Transcript: Storyboarding Memorable Moments
(soft music plays)
A Female Announcer says WELCOME TO
TVOKIDS POWER HOUR
OF LEARNING.
TODAY'S JUNIOR LESSON.
STORYBOARDING
MEMORABLE MOMENTS.
A caption reads "Junio 4-6. Teacher Arianna." Arianna sits in a living room, with plants and a window in the back. She is in her late thirties, with several short black braids. She wears a blue sweater and big hoop earrings.
Arianna says HI, EVERYONE.
MY NAME IS ARIANNA
AND I AM EXCITED
TO BE WORKING WITH YOU
FOR THIS POWER HOUR OF LEARNING.
TODAY WE ARE GOING TO BE DOING
ONE OF MY FAVOURITE THINGS.
WRITING!
FOR THIS LESSON,
YOU ARE GOING TO NEED
A PIECE OF PAPER AND SOMETHING
TO WRITE WITH.
I ALWAYS LOVE USING
COLOURFUL PENS,
BECAUSE IT MAKES THE EXPERIENCE
MORE A LITTLE BIT MORE FUN.
LET'S GET STARTED.
FOR OUR WRITING TODAY,
I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT AN
IMPORTANT EVENT IN YOUR LIFE.
IT COULD BE ANYTHING AT ALL.
WHAT MADE THAT MOMENT MEMORABLE?
I'VE BEEN A TEACHER FOR 11 YEARS
WHICH KNOW IS LONGER THAN MANY
OF YOU HAVE BEEN ALIVE
AND I REMEMBER MY FIRST DAY
JUST LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY.
I COULD BARELY SLEEP
THE NIGHT BEFORE
AND I FELT LIKE
I HAD BUTTERFLIES
FLUTTERING IN MY STOMACH.
I WAS NERVOUS.
INCREDIBLY, I MET SOME REALLY
AMAZING STUDENTS
WHO WELCOMED ME INTO THE SCHOOL
AND IN NO TIME AT ALL,
IT FELT LIKE HOME.
THAT'S ONE OF
MY MEMORABLE MOMENTS.
HERE'S SOME PICTURES TO GET YOU
THINKING ABOUT OTHER MOMENTS
THAT MIGHT BE MEMORABLE.
LET'S TAKE A LOOK.
RIDING A BIKE FOR THE FIRST TIME
WITHOUT TRAINING WHEELS.
A picture shows a man helping a boy ride a bicycle.
She continues I KNOW SOME TIMES
YOU MIGHT BE THINKING,
"OOH, DO I HAVE THE RIGHT AMOUNT
OF BALANCE HERE?"
IT WAS PROBABLY
AN EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE.
WHAT ABOUT GOING TO THE DEEP-END
OF A POOL FOR THE FIRST TIME?
OF COURSE, WHEN THE LIFEGUARD
ALLOWS YOU
TO GO INTO THE DEEP END.
OR MAYBE BRINGING HOME
A NEW PET.
I KNOW IN THIS PICTURE HERE
IT'S A RABBIT,
BUT IT COULD BE A DOG OR A CAT.
HOW DID THAT MOMENT FEEL?
MAYBE IT'S MEETING YOUR SIBLING
FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME.
OR GOING TO AN AIRPORT AND
FLYING ON AN AIRPLANE
FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME.
THESE ARE ALL REALLY
MEMORABLE EVENTS.
HMM.
I WONDER IF MEMORABLE MOMENTS
HAVE TO BE FIRST TIMES,
LIKE RIDING YOUR BIKE
FOR THE FIRST TIME,
OR YOUR FIRST PET.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
I'M SURE THAT YOU'VE HAD MANY
MEMORABLE MOMENTS IN YOUR LIFE.
TODAY, WE'RE GONNA CONSIDER
ONE MEMORABLE MOMENT
AND WRITE ABOUT IT.
IT MIGHT BE HARD, I KNOW,
TO JUST PICK ONE,
BUT THAT'S WHAT WE'RE GONNA
FOCUS IN ON FOR TODAY.
WHILE YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT ONE
MEMORABLE MOMENT,
THE ONE THAT YOU'RE GOING TO
PICK AND WRITE ABOUT TODAY,
LET'S LOOK AT PARTS
OF SPEECH THAT HELP
TO DESCRIBE THINGS OR ACTIONS.
WE CALL THESE ADJECTIVES
AND ADVERBS.
THEY'RE IMPORTANT IN WRITING,
BECAUSE THEY HELP US
TO MAKE OUR WRITING MORE
INTERESTING TO OUR READERS.
HERE'S TEACHER WYNNE TO HELP US
TO UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS.
LET'S WATCH!
A clip plays.
Winny stands next to a big touch screen showing the drawing of a bear next to a sentence. She is in her mid-twenties, with long straight brown hair. She wears glasses and a blue T-shirt with a print that reads "Home Work Zone."
Winny says WELCOME TO THE
HOMEWORK ZONE, I'M TEACHER WINNY
AND TODAY WE'RE GOING TO LOOK AT
THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN
ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS.
LET'S GO TO THE SMART BOARD.
NOW I HAVE A SENTENCE HERE,
She reads THE
BIG BROWN BEAR ROARS LOUDLY
She continues AND
I WANT TO FIND THE ADJECTIVES
AND ADVERBS IN THE SENTENCE.
FIRST WE WANT TO FIND OUT
WHERE THE ADJECTIVE IS.
NOW WE KNOW ADJECTIVES HELP US
TO DESCRIBE THE NOUN AND A NOUN
CAN BE A PERSON, PLACE OR THING.
SO LET'S SEE IF WE CAN FIND THE
NOUN IN THIS SENTENCE.
THE BIG BROWN BEAR ROARS LOUDLY
AND I'D PROBABLY GUESS THAT THE
NOUN IS THE BEAR BECAUSE IT'S
THE PERSON IN THE SENTENCE.
HOW DO, HOW IS THE BEAR?
WELL I THINK THE BEAR IS BIG AND
BROWN.
SO BIG AND BROWN MUST BE
ADJECTIVES BECAUSE THEY HELP ME
DESCRIBE THE NOUN.
She circles the adjectives and continues WE ALSO WANT TO LOOK FOR
ADVERBS AND ADVERBS HELP US
DESCRIBE THE VERB.
SO A VERB WE KNOW IS AN ACTION
WORD, SO LET'S SEE IF WE CAN
FIND THE ACTION WORD.
THE BIG BROWN BEAR ROARS LOUDLY.
I KNOW ROARS IS THE ACTION WORD
SO IN ORDER TO FIND THE ADVERB
WE WANT TO FIGURE OUT WELL HOW
DOES THE BEAR ROAR?
AND WE KNOW THE BEAR ROARS
LOUDLY, SO THE ADVERB MUST BE
LOUDLY.
SO REMEMBER WHEN WE'RE LOOKING
FOR ADVERBS WE'RE LOOKING TO
ANSWER THE QUESTION OF HOW MUCH,
WHERE, WHEN AND HOW AND THIS
HELPS US TO FIND OUT THAT LOUDLY
IS AN ADVERB.
SO WHEN EVER YOU'RE LOOKING FOR
ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS THINK OF
NOUNS AND VERBS.
I'M TEACHER WINNY AND I HOPE
THAT HELPS YOU UNDERSTAND A BIT
MORE ABOUT ADJECTIVES AND
ADVERBS.
Arianna says THANKS, TEACHER WYNNE!
FROM THAT SHORT VIDEO,
WE LEARNED THAT ADJECTIVES
ARE WORDS USED
TO DESCRIBE NOUNS,
SO PEOPLE, PLACES AND THINGS.
AND WE ALSO LEARNED
ABOUT ADVERBS.
THOSE ARE THE WORDS
TO DESCRIBE OUR ACTIONS.
FOR TODAY'S ACTIVITY,
I WOULD LIKE YOU TO KEEP THAT
IN MIND AS WE WORK.
REMEMBER, ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS
CAN HELP US
TO MAKE OUR WRITING
EVEN MORE INTERESTING.
I'LL SAY THAT A LOT
PROBABLY TODAY.
ARE YOU READY TO GET STARTED
WITH OUR WRITING?
I WANT YOU TO PICK
THAT ONE MEMORABLE MOMENT.
ONCE YOU HAVE IT IN MIND,
WE'RE GOING TO START
THINKING ABOUT THE 5WS.
THE 5WS OF YOUR MEMORABLE
MOMENT.
THAT'S RIGHT, I SAID IT.
THE 5WS.
DO YOU REMEMBER THEM?
ALL GREAT STORIES,
OR IN THIS CASE,
ALL GREAT MEMORABLE EVENTS
HAVE THEM.
HERE'S ZOEY WITH A REMINDER
OF WHAT THEY ARE.
SO, LET'S WATCH.
A caption reads "TVO Kids presents."
Colourful animated letters with googly eyes jump around and form the name "Wacky Word Songs."
A song says IT's THE WACKY WACKY WORD SONGS.
OH YEAH.
Zoey is in her early teens, with long straight brown hair and wears brown trousers, a polka dotted yellow sweater and a denim jacket.
In the attic, Zoey reads OH! THAT'S WHY THE KIDS
WANTED TO FLY.
She closes the book and says WOW. WHAT A GREAT STORY.
DID YOU KNOW THAT
EVERY STORY ANSWERS
FIVE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS?
THEY'RE CALLED THE 5WS.
WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, AND WHY?
YOU CAN'T TELL
A STORY WITHOUT THEM.
I WROTE THIS SONG ABOUT
THE 5WS.
Zoey sings a song that says YOU CAN'T TELL A STORY
WITHOUT THE 5WS
WHO? WHAT? WHEN? WHERE? WHY?
THE 5WS
YOU NEED A WHO IN THE STORY
WHO IS IT ABOUT?
LIKE YOUR FRIEND
OR YOUR TEAM
OR A MONKEY HIDING OUT
THE WHAT IS WHAT HAPPENED
IN THE STORY YOU'RE TELLING
IT'S THE ACTION OF THE STORY
IT'S WHAT IS HAPPENING
THE WHEN IS THE TIME
WHEN THE STORY'S HAPPENING
LIKE TODAY, YESTERDAY,
OR THE FUTURE YOU'RE DREAMING
THE WHERE IS THE PLACE
WHERE THE STORY'S HAPPENING
LIKE AT SCHOOL OR ON THE BUS
OR AT THE SKATING RINK
An animation shows Zoey at a desk with notes and books.
She sings YOU NEED A WHY IN A STORY
WHY IS IT HAPPENING?
YOUR IMAGINATION
CAN MAKE IT ANYTHING
YOU CAN'T TELL A STORY
WITHOUT THE 5WS
WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY,
THE 5WS
OH, NO, YOU CAN'T TELL A STORY
WITHOUT THE 5WS
WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY,
THE 5WS
The song ends.
Zoey says REMEMBER THE 5WS AND YOU'LL TELL
SOME AWESOME STORIES.
OH! I JUST GOT
A GREAT STORY IDEA!
SEE YOU LATER!
A caption reads "Apartment 11 production."
Arianna says THANKS, ZOEY!
OKAY, SO NOW WE KNOW THAT
THE 5WS ARE WHO,
WHAT, WHERE,
WHEN AND WHY.
I WANT YOU TO GRAB
YOUR SHEET OF PAPER
AND LET'S GET BRAINSTORMING
ABOUT YOUR MEMORABLE MOMENT.
BRAINSTORMING
IS A FORM OF PRE-WRITING.
THAT'S RIGHT.
I SAID "PRE-WRITING."
IT'S THE WRITING THAT YOU DO
BEFORE YOU ACTUALLY GET DOWN
TO WRITING YOUR FIRST DRAFT
OF A PUBLISHED PIECE.
ALL GOOD WRITERS DO
SOME FORM OF PRE-WRITING.
TODAY WHAT WE'RE GOING
TO BE DOING
IS WE'RE GOING TO BE
CREATING A WORD WEB.
WHEN YOU'RE FINISHED,
IT'S GOING TO LOOK
SIMILAR TO THIS.
She shows a piece of paper that reads "5 Ws. Memorable moments." It has five circles connected to another one in the middle.
She continues SO, GRAB YOUR SHEET OF PAPER
AND LET'S DRAW A CIRCLE
IN THE MIDDLE.
THIS CIRCLE IN THE MIDDLE
IS WHERE WE ARE GOING TO NAME
OUR MEMORABLE MOMENT.
FROM MY EXAMPLE EARLIER,
I'M GONNA WRITE
MY FIRST DAY OF TEACHING.
WHAT'S YOUR MEMORABLE MOMENT?
I WANT YOU TO NAME IT
AND WRITE IT DOWN
IN THE MIDDLE OF THAT CIRCLE.
KIND OF LIKE WHAT
I JUST DID HERE.
Her circle reads "My first day teaching!"
She continues SO, NOW THAT WE'VE GOT
THAT DONE,
WE'VE GOT TO WORK ON CREATING
THE REST OF OUR WEB,
SO TO DO THAT, WE ARE GOING
TO DRAW FIVE LINES
FROM THE CENTRE OF OUR WEB.
IT'S GONNA LOOK A LITTLE BIT
LIKE THIS.
SO, NOW THAT YOU'VE DONE THEM
FROM THE CENTRE OUTWARD,
I'M SURE THAT YOU'RE GONNA
PROBABLY BE WONDERING
WHAT GOES ON THE ENDS OF THESE
AND WE'RE GOING TO ACTUALLY DRAW
FIVE MORE CIRCLES.
SO, WE'RE GOING TO DRAW
THOSE CIRCLES ON THE END.
AND THIS IS GONNA BE WHERE WE
ARE GOING TO PLACE
ALL OF OUR IMPORTANT INFORMATION
THAT WE WANT
TO BE ABLE TO BRAINSTORM ABOUT.
WE JUST FINISHED TALKING ABOUT
THE FACT THAT THERE ARE 5WS.
WHAT DO YOU THINK
IS GONNA HAVE TO GO...
I KNOW MY CIRCLES AREN'T PRETTY,
BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK
IS GONNA HAVE TO GO
IN EACH OF THESE CIRCLES?
IF YOU GUESSED THE 5WS,
YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.
SO, IN THE FIRST ONE,
WE'RE GONNA START OFF
WITH THE WHO.
WHO WAS A PART OF
YOUR MEMORABLE MOMENT?
I WANT YOU TO WRITE
A LIST OF ALL
OF THE PEOPLE THAT WERE THERE.
I ALSO WANT YOU TO CONSIDER
WRITING SOME ADJECTIVES
TO BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE
THOSE PEOPLE THAT WERE THERE.
FOR MY EXAMPLE,
I WAS NERVOUS ARIANNA.
BOY, WAS I NERVOUS.
BUT I ALSO MET
SOME FRIENDLY STUDENTS.
AND YOU KNOW WHAT?
I MET SOME HELPFUL TEACHERS
ALONG THE WAY.
SO, I'VE WRITTEN THOSE DOWN
IN MY CIRCLE.
I PICKED THIS ONE
RIGHT OVER HERE
TO BE ABLE TO WRITE THE WHO?
NERVOUS ARIANNA,
FRIENDLY STUDENTS,
HELPFUL TEACHERS.
BUT RIGHT NOW, WE'RE JUST MAKING
SOME DOT JOT NOTES,
SO THERE'S NO REAL NEED
TO WRITE FULL SENTENCES,
BUT I DO WANT YOU TO BE ABLE
TO INCLUDE
SOME ADJECTIVES IF YOU CAN.
THAT WOULD BE GREAT.
SO, NEXT, LET'S MOVE ONTO
THE WHAT.
I WANT YOU TO QUICKLY JOT DOWN
A BRIEF DESCRIPTION
OF WHAT HAPPENED.
WE'RE GOING TO SPEND
A FEW MINUTES HERE
TRYING TO THINK ABOUT
THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS.
WHEN I TALK ABOUT
THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS,
I'M TALKING ABOUT THE ORDER.
WHAT HAPPENED FIRST?
AND THEN, WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
TRY TO SEE IF YOU CAN
COME UP WITH
MAYBE FIVE PARTS TO YOUR MOMENT
AND TRY AND SEE IF
YOU CAN WRITE THEM IN ORDER.
YOU CAN MAKE QUICK DOT JOT NOTES
AND TRY AND SEE IF YOU CAN
INCLUDE SOME OF THOSE ADJECTIVES
OR ADVERBS THAT WE TALKED ABOUT.
START OFF WITH DOT JOT NOTES,
BUT LATER ON TODAY, WE'RE GOING
TO SPEND SOME TIME
MAYBE WRITING OUT
SOME SENTENCES,
BUT FOR RIGHT NOW, I JUST WANT
YOU TO START THINKING ABOUT
HOW DID YOUR STORY OR
YOUR MEMORABLE MOMENT START?
WHERE DID IT BEGIN
AND THEN WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
WHILE YOU'RE WRITING,
I'M GOING TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT
ABOUT MY MEMORABLE MOMENT
AND KIND OF THOSE FIVE STEPS
THAT I'M THINKING ABOUT.
SO, NUMBER ONE.
I KNOW THAT THE NIGHT BEFORE
MY FIRST DAY OF TEACHING,
I COULD BARELY SLEEP.
I WAS SO EXCITED AND NERVOUS.
SO, FOR ME,
I JUST JOT THAT DOWN.
FOR NUMBER TWO,
WHEN I FINALLY GOT
A BIT OF SLEEP,
I WOKE UP AND I FELT LIKE I HAD
A BUNCH OF QUICKLY FLYING
BUTTERFLIES IN MY STOMACH.
SEE HOW I USED
SOME ADVERBS THERE?
THAT DAY, I WASN'T EVEN ABLE
TO EAT SOME BREAKFAST.
I WAS SERIOUSLY SO NERVOUS.
NUMBER THREE.
I WALKED INTO MY NEW SCHOOL
AND THERE I MET SOME REALLY
HELPFUL TEACHERS
WHO GAVE ME A QUICK TOUR
OF THE SCHOOL
AND THEY HELPED ME FIND MY WAY
TO MY CLASSROOM.
NUMBER FOUR.
I MET SOME INCREDIBLE STUDENTS.
THEY WERE SO KIND
AND I ACTUALLY REALIZED
IN THAT MOMENT,
THAT THEY WERE JUST AS NERVOUS
ABOUT MEETING ME
AS I WAS ABOUT MEETING THEM.
WE WERE ALL FEELING
THOSE SENSE OF...
THAT SENSE OF BUTTERFLIES
IN OUR STOMACH.
NUMBER FIVE.
AT THE END OF THE DAY,
I MUST ADMIT, I WAS EXHAUSTED.
AND SOMETIMES EMOTIONS CAN MAKE
YOU FEEL THAT WAY.
BUT AS I LOOKED AROUND
MY CLASSROOM,
I FELT AT HOME IN MY NEW SCHOOL.
SO, THAT WAS
MY MEMORABLE MOMENT IN ORDER
KIND OF FROM START TO FINISH.
THAT WAS MY DAY.
WHAT'S THE ORDER OF EVENTS
FOR YOUR MEMORABLE MOMENT?
WHAT HAPPENED FIRST?
HOW DID YOUR
MEMORABLE MOMENT END?
WHAT ARE THE STEPS,
THE KIND OF IN-BETWEEN?
REMEMBER TO JOT THEM DOWN.
I'M GOING TO KEEP GOING,
BUT FEEL FREE TO COME BACK
TO THIS PART AT ANY TIME
IF YOU NEED TO ADD SOME MORE.
NEXT, WE ARE ON TO WHERE.
WHERE DID YOUR MOMENT
TAKE PLACE?
WAS IT AT HOME?
WAS IT AT A FRIEND'S
OR YOUR GRANDPARENTS'
OR MAYBE AT A PARK?
FOR ME, MINE TOOK PLACE
AT A SMALL SCHOOL.
SEE HOW I ADDED
AN ADJECTIVE THERE?
REMEMBER TO USE THEM
AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN
BECAUSE AS I'VE SAID MANY TIME
BEFORE,
THEY REALLY DO MAKE
YOUR WRITING INTERESTING.
WHERE DID YOUR
MEMORABLE MOMENT TAKE PLACE?
JOT IT DOWN ON YOUR
SHEET OF PAPER, PLEASE.
SO, SO FAR WE'VE
FIGURED OUT THE WHO,
THE WHAT, AND THE WHERE.
WE'RE ALMOST THERE!
WE'VE ONLY GOT TWO MORE
TO GO MORE TO GO.
SO, LET'S MOVE INTO THE WHEN.
WE ALREADY KNOW THAT ALL
OF OUR MEMORABLE MOMENTS,
THAT THEY'VE TAKEN PLACE
IN THE PAST.
BUT PERHAPS YOU WANT TO CONSIDER
A PARTICULAR SEASON.
MAYBE YOU KNOW THE DAY
OR MAYBE THE MONTH OR THE YEAR.
FOR ME, IT WAS OCTOBER OF 2019,
SORRY! 2009!
AND IT WAS A WARM FALL DAY.
WHEN DID YOUR MOMENT TAKE PLACE?
JOT IT DOWN ON
YOUR SHEET OF PAPER.
AGAIN, THINK ABOUT IF YOU WANT
TO DESCRIBE IT
IN ANY PARTICULAR WAY.
LASTLY, WE'RE GOING TO BE
THINKING ABOUT THE WHY.
WHY DID THIS MOMENT
TAKE PLACE?
WAS IT A SPECIAL CELEBRATION?
WAS IT A HOLIDAY?
WAS IT A DECISION THAT YOU MADE,
OR THAT PERHAPS
YOUR PARENTS MADE?
WHY DID YOUR MOMENT TAKE PLACE?
FOR ME, IT WAS BECAUSE I WAS
LOOKING FOR A JOB
AND THERE WAS A SCHOOL WAS
ACTUALLY LOOKING FOR A TEACHER.
WE JUST HAPPENED TO CONNECT.
I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT
YOUR MOMENT.
WHY DID IT HAPPEN?
JOT THAT DOWN ON YOUR PIECE
OF PAPER IN YOUR LAST CIRCLE.
WELL, HOPEFULLY,
YOU'VE GOT YOUR CIRCLES
COMPLETE SIMILAR TO MINE.
WE'VE JUST ACTUALLY COMPLETED
THE FIRST PART
OF OUR WRITING FOR TODAY.
GREAT WORK! I'M SO IMPRESSED!
WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT
LIVED EXPERIENCES
AND WHAT THAT MEANS IS THAT
WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT
MEMORABLE MOMENTS.
FOR SOME, SOLVING A MYSTERY,
OR BEING EXPOSED TO NEW IDEAS,
OR EVEN LEARNING ABOUT HISTORY
CAN ALSO BE A MEMORABLE MOMENT.
IN THIS EPISODE OF
THE
MYSTERY FILES,
E.B. AND KYLA EXPERIENCE
A MEMORABLE MOMENT.
LET'S CHECK IT OUT.
A clip plays.
(music plays)
In the basement, E.B. says WHAT A GREAT DAY TO SOLVE A
MYSTERY.
E.B. is in his mid-teens with curly brown hair in an afro and he wears jeans, a yellow T-shirt and an unbuttoned plaid shirt.
He says LET'S SEE, UH... YEAH.
THIS ONE'S CALLING OUT TO ME.
"SHOW AND TELL." NICE.
He opens the file and says WHAT DO YOU THINK, KYLA?
(humming)
ALL RIGHT, KYLA?
YOOHOO, KYLA?
Kyla is checking her phone.
Kyla is in her mid-teens, with long slightly wavy brown hair. She wears jeans and a printed jacket.
Kyla says SORRY, SORRY. WE JUST
GOT A MESSAGE ON OUR WEBSITE
FROM A GIRL NAMED EMMA.
E.B. says WHAT DID SHE SAY?
Kyla says 7H15, GR AND
THE NUMBER 8. THX, MA.
E.B. says I DON'T HAVE A CLUE
ABOUT IT, BUT WE DO HAVE
THREE CLUES FOR OUR MYSTERY,
"SHOW AND TELL."
Kyla says OOH. I LOVE SHOW-AND-TELL.
THIS LOOKS COOL. OKAY, CLASS.
FOR OUR SHOW-AND-TELL TODAY,
I'VE BROUGHT THIS... CROWN.
She grabs a sign with a strange symbol.
E.B. says NO. THAT IS OBVIOUSLY...
A CHANDELIER.
Kyla says AND AS QUEEN OF THIS
CASTLE, I'LL RESEARCH THIS CROWN
AND PROVE YOU WRONG.
E.B. says OKAY. NOW CHECK THIS
OUT. WOAH. WHAT IN... THIS LOOKS
LIKE A MAP. BON ECHO CREEK.
YEAH! I'LL BET THIS IS
FROM BON ECHO PARK. IT'S
A PROVINCIAL PARK NEAR HERE.
Kyla says AND LOOK AT THAT
STRANGE STICK FIGURE. WEIRD.
She grabs a card with a "jazz hands" emoji and says JAZZ HANDS? WHAT DO JAZZ HANDS
HAVE TO DO WITH THE MYSTERY
OF "SHOW AND TELL"?
E.B. says I DON'T KNOW. UNLESS
HERMIONE WAS TRYING TO SHOW US
HOW TO SOLVE MYSTERIES
BROADWAY-STYLE.
HA-HA! TIME TO INVESTIGATE.
Music plays as the opening of the show rolls.
A song goes HISTORY IS FULL OF MYSTERIES
GREAT AUNT HERMIONE
COULD BE HEARD TO SAY
Aunt Hermione stands next to a knight's armour. She's in her fifties, with short white hair and wears glasses, beige trousers, a belted white short-sleeved shirt, an explorer's hat. She carries a cross-body bag.
The song goes YOU HAVE TO KNOW
WHAT CAME BEFORE
TO NAVIGATE THE WORLD TODAY
Clips show images of power lines, an abacus and a computer.
The song continues SHE WAS GOING TO WRITE A BOOK
CALLED "MYSTERY FILES."
TO TELL WHAT SHE UNCOVERED
BUT TIME RAN OUT
NEW ADVENTURES CAME FIRST
SO SHE LEFT HER SECRETS
UNDISCOVERED
She writes down notes on a notebook, holds a globe, travels by jeep, flies an airplane.
The song continues ALL SHE LEFT BEHIND
WAS A HOUSE FULL OF CLUES
BUT E.B. AND KYLA HAVE A PLAN
In the basement, a drawer in a chest opens and random objects come out.
The song continues THEY'RE GONNA SOLVE
EACH MYSTERY FILE
AND FINISH
WHAT HERMIONE BEGAN
THEY'LL SOLVE
E.B. and Kyla appear looking through Hermione's notes.
The song continues THE MYSTERY FILES
UNRAVEL ALL THE MYSTERIES
THEY'LL SOLVE
THE MYSTERY FILES
UPLOAD HIDDEN HISTORIES
THEY'LL SOLVE
THE MYSTERY FILES
E.B. and Kyla high-five.
The title of the show reads "The Mystery Files."
E.B. says I'M FOLLOWING AUNT HERMIONE'S
MAP THROUGH BON ECHO PARK
TO THIS STRANGE STICK FIGURE
TO SEE WHAT IT'LL UNCOVER ABOUT
THE MYSTERY OF "SHOW AND TELL."
Lisa is in her forties, with short straight light brown hair. She wears a ranger's uniform.
Lisa says HI. IT'S NICE
TO FINALLY MEET YOU.
E.B. says NICE TO MEET YOU TOO. LISA?
Lisa says YES IT IS.
E.B. says I'M TRYING TO SOLVE A MYSTERY
THAT BEGINS WITH THIS MAP, AND
I WAS WONDERING IF YOU KNOW WHAT
THIS STICK FIGURE IS MARKING.
Lisa says I CAN SHOW YOU. FOLLOW ME.
They walk to a peer and get on a pontoon boat.
E.B. says OKAY. ALL RIGHT. COOL.
WOW. THAT'S AWESOME.
THAT CLIFF IS HUGE!
Lisa says IT IS. WE HAVE REALLY
GOOD ECHOES, OR ACOUSTIC
PROPERTIES, ON THE CLIFF. WOULD
YOU LIKE TO GIVE IT A TRY?
E.B. shouts ICE CREAM!
(echoes)
Lisa laughs.
E.B. says I JUST HEARD MYSELF SAY,
"ICE CREAM," THREE TIMES.
OH MY GOODNESS.
Lisa says AND PROBABLY A LOT OF
OTHER PEOPLE HEARD YOU AS WELL.
E.B. says YEAH. I MEAN, I'M SURE
THEY DON'T MIND, BECAUSE
EVERYONE LOVES ICE CREAM.
Lisa says THAT'S TRUE.
E.B. says YEAH.
WOW. THIS IS SO IMPRESSIVE!
Lisa says IT IS REALLY IMPRESSIVE.
AND IT'S ALSO A SACRED PLACE
FOR FIRST NATIONS PEOPLE.
E.B. says OH, REALLY?
Lisa says UH-HUH.
E.B. says WOW.
Lisa says SO IT'S THOUGHT TO BE
A REALLY POWERFUL PLACE.
E.B. says I BET. IT FEELS POWERFUL
JUST BEING HERE.
Lisa says UH-HUH. AND A PLACE THEN
WITH A LOT OF SPIRITS.
E.B. says HEY! IS THAT ARTWORK?
Lisa says YES, THAT'S RIGHT.
E.B. says WOW. OKAY, I GET IT. SO,
BECAUSE IT'S A SACRED PLACE,
THAT'S MAYBE WHY SOME PEOPLE
WOULD'VE DRAWN SOME STUFF
ON THE ROCK?
Lisa says THAT'S TRUE. AND THIS IS
ALSO PART OF A CANOE ROUTE,
SO A LOT OF PEOPLE WOULD'VE
BEEN TRAVELING BY THIS CLIFF.
AND ACTUALLY IF YOU LOOK AT
THAT PICTOGRAPH UNDER THE
TWO ANIMALS, IT'S SAID TO BE
A CANOE WITH PEOPLE OR SPIRITS.
E.B. says IT LOOKS PRETTY OLD.
Lisa says OH... THEY SAY SOME OF
THEM COULD BE ABOUT 300 YEARS
OLD. SOME MIGHT GO ALL THE WAY
TO ABOUT A THOUSAND YEARS OLD.
E.B. says OH MY GOODNESS!
Lisa says SO, E.B., DO YOU SEE THAT
PICTOGRAPH RIGHT OVER THERE?
E.B. says WAIT A MINUTE... YUP.
THAT'S IT. THAT'S THE PICTURE
FROM GREAT AUNT HERMIONE'S MAP.
WHO IS THAT?
Lisa says IT'S THOUGHT TO BE A
SPIRIT CALLED NANABUSH. NANABUSH
IS A SPIRIT WHO TAUGHT PEOPLE
THE RIGHT THINGS TO DO.
HOW TO HUNT, FISH. ALWAYS TAUGHT
LESSONS. AND SOME PEOPLE SAY
THAT IT CAN TURN ITSELF
INTO ANYTHING IT WANTS TO BE,
INCLUDING A RABBIT.
E.B. says I HAVE TO SHOW KYLA.
Kyla says HI, E.B.
Kyla is painting a sign.
E.B. says KYLA. KYLA. LOOK.
LOOK, LOOK, LOOK. LOOK AT WHAT
THE STICK FIGURE WAS MARKING
ON AUNT HERMIONE'S MAP.
Kyla says UH-HUH.
E.B. says UH-UH! SORRY TO INTERRUPT YOU
WITH MY AMAZING DISCOVERY.
Kyla says OH, WOW!
WHAT ARE THOSE DRAWINGS?
E.B. says THEY'RE FIRST
NATIONS PICTOGRAPHS.
Kyla says NO WAY!
E.B. says ARE YOU RESEARCHING
THAT CHANDELIER CLUE?
Kyla says YOU MEAN THE CROWN CLUE?
AND NO I WASN'T, BUT THANKS
FOR REMINDING ME. I'LL GET BACK
TO THAT WHEN I'M DONE WITH THIS.
E.B. says YOU ARE OBSESSED WITH
THAT MESSAGE! WE'VE GOT ANOTHER
MYSTERY TO SOLVE. REMEMBER?
"SHOW AND TELL"?
Kyla says I HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN.
CHECK THIS OUT.
She plays an animated video and says I FOUND OUT THAT PEOPLE HAVE
BEEN USING SIGNS AND MARKINGS
SINCE THE BEGINNING
OF HUMAN HISTORY.
SOME OF THE EARLIEST WERE CAVE
PAINTINGS. MAYBE THEY WERE
A KIND OF SHOW-AND-TELL.
THE OLDEST CAVE PAINTING EVER
COMES FROM INDONESIA.
IT'S AT LEAST 35,400 YEARS OLD.
IT WAS SO OLD THEY HADN'T EVEN
INVENTED REGULAR PAINT AND
BRUSHES YET. ALL OVER THE WORLD,
EARLY HUMANS FINGER-PAINTED
WITH OCHRE, A NATURAL PIGMENT
FROM THE EARTH. THE COLOUR OF IT
RANGES FROM DEEP ORANGE TO RED
TO BROWNISH-YELLOW.
She paints her cheek while painting the sig.
She says OOPS. LUCKY ALL I'M USING
IS WATER-COLOUR.
E.B. says YOU KNOW WHAT? I THINK THAT
LOOK ACTUALLY WORKS FOR YOU.
HEY, DO YOU THINK AUNT HERMIONE
WAS TRYING TO SAY THAT CAVE ART
WAS THE FIRST SHOW-AND-TELL?
Kyla says I'M NOT SO SURE. HOW DOES
THAT EXPLAIN THE OTHER CLUES?
E.B. says IT DOESN'T. BUT MAYBE...
THESE PAINTINGS WERE DRAWN
IN OCHRE, WHICH LASTS A REALLY
LONG TIME, AND WAS PUT ON A BUSY
WATERWAY TO SHOW PEOPLE THE WAY.
LIKE A... LIKE A STREET SIGN.
THAT SECOND CLUE COULD BE
A STREET SIGN, SHOWING
PEOPLE THE WAY, TOO.
Kyla says WHAT'S IT SUPPOSED
TO TELL ME? ROYALTY AHEAD?
E.B. says NO, SILLY. IT'S OBVIOUSLY
A SIGN FOR A LIGHT SHOP.
Kyla says THEN HOW DOES
THE EMOJI FIT IN?
E.B. says NOT SURE. BUT I THINK THAT
COULD BE SOME KIND OF A SIGN.
Kyla says I'LL CHECK IT OUT.
E.B. says AND I'LL CHECK
MY THEORY WITH LISA.
Kyla says SEE YA.
E.B. says LISA, CAN YOU TELL ME MORE
ABOUT THESE PICTOGRAPHS? I HAVE
A THEORY THAT THEY WERE MEANT
TO SHOW BOAT TRAVELERS THE WAY.
Lisa says YOU MIGHT THINK THAT,
BUT IN FACT THEY TELL STORIES.
E.B. says OH, OKAY.
Lisa says IT'S THOUGHT THAT THESE ARE
RECORDS OF VISIONS OR DREAMS...
E.B. says OH!
Lisa says THAT SOME NATIVE
PEOPLE HAD WHILE THEY WERE HERE.
NO ONE REALLY KNOWS FOR SURE
WHAT EACH PICTOGRAPH MEANT TO
THE ORIGINAL PAINTER. A LOT OF
THINGS WERE NEVER WRITTEN DOWN.
THEY WERE JUST PASSED ON ORALLY.
AND A LOT OF THAT INFORMATION'S
BEEN LOST.
Lisa says SO, E.B., WE SAW SOME
OF THE PICTOGRAPHS...
E.B. says RIGHT.
Lisa says AND LEARNED A LITTLE BIT
ABOUT WHAT THE PAINT IS MADE OF.
E.B. says UH-HUH.
Lisa shows him a rock and says SO THIS IS CALLED
HEMATITE. INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
WOULD CRUSH IT INTO A POWDER.
E.B. says OKAY.
Lisa says AND THEN THEY MAY HAVE
MIXED IT WITH WATER OR BEAR
GREASE EVEN, OR EVEN FISH OIL...
E.B. says BEAR GREASE?
WHAT'S BEAR GREASE?
Lisa says IT'S JUST GREASE FROM
A BEAR AFTER IT'S BEEN KILLED.
E.B. says OH, OKAY.
Lisa says AND THEY MIX THAT...
E.B. says OKAY.
Lisa says OR THE FISH OIL OR
WATER WITH THE CRUSHED HEMATITE
POWDER. AND THAT'S OCHRE.
E.B. says WOW!
E.B. starts painting with the mix.
E.B.'s phone rings.
E.B. says HEY, KYLA. I GOT A LITTLE...
SHOW-AND-TELL
FOR YOU, HUH?
Kyla says THAT'S AWESOME! AND
GUESS WHAT? YOU WERE RIGHT ABOUT
CLUE TWO. IT IS A STREET SIGN. I
FOUND THE WORD "MAXIMUM" ON THE
BACK AND FIGURED OUT IT'S FOR
A COMPANY CALLED MAXIMUM SIGNS.
E.B. says COOL. BUT I'M STARTING
TO THINK OUR "SHOW AND TELL."
MYSTERY ISN'T JUST ABOUT
STREET SIGNS SHOWING PEOPLE
THE WAY ANYMORE.
I THINK IT HAS SOMETHING
TO DO WITH CULTURAL STORIES.
Kyla says WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT?
E.B. says WELL, THE PICTOGRAPHS
TOLD IMPORTANT TALES ABOUT THE
CULTURES OF THE ALGONQUIN AND
OJIBWE PEOPLE THAT PAINTED THEM.
Kyla says SO WHAT DID YOU
UNDERSTAND ABOUT THEIR CULTURE?
E.B. says THAT I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND
IT. THE STORIES WERE COMPLETELY
DIFFERENT FROM WHAT I THOUGHT
THEY WERE SAYING.
Kyla says WELL, I'M OFF TO MAXIMUM
SIGNS, SO I'LL SEE IF I CAN PUT
YOUR THEORY TO THE TEST THERE.
E.B. says GOOD LUCK. AND I'LL
GET STARTED ON EMOJI RESEARCH.
WHO KNOWS HOW THAT FITS IN.
Kyla records a video and says I'M AT MAXIMUM SIGNS
TO PROVE THAT THIS IS A CROWN,
AND THAT MAKES ME QUEEN MYSTERY
SOLVER. OH, AND ALSO TO FIND OUT
MORE ABOUT THE MYSTERY
OF "SHOW AND TELL."
HELLO?
She enters an office and meets Tyler.
Tyler is in his forties, balding and with a goatee. He wears glasses, jeans and a blue polo shirt.
Tyler says OH. HI, KYLA. I'M TYLER.
Kyla says NICE TO MEET YOU. I WAS
WONDERING IF YOU COULD TELL ME
WHAT THIS IS. PERSONALLY,
I THINK IT'S A CROWN, BUT
E.B. THINKS IT'S A CHANDELIER.
Tyler says HMM... COME WITH ME.
LET ME SHOW YOU.
Tyler takes her to the manufacturing room.
Kyla says WOAH. THIS LOOKS AWESOME.
Tyler shoes her other signs and says SO, KYLA, DO THESE
GIVE YOU ANY IDEAS?
Kyla says WELL, THESE LOOK LIKE
BOATS. THIS LOOKS LIKE WATER.
SO... OH! IT'S NOT A CROWN.
IT'S AN ANCHOR.
Tyler says YES.
Kyla says SO THIS SIGN TELLS
PEOPLE WHERE BOATS CAN ANCHOR.
ARE SIGNS LIKE THIS
THE SAME EVERYWHERE?
Tyler says SIGNS ARE USUALLY
DESIGNED TO BE UNIVERSALLY
UNDERSTOOD. HOWEVER, SOME SIGNS
ARE DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY
FOR A COUNTRY AND-OR CULTURE.
Kyla says HUH. PICTOGRAPHS. JUST
LIKE THE ONES IN BON ECHO PARK.
Tyler says YEAH. PICTOGRAPHS
LIKE THESE QUICKLY COMMUNICATE
IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO DRIVERS
AS THE CARS GO FLYING BY.
FOR EXAMPLE...
Kyla says DEER CROSSING.
Tyler says CORRECT.
Kyla says BUS STOP?
Tyler says YES.
Kyla says SORRY. HEY, E.B.
E.B. says HEY, KYLA. I WAS WRONG
ABOUT THE EMOJI. SOME PEOPLE
ONLINE ARE SAYING THAT IT'S
THE "HUG FACE." WEIRD.
Kyla says I KNOW. AND I WAS ALSO
WRONG ABOUT THE CROWN SIGN.
E.B. says HAH! I KNEW
IT WAS A CHANDELIER.
Kyla says ACTUALLY, IT'S AN
ANCHOR. AND IT'S PUT IN AREAS
WERE BOATS CAN PARK.
E.B. says HUH. THIS MYSTERY'S FULL
OF MISTAKEN IDENTITIES. I MEAN,
I THOUGHT THE PICTOGRAPHS SAID
ONE THING, BUT THEY ACTUALLY
MEANT ANOTHER. THE CROWN-SLASH-
CHANDELIER TURNED OUT TO BE AN
ANCHOR, AND NOW THE JAZZ HANDS
EMOJI MAY BE A HUG?
Kyla says YEAH. AND IT'S STRANGE
BECAUSE EACH CLUE IS A SIGN
OR SYMBOL THAT SHOULD BE REALLY
CLEAR, BUT OUR FIRST GUESSES
WERE TOTALLY OFF TRACK.
E.B. says YOU'D THINK, RIGHT?
WELL, CHECK THIS OUT. I'VE
FOUND SOMETHING SUPER-FUNNY
THAT I THINK MIGHT HELP.
E.B. plays an animated video where he's in a car.
He says EVER SEEN A SIGN LIKE THIS?
A sign with a kangaroo on appears.
Kyla says NO.
E.B. says THEY'RE REALLY COMMON
IN AUSTRALIA TO WARN DRIVERS
A KANGAROO MIGHT HOP
IN THEIR PATH.
Kyla says HUH.
E.B. says AND WHAT ABOUT THIS?
Another sign appears with a show with a broken heel.
E.B. says IT'S TO WARN WOMEN IN DENMARK
THE COBBLED STREETS MIGHT
BREAK THEIR SHOES.
Kyla says WOW. THAT WAS TOTALLY
MY NEXT GUESS. YEAH.
E.B. says DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS IS?
A sign of a hand coming out of a hole appears.
Kyla says A SIGN OF A ZOMBIE INVASION?
E.B. says WRONG. IT'S A SIGN
FROM FINLAND, WARNING AGAINST
THIN ICE. I KNOW THEY LOOK
WEIRD TO US, RIGHT? BUT
THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THOSE
COUNTRIES TOTALLY GET THEM.
Kyla says SO IF WHERE YOU LIVE
IS SO IMPORTANT, THEN HOW COME
YOU DIDN'T GET THE PICTOGRAPHS
AT BON ECHO PARK IF YOU LIVE
ONLY A FEW HOURS AWAY
IN THE SAME COUNTRY?
E.B. says MAYBE BECAUSE I'M NOT PART OF
AN ANCIENT FIRST NATIONS TRIBE.
I THINK IT'S NOT JUST
ABOUT WHERE YOU LIVE,
BUT WHEN YOU LIVE.
Kyla says SO ROAD SIGNS WORK
BECAUSE WE UNDERSTAND THE AREA
AND THE MEANING OF THE PICTURE.
THANKS, E.B.
E.B. says COOL. SEE YOU LATER.
Kyla says I WAS WONDERING...
MAYBE, DO YOU THINK I CAN
HELP YOU MAKE A SIGN?
Tyler says YEAH, SURE. COME OVER
WITH ME TO THE LASER CUTTER.
Kyla says YEAH.
I RECOGNIZE THAT SHAPE.
IT'S FOR A STOP SIGN, RIGHT?
Tyler says YES, EXACTLY. CUT THEM.
She watches the sign being cut by the laser and says OH, WOW! I SEE THE LASER.
IT'S CUTTING OCTAGON SHAPES.
SO WHY ARE STOP SIGNS
OCTAGON SHAPED?
Tyler says OCTAGON HAS EIGHT
SIDES, AND IT INDICATES DANGER.
IT'S THE ONLY SIGN
THAT HAS EIGHT SIDES.
Kyla says WHEN IT COMES TO ROAD SIGNS,
SHAPES AND COLOURS ARE SUPER-
IMPORTANT. RECTANGLES ARE FOR
DIRECTIONS, AND THEY'RE USUALLY
GREEN. YELLOW DIAMONDS WARN YOU
TO BE CAREFUL AHEAD. AN ORANGE
SIGN MEANS THERE'S CONSTRUCTION.
AND A RED SIGN MEANS STOP OR
DANGER. SO EVEN WHEN A SIGN
IS TOO FAR WAY TO READ,
A DRIVER CAN STILL TELL
WHAT'S COMING UP BY THE SHAPE
AND COLOUR OF THE SIGN. THAT
GIVES ME AN IDEA FOR A SIGN.
TA-DA!
She shows him a sign with a boy, a girl and a magnifying glass.
Tyler says OH, GOOD JOB.
IS IT A DETECTIVE SIGN?
Kyla says YES, IT'S ME AND E.B.
SOLVING A MYSTERY.
Tyler says WHAT DOES "7H 15" MEAN?
Kyla says THAT'S ANOTHER MYSTERY
I'M TRYING TO SOLVE. SEE?
Tyler says I DON'T KNOW, BUT
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR MYSTERY.
Kyla says THANKS.
E.B. says I'M ON MY WAY TO MEET
DEBBIE - SHE'S A GRAPHIC ARTIST
AND AN EMOJI EXPERT - TO FIND
OUT MORE ABOUT OUR JAZZY, HUG
EMOJI. WHO KNOWS WHY HERMIONE
PUT IT IN HER MYSTERY FILE
LABELED "SHOW AND TELL"?
Debbie says HI, E.B.
Debbie is in her forties, with long slightly wavy blond hair. She wears glasses, gray trousers and a tie die top.
E.B. says HI, DEBBIE. NICE TO MEET YOU.
Debbie says NICE TO MEET YOU TOO.
COME ON IN.
Debbie shows him to her studio.
E.B. says OH... LOOK AT ALL
THIS STUFF. SWEET. EMOJIS.
SINCE YOU'RE A GRAPHIC ARTIST,
I'M GONNA SEND YOU ONE. THINK
YOU CAN TELL ME WHAT IT MEANS?
Debbie says OH, ABSOLUTELY. OF COURSE.
E.B. says AND... SENT.
Debbie gets the image and says RECEIVED. BACK TO YOU.
E.B. says OH. HUG. OKAY.
THAT MAKES... THAT MAKES SENSE.
Debbie says WHAT DID YOU THINK IT MEANT?
E.B. says WELL, I THOUGHT IT WAS
LIKE... LIKE JAZZ HANDS.
LIKE, I'M TRYING TO SOLVE
A MYSTERY THAT I THINK IS
ABOUT CULTURE AND SIGNS...
Debbie says WELL YOU PICKED
A GOOD EXAMPLE FOR THAT. THAT
PARTICULAR EMOJI MEANS "HUG" IN
JAPANESE, WHICH IS WHERE IT WAS
CREATED. BUT IN THE WEST IT
ACTUALLY MEANS "JAZZ HANDS."
TO A LOT OF PEOPLE, EVEN THOUGH
THAT WASN'T THE ORIGINAL INTENT.
E.B. says I FOUND OUT THAT "EMOJI."
IS A MASH-UP OF THE JAPANESE
WORDS "E," WHICH MEANS
"PICTURE," AND "MOJI," WHICH
MEANS CHARACTER. SO AN "EMOJI."
IS KIND OF LIKE A PICTOGRAPH,
JUST LIKE OUR CAVE ART AND BOAT
SIGN CLUE. THERE ARE THOUSANDS
OF EMOJIS THAT PEOPLE CAN USE
ON THEIR PHONES, TABLETS, AND
COMPUTERS. AND EVERY COUNTRY
HAS ITS FAVOURITE EMOJI.
Debbie shows E.B. a board with 8 emojis.
She says MAYBE WE CAN PLAY A GAME
WHERE YOU GUESS WHICH COUNTRY
USES THESE MOST COMMONLY.
E.B. says I DO LOVE GAMES.
WELL, LET'S TRY THIS ONE.
E.B. says OKAY, SO, THE PIZZA...
MAYBE ITALY?
Debbie says WELL...
E.B. says I HEAR THE PIZZA'S
PRETTY NICE THERE.
Debbie says YEAH, IT'S LOGICAL,
BUT IT'S WRONG.
E.B. says AMERICA?
Debbie says YOU GOT IT.
Debbie and E.B. laugh.
Debbie says OKAY, AND LET'S...
LET'S TRY THE HEART.
E.B. says OKAY, UM...
I'M THINKING, MAYBE, SPAIN OR...
NO, NO, NO. MAYBE FRANCE,
BECAUSE FRENCH IS
THE LANGUAGE OF LOVE.
Debbie says YOU HIT THAT ONE
RIGHT ON THE MARK.
E.B. says WOO! OKAY.
Debbie says OKAY. AND MAYBE
FOR A THIRD ONE? WHAT ABOUT
THIS LITTLE NUMBER HERE?
E.B. says HOW ABOUT AUSTRALIA,
BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT OF
ANIMALS, WHICH MEANS THAT
THERE'S A LOT OF POOP.
Debbie says WELL, NICE TRY, BUT NO.
E.B. says UM...
Debbie says IT'S CANADA.
E.B. says CANADA? NO WAY. HOLD ON.
I GOTTA TELL THIS TO KYLA.
He calls Kyla.
Kyla says HI, E.B.
E.B. says KYLA, GUESS WHAT COUNTRY
USES THIS EMOJI THE MOST?
Kyla says EWW! POOP! DISGUSTING.
E.B. says WE DO.
E.B. laughs.
E.B. says WE... WE USE THE
POOP EMOJI THE MOST!
(still laughing)
Kyla says BUT YOU KNOW WHAT'S
NOT DISGUSTING? THE MESSAGE
FROM EMMA. I THINK I'M CLOSER
TO FIGURING IT OUT.
E.B. says DON'T YOU REMEMBER WE
HAVE ANOTHER MYSTERY TO SOLVE?
Kyla says I HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN.
I'VE ALSO BEEN DOING
SOME DIGGING ON EMOJIS.
BEFORE EMOJIS, THERE WERE
EMOTICONS. AN EMOTICON IS WHERE
YOU USE LETTERS AND SYMBOLS ON A
KEYBOARD TO MAKE A FACE SO YOU
CAN TELL SOMEONE HOW YOU FEEL.
Kyla appears making different faces with the correspondent emoticons next.
She says LIKE THIS WINKING ONE IF YOU'RE
JUST JOKING AROUND. BACK IN
1982, A COMPUTER SCIENTIST HAD A
GREAT IDEA: FACES COULD HELP US
FIGURE OUT WHAT A JOKE WAS AND
WHAT WAS SERIOUS ONLINE. WE CALL
THEM "EMOTICONS." A MIX OF
THE WORD "EMOTION" AND "ICON."
E.B. says SO THE DIFFERENCE IS
AN EMOTICON DESCRIBES HOW
SOMEONE FEELS, BUT AN EMOJI
CAN
BE
THE MESSAGE.
Kyla says YES! LIKE HOW I'D
SEND YOU THIS... IF I WANTED
TO SAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
E.B. says NICE. OKAY, SO
I UNDERSTAND THE "SHOW" PART
OF THE MYSTERY FILE TAG...
Kyla says ME TOO. ALL OF THE CLUES
HAVE LED US TO SYMBOLS
THAT SHOW THINGS.
E.B. says UH-HUH. BUT WHAT
ABOUT THE "TELL" PART?
Kyla says EVEN WHEN YOU'RE TRYING
TO MAKE COMMUNICATION EASIER,
IT JUST GETS HARDER.
E.B. sighs.
E.B. says I'M GONNA SEE IF
OUR EMOJI EXPERT CAN HELP.
SO, DEBBIE, DO YOU THINK
EMOJIS MAKE COMMUNICATION
EASIER OR HARDER?
Debbie says I'D PROBABLY SAY BOTH.
FOR A SIMPLE MESSAGE YOU COULD
POSSIBLY JUST USE EMOJIS, BUT
THEY DON'T ALWAYS TELL THE WHOLE
STORY. TYPICALLY AN EMOJI OR AN
EMOTICON IS USED TO EMBELLISH
A TEXT MESSAGE, SO THAT YOU GIVE
MORE MEANING TO YOUR MESSAGE
OR EVEN MORE EMOTION
TO YOUR MESSAGE.
E.B. says OKAY.
Debbie says I HAVE AN IDEA. WHY
DON'T WE PLAY ONE MORE GAME?
E.B. says SURE.
Debbie says SO, E.B., WHY DON'T
I TAKE A TURN FIRST AND MAKE
A MESSAGE AND SEE WHETHER YOU
CAN GUESS WHAT I'M THINKING OF.
Debbie combines 3 emojis: a key, a car and a basketball.
E.B. says MAYBE... YOU LOCKED YOUR
KEYS IN YOUR CAR, SO THEN YOU'RE
LIKE, "YOU KNOW WHAT? FORGET
DRIVING TO THE GROCERY STORE.
I'M JUST GONNA GO PLAY
BASKETBALL AT THE PARK INSTEAD."
Debbie says INTERESTING. YOU
CERTAINLY GOT SOME OF THE
KEY
THOUGHTS. KEY, PARDON THE PUN.
SO WHAT IF I ADD SOMETHING
EMOTIONAL TO IT...
E.B. says OOH...
Debbie says LIKE THAT?
She adds a sad emoji.
E.B. says OKAY. YOU DON'T LIKE
KEYS, SO YOU GOT A CAR THAT
DOESN'T NEED A KEY TO DRIVE.
INSTEAD IT'S A BASKETBALL.
INSTEAD OF THE KEY.
Debbie says WELL, YOU MIGHT HAVE
BEEN CLOSER THE FIRST TIME.
E.B. laughs.
E.B. says I THINK SO TOO.
Debbie says SO WHAT I WAS TRYING
TO SAY IS... AND YOU HAD THE
FIRST PART RIGHT. I LOCKED
MY KEYS IN THE CAR WHEN I WENT
TO THE BASKETBALL PRACTICE.
E.B. says OH.
Debbie says BY ADDING THE SAD FACE
I WAS ACTUALLY HOPING TO MAKE IT
CLEARER FOR YOU SO THAT YOU KNEW
I WAS UNHAPPY ABOUT SOMETHING.
SO, E.B., I GUESS WHAT THIS GAME
DEMONSTRATES MORE THAN ANYTHING
IS THAT YOU CAN CERTAINLY
SEND MESSAGES THAT ONLY
CONTAIN EMOJIS...
E.B. says UH-HUH.
Debbie says BUT IT'S KIND OF
DEPENDENT ON WHO YOU ARE,
WHO YOU'RE SENDING IT TO, AND
WHAT YOU UNDERSTAND THE MESSAGE
TO BE CAN BE COMPLETELY
MISUNDERSTOOD AT THE OTHER END.
E.B. says YEAH.
Debbie says SO IT'S ESSENTIALLY LOTS OF...
MISINTERPRETATIONS CAN HAPPEN
WHEN YOU'RE DOING IT THIS WAY.
E.B. says WELL, YOU KNOW, DEBBIE,
AT FIRST I WAS A BIT...
He holds up a question mark emoji and says A BIT
CONFUSED,
BUT NOW I FINALLY
THINK I KNOW WHAT AUNT HERMIONE
WAS TRYING TO
SAY.
He holds up a man speaking emoji.
E.B. and Debbie laugh.
He says THANK YOU SO MUCH
FOR ALL YOUR HELP.
Debbie says HEY, YOU'RE SO WELCOME.
IT WAS FUN. I'M GLAD TO HELP.
Kyla's phone rings.
Kyla grabs his phone and says HUH? A FIST AND A DOOR?
E.B. says I WAS SAYING, "KNOCK, KNOCK,"
BECAUSE I WAS RIGHT OUTSIDE.
Kyla says BUT WERE YOU OUTSIDE
WITH THE ANSWER TO THE MYSTERY?
E.B. says I THINK SO.
Kyla says COOL. OKAY, SO I KNOW THE
"SHOW" PART OF OUR MYSTERY IS
WHAT ALL THE CLUES WERE DOING.
E.B. says YUP. THE CAVE ART
SHOWED STORIES. THE STREET SIGN
SHOWED THE WAY. AND THE EMOJI
SHOWED ALL SORTS OF MESSAGES.
BUT THEN WHAT ABOUT THE
"TELL" PART OF THE MYSTERY?
Kyla says I KNOW! MAYBE HERMIONE
MEANT THAT WHEN YOU
SHOW
PICTURES YOU CAN
TELL
A STORY.
E.B. says YEAH. BUT NOT ALWAYS.
LIKE THE REAL MEANING OF THE
BON ECHO DRAWINGS MIGHT ONLY BE
KNOWN TO FIRST NATIONS ELDERS.
Kyla says THAT'S TRUE! AND
EMOJIS HAVE DIFFERENT MEANING
TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE. EVEN
STREET SIGNS CAN BE CONFUSING.
E.B. says I THINK WHAT HERMIONE
WAS TRYING TO TELL US IS THAT
A PICTURE CAN TELL A STORY, BUT
IF YOU WANT THE FULL PICTURE,
YOU STILL NEED WORDS.
Kyla says YES! GOOD JOB.
E.B. says YES!
Kyla says COOL.
They high-five.
E.B. says OH, BY THE WAY, I
FIGURED OUT YOUR EMMA MYSTERY.
UH-HUH. IT'S LEETSPEAK.
Kyla says LEE-WHAT?
E.B. says LEETSPEAK. IT'S A CODE
WHERE YOU REPLACE LETTERS
WITH NUMBERS. CHECK IT OUT.
THE 7 LOOKS KIND OF LIKE A "T,"
AND THE 15 LOOKS LIKE "IS."
Kyla says OH! I SEE IT NOW.
E.B. says SO IT'S SAYING, "THIS IS...
They both say ...GREAT.
THANKS, EMMA."
E.B. says YEAH. SHE'S
COMPLIMENTING OUR WEBSITE.
Kyla says COOL!
E.B. says UH-HUH.
Kyla says BUT HOW'D YOU WORK IT OUT?
E.B. says UH, WELL,
I CALLED AND ASKED HER.
Kyla says WHAT?
E.B. says HEY, HEY, SOMETIMES
IT'S BEST TO USE YOUR WORDS.
YEAH.
Kyla says THAT'S CHEATING.
E.B. says IT'S NOT CHEATING.
IT'S MORE OF, LIKE, A...
A LITTLE, LITTLE HINT.
They post a video and say MYSTERY SOLVED! POSTING
TO
THE MYSTERY FILES
WEBSITE.
Music plays as the end credits roll.
Cast, Ethan Burnett as E.B. and Kyla Madeira as Kyla.
Producers, Jean-Louis Coté and Joan Taketman.
Director, Zsolt Luka.
An Apartment 11 production.
Produced in association with TVO Kids.
Logo: TVO Kids.
The clip ends.
Arianna says HOW COOL WAS THAT?
IN THAT EPISODE
OF
THE MYSTERY FILES,
WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY
TO LEARN ABOUT PICTOGRAPHS
AND STREET SIGNS, EMOJIS,
AND REALLY THE POWER OF USING
IMAGES TO TELL STORIES.
PICTURES ARE POWERFUL.
WE ALSO LEARNED THAT ADDING
WORDS TO YOUR PICTURES
HELPS YOUR READER TO UNDERSTAND
YOUR WORK IN A CLEARER WAY.
WAIT-
She chuckles and says THIS REMINDS ME,
WE WERE WORKING
ON TELLING THE STORIES
OF OUR MEMORABLE MOMENTS.
SO, LET'S CONTINUE.
WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO IS I WANT
YOU TO TURN YOUR PAPER OVER.
REMEMBER WE WERE BRAINSTORMING
A LITTLE WHILE AGO
ABOUT OUR MEMORABLE MOMENT.
WHEN WE GOT TO THE "WHAT,"
I ASKED YOU TO THINK
ABOUT YOUR MEMORABLE MOMENT
FROM THE BEGINNING TO END
AND TO DO THAT
IN ABOUT FIVE SIMPLE STEPS.
WELL,
NOW WE'RE GONNA BE USING
SOME OF WHAT WE LEARNED FROM
E.B. AND KYLA ABOUT PICTURES
AND WE'RE GONNA USE IMAGES
TO BE ABLE TO HELP US
TELL THIS STORY
OF OUR MEMORABLE MOMENT.
WE'RE GONNA DO THIS
BY CREATING A STORYBOARD.
WHAT'S A STORYBOARD,
YOU ASK?
GREAT QUESTION.
STORYBOARDS ARE USED
IN A VARIETY OF INDUSTRIES
TO QUICKLY TELL THE STORY
OF SOMETHING.
THEY CAN BE USED WHEN CREATING
COMICS OR WHEN MAKING MOVIES.
IT'S BASICALLY A VISUAL
OF WHAT HAPPENS IN A STORY,
HELPING YOU TO UNDERSTAND
THE BEGINNING,
THE MIDDLE, AND THE END.
HERE'S MIKAELA TO HELP US
GET A GREATER UNDERSTANDING
OF STORYBOARDS IN THIS EPISODE
OF
WHEN I GROW UP.
LET'S TAKE A LOOK.
Mikaela pops up against a colourful animated background. She's around 12, with mid-length curly brown hair, and wears a blue sweater.
[whoosh]
(music plays)
She says MY NAME'S MIKAELA, AND SINCE
I CAN REMEMBER,
I'VE DREAMT ABOUT WHAT I'LL BE
WHEN I GROW UP!
THERE ARE SO MANY COOL JOBS,
SO I DECIDED TO TRY THEM ALL.
In animation, gear from different jobs appears on her: an astronaut's helmet, a construction worker's vest and helmet, a chef's hat and apron, and a police officer's hat and badge.
She says I BUILT AN AWESOME STUDIO IN
MY GARAGE,
SO I CAN MAKE AND SHARE VIDEOS
ABOUT MY JOURNEY.
She pops up in her garage. The place has a multi-coloured tile floor, hangers with different uniforms, a bike, a desk, and a colourful back wall with a graffiti that reads "When I grow up!"
She says IT'S ALL ABOUT DISCOVERING
WHAT I'LL BE
WHEN I GROW UP!
The name of the show appears in purple surrounded by colourful silhouettes of different animals and shapes. It reads "When I grow up."
A film countdown clocks appears.
Playing a video game, Mikaela COME ON, COME ON!
COME ON, COME ON, COME ON!
(explosion noise)
UGH!
I JUST CAN'T
BEAT THIS LEVEL.
THIS GAME IS HARD,
BUT VIDEO GAMES ARE SO AWESOME,
EVEN WHEN YOU LOSE.
THE CHARACTERS AND SCENES
ARE SO LIFELIKE,
THEY'RE LIKE LITTLE MOVIES
THAT YOU CONTROL!
IN FACT, DID YOU KNOW
SOME GAMES USE REAL ACTORS
TO PLAY THE CHARACTERS
IN THE GAME?
IT'S CALLED
MOTION CAPTURE.
THE ACTORS' MOTIONS ARE CAPTURED
WITH SPECIAL CAMERAS.
AND IT'S SOMEBODY'S JOB
TO PUT IT ALL TOGETHER.
COME TO THINK OF IT,
THAT WOULD BE AN AMAZING JOB!
WORKING WITH ARTISTS
AND DESIGNER AND ACTORS
TO MAKE THE MOST AMAZING
VIDEO GAME SCENES
THAT WOULD BLOW YOUR MIND!
WELL, THAT SETTLES IS.
I'M GONNA HELP MAKE
MOTION CAPTURE HAPPEN
SO I CAN HELP MAKE VIDEO GAMES
WHEN I GROW UP.
(game beeping)
Next, Mikaela says I FOUND A VIDEO GAME COMPANY
THAT HAS A MASSIVE STUDIO.
I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE
HOW BIG IT IS.
In a modern lobby, Mikaela says IMPRESSIVE!
NICELY DECORATED.
NOT AS BIG AS I THOUGHT A
PERFORMANCE CAPTION ROOM
WOULD BE, BUT.
Michelle is in her mid-twenties, with curly black hair. She wears blue jeans and a gray T-shirt.
Michelle says HI, MIKAELA.
Mikaela says HI, MICHELLE.
Michelle says WELCOME TO
UBISOFT TORONTO.
Mikaela says THANKS!
MICHELLE IS
THE SHOOT MANAGER HERE.
SHE WORKS WITH TONS
OF CREATIVE PEOPLE
TO HELP TURN HER IDEA
INTO A VIDEO GAME.
Michelle says READY TO
HAVE SOME FUN?
Mikaela says OF COURSE.
Michelle says THE STUDIO'S
THIS WAY.
Mikaela says OH.
Michelle says OVER 650 PEOPLE
WORK HERE RIGHT NOW.
Mikaela says WHO, THAT'S A LOT!
AND THEY ALL WORK
ON VIDEO GAMES?
Michelle says YEP, YEP.
SOME OF THEM
I CAN TALK ABOUT
BUT OTHERS
ARE TOP SECRET.
Mikaela says OOOH!
Michelle says MIKAELA, WELCOME TO OUR
PERFORMANCE CAPTURE STUDIO.
Mikaela says WHOA!
SO MANY CAMERAS!
Michelle says YEAH! YEAH, PART OF
MAKING VIDEO GAMES
IS BRINGING ACTORS,
STUNT PEOPLE,
AND SOMETIMES EVEN ANIMALS
INTO THE STUDIO
AND TRACKING
THEIR MOTION.
AS YOU CAN SEE,
WE'RE SURROUNDED
BY 80 T160 CAMERAS.
SO, THAT MEANS THEY CAN
SEE YOUR MOVEMENT
FROM EVERY
SINGLE ANGLE.
Wearing sunglasses and a red feather boa, Mikaela says 80 CAMERAS,
I'M READY FOR MY CLOSE-UP.
(video game noises)
Next, Mikaela says CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT ROOM?
USING JUST YOUR IMAGINATION,
YOU CAN TURN IT INTO ANYTHING.
AND THE ACTORS CAN BECOME
ANYONE, OR ANYTHING.
BUT IN ORDER TO ACT,
YOU NEED TO HAVE A STORY.
SO, IT'S TIME TO FIRE UP
THE OLD IMAGINATION.
(mechanical noises)
Now, they stand next to a whiteboard.
Michelle says AN IMPORTANT FIRST STEP
WHEN YOU'RE TELLING A STORY
IS STORYBOARDING.
Mikaela says WHAT'S A STORYBOARD?
Michelle says A STORYBOARD IS A SERIES
OF PICTURES OR PANELS
WHICH SHOW THE ACTOR WHAT
THEY'RE GOING TO BE DOING
ON THE PCAP STAGE.
Mikaela says IS THAT WHAT WE'RE
GONNA BE DOING?
Michelle says YEAH. WHAT KIND OF STORY
DO YOU WANNA TELL?
Mikaela says I'M GONNA TELL A STORY
ABOUT A ROBOT WHO WANTS
TO BECOME A DANCER.
Michelle says WELL, GOOD NEWS,
THE ONLY LIMIT
IS YOUR IMAGINATION.
SO, GET DRAWING!
Mikaela draws and says ONE DAY THERE WAS A ROBOT.
HE HAD AN IDEA
THAT HE WANTED TO DANCE.
HE PRACTISED
AND PRACTISED.
Michelle says AND WHAT KIND OF DANCER
DOES THE ROBOT WANNA BE?
Mikaela says WELL, HE USUALLY
DOES ALL DANCES,
BUT FOCUSES ON LIKE,
CONTEMPORARY AND BALLET.
Michelle says OOH, NICE.
Mikaela says AND THEN, ONE DAY
HE BECAME A DANCER.
AND, SCENE.
Michelle says BEAUTIFUL.
NOW THAT THE
STORYBOARD'S DONE,
DO YOU WANNA GO CHECK OUT
THE PCAP STAGE?
Mikaela says YEAH!
Michelle says LET'S DO IT.
Back in the studio, Mikaela says HEY! I'M INTERRUPTED YOUR
REGULARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING
BECAUSE EVER SINCE
MICHELLE TAUGHT ME
HOW TO DO A STORYBOARD,
I CAN'T STOP!
WATCH THIS.
("Flight of the bumblebee" playing)
Mikaela draws a storyboard.
Mikaela says SEE? I EVEN
PUT TOGETHER A STORYBOARD
THAT TELLS YOU MICHELLE'S STORY
SO YOU WON'T BE BORED.
CHECK IT OUT!
A slate reads "When they were growing up! By Mikaela."
An animated comic depicts Michelle's life.
Mikaela says WHEN MICHELLE
WAS GROWING UP,
SHE LOVED VIDEO GAMES
AND MOVIES.
SO IN UNIVERSITY,
SHE STUDIED RADIO BROADCASTING,
THEN WORKED
IN TV PRODUCTION.
THAT JOB PREPARED HER
FOR WORK IN VIDEO GAMES!
MICHELLE'S EXPERIENCE
HELPED HER
JUMP RIGHT INTO
A SHOOT MANAGER ROLE.
YOU NEVER KNOW
WHERE YOUR JOB WILL TAKE YOU.
The animated comic ends.
Mikaela says MAYBE A STORY ABOUT AN ALARM
CLOCK THAT LIKES TO SLEEP IN!
OR A TOASTER
THAT'S ALLERGIC TO BREAD.
OR A LIGHT BULB
THAT LOVES THE DARK!
AH, DON'T MIND ME.
I'M IN CREATIVE MODE.
SPEAKING OF WHICH,
BACK TO THE STUDIO.
Now, Mikaela appears wearing a black and green outfit with electronic gloves.
Mikaela says IT'S FINALLY TIME TO TRY MY HAND
AT PERFORMANCE CAPTURE,
SO I'M ALL SUITED UP.
I'M READY!
Michelle says THIS IS EDWIN. HE'S GONNA START
MARKERING YOU UP...
Mikaela and Edwin shake hands.
Mikaela says HI, EDWIN.
Michelle says WHICH MEANS HE'S GONNA PUT
THESE RETRO-REFLECTIVE MARKERS
ALL OVER YOUR SUIT.
SO, YOU'LL SEE THAT
YOU ALREADY HAVE SOME
ON YOUR HANDS AND FEET,
BUT THEY HAVE TO GO
ALL OVER
NEAR YOUR JOINTS
ON YOUR BODY,
SO WHERE YOUR BODY
BENDS AND MOVES
SO THAT THE SYSTEM CAN TRACK
YOUR MOVEMENT ACCURATELY.
Mikaela says SO, WHY DO WE NEED
THE MARKERS?
Michelle says THE CAMERAS ACTUALLY EMIT
INFRARED LIGHT,
AND THE HUMAN EYE
CAN'T SEE THIS,
BUT THESE LITTLE MARKERS
DEFINITELY CAN.
THAT INFRARED LIGHT
CAUSES THESE GUYS TO GLOW
AND THAT LIGHT IS REFLECTED
BACK INTO THE CAMERAS
AND THEN THE COMPUTER CAN SEE
YOUR BODY AS A SKELETON.
Mikaela says I'M PRETTY SURE
I HAVE A SKELETON.
Michelle says I GUESS THE COMPUTER
WILL DECIDE.
Ironically, Mikaela looks scared.
Michelle says LAST BUT NOT LEAST,
WE'RE GONNA PUT
GLASSES ON YOU
SO THAT THE SYSTEM
CAN UNDERSTAND
THAT YOU HAVE A HEAD.
Mikaela says I HAVE A HEAD.
OR AT LEAST NOW I DO.
Michelle chuckles and says SO, YOU CAN MOVE AROUND
A LITTLE BIT,
GET COMFORTABLE
IN THE SUIT.
THIS IS YOUR NEW BODY.
They all move and dance.
Michelle says OKAY, MIKAELA.
FIRST UP, WE'RE GONNA
RUN YOU THROUGH A ROM.
IT STANDS FOR
"RANGE OF MOTION."
IT'S BASICALLY
A BUNCH OF EXERCISES
WHICH ALLOWS THE COMPUTER
TO CREATE A VIRTUAL SKELETON.
Mikaela says RANGE OF MOTION.
GOT IT.
Michelle says DO YOU WANNA START?
Mikaela says YES.
Michelle says TAKE IT AWAY, EDWIN.
With black hair and a goatee, Edwin CAN I GET YOU TO T-POSE,
MIKAELA?
OKAY, NOW HANDS
ON YOUR SIDES.
TAKE 'EM BACK UP.
DOWN, AND UP.
AND THEN EXTEND.
WIGGLE YOUR FINGERS.
NOW MAKE A FIST.
OPEN UP.
UNDERSIDE,
OVER AGAIN, THEN UP.
AND BIG CIRCLES
WITH YOUR ARMS.
The computer shows a 3D version of Mikaela moving.
Edwin says GO THE OTHER WAY.
OKAY, NOW TAKE
FOUR STEPS FORWARD.
Mikaela says ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR.
Edwin says AND FOUR STEPS BACKWARDS.
Mikaela says ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR.
Edwin says SIGNATURE MOVE?
(martial arts sound effect)
A voice says HIYA!
Edwin says AWESOME.
Michelle says SO THIS ROM
IS ALLOWING THE COMPUTER
TO CREATE
A VIRTUAL SKELETON.
ONCE WE HAVE
YOUR SKELETON,
IT'S GOING TO BE DRIVEN BY
THE MARKERS ALL OVER YOUR BODY,
AND THAT'S GOING TO ALLOW US
TO SCALE YOUR SKELETON UP,
SCALE IT DOWN,
SO THAT DIFFERENT KINDS
OF CHARACTERS
CAN BE DRIVEN
BY YOUR BODY.
Mikaela says SO, I CAN BECOME
A 10,000 POUND GORILLA?
OR AN INTERDIMENSIONAL
SNAKE MONSTER?
OR A RADIOACTIVE
FIRE-BREATHING DINOSAUR!
(beeping)
An animated dinosaur roars.
Mikaela says BUT IF I WANNA USE A PROP,
LIKE A BANANA?
OR A PAINTBRUSH?
OR A SNEAKER?
Michelle says WE MARKER OUR PROPS IN THE SAME
WAY THAT WE MARKER OUR ACTORS.
FOR EXAMPLE, THIS FLOWER.
OUR MARKERS ARE RIGHT HERE,
HERE, HERE, AND HERE.
Mikaela says OKAY. COOL!
Michelle says SO, MIKAELA, NOW THAT WE HAVE
YOUR VIRTUAL SKELETON,
IT'S TIME TO MEET
THE NEW YOU.
Mikaela jumps and a virtual alien replicates her moves on a screen.
Mikaela says WHOA!
IS THAT REALLY ME?
Michelle says YEP. WELL,
THAT'S YOU DRIVING JUDGE.
HE'S AN ALIEN
FROM ONE OF OUR GAMES
THAT'S IN PRODUCTION
RIGHT NOW
IN ONE OF OUR
TEST ENVIRONMENTS.
Mikaela says THIS IS SO FUN.
HOW DID YOU TURN MY BODY
INTO THAT?
Michelle says SO, SINCE THE COMPUTER
KNOWS YOUR SKELETON
AND KNOWS
JUDGE'S SKELETON,
THEY CAN BASICALLY
MEET IN THE MIDDLE
AND THEN LET YOUR MARKERS
DRIVE JUDGE.
Mikaela says WHAT'S UP, JUDGE?
I'M JUDGE!
I'M JUDGE!
I'M MIKAELA-JUDGE!
Michelle says SO, NOW IT'S TIME
FOR THE BEST PART OF MY JOB.
LET'S HAVE SOME FUN!
Mikaela says LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
I GIVE YOU
THE DANCING ROBOT!
ONCE UPON A TIME,
THERE WAS A LONELY ROBOT.
HE WISHED AND HE WISHED
HE COULD JUST DANCE.
BUT HE WAS A ROBOT
SO HE COULDN'T.
BUT WITH PRACTICE...
AND HE PRACTISED...
She moves and turns as she speaks.
She continues HE WENT TO
HIS FIRST CONCERT.
EVERYBODY LOVED HIM!
AND HE BECAME
THE FIRST EVER DANCING ROBOT.
Michelle says BRAVO!
Mikaela says SCENE.
THIS REAL-TIME PERFORMANCE
CAPTURE IS THE COOLEST.
IT MAKES MY BODY
LOOK WAY DIFFERENT.
I JUST WONDER HOW THEY CAPTURE
PEOPLE'S FACES
TO TELL IF THEY'RE
HAPPY OR SAD.
Michelle says MIKAELA,
IN ORDER TO CAPTURE
REALLY COMPLEX FACIAL
EXPRESSIONS,
WE USE ONE OF THESE.
IT'S CALLED AN HMC,
OR A HEAD-MOUNTED CAMERA.
WANNA TRY IT ON?
Mikaela says SURE.
Michelle says THERE YOU GO.
YOU CAN SEE HERE,
THERE ARE A FEW CAMERAS
INWARD-FACING
THAT ARE CAPTURING ALL
OF YOUR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS.
USUALLY WE'LL PUT
MARKERS ON YOUR FACE
JUST LIKE THE ONES THAT WERE
ON YOUR BODY BEFORE.
THESE CAMERAS PICK UP
THE WAY THAT THEY MOVE
AND ALLOW OUR ANIMATORS
TO REPLICATE THEM
AND CREATE REALLY
REALISTIC EXPRESSIONS.
Mikaela says SO IT WILL KNOW IF I'M HAPPY...
OR SAD.
OR CONFUSED?
(spring noise)
OR ANGRY!
(train whistle tooting)
WITH THE CLICK
OF A FEW BUTTONS,
YOU CAN TRANSFORM INTO
ANYTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE.
BE IT A ROBOT...
A LION...
OR A DINOSAUR.
(thundering footsteps)
ANYTHING.
MOTION CAPTURE
MAKES VIDEO GAMES
AND MOVIES
TOTALLY AMAZING.
I THINK I FIGURED OUT
WHAT TO DO.
AND IT'S TO TRY MORE JOBS!
THE HUNT CONTINUES.
JOIN ME NEXT TIME
WHEN I CAPTURE THE MOTION
OF DISCOVERING
WHAT I'LL BE...
WHEN I GROW UP!
(music plays)
The end credits roll.
Arianna says THANKS, MIKAELA.
STORYBOARDS ARE POWERFUL TOOLS
TO QUICKLY TELL A STORY.
REMEMBER YOUR
MEMORABLE MOMENT?
REMEMBER HOW YOU WROTE DOWN
THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS
IN FIVE SIMPLE STEPS?
NOW IT'S TIME
TO GET DRAWING AND WRITING
OUR VERY OWN STORYBOARDS.
IT'S PRETTY EASY.
SO, LET'S GET STARTED
BY CREATING FIVE BOXES TOGETHER.
I'M JUST GONNA DRAW THEM HERE.
(marker scratching)
MAKE SURE THAT YOU LEAVE
A LITTLE BIT OF ROOM
UNDERNEATH
EACH OF YOUR BOXES
SO THAT YOU CAN
INCLUDE A CAPTION.
I JUST DREW FIVE BOXES HERE.
CAPTIONS SIMPLY
TELL THE READER
WHAT'S HAPPENING
IN EACH OF YOUR DRAWINGS.
SO, SEE? I'VE LEFT
A LITTLE BIT OF SPACE HERE
AND THAT'S WHERE
I'M GONNA ADD MY WORDS.
ADDING WORDS DEFINITELY
HELP THE READER
TO UNDERSTAND WHAT'S HAPPENING
IN OUR PICTURES.
I'M NOT ALWAYS
THE GREATEST ARTIST,
SO THEY DEFINITELY
COME IN HANDY.
NOW THAT WE HAVE YOUR BOXES,
YOU'RE READY TO BEGIN.
I WANT YOU TO THINK
ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED FIRST
AND START THERE.
DRAW A PICTURE IN THE BOX
AND THEN WRITE A DESCRIPTION
AT THE BOTTOM.
KEEP IN MIND THOSE ADJECTIVES
AND ADVERBS WHEN YOU'RE WRITING-
THE ONES THAT
WE LEARNED ABOUT EARLIER.
REMEMBER TEACHER WINNIE?
THEY ALSO HELP TO MAKE OUR
STORIES EVEN MORE INTERESTING,
SO PLEASE KEEP THAT IN MIND.
WE'RE GONNA KEEP GOING
WITH EACH OF OUR BOXES
UNTIL WE'VE TOLD BASICALLY THE
STORY OF OUR MEMORABLE EVENT.
WHEN YOU'RE FINISHED
DRAWING YOUR IMAGES
AND DOING YOUR WRITING,
I WANT YOU TO FEEL FREE
TO COLOUR THEM IN.
MAKE SURE THAT YOUR STORYBOARD
LOOKS AS INCREDIBLE
AS THE MOMENT ITSELF.
MAYBE WHEN YOU'RE FINISHED
YOU COULD ALSO SHARE IT
WITH ONE OF THE PEOPLE
IN YOUR STORY.
I'M SURE THAT THEY WOULD LOVE
TO RELIVE THAT MOMENT WITH YOU.
HERE'S MY FINISHED
STORYBOARD.
I WANNA SHARE IT
WITH YOU,
JUST SO THAT YOU CAN UNDERSTAND
MY MEMORABLE MOMENT
A LITTLE BIT BETTER.
SO, I'VE GOT IT HERE.
SEE MY PICTURES?
The first box of her sotryboard shows a crossed sleeping emoji.
Arianna says I'M NOT THE GREATEST ARTIST
BUT I GAVE IT A TRY.
THE FIRST ONE HERE-
IT SAYS THAT IT WAS
MY FIRST DAY OF TEACHING.
THE NIGHT BEFORE,
I WAS SO NERVOUS
THAT I BARELY GOT ANY SLEEP.
I REMEMBERED THOSE EMOJIS AND
I TRIED TO MAKE ONE HERE TOO.
IN THE SECOND BOX IT SAYS THAT
I FINALLY GOT A BIT OF SLEEP.
I WOKE UP FEELING LIKE
I HAD SPEEDY BUTTERFLIES
FLYING AROUND IN MY STOMACH!
NEXT, I WALKED
INTO MY NEW SCHOOL
AND MET HELPFUL TEACHERS
WHO GAVE ME A QUICK TOUR
AND HELPED ME
FIND MY CLASSROOM.
MY FOURTH BOX-
I MET SOME
REALLY INCREDIBLE STUDENTS
THAT WERE SO KIND
AND IN THAT MOMENT
I REALIZED THAT THEY WERE JUST
AS NERVOUS ABOUT MEETING ME
AS I WAS ABOUT MEETING THEM.
AND THEN LASTLY,
AT THE END OF THE DAY
WHEN I WAS REALLY, REALLY
EXHAUSTED-- REMEMBER THAT?
I WROTE DOWN HERE THAT AS I
LOOKED AROUND MY NEW CLASSROOM,
I FELT AT HOME
IN MY NEW SCHOOL.
THAT'S MY MEMORABLE MOMENT.
WHAT'S YOURS?
CREATE YOUR STORYBOARD IN ORDER
TO BE ABLE TO TELL YOUR STORY.
THAT'S OUR TIME FOR TODAY.
THANK YOU FOR SPENDING THIS
POWER HOUR OF LEARNING
WITH ME.
TODAY WE HAD A BLAST
ABOUT LEARNING ABOUT
AND THINKING ABOUT
MEMORABLE MOMENTS.
AFTER TAKING SOME TIME
TO PICK OUR VERY OWN,
WE SPENT SOME TIME LEARNING
ABOUT ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS.
WE ALSO LEARNED
ABOUT THE FIVE WS-
THE WHO, WHAT,
WHERE, WHEN, AND WHY
AS WE USED THEM TO HELP US
BRAINSTORM THE STORY
OF OUR MEMORABLE MOMENT.
WE HAD THE CHANCE TO LEARN
ABOUT THE POWER OF PICTURES
FROM E.B. AND KYLA,
AND MIKAELA TAUGHT US
ABOUT STORYBOARDS.
WE ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO
START OUR VERY OWN STORYBOARD
ABOUT OUR MEMORABLE MOMENT.
AND WE DID ALL OF THIS
IN AN HOUR.
CONGRATULATIONS.
IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED
YOUR STORYBOARD YET,
NOT TO WORRY.
TAKE SOME TIME AFTER THE SHOW
TO CONTINUE YOUR WORK,
AND REMEMBER TO SHARE IT
WITH SOMEONE SPECIAL.
THANKS AGAIN FOR SPENDING THIS
POWER HOUR OF LEARNING
WITH ME.
UNTIL NEXT TIME,
PLEASE TAKE CARE.
She smiles, waves and says BYE.
A final slate reads "TVO Kids would like to thank all the teachers involved in the Power Hour of Learning as they continue to teach the children of Ontario from their homes."
The caption changes to "Copyright 2021. The Ontario Educational Communications Authority."
A Female Announcer says WELCOME TO
TVOKIDS POWER HOUR
OF LEARNING.
TODAY'S JUNIOR LESSON.
STORYBOARDING
MEMORABLE MOMENTS.
A caption reads "Junio 4-6. Teacher Arianna." Arianna sits in a living room, with plants and a window in the back. She is in her late thirties, with several short black braids. She wears a blue sweater and big hoop earrings.
Arianna says HI, EVERYONE.
MY NAME IS ARIANNA
AND I AM EXCITED
TO BE WORKING WITH YOU
FOR THIS POWER HOUR OF LEARNING.
TODAY WE ARE GOING TO BE DOING
ONE OF MY FAVOURITE THINGS.
WRITING!
FOR THIS LESSON,
YOU ARE GOING TO NEED
A PIECE OF PAPER AND SOMETHING
TO WRITE WITH.
I ALWAYS LOVE USING
COLOURFUL PENS,
BECAUSE IT MAKES THE EXPERIENCE
MORE A LITTLE BIT MORE FUN.
LET'S GET STARTED.
FOR OUR WRITING TODAY,
I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT AN
IMPORTANT EVENT IN YOUR LIFE.
IT COULD BE ANYTHING AT ALL.
WHAT MADE THAT MOMENT MEMORABLE?
I'VE BEEN A TEACHER FOR 11 YEARS
WHICH KNOW IS LONGER THAN MANY
OF YOU HAVE BEEN ALIVE
AND I REMEMBER MY FIRST DAY
JUST LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY.
I COULD BARELY SLEEP
THE NIGHT BEFORE
AND I FELT LIKE
I HAD BUTTERFLIES
FLUTTERING IN MY STOMACH.
I WAS NERVOUS.
INCREDIBLY, I MET SOME REALLY
AMAZING STUDENTS
WHO WELCOMED ME INTO THE SCHOOL
AND IN NO TIME AT ALL,
IT FELT LIKE HOME.
THAT'S ONE OF
MY MEMORABLE MOMENTS.
HERE'S SOME PICTURES TO GET YOU
THINKING ABOUT OTHER MOMENTS
THAT MIGHT BE MEMORABLE.
LET'S TAKE A LOOK.
RIDING A BIKE FOR THE FIRST TIME
WITHOUT TRAINING WHEELS.
A picture shows a man helping a boy ride a bicycle.
She continues I KNOW SOME TIMES
YOU MIGHT BE THINKING,
"OOH, DO I HAVE THE RIGHT AMOUNT
OF BALANCE HERE?"
IT WAS PROBABLY
AN EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE.
WHAT ABOUT GOING TO THE DEEP-END
OF A POOL FOR THE FIRST TIME?
OF COURSE, WHEN THE LIFEGUARD
ALLOWS YOU
TO GO INTO THE DEEP END.
OR MAYBE BRINGING HOME
A NEW PET.
I KNOW IN THIS PICTURE HERE
IT'S A RABBIT,
BUT IT COULD BE A DOG OR A CAT.
HOW DID THAT MOMENT FEEL?
MAYBE IT'S MEETING YOUR SIBLING
FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME.
OR GOING TO AN AIRPORT AND
FLYING ON AN AIRPLANE
FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME.
THESE ARE ALL REALLY
MEMORABLE EVENTS.
HMM.
I WONDER IF MEMORABLE MOMENTS
HAVE TO BE FIRST TIMES,
LIKE RIDING YOUR BIKE
FOR THE FIRST TIME,
OR YOUR FIRST PET.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
I'M SURE THAT YOU'VE HAD MANY
MEMORABLE MOMENTS IN YOUR LIFE.
TODAY, WE'RE GONNA CONSIDER
ONE MEMORABLE MOMENT
AND WRITE ABOUT IT.
IT MIGHT BE HARD, I KNOW,
TO JUST PICK ONE,
BUT THAT'S WHAT WE'RE GONNA
FOCUS IN ON FOR TODAY.
WHILE YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT ONE
MEMORABLE MOMENT,
THE ONE THAT YOU'RE GOING TO
PICK AND WRITE ABOUT TODAY,
LET'S LOOK AT PARTS
OF SPEECH THAT HELP
TO DESCRIBE THINGS OR ACTIONS.
WE CALL THESE ADJECTIVES
AND ADVERBS.
THEY'RE IMPORTANT IN WRITING,
BECAUSE THEY HELP US
TO MAKE OUR WRITING MORE
INTERESTING TO OUR READERS.
HERE'S TEACHER WYNNE TO HELP US
TO UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS.
LET'S WATCH!
A clip plays.
Winny stands next to a big touch screen showing the drawing of a bear next to a sentence. She is in her mid-twenties, with long straight brown hair. She wears glasses and a blue T-shirt with a print that reads "Home Work Zone."
Winny says WELCOME TO THE
HOMEWORK ZONE, I'M TEACHER WINNY
AND TODAY WE'RE GOING TO LOOK AT
THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN
ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS.
LET'S GO TO THE SMART BOARD.
NOW I HAVE A SENTENCE HERE,
She reads THE
BIG BROWN BEAR ROARS LOUDLY
She continues AND
I WANT TO FIND THE ADJECTIVES
AND ADVERBS IN THE SENTENCE.
FIRST WE WANT TO FIND OUT
WHERE THE ADJECTIVE IS.
NOW WE KNOW ADJECTIVES HELP US
TO DESCRIBE THE NOUN AND A NOUN
CAN BE A PERSON, PLACE OR THING.
SO LET'S SEE IF WE CAN FIND THE
NOUN IN THIS SENTENCE.
THE BIG BROWN BEAR ROARS LOUDLY
AND I'D PROBABLY GUESS THAT THE
NOUN IS THE BEAR BECAUSE IT'S
THE PERSON IN THE SENTENCE.
HOW DO, HOW IS THE BEAR?
WELL I THINK THE BEAR IS BIG AND
BROWN.
SO BIG AND BROWN MUST BE
ADJECTIVES BECAUSE THEY HELP ME
DESCRIBE THE NOUN.
She circles the adjectives and continues WE ALSO WANT TO LOOK FOR
ADVERBS AND ADVERBS HELP US
DESCRIBE THE VERB.
SO A VERB WE KNOW IS AN ACTION
WORD, SO LET'S SEE IF WE CAN
FIND THE ACTION WORD.
THE BIG BROWN BEAR ROARS LOUDLY.
I KNOW ROARS IS THE ACTION WORD
SO IN ORDER TO FIND THE ADVERB
WE WANT TO FIGURE OUT WELL HOW
DOES THE BEAR ROAR?
AND WE KNOW THE BEAR ROARS
LOUDLY, SO THE ADVERB MUST BE
LOUDLY.
SO REMEMBER WHEN WE'RE LOOKING
FOR ADVERBS WE'RE LOOKING TO
ANSWER THE QUESTION OF HOW MUCH,
WHERE, WHEN AND HOW AND THIS
HELPS US TO FIND OUT THAT LOUDLY
IS AN ADVERB.
SO WHEN EVER YOU'RE LOOKING FOR
ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS THINK OF
NOUNS AND VERBS.
I'M TEACHER WINNY AND I HOPE
THAT HELPS YOU UNDERSTAND A BIT
MORE ABOUT ADJECTIVES AND
ADVERBS.
Arianna says THANKS, TEACHER WYNNE!
FROM THAT SHORT VIDEO,
WE LEARNED THAT ADJECTIVES
ARE WORDS USED
TO DESCRIBE NOUNS,
SO PEOPLE, PLACES AND THINGS.
AND WE ALSO LEARNED
ABOUT ADVERBS.
THOSE ARE THE WORDS
TO DESCRIBE OUR ACTIONS.
FOR TODAY'S ACTIVITY,
I WOULD LIKE YOU TO KEEP THAT
IN MIND AS WE WORK.
REMEMBER, ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS
CAN HELP US
TO MAKE OUR WRITING
EVEN MORE INTERESTING.
I'LL SAY THAT A LOT
PROBABLY TODAY.
ARE YOU READY TO GET STARTED
WITH OUR WRITING?
I WANT YOU TO PICK
THAT ONE MEMORABLE MOMENT.
ONCE YOU HAVE IT IN MIND,
WE'RE GOING TO START
THINKING ABOUT THE 5WS.
THE 5WS OF YOUR MEMORABLE
MOMENT.
THAT'S RIGHT, I SAID IT.
THE 5WS.
DO YOU REMEMBER THEM?
ALL GREAT STORIES,
OR IN THIS CASE,
ALL GREAT MEMORABLE EVENTS
HAVE THEM.
HERE'S ZOEY WITH A REMINDER
OF WHAT THEY ARE.
SO, LET'S WATCH.
A caption reads "TVO Kids presents."
Colourful animated letters with googly eyes jump around and form the name "Wacky Word Songs."
A song says IT's THE WACKY WACKY WORD SONGS.
OH YEAH.
Zoey is in her early teens, with long straight brown hair and wears brown trousers, a polka dotted yellow sweater and a denim jacket.
In the attic, Zoey reads OH! THAT'S WHY THE KIDS
WANTED TO FLY.
She closes the book and says WOW. WHAT A GREAT STORY.
DID YOU KNOW THAT
EVERY STORY ANSWERS
FIVE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS?
THEY'RE CALLED THE 5WS.
WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, AND WHY?
YOU CAN'T TELL
A STORY WITHOUT THEM.
I WROTE THIS SONG ABOUT
THE 5WS.
Zoey sings a song that says YOU CAN'T TELL A STORY
WITHOUT THE 5WS
WHO? WHAT? WHEN? WHERE? WHY?
THE 5WS
YOU NEED A WHO IN THE STORY
WHO IS IT ABOUT?
LIKE YOUR FRIEND
OR YOUR TEAM
OR A MONKEY HIDING OUT
THE WHAT IS WHAT HAPPENED
IN THE STORY YOU'RE TELLING
IT'S THE ACTION OF THE STORY
IT'S WHAT IS HAPPENING
THE WHEN IS THE TIME
WHEN THE STORY'S HAPPENING
LIKE TODAY, YESTERDAY,
OR THE FUTURE YOU'RE DREAMING
THE WHERE IS THE PLACE
WHERE THE STORY'S HAPPENING
LIKE AT SCHOOL OR ON THE BUS
OR AT THE SKATING RINK
An animation shows Zoey at a desk with notes and books.
She sings YOU NEED A WHY IN A STORY
WHY IS IT HAPPENING?
YOUR IMAGINATION
CAN MAKE IT ANYTHING
YOU CAN'T TELL A STORY
WITHOUT THE 5WS
WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY,
THE 5WS
OH, NO, YOU CAN'T TELL A STORY
WITHOUT THE 5WS
WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY,
THE 5WS
The song ends.
Zoey says REMEMBER THE 5WS AND YOU'LL TELL
SOME AWESOME STORIES.
OH! I JUST GOT
A GREAT STORY IDEA!
SEE YOU LATER!
A caption reads "Apartment 11 production."
Arianna says THANKS, ZOEY!
OKAY, SO NOW WE KNOW THAT
THE 5WS ARE WHO,
WHAT, WHERE,
WHEN AND WHY.
I WANT YOU TO GRAB
YOUR SHEET OF PAPER
AND LET'S GET BRAINSTORMING
ABOUT YOUR MEMORABLE MOMENT.
BRAINSTORMING
IS A FORM OF PRE-WRITING.
THAT'S RIGHT.
I SAID "PRE-WRITING."
IT'S THE WRITING THAT YOU DO
BEFORE YOU ACTUALLY GET DOWN
TO WRITING YOUR FIRST DRAFT
OF A PUBLISHED PIECE.
ALL GOOD WRITERS DO
SOME FORM OF PRE-WRITING.
TODAY WHAT WE'RE GOING
TO BE DOING
IS WE'RE GOING TO BE
CREATING A WORD WEB.
WHEN YOU'RE FINISHED,
IT'S GOING TO LOOK
SIMILAR TO THIS.
She shows a piece of paper that reads "5 Ws. Memorable moments." It has five circles connected to another one in the middle.
She continues SO, GRAB YOUR SHEET OF PAPER
AND LET'S DRAW A CIRCLE
IN THE MIDDLE.
THIS CIRCLE IN THE MIDDLE
IS WHERE WE ARE GOING TO NAME
OUR MEMORABLE MOMENT.
FROM MY EXAMPLE EARLIER,
I'M GONNA WRITE
MY FIRST DAY OF TEACHING.
WHAT'S YOUR MEMORABLE MOMENT?
I WANT YOU TO NAME IT
AND WRITE IT DOWN
IN THE MIDDLE OF THAT CIRCLE.
KIND OF LIKE WHAT
I JUST DID HERE.
Her circle reads "My first day teaching!"
She continues SO, NOW THAT WE'VE GOT
THAT DONE,
WE'VE GOT TO WORK ON CREATING
THE REST OF OUR WEB,
SO TO DO THAT, WE ARE GOING
TO DRAW FIVE LINES
FROM THE CENTRE OF OUR WEB.
IT'S GONNA LOOK A LITTLE BIT
LIKE THIS.
SO, NOW THAT YOU'VE DONE THEM
FROM THE CENTRE OUTWARD,
I'M SURE THAT YOU'RE GONNA
PROBABLY BE WONDERING
WHAT GOES ON THE ENDS OF THESE
AND WE'RE GOING TO ACTUALLY DRAW
FIVE MORE CIRCLES.
SO, WE'RE GOING TO DRAW
THOSE CIRCLES ON THE END.
AND THIS IS GONNA BE WHERE WE
ARE GOING TO PLACE
ALL OF OUR IMPORTANT INFORMATION
THAT WE WANT
TO BE ABLE TO BRAINSTORM ABOUT.
WE JUST FINISHED TALKING ABOUT
THE FACT THAT THERE ARE 5WS.
WHAT DO YOU THINK
IS GONNA HAVE TO GO...
I KNOW MY CIRCLES AREN'T PRETTY,
BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK
IS GONNA HAVE TO GO
IN EACH OF THESE CIRCLES?
IF YOU GUESSED THE 5WS,
YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.
SO, IN THE FIRST ONE,
WE'RE GONNA START OFF
WITH THE WHO.
WHO WAS A PART OF
YOUR MEMORABLE MOMENT?
I WANT YOU TO WRITE
A LIST OF ALL
OF THE PEOPLE THAT WERE THERE.
I ALSO WANT YOU TO CONSIDER
WRITING SOME ADJECTIVES
TO BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE
THOSE PEOPLE THAT WERE THERE.
FOR MY EXAMPLE,
I WAS NERVOUS ARIANNA.
BOY, WAS I NERVOUS.
BUT I ALSO MET
SOME FRIENDLY STUDENTS.
AND YOU KNOW WHAT?
I MET SOME HELPFUL TEACHERS
ALONG THE WAY.
SO, I'VE WRITTEN THOSE DOWN
IN MY CIRCLE.
I PICKED THIS ONE
RIGHT OVER HERE
TO BE ABLE TO WRITE THE WHO?
NERVOUS ARIANNA,
FRIENDLY STUDENTS,
HELPFUL TEACHERS.
BUT RIGHT NOW, WE'RE JUST MAKING
SOME DOT JOT NOTES,
SO THERE'S NO REAL NEED
TO WRITE FULL SENTENCES,
BUT I DO WANT YOU TO BE ABLE
TO INCLUDE
SOME ADJECTIVES IF YOU CAN.
THAT WOULD BE GREAT.
SO, NEXT, LET'S MOVE ONTO
THE WHAT.
I WANT YOU TO QUICKLY JOT DOWN
A BRIEF DESCRIPTION
OF WHAT HAPPENED.
WE'RE GOING TO SPEND
A FEW MINUTES HERE
TRYING TO THINK ABOUT
THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS.
WHEN I TALK ABOUT
THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS,
I'M TALKING ABOUT THE ORDER.
WHAT HAPPENED FIRST?
AND THEN, WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
TRY TO SEE IF YOU CAN
COME UP WITH
MAYBE FIVE PARTS TO YOUR MOMENT
AND TRY AND SEE IF
YOU CAN WRITE THEM IN ORDER.
YOU CAN MAKE QUICK DOT JOT NOTES
AND TRY AND SEE IF YOU CAN
INCLUDE SOME OF THOSE ADJECTIVES
OR ADVERBS THAT WE TALKED ABOUT.
START OFF WITH DOT JOT NOTES,
BUT LATER ON TODAY, WE'RE GOING
TO SPEND SOME TIME
MAYBE WRITING OUT
SOME SENTENCES,
BUT FOR RIGHT NOW, I JUST WANT
YOU TO START THINKING ABOUT
HOW DID YOUR STORY OR
YOUR MEMORABLE MOMENT START?
WHERE DID IT BEGIN
AND THEN WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
WHILE YOU'RE WRITING,
I'M GOING TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT
ABOUT MY MEMORABLE MOMENT
AND KIND OF THOSE FIVE STEPS
THAT I'M THINKING ABOUT.
SO, NUMBER ONE.
I KNOW THAT THE NIGHT BEFORE
MY FIRST DAY OF TEACHING,
I COULD BARELY SLEEP.
I WAS SO EXCITED AND NERVOUS.
SO, FOR ME,
I JUST JOT THAT DOWN.
FOR NUMBER TWO,
WHEN I FINALLY GOT
A BIT OF SLEEP,
I WOKE UP AND I FELT LIKE I HAD
A BUNCH OF QUICKLY FLYING
BUTTERFLIES IN MY STOMACH.
SEE HOW I USED
SOME ADVERBS THERE?
THAT DAY, I WASN'T EVEN ABLE
TO EAT SOME BREAKFAST.
I WAS SERIOUSLY SO NERVOUS.
NUMBER THREE.
I WALKED INTO MY NEW SCHOOL
AND THERE I MET SOME REALLY
HELPFUL TEACHERS
WHO GAVE ME A QUICK TOUR
OF THE SCHOOL
AND THEY HELPED ME FIND MY WAY
TO MY CLASSROOM.
NUMBER FOUR.
I MET SOME INCREDIBLE STUDENTS.
THEY WERE SO KIND
AND I ACTUALLY REALIZED
IN THAT MOMENT,
THAT THEY WERE JUST AS NERVOUS
ABOUT MEETING ME
AS I WAS ABOUT MEETING THEM.
WE WERE ALL FEELING
THOSE SENSE OF...
THAT SENSE OF BUTTERFLIES
IN OUR STOMACH.
NUMBER FIVE.
AT THE END OF THE DAY,
I MUST ADMIT, I WAS EXHAUSTED.
AND SOMETIMES EMOTIONS CAN MAKE
YOU FEEL THAT WAY.
BUT AS I LOOKED AROUND
MY CLASSROOM,
I FELT AT HOME IN MY NEW SCHOOL.
SO, THAT WAS
MY MEMORABLE MOMENT IN ORDER
KIND OF FROM START TO FINISH.
THAT WAS MY DAY.
WHAT'S THE ORDER OF EVENTS
FOR YOUR MEMORABLE MOMENT?
WHAT HAPPENED FIRST?
HOW DID YOUR
MEMORABLE MOMENT END?
WHAT ARE THE STEPS,
THE KIND OF IN-BETWEEN?
REMEMBER TO JOT THEM DOWN.
I'M GOING TO KEEP GOING,
BUT FEEL FREE TO COME BACK
TO THIS PART AT ANY TIME
IF YOU NEED TO ADD SOME MORE.
NEXT, WE ARE ON TO WHERE.
WHERE DID YOUR MOMENT
TAKE PLACE?
WAS IT AT HOME?
WAS IT AT A FRIEND'S
OR YOUR GRANDPARENTS'
OR MAYBE AT A PARK?
FOR ME, MINE TOOK PLACE
AT A SMALL SCHOOL.
SEE HOW I ADDED
AN ADJECTIVE THERE?
REMEMBER TO USE THEM
AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN
BECAUSE AS I'VE SAID MANY TIME
BEFORE,
THEY REALLY DO MAKE
YOUR WRITING INTERESTING.
WHERE DID YOUR
MEMORABLE MOMENT TAKE PLACE?
JOT IT DOWN ON YOUR
SHEET OF PAPER, PLEASE.
SO, SO FAR WE'VE
FIGURED OUT THE WHO,
THE WHAT, AND THE WHERE.
WE'RE ALMOST THERE!
WE'VE ONLY GOT TWO MORE
TO GO MORE TO GO.
SO, LET'S MOVE INTO THE WHEN.
WE ALREADY KNOW THAT ALL
OF OUR MEMORABLE MOMENTS,
THAT THEY'VE TAKEN PLACE
IN THE PAST.
BUT PERHAPS YOU WANT TO CONSIDER
A PARTICULAR SEASON.
MAYBE YOU KNOW THE DAY
OR MAYBE THE MONTH OR THE YEAR.
FOR ME, IT WAS OCTOBER OF 2019,
SORRY! 2009!
AND IT WAS A WARM FALL DAY.
WHEN DID YOUR MOMENT TAKE PLACE?
JOT IT DOWN ON
YOUR SHEET OF PAPER.
AGAIN, THINK ABOUT IF YOU WANT
TO DESCRIBE IT
IN ANY PARTICULAR WAY.
LASTLY, WE'RE GOING TO BE
THINKING ABOUT THE WHY.
WHY DID THIS MOMENT
TAKE PLACE?
WAS IT A SPECIAL CELEBRATION?
WAS IT A HOLIDAY?
WAS IT A DECISION THAT YOU MADE,
OR THAT PERHAPS
YOUR PARENTS MADE?
WHY DID YOUR MOMENT TAKE PLACE?
FOR ME, IT WAS BECAUSE I WAS
LOOKING FOR A JOB
AND THERE WAS A SCHOOL WAS
ACTUALLY LOOKING FOR A TEACHER.
WE JUST HAPPENED TO CONNECT.
I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT
YOUR MOMENT.
WHY DID IT HAPPEN?
JOT THAT DOWN ON YOUR PIECE
OF PAPER IN YOUR LAST CIRCLE.
WELL, HOPEFULLY,
YOU'VE GOT YOUR CIRCLES
COMPLETE SIMILAR TO MINE.
WE'VE JUST ACTUALLY COMPLETED
THE FIRST PART
OF OUR WRITING FOR TODAY.
GREAT WORK! I'M SO IMPRESSED!
WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT
LIVED EXPERIENCES
AND WHAT THAT MEANS IS THAT
WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT
MEMORABLE MOMENTS.
FOR SOME, SOLVING A MYSTERY,
OR BEING EXPOSED TO NEW IDEAS,
OR EVEN LEARNING ABOUT HISTORY
CAN ALSO BE A MEMORABLE MOMENT.
IN THIS EPISODE OF
THE
MYSTERY FILES,
E.B. AND KYLA EXPERIENCE
A MEMORABLE MOMENT.
LET'S CHECK IT OUT.
A clip plays.
(music plays)
In the basement, E.B. says WHAT A GREAT DAY TO SOLVE A
MYSTERY.
E.B. is in his mid-teens with curly brown hair in an afro and he wears jeans, a yellow T-shirt and an unbuttoned plaid shirt.
He says LET'S SEE, UH... YEAH.
THIS ONE'S CALLING OUT TO ME.
"SHOW AND TELL." NICE.
He opens the file and says WHAT DO YOU THINK, KYLA?
(humming)
ALL RIGHT, KYLA?
YOOHOO, KYLA?
Kyla is checking her phone.
Kyla is in her mid-teens, with long slightly wavy brown hair. She wears jeans and a printed jacket.
Kyla says SORRY, SORRY. WE JUST
GOT A MESSAGE ON OUR WEBSITE
FROM A GIRL NAMED EMMA.
E.B. says WHAT DID SHE SAY?
Kyla says 7H15, GR AND
THE NUMBER 8. THX, MA.
E.B. says I DON'T HAVE A CLUE
ABOUT IT, BUT WE DO HAVE
THREE CLUES FOR OUR MYSTERY,
"SHOW AND TELL."
Kyla says OOH. I LOVE SHOW-AND-TELL.
THIS LOOKS COOL. OKAY, CLASS.
FOR OUR SHOW-AND-TELL TODAY,
I'VE BROUGHT THIS... CROWN.
She grabs a sign with a strange symbol.
E.B. says NO. THAT IS OBVIOUSLY...
A CHANDELIER.
Kyla says AND AS QUEEN OF THIS
CASTLE, I'LL RESEARCH THIS CROWN
AND PROVE YOU WRONG.
E.B. says OKAY. NOW CHECK THIS
OUT. WOAH. WHAT IN... THIS LOOKS
LIKE A MAP. BON ECHO CREEK.
YEAH! I'LL BET THIS IS
FROM BON ECHO PARK. IT'S
A PROVINCIAL PARK NEAR HERE.
Kyla says AND LOOK AT THAT
STRANGE STICK FIGURE. WEIRD.
She grabs a card with a "jazz hands" emoji and says JAZZ HANDS? WHAT DO JAZZ HANDS
HAVE TO DO WITH THE MYSTERY
OF "SHOW AND TELL"?
E.B. says I DON'T KNOW. UNLESS
HERMIONE WAS TRYING TO SHOW US
HOW TO SOLVE MYSTERIES
BROADWAY-STYLE.
HA-HA! TIME TO INVESTIGATE.
Music plays as the opening of the show rolls.
A song goes HISTORY IS FULL OF MYSTERIES
GREAT AUNT HERMIONE
COULD BE HEARD TO SAY
Aunt Hermione stands next to a knight's armour. She's in her fifties, with short white hair and wears glasses, beige trousers, a belted white short-sleeved shirt, an explorer's hat. She carries a cross-body bag.
The song goes YOU HAVE TO KNOW
WHAT CAME BEFORE
TO NAVIGATE THE WORLD TODAY
Clips show images of power lines, an abacus and a computer.
The song continues SHE WAS GOING TO WRITE A BOOK
CALLED "MYSTERY FILES."
TO TELL WHAT SHE UNCOVERED
BUT TIME RAN OUT
NEW ADVENTURES CAME FIRST
SO SHE LEFT HER SECRETS
UNDISCOVERED
She writes down notes on a notebook, holds a globe, travels by jeep, flies an airplane.
The song continues ALL SHE LEFT BEHIND
WAS A HOUSE FULL OF CLUES
BUT E.B. AND KYLA HAVE A PLAN
In the basement, a drawer in a chest opens and random objects come out.
The song continues THEY'RE GONNA SOLVE
EACH MYSTERY FILE
AND FINISH
WHAT HERMIONE BEGAN
THEY'LL SOLVE
E.B. and Kyla appear looking through Hermione's notes.
The song continues THE MYSTERY FILES
UNRAVEL ALL THE MYSTERIES
THEY'LL SOLVE
THE MYSTERY FILES
UPLOAD HIDDEN HISTORIES
THEY'LL SOLVE
THE MYSTERY FILES
E.B. and Kyla high-five.
The title of the show reads "The Mystery Files."
E.B. says I'M FOLLOWING AUNT HERMIONE'S
MAP THROUGH BON ECHO PARK
TO THIS STRANGE STICK FIGURE
TO SEE WHAT IT'LL UNCOVER ABOUT
THE MYSTERY OF "SHOW AND TELL."
Lisa is in her forties, with short straight light brown hair. She wears a ranger's uniform.
Lisa says HI. IT'S NICE
TO FINALLY MEET YOU.
E.B. says NICE TO MEET YOU TOO. LISA?
Lisa says YES IT IS.
E.B. says I'M TRYING TO SOLVE A MYSTERY
THAT BEGINS WITH THIS MAP, AND
I WAS WONDERING IF YOU KNOW WHAT
THIS STICK FIGURE IS MARKING.
Lisa says I CAN SHOW YOU. FOLLOW ME.
They walk to a peer and get on a pontoon boat.
E.B. says OKAY. ALL RIGHT. COOL.
WOW. THAT'S AWESOME.
THAT CLIFF IS HUGE!
Lisa says IT IS. WE HAVE REALLY
GOOD ECHOES, OR ACOUSTIC
PROPERTIES, ON THE CLIFF. WOULD
YOU LIKE TO GIVE IT A TRY?
E.B. shouts ICE CREAM!
(echoes)
Lisa laughs.
E.B. says I JUST HEARD MYSELF SAY,
"ICE CREAM," THREE TIMES.
OH MY GOODNESS.
Lisa says AND PROBABLY A LOT OF
OTHER PEOPLE HEARD YOU AS WELL.
E.B. says YEAH. I MEAN, I'M SURE
THEY DON'T MIND, BECAUSE
EVERYONE LOVES ICE CREAM.
Lisa says THAT'S TRUE.
E.B. says YEAH.
WOW. THIS IS SO IMPRESSIVE!
Lisa says IT IS REALLY IMPRESSIVE.
AND IT'S ALSO A SACRED PLACE
FOR FIRST NATIONS PEOPLE.
E.B. says OH, REALLY?
Lisa says UH-HUH.
E.B. says WOW.
Lisa says SO IT'S THOUGHT TO BE
A REALLY POWERFUL PLACE.
E.B. says I BET. IT FEELS POWERFUL
JUST BEING HERE.
Lisa says UH-HUH. AND A PLACE THEN
WITH A LOT OF SPIRITS.
E.B. says HEY! IS THAT ARTWORK?
Lisa says YES, THAT'S RIGHT.
E.B. says WOW. OKAY, I GET IT. SO,
BECAUSE IT'S A SACRED PLACE,
THAT'S MAYBE WHY SOME PEOPLE
WOULD'VE DRAWN SOME STUFF
ON THE ROCK?
Lisa says THAT'S TRUE. AND THIS IS
ALSO PART OF A CANOE ROUTE,
SO A LOT OF PEOPLE WOULD'VE
BEEN TRAVELING BY THIS CLIFF.
AND ACTUALLY IF YOU LOOK AT
THAT PICTOGRAPH UNDER THE
TWO ANIMALS, IT'S SAID TO BE
A CANOE WITH PEOPLE OR SPIRITS.
E.B. says IT LOOKS PRETTY OLD.
Lisa says OH... THEY SAY SOME OF
THEM COULD BE ABOUT 300 YEARS
OLD. SOME MIGHT GO ALL THE WAY
TO ABOUT A THOUSAND YEARS OLD.
E.B. says OH MY GOODNESS!
Lisa says SO, E.B., DO YOU SEE THAT
PICTOGRAPH RIGHT OVER THERE?
E.B. says WAIT A MINUTE... YUP.
THAT'S IT. THAT'S THE PICTURE
FROM GREAT AUNT HERMIONE'S MAP.
WHO IS THAT?
Lisa says IT'S THOUGHT TO BE A
SPIRIT CALLED NANABUSH. NANABUSH
IS A SPIRIT WHO TAUGHT PEOPLE
THE RIGHT THINGS TO DO.
HOW TO HUNT, FISH. ALWAYS TAUGHT
LESSONS. AND SOME PEOPLE SAY
THAT IT CAN TURN ITSELF
INTO ANYTHING IT WANTS TO BE,
INCLUDING A RABBIT.
E.B. says I HAVE TO SHOW KYLA.
Kyla says HI, E.B.
Kyla is painting a sign.
E.B. says KYLA. KYLA. LOOK.
LOOK, LOOK, LOOK. LOOK AT WHAT
THE STICK FIGURE WAS MARKING
ON AUNT HERMIONE'S MAP.
Kyla says UH-HUH.
E.B. says UH-UH! SORRY TO INTERRUPT YOU
WITH MY AMAZING DISCOVERY.
Kyla says OH, WOW!
WHAT ARE THOSE DRAWINGS?
E.B. says THEY'RE FIRST
NATIONS PICTOGRAPHS.
Kyla says NO WAY!
E.B. says ARE YOU RESEARCHING
THAT CHANDELIER CLUE?
Kyla says YOU MEAN THE CROWN CLUE?
AND NO I WASN'T, BUT THANKS
FOR REMINDING ME. I'LL GET BACK
TO THAT WHEN I'M DONE WITH THIS.
E.B. says YOU ARE OBSESSED WITH
THAT MESSAGE! WE'VE GOT ANOTHER
MYSTERY TO SOLVE. REMEMBER?
"SHOW AND TELL"?
Kyla says I HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN.
CHECK THIS OUT.
She plays an animated video and says I FOUND OUT THAT PEOPLE HAVE
BEEN USING SIGNS AND MARKINGS
SINCE THE BEGINNING
OF HUMAN HISTORY.
SOME OF THE EARLIEST WERE CAVE
PAINTINGS. MAYBE THEY WERE
A KIND OF SHOW-AND-TELL.
THE OLDEST CAVE PAINTING EVER
COMES FROM INDONESIA.
IT'S AT LEAST 35,400 YEARS OLD.
IT WAS SO OLD THEY HADN'T EVEN
INVENTED REGULAR PAINT AND
BRUSHES YET. ALL OVER THE WORLD,
EARLY HUMANS FINGER-PAINTED
WITH OCHRE, A NATURAL PIGMENT
FROM THE EARTH. THE COLOUR OF IT
RANGES FROM DEEP ORANGE TO RED
TO BROWNISH-YELLOW.
She paints her cheek while painting the sig.
She says OOPS. LUCKY ALL I'M USING
IS WATER-COLOUR.
E.B. says YOU KNOW WHAT? I THINK THAT
LOOK ACTUALLY WORKS FOR YOU.
HEY, DO YOU THINK AUNT HERMIONE
WAS TRYING TO SAY THAT CAVE ART
WAS THE FIRST SHOW-AND-TELL?
Kyla says I'M NOT SO SURE. HOW DOES
THAT EXPLAIN THE OTHER CLUES?
E.B. says IT DOESN'T. BUT MAYBE...
THESE PAINTINGS WERE DRAWN
IN OCHRE, WHICH LASTS A REALLY
LONG TIME, AND WAS PUT ON A BUSY
WATERWAY TO SHOW PEOPLE THE WAY.
LIKE A... LIKE A STREET SIGN.
THAT SECOND CLUE COULD BE
A STREET SIGN, SHOWING
PEOPLE THE WAY, TOO.
Kyla says WHAT'S IT SUPPOSED
TO TELL ME? ROYALTY AHEAD?
E.B. says NO, SILLY. IT'S OBVIOUSLY
A SIGN FOR A LIGHT SHOP.
Kyla says THEN HOW DOES
THE EMOJI FIT IN?
E.B. says NOT SURE. BUT I THINK THAT
COULD BE SOME KIND OF A SIGN.
Kyla says I'LL CHECK IT OUT.
E.B. says AND I'LL CHECK
MY THEORY WITH LISA.
Kyla says SEE YA.
E.B. says LISA, CAN YOU TELL ME MORE
ABOUT THESE PICTOGRAPHS? I HAVE
A THEORY THAT THEY WERE MEANT
TO SHOW BOAT TRAVELERS THE WAY.
Lisa says YOU MIGHT THINK THAT,
BUT IN FACT THEY TELL STORIES.
E.B. says OH, OKAY.
Lisa says IT'S THOUGHT THAT THESE ARE
RECORDS OF VISIONS OR DREAMS...
E.B. says OH!
Lisa says THAT SOME NATIVE
PEOPLE HAD WHILE THEY WERE HERE.
NO ONE REALLY KNOWS FOR SURE
WHAT EACH PICTOGRAPH MEANT TO
THE ORIGINAL PAINTER. A LOT OF
THINGS WERE NEVER WRITTEN DOWN.
THEY WERE JUST PASSED ON ORALLY.
AND A LOT OF THAT INFORMATION'S
BEEN LOST.
Lisa says SO, E.B., WE SAW SOME
OF THE PICTOGRAPHS...
E.B. says RIGHT.
Lisa says AND LEARNED A LITTLE BIT
ABOUT WHAT THE PAINT IS MADE OF.
E.B. says UH-HUH.
Lisa shows him a rock and says SO THIS IS CALLED
HEMATITE. INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
WOULD CRUSH IT INTO A POWDER.
E.B. says OKAY.
Lisa says AND THEN THEY MAY HAVE
MIXED IT WITH WATER OR BEAR
GREASE EVEN, OR EVEN FISH OIL...
E.B. says BEAR GREASE?
WHAT'S BEAR GREASE?
Lisa says IT'S JUST GREASE FROM
A BEAR AFTER IT'S BEEN KILLED.
E.B. says OH, OKAY.
Lisa says AND THEY MIX THAT...
E.B. says OKAY.
Lisa says OR THE FISH OIL OR
WATER WITH THE CRUSHED HEMATITE
POWDER. AND THAT'S OCHRE.
E.B. says WOW!
E.B. starts painting with the mix.
E.B.'s phone rings.
E.B. says HEY, KYLA. I GOT A LITTLE...
SHOW-AND-TELL
FOR YOU, HUH?
Kyla says THAT'S AWESOME! AND
GUESS WHAT? YOU WERE RIGHT ABOUT
CLUE TWO. IT IS A STREET SIGN. I
FOUND THE WORD "MAXIMUM" ON THE
BACK AND FIGURED OUT IT'S FOR
A COMPANY CALLED MAXIMUM SIGNS.
E.B. says COOL. BUT I'M STARTING
TO THINK OUR "SHOW AND TELL."
MYSTERY ISN'T JUST ABOUT
STREET SIGNS SHOWING PEOPLE
THE WAY ANYMORE.
I THINK IT HAS SOMETHING
TO DO WITH CULTURAL STORIES.
Kyla says WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT?
E.B. says WELL, THE PICTOGRAPHS
TOLD IMPORTANT TALES ABOUT THE
CULTURES OF THE ALGONQUIN AND
OJIBWE PEOPLE THAT PAINTED THEM.
Kyla says SO WHAT DID YOU
UNDERSTAND ABOUT THEIR CULTURE?
E.B. says THAT I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND
IT. THE STORIES WERE COMPLETELY
DIFFERENT FROM WHAT I THOUGHT
THEY WERE SAYING.
Kyla says WELL, I'M OFF TO MAXIMUM
SIGNS, SO I'LL SEE IF I CAN PUT
YOUR THEORY TO THE TEST THERE.
E.B. says GOOD LUCK. AND I'LL
GET STARTED ON EMOJI RESEARCH.
WHO KNOWS HOW THAT FITS IN.
Kyla records a video and says I'M AT MAXIMUM SIGNS
TO PROVE THAT THIS IS A CROWN,
AND THAT MAKES ME QUEEN MYSTERY
SOLVER. OH, AND ALSO TO FIND OUT
MORE ABOUT THE MYSTERY
OF "SHOW AND TELL."
HELLO?
She enters an office and meets Tyler.
Tyler is in his forties, balding and with a goatee. He wears glasses, jeans and a blue polo shirt.
Tyler says OH. HI, KYLA. I'M TYLER.
Kyla says NICE TO MEET YOU. I WAS
WONDERING IF YOU COULD TELL ME
WHAT THIS IS. PERSONALLY,
I THINK IT'S A CROWN, BUT
E.B. THINKS IT'S A CHANDELIER.
Tyler says HMM... COME WITH ME.
LET ME SHOW YOU.
Tyler takes her to the manufacturing room.
Kyla says WOAH. THIS LOOKS AWESOME.
Tyler shoes her other signs and says SO, KYLA, DO THESE
GIVE YOU ANY IDEAS?
Kyla says WELL, THESE LOOK LIKE
BOATS. THIS LOOKS LIKE WATER.
SO... OH! IT'S NOT A CROWN.
IT'S AN ANCHOR.
Tyler says YES.
Kyla says SO THIS SIGN TELLS
PEOPLE WHERE BOATS CAN ANCHOR.
ARE SIGNS LIKE THIS
THE SAME EVERYWHERE?
Tyler says SIGNS ARE USUALLY
DESIGNED TO BE UNIVERSALLY
UNDERSTOOD. HOWEVER, SOME SIGNS
ARE DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY
FOR A COUNTRY AND-OR CULTURE.
Kyla says HUH. PICTOGRAPHS. JUST
LIKE THE ONES IN BON ECHO PARK.
Tyler says YEAH. PICTOGRAPHS
LIKE THESE QUICKLY COMMUNICATE
IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO DRIVERS
AS THE CARS GO FLYING BY.
FOR EXAMPLE...
Kyla says DEER CROSSING.
Tyler says CORRECT.
Kyla says BUS STOP?
Tyler says YES.
Kyla says SORRY. HEY, E.B.
E.B. says HEY, KYLA. I WAS WRONG
ABOUT THE EMOJI. SOME PEOPLE
ONLINE ARE SAYING THAT IT'S
THE "HUG FACE." WEIRD.
Kyla says I KNOW. AND I WAS ALSO
WRONG ABOUT THE CROWN SIGN.
E.B. says HAH! I KNEW
IT WAS A CHANDELIER.
Kyla says ACTUALLY, IT'S AN
ANCHOR. AND IT'S PUT IN AREAS
WERE BOATS CAN PARK.
E.B. says HUH. THIS MYSTERY'S FULL
OF MISTAKEN IDENTITIES. I MEAN,
I THOUGHT THE PICTOGRAPHS SAID
ONE THING, BUT THEY ACTUALLY
MEANT ANOTHER. THE CROWN-SLASH-
CHANDELIER TURNED OUT TO BE AN
ANCHOR, AND NOW THE JAZZ HANDS
EMOJI MAY BE A HUG?
Kyla says YEAH. AND IT'S STRANGE
BECAUSE EACH CLUE IS A SIGN
OR SYMBOL THAT SHOULD BE REALLY
CLEAR, BUT OUR FIRST GUESSES
WERE TOTALLY OFF TRACK.
E.B. says YOU'D THINK, RIGHT?
WELL, CHECK THIS OUT. I'VE
FOUND SOMETHING SUPER-FUNNY
THAT I THINK MIGHT HELP.
E.B. plays an animated video where he's in a car.
He says EVER SEEN A SIGN LIKE THIS?
A sign with a kangaroo on appears.
Kyla says NO.
E.B. says THEY'RE REALLY COMMON
IN AUSTRALIA TO WARN DRIVERS
A KANGAROO MIGHT HOP
IN THEIR PATH.
Kyla says HUH.
E.B. says AND WHAT ABOUT THIS?
Another sign appears with a show with a broken heel.
E.B. says IT'S TO WARN WOMEN IN DENMARK
THE COBBLED STREETS MIGHT
BREAK THEIR SHOES.
Kyla says WOW. THAT WAS TOTALLY
MY NEXT GUESS. YEAH.
E.B. says DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS IS?
A sign of a hand coming out of a hole appears.
Kyla says A SIGN OF A ZOMBIE INVASION?
E.B. says WRONG. IT'S A SIGN
FROM FINLAND, WARNING AGAINST
THIN ICE. I KNOW THEY LOOK
WEIRD TO US, RIGHT? BUT
THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THOSE
COUNTRIES TOTALLY GET THEM.
Kyla says SO IF WHERE YOU LIVE
IS SO IMPORTANT, THEN HOW COME
YOU DIDN'T GET THE PICTOGRAPHS
AT BON ECHO PARK IF YOU LIVE
ONLY A FEW HOURS AWAY
IN THE SAME COUNTRY?
E.B. says MAYBE BECAUSE I'M NOT PART OF
AN ANCIENT FIRST NATIONS TRIBE.
I THINK IT'S NOT JUST
ABOUT WHERE YOU LIVE,
BUT WHEN YOU LIVE.
Kyla says SO ROAD SIGNS WORK
BECAUSE WE UNDERSTAND THE AREA
AND THE MEANING OF THE PICTURE.
THANKS, E.B.
E.B. says COOL. SEE YOU LATER.
Kyla says I WAS WONDERING...
MAYBE, DO YOU THINK I CAN
HELP YOU MAKE A SIGN?
Tyler says YEAH, SURE. COME OVER
WITH ME TO THE LASER CUTTER.
Kyla says YEAH.
I RECOGNIZE THAT SHAPE.
IT'S FOR A STOP SIGN, RIGHT?
Tyler says YES, EXACTLY. CUT THEM.
She watches the sign being cut by the laser and says OH, WOW! I SEE THE LASER.
IT'S CUTTING OCTAGON SHAPES.
SO WHY ARE STOP SIGNS
OCTAGON SHAPED?
Tyler says OCTAGON HAS EIGHT
SIDES, AND IT INDICATES DANGER.
IT'S THE ONLY SIGN
THAT HAS EIGHT SIDES.
Kyla says WHEN IT COMES TO ROAD SIGNS,
SHAPES AND COLOURS ARE SUPER-
IMPORTANT. RECTANGLES ARE FOR
DIRECTIONS, AND THEY'RE USUALLY
GREEN. YELLOW DIAMONDS WARN YOU
TO BE CAREFUL AHEAD. AN ORANGE
SIGN MEANS THERE'S CONSTRUCTION.
AND A RED SIGN MEANS STOP OR
DANGER. SO EVEN WHEN A SIGN
IS TOO FAR WAY TO READ,
A DRIVER CAN STILL TELL
WHAT'S COMING UP BY THE SHAPE
AND COLOUR OF THE SIGN. THAT
GIVES ME AN IDEA FOR A SIGN.
TA-DA!
She shows him a sign with a boy, a girl and a magnifying glass.
Tyler says OH, GOOD JOB.
IS IT A DETECTIVE SIGN?
Kyla says YES, IT'S ME AND E.B.
SOLVING A MYSTERY.
Tyler says WHAT DOES "7H 15" MEAN?
Kyla says THAT'S ANOTHER MYSTERY
I'M TRYING TO SOLVE. SEE?
Tyler says I DON'T KNOW, BUT
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR MYSTERY.
Kyla says THANKS.
E.B. says I'M ON MY WAY TO MEET
DEBBIE - SHE'S A GRAPHIC ARTIST
AND AN EMOJI EXPERT - TO FIND
OUT MORE ABOUT OUR JAZZY, HUG
EMOJI. WHO KNOWS WHY HERMIONE
PUT IT IN HER MYSTERY FILE
LABELED "SHOW AND TELL"?
Debbie says HI, E.B.
Debbie is in her forties, with long slightly wavy blond hair. She wears glasses, gray trousers and a tie die top.
E.B. says HI, DEBBIE. NICE TO MEET YOU.
Debbie says NICE TO MEET YOU TOO.
COME ON IN.
Debbie shows him to her studio.
E.B. says OH... LOOK AT ALL
THIS STUFF. SWEET. EMOJIS.
SINCE YOU'RE A GRAPHIC ARTIST,
I'M GONNA SEND YOU ONE. THINK
YOU CAN TELL ME WHAT IT MEANS?
Debbie says OH, ABSOLUTELY. OF COURSE.
E.B. says AND... SENT.
Debbie gets the image and says RECEIVED. BACK TO YOU.
E.B. says OH. HUG. OKAY.
THAT MAKES... THAT MAKES SENSE.
Debbie says WHAT DID YOU THINK IT MEANT?
E.B. says WELL, I THOUGHT IT WAS
LIKE... LIKE JAZZ HANDS.
LIKE, I'M TRYING TO SOLVE
A MYSTERY THAT I THINK IS
ABOUT CULTURE AND SIGNS...
Debbie says WELL YOU PICKED
A GOOD EXAMPLE FOR THAT. THAT
PARTICULAR EMOJI MEANS "HUG" IN
JAPANESE, WHICH IS WHERE IT WAS
CREATED. BUT IN THE WEST IT
ACTUALLY MEANS "JAZZ HANDS."
TO A LOT OF PEOPLE, EVEN THOUGH
THAT WASN'T THE ORIGINAL INTENT.
E.B. says I FOUND OUT THAT "EMOJI."
IS A MASH-UP OF THE JAPANESE
WORDS "E," WHICH MEANS
"PICTURE," AND "MOJI," WHICH
MEANS CHARACTER. SO AN "EMOJI."
IS KIND OF LIKE A PICTOGRAPH,
JUST LIKE OUR CAVE ART AND BOAT
SIGN CLUE. THERE ARE THOUSANDS
OF EMOJIS THAT PEOPLE CAN USE
ON THEIR PHONES, TABLETS, AND
COMPUTERS. AND EVERY COUNTRY
HAS ITS FAVOURITE EMOJI.
Debbie shows E.B. a board with 8 emojis.
She says MAYBE WE CAN PLAY A GAME
WHERE YOU GUESS WHICH COUNTRY
USES THESE MOST COMMONLY.
E.B. says I DO LOVE GAMES.
WELL, LET'S TRY THIS ONE.
E.B. says OKAY, SO, THE PIZZA...
MAYBE ITALY?
Debbie says WELL...
E.B. says I HEAR THE PIZZA'S
PRETTY NICE THERE.
Debbie says YEAH, IT'S LOGICAL,
BUT IT'S WRONG.
E.B. says AMERICA?
Debbie says YOU GOT IT.
Debbie and E.B. laugh.
Debbie says OKAY, AND LET'S...
LET'S TRY THE HEART.
E.B. says OKAY, UM...
I'M THINKING, MAYBE, SPAIN OR...
NO, NO, NO. MAYBE FRANCE,
BECAUSE FRENCH IS
THE LANGUAGE OF LOVE.
Debbie says YOU HIT THAT ONE
RIGHT ON THE MARK.
E.B. says WOO! OKAY.
Debbie says OKAY. AND MAYBE
FOR A THIRD ONE? WHAT ABOUT
THIS LITTLE NUMBER HERE?
E.B. says HOW ABOUT AUSTRALIA,
BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT OF
ANIMALS, WHICH MEANS THAT
THERE'S A LOT OF POOP.
Debbie says WELL, NICE TRY, BUT NO.
E.B. says UM...
Debbie says IT'S CANADA.
E.B. says CANADA? NO WAY. HOLD ON.
I GOTTA TELL THIS TO KYLA.
He calls Kyla.
Kyla says HI, E.B.
E.B. says KYLA, GUESS WHAT COUNTRY
USES THIS EMOJI THE MOST?
Kyla says EWW! POOP! DISGUSTING.
E.B. says WE DO.
E.B. laughs.
E.B. says WE... WE USE THE
POOP EMOJI THE MOST!
(still laughing)
Kyla says BUT YOU KNOW WHAT'S
NOT DISGUSTING? THE MESSAGE
FROM EMMA. I THINK I'M CLOSER
TO FIGURING IT OUT.
E.B. says DON'T YOU REMEMBER WE
HAVE ANOTHER MYSTERY TO SOLVE?
Kyla says I HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN.
I'VE ALSO BEEN DOING
SOME DIGGING ON EMOJIS.
BEFORE EMOJIS, THERE WERE
EMOTICONS. AN EMOTICON IS WHERE
YOU USE LETTERS AND SYMBOLS ON A
KEYBOARD TO MAKE A FACE SO YOU
CAN TELL SOMEONE HOW YOU FEEL.
Kyla appears making different faces with the correspondent emoticons next.
She says LIKE THIS WINKING ONE IF YOU'RE
JUST JOKING AROUND. BACK IN
1982, A COMPUTER SCIENTIST HAD A
GREAT IDEA: FACES COULD HELP US
FIGURE OUT WHAT A JOKE WAS AND
WHAT WAS SERIOUS ONLINE. WE CALL
THEM "EMOTICONS." A MIX OF
THE WORD "EMOTION" AND "ICON."
E.B. says SO THE DIFFERENCE IS
AN EMOTICON DESCRIBES HOW
SOMEONE FEELS, BUT AN EMOJI
CAN
BE
THE MESSAGE.
Kyla says YES! LIKE HOW I'D
SEND YOU THIS... IF I WANTED
TO SAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
E.B. says NICE. OKAY, SO
I UNDERSTAND THE "SHOW" PART
OF THE MYSTERY FILE TAG...
Kyla says ME TOO. ALL OF THE CLUES
HAVE LED US TO SYMBOLS
THAT SHOW THINGS.
E.B. says UH-HUH. BUT WHAT
ABOUT THE "TELL" PART?
Kyla says EVEN WHEN YOU'RE TRYING
TO MAKE COMMUNICATION EASIER,
IT JUST GETS HARDER.
E.B. sighs.
E.B. says I'M GONNA SEE IF
OUR EMOJI EXPERT CAN HELP.
SO, DEBBIE, DO YOU THINK
EMOJIS MAKE COMMUNICATION
EASIER OR HARDER?
Debbie says I'D PROBABLY SAY BOTH.
FOR A SIMPLE MESSAGE YOU COULD
POSSIBLY JUST USE EMOJIS, BUT
THEY DON'T ALWAYS TELL THE WHOLE
STORY. TYPICALLY AN EMOJI OR AN
EMOTICON IS USED TO EMBELLISH
A TEXT MESSAGE, SO THAT YOU GIVE
MORE MEANING TO YOUR MESSAGE
OR EVEN MORE EMOTION
TO YOUR MESSAGE.
E.B. says OKAY.
Debbie says I HAVE AN IDEA. WHY
DON'T WE PLAY ONE MORE GAME?
E.B. says SURE.
Debbie says SO, E.B., WHY DON'T
I TAKE A TURN FIRST AND MAKE
A MESSAGE AND SEE WHETHER YOU
CAN GUESS WHAT I'M THINKING OF.
Debbie combines 3 emojis: a key, a car and a basketball.
E.B. says MAYBE... YOU LOCKED YOUR
KEYS IN YOUR CAR, SO THEN YOU'RE
LIKE, "YOU KNOW WHAT? FORGET
DRIVING TO THE GROCERY STORE.
I'M JUST GONNA GO PLAY
BASKETBALL AT THE PARK INSTEAD."
Debbie says INTERESTING. YOU
CERTAINLY GOT SOME OF THE
KEY
THOUGHTS. KEY, PARDON THE PUN.
SO WHAT IF I ADD SOMETHING
EMOTIONAL TO IT...
E.B. says OOH...
Debbie says LIKE THAT?
She adds a sad emoji.
E.B. says OKAY. YOU DON'T LIKE
KEYS, SO YOU GOT A CAR THAT
DOESN'T NEED A KEY TO DRIVE.
INSTEAD IT'S A BASKETBALL.
INSTEAD OF THE KEY.
Debbie says WELL, YOU MIGHT HAVE
BEEN CLOSER THE FIRST TIME.
E.B. laughs.
E.B. says I THINK SO TOO.
Debbie says SO WHAT I WAS TRYING
TO SAY IS... AND YOU HAD THE
FIRST PART RIGHT. I LOCKED
MY KEYS IN THE CAR WHEN I WENT
TO THE BASKETBALL PRACTICE.
E.B. says OH.
Debbie says BY ADDING THE SAD FACE
I WAS ACTUALLY HOPING TO MAKE IT
CLEARER FOR YOU SO THAT YOU KNEW
I WAS UNHAPPY ABOUT SOMETHING.
SO, E.B., I GUESS WHAT THIS GAME
DEMONSTRATES MORE THAN ANYTHING
IS THAT YOU CAN CERTAINLY
SEND MESSAGES THAT ONLY
CONTAIN EMOJIS...
E.B. says UH-HUH.
Debbie says BUT IT'S KIND OF
DEPENDENT ON WHO YOU ARE,
WHO YOU'RE SENDING IT TO, AND
WHAT YOU UNDERSTAND THE MESSAGE
TO BE CAN BE COMPLETELY
MISUNDERSTOOD AT THE OTHER END.
E.B. says YEAH.
Debbie says SO IT'S ESSENTIALLY LOTS OF...
MISINTERPRETATIONS CAN HAPPEN
WHEN YOU'RE DOING IT THIS WAY.
E.B. says WELL, YOU KNOW, DEBBIE,
AT FIRST I WAS A BIT...
He holds up a question mark emoji and says A BIT
CONFUSED,
BUT NOW I FINALLY
THINK I KNOW WHAT AUNT HERMIONE
WAS TRYING TO
SAY.
He holds up a man speaking emoji.
E.B. and Debbie laugh.
He says THANK YOU SO MUCH
FOR ALL YOUR HELP.
Debbie says HEY, YOU'RE SO WELCOME.
IT WAS FUN. I'M GLAD TO HELP.
Kyla's phone rings.
Kyla grabs his phone and says HUH? A FIST AND A DOOR?
E.B. says I WAS SAYING, "KNOCK, KNOCK,"
BECAUSE I WAS RIGHT OUTSIDE.
Kyla says BUT WERE YOU OUTSIDE
WITH THE ANSWER TO THE MYSTERY?
E.B. says I THINK SO.
Kyla says COOL. OKAY, SO I KNOW THE
"SHOW" PART OF OUR MYSTERY IS
WHAT ALL THE CLUES WERE DOING.
E.B. says YUP. THE CAVE ART
SHOWED STORIES. THE STREET SIGN
SHOWED THE WAY. AND THE EMOJI
SHOWED ALL SORTS OF MESSAGES.
BUT THEN WHAT ABOUT THE
"TELL" PART OF THE MYSTERY?
Kyla says I KNOW! MAYBE HERMIONE
MEANT THAT WHEN YOU
SHOW
PICTURES YOU CAN
TELL
A STORY.
E.B. says YEAH. BUT NOT ALWAYS.
LIKE THE REAL MEANING OF THE
BON ECHO DRAWINGS MIGHT ONLY BE
KNOWN TO FIRST NATIONS ELDERS.
Kyla says THAT'S TRUE! AND
EMOJIS HAVE DIFFERENT MEANING
TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE. EVEN
STREET SIGNS CAN BE CONFUSING.
E.B. says I THINK WHAT HERMIONE
WAS TRYING TO TELL US IS THAT
A PICTURE CAN TELL A STORY, BUT
IF YOU WANT THE FULL PICTURE,
YOU STILL NEED WORDS.
Kyla says YES! GOOD JOB.
E.B. says YES!
Kyla says COOL.
They high-five.
E.B. says OH, BY THE WAY, I
FIGURED OUT YOUR EMMA MYSTERY.
UH-HUH. IT'S LEETSPEAK.
Kyla says LEE-WHAT?
E.B. says LEETSPEAK. IT'S A CODE
WHERE YOU REPLACE LETTERS
WITH NUMBERS. CHECK IT OUT.
THE 7 LOOKS KIND OF LIKE A "T,"
AND THE 15 LOOKS LIKE "IS."
Kyla says OH! I SEE IT NOW.
E.B. says SO IT'S SAYING, "THIS IS...
They both say ...GREAT.
THANKS, EMMA."
E.B. says YEAH. SHE'S
COMPLIMENTING OUR WEBSITE.
Kyla says COOL!
E.B. says UH-HUH.
Kyla says BUT HOW'D YOU WORK IT OUT?
E.B. says UH, WELL,
I CALLED AND ASKED HER.
Kyla says WHAT?
E.B. says HEY, HEY, SOMETIMES
IT'S BEST TO USE YOUR WORDS.
YEAH.
Kyla says THAT'S CHEATING.
E.B. says IT'S NOT CHEATING.
IT'S MORE OF, LIKE, A...
A LITTLE, LITTLE HINT.
They post a video and say MYSTERY SOLVED! POSTING
TO
THE MYSTERY FILES
WEBSITE.
Music plays as the end credits roll.
Cast, Ethan Burnett as E.B. and Kyla Madeira as Kyla.
Producers, Jean-Louis Coté and Joan Taketman.
Director, Zsolt Luka.
An Apartment 11 production.
Produced in association with TVO Kids.
Logo: TVO Kids.
The clip ends.
Arianna says HOW COOL WAS THAT?
IN THAT EPISODE
OF
THE MYSTERY FILES,
WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY
TO LEARN ABOUT PICTOGRAPHS
AND STREET SIGNS, EMOJIS,
AND REALLY THE POWER OF USING
IMAGES TO TELL STORIES.
PICTURES ARE POWERFUL.
WE ALSO LEARNED THAT ADDING
WORDS TO YOUR PICTURES
HELPS YOUR READER TO UNDERSTAND
YOUR WORK IN A CLEARER WAY.
WAIT-
She chuckles and says THIS REMINDS ME,
WE WERE WORKING
ON TELLING THE STORIES
OF OUR MEMORABLE MOMENTS.
SO, LET'S CONTINUE.
WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO IS I WANT
YOU TO TURN YOUR PAPER OVER.
REMEMBER WE WERE BRAINSTORMING
A LITTLE WHILE AGO
ABOUT OUR MEMORABLE MOMENT.
WHEN WE GOT TO THE "WHAT,"
I ASKED YOU TO THINK
ABOUT YOUR MEMORABLE MOMENT
FROM THE BEGINNING TO END
AND TO DO THAT
IN ABOUT FIVE SIMPLE STEPS.
WELL,
NOW WE'RE GONNA BE USING
SOME OF WHAT WE LEARNED FROM
E.B. AND KYLA ABOUT PICTURES
AND WE'RE GONNA USE IMAGES
TO BE ABLE TO HELP US
TELL THIS STORY
OF OUR MEMORABLE MOMENT.
WE'RE GONNA DO THIS
BY CREATING A STORYBOARD.
WHAT'S A STORYBOARD,
YOU ASK?
GREAT QUESTION.
STORYBOARDS ARE USED
IN A VARIETY OF INDUSTRIES
TO QUICKLY TELL THE STORY
OF SOMETHING.
THEY CAN BE USED WHEN CREATING
COMICS OR WHEN MAKING MOVIES.
IT'S BASICALLY A VISUAL
OF WHAT HAPPENS IN A STORY,
HELPING YOU TO UNDERSTAND
THE BEGINNING,
THE MIDDLE, AND THE END.
HERE'S MIKAELA TO HELP US
GET A GREATER UNDERSTANDING
OF STORYBOARDS IN THIS EPISODE
OF
WHEN I GROW UP.
LET'S TAKE A LOOK.
Mikaela pops up against a colourful animated background. She's around 12, with mid-length curly brown hair, and wears a blue sweater.
[whoosh]
(music plays)
She says MY NAME'S MIKAELA, AND SINCE
I CAN REMEMBER,
I'VE DREAMT ABOUT WHAT I'LL BE
WHEN I GROW UP!
THERE ARE SO MANY COOL JOBS,
SO I DECIDED TO TRY THEM ALL.
In animation, gear from different jobs appears on her: an astronaut's helmet, a construction worker's vest and helmet, a chef's hat and apron, and a police officer's hat and badge.
She says I BUILT AN AWESOME STUDIO IN
MY GARAGE,
SO I CAN MAKE AND SHARE VIDEOS
ABOUT MY JOURNEY.
She pops up in her garage. The place has a multi-coloured tile floor, hangers with different uniforms, a bike, a desk, and a colourful back wall with a graffiti that reads "When I grow up!"
She says IT'S ALL ABOUT DISCOVERING
WHAT I'LL BE
WHEN I GROW UP!
The name of the show appears in purple surrounded by colourful silhouettes of different animals and shapes. It reads "When I grow up."
A film countdown clocks appears.
Playing a video game, Mikaela COME ON, COME ON!
COME ON, COME ON, COME ON!
(explosion noise)
UGH!
I JUST CAN'T
BEAT THIS LEVEL.
THIS GAME IS HARD,
BUT VIDEO GAMES ARE SO AWESOME,
EVEN WHEN YOU LOSE.
THE CHARACTERS AND SCENES
ARE SO LIFELIKE,
THEY'RE LIKE LITTLE MOVIES
THAT YOU CONTROL!
IN FACT, DID YOU KNOW
SOME GAMES USE REAL ACTORS
TO PLAY THE CHARACTERS
IN THE GAME?
IT'S CALLED
MOTION CAPTURE.
THE ACTORS' MOTIONS ARE CAPTURED
WITH SPECIAL CAMERAS.
AND IT'S SOMEBODY'S JOB
TO PUT IT ALL TOGETHER.
COME TO THINK OF IT,
THAT WOULD BE AN AMAZING JOB!
WORKING WITH ARTISTS
AND DESIGNER AND ACTORS
TO MAKE THE MOST AMAZING
VIDEO GAME SCENES
THAT WOULD BLOW YOUR MIND!
WELL, THAT SETTLES IS.
I'M GONNA HELP MAKE
MOTION CAPTURE HAPPEN
SO I CAN HELP MAKE VIDEO GAMES
WHEN I GROW UP.
(game beeping)
Next, Mikaela says I FOUND A VIDEO GAME COMPANY
THAT HAS A MASSIVE STUDIO.
I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE
HOW BIG IT IS.
In a modern lobby, Mikaela says IMPRESSIVE!
NICELY DECORATED.
NOT AS BIG AS I THOUGHT A
PERFORMANCE CAPTION ROOM
WOULD BE, BUT.
Michelle is in her mid-twenties, with curly black hair. She wears blue jeans and a gray T-shirt.
Michelle says HI, MIKAELA.
Mikaela says HI, MICHELLE.
Michelle says WELCOME TO
UBISOFT TORONTO.
Mikaela says THANKS!
MICHELLE IS
THE SHOOT MANAGER HERE.
SHE WORKS WITH TONS
OF CREATIVE PEOPLE
TO HELP TURN HER IDEA
INTO A VIDEO GAME.
Michelle says READY TO
HAVE SOME FUN?
Mikaela says OF COURSE.
Michelle says THE STUDIO'S
THIS WAY.
Mikaela says OH.
Michelle says OVER 650 PEOPLE
WORK HERE RIGHT NOW.
Mikaela says WHO, THAT'S A LOT!
AND THEY ALL WORK
ON VIDEO GAMES?
Michelle says YEP, YEP.
SOME OF THEM
I CAN TALK ABOUT
BUT OTHERS
ARE TOP SECRET.
Mikaela says OOOH!
Michelle says MIKAELA, WELCOME TO OUR
PERFORMANCE CAPTURE STUDIO.
Mikaela says WHOA!
SO MANY CAMERAS!
Michelle says YEAH! YEAH, PART OF
MAKING VIDEO GAMES
IS BRINGING ACTORS,
STUNT PEOPLE,
AND SOMETIMES EVEN ANIMALS
INTO THE STUDIO
AND TRACKING
THEIR MOTION.
AS YOU CAN SEE,
WE'RE SURROUNDED
BY 80 T160 CAMERAS.
SO, THAT MEANS THEY CAN
SEE YOUR MOVEMENT
FROM EVERY
SINGLE ANGLE.
Wearing sunglasses and a red feather boa, Mikaela says 80 CAMERAS,
I'M READY FOR MY CLOSE-UP.
(video game noises)
Next, Mikaela says CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT ROOM?
USING JUST YOUR IMAGINATION,
YOU CAN TURN IT INTO ANYTHING.
AND THE ACTORS CAN BECOME
ANYONE, OR ANYTHING.
BUT IN ORDER TO ACT,
YOU NEED TO HAVE A STORY.
SO, IT'S TIME TO FIRE UP
THE OLD IMAGINATION.
(mechanical noises)
Now, they stand next to a whiteboard.
Michelle says AN IMPORTANT FIRST STEP
WHEN YOU'RE TELLING A STORY
IS STORYBOARDING.
Mikaela says WHAT'S A STORYBOARD?
Michelle says A STORYBOARD IS A SERIES
OF PICTURES OR PANELS
WHICH SHOW THE ACTOR WHAT
THEY'RE GOING TO BE DOING
ON THE PCAP STAGE.
Mikaela says IS THAT WHAT WE'RE
GONNA BE DOING?
Michelle says YEAH. WHAT KIND OF STORY
DO YOU WANNA TELL?
Mikaela says I'M GONNA TELL A STORY
ABOUT A ROBOT WHO WANTS
TO BECOME A DANCER.
Michelle says WELL, GOOD NEWS,
THE ONLY LIMIT
IS YOUR IMAGINATION.
SO, GET DRAWING!
Mikaela draws and says ONE DAY THERE WAS A ROBOT.
HE HAD AN IDEA
THAT HE WANTED TO DANCE.
HE PRACTISED
AND PRACTISED.
Michelle says AND WHAT KIND OF DANCER
DOES THE ROBOT WANNA BE?
Mikaela says WELL, HE USUALLY
DOES ALL DANCES,
BUT FOCUSES ON LIKE,
CONTEMPORARY AND BALLET.
Michelle says OOH, NICE.
Mikaela says AND THEN, ONE DAY
HE BECAME A DANCER.
AND, SCENE.
Michelle says BEAUTIFUL.
NOW THAT THE
STORYBOARD'S DONE,
DO YOU WANNA GO CHECK OUT
THE PCAP STAGE?
Mikaela says YEAH!
Michelle says LET'S DO IT.
Back in the studio, Mikaela says HEY! I'M INTERRUPTED YOUR
REGULARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING
BECAUSE EVER SINCE
MICHELLE TAUGHT ME
HOW TO DO A STORYBOARD,
I CAN'T STOP!
WATCH THIS.
("Flight of the bumblebee" playing)
Mikaela draws a storyboard.
Mikaela says SEE? I EVEN
PUT TOGETHER A STORYBOARD
THAT TELLS YOU MICHELLE'S STORY
SO YOU WON'T BE BORED.
CHECK IT OUT!
A slate reads "When they were growing up! By Mikaela."
An animated comic depicts Michelle's life.
Mikaela says WHEN MICHELLE
WAS GROWING UP,
SHE LOVED VIDEO GAMES
AND MOVIES.
SO IN UNIVERSITY,
SHE STUDIED RADIO BROADCASTING,
THEN WORKED
IN TV PRODUCTION.
THAT JOB PREPARED HER
FOR WORK IN VIDEO GAMES!
MICHELLE'S EXPERIENCE
HELPED HER
JUMP RIGHT INTO
A SHOOT MANAGER ROLE.
YOU NEVER KNOW
WHERE YOUR JOB WILL TAKE YOU.
The animated comic ends.
Mikaela says MAYBE A STORY ABOUT AN ALARM
CLOCK THAT LIKES TO SLEEP IN!
OR A TOASTER
THAT'S ALLERGIC TO BREAD.
OR A LIGHT BULB
THAT LOVES THE DARK!
AH, DON'T MIND ME.
I'M IN CREATIVE MODE.
SPEAKING OF WHICH,
BACK TO THE STUDIO.
Now, Mikaela appears wearing a black and green outfit with electronic gloves.
Mikaela says IT'S FINALLY TIME TO TRY MY HAND
AT PERFORMANCE CAPTURE,
SO I'M ALL SUITED UP.
I'M READY!
Michelle says THIS IS EDWIN. HE'S GONNA START
MARKERING YOU UP...
Mikaela and Edwin shake hands.
Mikaela says HI, EDWIN.
Michelle says WHICH MEANS HE'S GONNA PUT
THESE RETRO-REFLECTIVE MARKERS
ALL OVER YOUR SUIT.
SO, YOU'LL SEE THAT
YOU ALREADY HAVE SOME
ON YOUR HANDS AND FEET,
BUT THEY HAVE TO GO
ALL OVER
NEAR YOUR JOINTS
ON YOUR BODY,
SO WHERE YOUR BODY
BENDS AND MOVES
SO THAT THE SYSTEM CAN TRACK
YOUR MOVEMENT ACCURATELY.
Mikaela says SO, WHY DO WE NEED
THE MARKERS?
Michelle says THE CAMERAS ACTUALLY EMIT
INFRARED LIGHT,
AND THE HUMAN EYE
CAN'T SEE THIS,
BUT THESE LITTLE MARKERS
DEFINITELY CAN.
THAT INFRARED LIGHT
CAUSES THESE GUYS TO GLOW
AND THAT LIGHT IS REFLECTED
BACK INTO THE CAMERAS
AND THEN THE COMPUTER CAN SEE
YOUR BODY AS A SKELETON.
Mikaela says I'M PRETTY SURE
I HAVE A SKELETON.
Michelle says I GUESS THE COMPUTER
WILL DECIDE.
Ironically, Mikaela looks scared.
Michelle says LAST BUT NOT LEAST,
WE'RE GONNA PUT
GLASSES ON YOU
SO THAT THE SYSTEM
CAN UNDERSTAND
THAT YOU HAVE A HEAD.
Mikaela says I HAVE A HEAD.
OR AT LEAST NOW I DO.
Michelle chuckles and says SO, YOU CAN MOVE AROUND
A LITTLE BIT,
GET COMFORTABLE
IN THE SUIT.
THIS IS YOUR NEW BODY.
They all move and dance.
Michelle says OKAY, MIKAELA.
FIRST UP, WE'RE GONNA
RUN YOU THROUGH A ROM.
IT STANDS FOR
"RANGE OF MOTION."
IT'S BASICALLY
A BUNCH OF EXERCISES
WHICH ALLOWS THE COMPUTER
TO CREATE A VIRTUAL SKELETON.
Mikaela says RANGE OF MOTION.
GOT IT.
Michelle says DO YOU WANNA START?
Mikaela says YES.
Michelle says TAKE IT AWAY, EDWIN.
With black hair and a goatee, Edwin CAN I GET YOU TO T-POSE,
MIKAELA?
OKAY, NOW HANDS
ON YOUR SIDES.
TAKE 'EM BACK UP.
DOWN, AND UP.
AND THEN EXTEND.
WIGGLE YOUR FINGERS.
NOW MAKE A FIST.
OPEN UP.
UNDERSIDE,
OVER AGAIN, THEN UP.
AND BIG CIRCLES
WITH YOUR ARMS.
The computer shows a 3D version of Mikaela moving.
Edwin says GO THE OTHER WAY.
OKAY, NOW TAKE
FOUR STEPS FORWARD.
Mikaela says ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR.
Edwin says AND FOUR STEPS BACKWARDS.
Mikaela says ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR.
Edwin says SIGNATURE MOVE?
(martial arts sound effect)
A voice says HIYA!
Edwin says AWESOME.
Michelle says SO THIS ROM
IS ALLOWING THE COMPUTER
TO CREATE
A VIRTUAL SKELETON.
ONCE WE HAVE
YOUR SKELETON,
IT'S GOING TO BE DRIVEN BY
THE MARKERS ALL OVER YOUR BODY,
AND THAT'S GOING TO ALLOW US
TO SCALE YOUR SKELETON UP,
SCALE IT DOWN,
SO THAT DIFFERENT KINDS
OF CHARACTERS
CAN BE DRIVEN
BY YOUR BODY.
Mikaela says SO, I CAN BECOME
A 10,000 POUND GORILLA?
OR AN INTERDIMENSIONAL
SNAKE MONSTER?
OR A RADIOACTIVE
FIRE-BREATHING DINOSAUR!
(beeping)
An animated dinosaur roars.
Mikaela says BUT IF I WANNA USE A PROP,
LIKE A BANANA?
OR A PAINTBRUSH?
OR A SNEAKER?
Michelle says WE MARKER OUR PROPS IN THE SAME
WAY THAT WE MARKER OUR ACTORS.
FOR EXAMPLE, THIS FLOWER.
OUR MARKERS ARE RIGHT HERE,
HERE, HERE, AND HERE.
Mikaela says OKAY. COOL!
Michelle says SO, MIKAELA, NOW THAT WE HAVE
YOUR VIRTUAL SKELETON,
IT'S TIME TO MEET
THE NEW YOU.
Mikaela jumps and a virtual alien replicates her moves on a screen.
Mikaela says WHOA!
IS THAT REALLY ME?
Michelle says YEP. WELL,
THAT'S YOU DRIVING JUDGE.
HE'S AN ALIEN
FROM ONE OF OUR GAMES
THAT'S IN PRODUCTION
RIGHT NOW
IN ONE OF OUR
TEST ENVIRONMENTS.
Mikaela says THIS IS SO FUN.
HOW DID YOU TURN MY BODY
INTO THAT?
Michelle says SO, SINCE THE COMPUTER
KNOWS YOUR SKELETON
AND KNOWS
JUDGE'S SKELETON,
THEY CAN BASICALLY
MEET IN THE MIDDLE
AND THEN LET YOUR MARKERS
DRIVE JUDGE.
Mikaela says WHAT'S UP, JUDGE?
I'M JUDGE!
I'M JUDGE!
I'M MIKAELA-JUDGE!
Michelle says SO, NOW IT'S TIME
FOR THE BEST PART OF MY JOB.
LET'S HAVE SOME FUN!
Mikaela says LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
I GIVE YOU
THE DANCING ROBOT!
ONCE UPON A TIME,
THERE WAS A LONELY ROBOT.
HE WISHED AND HE WISHED
HE COULD JUST DANCE.
BUT HE WAS A ROBOT
SO HE COULDN'T.
BUT WITH PRACTICE...
AND HE PRACTISED...
She moves and turns as she speaks.
She continues HE WENT TO
HIS FIRST CONCERT.
EVERYBODY LOVED HIM!
AND HE BECAME
THE FIRST EVER DANCING ROBOT.
Michelle says BRAVO!
Mikaela says SCENE.
THIS REAL-TIME PERFORMANCE
CAPTURE IS THE COOLEST.
IT MAKES MY BODY
LOOK WAY DIFFERENT.
I JUST WONDER HOW THEY CAPTURE
PEOPLE'S FACES
TO TELL IF THEY'RE
HAPPY OR SAD.
Michelle says MIKAELA,
IN ORDER TO CAPTURE
REALLY COMPLEX FACIAL
EXPRESSIONS,
WE USE ONE OF THESE.
IT'S CALLED AN HMC,
OR A HEAD-MOUNTED CAMERA.
WANNA TRY IT ON?
Mikaela says SURE.
Michelle says THERE YOU GO.
YOU CAN SEE HERE,
THERE ARE A FEW CAMERAS
INWARD-FACING
THAT ARE CAPTURING ALL
OF YOUR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS.
USUALLY WE'LL PUT
MARKERS ON YOUR FACE
JUST LIKE THE ONES THAT WERE
ON YOUR BODY BEFORE.
THESE CAMERAS PICK UP
THE WAY THAT THEY MOVE
AND ALLOW OUR ANIMATORS
TO REPLICATE THEM
AND CREATE REALLY
REALISTIC EXPRESSIONS.
Mikaela says SO IT WILL KNOW IF I'M HAPPY...
OR SAD.
OR CONFUSED?
(spring noise)
OR ANGRY!
(train whistle tooting)
WITH THE CLICK
OF A FEW BUTTONS,
YOU CAN TRANSFORM INTO
ANYTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE.
BE IT A ROBOT...
A LION...
OR A DINOSAUR.
(thundering footsteps)
ANYTHING.
MOTION CAPTURE
MAKES VIDEO GAMES
AND MOVIES
TOTALLY AMAZING.
I THINK I FIGURED OUT
WHAT TO DO.
AND IT'S TO TRY MORE JOBS!
THE HUNT CONTINUES.
JOIN ME NEXT TIME
WHEN I CAPTURE THE MOTION
OF DISCOVERING
WHAT I'LL BE...
WHEN I GROW UP!
(music plays)
The end credits roll.
Arianna says THANKS, MIKAELA.
STORYBOARDS ARE POWERFUL TOOLS
TO QUICKLY TELL A STORY.
REMEMBER YOUR
MEMORABLE MOMENT?
REMEMBER HOW YOU WROTE DOWN
THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS
IN FIVE SIMPLE STEPS?
NOW IT'S TIME
TO GET DRAWING AND WRITING
OUR VERY OWN STORYBOARDS.
IT'S PRETTY EASY.
SO, LET'S GET STARTED
BY CREATING FIVE BOXES TOGETHER.
I'M JUST GONNA DRAW THEM HERE.
(marker scratching)
MAKE SURE THAT YOU LEAVE
A LITTLE BIT OF ROOM
UNDERNEATH
EACH OF YOUR BOXES
SO THAT YOU CAN
INCLUDE A CAPTION.
I JUST DREW FIVE BOXES HERE.
CAPTIONS SIMPLY
TELL THE READER
WHAT'S HAPPENING
IN EACH OF YOUR DRAWINGS.
SO, SEE? I'VE LEFT
A LITTLE BIT OF SPACE HERE
AND THAT'S WHERE
I'M GONNA ADD MY WORDS.
ADDING WORDS DEFINITELY
HELP THE READER
TO UNDERSTAND WHAT'S HAPPENING
IN OUR PICTURES.
I'M NOT ALWAYS
THE GREATEST ARTIST,
SO THEY DEFINITELY
COME IN HANDY.
NOW THAT WE HAVE YOUR BOXES,
YOU'RE READY TO BEGIN.
I WANT YOU TO THINK
ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED FIRST
AND START THERE.
DRAW A PICTURE IN THE BOX
AND THEN WRITE A DESCRIPTION
AT THE BOTTOM.
KEEP IN MIND THOSE ADJECTIVES
AND ADVERBS WHEN YOU'RE WRITING-
THE ONES THAT
WE LEARNED ABOUT EARLIER.
REMEMBER TEACHER WINNIE?
THEY ALSO HELP TO MAKE OUR
STORIES EVEN MORE INTERESTING,
SO PLEASE KEEP THAT IN MIND.
WE'RE GONNA KEEP GOING
WITH EACH OF OUR BOXES
UNTIL WE'VE TOLD BASICALLY THE
STORY OF OUR MEMORABLE EVENT.
WHEN YOU'RE FINISHED
DRAWING YOUR IMAGES
AND DOING YOUR WRITING,
I WANT YOU TO FEEL FREE
TO COLOUR THEM IN.
MAKE SURE THAT YOUR STORYBOARD
LOOKS AS INCREDIBLE
AS THE MOMENT ITSELF.
MAYBE WHEN YOU'RE FINISHED
YOU COULD ALSO SHARE IT
WITH ONE OF THE PEOPLE
IN YOUR STORY.
I'M SURE THAT THEY WOULD LOVE
TO RELIVE THAT MOMENT WITH YOU.
HERE'S MY FINISHED
STORYBOARD.
I WANNA SHARE IT
WITH YOU,
JUST SO THAT YOU CAN UNDERSTAND
MY MEMORABLE MOMENT
A LITTLE BIT BETTER.
SO, I'VE GOT IT HERE.
SEE MY PICTURES?
The first box of her sotryboard shows a crossed sleeping emoji.
Arianna says I'M NOT THE GREATEST ARTIST
BUT I GAVE IT A TRY.
THE FIRST ONE HERE-
IT SAYS THAT IT WAS
MY FIRST DAY OF TEACHING.
THE NIGHT BEFORE,
I WAS SO NERVOUS
THAT I BARELY GOT ANY SLEEP.
I REMEMBERED THOSE EMOJIS AND
I TRIED TO MAKE ONE HERE TOO.
IN THE SECOND BOX IT SAYS THAT
I FINALLY GOT A BIT OF SLEEP.
I WOKE UP FEELING LIKE
I HAD SPEEDY BUTTERFLIES
FLYING AROUND IN MY STOMACH!
NEXT, I WALKED
INTO MY NEW SCHOOL
AND MET HELPFUL TEACHERS
WHO GAVE ME A QUICK TOUR
AND HELPED ME
FIND MY CLASSROOM.
MY FOURTH BOX-
I MET SOME
REALLY INCREDIBLE STUDENTS
THAT WERE SO KIND
AND IN THAT MOMENT
I REALIZED THAT THEY WERE JUST
AS NERVOUS ABOUT MEETING ME
AS I WAS ABOUT MEETING THEM.
AND THEN LASTLY,
AT THE END OF THE DAY
WHEN I WAS REALLY, REALLY
EXHAUSTED-- REMEMBER THAT?
I WROTE DOWN HERE THAT AS I
LOOKED AROUND MY NEW CLASSROOM,
I FELT AT HOME
IN MY NEW SCHOOL.
THAT'S MY MEMORABLE MOMENT.
WHAT'S YOURS?
CREATE YOUR STORYBOARD IN ORDER
TO BE ABLE TO TELL YOUR STORY.
THAT'S OUR TIME FOR TODAY.
THANK YOU FOR SPENDING THIS
POWER HOUR OF LEARNING
WITH ME.
TODAY WE HAD A BLAST
ABOUT LEARNING ABOUT
AND THINKING ABOUT
MEMORABLE MOMENTS.
AFTER TAKING SOME TIME
TO PICK OUR VERY OWN,
WE SPENT SOME TIME LEARNING
ABOUT ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS.
WE ALSO LEARNED
ABOUT THE FIVE WS-
THE WHO, WHAT,
WHERE, WHEN, AND WHY
AS WE USED THEM TO HELP US
BRAINSTORM THE STORY
OF OUR MEMORABLE MOMENT.
WE HAD THE CHANCE TO LEARN
ABOUT THE POWER OF PICTURES
FROM E.B. AND KYLA,
AND MIKAELA TAUGHT US
ABOUT STORYBOARDS.
WE ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO
START OUR VERY OWN STORYBOARD
ABOUT OUR MEMORABLE MOMENT.
AND WE DID ALL OF THIS
IN AN HOUR.
CONGRATULATIONS.
IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED
YOUR STORYBOARD YET,
NOT TO WORRY.
TAKE SOME TIME AFTER THE SHOW
TO CONTINUE YOUR WORK,
AND REMEMBER TO SHARE IT
WITH SOMEONE SPECIAL.
THANKS AGAIN FOR SPENDING THIS
POWER HOUR OF LEARNING
WITH ME.
UNTIL NEXT TIME,
PLEASE TAKE CARE.
She smiles, waves and says BYE.
A final slate reads "TVO Kids would like to thank all the teachers involved in the Power Hour of Learning as they continue to teach the children of Ontario from their homes."
The caption changes to "Copyright 2021. The Ontario Educational Communications Authority."
