Monica says, IT’S BASED OFF OF A TRUE STORY
WHEN PHYLLIS WENT TO HER FIRST

Monica says, HEY, CHRIS!
Chris says, HI, THANKS FOR HAVING ME.
Monica says, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE.
WE HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS FOR
YOU.
THE FIRST QUESTION IS, WHAT
ARE RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS?
Text reads, Chris Beaver, Indigenous Affairs Journalist.
Chris says, WELL, TO EXPLAIN THAT I THINK
IT'S IMPORTANT THAT PEOPLE
UNDERSTAND THAT CANADA IS ON
LAND THAT WAS STOLEN FROM
INDIGENOUS PEOPLES.
Laura and Monica nod.
Chris says, AND THIS WAS A BIG MISTAKE THAT

THE PROBLEM IS THAT INDIGENOUS

THEY TRIED TO DO THIS BY
KIDNAPPING INDIGENOUS CHILDREN

Chris says, THESE SCHOOLS WERE USUALLY RUN
BY PRIESTS AND NUNS WHO WERE
OFTEN VERY MEAN TO THE CHILDREN
AND LIVING CONDITIONS WERE SO
BAD THAT MANY CHILDREN BECAME
SICK AND EVEN DIED.
Laura and Monica nod.
Chris says, THOSE WHO SURVIVED HAD SUCH

SO, OVER 117 YEARS AT LEAST

Chris says, WELL, OBVIOUSLY THE

Chris wears an orange shirt.
He says, MOST CANADIANS DIDN'T EVEN KNOW

AND THAT'S BECAUSE WE HAD A

EVERY CHILD MATTERS.
I WOULD LIKE TO PLAY A SHORT

Sukhamani plays a dilruba. In the tree fort, Laura looks impressed.
Laura says, WOW, THANKS YOU TWO

US TO LEARN ALL ABOUT WHAT
ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN RESIDENTIAL
SCHOOLS TO THINK ABOUT THOSE
CHILDREN.
THAT'S SO TRUE SUKHMANI AND
SIRTAJ.
WE HAVE MUCH MORE QUESTION.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN THROUGH THE
PROCESS OF MAKING THIS VIDEO?
Sukhmani says, WE LEARNT

MAKING THE VIDEO.
INCLUDING LIKE, WE LEARNT

IN THE RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS.

ABOUT VIDEO EDITING (indiscernible)
…THE WAY.
WE ALSO LEARNED HOW WE’RE
NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE PICTURES
OF, OF THEIR MEMORIAL ITEMS, UM,
THAT BELONG TO INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES.
UM, THAT WAS ONE OF THE OTHER THINGS
Sukhmani smiles.
Laura says, AWESOME.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING

TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS AT
11:10 A.M. ON ALL TVOKIDS
CHANNELS.
Text reads, tvokids.com, YouTube. The YouTube icon is displayed. In the tree fort, a split screen shows Monica, a woman in a yellow shirt, and a man in an orange shirt.
Monica says, TVOKIDS WE HAVE AN AMAZING
GUEST HERE WITH US HERE IN THE TREE
FORT.
SHE’S A WRITER AND A FILMMAKER,
VERY ACCOMPLISHED PERSON.
PLEASE WELCOME KATARINA.
The man is Monica’s ASL sign language interpreter. Text reads, Katarina, writer and filmmaker.
(Applause)
Katerina waves.
Katerina’s voice translator says, HI.
Monica says, THANK YOU SO MUCH
FOR BEING HERE WITH US.
I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU CO-WROTE A
FEATURE FILM.
IT HASN'T COME OUT YET BUT IT IS
AMAZING AND I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE
IT.
IT IS, FINALITY OF DUSK.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT IT AND WHY
IT'S MEANINGFUL TO YOU?
The voice translator says, ABSOLUTELY.
THIS FILM IS VERY IMPORTANT AS
IT EMPHASIZES HOW MUCH WE NEED
TO VALUE THE ENVIRONMENT AND
HUMANITY, UH, DEVELOPING LOVE,
COMPASSION, UNDERSTANDING OF
ONE ANOTHER REGARDLESS OF
BACKGROUND, WHERE PEOPLE COME
FROM AND THAT, THAT IS WHY THIS FILM
IS SO IMPORTANT TO ME.
Monica says, THAT IS SO
BEAUTIFUL.
KATARINA, I WANNA KNOW WHERE
DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER YOUR
PASSION FOR WRITING AND FILM
MAKING?
The voice translator says, WELL, FOR ME I MEAN I’VE
HAD AN AMAZING CO-WRITER, MADDY
THOMAS WHO WAS ALSO THE DIRECTOR OF
THE FILM AND SO THE TWO OF US
HAVE JUST REALLY BEEN ABLE TO
WORK TOGETHER TO DEVELOP THIS
FILM AND AGREE AND COMPROMISES
TO THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
AND, AND WORK THROUGH THAT TOGETHER.
UM, WE’VE BEEN ABLE TO TELL A
STORY THROUGH THE CHARACTERS.
Monica nods.
The voice translator says, THE ACTIONS.
THE SCRIPTS.
AND SO I THINK YOU KNOW THERE’S
DEFINITELY SOME TECHNICAL
ASPECTS OF THAT BUT THE OUTLINE
IS SUCH A CRITICAL PIECE.
SO WE STARTED WITH THAT BEFORE
WE ACTUALLY MOVED FORWARD WITH
THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SCRIPT
AND, AND WRITING IT.
SO, THAT'S MORE OR LESS I THINK
HOW I WAS ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD
WITH THIS FILM.
Monica says, AMAZING.
TEAMWORK AND COLLABORATION CAN
MAKE ANYTHING POSSIBLE.
KATARINA, YOU’RE AN INSPIRATION
TO SO MANY PEOPLE.
COULD YOU GIVE THE TVOKIDS
WATCHING AT HOME SOME ADVICE IF
THEY WANT TO BE A WRITER BUT
MAYBE THEY’RE AFRAID OR DON'T
KNOW WHERE TO START?
The voice translator says, ABSOLUTELY.
IF YOU HAVE A STORY YOU WANT TO
TELL, TELL IT.
Monica nods.
The voice translator says, NO MATTER HOW SMALL, NO MATTER
HOW BIG, SHARE YOUR STORY.
TELL YOUR STORY.
AND IF WRITING ISN'T NECESSARILY
YOUR ARTISTRY OF CHOICE, YOU CAN
MAKE FILMS.
YOU CAN WORK THROUGH POETRY,
ART, WHATEVER THAT LOOKS LIKE
FOR YOU.
EVERY PIECE OF ART HAS A STORY
WITHIN IT.
AND, WHICHEVER ARTISTIC FORM YOU
CHOOSE TO EXPRESS THAT THROUGH.
TELL YOUR STORY AND FOLLOW YOUR
HEART.
Monica says, TELL YOUR STORY AND
FOLLOW YOUR HEART.
WISE WORDS TO LIVE BY.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, KATARINA, FOR
BEING HERE.
YOU’RE AN AMAZING GUEST.
I HOPE YOU COME BACK SOON.
BYE FOR NOW.
Monica waves.
(Applause)
Katerina waves.
The voice translator says, BYE.

THAT FOR EVERYBODY TO
KNOW WHAT, WHAT HAPPENED IN THE
RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS TO THE KIDS AT
RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS.
(indiscernible)

US TO LEARN ALL ABOUT WHAT
ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN RESIDENTIAL
SCHOOLS TO THINK ABOUT THOSE
CHILDREN.
THAT'S SO TRUE SUKHMANI AND
SIRTAJ.
WE HAVE MUCH MORE QUESTION.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN THROUGH THE
PROCESS OF MAKING THIS VIDEO?
Sukhmani says, WE LEARNT
A LOT OF THINGS, UM, DURING THE
PROCESS OF UM,
MAKING THE VIDEO.
INCLUDING LIKE, WE LEARNT
A LOT OF THINGS ABOUT A LOT OF KIDS
IN THE RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS.
AND UM, WE ALSO LEARNT A LOT
ABOUT VIDEO EDITING (indiscernible)
…THE WAY.
WE ALSO LEARNED HOW WE’RE
NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE PICTURES
OF, OF THEIR MEMORIAL ITEMS, UM,
THAT BELONG TO INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES.
UM, THAT WAS ONE OF THE OTHER THINGS
Sukhmani smiles.
Laura says, AWESOME.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING
THAT YOU TWO.

AT THE CHALLENGER.
The announcer says, CHALLENGER!

CALLED THIS COUNTRY CANADA.
Laura nods.
Monica says, VERY COOL TURTLE.

Monica asks, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS?

Monica says, TVOKIDS WE HAVE AN AMAZING
GUEST HERE WITH US HERE IN THE TREE
FORT.
SHE’S A WRITER AND A FILMMAKER,
VERY ACCOMPLISHED PERSON.
PLEASE WELCOME KATARINA.
The man is Monica’s ASL sign language interpreter. Text reads, Katarina, writer and filmmaker.
(Applause)
Katerina waves.
Katerina’s voice translator says, HI.
Monica says, THANK YOU SO MUCH
FOR BEING HERE WITH US.
I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU CO-WROTE A
FEATURE FILM.
IT HASN'T COME OUT YET BUT IT IS
AMAZING AND I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE
IT.
IT IS, FINALITY OF DUSK.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT IT AND WHY
IT'S MEANINGFUL TO YOU?
The voice translator says, ABSOLUTELY.
THIS FILM IS VERY IMPORTANT AS
IT EMPHASIZES HOW MUCH WE NEED
TO VALUE THE ENVIRONMENT AND
HUMANITY, UH, DEVELOPING LOVE,
COMPASSION, UNDERSTANDING OF
ONE ANOTHER REGARDLESS OF
BACKGROUND, WHERE PEOPLE COME
FROM AND THAT, THAT IS WHY THIS FILM
IS SO IMPORTANT TO ME.
Monica says, THAT IS SO
BEAUTIFUL.
KATARINA, I WANNA KNOW WHERE
DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER YOUR
PASSION FOR WRITING AND FILM
MAKING?
The voice translator says, WELL, FOR ME I MEAN I’VE
HAD AN AMAZING CO-WRITER, MADDY
THOMAS WHO WAS ALSO THE DIRECTOR OF
THE FILM AND SO THE TWO OF US
HAVE JUST REALLY BEEN ABLE TO
WORK TOGETHER TO DEVELOP THIS
FILM AND AGREE AND COMPROMISES
TO THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
AND, AND WORK THROUGH THAT TOGETHER.
UM, WE’VE BEEN ABLE TO TELL A
STORY THROUGH THE CHARACTERS.
Monica nods.
The voice translator says, THE ACTIONS.
THE SCRIPTS.
AND SO I THINK YOU KNOW THERE’S
DEFINITELY SOME TECHNICAL
ASPECTS OF THAT BUT THE OUTLINE
IS SUCH A CRITICAL PIECE.
SO WE STARTED WITH THAT BEFORE
WE ACTUALLY MOVED FORWARD WITH
THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SCRIPT
AND, AND WRITING IT.
SO, THAT'S MORE OR LESS I THINK
HOW I WAS ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD
WITH THIS FILM.
Monica says, AMAZING.
TEAMWORK AND COLLABORATION CAN
MAKE ANYTHING POSSIBLE.
KATARINA, YOU’RE AN INSPIRATION
TO SO MANY PEOPLE.
COULD YOU GIVE THE TVOKIDS
WATCHING AT HOME SOME ADVICE IF
THEY WANT TO BE A WRITER BUT
MAYBE THEY’RE AFRAID OR DON'T
KNOW WHERE TO START?
The voice translator says, ABSOLUTELY.
IF YOU HAVE A STORY YOU WANT TO
TELL, TELL IT.
Monica nods.
The voice translator says, NO MATTER HOW SMALL, NO MATTER
HOW BIG, SHARE YOUR STORY.
TELL YOUR STORY.
AND IF WRITING ISN'T NECESSARILY
YOUR ARTISTRY OF CHOICE, YOU CAN
MAKE FILMS.
YOU CAN WORK THROUGH POETRY,
ART, WHATEVER THAT LOOKS LIKE
FOR YOU.
EVERY PIECE OF ART HAS A STORY
WITHIN IT.
AND, WHICHEVER ARTISTIC FORM YOU
CHOOSE TO EXPRESS THAT THROUGH.
TELL YOUR STORY AND FOLLOW YOUR
HEART.
Monica says, TELL YOUR STORY AND
FOLLOW YOUR HEART.
WISE WORDS TO LIVE BY.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, KATARINA, FOR
BEING HERE.
YOU’RE AN AMAZING GUEST.
I HOPE YOU COME BACK SOON.
BYE FOR NOW.
Monica waves.
(Applause)
