLE LARGE POLE
OUT OF MANY, MANY, MANY
SHEETS OF PASTA
ROLLED AROUND EACH OTHER,
AND WE'VE MADE A GIANT TRUSS.
LOOK AT THIS.
THIS IS GREAT, GUYS!
Kyle says IT'S LOOKING PRETTY GOOD.
Phil says YEAH, IF I HIT IT DO YOU
THINK IT'D STAY TOGETHER?
Michaela says NO, STOP!
Phil says WHAT?
Kyle says THIS IS PASTA, NOT STEEL.
IT'S ONLY MADE TO JUST HOLD YOU.
Phil says KYLE, WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE
THE CHANCES THAT THIS IS GONNA
HOLD ME WHEN WE BUILD IT?
Kyle says SOMETHING LIKE 50-50?
Phil says NOT BAD.
MICHAELA, WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Michaela says I'M GOING TO HOPE FOR THE BEST.
HOPING FOR THE BEST.
Phil says THAT'S EXACTLY THE KIND OF
GREY AREA WE
LIKE TO WORK IN AT
SCIENCE MAX:
EXPERIMENTS AT LARGE.
EXPERIMENTS AT LARGE.
I DON'T KNOW IF ANYBODY'S
EVEN EVER DONE THIS BEFORE.
Kyle says NOT TO MY KNOWLEDGE.
Michaela says I DON'T THINK SO.
Phil says WHICH IS WHY WE HAVE NO
IDEA IF IT'S GOING TO WORK.
OKAY, SO, UH, MORE OF THESE,
'CAUSE THESE ARE THE SIDES.
BOTH Michaela and Kyle say YUP.
Phil says ROADWAY, AND THEN THE TOP.
BOTH Michaela and Kyle say YUP.
Phil says ALRIGHT, LET'S DO IT.
WHILE WE'RE WAITING,
IT'S A GOOD MOMENT TO POINT OUT
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT
MAKES OUR BRIDGE REALLY STRONG.
THAT IS TRIANGLES!
AS YOU CAN SEE, THE TRUSS,
OR THE SIDE OF OUR BRIDGE,
IS REALLY JUST
THREE BIG TRIANGLES.
TRIANGLES ARE VERY
STRONG SHAPES TO BUILD WITH,
AND THEY WORK GREAT IN BRIDGES.
NOW, IT'S TIME FOR
SCIENCE SO
SIMPLE A CAVEMAN COULD DO IT.
A Phil stands in a room holding a bone and dressed up as a caveman, in off he says
THIS IS A CAVEMAN.
HUH?
TODAY WE ARE GOING TO
TEACH THIS CAVEMAN HOW TO BUILD
A STRONG STRUCTURE.
The caveman grunts.
Phil says HERE ARE SOME BOXES.
Several boxes appear.
The caveman says HUH? HUH? HUH?
GO ON AND BUILD A SHELTER,
AND I'LL COME BACK
AND SEE HOW IT WORKED OUT.
The caveman GRUNTS.
Phil says NO, NO, NO. THAT'S NOT RIGHT.
The caveman says HUH?
Phil says YOU NEED TO BUILD
WALLS BY STACKING BOXES
ON TOP OF EACH OTHER.
THAT'S HOW YOU BUILD,
UNDERSTAND?
The caveman says OH! YEAH!
Phil says I'LL COME BACK LATER
AND SEE HOW IT WORKED OUT.
The caveman says grunts.
Later, as the caveman builds one tall wall, Phil says UH-OH.
DOES THAT LOOK RIGHT TO YOU?
The caveman says YEAH!
Phil says LOOK AT THOSE BOXES.
THEY'RE STACKED
ON TOP OF EACH OTHER.
The caveman grunts.
Phil says BUT IF THEY'RE IN TALL STACKS,
WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF
YOU PUSH ON THE WALL?
The caveman grunts and says I DON'T KNOW.
(WHISTLING)
As he touches one wall it collapses.
Phil says YOU SEE?
WALLS DON'T STAY UP
IF YOU BUILD LIKE THAT.
LET'S TRY AGAIN.
I'LL HELP YOU THIS TIME.
FIRST, LAY OUT THE FOUNDATION.
WHERE YOUR WALL SHOULD GO.
The caveman says OH.
He grunts as he places boxes in a large square foundation.
Phil says GOOD. NOW, LET'S MAKE
THE SECOND LEVEL.
NO, NO.
DON'T PUT IT RIGHT ON TOP.
YOU NEED TO STACK IN BETWEEN.
THAT'S HOW YOU
MAKE A STRONG WALL.
The caveman says OH, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!
Phil says OKAY. I'LL COME BACK LATER.
The caveman says YEAH, YEAH.
Later, as the caveman builds a fort around him alternating the boxes, Phil says NICE WORK.
WHY DON'T YOU GIVE IT A TRY?
The caveman grunts as he hits the walls with a bone, then says AH!
Phil says LOOKS STRONG,
BUT YOU FORGOT A BOX.
The caveman looks at one box left behind outside the fort and says HUH?!
HUH?
Phil says JOIN US NEXT TIME WHEN WE
TALK ABOUT HOW TO MAKE A DOOR.
The caveman says HUH?
Now standing outdoors, Phil says BUILDING A DOOR
IN A WALL IS HARD,
BECAUSE HOW DO YOU MAKE
A BIG GAPING HOLE IN YOUR WALL
WITHOUT YOUR WALL FALLING OVER?
WELL, PEOPLE HAVE COME UP
WITH LOTS OF WAYS TO PUT DOORS
AND WINDOWS IN WALLS
MADE OF STONE BLOCKS
OVER THE CENTURIES,
AND YOU CAN DO THIS AT HOME
WITH BOOKS LIKE I'M DOING
OR WITH BUILDING BLOCKS.
As he creates two stacks of books he says JUST GO UP UNTIL
YOU'RE HAPPY WITH THE HEIGHT,
AND THEN STACK EACH NEXT LAYER
A LITTLE CLOSER TO THE MIDDLE
UNTIL THE FINAL LAYER
TOUCHES JUST LIKE THIS...
He creates an arch of books, then says
AND THEN YOU
TAKE A BIG HEAVY BOOK
AND YOU DROP IT RIGHT ON TOP,
AND IT'S PRETTY STABLE,
AND YOU'VE JUST MADE A DOORWAY.
IT WORKS EVEN BETTER
IF IT'S PART OF A WALL,
BECAUSE YOU WANT
EXTRA WEIGHT ON THE OUTSIDE
OF THESE BOOKS HERE.
SO, OF COURSE,
I HAD TO BUILD ONE THAT
WAS PART OF A WHOLE WALL.
He steps over to another table, where there is a wall made of wooden blocks with a doorway in it.
Phil says THIS IS THE SAME
CORBELLED ARCH BUILT OUT OF
LITTLE BUILDING BLOCKS,
AND, AS YOU CAN SEE,
I WENT CLOSER AND CLOSER
TOGETHER UNTIL IT MEETS AT
THE TOP AND IT IS VERY STRONG.
He places a big and thick book on top of the archway, which does not collapse.
He says WHOA.
(LAUGHING)
NOW, LET'S MAX IT OUT!
As a fast-motion clip shows Phil and two assistants building a similar structure with big, long pieces of wood, Phil narrates
THE KIND OF ARCH WE'RE
BUILDING IS A CORBELLED ARCH,
AND THE SCIENCE MAX
BUILD TEAM AND I
ARE USING PIECES OF WOOD
CUT TO DIFFERENT LENGTHS.
HOW HIGH CAN IT GO?
WE CAN USE MY HEAD TO...
NO. OKAY. WAIT, WAIT.
IT TAKES A WHILE
TO GET TOGETHER,
BUT ONCE IT'S DONE, IT LOOKS
JUST LIKE THE KIND OF DOORWAYS
STONE BUILDINGS
HAD IN ANCIENT TIMES.
Now he stands under the finished arch and says
TA-DA! THERE YOU GO!
A MAXED OUT CORBELLED ARCH.
WE WENT STRAIGHT UP
UNTIL WE GO TO THESE LAYERS,
AND THEY GOT A LITTLE BIT
CLOSER AND CLOSER TO THE MIDDLE,
UNTIL THE LAST PIECE
IS ONE BIG SOLID PIECE
AND IF WE BUILT THIS RIGHT,
IT SHOULD BE STRONG
ENOUGH TO HOLD ME UP.
He hangs from the top of the arch and grunts.
(LAUGHING)
He says SCIENCE! WOO-HOO!
(WOMAN GASPING)
The structure collapses.
Phil says WELL, IT HELD ME UP
FOR A MINUTE, DIDN'T IT?
Phil narrates
WE ROLLED OUR PASTA
AND CONSTRUCTED ONE TRUSS.
NOW, WE'VE MADE
A LOT MORE ROLLS OF PASTA
AND CONNECTED THEM ALL
TOGETHER TO MAKE A SECOND TRUSS
AND A ROADWAY AS WELL AS
THE CROSS BRACES ON TOP,
AND WHEN WE GET IT ALL
TOGETHER WE END UP WITH...
Standing next to the finished pasta bridge, set between two ladders, Phil says
WHOA! PASTA BRIDGE!
Kyle and Michaela say PASTA BRIDGE!
(CHEERING)
Phil says WE DID IT! WE BUILT IT!
WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW LONG
IT WILL STAY UP, BUT IT'S UP,
IT'S DOING ITS BRIDGE
THING FOR NOW ANYWAY.
I AM VERY EXCITED
BECAUSE AS FAR AS WE KNOW,
I'M THE ONLY ONE TO TRY TO CROSS
A BRIDGE MADE OUT OF PASTA.
WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?
Kyle says I THINK I DON'T WANT
YOU TO BE THE LAST PERSON
TO CROSS A PASTA BRIDGE.
Phil says YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT,
BUT I'M GONNA DO IT.
I THINK WE'RE READY, YEAH?
Michaela says YEAH!
Phil says OKAY, HERE WE GO.
He carefully steps onto one of the floor beams of the bridge and it collapses.
He says AH!
OH, NO! THAT DOESN'T BODE
WELL FOR OUR PASTA BRIDGE.
WHAT HAPPENED HERE, KYLE?
Kyle says YOU PUT ALL YOUR WEIGHT
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE JOIST.
IT SNAPPED.
Phil says UH-HUH.
Michaela says IF ONLY THERE WAS A WAY
TO DISTRIBUTE YOUR WEIGHT.
MAYBE IF YOU CRAWLED?
Kyle says DO, LIKE, THE MILITARY
STYLE KIND OF...
Phil says OH, RIGHT. SO THAT I'M PUTTING
MY WEIGHT ON MORE THAN ONE SPOT.
Michaela says YEAH, YEAH.
Kyle says EXACTLY.
Phil says OH, WAIT A MINUTE.
THAT GIVES ME AN IDEA.
YOU GUYS STAY RIGHT THERE.
I KNOW WHAT TO DO!
I KNOW WHAT TO DO!
I KNOW WHAT TO DO!
Michaela says YOU'RE COMING BACK, RIGHT?
Wearing skis, Phil approaches the bridge and says SKIS DISTRIBUTE YOUR
WEIGHT OVER A LARGE AREA
SO YOU DON'T SINK IN THE SNOW,
THAT'S WHAT SKIS DO,
WHICH IS PERFECT
FOR THE PASTA BRIDGE.
(LAUGHING)
Phil says COME ON. COME ON.
OKAY, OKAY. HERE WE GO.
He slowly skis onto the bridge.
(CHUCKLING)
Michaela says CAREFULLY.
UH-HUH. IS IT WORKING?
Kyle says IT'S WORKING!
Phil says I HEAR SOME CRACKING.
Kyle says THIS MIGHT DO IT.
Michaela says TRY TO SPREAD YOUR LEGS APART.
SPREADING MY LEGS APART.
DISTRIBUTE YOUR WEIGHT.
DISTRIBUTE YOUR WEIGHT.
As he moves along, Phil says DISTRIBUTING MY WEIGHT.
IT'S SWAYING A LOT.
Michaela says OH, MAN.
Phil says OH.
WHOA!
WHOA!
Phil reaches the other side of the bridge.
(LAUGHING)
He says WHOA!
CROSSING THE PASTA BRIDGE!
WHOO! HIGH FIVES!
THERE YOU GO,
SCIENCE MAX:
EXPERIMENTS AT LARGE.
PASTA BRIDGE, SKIS.
WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT?
MAYBE A PASTA
CHAIRLIFT OF SOME SORT.
The caveman accidentally tears down his fort and says OH, NO!
Fast clips show Phil playing with the experiments shown before, as he says
SCIENCE!
WEAR IT. IT IS THE FASHION
ACCESSORY OF THE YEAR.
I WANT TO TRAVEL DOWN IT.
SHOULD HAVE MADE IT BIGGER.
(HUMMING)
SCIENCE! SCIENCE! SCIENCE!
HOW LONG DO
I HOLD THIS PIECE FOR?
Michaela says A LONG TIME.
Phil says GUYS?
GUYS?
THIS ISN'T FUNNY ANYMORE, GUYS.
Back to Miss K's living room, she holds up the book as she says
THE CLASS WAS AMAZED.
THEY STOOD THEIR QUITE DAZED,
UNCERTAIN OF WHAT TO DO.
BUT ONE BRIGHT YOUNG MAN
WAS OFF HATCHING A PLAN
WHICH STARTED WITH
MS. LEELA'S SHOE.
HM.
SOON, EACH LAD AND LASS
THERE AT BLUE RIVER PASS,
WAS WORKING TOGETHER AS ONE.
She holds up the book to show a drawing in which all the children work together to test different materials and gather wood.
Miss K says THE WHOLE CLASS IS REALLY
THINKING ABOUT WHAT THEY HAVE
TO USE TO CREATE SOMETHING
TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE,
AND I SEE VERY CLOSELY
THAT IGGY PECK
IS DRAWING A DESIGN,
KIND OF LOOKS LIKE IT
MIGHT BE A BRIDGE TO GET TO
THE OTHER SIDE AS EVERYONE
COLLECTS MATERIALS TO SEE
WHAT THEY CAN DO.
Miss K reads
AND WHEN SHE CAME TO,
MS. LEELA GREER KNEW
THAT SOMETHING QUITE
BRAVE HAD BEEN DONE.
SHE LOOKED IN THE AIR
AND SAW HANGING THERE
A STRUCTURE WITH
CABLES AND BRACES
AND ON THE FAR SIDE,
BEAMING WITH PRIDE,
THEY'RE EVER SO PROUD,
WERE 17 SMILING YOUNG FACES.
BOOTS, TREE ROOTS, AND STRING,
FRUIT ROLL-UPS AND THINGS,
SOME OF WHICH ONE
SHOULD NOT MENTION,
WERE STRETCHED RIDGE TO RIDGE
IN A GLORIOUS BRIDGE,
DANGLING FROM
SHOESTRING SUSPENSION.
In a drawing, Miss Greer wakes up alone on the island as the children wait for her on the other side of a makeshift suspension bridge.
Miss K says SO, THE WHOLE CLASS
CREATED A BRIDGE
USING THINGS THAT THEY FOUND.
AND MS. LEELA GREER,
SHE SEEMS QUITE SHOCKED
TO SEE WHAT
THEY'VE ACCOMPLISHED.
IT ALL BECAME CLEAR
TO MS. LEELA GREER
AS SHE CROSSED THAT
BRIDGE OVER THE STREAM,
THERE ARE WORSE THINGS TO DO
WHEN YOU'RE IN GRADE TWO,
THAN TO SPEND YOUR
TIME BUILDING A DREAM.
In the drawing, Leela crosses the bridge.
Miss K reads
NOW, EVERY WEEK
AT BLUE RIVER CREEK ELEMENTARY
IN SECOND GRADE,
ALL THE SCHOOL KIDS CAN HEAR
ALONG WITH MS. GREER
HOW THE WORLD'S GREATEST
BUILDINGS WERE MADE.
HM. SO, NOW, MS. LEELA GREER
TALKS ABOUT BUILDINGS.
THE WEEKLY GUEST SPEAKER,
IN T-SHIRT AND SNEAKERS,
TALKS OF BUILDING
FROM ROME TO QUEBEC.
OF COURSE, HE'S THE GUY
WHO BUILDS TOWERS FROM PIE,
THAT BRILLIANT...
THAT BRILLIANT YOUNG MAN,
IGGY PECK.
She closes the book and says
SO, TODAY, WE MADE PREDICTIONS.
WE ACTUALLY LOOKED
AT THE PICTURES,
WE ACTUALLY THOUGHT
ABOUT THE WORDS,
THAT HELPED US THINK ABOUT WHAT
MIGHT HAPPEN NEXT IN THE STORY.
SOME OF THE PREDICTIONS
THAT WE MADE WERE THAT HE MIGHT
POTENTIALLY BUILD A BRIDGE,
AND HE DID CREATE SOMETHING
WITH ALL OF HIS FRIENDS
HELPING HIM OUT.
SO, IT WASN'T JUST IGGY PECK
THAT DESIGNED AND CREATED
SOMETHING, HE ACTUALLY SOUGHT
THE HELP OF ALL OF HIS FRIENDS
TO BUILD A BRIDGE TO
GET TO THE OTHER SIDE,
AND THAT IS THE STORY
OF
IGGY PECK ARCHITECT.
IN THE BOOK,
IGGY PECK ARCHITECT,
IGGY IS AN ARCHITECT.
WE'RE GOING TO FIND
OUT A LITTLE BIT MORE
ABOUT WHAT ARCHITECTS DO.
A boy with wavy brown hair appears and says HI, I'M ELLERY.
IF I COULD BE ANYTHING,
I WOULD BE AN ARCHITECT.
Fast clips show children playing, wearing costumes, learning and having fun as a song plays that says
IMAGINE, IMAGINE
IMAGINE POWERFUL
IMAGINE COMICAL
IMAGINE MAGICAL
CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT?
Ellery appears and says HI, I'M ELLERY.
IF I COULD BE ANYTHING,
I WOULD BE AN ARCHITECT.
He draws a castle, then says
AN ARCHITECT DESIGNS BUILDINGS.
FIRST I WOULD DRAW WHAT I WANT
THE BUILDING TO LOOK LIKE.
A BIG TALL RECTANGULAR BUILDING
WITH LOTS OF SQUARE WINDOWS.
OR MAYBE A TRIANGULAR BUILDING.
In animation a triangular building appears and collapses.
Ellery says OOPS. BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD.
I WOULD MAKE A WHOLE
BUNCH OF SQUARE HOUSES
WITH POINTY TRIANGLE ROOFS
FOR MY FRIENDS AND I TO LIVE IN.
HM.
AH-HA!
I WOULD DRAW A SUPER
TALL BUILDING WITH A SLIDE
THAT GOES FROM
THE TOP OF THE 99TH FLOOR
RIGHT DOWN TO THE GROUND. WHEE!
In animation he slides down a swirling slide, then looks dizzy.
(GROANING)
He continues ONCE I'VE GOT THE DESIGN,
CALLED MY BLUEPRINTS,
IT'S TIME TO BUILD IT.
I WOULD SHOW
THE BUILDERS MY PLANS,
AND I WOULD DECIDE THE MATERIALS
THAT THE BUILDERS USE.
MY BUILDING WOULD BE
MADE OF METAL AND WOOD
TO MAKE IT SUPER STRONG,
BUT INSIDE I WOULD USE BOUNCY
MARSHMALLOWS FOR THE CARPETS.
WHOO! FUN! WOO-HOO!
MY BUILDINGS
WOULD BE REALLY TALL.
EVEN TALLER THAN THE MOON.
IT WOULD TAKE 400 PEOPLE
AND A MILLION HOURS TO BUILD.
In animation, a team of people works on a building.
(BANGING)
Ellery says TA-DA!
WHEN THE BUILDING IS ALL DONE
I WOULD CUT A BIG RIBBON
TO WELCOME EVERYONE
TO THEIR NEW HOME.
As he speaks, everything he mentions comes alive in cartoon animation.
He continues EVERYBODY WOULD CLAP
AND I WOULD TAKE A BOW.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU.
THEN WE WOULD ALL TAKE
THE ELEVATOR TO THE TOP
AND RIDE SUPER FAST
DOWN THE SLIDE BACK
TO THE GROUND AGAIN.
WHEE!
I'D GO 50 TIMES.
IF I WAS AN ARCHITECT,
I WOULD ALWAYS WEAR A BOWTIE
TO IMPRESS PEOPLE LIKE A KING
AND HIS BEST FRIEND
THE ROCK STAR.
THEY WOULD ASK ME TO BUILD THEM
TWO SUPER CASTLES SIDE BY SIDE
SO THEY CAN VISIT
EACH OTHER ALL THE TIME.
I WOULD DESIGN A CASTLE
WITH TWO HUGE SQUARES,
AND ZIGGY ZAGGY
LITTLE SQUARES ON TOP.
I'D MAKE THE CASTLE GREY,
THEN I WOULD BUILD
A GOLDEN BRIDGE
TO CONNECT THEM
SO THEY COULD VISIT EACH OTHER
WHENEVER THEY WANTED TO.
OH, AND A SUPER TALL TOWER
FOR THE DRAGON
TO ROCK AND ROLL IN.
I LOVE BEING AN ARCHITECT.
As Ellery hops and dances, a song plays that says
CAN YOU IMAGINE BEING
ANYTHING YOU WANT TO BE?
CAN YOU IMAGINE THERE'S
A WORLD FULL OF FANTASY?
AND IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT
LOTS IT BECOMES SO REAL
DID YOU KNOW?
DID YOU KNOW? DID YOU KNOW?
THAT YOU CAN DO
ANYTHING YOU WANT TO DO
IMAGINE THIS OR THAT,
THINK OF SOMETHING NEW
AND YOU CAN ALWAYS
CHANGE A THING OR TWO
ANYTHING YOU WANT,
IT'S REALLY UP TO YOU
BUH-BUH-BUH-BUH,
BUH-BUH-DUH-BUH-DUH
BUH-BUH-BUH-BUH,
BUH-BUH-DUH-BUH-DUH
BUH-BUH-BUH-BUH,
BUH-BUH-DUH-BUH-DUH
BUH-BUH-BUH-BUH,
BUH-BUH-DUH-BUH-DUH
BUH-BUH-DUH-BUH-DUH,
BUH-BUH-DUH-BUH-DUH
CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT?
Ellery says I'M ELLERY AND I'M AN ARCHITECT.
IMAGINE THAT!
End credits roll.
Now Miss K stands next to a wall with a sheet of paper stuck to it.
She says OKAY, SO. IN MY PREDICTION,
I PREDICTED THAT IGGY WOULD BE
STUCK FOR RECESS IN THE OFFICE
WITH MR. HOWE.
SO, I'M GOING TO DRAW WHAT
I PREDICT MIGHT HAPPEN NEXT
IN THE STORY.
I'M GONNA DRAW IGGY PECK.
As she draws, she says
SO, THIS IS IGGY.
I'M ALSO GOING TO DRAW A DESK.
THIS IS MR. HOWE.
THAT'S HIS OFFICE.
IGGY HAS A BIT OF HAIR.
AND I PREDICTED HE WOULD BE...
THAT HE WOULD BE BUILDING...
MAYBE I'LL USE BLUE
TO DESIGN SOMETHING THAT
HE WAS THINKING.
AND I'VE GOT A FEW
ERASERS UP AT THE TOP.
ONE MORE, MAYBE A PENCIL.
SO, THIS IS MY PREDICTION.
I PREDICT THAT
IGGY PECK IS GOING TO BE
IN AT RECESS BUILDING
USING PENS AND ERASERS
AND A CRAYON FOUND
ON MR. HOWE'S DESK.
THIS IS MY PREDICTION.
Now standing next to a desk with a bridge made of building blocks sitting on it, Miss K says SO, I CHALLENGE YOU
TODAY TO THINK ABOUT HOW
YOU MIGHT HELP IGGY
GET TO THE OTHER SIDE,
HIM AND HIS CLASSMATES.
SO, I'VE KIND OF DEMON...
I WANT TO DEMONSTRATE TO YOU
AND SHARE WITH YOU WHAT
IT IS THAT YOU MIGHT DO
TO CHALLENGE YOURSELF AT HOME
TO THINK ABOUT HOW YOU MIGHT
CREATE SOMETHING TO
GET TO THE OTHER SIDE.
OVER HERE I HAVE A TIN,
AS WELL AS ON THE OTHER SIDE.
THIS REPRESENTS THE HILL
THAT THEY GOT STUCK ON,
HIS WHOLE CLASS.
SO, I WANT YOU TO THINK
ABOUT WHAT YOU MIGHT DO
TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE.
I HAVE, AT HOME, BLOCKS.
SO, I'M ACTUALLY
USING THESE BLOCKS TO
ACTUALLY DESIGN A BRIDGE
TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE
SO THAT THEY CAN CROSS
AND MAKE THEIR WAY
TO THE OTHER SIDE SAFELY.
I CHALLENGE YOU TO THINK
ABOUT WHAT YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO
COLLECT AND GATHER JUST LIKE
THE CHILDREN DID IN THE BOOK
AND THINK ABOUT HOW
YOU MIGHT CREATE SOMETHING
TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE.
SO, TODAY, AS WE READ THE STORY
OF
IGGY PECK, ARCHITECT,
WE MADE PREDICTIONS.
WE LOOKED AT THE ILLUSTRATIONS,
AND WE ALSO READ WORDS
TO HELP US MAKE
SENSE OF THE STORY
AND WHAT MIGHT COME NEXT.
WHEN WE PREDICT,
WE ACTUALLY LOOK AT CLUES
THROUGH ILLUSTRATIONS,
OR EVEN WORDS TO HELP US
THINK ABOUT WHAT'S
COMING NEXT IN A STORY,
AND THAT HELPS US
MAKE SENSE OF STORIES.
SO, THANK YOU ONCE
AGAIN FOR JOINING ME
IN READING
IGGY PECK, ARCHITECT.
I'M SO GLAD YOU
WERE ABLE TO JOIN
AND I'M REALLY EXCITED
TO SEE ALL THE THINGS
THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE DESIGNED.
THANK YOU SO MUCH
FOR JOINING US.
MISS K SAYS GOODBYE,
UNTIL ANOTHER TIME.
(soft music plays)
A caption reads "Copyright 2020, The Ontario Educational Communications Authority."
An animated title against a sunny sky reads "TVOKids Power Hour of Learning."
In off, Laura says WELCOME TO
TVO KIDS POWER HOUR
OF LEARNING!
TODAY'S PRIMARY LESSON: CLUES
AND PREDICTIONS!
Miss K sits on a brown couch inside a living room. She's in her thirties, with short curly brown hair.
A caption appears on screen. It reads "Primary I-3. Miss K."
Miss K says WELCOME TO
POWER HOUR.
MY NAME IS MISS K,
AND TODAY, WE'RE GOING TO BE
READING A STORY
CALLED
IGGY PECK, ARCHITECT.
She shows a book titled "Iggy Peck Architect", then says AND WE'RE GOING TO BE MAKING
PREDICTIONS AS WE READ THIS BOOK
BY LOOKING AT THE ILLUSTRATIONS.
SO WE'RE GOING TO FIRST
QUICKLY START
BY LOOKING CLOSELY AT THE
PICTURE.
WHAT DO YOU SEE?
She holds up the closed book. The cover has several drawings on it, including a boy with brown hair holding a pencil, several tall buildings, a ruler, a woman and a white cat.
Miss K says I SEE A BOY.
I ALSO SEE SOMEONE THAT MIGHT
BE A MOTHER.
MAYBE A TEACHER.
AND AS I LOOK OVER HERE,
IT KIND OF LOOKS LIKE SOME
FRUITS THAT ARE BEING BUILT
TO LOOK LIKE A TOWER OF
SOME SORT.
SO AS I LOOK CLOSELY AT
THIS PICTURE,
AT THE ILLUSTRATIONS, IT'S GOING
TO REALLY HELP ME
UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS BOOK
IS ABOUT.
SO WHEN WE LOOK AT CLUES,
CLUES ARE JUST LIKE PREDICTIONS.
A caption reads "Predictions."
Miss K says THEY HELP US THINK ABOUT WHAT
MIGHT HAPPEN IN A STORY.
TODAY AS WE READ, WE'RE GOING TO
ACTUALLY BE MAKING
SOME PREDICTIONS BY LOOKING AT
THE PICTURES
AND THE ILLUSTRATIONS.
SO AS I LOOK AT THESE PICTURES,
I THINK TO MYSELF
"WHO IS THIS BOOK ABOUT?"
MIGHT BE ABOUT THE BOY.
OR MAYBE IT'S ABOUT THE TEACHER.
BUT I THINK BECAUSE HE'S IN
THE MIDDLE,
THAT IT'S ABOUT THE BOY.
She places a sticky note that reads "Boy" next to the boy.
She says I ALSO THINK ABOUT "WHAT MIGHT
THIS STORY BE ABOUT?"
AND IT LOOKS TO ME LIKE HE IS
DRAWING A BUILDING
SO I THINK THIS BOOK MIGHT BE
ABOUT BUILDING.
SO I'M GOING TO PUT MY STICKY
RIGHT OVER THERE.
Next to the tallest building in the drawing she places a note that reads "What."
Miss K says BUT IF I WANTED TO, I COULD
ALSO PUT IT HERE,
'CAUSE THIS ALSO LOOKS LIKE
SOMETHING THAT'S BEING BUILT.
She moves the note to a building made of fruit.
She says AND THEN I WONDER TO MYSELF
"WHERE MIGHT THIS STORY
TAKE PLACE?"
I DO HAVE SOME CLUES HERE
THAT SHOW ME,
THESE KIND OF LOOK LIKE
CHALK STICKS.
MAYBE THIS MIGHT BE IN A
CLASSROOM.
I ALSO SEE A RULER, THAT GIVES
ME A CLUE AS WELL.
SO I THINK I'M GOING TO PUT...
THE "WHERE" MIGHT BE IN A CLASS,
BUT I'LL PUT IT RIGHT HERE.
She places a note that reads "Where" next to the ruler.
She says SO TODAY, WE'RE GOING TO BE
READING ABOUT
IGGY PECK, ARCHITECT.
AND IGGY PECK, ARCHITECT,
HE IS AN ARCHITECT.
THE WORDS ARE ALSO HELPING ME
MAKE SOME PREDICTIONS AS WELL,
'CAUSE IT'S ALSO GIVING ME CLUES
AS TO WHAT THIS BOOK MIGHT
BE ABOUT.
SO IGGY PECK, ARCHITECT, IS INTO
ARCHITECTURE
AND HE BUILDS MANY DIFFERENT
THINGS.
SO TODAY WE'RE GOING TO FIND OUT
ABOUT ALL THE DIFFERENT THINGS
THAT HE BUILDS. HE BUILDS WITH
ANYTHING HE FINDS,
SO WE'RE GOING TO SEE WHAT HE
BUILDS WITH TODAY.
AND AS WE READ THE STORY, WE'RE
GOING TO BE LOOKING
AT THE PICTURES TO HELP US GET
CLUES TO HELP US PREDICT
WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN IN THE STORY.
AND WE KNOW THAT A PREDICTION IS
WHEN WE FIND CLUES
THAT HELP US MAKE SENSE
OF A STORY.
A caption appears on screen. It reads "Permission for reading Iggy Peck Architect comes fomr Abrams Books for Children."
Miss K opens the book and flips through the first two pages as she says IGGY PECK, ARCHITECT.
BY ANDREA BEATY AND DAVID
ROBERTS.
She reads
"YOUNG IGGY PECK IS AN
ARCHITECT,
"AND HAS BEEN SINCE HE WAS TWO.
"WHEN HE BUILT A GREAT TOWER
IN ONLY ONE HOUR
"WITH NOTHING BUT DIAPERS
AND GLUE.
She shows a drawing of Iggy as a baby standing next to a tower made of diapers.
She reads
"'GOOD GRACIOUS, IGNATIUS,' HIS
MOTHER EXCLAIMED.
"THAT'S THE COOLEST THING I'VE
EVER SEEN.
"BUT HER SMILE FADED
"AS FAST AS LIGHT...
"AS A LIGHT WIND BLEW PAST,
"AND SHE REALIZED THOSE DIAPERS
WEREN'T CLEAN.
"'UGH, IGNATIUS, MY SON! WHAT ON
EARTH HAVE YOU DONE?
"'THAT'S DISGUSTING AND NASTY,
IT STINKS!'."
SO WE CAN TELL THE TOWER HAS
BEEN CREATED
WITH SOILED DIAPERS, AND AS THE
WIND BLOWS PAST,
SHE SMELLS THAT THEY ARE
NOT CLEAN.
She flips a page and reads
"BUT IGGY WAS GONE, HE WAS
OUT ON THE LAWN,
"USING DIRT CLODS TO BUILD A
GREAT SPHINX.
She shows a drawing of a sphynx.
She reads
"WHEN IGGY WAS THREE, HIS
PARENTS COULD SEE
"HIS UNUSUAL PASSION WOULD STAY.
"HE BUILT CHURCHES AND CHAPELS
"WITH PEACHES AND APPLES
"AND TEMPLES FROM
MODELLING CLAY."
IF WE LOOK CLOSELY, WE CAN SEE
THAT THESE PICTURES,
THESE ILLUSTRATIONS, ARE HELPING
US MAKE SENSE
OF WHAT MIGHT COME NEXT.
In the drawing, Iggy builds a city with fruits, vegetables and clay as his parents watch.
Miss K reads
"AT DINNER ONE NIGHT, TO HIS
FATHER'S DELIGHT,
"IGGY GOT A BRIGHT GLEAM
IN HIS EYE.
"AND OUT ON THE PORCH BUILT THE
ST. LOUIS ARCH
"FROM PANCAKES AND COCONUT PIE."
She points at a drawing of Iggy crowning an arch made of pancakes with one coconut pie.
Miss K says
SO WE KNOW THAT IGNATIUS USES
ANYTHING HE CAN FIND
TO BUILD.
She reads
"DEAR IGGY HAD IT MADE UNTIL
SECOND GRADE,
"WHEN HIS TEACHER WAS MISS
LEELA GREER."
Iggy joins about a dozen other children in a classroom.
Miss K says
SO I'M IMAGINING THIS
IS HIS TEACHER
AS I LOOK AT THE ILLUSTRATIONS
TO HELP ME.
"ON THE FIRST DAY, SHE HAD
THIS TO SAY.
"'WE DO NOT TALK OF BUILDINGS
IN HERE.
"'GOTHIC OR ROMANESQUE, I
COULDN'T CARE LESS
"'ABOUT BUILDINGS, ANCIENT
OR NEW.'"
SO SHE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT OLD
BUILDINGS OR NEW BUILDINGS.
"SHE SAID IN HER LECTURES ABOUT
ARCHITECTURE
"THAT IT HAD NO PLACE IN
GRADE TWO.
SO AS I LOOK AT THE PICTURES,
I SEE THAT MISS LEELA GREER
IS ACTUALLY THROWING OUT BOOKS
THAT SPEAK ABOUT ARCHITECTURE
AND BUILDING.
SHE'S THROWING THEM ALL AWAY.
SHE DOES NOT CARE FOR BUILDINGS
AT ALL.
WHEN I LOOK CLOSELY, I ALSO SEE
ALL THE STUDENTS
ARE LOOKING AT HER,
BUT THEY DON'T SEE, IN THE BACK,
OUR FRIEND IGGY PECK IS
BUILDING.
SO I'M GOING TO ASK YOU A
QUESTION.
WHAT DO YOU PREDICT MIGHT HAPPEN
NEXT IN THIS STORY?
I'M GONNA GIVE YOU A MOMENT TO
THINK ABOUT THAT.
SO WHAT DO YOU PREDICT MIGHT
HAPPEN NEXT IN THIS STORY?
AS I LOOK AT THIS PAGE, I SEE
THAT YOUNG IGGY PECK
IS BUILDING, AND HE'S
NOT LISTENING TO HIS TEACHER,
MISS LEELA GREER.
I PREDICT THAT MISS LEELA GREER
WILL BREAK DOWN HIS BUILDING
AND ASK HIM NEVER TO
BUILD AGAIN.
THIS IS MY PREDICTION.
WHAT DO YOU PREDICT?
MIGHT IT BE DIFFERENT FROM MINE?
She turns the page and reads
"THAT SEEMED SEVERE,
"BUT SHE WAS SINCERE,
"FOR WHEN SHE WAS NO MORE
THAN SEVEN,
"SHE'D HAD A GREAT FRIGHT AT A
DIZZYING HEIGHT
"IN A BUILDING SO TALL IT
SCRAPED HEAVEN.
"SO SHE WAS REALLY HIGH UP,
"AND ON AN ARCHITECT'S TOUR OF
THE 95TH FLOOR,
"YOUNG LEELA GOT LOST FROM
THE GROUP."
In the drawing, a girl in a yellow dress wanders alone in a city of skyscrapers.
Miss K says
SO IT'S A CHILD, THIS IS MISS
LEELA GREER.
AND SHE GOT LOST FROM HER GROUP.
THEY WERE TAKING A TOUR AND SHE
WAS ON THE 95TH FLOOR.
IT WAS A DIZZYING HEIGHT,
VERY HIGH UP.
She reads
"SHE WAS FOUND TWO DAYS LATER."
IMAGINE THAT, TWO DAYS LATER!
"IN A STUCK ELEVATOR,
"EATING CHEESE WITH A FRENCH
CIRCUS TROUPE."
In a drawing, young Leela stands crammed inside an elevator with a circus troupe.
Miss K says
AND AS I LOOK AT THE IMAGES, I
SEE THAT CIRCUS TROUPE
RIGHT HERE, SHE'S STUCK, SHE
SEEMS A LITTLE BIT FRIGHTENED.
She reads
"AFTER THAT DAY, IT'S QUITE
SAFE TO SAY,
"SHE THOUGHT ALL BUILDING LOVERS
WERE NUTS.
"AS A TEACHER, SHE TAUGHT THAT
ABOVE ALL,
"ONE OUGHT TO AVOID THEM, NO
IFS, ANDS, OR BUTS."
SO FROM THAT DAY, SHE TRIED TO
AVOID ALL BUILDINGS
OR ANYTHING RELATED TO
BUILDINGS.
"AS YOU MIGHT GUESS, IT WOULD
CAUSE IGGY STRESS
"TO HEAR SUCH TERRIBLE TALK.
"BUT HE DIDN'T HEAR, HE
SAT IN THE REAR,
"WHILE BUILDING A CASTLE
OF CHALK."
She says
SO IT LOOKS LIKE MY PREDICTION
WAS NOT RIGHT,
BECAUSE MISS LEELA GREER IS NOW
SEEING THAT IGGY PECK
HAS CONTINUED TO BUILD HIS
HUGE CASTLE,
AND IT'S GOTTEN BIGGER.
SO WE'RE GOING TO LOOK AT THE
ILLUSTRATIONS,
AND AS WE LOOK AT THE
ILLUSTRATIONS,
I CAN SEE THAT MISS LEELA GREER
IS NOT VERY HAPPY
AND SHE'S POINTING AT IGGY,
WHO ACTUALLY HAS CREATED
A HUGE CASTLE.
AND BEFORE, I PREDICTED THAT
SHE WAS GOING TO
BREAK DOWN THAT CASTLE.
BUT IT LOOKS LIKE SHE DIDN'T.
AND IGGY PECK IS CONTINUING
TO BUILD.
AND I SEE THAT THE ILLUSTRATIONS
ARE HELPING ME
MAKE SENSE OF THAT.
"SO AS YOU MIGHT GUESS, IT WOULD
CAUSE IGGY STRESS
"TO HEAR SUCH TERRIBLE TALK.
"BUT HE DIDN'T HEAR, HE
SAT IN THE REAR,
"WHILE BUILDING A CASTLE
OF CHALK.
"'YOU, IGGY PECK! YOUR DESK
IS A WRECK!
"'TEAR DOWN THAT CASTLE
RIGHT NOW.
"'YOU WILL NOT BUILD IN HERE,
IS THAT PERFECTLY CLEAR?
"'DO YOU NEED TO SEE
PRINCIPAL HOWE?'"
She says
SO I'M GOING TO STOP HERE, AND I
WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT
WHAT YOU PREDICT MIGHT HAPPEN.
SO YOU COULD EITHER... SO I'M
GOING TO ASK YOU
TO EITHER GRAB A PENCIL,
OR SOME CRAYONS,
A PIECE OF PAPER.
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT YOU
DRAW A PICTURE
OR MAYBE WRITE WHAT YOU THINK
MIGHT HAPPEN NEXT.
SO WE KNOW THAT A PREDICTION IS
WHEN WE LOOK AT CLUES.
WE'RE LOOKING AT THE PICTURES TO
GIVE US CLUES
ABOUT WHAT WE THINK MIGHT
HAPPEN NEXT,
AND THIS IS A PREDICTION.
SO I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT
WHAT YOU PREDICT
MIGHT HAPPEN IN THIS STORY.
I PREDICT PRINCIPAL HOWE
MAY KEEP IGGY PECK IN
FOR RECESS.
THIS IS MY PREDICTION.
AND I THINK IGGY WILL ACTUALLY
USE THINGS
FROM PRINCIPAL HOWE'S DESK
TO BUILD A MARVELLOUS BUILDING.
THIS IS MY PREDICTION.
I'M GONNA DRAW WHAT I THINK
AND WHAT I PREDICT MIGHT HAPPEN
NEXT IN THIS STORY.
She turns the page and says
"'NO, MA'AM,' IGGY SAID.
"HE LOWERED HIS HEAD.
"AND HIS HEART SANK TO THE
FLOOR.
"WITH NO CHANCE TO BUILD, HIS
INTEREST WAS KILLED.
"NOW GRADE TWO WAS A BORE."
She says
HE'S BORED.
AND I IMAGINE IGGY IS BORED
BECAUSE HE CAN'T DO
THE THINGS HE REALLY
LOVES TO DO.
AND WE DO KNOW THAT WHAT HE
LOVES TO DO IS TO BUILD,
JUST LIKE ARCHITECTURE.
JUST LIKE ARCHITECTS, HE TOO
LIKES TO BUILD,
BUT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO.
She reads
"AFTER 12 LONG DAYS THAT
PASSED IN A HAZE
"OF READING, WRITING, AND
ARITHMETIC,
"MISS GREER TO THE CLASS
TO BLUE RIVER PASS
"FOR A HIKE AND AN OLD
FASHIONED PICNIC."
In a drawing, Miss Greer leads the whole class outdoors.
Miss K reads
SO THEY'RE ON THEIR WAY TO A
PICNIC RIGHT NOW.
AND WE SEE IGGY DOESN'T SEEM
VERY HAPPY,
HE'S NOT THRILLED TO BE THERE.
PROBABLY BECAUSE HE DOESN'T
GET TO BUILD.
She reads
"THEY CROSSED AN OLD TRESTLE
"TO A SMALL ISLAND NESTLE
"IN THE HEART OF A BURBLING
STREAM.
"BUT THEY NO SOONER PASSED THAN
THE FOOTBRIDGE..."
THIS BRIDGE." COLLAPSED, AND MISS LEELA
GREER STARTED TO SCREAM!
"'WE'RE TRAPPED HERE!
"'OH MY! ALAS, KIDS, GOODBYE!'
"HER EYEBALLS ROLLED BACK
IN HER HEAD.
"SHE DROPPED TO THE GROUND WITH
A VAGUE GROANING SOUND.
"LUCKILY FADED...
"LUCKILY FAINTED, NOT DEAD."
In a drawing Miss Greer lies on the floor as the children stand nearby.
Miss K reads
SO MISS LEELA GREER HAS FAINTED,
SHE'S NOT DEAD.
SHE'S STILL BREATHING,
BUT SHE WAS IN SHOCK.
I'M GOING TO ASK YOU NOW,
WHAT DO YOU PREDICT MIGHT HAPPEN
NEXT IN THIS STORY?
I WONDER HOW THIS CLASS MIGHT
GET BACK TO THE OTHER SIDE.
I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT
THAT WHAT IT IS
THAT YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO
DESIGN OR CREATE
TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE.
I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU AN
EXAMPLE,
AND WE'RE GOING TO WATCH A
VIDEO TO SHOW YOU
WHAT THAT MIGHT LOOK LIKE.
TO GIVE YOU SOME IDEAS.
A short video okays in which Phil performs different experiments and says
HAVE YOU EVER DONE A
SCIENCE EXPERIMENT?
AND WONDERED WHAT IT WOULD BE
LIKE IF YOU DID IT BIG?
I HAVE!
(LAUGHING)
Phil launches a rocket and a gigantic paper plane, then fires a catapult.
He says YEAH!
MY NAME IS PHIL, AND I TAKE YOU
EVERYDAY SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS
AND DO THEM BIG.
THIS IS
SCIENCE MAX: EXPERIMENTS
AT LARGE.
SCIENCE MAX
TAKING SOMETHING FLIMSY AND
MAKING SOMETHING STRONG.
WHOA! PASTA BRIDGE!
WE BUILD THINGS OUT OF PASTA,
SAND, AND PAPER
TO SHOW HOW YOU CAN USE SCIENCE
TO MAKE SOMETHING STRONG
OUT OF SOMETHING WEAK.
DRY SAND, WET SAND,
SCIENCE SAND!
IT'S ALL HOW YOU BUILD IT.
WHOO!
(SHRIEKING)
TODAY ON
SCIENCE MAX:
EXPERIMENTS AT LARGE.
In his lab, Phil eats pasta.
He says OH HI, SCIENCE MAXIMITES.
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN EATING PASTA
AND WONDERED
"WHAT COULD I BUILD WITH THIS?
"COULD I BUILD SOMETHING
THAT COULD HOLD
"AN IMPRESSIVE AMOUNT OF
WEIGHT?"
WELL, I HAVE, AND THAT'S WHAT
WE'RE GOING TO DO TODAY
ON
SCIENCE MAX: EXPERIMENTS
AT LARGE,
BUT WE'RE NOT GOING TO USE
COOKED PASTA
BECAUSE IT'S TOO DELICIOUS.
WE'RE GOING TO USE UNCOOKED
PASTA!
He chews on a dry noodle.
(CRUNCHING)
He continues
WHICH IS LESS DELICIOUS, BUT IS
GREAT FOR BUILDING.
WE'RE GOING TO MAKE A PASTA
BRIDGE. HERE'S HOW YOU DO IT!
FIRST, YOU WANT TO START
WITH A PLAN.
On a yellow desk he places a notebook with a drawing of three triangles clumped together.
He continues
AND THEN YOU WANT TO TAKE
YOUR PASTA...
I'M SAYING "PASTA," BUT
OF COURSE,
SPAGHETTI IS USUALLY THE BEST
THING TO USE.
AND THEN LAY IT OUT
ON YOUR PLAN.
THE REASON YOU HAVE A PLAN IS SO
THAT YOU CAN MAKE SURE
ALL OF THE SPAGHETTI IS EXACTLY
THE RIGHT LENGTH.
He cuts spaghettis to match the shape drawn on paper.
He says LAY IT OUT ON YOUR PLAN
PERFECTLY ALIGNED LIKE THAT.
THERE! AND NOW IT'S TIME TO GLUE
IT ALL TOGETHER.
NOW YOU CAN USE WHITE GLUE BUT
IT TAKES A LONG TIME,
SO I SUGGEST A HOT GLUE GUN,
BUT MAKE SURE YOU GET AN
ADULT'S PERMISSION
BEFORE YOU USE ONE OF
THESE, OKAY?
SO YOU TAKE YOUR PLAN, YOU LAY
IT OUT, YOU GLUE IT UP...
DON'T GLUE IT ON THE PAPER,
BECAUSE THAT WILL BE BAD.
AND YOU WILL END UP WITH
YOUR TRUSS.
AND IT LOOKS JUST LIKE THIS.
He produces two finished trusses made of thick spaghetti.
He continues NOW REMEMBER, YOU WANT
TWO SIDES,
BECAUSE THOSE ARE THE SIDES OF
YOUR BRIDGE.
AND AS YOU CAN SEE, I'VE USED
SEVERAL STRANDS OF PASTA
BECAUSE THAT WILL MAKE IT A
LITTLE BIT STRONGER.
ONCE YOU HAVE YOUR TRUSSES, IT'S
TIME FOR THE NEXT PART
OF THE PLAN. THIS IS THE ROADWAY!
He flips a page to show a drawing of a grid.
He continues
AND IT WORKS THE SAME WAY. LAY
OUT YOUR PASTA, GLUE IT UP,
AND BAM! THERE IT IS.
He takes out a roadway made of spaghetti and places the trusses on either side of it.
He continues NOW YOU PUT YOUR TRUSSES
ON YOUR ROADWAY
AND YOU GLUE THEM ALL TOGETHER,
AND YOU ALSO WANT TO PUT SOME
STRUTS ALONG THE TOP HERE
PROBABLY, TO KEEP IT NICE
AND RIGID.
IN THE END, YOU WILL END
UP WITH...
A FANTASTIC-LOOKING PASTA
BRIDGE!
He takes out a finished pasta bridge.
He continues
PRETTY GOOD, HUH?
LAAAA
PASTA BRIDGE!
NO OTHER BRIDGE COULD CLAIM TO
BE 100 percent PASTA.
MINUS THE GLUE.
99.8 PERCENT PASTA... Point 2 PERCENT GLUE.
I SAY THERE, CAPTAIN! SET SAIL!
SET SAIL FOR THE LAND OF PASTA
BRIDGES!
NOW IF THAT WAS PRETTY FAST FOR
YOU, DON'T WORRY.
ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE GOING
TO BE ON OUR WEBSITE.
A caption appears on screen. It reads "tvokids.com/sciencemax."
Phil continues NOW A BRIDGE ISN'T A BRIDGE
UNLESS IT SPANS A GAP.
BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT BRIDGES
ARE FOR.
He places the bridge between two stacks of books and says SO YOU PUT YOUR PASTA
BRIDGE UP THERE,
ACROSS THE BOOKS LIKE THAT.
AND THEN YOU CAN SEE JUST HOW
MUCH WEIGHT
THE BRIDGE HOLDS.
IT'S PRETTY IMPRESSIVE. IF YOU
BUILD IT RIGHT,
EVEN SOMETHING AS FLIMSY AND AS
DELICATE AS PASTA
CAN HOLD QUITE A BIT OF WEIGHT.
As he places metal blocks and coins on the central part of the bridge, he says
I LIKE TO USE BIG HEAVY BLOCKS
AND PUT THEM IN THE MIDDLE
WHERE THERE IS NO SUPPORT FROM
THE BOOKS WHATSOEVER.
AND JUST KEEP ADDING HEAVY
THINGS,
AND SEE JUST HOW MUCH WEIGHT THE
BRIDGE WILL HOLD
BEFORE IT BREAKS.
HOW MUCH WILL IT HOLD?
WELL, I'M NOT GONNA TELL YOU.
THAT'S WHERE YOU GET TO BE
SCIENCE MAXIMITES,
AND FIND OUT FOR YOURSELVES.
AND NOW WE'RE GONNA MAX IT OUT.
TODAY ON... OH, MY PASTA.
TODAY ON
SCIENCE MAX:
EXPERIMENTS AT LARGE,
WE'RE GOING TO BE LOOKING AT HOW
FRAGILE THINGS
CAN BECOME STRONG IF YOU BUILD
THEM RIGHT.
UM, WE'RE ALSO GOING TO BE
MAXING OUT THE PASTA BRIDGE
EXPERIMENT TO SEE IF WE CAN MAKE
ONE THAT'S STRONG ENOUGH
TO HOLD ME.
YOU THINK WE CAN DO IT?
I KNOW I HAVE NO IDEA.
BUT I'M GOING TO THE CENTRE FOR
SKILLS DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING
TO FIND OUT!
He puts on a yellow lab coat and pulls a lever. A yellow door opens and Phil walks through it. He disappears, then appears inside a large warehouse, where tall and long-haired Kyle waits.
Phil says OH HEY, KYLE!
Kyle says PHIL!
Phil says HOW YOU DOING?
Kyle says GREAT, THANKS!
Phil says AWESOME! THIS IS KYLE, HE'S GOT
A MASTER'S IN CIVIL ENGINEERING.
UH, DID YOU WANT SOME PASTA?
Kyle says I'M GOOD.
Phil says I CAN GO BACK AND GET SOME MORE!
Kyle says REALLY, I'M GOOD.
Phil says OKAY, SO WHAT DOES A CIVIL
ENGINEER DO?
Kyle says WELL, A CIVIL ENGINEER BUILDS
THE WORLD AROUND US.
TALK ABOUT OUR HOMES KEEPING US
WARM IN THE WINTER,
OUR ROADS... HEY,
EVEN OUR BRIDGES!
Phil says BRIDGES, HEY! THAT'S FANTASTIC.
'CAUSE THAT'S WHAT I NEED
YOUR HELP WITH.
I WANT TO MAX OUT THE PASTA
BRIDGE.
Kyle says AWESOME.
Phil says I WANT TO MAKE ONE BIG ENOUGH
THAT I CAN WALK ACROSS IT.
Kyle says OKAY, THAT'S NEVER BEEN
DONE BEFORE.
Phil says I KNOW, RIGHT?! YOU THINK
WE CAN DO IT?
Kyle says WE'RE GONNA NEED A LOT OF HELP
TO DO THAT.
Phil says EH, WE DON'T NEED A HELP. ALL WE
NEED IS A LOT OF PASTA.
WHICH I HAVE! AH-HAH!
They walk up to a table with several boxed of pasta stacked on it.
Kyle says NICE.
Phil says WHAT DO YOU SAY?
Kyle says YEAH, LET'S GIVE IT A SHOT.
Phil says OKAY, WE'LL GIVE IT A SHOT.
I'LL... WHY DON'T WE JUST TAKE
SOME TO START, AND THEN...
The Science Max logo appears.
(GLASS BREAKING)
As an animation shows a hand gluing hundreds of strands of pasta together, Phil says
IN ORDER TO MAX OUT OUR
PASTA BRIDGE,
THE IDEA IS TO TAKE MANY, MANY
STRANDS OF PASTA
AND JUST KEEP GLUING THEM
TOGETHER
SO THE LONG BEAMS OF PASTA IN
OUR GIANT BRIDGE
IS NOTHING BUT MANY, MANY
REGULAR SIZE
STRANDS OF PASTA.
HERE'S WHERE WE WERE AFTER 20
MINUTES OF GLUING.
As he and Kyle make a large pasta beam, Phil says THERE, THAT'S NICE.
Kyle says YEAH, I... I THINK THIS PIECE
IS DONE.
Phil says OKAY, SO HOW DOES IT WORK? IS
IT... IS IT STRONG?
Kyle says WELL, LET'S GIVE IT A GO, EH?
He tries to break the beam but cannot.
He says YEAH, I THINK THIS WILL HOLD.
Phil says GREAT! SO WE JUST NEED TO BUILD
A FEW MORE OF THESE THEN, RIGHT?
Kyle says YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT.
Phil says HOW MANY MORE?
Kyle says 212 MORE.
Phil says 212 OF THESE?
Kyle says MORE.
Phil says 212, THAT'S...
BUT IT TOOK US LIKE 20 MINUTES
TO MAKE THIS ONE.
Kyle says YEAH.
Phil says UH, WELL, I GUESS SO. I MEAN,
THIS IS
SCIENCE MAX: EXPERIMENTS
AT LARGE,
THAT'S WHAT WE DO.
WE JUST KEEP BUILDING, AND
BUILDING, AND, YOU KNOW,
I DON'T HAVE ANY PLANS FOR THE
NEXT WHILE, SO...
Kyle says UH, PHIL?
Phil says YEAH.
Kyle says I THINK THAT THERE'S A BETTER
WAY OF DOING THIS.
Phil says I WOULD BE DELIGHTED TO KNOW
THERE'S A BETTER WAY.
IT'D BE FASTER THAN THIS?
Kyle says MUCH FASTER.
Phil says SURE! LET'S DO IT!
Kyle says AWESOME.
Phil says I'M JUST GONNA PUT THE PASTA
BACK IN THE BAG, BECAUSE IT...
IT WILL GET STALE.
Kyle says YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THAT.
Phil says NO, BUT IT WILL GET STALE.
Kyle says PHIL, I'M GONNA CALL IN ONE
OF MY FRIENDS.
WE'RE PROBABLY GONNA NEED SOME
MORE HELP WITH THIS.
Phil says OH MAN, THAT'S A GREAT...
SORRY.
THAT'S A GREAT IDEA. 'CAUSE
IT'S... THERE'S...
Kyle says YEAH...
Phil says 'CAUSE AT LEAST WE COULD GET
YOUR FRIEND TO HELP CLEAN UP.
A male announcer says Building sand castles in 80 seconds.
As a timer counts down from 80, facing a container of sand Phil says BUILDING SAND CASTLES IS FUN,
BUT YOU CAN'T USE DRY SAND
BECAUSE IT DOESN'T STAY
UP VERY WELL.
YOU HAVE TO USE WET SAND.
BUT EVEN IF YOU USE WET SAND, IT
DOESN'T HOLD A LOT OF WEIGHT.
He places a bowling ball on top of a sand tower and it collapses.
He continues BUT IF YOU USE SAND WITH THE
POWER OF SCIENCE,
IT DOES HOLD THE WEIGHT!
He places the ball on top of a different sand tower and it holds.
He says DRY SAND, WET SAND,
SCIENCE SAND!
HERE'S WHAT'S GOING ON.
He picks up four ping pong balls and says
SAY THESE PING PONG BALLS ARE
GRAINS OF SAND.
WHEN THEY'RE DRY, THEY DON'T
HOLD TOGETHER VERY WELL.
THAT'S WHY YOU CAN'T BUILD A
SANDCASTLE OUT OF DRY SAND.
BUT IF YOU GET THE SAND WET A
LITTLE BIT,
THE GRAINS OF SAND WILL HOLD
TOGETHER A LITTLE BETTER
BECAUSE OF THE SURFACE TENSION
OF THE WATER.
THAT'S WHY IT'S EASIER TO BUILD
A SANDCASTLE WITH WET SAND.
He wets the balls and they clump together.
He continues BUT THEY STILL WON'T HOLD
MUCH WEIGHT.
BUT IF YOU ADD SOMETHING THAT
CREATES EVEN MORE FRICTION
BETWEEN THE GRAINS OF SAND,
LIKE, SAY,
THIS SANDPAPER...
IT WILL HOLD THE WEIGHT.
He places a piece of sandpaper on top of the ping pong balls and then places a heavier ball on top of it. It doesn't collapse.
He continues
SO HERE'S WHAT YOU DO. TAKE
WINDOW SCREEN
AND CUT IT INTO CIRCLES!
MAKE SURE YOU GET AN ADULT'S
PERMISSION FIRST, OKAY. DEAL?
As he puts sand and circles of window screen into a plant pot, he says
PUT IN A LAYER OF SAND,
PACK IT DOWN,
AND PUT IN A CIRCLE OF
WINDOW SCREEN.
AND A LAYER OF SAND,
PACK IT DOWN,
CIRCLE OF WINDOW SCREEN.
THEN, YOU GUESSED IT! LAYER OF
SAND. PACK IT DOWN.
CIRCLE OF WINDOW SCREEN.
THE WINDOW SCREENS ARE GONNA ADD
MORE FRICTION
BETWEEN THE GRAINS OF SAND,
AND WILL MAKE YOUR SANDCASTLE
STRONG.
STRONG WITH THE POWER OF
SCIENCE.
AND THEN YOU CAN PUT LOTS OF
WEIGHT ON IT.
He turns the pot around creating a sand tower, then places a bowling ball on top of it.
(THUDDING)
He says AND THERE YOU GO. SAND WITH THE
POWER OF SCIENCE!
The timer reaches 0.
(BELL DINGING)
Phil says HA-HA!
OKAY, I HAD TO MAX IT OUT.
LET'S SEE HOW STRONG SCIENCE
SAND REALLY IS.
HUH? HUH?
He places a sand tower on the floor and steps onto it.
(LAUGHING)
Phil says SCIENCE!
OUR PASTA BRIDGE WAS GOING TO
TAKE A LONG TIME TO BUILD
OUT OF INDIVIDUAL PIECES.
SO WE HAVE A NEW PLAN.
Phil and Kyle walk up to dark-haired Micaela as she works on something in the warehouse.
Phil says HEY, MICHAELA!
Michaela says HEY, PHIL!
Phil says HOW YOU DOING?
Michaela says I'M GREAT, HOW ARE YOU?
Phil says GOOD. THIS IS MICHAELA, AND SHE
IS AN UNDERGRAD
IN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING,
RIGHT?
Michaela says I AM.
Phil says AND YOU AND KYLE HAVE A NEW PLAN
FOR HOW WE CAN BUILD
OUR PASTA BRIDGE THAT'S NOT
GONNA LOOK LIKE THIS.
He shows Michaela the pasta beam he and Kyle had made before.
Michaela frowns and says AW, MAN!
Phil says THIS IS THE BEST THAT KYLE AND I
COULD DO WITH 20 MINUTES.
Michaela says OKAY, WELL, I HAVE BETTER.
Phil says GOOD, I'M GLAD. HOW ARE WE
GONNA DO IT?
Michaela says SO INSTEAD OF THAT, WE'RE GOING
TO TRY SOMETHING LIKE THIS.
She hands Phil a tube made of pasta.
Phil says OH, OKAY.
THIS IS SORT OF LIKE A GIANT
BURRITO KIND OF THING, RIGHT?
Michaela says YUP.
Phil says BUT WE'RE GOING TO
BUILD A BRIDGE OUT OF THIS?
Michaela says EXACTLY.
Phil says UH, WE'RE GONNA
MAKE IT LONGER, THOUGH?
Michaela says YEAH. WE'RE GONNA
MAKE IT EIGHT FEET LONG.
WE HAVE THIS LONG POLE, RIGHT?
Phil says YUP.
Michaela says AND WE HAVE
SHEETS OF THIS PASTA.
WE'RE GOING TO PUT
THEM ON THE DIAGONAL...
Phil says OKAY.
Michaela says AND WE'RE GOING TO ROLL IT,
BUT WE'RE GONNA START FROM THIS
CORNER AND WE'RE
GOING TO KEEP ROLLING.
Phil helps Michaela roll sheets of pasta onto a long yellow pole.
Michaela says AND DON'T FORGET TO ADD WATER.
AND WE GOTTA ADD WATER, 'CAUSE...
Phil says I'LL ADD THE WATER.
Michaela says OKAY.
Phil says ADDING WATER.
Michaela says YEAH. YUP.
Phil says JUST LIKE THIS?
Michaela says IT HELPS THE PASTA
TO STICK TOGETHER.
SO, AS WE'RE ROLLING,
WE'RE ROLLING, WE'RE ROLLING,
WE'RE GOING TO KEEP DOING
THIS WITH A BUNCH MORE SHEETS
SO IT GETS REALLY, REALLY
LONG, LIKE EIGHT FEET LONG.
AND WHEN WE'RE
FINALLY DONE ROLLING,
WE GOTTA SPRAY IT
WITH SOME VARNISH.
She sprays the pasta beam with varnish.
Phil says YUP.
Michaela says AND, SO, IT ALL HOLDS TOGETHER.
Phil picks up a thicker pasta tube and says GREAT AND IT'S GONNA
BE ABOUT THIS THICK...
Michaela says YEAH...
Phil says WHEN WE'RE FINISHED WITH IT.
Michaela says EXACTLY.
Kyle says THIS IS GONNA BE ONE OF THE
PARTS OF THE DECK OF OUR BRIDGE.
Phil says GREAT, SO EACH ONE OF THESE
LARGE PIECES IS GONNA BE LIKE
ONE SINGLE STRAND OF PASTA
ON THE LITTLE BRIDGE WE MAKE.
Michaela says YUP.
Phil says WE NEED A LOT OF THESE.
Michaela says A LOT.
Phil says A LOT.
STILL, IT'S A LOT FASTER
THAN DOING IT PIECE BY PIECE
WITH JUST THE SPAGHETTI.
Michaela says AWW.
Phil says EVERY TIME I HOLD IT UP
YOU MAKE THAT NOISE.
Michaela says AWW.
AWW!
AWW!
Phil laughs and says AWESOME.
An animated logo reads "Mini Max."
Phil walks up to a different table and says THE SHAPE OF SOMETHING
MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE
IN HOW STRONG IT IS.
GET SOME TOILET PAPER ROLLS
AND PUT THEM IN A SQUARE
AND THEN STACK
BOOKS ON TOP OF THEM.
As he piles books onto the four vertical rolls, he continues
THEY CAN HOLD WEIGHT.
THING IS,
THEY CAN ACTUALLY
HOLD A LOT MORE WEIGHT
THAN YOU PROBABLY THINK.
IN FACT,
THE AMOUNT OF WEIGHT
JUST PAPER
IN A TUBE
CAN HOLD IS REALLY
KIND OF IMPRESSIVE.
(LAUGHING)
AND NOW... OOH...
LET'S MAX IT OUT.
PHIL'S WEIGHT ON
TWO TOILET PAPER ROLLS.
He places a wood plank on two upright paper rolls on the floor, steps onto the plank and it collapses.
He says OOH!
NOPE! PHIL'S WEIGHT ON
FOUR TOILET PAPER ROLLS.
He repeats the experiment using 4 paper rolls but it collapses again.
He says NOPE! PHIL'S WEIGHT ON
SIX TOILET PAPER ROLLS.
He repeats the experiment using 6 paper rolls but it collapses again.
He says NOPE! PHIL'S WEIGHT ON
TEN TOILET PAPER ROLLS.
He repeats the experiment using 10 paper rolls, carefully steps onto the plank and it holds... barely.
He says WHOA.
(LAUGHING)
PHIL'S WEIGHT CAN BE SUPPORTED
BY TEN TOILET PAPER ROLLS,
BUT WHAT IF PHIL JUMPS?
He attempts to jump and the rolls collapse.
(SLAMMING)
(LAUGHING)
He says DIDN'T REALLY WORK.
Now he narrates
KYLE AND MICHAELA'S PLAN
IS TO USE A LONG POLE
AND SHEETS OF UNCOOKED PASTA.
WE ROLL THE PASTA AROUND
THE POLE AND SPRAY IT WITH
A LITTLE VARNISH.
WE ROLL SHEETS AND SHEETS OF
PASTA ALONG
AN EIGHT-FOOT LONG POLE,
MAKING MANY LAYERS OF PASTA.
THEN WE WAIT FOR IT TO DRY
AND REMOVE THE POLE.
WHAT WE HAVE IS AN EIGHT-FOOT
LONG HOLLOW TUBE OF PASTA
THAT BECOMES A SINGLE
PIECE OF THE BRIDGE.
THEN WE ATTACH A BUNCH
OF THESE PIECE TOGETHER
AND USE MORE SHEETS OF
PASTA TO GLUE THEM INTO
THE SHAPE WE USED FOR
OUR SMALL PASTA BRIDGE.
Inside the warehouse, as he continues to wrap sheets of pasta onto a truss as tall as an adult, Phil says
WE'RE MAKING OUR GIANT PASTA
BRIDGE BY WRAPPING SHEETS OF
PASTA AROUND
AND AROUND THE POLES
USING THE TECHNIQUE WE JUST HAD
MAKING A WHOLE LARGE POLE
OUT OF MANY, MANY, MANY
SHEETS OF PASTA
ROLLED AROUND EACH OTHER,
AND WE'VE MADE A GIANT TRUSS.
LOOK AT THIS.
THIS IS GREAT, GUYS!
Kyle says IT'S LOOKING PRETTY GOOD.
Phil says YEAH, IF I HIT IT DO YOU
THINK IT'D STAY TOGETHER?
Michaela says NO, STOP!
Phil says WHAT?
Kyle says THIS IS PASTA, NOT STEEL.
IT'S ONLY MADE TO JUST HOLD YOU.
Phil says KYLE, WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE
THE CHANCES THAT THIS IS GONNA
HOLD ME WHEN WE BUILD IT?
Kyle says SOMETHING LIKE 50-50?
Phil says NOT BAD.
MICHAELA, WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Michaela says I'M GOING TO HOPE FOR THE BEST.
HOPING FOR THE BEST.
Phil says THAT'S EXACTLY THE KIND OF
GREY AREA WE
LIKE TO WORK IN AT
SCIENCE MAX:
EXPERIMENTS AT LARGE.
EXPERIMENTS AT LARGE.
I DON'T KNOW IF ANYBODY'S
EVEN EVER DONE THIS BEFORE.
Kyle says NOT TO MY KNOWLEDGE.
Michaela says I DON'T THINK SO.
Phil says WHICH IS WHY WE HAVE NO
IDEA IF IT'S GOING TO WORK.
OKAY, SO, UH, MORE OF THESE,
'CAUSE THESE ARE THE SIDES.
BOTH Michaela and Kyle say YUP.
Phil says ROADWAY, AND THEN THE TOP.
BOTH Michaela and Kyle say YUP.
Phil says ALRIGHT, LET'S DO IT.
WHILE WE'RE WAITING,
IT'S A GOOD MOMENT TO POINT OUT
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT
MAKES OUR BRIDGE REALLY STRONG.
THAT IS TRIANGLES!
AS YOU CAN SEE, THE TRUSS,
OR THE SIDE OF OUR BRIDGE,
IS REALLY JUST
THREE BIG TRIANGLES.
TRIANGLES ARE VERY
STRONG SHAPES TO BUILD WITH,
AND THEY WORK GREAT IN BRIDGES.
NOW, IT'S TIME FOR
SCIENCE SO
SIMPLE A CAVEMAN COULD DO IT.
A Phil stands in a room holding a bone and dressed up as a caveman, in off he says
THIS IS A CAVEMAN.
HUH?
TODAY WE ARE GOING TO
TEACH THIS CAVEMAN HOW TO BUILD
A STRONG STRUCTURE.
The caveman grunts.
Phil says HERE ARE SOME BOXES.
Several boxes appear.
The caveman says HUH? HUH? HUH?
GO ON AND BUILD A SHELTER,
AND I'LL COME BACK
AND SEE HOW IT WORKED OUT.
The caveman GRUNTS.
Phil says NO, NO, NO. THAT'S NOT RIGHT.
The caveman says HUH?
Phil says YOU NEED TO BUILD
WALLS BY STACKING BOXES
ON TOP OF EACH OTHER.
THAT'S HOW YOU BUILD,
UNDERSTAND?
The caveman says OH! YEAH!
Phil says I'LL COME BACK LATER
AND SEE HOW IT WORKED OUT.
The caveman says grunts.
Later, as the caveman builds one tall wall, Phil says UH-OH.
DOES THAT LOOK RIGHT TO YOU?
The caveman says YEAH!
Phil says LOOK AT THOSE BOXES.
THEY'RE STACKED
ON TOP OF EACH OTHER.
The caveman grunts.
Phil says BUT IF THEY'RE IN TALL STACKS,
WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF
YOU PUSH ON THE WALL?
The caveman grunts and says I DON'T KNOW.
(WHISTLING)
As he touches one wall it collapses.
Phil says YOU SEE?
WALLS DON'T STAY UP
IF YOU BUILD LIKE THAT.
LET'S TRY AGAIN.
I'LL HELP YOU THIS TIME.
FIRST, LAY OUT THE FOUNDATION.
WHERE YOUR WALL SHOULD GO.
The caveman says OH.
He grunts as he places boxes in a large square foundation.
Phil says GOOD. NOW, LET'S MAKE
THE SECOND LEVEL.
NO, NO.
DON'T PUT IT RIGHT ON TOP.
YOU NEED TO STACK IN BETWEEN.
THAT'S HOW YOU
MAKE A STRONG WALL.
The caveman says OH, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!
Phil says OKAY. I'LL COME BACK LATER.
The caveman says YEAH, YEAH.
Later, as the caveman builds a fort around him alternating the boxes, Phil says NICE WORK.
WHY DON'T YOU GIVE IT A TRY?
The caveman grunts as he hits the walls with a bone, then says AH!
Phil says LOOKS STRONG,
BUT YOU FORGOT A BOX.
The caveman looks at one box left behind outside the fort and says HUH?!
HUH?
Phil says JOIN US NEXT TIME WHEN WE
TALK ABOUT HOW TO MAKE A DOOR.
The caveman says HUH?
Now standing outdoors, Phil says BUILDING A DOOR
IN A WALL IS HARD,
BECAUSE HOW DO YOU MAKE
A BIG GAPING HOLE IN YOUR WALL
WITHOUT YOUR WALL FALLING OVER?
WELL, PEOPLE HAVE COME UP
WITH LOTS OF WAYS TO PUT DOORS
AND WINDOWS IN WALLS
MADE OF STONE BLOCKS
OVER THE CENTURIES,
AND YOU CAN DO THIS AT HOME
WITH BOOKS LIKE I'M DOING
OR WITH BUILDING BLOCKS.
As he creates two stacks of books he says JUST GO UP UNTIL
YOU'RE HAPPY WITH THE HEIGHT,
AND THEN STACK EACH NEXT LAYER
A LITTLE CLOSER TO THE MIDDLE
UNTIL THE FINAL LAYER
TOUCHES JUST LIKE THIS...
He creates an arch of books, then says
AND THEN YOU
TAKE A BIG HEAVY BOOK
AND YOU DROP IT RIGHT ON TOP,
AND IT'S PRETTY STABLE,
AND YOU'VE JUST MADE A DOORWAY.
IT WORKS EVEN BETTER
IF IT'S PART OF A WALL,
BECAUSE YOU WANT
EXTRA WEIGHT ON THE OUTSIDE
OF THESE BOOKS HERE.
SO, OF COURSE,
I HAD TO BUILD ONE THAT
WAS PART OF A WHOLE WALL.
He steps over to another table, where there is a wall made of wooden blocks with a doorway in it.
Phil says THIS IS THE SAME
CORBELLED ARCH BUILT OUT OF
LITTLE BUILDING BLOCKS,
AND, AS YOU CAN SEE,
I WENT CLOSER AND CLOSER
TOGETHER UNTIL IT MEETS AT
THE TOP AND IT IS VERY STRONG.
He places a big and thick book on top of the archway, which does not collapse.
He says WHOA.
(LAUGHING)
NOW, LET'S MAX IT OUT!
As a fast-motion clip shows Phil and two assistants building a similar structure with big, long pieces of wood, Phil narrates
THE KIND OF ARCH WE'RE
BUILDING IS A CORBELLED ARCH,
AND THE SCIENCE MAX
BUILD TEAM AND I
ARE USING PIECES OF WOOD
CUT TO DIFFERENT LENGTHS.
HOW HIGH CAN IT GO?
WE CAN USE MY HEAD TO...
NO. OKAY. WAIT, WAIT.
IT TAKES A WHILE
TO GET TOGETHER,
BUT ONCE IT'S DONE, IT LOOKS
JUST LIKE THE KIND OF DOORWAYS
STONE BUILDINGS
HAD IN ANCIENT TIMES.
Now he stands under the finished arch and says
TA-DA! THERE YOU GO!
A MAXED OUT CORBELLED ARCH.
WE WENT STRAIGHT UP
UNTIL WE GO TO THESE LAYERS,
AND THEY GOT A LITTLE BIT
CLOSER AND CLOSER TO THE MIDDLE,
UNTIL THE LAST PIECE
IS ONE BIG SOLID PIECE
AND IF WE BUILT THIS RIGHT,
IT SHOULD BE STRONG
ENOUGH TO HOLD ME UP.
He hangs from the top of the arch and grunts.
(LAUGHING)
He says SCIENCE! WOO-HOO!
(WOMAN GASPING)
The structure collapses.
Phil says WELL, IT HELD ME UP
FOR A MINUTE, DIDN'T IT?
Phil narrates
WE ROLLED OUR PASTA
AND CONSTRUCTED ONE TRUSS.
NOW, WE'VE MADE
A LOT MORE ROLLS OF PASTA
AND CONNECTED THEM ALL
TOGETHER TO MAKE A SECOND TRUSS
AND A ROADWAY AS WELL AS
THE CROSS BRACES ON TOP,
AND WHEN WE GET IT ALL
TOGETHER WE END UP WITH...
Standing next to the finished pasta bridge, set between two ladders, Phil says
WHOA! PASTA BRIDGE!
Kyle and Michaela say PASTA BRIDGE!
(CHEERING)
Phil says WE DID IT! WE BUILT IT!
WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW LONG
IT WILL STAY UP, BUT IT'S UP,
IT'S DOING ITS BRIDGE
THING FOR NOW ANYWAY.
I AM VERY EXCITED
BECAUSE AS FAR AS WE KNOW,
I'M THE ONLY ONE TO TRY TO CROSS
A BRIDGE MADE OUT OF PASTA.
WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?
Kyle says I THINK I DON'T WANT
YOU TO BE THE LAST PERSON
TO CROSS A PASTA BRIDGE.
Phil says YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT,
BUT I'M GONNA DO IT.
I THINK WE'RE READY, YEAH?
Michaela says YEAH!
Phil says OKAY, HERE WE GO.
He carefully steps onto one of the floor beams of the bridge and it collapses.
He says AH!
OH, NO! THAT DOESN'T BODE
WELL FOR OUR PASTA BRIDGE.
WHAT HAPPENED HERE, KYLE?
Kyle says YOU PUT ALL YOUR WEIGHT
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE JOIST.
IT SNAPPED.
Phil says UH-HUH.
Michaela says IF ONLY THERE WAS A WAY
TO DISTRIBUTE YOUR WEIGHT.
MAYBE IF YOU CRAWLED?
Kyle says DO, LIKE, THE MILITARY
STYLE KIND OF...
Phil says OH, RIGHT. SO THAT I'M PUTTING
MY WEIGHT ON MORE THAN ONE SPOT.
Michaela says YEAH, YEAH.
Kyle says EXACTLY.
Phil says OH, WAIT A MINUTE.
THAT GIVES ME AN IDEA.
YOU GUYS STAY RIGHT THERE.
I KNOW WHAT TO DO!
I KNOW WHAT TO DO!
I KNOW WHAT TO DO!
Michaela says YOU'RE COMING BACK, RIGHT?
Wearing skis, Phil approaches the bridge and says SKIS DISTRIBUTE YOUR
WEIGHT OVER A LARGE AREA
SO YOU DON'T SINK IN THE SNOW,
THAT'S WHAT SKIS DO,
WHICH IS PERFECT
FOR THE PASTA BRIDGE.
(LAUGHING)
Phil says COME ON. COME ON.
OKAY, OKAY. HERE WE GO.
He slowly skis onto the bridge.
(CHUCKLING)
Michaela says CAREFULLY.
UH-HUH. IS IT WORKING?
Kyle says IT'S WORKING!
Phil says I HEAR SOME CRACKING.
Kyle says THIS MIGHT DO IT.
Michaela says TRY TO SPREAD YOUR LEGS APART.
SPREADING MY LEGS APART.
DISTRIBUTE YOUR WEIGHT.
DISTRIBUTE YOUR WEIGHT.
As he moves along, Phil says DISTRIBUTING MY WEIGHT.
IT'S SWAYING A LOT.
Michaela says OH, MAN.
Phil says OH.
WHOA!
WHOA!
Phil reaches the other side of the bridge.
(LAUGHING)
He says WHOA!
CROSSING THE PASTA BRIDGE!
WHOO! HIGH FIVES!
THERE YOU GO,
SCIENCE MAX:
EXPERIMENTS AT LARGE.
PASTA BRIDGE, SKIS.
WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT?
MAYBE A PASTA
CHAIRLIFT OF SOME SORT.
The caveman accidentally tears down his fort and says OH, NO!
Fast clips show Phil playing with the experiments shown before, as he says
SCIENCE!
WEAR IT. IT IS THE FASHION
ACCESSORY OF THE YEAR.
I WANT TO TRAVEL DOWN IT.
SHOULD HAVE MADE IT BIGGER.
(HUMMING)
SCIENCE! SCIENCE! SCIENCE!
HOW LONG DO
I HOLD THIS PIECE FOR?
Michaela says A LONG TIME.
Phil says GUYS?
GUYS?
THIS ISN'T FUNNY ANYMORE, GUYS.
Back to Miss K's living room, she holds up the book as she says
THE CLASS WAS AMAZED.
THEY STOOD THEIR QUITE DAZED,
UNCERTAIN OF WHAT TO DO.
BUT ONE BRIGHT YOUNG MAN
WAS OFF HATCHING A PLAN
WHICH STARTED WITH
MS. LEELA'S SHOE.
HM.
SOON, EACH LAD AND LASS
THERE AT BLUE RIVER PASS,
WAS WORKING TOGETHER AS ONE.
She holds up the book to show a drawing in which all the children work together to test different materials and gather wood.
Miss K says THE WHOLE CLASS IS REALLY
THINKING ABOUT WHAT THEY HAVE
TO USE TO CREATE SOMETHING
TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE,
AND I SEE VERY CLOSELY
THAT IGGY PECK
IS DRAWING A DESIGN,
KIND OF LOOKS LIKE IT
MIGHT BE A BRIDGE TO GET TO
THE OTHER SIDE AS EVERYONE
COLLECTS MATERIALS TO SEE
WHAT THEY CAN DO.
Miss K reads
AND WHEN SHE CAME TO,
MS. LEELA GREER KNEW
THAT SOMETHING QUITE
BRAVE HAD BEEN DONE.
SHE LOOKED IN THE AIR
AND SAW HANGING THERE
A STRUCTURE WITH
CABLES AND BRACES
AND ON THE FAR SIDE,
BEAMING WITH PRIDE,
THEY'RE EVER SO PROUD,
WERE 17 SMILING YOUNG FACES.
BOOTS, TREE ROOTS, AND STRING,
FRUIT ROLL-UPS AND THINGS,
SOME OF WHICH ONE
SHOULD NOT MENTION,
WERE STRETCHED RIDGE TO RIDGE
IN A GLORIOUS BRIDGE,
DANGLING FROM
SHOESTRING SUSPENSION.
In a drawing, Miss Greer wakes up alone on the island as the children wait for her on the other side of a makeshift suspension bridge.
Miss K says SO, THE WHOLE CLASS
CREATED A BRIDGE
USING THINGS THAT THEY FOUND.
AND MS. LEELA GREER,
SHE SEEMS QUITE SHOCKED
TO SEE WHAT
THEY'VE ACCOMPLISHED.
IT ALL BECAME CLEAR
TO MS. LEELA GREER
AS SHE CROSSED THAT
BRIDGE OVER THE STREAM,
THERE ARE WORSE THINGS TO DO
WHEN YOU'RE IN GRADE TWO,
THAN TO SPEND YOUR
TIME BUILDING A DREAM.
In the drawing, Leela crosses the bridge.
Miss K reads
NOW, EVERY WEEK
AT BLUE RIVER CREEK ELEMENTARY
IN SECOND GRADE,
ALL THE SCHOOL KIDS CAN HEAR
ALONG WITH MS. GREER
HOW THE WORLD'S GREATEST
BUILDINGS WERE MADE.
HM. SO, NOW, MS. LEELA GREER
TALKS ABOUT BUILDINGS.
THE WEEKLY GUEST SPEAKER,
IN T-SHIRT AND SNEAKERS,
TALKS OF BUILDING
FROM ROME TO QUEBEC.
OF COURSE, HE'S THE GUY
WHO BUILDS TOWERS FROM PIE,
THAT BRILLIANT...
THAT BRILLIANT YOUNG MAN,
IGGY PECK.
She closes the book and says
SO, TODAY, WE MADE PREDICTIONS.
WE ACTUALLY LOOKED
AT THE PICTURES,
WE ACTUALLY THOUGHT
ABOUT THE WORDS,
THAT HELPED US THINK ABOUT WHAT
MIGHT HAPPEN NEXT IN THE STORY.
SOME OF THE PREDICTIONS
THAT WE MADE WERE THAT HE MIGHT
POTENTIALLY BUILD A BRIDGE,
AND HE DID CREATE SOMETHING
WITH ALL OF HIS FRIENDS
HELPING HIM OUT.
SO, IT WASN'T JUST IGGY PECK
THAT DESIGNED AND CREATED
SOMETHING, HE ACTUALLY SOUGHT
THE HELP OF ALL OF HIS FRIENDS
TO BUILD A BRIDGE TO
GET TO THE OTHER SIDE,
AND THAT IS THE STORY
OF
IGGY PECK ARCHITECT.
IN THE BOOK,
IGGY PECK ARCHITECT,
IGGY IS AN ARCHITECT.
WE'RE GOING TO FIND
OUT A LITTLE BIT MORE
ABOUT WHAT ARCHITECTS DO.
A boy with wavy brown hair appears and says HI, I'M ELLERY.
IF I COULD BE ANYTHING,
I WOULD BE AN ARCHITECT.
Fast clips show children playing, wearing costumes, learning and having fun as a song plays that says
IMAGINE, IMAGINE
IMAGINE POWERFUL
IMAGINE COMICAL
IMAGINE MAGICAL
CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT?
Ellery appears and says HI, I'M ELLERY.
IF I COULD BE ANYTHING,
I WOULD BE AN ARCHITECT.
He draws a castle, then says
AN ARCHITECT DESIGNS BUILDINGS.
FIRST I WOULD DRAW WHAT I WANT
THE BUILDING TO LOOK LIKE.
A BIG TALL RECTANGULAR BUILDING
WITH LOTS OF SQUARE WINDOWS.
OR MAYBE A TRIANGULAR BUILDING.
In animation a triangular building appears and collapses.
Ellery says OOPS. BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD.
I WOULD MAKE A WHOLE
BUNCH OF SQUARE HOUSES
WITH POINTY TRIANGLE ROOFS
FOR MY FRIENDS AND I TO LIVE IN.
HM.
AH-HA!
I WOULD DRAW A SUPER
TALL BUILDING WITH A SLIDE
THAT GOES FROM
THE TOP OF THE 99TH FLOOR
RIGHT DOWN TO THE GROUND. WHEE!
In animation he slides down a swirling slide, then looks dizzy.
(GROANING)
He continues ONCE I'VE GOT THE DESIGN,
CALLED MY BLUEPRINTS,
IT'S TIME TO BUILD IT.
I WOULD SHOW
THE BUILDERS MY PLANS,
AND I WOULD DECIDE THE MATERIALS
THAT THE BUILDERS USE.
MY BUILDING WOULD BE
MADE OF METAL AND WOOD
TO MAKE IT SUPER STRONG,
BUT INSIDE I WOULD USE BOUNCY
MARSHMALLOWS FOR THE CARPETS.
WHOO! FUN! WOO-HOO!
MY BUILDINGS
WOULD BE REALLY TALL.
EVEN TALLER THAN THE MOON.
IT WOULD TAKE 400 PEOPLE
AND A MILLION HOURS TO BUILD.
In animation, a team of people works on a building.
(BANGING)
Ellery says TA-DA!
WHEN THE BUILDING IS ALL DONE
I WOULD CUT A BIG RIBBON
TO WELCOME EVERYONE
TO THEIR NEW HOME.
As he speaks, everything he mentions comes alive in cartoon animation.
He continues EVERYBODY WOULD CLAP
AND I WOULD TAKE A BOW.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU.
THEN WE WOULD ALL TAKE
THE ELEVATOR TO THE TOP
AND RIDE SUPER FAST
DOWN THE SLIDE BACK
TO THE GROUND AGAIN.
WHEE!
I'D GO 50 TIMES.
IF I WAS AN ARCHITECT,
I WOULD ALWAYS WEAR A BOWTIE
TO IMPRESS PEOPLE LIKE A KING
AND HIS BEST FRIEND
THE ROCK STAR.
THEY WOULD ASK ME TO BUILD THEM
TWO SUPER CASTLES SIDE BY SIDE
SO THEY CAN VISIT
EACH OTHER ALL THE TIME.
I WOULD DESIGN A CASTLE
WITH TWO HUGE SQUARES,
AND ZIGGY ZAGGY
LITTLE SQUARES ON TOP.
I'D MAKE THE CASTLE GREY,
THEN I WOULD BUILD
A GOLDEN BRIDGE
TO CONNECT THEM
SO THEY COULD VISIT EACH OTHER
WHENEVER THEY WANTED TO.
OH, AND A SUPER TALL TOWER
FOR THE DRAGON
TO ROCK AND ROLL IN.
I LOVE BEING AN ARCHITECT.
As Ellery hops and dances, a song plays that says
CAN YOU IMAGINE BEING
ANYTHING YOU WANT TO BE?
CAN YOU IMAGINE THERE'S
A WORLD FULL OF FANTASY?
AND IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT
LOTS IT BECOMES SO REAL
DID YOU KNOW?
DID YOU KNOW? DID YOU KNOW?
THAT YOU CAN DO
ANYTHING YOU WANT TO DO
IMAGINE THIS OR THAT,
THINK OF SOMETHING NEW
AND YOU CAN ALWAYS
CHANGE A THING OR TWO
ANYTHING YOU WANT,
IT'S REALLY UP TO YOU
BUH-BUH-BUH-BUH,
BUH-BUH-DUH-BUH-DUH
BUH-BUH-BUH-BUH,
BUH-BUH-DUH-BUH-DUH
BUH-BUH-BUH-BUH,
BUH-BUH-DUH-BUH-DUH
BUH-BUH-BUH-BUH,
BUH-BUH-DUH-BUH-DUH
BUH-BUH-DUH-BUH-DUH,
BUH-BUH-DUH-BUH-DUH
CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT?
Ellery says I'M ELLERY AND I'M AN ARCHITECT.
IMAGINE THAT!
End credits roll.
Now Miss K stands next to a wall with a sheet of paper stuck to it.
She says OKAY, SO. IN MY PREDICTION,
I PREDICTED THAT IGGY WOULD BE
STUCK FOR RECESS IN THE OFFICE
WITH MR. HOWE.
SO, I'M GOING TO DRAW WHAT
I PREDICT MIGHT HAPPEN NEXT
IN THE STORY.
I'M GONNA DRAW IGGY PECK.
As she draws, she says
SO, THIS IS IGGY.
I'M ALSO GOING TO DRAW A DESK.
THIS IS MR. HOWE.
THAT'S HIS OFFICE.
IGGY HAS A BIT OF HAIR.
AND I PREDICTED HE WOULD BE...
THAT HE WOULD BE BUILDING...
MAYBE I'LL USE BLUE
TO DESIGN SOMETHING THAT
HE WAS THINKING.
AND I'VE GOT A FEW
ERASERS UP AT THE TOP.
ONE MORE, MAYBE A PENCIL.
SO, THIS IS MY PREDICTION.
I PREDICT THAT
IGGY PECK IS GOING TO BE
IN AT RECESS BUILDING
USING PENS AND ERASERS
AND A CRAYON FOUND
ON MR. HOWE'S DESK.
THIS IS MY PREDICTION.
Now standing next to a desk with a bridge made of building blocks sitting on it, Miss K says SO, I CHALLENGE YOU
TODAY TO THINK ABOUT HOW
YOU MIGHT HELP IGGY
GET TO THE OTHER SIDE,
HIM AND HIS CLASSMATES.
SO, I'VE KIND OF DEMON...
I WANT TO DEMONSTRATE TO YOU
AND SHARE WITH YOU WHAT
IT IS THAT YOU MIGHT DO
TO CHALLENGE YOURSELF AT HOME
TO THINK ABOUT HOW YOU MIGHT
CREATE SOMETHING TO
GET TO THE OTHER SIDE.
OVER HERE I HAVE A TIN,
AS WELL AS ON THE OTHER SIDE.
THIS REPRESENTS THE HILL
THAT THEY GOT STUCK ON,
HIS WHOLE CLASS.
SO, I WANT YOU TO THINK
ABOUT WHAT YOU MIGHT DO
TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE.
I HAVE, AT HOME, BLOCKS.
SO, I'M ACTUALLY
USING THESE BLOCKS TO
ACTUALLY DESIGN A BRIDGE
TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE
SO THAT THEY CAN CROSS
AND MAKE THEIR WAY
TO THE OTHER SIDE SAFELY.
I CHALLENGE YOU TO THINK
ABOUT WHAT YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO
COLLECT AND GATHER JUST LIKE
THE CHILDREN DID IN THE BOOK
AND THINK ABOUT HOW
YOU MIGHT CREATE SOMETHING
TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE.
SO, TODAY, AS WE READ THE STORY
OF
IGGY PECK, ARCHITECT,
WE MADE PREDICTIONS.
WE LOOKED AT THE ILLUSTRATIONS,
AND WE ALSO READ WORDS
TO HELP US MAKE
SENSE OF THE STORY
AND WHAT MIGHT COME NEXT.
WHEN WE PREDICT,
WE ACTUALLY LOOK AT CLUES
THROUGH ILLUSTRATIONS,
OR EVEN WORDS TO HELP US
THINK ABOUT WHAT'S
COMING NEXT IN A STORY,
AND THAT HELPS US
MAKE SENSE OF STORIES.
SO, THANK YOU ONCE
AGAIN FOR JOINING ME
IN READING
IGGY PECK, ARCHITECT.
I'M SO GLAD YOU
WERE ABLE TO JOIN
AND I'M REALLY EXCITED
TO SEE ALL THE THINGS
THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE DESIGNED.
THANK YOU SO MUCH
FOR JOINING US.
MISS K SAYS GOODBYE,
UNTIL ANOTHER TIME.
(soft music plays)
