A narrator asks, WHOSE KITCHEN ARE
WE GOING TO TODAY?

A boy with short black hair wearing a red shirt and jeans opens a front door.

He says, HELLO, MY NAME'S OKAI,
WELCOME TO MY HOUSE.
COME IN.

Okai smiles. He walks down a hallway and into a kitchen where a bald man with a greying black beard stands.

Okai says, THIS IS MY DAD.

His dad smiles and waves.

The narrator says, HI, DAD!

Okai stands behind a table.

He says, THIS IS MY KITCHEN AND TODAY
I AM MAKING OKRA STEW BECAUSE I
LOVE IT.

The narrator says, OKAI'S DAD HAS SHOWN HIM A
VERY SPECIAL WAY TO MAKE OKRA
STEW, AND IT TASTES FANTASTIC.

Okai gathers different ingredients and places them around a cutting board.

The narrator says, OKAI'S FAMILY ARE GHANAIAN AND
COME FROM GHANA.

A colourful map of the world is displayed.

The narrator says, GHANA IS A LARGE COUNTRY IN
AFRICA.

A large red arrow points to Africa on the map.

The narrator says, WHERE THE WEATHER'S HOT FOR
MUCH OF THE YEAR.

In a timelapse, the sun rises on the horizon.

IT'S A PLACE WHERE EVERYONE
LOVES TO PARTY, SO MUSIC AND
CELEBRATION IS VERY IMPORTANT.

The narrator continues, GHANA WAS ONCE CALLED THE GOLD
COAST, THAT'S BECAUSE PEOPLE
HAVE FOUND A LOT OF GOLD THERE.
AS WELL AS GOLD, MANY OTHER
THINGS COME FROM GHANA,
INCLUDING COCO BEANS, WHICH ARE
USED TO MAKE CHOCOLATE, AND THE
VEGETABLE OKRA, WHICH IS WHAT
OKAI IS USING IN HIS STEW.

In Okai’s kitchen, he washes his hands.

The narrator says, OKAI'S WASHED HIS HANDS, PUT
ON HIS APRON AND HE'S READY TO
COOK.

Okai wears a blue apron.

He says, I'M MAKING OKRA STEW FOR MY
FRIENDS.

The narrator says, AND HE'S INVITED JENSEN, MIA,
AND SADE TO TRY ONE OF THE MAIN
INGREDIENTS BEFORE THEY COME
ROUND FOR A DELICIOUS GHANAIAN
MEAL LATER.

A piece of okra is in a box.

The narrator asks, WHAT'S THAT?

Jensen, a boy wearing a blue shirt, says, I KNOW IT'S A VEGETABLE.

Mia, a girl wearing a white shirt, says, IT'S GREEN AND IT'S GOT SEEDS
IN IT.

She looks at a piece of okra.

Sade, a girl wearing a blue shirt says, I THINK PEPPER.

The narrator says, IT'S NOT PEPPER.

Mia tries a bite of okra.

The narrator asks, WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?

Jensen tries a bite of okra and purses his lips.

Mia says, IT'S REALLY HARD.

Sade says, TASTES SOUR.

The narrator says, UH-OH.

Mia says, I MIGHT LIKE IT IN FOOD
BUT...

The narrator says, GOOD!

Mia says, …IT'S NOT VERY NICE BY ITSELF.

Jensen says, ER, THAT TASTES DISGUSTING!

The narrator says, OH, DEAR, NO ONE SEEMS TO
ENJOY THE TASTE OF RAW OKRA.
CAN OKAI CHANGE THEIR MINDS
WHEN THEY TASTE IT IN HIS
RECIPE?

A bowl of okra is on a counter.

The narrator says, YOU'LL ALSO NEED HOT PAPRIKA,
STOCK POWDER, TINNED CHOPPED
TOMATOES, BABY SPINACH LEAVES,
COOKED ROAST CHICKEN BREASTS,
TOMATO PUREE, WARM WATER, LONG
SHALLOTS, GINGER PASTE, BLACK
PEPPER, AND GARLIC CLOVES.

The ingredients appear on the counter.

In the kitchen, Okai says, THE FIRST THING I AM GOING TO
DO IS POUR THE CHOPPED TOMATOES
INTO THE DISH.

He pours a can of chopped tomatoes into a large round dish.

Okai says, NEXT I AM GOING TO PUT THE
TOMATO PUREE ONTO A SPOON AND
INTO THE DISH.

He adds a spoonful of tomato paste to the dish.

The narrator says, NICELY DONE, OKAI.

Okai adds a second spoonful of tomato puree to the dish.

He says, I'M GOING TO DO THREE SPOONS
OF GINGER.

Okai squeezes ginger paste onto his spoon.

The narrator says, THAT'S IT.
JUST ADD THE GINGER PASTE TO
THE CASSEROLE DISH.

Okai adds his ginger paste to the dish and mixes it with the chopped tomatoes and tomato puree using his spoon.

He says, I'M MIXING IT NOW.

The narrator asks, WHAT'S NEXT?

Okai says, PEEL OFF THE GARLIC.

The narrator says, JUST PEEL THE PAPERY SKIN OFF
THE GARLIC CLOVES.
IF YOU FIND THIS TRICKY ASK A
GROWN-UP TO HELP.

Okai peels the skin off a garlic glove and puts it on a plate with other peeled garlic gloves and two shallots.

Okai says, NOW, I'VE FINISHED THE GARLIC
NOW I'M GOING TO DO THE
SHALLOTS.

The narrator says, CAREFULLY CUT THE ENDS OF THE
SHALLOTS.

Okai cuts off an end of a shallot.

He says, I'M GOING TO PEEL IT.

He peels the skin off the shallot.

The narrator says, YEAH.
GREAT PEELING, OKAI.

Okai cuts and end off the other shallot, then peels it.

The narrator says, THEN POP THE SHALLOTS AND
GARLIC INTO A PLASTIC FOOD BAG
AND BASH THEM INTO SMALL PIECES
WITH A ROLLING PIN.

With the garlic and shallots in a small plastic bag, Okai mashes them using a wooden rolling pin.

The narrator says, WATCH YOUR FINGERS!

(Laughing)

The narrator says, DON'T FORGET YOU CAN ALWAYS
WASH YOUR BAG OUT TO USE IT
AGAIN LATER.

Okai tilts the bag of mashed garlic and shallots over his casserole dish.

The narrator says, THEN TIP THEM INTO THE DISH AND
HERE WE GO, MIX IT, MIX IT,
MIX IT.

Okai mixes the ingredients together in the dish.

He says, I AM GOING TO PUT THE SPINACH
ONTO THE SAUCE.

The narrator says, MAKE A LAYER OF SPINACH
LEAVES ON TOP OF EVERYTHING
ELSE.

Okai spreads spinach over the other ingredients in the dish.

The narrator says, THAT'S RIGHT, JUST LIKE THAT.

Okai says, IT'S TIME FOR MY SPECIAL
INGREDIENT.

The narrator continues, AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT IS

OKRA IS A GREEN LEAFY PLANT
WITH POINTY PODS.
THESE PODS AND THE SEEDS INSIDE

In the kitchen, Okai says, NOW, I AM GOING TO CHOP THE
OKRA.

He dumps a bowl of okra onto his countertop.

The narrator says, CAREFULLY CUT THE TOPS OFF
ALL THE OKRA.

Okai cuts a pod of okra with a pair of scissors.

He says, OKRA STEW IS MY FAVOURITE
THING TO EAT.
MADIMA IS MY GRANDMA AND SHE
LIVES IN GHANA.
MADIMA MAKES THE BEST OKRA STEW.

Okai grabs a handful of the chopped okra.

He says, NOW I AM GOING TO SPRINKLE THE
OKRA ONTO MY SPINACH AND SAUCE.

The narrator says, DAD'S COOKED AND COOLED SOME
CHICKEN FOR OKAI TO USE.

Okai uncovers a bowl of cooked chicken.

The narrator says, ADD HOT PAPRIKA.

Okai adds a spoonful of paprika to the bowl of chicken.

The narrator continues, THEN BLACK PEPPER.

Okai grinds black pepper over the bowl.

The narrator says, AND GIVE IT A
MIX.

Okai mixes the paprika and pepper with the chicken.

The narrator says, WELL DONE.
NOW TIP THE CHICKEN INTO THE
CASSEROLE DISH AND SPREAD IT
OUT.

Okai spreads the chicken over spinach and chopped okra in the casserole dish.

He says, I AM GOING TO MIX THE STOCK
POWDER IN THE WATER.

He mixes a spoonful of stock powder with water.

The narrator says, AND NOW YOU CAN GIVE IT A
GOOD STIR AND POUR IT ALL OVER
THE OTHER INGREDIENTS.

Okai pours the stock mixture over the ingredients in the casserole dish.

The narrator says, THEN ASK A GROWNUP TO PUT IT IN
THE OVEN FOR YOU.

Okai calls, DAD!

His dad joins him in the kitchen.

His dad says, WOW, THAT LOOKS AMAZING.

Okai’s dad covers the casserole dish with a lid then picks it up wearing oven mitts.

The narrator says, IF YOU WANT TO MAKE OKAI'S

The person adds three peeled garlic cloves to a plastic food bag

The person cuts the ends off a shallot.

The person peels off the shallot’s skin.

The narrator says, AND ADD THEM TO THE BAG.

The person adds the shallot to the bag and repeats the steps with a second shallot.

The narrator says, THEN GIVE THEM A GOOD BASH WITH

The person mashes the garlic and shallots with a wooden rolling pin.

Okai sets a table wearing a blue shirt.

(Doorbell ringing)

The narrator says, OH, LOOK.
OKAI'S GOT CHANGED, VERY SMART,
AND HIS TABLE LOOKS FANTASTIC.

Okai answers the door and greets Sade, Jensen and Mia. Sade waves as she steps inside.

She says, HI!

Jensen says, HI!

Mia says, HI, OKAI!

Okai says, HI, COME IN!

His friends walk in and he closes the door.

The narrator says, AND HIS FRIENDS HAVE ARRIVED.
EVERYONE'S WASHED THEIR HANDS
AND THEY'RE READY TO EAT.

Okai shows his friends to the table.

Sade says, WOW, OKAI.

Mia says, WHOA.

Jensen says, IT'S REALLY NICE.
YOU'VE REALLY PUT A LOT OF
EFFORT INTO THIS DIDN'T YOU,
OKAI?

Mia says, I LIKE THE COLOURS OF THE
TABLECLOTH.

Sade says, I LIKE THE PATTERN OF THE
TABLECLOTH AS WELL.

Jensen says, I THINK IT LOOKS FANTASTIC.

Okai says, IN GHANA WE SAY "O NI NA MI"
BEFORE WE EAT WITH OUR FRIENDS.

Mia nods.

The narrator says, AND HERE'S DAD WITH SOME
BANKU, IT'S A DUMPLING MADE OF
CORN AND CASSAVA AND IS
TRADITIONALLY EATEN IN GHANA
WITH OKRA STEW.

Okai’s dad takes the lid off the casserole dish, revealing the cooked stew.

The narrator says, WOW, THAT LOOKS VERY COLOURFUL
AND TASTY NOW IT'S COOKED, AND
ALL THOSE LOVELY FLAVOURS HAVE
MIXED TOGETHER.

Okai’s dad serves a bowl of stew.

Mia asks, WHAT'S THIS?

Okai says, OKRA STEW.

Mia says, IT LOOKS REALLY NICE.

Okai’s dad serves another bowl of stew. Okai’s friends each take a banku.

The narrator says, THE BANKU IS GOING DOWN A
TREAT.
EARLIER ON NO ONE SEEMED TO
ENJOY THE TASTE OF RAW OKRA, SO
WILL THEY CHANGE THEIR MINDS
NOW IT'S COOKED IN THE STEW?

The four friends eat the okra stew.

Okai asks, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Jensen says, OKAI, I THINK YOU PUT A LOT
OF EFFORT INTO THIS, REALLY
NICE.

Okai says, THANK YOU.

Sade says, IT TASTES LIKE WHEN MY
GRANDMA COOKS IT.

Mia says, I THINK IT'S REALLY NICE AND
I LIKE EVERYTHING THAT YOU PUT
IN IT.

Okai says, THANK YOU, MIA.

The narrator says, OH, WELL, THAT'S GREAT NEWS,
EVERYONE.

The friends continue eating their meal together.

The narrator says, SEEM TO BE ENJOYING IT.

Okai asks, WHAT DO YOU THINK MY SPECIAL
INGREDIENT IS?

Mia says, I THINK IT'S OKRA.

Jensen says, OKRA.

Sade says, I THOUGHT IT WAS OKRA AS
WELL.

Okai says, YOU ARE CORRECT.

The narrator says, THEY'RE RIGHT.

Okai asks, DO YOU LIKE THE TASTE OF OKRA
IN MY STEW?

Jensen says, YEAH, YEAH I DO.

Sade says, IT TASTES VERY NICE.

Jensen says, WHEN IT'S UNCOOKED I THINK
