Transcript: Why Do Cats Purr?
(Upbeat music)
Animated aliens move around a spaceship. Real-life children wave from screens.
Singing, BLYNK AND AAZOO I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU
A title reads: Blynk & Aazoo. Ask, Explore, Discover!
A diamond-shaped spaceship floats above a blue planet.
(Music playing)
Blynk, a spiky-haired green alien, sets a plate with a piece of cheese on it on the floor by a hole in the wall.
(Mouse squeaks)
A purple mouse steps out of the hole and sniffs the cheese. The mouse picks up the cheese.
The mouse says, HA, HA, HA, HA.
Blynk presses a button on a remote control and a cage drops over the mouse.
The mouse says, OH, AH
(Blynk laughs)
(Mouse laughs)
The mouse takes out a remote control and presses a button. The cage disappears and a larger cage drops on Blynk.
Blynk cries, UGH!
(Mouse nibbles)
The mouse takes the cheese and runs back into the hole.
M.A.V.I.S says, MICE TRY BLYNK. CHEDDAR LUCK NEXT TIME, HA HA.
Aazoo walks over and lifts the cage off Blynk. Aazoo is a tall orange alien with three eyes.
(Happy noises)
(Horn blasts)
M.A.V.I.S says, INQUIRY BOOTH TRANSMITTING, INCOMING INQUIRY.
(Happy noises)
Blynk and Aazoo run to a room with two large screens. One screen shows a child with black hair in two pigtails.
The black-haired child says, HI, BLYNK AND AAZOO, IT'S ME, NAGASHRI. MY QUESTION IS, WHY DO CATS PURR?
M.A.V.I.S says, AWESOME ANSWER POTENTIAL HIGH. IT APPEARS THAT BLYNK AND AAZOO WERE UNABLE TO LET THAT CAT OUT OF THE BAG. GET IT?
(High pitched groans)
M.A.V.I.S says, INTERSTELLAR SCIENCE COUNCIL CALLING, CAPTAIN.
A person with black hair in small braids appears on the other screen.
Text reads, Eugenia, Scientist
Eugenia says, HEY EVERYONE, EUGENIA HERE. SO WHY DO CATS PURR? LET'S FIND OUT. BLYNK, ANIMAL FILES PLEASE. SUBCATEGORY, THE SOUND OF PURR-CUSSION. LET'S START WITH HOW CATS PURR.
A video of a person holding a cat appears.
M.A.V.I.S says, MOST SCIENTISTS BELIEVE CATS PURR WHEN THEIR BRAIN SENDS A SIGNAL TO THE VOICE BOX MUSCLES TO VIBRATE. WHEN THE CAT BREATHES, THE AIR FLOWS THROUGH THE SPACES BETWEEN THE MUSCLES AND OVER THE SMALL TWIG LIKE HYOID BONES, AND THIS PRODUCES THE PURRING SOUND.
(Purring)
Eugenia says, WHAT'S SUPER INTERESTING IS THAT CATS CAN PURR WHEN THEY BREATHE IN AND OUT.
Nagashri asks, OH, IS THAT WHY PURRING JUST KEEPS GOING?
Eugenia says, YOU GOT IT.
Nagashri asks, SO DO CATS ONLY PURR WHEN THEY'RE HAPPY?
Eugenia says, WELL, YES AND NO. CATS OFTEN PURR WHEN THEY'RE HAPPY, BUT WE'VE ALSO DISCOVERED THAT CATS SOMETIMES PURR WHEN THEY'RE HUNGRY, FRIGHTENED, OR INJURED.
Nagashri asks, WHY WOULD THEY PURR WHEN THEY'RE SAD?
Eugenia says, RESEARCH SHOWS THAT PURRING CAN BE SOOTHING FOR CATS.
Nagashri says, REALLY?
M.A.V.I.S says, SOME VETERINARIANS HAVE EVEN OBSERVED CATS LYING ALONGSIDE EACH OTHER, AND PURRING WHEN ONE IS INJURED. A BEHAVIOUR CALLED PURR THERAPY. THEY THINK IT MIGHT HAVE A CALMING EFFECT.
(Aazoo yawns)
Aazoo nods off and falls over. Blynk catches Aazoo. Aazoo jumps up and Blynk steps on Aazoo’s foot.
(Aazoo shrieks)
Nagashri asks, ARE YOU OK AAZOO?
Aazoo nods.
(Nagashri sighs)
Eugenia says, SPEAKING OF INJURIES, PURR THERAPY MAY ACTUALLY HELP CATS TO HEAL.
Nagashri says, WHOA, HOW?
Eugenia says, SOUND IS MADE UP OF VIBRATIONS OR SOUND WAVES THAT WE HEAR. DIFFERENT SOUNDS THOUGH, VIBRATE AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS.
M.A.V.I.S says, THE NUMBER OF THESE VIBRATIONS IN ONE SECOND IS MEASURED IN HERTZ.
Aazoo points to their foot.
M.A.V.I.S says, IT IS A DIFFERENT SOURCE OF HURTS, AAZOO.
(Nagashri laughs)
Eugenia says, SCIENTISTS HAVE DISCOVERED THAT WHEN CATS PURR, THE SPEED OR NUMBER OF HERTZ OF THOSE VIBRATIONS CAN ACTUALLY HELP BONE GROWTH, AND THE HEALING OF BROKEN BONES.
Nagashri asks, SO CATS CAN ACTUALLY HEAL THEMSELVES BY PURRING?
Eugenia says, SOME SCIENTISTS THINK SO. SIMILAR TO HOW PHYSICAL EXERCISE CAN HELP STRENGTHEN OUR BONES.
Nagashri says, I WISH I COULD GET STRONG BY LYING AROUND AND PURRING.
Eugenia says, WELL, SCIENTISTS HAVE ADAPTED THIS TECHNOLOGY FOR US TOO. JUST IMAGINE USING A VIBRATION MACHINE THAT HELPS YOU HEAL.
M.A.V.I.S says, AND IN SPACE ASTRONAUTS USE SIMILAR TECHNOLOGY TO KEEP THEIR BODIES AND BONES STRONG IN ZERO GRAVITY. OF COURSE, THAT SORT OF TECHNOLOGY WOULD ONLY BE NEEDED BY HUMAN OR ALIEN ASTRONAUTS. COMPUTERS WOULD HAVE NO SUCH WORRIES.
Nagashri asks, WHAT ABOUT BIG CATS LIKE TIGER AND LIONS? DO THEY PURR TOO?
Eugenia says, AN EXCELLENT QUESTION. BLYNK, ANIMAL FILES PLEASE. SUB-CAT-EGORY, LIONS AND TIGERS AND BONES. OH MY.
Blynk types on a control panel.
Eugenia says, BOTH SMALL AND LARGE CATS HAVE HYOID BONES, BUT IN LARGER CATS LIKE LIONS, TIGERS, LEOPARDS, AND JAGUARS THE BONE IS MORE FLEXIBLE, WHICH MEANS THE SOUND THEY MAKE IS A ROAR RATHER THAN A PURR.
(Lion roars)
(Aazoo gasps)
The mouse peeks out.
Nagashri says, DON'T BE SCARED AAZOO. MAYBE THE LION WAS JUST SAYING, IT'S NICE TO MEET YOU.
(Lions growling)
Eugenia says, LIONS DO COMMUNICATE POSITIVE FEELINGS WITH ROARS, SIMILAR TO HOW A CAT CAN EXPRESS HAPPINESS WITH A PURR. AND NOT ONLY DO CATS PURR WHEN THEY'RE HAPPY, WE THINK THAT CATS ALSO PURR WHEN THEY KNOW THAT YOU'RE HAPPY.
(Purring)
M.A.V.I.S says, SCIENTISTS STUDIED 12 CATS AND THEIR OWNERS. THEY FOUND THAT THE CATS WERE MORE LIKELY TO PERFORM POSITIVE BEHAVIOURS, SUCH AS PURRING, RUBBING, OR SITTING ON THEIR OWNERS’ LAPS, WHEN THEIR OWNERS WERE SMILING.
The mouse writes on a clipboard.
Nagashri says, AMAZING. SO CATS CAN ACTUALLY TELL WHO'S FRIENDLY, AND WHO ISN'T.
Blynk says, AHA!
M.A.V.I.S says, INSPIRATION DETECTED, INVENTION STATION IS READY CAPTAIN.
Blynk runs to a laboratory.
(Techno music)
Robots build a device. A robot cat comes out on a conveyor belt.
Blynk says, AH!
Blynk runs out with the robot cat following.
(Aazoo gasps)
(Blynk chuckles)
M.A.V.I.S says, AAZOO HAS ALWAYS WANTED A CAT.
(Aazoo sighs)
M.A.V.I.S says, BLYNK'S ROBOTIC FELINE IS USING PURRING VIBRATIONS TO HEAL AAZOO'S BONES.
The robot cat shoots beams at Aazoo’s foot.
(Blynk chuckles)
Aazoo pets the cat.
Blynk points to the mouse.
Nagashri says, UH OH.
The mouse smiles.
(Mouse giggles)
Eugenia says, THE SPACE MOUSE MUST HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO OUR CONVERSATION.
Nagashri says, HE'S SMILING SO THE INVENTION WILL PURR.
(Techno music)
The mouse hugs the cat.
M.A.V.I.S says, IT APPEARS THAT LOVE HAS CONQUERED ALL. A PURR-FECT ENDING.
Aazoo and Blynk hug the cat and mouse. The mouse eats cheese.
M.A.V.I.S says, THE QUEST FOR ANSWERS CONTINUES. ALL SYSTEMS ENGAGED.
(Upbeat techno outro music)
