Transcript: Ameliya's Trinidadian Pepper Roti
A split screen shows images of kids playing kitchenware as musical instruments.
In colourful letters, the name of the show appears between a fork and a knife. It reads "My world kitchen."
The narrator says THE NARRATOR SAYS WHOSE KITCHEN ARE
WE GOING TO TODAY?
Ameliya opens the door to her house and says HELLO, MY NAME IS AMELIYA,
WELCOME TO MY HOUSE.
COME IN.
THIS IS MY GRANDMA, INDRA.
Ameliya is around 8, with black hair tied-up, white pants and a pink T-shirt.
In his sixties with short black hair, Indra kisses Ameliya and says HI.
The narrator says HELLO, GRANDMA.
Ameliya says TODAY I'M GOING TO BE MAKING
PEPPER ROTI, BECAUSE I LIKE TO
EAT IT.
The narrator says GRANDMA HAS SHOWN AMELIYA A
SPECIAL WAY TO MAKE PEPPER
ROTI, WHICH SHE CAN DO ALL BY
HERSELF.
SOME OF AMELIYA'S FAMILY ARE
TRINIDADIAN, AND THEY COME FROM
A COUNTRY CALLED TRINIDAD AND
TOBAGO.
TRINIDAD IS AN ISLAND IN THE
CARIBBEAN SEA AND IS PART OF A
COUNTRY THAT IS MADE UP OF TWO
MAIN ISLANDS AND A FEW VERY
SMALL ONES.
An animated world map shows the location of Trinidad and Tobago.
He continues CALYPSO MUSIC IS VERY POPULAR
IN TRINIDAD, AND STEEL DRUMS
WERE INVENTED THERE.
FOOD IS ALSO IMPORTANT IN
TRINIDAD, WHERE THE DISH ROTI
IS EATEN A LOT.
ROTI CAN BE EATEN AT ANY TIME
OF THE DAY, AND COULD BE FILLED
WITH MANY DIFFERENT FOODS, LIKE
MEAT, LENTILS, OR EVEN CHEESE.
ROTI CAN ALSO BE FILLED WITH
VEGETABLES, LIKE AMELIYA IS
DOING.
AMELIYA HAS WASHED HER HANDS,
PUT ON HER APRON, AND SHE'S
READY TO COOK.
In her kitchen, Ameliya says TODAY I'M GOING TO BE MAKING
PEPPER ROTI FOR MY FRIENDS.
The narrator says AND SHE'S INVITED LILY,
ELIJAH, AND POESIE, TO TASTE
ONE OF THE INGREDIENTS BEFORE
THEY COME ROUND FOR A VERY
SPECIAL TRINIDADIAN MEAL LATER.
WHAT'S THAT?
Poesie is around 9, with long blond hair. She wears a purple T-shirt.
Poesie says IT LOOKS LIKE A LEAF.
The narrator says IT IS A LEAF.
Elijah is around 9, with a shaved head. He wears glasses and a light blue T-shirt.
Elijah says IT SMELLS LIKE NOTHING.
The narrator says WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?
Elijah says IT TASTES LIKE VEGETABLES.
Lily is around 8, with blond hair tied-up. She wears a pink shirt.
Lily says IT'S CRUNCHY.
Poesie says IT DOESN'T REALLY TASTE LIKE
ANYTHING.
Elijah says AND I THINK IT MIGHT BE A
CURRY LEAF.
The narrator says IT'S NOT A CURRY LEAF,
ELIJAH.
Elijah says I'M NOT REALLY SURE WHAT LEAF
IT IS.
Poesie says I THINK IT MIGHT BE SOME KIND
OF SALAD.
The narrator says IT CAN GO IN A SALAD, BECAUSE
IT'S A SPINACH LEAF.
Lily says I DON'T REALLY LIKE IT.
Poesie says I THINK IT MIGHT TASTE A BIT
DIFFERENT IF IT WAS COOKED.
Elijah says I REALLY LIKE VEGETABLES, SO
I REALLY DO LIKE IT.
The narrator says THAT'S GREAT, BUT NOT
EVERYONE LIKES THE TASTE.
LET'S SEE IF AMELIYA CAN CHANGE
THEIR MINDS, BECAUSE SPINACH IS
ONE OF THE INGREDIENTS IN HER
ROTI RECIPE.
AS WELL AS SPINACH, YOU'LL NEED
GRATED CHEESE, A CARROT, SALT,
BLACK PEPPER, ROASTED RED
PEPPER, SELF-RAISING FLOUR,
VEGETABLE OIL, AND WATER.
Ameliya says I'VE GOT A BOWL OF FLOUR AND
I'M GOING TO GET A PINCH OF
SALT AND PUT IT IN IT.
THAT'S IT, MAKE A HOLE IN THE
MIDDLE.
The narrator THEN, ADD VEGETABLE OIL, WHAT'S
NEXT?
Ameliya says I'M GOING TO PUT SOME WATER
IN.
AND START MIXING.
I'M TRYING TO MAKE DOUGH.
IF IT GETS A LITTLE BIT STICKY,
ADD SOME MORE FLOUR.
USUALLY WE USE OUR HANDS IN
TRINIDAD, THAT'S WHY I'M USING
MINE.
The narrator says ADD SOME MORE WATER.
MAKE THE DOUGH INTO A BALL.
Mixing dough, Ameliya says MY GRANDMA TAUGHT MY MUM HOW
TO MAKE THIS AND THEN MY MUM
TAUGHT ME HOW TO MAKE IT.
I'M JUST GOING TO WASH MY HANDS.
The narrator says COVER THE BOWL WITH A CLEAN
TEA TOWEL AND PUT IT TO ONE
SIDE.
IN ANOTHER BOWL, ADD GRATED
CARROT, CHOPPED ROASTED RED
PEPPER, AND THE GRATED CHEESE.
Ameliya says NOW, IT'S TIME FOR MY VERY
SPECIAL INGREDIENT.
The narrator says AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT IS,
DON'T YOU?
THAT'S RIGHT, SPINACH.
SPINACH IS A LEAFY FLOWERING
PLANT, AND THE LEAVES ARE THE
PART OF THE PLANT THAT WE EAT.
THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF
SPINACH.
SOME HAVE DARK GREEN CURLY
LEAVES, SOME HAVE WIDE SMOOTH
LEAVES, AND OTHERS HAVE
SLIGHTLY CRINKLY LEAVES.
SPINACH IS FULL OF THINGS THAT
ARE GOOD FOR YOU.
An animation shows a bald man with a moustache holding spinach.
He continues SOME PEOPLE THINK IT CAN GIVE
YOU STRONG BONES AND MUSCLES.
AND MANY YEARS AGO, ARTISTS
USED THE GREEN COLOUR IN
SPINACH LEAVES TO HELP THEM
MAKE GREEN INK AND PAINT.
CAREFULLY CHOP THE SPINACH AND
ADD IT TO THE BOWL.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Ameliya says I'M GOING TO PUT SOME PEPPER
IN.
The narrator says THEN MIX IT, MIX IT, MIX IT.
WHAT'S NEXT, AMELIYA?
Ameliya says I'M GOING TO DO MY DOUGH.
The narrator says SPRINKLE SOME FLOUR TO STOP
THE DOUGH STICKING.
SPLIT THE DOUGH IN HALF, ADD
SOME MORE FLOUR, THEN ROLL ONE
HALF OUT WITH A ROLLING PIN.
Ameliya says I FIRST LEARNED TO ROLL A
ROTI IN TRINIDAD.
TRINIDAD IS A VERY HOT PLACE AND
IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY.
NOW, I'M GOING TO CUT THE ROTI
HALFWAY UP.
The narrator says CAREFUL WITH THOSE SCISSORS.
AND PAINT IT WITH VEGETABLE
OIL.
THEN TAKE HALF OF YOUR YUMMY
FILLING AND SPRINKLE IT OVER
THE ROLLED DOUGH.
Ameliya says WE'RE GOING TO START ROLLING.
I'M ROLLING IT UP INTO A CONE
AND THEN I'M PINCHING THIS EDGE
AND TUCKING IT INSIDE.
I THINK MY FRIENDS ARE GOING TO
LIKE THIS.
The narrator says STAND THE CONE UP LIKE THIS
AND PUSH THE POINTY END DOWN TO
FLATTEN IT.
Ameliya says I'M PUTTING SOME FLOUR ON IT,
SO IT DOESN'T STICK.
The narrator says AND GIVE IT ANOTHER ROLL
UNTIL IT'S NICE AND FLAT.
PAINT ON SOME MORE VEGETABLE
OIL.
Ameliya says WHEN YOU OIL IT, YOU HAVE TO
GET IT ALL OVER THE EDGES.
The narrator says THEN, USE YOUR ROLLING PIN TO
CAREFULLY LIFT YOUR ROTI ONTO
BAKING PAPER, ON AN OILED
BAKING SHEET.
THEN DO THE SAME AGAIN WITH THE
OTHER HALF OF YOUR DOUGH, AND
THE REST OF YOUR FILLING.
POP IT ONTO THE BAKING SHEET,
THEN ASK A GROWN UP TO PUT IT
IN THE OVEN FOR YOU.
Ameliya says GRANDMA, PLEASE CAN YOU PUT
THIS IN THE OVEN?
Indra says OH, AMELIYA, THAT LOOKS
DELICIOUS.
Ameliya says THANK YOU.
The narrator says I AGREE, WELL DONE, AMELIYA.
IF YOU'D LIKE TO MAKE AMELIYA'S
PEPPER ROTI AT HOME, FIRST ADD
A PINCH OF SALT TO FLOUR, MAKE
A HOLE IN THE MIDDLE, ADD
VEGETABLE OIL AND WATER.
AND USE YOUR HANDS TO MIX IT
TOGETHER.
ADD MORE WATER AND FLOUR IF YOU
NEED TO, UNTIL YOU'VE MADE THE
DOUGH INTO THE SHAPE OF A BALL.
COVER WITH A CLEAN TEA TOWEL
AND PUT IT TO ONE SIDE.
ADD GRATED CARROT AND CHOPPED
ROASTED RED PEPPER TO GRATED
CHEESE, THEN CAREFULLY CHOP THE
SPINACH AND TIP IT INTO THE
BOWL.
ADD BLACK PEPPER AND MIX IT,
MIX IT, MIX IT.
SPRINKLE SOME FLOUR AND SPLIT
THE DOUGH IN HALF.
THEN ROLL ONE HALF OUT WITH A
ROLLING PIN.
CAREFULLY MAKE A CUT UP TO THE
MIDDLE OF THE ROTI AND PAINT
IT WITH OIL.
SPRINKLE HALF OF YOUR COLOURFUL
FILLING ON THE TOP, FOLD OVER
THE EDGE OF THE ROTI, AND ROLL
IT UP TO MAKE A CONE SHAPE.
NEATLY TUCK THE EDGE INTO THE
BOTTOM, JUST LIKE THIS.
STAND THE CONE UP AND PUSH THE
POINTY END DOWN TO FLATTEN IT.
GIVE IT ANOTHER ROLL, UNTIL
IT'S NICE AND FLAT.
PAINT ON SOME MORE VEGETABLE
OIL, THEN USE A ROLLING PIN TO
LIFT THE ROTI ONTO BAKING PAPER
ON AN OILED BAKING SHEET.
NOW USE THE REST OF YOUR
INGREDIENTS TO MAKE A SECOND
ROTI.
AND ASK A GROWNUP TO PUT THEM
IN THE OVEN FOR YOU.
NOW, THAT'S DONE, IT'S TIME FOR
AMELIYA TO GET HER TABLE READY
FOR HER DELICIOUS TRINIDADIAN
MEAL.
Ameliya says I'M VERY EXCITED, BECAUSE I
HAVE A TRINIDADIAN SURPRISE FOR
MY FRIENDS.
(doorbell ringing)
Ameliya says YAY.
The narrator says CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT THE
SURPRISE IS, AND THE TABLE
LOOKS FABULOUS.
Ameliya opens the front door.
Friends say HI, AMELIYA!
Ameliya says HI, GUYS, COME IN.
The narrator says EVERYONE'S WASHED THEIR
HANDS, AND THEY'RE READY TO
EAT.
They go to the back yard.
Poesie says WOW, THANK YOU, AMELIYA.
Lily says THIS IS VERY COLOURFUL.
Ameliya says WHAT DO YOU THINK OF MY TABLE
GUYS?
Elijah says I LIKE HOW YOU DONE THIS
AMELIYA, IT'S VERY NICE.
Ameliya says I LOVE THE DECORATION.
Lily says I LOVE IT.
Ameliya says THANKS.
The narrator says WELL DONE, AMELIYA.
Ameliya says ARE YOU READY FOR MY
SURPRISE?
Friends say YES.
(steel drums playing)
The narrator says IT'S THOMAS, AND HE'S PLAYING
CALYPSO MUSIC ON A TRADITIONAL
STEEL DRUM.
(applauding)
Lily says I LOVE THE TUNE OF THE MUSIC.
Elijah says AMELIYA, IS THAT A STEEL
DRUM?
Ameliya says YES, IT IS.
THANKS, THOMAS.
BYE.
Friends say BYE.
The narrator says ALL THAT TRADITIONAL
TRINIDADIAN CALYPSO MUSIC HAS
MADE EVERYONE HUNGRY.
AND HERE'S GRANDMA WITH THE
COOKED AND SLIGHTLY COOLED
ROTI.
THEY'RE GOLDEN AND DELICIOUS.
AND GRANDMA HAS MADE TOMATO
CHOKA TO GO WITH THEM.
Poesie says WHAT HAVE YOU MADE?
Ameliya says THIS IS ROTI.
Poesie says IT LOOKS REALLY NICE.
The narrator says EARLIER TODAY, AMELIYA'S
FRIENDS DIDN'T ALL LIKE THE
TASTE OF FRESH SPINACH.
Poesie says IT LOOKS REALLY, REALLY NICE.
The narrator says DO YOU THINK THEY'LL LIKE IT
IN HER COOKED PEPPER ROTI?
Elijah says IT TASTES SO GOOD.
Poesie says IT'S REALLY NICE.
Lily says I LOVE IT, AMELIYA.
The narrator says GREAT.
Ameliya says WHAT DO YOU THINK MY SPECIAL
INGREDIENT IS?
Friends say SPINACH.
The narrator says THAT'S RIGHT, SPINACH!
Ameliya says WHAT DO YOU THINK OF SPINACH
NOW IT'S IN MY ROTI?
Lily says I LOVE IT, I DIDN'T LIKE IT
WHEN IT WASN'T COOKED.
Elijah says I REALLY WANT SOME MORE, IT
WAS DELICIOUS.
Lily says YEAH, I WOULD LOVE SOME MORE.
The narrator says OH, FANTASTIC, AMELIYA.
Elijah says I COULD EAT THIS ALL DAY.
Lily says YEAH.
(laughing)
The narrator says THAT'S BRILLIANT.
IT LOOKS LIKE EVERYONE DOES
LIKE THE TASTE OF SPINACH AFTER
ALL.
Ameliya says THANK YOU FOR COMING TO
MY
WORLD KITCHEN.
