Transcript: Is Plastic Bad?
[Upbeat music plays]
Aazoo, an animated orange alien, flips switches on a switchboard. Blynk, a green alien, sits beside him and pilots a spaceship.
A girl wears her black hair pulled away from her face. She wears a pink blouse and smiles as she waves.
A voice sings, BLYNK AND AAZOO
I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU.
Text reads, “Blynk and Aazoo. Ask, Explore, Discover!”
[Exclaiming, electronic music plays]
M.A.V.I.S, the ship computer, says, CAUTION.
ENTERING EARTH GARBAGE FIELD. IT'S
ABOUT TO GET JUNKY. I MEAN, BUMPY.
[Exclaiming, clicking]
M.A.V.I.S says, SPACE DECREE AVOIDANCE
SYSTEM ACTIVATED CAPTAIN.
Aazoo looks alarmed as Blynk cheerfully pilots the spaceship around debris.
[Alarmed exclamations, cheering]
M.A.V.I.S says, AVOIDANCE
SYSTEM TERMINATED.
Aazoo and Blynk look sad.
[Sad groan]
[Horn]
M.A.V.I.S says, INCOMING INQUIRY,
INQUIRY BOOTH TRANSMITTING.
[Cheering]
Blynk and Aazoo rush forward, forgetting to unfasten their seatbelts. Both snap back into their chairs.
[Laughter, slide whistle, seatbelts unbuckle]
Blynk and Aazoo run and stand in front of two screens. A girl appears on the screen on their left. She wears her black hair in two braid wears a purple shirt with pink flowers. Text beneath her reads, “Angelina.”
[Beeping]
Angelina says, HI BLYNK, AND
AAZOO, IT'S ME ANGELINA.
AND I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU.
IS PLASTIC BAD?
Blynk says, OOOH.
M.A.V.I.S says, MORE SPACE
JUNK APPROACHING CAPTAIN.
IT APPEARS THE ANSWER
TO YOUR QUESTION KEEPS
SLIPPING AWAY.
[Slide whistles, trumpet horn blows]
M.A.V.I.S says, INTERSTELLAR
SCIENCE COUNSEL CALLING, CAPTAIN.
A woman wears her blonde hair pulled away from her face in a ponytail. She wears a peach tee-shirt. Text beneath her reads, “Jessie. Scientist.”
Jessie says, HELLO EVERYONE. I'M JESSIE.
ANGELINA, I HEARD YOUR QUESTION
ABOUT WHETHER PLASTIC IS BAD.
I'D LOVE TO HELP YOU FIND
THE ANSWER.
Angelina says, AMAZING
Jessie says, BLYNK, PULL UP THE
MATERIAL FILES, PLEASE.
SUBCATEGORY. WELL, OIL WILL
BE DARNED.
Blynk’s hands move over a computer screen. On the screen, text reads, “Material Files. ‘Well, Oil be Darned!’”
[Static]
Jessie says, THIS IS HOW PLASTIC
IS MADE. FIRST YOU DRILL FOR OIL.
OIL IS TRANSPORTED TO A
REFINERY WHERE IT'S PROCESSED
AND THEN TURNED INTO A
MATERIAL CALLED POLYMERS.
Text beneath pipe attached to large vats reads, “Refinery.” Text beneath small pieces of plastic reads, “Polymers.”
[Beeping, rattling]
M.A.V.I.S says, POLYMERS ARE MADE
OF LONG REPEATING CHAINS OF
MOLECULES
[Upbeat music plays]
Jessie says, WHICH CAN BE MOLDED
AND TURNED INTO ALL KINDS OF
PLASTICS LIKE TOYS, DISHES, CARS,
FOOD, PACKAGING, AND EVEN MONEY.
Angelina asks, SO WHY DO PEOPLE SAY
THAT PLASTIC IS BAD FOR THE
ENVIRONMENT?
M.A.V.I.S says, PART OF THE PROBLEM
IS THAT IT TAKES A LONG TIME
TO BREAK DOWN OR BIODEGRADE.
Jessie says, IT CAN TAKE THOUSANDS
OF YEARS AND MOST OF IT, ENDS UP
IN THE GARBAGE.
Angelina asks, BUT WHAT ABOUT
RECYCLING? WE RECYCLE PLASTIC
AT OUR HOUSE. ISN'T THAT GOOD?
Recycling moves on a conveyor belt in a recycling plant.
[Clunking, buzzing conveyor belt]
Jessie says, WELL, ONLY TEN
PERCENT OF THE WORLDS PLASTIC
ACTUALLY GETS RECYCLED.
ALSO, RECYCLING WEAKENS PLASTIC.
SO YOU CAN'T RECYCLE IT FOREVER
LIKE GLASS AND METAL.
[Clunking]
M.A.V.I.S says, BRACE FOR
EVASIVE MANEUVERS
[Exclaiming]
M.A.V.I.S says, SPACE JUNK EVADED.
[Chimes]
Angelina says, SO EVEN THE PLASTIC
THAT I RECYCLE WILL EVENTUALLY
END UP IN THE GARBAGE?
Jessie says, OR, IT MIGHT END UP
SOMEWHERE ELSE. BLYNK?
Blynk says, AYEEE.
[Typing]
A truck dumps garbage on to dirt.
[Clattering, rustling]
Jessie says, EVENTUALLY, RECYCLED
AND SINGLE USE PLASTICS LIKE
CUPS, STRAWS, FOOD, WRAPPERS
AND GROCERY BAGS ARE ALL
THROWN IN THE GARBAGE.
WHERE THEY END UP IN LANDFILLS.
AND SOMETIMES, IN THE OCEAN.
[Whooshing, bird calls, seal honks]
Angelina exclaims, OH NO,
THAT'S TERRIBLE.
M.A.V.I.S says, MARINE ANIMALS
ARE OFTEN MISTAKE PLASTIC
FOR FOOD. IF THEY EAT IT, IT FILLS
UP THEIR STOMACH AND THEY CAN
DIE OF STARVATION. OR THEY GET
TRAPPED IN IT.
A map shows green dots in an ocean.
[Water flows]
Angelina asks, WHAT'S THAT?
Jessie says, THAT IS THE, NOT SO
GREAT, PACIFIC GARBAGE PATCH.
BETWEEN HAWAII, AND CALIFORNIA.
Text beneath the green dots reads, “Pacific Garbage Patch.” Yellow text labels “Hawaii” to the left of the garbage patch and California to the right. A line points to “Mexico.”
[Beeping]
M.A.V.I.S says, IT IS THE SIZE
OF MEXICO.
Angelina asks, HOW DOES SO MUCH
GARBAGE GET INTO THE OCEAN?
M.A.V.I.S says, SOMETIMES BY ILLEGAL
DUMPING. SOMETIMES FALLING OFF
OF BOATS, BUT A LOT OF IT GETS
CARRIED FROM LANDFILLS INTO
SEWERS, BY RAINWATER AND WIND.
FROM THERE, IT MAKES ITS WAY
INTO RIVERS, AND FINALLY INTO
THE OCEANS.
[Water flows]
Angelina says, SO MAYBE WE
SHOULDN'T USE PLASTIC AT ALL.
Jessie says, WELL, IT'S NOT THAT
SIMPLE PLASTIC CAN BE REALLY
USEFUL, EVEN NECESSARY.
M.A.V.I.S says, IN HEALTHCARE,
SYRINGES, TUBING, MASKS AND
GLOVES ARE MADE OF PLASTIC.
AND HELP PROTECT DOCTORS,
NURSES, AND PATIENTS
FROM GERMS.
Jessie says, AND, PLASTIC KEEPS
US SAFE ON THE ROADS.
IT'S IN YOUR BIKE HELMET
AND IN YOUR CAR'S AIRBAGS.
Angelina says, SO PLASTIC IS GOOD
AND BAD.
Jessie says, WE NEED IT, BUT WE
ALSO NEED TO FIGURE OUT A WAY
TO USE IT SO THAT IT WON'T HARM
OUR PLANET.
Angelina asks, WHAT ABOUT MAKING
SOMETHING LIKE PLASTIC THAT'S NOT
BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?
Jessie says, GREAT IDEA!
SCIENTISTS ARE WORKING
ON JUST THAT. BLYNK?
[Static, upbeat music plays]
M.A.V.I.S says, PACKAGING IS
CURRENTLY BEING MADE
FROM SEAWEED AND MUSHROOMS.
Jessie says, IT'S BIODEGRADABLE,
RENEWABLE, AND INEXPENSIVE
TO MAKE.
M.A.V.I.S says, ALSO LOCATED
DISPOSABLE SPOONS, FORKS,
AND BOWLS MADE FROM RICE,
AND WHEAT FLOUR.
Jessie says, WHEN YOU FINISH YOUR
TAKEOUT, YOU CAN EAT THEM!
Angelina says, SO COOL. I WANNA
INVENT SOMETHING THAT HELPS US
WITH OUR PLASTIC PROBLEMS TOO!
[Water flows]
Jessie says, GO FOR IT!
IN FACT, THIS CLEANUP SYSTEM
IS A TWO THOUSAND FOOT LONG
WATER BARRIER, THAT SUCKS
UP PLASTIC.
AND IT WAS INVENTED BY A YOUNG
MAN, BOYAN SLAT, WHO WAS JUST
A LITTLE OLDER THAN YOU.
A young man wears his wavy black hair loose to his shoulders. He wears a white jacket with patches. Text beneath him reads, “Boyan Slat.”
[Water sloshes]
Jessie says, HIS GOAL IS TO SHRINK
THE GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE PATCH
BY REMOVING ALMOST ALL OF THE
PLASTIC IN IT.
[Bell rings]
Blynk says, OOOH.
M.A.V.I.S says, INSPIRATION
DETECTED. INVENTION STATION
IS READY CAPTAIN.
[Whooshing, cheerful music plays, giggling]
[Happy gibberish]
Blynk wears a green, yellow and purple container on his back. A hose leads from the container to a device in Blynk’s hand.
Angelina asks, WHAT IS THAT BLYNK?
Blynk sucks a blue chair into the device. He turns a knob and a tiny chair falls out of the device. Angelina and Jessie look shocked.
[Exclaiming, vacuum buzz, slide whistle]
M.A.V.I.S says, IT APPEARS TO
BE A MINIATURIZING DEVICE.
I SUPPOSE DRINKING WASTE
WOULD REDUCE THE AMOUNT
OF IT.
Angelina says, GREAT IDEA BLYNK.
M.A.V.I.S says, BRACE FOR
EVASIVE MANEUVERS.
[Exclamations, squeaking]
Aaxoo disappears into Blynk’s device.
Blynk asks, AAZOO?
A tiny Aazoo falls out of the device.
[Laughing, boinging]
M.A.V.I.S says, CONGRATULATIONS,
BLYNK. YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY
REDUCED AAZOO.
Angelina says, NOW ALL YOU NEED
IS A MISSION TO REUSE AND RECYCLE.
Jessie says, FOR SURE.
[Upbeat music plays]
Blynk says, AHA.
Blynk drops the device and runs away. Aazoo stand with his hands on his hips.
[Squeaking]
Angelina and Jessie wave.
M.A.V.I.S says, THE QUEST FOR
ANSWERS CONTINUES.
ALL SYSTEMS ENGAGED.
[Exclaiming, electronic music plays]
Text reads, “Blynk and Aazoo. Ask, Explore, Discover!”
[Excited gibberish, upbeat music plays]
