Sienna says, HELLO MY NAME'S SIENNA,
WELCOME TO MY HOUSE, COME IN.
The narrator says, HELLO, SIENNA.
Sienna says, THIS IS MY DAD AND
THIS IS MY SISTER.
Sienna’s father wears a blue sweater over a white shirt and jeans. He holds Sienna’s sister’s hand. She wears a blue dress and wears a headband over her blonde curly hair.
Sienna’s father says, HELLO.
Sienna’s sister says, HI.
The narrator says, HI, GUYS.
Sienna syas, AND THIS IS MY KITCHEN.
TODAY I'M GOING TO BE MAKING
JOLLOF RICE, BECAUSE I LOVE TO
EAT IT.
The narrator says, SIENNA'S DAD
HAS TAUGHT HER A SPECIAL WAY
OF MAKING JOLLOF RICE THAT SHE
CAN DO ALL ON HER OWN.
SIENNA'S DAD IS ORIGINALLY
FROM NIGERIA.
Sienna puts a bowl on a kitchen countertop.
[Thump]
A green arrow points to Nigeria on a world map.
The narrator says, NIGERIA IS A
COUNTRY IN AFRICA. THERE ARE
MORE PEOPLE LIVING IN NIGERIA
THAN IN ANY OTHER AFRICAN COUNTRY.
IN SOME NIGERIAN FAMILIES,
CHILDREN LEARN TO COOK FROM
A VERY YOUNG AGE, AND HELP
TO COOK AND SERVE THE FOOD
TO THEIR FAMILIES.
RICE IS A VERY IMPORTANT
INGREDIENT IN NIGERIAN COOKING,
AND MANY FAMILIES EAT IT AT
LEAST ONCE A DAY.
JOLLOF RICE IS A VERY POPULAR
RECIPE IN NIGERIA, AND EACH
FAMILY HAS THEIR OWN SPECIAL
WAY OF MAKING IT, ADDING IN
DIFFERENT VEGETABLES AND MEATS
THAT THEY LIKE.
[Faucet water flows]
The narrator says, SIENNA HAS WASHED
HER HANDS, PUT ON HER APRON,
AND SHE'S READY TO COOK.
Sienna says, I'M MAKING JOLLOF RICE
FOR MY FRIENDS.
The narrator says, SHE'S INVITED MAX,
AVA AND SOPHIA TO TASTE ONE OF
THE INGREDIENTS BEFORE THEY
COME ROUND FOR A VERY SPECIAL
MEAL LATER.
Max sits on stairs as he waves. Max wears his blond hair short and wears a blue shirt that matches his blue eyes. Ava stands in front of a wooden fence. She wears her long blond hair held back with pink barrettes and a pink shirt. Sophia smiles as she waves. She wears her long brown hair pulled back with a headband an d a white shirt.
The narrator asks, WHAT'S THAT?
Sophia opens a box with a chopped green herb inside.
Sophia says, IT'S A HERB.
Max says, I THINK IT'S A TYPE OF HERB.
The narrator says, YOU'RE RIGHT.
IT'S A HERB, FRESH THYME.
Ava says, THAT'S DISGUSTING.
The narrator says, OH DEAR!
Sophia says, IT TASTES MINTY.
The narrator says, NO ONE IS
AT ALL SURE ABOUT THE TASTE
OF FRESH THYME.
Max says, I DON'T REALLY LIKE IT.
Bowls with ingredients appear as the narrator lists them.
[Popping]
The narrator says, LET'S FIND
OUT IF SIENNA CAN CHANGE
THEIR MINDS, BECAUSE THYME
IS A VERY SPECIAL INGREDIENT
IN HER JOLLOF RICE.
AS WELL AS FRESH THYME, YOU'LL
NEED SALT, OLIVE OIL, BASMATI
RICE, TINNED PLUM TOMATOES,
FROZEN PEAS, BAY LEAVES, SWEET
RED POINTED PEPPER, SPRING
ONIONS, MEDIUM CURRY POWDER,
GROUND NUTMEG, SMOKED PAPRIKA,
BLACK PEPPER, GARLIC CLOVES,
STOCK POWDER, TOMATO PUREE
AND WATER.
Sienna says, FIRST OF ALL, I'M GOING
TO PUT THE RICE INTO THE WATER
SO IT'S EASIER TO COOK.
[Clicking, rattling]
The narrator says, THAT'S RIGHT,
LEAVE IT TO SOAK.
Sienna says, NEXT, I'M GOING TO
DRAIN OUT THE TOMATOES,
THOUGH THEY LOOK VERY SQUISHY.
Sienna pours tomatoes into a strainer and catches the juice in a bowl beneath.
The narrator says, YOU'LL NEED
TO SAVE THAT JUICE FOR LATER.
Sienna explains, WE PUT THE
TOMATOES INTO THE BOWL.
AND THEN CHOP THEM UP INTO
REALLY SMALL, SMALL PIECES.
[Clinking]
The narrator says, YEAH, BE CAREFUL
WITH THOSE SCISSORS.
Sienna says, I ADD FROZEN PEAS INTO
THE POT.
[Clatter]
The narrator says, AND NOW FOR THE
SWEET POINTED PEPPER.
[Pop]
Sienna says, SO YOU TWIST IT, IT'S
GOT A NICE POPPING SOUND WHEN
YOU TWIST IT, AND THEN TAKE ALL
THE SEEDS OUT.
The narrator says, HOST: THEN
CAREFULLY CUT IT UP.
[Scissors snip]
Sienna says, I HOPE MY FRIENDS ARE
GOING TO LIKE THIS JOLLOF RICE.
NOW WE'VE CUT ALL THE PEPPERS,
WE'LL PUT THEM INSIDE THE POT.
[Water pours]
The narrator says, AND TOP AND TAIL
THE SPRING ONIONS.
OH, WHERE DID THAT ONE GO?
CHOP THEM INTO SMALL PIECES.
Sienna says, I'M JUST GOING TO PUT
THE SPRINGY ONIONS INTO THE POT.
The narrator says, DRAIN THE SOAKED RICE.
Sienna says, NOW I'M GOING TO ADD
MY RICE INTO MY POT.
The narrator says, THEN PEEL THE SKIN
OFF THE GARLIC CLOVE.
IF YOU FIND THIS TRICKY, YOU
COULD ALWAYS ASK A GROWN-UP
TO HELP.
Sienna says, AND NOW YOU JUST PUT
IT IN YOUR BAG AND--
AND JUST BASH IT.
[Crinkling bag, banging]
The narrator says, THAT'S EVER SO
NOISY BUT VERY CLEVER.
[Crinkling]
Sienna says, NEXT WE'RE GOING TO
ADD THIS GARLIC TO THE TOMATO JUICE.
SO NOW IT'S TIME FOR MY VERY
SPECIAL INGREDIENT.
The narrator says, YOU KNOW WHAT
THAT IS.
Sienna says, THYME.
The narrator says, THAT'S RIGHT.
THYME IS A PLANT WITH SMALL
GREEN LEAVES.
IT HAS A STRONG TASTE AND SMELL
AND IS USED AS A HERB TO ADD
DELICIOUS FLAVOUR TO LOTS OF
DIFFERENT TYPES OF COOKING.
THYME SMELLS SO NICE THAT IT HAS
BEEN USED AS AN INGREDIENT IN
PERFUME. AND IN ANCIENT TIMES,
IT WAS EVEN USED IN PEOPLE'S
BATHS TO HELP THEM SMELL NICE.
An animated person leans back in a bathtub filled with bubbles. A yellow rubber duck perches on top of the bubbles.
[Quack]
Sienna says, WE'RE GOING TO TAKE
SOME THYME AND PULL ALL THE
LEAVES OFF INTO THE TOMATO JUICE.
IT'S REALLY EASY TO PULL OFF
THE LEAVES OF THE THYME.
The narrator says, NOW WE CAN
ADD SOME SMOKED PAPRIKA,
MEDIUM CURRY POWDER, STOCK
POWDER, BAY LEAVES, NUTMEG,
AND A GOOD TWIST OF BLACK
PEPPER. WELL DONE, SIENNA.
Sienna says, NOW I'M GOING TO
ADD THE TOMATO PUREE.
The narrator says, GREAT, THEN
AFTER THAT, WE'RE GOING TO GIVE
IT A REALLY GOOD STIR.
YEAH, MIX IT, MIX IT, MIX IT.
Sienna says, THEN I'M GOING TO
POUR THE WATER INTO THE TOMATO
AND SPICES.
[Water splashes, stirring]
She says, I'M GOING TO GET MY
CHOPPED TOMATOES AND ADD
IT INTO THE BOWL. AND ALSO
MY SAUCE AND SPICES. AND STIR.
[Thumping, splashing]
The narrator says, WONDERFUL COLOURS.
Sienna says, ALL THE INGREDIENTS
ARE IN THE POT, IT'S TIME FOR MY
DAD TO PUT IT IN THE OVEN. DAD!
Sienna’s father says, OH WOW,
SIENNA! THAT LOOKS AMAZING.
The narrator says, ASK A GROWN UP
TO PUT IT IN THE OVEN FOR YOU.
AND DAD'S MADE A NIGERIAN SALAD
TO GO WITH IT.
[Clanking, click]
Sienna says, IT LOOKS VERY COLOURFUL.
The narrator says,: SIENNA'S HELPING
TO FINISH IT OFF WITH SLICED
HARDBOILED EGGS. SO IF YOU WANT
TO MAKE SIENNA'S JOLLOF RICE...
ADD BASMATI RICE TO WATER,
AND LEAVE IT TO SOAK.
DRAIN THE TOMATOES THROUGH
A SIEVE AND SAVE THE JUICE FOR
LATER. TIP THEM INTO A BOWL,
AND CAREFULLY CHOP THEM UP.
NOW ADD FROZEN PEAS TO AN
OVENPROOF DISH, TWIST A SWEET
RED POINTED PEPPER LIKE THIS.
AND PULL OUT THE SEEDS.
CAREFULLY CUT IT INTO PIECES,
THEN ADD IT TO THE POT.
TOP AND TAIL SPRING ONIONS
AND CUT THEM INTO SMALL PIECES,
THEN ADD THESE TO THE POT TOO.
DRAIN THE SOAKED RICE WITH A
SIEVE AND ADD THAT TO THE POT.
PEEL THE SKIN OFF A GARLIC
CLOVE, PUT IT IN A PLASTIC FOOD
BAG AND BASH IT. ADD THE CRUSHED
GARLIC TO THE SAVED TOMATO JUICE.
PICK AND ADD FRESH THYME LEAVES,
ADD SMOKED PAPRIKA. MEDIUM
CURRY POWDER. STOCK POWDER.
BAY LEAVES. GROUND NUTMEG.
BLACK PEPPER.
AND DON'T FORGET TO WASH YOUR
HANDS AFTER TOUCHING SPICES.
SOME TOMATO PUREE. WATER.
AND THEN GIVE IT A GOOD MIX.
ADD THE CHOPPED TOMATOES
AND THE JUICE MIXTURE TO
THE COOKING POT.
NOW STIR EVERYTHING TOGETHER
REALLY WELL. MIX IT, MIX IT, MIX IT.
PUT THE LID ON AND ASK A
GROWN-UP TO PUT IT IN THE OVEN
FOR YOU.
NOW THERE'S JUST ENOUGH TIME FOR
SIENNA TO GET THE TABLE READY
FOR HER NIGERIAN FEAST.
WHAT'S THAT?
Sienna sets a table with plates, napkins and cups. She puts a bowl of bits of dough on the table.
[Thunk]
Sienna says, THIS IS NIGERIAN CHIN
CHIN, A SPECIAL TREAT I'M GONNA GIVE
TO MY FRIENDS AFTER OUR DINNER.
[Doorbell rings]
The narrator says, THEY'RE HERE.
THE CHIN CHIN LOOKS TASTY AND
THE TABLE LOOKS AMAZING.

THEIR HANDS AND IS READY TO EAT.
A girl’s voice says, I LIKE IT.

NIGERIAN DISH FOR EVERYONE TO
EAT. THIS IS NIGERIAN CHIN CHIN,
THIS IS WHAT WE'LL HAVE AFTER
OUR JOLLOF.
Ava asks, WHAT'S CHIN CHIN?
Sienna explains, IT'S A SPECIAL NIGERIAN
SNACK. IT'S LIKE A HARD,
HARD BISCUIT.

Ava says, CAN'T WAIT.
The narrator says, HERE'S DAD
WITH THE COOKED FOOD.
Sienna’s father says, THERE YOU
GO, GUYS. COOLED DOWN AND
READY TO EAT.
The narrator says, HE'S TAKEN OUT
THE BAY LEAVES NOW IT'S COOKED.
OH, IT LOOKS SO COLOURFUL
AND DELICIOUS.
Ava says, THAT LOOKS TASTY.
Sienna says, EVERYONE, PLEASE TUCK
IN TO THE NIGERIAN SALAD AND
JOLLOF RICE.
The narrator says, EARLIER ON,
SIENNA'S FRIENDS WEREN'T TOO
SURE ABOUT THE TASTE OF
FRESH THYME.
DO YOU THINK THEY'LL LIKE IT
COOKED IN SIENNA'S JOLLOF RICE?
Sophia says, THAT'S REALLY NICE.
Ava says, I LIKE IT.
Max says, THIS IS MY FIRST NIGERIAN
FOOD AND IT'S VERY GOOD.
Sienna asks, SO WHAT DO YOU THINK
THE SPECIAL INGREDIENT IS TODAY?
Her friends say, THYME.
Sienna asks, DO YOU LIKE THE
TASTE OF THYME IN JOLLOF RICE?
Her friends answer, YES.
The narrator says, WELL DONE, SIENNA.
THEY DO LIKE THE TASTE OF THYME
NOW IT'S BEEN COOKED IN YOUR
JOLLOF RICE.
