Transcript: Why Do Dogs Sniff Butts?
(Upbeat music plays)
Three-eyed Aazoo, an animated orange alien sits beside Blynk, a one eyed green alien, who pilots a spaceship past meteoroids in space. A girl wears her black hair pulled away from her face. She wears a pink blouse and smiles as she waves. Blynk and Aazoo have fun with different experiments in their spaceship.
A singer sings, BLYNK AND AAZOO,
I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU.
Blynk and Aazoo wave beside text that reads, Blynk and Aazoo. Ask, Explore, Discover!
Blynk works at a desk. Aazoo cleans a window with a bucket and cloth while hanging upside down. Aazoo hums.
(Foghorn blowing)
Aazoo squeals and falls.
(Crashing)
Blynk looks worried.
M.A.V.I.S, a computer, says, INCOMING INQUIRY, INQUIRY
BOOTH TRANSMITTING.
Aazoo pops up from a pile of bubbles. The cloth covers Aazoo’s head and eyes.
Aazoo says, NAH PA!
Blynk groans. Blynk frowns and pulls the cloth off Aazoo’s head. Blynk smiles. The two alien friends squeal as they join M.A.V.I.S in front of two screens on a wall. A girl with long black hair and glasses who wears a grey shirt appears on one of the screens.
She says, HEY BLYNK AND AAZOO, MY NAME IS
ANGELINA.
Text reads, Angelina.
Angelina says, AND MY QUESTION IS WHY DO
DOGS SNIFF EACH OTHER'S BUTTS?
Blynk and Aazoo say, OH!
They whisper to each other indistinctly.
M.A.V.I.S says, BLYNK AND AAZOO ARE SNIFFING
OUT AN ANSWER FOR YOU.
Blynk and Aazoo shrug.
M.A.V.I.S says, BUT THEY DON'T SEEM TO HAVE ONE.
GET IT? BUTT? HAHA.
Angelina giggles. Blynk and Aazoo glance at each other and sigh.
M.A.V.I.S says, INTERSTELLAR SCIENCE
COUNSEL CALLING CAPTAIN.
(Trumpet flourish)
A man wearing a hat and pink button down shirt appears on the second screen beside Angelina.
He says, HEY EVERYONE, ANTHONY HERE.
Text reads, Anthony, Scientist.
Anthony says, GREAT QUESTION, ANGELINA.
IT MIGHT SEEM A LITTLE WEIRD TO
US,
BUT DOGS SNIFF EACH OTHER'S
BUTTS TO GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER.
Blynk and Aazoo say, OOH!
Angelina says, VERY INTERESTING.
Anthony says, BLYNK, PULL UP THE ANIMAL FILES
PLEASE.
SUBCATEGORY. I PUT A SMELL ON
YOU.
Blynk works on a screen where text reads, Animal Files, I Put a Smell on You. Blynk pulls up a picture of a dog. A video of a dogs nose is displayed.
Anthony says, A DOG'S NOSE IS A VERY POWERFUL
TOOL.
Blynk says, OOH!
M.A.V.I.S says, THEY HAVE ALMOST 300 MILLION
SCENT SENSORS
IN THEIR NOSES WHILE
HUMANS ONLY HAVE 6 MILLION.
A girl smells a flower.
Aazoo says, AH!
Angelina says, WOW, THEY MUST BE ABLE TO
SMELL A LOT MORE THAN US THEN.
M.A.V.I.S says, AFFIRMATIVE, AND JUDGING
FROM THE SMELL OF THE SHIP…
M.A.V.I.S narrows their eyes.
M.A.V.I.S says, …I ESTIMATE THAT THE BLYNK AND
AAZOO HAVE ZERO SCENT SENSORS.
Blynk and Aazoo smell their arm pits and shrug. Angelina shakes her head, grinning.
Anthony says, DOGS ALSO HAVE A SECOND ORGAN
IN THEIR SNOUT JUST FOR SMELLING
THINGS.
IT'S CALLED THE VOMERONASAL
ORGAN.
Text reads, Vomeronasal Organ.
Angelina says, VO-MERO-NASAL?
Anthony says, YOU GOT IT.
AND THIS VOMERONASAL
ORGAN IS SUPER SENSITIVE.
In a blueprint of a dog, an arrow points to the location of the organ in their nose.
Anthony says, IT'S HOW DOGS CAN DETECT
THE SMALLEST SCENT MOLECULES
WHICH HUMANS ARE UNABLE TO
SMELL.
THIS SUPER SMELL ORGAN MEANS
THAT
WHEN THEY MEET ANOTHER DOG,
THEY CAN IDENTIFY THEIR GENDER,
THEIR MOOD
AND THEIR HEALTH JUST BY
SNIFFING THEM!
Angelina says, BUT WHY SNIFF THEIR BUTTS?
Anthony says, WELL, IT TURNS OUT THAT THE
PLACE FOR DOGS
GIVE ALL MOST OF THEIR
SCENT IS THEIR REAR END.
A dog sniffs another dogs butt.
M.A.V.I.S says, TO BE MORE PRECISE,
IT IS THE ANAL GLAND LOCATED
ON EITHER SIDE OF THE ANUS.
In a blueprint of a dogs butt, arrows point to the location of their anal glands.
Angelina asks, HEY, DO OTHER ANIMALS SNIFF
EACH OTHER'S BUTTS TOO.
Anthony says, GREAT QUESTION.
SOME ANIMALS LIKE CATS, DO,
BUT OTHER ANIMALS GREET EACH
OTHER IN DIFFERENT WAYS.
Blynk says, HAKA.
Anthony says, GREAT IDEA BLYNK. LET'S
LOOK UP ANIMAL FILES,
SUBCATEGORY, HOWDY HO,
NEIGHBOUR!
Text on Blynk’s screen reads, Animal Files, Howdy Ho, Neighbour. Blynk pulls up a picture of a dolphin. A video of a dolphin whistling plays.
Anthony says, DOLPHINS CAN RECOGNIZE ONE
ANOTHER
OVER LONG DISTANCES,
THANKS TO THEIR SUPER
UNIQUE SIGNATURE WHISTLES.
Text reads, dolphins.
Anthony says, THEY LEARN THEIR WHISTLES FROM
THEIR MOMS,
WHEN THEY'RE BABIES.
Blynk and Aazoo say, AWW!
Angelina says, DOLPHINS ARE BEAUTIFUL.
Anthony says, GORILLAS GREET EACH OTHER
BY TOUCHING NOSES OR BY
GIVING A REASSURING EMBRACE.
Text over gorillas playing reads, Gorillas.
Angelina says, LIKE HOW I HUG MY MOM TO SAY
HELLO.
M.A.V.I.S says, I WOULD LIKE TO TRY A HUG.
Aazoo squeals. Blynk groans. Aazoo hangs upside down beside one of M.A.V.I.S’s computers on the ceiling. Aazoo hugs the computer.
M.A.V.I.S says, I CANNOT FEEL MY SENSES.
Blynk sighs dramatically.
M.A.V.I.S says, THAT WAS CONFINING, BUT ODDLY
COMFORTING.
Aazoo smiles.
M.A.V.I.S says, I SUGGEST WE RETURN OUR FOCUS TO
ANIMALS.
Anthony says, THANKS MAVIS.
ELEPHANTS SAY HI BY
ENTWINING THEIR TRUNKS,
GIRAFFES PRESS THEIR NECKS
TOGETHER,
HORSES RUB NOSES,
AND PENGUINS, WELL THEY JUST
KIND OF SHOUT THEIR HELLOS.
Angelina says, OH, THAT'S SO INTERESTING.
SO I GUESS CATS
AND DOGS ARE THE ONLY
ONES WITH GROSS HELLOS.
Anthony says, WELL ACTUALLY…
M.A.V.I.S says, ACCESSING GROSS HELLOS.
Blynk types on a keyboard.
Anthony says, NOW THIS EXAMPLE IS KIND OF OUT
THERE.
A video plays of a lobster.
Anthony says, IF A LOBSTER IS TRYING TO
PROTECT THEIR TERRITORY
THEY MIGHT GREET ON OTHER
LOBSTER
BY SPRAYING THEIR URINE AT THEM!
Angelina says, WHOA, THAT IS EXTREME.
Aazoo looks shocked. Blynk groans. They both faint.
Anthony says, SO YOU SEE, THERE ARE ALL KINDS
OF CREATIVE WAYS TO SAY
HI IN THE ANIMAL KINGDOM.
Angelina says, I THINK I'LL STICK WITH THE
HUMAN WAY.
YOU KNOW, A WAVE.
Anthony says, WELL SURE, BUT THERE ARE
ACTUALLY
MANY WAYS THAT HUMANS SAY HELLO.
BLYNK?
Blynk types on the keyboard. A map is displayed that highlights Asia.
M.A.V.I.S says, IN SOME PLACES IN THE WORLD,
LIKE JAPAN,
CAMBODIA, THAILAND, AND LAOS,
PEOPLE PREFER A NO
PHYSICAL CONTACT GREETING,
LIKE BOWING.
Examples of the types of greetings are displayed.
Angelina says, OH YEAH, I KNEW THAT ALREADY.
Anthony says, AND OTHER PLACES, A KISS
ON THE CHEEK IS IN ORDER.
Angelina says, I KNEW THAT TOO!
Anthony says, BUT DID YOU KNOW THAT THE NUMBER
OF KISSES CAN CHANGE
DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU ARE?
Angelina says, IT DOES?
Anthony nods.
M.A.V.I.S says, INDEED. THE INTERNATIONAL
MANUAL FOR GREETING KISSES
RECOMMENDS THE FOLLOWING.
IN SOUTH AMERICA,
ONE KISS ON ONE CHEEK.
Aazoo kisses Blynk on the cheek. Blynk look surprised A counter reads, 1 kiss.
M.A.V.I.S says, EUROPE AND THE FRENCH
SPEAKING PARTS OF CANADA,
TWO KISSES...ONE ON EACH CHEEK.
Aazoo gives Blynk two kisses. The counter reads, 2 kisses. Anthony nods.
M.A.V.I.S says, IN RUSSIA AND UKRAINE, THREE IS
THE NORM.
Aazoo gives Blynk three kisses. The counter reads,3 kisses, Blynk smiles. Angelina giggles.
M.A.V.I.S says, AND IN SOME PARTS OF FRANCE,
A WHOPPING FOUR AIR KISSES
ON ALTERNATING CHEEKS
IS THE WAY TO SAY HELLO.
Aazoo gives Blynk four kisses. The counter reads, 4 kisses.
M.A.V.I.S says, WOW! NOW THAT'S A LOT OF
KISSING.
Anthony says, IT SURE IS.
BUT HERE'S WHAT'S REALLY
INTERESTING.
Blynk and Aazoo looks curious.
Anthony says, THE PRACTICE OF KISSING MIGHT
HAVE COME
FROM NEEDING TO SMELL EACH
OTHER.
BLYNK, CAN YOU SHOW US
KUNIK PLEASE?
Blynk brings up a picture of an elderly woman holding a young child.
Anthony says, IN SOME INUIT COMMUNITIES,
FAMILY MEMBERS GREET
LOVED ONES WITH KUNIK.
HERE, HEY PLACE THEIR NOSE AND
UPPER LIP
AGAINST SOMEONE'S CHEEK
OR FOREHEAD AND SNIFF.
A video plays of two women demonstrating a Kunik. The women giggle.
Angelina says, THAT MAKES SENSE.
I DO LOVE THE SMELL OF MY MOM
WHEN WE HUG.
Anthony nods.
He says, EXACTLY. SMELL IS IMPORTANT TO
ALL SPECIES
WHEN GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER.
Blynk says, OH.
M.A.V.I.S says, INSPIRATION DETECTED.
INVENTION STATION IS READY,
CAPTAIN.
(Funky music plays)
In the spaceships invention station, Blynk runs up to a large lever giggling. Blynk jumps and pulls down on the lever. A machine turns on.
Blynk says, HA HAAA!
Blynk pulls another lever. A liquid rushes through a pipe. Blynk squeezes out a drop of a purple liquid and sparks fly. Mechanical arms weld an item together. Blynk returns, walking up to Aazoo wearing a robot suit. Aazoo gasps.
Angelina says, WOW!
WHAT IS THAT?
Blynk waves with the suit. Aazoo waves back.
M.A.V.I.S says, IT APPEARS TO BE A
UNIVERSAL GREETING SUIT.
Blynk hugs Aazoo with the greeting suit. Blynk tries more greetings.
Anthony says, MIGHT BE A BIT EXTREME.
One of the suit controls hits Blynk in the face.
Blynk says, OOO.
Aazoo waves. The suit sparks. Blynk and Aazoo continue exchanging greetings.
Angelina says, UH OH, WHAT'S HAPPENING?
M.A.V.I.S says, BLYNK AND AAZOO APPEAR TO BE
STUCK
IN A QUANTUM LOOP OF HELLOS AND
GOODBYES.
Anthony says, WELL, I GUESS WE'LL JUST
SEE OURSELVES OUT THEN.
Blynk and Aazoo’s greetings speed up.
Angelina says, BYE EVERYBODY.
Angelina and Anthony wave.
Blynk says, PEEK AH.
Aazoo squeaks. The two friends continue their greetings with Blynk’s suit. Which include a wave.
M.A.V.I.S says, THE QUEST FOR ANSWERS
CONTINUES.
ALL SYSTEMS ENGAGED.
