(Music playing)
The boys train in the sumo wrestling circle.
Camille says, YESTERDAY, HEAD COACH SENSEI TESTED THE BOYS' REACTIONS WITH SOME FISHING WITH A CATCH.
The boys chase fish in a shallow stream.
Reef says, THEY ARE RAPID!
Sol shouts, THEY'RE THERE.
Camille continues, IT WAS BY HAND.

(Shouting)

Franc and Reef wrestle in the ring.
(Sensei shouting)
(Music playing)
The boys put on white mawashi cloth over their t-shirts and shorts.
Camille says, WITH THE CRUNCH TIME OF A SUMO TOURNAMENT AGAINST THE LOCALS JUST A COUPLE OF DAYS AWAY, WILL THEY HEED KARIM AND SENSEI'S WISE WORDS?
Sol and Franc sweep the sand in the ring with long brooms.
Sensei and Karim stand inside the circle. Sensei has shaved grey hair and wears glasses. Karim has short curly dark hair. He wears a dark shirt with white stripes.
Karim says, 'MORNING, BOYS-- TODAY IS ALL ABOUT LEG STRENGTH, AND OF COURSE, YOUR ENDURANCE. SO YOU BETTER BE READY TO EMBRACE THE PAIN.
(Sensei speaking Japanese)
The translator says, IT'S IMPORTANT TO ALMOST IMAGINE YOURSELF AS A TREE, AND IMAGINE YOUR LEGS LIKE THE ROOTS OF A TREE, SO YOU WANT TO GET THEM NICE AND LOW, LIKE YOU'RE STUCK IN THE GROUND.
Camille narrates, THE SKILL THE BOYS ARE PRACTICING IS CALLED SHIRYASHI, AND IT'S ALL ABOUT SLIDING THE FEET AND KEEPING A LOW CENTRE OF GRAVITY. FRANC AND SOL BOTH BENEFIT FROM SOME EXTRA TUITION FROM SENSEI.
Sol and Franc walk with their legs bent and spread wide.
(Sensei speaking Japanese)
The translator says, DON'T LIFT YOUR BIG TOE UP, KEEP YOUR TOES FLAT TO THE GROUND.
Franc says, I WAS QUITE UNSURE ON IT, BUT WHEN SENSEI TOOK ME ASIDE, AND HE TOLD ME TO ADJUST MY TOES, TO KEEP MY ARMS TUCKED IN MORE, IT ALL KIND OF CLICKED.
Camille says, YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING WHERE REEF IS. WELL, HE'S HAD TO SIT OUT OF TRAINING TODAY DUE TO AN UNEXPECTED BOUT OF ILLNESS.
Reef says, YEAH, I'M GUTTED. I'M FEELING REAL ROUGH. BIG HEADACHE, SICK, NOT NICE.
Camille narrates, WITH FRANC AND SOL BUSY TRAINING IT'S TIME FOR ME TO GIVE KARIM SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.
(Pop music playing)
Karim takes out a phone. He dances.
Karim says, LOVE THIS ONE. OH, IT'S CAMILLE. FANCY THAT.
Camille is on the phone’s screen. She has long brown hair.
Camille says, YOU'VE BEEN IN JAPAN FOR A FEW DAYS NOW, SO I DON'T MEAN TO GET GRAPHIC BUT HAVE YOU BEEN TO THE SQUATTY POTTY? I KNOW YOU GET FUNNY ABOUT DOING HOLIDAY POOPS OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOME, BUT IT STINKS TO ME LIKE YOU NEED TO MAKE A TRIP TO THE BATHROOM. JAPANESE TOILETS ARE GOING TO BLOW YOU AWAY, YOU'RE GOING TO LOVE IT.
(Karim laughing)
Karim asks, WHY AM I GETTING SENT TO A TOILET? WHY?
(Music playing)
Karim slides a door open and steps into a washroom.
Karim says, THIS IS NICE.
A toilet seat lifts.
Karim says, HOW DID IT DO THAT? LET'S CHECK OUT THE COMFORT.
Karim starts to sit, then stops.
Karim says, WAIT A SECOND! NOT FALLING FOR THAT ONE, CAMILLE. I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE LIKE.
Karim touches the toilet seat with his hands.
Karim says, THAT'S HOT, WHY IS IT SO HOT? I DO THAT MYSELF. WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE ALL THOSE BUTTONS? HOW COMPLICATED IS IT TO GO TO THE TOILET? I WONDER WHAT THIS BUTTON DOES. OH, WHAT'S THAT?
Karim bends over the toilet. A tube comes out. The tube shoots water upward and hits Karim’s face.
(Spluttering)
Karim shouts, STOP!
(Laughing)
Karim says, WELL, THAT'S MY SHOWER FOR THE DAY. WELCOME TO JAPAN AND ITS AMAZING REFRESHING TOILETS.
(Music playing)
Camille narrates, KARIM MIGHT BE SOAKED, BUT THERE'S MORE WATER TO COME. AFTER THE SESSION AT THE DOJO, HE AND SENSEI ARE TAKING THE BOYS TO THE HILLS ABOVE SHIRITORI FOR SOME OUTDOORS TRAINING.
Water rushes over rocks. All the boys wear blue life vests and helmets over black wetsuits.
Camille says, THE BOYS ARE ABOUT TO TAKE ON SOMETHING CALLED "SHOWER WALKING" WITH THEIR HOSTS, SHOUEI, HAYATO, AND KOUYOU.
(Cheering)
Shouei, Hayato and Kouyou body surf the rapids.
Camille says, AS THEIR HOSTS ARE DEMONSTRATING, SHOWER WALKING STARTS LIKE THIS-- WHEEE! AND ENDS LIKE THIS-- STOMP, STOMP, STOMP UP A VERY SLIPPERY SLOPE.
One of the boys walks through the water, against the flow of the rapids.
Karim asks, SENSEI, WHAT ARE WE DOING TODAY?
(Sensei speaking Japanese)
The narrator says, WE'RE DOING SHOWER WALKING. YOU'RE GOING TO WALK FROM THE BOTTOM DOWN THERE, ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE TOP. WE WANT YOU TO THE PICK THE HARDEST PATH AND REALLY USE YOUR LEG MUSCLES.
Karim says, TODAY I THOUGHT I WOULD SHOW YOU HOW IT'S DONE, AND I'M GETTING INVOLVED! THAT'S GOOD NEWS, RIGHT?
Camille says, NOW THAT REALLY IS A SURPRISE.
Franc says, REMEMBER TO TAKE THE HARDER ROUTE.
Karim says, I'LL TAKE THE HARDER ROUTE. I'M GOING TO BE GOING FIRST, BECAUSE I'M YOUR LEADER. I'M YOU'RE MENTOR, AND WE'RE THE BOYS' TEAM! CAN I GET A "BOYS, BOYS!"
The boys look at Karim.
Karim says, THEY'RE MEAN TO ME, YOU KNOW, SENSEI.
Sensei looks away.
Karim says, I'LL GO.
Karim wades into the water.
Camille says, OH, I CAN'T WATCH!
Karim sits in the water.
Karim says, OH, MY BUM'S COLD!
Camille says, NAH, ONLY KIDDING, THIS IS BOUND TO BE GOOD.
Karim slides down the rock and into the rapids.
(Yelping)
Franc says, THAT LOOKED PAINFUL.
(Laughing)
Karim moves down the river. Water splashes around him.
(Shouting)
Sensei laughs and claps.
Camille says, EVEN SENSEI ENJOYED THAT.
Sol says, THAT LOOKS SO GOOD!
Karim stands up and raises his arms.
(Cheering)
Camille says, I DON'T KNOW WHY YOU'RE CHEERING, KARIM. THAT'S THE EASY BIT!
(Music playing)
Karim says, REMEMBER, CHANNEL YOUR INNER SUMO.
Camille says, IT'S THE BOYS' TURN. FIRST UP, OR SHOULD I SAY "DOWN AND THEN BACK UP" IS FRANC.
Franc rides the rapids.
Karim and Sol shout, GO FRANC!
Franc says, THE SCARY THING WAS THAT THERE WAS A LOT OF ROCKS STICKING OUT.
Franc spins in the water.
Franc cries, WHOA!
Karim says, HE DID A 360!
Franc says, I DIDN'T DO IT ON PURPOSE, BUT I HAPPENED AND IT WAS REALLY FUN.
(Cheering)
Camille narrates, FRANC'S NOT ONLY GOT TO CLIMB THE ROCKS, HE'S GOT TO USE THE SHIRYASHI TECHNIQUE.
Franc walks back through the water with bent legs.
Franc says, IT WAS VERY HARD TO GET BACK UP.
Camille says, IT'S A REAL TEST OF CORE STRENGTH, WITH THE SQUATTING POSITION PUTTING EXTRA PRESSURE ON HIS QUADRICEPS, THE ADDUCTOR MAGNUS MUSCLES ON THE THIGHS, AND OF COURSE, THE GLUTEUS MAXIMUS.
(Grunting)
Franc says, YOU HAD TO FOCUS ON YOUR SQUATS.
Karim shouts, YES, FRANC!
Franc says, AND TRY NOT TO FALL OVER.
Franc slips in the water.
Karim says, WHOA, NEARLY DOWN! IT GETS A BIT STEEPER AND THE WATER FALLS HEAVIER. HANDS OFF THE GROUND IF YOU CAN.
Franc says, YEAH, I USED MY HANDS A COUPLE OF TIMES.
Karim says, IT GETS HARDER HERE. AH, SEE!
Franc climbs over rocks.
Franc says, I'D LIKE TO SAY I DID WELL, BUT I'M NOT SURE.
Water rushes over the rocks.
(Music playing)
Camille says, IT'S SOL'S TURN.
Karim taps Sol’s helmet. Sol smiles. He slides through the water.
Sol shouts, WHOA!
(Shrieking)
Karim says, AH, HE'S LOVING IT.
Camille says, EITHER THAT OR HE'S SCREAMING IN ABSOLUTE TERROR.
(Shrieking)
(Laughing)
Sol says, WHEN I WAS SLIDING DOWN, IT WAS REALLY DIFFICULT TO KEEP CONTROL, BECAUSE YOU WERE GOING ALL OVER THE PLACE.
Sol rushes through the water.
(Squealing)
Camille says, WONDER IF HE'LL ENJOY GOING UP AS MUCH.
(Music playing)
Sol climbs back through the water. He holds his arms bent at his sides, with his hands up.
Karim says, SOL IS REALLY CHANNELING HIS INNER SUMO. GOT THE HANDS ON AND EVERYTHING, WITH THE SQUATS.
Sol says, I HAD TO USE A LOT OF LEG STRENGTH TO BE ABLE TO COME BACK UP USING THE SUMO POSITION.
Sol slips and his legs move into the splits.
Karim says, HE'S NOW IN THE SPLITS! THIS BOY IS TOO FLEXIBLE FOR HIS OWN GOOD.
Sol says, IT DIDN'T HURT, IT WAS WEIRD.
Sol continues walking through the rapids.
Franc shouts, GO ON, SOL!
Karim says, COME ON, SOL, BIT STICKY, BE CAREFUL!
Camille says, SOL IS DOING REALLY WELL. OH, HE MIGHT MAKE IT!
Sol slips.
(Group gasping)
Camille says, OH NO, SPOKE TOO SOON.
(Groaning)
Sol says, I THOUGHT THE CURRENT WAS A BIT STRONG. IT WAS A PROBLEM BECAUSE I'M QUITE LIGHT.
Karim says, ONE THING ABOUT SOL IS HE WILL NEVER GIVE UP.
Sol reaches the top.
(Clapping)
Karim shouts, NICE WORK.
Camille says, WALKING UP THE WATERFALL WAS ONLY THE WARM-UP, IT'S TIME TO GET COMPETITIVE.
Karim says, IN SUMO WRESTLING, IT'S NOT JUST TO STRENGTHEN YOUR SQUATS. THERE'S ALSO HOW LONG YOU CAN HOLD IT, YOUR ENDURANCE. ME AND SENSEI HERE HAVE ANOTHER CHALLENGE UP ON OUR WET SUIT SLEEVE. SENSEI, WHAT'S NEXT?
(Sensei speaking Japanese)
The translator says, THE NEXT ACTIVITY IS A SUMO SQUAT. I'M SURE YOUR LEGS ARE GOING TO
START BURNING, YOU'RE GOING TO FEEL IT, BUT WHOEVER HOLDS IT LONGEST IS GOING TO BE THE WINNER.
Karim says, OH, SORRY, I FORGOT TO MENTION SOMETHING. IT'S GOING TO BE UNDER THAT WATERFALL.
Karim points to a waterfall. White water churns as it falls over the rocks.
Franc asks, THAT ONE?
Karim says, YEP.
Sol says, WHAT?
Franc I THOUGHT THE SHOWER WALKING WAS SCARY, BUT THIS IS GOING TO BE A LOT HARDER.
Camille narrates, SQUATTING UNDER A WATERFALL IS CALLED MISOGI, A RITUAL USED TO PURIFY THE WHOLE BODY, AND TO PREPARE THE MIND. IT'S NOT ONLY MENTALLY TOUGH, IT ALSO NEEDS A LOT OF STRENGTH IN THE LEGS.
Karim says, FIRST UP FOR THE SUMO SQUAT ENDURANCE CHALLENGE IS... SOL!
Water rushes. Sol swims through a clear green pool to the waterfall.
Camille says, SOL'S TECHNIQUE WAS GOOD IN THE SHOWER WALKING BUT WILL HE FALL AT THE NEXT CHALLENGE?
Franc says, GO ON, SOL!
Karim says, LET'S GO, SOL!
Sol climbs onto rocks. He stands partially under the water.
Karim says, GET INTO SQUAT POSITION. THREE, TWO, ONE, GO!
Sol squats.
Sol says, I FOUND IT REALLY DIFFICULT, IT REALLY HURT MY QUADS.
Karim calls, CAN YOU GO ANY LOWER?
Sol squats lower.
Franc says, COME ON, SOL!
Karim says, AND ONE MINUTE DONE.
Sol says, WHEN I WAS HOLDING THE SQUAT POSITION, I WANTED TO GIVE UP SO BAD. BUT I KNEW I COULDN'T BECAUSE I REALLY WANTED TO BEAT FRANC.
Karim says, OH, IS HE GOING?
Sol’s foot slips. He sits down on a rock.
Karim says, AND HE'S GONE, WELL DONE.
Camille says, SUCH A GOOD EFFORT FROM SOL.
(Clapping)
Franc calls, THAT WAS SO GOOD, SOL!
(Music playing)
Franc swims in the water. He climbs up on the rocks.
Camille narrates, FRANC IS CLIMBING PURPOSEFULLY TOWARDS HIS IMPENDING DOOM-- SORRY, I MEAN THE WATERFALL.
Franc says, I WAS REALLY DETERMINED TO DO BETTER THAN SOL, BUT THE MAIN THING GOING THROUGH MY HEAD IS TRYING TO IMPRESS SENSEI.
Franc squats under the waterfall.
Karim shouts, GET DOWN. THREE, TWO, ONE. SUMO SQUAT!
(Music playing)
Karim calls, FRANC, BUM DOWN, YOU NEED TO GET LOWER, MAN.
Camille says, FRANC IS FINDING IT HARD TO ADOPT THE CORRECT POSE.
Franc crouches.
Karim asks, NOT SITTING DOWN, ARE YOU?
Franc says, I'VE BEEN TOLD TO GO HIGHER AND I'VE BEEN TOLD TO GO LOWER.
Karim says, DOWN A BIT, NOT THAT. NOT THAT FAR! IN BETWEEN THERE, MAN.
Camille says, HE CAN'T QUITE GET THE POSITION RIGHT. WITH FRANC THE ONLY ONE NOT TO BE PLAYER OF THE DAY YET, WILL THIS JEOPARDIZE HIS CHANCES WITH THE SENSEI? HE MIGHT BE TOUGH, BUT THIS IS TAKING ALL HIS STRENGTH.
Franc says, IT REALLY HURT BECAUSE OF ALL THE PRESSURE ON MY BACK, AND HAVING TO BALANCE AND NOT SLIP, AS WELL AS HOLDING MYSELF UP IN A SUMO SQUAT.
Franc puts hit hands down and sits.
Karim says, AND HE'S GONE. WELL DONE, FRANC!
(Music playing)
Karim asks, HOW WAS THAT, FRANC? HARD?
Sol says, YOU SHOULD DEDUCT POINTS, HE CHEATED.
Camille says, OH, THE COMPETITION BETWEEN THE BOYS IS FIERCE! LET'S FIND OUT THE RESULTS.
Karim says, FRANC, I'M DEDUCTING 30 SECONDS, BECAUSE I DO FEEL IT TOOK ABOUT 30 SECONDS FOR YOU TO GET THE RIGHT POSITION.
Franc nods.
Camille says, OH, A TIME PENALTY, BUT WILL THAT AFFECT THE RESULT?
Karim says, SOL. YOU GOT 1:46, WELL DONE. FRANC, YOU GOT 3:23, BUT I AM DEDUCTING 30 SECONDS, SO YOU GOT 2:53 SECONDS, WHICH MEANS YOU ARE THE WINNER. WELL DONE, BRO!
(Clapping)
Sol says, I DON'T THINK FRANC'S SQUAT POSITION WAS ANY GOOD, HE KEPT GOING TOO FAR UP OR TOO FAR DOWN.
Franc says, I THINK IT WAS A FAIR VICTORY. THE MARGIN WAS QUITE BIG. SO I THINK IT WAS FAIR.
Camille asks, WILL SOL'S FRANK EXCHANGE WITH FRANC AFFECT TEAM MORALE WHEN IT COMES TO THE FINAL COMPETITION? BUT FOR NOW, WHO WILL BE NAMED THE PLAYER OF THE DAY? THEY'RE HEADING TO A LOCAL SUSHI RESTAURANT FOR RAW FISH AND COLD ANALYSIS FROM SENSEI.
Plates of sushi move on a conveyor belt.
Karim asks, SENSEI, ARE YOU HAPPY WITH HOW SOL AND FRANC USED SHIRYASHI IN THAT KIND OF ENVIRONMENT? IT MUST BE TOUGH, RIGHT?
(Sensei speaking Japanese)
The translator says, AFTER FRANC FELL DOWN THE FIRST TIME AND THEN STARTED CLIMBING BACK UP, HE ACTUALLY HAD HIS ELBOWS IN TIGHT, AND HIS HANDS TOGETHER IN PROPER SHIRYASHI FORM, I REALLY WASN'T EXPECTING THAT, I WAS SERIOUSLY IMPRESSED. SOL, BECAUSE YOU'RE SO LIGHT, THIS WAS QUITE A CHALLENGE FOR YOU, BUT YOU WERE GETTING YOUR WEIGHT LOW AND YOUR STANCE WIDE. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, YOU DID A GOOD JOB TODAY.
(Music playing)
Karim asks, SENSEI, WHO IS OUR PLAYER OF THE DAY?
(Sensei speaking Japanese)
Sensei says, FRANC.
Karim says, HEY!
(Clapping)
Karim says, WELL DONE FRANC, EXTRA SUSHI FOR YOU.
Franc says, YES!
Karim points at Sol.
Karim says, AND NO FOOD FOR YOU. JOKING!
Sensei ties a blue headband around Franc’s head.
Karim says, YES!
Franc says, I AM EXTREMELY CHUFFED THAT I FINALLY GOT PLAYER OF THE DAY. I'VE BEEN TRYING MY HARDEST, AND ALL MY WORK FINALLY PAYED OFF.
Karim says, IS THAT EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU HAS PLAYER OF THE DAY NOW?
Franc says, YES.
Karim asks, SO ARE WE GONNA BE THINKING ABOUT WHO IS GOING TO BE TEAM CAPTAIN ON MATCH DAY?
The boys say, YES.
Karim asks, DO YOU BOTH WANT IT?
The boys say, YES.
Karim says, OKAY, COOL, 'CAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW, REEF CAN COME BACK WITH A VENGEANCE, MIGHT BE WELL RESTED.
Reef says, NOW THAT I'VE HAD A REST, I'M DEFINITELY GOING TO WORK 10 TIMES HARDER.
(Music playing)
Camille narrates, NEXT TIME ON A WEEK TO BEAT THE WORLD... THE BOYS TACKLE A BIG POLE AND A BULKY WRESTLER.
Karim says, YES, SOL!
Camille says, KARIM THROWS SHAPES AT THE DANCE STUDIO.
Karim does break-dancing moves as a woman in a kimono watches.
Camille says, AND THEY HIT THE TOWN TO PUT THEIR NEW FOOTWORK TO THE TEST BEFORE THE BIG SUMO TOURNAMENT IN JAPAN.
