Transcript: Mindfulness
A title reads "TVO Kids presents."
In animation, the opening of the show rolls.
As the sun comes up between the mountains, colourful letters with different mood facial expressions form the name of the show. It reads "How do you feel?"
Akin is in his early teens, with slightly long braided brown hair and wears a yellow hoodie and jeans.
Akin's room is full of colourful furniture, has different colour walls, a black and white checkered floor, pink curtains, and a neon sign that reads "Feelings" behind a couch.
Lying on a sofa, he says HEY GANG, I'VE GOT A CASE OF
THE MOPES,
SO I'M FEELING A
LITTLE DOWN.
SEE, I DIDN'T GET THE GRADE
I WANTED ON A TEST.
I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO
DO BETTER,
AND NOW MY HEAD IS LIKE
A BEEHIVE
OF THOUGHTS BUZZING AROUND.
He walks into the backyard.
He says WHAT IF I DIDN'T STUDY
HARD ENOUGH?
WHAT IF I JUST DON'T
UNDERSTAND IT?
WHAT IF...MY MOM GETS
MAD AT ME?
SOMETIMES WHEN MY NEGATIVE
THOUGHTS ARE
TAKING OVER MY BRAIN,
I TRY TO PRACTICE SOMETHING
CALLED MINDFULNESS.
MINDFULNESS MEANS TRYING
TO JUST FOCUS ON
WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT
NOW INSTEAD OF WORRYING
WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE OR WHAT
MIGHT HAPPEN LATER.
MINDFULNESS CAN BE TOUGH, BUT
LUCKILY I'VE GOT
FIVE FRIENDS TO HELP ME
OUT...
MY SENSES!
He stands next to a green cardboard with five columns, one for every sense.
He says USING ANY OF YOUR SENSES
SIGHT, TOUCH, SOUND, SMELL,
AND TASTE,
CAN HELP KEEP YOUR MIND
ON MINDFULNESS.
I EVEN MADE THIS EXTRA SPECIAL
CHART TO HELP ME KEEP TRACK.
EVERY TIME I USE A SENSE I PUT
A STICKER ON THE CHART!
FIRST, I USE MY EYES TO SEE FIVE
DIFFERENT THINGS.
I SEE A WATERING CAN,
THAT'S NICE.
AND OVER THERE, A SOCCER BALL.
INTERESTING.
THERE'S A TRICYCLE,
A GATE,
AND LOOK AT THAT STOOL,
MINDING IT'S OWN BUSINESS.
He puts stickers on the eye column.
He says THEN, I USE MY HANDS TO TOUCH
FOUR THINGS.
LIKE THIS PRICKLY BENCH,
THIS STUFFED PAL, THIS GRASS,
OR THE MESH ON THIS FISHING NET.
THEN I PRICK UP MY EARS AND
LISTEN.
I HEAR BIRDS CHIRPING,
THE WIND,
AND A CAR HONKING.
NOW IT'S TIME TO USE MY NOSE, TO
SMELL TWO THINGS.
LIKE...THIS FLOWER!
AND THE FRESH AIR AROUND ME.
[inhales]
FINALLY, I TASTE ONE THING.
LIKE THIS FRESH TASTY APPLE!
[apple crunch]
He bites an apple.
He says IS IT CRUNCHY? IS IT SOUR?
IS IT SWEET?
THE NEXT TIME YOU'RE FEELING
FRAZZLED,
AND NEGATIVE THOUGHTS ARE
TAKING OVER YOUR BRAIN,
TRY MINDFULNESS BY
USING YOUR SENSES.
THEY CAN HELP REMIND US TO STAY
FOCUSED ON WHAT'S
HAPPENING RIGHT NOW
NOT BEFORE,OR LATER.
THANKS FRIENDS!
In a high pitched voice, his hand says YOU'RE WELCOME AKIN.
Akin looks confused.
Music plays as the end credits roll.
