Miss Kylie says, THIS MASH UP IS GOING TO BE
SO COOL.
I LOVE EXPERIMENTING WITH OLDER
STYLES OF DANCE,
AND BHARATANATYAM IS ONE OF
THE OLDEST IN INDIA.

Miss Kylie stands with Grayson and Aria to her right and girl Jordan and Roman to her left.

Girl Jordan asks, WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

Miss Kylie says, IT COMBINES A LOT OF INTRICATE
HAND MOVEMENTS,
A TON OF FAST FOOTWORK,
AND IT REALLY FOCUSES ON RHYTHM.

Grayson says, THAT ACTUALLY SOUNDS A LOT
LIKE HIP HOP.

Miss Kylie says,  THAT'S WHY I GOT SO EXCITED
TO SEE A MASH UP
WITH TWO DIFFERENT
CULTURAL DANCES.
LET'S BEGIN WITH BHARATANATYAM.

Miss Kylie comments, I LEARNED BHARATANATYAM
FROM MY FRIEND.

Text reads, Miss Kylie, dance instructor.

Miss Kylie comments, SHE'S IN A DANCE GROUP AND HAS
BEEN DOING IT FOR A WHILE,
AND SHE RECENTLY TAUGHT ME,
AND I WANTED TO TEACH IT
TO THE CLASS.

In the studio,  Miss Kylie says, THE ARMS ARE CALLED NATYARAMBHA.
HOLD OUT YOUR ARMS,
REALLY RAISING YOUR ELBOWS UP.

Grayson, Aria, Miss Kylie and Jordan raise their elbows up high. Roman raises his elbows and his shoulders.

Miss Kylie says, YOUR ELBOWS, NOT YOUR SHOULDERS.

Roman relaxes his shoulders.

Miss Kylie says, NOW FLEX YOUR FINGERS SUPER HARD
SO THAT THEY CURVE UP
TO THE SKY.

Miss Kylie demonstrates curving her hands with her fingers curving upwards.

She says, WE CAN PUT OUR
HANDS TOGETHER…

Miss Kylie and the kids put their palms together.

Miss Kylie says, …AND TRY TO
SPREAD OUR FINGERS APART.

Miss Kylie demonstrates putting her hands together and separating her fingers but curving them upwards.

Aria says, IT DOESN'T WORK FOR ME,
MISS KYLIE.

Miss Kylie says, PUT YOUR HANDS TOGETHER
LIKE THIS…

Miss Kylie puts her palms together. Text reads, Bharatanatyam originated in South India.

She says, …AND PUSH OUT YOUR FINGERS…

Miss Kylie curves her fingers back from her hands.

She says, …AND THEN PUT IT BACK.

With her fingers curved, she raises her arms so they’re level with her shoulders. Arid does it.

Miss  Kylie says, THERE WE GO, ARIA.

Miss Kylie looks at the other kids.

She says, NOW TILT YOUR WAIST FORWARD.

She checks the kids' stance.

Miss Kylie says, NICE.
THE FEET ARE IN ARAMANDI
POSITION,
SO THEY'RE GOING TO BE A BIT…
OUR HEELS DON'T TOUCH,
AND OUR TOES POINT OUT
AS WIDE AS THEY CAN GO.

The kids adjust their feet with their heels close, but not touching and their toes pointed outwards like first position of ballet.

Miss Kylie says, NOW BEND YOUR KNEES LIKE THIS,
AND THE ARAMANDI IS COMPLETE.

The kids copy Miss Kylie’s armandi.

Miss Kylie says, IF WE'RE GOING TO TRY OUT
A CULTURAL DANCE,
WE REALLY WANT TO MAKE SURE WE
GET THE POSITION RIGHT.

Aria says, IT'S LIKE FIRST POSITION
IN BALLET.

Miss  Kylie says, THAT'S RIGHT,
BUT BHARATANATYAM IS LIKE,
2,000 YEARS OLDER THAN BALLET,
SO WE SHOULD SAY FIRST POSITION
LOOKS LIKE ARAMANDI.

Grayson comments, I WOULD CALL A BHARATANATYAM HIP
HOP MASH UP
BAH... HIP-TANATYAM.

Text reads, Grayson, dancer.

In the studio, Miss Kylie says, OUR STEPS WILL BE PRETTY SIMPLE
FROM HERE.
WE'RE GOING TO PICK UP OUR LEG…

Bend right leg to the back. Miss Kylie and the kids lift and bend their right leg.

Miss Kylie says, …AND PUT IT OUT…

 Forward heel to floor.

Miss Kylie and the kids straighten their legs and put forward heel to floor.

 Miss Kylie says, …AND UP…

Her and the kids raise their legs up while bent.

Miss Kylie says, …AND BRING IT IN.

Miss Kylie and the kids lower their feet back to aramandi.

Text reads, Bharatanatyam tells stories through dance.

Miss Kylie says, SO WE WENT UP…

Miss Kylie lowers her heel to floor.

Miss Kylie says, …AND OUT,
UP AND DOWN, LET'S TRY IT
ON THE OTHER SIDE.
WE GO UP…

The motions are repeated.
Miss Kylie says, …OUT,
UP, IN.
UP, OUT, UP, IN.
UP, OUT, UP, IN.
NOW WHEN OUR HEEL TOUCHES
THE GROUND,
WE'RE GOING TO BE
FLIPPING OUR HAND.

Miss Kylie demonstrates flipping her hand so her palm is facing up with her fingers still curved.

She says, AND BACK IN.
HEEL. BACK IN, HEEL.

Hands correspond with the feet from side to side.

Miss Kylie says, BACK IN, HEEL.
BACK IN.
VERY GOOD.

Miss Kylie comments, THE DANCERS WERE A BIT NERVOUS
AT FIRST
BUT THEN THEY REALLY STARTED TO
PICK UP THE DANCE.

Text reads, Miss Kylie, dance instructor.

In the studio, Miss Kylie says, I THINK WE'RE READY TO MOVE ONTO
THE HIP HOP SECTION.

The kids cheer.

Miss Kylie says, WE'RE GOING TO START OFF BY
PUTTING ALL OUR WEIGHT
INTO THIS FOOT…

The right foot.

Miss Kylie says, …AND WE'RE GONNA
PUT OUR HEEL UP.

The foot is raised with heel pointing down. Jordan and Roman’s toes point upwards with their heels on the floor.

She says, OUR FOOT GOES UP, YEAH.
SO ALL OUR WEIGHT IS ON
THIS FOOT.

Aria and Roman copy Miss Kylie.

Miss Kylie says, THEN WE GO STEP, STEP.

Miss Kylie and the kids take a step with each foot so they’re together.

Miss Kylie says, THEN WE DO TWO BOUNCES.
WE'RE GONNA GO BOUNCE, BOUNCE.

The kids copy Miss Kylie’s demonstration of bouncing without her feet leaving the floor. She keeps her hands on her thighs and knees bent.

Miss Kylie says, LET'S TRY THAT AGAIN.
SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT,
WE GO HEEL…

Miss Kylie and the kids lean onto their left feet.

Miss Kylie says, …THEN WE GO STEP, STEP,
AND TWO BOUNCES.

Miss Kylie and the kids practice the bounce .

Miss Kylie says, BOUNCE, BOUNCE.
WANT TO TRY THAT AGAIN?
WE GO BACK, AND AS WE GO BACK,
WE'RE GOING TO PULL DOWN.
LIKE WE'RE PULLING SOMETHING
DOWN.

The kids practice the pull.

Miss Kylie says, EXACTLY.
LET'S TRY IT TOGETHER.
ONE, TWO…

Miss Kylie and the kids start with their forearms pointed up then lean down into the bounce position.

Miss Kylie counts, …THREE, FOUR.

Miss Kylie and the kids practice the step and bounce.

Miss Kylie says, HEEL, STEP, BOUNCE, BOUNCE.
HEEL, STEP, BOUNCE, BOUNCE.
FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT.

Jordan comments, HIP HOP IS A LOT OF FUN
BECAUSE YOU GET TO GROOVE,
AND YOU CAN, LIKE, DO SPINS…

In the studio, Jordan does a spin.

Jordan comments, …AND YOUR IMAGINATION.

Text reads, Jordan, dancer.

In the studio, Miss Kylie says, GREAT WORK, DANCERS.
NOW LET'S DO THE BHARATANATYAM
WITH THE HIP HOP.
DO YOU REMEMBER HOW WE START?

The kids say, YEAH!

Miss Kylie says, SHOW ME.

The kids get in their starting position. They raise their arms and curve their hands. They combine moves.

Miss Kylie says, AWESOME, DANCERS.
 LET'S TRY IT ALL TOGETHER.
WE GO ONE, TWO…

As Miss Kylie counts she flips her curved hand.

She counts, …THREE, FOUR,
FIVE, SIX, SEVEN…

Aria smiles as she practices the moves.

Miss Kylie says, …HIP HOP.

Miss Kylie and the kids switch into their starting position for their hip hop routine.

Kylie counts, ONE, TWO, BOUNCE, BOUNCE.
THREE, FOUR, BOUNCE, BOUNCE.
I THINK WE'RE IN GREAT SHAPE
FOR OUR FINALE.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?

Aria raises her hand.

Miss Kylie says, YES?

Aria asks, WHEN WE DO THE "PULL" THING,
BOUNCE, BOUNCE,
DO WE GO ON OUR TIPPY-TOE?

Miss Kylie explains, WE'RE GOING TO BE ON FLAT FOOT,
SO WE GO FLAT FOOT…

Miss Kylie stands on her left foot while kicking out her right foot.

She says, …AND THEN STEP, STEP
ON FLAT FOOT,
AND THEN BOUNCE, BOUNCE.

Miss Kylie steps onto her right foot and brings her left to her right.

Grayson comments, MY FAVOURITE HIP HOP MOVE IS
THE KICK BALL CHANGE.

In the studio, Roman asks, HOW MANY OF THE BHARATANATYAM DO
WE DO BEFORE THE HIP HOP?

Miss Kylie says, LET'S COUNT TOGETHER.

Roman and Joran stand in the Bharatanatyam starting position.

Miss Kylie counts, ONE, TWO,
THREE, FOUR.

The kids practice flipping their curved hands over and under as they put their feet out onto their heels.

Grayson says, IT KINDA LOOKS LIKE WE'RE
SERVING PIZZA.

Miss Kylie says, IT DOES. LET'S SERVE THE PIZZA
ALL TOGETHER.

Miss Kylie and the kids get in their starting position.

Miss Kylie says, WE GO SERVE...

Miss Kylie and the kids put their right heel out and flip their right palm over.

Miss Kylie says, …THE PIZZA.

She and the kids bring their feet back and flip their palms back over.

Miss Kylie says, SERVE... THE PIZZA.

They practice the move with the other foot.

Miss Kylie says, SERVE THE PIZZA.
SERVE... THE PIZZA.

Jordan comments, I LIKE PIZZA BECAUSE IT'S TASTY
BUT I CAN'T EAT IT EVERY DAY.

Grayson comments, THE ONLY THING I LIKE ON
MY PIZZA IS CHEESE.

In the studio, Miss Kylie says, I THINK WE'RE READY
FOR OUR FINALE,
BUT FIRST, LET'S SHAKE OUT OUR
JITTERS WITH SOME...

The kids cheer, FREESTYLE FUN!

Title card, Freestyle Fun!

(Upbeat music plays)

Miss Kylie and the kids dance freestyle. Grayson spins. Roman moves his arms like waves. Aria does a cartwheel. Miss Kylie and the kids stand together.

Miss Kylie says, THE MOMENT HAS ARRIVED.
IT'S ALMOST TIME TO PERFORM OUR
BHARATANATYAM HIP HOP MASH UP.
LET'S CLOSE OUR EYES
AND OPEN THEM
IN FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT.

The dance studio transforms into a neon tunnel lit with blue and pink lights.

Miss Kylie narrates, IT'S THE PERFECT VIBE
FOR OUR BHAR-HOP DANCE.

(Female singers vocalize)

The dancers perform the routine. They wear traditional Indian and hip hop costumes.

Miss Kylie narrates, IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU'VE
NEVER DANCED BEFORE.
JUST TAKE IT STEP BY STEP.
SEE YOU NEXT TIME!
