Text reads, tvokids.

A child says, WHEE!

(Giggling)

A narrator says, IT'S "WHAT'S THE BUZZ?
WITH LEO."
TAKING YOU BEHIND THE SCENES
TO FIND OUT ALL THE BUZZ
ABOUT THE AMAZING WORK THAT'S
HAPPENING AT PARKS CANADA
TO HELP OUR POLLINATORS.

People work in parks.

The narrator, blue and red fish Leo, says, POLLINHEADS, TODAY WE'RE
MEETING UP WITH MADDIE,
FROM BRUCE PENINSULA
NATIONAL PARK,
TO FIND OUT HOW THEY'RE
LENDING A FIN
TO HELP OUT NOT JUST
A POLLINATOR PAL,
BUT ITS BFF POLLEN PROVIDER.

A flag is pinned in Bruce Peninsula National Park in Ontario on a map of Canada.

Leo says, SO, MADDIE, WHO'S THAT PRICKLY
PLANT IN FRONT OF YOU?

Maddie kneels on the ground. She wears grey pants and a green polo shirt. She has light, long wavy hair and glasses. Text reads, Maddie Sanagan, Bruce Peninsula Park, Park Ranger.

Maddie says, THIS IS A HILL'S THISTLE.

Maddie points to a plant she kneels by.

She says, THE HILL'S THISTLE
IS A SPECIES AT RISK,
WHICH MEANS THAT
IT'S IN TROUBLE.

A bee rests in the purple flower of the hills thistle plant.

Maddie says, THIS PLANT IS A GREAT
NECTAR PRODUCER,
SO, IT PRODUCES LOTS OF FOOD
FOR ALL SORTS OF POLLINATORS.
MOSTLY BUMBLEBEES.

Leo says, IT'S LIKE THEY SAY,
POLLINHEADS,
NEVER JUDGE A PLANT
BY ITS THORNS.

Maddie says, THE AMERICAN BUMBLEBEE IS ONE
OF MAIN POLLINATORS
OF THIS PLANT, AND IT IS ALSO
A SPECIES AT RISK.
MEANING THEY ARE
ALSO IN TROUBLE.

Leo says, SO, HOW ARE YOU SOLVING
THIS POLLINATOR PLANT PROBLEM?

Maddie says, WE WORKED WITH THE
UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH,
TO HELP OUT THE HILL'S THISTLE
POPULATION,
BY TAKING SEED COLLECTION
AND PROPAGATION INTO THE LAB.

A man in a suit walks through a lab.

Leo says, SCIENCE HELPING OUT
MOTHER NATURE?
I'VE GOTTA FIND OUT MORE
ABOUT THIS!
PROFESSOR, HOW ARE YOU
LENDING A FIN
TO HELP THE HILL'S THISTLE?

Leo connects with Maddie and the man from the lab with video calls. The professor sits at a table in the lab. Text reads, Dr. Praveen Saxena, Gosling Research Institute for Plant Preservation (GRIPP) Professor and Director.

Dr. Saxena says, WELL, THIS LAB IS UH,
GROWING HILL'S THISTLE
IN CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENTS.
THEY ARE GIVEN THE BEST
POSSIBLE CARE

Leo says, SO, WHAT EXACTLY
IS THIS TECHNOLOGY
YOU'RE REFERRING TO?

Dr. Saxena says, CALL THIS
TEST TUBE TECHNOLOGY.
WE CAN TAKE A VERY SMALL
PART OF A PLANT,
IT COULD BE A SEED,
IT COULD BE A BUD,
AND THEN, WE MULTIPLY THEM
IN VERY LARGE NUMBERS.

Leo says, WELL, THIS SOUNDS
POLL-INCREDIBLE,
TO BE ABLE TO GROW AS MANY
HILL'S THISTLES
AS YOU COULD EVER WANT!
AMAZING!

Dr. Saxena says, ONCE WE HAVE GENERATED
HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS
OF THESE PLANTS,
WE CAN PLANT THEM IN NATURE.
CAN ALSO PRESERVE THEM.
WE CAN PUT THEM IN COLD STORAGE
IN LIQUID NITROGEN.

A person works in the lab.

Leo says, SO, HOW MANY HILL'S
THISTLES HAVE YOU PLANTED
WITH YOUR PALS
AT PARKS CANADA?

Dr. Saxena says, WE HAVE PLANTED
450 PLANTS
UH, OF HILL'S THISTLE
IN PARKS CANADA.

Pictures of people planting hills thistles are displayed.

Leo says, THAT'S POLLEN-TABULOUS!
MADDIE, HOW ARE THE
HILL'S THISTLES DOING?

Maddie says, EVERY YEAR, WE GO OUT
AND MONITOR THESE PLANTS,
WHICH MEANS WE GO OUT
AND COUNT THEM.
THEY'RE DOING WHAT
THEY NEED TO DO,
UM, AND THEY ARE MAKING
A BIT OF A COMEBACK HERE.

Maddie works in the park.

Leo says, OOH, I BET THE BEES
ARE HAPPY, THEN!

Maddie says, DEFINITELY, THE BEES ARE
GETTING MUCH HAPPIER,
NOW THAT THEY HAVE MORE FOOD,
UM, AND THAT THEY'VE GOT
MORE PLANTS TO VISIT.

Leo says, AW!
SCIENCE BEING A BFF
TO NATURE.
WHO KNEW TECHNOLOGY COULD BE
SUCH A GOOD FRIEND
TO THE NATURAL WORLD?
WE NEED OUR POLLINATING PALS,
AND THEY NEED US!
TOGETHER, WE'RE JUST ALL
FRIENDS WHO NEED EACH OTHER.
LATER, POLLINATORS!
