A drawing of a logo reveals a beaver.
(Bright music plays)
Text reads, tvokids.
A child says, WHEE!
(Giggling)
A narrator says, IT'S "WHAT'S THE BUZZ?
WITH LEO."
TAKING YOU BEHIND THE SCENES
TO FIND OUT ALL THE BUZZ
ABOUT THE AMAZING WORK THAT'S
HAPPENING AT PARKS CANADA
TO HELP OUR POLLINATORS.
People work in parks.
The narrator, blue and red fish Leo, says, POLLINHEADS, WE'VE GOT A REALLY
IMPORTANT TOPIC TODAY: SNACKS!
WE ALL HAVE OUR OWN FAVOURITE
TASTY TREATS.
Different types of snacks are displayed on screens behind Leo.
Leo says, BUGS ARE AT THE TOP OF MY LIST.
MM-MM!
BUT WHEN IT COMES TO OUR
POLLINATING PALS,
IT'S ALL ABOUT THAT
SWEET NECTAR.
THE TEAM FROM FORT RODD HILL
AND FISGARD LIGHTHOUSE
NATIONAL HISTORIC SITES
HAS CREATED A PARADISE
FOR OUR HUNGRY POLLINATORS.
A flag is pinned in Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites in Victoria, British Columbia on a map of Canada.
Leo says, NATHAN, YOU'VE BEEN HELPING
TO RESTORE
THE GARRY OAK ECOSYSTEM.
TELL US MORE!
On one of Leo’s screens is Nathan, who wears a hat and blue shirt. Text reads, Nathan Fisk, Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites, Ecologist and “Plant BFF.”
Nathan says, YOU KNOW, THIS REGION
IS THE, ONE OF THE MOST
BIODIVERSE IN CANADA.
THERE'S REALLY LESS THAN ABOUT
FIVE PERCENT OF IT REMAINING.
Leo says, WHOA. BUT WASN'T THE
GARRY OAK LEARNING MEADOW
JUST A BIG PATCH OF GRASS?
WHAT'S YOUR SECRET FOR CREATING
THE ULTIMATE POLLINATOR BUFFET?
Nathan says, YEAH, WHEN I SHOWED UP, WE,
WE WERE LAYING OUT THE MULCH.
WE WERE LAYING OUT THE FRESH
SOIL TO SMOTHER THE GRASS
AND PROVIDE NUTRIENT THAT
HAD BEEN, BEEN LACKING.
Leo says, YOU'RE KEEPING A NURSERY
FOR PLANTS
THAT ARE AT RISK OF EXTINCTION
TO MAKE SURE OUR POLLINATING
PALS HAVE LOTS TO EAT.
Nathan says, ONCE THESE SPECIES
WERE IDENTIFIED
AS BEING AT RISK,
WE NEEDED SEEDS TO,
TO BRING THEM BACK.
A person works in a garden.
Nathan says, THE THING WE CAN DO HERE IS
GROW THAT STOCK,
THEN WE CAN GIVE THE SEED
TO OTHER PLACES.
Leo says, SHARING IS CARING,
ESPECIALLY WHEN IT
COMES TO PROTECTING
OUR SPECIES AT RISK PLANTS
AND THEIR POLLINATORS.
Nathan says, IF THE MEADOW DIDN'T EXIST,
THESE POLLINATORS
WOULDN'T BE HERE.
Different pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds and plants are displayed.
Leo says, NO PLANTS, NO POLLINATORS.
NUH-UH!
Nathan chuckles.
He says, THAT'S A GOOD
POINT, LEO.
THE PLANTS ARE THE BASE OF THE,
THE WHOLE COMMUNITY HERE.
YOU KNOW THEY, THEY PROVIDE
FOOD FOR US AND THE INSECTS,
AND THE INSECTS PROVIDE FOOD
FOR THE BIRDS.
AND IT-IT JUST CARRIES ON,
ALONG THE WHOLE ECOSYSTEM,
THAT WAY.
Leo says, THERE YOU HAVE IT!
THE PLANTS NEED THEIR HOME
IN THE ECOSYSTEM
SO THERE'S FOOD AND A HOME
FOR OUR POLLINATORS.
AND LET'S FACE IT,
IF OUR POLLINATORS ARE WELL
FED, SO ARE WE!
(Stomach grumbling)
Leo says, OOH, SPEAKING OF WHICH,
I THINK I NEED TO FIND MYSELF
A SNACK.
LATER, POLLINATORS!
(Soft music plays)
Leo watches credits roll on a screen.
Created, written and directed by Karen Hawes.
