Transcript: Gabriel's Cornish Pasties
A split screen shows images of kids playing kitchenware as musical instruments.
In colourful letters, the name of the show appears between a fork and a knife. It reads "My world kitchen."
The narrator says WHOSE KITCHEN ARE
WE GOING TO TODAY?
Gabriel opens his door and says HI, I'M GABRIEL.
WELCOME TO MY HOUSE.
COME ON IN!
Gabriel is around 7, with slightly wavy blond hair and wears jeans and a blue tee.
He says THIS IS MY MUM.
Mum says HI.
The narrator says HI, MUM.
Gabriel says AND THIS IS MY KITCHEN.
TODAY I'M GOING TO MAKE CORNISH
PASTIES BECAUSE I LOVE TO EAT
THEM.
The narrator says GABRIEL'S MUM HAS SHOWN HIM A
VERY SPECIAL WAY TO MAKE
CORNISH PASTIES, WHICH TASTE
ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS.
GABRIEL'S FAMILY LIVE IN A PART
OF ENGLAND CALLED CORNWALL.
CORNWALL IS IN THE SOUTHWEST
CORNER OF ENGLAND.
An animated world map shows the location of Cornwall, England.
The narrator says THERE ARE LOTS OF BEAUTIFUL
BEACHES AND COUNTRYSIDE IN
CORNWALL AND MANY PEOPLE GO
THERE FOR THEIR HOLIDAYS.
CORNWALL IS FAMOUS FOR ITS
CORNISH PASTIES.
THEY ARE MADE FROM A PASTRY
CASE, WHICH IS FILLED WITH MEAT
AND VEGETABLES.
THEY ARE VERY TASTY AND CAN
REALLY FILL YOU UP.
CORNISH PASTIES WERE INVENTED
MANY YEARS AGO AND WERE A VERY
POPULAR LUNCHTIME MEAL AS THEY
WERE EASY TO CARRY TO WORK
WRAPPED IN EITHER CLOTH OR
PAPER.
THEY WERE OFTEN EATEN BY
CORNISH MINERS WHO SPENT THEIR
DAYS WORKING DOWN IN THE MINES.
GABRIEL'S WASHED HIS HANDS, PUT
ON HIS APRON AND HE'S READY TO
COOK.
Gabriel says I'M MAKING CORNISH PASTIES
FOR MY FRIENDS.
The narrator says AND HE'S INVITED MILLIE,
CHARLOTTE AND THEO TO TASTE ONE
OF THE MAIN INGREDIENTS BEFORE
THEY COME ROUND FOR A VERY
SPECIAL CORNISH RECIPE LATER.
Millie is around 7, with long straight blond hair in a low ponytail and wears a blue hooded sweatshirt.
Charlotte is around 7, with long reddish straight hair in a braided do and wears a purple tee and a denim jacket.
Theo is around 7, with short straight brown hair with bangs and wears a red tee and a denim shirt.
The kids open the box with the special ingredient.
The narrator says WHAT'S THAT?
Millie says CARROT?
The narrator says IT'S NOT CARROT.
Theo says MELON?
The narrator says IT'S NOT MELON EITHER.
Charlotte says IT TASTES LIKE SWEDE...
The narrator says THAT'S RIGHT, IT'S COOKED
SWEDE.
MMM, THEO'S NOT SURE.
Millie says IT'S NOT VERY NICE.
Theo says I DON'T LIKE THE TASTE OF IT.
The narrator says OH DEAR.
Charlotte says I LIKE THE TASTE, I EAT IT
OFTEN, BUT NOT TOO OFTEN.
The narrator says THAT'S GOOD, BUT CAN GABRIEL
CHANGE EVERYONE ELSE'S MINDS?
BECAUSE SWEDE'S AN IMPORTANT
INGREDIENT IN HIS CORNISH
PASTIES.
AS WELL AS SWEDE, YOU'LL ALSO
NEED POTATOES, SHREDDED COOKED
BEEF, WATER, PLAIN FLOUR,
SPRING ONIONS, MILK, BUTTER,
LARD AND BLACK PEPPER.
Gabriel says FIRST OFF, YOU MIX THE
BUTTER, THE LARD AND THE FLOUR
TOGETHER.
The narrator says JUST TIP THEM INTO THE FLOUR
AND RUB WITH YOUR FINGERS UNTIL
THE MIXTURE LOOKS LIKE LITTLE
CRUMBS.
THEN SHAKE THE BOWL TO BRING
THOSE LUMPS TO THE TOP AND GIVE
IT A LAST RUB.
Gabriel says NOW I'M GOING TO ADD SOME
WATER TO THE MIXTURE.
The narrator says AND GIVE IT A GOOD MIX TOO.
YEAH, WELL DONE.
Gabriel says I LOVE MIXING.
I QUITE LIKE MAKING MESS.
The narrator says OH I CAN SEE THAT, BUT YOU'RE
DOING WELL, GABRIEL.
Gabriel says IT'S EASIER TO USE YOUR
HANDS, AND NOW I'M TRYING TO GET
THE PASTRY TOGETHER.
The narrator says THAT'S IT.
SQUEEZE IT INTO A BALL SHAPE.
NEXT PUT THE PASTRY INTO THE
BOWL, COVER IT AND LEAVE IT TO
ONE SIDE.
NOW GABRIEL NEEDS SOME SHREDDED
COOKED BEEF THAT HIS MUM MADE
EARLIER TODAY.
HE'S THEN GOING TO ADD SPRING
ONIONS, WHICH HE'S TOPPED AND
TAILED.
Gabriel uses a pair of scissors to cut the spring onions.
Gabriel says I LOVE EATING CORNISH
PASTIES.
The narrator says REMEMBER TO BE CAREFUL WITH
THOSE SCISSORS, GABRIEL.
Gabriel says I'M PUTTING THE ONIONS INTO
THE BEEF.
AND NOW IT'S TIME FOR MY SPECIAL
INGREDIENT.
The narrator says AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT IS
DON'T YOU?
IT'S SWEDE.
SWEDE IS A ROOT VEGETABLE,
WHICH MEANS THAT THE PART WE
EAT GROWS UNDERGROUND.
SWEDES HAVE YELLOW INSIDES,
WHICH TASTE SWEET WHEN COOKED.
SWEDE CAN BE COOKED IN LOTS OF
DIFFERENT WAYS: BOILED,
STEAMED, ROASTED, OR EVEN ADDED
TO PASTIES FOR EXTRA FLAVOUR.
IT'S SAID THAT MANY YEARS AGO,
SWEDES WERE SOMETIMES USED BY
SOLDIERS TO FIRE OUT OF CANNONS
INSTEAD OF CANNONBALLS.
HOW FUNNY IS THAT?
Gabriel says NOW WE'RE GOING TO PUT THE
COOKED SWEDE INTO THE BAG.
The narrator says GABRIEL'S MUM HAS ALREADY
COOKED THE SWEDE AND SOME
POTATOES.
Gabriel says AND NOW WE'RE GOING TO
MASH IT.
The narrator says THE BEST WAY TO DO THIS IS
WITH A ROLLING PIN, THEN JUST
ADD IT TO THE BOWL OF COOKED
BEEF AND SPRING ONIONS.
GIVE IT A MIX AND GRIND IN SOME
BLACK PEPPER.
Gabriel says MIX THAT PEPPER IN.
The narrator says SPRINKLE YOUR WORKTOP WITH
FLOUR, CAREFULLY CUT THE BALL
OF PASTRY YOU MADE IN HALF.
PUT ONE HALF BACK IN THE BOWL
FOR LATER AND ROLL THE OTHER
HALF OUT NICE AND THINLY.
THEN CAREFULLY CUT OUT TWO
CIRCLES USING SOMETHING ROUND,
LIKE A PLATE.
AHH, WELL DONE, GABRIEL.
EXCELLENT.
NOW FILL EACH PASTRY CIRCLE
WITH ABOUT TWO SPOONS OF THE
FILLING, MAKING SURE YOU LEAVE
SPACE ALL AROUND THE OUTSIDE.
USE YOUR FINGERS TO DAB WATER
ALL AROUND THE EDGE.
Gabriel says WE FOLD OVER THIS SIDE AND WE
CRIMP THE PASTIES BECAUSE IT
LOOKS NICE.
CRIMPING IS PINCHING WITH THIS
HAND, THEN TWISTING OVER WITH
THE OTHER ONE.
The narrator says AH, LOOK AT THOSE SKILLS.
NOW WHEN YOU'VE MADE YOUR TWO
CORNISH PASTIES, ROLL OUT THE
SECOND PIECE OF PASTRY, CUT TWO
MORE CIRCLES, ADD THE FILLING
AND CRIMP THE EDGES LIKE
GABRIEL, THEN POP THEM ALL ONTO
BAKING PAPER ON A BAKING TRAY.
Gabriel says WE'RE GOING TO PUT A GLAZE OF
MILK ON THE PASTIES TO MAKE THEM
NICE AND GOLDEN WHEN THEY'RE
COOKED.
I THINK MY FRIENDS ARE GOING TO
LIKE EATING THEM.
MUMMY!
Mum says WOW, THEY LOOK AMAZING.
The narrator says THEN ASK A GROWN-UP TO PUT
THEM IN THE OVEN FOR YOU.
NOW, IF YOU'D LIKE TO MAKE
GABRIEL'S CORNISH PASTIES
AT HOME, ADD BUTTER AND LARD TO
PLAIN FLOUR AND RUB IT ALL
TOGETHER UNTIL THE MIXTURE
LOOKS LIKE CRUMBS.
SHAKE THE BOWL TO BRING THE
LUMPS TO THE TOP AND GIVE IT A
FINAL RUB.
THEN ADD COLD WATER AND MIX
EVERYTHING TOGETHER TO CREATE
A DOUGH.
SQUEEZE IT INTO A BALL, COVER
AND LEAVE TO ONE SIDE.
TOP AND TAIL SPRING ONIONS AND
CUT INTO SMALL PIECES.
ADD TO THE BOWL OF SHREDDED
COOKED BEEF.
PUT COOKED SWEDE
AND POTATOES INTO A BAG.
BASH WITH A ROLLING PIN AND ADD
THAT TO THE BEEF AND SPRING
ONION.
DON'T FORGET YOU CAN WASH YOUR
BAG SO YOU CAN USE IT AGAIN.
GRIND IN SOME BLACK PEPPER AND
GIVE EVERYTHING A GOOD MIX.
MIX IT, MIX IT, MIX IT.
SPRINKLE FLOUR ONTO THE
WORKTOP, CUT THE PASTRY IN
HALF, AND ROLL OUT EACH HALF
JUST LIKE THIS.
THEN CAREFULLY CUT OUT TWO
CIRCLES AND FILL THEM WITH THE
MEATY MIXTURE, MAKING SURE IT
DOESN'T GO ALL THE WAY TO THE
EDGE.
DAB SOME WATER AROUND THE EDGE
AND FOLD THE PASTRY IN HALF.
SQUEEZE AND TWIST THE EDGES
TOGETHER TO CRIMP THE PASTRY,
JUST LIKE THIS.
PUT ALL FOUR ONTO BAKING PAPER
ON A TRAY AND BRUSH WITH MILK.
THEN ASK A GROWN-UP TO PUT THEM
IN THE OVEN FOR YOU.
NOW THERE'S JUST ENOUGH TIME
FOR GABRIEL TO GET THE TABLE
READY FOR HIS SPECIAL CORNISH
MEAL.
Gabriel says WE'RE EATING PASTIES OUTSIDE
BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT PEOPLE USED
TO DO IN THE OLDEN DAYS.
Gabriel decorates his table with balloons, wooden fish, party windmills, and decorated drink jars.
(DOORBELL RINGING)
Gabriel says HERE ARE MY FRIENDS!
The narrator says WELL DONE, GABRIEL, YOUR
CORNISH THEMED TABLE LOOKS
FANTASTIC.
Gabriel's friends say HELLO, GABRIEL!
Gabriel says HI!
COME ON IN.
The narrator says HI, GUYS!
NOW EVERYONE'S WASHED THEIR
HANDS AND THEY'RE READY TO EAT.
Charlotte says WOW, THAT'S REALLY, REALLY
GOOD.
Millie says I LIKE THE FISH.
Charlotte says WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE PART
ABOUT IT?
Gabriel says I QUITE LIKE THESE, THESE
DRINKS.
Theo says I QUITE LIKE THE WINDMILLS.
Charlotte says YEAH, I REALLY LIKE THE
DRINKS, I'VE GOT SOME AT HOME.
Gabriel says WHAT DO YOU LIKE, MILLIE?
Millie says I LIKE THE FISH WHERE YOU'VE
DECORATED IT AROUND.
Gabriel says YOU ALL LIKE DIFFERENT
THINGS.
Charlotte says YEAH.
OOH, THE FOOD IS COMING.
The narrator says HERE COMES MUM WITH THE
COOKED PASTIES.
Charlotte says THANK YOU!
The narrator says GABRIEL'S CORNISH PASTIES
HAVE COOLED DOWN AND LOOK
ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS.
CHECK THAT OUT, YUM.
Charlotte says THIS PASTY LOOKS REALLY GOOD.
Gabriel says IT'S TRADITIONAL TO EAT
CORNISH PASTIES WITH YOUR HANDS,
THAT'S WHY THERE'S NO KNIVES AND
FORKS.
Charlotte says MY MUM TAUGHT ME THAT.
The narrator says EARLIER TODAY, GABRIEL'S
FRIENDS WEREN'T TOO SURE ABOUT
THE TASTE OF SWEDE.
DO YOU THINK THEY'LL CHANGE
THEIR MINDS WHEN THEY TASTE IT
IN HIS CORNISH PASTIES?
Gabriel says DO YOU LIKE IT?
Charlotte and Theo say YEAH.
Charlotte says PROPER JOB, GABRIEL.
The narrator says PROPER JOB, INDEED.
Gabriel says WHAT DO YOU THINK THE SPECIAL
INGREDIENT IS?
Charlotte says SWEDE.
Theo says MILK.
Millie says SWEDE.
Gabriel says IT IS SWEDE.
Charlotte says YAY, I GOT IT RIGHT!
I CAN DEFINITELY TASTE THE SWEDE
AND I REALLY LIKED THE...
AND I REALLY LIKED THE MEAT
INSIDE AND ALSO THE PASTRY.
The narrator says CHARLOTTE LIKES EVERYTHING.
Gabriel says I MADE IT SPECIALLY FOR YOU
BECAUSE IT'S A SPECIAL CORNISH
FOOD.
DO YOU LIKE THE TASTE OF SWEDE
IN MY CORNISH PASTIES?
Charlotte says I DIDN'T LIKE IT THAT MUCH
BEFORE, BUT NOW I REALLY DO
LIKE IT.
Theo says I REALLY LIKE IT.
Millie says WHEN IT'S MIXED WITH OTHER
TASTE IN A PASTY, I REALLY LIKE
IT.
Gabriel says THANK YOU.
The narrator says WELL DONE GABRIEL, IT LOOKS
LIKE THEY DO LIKE THE TASTE OF
SWEDE AFTER ALL.
Gabriel says THANK YOU FOR COMING TO
MY
WORLD KITCHEN.
