Transcript: Can Trees Talk?
(Upbeat music playing)
Animated aliens are in a spaceship. Live-action children smile and wave.
Singing, BLYNK AND AAZOO, I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU.
Title: Blynk & Aazoo. Ask, Explore, Discover!
Blynk, a spiky-haired green alien, looks at drooping Venus-flytrap type plant in a pot on a desk.
(Blynk noises)
Blynk dashes off and returns with a watering can. The plant straightens up and brightens as it gets the water. Blynk walks away.
(Aazoo noises)
Aazoo, a tall red alien with three eyes, walks over to the plant. Aazoo offers the plant a lollipop. The plant bits the lollipop and Aazoo’s hand.
(Aazoo shrieks)
Aazoo pulls their hand free. The plant swallows the lollipop.
(Alarm)
M.A.V.I.S. says, INQUIRY BOOTH TRANSMITTING. INCOMING INQUIRY.
Blynk and Aazoo run over to two screens. A live-action child with long black hair appears on one screen.
The black-haired child says, HI, BLYNK AND AAZOO. I'M ANVITHA. AND I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU.
(Blynk and Aazoo noises)
Blynk and Aazoo wave.
Anvitha says, SOMEONE TOLD ME THAT TREES COULD TALK, BUT THAT'S NOT TRUE. IS IT?
(Both babbling)
Blynk and Aazoo shrug.
M.A.V.I.S. says, APPARENTLY NO ANSWERS HAVE TAKEN ROOT.
(Anvitha laughs)
M.A.V.I.S. says, INTERSTELLAR SCIENCE COUNSEL CALLING, CAPTAIN.
An adult with long blonde hair appears on the other screen.
The blonde-haired person says, HI, ANVITHA, I'M JESSIE. I HEARD YOUR GREAT QUESTION. TREES MIGHT NOT SPEAK OUR LANGUAGE, BUT THEY CAN ACTUALLY COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER. BLYNK, TREE FILES, PLEASE. SUBCATEGORY, TIMBER TALK. TREES, BEAUTIFUL ABOVE AND SUPER INTERESTING BELOW.
A video shows people walking past tall trees.
M.A.V.I.S. says, HERE IS AN UNDERGROUND VIEW OF A FOREST FLOOR.
An animation shows tree roots growing undergrown.
Anvitha says, WHOA, LOOK AT ALL THOSE ROOTS!
Jessie says, AND FUNGI.
Anvitha asks, FUNGI? ISN'T THAT LIKE A MUSHROOM?
Jessie says, EXACTLY! UNDERGROUND, THESE FUNGI AND THE ROOTS OF TREES TEND TO GROW CLOSE TOGETHER BECAUSE THEY SHARE WATER AND NUTRIENTS WITH EACH OTHER.
M.A.V.I.S. says, THIS IS KNOWN AS A MYCORRHIZAL NETWORK.
Anvitha asks, MICRIL… WHAT WAS THAT?
Jessie says, PEOPLE OFTEN CALL IT THE WOOD WIDE WEB.
Anvitha says, THAT'S WAY EASIER TO REMEMBER.
(Music playing)
Jessie says, THIS WOOD WIDE WEB IS HOW TREES TALK TO EACH OTHER WITHOUT USING WORDS.
Anvitha says, SO THEY DO TALK! BUT WHAT DO TREES HAVE TO TALK ABOUT?
Jessie says, WELL, IF IT DOESN'T RAIN FOR A LONG TIME, ONE TREE CAN SAY TO ANOTHER TREE, "HEY! I'M REALLY THIRSTY OVER HERE. CAN YOU SHARE SOME WATER AND NUTRIENTS?"
M.A.V.I.S. says, TREES MAY ALSO BE ATTACKED BY INSECTS LIKE SOME BEETLES OR CATERPILLARS.
A caterpillar eats a leaf.
Jessie says, AND IN THIS CASE, A TREE COULD SEND SIGNALS TO OTHER TREES SAYING, WATCH OUT FOR THE CATERPILLARS!
Anvitha asks, AND THE OTHER TREES WOULD UNDERSTAND?
Jessie says, YEP. WHEN THEY RECEIVE THAT UNDERGROUND MESSAGE, THEY CAN MAKE THEIR OWN LEAVES TASTE REALLY BAD SO THE CATERPILLARS DON'T WANNA EAT THEM.
Blynk and Aazoo say, OOH.
Anvitha asks, SO TREES CAN SEND SECRET MESSAGES UNDERGROUND? THAT'S SO COOL!
Jessie says, SOME TREES CAN ACTUALLY COMMUNICATE ABOVE GROUND TOO.
A video shows giraffes standing by trees.
Anvitha says, GIRAFFES! WOW, THEY LOOK HUNGRY.
Jessie says, GIRAFFES LOVE ACACIA TREE LEAVES. SO WHEN THEY START SNACKING, THE TREES EMIT A GASSY MESSAGE INTO THE AIR TO TELL OTHER TREES TO LOOK OUT.
M.A.V.I.S. says, THE OTHER TREES REACT BY GIVING THEIR LEAVES AN UNPLEASANT FLAVOR, WHICH STOPS THE GIRAFFES FROM EATING.
Anvitha says, SO HOW ABOUT FLOWERS THAT YOU CAN SMELL? ARE THEY TALKING TOO?
Jessie says, GOOD QUESTION. FLOWERS USE SMELL TO COMMUNICATE WITH POLLINATORS.
M.A.V.I.S. says, POLLEN NEEDS TO TRAVEL FROM ONE LINE TO ANOTHER TO FORM SEEDS. POLLINATORS ARE INSECTS AND ANIMALS THAT HELP MOVE THE FLOWER'S POLLEN.
Anvitha says, OH, LIKE BEES!
A bee lands on a daisy.
Jessie says, WHEN SOME PLANTS ARE READY TO BE POLLINATED, THEY ATTRACT POLLINATORS BY RELEASING A SIMILAR SCENT THAT BEES USE TO COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER.
Anvitha says, WOW. SO PLANTS CAN ACTUALLY COMMUNICATE IN BEE!
Aazoo hops over to the plant and hugs it.
(Plant grunts)
The plant emits cloud of green gas.
Jessie says, CAREFUL, AAZOO. THAT PLANT COULD BE CALLING FOR BACKUP.
Anvitha asks, PLANTS CAN DO THAT TOO?
Jessie says, YEP. PLANTS CAN RELEASE SMELLS WHEN THEY'RE IN TROUBLE. LIKE IF PART OF IT GETS CUT.
Anvitha says, IS THAT WHY GRASS SMELLS SO MUCH WHEN YOU CUT IT?
Jessie says, EXACTLY. AND OTHER PLANTS ALSO USE SMELLS TO CALL FOR HELP.
Anvitha asks, DO YOU MEAN?
Jessie says, BLYNK, THE INSECT DEFENDER FILES PLEASE.
Blynk taps a keyboard.
A large green caterpillar is on a plant.
M.A.V.I.S. says, MANDUCA SEXTA, OR TOBACCO HORNWORM, IS AN INSECT THAT EATS VARIOUS PLANTS INCLUDING TOBACCO, TOMATO, PEPPERS, AND EGGPLANTS.
Jessie says, THESE CATERPILLARS CAN REALLY CHOW DOWN.
M.A.V.I.S. says, AND WHEN THEY DO THE PLANT RELEASES A SCENT THAT ATTRACTS WASPS. THE WAS LIKE EGGS IN THE CATERPILLAR. AND WHEN THEY HATCH, THEY EAT THE CATERPILLAR.
(Aazoo and Blynk gasp)
Anvitha says, EW, THAT'S PRETTY GROSS! BUT COOL TOO. I NEVER THOUGHT PLANTS AND INSECTS COULD TALK TO EACH OTHER LIKE THAT.
Jessie says, IT'S AMAZING WHAT THEY CAN SAY WITHOUT WORDS.
Anvitha says, BUT PEOPLE CAN SAY A LOT WITHOUT WORDS, TOO, RIGHT?
Jessie nods and gives a thumbs up.
A video shows a child crying. Other people smile, laugh and gasp.
(People exclaiming)
M.A.V.I.S. says, THE HUMAN FACE HAS 43 MUSCLES THAT CAN MAKE MORE THAN 10,000 EXPRESSIONS THAT SHOW ALL THE EMOTIONS THAT HUMANS FEEL.
Jessie says, HEY MAVIS, GUESS WHAT I'M FEELING RIGHT NOW?
Jessie smiles.
M.A.V.I.S. says, I BELIEVE YOU NEED TO GO TO THE BATHROOM.
(Buzzer buzzes)
Jessie shakes her head.
Anvitha asks, HOW ABOUT ME?
Anvitha scrunches up her face in a scowl.
M.A.V.I.S. says, YOU ARE HAVING A GOOD TIME. YOU ARE OVERJOYED, PERHAPS BECAUSE I HAVE ANSWERED THESE CORRECTLY.
Anvitha says, I THINK YOU MIGHT NEED A LITTLE MORE PRACTICE, MAVIS.
M.A.V.I.S. says, COMPUTERS ARE NOT SO GOOD AT READING EMOTIONS.
Anvitha says, YOU'LL GET BETTER AT IT, JUST LIKE PLANTS LEARN HOW TO TALK TO INSECTS.
Blynk smiles.
(Blynk noises)
M.A.V.I.S. says, INSPIRATION DETECTED. INVENTION STATION IS READY, CAPTAIN.
(Electricity buzzes)
Blynk runs and pulls a lever.
(Electronic noises)
Water flows through tubes. Machinery moves.
Blynk runs back, holding a mechanical flower.
(Blynk and Aazoo noises)
Blynk puts the flower in the pot with the plant.
Anvitha asks, WHAT'S THAT, BLYNK?
M.A.V.I.S. says, IT APPEARS TO BE SOME SORT OF PLANT LANGUAGE TRANSLATOR.
(Animals noises)
Jessie says, THAT DOESN'T SOUND RIGHT, BLYNK.
Blynk adjusts a dial on the mechanical flower.
(Woman singing at a high pitch)
Jessie and Anvitha cover their ears.
(Glass shatters)
M.A.V.I.S. says, INVENTION REPORT. PLANT TRANSLATOR UNSUCCESSFUL. INDOOR FIREWORKS DISPLAY, SUCCESSFUL.
Animated fireworks pop around the spaceship.
Jessie says, BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME, BLYNK.
Anvitha says, MAYBE WHEN I GROW UP, I'LL FIGURE OUT A WAY FOR PLANTS AND HUMANS TO TEACH OTHER!
Jessie says, WELL, WE'LL ALL BE ROOTING FOR YOU.
Anvitha says, THANKS, EVERYONE. BYE NOW!
Everyone waves.
M.A.V.I.S says, THE QUEST FOR ANSWERS CONTINUES. ALL SYSTEMS ENGAGED.
