Transcript: When We Were Alone | That TVOkids Show
Music plays as an animated slate shows a map unfolding. The name of the show reads "That TVOKids Show from home."
Laura and a guest appear on split screens, each sitting inside a different home. Laura wears a multi-coloured pastel sweater.
She says HEY TVO KIDS, YOU ARE HANGING OUT WITH LAURA, AND I'M SO EXCITED BECAUSE TODAY I'M HERE WITH AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR DAVID ROBERTSON. WELCOME, DAVID! HOW ARE YOU TODAY?
A caption appears on screen. It reads "David Robertson. Author."
David is in his forties, with wavy black hair and a full beard. He's wearing a black T-shirt.
He says THANK YOU! I'M DOING WELL! THANKS FOR HAVING ME.
Laura says YES, I'M SO EXCITED TO BE TALKING TO YOU TODAY BECAUSE WE'RE GONNA BE TALKING ABOUT YOUR AWESOME BOOK, WHEN WE WERE ALONE. CAN YOU TELL THE TVO KIDS A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT?
A picture of the book appears briefly on screen. The cover features a drawing of two children lying on a pile of colourful dry leaves.
David says YEAH, SO WHEN WE WERE ALONE IS A PICTURE BOOK THAT IS ABOUT A GRANDMOTHER AND A GRANDCHILD, AND THEY'RE JUST HAVING A CONVERSATION WITH EACH OTHER. SO THE GRANDCHILD NOTICES THINGS ABOUT THE GRANDMOTHER, ABOUT HER HAIR, OR HER CLOTHING, OR HER LANGUAGE, OR THE FACT THAT SHE HAS HER FAMILY OVER ALL THE TIME. AND THE GRANDMOTHER TELLS THE GRANDCHILD FIRST ABOUT HER EXPERIENCE AT RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL, AND THEN HOW ALL THE THINGS THAT SHE ALMOST LOST ARE THINGS THAT SHE HOLDS VERY CLOSE TO HER HEART NOW.
Laura says RIGHT, OKAY. DAVID, I WANNA KNOW, WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR KIDS TO LEARN ABOUT RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS?
David says I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE KIDS HAVE, I THINK, THE BEST OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE REALLY MEANINGFUL, POSITIVE CHANGE IN THIS COUNTRY, AND ONE OF THE WAYS THAT WE CAN DO THAT IS LEARN AS MUCH AS WE CAN AS EARLY AS WE CAN. AND SO BOOKS LIKE WHEN WE WERE ALONE HELPS US TO LEARN ABOUT HISTORY THAT MIGHT BE DIFFICULT IN WAYS THAT ARE APPROPRIATE FOR YOUR AGE, AND THAT ARE SAFE. AND THEN AS YOU GET OLDER, YOU CAN LEARN MORE AND MORE, AND HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE THAT YOU NEED TO BE GOOD LEADERS FOR US, BECAUSE YOU'RE THE ONES THAT ARE GONNA BE MAKING CHANGE.
Laura says TOTALLY. I THINK THAT'S AN AWESOME WAY TO PUT IT. TVO KIDS, YOU HAVE SO MUCH POWER TO MAKE CHANGE, SO WHAT YOU LEARN NOW IS REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT. NOW, DAVID, WHEN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS, THE WORD "RECONCILIATION." COMES UP A LOT. WHAT IS RECONCILIATION, AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR KIDS TO LEARN TO LISTEN?
David says YEAH, SO RECONCILIATION IS A BIG WORD, AND SO I KNOW THAT IT CAN BE A LITTLE INTIMIDATING OR A LITTLE CONFUSING, BUT ALL IT MEANS IS THAT WE TAKE THE TIME TO GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER. MY DAD USED TO SAY THAT IT'S JUST ONE HUMAN BEING SEEING ANOTHER HUMAN BEING, AND MAKING THE EFFORT TO LEARN THEIR STORIES, LISTEN TO THEM, AND GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER REALLY WELL SO THAT WE CAN UNDERSTAND HOW WE SEE THE WORLD THROUGH EACH OTHER'S EYES. AND I THINK THAT HELPS US TO RESPECT EACH OTHER, AND LIVE IN A REALLY STRONG, DIVERSE COMMUNITY.
Laura says I LOVE THAT, LEARNING TO SEE THE WORLD THROUGH EACH OTHER'S EYES, GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER. THAT'S AN AWESOME WAY OF PUTTING IT. DAVID, I KNOW THAT IN THE MONTH OF JUNE, YOU ARE DONATING SOME OF THE PROCEEDS OF YOUR BOOK SALES FROM WHEN WE WERE ALONE TO THE INDIAN RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL SURVIVORS SOCIETY, WHICH IS AWESOME. WHERE CAN TVO KIDS BUY YOUR BOOK?
David says ANYWHERE. YOU KNOW, I WOULD ALWAYS SAY SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE FIRST, AND IT SHOULD BE THERE. BUT IF NOT, CHAPTERS OR AMAZON OR ANYWHERE YOU CAN FIND BOOKS, YOU CAN PROBABLY ALSO FIND MY BOOK.
Laura says AWESOME. WELL, DAVID, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HANGING OUT WITH US TODAY. WE'LL SEE YOU NEXT TIME.
David says AWW, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR HAVING ME!
Laura says BYE, DAVID!
David says BUH-BYE!
Several picture of books on the topic of residential schools appear on screen as a caption reads "TVOKids.com."
