Transcript: Passion Projects Part 3
(SOFT MUSIC PLAYS)
AN ANIMATED TITLE AGAINST A SUNNY SKY READS "TVOKIDS POWER HOUR OF LEARNING. TEACHER EDITION."
IN OFF, LAURA SAYS WELCOME TO TVOKIDS
POWER HOUR OF LEARNING.
TODAY'S JUNIOR LESSON: PASSION PROJECTS PART 3.
Teacher Arianna stands in a room with a large painting hanging behind her. She's in her early thirties, with short curly brown hair. She's wearing a white sweater and silver hoop earrings.
A caption appears on screen. It reads "Teacher Arianna. Junior 4-6."
She says WELCOME BACK TO PART THREE
OF PASSION PROJECTS.
AS YOU ALREADY KNOW, MY NAME
IS ARIANNA AND I LOVE TO DESIGN.
OVER THE LAST
COUPLE OF SESSIONS,
WE'VE HAD THE CHANCE TO BE
LEARNING SOME OF THE TOOLS
THAT ENGINEERS AND DESIGNERS USE
AS THEY SOLVE
PROBLEMS FOR PEOPLE.
THE LAST TIME WE WERE TOGETHER,
WE STARTED THE PROCESS
THAT WAS MY FAVOURITE PART
OF THE PROCESS: IDEATION.
The caption changes to "Ideation."
Arianna says IT'S THE PART WHERE WE
START TO BE ABLE TO CREATE
SOME REALLY INNOVATIVE,
OR NEW AND EXCITING IDEAS,
AS WE'RE TRYING
TO SOLVE OUR PROBLEM.
SO, WE DID AN ACTIVITY AND
IT WAS CALLED CRAZY EIGHTS
AND IT WAS OUR CHANCE
TO REALLY QUICKLY JUST JOT DOWN
IDEAS THAT CAME TO MIND.
SOME OF YOU MIGHT HAVE
FOUND IT A LITTLE BIT STRESSFUL
BECAUSE WE HAD
TO MOVE REALLY QUICKLY.
WE HAD 40 SECONDS PER BOX!
SO, WHAT I'M GONNA DO IS I'M
GONNA REMIND YOU OF MY PROBLEM.
IT WAS LANDFILLS
GETTING FILLED UP BY CLOTHING.
AND I WAS ACTUALLY SOLVING
THE PROBLEM FOR TEENAGERS,
PEOPLE WHO WERE MY STUDENTS,
THAT I WAS WORKING WITH.
SO, I'M GONNA SHARE WITH YOU
MY CRAZY EIGHTS AGAIN,
JUST TO KIND OF GIVE
YOU A LITTLE REFRESHER
TO REMIND YOU KIND OF
WHAT I WAS THINKING I COULD USE
IN ORDER TO HELP ME
TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.
She shows a piece of paper divided into 8 parts, each of which contains drawings.
She says SO, BOX NUMBER ONE, I THOUGHT
ABOUT A CLOTHING EXCHANGE.
A PLACE AT SCHOOL
WHERE PEOPLE COULD GO
AND THEY COULD EXCHANGE CLOTHING
AND HAVE THE CHANCE TO DROP
THINGS OFF AND PICK THEM UP.
NUMBER TWO,
I WAS THINKING ABOUT, UM,
SOME SORT OF PUBLIC SERVICE,
OR CAMPAIGN TO GET PEOPLE MORE
AWARE ABOUT WHAT THEY WERE DOING
WITH THEIR CLOTHING ITEMS.
WE COULD HAVE POSTERS AS WELL AS
ANNOUNCEMENTS ON THE PA SYSTEM
SO THAT PEOPLE
COULD UNDERSTAND THEIR IMPACT.
BOX NUMBER THREE,
I THOUGHT ABOUT AN APP.
AND IT WAS AN APP
THAT HELPS TO CONNECT DIYERS
SO THEY COULD SHARE VIDEOS
AND THEY COULD KIND OF HELP YOU
TO THINK ABOUT HOW YOU COULD
DO IT YOURSELF IF YOU WANTED
TO BE ABLE TO CREATE SOMETHING
TOTALLY NEW AND AWESOME
FOR YOUR CLOTHING ITEM.
BOX NUMBER FOUR, I CONTINUED
THINKING ABOUT THAT APP.
AND I THOUGHT,
"HM, WHAT IF WE HAD A PLACE
WHERE PEOPLE
COULD SWAP CLOTHING?"
THEY COULD ACTUALLY
TAKE THEIR ITEM,
PUT UP ONLINE WHAT THEY WANTED,
OR MAYBE WHAT THEY DIDN'T WANT,
AND THEY COULD FIND A LOCAL
SAFE PLACE IN THE COMMUNITY
TO SWAP IT WITH SOMEONE ELSE.
I'M GONNA FOLD MY SHEET AGAIN
AND I'M GONNA SHOW YOU
THE BOTTOM HERE.
THIS WAS MY FIFTH IDEA.
I THOUGHT ABOUT HAVING SOME
COMMUNITY CLOTHING STORE.
IT COULD BE IN A CHURCH,
A SYNAGOGUE, A MOSQUE,
A COMMUNITY CENTRE,
ANYWHERE WHERE YOU COULD
POSSIBLY HAVE A PLACE TO SELL
MAYBE SOME CLOTHING
THAT YOU EITHER REPURPOSED,
OR SOME THINGS THAT YOU ARE
NO LONGER INTERESTED IN.
AND THAT COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION
WOULD BE ABLE TO USE THAT MONEY
FOR ANYTHING ELSE
THAT THEY WERE WORKING ON.
BOX NUMBER SIX,
IT WAS A CONTINUATION
OF BOX NUMBER TWO.
YOU'LL NOTICE
SOMETIMES THAT HAPPENS.
SO, WHAT I WAS THINKING
THAT I WAS GONNA DO
WAS I WAS GONNA
KEEP GOING WITH THIS IDEA
OF GETTING PEOPLE AWARE
ABOUT THEIR IMPACT,
BUT I WAS ACTUALLY
GONNA GIVE THEM POINTS.
MAKE IT KIND OF LIKE A GAME.
THEY COULD, YOU KNOW, GET SOME
POINTS AND REDEEM THOSE POINTS
FOR EVERY TIME THEY DID
SOMETHING REALLY GREAT.
THEIR POINTS COULD GO
TOWARDS AN EXPERIENCE,
LIKE THE MOVIES OR SOMETHING.
BOX SEVEN WAS ONE
THAT I WAS THINKING ABOUT
THAT I THOUGHT WAS REALLY COOL.
YOU COULD START A COMPANY
AND IT COULD BE A PLACE
WHERE PEOPLE COULD
DONATE THEIR OLD CLOTHING.
AND THEN WHAT YOU COULD DO
WAS REPURPOSE THEM
AND THE MONEY WOULD GO TOWARDS
KEEPING YOUR STAFF THERE,
SO THAT THEY COULD
CONTINUE TO REPURPOSE,
OR MAKE AMAZING,
NEW CLOTHING THAT WE COULD SELL.
AND THEN, MY FINAL IDEA HERE
WAS REPURPOSING CLOTHING
WITH TECH.
IT WAS AN IDEA.
I THOUGHT ABOUT HAVING YOUR OWN,
YOU KNOW,
THEME MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND
PLAYING AS YOU WALKED AROUND.
IMAGINE IT
COMING OUT OF YOUR COAT
OR COMING OUT
OFF OF YOUR T-SHIRT.
I THOUGHT IT'D BE PRETTY COOL.
SO, THESE WERE MY IDEAS.
AND THE LAST TIME THAT WE LEFT,
I ASKED YOU
TO LOOK AT YOUR SHEET OF PAPER
THAT WAS SIMILAR TO THIS.
I WANTED YOU
TO THINK ABOUT YOUR IDEA.
WHAT WAS THE ONE THAT YOU REALLY
WANTED TO BE ABLE TO WORK ON?
AND THEN, I WANT YOU TO BE ABLE
TO NOW TELL ME WHAT IT IS.
SO, TAKE A COUPLE OF MINUTES
AND THINK ABOUT IT.
REMEMBER FOR THIS PROCESS WE'RE
ALWAYS NARROWING THINGS DOWN.
WE START OFF REALLY, REALLY BIG
WHERE WE TALKED ABOUT
ALL YOUR PASSIONS
AND THEN WE PICKED ONE.
AND THEN, WE TALKED ABOUT
ALL OF THE PROBLEMS,
AND THEN WE PICKED ONE
THAT WE WERE GONNA WORK ON.
AND THEN FROM THERE
WE GOT A WHOLE BUNCH OF IDEAS.
NOW, AGAIN, WE'RE PICKING ONE.
SO WE'RE ALWAYS NARROWING DOWN
AND FOCUSING ON THINGS.
SO, NOW IT'S
YOUR CHANCE TO PICK.
SO I'M GONNA PICK.
THE BOX THAT I AM GOING TO PICK
IS GOING TO BE BOX NUMBER FOUR.
SO, I'M GONNA DO
A LITTLE CIRCLE HERE.
AGAIN, IT'S NOT
A PRETTY CIRCLE, MY FRIENDS.
I MADE SOME MISTAKES THERE
AS I WAS CIRCLING.
BOX NUMBER FOUR, THE APP.
THAT'S WHAT
I'M GONNA FOCUS IN ON.
NOT A VERY PRETTY CIRCLE.
IT'S ALL RIGHT.
I WANT YOU
TO BE ABLE TO THINK ABOUT
"WHAT'S THE IDEA
THAT YOU'RE GONNA WORK ON?"
SO, HOPEFULLY YOU ALREADY
HAVE IN MIND THE PROBLEM
THAT YOU'RE SOLVING
AND WHO YOU'RE SOLVING IT FOR.
AND IF YOU WEREN'T HERE FOR PART
ONE AND PART TWO, DON'T WORRY.
YOU CAN ALWAYS GO BACK ONLINE,
CHECK THEM OUT, AND SEE,
SO THAT YOU CAN
GET YOURSELF CAUGHT UP TO SPEED.
BUT, WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO TODAY
IS I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT
A COOL IDEA THAT
YOU THOUGHT ABOUT TRYING BEFORE.
MAYBE IT'S SOMETHING LIKE...
OH, IF I WERE TO SHOW YOU THIS.
I'VE GOT ALL THESE MARKERS
AND I PUT THEM IN THIS BIN.
IT'S ALL RIGHT.
IT'S NOT GREAT.
BUT I WONDER IF YOU COULD
CREATE A BETTER SOLUTION FOR ME
SO I CAN ACTUALLY
HOLD MY MARKERS IN THERE,
PICK UP THE ONE THAT I WANT.
ANYTHING THAT YOU REALLY
WANT TO BE ABLE TO DESIGN
THAT SOLVES A PROBLEM
FOR SOMEONE IS FAIR GAME.
SO, THINK UP...
THINK UP OF A PROBLEM...
SORRY.
SEE?
WE'RE GONNA MAKE MISTAKES.
THINK UP A PROBLEM.
AND THEN TRY AND SEE
IF YOU CAN SOLVE IT WITH US.
WE'RE GONNA TRY AND USE SOME
OF THE TOOLS, SOME NEW ONES,
IN ORDER TO KIND OF MOVE
OUR IDEAS A LITTLE BIT FURTHER.
SO, FOR TODAY'S LESSON,
WE ARE GONNA NEED A FEW THINGS.
YOU'RE GONNA NEED
A SHEET OF PAPER.
As she shows a blank piece of paper she says I'VE GOT THIS ONE HERE.
AND YOU'RE ALSO
GONNA NEED A WRITING TOOL.
IT CAN BE ANYTHING,
A PEN, A PAPER.
SORRY.
A PEN, A PENCIL, A MARKER.
ANYTHING AT ALL
THAT YOU CAN WRITE WITH.
SO, YOU DON'T
HAVE THEM HANDY, IT'S OKAY.
YOU CAN FEEL FREE TO GO GRAB
THEM AND COME RIGHT BACK.
BUT IF YOU ALREADY DO,
THAT'S GREAT.
WHAT WE'RE GOING TO
START OFF WITH TODAY IS
I WANT YOU
TO CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO.
I'M STARTING TO THINK
THAT
WHEN I GROW UP
IS BECOMING ONE
OF MY FAVOURITE SHOWS.
IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'RE GONNA
LEARN ABOUT AN IMPORTANT TOOL
THAT WE DO, OR WE USE, IN ORDER
TO BRING OUR IDEAS TO LIFE.
IT'S NOT JUST FOUND IN
VIDEOGAMES OR IN MOVIES,
BUT STORYBOARDING
IS AN INCREDIBLE TOOL
THAT DESIGNERS ALSO USE.
SO, I WANT YOU
TO BE THINKING OF YOUR IDEA.
WHAT'S THAT ONE THING THAT YOU
THINK IS GONNA BE THE BEST IDEA
TO SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM?
AND THEN I WANT YOU TO WATCH
MIKAELA AND MICHELLE IN ACTION.
LET'S GO.
Mikaela pops up against a colourful animated background. She?s around 12, with mid-length curly brown hair, and wears a blue sweater.
[WHOOSH]
She says MY NAME'S MIKAELA, AND SINCE
I CAN REMEMBER,
I'VE DREAMT ABOUT WHAT I'LL BE
WHEN I GROW UP!
THERE ARE SO MANY COOL JOBS,
SO I DECIDED TO TRY THEM ALL.
In animation, gear from different jobs appears on her: an astronaut?s helmet, a construction worker's vest and helmet, a chef's hat and apron, and a police officer's hat and badge.
She says I BUILT AN AWESOME STUDIO IN
MY GARAGE,
SO I CAN MAKE AND SHARE VIDEOS
ABOUT MY JOURNEY.
She pops up in her garage. The place has a multi-coloured tile floor, hangers with different uniforms, a bike, a desk, and a colourful back wall with a graffiti that reads "When I grow up!"
She says IT'S ALL ABOUT DISCOVERING
WHAT I'LL BE
WHEN I GROW UP!
The name of the show appears in purple surrounded by colourful silhouettes of different animals and shapes. It reads "When I grow up."
A film countdown clocks appears.
As she plays videogames, Mikaela says COME ON.
COME ON, COME ON, COME ON!
(GRUNTING)
I JUST CAN'T BEAT THIS LEVEL.
THIS GAME IS HARD,
BUT VIDEO GAMES ARE SO AWESOME.
EVEN WHEN YOU LOSE.
THE CHARACTERS AND SCENES
ARE SO LIFE-LIKE
THEY'RE LIKE LITTLE MOVIES
THAT YOU CONTROL.
IN FACT, DID YOU KNOW
SOME GAMES USE REAL ACTORS
TO PLAY THE CHARACTERS
IN THE GAME?
IT'S CALLED MOTION CAPTURE.
THE ACTOR'S MOTIONS ARE
CAPTURED WITH SPECIAL CAMERAS.
AND IT'S SOMEONE'S JOB
TO PUT IT ALL TOGETHER.
COME TO THINK OF IT
THAT WOULD BE AN AMAZING JOB!
WORKING WITH ARTISTS,
AND DESIGNERS, AND ACTORS
TO MAKE THE MOST
AMAZING VIDEO GAME SCENES
THAT WOULD BLOW YOUR MIND.
WELL, THAT SETTLES IT.
I'M GONNA HELP MAKE
MOTION CAPTURE HAPPEN,
SO I CAN HELP MAKE
VIDEO GAMES WHEN I GROW UP.
She continues playing videogames. Then, she appears walking down a sidewalk on a sunny day.
She says I FOUND A VIDEO GAME COMPANY
THAT HAS A MASSIVE STUDIO.
I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE
HOW BIG IT IS.
As she walks into a large office with a sign that reads "Ubisoft" she says IMPRESSIVE, NICELY DECORATED,
NOT AS A BIG AS I THOUGHT
A PERFORMANCE CAPTURE ROOM
WOULD BE, BUT...
A young woman walks up to her and says HI, MIKAELA.
Mikaela says HI, MICHELLE.
Michelle has chin-length curly black hair.
Michelle says WELCOME TO UBISOFT TORONTO.
Mikaela says THANKS.
The caption changes to "Michelle. Shoot Manager."
Mikaela says MICHELLE IS
THE SHOOT MANAGER HERE.
SHE WORKS WITH TONS OF CREATIVE
PEOPLE TO HELP TURN AN IDEA
INTO A VIDEOGAME.
Michelle says READY TO HAVE SOME FUN?
Mikaela says OF COURSE.
Michelle says THE STUDIO'S THIS WAY.
Mikaela says OH!
As they walk into a huge office space with wooden floors and several large desks with computers on them, Michelle says OVER 650 PEOPLE
WORK HERE RIGHT NOW.
Mikaela says WHOA!
THAT'S A LOT.
AND THEY ALL WORK ON VIDEOGAMES?
Michelle says YEP, YEP.
SOME OF THEM I CAN TALK ABOUT,
BUT OTHERS ARE TOP SECRET.
Mikaela says OOH!
They walk into a large room with a high ceiling, dozens of powerful white lights and dozens of cameras all around.
Michelle says MIKAELA, WELCOME TO OUR
PERFORMANCE CAPTURE STUDIO.
Mikaela says WHOA!
SO MANY CAMERAS.
Michelle says YEAH, YEAH, PART OF MAKING
VIDEOGAMES IS BRINGING ACTORS,
STUNT PEOPLE,
AND SOMETIMES EVEN ANIMALS
INTO THIS STUDIO
AND TRACKING THEIR MOTION.
AS YOU CAN SEE, WE'RE
SURROUNDED BY 80 T-160 CAMERAS.
SO THAT MEANS
IT CAN SEE YOUR MOVEMENT
FROM EVERY SINGLE ANGLE.
Suddenly wearing sunglasses and a red feather boa, Mikaela says EIGHTY CAMERAS?
I'M READY FOR MY CLOSE UP.
Now she plays an arcade game.
(VIDEO GAME CHARACTER DYING)
She says CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT ROOM?
USING JUST YOUR IMAGINATION
YOU CAN TURN IT INTO ANYTHING.
AND, THE ACTORS
CAN BECOME ANYONE OR ANYTHING.
BUT, IN ORDER TO ACT,
YOU NEED TO HAVE A STORY.
SO, IT'S TIME
TO FIRE UP THE OLD IMAGINATION.
In animation, Mikaela turns into a cartoon with cogs turning inside her brain.
Now she and AN IMPORTANT FIRST STEP
WHEN YOU'RE TELLING
A STORY IS STORYBOARDING.
Mikaela says WHAT'S A STORYBOARD?
Michelle says A STORYBOARD IS A SERIES
OF PICTURES OR PANELS
WHICH SHOW THE ACTOR WHAT
THEY'RE GOING TO BE DOING
ON THE P-CAP STAGE.
Mikaela says IS THAT WHAT
WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING?
Michelle says YEAH.
WHAT KIND OF STORY
DO YOU WANNA TELL?
Mikaela says I WANNA TELL A STORY
ABOUT A ROBOT
WHO WANTS TO BECOME A DANCER.
Michelle says WELL, GOOD NEWS.
THE ONLY LIMIT
IS YOUR IMAGINATION.
SO, GET DRAWING.
As she draws a robot inside a square, Mikaela says ONE DAY THERE WAS A ROBOT.
As she draws out her ideas in different squares on a whiteboard, she says
HE HAD AN IDEA
THAT HE WANTED TO DANCE.
HE PRACTISED AND PRACTISED.
Michelle says AND WHAT KIND OF DANCER
DOES THE ROBOT WANNA BE?
Mikaela says WELL, HE USUALLY
DOES ALL DANCES,
BUT HE FOCUSES ON, LIKE,
CONTEMPORARY AND BALLET.
Michelle says OOH, NICE.
Mikaela says AND THEN, ONE DAY,
HE BECAME A DANCER.
Mikaela says AND SCENE.
Michelle says BEAUTIFUL.
NOW, THE STORYBOARD'S DONE.
DO YOU WANNA GO
CHECK OUT THE P-CAP STAGE?
Mikaela says YEAH.
Michelle says LET'S DO IT.
Mikaela says OKAY.
Now Mikaela stands in a room next to a whiteboard and says HEY!
I'M INTERRUPTING YOUR REGULARLY
SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING
BECAUSE EVER SINCE
MICHELLE TAUGHT ME
HOW TO DO A STORYBOARD,
I CAN'T STOP.
WATCH THIS.
In fast-motion, she draws out a story in four squares. These show a baby, a girl, a young woman and an elderly woman bent over a walking cane.
She says SEE?
I EVEN PUT TOGETHER A STORYBOARD
THAT TELLS YOU MICHELLE'S STORY.
SO YOU WON'T BE BORED.
CHECK IT OUT.
In animation, a cartoon-style storyboard shows a girl with curly dark hair playing videogames inside her room.
Mikaela says WHEN MICHELLE WAS GROWING UP
SHE LOVED VIDEOGAMES AND MOVIES.
SO IN UNIVERSITY,
SHE STUDIED RADIO BROADCASTING,
THEN WORKED IN TV PRODUCTION.
Drawings show an older Michelle hosting a radio show and using a video camera on a filming set. Then, she holds up a controller and says "I got it!"
Mikaela says THAT JOB PREPARED HER
FOR WORK IN VIDEOGAMES.
MICHELLE'S EXPERIENCE
HELPED HER JUMP RIGHT INTO
A SHOOT MANAGER ROLE.
YOU NEVER KNOW
WHERE YOUR JOB WILL TAKE YOU.
Other drawings show Michelle directing work inside the room with dozens of cameras. An actor wearing a special suit says "I'm an alien!" as Michelle says "I'm a robot!"
Mikaela says MAYBE A STORY ABOUT AN ALARM
CLOCK THAT LIKES TO SLEEP IN,
OR, A TOASTER
THAT'S ALLERGIC TO BREAD,
OR A LIGHTBULB
THAT LOVES THE DARK.
AH, DON'T MIND ME.
I'M IN CREATIVE MODE.
SPEAKING OF WHICH.
BACK TO THE STUDIO.
Back in the studio, Mikaela wears a special suit like the one seen on cartoon.
She says IT'S FINALLY TIME TO TRY
MY HAND AT PERFORMANCE CAPTURE,
SO I'M ALL SUITED UP.
I'M READY.
Michelle says THIS IS EDWIN.
HE'S GONNA START
MARKERING YOU UP.
As she shakes hands with Edwin, Mikaela says HI, EDWIN.
Edwin is in his twenties, tall, clean-shaven, with short black hair.
As he places adhesive markers on the suit, Michelle says HE'S GONNA PUT THESE
RETROREFLECTIVE MARKERS
ALL OVER YOUR SUIT.
SO, YOU'LL SEE
THAT YOU ALREADY HAVE SOME
ON YOUR HANDS AND FEET,
BUT THEY HAVE TO GO ALL OVER
NEAR YOUR JOINTS ON YOUR BODY.
SO, WHERE
YOUR BODY BENDS AND MOVES
SO THAT THE SYSTEM CAN TRACK
YOUR MOVEMENT ACCURATELY.
Mikaela says SO WHY DO WE NEED THE MARKERS?
Michelle says THE CAMERAS
ACTUALLY EMIT INFRARED LIGHT
AND THE HUMAN EYE
CAN'T SEE THIS,
BUT THESE LITTLE MARKERS
DEFINITELY CAN.
THAT INFRARED LIGHT
CAUSES THESE GUYS TO GLOW
AND THAT LIGHT IS REFLECTED
BACK INTO THE CAMERAS.
AND THEN THE COMPUTER
CAN SEE YOUR BODY AS A SKELETON.
Mikaela says I'M PRETTY SURE
I HAVE A SKELETON.
Michelle says I GUESS THE COMPUTER
WILL DECIDE.
LAST, BUT NOT LEAST,
WE'RE GONNA PUT GLASSES ON YOU
SO THAT THE SYSTEM CAN
UNDERSTAND THAT YOU HAVE A HEAD.
As she puts on special glasses, Mikaela says I HAVE A HEAD.
OR AT LEAST NOW I DO.
(LAUGHING)
Michelle says SO YOU CAN MOVE
AROUND A LITTLE BIT.
GET COMFORTABLE IN THE SUIT.
THIS IS YOUR NEW BODY.
The three move around and dance.
Then, Michelle says OKAY, MIKAELA, FIRST STEP, WE'RE
GONNA RUN YOU THROUGH A ROM.
IT STANDS FOR RANGE OF MOTION.
IT'S BASICALLY
A BUNCH OF EXERCISES
WHICH ALLOWS THE COMPUTER
TO CREATE A VIRTUAL SKELETON.
Mikaela says RANGE OF MOTION.
GOT IT.
Michelle says DO YOU WANNA START?
Mikaela says YES.
Michelle says TAKE IT AWAY, EDWIN.
Edwin says CAN I GET YOU
TO T POSE, MIKAELA?
Mikaela holds up her arms forming a T.
As she moves, a stick figure on a computer screen performs the same movements.
Edwin says OKAY, NOW HANDS ON YOUR SIDES.
BRING THEM BACK UP.
DOWN, AND UP.
AND THEN EXTEND.
WIGGLE YOUR FINGERS.
NOW, MAKE A FIST.
OPEN UP.
ON THIS SIDE.
OVER AGAIN, THEN UP.
AND BIG CIRCLES WITH YOUR ARMS.
GO THE OTHER WAY.
OKAY, NOW TAKE
FOUR STEPS FORWARD.
Mikaela says ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR.
Edwin says AND FOUR STEPS BACKWARDS.
Mikaela says ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR.
Edwin says SIGNATURE MOVE.
He performs a karate kick.
(MAKING KARATE SOUNDS)
Mikaela imitates the motion.
Edwin says AWESOME.
Michelle says SO THIS ROM
IS ALLOWING THE COMPUTER
TO CREATE A VIRTUAL SKELETON.
ONCE WE HAVE YOUR SKELETON,
IT'S GOING TO BE DRIVEN BY
THE MARKERS ALL OVER YOUR BODY.
AND THAT'S GOING TO ALLOW US
TO SCALE YOUR SKELETON UP,
SCALE IT DOWN,
SO THAT DIFFERENT
KINDS OF CHARACTERS
CAN BE DRIVEN BY YOUR BODY.
Mikaela says SO, I CAN BECOME
A 10,000 POUND GORILLA?
OR AN INTERDIMENSIONAL
SNAKE MONSTER?
OR A RADIOACTIVE,
FIRE-BREATHING DINOSAUR?
In cartoons, she turns into a fire-breathing T-rex.
(ROARING)
Mikaela says BUT WHAT IF I WANNA USE A PROP?
LIKE A BANANA?
OR A PAINT BRUSH?
OR A SNEAKER?
(SNIFFING)
Michelle says WE MARK OUR PROPS
IN THE SAME WAY
THAT WE MARK OUR ACTORS.
FOR EXAMPLE, THIS FLOWER.
She picks up a wooden flower with several markers on it and says OUR MARKERS ARE RIGHT HERE,
HERE, HERE, AND HERE.
Mikaela says OKAY, COOL.
Michelle says SO, MIKAELA, NOW THAT
WE HAVE YOUR VIRTUAL SKELETON,
IT'S TIME TO MEET THE NEW YOU.
She moves a large flat screen up to Mikaela. The screen shows a three-dimensional character in a spacesuit. It moves exactly like Mikaela, in real time.
Mikaela says WHOA!
IS THAT REALLY ME?
Michelle says YEP.
WELL, THAT'S YOU DRIVING JUDGE.
HE'S AN ALIEN
FROM ONE OF OUR GAMES
THAT'S IN PRODUCTION RIGHT NOW
IN ONE OF OUR TEST ENVIRONMENTS.
As she continues to move and watch the alien on the screen do the same, Mikaela says THIS IS SO FUN.
HOW DID YOU
TURN MY BODY INTO THAT?
Michelle says SO, SINCE THE COMPUTER
KNOWS YOUR SKELETON,
AND KNOWS JUDGE'S SKELETON,
THEY CAN BASICALLY
MEET IN THE MIDDLE
AND THEN LET
YOUR MARKERS DRIVE JUDGE.
WHAT'S UP, JUDGE?
As she dances, she says I'M JUDGE.
I'M JUDGE.
I'M MIKAELA JUDGE.
Michelle says SO NOW IT'S TIME
FOR THE BEST PART OF MY JOB.
LET'S HAVE SOME FUN.
She and Mikaela dance.
Mikaela says LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
I GIVE YOU THE DANCING ROBOT.
ONCE UPON A TIME,
THERE WAS A LONELY ROBOT.
HE WISHED, AND HE WISHED
HE COULD JUST DANCE.
BUT HE WAS A ROBOT,
SO HE COULDN'T.
BUT, WITH PRACTICE...
AND HE PRACTISED.
As she dances, the robot does the same. They spin and twirl.
Mikaela says HE WENT TO HIS FIRST CONCERT.
EVERYBODY LOVED HIM.
AND HE BECAME
THE FIRST EVER DANCING ROBOT.
She bows.
Edwin says BRAVO.
Mikaela says SCENE.
Now a 3D figure of a girl that looks like Mikaela appears on screen and moves as Mikaela speaks.
She says THIS REAL TIME PERFORMANCE
CAPTURE IS THE COOLEST.
IT MAKES MY BODY
LOOK WAY DIFFERENT.
I JUST WONDER HOW
THEY CAPTURE PEOPLE'S FACES
TO TELL IF THEY'RE HAPPY OR SAD.
Mikaela and Michelle sit next to each other.
As she shows Mikaela an electronic headpiece with several sensors, Michelle says MIKAELA,
IN ORDER TO CAPTURE REALLY
COMPLEX FACIAL EXPRESSIONS
WE USE ONE OF THESE.
IT'S CALLED AN HMC,
OR A HEAD-MOUNTED CAMERA.
WANNA TRY IT ON?
Mikaela says SURE.
She puts on the headpiece, which contains several cameras pointed at her face.
Michelle says THERE YOU GO.
YOU CAN SEE HERE THERE ARE
A FEW CAMERAS INWARD FACING
THAT ARE CAPTURING ALL
OF YOUR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS.
USUALLY WE'LL PUT
MARKERS ON YOUR FACE
JUST LIKE THE ONES
THAT WERE ON YOUR BODY BEFORE.
THESE CAMERAS WILL PICK UP
THE WAY THAT THEY MOVE
AND ALLOW OUR ANIMATORS
TO REPLICATE THEM
AND CREATE REALLY
REALISTIC EXPRESSIONS.
As she mimics facial expressions, Mikaela says SO, IT WILL KNOW IF I'M HAPPY?
OR SAD.
OR CONFUSED.
OR ANGRY.
WITH THE CLICK OF A FEW BUTTONS,
YOU CAN TRANSFORM
INTO ANYTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE.
BE IT A ROBOT.
A LION.
(ROARING)
OR A DINOSAUR.
(CRASHING)
ANYTHING.
MOTION CAPTURE MAKES VIDEOGAMES
AND MOVIES TOTALLY AMAZING.
I THINK
I FIGURED OUT WHAT TO DO.
AND IT'S TO TRY MORE JOBS.
THE HUNT CONTINUES.
JOIN ME NEXT TIME
WHEN I CAPTURE THE MOTION
OF DISCOVERING
WHAT I'LL BE WHEN I GROW UP.
The clip ends.
Back in Teacher Arianna's room, a caption reads "Storyboarding."
Arianna says FROM THAT CLIP,
WE LEARNED THAT STORYBOARDING
IS A GREAT FIRST STEP
IN BRINGING OUR IDEAS TO LIFE.
WHILE MIKAELA USED IT TO
ACTUALLY KIND OF SHOW THE STORY
OF HER MONSTER DANCING AROUND,
WE CAN ACTUALLY USE IT IN ORDER
TO HELP US TO FIGURE OUT
THE STEPS
FOR SOLVING OUR PROBLEM.
SO, WHAT WE'RE GONNA BE DOING
OVER THE NEXT LITTLE BIT
IS DRAWING SOME
OF THOSE STEPS OUT
AND DOING A STORYBOARD
IN A SIMILAR WAY.
BEFORE WE BEGIN,
LET'S TAKE A QUICK BREAK.
I KNOW THAT FOR ME,
GETTING UP AND MOVING
IS ALWAYS A GREAT WAY TO KIND OF
GET MYSELF ENERGIZED AND FOCUSED
WHEN I'VE GOT
A BIG TASK AHEAD OF ME.
SO, TO DO THAT, HERE'S MICKEEY,
AND HE'S GONNA
HELP US TO LEARN A NEW DANCE.
IT'S PROBABLY ONE OF
MY FAVOURITES, OR, AT LEAST,
THE NAME IS MY FAVOURITE.
I PRESENT TO YOU
THE FUNKY CHICKEN.
Mickeey appears inside a warehouse. He's in his twenties, clean-shaven, with short black hair.
He says YO!
WHAT'S UP?
WHAT'S GOIN' ON, MOVERS?
WE'RE GONNA BE LEARNING
ONE OF THE FUNNEST DANCES EVER.
DON'T BE A CHICKEN.
JUST DO THE FUNKY CHICKEN.
HEY!
A caption appears on screen. It reads "Funky chicken."
He closes his fists, holds them close to his body and shakes his elbows as if they were chicken wings.
He says GRAB YOUR WINGS
AND FLY, YOU GUYS.
IT'S TIME TO LEARN
THE FUNKY CHICKEN.
LET'S GO CHECK IN AND SEE
WHAT OUR FEET ARE DOING.
FEET ARE SO EASY.
As he performs the movements he mentions, he says
YOU'RE GONNA TAKE YOUR STEPS
FRONT TOGETHER, FRONT TOGETHER,
THEN STEPS BACK.
FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, TOGETHER.
TO REPEAT.
ONE, TOGETHER.
TWO, TOGETHER.
STEP IT BACK.
FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT.
LET'S GO CHECK IN
WITH THE WINGS.
YOU'RE GONNA FLAP IT
DOWN, DOWN, AND DOWN, DOWN.
TAKE IT BACK.
FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, REPEAT.
TAKE IT DOWN,
AND DOWN, DOWN, DOWN.
AND FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT.
PUT THE FEET
AND THE HANDS TOGETHER
AND YOU'VE GOT YOURSELVES
THE FUNKY CHICKEN.
MUSIC AND FRIENDS!
A young woman and a young man join him in and imitate his movements.
As the three dance, Mickeey says
FIVE, SIX, SEVEN.
STEP TO THE SIDE.
STEP TO THE SIDE.
FLAP YOUR WINGS, GUYS.
HERE WE GO.
HEY, TWO, THREE, FOUR.
FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT.
WOO!
Mickeey's friends leave.
He says GUESS WHAT, GUYS!
YOU JUST MOVED WITH MICKEEY.
SEE YA!
He disappears.
Back in Arianna's room, she says
SO, NOW THAT WE'VE HAD A CHANCE
TO GET FUNKY, I'M READY.
AND I HOPE THAT YOU ARE TOO.
SO, WE'RE GONNA START OFF
BY BREAKING UP OUR PAGE
SIMILAR TO MIKAELA.
AND I'M GONNA ACTUALLY
BE DRAWING DOWN HERE.
AND THEN I'LL SHOW IT TO YOU.
AND I'LL SHOW YOU
KIND OF WHAT I'M WORKING ON.
SO, GRAB YOUR SHEET OF PAPER.
AND GRAB YOUR WRITING TOO L.
I'M JUST GONNA USE
A REGULAR SHARPIE.
SO, WHAT MIKAELA DID
WAS SHE ACTUALLY BROKE UP
HER PAGE INTO QUARTERS.
SO, LET'S DO THAT.
YOUR PAGE SHOULD LOOK
SOMETHING LIKE THIS.
She holds up a page with two lines that divide it into four squares.
She says AGAIN, IT DOESN'T HAVE
TO BE PERFECTLY EQUAL,
BUT WE'RE TRYING
TO JUST BREAK UP OUR PAGE.
NOW THAT WE'VE DONE THAT,
I JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING.
WHEN WE'RE SOLVING A PROBLEM,
SOMETIMES WE'RE ACTUALLY GONNA
CREATE A PHYSICAL SOLUTION.
SO WE MIGHT
BE CREATING SOMETHING
THAT YOU ACTUALLY BUILD.
AND OTHER TIMES YOU MIGHT
BE ACTUALLY CREATING A SERVICE
OR A PROGRAM FOR SOMEONE.
EITHER WAY,
WE'RE GONNA TRY AND SEE
IF WE CAN USE THIS STORYBOARD
TO HELP GUIDE US ALONG THE WAY.
SO, IF YOU'RE MAKING
A PHYSICAL SOLUTION,
HERE ARE SOME INSTRUCTIONS
THAT ARE GONNA HELP YOU
AS YOU'RE DOING YOUR STORYBOARD.
YOU'RE PROBABLY GONNA START OFF
WITH, AT LEAST IN THE FIRST BOX,
THINKING ABOUT
WHERE YOU'RE GONNA BEGIN.
IF I'M MAKING A ROBOT, I'M GONNA
TRY AND BE ABLE TO FIGURE OUT,
MAYBE I'LL WORK ON HIS TORSO.
I MIGHT WANNA ALSO THINK
ABOUT MATERIALS THAT I NEED.
SO, IN YOUR FIRST BOX,
I WANT YOU THINK ABOUT,
"WHAT'S STEP ONE?"
WHAT'S THE FIRST THING
THAT YOU'RE GONNA DO?
MAYBE YOU HAVE TO START THINKING
ABOUT YOUR MATERIALS.
WHAT ARE YOU GONNA NEED?
AND THEN, FROM THERE,
IN BOXES TWO, THREE, AND FOUR,
YOU'RE GONNA START
TO MAYBE CONTINUE THOSE STEPS.
ONCE YOU'VE CREATED THE TORSO,
WHAT DO YOU CREATE NEXT?
WHAT MATERIALS ARE YOU
GONNA NEED FOR THAT PART?
IF YOU'RE CREATING A PROGRAM
OR SERVICE DURING THIS TIME
IT'S PROBABLY GOING TO BE HARD
TO GET YOUR MESSAGE
OUT TO PEOPLE.
SO, YOU MIGHT WANNA BE ABLE
TO CREATE AN APP OR A WEBSITE
SO THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY TELL
MORE PEOPLE ABOUT THIS SERVICE
THAT YOU'RE GONNA OFFER.
SO, FOR YOU, YOU MIGHT ACTUALLY
HAVE TO BE USING YOUR STORYBOARD
IN ORDER TO DRAW OUT,
MAYBE THE SCREENS FOR YOUR APP,
OR MAYBE THE SCREENS
FOR YOUR WEBSITE.
EITHER WAY, YOU'RE GONNA
HAVE TO USE A STORYBOARD
TO KIND OF GET YOURSELF GOING
AND THINKING ABOUT YOUR IDEA.
SO, MAYBE BOX ONE,
IF YOU'RE DOING A SERVICE,
IS YOUR WELCOME PAGE.
WHAT ARE PEOPLE GONNA SEE WHEN
THEY COME TO YOUR WEBSITE?
OR WHAT ARE THEY GONNA SEE
WHEN THEY COME TO YOUR APP?
SO, FOR MY PROBLEM WITH CLOTHING
THAT I WAS WORKING ON BEFORE,
I DECIDED THAT I WANTED
TO BE ABLE TO CREATE AN APP.
SO, I'M GONNA
FOCUS IN ON AN APP.
WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO DURING
THIS TIME IS DRAW AS I DRAW.
I'M GONNA DRAW OUT SOMETHING.
I'M GONNA
SHARE IT BACK WITH YOU.
BUT I WANT YOU
TO JUST USE THIS TIME TO DRAW.
SO IF YOU'RE
WORKING ON A PRODUCT,
MAKE SURE THAT YOU'RE THINKING
ABOUT THE ACTUAL STEPS.
WHERE AM I GOING TO BEGIN?
WHAT MATERIALS DO I NEED?
IF YOU'RE WORKING
ON A SERVICE OR A PROGRAM,
YOU WANNA THINK ABOUT
A WEBSITE OR AN APP.
WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE?
WHAT'S THAT HOME SCREEN GONNA
LOOK LIKE WHEN YOU FIRST BEGIN?
AND THEN, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE
OTHER FEATURES THAT ARE THERE?
SO, LET'S GET STARTED.
FOR ME, I'M ACTUALLY GOING
TO BE ABLE TO CREATE AN APP.
SO, I'M GONNA START OFF
AND I'M GONNA DRAW
A LITTLE SOMETHIN'
SOMETHIN' FOR YOU HERE.
Inside square 1 she draws a smartphone.
She says THERE'S MY APP.
I KNOW IT'S NOT PERFECT.
IT'S ACTUALLY
PROBABLY ON ITS SIDE.
THAT MIGHT WORK BETTER.
AND NOW WHAT I'M GONNA DO IS
I'VE DECIDED THAT IT'S
GONNA BE A CLOTHING EXCHANGE.
SO, FOR ME, I'M GONNA
DRAW A FEW ARROWS IN HERE.
'CAUSE EXCHANGE,
I THINK ABOUT ARROWS.
She adds clothes and arrows into the phone.
She says YOU'RE CHANGING THINGS AROUND.
SO, I'M GONNA DRAW ARROWS.
I AM GOING TO DRAW
SOME CLOTHING ITEMS.
AND I'M GONNA CALL IT
THE CLOTHING XCHANGE.
I THINK I'M GONNA BE NEAT.
INSTEAD OF "EXCHANGE,"
I'M GONNA DO IT
AS "XCHANGE," LIKE THAT.
AND MAYBE I'M GONNA WANT
TO BE ABLE TO DO
SOME ARROWS HERE FOR MY "X."
I DON'T KNOW YET.
I ALSO WANNA THINK OF
MAYBE SOME BRIGHT COLOURS
THAT I'M GONNA ADD.
SO, I'VE GOT MY MARKERS HERE.
I'M GONNA ADD
SOME BRIGHT COLOURS.
MAYBE MY T-SHIRT'S
GOING TO BE PINK.
As she paints her drawing, she says
'CAUSE I THINK BRIGHT COLOURS
ARE GOING TO ATTRACT PEOPLE
AND THEY'RE GONNA BE REALLY,
REALLY EXCITED TO CHECK OUT
MY SITE IF THEY SEE THAT.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE FEATURES
THAT YOU THINK
YOU MIGHT NEED TO ADD?
I AM JUST COLOURING THEM IN.
THIS IS MY WELCOME PAGE.
SO, ON MY APP, YOU'RE
ALSO GOING TO HAVE A LOG IN.
SO, I'M GOING TO DO MINE
A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENTLY.
I'M GONNA PUT IT
RIGHT AT THE TOP.
IT'S A LOGIN BUTTON.
AND...
SO, THERE YOU GO.
THAT'S KIND OF MY WELCOME SCREEN
WHEN PEOPLE ACTUALLY COME.
IT'S NOT BEAUTIFUL,
BUT I'M GIVING IT A TRY.
OKAY, SO FROM THERE, ONE OF
THE FEATURES THAT I'M INCLUDING,
AND I'M GONNA DRAW THAT
IN MY SECOND BOX OVER HERE,
IS THAT PEOPLE CAN ACTUALLY
CONNECT WITH OTHER PEOPLE
TO EXCHANGE THEIR CLOTHING.
As she draws inside square 2, she says
SO, I'M GONNA DRAW TWO PEOPLE.
AGAIN, IT DOESN'T NEED
TO BE ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.
THEY'RE GONNA HAVE SMILES 'CAUSE
THEY'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT
EXCHANGING THEIR CLOTHING.
AND I'M ACTUALLY GOING TO DRAW
A SYMBOL THAT I THINK OF
WHEN I THINK ABOUT MAPS.
AND I'M GOING TO PUT TORONTO.
AND, MAYBE THEY'VE GOT
CLOTHING IN THEIR HANDS.
IT'S A REALLY TINY SHIRT
FOR SOME REASON.
AND A REALLY TINY
PAIR OF SHORTS FOR SOME REASON.
I'M NOT SURE.
BUT THERE YOU GO.
THAT'S MY SECOND SCREEN.
THAT'S WHAT I THINK.
SO IT'S AN OPPORTUNITY
TO HAVE A MAP.
MAYBE I'M GOING TO WRITE
"WHERE DO YOU LIVE?"
AND THEY CAN CLICK ON
MAYBE A COMMUNITY.
AND THEN,
THAT'S ONE WAY THAT THEY
CAN CONNECT WITH EACH OTHER.
SO, THAT'S MY SECOND OPTION.
AND THEN, ON MY APP,
I'M ALSO GOING
TO HAVE A PLACE FOR DIY VIDEOS.
THOSE DO-IT-YOURSELF VIDEOS
THAT ARE REALLY, REALLY COOL.
As she draws inside square 3, she says
SO, I'M GONNA PUT IN
A COUPLE OF VIDEO BOXES HERE.
AND, I ALWAYS THINK
OF VIDEO BOXES FOR SOME REASON
AS HAVING LIKE,
RED SYMBOLS TO CLICK PLAY.
SO, I'M GONNA DRAW THEM.
YOU KEEP DRAWING.
YOU'RE THINKING
ABOUT YOUR PROBLEM.
YOU KEEP DRAWING
'CAUSE I'M JUST GONNA DRAW AWAY.
SO, VIDEOS,
THIS IS GONNA BE A T-SHIRT.
THIS ONE'S GONNA BE SHORTS.
JEANS.
THIS ONE'S GONNA BE
ANOTHER T-SHIRT.
THIS ONE'S GONNA BE A SKIRT.
PANTS.
PERFECT.
TAKE A LOOK.
SO, I'VE GOT SOME VIDEOS.
She holds up the drawing of a phone running an app that shows six videos.
She says AND THESE ARE GONNA BE VIDEOS
OF PEOPLE ACTUALLY SHARING
HOW YOU'RE ABLE
TO REPURPOSE YOUR CLOTHING,
WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH THEM,
HOW DO YOU
MAKE THEM EXCITING AGAIN,
IF THAT'S WHAT YOU WANNA DO.
SO, PERFECT.
I GOT THAT ONE.
AND THEN THE LAST FEATURE
THAT I WANT TO DO,
IS I WANT PEOPLE
TO KIND OF FEEL REALLY PROUD
WHEN THEY REPURPOSE THEIR ITEMS.
I WANT THEM TO FEEL LIKE,
"OOH, COOL."
SO I'M GONNA DO A PROFILE PAGE.
As she draws inside square 4 she says
THEY'RE GONNA HAVE THEIR NAME,
MAYBE THEIR AGE.
AND THEN THEY'RE GONNA HAVE
SOMETHING CALLED MY CREATIONS.
AND THEY CAN
ADD IN SOME PICTURES.
SO, THERE YOU GO.
THAT'S MY SECOND PART.
ON THIS PART OF THE APP,
IT'S GONNA BE A PROFILE.
I'VE GOT MY NAME, ARIANNA.
AGE, I JUST WROTE BIG NUMBER,
'CAUSE YOU DON'T NEED
TO KNOW THAT NUMBER YET.
AND THEN, ALL OF A SUDDEN
AT THE BOTTOM HERE,
I'VE GOT MY CREATIONS.
SO, I MADE A T-SHIRT
AND I'M PUTTING THAT OUT THERE.
SO, THESE ARE JUST DIFFERENT
IDEAS THAT I HAVE FOR MY APP.
I KIND OF STORYBOARDED IT.
AND I FEEL REALLY GREAT
ABOUT GETTING IT DOWN
ON A PIECE OF PAPER BECAUSE
IT HELPED ME TO KIND OF THINK
THROUGH ALL OF MY IDEAS,
BEFORE I CREATED MY APP.
IMAGINE IF I CREATED MY APP
AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN,
I WAS KIND OF LOST AND THERE
WERE THINGS I NEEDED TO ADD
AND IT WAS REALLY, REALLY HARD
TO KIND OF WORK BACKWARDS?
NOW, AT LEAST,
I CAN CHECK IT OUT
AND SEE IF IT'S SOMETHING
THAT MY USERS WANT.
AND NOW, I ACTUALLY THINK THAT
I'VE GOT A COUPLE OF USERS
THAT I CAN TEST IT OUT WITH.
SO, WHILE I GO AND CHECK IN
WITH ONE OF MY USERS,
I WANT YOU TO GET UP
AND GET MOVING.
YOU'VE BEEN WORKING REALLY HARD
COMING UP WITH YOUR IDEAS SO FAR
FOR YOUR STORYBOARD.
SO, HERE'S GREG.
CHECK OUT HIS DANCE.
AND, WHILE YOU'RE WATCHING,
THINK ABOUT IF THERE'S
A DANCE YOU CAN CREATE,
BASED ON MAYBE
SOME OF THE MOVEMENTS
THAT YOU USE EVERY SINGLE DAY.
LET'S WATCH.
In a clip, Greg stands inside a bedroom and points at his wrist.
He sings
IT'S TIME TO DO
THE PHYSICAL DISTANCING DANCE
THE WHAT?
IT'S TIME TO DO
THE PHYSICAL DISTANCING DANCE
OKAY...
In a music clip he dances and washes his hands as a song says
First turn on the tap so you can wash your hands. That's how you start the physical distancing dance. A 20-second wash, you'll leave the germs no chance except to fear when you do the physical distancing dance. Step back!
HOW FAR?
2 metres is the answer to your question, I should mention. It's so COVID cannot transfer. Remember!
WHAT?
That when you cough or sneeze don't do it in your hands. Do it in your sleeve!
TURN ON THE TAP,
TURN ON THE TAP
WASH YOUR HANDS,
WASH YOUR HANDS
STEP BACK,
STEP BACK
AND WHEN YOU COUGH OR SNEEZE,
DO IT IN YOUR SLEEVES
TURN ON THE TAP,
TURN ON THE TAP
WASH YOUR HANDS,
WASH YOUR HANDS
STEP BACK,
STEP BACK
AND WHEN YOU COUGH OR SNEEZE,
DO IT IN YOUR SLEEVES. ACHOO!
Remember when you're lonely doesn't mean that you're alone. Everybody's physical distancing at home. So everybody dance. I mean you're watching TV so you've got no reason to not dance with me!
As Laura, Greg and Lucas appear on split screens dancing to the song, it continues
GO, LAURA,
GO, LUCAS
GO, GREG,
GO, KIDS
YEAH, YOU'D BETTER BE
WASHING THOSE HANDS.
YOU'RE WATCHING TVOKIDS.
AH-AH-CHOO!
The clip ends.
Arianna says SO, FANTASTIC.
WHILE I WAS JUST CHECKING IN
WITH SOMEONE ON MY APP,
I WAS ALSO DOING
A LITTLE BIT OF MOVEMENT.
SO HOPEFULLY YOU ARE READY
TO GET GOING TO THIS NEXT PART.
YOU HAD A CHANCE
TO DRAW OUT YOUR STORYBOARD.
AND NOW WE'RE GONNA
START THINKING ABOUT
"HOW DO WE
BRING THIS IDEA TO LIFE?"
AND, I KNOW I KEEP SAYING THAT.
BEFORE YOU DO,
I WANT US TO BE ABLE TO CREATE
SOMETHING CALLED A PROTOTYPE.
A caption appears on screen. It reads "Prototype."
Arianna continues WHAT IT IS IS IT'S SOMETHING
THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY PUT
IN THE HANDS OF YOUR USERS
SO THAT THEY CAN TEST OUT AND
SEE WHETHER OR NOT THEY LIKE IT.
IT GIVES THEM AN OPPORTUNITY
TO BE ABLE
TO GIVE YOU SOME FEEDBACK.
AND AS THEY TEST IT OUT, YOU'RE
ABLE TO MAKE THOSE ITERATIONS,
THOSE CHANGES THAT
ARE GONNA MAKE YOUR PROTOTYPE,
OR YOUR SOLUTION, EVEN BETTER.
SO EVERYTHING
THAT GETS MADE EN MASSE,
SO EVERYTHING THAT KIND OF
COMES OUT OF A FACTORY,
REALLY REQUIRES PEOPLE
TO GO OUT AND TEST IT FIRST.
YOU DON'T WANT TO MAKE
A WHOLE BUNCH OF SOMETHING
AND THEN REALIZE
THAT PEOPLE DON'T WANT IT,
PEOPLE AREN'T INTERESTED IN IT,
AND THAT THEY
DON'T REALLY LIKE IT AT ALL.
SO, WHAT GOOD WOULD THAT BE?
I'M GONNA GIVE YOU
AN EXAMPLE OF SOMETHING.
LET'S THINK UP OF...
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE
ICE CREAM FLAVOUR?
IS IT CHOCOLATE?
VANILLA?
ROCKY ROAD?
WHATEVER IT IS, SOMEONE
ACTUALLY TOOK THE TIME
TO BE ABLE
TO DESIGN THAT FLAVOUR.
WHAT WE'RE GONNA DO NOW,
IS WE'RE GONNA CHECK OUT
THE JOB OF AN ICE CREAM MAKER.
HERE'S MIKAELA AGAIN, AND SHE'S
GONNA TAKE YOU ON A CLOSE LOOK
AT WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE
AN ICE CREAM MAKER FOR A DAY.
LET'S WATCH.
Mikaela appears eating vegetables from a plate.
She says HEY, WORLD.
WELCOME BACK TO MY VLOG.
I'M JUST FINISHING UP
SOME DELICIOUS VEGGIES.
I'VE GOTTA SAY.
CARROTS ARE MY FAVOURITE.
I LIKE TO...
(MUMBLING)
MM-MM-MM-MM-MM!
Now as she eats ice cream she says OH, HI.
MUST'VE LOST
THE FEED FOR A SECOND.
AS YOU CAN SEE,
I'M ON DESSERT: ICE CREAM.
I LOVE VEGETABLES,
BUT WHO DOESN'T LOVE
THIS WONDERFUL STUFF?
CAN YOU BELIEVE
IT'S SOMEBODY'S JOB
TO USE SCIENCE TO CREATE
NEW FLAVOURS OF ICE CREAM?
IT DOESN'T GET
SWEETER THAN THAT.
I'M GONNA FIND OUT WHAT IT TAKES
SO I CAN MAKE WONDERFULLY
SCRUMPTIOUS NEW FLAVOURS
OF ICE CREAM.
WHEN I GROW UP!
MMM.
Now standing outside an industrial facility, she says HERE I AM
AT A GIANT ICE CREAM FACTORY
READY TO BECOME
AN ICE CREAM MAKER.
AND ONE THING'S FOR SURE.
I'M NOT WAITING 'TIL I GROW UP.
I'M GETTING ICE CREAM TODAY.
THIS PLACE IS MASSIVE.
OVER 600 PEOPLE WORK HERE.
TO BE HONEST,
IT COULD USE A LITTLE MUSIC.
(MONKS CHANTING)
DEFINITELY NOT.
(ICE CREAM TRUCK MUSIC PLAYING)
PERFECT.
She turns around and says OH, HI, KEITH.
A man approaches and says HI, MIKAELA.
He's in his fifties, with short gray hair, a beard and glasses.
A caption appears on screen. It reads "Keith. Ice cream maker."
Mikaela says KEITH IS THE DIRECTOR OF
TECHNICAL SERVICES HERE.
KEITH, WHAT DOES
THAT TITLE MEAN?
Keith says THAT MEANS
I'M IN CHARGE OF QUALITY
AND NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT.
SO EVERY DAY
I GET TO MAKE TASTY NEW TREATS.
Mikaela says TASTY TREATS YOU SAY?
Keith says EVERY DAY.
Mikaela says THEN WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR?
(ECHOING)
Later, standing near a double door, Keith says MIKAELA,
BEFORE WE GO INTO THE PLANT
WE HAVE TO PUT ON SAFETY GEAR
TO MAKE SURE WE'RE PROTECTED
AND TO MAKE SURE
THE FOOD'S SAFE.
Mikaela says LET'S DO IT.
Keith says OKAY.
In fast motion they put on lab coats, face masks, hair nets, hardhats and boots, then walk into another room.
As she places her hands inside a machine that lights a green light, Mikaela says
SAFETY FIRST.
Then she does the same with a machine that cleans her boots and says SAFETY FIRST.
As they step into a factory she says WHOA!
Keith says THIS IS THE FACTORY.
Fast clips show machines pouring ice cream into plastic containers and sealing the lids.
Mikaela says YUMMY!
Keith says SO, DO YOU WANNA
COME UP HERE AND CHECK THIS OUT?
Mikaela says YEAH.
Keith says JUST CLIMB ON UP.
Mikaela says WHAT?
A large machine with a robotic arm places wooden sticks into dozens of lollies at once.
Keith says SO, THIS IS WHERE
THE LOLLIES GET FROZEN UP.
He hands one to Mikaela and says NOW, THAT'S A FUN TREAT!
She eats.
Later she inspects a machine that packages the lollies and says
COOL.
I NEED A MOMENT.
IT'S BEAUTIFUL.
IT'S JUST SO BEAUTIFUL.
She pretends to dry tears.
(SOBBING)
Back in her lab she serves a ice cream cone as she says
CAREFUL, CAREFUL.
I'M IN THE MIDDLE
OF SETTING MY PERSONAL RECORD
FOR ICE CREAM CONE STACKING.
ONE WRONG BREATH
AND THIS WHOLE CREAMY OPERATION
COULD COME TUMBLING DOWN.
THAT KEITH IS ONE COOL CUSTOMER.
IT MADE ME WONDER HOW HE GOT
TO BE AN ICE CREAM MAKER
IN THE FIRST PLACE.
SO CHECK THIS OUT!
I MEAN, CHECK THIS OUT.
An animated slate reads "When they were growing up! By Mikaela."
As a storyboard shows a child eating ice cream, Mikaela narrates
EVER SINCE HE CAN REMEMBER,
KEITH HAS HAD A SWEET TOOTH.
WHEN HE WAS VERY YOUNG,
HE TRIED TO EAT SUGAR
RIGHT OUT OF THE BOWL.
KEITH'S PARENTS LIKED
TO TAKE HIM AND HIS BROTHER
TO THE ICE CREAM SHOP.
HIS FAVOURITE FLAVOUR
WAS MINT CHIP.
A teenager looks at a test tube inside a lab.
Mikaela narrates IN SCHOOL, KEITH STUDIED SCIENCE
AND BECAME A FOOD TECHNICIAN.
FIRST HE WORKED WITH CHOCOLATE
AND THEN ICE CREAM.
A bearded, older Keith pours chocolate chips into a machine.
Mikaela narrates NOW, KEITH GETS TO
TASTE TREATS EVERY DAY.
A KID'S DREAM.
As she holds up a cone with several scoops, Mikaela says I DID IT!
EIGHT SCOOPS!
A
WHEN I GROW UP
RECORD!
ALL RIGHT, BACK TO THE...
(YELLING)
(SPLATTERING)
As she and Keith step into a lab he says
SO THIS IS OUR RESEARCH
AND DEVELOPMENT LAB.
THIS IS WHERE WE START MAKING
ALL THE COOL, NEW TREATS.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO MAKE
A NEW FLAVOUR OF ICE CREAM?
Mikaela says YES.
Keith says FIRST THING
WE HAVE TO DO IS MAKE THE MIX.
Mikaela says WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY MIX?
Keith says WELL, MIX IS THE BASE
FOR ALL THE ICE CREAMS.
WE CAN EITHER MAKE A WHITE MIX,
WHICH WE CAN USE
FOR VANILLA, OR OTHER FLAVOURS,
OR, WE CAN MAKE A BROWN MIX
WHICH GOES INTO CHOCOLATE.
Mikaela says HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO CHOOSE?
I MEAN, CHOCOLATE.
VANILLA.
CHOCOLATE?
VANILLA?
CHOCOLATE, VANILLA, VANILLA.
(SPEAKING LIKE A CHIPMUNK)
(GASPING)
I'VE MADE MY DECISION.
MY ICE CREAM FLAVOUR
WILL BE VANILLA.
Keith says SO, THE FIRST THING WE HAVE TO
DO IS WE HAVE TO ADD SUCROSE,
WHICH IS LIQUID SUGAR,
INTO THE BLENDER.
SO, IF YOU JUST WANT TO POUR
THAT IN UNTIL I SAY STOP.
YOU'RE NOT GONNA USE ALL OF IT.
As she pours a thick transparent liquid into a blender, he says
THE LIQUID SUGAR,
THAT PROVIDES MOST OF
THE SWEETNESS FOR THE ICE CREAM.
AND, STOP.
THE NEXT THING WE ADD
IS LIQUID GLUCOSE.
SO, ADDING THE GLUCOSE IN
ADDS A BIT MORE SWEETNESS
AND IT ADDS SOME
TEXTURE TO THE ICE CREAM.
She pours a sticky yellow liquid.
He says PUT THE BLENDER ON THE BASE.
WE'RE GONNA TURN THE BLENDER ON
AND WE'RE GONNA BE ADDING
THE STABILIZER TO THE SUGAR.
THESE ARE THE COMPONENTS
THAT GIVE THE ICE CREAM
A LOT OF ITS BODY
AND THEY HELP TO KEEP
THE AIR IN THE ICE CREAM.
WE'LL TURN THE BLENDER ON.
As the blender runs, Mikaela adds a small amount of powder.
Keith says NOW, WE CAN ADD
THE OTHER COMPONENTS.
SO, WE START WITH THE HEART OF
ICE CREAM, WHICH IS THE CREAM.
SO, WE JUST
WANNA POUR THE CREAM.
WE'RE NOT GONNA USE IT ALL.
BUT JUST POUR IT IN
UNTIL I TELL YOU TO STOP.
Mikaela says THE HEART OF THE ICE CREAM.
Keith says THE NEXT COMPONENT
IS LIQUID WHEY.
THIS ADDS MORE PROTEIN
TO THE ICE CREAM
AND HELPS IT
BUILD STRUCTURE.
Mikaela says IT CAN'T WHEY-T
TO EAT THIS ICE CREAM.
(LAUGHING)
Keith says JUST ADD IN A LITTLE BIT OF
WATER JUST TO DILUTE THE CREAM
'CAUSE THERE'S
TOO MUCH FAT IN THE CREAM.
THAT SHOULD BE ABOUT ENOUGH.
THE NEXT THING WE HAVE TO DO
IS WE NEED TO COOK IT.
Mikaela says YOU COOK ICE CREAM?
Keith says ABSOLUTELY.
WE TAKE THE MIX WHICH HAS
RAW INGREDIENTS AND RAW CREAM
AND WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE WE KILL
ALL THE BACTERIA THAT'S IN THERE
AND MAKE SURE
IT'S CLEAN AND GOOD FOR USE.
ONCE WE COOK IT, WE COOL IT DOWN
AND THEN WE CAN
LOOK AT ADDING FLAVOURS.
IT'S COOKED.
IT'S COOLED.
AND IT'S READY TO BE FLAVOURED.
WHAT KIND OF FLAVOUR
WOULD YOU LIKE TO ADD TO THIS?
Mikaela says BROCCOLI!
I MEAN, NO.
MARSHMALLOWS.
Keith says MARSHMALLOW, IT IS.
He holds up a test tube and says THIS IS MARSHMALLOW FLAVOURING.
SMELL.
Mikaela says MARSHMALLOWS, ALL RIGHT.
Keith says SO, WHAT WE DO,
IS WHEN WE MEASURE OUT FLAVOUR
WE WANNA PUT IN THE ICE CREAM.
WOULD YOU LIKE
TO PUT THE FLAVOUR IN?
Mikaela says YEAH!
As he holds up a long measuring instrument he says ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS JUST HOLD
THAT AND SQUEEZE THAT BUTTON.
JUST SQUEEZE IT AT THE TOP.
NOW, THE FUN PART.
WE GET TO TASTE IT.
YOU JUST WANNA MIX IT IN THERE?
YOU'RE ON YOUR WAY
TO BECOMING AN ICE CREAM MAKER.
He pours the mixed ice cream into small cups and says CHEERS.
She tries it and says THAT'S GOOD MARSHMALLOW.
THE MIX IS FINISHED
AND IT TASTES DELICIOUS.
BUT, THE BEST PART TO ICE CREAM
IS THE BITS YOU ADD TO IT.
She walks up to several containers of candy holding an envelope.
(BREATHING DEEPLY)
She says YOU'VE ALL PUT IN AMAZINGLY
SWEET PERFORMANCES.
RASPBERRY RIPPLE, WHO COULD
FORGET YOUR POWERFUL WORK?
AND CHERRIES, YOU'VE MELTED
OUR HEARTS MORE THAN ONCE.
BUBBLE-GUM, CHOCOLATE BITS,
I MEAN, YOU'RE ALL WORTHY.
BUT, THERE CAN ONLY BE TWO
ADDITIONS TO MY SPECIAL TREAT.
AND, THE WINNER IS:
CARAMEL RIPPLE
AND CHOCOLATE COOKIE!
OH!
I LIKE YOU!
I REALLY LIKE YOU!
She and Keith walk up to a large machine.
He says THIS IS MY ICE CREAM MACHINE.
I USE THIS MACHINE TO TURN MIX
INTO ICE CREAM EVERY DAY.
SO, LET ME TURN THE MACHINE ON.
Mikaela says ALL MY HARD WORK
IS GONNA PAY OFF.
OOH!
Keith says PERFECT.
Mikaela says SO WHAT'S GOING ON
INSIDE THIS MACHINE?
Keith says THE LIQUID MIX GOES IN
THE BACK OF THE MACHINE
WHERE IT'S PUT INTO
A BARREL THAT HAS BLADES
WHICH MOVE AROUND.
AND THEY WHIP UP
THE ICE CREAM,
AND THEY SCRAPE THE FROZEN
PARTICLES OF ICE CREAM
OFF THE SIDE OF THE BARREL.
IT'S TURNING THE LIQUID MIX
INTO FROZEN ICE CREAM.
BUT IN THIS MACHINE,
IT GOES FURTHER ON
TO WHERE WE ADD THE INCLUSIONS.
HAVE YOU PICKED OUT
THE INCLUSIONS
THAT YOU WANNA ADD?
Mikaela says CARAMEL RIPPLE
AND CHOCOLATE COOKIE OF COURSE!
Keith says OKAY, WELL,
HERE'S SOME CARAMEL RIPPLE.
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO
IS POUR IT INTO THE FUNNEL
AND IT'LL GO THROUGH
THE RIPPLE PUMP.
Mikaela says OKAY.
As she pours the caramel into a large metal funnel, she says SWEET, SWEET CARAMEL.
Keith says SO NOW WE HAVE
TO ADD THE COOKIES.
Mikaela says GOOD LUCK, MY FRIENDS.
AND, ONE FOR MIKAELA.
Keith says NOW, WE JUST HAVE TO WAIT
FOR THE ICE CREAM
TO START COMING OUT.
Mikaela says COME ON, ICE CREAM!
COME ON!
HERE IT COMES!
THAT DOESN'T LOOK
LIKE ICE CREAM.
Keith says OH, WE JUST HAVE TO WAIT
A FEW MORE MINUTES.
Mikaela says NOW, IT'S ICE CREAM.
ALL RIGHT, ENOUGH WAITING.
I HAVE TO TASTE MY CREATION NOW.
Keith says OKAY, LET'S GET
A CONTAINER TO FILL IT IN.
Mikaela says OH, YEAH!
Keith says THIS IS THE BEST PART OF MY JOB.
TASTE IT.
As she tastes the new ice cream, Mikaela says MMMM!
Keith says OH, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO CALL IT?
Mikaela says HM, I'VE BEEN
THINKING ABOUT THIS ALL DAY.
I'M GONNA CALL IT
OOEY GOOEY MARSHMALLOW.
She points and says HEY, WHAT IS THAT?
As Keith turns around she escapes with the tub of ice cream.
Back in her studio, she says ICE CREAM IS THE BEST,
BUT I THINK I'VE GONE TOO FAR.
I GUESS THERE IS TOO MUCH
OF A GOOD THING.
BUT AS A FOOD TECHNICIAN
AT AN ICE CREAM PLANT,
I COULD JUST INVENT
A NEW FLAVOUR, AND ANOTHER,
AND ANOTHER.
WORKING AT AN ICE CREAM LAB
SOUNDS LIKE THE JOB FOR ME.
UNLESS I PICK
A NEW JOB NEXT TIME.
BUT IF I DO BECOME
AN ICE CREAM MAKER,
I WILL MAKE SURE TO PACE MYSELF.
WHEN I GROW UP.
The end credits roll.
Back to Arianna's room, she says
DO YOU SEE HOW MIKAELA WAS
TESTING THE PRODUCT AS SHE WENT?
SHE WANTED TO MAKE SURE
THAT IN THE END
SHE ENDED UP WITH THE BEST
TASTING ICE CREAM POSSIBLE.
IT'S IMPORTANT.
YOU'VE GOTTA TEST IT OUT
AND SEE IF PEOPLE LIKE IT.
IMAGINE IT WAS LIKE BROCCOLI
ICE CREAM LIKE SHE SAID,
OR MAYBE EVEN
BRUSSELS SPROUT ICE CREAM.
YUCK!
LITTLE TESTS ALONG THE WAY
HELP US TO MAKE SURE
THAT WHAT WE'RE CREATING IS
ACTUALLY VALUABLE AND NEEDED.
SO, NOW THAT YOU'VE GOT
YOUR STORYBOARD FINISHED,
IT'S TIME TO PROTOTYPE.
YOU CAN FIND MATERIALS AROUND
THE HOUSE AND START BUILDING.
OR YOU CAN CHECK IN
WITH AN ADULT
TO SEE IF THEY CAN HELP YOU
AS YOU'RE GONNA START
TO USE MAYBE AN ONLINE TOOL
TO START CREATING
YOUR APP OR YOUR WEBSITE.
FOR ME, I'M GOING TO KEEP
DRAWING AWAY SOME OF MY SCREENS
SO THAT I'M ABLE
TO PUT THEM TOGETHER.
AND THEN
I MIGHT USE AN ONLINE TOOL
TO HELP ME TO GET A PROTOTYPE
TO TEST WITH MY USERS.
REMEMBER THAT FEEDBACK
IS IMPORTANT.
IT'S ALWAYS GOOD
TO GET SOME ADVICE IN ORDER
TO MAKE YOUR IDEAS EVEN BETTER.
I WANT YOU TO CHECK OUT THIS
EPISODE OF
THE TRENDERS.
THEY GO THROUGH A SIMILAR
PROCESS THAT WE'VE GONE THROUGH
AND THEY HIGHLIGHT THE FACT
THAT FEEDBACK IS SO IMPORTANT.
YOU'VE GOTTA LISTEN
TO YOUR USERS.
LET'S WATCH.
In a colourful set, Adam sits on a stool.
Adam is in his twenties, with short brown hair and a goatee. He wears a gray suit, a brown hat and an orange scarf.
He says I'M ADAM, FASHION ICON
AND POP CULTURE SUPERSTAR.
On another corner of the studio, Amy works on a computer.
She is in her twenties and has shoulder length half black, half white hair with bangs. She wears a red dress, bracelets and high heels.
She says AND I'M AMY, COMPUTER
GENIUS AND SOCIAL MEDIA GURU.
Adam says TOGETHER WE TURN CRAZY IDEAS
INTO THE LATEST, HOTTEST TRENDS.
AS the logo of the show appears, Amy says WE ARE
They both say TRENDERS INC.
Eureka pops up. He?s in his twenties, with short straight brown hair in a centre part and he wears glasses, cargo trousers, a striped white and green polo shirt and a brown cardigan.
He says AND I'M EUREKA.
Adam says TODAY, OUR RESIDENT INVENTOR,
EUREKA IS BACK AGAIN
TO PITCH US
A NEW FASHION ACCESSORY.
OOH, AND I LOVE FASHION TRENDS.
Amy says HE DOES.
Eureka says HELLO, TRENDERS.
TODAY I BRING YOU TOWEL BELT.
ARE YOUR HANDS CLAMMY?
ARE THERE NO PAPER TOWELS
IN THE BATHROOM?
WELL, WITH TOWEL BELT, YOU'LL
ALWAYS HAVE A TOWEL WITH YOU.
(LAUGHING)
Adam says WHOA!
FASHION ACCESSORIES
THAT ARE ALSO PRACTICAL?
(MAKING TRAIN NOISES)
Amy says BUT WHY WOULD I WANNA
LOOK LIKE A FOOTBALL PLAYER?
OKAY, SO YOUR IDEA IS A-MA-ZING.
BUT, IT'S NEVER GONNA TREND.
Adam says NOT IN ITS CURRENT FORM.
Eureka says WHAT CAN WE DO TO FIX IT?
Adam says WELL, WE CAN TAKE IT
TO THE REPAIR LAB.
(music plays)
Adam and Amy go down a tube slide and appear in the lab wearing blue coats.
Amy says HERE WE ARE IN THE REPAIR LAB
WHERE WE USE THE REPAIR METHOD
TO SOLVE OUR TRENDING PROBLEMS.
Adam says LET'S DO THIS.
RECOGNIZE THE PROBLEM.
EXPLORE SOME SOLUTIONS.
Amy says MY RESEARCH SHOWS
PEOPLE LIKE BATHROBES.
Adam says PLAN THE EXECUTION.
Amy says WE'RE GOING TO MAKE THE OUTFIT
OUT OF TOWEL MATERIAL.
Adam says ATTEMPT A PROTOTYPE.
SOUNDS LIKE IT'S TIME
FOR A TRENDERS TRANSFORMATION.
WE TOOK EUREKA'S TOWEL CONCEPT
AND REDESIGNED IT
AS A STYLISH JACKET.
Amy says IT'S TIME TO
IMPROVE WITH FEEDBACK.
IT'S TIME TO...
BOTH say TAKE IT TO THE STREETS.
As Amy interviews two girls on a sidewalk, one says LIKE, IF YOU WERE
TO RUB YOUR DIRTY HANDS ON IT,
IT WOULD GET REALLY MESSY.
As Adam interviews a boy and a girl, the boy says PLEASE, I'D LIKE THIS
TO HAVE A LITTLE MORE COLOUR,
LIKE DIFFERENT COLOURS
FOR BOYS AND GIRLS.
(SNIFFLING)
Back in the lab Amy says I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT
OUR TOWEL JACKET WAS A FLOP!
Adam says BUT WE CAN'T JUST
THROW IN THE TOWEL.
Amy says NO, THAT'S NOT US.
Adam says IT'S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT
IF OUR SOLUTION DOESN'T WORK,
WE CAN LOOP BACK TO PLAN AND
TRY AGAIN WITH A DIFFERENT IDEA.
SO WE SWITCHED TO PANTS.
As Adam interviews a boy, the boy says
I LIKE THE IDEA, IT'S JUST
I FEEL LIKE THERE SHOULD BE
A DIFFERENT WAY TO DO IT.
Adam says THE PANTS WERE A HIT, BUT
NEEDED TO BE MORE FASHIONABLE.
WE'VE MADE OUR IMPROVEMENTS
AND NOW IT'S TIME TO
REVEAL TO EVERYONE
OH-OH-OHHHH
Amy says EUREKA, LET US PRESENT TO YOU
TOWEL PANTS.
CLAMMY HANDS?
Adam says TOWEL PANTS.
Amy says JUST DRY ON YOUR THIGHS.
TOWEL PANTS HAS YOU COVERED.
(GASPING)
Eureka says I LOVE THEM.
I WANT SOME.
Amy says YOU GUYS, TOWEL PANTS
JUST GOT 15,000 NEW LIKES.
(GASPING)
Adam says AND OUR POPULARITY GRAPH SHOWS
TOWEL PANTS ARE OFFICIALLY
The three say TRENDING!
Eureka says WHEE!
(GIGGLING)
A spinning logo reads "Trenders Inc."
Back to Arianna, she says OKAY, THAT EPISODE
WAS A LITTLE BIT SILLY,
BUT IT HELPED ME TO UNDERSTAND
THE IMPORTANCE OF FEEDBACK.
SEE HOW AMY AND ADAM WENT OUT
AND THEY
ACTUALLY SPOKE TO PEOPLE?
THAT'S WHAT YOU'VE GOTTA DO.
YOU'VE GOTTA THINK ABOUT A WAY
THAT YOU CAN CONNECT
WITH YOUR USERS
AND IT CAN EITHER BE
BY PICKING UP THE PHONE
AND GIVING THEM A CALL,
OR SOMETIMES YOU CAN TRY
AND DO AN ONLINE SURVEY.
I KNOW IT'S HARD
DURING THESE TIMES,
BUT LISTENING TO YOUR USERS
IS A GREAT WAY TO BE ABLE
TO GET SOME FEEDBACK
AND KNOW WHETHER OR NOT
YOUR SOLUTION IS GONNA WORK.
THEY MIGHT EVEN HAVE
SOME OTHER IDEAS
THAT MIGHT HELP YOU
ALONG THE WAY.
SO, THAT'S PART THREE
OF OUR PASSION PROJECTS.
NOW, YOU'RE COMING EVEN CLOSER
TO BECOMING DESIGNERS,
WHICH IS FANTASTIC.
TODAY YOU LEARNED
HOW TO CREATE STORYBOARDS
AND YOU ACTUALLY TOOK
THE TIME TO CREATE ONE WITH ME.
REMEMBER THAT
YOUR NEXT STEP IS PROTOTYPING.
SO EITHER TAKE SOME MATERIALS
FROM HOME AND START BUILDING,
OR MAYBE DRAW SOME EXTRA SCREENS
IN ORDER TO BE ABLE
TO FIGURE OUT WHAT YOUR APP
OR WEBSITE
MIGHT ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE.
REMEMBER TO ASK
FOR SOME FEEDBACK.
IF YOU'VE GOT USERS
AROUND YOU, GO OUT AND ASK THEM.
TELL THEM WHAT YOU'RE THINKING,
SO THAT YOU CAN HAVE THE CHANCE
TO BE ABLE TO LISTEN TO THEM
AND SEE WHAT THEIR THOUGHTS ARE.
CREATE A PROTOTYPE.
GET IT IN THE HANDS
OF YOUR USERS.
THAT'S REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT.
SO, LIKE AMY AND ADAM SAID,
WE CAN ALWAYS GO BACK
TO THE PLANNING STAGES
IF WE FIND THAT SOMETHING
ISN'T WORKING OUT.
IT'S OKAY.
WE'LL CREATE A NEW ITERATION.
SO, THANK YOU SO MUCH
FOR SPENDING YET ANOTHER
POWER HOUR OF LEARNING
WITH ME.
I SUPER APPRECIATE IT.
AND I HAD A LOT OF FUN
STORYBOARDING WITH YOU TODAY.
SO, I WANT YOU TO CONTINUE
TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY,
JUST HAVE FUN.
BYE!
A slate reads "Today's junior lesson: Bonus material."
A blond girl with pigtails pops up and says HI, I'M EVE.
IF I COULD BE ANYTHING,
I'D BE A PHOTOGRAPHER.
Fast clips show children playing, wearing costumes, learning and having fun as a song plays that says
IMAGINE, IMAGINE, IMAGINE
IMAGINE POWERFUL
IMAGINE COLOURFUL
IMAGINE MAGICAL
CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT?
Eve appears and says
HI, I'M EVE.
IF I COULD BE ANYTHING,
I'D BE A PHOTOGRAPHER.
A PHOTOGRAPHER TAKES PICTURES.
As clips show her taking pictures with a large pink and purple camera, she says
MY CAMERA WOULD BE
WHITE, PINK, AND PURPLE.
I WOULD WALK AROUND
AND TAKE PICTURES OF THINGS
THAT I FIND INTERESTING.
CLICK.
I'D PLACE MY CAMERA
ON A TRIPOD.
IT'S A STAND TO KEEP
MY CAMERA NICE AND STILL.
THEN CLICK.
Drawings of the pictures she pretends to take pop up.
She says SELFIE!
I'D TAKE PHOTOS
OF BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPES
WITH TREES AND A LAKE.
AND A...
A SEA MONSTER?
SEA MONSTERS ARE PRETTY COOL.
SO I WOULD TAKE
LOTS OF PICTURES
TO SHOW THE WHOLE WORLD.
Drawings show a sea monster and marine life.
Eve says SOMETIMES I WOULD
TAKE UNDERWATER PICTURES
FOR NATURE WEBSITES.
THE WEBSITE
WOULD WANT ME TO TAKE A PHOTO
OF ALL
THE DIFFERENT LIFE UNDERWATER.
SELFIE!
I WOULD ALSO TAKE PHOTOS
FOR THE NEWSPAPER.
MY DAD WOULD JUMP UP
AND DOWN ALL EXCITED
WHENEVER MY PHOTOS
ARE ON THE FRONT PAGE.
(GIGGLING)
SOMETIMES I WOULD
TAKE PICTURES OF ME.
LOOK AT MY SELFIE.
CHEESE.
SELFIE!
SMILE.
AS A PHOTOGRAPHER, I WOULD
TAKE PHOTOS IN MY OWN STUDIO.
(MEOWING)
PEOPLE WOULD HIRE ME
TO TAKE PHOTOS OF THEIR PETS:
DOGS AND CATS.
SOMETIMES THE ANIMALS
WOULD MAKE FUNNY FACES.
SMILE.
I WOULD ALSO BE HIRED
TO TAKE SCHOOL PHOTOS.
I WOULD ADJUST MY LIGHTS TO
MAKE EVERYONE LOOK THEIR BEST.
CHEESE!
NOW, LOOK TO YOUR RIGHT.
(BLOWING RASPBERRIES)
THAT'S FUNNY!
I WOULD SELECT
MY FAVOURITE PHOTOS
AND DISPLAY THEM
IN MY OWN GALLERY.
PEOPLE WOULD COME
FROM ALL OVER TO SEE THEM.
BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER
WOULD BE GREAT.
SELFIE!
As fast clips show Eve taking pictures, and drawings shown before, the song plays and says
CAN YOU IMAGINE BEING
ANYTHING YOU WANT TO BE?
CAN YOU IMAGINE THERE'S
A WORLD FULL OF FANTASY?
AND IF YOU THINK
ABOUT IT LOTS
IT BECOMES SO REAL
DID YOU KNOW?
DID YOU KNOW?
DID YOU KNOW?
THAT YOU CAN DO ANYTHING
YOU WANT TO DO
IMAGINE THIS OR THAT
THINK OF SOMETHING NEW
AND YOU CAN ALWAYS
CHANGE A THING OR TWO
ANYTHING YOU WANT,
IT'S REALLY UP TO YOU
BA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BADA-BADA
BA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BADA-BADA
BA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BADA-BADA
BA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BADA-BADA
BA-BADA-BADA
BA-BADA-BADA
CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT?
I'M EVE AND I'M A PHOTOGRAPHER.
IMAGINE THAT!
End credits roll.
(BLEATING)
AN ANIMATED TITLE AGAINST A SUNNY SKY READS "TVOKIDS POWER HOUR OF LEARNING. TEACHER EDITION."
IN OFF, LAURA SAYS WELCOME TO TVOKIDS
POWER HOUR OF LEARNING.
TODAY'S JUNIOR LESSON: PASSION PROJECTS PART 3.
Teacher Arianna stands in a room with a large painting hanging behind her. She's in her early thirties, with short curly brown hair. She's wearing a white sweater and silver hoop earrings.
A caption appears on screen. It reads "Teacher Arianna. Junior 4-6."
She says WELCOME BACK TO PART THREE
OF PASSION PROJECTS.
AS YOU ALREADY KNOW, MY NAME
IS ARIANNA AND I LOVE TO DESIGN.
OVER THE LAST
COUPLE OF SESSIONS,
WE'VE HAD THE CHANCE TO BE
LEARNING SOME OF THE TOOLS
THAT ENGINEERS AND DESIGNERS USE
AS THEY SOLVE
PROBLEMS FOR PEOPLE.
THE LAST TIME WE WERE TOGETHER,
WE STARTED THE PROCESS
THAT WAS MY FAVOURITE PART
OF THE PROCESS: IDEATION.
The caption changes to "Ideation."
Arianna says IT'S THE PART WHERE WE
START TO BE ABLE TO CREATE
SOME REALLY INNOVATIVE,
OR NEW AND EXCITING IDEAS,
AS WE'RE TRYING
TO SOLVE OUR PROBLEM.
SO, WE DID AN ACTIVITY AND
IT WAS CALLED CRAZY EIGHTS
AND IT WAS OUR CHANCE
TO REALLY QUICKLY JUST JOT DOWN
IDEAS THAT CAME TO MIND.
SOME OF YOU MIGHT HAVE
FOUND IT A LITTLE BIT STRESSFUL
BECAUSE WE HAD
TO MOVE REALLY QUICKLY.
WE HAD 40 SECONDS PER BOX!
SO, WHAT I'M GONNA DO IS I'M
GONNA REMIND YOU OF MY PROBLEM.
IT WAS LANDFILLS
GETTING FILLED UP BY CLOTHING.
AND I WAS ACTUALLY SOLVING
THE PROBLEM FOR TEENAGERS,
PEOPLE WHO WERE MY STUDENTS,
THAT I WAS WORKING WITH.
SO, I'M GONNA SHARE WITH YOU
MY CRAZY EIGHTS AGAIN,
JUST TO KIND OF GIVE
YOU A LITTLE REFRESHER
TO REMIND YOU KIND OF
WHAT I WAS THINKING I COULD USE
IN ORDER TO HELP ME
TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.
She shows a piece of paper divided into 8 parts, each of which contains drawings.
She says SO, BOX NUMBER ONE, I THOUGHT
ABOUT A CLOTHING EXCHANGE.
A PLACE AT SCHOOL
WHERE PEOPLE COULD GO
AND THEY COULD EXCHANGE CLOTHING
AND HAVE THE CHANCE TO DROP
THINGS OFF AND PICK THEM UP.
NUMBER TWO,
I WAS THINKING ABOUT, UM,
SOME SORT OF PUBLIC SERVICE,
OR CAMPAIGN TO GET PEOPLE MORE
AWARE ABOUT WHAT THEY WERE DOING
WITH THEIR CLOTHING ITEMS.
WE COULD HAVE POSTERS AS WELL AS
ANNOUNCEMENTS ON THE PA SYSTEM
SO THAT PEOPLE
COULD UNDERSTAND THEIR IMPACT.
BOX NUMBER THREE,
I THOUGHT ABOUT AN APP.
AND IT WAS AN APP
THAT HELPS TO CONNECT DIYERS
SO THEY COULD SHARE VIDEOS
AND THEY COULD KIND OF HELP YOU
TO THINK ABOUT HOW YOU COULD
DO IT YOURSELF IF YOU WANTED
TO BE ABLE TO CREATE SOMETHING
TOTALLY NEW AND AWESOME
FOR YOUR CLOTHING ITEM.
BOX NUMBER FOUR, I CONTINUED
THINKING ABOUT THAT APP.
AND I THOUGHT,
"HM, WHAT IF WE HAD A PLACE
WHERE PEOPLE
COULD SWAP CLOTHING?"
THEY COULD ACTUALLY
TAKE THEIR ITEM,
PUT UP ONLINE WHAT THEY WANTED,
OR MAYBE WHAT THEY DIDN'T WANT,
AND THEY COULD FIND A LOCAL
SAFE PLACE IN THE COMMUNITY
TO SWAP IT WITH SOMEONE ELSE.
I'M GONNA FOLD MY SHEET AGAIN
AND I'M GONNA SHOW YOU
THE BOTTOM HERE.
THIS WAS MY FIFTH IDEA.
I THOUGHT ABOUT HAVING SOME
COMMUNITY CLOTHING STORE.
IT COULD BE IN A CHURCH,
A SYNAGOGUE, A MOSQUE,
A COMMUNITY CENTRE,
ANYWHERE WHERE YOU COULD
POSSIBLY HAVE A PLACE TO SELL
MAYBE SOME CLOTHING
THAT YOU EITHER REPURPOSED,
OR SOME THINGS THAT YOU ARE
NO LONGER INTERESTED IN.
AND THAT COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION
WOULD BE ABLE TO USE THAT MONEY
FOR ANYTHING ELSE
THAT THEY WERE WORKING ON.
BOX NUMBER SIX,
IT WAS A CONTINUATION
OF BOX NUMBER TWO.
YOU'LL NOTICE
SOMETIMES THAT HAPPENS.
SO, WHAT I WAS THINKING
THAT I WAS GONNA DO
WAS I WAS GONNA
KEEP GOING WITH THIS IDEA
OF GETTING PEOPLE AWARE
ABOUT THEIR IMPACT,
BUT I WAS ACTUALLY
GONNA GIVE THEM POINTS.
MAKE IT KIND OF LIKE A GAME.
THEY COULD, YOU KNOW, GET SOME
POINTS AND REDEEM THOSE POINTS
FOR EVERY TIME THEY DID
SOMETHING REALLY GREAT.
THEIR POINTS COULD GO
TOWARDS AN EXPERIENCE,
LIKE THE MOVIES OR SOMETHING.
BOX SEVEN WAS ONE
THAT I WAS THINKING ABOUT
THAT I THOUGHT WAS REALLY COOL.
YOU COULD START A COMPANY
AND IT COULD BE A PLACE
WHERE PEOPLE COULD
DONATE THEIR OLD CLOTHING.
AND THEN WHAT YOU COULD DO
WAS REPURPOSE THEM
AND THE MONEY WOULD GO TOWARDS
KEEPING YOUR STAFF THERE,
SO THAT THEY COULD
CONTINUE TO REPURPOSE,
OR MAKE AMAZING,
NEW CLOTHING THAT WE COULD SELL.
AND THEN, MY FINAL IDEA HERE
WAS REPURPOSING CLOTHING
WITH TECH.
IT WAS AN IDEA.
I THOUGHT ABOUT HAVING YOUR OWN,
YOU KNOW,
THEME MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND
PLAYING AS YOU WALKED AROUND.
IMAGINE IT
COMING OUT OF YOUR COAT
OR COMING OUT
OFF OF YOUR T-SHIRT.
I THOUGHT IT'D BE PRETTY COOL.
SO, THESE WERE MY IDEAS.
AND THE LAST TIME THAT WE LEFT,
I ASKED YOU
TO LOOK AT YOUR SHEET OF PAPER
THAT WAS SIMILAR TO THIS.
I WANTED YOU
TO THINK ABOUT YOUR IDEA.
WHAT WAS THE ONE THAT YOU REALLY
WANTED TO BE ABLE TO WORK ON?
AND THEN, I WANT YOU TO BE ABLE
TO NOW TELL ME WHAT IT IS.
SO, TAKE A COUPLE OF MINUTES
AND THINK ABOUT IT.
REMEMBER FOR THIS PROCESS WE'RE
ALWAYS NARROWING THINGS DOWN.
WE START OFF REALLY, REALLY BIG
WHERE WE TALKED ABOUT
ALL YOUR PASSIONS
AND THEN WE PICKED ONE.
AND THEN, WE TALKED ABOUT
ALL OF THE PROBLEMS,
AND THEN WE PICKED ONE
THAT WE WERE GONNA WORK ON.
AND THEN FROM THERE
WE GOT A WHOLE BUNCH OF IDEAS.
NOW, AGAIN, WE'RE PICKING ONE.
SO WE'RE ALWAYS NARROWING DOWN
AND FOCUSING ON THINGS.
SO, NOW IT'S
YOUR CHANCE TO PICK.
SO I'M GONNA PICK.
THE BOX THAT I AM GOING TO PICK
IS GOING TO BE BOX NUMBER FOUR.
SO, I'M GONNA DO
A LITTLE CIRCLE HERE.
AGAIN, IT'S NOT
A PRETTY CIRCLE, MY FRIENDS.
I MADE SOME MISTAKES THERE
AS I WAS CIRCLING.
BOX NUMBER FOUR, THE APP.
THAT'S WHAT
I'M GONNA FOCUS IN ON.
NOT A VERY PRETTY CIRCLE.
IT'S ALL RIGHT.
I WANT YOU
TO BE ABLE TO THINK ABOUT
"WHAT'S THE IDEA
THAT YOU'RE GONNA WORK ON?"
SO, HOPEFULLY YOU ALREADY
HAVE IN MIND THE PROBLEM
THAT YOU'RE SOLVING
AND WHO YOU'RE SOLVING IT FOR.
AND IF YOU WEREN'T HERE FOR PART
ONE AND PART TWO, DON'T WORRY.
YOU CAN ALWAYS GO BACK ONLINE,
CHECK THEM OUT, AND SEE,
SO THAT YOU CAN
GET YOURSELF CAUGHT UP TO SPEED.
BUT, WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO TODAY
IS I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT
A COOL IDEA THAT
YOU THOUGHT ABOUT TRYING BEFORE.
MAYBE IT'S SOMETHING LIKE...
OH, IF I WERE TO SHOW YOU THIS.
I'VE GOT ALL THESE MARKERS
AND I PUT THEM IN THIS BIN.
IT'S ALL RIGHT.
IT'S NOT GREAT.
BUT I WONDER IF YOU COULD
CREATE A BETTER SOLUTION FOR ME
SO I CAN ACTUALLY
HOLD MY MARKERS IN THERE,
PICK UP THE ONE THAT I WANT.
ANYTHING THAT YOU REALLY
WANT TO BE ABLE TO DESIGN
THAT SOLVES A PROBLEM
FOR SOMEONE IS FAIR GAME.
SO, THINK UP...
THINK UP OF A PROBLEM...
SORRY.
SEE?
WE'RE GONNA MAKE MISTAKES.
THINK UP A PROBLEM.
AND THEN TRY AND SEE
IF YOU CAN SOLVE IT WITH US.
WE'RE GONNA TRY AND USE SOME
OF THE TOOLS, SOME NEW ONES,
IN ORDER TO KIND OF MOVE
OUR IDEAS A LITTLE BIT FURTHER.
SO, FOR TODAY'S LESSON,
WE ARE GONNA NEED A FEW THINGS.
YOU'RE GONNA NEED
A SHEET OF PAPER.
As she shows a blank piece of paper she says I'VE GOT THIS ONE HERE.
AND YOU'RE ALSO
GONNA NEED A WRITING TOOL.
IT CAN BE ANYTHING,
A PEN, A PAPER.
SORRY.
A PEN, A PENCIL, A MARKER.
ANYTHING AT ALL
THAT YOU CAN WRITE WITH.
SO, YOU DON'T
HAVE THEM HANDY, IT'S OKAY.
YOU CAN FEEL FREE TO GO GRAB
THEM AND COME RIGHT BACK.
BUT IF YOU ALREADY DO,
THAT'S GREAT.
WHAT WE'RE GOING TO
START OFF WITH TODAY IS
I WANT YOU
TO CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO.
I'M STARTING TO THINK
THAT
WHEN I GROW UP
IS BECOMING ONE
OF MY FAVOURITE SHOWS.
IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'RE GONNA
LEARN ABOUT AN IMPORTANT TOOL
THAT WE DO, OR WE USE, IN ORDER
TO BRING OUR IDEAS TO LIFE.
IT'S NOT JUST FOUND IN
VIDEOGAMES OR IN MOVIES,
BUT STORYBOARDING
IS AN INCREDIBLE TOOL
THAT DESIGNERS ALSO USE.
SO, I WANT YOU
TO BE THINKING OF YOUR IDEA.
WHAT'S THAT ONE THING THAT YOU
THINK IS GONNA BE THE BEST IDEA
TO SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM?
AND THEN I WANT YOU TO WATCH
MIKAELA AND MICHELLE IN ACTION.
LET'S GO.
Mikaela pops up against a colourful animated background. She?s around 12, with mid-length curly brown hair, and wears a blue sweater.
[WHOOSH]
She says MY NAME'S MIKAELA, AND SINCE
I CAN REMEMBER,
I'VE DREAMT ABOUT WHAT I'LL BE
WHEN I GROW UP!
THERE ARE SO MANY COOL JOBS,
SO I DECIDED TO TRY THEM ALL.
In animation, gear from different jobs appears on her: an astronaut?s helmet, a construction worker's vest and helmet, a chef's hat and apron, and a police officer's hat and badge.
She says I BUILT AN AWESOME STUDIO IN
MY GARAGE,
SO I CAN MAKE AND SHARE VIDEOS
ABOUT MY JOURNEY.
She pops up in her garage. The place has a multi-coloured tile floor, hangers with different uniforms, a bike, a desk, and a colourful back wall with a graffiti that reads "When I grow up!"
She says IT'S ALL ABOUT DISCOVERING
WHAT I'LL BE
WHEN I GROW UP!
The name of the show appears in purple surrounded by colourful silhouettes of different animals and shapes. It reads "When I grow up."
A film countdown clocks appears.
As she plays videogames, Mikaela says COME ON.
COME ON, COME ON, COME ON!
(GRUNTING)
I JUST CAN'T BEAT THIS LEVEL.
THIS GAME IS HARD,
BUT VIDEO GAMES ARE SO AWESOME.
EVEN WHEN YOU LOSE.
THE CHARACTERS AND SCENES
ARE SO LIFE-LIKE
THEY'RE LIKE LITTLE MOVIES
THAT YOU CONTROL.
IN FACT, DID YOU KNOW
SOME GAMES USE REAL ACTORS
TO PLAY THE CHARACTERS
IN THE GAME?
IT'S CALLED MOTION CAPTURE.
THE ACTOR'S MOTIONS ARE
CAPTURED WITH SPECIAL CAMERAS.
AND IT'S SOMEONE'S JOB
TO PUT IT ALL TOGETHER.
COME TO THINK OF IT
THAT WOULD BE AN AMAZING JOB!
WORKING WITH ARTISTS,
AND DESIGNERS, AND ACTORS
TO MAKE THE MOST
AMAZING VIDEO GAME SCENES
THAT WOULD BLOW YOUR MIND.
WELL, THAT SETTLES IT.
I'M GONNA HELP MAKE
MOTION CAPTURE HAPPEN,
SO I CAN HELP MAKE
VIDEO GAMES WHEN I GROW UP.
She continues playing videogames. Then, she appears walking down a sidewalk on a sunny day.
She says I FOUND A VIDEO GAME COMPANY
THAT HAS A MASSIVE STUDIO.
I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE
HOW BIG IT IS.
As she walks into a large office with a sign that reads "Ubisoft" she says IMPRESSIVE, NICELY DECORATED,
NOT AS A BIG AS I THOUGHT
A PERFORMANCE CAPTURE ROOM
WOULD BE, BUT...
A young woman walks up to her and says HI, MIKAELA.
Mikaela says HI, MICHELLE.
Michelle has chin-length curly black hair.
Michelle says WELCOME TO UBISOFT TORONTO.
Mikaela says THANKS.
The caption changes to "Michelle. Shoot Manager."
Mikaela says MICHELLE IS
THE SHOOT MANAGER HERE.
SHE WORKS WITH TONS OF CREATIVE
PEOPLE TO HELP TURN AN IDEA
INTO A VIDEOGAME.
Michelle says READY TO HAVE SOME FUN?
Mikaela says OF COURSE.
Michelle says THE STUDIO'S THIS WAY.
Mikaela says OH!
As they walk into a huge office space with wooden floors and several large desks with computers on them, Michelle says OVER 650 PEOPLE
WORK HERE RIGHT NOW.
Mikaela says WHOA!
THAT'S A LOT.
AND THEY ALL WORK ON VIDEOGAMES?
Michelle says YEP, YEP.
SOME OF THEM I CAN TALK ABOUT,
BUT OTHERS ARE TOP SECRET.
Mikaela says OOH!
They walk into a large room with a high ceiling, dozens of powerful white lights and dozens of cameras all around.
Michelle says MIKAELA, WELCOME TO OUR
PERFORMANCE CAPTURE STUDIO.
Mikaela says WHOA!
SO MANY CAMERAS.
Michelle says YEAH, YEAH, PART OF MAKING
VIDEOGAMES IS BRINGING ACTORS,
STUNT PEOPLE,
AND SOMETIMES EVEN ANIMALS
INTO THIS STUDIO
AND TRACKING THEIR MOTION.
AS YOU CAN SEE, WE'RE
SURROUNDED BY 80 T-160 CAMERAS.
SO THAT MEANS
IT CAN SEE YOUR MOVEMENT
FROM EVERY SINGLE ANGLE.
Suddenly wearing sunglasses and a red feather boa, Mikaela says EIGHTY CAMERAS?
I'M READY FOR MY CLOSE UP.
Now she plays an arcade game.
(VIDEO GAME CHARACTER DYING)
She says CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT ROOM?
USING JUST YOUR IMAGINATION
YOU CAN TURN IT INTO ANYTHING.
AND, THE ACTORS
CAN BECOME ANYONE OR ANYTHING.
BUT, IN ORDER TO ACT,
YOU NEED TO HAVE A STORY.
SO, IT'S TIME
TO FIRE UP THE OLD IMAGINATION.
In animation, Mikaela turns into a cartoon with cogs turning inside her brain.
Now she and AN IMPORTANT FIRST STEP
WHEN YOU'RE TELLING
A STORY IS STORYBOARDING.
Mikaela says WHAT'S A STORYBOARD?
Michelle says A STORYBOARD IS A SERIES
OF PICTURES OR PANELS
WHICH SHOW THE ACTOR WHAT
THEY'RE GOING TO BE DOING
ON THE P-CAP STAGE.
Mikaela says IS THAT WHAT
WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING?
Michelle says YEAH.
WHAT KIND OF STORY
DO YOU WANNA TELL?
Mikaela says I WANNA TELL A STORY
ABOUT A ROBOT
WHO WANTS TO BECOME A DANCER.
Michelle says WELL, GOOD NEWS.
THE ONLY LIMIT
IS YOUR IMAGINATION.
SO, GET DRAWING.
As she draws a robot inside a square, Mikaela says ONE DAY THERE WAS A ROBOT.
As she draws out her ideas in different squares on a whiteboard, she says
HE HAD AN IDEA
THAT HE WANTED TO DANCE.
HE PRACTISED AND PRACTISED.
Michelle says AND WHAT KIND OF DANCER
DOES THE ROBOT WANNA BE?
Mikaela says WELL, HE USUALLY
DOES ALL DANCES,
BUT HE FOCUSES ON, LIKE,
CONTEMPORARY AND BALLET.
Michelle says OOH, NICE.
Mikaela says AND THEN, ONE DAY,
HE BECAME A DANCER.
Mikaela says AND SCENE.
Michelle says BEAUTIFUL.
NOW, THE STORYBOARD'S DONE.
DO YOU WANNA GO
CHECK OUT THE P-CAP STAGE?
Mikaela says YEAH.
Michelle says LET'S DO IT.
Mikaela says OKAY.
Now Mikaela stands in a room next to a whiteboard and says HEY!
I'M INTERRUPTING YOUR REGULARLY
SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING
BECAUSE EVER SINCE
MICHELLE TAUGHT ME
HOW TO DO A STORYBOARD,
I CAN'T STOP.
WATCH THIS.
In fast-motion, she draws out a story in four squares. These show a baby, a girl, a young woman and an elderly woman bent over a walking cane.
She says SEE?
I EVEN PUT TOGETHER A STORYBOARD
THAT TELLS YOU MICHELLE'S STORY.
SO YOU WON'T BE BORED.
CHECK IT OUT.
In animation, a cartoon-style storyboard shows a girl with curly dark hair playing videogames inside her room.
Mikaela says WHEN MICHELLE WAS GROWING UP
SHE LOVED VIDEOGAMES AND MOVIES.
SO IN UNIVERSITY,
SHE STUDIED RADIO BROADCASTING,
THEN WORKED IN TV PRODUCTION.
Drawings show an older Michelle hosting a radio show and using a video camera on a filming set. Then, she holds up a controller and says "I got it!"
Mikaela says THAT JOB PREPARED HER
FOR WORK IN VIDEOGAMES.
MICHELLE'S EXPERIENCE
HELPED HER JUMP RIGHT INTO
A SHOOT MANAGER ROLE.
YOU NEVER KNOW
WHERE YOUR JOB WILL TAKE YOU.
Other drawings show Michelle directing work inside the room with dozens of cameras. An actor wearing a special suit says "I'm an alien!" as Michelle says "I'm a robot!"
Mikaela says MAYBE A STORY ABOUT AN ALARM
CLOCK THAT LIKES TO SLEEP IN,
OR, A TOASTER
THAT'S ALLERGIC TO BREAD,
OR A LIGHTBULB
THAT LOVES THE DARK.
AH, DON'T MIND ME.
I'M IN CREATIVE MODE.
SPEAKING OF WHICH.
BACK TO THE STUDIO.
Back in the studio, Mikaela wears a special suit like the one seen on cartoon.
She says IT'S FINALLY TIME TO TRY
MY HAND AT PERFORMANCE CAPTURE,
SO I'M ALL SUITED UP.
I'M READY.
Michelle says THIS IS EDWIN.
HE'S GONNA START
MARKERING YOU UP.
As she shakes hands with Edwin, Mikaela says HI, EDWIN.
Edwin is in his twenties, tall, clean-shaven, with short black hair.
As he places adhesive markers on the suit, Michelle says HE'S GONNA PUT THESE
RETROREFLECTIVE MARKERS
ALL OVER YOUR SUIT.
SO, YOU'LL SEE
THAT YOU ALREADY HAVE SOME
ON YOUR HANDS AND FEET,
BUT THEY HAVE TO GO ALL OVER
NEAR YOUR JOINTS ON YOUR BODY.
SO, WHERE
YOUR BODY BENDS AND MOVES
SO THAT THE SYSTEM CAN TRACK
YOUR MOVEMENT ACCURATELY.
Mikaela says SO WHY DO WE NEED THE MARKERS?
Michelle says THE CAMERAS
ACTUALLY EMIT INFRARED LIGHT
AND THE HUMAN EYE
CAN'T SEE THIS,
BUT THESE LITTLE MARKERS
DEFINITELY CAN.
THAT INFRARED LIGHT
CAUSES THESE GUYS TO GLOW
AND THAT LIGHT IS REFLECTED
BACK INTO THE CAMERAS.
AND THEN THE COMPUTER
CAN SEE YOUR BODY AS A SKELETON.
Mikaela says I'M PRETTY SURE
I HAVE A SKELETON.
Michelle says I GUESS THE COMPUTER
WILL DECIDE.
LAST, BUT NOT LEAST,
WE'RE GONNA PUT GLASSES ON YOU
SO THAT THE SYSTEM CAN
UNDERSTAND THAT YOU HAVE A HEAD.
As she puts on special glasses, Mikaela says I HAVE A HEAD.
OR AT LEAST NOW I DO.
(LAUGHING)
Michelle says SO YOU CAN MOVE
AROUND A LITTLE BIT.
GET COMFORTABLE IN THE SUIT.
THIS IS YOUR NEW BODY.
The three move around and dance.
Then, Michelle says OKAY, MIKAELA, FIRST STEP, WE'RE
GONNA RUN YOU THROUGH A ROM.
IT STANDS FOR RANGE OF MOTION.
IT'S BASICALLY
A BUNCH OF EXERCISES
WHICH ALLOWS THE COMPUTER
TO CREATE A VIRTUAL SKELETON.
Mikaela says RANGE OF MOTION.
GOT IT.
Michelle says DO YOU WANNA START?
Mikaela says YES.
Michelle says TAKE IT AWAY, EDWIN.
Edwin says CAN I GET YOU
TO T POSE, MIKAELA?
Mikaela holds up her arms forming a T.
As she moves, a stick figure on a computer screen performs the same movements.
Edwin says OKAY, NOW HANDS ON YOUR SIDES.
BRING THEM BACK UP.
DOWN, AND UP.
AND THEN EXTEND.
WIGGLE YOUR FINGERS.
NOW, MAKE A FIST.
OPEN UP.
ON THIS SIDE.
OVER AGAIN, THEN UP.
AND BIG CIRCLES WITH YOUR ARMS.
GO THE OTHER WAY.
OKAY, NOW TAKE
FOUR STEPS FORWARD.
Mikaela says ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR.
Edwin says AND FOUR STEPS BACKWARDS.
Mikaela says ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR.
Edwin says SIGNATURE MOVE.
He performs a karate kick.
(MAKING KARATE SOUNDS)
Mikaela imitates the motion.
Edwin says AWESOME.
Michelle says SO THIS ROM
IS ALLOWING THE COMPUTER
TO CREATE A VIRTUAL SKELETON.
ONCE WE HAVE YOUR SKELETON,
IT'S GOING TO BE DRIVEN BY
THE MARKERS ALL OVER YOUR BODY.
AND THAT'S GOING TO ALLOW US
TO SCALE YOUR SKELETON UP,
SCALE IT DOWN,
SO THAT DIFFERENT
KINDS OF CHARACTERS
CAN BE DRIVEN BY YOUR BODY.
Mikaela says SO, I CAN BECOME
A 10,000 POUND GORILLA?
OR AN INTERDIMENSIONAL
SNAKE MONSTER?
OR A RADIOACTIVE,
FIRE-BREATHING DINOSAUR?
In cartoons, she turns into a fire-breathing T-rex.
(ROARING)
Mikaela says BUT WHAT IF I WANNA USE A PROP?
LIKE A BANANA?
OR A PAINT BRUSH?
OR A SNEAKER?
(SNIFFING)
Michelle says WE MARK OUR PROPS
IN THE SAME WAY
THAT WE MARK OUR ACTORS.
FOR EXAMPLE, THIS FLOWER.
She picks up a wooden flower with several markers on it and says OUR MARKERS ARE RIGHT HERE,
HERE, HERE, AND HERE.
Mikaela says OKAY, COOL.
Michelle says SO, MIKAELA, NOW THAT
WE HAVE YOUR VIRTUAL SKELETON,
IT'S TIME TO MEET THE NEW YOU.
She moves a large flat screen up to Mikaela. The screen shows a three-dimensional character in a spacesuit. It moves exactly like Mikaela, in real time.
Mikaela says WHOA!
IS THAT REALLY ME?
Michelle says YEP.
WELL, THAT'S YOU DRIVING JUDGE.
HE'S AN ALIEN
FROM ONE OF OUR GAMES
THAT'S IN PRODUCTION RIGHT NOW
IN ONE OF OUR TEST ENVIRONMENTS.
As she continues to move and watch the alien on the screen do the same, Mikaela says THIS IS SO FUN.
HOW DID YOU
TURN MY BODY INTO THAT?
Michelle says SO, SINCE THE COMPUTER
KNOWS YOUR SKELETON,
AND KNOWS JUDGE'S SKELETON,
THEY CAN BASICALLY
MEET IN THE MIDDLE
AND THEN LET
YOUR MARKERS DRIVE JUDGE.
WHAT'S UP, JUDGE?
As she dances, she says I'M JUDGE.
I'M JUDGE.
I'M MIKAELA JUDGE.
Michelle says SO NOW IT'S TIME
FOR THE BEST PART OF MY JOB.
LET'S HAVE SOME FUN.
She and Mikaela dance.
Mikaela says LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
I GIVE YOU THE DANCING ROBOT.
ONCE UPON A TIME,
THERE WAS A LONELY ROBOT.
HE WISHED, AND HE WISHED
HE COULD JUST DANCE.
BUT HE WAS A ROBOT,
SO HE COULDN'T.
BUT, WITH PRACTICE...
AND HE PRACTISED.
As she dances, the robot does the same. They spin and twirl.
Mikaela says HE WENT TO HIS FIRST CONCERT.
EVERYBODY LOVED HIM.
AND HE BECAME
THE FIRST EVER DANCING ROBOT.
She bows.
Edwin says BRAVO.
Mikaela says SCENE.
Now a 3D figure of a girl that looks like Mikaela appears on screen and moves as Mikaela speaks.
She says THIS REAL TIME PERFORMANCE
CAPTURE IS THE COOLEST.
IT MAKES MY BODY
LOOK WAY DIFFERENT.
I JUST WONDER HOW
THEY CAPTURE PEOPLE'S FACES
TO TELL IF THEY'RE HAPPY OR SAD.
Mikaela and Michelle sit next to each other.
As she shows Mikaela an electronic headpiece with several sensors, Michelle says MIKAELA,
IN ORDER TO CAPTURE REALLY
COMPLEX FACIAL EXPRESSIONS
WE USE ONE OF THESE.
IT'S CALLED AN HMC,
OR A HEAD-MOUNTED CAMERA.
WANNA TRY IT ON?
Mikaela says SURE.
She puts on the headpiece, which contains several cameras pointed at her face.
Michelle says THERE YOU GO.
YOU CAN SEE HERE THERE ARE
A FEW CAMERAS INWARD FACING
THAT ARE CAPTURING ALL
OF YOUR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS.
USUALLY WE'LL PUT
MARKERS ON YOUR FACE
JUST LIKE THE ONES
THAT WERE ON YOUR BODY BEFORE.
THESE CAMERAS WILL PICK UP
THE WAY THAT THEY MOVE
AND ALLOW OUR ANIMATORS
TO REPLICATE THEM
AND CREATE REALLY
REALISTIC EXPRESSIONS.
As she mimics facial expressions, Mikaela says SO, IT WILL KNOW IF I'M HAPPY?
OR SAD.
OR CONFUSED.
OR ANGRY.
WITH THE CLICK OF A FEW BUTTONS,
YOU CAN TRANSFORM
INTO ANYTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE.
BE IT A ROBOT.
A LION.
(ROARING)
OR A DINOSAUR.
(CRASHING)
ANYTHING.
MOTION CAPTURE MAKES VIDEOGAMES
AND MOVIES TOTALLY AMAZING.
I THINK
I FIGURED OUT WHAT TO DO.
AND IT'S TO TRY MORE JOBS.
THE HUNT CONTINUES.
JOIN ME NEXT TIME
WHEN I CAPTURE THE MOTION
OF DISCOVERING
WHAT I'LL BE WHEN I GROW UP.
The clip ends.
Back in Teacher Arianna's room, a caption reads "Storyboarding."
Arianna says FROM THAT CLIP,
WE LEARNED THAT STORYBOARDING
IS A GREAT FIRST STEP
IN BRINGING OUR IDEAS TO LIFE.
WHILE MIKAELA USED IT TO
ACTUALLY KIND OF SHOW THE STORY
OF HER MONSTER DANCING AROUND,
WE CAN ACTUALLY USE IT IN ORDER
TO HELP US TO FIGURE OUT
THE STEPS
FOR SOLVING OUR PROBLEM.
SO, WHAT WE'RE GONNA BE DOING
OVER THE NEXT LITTLE BIT
IS DRAWING SOME
OF THOSE STEPS OUT
AND DOING A STORYBOARD
IN A SIMILAR WAY.
BEFORE WE BEGIN,
LET'S TAKE A QUICK BREAK.
I KNOW THAT FOR ME,
GETTING UP AND MOVING
IS ALWAYS A GREAT WAY TO KIND OF
GET MYSELF ENERGIZED AND FOCUSED
WHEN I'VE GOT
A BIG TASK AHEAD OF ME.
SO, TO DO THAT, HERE'S MICKEEY,
AND HE'S GONNA
HELP US TO LEARN A NEW DANCE.
IT'S PROBABLY ONE OF
MY FAVOURITES, OR, AT LEAST,
THE NAME IS MY FAVOURITE.
I PRESENT TO YOU
THE FUNKY CHICKEN.
Mickeey appears inside a warehouse. He's in his twenties, clean-shaven, with short black hair.
He says YO!
WHAT'S UP?
WHAT'S GOIN' ON, MOVERS?
WE'RE GONNA BE LEARNING
ONE OF THE FUNNEST DANCES EVER.
DON'T BE A CHICKEN.
JUST DO THE FUNKY CHICKEN.
HEY!
A caption appears on screen. It reads "Funky chicken."
He closes his fists, holds them close to his body and shakes his elbows as if they were chicken wings.
He says GRAB YOUR WINGS
AND FLY, YOU GUYS.
IT'S TIME TO LEARN
THE FUNKY CHICKEN.
LET'S GO CHECK IN AND SEE
WHAT OUR FEET ARE DOING.
FEET ARE SO EASY.
As he performs the movements he mentions, he says
YOU'RE GONNA TAKE YOUR STEPS
FRONT TOGETHER, FRONT TOGETHER,
THEN STEPS BACK.
FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, TOGETHER.
TO REPEAT.
ONE, TOGETHER.
TWO, TOGETHER.
STEP IT BACK.
FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT.
LET'S GO CHECK IN
WITH THE WINGS.
YOU'RE GONNA FLAP IT
DOWN, DOWN, AND DOWN, DOWN.
TAKE IT BACK.
FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, REPEAT.
TAKE IT DOWN,
AND DOWN, DOWN, DOWN.
AND FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT.
PUT THE FEET
AND THE HANDS TOGETHER
AND YOU'VE GOT YOURSELVES
THE FUNKY CHICKEN.
MUSIC AND FRIENDS!
A young woman and a young man join him in and imitate his movements.
As the three dance, Mickeey says
FIVE, SIX, SEVEN.
STEP TO THE SIDE.
STEP TO THE SIDE.
FLAP YOUR WINGS, GUYS.
HERE WE GO.
HEY, TWO, THREE, FOUR.
FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT.
WOO!
Mickeey's friends leave.
He says GUESS WHAT, GUYS!
YOU JUST MOVED WITH MICKEEY.
SEE YA!
He disappears.
Back in Arianna's room, she says
SO, NOW THAT WE'VE HAD A CHANCE
TO GET FUNKY, I'M READY.
AND I HOPE THAT YOU ARE TOO.
SO, WE'RE GONNA START OFF
BY BREAKING UP OUR PAGE
SIMILAR TO MIKAELA.
AND I'M GONNA ACTUALLY
BE DRAWING DOWN HERE.
AND THEN I'LL SHOW IT TO YOU.
AND I'LL SHOW YOU
KIND OF WHAT I'M WORKING ON.
SO, GRAB YOUR SHEET OF PAPER.
AND GRAB YOUR WRITING TOO L.
I'M JUST GONNA USE
A REGULAR SHARPIE.
SO, WHAT MIKAELA DID
WAS SHE ACTUALLY BROKE UP
HER PAGE INTO QUARTERS.
SO, LET'S DO THAT.
YOUR PAGE SHOULD LOOK
SOMETHING LIKE THIS.
She holds up a page with two lines that divide it into four squares.
She says AGAIN, IT DOESN'T HAVE
TO BE PERFECTLY EQUAL,
BUT WE'RE TRYING
TO JUST BREAK UP OUR PAGE.
NOW THAT WE'VE DONE THAT,
I JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING.
WHEN WE'RE SOLVING A PROBLEM,
SOMETIMES WE'RE ACTUALLY GONNA
CREATE A PHYSICAL SOLUTION.
SO WE MIGHT
BE CREATING SOMETHING
THAT YOU ACTUALLY BUILD.
AND OTHER TIMES YOU MIGHT
BE ACTUALLY CREATING A SERVICE
OR A PROGRAM FOR SOMEONE.
EITHER WAY,
WE'RE GONNA TRY AND SEE
IF WE CAN USE THIS STORYBOARD
TO HELP GUIDE US ALONG THE WAY.
SO, IF YOU'RE MAKING
A PHYSICAL SOLUTION,
HERE ARE SOME INSTRUCTIONS
THAT ARE GONNA HELP YOU
AS YOU'RE DOING YOUR STORYBOARD.
YOU'RE PROBABLY GONNA START OFF
WITH, AT LEAST IN THE FIRST BOX,
THINKING ABOUT
WHERE YOU'RE GONNA BEGIN.
IF I'M MAKING A ROBOT, I'M GONNA
TRY AND BE ABLE TO FIGURE OUT,
MAYBE I'LL WORK ON HIS TORSO.
I MIGHT WANNA ALSO THINK
ABOUT MATERIALS THAT I NEED.
SO, IN YOUR FIRST BOX,
I WANT YOU THINK ABOUT,
"WHAT'S STEP ONE?"
WHAT'S THE FIRST THING
THAT YOU'RE GONNA DO?
MAYBE YOU HAVE TO START THINKING
ABOUT YOUR MATERIALS.
WHAT ARE YOU GONNA NEED?
AND THEN, FROM THERE,
IN BOXES TWO, THREE, AND FOUR,
YOU'RE GONNA START
TO MAYBE CONTINUE THOSE STEPS.
ONCE YOU'VE CREATED THE TORSO,
WHAT DO YOU CREATE NEXT?
WHAT MATERIALS ARE YOU
GONNA NEED FOR THAT PART?
IF YOU'RE CREATING A PROGRAM
OR SERVICE DURING THIS TIME
IT'S PROBABLY GOING TO BE HARD
TO GET YOUR MESSAGE
OUT TO PEOPLE.
SO, YOU MIGHT WANNA BE ABLE
TO CREATE AN APP OR A WEBSITE
SO THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY TELL
MORE PEOPLE ABOUT THIS SERVICE
THAT YOU'RE GONNA OFFER.
SO, FOR YOU, YOU MIGHT ACTUALLY
HAVE TO BE USING YOUR STORYBOARD
IN ORDER TO DRAW OUT,
MAYBE THE SCREENS FOR YOUR APP,
OR MAYBE THE SCREENS
FOR YOUR WEBSITE.
EITHER WAY, YOU'RE GONNA
HAVE TO USE A STORYBOARD
TO KIND OF GET YOURSELF GOING
AND THINKING ABOUT YOUR IDEA.
SO, MAYBE BOX ONE,
IF YOU'RE DOING A SERVICE,
IS YOUR WELCOME PAGE.
WHAT ARE PEOPLE GONNA SEE WHEN
THEY COME TO YOUR WEBSITE?
OR WHAT ARE THEY GONNA SEE
WHEN THEY COME TO YOUR APP?
SO, FOR MY PROBLEM WITH CLOTHING
THAT I WAS WORKING ON BEFORE,
I DECIDED THAT I WANTED
TO BE ABLE TO CREATE AN APP.
SO, I'M GONNA
FOCUS IN ON AN APP.
WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO DURING
THIS TIME IS DRAW AS I DRAW.
I'M GONNA DRAW OUT SOMETHING.
I'M GONNA
SHARE IT BACK WITH YOU.
BUT I WANT YOU
TO JUST USE THIS TIME TO DRAW.
SO IF YOU'RE
WORKING ON A PRODUCT,
MAKE SURE THAT YOU'RE THINKING
ABOUT THE ACTUAL STEPS.
WHERE AM I GOING TO BEGIN?
WHAT MATERIALS DO I NEED?
IF YOU'RE WORKING
ON A SERVICE OR A PROGRAM,
YOU WANNA THINK ABOUT
A WEBSITE OR AN APP.
WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE?
WHAT'S THAT HOME SCREEN GONNA
LOOK LIKE WHEN YOU FIRST BEGIN?
AND THEN, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE
OTHER FEATURES THAT ARE THERE?
SO, LET'S GET STARTED.
FOR ME, I'M ACTUALLY GOING
TO BE ABLE TO CREATE AN APP.
SO, I'M GONNA START OFF
AND I'M GONNA DRAW
A LITTLE SOMETHIN'
SOMETHIN' FOR YOU HERE.
Inside square 1 she draws a smartphone.
She says THERE'S MY APP.
I KNOW IT'S NOT PERFECT.
IT'S ACTUALLY
PROBABLY ON ITS SIDE.
THAT MIGHT WORK BETTER.
AND NOW WHAT I'M GONNA DO IS
I'VE DECIDED THAT IT'S
GONNA BE A CLOTHING EXCHANGE.
SO, FOR ME, I'M GONNA
DRAW A FEW ARROWS IN HERE.
'CAUSE EXCHANGE,
I THINK ABOUT ARROWS.
She adds clothes and arrows into the phone.
She says YOU'RE CHANGING THINGS AROUND.
SO, I'M GONNA DRAW ARROWS.
I AM GOING TO DRAW
SOME CLOTHING ITEMS.
AND I'M GONNA CALL IT
THE CLOTHING XCHANGE.
I THINK I'M GONNA BE NEAT.
INSTEAD OF "EXCHANGE,"
I'M GONNA DO IT
AS "XCHANGE," LIKE THAT.
AND MAYBE I'M GONNA WANT
TO BE ABLE TO DO
SOME ARROWS HERE FOR MY "X."
I DON'T KNOW YET.
I ALSO WANNA THINK OF
MAYBE SOME BRIGHT COLOURS
THAT I'M GONNA ADD.
SO, I'VE GOT MY MARKERS HERE.
I'M GONNA ADD
SOME BRIGHT COLOURS.
MAYBE MY T-SHIRT'S
GOING TO BE PINK.
As she paints her drawing, she says
'CAUSE I THINK BRIGHT COLOURS
ARE GOING TO ATTRACT PEOPLE
AND THEY'RE GONNA BE REALLY,
REALLY EXCITED TO CHECK OUT
MY SITE IF THEY SEE THAT.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE FEATURES
THAT YOU THINK
YOU MIGHT NEED TO ADD?
I AM JUST COLOURING THEM IN.
THIS IS MY WELCOME PAGE.
SO, ON MY APP, YOU'RE
ALSO GOING TO HAVE A LOG IN.
SO, I'M GOING TO DO MINE
A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENTLY.
I'M GONNA PUT IT
RIGHT AT THE TOP.
IT'S A LOGIN BUTTON.
AND...
SO, THERE YOU GO.
THAT'S KIND OF MY WELCOME SCREEN
WHEN PEOPLE ACTUALLY COME.
IT'S NOT BEAUTIFUL,
BUT I'M GIVING IT A TRY.
OKAY, SO FROM THERE, ONE OF
THE FEATURES THAT I'M INCLUDING,
AND I'M GONNA DRAW THAT
IN MY SECOND BOX OVER HERE,
IS THAT PEOPLE CAN ACTUALLY
CONNECT WITH OTHER PEOPLE
TO EXCHANGE THEIR CLOTHING.
As she draws inside square 2, she says
SO, I'M GONNA DRAW TWO PEOPLE.
AGAIN, IT DOESN'T NEED
TO BE ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.
THEY'RE GONNA HAVE SMILES 'CAUSE
THEY'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT
EXCHANGING THEIR CLOTHING.
AND I'M ACTUALLY GOING TO DRAW
A SYMBOL THAT I THINK OF
WHEN I THINK ABOUT MAPS.
AND I'M GOING TO PUT TORONTO.
AND, MAYBE THEY'VE GOT
CLOTHING IN THEIR HANDS.
IT'S A REALLY TINY SHIRT
FOR SOME REASON.
AND A REALLY TINY
PAIR OF SHORTS FOR SOME REASON.
I'M NOT SURE.
BUT THERE YOU GO.
THAT'S MY SECOND SCREEN.
THAT'S WHAT I THINK.
SO IT'S AN OPPORTUNITY
TO HAVE A MAP.
MAYBE I'M GOING TO WRITE
"WHERE DO YOU LIVE?"
AND THEY CAN CLICK ON
MAYBE A COMMUNITY.
AND THEN,
THAT'S ONE WAY THAT THEY
CAN CONNECT WITH EACH OTHER.
SO, THAT'S MY SECOND OPTION.
AND THEN, ON MY APP,
I'M ALSO GOING
TO HAVE A PLACE FOR DIY VIDEOS.
THOSE DO-IT-YOURSELF VIDEOS
THAT ARE REALLY, REALLY COOL.
As she draws inside square 3, she says
SO, I'M GONNA PUT IN
A COUPLE OF VIDEO BOXES HERE.
AND, I ALWAYS THINK
OF VIDEO BOXES FOR SOME REASON
AS HAVING LIKE,
RED SYMBOLS TO CLICK PLAY.
SO, I'M GONNA DRAW THEM.
YOU KEEP DRAWING.
YOU'RE THINKING
ABOUT YOUR PROBLEM.
YOU KEEP DRAWING
'CAUSE I'M JUST GONNA DRAW AWAY.
SO, VIDEOS,
THIS IS GONNA BE A T-SHIRT.
THIS ONE'S GONNA BE SHORTS.
JEANS.
THIS ONE'S GONNA BE
ANOTHER T-SHIRT.
THIS ONE'S GONNA BE A SKIRT.
PANTS.
PERFECT.
TAKE A LOOK.
SO, I'VE GOT SOME VIDEOS.
She holds up the drawing of a phone running an app that shows six videos.
She says AND THESE ARE GONNA BE VIDEOS
OF PEOPLE ACTUALLY SHARING
HOW YOU'RE ABLE
TO REPURPOSE YOUR CLOTHING,
WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH THEM,
HOW DO YOU
MAKE THEM EXCITING AGAIN,
IF THAT'S WHAT YOU WANNA DO.
SO, PERFECT.
I GOT THAT ONE.
AND THEN THE LAST FEATURE
THAT I WANT TO DO,
IS I WANT PEOPLE
TO KIND OF FEEL REALLY PROUD
WHEN THEY REPURPOSE THEIR ITEMS.
I WANT THEM TO FEEL LIKE,
"OOH, COOL."
SO I'M GONNA DO A PROFILE PAGE.
As she draws inside square 4 she says
THEY'RE GONNA HAVE THEIR NAME,
MAYBE THEIR AGE.
AND THEN THEY'RE GONNA HAVE
SOMETHING CALLED MY CREATIONS.
AND THEY CAN
ADD IN SOME PICTURES.
SO, THERE YOU GO.
THAT'S MY SECOND PART.
ON THIS PART OF THE APP,
IT'S GONNA BE A PROFILE.
I'VE GOT MY NAME, ARIANNA.
AGE, I JUST WROTE BIG NUMBER,
'CAUSE YOU DON'T NEED
TO KNOW THAT NUMBER YET.
AND THEN, ALL OF A SUDDEN
AT THE BOTTOM HERE,
I'VE GOT MY CREATIONS.
SO, I MADE A T-SHIRT
AND I'M PUTTING THAT OUT THERE.
SO, THESE ARE JUST DIFFERENT
IDEAS THAT I HAVE FOR MY APP.
I KIND OF STORYBOARDED IT.
AND I FEEL REALLY GREAT
ABOUT GETTING IT DOWN
ON A PIECE OF PAPER BECAUSE
IT HELPED ME TO KIND OF THINK
THROUGH ALL OF MY IDEAS,
BEFORE I CREATED MY APP.
IMAGINE IF I CREATED MY APP
AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN,
I WAS KIND OF LOST AND THERE
WERE THINGS I NEEDED TO ADD
AND IT WAS REALLY, REALLY HARD
TO KIND OF WORK BACKWARDS?
NOW, AT LEAST,
I CAN CHECK IT OUT
AND SEE IF IT'S SOMETHING
THAT MY USERS WANT.
AND NOW, I ACTUALLY THINK THAT
I'VE GOT A COUPLE OF USERS
THAT I CAN TEST IT OUT WITH.
SO, WHILE I GO AND CHECK IN
WITH ONE OF MY USERS,
I WANT YOU TO GET UP
AND GET MOVING.
YOU'VE BEEN WORKING REALLY HARD
COMING UP WITH YOUR IDEAS SO FAR
FOR YOUR STORYBOARD.
SO, HERE'S GREG.
CHECK OUT HIS DANCE.
AND, WHILE YOU'RE WATCHING,
THINK ABOUT IF THERE'S
A DANCE YOU CAN CREATE,
BASED ON MAYBE
SOME OF THE MOVEMENTS
THAT YOU USE EVERY SINGLE DAY.
LET'S WATCH.
In a clip, Greg stands inside a bedroom and points at his wrist.
He sings
IT'S TIME TO DO
THE PHYSICAL DISTANCING DANCE
THE WHAT?
IT'S TIME TO DO
THE PHYSICAL DISTANCING DANCE
OKAY...
In a music clip he dances and washes his hands as a song says
First turn on the tap so you can wash your hands. That's how you start the physical distancing dance. A 20-second wash, you'll leave the germs no chance except to fear when you do the physical distancing dance. Step back!
HOW FAR?
2 metres is the answer to your question, I should mention. It's so COVID cannot transfer. Remember!
WHAT?
That when you cough or sneeze don't do it in your hands. Do it in your sleeve!
TURN ON THE TAP,
TURN ON THE TAP
WASH YOUR HANDS,
WASH YOUR HANDS
STEP BACK,
STEP BACK
AND WHEN YOU COUGH OR SNEEZE,
DO IT IN YOUR SLEEVES
TURN ON THE TAP,
TURN ON THE TAP
WASH YOUR HANDS,
WASH YOUR HANDS
STEP BACK,
STEP BACK
AND WHEN YOU COUGH OR SNEEZE,
DO IT IN YOUR SLEEVES. ACHOO!
Remember when you're lonely doesn't mean that you're alone. Everybody's physical distancing at home. So everybody dance. I mean you're watching TV so you've got no reason to not dance with me!
As Laura, Greg and Lucas appear on split screens dancing to the song, it continues
GO, LAURA,
GO, LUCAS
GO, GREG,
GO, KIDS
YEAH, YOU'D BETTER BE
WASHING THOSE HANDS.
YOU'RE WATCHING TVOKIDS.
AH-AH-CHOO!
The clip ends.
Arianna says SO, FANTASTIC.
WHILE I WAS JUST CHECKING IN
WITH SOMEONE ON MY APP,
I WAS ALSO DOING
A LITTLE BIT OF MOVEMENT.
SO HOPEFULLY YOU ARE READY
TO GET GOING TO THIS NEXT PART.
YOU HAD A CHANCE
TO DRAW OUT YOUR STORYBOARD.
AND NOW WE'RE GONNA
START THINKING ABOUT
"HOW DO WE
BRING THIS IDEA TO LIFE?"
AND, I KNOW I KEEP SAYING THAT.
BEFORE YOU DO,
I WANT US TO BE ABLE TO CREATE
SOMETHING CALLED A PROTOTYPE.
A caption appears on screen. It reads "Prototype."
Arianna continues WHAT IT IS IS IT'S SOMETHING
THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY PUT
IN THE HANDS OF YOUR USERS
SO THAT THEY CAN TEST OUT AND
SEE WHETHER OR NOT THEY LIKE IT.
IT GIVES THEM AN OPPORTUNITY
TO BE ABLE
TO GIVE YOU SOME FEEDBACK.
AND AS THEY TEST IT OUT, YOU'RE
ABLE TO MAKE THOSE ITERATIONS,
THOSE CHANGES THAT
ARE GONNA MAKE YOUR PROTOTYPE,
OR YOUR SOLUTION, EVEN BETTER.
SO EVERYTHING
THAT GETS MADE EN MASSE,
SO EVERYTHING THAT KIND OF
COMES OUT OF A FACTORY,
REALLY REQUIRES PEOPLE
TO GO OUT AND TEST IT FIRST.
YOU DON'T WANT TO MAKE
A WHOLE BUNCH OF SOMETHING
AND THEN REALIZE
THAT PEOPLE DON'T WANT IT,
PEOPLE AREN'T INTERESTED IN IT,
AND THAT THEY
DON'T REALLY LIKE IT AT ALL.
SO, WHAT GOOD WOULD THAT BE?
I'M GONNA GIVE YOU
AN EXAMPLE OF SOMETHING.
LET'S THINK UP OF...
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE
ICE CREAM FLAVOUR?
IS IT CHOCOLATE?
VANILLA?
ROCKY ROAD?
WHATEVER IT IS, SOMEONE
ACTUALLY TOOK THE TIME
TO BE ABLE
TO DESIGN THAT FLAVOUR.
WHAT WE'RE GONNA DO NOW,
IS WE'RE GONNA CHECK OUT
THE JOB OF AN ICE CREAM MAKER.
HERE'S MIKAELA AGAIN, AND SHE'S
GONNA TAKE YOU ON A CLOSE LOOK
AT WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE
AN ICE CREAM MAKER FOR A DAY.
LET'S WATCH.
Mikaela appears eating vegetables from a plate.
She says HEY, WORLD.
WELCOME BACK TO MY VLOG.
I'M JUST FINISHING UP
SOME DELICIOUS VEGGIES.
I'VE GOTTA SAY.
CARROTS ARE MY FAVOURITE.
I LIKE TO...
(MUMBLING)
MM-MM-MM-MM-MM!
Now as she eats ice cream she says OH, HI.
MUST'VE LOST
THE FEED FOR A SECOND.
AS YOU CAN SEE,
I'M ON DESSERT: ICE CREAM.
I LOVE VEGETABLES,
BUT WHO DOESN'T LOVE
THIS WONDERFUL STUFF?
CAN YOU BELIEVE
IT'S SOMEBODY'S JOB
TO USE SCIENCE TO CREATE
NEW FLAVOURS OF ICE CREAM?
IT DOESN'T GET
SWEETER THAN THAT.
I'M GONNA FIND OUT WHAT IT TAKES
SO I CAN MAKE WONDERFULLY
SCRUMPTIOUS NEW FLAVOURS
OF ICE CREAM.
WHEN I GROW UP!
MMM.
Now standing outside an industrial facility, she says HERE I AM
AT A GIANT ICE CREAM FACTORY
READY TO BECOME
AN ICE CREAM MAKER.
AND ONE THING'S FOR SURE.
I'M NOT WAITING 'TIL I GROW UP.
I'M GETTING ICE CREAM TODAY.
THIS PLACE IS MASSIVE.
OVER 600 PEOPLE WORK HERE.
TO BE HONEST,
IT COULD USE A LITTLE MUSIC.
(MONKS CHANTING)
DEFINITELY NOT.
(ICE CREAM TRUCK MUSIC PLAYING)
PERFECT.
She turns around and says OH, HI, KEITH.
A man approaches and says HI, MIKAELA.
He's in his fifties, with short gray hair, a beard and glasses.
A caption appears on screen. It reads "Keith. Ice cream maker."
Mikaela says KEITH IS THE DIRECTOR OF
TECHNICAL SERVICES HERE.
KEITH, WHAT DOES
THAT TITLE MEAN?
Keith says THAT MEANS
I'M IN CHARGE OF QUALITY
AND NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT.
SO EVERY DAY
I GET TO MAKE TASTY NEW TREATS.
Mikaela says TASTY TREATS YOU SAY?
Keith says EVERY DAY.
Mikaela says THEN WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR?
(ECHOING)
Later, standing near a double door, Keith says MIKAELA,
BEFORE WE GO INTO THE PLANT
WE HAVE TO PUT ON SAFETY GEAR
TO MAKE SURE WE'RE PROTECTED
AND TO MAKE SURE
THE FOOD'S SAFE.
Mikaela says LET'S DO IT.
Keith says OKAY.
In fast motion they put on lab coats, face masks, hair nets, hardhats and boots, then walk into another room.
As she places her hands inside a machine that lights a green light, Mikaela says
SAFETY FIRST.
Then she does the same with a machine that cleans her boots and says SAFETY FIRST.
As they step into a factory she says WHOA!
Keith says THIS IS THE FACTORY.
Fast clips show machines pouring ice cream into plastic containers and sealing the lids.
Mikaela says YUMMY!
Keith says SO, DO YOU WANNA
COME UP HERE AND CHECK THIS OUT?
Mikaela says YEAH.
Keith says JUST CLIMB ON UP.
Mikaela says WHAT?
A large machine with a robotic arm places wooden sticks into dozens of lollies at once.
Keith says SO, THIS IS WHERE
THE LOLLIES GET FROZEN UP.
He hands one to Mikaela and says NOW, THAT'S A FUN TREAT!
She eats.
Later she inspects a machine that packages the lollies and says
COOL.
I NEED A MOMENT.
IT'S BEAUTIFUL.
IT'S JUST SO BEAUTIFUL.
She pretends to dry tears.
(SOBBING)
Back in her lab she serves a ice cream cone as she says
CAREFUL, CAREFUL.
I'M IN THE MIDDLE
OF SETTING MY PERSONAL RECORD
FOR ICE CREAM CONE STACKING.
ONE WRONG BREATH
AND THIS WHOLE CREAMY OPERATION
COULD COME TUMBLING DOWN.
THAT KEITH IS ONE COOL CUSTOMER.
IT MADE ME WONDER HOW HE GOT
TO BE AN ICE CREAM MAKER
IN THE FIRST PLACE.
SO CHECK THIS OUT!
I MEAN, CHECK THIS OUT.
An animated slate reads "When they were growing up! By Mikaela."
As a storyboard shows a child eating ice cream, Mikaela narrates
EVER SINCE HE CAN REMEMBER,
KEITH HAS HAD A SWEET TOOTH.
WHEN HE WAS VERY YOUNG,
HE TRIED TO EAT SUGAR
RIGHT OUT OF THE BOWL.
KEITH'S PARENTS LIKED
TO TAKE HIM AND HIS BROTHER
TO THE ICE CREAM SHOP.
HIS FAVOURITE FLAVOUR
WAS MINT CHIP.
A teenager looks at a test tube inside a lab.
Mikaela narrates IN SCHOOL, KEITH STUDIED SCIENCE
AND BECAME A FOOD TECHNICIAN.
FIRST HE WORKED WITH CHOCOLATE
AND THEN ICE CREAM.
A bearded, older Keith pours chocolate chips into a machine.
Mikaela narrates NOW, KEITH GETS TO
TASTE TREATS EVERY DAY.
A KID'S DREAM.
As she holds up a cone with several scoops, Mikaela says I DID IT!
EIGHT SCOOPS!
A
WHEN I GROW UP
RECORD!
ALL RIGHT, BACK TO THE...
(YELLING)
(SPLATTERING)
As she and Keith step into a lab he says
SO THIS IS OUR RESEARCH
AND DEVELOPMENT LAB.
THIS IS WHERE WE START MAKING
ALL THE COOL, NEW TREATS.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO MAKE
A NEW FLAVOUR OF ICE CREAM?
Mikaela says YES.
Keith says FIRST THING
WE HAVE TO DO IS MAKE THE MIX.
Mikaela says WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY MIX?
Keith says WELL, MIX IS THE BASE
FOR ALL THE ICE CREAMS.
WE CAN EITHER MAKE A WHITE MIX,
WHICH WE CAN USE
FOR VANILLA, OR OTHER FLAVOURS,
OR, WE CAN MAKE A BROWN MIX
WHICH GOES INTO CHOCOLATE.
Mikaela says HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO CHOOSE?
I MEAN, CHOCOLATE.
VANILLA.
CHOCOLATE?
VANILLA?
CHOCOLATE, VANILLA, VANILLA.
(SPEAKING LIKE A CHIPMUNK)
(GASPING)
I'VE MADE MY DECISION.
MY ICE CREAM FLAVOUR
WILL BE VANILLA.
Keith says SO, THE FIRST THING WE HAVE TO
DO IS WE HAVE TO ADD SUCROSE,
WHICH IS LIQUID SUGAR,
INTO THE BLENDER.
SO, IF YOU JUST WANT TO POUR
THAT IN UNTIL I SAY STOP.
YOU'RE NOT GONNA USE ALL OF IT.
As she pours a thick transparent liquid into a blender, he says
THE LIQUID SUGAR,
THAT PROVIDES MOST OF
THE SWEETNESS FOR THE ICE CREAM.
AND, STOP.
THE NEXT THING WE ADD
IS LIQUID GLUCOSE.
SO, ADDING THE GLUCOSE IN
ADDS A BIT MORE SWEETNESS
AND IT ADDS SOME
TEXTURE TO THE ICE CREAM.
She pours a sticky yellow liquid.
He says PUT THE BLENDER ON THE BASE.
WE'RE GONNA TURN THE BLENDER ON
AND WE'RE GONNA BE ADDING
THE STABILIZER TO THE SUGAR.
THESE ARE THE COMPONENTS
THAT GIVE THE ICE CREAM
A LOT OF ITS BODY
AND THEY HELP TO KEEP
THE AIR IN THE ICE CREAM.
WE'LL TURN THE BLENDER ON.
As the blender runs, Mikaela adds a small amount of powder.
Keith says NOW, WE CAN ADD
THE OTHER COMPONENTS.
SO, WE START WITH THE HEART OF
ICE CREAM, WHICH IS THE CREAM.
SO, WE JUST
WANNA POUR THE CREAM.
WE'RE NOT GONNA USE IT ALL.
BUT JUST POUR IT IN
UNTIL I TELL YOU TO STOP.
Mikaela says THE HEART OF THE ICE CREAM.
Keith says THE NEXT COMPONENT
IS LIQUID WHEY.
THIS ADDS MORE PROTEIN
TO THE ICE CREAM
AND HELPS IT
BUILD STRUCTURE.
Mikaela says IT CAN'T WHEY-T
TO EAT THIS ICE CREAM.
(LAUGHING)
Keith says JUST ADD IN A LITTLE BIT OF
WATER JUST TO DILUTE THE CREAM
'CAUSE THERE'S
TOO MUCH FAT IN THE CREAM.
THAT SHOULD BE ABOUT ENOUGH.
THE NEXT THING WE HAVE TO DO
IS WE NEED TO COOK IT.
Mikaela says YOU COOK ICE CREAM?
Keith says ABSOLUTELY.
WE TAKE THE MIX WHICH HAS
RAW INGREDIENTS AND RAW CREAM
AND WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE WE KILL
ALL THE BACTERIA THAT'S IN THERE
AND MAKE SURE
IT'S CLEAN AND GOOD FOR USE.
ONCE WE COOK IT, WE COOL IT DOWN
AND THEN WE CAN
LOOK AT ADDING FLAVOURS.
IT'S COOKED.
IT'S COOLED.
AND IT'S READY TO BE FLAVOURED.
WHAT KIND OF FLAVOUR
WOULD YOU LIKE TO ADD TO THIS?
Mikaela says BROCCOLI!
I MEAN, NO.
MARSHMALLOWS.
Keith says MARSHMALLOW, IT IS.
He holds up a test tube and says THIS IS MARSHMALLOW FLAVOURING.
SMELL.
Mikaela says MARSHMALLOWS, ALL RIGHT.
Keith says SO, WHAT WE DO,
IS WHEN WE MEASURE OUT FLAVOUR
WE WANNA PUT IN THE ICE CREAM.
WOULD YOU LIKE
TO PUT THE FLAVOUR IN?
Mikaela says YEAH!
As he holds up a long measuring instrument he says ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS JUST HOLD
THAT AND SQUEEZE THAT BUTTON.
JUST SQUEEZE IT AT THE TOP.
NOW, THE FUN PART.
WE GET TO TASTE IT.
YOU JUST WANNA MIX IT IN THERE?
YOU'RE ON YOUR WAY
TO BECOMING AN ICE CREAM MAKER.
He pours the mixed ice cream into small cups and says CHEERS.
She tries it and says THAT'S GOOD MARSHMALLOW.
THE MIX IS FINISHED
AND IT TASTES DELICIOUS.
BUT, THE BEST PART TO ICE CREAM
IS THE BITS YOU ADD TO IT.
She walks up to several containers of candy holding an envelope.
(BREATHING DEEPLY)
She says YOU'VE ALL PUT IN AMAZINGLY
SWEET PERFORMANCES.
RASPBERRY RIPPLE, WHO COULD
FORGET YOUR POWERFUL WORK?
AND CHERRIES, YOU'VE MELTED
OUR HEARTS MORE THAN ONCE.
BUBBLE-GUM, CHOCOLATE BITS,
I MEAN, YOU'RE ALL WORTHY.
BUT, THERE CAN ONLY BE TWO
ADDITIONS TO MY SPECIAL TREAT.
AND, THE WINNER IS:
CARAMEL RIPPLE
AND CHOCOLATE COOKIE!
OH!
I LIKE YOU!
I REALLY LIKE YOU!
She and Keith walk up to a large machine.
He says THIS IS MY ICE CREAM MACHINE.
I USE THIS MACHINE TO TURN MIX
INTO ICE CREAM EVERY DAY.
SO, LET ME TURN THE MACHINE ON.
Mikaela says ALL MY HARD WORK
IS GONNA PAY OFF.
OOH!
Keith says PERFECT.
Mikaela says SO WHAT'S GOING ON
INSIDE THIS MACHINE?
Keith says THE LIQUID MIX GOES IN
THE BACK OF THE MACHINE
WHERE IT'S PUT INTO
A BARREL THAT HAS BLADES
WHICH MOVE AROUND.
AND THEY WHIP UP
THE ICE CREAM,
AND THEY SCRAPE THE FROZEN
PARTICLES OF ICE CREAM
OFF THE SIDE OF THE BARREL.
IT'S TURNING THE LIQUID MIX
INTO FROZEN ICE CREAM.
BUT IN THIS MACHINE,
IT GOES FURTHER ON
TO WHERE WE ADD THE INCLUSIONS.
HAVE YOU PICKED OUT
THE INCLUSIONS
THAT YOU WANNA ADD?
Mikaela says CARAMEL RIPPLE
AND CHOCOLATE COOKIE OF COURSE!
Keith says OKAY, WELL,
HERE'S SOME CARAMEL RIPPLE.
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO
IS POUR IT INTO THE FUNNEL
AND IT'LL GO THROUGH
THE RIPPLE PUMP.
Mikaela says OKAY.
As she pours the caramel into a large metal funnel, she says SWEET, SWEET CARAMEL.
Keith says SO NOW WE HAVE
TO ADD THE COOKIES.
Mikaela says GOOD LUCK, MY FRIENDS.
AND, ONE FOR MIKAELA.
Keith says NOW, WE JUST HAVE TO WAIT
FOR THE ICE CREAM
TO START COMING OUT.
Mikaela says COME ON, ICE CREAM!
COME ON!
HERE IT COMES!
THAT DOESN'T LOOK
LIKE ICE CREAM.
Keith says OH, WE JUST HAVE TO WAIT
A FEW MORE MINUTES.
Mikaela says NOW, IT'S ICE CREAM.
ALL RIGHT, ENOUGH WAITING.
I HAVE TO TASTE MY CREATION NOW.
Keith says OKAY, LET'S GET
A CONTAINER TO FILL IT IN.
Mikaela says OH, YEAH!
Keith says THIS IS THE BEST PART OF MY JOB.
TASTE IT.
As she tastes the new ice cream, Mikaela says MMMM!
Keith says OH, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO CALL IT?
Mikaela says HM, I'VE BEEN
THINKING ABOUT THIS ALL DAY.
I'M GONNA CALL IT
OOEY GOOEY MARSHMALLOW.
She points and says HEY, WHAT IS THAT?
As Keith turns around she escapes with the tub of ice cream.
Back in her studio, she says ICE CREAM IS THE BEST,
BUT I THINK I'VE GONE TOO FAR.
I GUESS THERE IS TOO MUCH
OF A GOOD THING.
BUT AS A FOOD TECHNICIAN
AT AN ICE CREAM PLANT,
I COULD JUST INVENT
A NEW FLAVOUR, AND ANOTHER,
AND ANOTHER.
WORKING AT AN ICE CREAM LAB
SOUNDS LIKE THE JOB FOR ME.
UNLESS I PICK
A NEW JOB NEXT TIME.
BUT IF I DO BECOME
AN ICE CREAM MAKER,
I WILL MAKE SURE TO PACE MYSELF.
WHEN I GROW UP.
The end credits roll.
Back to Arianna's room, she says
DO YOU SEE HOW MIKAELA WAS
TESTING THE PRODUCT AS SHE WENT?
SHE WANTED TO MAKE SURE
THAT IN THE END
SHE ENDED UP WITH THE BEST
TASTING ICE CREAM POSSIBLE.
IT'S IMPORTANT.
YOU'VE GOTTA TEST IT OUT
AND SEE IF PEOPLE LIKE IT.
IMAGINE IT WAS LIKE BROCCOLI
ICE CREAM LIKE SHE SAID,
OR MAYBE EVEN
BRUSSELS SPROUT ICE CREAM.
YUCK!
LITTLE TESTS ALONG THE WAY
HELP US TO MAKE SURE
THAT WHAT WE'RE CREATING IS
ACTUALLY VALUABLE AND NEEDED.
SO, NOW THAT YOU'VE GOT
YOUR STORYBOARD FINISHED,
IT'S TIME TO PROTOTYPE.
YOU CAN FIND MATERIALS AROUND
THE HOUSE AND START BUILDING.
OR YOU CAN CHECK IN
WITH AN ADULT
TO SEE IF THEY CAN HELP YOU
AS YOU'RE GONNA START
TO USE MAYBE AN ONLINE TOOL
TO START CREATING
YOUR APP OR YOUR WEBSITE.
FOR ME, I'M GOING TO KEEP
DRAWING AWAY SOME OF MY SCREENS
SO THAT I'M ABLE
TO PUT THEM TOGETHER.
AND THEN
I MIGHT USE AN ONLINE TOOL
TO HELP ME TO GET A PROTOTYPE
TO TEST WITH MY USERS.
REMEMBER THAT FEEDBACK
IS IMPORTANT.
IT'S ALWAYS GOOD
TO GET SOME ADVICE IN ORDER
TO MAKE YOUR IDEAS EVEN BETTER.
I WANT YOU TO CHECK OUT THIS
EPISODE OF
THE TRENDERS.
THEY GO THROUGH A SIMILAR
PROCESS THAT WE'VE GONE THROUGH
AND THEY HIGHLIGHT THE FACT
THAT FEEDBACK IS SO IMPORTANT.
YOU'VE GOTTA LISTEN
TO YOUR USERS.
LET'S WATCH.
In a colourful set, Adam sits on a stool.
Adam is in his twenties, with short brown hair and a goatee. He wears a gray suit, a brown hat and an orange scarf.
He says I'M ADAM, FASHION ICON
AND POP CULTURE SUPERSTAR.
On another corner of the studio, Amy works on a computer.
She is in her twenties and has shoulder length half black, half white hair with bangs. She wears a red dress, bracelets and high heels.
She says AND I'M AMY, COMPUTER
GENIUS AND SOCIAL MEDIA GURU.
Adam says TOGETHER WE TURN CRAZY IDEAS
INTO THE LATEST, HOTTEST TRENDS.
AS the logo of the show appears, Amy says WE ARE
They both say TRENDERS INC.
Eureka pops up. He?s in his twenties, with short straight brown hair in a centre part and he wears glasses, cargo trousers, a striped white and green polo shirt and a brown cardigan.
He says AND I'M EUREKA.
Adam says TODAY, OUR RESIDENT INVENTOR,
EUREKA IS BACK AGAIN
TO PITCH US
A NEW FASHION ACCESSORY.
OOH, AND I LOVE FASHION TRENDS.
Amy says HE DOES.
Eureka says HELLO, TRENDERS.
TODAY I BRING YOU TOWEL BELT.
ARE YOUR HANDS CLAMMY?
ARE THERE NO PAPER TOWELS
IN THE BATHROOM?
WELL, WITH TOWEL BELT, YOU'LL
ALWAYS HAVE A TOWEL WITH YOU.
(LAUGHING)
Adam says WHOA!
FASHION ACCESSORIES
THAT ARE ALSO PRACTICAL?
(MAKING TRAIN NOISES)
Amy says BUT WHY WOULD I WANNA
LOOK LIKE A FOOTBALL PLAYER?
OKAY, SO YOUR IDEA IS A-MA-ZING.
BUT, IT'S NEVER GONNA TREND.
Adam says NOT IN ITS CURRENT FORM.
Eureka says WHAT CAN WE DO TO FIX IT?
Adam says WELL, WE CAN TAKE IT
TO THE REPAIR LAB.
(music plays)
Adam and Amy go down a tube slide and appear in the lab wearing blue coats.
Amy says HERE WE ARE IN THE REPAIR LAB
WHERE WE USE THE REPAIR METHOD
TO SOLVE OUR TRENDING PROBLEMS.
Adam says LET'S DO THIS.
RECOGNIZE THE PROBLEM.
EXPLORE SOME SOLUTIONS.
Amy says MY RESEARCH SHOWS
PEOPLE LIKE BATHROBES.
Adam says PLAN THE EXECUTION.
Amy says WE'RE GOING TO MAKE THE OUTFIT
OUT OF TOWEL MATERIAL.
Adam says ATTEMPT A PROTOTYPE.
SOUNDS LIKE IT'S TIME
FOR A TRENDERS TRANSFORMATION.
WE TOOK EUREKA'S TOWEL CONCEPT
AND REDESIGNED IT
AS A STYLISH JACKET.
Amy says IT'S TIME TO
IMPROVE WITH FEEDBACK.
IT'S TIME TO...
BOTH say TAKE IT TO THE STREETS.
As Amy interviews two girls on a sidewalk, one says LIKE, IF YOU WERE
TO RUB YOUR DIRTY HANDS ON IT,
IT WOULD GET REALLY MESSY.
As Adam interviews a boy and a girl, the boy says PLEASE, I'D LIKE THIS
TO HAVE A LITTLE MORE COLOUR,
LIKE DIFFERENT COLOURS
FOR BOYS AND GIRLS.
(SNIFFLING)
Back in the lab Amy says I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT
OUR TOWEL JACKET WAS A FLOP!
Adam says BUT WE CAN'T JUST
THROW IN THE TOWEL.
Amy says NO, THAT'S NOT US.
Adam says IT'S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT
IF OUR SOLUTION DOESN'T WORK,
WE CAN LOOP BACK TO PLAN AND
TRY AGAIN WITH A DIFFERENT IDEA.
SO WE SWITCHED TO PANTS.
As Adam interviews a boy, the boy says
I LIKE THE IDEA, IT'S JUST
I FEEL LIKE THERE SHOULD BE
A DIFFERENT WAY TO DO IT.
Adam says THE PANTS WERE A HIT, BUT
NEEDED TO BE MORE FASHIONABLE.
WE'VE MADE OUR IMPROVEMENTS
AND NOW IT'S TIME TO
REVEAL TO EVERYONE
OH-OH-OHHHH
Amy says EUREKA, LET US PRESENT TO YOU
TOWEL PANTS.
CLAMMY HANDS?
Adam says TOWEL PANTS.
Amy says JUST DRY ON YOUR THIGHS.
TOWEL PANTS HAS YOU COVERED.
(GASPING)
Eureka says I LOVE THEM.
I WANT SOME.
Amy says YOU GUYS, TOWEL PANTS
JUST GOT 15,000 NEW LIKES.
(GASPING)
Adam says AND OUR POPULARITY GRAPH SHOWS
TOWEL PANTS ARE OFFICIALLY
The three say TRENDING!
Eureka says WHEE!
(GIGGLING)
A spinning logo reads "Trenders Inc."
Back to Arianna, she says OKAY, THAT EPISODE
WAS A LITTLE BIT SILLY,
BUT IT HELPED ME TO UNDERSTAND
THE IMPORTANCE OF FEEDBACK.
SEE HOW AMY AND ADAM WENT OUT
AND THEY
ACTUALLY SPOKE TO PEOPLE?
THAT'S WHAT YOU'VE GOTTA DO.
YOU'VE GOTTA THINK ABOUT A WAY
THAT YOU CAN CONNECT
WITH YOUR USERS
AND IT CAN EITHER BE
BY PICKING UP THE PHONE
AND GIVING THEM A CALL,
OR SOMETIMES YOU CAN TRY
AND DO AN ONLINE SURVEY.
I KNOW IT'S HARD
DURING THESE TIMES,
BUT LISTENING TO YOUR USERS
IS A GREAT WAY TO BE ABLE
TO GET SOME FEEDBACK
AND KNOW WHETHER OR NOT
YOUR SOLUTION IS GONNA WORK.
THEY MIGHT EVEN HAVE
SOME OTHER IDEAS
THAT MIGHT HELP YOU
ALONG THE WAY.
SO, THAT'S PART THREE
OF OUR PASSION PROJECTS.
NOW, YOU'RE COMING EVEN CLOSER
TO BECOMING DESIGNERS,
WHICH IS FANTASTIC.
TODAY YOU LEARNED
HOW TO CREATE STORYBOARDS
AND YOU ACTUALLY TOOK
THE TIME TO CREATE ONE WITH ME.
REMEMBER THAT
YOUR NEXT STEP IS PROTOTYPING.
SO EITHER TAKE SOME MATERIALS
FROM HOME AND START BUILDING,
OR MAYBE DRAW SOME EXTRA SCREENS
IN ORDER TO BE ABLE
TO FIGURE OUT WHAT YOUR APP
OR WEBSITE
MIGHT ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE.
REMEMBER TO ASK
FOR SOME FEEDBACK.
IF YOU'VE GOT USERS
AROUND YOU, GO OUT AND ASK THEM.
TELL THEM WHAT YOU'RE THINKING,
SO THAT YOU CAN HAVE THE CHANCE
TO BE ABLE TO LISTEN TO THEM
AND SEE WHAT THEIR THOUGHTS ARE.
CREATE A PROTOTYPE.
GET IT IN THE HANDS
OF YOUR USERS.
THAT'S REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT.
SO, LIKE AMY AND ADAM SAID,
WE CAN ALWAYS GO BACK
TO THE PLANNING STAGES
IF WE FIND THAT SOMETHING
ISN'T WORKING OUT.
IT'S OKAY.
WE'LL CREATE A NEW ITERATION.
SO, THANK YOU SO MUCH
FOR SPENDING YET ANOTHER
POWER HOUR OF LEARNING
WITH ME.
I SUPER APPRECIATE IT.
AND I HAD A LOT OF FUN
STORYBOARDING WITH YOU TODAY.
SO, I WANT YOU TO CONTINUE
TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY,
JUST HAVE FUN.
BYE!
A slate reads "Today's junior lesson: Bonus material."
A blond girl with pigtails pops up and says HI, I'M EVE.
IF I COULD BE ANYTHING,
I'D BE A PHOTOGRAPHER.
Fast clips show children playing, wearing costumes, learning and having fun as a song plays that says
IMAGINE, IMAGINE, IMAGINE
IMAGINE POWERFUL
IMAGINE COLOURFUL
IMAGINE MAGICAL
CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT?
Eve appears and says
HI, I'M EVE.
IF I COULD BE ANYTHING,
I'D BE A PHOTOGRAPHER.
A PHOTOGRAPHER TAKES PICTURES.
As clips show her taking pictures with a large pink and purple camera, she says
MY CAMERA WOULD BE
WHITE, PINK, AND PURPLE.
I WOULD WALK AROUND
AND TAKE PICTURES OF THINGS
THAT I FIND INTERESTING.
CLICK.
I'D PLACE MY CAMERA
ON A TRIPOD.
IT'S A STAND TO KEEP
MY CAMERA NICE AND STILL.
THEN CLICK.
Drawings of the pictures she pretends to take pop up.
She says SELFIE!
I'D TAKE PHOTOS
OF BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPES
WITH TREES AND A LAKE.
AND A...
A SEA MONSTER?
SEA MONSTERS ARE PRETTY COOL.
SO I WOULD TAKE
LOTS OF PICTURES
TO SHOW THE WHOLE WORLD.
Drawings show a sea monster and marine life.
Eve says SOMETIMES I WOULD
TAKE UNDERWATER PICTURES
FOR NATURE WEBSITES.
THE WEBSITE
WOULD WANT ME TO TAKE A PHOTO
OF ALL
THE DIFFERENT LIFE UNDERWATER.
SELFIE!
I WOULD ALSO TAKE PHOTOS
FOR THE NEWSPAPER.
MY DAD WOULD JUMP UP
AND DOWN ALL EXCITED
WHENEVER MY PHOTOS
ARE ON THE FRONT PAGE.
(GIGGLING)
SOMETIMES I WOULD
TAKE PICTURES OF ME.
LOOK AT MY SELFIE.
CHEESE.
SELFIE!
SMILE.
AS A PHOTOGRAPHER, I WOULD
TAKE PHOTOS IN MY OWN STUDIO.
(MEOWING)
PEOPLE WOULD HIRE ME
TO TAKE PHOTOS OF THEIR PETS:
DOGS AND CATS.
SOMETIMES THE ANIMALS
WOULD MAKE FUNNY FACES.
SMILE.
I WOULD ALSO BE HIRED
TO TAKE SCHOOL PHOTOS.
I WOULD ADJUST MY LIGHTS TO
MAKE EVERYONE LOOK THEIR BEST.
CHEESE!
NOW, LOOK TO YOUR RIGHT.
(BLOWING RASPBERRIES)
THAT'S FUNNY!
I WOULD SELECT
MY FAVOURITE PHOTOS
AND DISPLAY THEM
IN MY OWN GALLERY.
PEOPLE WOULD COME
FROM ALL OVER TO SEE THEM.
BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER
WOULD BE GREAT.
SELFIE!
As fast clips show Eve taking pictures, and drawings shown before, the song plays and says
CAN YOU IMAGINE BEING
ANYTHING YOU WANT TO BE?
CAN YOU IMAGINE THERE'S
A WORLD FULL OF FANTASY?
AND IF YOU THINK
ABOUT IT LOTS
IT BECOMES SO REAL
DID YOU KNOW?
DID YOU KNOW?
DID YOU KNOW?
THAT YOU CAN DO ANYTHING
YOU WANT TO DO
IMAGINE THIS OR THAT
THINK OF SOMETHING NEW
AND YOU CAN ALWAYS
CHANGE A THING OR TWO
ANYTHING YOU WANT,
IT'S REALLY UP TO YOU
BA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BADA-BADA
BA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BADA-BADA
BA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BADA-BADA
BA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BADA-BADA
BA-BADA-BADA
BA-BADA-BADA
CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT?
I'M EVE AND I'M A PHOTOGRAPHER.
IMAGINE THAT!
End credits roll.
