A narrator says, WHOSE KITCHEN
ARE WE GOING TO TODAY?
A girl opens a door with a wreath on it. She wears her light brown hair pulled away from her face. The girl wears a white tee-shirt with a pattern of pink flowers across the top. Behind her in a foyer is a tall decorated Christmas tree.
Tilly says, HI, MY NAME IS TILLY.
WELCOME TO MY HOUSE.
COME IN.
THIS IS MY DAD, ALAN.
Alan says, HIYA.
The narrator says, HI, DAD.
Tilly says, AND TODAY, I'M GOING TO BE
MAKING CHRISTMAS COOKIES CALLED BRUNSLI.
The narrator says, TILLY'S DAD HAS SHOWN
HER HOW TO MAKE DELICIOUS BRUNSLI
BISCUITS FOR HER FRIENDS.
TILLY'S DAD IS SWISS, AND HE
COMES FROM SWITZERLAND.
An animated red arrow points to Switzerland on a map.
The narrator says, SWITZERLAND IS A SMALL
COUNTRY IN THE CONTINENT OF EUROPE.
SWITZERLAND IS HOME TO BEAUTIFUL
SCENERY, INCLUDING SOME OF THE TALLEST
MOUNTAINS IN EUROPE. THERE IS A LOT OF
SNOW IN WINTERTIME.
Skiers slide down a snowy hill.
[Jingle bells ring]
The narrator says, AND THE PEOPLE
WHO LIVE THERE ENJOY WINTER
SPORTS AND PASTIMES, SUCH AS SKIING
AND TOBOGGANING.
CHOCOLATE HAS BEEN MADE IN
SWITZERLAND FOR MANY YEARS.
AND THE SWISS PEOPLE EAT MORE
CHOCOLATE THAN ANYWHERE ELSE IN
THE WORLD.
[Upbeat music plays]
Tilly washes her hands.
[Water splashes]
The narrator says, TILLY HAS WASHED HER
HANDS, PUT ON HER APRON, AND SHE'S
READY TO COOK.
Tilly says, I'M MAKING BRUNSLI BISCUITS
FOR MY FRIENDS.
Tilly’s friends wave as they are introduced. Amelia wears her curly dark brown hair parted in the middle and brushed away from her face. Lucie wears a bow in her long blonde hair. Euan wears his brown hair short.
The narrator says, AND SHE'S INVITED
AMELIA, LUCIE, AND EUAN TO TASTE
ONE OF THE MAIN INGREDIENTS BEFORE
THEY COME ROUND TO EAT HER
SPECIAL SWISS BISCUITS LATER.
WHAT'S THAT?
Lucie says, IT'S LOTS OF BROWN BITS.
Amelia says, I THINK IT'S SOME SEEDS.
Euan says, IT LOOKS LIKE TINY SPECKS.
Lucie says, IT LOOKS A BIT LIKE SOIL.
The narrator says, IT'S NOT SOIL.
WHAT DOES IT SMELL LIKE?
Amelia says, I THINK IT SMELLS
LIKE PEPPER.
The narrator says, IT'S NOT PEPPER.
WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?
Amelia says, I THINK IT MIGHT BE A SPICE.
The narrator says, GOOD GUESS, AMELIA.
IT'S GROUND NUTMEG, AND YOU
SHOULD ONLY TRY A SMALL AMOUNT
FOR THIS SPECIAL TASTE TEST.
Euan says, IT'S REALLY HARD TO DESCRIBE.
Lucie says, I THINK I REALLY LIKE THE TASTE.
The narrator says, THAT'S GOOD.
Amelia says, I DON'T LIKE THE TASTE.
Euan says, IT'S A REALLY HORRIBLE TASTE.
The narrator laughs and says, OH, DEAR.
NOT EVERYONE LIKES THE TASTE.
CAN TILLY CHANGE THEIR MINDS?
BECAUSE NUTMEG IS AN IMPORTANT
INGREDIENT IN HER RECIPE.
Ingredients appear as the narrator introduces them.
The narrator says, YOU'LL ALSO NEED DARK
CHOCOLATE, GROUND ALMONDS, AN
EGG, GROUND CINNAMON, CASTER
SUGAR, FLOUR, GROUND CLOVES,
AND WATER.
Tilly says, FIRST OF ALL, YOU POUR THE
CASTER SUGAR INTO THE GROUND ALMONDS.
Tilly pours the sugar into a pink bowl. She stirs the sugar and almonds together.
[Thunking, scraping]
MY DAD TAUGHT ME TO
MAKE THIS RECIPE. MY MUM AND DAD
ARE GREAT COOKS.
The narrator says, GIVE IT A GOOD MIX
AND MAKE SURE NOBODY EATING THIS
IS ALLERGIC TO ALMONDS.
Tilly says, NOW, I NEED TO GET SOME
CHOCOLATE AND BREAK IT UP INTO
LITTLE PIECES.
[Snapping]
The narrator says, TILLY'S USING DARK
CHOCOLATE. MMM, IT LOOKS YUMMY.
THEN GRATE YOUR CHOCOLATE INTO
SMALL PIECES. GO ON, TILLY.
GRATE IT, GRATE IT, GRATE IT!
Tilly turns a lever on a grating machine.
[Grating]
Tilly says, IN SWITZERLAND, PEOPLE
EAT A LOT OF CHOCOLATE.
The narrator says, USE A FORK TO GET THE
GRATED CHOCOLATE OUT OF THE GRATER.
GREAT WORK, TILLY.
ADD THE CHOCOLATE TO THE OTHER
INGREDIENTS, ALONG WITH GROUND
CINNAMON AND GROUND CLOVES.
Tilly says, AND MIX IT ALL UP.
The narrator says, MIX IT, MIX IT, MIX IT.
Tilly stirs her ingredients together.
Tilly says, NOW, IT'S TIME FOR MY VERY
SPECIAL INGREDIENT.
The narrator asks, AND YOU KNOW WHAT
THAT IS, DON'T YOU?
IT'S GROUND NUTMEG.
A NUTMEG TREE HAS GREEN LEAVES,
GROWS YELLOW FLOWERS AND SMALL,
PEAR-SHAPED FRUIT.
INSIDE EACH FRUIT IS A SHINY
SEED COVERED WITH RED THREADS.
THESE ARE DRIED IN THE SUN, AND
THE THREADS ARE REMOVED TO
REVEAL THE NUTMEG SEED.
THIS IS THEN GROUND AND USED TO
ADD A SWEET TASTE TO LOTS OF
DIFFERENT RECIPES.
IT HAS A STRONG, SPICY SMELL
THAT MAKES IT A SPECIAL INGREDIENT
IN MANY CHRISTMAS DISHES.
Tilly says, NOW, I NEED THREE TWISTS
OF NUTMEG.
The narrator says, GRIND IT, GRIND IT, GRIND IT!
[Banging]
The narrator says, THEN CRACK AN EGG,
CHECK IT FOR SHELL, AND POUR IT ONTO
A PLATE. TRAP THE YOLK IN AN EGGCUP
AND TIP THE WHITE INTO A BOWL.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Tilly puts down a bowl.
[Thunk]
Tilly says, I'M GOING TO PUT THE
EGG WHITE INTO MY MIXTURE.
I'M USING MY HANDS NOW TO GET
THE MIXTURE TOGETHER.
The narrator says, SQUEEZE IT, SQUEEZE IT,
SQUEEZE IT, USING YOUR HANDS
TO MAKE YOUR BISCUIT DOUGH.
Tilly says, THIS IS THE REALLY FUN BIT.
The narrator says, SQUEEZE IT IN TO A BALL
AND DON'T FORGET TO WASH YOUR HANDS
AFTER TOUCHING RAW EGG. WHAT'S NEXT?
Tilly says, I'M SPRINKLING MY
GROUND ALMONDS SO THAT MY
BISCUIT DOUGH DOESN'T STICK.
The narrator says, GOOD IDEA, TILLY.
THEN COVER THE DOUGH WITH
GROUND ALMONDS AND GIVE IT A
ROLL WITH A ROLLING PIN, JUST
LIKE THIS.
KEEP SPRINKLING AND ROLLING THE
DOUGH UNTIL IT'S NICE AND FLAT.
Tilly says, NOW, I'M GOING TO USE MY
CUTTER TO MAKE THE BISCUITS.
I THINK MY FRIENDS WILL LIKE
THIS RECIPE.
Tilly pushes a snowflake-shaped cookie cutter into the dough. She places each cookie on a baking tray.
The narrator says, NOW, PLACE THEM ON
BAKING PAPER ON A BAKING TRAY.
THEY LOOK LIKE CHOCOLATE
SNOWFLAKES, TILLY.
WHEN YOU'VE USED UP ALL THE
DOUGH, ASK A GROWNUP TO HELP YOU.
Tilly calls, DAD, CAN YOU COME AND
PUT THESE IN THE OVEN?
Alan puts two baking trays in the oven.
The narrator says, WHAT'S NEXT, TILLY?
Tilly says, I'M GOING TO MAKE THE ICING.
Tilly puts a bowl on a cutting board.
[Thunk]
The narrator says, ADD COLD WATER TO
ICING SUGAR.
Tilly says, MIX, MIX, MIX.
The narrator says, THAT'S IT, TILLY.
Tilly says, IT NEEDS TO BE NICE AND RUNNY.
The narrator says, HERE COMES TILLY'S
SISTER WITH THE COOKED AND
COOLED BISCUITS.
A girl with long curly brown hair and glasses places a baking tray in front of Tilly.
Tilly says, THANK YOU.
THIS IS MY SISTER, BELLA.
Bella says, HI!
The narrator says, HI, BELLA!
Tilly gives Bella a spoon.
Tilly says, HERE'S YOUR SPOON.
NOW, LET'S DRIBBLE IT ON.
Tilly and Bella dribble runny white icing on the brown cookies.
The narrator says, DRIBBLE THE RUNNY
ICING OVER THE BISCUITS.
IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE NEAT.
THEN LEAVE THEM TO DRY.
AH, WELL DONE, TILLY.
Tilly holds up a cookie.
Tilly says, THIS ONE'S ESPECIALLY FOR ME.
The narrator says, AND IF YOU'D LIKE
TO MAKE TILLY'S SWISS BRUNSLI BISCUITS
AT HOME, ADD CASTER SUGAR TO
GROUND ALMONDS AND GIVE IT A MIX.
SNAP DARK CHOCOLATE INTO SMALL
PIECES. THEN GRATE IT...
AND TIP IT INTO THE BOWL.
ADD SOME GROUND CINNAMON,
GROUND CLOVES, AND MIX IT, MIX
IT, MIX IT.
THEN GRIND IN SOME NUTMEG.
CRACK AN EGG INTO A MUG.
CHECK IT FOR SHELL. THEN
CAREFULLY TIP IT ONTO A PLATE.
TRAP THE YOLK INTO AN EGGCUP
AND TIP THE WHITE INTO A CLEAN BOWL.
DON'T FORGET TO WIPE YOUR HANDS
AFTER HANDLING RAW EGG.
TIP IT INTO THE BOWL WITH THE
OTHER INGREDIENTS AND-- YOU'VE
GUESSED IT-- MIX IT, MIX IT, MIX IT!
USE YOUR HANDS TO BRING ALL OF
THE INGREDIENTS TOGETHER INTO A
BALL. SPRINKLE THE WORKTOP WITH
GROUND ALMONDS AND COVER THE
DOUGH WITH THEM, TOO.
USE YOUR ROLLING PIN TO FLATTEN
THE DOUGH AND ROLL IT OUT.
THEN USE A COOKIE CUTTER TO CUT
OUT THE BISCUIT SHAPES.
PUT THEM ON BAKING PAPER ON A
BAKING TRAY.
THEN RE-ROLL THE LEFTOVER
DOUGH AND DO THE SAME AGAIN
UNTIL YOU'VE USED IT ALL UP.
GIVE YOUR HANDS ONE LAST WIPE
AND ASK A GROWNUP TO PUT THE
COOKIES INTO THE OVEN FOR YOU.
ADD COLD WATER TO ICING SUGAR
AND GIVE IT A GOOD MIX.
ONCE YOUR BISCUITS ARE COOKED
AND COOLED, DRIBBLE THE ICING
ALL OVER THEM AND LEAVE IT TO
DRY. DELICIOUS.
NOW, THERE'S JUST ENOUGH TIME
FOR TILLY TO GET THE TABLE AND
CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS READY.
WOW. LOOK AT THOSE COLOURS. LOVELY.
Tilly puts a vase filled with white flowers on a table.
Tilly says, THESE ARE EDELWEISS FLOWERS,
THE NATIONAL FLOWER OF SWITZERLAND.
The narrator says, OOH, EDELWEISS.
[Doorbell rings]
Tilly says, OOH, THAT'S MY FRIENDS!
The narrator says, WHAT A BEAUTIFUL
SPARKLY TREE. AND ALL THOSE
DECORATIONS ARE MAKING ME FEEL
VERY CHRISTMAS-Y.
Tilly opens the door.
[Door closes]
Tilly says, HI, GUYS!
Amelia, Lucie and Euan say, HI, TILLY!
Tilly says, COME IN.
The narrator says, NOW, EVERYONE'S
WASHED THEIR HANDS, AND THEY'RE
READY TO EAT.
Tilly asks, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF MY
DECORATIONS?
Euan says, WOW.
THEY'RE SUPER COOL.
Amelia says, I LOVE THE CHRISTMAS TREE
BEST OF ALL.
Tilly says, THANK YOU.
Euan says, IT FEELS REALLY CHRISTMAS-Y.
Tilly says, THANK YOU. DAD, CAN YOU
BRING THE BISCUITS, PLEASE?
The narrator says, HERE COMES TILLY'S
DAD WITH THE FINISHED BISCUITS.
Alan says, HERE WE GO.
Alan places a two-tier white serving dish filled with cookies on the table. Alan puts a cookie a plate.
[Clink]
The children cheer, YAY!
The narrator says, THEY LOOK DELICIOUS,
AND THE ICING HAS GONE HARD AND SHINY.
EARLIER TODAY, TILLY'S FRIENDS
WEREN'T ALL SURE ABOUT THE
TASTE OF NUTMEG.
DO YOU THINK THEY'LL CHANGE
THEIR MINDS NOW THEY'RE TASTING
IT IN TILLY'S BISCUITS?
Tilly asks, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF
MY BISCUITS?
Lucie says, THEY'RE REALLY NICE.
Tilly says, THANK YOU.
Amelia says, I THINK THEY'RE DELICIOUS.
Euan says, THEY'RE NICE, AND
THEY'RE ALSO VERY CRUNCHY, TOO.
The narrator says, EVERYONE'S TUCKING IN...
AND HAVING ANOTHER. YUM.
Tilly asks, WHAT DO YOU THINK THE
SPECIAL INGREDIENT IS?
Lucie asks, IS IT PEPPER?
Euan asks, IS IT SPICES?
Tilly says, IT WAS NUTMEG.
DO YOU LIKE THE NUTMEG NOW IT'S
COOKED IN MY RECIPE?
Euan says, IT'S MUCH BETTER NOW.
Tilly says, THANK YOU.
The narrator says, WELL DONE, TILLY.
EVERYONE LOVES THE TASTE OF
NUTMEG AFTER ALL.
