Transcript: Donating | Junior Lesson | TVOkids
(soft music plays)
An animated title against a sunny sky reads "TVOKids Power Hour of Learning."
In off, Laura says WELCOME TO
TVOKIDS POWER HOUR
OF LEARNING.
TODAY'S JUNIOR LESSON: DONATING.
A caption reads "Junior 4-6, Teacher Vickie." Vickie is in her late thirties, with curly black hair. She wears a pink sweater, earrings and a long silver necklace.
Vickie says HI, FRIENDS, AND WELCOME!
I'M TEACHER VICKIE
AND I'M SO GLAD THAT YOU COULD
JOIN US HERE TODAY.
TODAY WE ARE
GOING TO BE LEARNING
ALL ABOUT THE WORD "DONATIONS."
BUT BEFORE WE GET STARTED,
LET'S MAKE SURE THAT
WE ARE FOCUSED AND RELAXED
AND READY TO LEARN.
SO, WE'RE GOING TO TRY
SOMETHING THAT I USE WITH
MY STUDENTS CALLED
BOXED BREATHING.
YOU'RE GOING TO INHALE FOR FOUR,
YOU'RE GOING TO
HOLD IT FOR FOUR,
EXHALE FOR FOUR,
AND HOLD FOR FOUR.
SO, IT'S GOING TO
LOOK LIKE THIS.
She inhales and exhales counting with her fingers.
She says ARE YOU READY TO TRY IT WITH ME?
HERE WE GO. INHALE FOR FOUR.
GREAT JOB.
I'M FEELING MORE RELAXED
AND I'M READY TO BE
FOCUSED AND LEARN.
BUT I HAVE A QUESTION TO ASK
YOU BEFORE WE GET STARTED.
DO YOU THINK THAT YOU
CAN CHANGE THE WORLD?
IF YOU SAID, YES,
YOU ARE RIGHT!
YES, I BELIEVE THAT
YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD,
AND I'M SURE SOME
OF YOU ALREADY ARE.
TODAY, WE ARE GOING TO SEE
AND HEAR SOME EXAMPLES
OF PEOPLE JUST LIKE YOU
WHO ARE MAKING GREAT CHANGES
AND DOING AMAZING
THINGS IN THEIR SCHOOLS,
AND HOMES, AND COMMUNITIES.
BUT TO HELP US LEARN,
I'D LIKE TO
INTRODUCE AN ASSISTANT.
TODAY, ASSISTING US WILL
BE MY DAUGHTER VICTORIA!
Victoria is in her early teens, with short blond hair. She wears a green shirt and a heart necklace.
Victoria says HELLO, EVERYONE!
I AM EXCITED TO HELP YOU
LEARN TODAY ABOUT DONATIONS,
WE ARE GOING TO BE LEARNING
ABOUT PLACES AND WAYS
THAT YOU CAN DONATE,
BUT BEFORE WE BEGIN,
YOU'LL NEED SOME MATERIALS
THROUGHOUT TODAY.
YOU WILL NEED A MAKER,
A PEN OR A PENCIL,
AND OF COURSE A PAPER.
LET'S GET STARTED.
Vickie says DO YOU KNOW OF ANY
FRIENDS IN YOUR COMMUNITY
THAT ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE?
ARE YOU PART OF
AN ECO-TEAM AT SCHOOL?
HAVE YOU EVER PLANTED A TREE?
MAYBE A POLLINATOR GARDEN?
DO YOU TAKE REUSABLE SHOPPING
BAGS WHEN YOU GO TO THE STORE?
DO YOU HAVE
A REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE?
DO YOU TURN OFF THE LIGHTS
WHEN YOU LEAVE A ROOM?
WELL, THESE ARE ALL WAYS THAT
YOU CAN MAKE POSITIVE CHANGES
IN YOUR COMMUNITY.
AND I KNOW SOMEBODY
WHO IS DOING THAT.
I CALL HER MY LITTLE ECO-WARRIOR
AND SHE HAPPENS TO BE
SITTING RIGHT NEXT TO ME.
VICTORIA, WHY DON'T YOU
TELL OUR FRIENDS AT HOME
SOME OF THE WAYS YOU ARE
BEING A CHANGE AGENT.
Victoria says ONE WAY THAT I AM
HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT
IS THAT I GO AROUND PARKS,
FORESTS, AND OPEN AREAS
AND I PICK UP GARBAGE
THAT I SEE ON THE GROUND,
AND EITHER I THROW IT IN
THE RECYCLING OR THE GARBAGE.
AND TO MAKE SURE THAT I AM SAFE,
I ALWAYS BRING THESE GLOVES
SO THAT I DON'T GET ANY GERMS
OR ANYTHING THAT
IS ON THE GARBAGE.
AND OF COURSE, TO BE EXTRA SAFE,
I ALWAYS BRING AN ADULT WITH ME.
Vickie says THOSE ARE SOME GREAT WAYS
THAT YOU CAN BE A CHANGE AGENT,
AND DO SOMETHING THAT'S
GREAT FOR THE EARTH
AND DONATE YOUR TIME.
Victoria says THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS THAT
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
IN YOUR SCHOOL,
HOME, AND COMMUNITY.
SOMEONE I READ
ABOUT AT MY SCHOOL
AND AT HOME ON
THE WEBSITES IS TERRY FOX.
A black and white picture shows a young man with a prosthetic leg standing in front of a car.
Vickie says TERRY FOX IS A REALLY
GREAT EXAMPLE OF A CANADIAN
WHO MADE GREAT CHANGES,
AND HIS LEGACY
IS CONTINUING TODAY.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN
AT SCHOOL ABOUT HIM?
Victoria says TERRY FOX...
I LEARNED THAT TERRY FOX IS
A CANADIAN WHO HAD CANCER,
HE RAN A MARATHON WHEN
HE WAS 18-YEARS OLD
ON HIS PROSTHETIC LEG.
HE CALLED THIS
THE MARATHON OF HOPE.
HE ASKED PEOPLE TO DONATE
MONEY TO CANCER RESEARCH.
AND THIS-- THIS YEAR...
EVERY YEAR, ALL OVER THE WORLD,
PEOPLE WALK OR RUN
FOR THE TERRY FOX WALK
AND THEY RAISE MONEY
FOR CANCER RESEARCH.
HIS LEGACY CONTINUES,
AND TERRY SAYS ANYTHING
IS POSSIBLE IF YOU TRY.
Vickie says TERRY FOX IS A PERFECT
EXAMPLE, VICTORIA,
AND OVER 60 COUNTRIES
PARTICIPATE IN
THE TERRY FOX WALK
EVERY SINGLE YEAR.
HE CONTINUES TO BE
AN INSPIRATION FOR CANADIANS.
FRIENDS AT HOME,
DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN
THE TERRY FOX WALK WITH
YOUR SCHOOL OR COMMUNITY?
LET'S WATCH A VIDEO NOW
AND NOTICE HOW PEOPLE JUST LIKE
YOU CAN MAKING AMAZING CHANGES,
AND DONATING THEIR TIME
IN THEIR COMMUNITIES.
WE'RE GOING TO LEARN ABOUT
A CANADIAN THAT HAS INSPIRED ME,
NAMED AUTUMN PELTIER.
AUTUMN IS AN INDIGENOUS CANADIAN
FROM THE ANISHINAABE REGION
WHO IS A WATER ACTIVIST.
SHE IS TRYING TO ENSURE
THAT THERE IS CLEAN WATER IN
FIRST NATIONS COMMUNITIES
AND ALSO SHE IS ADVOCATING FOR
THE CONSERVATION OF WATER
FOR MOTHER EARTH.
LET'S WATCH NOW
AND LEARN MORE ABOUT HER STORY.
(upbeat music playing)
Logo: TVO Kids News.
Daniel dances in the set.
Daniel is in his twenties, with short curly brown hair and wears glasses, jeans, and a red T-shirt under an unbuttoned pink shirt.
He says TVOK NEWS
IS BACK,
AND WITH A BIG QUESTION.
CAN KIDS CHANGE THE WORLD?
WELL, THE STUDENTS OF
ST. MARGUERITE BOURGEOYS
CATHOLIC SCHOOL WILL TELL YOU
THAT THEY CAN AND THEY ARE.
LET'S CHECK IN.
A clip shows school students say
KIDS CAN CHANGE THE WORLD!
A girl with glasses says I HELP THE ENVIRONMENT
BY PICKING UP GARBAGE.
A girl with brown hair in a bun says AND THROWING IT
IN THE RIGHT BINS.
A boy with curly brown hair says AND PICK UP LITTER
FROM THE GROUND,
IF THEY HAVE GLOVES.
A boy with very short black hair says I LIKE,
BRUSH MY TEETH,
BUT I DON'T LEAVE THE TAP
RUNNING SO I PRESERVE WATER.
A girl with wavy black hair says I'M TRYING TO TURN OFF
HALF THE LIGHTS.
A boy with short straight brown hair says I'M PLANTING FLOWERS
AND A FEW SEEDS
IN OUR GARDEN.
A girl with curly brown hair says BECAUSE THEY PRODUCE OXYGEN
AND BEES,
THEY POLLINATE THE FLOWERS,
WHICH HELPS THE ENVIRONMENT.
They all say KIDS CAN CHANGE THE WORLD!
Daniel says AND PLEASE WELCOME
AUTUMN PELTIER,
WHO IS VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT
SAVING AND CARING FOR
THE WATER ON EARTH.
SHE'S 13,
AND HAS WON YOUTH NOBEL PRIZE,
MET THE PRIME MINISTER,
AND SPOKEN TO THE UNITED NATIONS
ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF WATER.
AUTUMN, TELL US,
WHAT DOES WATER MEAN TO YOU?
Autumn has long brown hair in a top knot and wears a gray sweatshirt.
She says WELL,
TO ME,
WATER IS REALLY IMPORTANT,
AND IT'S IMPORTANT
THAT WE AS ANISHINAABE PEOPLE
AND EVERYONE PROTECTS
THE WATER,
BECAUSE WE WERE ONLY GIVEN
SO MUCH WATER,
AND SO MUCH CLEAN
DRINKING WATER.
AND THERE'S INDUSTRIES AND
COMPANIES POLLUTING THE WATER,
AND I'M ADVOCATING
FOR THE WATER BECAUSE
WITHOUT WATER NONE OF US
WILL BE ABLE TO SURVIVE.
Daniel says SO WHY IS WATER
EVERYONE'S ISSUE?
Autumn says WELL, WATER IS THE LIFEBLOOD
OF MOTHER EARTH,
AND EVERYONE LIVES IN WATER
FOR NINE MONTHS IN THE WOMB,
AND WE'RE ALL BORN
FROM WATER.
AND WITHOUT WATER,
WE CAN'T LIVE.
SO THAT'S WHY I FEEL IT'S
EVERYONE'S ISSUE,
AND WHY EVERYONE SHOULD BE
ADVOCATES FOR THE WATER.
Pictures show Autumn holding up a copper bowl.
Daniel says OKAY, SO WHAT WAS IT LIKE
TALKING TO LEADERS OF
THE UNITED NATIONS?
A picture of Autumn speaking at the UN appears.
Autumn says WELL, TO ME, SPEAKING TO THE
LEADERS OF THE UNITED NATIONS
WAS A HUGE HONOUR,
AND A BIG OPPORTUNITY FOR ME
TO ADVOCATE FOR THE WATER,
AND ADVOCATE FOR
FIRST NATIONS PEOPLE.
AND IT WAS A REALLY AMAZING
EXPERIENCE,
AND I FELT VERY HEARD
FROM THE LEADERS.
Daniel says THIS IS SO INSPIRING.
TELL US ABOUT MEETING
THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA.
Autumn says IN 2015,
I WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY
TO GIVE HIM A WATER BUNDLE.
AND WHEN I HAD THE CHANCE,
I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW
WHAT I WAS GONNA DO,
I JUST STOOD RIGHT IN FRONT
OF HIM, AND THEN I SAID,
"I'M REALLY UNHAPPY WITH
THE CHOICES YOU'VE MADE
"AND BROKEN PROMISES
TO MY PEOPLE."
THEN HE SAID,
"I UNDERSTAND THAT."
AND THEN I STARTED CRYING.
AND HE SAID,
"I'LL PROTECT THE WATERS."
Daniel says WOW.
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR KIDS
WHO WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD,
LIKE YOU?
Autumn says ANYONE CAN DO THE WORK
THAT I'M DOING,
AND I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE OTHER
YOUTHS TO DO THE WORK
THAT I'M DOING,
AND YOUNGER CHILDREN,
BECAUSE IF WE ALL DO THIS WORK,
WE CAN HOPEFULLY MAKE A CHANGE.
Daniel says WELL THANK YOU AUTUMN,
FOR ALL THAT YOU DO,
AND HAVE DONE FOR OUR
WATER ISSUES HERE IN CANADA,
AND THE WORLD.
Autumn says THANKS FOR HAVING ME,
TVO KIDS.
Daniel says AND THANK YOU GUYS
FOR WATCHING
TVOK NEWS.
THAT'S IT FOR ME.
Logo: TVO Kids News.
Victoria reappears and says WOW, I LOVED AUTUMN'S MESSAGE
THAT IF WE DO THE WORK
WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD
IN SO MANY WAYS,
BUT ONE OF THE WAYS WE CAN
CHANGE THE WORLD IS BY DONATING.
Vickie says THAT'S RIGHT, VICTORIA.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT
THE WORD "DONATING" MEANS?
DONATING MEANS WHEN YOU
SHARE THE RESOURCES YOU HAVE
WITH OTHERS.
SOMETIMES PEOPLE
DONATE THEIR TIME,
LIKE AUTUMN PELTIER
WAS DOING IN THE VIDEO.
OR LIKE VICTORIA'S DOING BY
PICKING UP AND REMOVING LITTER
FROM THE COMMUNITY SHE LIVES IN.
SOMETIMES, THOUGH, PEOPLE MIGHT
CHOOSE TO DONATE ITEMS.
Victoria says I HAVE THIS PAIR OF SHORTS HERE
THAT DOES NOT FIT ME ANYMORE,
BUT IS IN VERY GOOD SHAPE,
SO I AM GOING TO DONATE IT
TO SOMEONE WHO CAN USE IT,
RATHER THAN ME THROWING IT OUT.
IF YOU HAVE CLOTHES AT
HOME THAT DON'T FIT YOU EITHER,
YOU COULD DONATE IT TO
SOMEONE WHO CAN USE IT.
INSTEAD OF THROWING
IT IN A LANDFILL,
BECAUSE IT'S ALSO
BETTER FOR THE EARTH.
Vickie says IT'S A GREAT IDEA
TO DONATE CLOTHING
BECAUSE IT ALSO HELPS
PEOPLE AND MOTHER EARTH.
ANOTHER THING THAT WE DONATE
AS A FAMILY ARE CANNED GOODS.
THESE ARE NON-PERISHABLE
ITEMS THAT YOU CAN DONATE.
NON-PERISHABLE MEANS THAT IT
WILL LAST FOR A LONGER TIME
AND DOES NOT NEED
TO GO INTO THE FRIDGE,
THINGS LIKE
CANNED SOUP OR BEANS.
Victoria says ALSO, SOMETIMES PEOPLE MAY
DONATE MONEY BY RAISING MONEY
WITH AN ORGANIZATION
OR CHARITY THEY CARE ABOUT.
Vickie shoes a piece of paper and says I HAVE A GREAT IDEA, VICTORIA.
WHY DON'T WE MAKE
A LIST OF IMPORTANT CAUSES
THAT WE MIGHT DONATE TO,
AND OUR FRIENDS AT HOME
CAN PARTICIPATE.
SO, FRIENDS AT HOME,
IF YOU HAVE A PIECE OF PAPER
YOU CAN GRAB ONE
AND YOU CAN MAKE A LIST AS WELL.
Victoria says SOUNDS GOOD. HERE'S A TIP.
IF YOU HAVE A PIECE OF PAPER
NEARBY YOU CAN WRITE THEM DOWN,
BUT IF YOU DON'T, YOU CAN ALWAYS
USE A PAPER THAT IS NOT AS GOOD
AND IT HAS STUFF ON IT
ON THE OTHER SIDE.
IT'S CALLED GOOS BIN PAPER.
GOOS BIN PAPER IS
GOOD ON ONE SIDE
AND WHEN-- IT'S WHEN A PAPER
IS HEADED FOR THE RECYCLING BIN
BUT INSTEAD YOU DECIDE
TO USE IT ONE MORE TIME.
THIS IS ALSO GOOD FOR THE EARTH
AND SOMETHING YOU CAN DO
TO TAKE ACTION.
Vickie says GREAT IDEA, VICTORIA.
SO, LET'S ADD THE WORD TO
OUR LIST, "DONATING FOOD."
OKAY.
WHAT ELSE CAN WE ADD?
Victoria says HM.
Vickie says MAYBE "CONSERVING WATER."
JUST LIKE AUTUMN PELTIER
TAUGHT US IN THE VIDEO.
THAT COULD ALSO MEAN DOING
SOMETHING LIKE TURNING OFF
THE TAP WHEN YOU
BRUSH YOUR TEETH,
OR MAYBE SHORTER SHOWERS.
Victoria says MM-HM.
Vickie says HM.
Victoria says WE COULD ALSO ADD
"CLEANING THE EARTH."
Vickie says GREAT IDEA.
LET'S ADD "CLEANING THE EARTH."
Vickie writes down the ideas mentioned and continues THAT'S A GREAT LIST.
HOW ARE YOU DOING,
FRIENDS AT HOME?
FEEL FREE TO ADD
ANY OF YOUR OWN IDEAS.
IF YOU WANT SOME MORE IDEAS,
WELL, WE HAVE ANOTHER VIDEO
COMING UP THAT IS GOING TO SHOW
US SOME OTHER GREAT STUDENTS
THAT ARE DOING AMAZING
THINGS IN THEIR COMMUNITY.
AS YOU WATCH I WANT
YOU TO THINK ABOUT
HOW ARE PEOPLE DONATING?
ARE THEY USING
THEIR TIME, RESOURCES,
AND WHAT ARE THE CAUSES
THAT THEY ARE DONATING FOR?
Daniel says WELCOME BACK TO TVOK NEWS.
I'M DANIEL,
AND I WANT YOU TO MEET
MOM JESSICA,
AND TWINS TAMARA AND JEREMY.
THEY CREATED THE FRIEND SEND,
A KINDNESS PROJECT
THAT MAILS CARDS TO KIDS
ALL OVER ONTARIO AND CANADA.
LET'S CHECK OUT
THEIR AMAZING STORY.
Jessica, Tamara and Jeremy sit on a sofa. Jessica is in her thirties, with long black hair. She wears a black shirt and a leaf necklace.
Jessica says I STARTED SEEING ALL
THESE POSTS ON FACEBOOK
AND ON THE INTERNET ABOUT
CHILDREN HAVING
BIRTHDAY PARTIES,
AND SOMETIMES NO OTHER
CHILDREN WOULD SHOW UP.
In her early teens with blond hair, Tamara says SHE TOLD US,
AND WE FIGURED OUT WE HAD TO
DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.
SO, WE THOUGHT OF
AN IDEA TO SEND THE CARDS,
AND WE THOUGHT TO
MAKE THE FRIEND SEND.
Jessica says AND THEN WE STARTED THINKING,
WELL, THERE'S KIDS
ALSO WHO ARE BULLIED,
AND WE REALLY BETTER DO
SOMETHING TO HELP THEM TOO.
SO WE STARTED SENDING OUT CARDS
TO KIDS WHO ARE BULLIED AS WELL.
Jeremy is around 10, with short blond hair.
Jeremy says FOR EACH PERSON WE
WRITE A DIFFERENT MESSAGE.
BUT WE ALWAYS JUST TRY...
WE MAKE IT PERSONAL,
AND WE ALWAYS JUST TRY TO GIVE
THAT BOOST OF ENCOURAGEMENT
IN THEM, AND JUST MAKE THEM FEEL
POSITIVE ABOUT THEMSELF.
Getting ready to write a card, he says I THINK I'M GONNA SAY,
"BENNETT,
HE IS ALWAYS CARED ABOUT,
AND YOU ARE AN AWESOME KID."
Then, he says FIRST, MY MOM GETS
THE e-mail ADDRESS
AND INFO ABOUT THE KID,
AND ALL THAT.
Tamara says WE FIND A CARD THAT FITS THEM
AND A MESSAGE THAT FITS THEM.
WE WRITE THAT DOWN ON THE CARD.
Jeremy says WE PUT SOME STICKERS
ON THE CARD,
AND THEN WE PUT IT IN
THE ENVELOPE, DESIGN IT,
THEN WE ALL GO
AND PUT IT IN THE MAILBOX.
I THINK THEY DEFINITELY
FEEL REALLY GOOD,
KNOWING THAT NOT JUST
THEIR FAMILY SUPPORTS THEM,
THAT EVERYONE SUPPORTS THEM,
AND YOU'RE NOT ALONE.
Tamara says IF THEY HEAR FROM OTHER KIDS,
THEY KNOW THAT IT'S SPECIAL,
BECAUSE WE GO
THROUGH THE SAME STUFF.
AND THEY'LL THINK IT'S
A LOT MORE POSITIVE TO
HEAR FROM ANOTHER KID.
Jessica says OTHER PARENTS WANT TO DO
THIS WITH THEIR CHILDREN.
WE'VE HAD GRANDPARENTS ASKING TO
DO IT WITH THEIR GRANDCHILDREN,
AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
IT'S SO EXCITING FOR US TO KNOW
THAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE TAKING
THE KINDNESS WE'RE DOING,
AND TAKING IT
INTO THEIR OWN HOMES,
AND SPREADING IT OUT TO
THESE CHILDREN WHO REALLY
NEED THE SMILES.
Tamara and Jeremy put cards into mailboxes.
She continues SO, IF ANYBODY WOULD
LIKE TO DO THIS AS WELL,
WE'RE SO EXCITED TO HAVE
OTHER PEOPLE JOIN THE PROJECT.
THEY CAN WRITE
TO US ON OUR WEBSITE.
Jeremy says THEFRIENDSEND.CA.
Daniel says JESSICA, JEREMY, AND TAMARA
STARTED THE FRIEND SEND
FOUR MONTHS AGO,
AND HAVE SENT OVER
100 CARDS TO KIDS 12 AND UNDER
THROUGHOUT CANADA.
WHAT AN AMAZING ACT OF KINDNESS.
THE FRIEND SEND IS MAKING
THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE.
AND IF YOU HAVE A STORY WE
NEED TO SHARE ON TVOK NEWS,
EMAIL US AT TVOKIDS.COM.
AND TELL US ALL ABOUT IT.
ANYWAY, I'M DANIEL,
THANKS FOR WATCHING,
AND SEE YOU NEXT WEEK.
Vickie says WHAT A BEAUTIFUL
STORY FRIEND SEND WAS.
I REALLY ENJOYED
LEARNING ABOUT THAT STORY.
WHAT WERE THE PEOPLE IN
THE VIDEO DONATING, FRIENDS?
THAT'S RIGHT,
THEY WERE DONATING THEIR TIME.
AND WHAT WAS THE CAUSE
THAT THEY WERE DONATING FOR?
She pauses and says THAT'S RIGHT, THEY WERE
MAKING THESE BEAUTIFUL CARDS
FOR PEOPLE ALL OVER
THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA,
AND SPREADING KINDNESS.
THAT WAS A REALLY AMAZING STORY.
Victoria says YEAH, THAT WAS
VERY KIND OF THEM.
I THINK WE SHOULD TAKE
THE TIME TO MAKE A CARD
FOR SOMEONE IN OUR
COMMUNITY AS WELL.
Vickie says THAT IS A GREAT IDEA.
WE CAN DONATE OUR TIME
AND MAKE A CARD FOR SOMEONE.
Victoria says OKAY, SO THE FIRST THING WE
WANT TO DO WHEN YOU GET A CARD,
YOU MIGHT NEED SOME MATERIALS,
LIKE A PIECE OF PAPER.
Vickie says SO, MAYBE OUR FRIENDS
CAN FOLLOW ALONG AT HOME,
AND GRAB SOME PAPER,
AND SOME MARKERS.
SO, WE HAVE OUR OWN
MARKERS HERE THAT YOU CAN DRAW
AND CREATE A CARD WITH US,
AND VICTORIA,
YOU'RE GOING TO WALK US
THROUGH THAT, RIGHT?
Victoria says OF COURSE.
SO, FIRST THING YOU WANT
TO DO WITH THE CARD IS DECIDE
WHO IT'S GOING TO GO TO.
I THINK I'M GOING TO DO IT
FOR THE NEIGHBOUR NEXT DOOR.
Vickie says THAT'S A GREAT IDEA.
I THINK I WILL MAKE
A CARD FOR MY BEST FRIEND
WHO LIVES IN BRITISH COLUMBIA.
Victoria says ALRIGHT, SO THE FIRST THING YOU
WANT TO DO WHEN DESIGNING A CARD
IS FOLD IT IN HALF.
YOU WANT TO MAKE (UNCLEAR).
AND THEN YOU WANT TO
PRESS ON THE CREASE LINE.
AND THE SECOND THING
YOU WANT TO DO IS DECIDE
WHICH WAY YOU WANT TO DO IT.
YOU CAN EITHER DO IT
THIS WAY OR THIS WAY.
I THINK I'M GOING
TO DO IT LANDSCAPE.
Vickie says I THINK I'M GOING
TO DO MINE PORTRAIT.
Victoria says THE SECOND THING YOU WANT TO DO
AFTER DECIDING HOW YOUR CARD IS
GOING TO LOOK, IS DECIDING
THE MESSAGE YOU WANT TO PUT
ON THE TITLE ON THE FIRST PAGE.
THE FRONT OF THE COVER.
I THINK I'M GOING TO
WRITE "STAY POSITIVE."
BECAUSE I WANT THAT MESSAGE
TO REALLY GET THROUGH TO HER
AND REALLY MAKE HER HAPPY.
Vickie says YEAH, I THINK THAT I'M GOING TO
USE THE WORDS "KEEP SMILING."
I THINK THAT IS SOMETHING
THAT MY FRIEND WOULD LIKE.
WHEN YOU'RE WRITING YOUR CARD,
THINK OF WHO YOUR AUDIENCE IS
OR WHO YOU'RE GOING
TO BE SENDING IT TO,
AND THINK OF THINGS THEY MIGHT
LIKE TO SEE ON THE CARD.
Victoria draws a flower on the cover of her car.
She continues MAYBE THEY PLAY A SPORT,
OR MAYBE THEY LIKE
A CERTAIN SONG,
OR PERHAPS THEY LIKE
A CERTAIN TYPE OF ART,
OR A GAME.
Victoria says WHEN YOU'RE DONE
WRITING THE MESSAGE,
YOU CAN DO DESIGNS
AROUND THE CARD.
LIKE SHE SAID,
YOUR NEIGHBOUR MIGHT WANT,
LIKE, IF THEY LIKE DESIGNS,
OR WHOEVER YOU'RE WRITING IT TO
YOU KNOW SOMETHING THEY LIKE.
LIKE, MAYBE THEY, LIKE SHE SAID,
SPORTS OR MAYBE
THEY LIKE TO DRAW.
YOU COULD DO SOMETHING
THAT THEY WOULD ENJOY.
YOU CAN ALSO USE DIFFERENT
COLOURS TO MAKE SURE
THAT YOUR CARD
IS EXTRA COLOURFUL.
Vickie says IF THEY HAVE A FAVOURITE
COLOUR YOU COULD EVEN
MAYBE USE THAT COLOUR, VICTORIA.
SO, YVONNE REALLY LIKES RED,
SO I'M GOING TO USE RED.
HOW ARE YOUR CARDS
COMING AT HOME, FRIENDS?
SO FAR,
I THINK IT'S COMING ALONG.
Victoria says IT IS.
Vickie says I LOVE THAT FLOWER YOU DREW,
VICTORIA.
IT'S BEAUTIFUL.
Victoria says I DREW A FLOWER BECAUSE I KNOW
OUR NEIGHBOUR LIKES FLOWERS.
YOU COULD ALSO DRAW SHAPES,
OR A (UNCLEAR),
OR WHATEVER YOU FEEL LIKE DOING.
Vickie says SO, WHAT ARE WE
GOING TO DO ON THE INSIDE?
WHAT WOULD YOU SUGGEST?
Victoria says ONCE YOU'RE DONE THAT,
YOU'RE GOING TO
OPEN UP THE CARD,
JUST LIKE THAT.
AND THEN YOU CAN
WRITE THE MESSAGE
ON WHATEVER SIDE YOU LIKE.
WHEN YOU WRITE THE MESSAGE,
YOU WANT THE MESSAGE TO MATCH
WHAT YOU PUT ON THE COVER.
SO, IF YOU SAID KEEP SMILING,
YOU COULD SAY SOMETHING
ABOUT SMILING OR GET THEM TO
SAY, LIKE, I HOPE YOU KEEP...
MAKE SURE THE KEEP SMILING
AT THIS HARD TIME, OR SOMETHING.
UM, YOU COULD START
OFF WITH ANY WORDS,
ANY STARTER OF A SENTENCE.
YOU COULD DO "TO,"
YOU COULD DO "DEAR,"
YOU COULD DO "THANK YOU,"
OR ANYTHING THAT YOU
REALLY WANT THE MESS...
YOUR NEIGHBOUR, OR WHOEVER
YOU'RE PUTTING IT TO, TO HEAR.
Vickie says GREAT IDEAS.
I THINK, BECAUSE MY CARD IS
GOING TO MY BEST FRIEND,
I'M GOING TO WRITE HER NAME.
SO, I'M GOING TO WRITE,
"DEAR YVONNE."
NOW, WE GOTTA
REMEMBER TO CAPITALIZE
THE NAME OF OUR FRIENDS
BECAUSE THEY ARE
PROPER NOUNS, RIGHT?
Victoria says MM-HM. I'M GOING TO PUT,
"TO NEIGHBOUR."
Vickie says AWESOME, AND THEN,
MAYBE A NICE MESSAGE
THAT WILL SPREAD KINDNESS
AND MAKE THEM FEEL,
UM, CARED FOR.
SO, I'M GOING TO SAY, "THANK YOU
FOR BEING A WONDERFUL FRIEND.
HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON."
AND WHEN WE END OUR CARDS,
WHAT DO YOU THINK
WE SHOULD WRITE?
ANY IDEAS, VICTORIA?
Victoria says YOU COULD WRITE "SINCERELY."
YOU COULD SAY "TAKE CARE,"
"STAY SAFE."
ANY MESSAGE YOU FEEL IS RIGHT.
Vickie says GREAT.
AWESOME.
WELL, WE'RE GOING TO
CONTINUE TO WORK ON OUR CARDS,
AND WHILE WE'RE DOING THAT,
WE'RE GOING TO WATCH ANOTHER
VIDEO ABOUT SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN
WHO ARE DONATING THEIR
TIME IN THEIR COMMUNITY.
AS YOU WATCH,
THINK ABOUT WHAT IS THE CAUSE
THEY ARE DONATING FOR,
AND HOW THEY ARE
HELPING THE CAUSE.
ARE THEY USING THEIR TIME?
ARE THEY USING RESOURCES?
SO, LET'S WATCH.
Daniel says IT IS TIME FOR OUR
TVO K NEWS
FEATURE,
ALL ABOUT THE AMAZING
STUDENTS AT
EDENROSE PUBLIC SCHOOL
IN MISSISSAUGA.
THEY HELD A DRIVE TO COLLECT
ESSENTIAL ITEMS
FOR SOME REALLY IMPORTANT
MEMBERS OF THEIR COMMUNITY.
LET'S FIND OUT WHO.
(music plays)
A clip rolls on a screen behind him.
Kids walk in a school bus.
A girl in a yellow cardigan sweater says MY NAME IS IZZA, I WAS A
TERRIFIC TICKET WINNER,
SO I GOT TO GO TO THE
ANIMAL SHELTER.
A girl with glasses says HI, MY NAME IS ZEON,
AND I WAS PART OF THE GROUP
WHO ELECTED BLANKETS,
TOWELS, AND NEWS PAPER
FOR THE ANIMAL SHELTER.
Izza says IF YOU'RE A TERRIFIC
TICKET WINNER,
THAT MEANS YOU
DEMONSTRATED ONE OF THE
POSITIVE CHARACTER TRAITS.
FOR EXAMPLE, HONESTY, CARING,
COOPERATION, REASON,
RESPECT, AND RESPONSIBILITY.
THE TERRIFIC TICKETS
ARE IN A JAR,
AND IF YOUR NAME GETS
PICKED OUT,
YOU'LL BE ABLE TO GO
ON A FIELD TRIP
TO HELP PEOPLE IN NEED.
Daniel says INSTEAD OF PEOPLE,
THIS TIME EDENROSE PUBLIC
SCHOOL DECIDED TO HELP
SOME OF THEIR FURRY FRIENDS.
Izza says WE'RE AT THE ANIMAL SHELTER,
LET'S SEE WHICH ANIMALS
WE CAN HELP.
Linda says WELL, GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE.
Linda is in her forties, with long slightly wavy blond hair with bangs and she wears a blue uniform.
Students say GOOD MORNING.
Linda says MY NAME IS LINDA,
AND I WANT TO WELCOME YOU
HERE TO ANIMAL SERVICES.
Daniel says THE STUDENTS WERE LED
INSIDE FOR A SHORT TALK
ABOUT THE SERVICES THE ANIMAL
SHELTER PROVIDES.
THE ANIMAL SHELTER CARES
FOR OVER 3,000 LOST,
ABANDONED, OR UNWANTED
PETS EACH YEAR.
THE STUDENTS WERE ALL SUPER
EXCITED TO MEET
SOME OF THE TEMPORARY
RESIDENTS OF
MISSISSAUGA
ANIMAL SERVICES.
THEY EVEN HAD TIME TO GIVE
THEM SOME EXTRA LOVE.
Izza says I LEARNED THAT IT'S A NICE THING
TO HELP ALL THE ANIMALS
THAT ARE SICK OR INJURED.
A girl with curly red hair in pigtails says WE LEARNED TO TAKE CARE OF
ANIMALS AND HELP THEM
IF THEY'RE IN TROUBLE.
A girl with brown hair in a bob cut says THEY RESCUE LOTS OF PETS THERE.
A girl in a straw hat says THE COOLEST THING BEING AT
THE ANIMAL SHELTER IS
SEEING CATS AND DOGS,
AND ALL THE ANIMALS
THAT ARE GETTING ADOPTED.
Izza says THEY ALL NEED SOME THINGS TO
HELP THE ANIMALS TO STAY COZY,
AND FOR THEM TO EXERCISE
AND STAY HEALTHY.
The girl with glasses says WE HAD SO MUCH FUN LEARNING
ABOUT HOW TO HELP ANIMALS
IN OUR COMMUNITY.
THANK YOU, TVO KIDS,
FOR HAVIN US.
All the kids say THANK YOU MISSISSAUGA
ANIMAL SHELTER!
Daniel says WOW, AND THANK YOU,
EDENROSE PUBLIC SCHOOL,
FOR GETTING OUT IN
YOUR COMMUNITY
TO HELP ALL OUR
FURRY FRIENDS.
NOW, DO YOU HAVE A GREAT
STORY THAT YOU THINK
TVO K NEWS
NEEDS TO SHARE?
DROP US A LINE AT TVOKIDS.COM.
THAT'S ALL FOR THIS WEEK,
I'M DANIEL,
AND SEE YOU AGAIN
REALLY SOON.
Vickie says WHAT A FUN STORY THAT WAS TO
LISTEN TO AND SEE HOW SOME
FRIENDS ARE HELPING
OUR FURRY FRIENDS,
OUR PETS AT SHELTERS.
IT'S A BEAUTIFUL STORY.
SO, I THINK WE SHOULD
ADD THAT TO OUR LIST.
Victoria says YEAH, ONE-- ONE OF THE CAUSES
I'D LIKE TO SUPPORT THAT MAYBE
WE COULD ADD TO OUR LIST, TOO,
IS KIDS HELP PHONE.
A caption reads "KidsHelpPhone.ca."
Vickie says OH, THAT'S A GREAT IDEA,
VICTORIA.
KIDS HELP PHONE IS
AN AMAZING ORGANIZATION
THAT IS A 24-7 NATIONAL
ORGANIZATION HELPING CHILDREN
AND OUR YOUNG PEOPLE
JUST LIKE YOU.
YOU CAN ACCESS
THE KIDS' HELP PHONE ANY TIME,
AND YOU CAN USE YOUR PHONE,
YOUR COMPUTER, YOU CAN TEXT,
AND IT'S AVAILABLE IN
FRENCH AND ENGLISH.
The caption changes to "1-800-668-6868."
She continues YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO
PROVIDE YOUR REAL NAME.
YOU CAN KEEP IT COMPLETELY
ANONYMOUS AND CONFIDENTIAL
IF YOU WOULD LIKE NOT
TO PROVIDE YOUR NAME.
AND IT'S JUST AN AMAZING
ORGANIZATION THAT PEOPLE ACCESS
IN CANADA,
YOUNG PEOPLE, ALL THE TIME.
SO, I THINK THAT IS
AN AWESOME IDEA.
Victoria says EVERYONE AT HOME YOU CAN
CHOOSE SOMETHING ON YOUR LIST,
AND DRAW A CIRCLE AROUND IT
OR IF YOU WANT YOU COULD SPEND
SOME TIME THINKING ABOUT IT
AND DECIDE LATER.
MAYBE YOU CAN TALK TO A GROWN-UP
OR BROTHER OR SISTER,
AND MAYBE THEY CAN
HELP YOU DISCUSS IT MORE
AND CHOOSE WHAT YOU
WANT ON YOUR LIST.
Vickie says GREAT. SO, SHOULD WE CIRCLE
KIDS HELP PHONE ON OUR LIST
AS THE ORGANIZATION THAT WE'RE
GOING TO PICK TODAY TO HELP?
Victoria says I THINK WE SHOULD.
Vickie shows her list and says AWESOME. SO, WE'RE GOING TO
CIRCLE OUR ORGANIZATION,
BUT YOU CAN THINK
ABOUT YOUR ORGANIZATION
A LITTLE BIT LONGER.
AND MAYBE, LIKE VICTORIA SAID,
TALK TO SOMEONE AT HOME
AFTER THE EPISODE IS FINISHED,
AND COME UP WITH SOMETHING
THAT YOU'D LIKE TO DO.
The TVO Kids logo appears against an animated starry sky. The words "Super Citizens" appear next to a shooting star.
The announcer says IT'S TIME FOR A TVO KIDS
SUPER CITIZENS AWARD!
AND THE SUPER, TERRIFIC
AND ROCKING AWARD GOES TO...
NA'AMA!
A caption reads "Na'ama. Angelman's Syndrome."
Na'ama is around 7, with mid-length wavy red hair and she wears a printed gray T-shirt and a bow on her hair.
She says MY NAME IS NA'AMA AND
I'M RAISING MONEY TO
HELP FIND A CURE FOR
ALL THE ANGELMAN KIDS.
A caption reads "Na'ama raises money for a genetic disorder called Angelman's Syndrome which causes seizures, and makes it difficult to walk and speak."
Na'ama says I'M RAISING MONEY TO
FIND A CURE SO THAT
ALL THE ANGELMAN KIDS,
INCLUDING MY BROTHER,
WILL HAVE A CURE.
AND THEY'LL BE ABLE
TO TALK AND THEY WON'T
HAVE SEIZURES ANYMORE.
AND THAT WILL MAKE
ME VERY HAPPY.
I WAS PLAYING WITH MY
MOM AND I SAID WHY IS
NADAV SO MUCH DIFFERENT
FROM ME AND YOU, AND
SHE EXPLAINED TO
ME AND THEN...
At a lemonade stand, someone puts coins in a jar.
She says THANK YOU FOR
YOUR SUPPORT.
WE DID A LEMONADE STAND,
AND I WAS 4 AND A HALF
WHEN WE STARTED.
I HAVE THE LEMONADE STAND
AT THE BOTTOM OF MY DRIVEWAY.
The caption changes to "Na'ama runs a lemonade stand every week in the summer and once a month in the winter time."
Na'ama says SOME OF THE THINGS THAT
HAVE TO BE DONE IS
YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE
LEMONADE, PUSH THE CART,
BRING EVERYTHING OUT,
THEN I NEED TO YELL
ICE COLD LEMONADE
50 CENTS A CUP!
ALL GOES TO A CURE
FOR ANGELMAN'S SYNDROME!
JUST A LOT LOUDER.
The caption changes to "In addition to her lemonade stand, Na'ama has raised money from donations, barbecues, hot chocolate and bake sales."
Na'ama says I'VE RAISED
91,000 DOLLARS SO FAR.
[applause]
I REALLY THINK IT'S
IMPORTANT THAT ANGELMAN
KIDS SHOULD ALSO
KNOW HOW TO TALK.
I REALLY WANT TO
CURE THEM, AND I THINK
IT'S VERY IMPORTANT
TO HELP MY COMMUNITY.
IT'S IMPORTANT FOR
ME TO HELP MY BROTHER
BECAUSE I LOVE HIM,
AND I REALLY WANT HIM
TO BE CURED.
A caption reads "Na'ama. Fundraiser."
The announcer says CONGRATULATIONS!
YOU ARE A TRUE
SUPER CITIZEN!

CAME UP WITH SOME GREAT IDEAS.
BUT THE LEARNING DOESN'T
STOP HERE, RIGHT, VICTORIA?
Victoria says THAT'S RIGHT! IT DOESN'T.
TRY TO DONATE SOME
OF YOUR TIME THIS WEEK
TO HELP OUT
AN ADULT OR GROWN-UP.
MAYBE HELP PREPARE A MEAL,
OR HELP THEM WITH SOME WORK,
OR MAYBE YOUR BROTHER

WE'LL SEE YOU AGAIN ON
TVO KIDS
POWER HOUR OF LEARNING.
REMEMBER YOU ARE CHANGE MAKERS
AND YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
They wave.
A slate reads "Bonus Material."
(dog barking)
(music plays)
In the attic, Zoey crouches down in home video and dances as animated flowers pop up around her. She has two braids and wears a red dress under a denim vest.
Zoey plays the ukelele and sings
MY NAME IS ZOEY
AND THIS IS MY SHOW
I'M FINDING STUFF OUT
THAT YOU WANT TO KNOW
JUST ASK ME A QUESTION
THAT I DON'T KNOW
THAT'S WHY "FINDING STUFF OUT."
She opens a laptop and animated creatures appear.
She continues singing
IS THE NAME OF MY SHOW
SO JUST GIVE ME A SHOUT
AND WE'LL FIGURE IT OUT
WITH THE HELP
OF SOME FRIENDS
AND THE FUN NEVER ENDS
ON "FINDING STUFF OUT."
FINDING STUFF OUT
FINDING STUFF OUT
THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT
YEAH
Zoey pushes a TV screen that reads "Finding Stuff Out" in yellow letters.
In the attic, Zoey carries tools in a forklift.
Zoey says HEY, GUESS WHAT ALL
THIS STUFF'S FOR.
I'VE DECIDED TO GROW
MY OWN LUNCH
AN EGG SALAD SANDWICH
WITH TOMATOES AND LETTUCE.
OKAY, I'M NOT EXACTLY SURE WHAT
A FARMER'S SUPPOSED TO WEAR.
OR WHAT A FARMER'S
SUPPOSED TO USE.
ANYWAY... WHY AM I GROWING
MY OWN LUNCH?
TO ANSWER SARA'S QUESTION.
Zoey turns to look at the TV screen. She presses a remote control. Sara's picture appears on the screen against a black background with white question marks.
Sara says IF THERE WERE NO GROCERY
STORES, WHERE WOULD WE GET FOOD?
An animated yellow question mark crosses the screen holding a flag.
Zoey says GOOD QUESTION.
THAT MAKES ME WONDER:
WHERE DOES THE FOOD COME FROM
IN THE FIRST PLACE?
LIKE, WHERE WOULD I GET
SPAGHETTI FROM?
A NOODLE TREE?
THAT DOESN'T SOUND RIGHT.
BUT EVERYTHING YOU GET
FROM THE GROCERY STORES
INCLUDING JUNK FOOD, LIKE
CHIPS, DONUTS, OR HOT DOGS -
HAVE TO BE MADE FROM STUFF THAT
WAS GROWN BY A FARMER SOMEWHERE.
An animation shows hot dogs and donuts growing in a plant. Zoey watches the animated clip on a TV screen and laughs.
Back at the attic, Zoey says WHAT WOULD WE DO IF WE COULDN'T
GET FOOD FROM GROCERY STORES?
WOULD WE GROW IT OURSELVES?
I'M GONNA GIVE IT A TRY.
AND BY THE END OF THE SHOW,
I'LL HAVE THE ANSWER
TO SARA'S QUESTION.
BUT FIRST,
BRENNA HAS A QUESTION
THAT TAKES US RIGHT BACK
TO THE BEGINNING OF IT ALL.
Brenna says WHO INVENTED FOOD?
A kid plays with a cave doll and a monkey toy.
Cave doll says OH!
BERRIES LOOK DELICIOUS.
BUT ME NOT KNOW
IF THEY ARE POISON. OH!
ME HAVE IDEA.
WATCH ANIMALS AND SEE
WHICH BERRIES THEY EAT.
(monkey noises)
OH! MONKEY IS EATING BERRIES.
(chewing)
HE SEEMS OKAY.
NOW ME EAT BERRIES.
(chewing)
YUMMY! BERRIES NOT POISONOUS.
BUT ME EAT TOO MANY.
TUMMY ACHE!
Zoey watches the clip on her laptop and laughs.
Zoey says ANCIENT HUMANS MAY HAVE
FIGURED OUT WHAT FOODS
WERE SAFE TO EAT BY WATCHING
ANIMALS AND COPYING THEM.
BUT IT WASN'T ALWAYS
THE BEST IDEA,
BECAUSE SOME ANIMALS EAT THINGS
THAT CAN MAKE PEOPLE SICK.
THEN, ABOUT 8,500 YEARS AGO
SOMEONE HAD A CRAZY IDEA
TO COLLECT SEEDS,
AND TO PLANT THEM IN THE GROUND
TO SEE IF THEY WOULD GROW.
AND THEY DID.
She starts to draw and her drawings come to live. A female pheasant plants seeds.
The female pheasant says WOOHOO!
Zoey says I FOUND OUT IT WAS
THE VERY BEGINNING OF FARMING.
AND IT CHANGED EVERYTHING,
BECAUSE PEOPLE DIDN'T HAVE TO
WANDER AROUND LOOKING FOR FOOD.
THEY COULD START VILLAGES.
AS PEOPLE DISCOVERED
HOW TO GROW NEW FOODS,
THEY STARTED TO TRADE
WITH OTHER VILLAGES.
SOON, EVERYONE HAD A LOT OF
DIFFERENT KINDS OF FOODS TO EAT.
NOW, FOR MY EGG SALAD SANDWICH,
I'LL DEFINITELY NEED SOME EGGS.
I JUST HAVE TO FIND
SOME CHICKENS.
BUT FIRST, HERE'S A GREAT
CHICKEN QUESTION FROM VANESSA.
Vanessa says WHY DO CHICKENS LAY
DIFFERENT COLORED EGGS?
BECAUSE I'VE SEEN
BROWN EGGS AND WHITE EGGS.
Zoey says THAT'S A TOUGH EGG
TO CRACK, VANESSA.
BUT I HAVE SOME EXPERTS
WHO CAN ANSWER YOUR QUESTION.
PLEASE WELCOME
CHICKEN FARMERS
KATE BELBECK
AND HER SON, FLETCHER.
Zoey welcomes them strumming her ukulele.
Kate holds a chicken. She wears a blue T-shirt and has short hair.
Kate says HEY, ZOEY.
I HEARD YOU NEEDED SOME
EGG LAYERS FOR YOUR SANDWICH.
Zoey says YOU BROUGHT CHICKENS?
HI, CHICKENS.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE CHICKEN
AROUND ME.
THIS IS SO EGG-CITING.
GET IT? EGG-CITING?
(chicken clucks)
SO, DO YOU OFTEN LEND
CHICKENS TO PEOPLE?
Kate says WE DO. WE ACTUALLY
RENT CHICKENS TO PEOPLE
WHO WANT TO HAVE THEIR OWN
FRESHLY LAID EGGS ALL SUMMER.
Zoey says THIS IS AWESOME.
CAN I NAME THEM?
Fletcher is 12 years old. He has short blond hair. He wears a blue T-shirt.
Fletcher says YES, IT'S OKAY
FOR YOU TO NAME THEM.
WE LET EVERYONE NAME THEM.
Zoey says OH BOY! I'LL NAME
THAT ONE MOLLY,
THAT ONE
PRINCESS PUMPERNICKEL,
THAT ONE PIPSQUEAK,
AND THAT ONE CLUCKY.
SO, WHY DO CHICKENS LAY
DIFFERENT COLORED EGGS?
Kate says IN THE BEGINNING, ALL EGGS
ARE WHITE INSIDE THE CHICKEN.
DIFFERENT BREEDS WILL LAY DOWN
A DIFFERENT COLOR OR PIGMENT,
IN THE LAST FEW HOURS
BEFORE THEY'RE LAID.
Fletcher says THESE THREE CHICKENS HERE
LAY BROWN EGGS.
AND THE CHICKEN OVER THERE,
SHE WILL LAY BLUE EGGS.
BUT IF YOU GET A CROSS BETWEEN
THE BROWN EGG LAYERS
AND THE BLUE EGG LAYERS, YOU CAN
GET A GREEN EGG FROM THEM.
Zoey says GREEN EGGS! IS THAT
WHERE GREEN EGGS AND HAM COME
FROM?
SO ARE BLUE EGGS BLUE INSIDE?
Kate laughs and says ACTUALLY, NO.
THEY'RE ALL THE SAME
INSIDE THE SHELL.
Zoey says SO WHAT DO THEY EAT?
Kate says WELL, THEY ACTUALLY EAT
THIS GRAIN FOOD THAT'S JUST A
MIX OF GRAINS ALL CRUMBLED UP.
Zoey says SO, HOW DO YOU FEED
THEM?
Fletcher says YOU JUST GET
A BIT OF FOOD,
AND YOU CAN SPRINKLE IT
ON THE GROUND.
AND THEY'LL EVENTUALLY EAT IT.
Zoey says HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE
FOR THEM TO LAY EGGS?
A COUPLE OF WEEKS?
Fletcher says NO. NOT EVEN CLOSE.
THEY'LL ALL LAY ONE EGG A DAY,
STARTING RIGHT AWAY.
Zoey says THAT MEANS I'M GOING
TO HAVE FOUR EGGS TODAY!
Kate says I HOPE YOU LIKE OMELETS.
Zoey says FOUR EGGS A DAY?
She uses her cell phone calculator and says THAT'S... 28 EGGS A WEEK!
AND THEN I'LL HAVE...
112 EGGS A MONTH!
AND THEN I'LL HAVE...
1,344 EGGS A YEAR!
THAT MEANS I'LL HAVE
672 EGG SALAD SANDWICHES.
She screams AGH! SO MANY SANDWICHES!
AGH!
(chicken clucks)
In an animation, Zoey's head explodes. Bright light orange letters read "You're gonna make my head explode."
She screams YOU'RE GONNA MAKE
MY HEAD EXPLODE!
Zoey sighs and says I'M GONNA HAVE TO GET CRACKING.
A chicken says I'M GONNA HAVE
TO GET LAYING.
Zoey says THANKS FOR LENDING ME
YOUR CHICKENS, GUYS.
I'LL TAKE EGG-CELLENT
CARE OF THEM.
Kate says NO PROBLEM, ZOEY.
WE KNOW YOU'LL BE AN EGG-
CEPTIONAL CHICKEN HANDLER.
Zoey laughs.
Then, at the crack of dawn, Zoey says CLUCKY, PUMPERNICKEL,
SUCH BEAUTIES.
She types in a laptop and a clip shows children's faces in different windows. A slate reads "Ask a Friend."
Zoey says HEY, GUYS.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE FOODS
THAT ARE MADE WITH EGGS?
Girl 1 says EGGS WITH TOAST.
Boy 1 says HARD-BOILED EGGS.
Boy 2 says AN EGG SANDWICH.
Girl 2 says EGG SALAD AND TUNA
SANDWICH.
Girl 3 says CAKE.
Girl 4 says OMELETS, BECAUSE
IT TASTES REALLY GOOD.
Boy 3 says PANCAKES.
Girl 5 says I LIKE AN OVER-EASY
WITH SOME BACON ON THE SIDE.
Boy 4 says EGG SANDWICH AND EGG SALAD.
Boy 5 says EGG SANDWICH BUT WITH,
LIKE, KETCHUP AND BROCCOLI.
Zoey says HMMM... I'LL TRY THAT.
NOW, WHAT ELSE DO I NEED
FOR MY SANDWICH, BESIDES EGGS?
OH, YEAH, BREAD.
I ACTUALLY GOT
A QUESTION ABOUT BREAD.
Zoey types in her laptop and Auxance's picture appears.
Auxance says WHERE DOES BREAD COME FROM?
Zoey says THAT GIVES ME
A GREAT IDEA FOR...
(trumpet fanfare)
In an animation, Zoey spins the world on one finger. Bright light orange letters read "My Great Challenge."
Zoey says TODAY WE'RE PLAYING...
Blue and red letters read "What0s that food made from?"
Zoey says MELISSA, CHIARA,
YOU'RE TEAM MUNCH.
Team Munch says YAY!
Zoey says DANIELLE, ANDREAS,
YOU'RE TEAM CRUNCH.
Andreas has short blond hair and wears a red shirt. Danielle has brown hair. He wears glasses and an orange polo-shirt.
Team Crunch says YEAH!
Zoey says EACH TEAM WILL HAVE
TO MATCH UP
EACH OF THE FAMILIAR FOODS
OVER HERE ON THE TABLES
WITH THE PLANT OR ANIMAL
THAT THEY'RE MADE FROM.
OVER THERE.
LET'S PULL NOODLES
TO SEE WHO GOES FIRST.
OKAY, MUNCH, YOU GUYS ARE
GOING FIRST. GET MATCHING.
Chiara has curly black hair. She wears a white shirt.
Chiara says SO DO WE TAKE
THE CHOCOLATE FIRST?
WHERE DOES IT GO?
HERE?
Melissa has straight long blond hair. She wears a pink T-shirt.
Melissa says THOSE SORT OF LOOK
LIKE COCOA BEANS.
Chiara says YEAH. I THINK.
HERE.
A panel of pictures showing plants sits in the middle of a colourful table. Melissa places a bowl in front of a picture of cocoa beans. An animated green tick appears on screen.
Zoey says THAT'S RIGHT. CHOCOLATE
IS MADE BY ROASTING THE BEANS
FROM INSIDE THIS WEIRD
LOOKING COCOA PLANT POD.
TEAM CRUNCH, GO.
TEAM CRUNCH SELECTED
THE POPCORN.
AND THEY'RE MATCHING IT WITH
CORN, AND THEY'RE RIGHT.
HEAT UP DRIED CORN KERNELS,
AND THEY BECOME POPCORN.
Chiara says THIS SHOULD GO...
Zoey says THE CINNAMON STICKS!
Melissa says I THINK IT GOES THERE.
Zoey says THEY'RE MATCHING THE CINNAMON
STICKS WITH THE SUGAR CANE.
AND THAT'S NOT RIGHT.
An animated red cross appears on one of the panel pictures.
Danielle says THE LOLLIPOP...
Zoey says TEAM CRUNCH IS MATCHING THE
LOLLIPOP WITH THE SUGAR CANE.
THAT'S RIGHT. LOLLIPOPS
ARE MOSTLY MADE OF SUGAR,
WHICH IS MADE BY BOILING THIS
TALL GRASS CALLED SUGAR CANE.
Chiara says BREAD MAYBE?
Melissa says OKAY.
Chiara says YEAH, IT GOES HERE.
Danielle says PEANUT BUTTER SHOULD GO...
Zoey says THAT'S RIGHT. PEANUT
BUTTER'S MADE WITH PEANUTS,
WHICH GROW UNDERGROUND, ON
THE ROOTS OF THE PEANUT PLANT.
Chiara says THE CHEESE.
I'M SURE IT GOES WITH THE COW.
Zoey says THAT WAS AN EASY ONE.
Andreas says CHEESE.
Zoey says REAL EASY.
Chiara says I THINK THE MAPLE
SYRUP IS FROM A TREE.
Melissa says THAT ONE OR THAT ONE?
Chiara says MAYBE IT'S WRONG.
MAYBE IT'S RIGHT.
Zoey says IT'S RIGHT.
MAPLE SYRUP IS MADE WITH
THE SAP OF THE MAPLE TREE,
WHICH GETS BOILED DOWN
TO BECOME THICK AND SUGARY.
TEAM CRUNCH IS PUTTING
THEIR CHOCOLATE
IN FRONT OF THE CINNAMON TREE.
NOPE!
Melissa says A LOLLIPOP.
Chiara says PUT IT THERE.
Zoey says AND TEAM MUNCH ALSO GETS
THE CINNAMON TREE WRONG.
AUXANCE, HERE'S THE ANSWER
TO YOUR QUESTION.
Auxance says WHERE DOES BREAD COME FROM?
Zoey says BOTH TEAMS PUT THE BREAD
IN FRONT OF THE WHEAT.
AND THEY'RE RIGHT.
WHEAT SEEDS ARE GROUND UP
TO MAKE FLOUR, WHICH IS
THE MAIN INGREDIENT IN BREAD.
Chiara says SO... UM...
MAYBE THE OCEAN IS SALTY?
Chiara says OKAY. PUT IT THERE.
Melissa places a salt shaker on the table.
Melissa says I THINK IT'S WRONG.
Zoey says ACTUALLY, THAT'S RIGHT. MOST
SALT COMES FROM OCEAN WATER.
Andreas says SEA SALT.
Melissa says PEANUT BUTTER.
Chiara says WHERE DOES THAT GO?
Melissa says IT HAS PEANUTS! YEAH.
Andreas says CINNAMON STICKS ARE...
OH, NO.
Danielle says WE SHOULD'VE SWITCHED...
Zoey says THAT'S RIGHT,
BECAUSE CINNAMON
IS MADE FROM THE BARK
OF THE CINNAMON TREE.
Andreas says LET'S PUT IT HERE.
Chiara says MMMM... FRENCH FRIES.
Melissa says WITH THE POTATOES.
Zoey says THAT'S ANOTHER EASY ONE.
Andreas says FRENCH FRIES.
Melissa says POPCORN.
WITH CORN, BECAUSE IT'S...
Melissa says LIKE POPCORN.
THAT'S THE LAST THING.
MAPLE SYRUP. IT COMES FROM
A TREE, SO IT MAKES SENSE.
The teams' scores are tied.
Zoey says OKAY,
YOU GUYS ARE DONE.
TEAM MUNCH, YOU HAVE EIGHT
MATCHES OUT OF TEN.
Team Munch says YEAH!
Zoey says AND TEAM CRUNCH, YOU ALSO HAVE
EIGHT MATCHES OUT OF TEN.
Team Crunch says WOO!
Zoey says SO, IT'S A TIE.
THANKS FOR PLAYING...
WHAT'S THAT FOO MADE FROM?
NOW, LET'S NOT ALL LET THIS
GO TO WASTE. COME ON!
They all run to the table.
Melissa says I WANT THE POPCORN!
Danielle says I WANT THE
CHOCOLATE! CHOCOLATE!
Andreas says I WANT THE POP.
(music plays)
Zoey sings and dances against an animated background with all kinds of food.
Zoey sings TAKE A GOOD LOOK
AT THAT SANDWICH
OR AT THAT BUBBLE GUM
DO YOU WONDER
WHAT THEY'RE MADE OF?
WHERE DID THEY COME FROM?
WE CAN'T HAVE BREAD
WITHOUT GROUND UP WHEAT
GUM USED TO BE MADE
WITH RUBBER FROM THIS TREE
SUCH A CHEWY TREAT
SEE THOSE FISH STICKS
ON YOUR PLATE
THEY'RE MADE FROM HADDOCK,
SOLE OR COD
THAT CANDY FLOSS IS MADE
WITH YAK HAIR
ALL BALLED UP
INTO A WAD
WHAT? IT'S MADE OF SUGAR? OH!
WELL, IF YOU'RE
EVER FEEDING
AND WONDERING
WHAT YOU'RE EATING
COME SING THIS SONG
WITH ME
Maegan says HOW WAS KETCHUP INVENTED?
At the attic, Zoey says WHO DOESN'T LOVE
KETCHUP?
SO I CHECKED, AND IT'S MADE
WITH SQUISHED TOMATOES,
SUGAR, VINEGAR,
AND IT GOES WITH EVERYTHING.
BUT THE FIRST KETCHUP INVENTED
DIDN'T TASTE ANYTHING
LIKE THIS STUFF.
I FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS MADE
FROM MUSHROOMS, WALNUTS,
OYSTERS, OR LITTLE FISH
CALLED ANCHOVIES. YUMMY.
LUCKILY, A SCIENTIST NAMED
JAMES MEASE INTRODUCED TOMATOES
IN HIS NEW KETCHUP RECIPE,
AND THE REST IS HISTORY.
WE MAKE TONS OF GOOD SAUCES
OUT OF TOMATOES.
BUT THEY DIDN'T ALWAYS HAVE
SUCH A GOOD REPUTATION.
Two animated pirates sing YAR, HAR, HAR!
(GASPING) ARGH!
The sea ends and their boat falls.
Bright light orange letters read "The Flat Earth Corner."
Wearing an old grocer custom, Zoey holds an tomato and says BEHOLD!
THE DEADLY AND HORRIBLE TOMATO!
SAVE YOURSELF
AND YOUR CHILDREN
FROM THIS STINKY,
POISONOUS DEVIL FRUIT.
IT WAS BROUGHT TO EUROPE
BY FOOLISH TRAVELERS.
WHATEVER YOU DO,
DON'T EAT THEM,
OR YOU WILL DIE
A HORRIBLE DEATH.
INSTEAD, TRY A SAFE
AND HEALTHY FRUIT,
LIKE THIS APPLE.
AGH! IT WAS A TOMATO!
AGH! THE END IS NEAR.
AGH!
At the attic, Zoey says FOR OVER 200 HUNDRED
YEARS PEOPLE IN EUROPE
WERE AFRAID OF TOMATOES?
THAT WAS THANKS TO
A BRITISH BARBER, SURGEON,
AND SCIENTIST NAMED JOHN GIRARD.
HE DESCRIBED TOMATOES AS
STINKING AND BEING POISONOUS.
AND EVERYONE BELIEVED HIM.
THIS MYTH BEGAN BECAUSE
PEOPLE ATE TOMATOES
ON PLATES MADE OF A METAL CALLED
PEWTER AND GOT REALLY SICK.
BUT IT WASN'T
THE TOMATOES' FAULT.
THERE WAS A POISONOUS CHEMICAL
IN THE PEWTER CALLED LEAD
THAT SEEPED INTO THE TOMATOES.
IT'S TOO BAD FOR SO LONG
EUROPEANS WERE MISSING OUT.
IMAGINE SPAGHETTI AND MEATBALLS
WITHOUT THE TOMATO SAUCE.
IT'S JUST NOT THE SAME.
In an animation, Zoey turns into a giant robot walking in the street. Bright light orange letters read "Do try this at home."
Talking to chickens, Zoey says YOU GUYS ARE THE MESSIEST
ROOMMATES EVER.
LOOK AT THIS PLACE.
YOU KNOW, IF WE LIVED IN A WORLD
WITHOUT GROCERY STORES,
YOU MIGHT THINK YOU COULD GET
YOUR FOOD DIRECTLY FROM FARMERS.
WELL, IT MIGHT
NOT BE THAT EASY.
BECAUSE A WHOLE LOT OF THE FOOD
THAT WE GET FROM GROCERY STORES,
COMES FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD.
SO THE NEXT TIME YOU'RE AT THE
STORE, LOOK CLOSE AT THE LABEL,
AND IT WILL SHOW YOU WHERE
IN THE WORLD IT COMES FROM.
SEE, THIS PEAR SAYS IT'S FROM SOUTH AFRICA.
THAT'S WAY DOWN HERE!
THIS GARLIC COMES FROM CHINA.
AND THESE GRAPES WERE
GROWN IN MEXICO.
CHECK OUT YOUR FRUITS
AND VEGETABLES AT HOME.
SEE WHICH ONES ARE GROWN
CLOSE TO WHERE YOU LIVE.
Animated fruits appear.
A pear says HEHE!
Grapes say WOOHOO!
A banana says HEEHEE!
An orange says HUH?
YA'LL AIN'T FROM AROUND HERE,
ARE YA?
Zoey says NOW HERE'S
A QUESTION FROM ALYSSA.
Alyssa says CAN YOU GROW FOOD
IN THE CITY?
Zoey says TO ANSWER
ALYSSA'S QUESTION,
I'M MEETING NICHOLAS TAYLOR,
A PLANT SCIENCE MANAGER
WHO WORKS AT A FARM.
Zoey stands in front of a big building.
She says UH... WHERE'S THE FARM?
THESE ARE JUST BIG OLD
FACTORY BUILDINGS.
Nicholas says HEY, ZOEY!
I'M UP HERE.
Zoey says OH, THERE YOU ARE.
HI, NICHOLAS.
Nicholas stands in a glass greenhouse on top of a building. He is in his early thirties, clean-shaven with brown hair. He wears a blue T-shirt.
Nicholas says HEY,
WELCOME TO LUFA FARMS,
THE WORLD'S FIRST COMMERCIAL
ROOFTOP GREENHOUSE.
Zoey says WOAH! YOU REALLY CAN
GROW FOOD IN THE CITY.
BUT WHAT IS YOUR FARM
DOING ON THE ROOF?
Nicholas says GOOD QUESTION.
WHAT HAPPENS IS,
MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE
FILLING UP ALL THE SPACES
AROUND THE CITIES,
AND WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF LAND.
WHAT WE DID WAS,
RATHER THAN HAVE A FARM
OUTSIDE THE CITY FAR AWAY, WHERE
WE'D HAVE TO BRING FOOD IN,
WE BROUGHT THE FARM
RIGHT INTO THE CITY.
NOW, BECAUSE THERE'S SO MANY
BUILDINGS, THEY DECIDED
TO USE AREAS THAT WERE NOT
BEING USED BY THE PEOPLE,
WHICH IS ON TOP OF THE ROOFS.
WHAT'S COOL ABOUT BEING ON TOP
OF A ROOF IS THAT YOU CAPTURE
ALL OF THAT SUN THAT WOULD
NORMALLY BE HITTING THE ROOF,
BUT NOW IT'S HITTING THE
CUCUMBERS AND HELPING THEM GROW.
HERE'S ONE OF OUR LEBANESE
CUCUMBERS. WANT TO TRY IT?
Zoey says YOU MEAN PICK IT OFF THE TREE?
Nicholas says YEAH. GO FOR IT.
Zoey says WITHOUT WASHING IT?
Nicholas says YOU DON'T HAVE TO.
WE DON'T USE ANY SYNTHETIC
PESTICIDES HERE.
Zoey says OH! NO POISONOUS CHEMICALS
TO KILL THE BUGS? COOL.
She tastes a cucumber and says MMM... THAT'S REALLY GOOD.
Nicholas says WHEN YOU GROW
VEGGIES REALLY CLOSE
TO WHERE THE PEOPLE
ARE PICKING IT UP,
YOU CAN PICK IT
AS FRESH AS POSSIBLE,
SO IT'S SUPER-GOOD
AND PACKED WITH NUTRIENTS.
Zoey says SO WHEN FOOD HAS TO
TRAVEL A LONG TIME TO GET HERE,
IT LOSES ITS FLAVOR.
Nicholas says ABSOLUTELY.
Zoey says AND NICHOLAS TELLS ME
THAT, WHEN FOOD TRAVELS FAR
TO GET TO US, A LOT OF IT
SPOILS AND IS WASTED.
AND ALSO THAT TRANSPORTING IT
MEANS BURNING A LOT OF FUEL.
THAT CAUSES POLLUTION.
HEY, CAN I HELP YOU
PLANT SOMETHING?
Nicholas says WANNA PLANT SOME LETTUCE?
Zoey says SURE.
Nicholas says ALL RIGHT.
LET'S DO IT!
SO WE'RE GOING TO BE PLANTING
SOME BUTTERHEAD LETTUCE.
THEY'RE PROBABLY GETTING
A LITTLE ANGRY,
SITTING IN THIS TRAY.
BECAUSE WE PROBABLY SHOULD'VE
PLANTED THEM A COUPLE DAYS AGO.
SO WHAT'S COOL ABOUT THIS SYSTEM
IS THAT WE CAN GROW
A LOT OF LETTUCE REALLY CLOSE
TOGETHER, SUPER-EFFICIENTLY.
Zoey says LOOK, A LITTLE BUG.
THAT REMINDS ME OF A QUESTION
THAT I GOT FROM AMBER.
Amber says IS BUG POISON ON PLANTS
BAD FOR PEOPLE?
Nicholas says IN FARMS, PEOPLE
CAN USE A LOT OF BUG POISON
IN THE FORM OF PESTICIDES.
AND IT HAS BEEN SHOWN TO BE
KIND OF ROUGH FOR PEOPLE,
WHICH IS WHY
MOST PEOPLE SUGGEST
THAT YOU ALWAYS WASH
YOUR FRUITS AND VEGGIES.
BUT WE DON'T USE
ANY SYNTHETIC PESTICIDES HERE.
SO WE FIGHT BUGS WITH BUGS.
RIGHT HERE IN FRONT OF US,
WE HAVE A LOT OF BAD GUY BUGS
CALLED APHIDS.
THEY'RE EATING OUR PEPPERS.
ONE APHID, IN ABOUT ONE DAY,
CAN MAKE TEN MORE APHIDS.
AND THOSE TEN MAKE TEN.
AND THOSE TEN MAKE ANOTHER TEN.
Zoey laughs.
Nicholas continues AND THEN THE PLANT IS JUST
COMPLETELY COVERED.
SO WHAT WE USE TO FIGHT
THESE BUGS IS MORE BUGS.
Zoey says WHAT?
Nicholas opens a bag. Zoey looks inside of it.
Nicholas says IN THIS CASE...
Zoey says WOAH! LADYBUGS!
Nicholas says LADYBUGS.
THAT'S RIGHT.
BUT THESE GUYS,
THEY'RE NOT GONNA HARM US.
THEY'RE NOT INTERESTED
IN ME AT ALL.
Zoey laughs.
Nicholas continues IF ANYTHING, THEY'RE PROBABLY
CONFUSED ABOUT MY ARM HAIR.
Zoey says WOAH!
Zoey laughs.
Nicholas says SO THEY'RE GONNA CRAWL AROUND,
AND THEY'RE GONNA LOOK
FOR THESE APHIDS
ON THESE LEAVES.
Zoey says IT TICKLES.
Zoey laughs.
Nicholas says LADYBUG HIGH FIVE.
ARE YOU READY?
Zoey says NO, I'M GOOD. NO,
YOU'RE GONNA SQUISH THEM!
Nicholas laughs.
Nicholas says SO ALL THESE GUYS
ARE GONNA HANG OUT HERE,
BECAUSE THIS IS THE BEST
PLACE IN TOWN FOR LADYBUGS.
Zoey says YEAH, BECAUSE THEY EAT
THE APHIDS.
IT'S EATING ONE NOW!
Nicholas says THAT'S RIGHT.
BUT THEY DON'T JUST EAT APHIDS.
THEY EAT ALL SORTS
OF OTHER LITTLE PESTS.
THEY'RE KINDA LIKE THE BIG BOSS
COMPARED TO ALL THE OTHER BUGS.
Zoey says THAT'S CRAZY.
Nicholas says YEAH.
Zoey says THEY'RE SO SMALL.
Nicholas says THEY DON'T HAVE A TOUGH NAME,
BUT THEY'RE ONE OF
THE TOUGHEST SPECIES WE HAVE.
HERE, YOU WANNA PUT THAT OUT?
Zoey says SURE.
Zoey hangs a small cardboard box with ladybugs in a plant.
Nicholas says THAT'S IT.
PERFECT.
Zoey says GOOD JOB,
LITTLE LADYBUG.
Nicholas says THIS IS A SWEET
PEPPER. WANNA PICK IT?
Zoey says SURE.
Zoey laughs.
Nicholas says THERE YOU GO.
VEGETABLES YOU CAN EAT
THE SAME DAY THEY WERE PICKED.
Zoey says FROM A FARM
IN THE CITY.
ON A ROOFTOP.
THANKS, NICHOLAS.
A chicken clucks.
Back at the attic, Zoey says THIS IS SO EXCITING.
I HAVE FRESH VEGETABLES NOW.
AND WITH THE EGGS
FROM THE CHICKEN,
MY LUNCH IS REALLY STARTING
TO COME TOGETHER.
BUT YOU DON'T HAVE
TO GET SOMEONE ELSE
TO GROW YOUR VEGGIES.
YOU CAN GROW THEM YOURSELF
BY PLANTING SEEDS
IN YOUR BACKYARD GARDEN
OR IN WINDOW BOXES.
YOU CAN EVEN GROW NEW VEGGIES
FROM OLD LEFTOVERS.
MY FRIENDS TRIED IT OUT.
In an animation, Zoey holds a purple balloon that reads "The Experiment."
Zoey says ANDELAINE AND VIVIAN FOUND OUT
THAT YOU CAN GROW
FRESH VEGETABLES FROM
KITCHEN SCRAPS LIKE THESE.
Andelaine and Vivian stand in a kitchen. Vivian has long light brown hair and wears a green T-shirt. Andelaine ha short light brown hair and wears a dress.
Vivian says WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
Andelaine says I'M GONNA TRY AND PUT THIS
PIECE OF CELERY IN WATER
AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
Zoey says YOU TAKE THE BOTTOM PART
FROM A CELERY BUNCH
AND SIT IT IN SOME WARM WATER
IN THE SUN.
Vivian says LET'S WAIT A COUPLE
OF WEEKS AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
Andelaine says OKAY.
Zoey says IT GROWS NEW LEAVES.
TAKE THE SPROUTING CELERY
AND PLANT IT IN SOME EARTH.
TRY TAKING THE SEEDS FROM
INSIDE A PEPPER PLANT.
PLANT THEM IN SOIL,
AND GIVE THEM
A LITTLE BIT OF WATER.
PUT YOUR POTS IN THE SUN,
AND WAIT FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS.
LOOK IT UP. YOU CAN DO THIS
WITH MANY KINDS OF VEGGIES.
The girls place the plants they grew from vegetables on a table.
Vivien says I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS WORKED.
Andelaine says I KNOW!
Zoey says SO THERE YOU GO.
PLANT YOUR TABLE SCRAPS AND
HAVE YOUR OWN INDOOR MINI-FARM.
NOW THAT'S LOCAL PRODUCE.
The girls say BYE, ZOEY!
Zoey says BYE, BYE.
The veggies say BYE! BYE! BYE! BYE!
Zoey laughs.
Zoey says THESE VEGGIES HAVE HAD
SOME TIME TO GROW.
AND LOOK AT THEM NOW.
LOOKS LIKE I CAN ADD
SOME CELERY TO MY EGG SALAD.
THAT MEANS I HAVE EVERYTHING
I NEED TO MAKE A SANDWICH.
AND I CAN FINALLY
ANSWER THE QUESTION
THAT STARTED OFF THE SHOW.
Sara says IF THERE WERE NO GROCERY
STORES, WHERE WOULD WE GET FOOD?
(piano fanfare)
Zoey plays keyboards as bright orange letters appear next to her. They read "The Big Answer Is."
Zoey says WE CAN GROW IT OURSELVES
OR BUY IT FROM LOCAL FARMERS.
IN FACT, IT LOOKS LIKE
WE'LL BE DOING THIS MORE
AND MORE IN THE FUTURE.
GROWING FOOD CLOSE TO HOME CAN
HELP AVOID SOME BIG PROBLEMS,
LIKE WASTE, POISONOUS
PESTICIDES, AND AIR POLLUTION.
PLUS, THE FOOD IS HEALTHIER
AND TASTES WAY BETTER.
THAT ROOFTOP FARM
I VISITED
IS JUST ONE AMAZING WAY
TO GROW FOOD IN THE CITY.
THERE ARE KIDS PLANTING GARDENS
IN THEIR SCHOOLYARDS,
AND COMMUNITY FOOD GARDENS ARE
POPPING UP ALL OVER THE PLACE.
PEOPLE HAVE EVEN TURNED
SWIMMING POOLS INTO FISH FARMS.
IT'S AMAZING WHAT YOU CAN GROW
IF YOU GET CREATIVE.
Fast clips show what Zoey tells.
Zoey says NOW, ALL I HAVE TO DO
IS MAKE MY SANDWICH.
WELL, I FORGOT TO GROW WHEAT
TO MAKE BREAD.
GOOD THING MY MOM PICKED UP
A LOAF OF BREAD
FROM THE LOCAL
FARMER'S MARKET.
THAT STILL KINDA COUNTS,
RIGHT?
(music plays)
Zoey makes herself a sandwich.
Zoey says THIS IS THE BEST HOMEGROWN
SANDWICH I'VE EVER EATEN!
PRINCESS PUMPERNICKEL...
(chicken clucks)
CLUCKY...
YOUR EGGS ARE DELICIOUS.
GREAT JOB, GUYS.
A chicken says THANKS, ZOEY.
A caption reads "Thanks to everyone who helped me out, Zoey Siewert."
As the end credits roll, Zoey sings
SEE THOSE FISH STICKS
ON YOUR PLATE?
THEY'RE MADE FROM HADDOCK,
SOLE OR COD
THAT CANDY FLOSS IS MADE
WITH YAK HAIR
ALL BALLED UP
INTO A WAD
WHAT? IT'S MADE OF SUGAR? OH!
WELL, IF YOU'RE
EVER FEEDING
AND WONDERING
WHAT YOU'RE EATING
COME SING THIS SONG
WITH ME
Produced in association with TVO Kids.

A final slate reads "TVO Kids would like to thank all the teachers involved in the Power Hour of Learning as they continue to teach the children of Ontario from their homes."
The caption changes to "Copyright 2021. The Ontario Educational Communications Authority."
An animated title against a sunny sky reads "TVOKids Power Hour of Learning."
In off, Laura says WELCOME TO
TVOKIDS POWER HOUR
OF LEARNING.
TODAY'S JUNIOR LESSON: DONATING.
A caption reads "Junior 4-6, Teacher Vickie." Vickie is in her late thirties, with curly black hair. She wears a pink sweater, earrings and a long silver necklace.
Vickie says HI, FRIENDS, AND WELCOME!
I'M TEACHER VICKIE
AND I'M SO GLAD THAT YOU COULD
JOIN US HERE TODAY.
TODAY WE ARE
GOING TO BE LEARNING
ALL ABOUT THE WORD "DONATIONS."
BUT BEFORE WE GET STARTED,
LET'S MAKE SURE THAT
WE ARE FOCUSED AND RELAXED
AND READY TO LEARN.
SO, WE'RE GOING TO TRY
SOMETHING THAT I USE WITH
MY STUDENTS CALLED
BOXED BREATHING.
YOU'RE GOING TO INHALE FOR FOUR,
YOU'RE GOING TO
HOLD IT FOR FOUR,
EXHALE FOR FOUR,
AND HOLD FOR FOUR.
SO, IT'S GOING TO
LOOK LIKE THIS.
She inhales and exhales counting with her fingers.
She says ARE YOU READY TO TRY IT WITH ME?
HERE WE GO. INHALE FOR FOUR.
GREAT JOB.
I'M FEELING MORE RELAXED
AND I'M READY TO BE
FOCUSED AND LEARN.
BUT I HAVE A QUESTION TO ASK
YOU BEFORE WE GET STARTED.
DO YOU THINK THAT YOU
CAN CHANGE THE WORLD?
IF YOU SAID, YES,
YOU ARE RIGHT!
YES, I BELIEVE THAT
YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD,
AND I'M SURE SOME
OF YOU ALREADY ARE.
TODAY, WE ARE GOING TO SEE
AND HEAR SOME EXAMPLES
OF PEOPLE JUST LIKE YOU
WHO ARE MAKING GREAT CHANGES
AND DOING AMAZING
THINGS IN THEIR SCHOOLS,
AND HOMES, AND COMMUNITIES.
BUT TO HELP US LEARN,
I'D LIKE TO
INTRODUCE AN ASSISTANT.
TODAY, ASSISTING US WILL
BE MY DAUGHTER VICTORIA!
Victoria is in her early teens, with short blond hair. She wears a green shirt and a heart necklace.
Victoria says HELLO, EVERYONE!
I AM EXCITED TO HELP YOU
LEARN TODAY ABOUT DONATIONS,
WE ARE GOING TO BE LEARNING
ABOUT PLACES AND WAYS
THAT YOU CAN DONATE,
BUT BEFORE WE BEGIN,
YOU'LL NEED SOME MATERIALS
THROUGHOUT TODAY.
YOU WILL NEED A MAKER,
A PEN OR A PENCIL,
AND OF COURSE A PAPER.
LET'S GET STARTED.
Vickie says DO YOU KNOW OF ANY
FRIENDS IN YOUR COMMUNITY
THAT ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE?
ARE YOU PART OF
AN ECO-TEAM AT SCHOOL?
HAVE YOU EVER PLANTED A TREE?
MAYBE A POLLINATOR GARDEN?
DO YOU TAKE REUSABLE SHOPPING
BAGS WHEN YOU GO TO THE STORE?
DO YOU HAVE
A REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE?
DO YOU TURN OFF THE LIGHTS
WHEN YOU LEAVE A ROOM?
WELL, THESE ARE ALL WAYS THAT
YOU CAN MAKE POSITIVE CHANGES
IN YOUR COMMUNITY.
AND I KNOW SOMEBODY
WHO IS DOING THAT.
I CALL HER MY LITTLE ECO-WARRIOR
AND SHE HAPPENS TO BE
SITTING RIGHT NEXT TO ME.
VICTORIA, WHY DON'T YOU
TELL OUR FRIENDS AT HOME
SOME OF THE WAYS YOU ARE
BEING A CHANGE AGENT.
Victoria says ONE WAY THAT I AM
HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT
IS THAT I GO AROUND PARKS,
FORESTS, AND OPEN AREAS
AND I PICK UP GARBAGE
THAT I SEE ON THE GROUND,
AND EITHER I THROW IT IN
THE RECYCLING OR THE GARBAGE.
AND TO MAKE SURE THAT I AM SAFE,
I ALWAYS BRING THESE GLOVES
SO THAT I DON'T GET ANY GERMS
OR ANYTHING THAT
IS ON THE GARBAGE.
AND OF COURSE, TO BE EXTRA SAFE,
I ALWAYS BRING AN ADULT WITH ME.
Vickie says THOSE ARE SOME GREAT WAYS
THAT YOU CAN BE A CHANGE AGENT,
AND DO SOMETHING THAT'S
GREAT FOR THE EARTH
AND DONATE YOUR TIME.
Victoria says THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS THAT
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
IN YOUR SCHOOL,
HOME, AND COMMUNITY.
SOMEONE I READ
ABOUT AT MY SCHOOL
AND AT HOME ON
THE WEBSITES IS TERRY FOX.
A black and white picture shows a young man with a prosthetic leg standing in front of a car.
Vickie says TERRY FOX IS A REALLY
GREAT EXAMPLE OF A CANADIAN
WHO MADE GREAT CHANGES,
AND HIS LEGACY
IS CONTINUING TODAY.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN
AT SCHOOL ABOUT HIM?
Victoria says TERRY FOX...
I LEARNED THAT TERRY FOX IS
A CANADIAN WHO HAD CANCER,
HE RAN A MARATHON WHEN
HE WAS 18-YEARS OLD
ON HIS PROSTHETIC LEG.
HE CALLED THIS
THE MARATHON OF HOPE.
HE ASKED PEOPLE TO DONATE
MONEY TO CANCER RESEARCH.
AND THIS-- THIS YEAR...
EVERY YEAR, ALL OVER THE WORLD,
PEOPLE WALK OR RUN
FOR THE TERRY FOX WALK
AND THEY RAISE MONEY
FOR CANCER RESEARCH.
HIS LEGACY CONTINUES,
AND TERRY SAYS ANYTHING
IS POSSIBLE IF YOU TRY.
Vickie says TERRY FOX IS A PERFECT
EXAMPLE, VICTORIA,
AND OVER 60 COUNTRIES
PARTICIPATE IN
THE TERRY FOX WALK
EVERY SINGLE YEAR.
HE CONTINUES TO BE
AN INSPIRATION FOR CANADIANS.
FRIENDS AT HOME,
DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN
THE TERRY FOX WALK WITH
YOUR SCHOOL OR COMMUNITY?
LET'S WATCH A VIDEO NOW
AND NOTICE HOW PEOPLE JUST LIKE
YOU CAN MAKING AMAZING CHANGES,
AND DONATING THEIR TIME
IN THEIR COMMUNITIES.
WE'RE GOING TO LEARN ABOUT
A CANADIAN THAT HAS INSPIRED ME,
NAMED AUTUMN PELTIER.
AUTUMN IS AN INDIGENOUS CANADIAN
FROM THE ANISHINAABE REGION
WHO IS A WATER ACTIVIST.
SHE IS TRYING TO ENSURE
THAT THERE IS CLEAN WATER IN
FIRST NATIONS COMMUNITIES
AND ALSO SHE IS ADVOCATING FOR
THE CONSERVATION OF WATER
FOR MOTHER EARTH.
LET'S WATCH NOW
AND LEARN MORE ABOUT HER STORY.
(upbeat music playing)
Logo: TVO Kids News.
Daniel dances in the set.
Daniel is in his twenties, with short curly brown hair and wears glasses, jeans, and a red T-shirt under an unbuttoned pink shirt.
He says TVOK NEWS
IS BACK,
AND WITH A BIG QUESTION.
CAN KIDS CHANGE THE WORLD?
WELL, THE STUDENTS OF
ST. MARGUERITE BOURGEOYS
CATHOLIC SCHOOL WILL TELL YOU
THAT THEY CAN AND THEY ARE.
LET'S CHECK IN.
A clip shows school students say
KIDS CAN CHANGE THE WORLD!
A girl with glasses says I HELP THE ENVIRONMENT
BY PICKING UP GARBAGE.
A girl with brown hair in a bun says AND THROWING IT
IN THE RIGHT BINS.
A boy with curly brown hair says AND PICK UP LITTER
FROM THE GROUND,
IF THEY HAVE GLOVES.
A boy with very short black hair says I LIKE,
BRUSH MY TEETH,
BUT I DON'T LEAVE THE TAP
RUNNING SO I PRESERVE WATER.
A girl with wavy black hair says I'M TRYING TO TURN OFF
HALF THE LIGHTS.
A boy with short straight brown hair says I'M PLANTING FLOWERS
AND A FEW SEEDS
IN OUR GARDEN.
A girl with curly brown hair says BECAUSE THEY PRODUCE OXYGEN
AND BEES,
THEY POLLINATE THE FLOWERS,
WHICH HELPS THE ENVIRONMENT.
They all say KIDS CAN CHANGE THE WORLD!
Daniel says AND PLEASE WELCOME
AUTUMN PELTIER,
WHO IS VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT
SAVING AND CARING FOR
THE WATER ON EARTH.
SHE'S 13,
AND HAS WON YOUTH NOBEL PRIZE,
MET THE PRIME MINISTER,
AND SPOKEN TO THE UNITED NATIONS
ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF WATER.
AUTUMN, TELL US,
WHAT DOES WATER MEAN TO YOU?
Autumn has long brown hair in a top knot and wears a gray sweatshirt.
She says WELL,
TO ME,
WATER IS REALLY IMPORTANT,
AND IT'S IMPORTANT
THAT WE AS ANISHINAABE PEOPLE
AND EVERYONE PROTECTS
THE WATER,
BECAUSE WE WERE ONLY GIVEN
SO MUCH WATER,
AND SO MUCH CLEAN
DRINKING WATER.
AND THERE'S INDUSTRIES AND
COMPANIES POLLUTING THE WATER,
AND I'M ADVOCATING
FOR THE WATER BECAUSE
WITHOUT WATER NONE OF US
WILL BE ABLE TO SURVIVE.
Daniel says SO WHY IS WATER
EVERYONE'S ISSUE?
Autumn says WELL, WATER IS THE LIFEBLOOD
OF MOTHER EARTH,
AND EVERYONE LIVES IN WATER
FOR NINE MONTHS IN THE WOMB,
AND WE'RE ALL BORN
FROM WATER.
AND WITHOUT WATER,
WE CAN'T LIVE.
SO THAT'S WHY I FEEL IT'S
EVERYONE'S ISSUE,
AND WHY EVERYONE SHOULD BE
ADVOCATES FOR THE WATER.
Pictures show Autumn holding up a copper bowl.
Daniel says OKAY, SO WHAT WAS IT LIKE
TALKING TO LEADERS OF
THE UNITED NATIONS?
A picture of Autumn speaking at the UN appears.
Autumn says WELL, TO ME, SPEAKING TO THE
LEADERS OF THE UNITED NATIONS
WAS A HUGE HONOUR,
AND A BIG OPPORTUNITY FOR ME
TO ADVOCATE FOR THE WATER,
AND ADVOCATE FOR
FIRST NATIONS PEOPLE.
AND IT WAS A REALLY AMAZING
EXPERIENCE,
AND I FELT VERY HEARD
FROM THE LEADERS.
Daniel says THIS IS SO INSPIRING.
TELL US ABOUT MEETING
THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA.
Autumn says IN 2015,
I WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY
TO GIVE HIM A WATER BUNDLE.
AND WHEN I HAD THE CHANCE,
I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW
WHAT I WAS GONNA DO,
I JUST STOOD RIGHT IN FRONT
OF HIM, AND THEN I SAID,
"I'M REALLY UNHAPPY WITH
THE CHOICES YOU'VE MADE
"AND BROKEN PROMISES
TO MY PEOPLE."
THEN HE SAID,
"I UNDERSTAND THAT."
AND THEN I STARTED CRYING.
AND HE SAID,
"I'LL PROTECT THE WATERS."
Daniel says WOW.
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR KIDS
WHO WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD,
LIKE YOU?
Autumn says ANYONE CAN DO THE WORK
THAT I'M DOING,
AND I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE OTHER
YOUTHS TO DO THE WORK
THAT I'M DOING,
AND YOUNGER CHILDREN,
BECAUSE IF WE ALL DO THIS WORK,
WE CAN HOPEFULLY MAKE A CHANGE.
Daniel says WELL THANK YOU AUTUMN,
FOR ALL THAT YOU DO,
AND HAVE DONE FOR OUR
WATER ISSUES HERE IN CANADA,
AND THE WORLD.
Autumn says THANKS FOR HAVING ME,
TVO KIDS.
Daniel says AND THANK YOU GUYS
FOR WATCHING
TVOK NEWS.
THAT'S IT FOR ME.
Logo: TVO Kids News.
Victoria reappears and says WOW, I LOVED AUTUMN'S MESSAGE
THAT IF WE DO THE WORK
WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD
IN SO MANY WAYS,
BUT ONE OF THE WAYS WE CAN
CHANGE THE WORLD IS BY DONATING.
Vickie says THAT'S RIGHT, VICTORIA.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT
THE WORD "DONATING" MEANS?
DONATING MEANS WHEN YOU
SHARE THE RESOURCES YOU HAVE
WITH OTHERS.
SOMETIMES PEOPLE
DONATE THEIR TIME,
LIKE AUTUMN PELTIER
WAS DOING IN THE VIDEO.
OR LIKE VICTORIA'S DOING BY
PICKING UP AND REMOVING LITTER
FROM THE COMMUNITY SHE LIVES IN.
SOMETIMES, THOUGH, PEOPLE MIGHT
CHOOSE TO DONATE ITEMS.
Victoria says I HAVE THIS PAIR OF SHORTS HERE
THAT DOES NOT FIT ME ANYMORE,
BUT IS IN VERY GOOD SHAPE,
SO I AM GOING TO DONATE IT
TO SOMEONE WHO CAN USE IT,
RATHER THAN ME THROWING IT OUT.
IF YOU HAVE CLOTHES AT
HOME THAT DON'T FIT YOU EITHER,
YOU COULD DONATE IT TO
SOMEONE WHO CAN USE IT.
INSTEAD OF THROWING
IT IN A LANDFILL,
BECAUSE IT'S ALSO
BETTER FOR THE EARTH.
Vickie says IT'S A GREAT IDEA
TO DONATE CLOTHING
BECAUSE IT ALSO HELPS
PEOPLE AND MOTHER EARTH.
ANOTHER THING THAT WE DONATE
AS A FAMILY ARE CANNED GOODS.
THESE ARE NON-PERISHABLE
ITEMS THAT YOU CAN DONATE.
NON-PERISHABLE MEANS THAT IT
WILL LAST FOR A LONGER TIME
AND DOES NOT NEED
TO GO INTO THE FRIDGE,
THINGS LIKE
CANNED SOUP OR BEANS.
Victoria says ALSO, SOMETIMES PEOPLE MAY
DONATE MONEY BY RAISING MONEY
WITH AN ORGANIZATION
OR CHARITY THEY CARE ABOUT.
Vickie shoes a piece of paper and says I HAVE A GREAT IDEA, VICTORIA.
WHY DON'T WE MAKE
A LIST OF IMPORTANT CAUSES
THAT WE MIGHT DONATE TO,
AND OUR FRIENDS AT HOME
CAN PARTICIPATE.
SO, FRIENDS AT HOME,
IF YOU HAVE A PIECE OF PAPER
YOU CAN GRAB ONE
AND YOU CAN MAKE A LIST AS WELL.
Victoria says SOUNDS GOOD. HERE'S A TIP.
IF YOU HAVE A PIECE OF PAPER
NEARBY YOU CAN WRITE THEM DOWN,
BUT IF YOU DON'T, YOU CAN ALWAYS
USE A PAPER THAT IS NOT AS GOOD
AND IT HAS STUFF ON IT
ON THE OTHER SIDE.
IT'S CALLED GOOS BIN PAPER.
GOOS BIN PAPER IS
GOOD ON ONE SIDE
AND WHEN-- IT'S WHEN A PAPER
IS HEADED FOR THE RECYCLING BIN
BUT INSTEAD YOU DECIDE
TO USE IT ONE MORE TIME.
THIS IS ALSO GOOD FOR THE EARTH
AND SOMETHING YOU CAN DO
TO TAKE ACTION.
Vickie says GREAT IDEA, VICTORIA.
SO, LET'S ADD THE WORD TO
OUR LIST, "DONATING FOOD."
OKAY.
WHAT ELSE CAN WE ADD?
Victoria says HM.
Vickie says MAYBE "CONSERVING WATER."
JUST LIKE AUTUMN PELTIER
TAUGHT US IN THE VIDEO.
THAT COULD ALSO MEAN DOING
SOMETHING LIKE TURNING OFF
THE TAP WHEN YOU
BRUSH YOUR TEETH,
OR MAYBE SHORTER SHOWERS.
Victoria says MM-HM.
Vickie says HM.
Victoria says WE COULD ALSO ADD
"CLEANING THE EARTH."
Vickie says GREAT IDEA.
LET'S ADD "CLEANING THE EARTH."
Vickie writes down the ideas mentioned and continues THAT'S A GREAT LIST.
HOW ARE YOU DOING,
FRIENDS AT HOME?
FEEL FREE TO ADD
ANY OF YOUR OWN IDEAS.
IF YOU WANT SOME MORE IDEAS,
WELL, WE HAVE ANOTHER VIDEO
COMING UP THAT IS GOING TO SHOW
US SOME OTHER GREAT STUDENTS
THAT ARE DOING AMAZING
THINGS IN THEIR COMMUNITY.
AS YOU WATCH I WANT
YOU TO THINK ABOUT
HOW ARE PEOPLE DONATING?
ARE THEY USING
THEIR TIME, RESOURCES,
AND WHAT ARE THE CAUSES
THAT THEY ARE DONATING FOR?
Daniel says WELCOME BACK TO TVOK NEWS.
I'M DANIEL,
AND I WANT YOU TO MEET
MOM JESSICA,
AND TWINS TAMARA AND JEREMY.
THEY CREATED THE FRIEND SEND,
A KINDNESS PROJECT
THAT MAILS CARDS TO KIDS
ALL OVER ONTARIO AND CANADA.
LET'S CHECK OUT
THEIR AMAZING STORY.
Jessica, Tamara and Jeremy sit on a sofa. Jessica is in her thirties, with long black hair. She wears a black shirt and a leaf necklace.
Jessica says I STARTED SEEING ALL
THESE POSTS ON FACEBOOK
AND ON THE INTERNET ABOUT
CHILDREN HAVING
BIRTHDAY PARTIES,
AND SOMETIMES NO OTHER
CHILDREN WOULD SHOW UP.
In her early teens with blond hair, Tamara says SHE TOLD US,
AND WE FIGURED OUT WE HAD TO
DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.
SO, WE THOUGHT OF
AN IDEA TO SEND THE CARDS,
AND WE THOUGHT TO
MAKE THE FRIEND SEND.
Jessica says AND THEN WE STARTED THINKING,
WELL, THERE'S KIDS
ALSO WHO ARE BULLIED,
AND WE REALLY BETTER DO
SOMETHING TO HELP THEM TOO.
SO WE STARTED SENDING OUT CARDS
TO KIDS WHO ARE BULLIED AS WELL.
Jeremy is around 10, with short blond hair.
Jeremy says FOR EACH PERSON WE
WRITE A DIFFERENT MESSAGE.
BUT WE ALWAYS JUST TRY...
WE MAKE IT PERSONAL,
AND WE ALWAYS JUST TRY TO GIVE
THAT BOOST OF ENCOURAGEMENT
IN THEM, AND JUST MAKE THEM FEEL
POSITIVE ABOUT THEMSELF.
Getting ready to write a card, he says I THINK I'M GONNA SAY,
"BENNETT,
HE IS ALWAYS CARED ABOUT,
AND YOU ARE AN AWESOME KID."
Then, he says FIRST, MY MOM GETS
THE e-mail ADDRESS
AND INFO ABOUT THE KID,
AND ALL THAT.
Tamara says WE FIND A CARD THAT FITS THEM
AND A MESSAGE THAT FITS THEM.
WE WRITE THAT DOWN ON THE CARD.
Jeremy says WE PUT SOME STICKERS
ON THE CARD,
AND THEN WE PUT IT IN
THE ENVELOPE, DESIGN IT,
THEN WE ALL GO
AND PUT IT IN THE MAILBOX.
I THINK THEY DEFINITELY
FEEL REALLY GOOD,
KNOWING THAT NOT JUST
THEIR FAMILY SUPPORTS THEM,
THAT EVERYONE SUPPORTS THEM,
AND YOU'RE NOT ALONE.
Tamara says IF THEY HEAR FROM OTHER KIDS,
THEY KNOW THAT IT'S SPECIAL,
BECAUSE WE GO
THROUGH THE SAME STUFF.
AND THEY'LL THINK IT'S
A LOT MORE POSITIVE TO
HEAR FROM ANOTHER KID.
Jessica says OTHER PARENTS WANT TO DO
THIS WITH THEIR CHILDREN.
WE'VE HAD GRANDPARENTS ASKING TO
DO IT WITH THEIR GRANDCHILDREN,
AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
IT'S SO EXCITING FOR US TO KNOW
THAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE TAKING
THE KINDNESS WE'RE DOING,
AND TAKING IT
INTO THEIR OWN HOMES,
AND SPREADING IT OUT TO
THESE CHILDREN WHO REALLY
NEED THE SMILES.
Tamara and Jeremy put cards into mailboxes.
She continues SO, IF ANYBODY WOULD
LIKE TO DO THIS AS WELL,
WE'RE SO EXCITED TO HAVE
OTHER PEOPLE JOIN THE PROJECT.
THEY CAN WRITE
TO US ON OUR WEBSITE.
Jeremy says THEFRIENDSEND.CA.
Daniel says JESSICA, JEREMY, AND TAMARA
STARTED THE FRIEND SEND
FOUR MONTHS AGO,
AND HAVE SENT OVER
100 CARDS TO KIDS 12 AND UNDER
THROUGHOUT CANADA.
WHAT AN AMAZING ACT OF KINDNESS.
THE FRIEND SEND IS MAKING
THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE.
AND IF YOU HAVE A STORY WE
NEED TO SHARE ON TVOK NEWS,
EMAIL US AT TVOKIDS.COM.
AND TELL US ALL ABOUT IT.
ANYWAY, I'M DANIEL,
THANKS FOR WATCHING,
AND SEE YOU NEXT WEEK.
Vickie says WHAT A BEAUTIFUL
STORY FRIEND SEND WAS.
I REALLY ENJOYED
LEARNING ABOUT THAT STORY.
WHAT WERE THE PEOPLE IN
THE VIDEO DONATING, FRIENDS?
THAT'S RIGHT,
THEY WERE DONATING THEIR TIME.
AND WHAT WAS THE CAUSE
THAT THEY WERE DONATING FOR?
She pauses and says THAT'S RIGHT, THEY WERE
MAKING THESE BEAUTIFUL CARDS
FOR PEOPLE ALL OVER
THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA,
AND SPREADING KINDNESS.
THAT WAS A REALLY AMAZING STORY.
Victoria says YEAH, THAT WAS
VERY KIND OF THEM.
I THINK WE SHOULD TAKE
THE TIME TO MAKE A CARD
FOR SOMEONE IN OUR
COMMUNITY AS WELL.
Vickie says THAT IS A GREAT IDEA.
WE CAN DONATE OUR TIME
AND MAKE A CARD FOR SOMEONE.
Victoria says OKAY, SO THE FIRST THING WE
WANT TO DO WHEN YOU GET A CARD,
YOU MIGHT NEED SOME MATERIALS,
LIKE A PIECE OF PAPER.
Vickie says SO, MAYBE OUR FRIENDS
CAN FOLLOW ALONG AT HOME,
AND GRAB SOME PAPER,
AND SOME MARKERS.
SO, WE HAVE OUR OWN
MARKERS HERE THAT YOU CAN DRAW
AND CREATE A CARD WITH US,
AND VICTORIA,
YOU'RE GOING TO WALK US
THROUGH THAT, RIGHT?
Victoria says OF COURSE.
SO, FIRST THING YOU WANT
TO DO WITH THE CARD IS DECIDE
WHO IT'S GOING TO GO TO.
I THINK I'M GOING TO DO IT
FOR THE NEIGHBOUR NEXT DOOR.
Vickie says THAT'S A GREAT IDEA.
I THINK I WILL MAKE
A CARD FOR MY BEST FRIEND
WHO LIVES IN BRITISH COLUMBIA.
Victoria says ALRIGHT, SO THE FIRST THING YOU
WANT TO DO WHEN DESIGNING A CARD
IS FOLD IT IN HALF.
YOU WANT TO MAKE (UNCLEAR).
AND THEN YOU WANT TO
PRESS ON THE CREASE LINE.
AND THE SECOND THING
YOU WANT TO DO IS DECIDE
WHICH WAY YOU WANT TO DO IT.
YOU CAN EITHER DO IT
THIS WAY OR THIS WAY.
I THINK I'M GOING
TO DO IT LANDSCAPE.
Vickie says I THINK I'M GOING
TO DO MINE PORTRAIT.
Victoria says THE SECOND THING YOU WANT TO DO
AFTER DECIDING HOW YOUR CARD IS
GOING TO LOOK, IS DECIDING
THE MESSAGE YOU WANT TO PUT
ON THE TITLE ON THE FIRST PAGE.
THE FRONT OF THE COVER.
I THINK I'M GOING TO
WRITE "STAY POSITIVE."
BECAUSE I WANT THAT MESSAGE
TO REALLY GET THROUGH TO HER
AND REALLY MAKE HER HAPPY.
Vickie says YEAH, I THINK THAT I'M GOING TO
USE THE WORDS "KEEP SMILING."
I THINK THAT IS SOMETHING
THAT MY FRIEND WOULD LIKE.
WHEN YOU'RE WRITING YOUR CARD,
THINK OF WHO YOUR AUDIENCE IS
OR WHO YOU'RE GOING
TO BE SENDING IT TO,
AND THINK OF THINGS THEY MIGHT
LIKE TO SEE ON THE CARD.
Victoria draws a flower on the cover of her car.
She continues MAYBE THEY PLAY A SPORT,
OR MAYBE THEY LIKE
A CERTAIN SONG,
OR PERHAPS THEY LIKE
A CERTAIN TYPE OF ART,
OR A GAME.
Victoria says WHEN YOU'RE DONE
WRITING THE MESSAGE,
YOU CAN DO DESIGNS
AROUND THE CARD.
LIKE SHE SAID,
YOUR NEIGHBOUR MIGHT WANT,
LIKE, IF THEY LIKE DESIGNS,
OR WHOEVER YOU'RE WRITING IT TO
YOU KNOW SOMETHING THEY LIKE.
LIKE, MAYBE THEY, LIKE SHE SAID,
SPORTS OR MAYBE
THEY LIKE TO DRAW.
YOU COULD DO SOMETHING
THAT THEY WOULD ENJOY.
YOU CAN ALSO USE DIFFERENT
COLOURS TO MAKE SURE
THAT YOUR CARD
IS EXTRA COLOURFUL.
Vickie says IF THEY HAVE A FAVOURITE
COLOUR YOU COULD EVEN
MAYBE USE THAT COLOUR, VICTORIA.
SO, YVONNE REALLY LIKES RED,
SO I'M GOING TO USE RED.
HOW ARE YOUR CARDS
COMING AT HOME, FRIENDS?
SO FAR,
I THINK IT'S COMING ALONG.
Victoria says IT IS.
Vickie says I LOVE THAT FLOWER YOU DREW,
VICTORIA.
IT'S BEAUTIFUL.
Victoria says I DREW A FLOWER BECAUSE I KNOW
OUR NEIGHBOUR LIKES FLOWERS.
YOU COULD ALSO DRAW SHAPES,
OR A (UNCLEAR),
OR WHATEVER YOU FEEL LIKE DOING.
Vickie says SO, WHAT ARE WE
GOING TO DO ON THE INSIDE?
WHAT WOULD YOU SUGGEST?
Victoria says ONCE YOU'RE DONE THAT,
YOU'RE GOING TO
OPEN UP THE CARD,
JUST LIKE THAT.
AND THEN YOU CAN
WRITE THE MESSAGE
ON WHATEVER SIDE YOU LIKE.
WHEN YOU WRITE THE MESSAGE,
YOU WANT THE MESSAGE TO MATCH
WHAT YOU PUT ON THE COVER.
SO, IF YOU SAID KEEP SMILING,
YOU COULD SAY SOMETHING
ABOUT SMILING OR GET THEM TO
SAY, LIKE, I HOPE YOU KEEP...
MAKE SURE THE KEEP SMILING
AT THIS HARD TIME, OR SOMETHING.
UM, YOU COULD START
OFF WITH ANY WORDS,
ANY STARTER OF A SENTENCE.
YOU COULD DO "TO,"
YOU COULD DO "DEAR,"
YOU COULD DO "THANK YOU,"
OR ANYTHING THAT YOU
REALLY WANT THE MESS...
YOUR NEIGHBOUR, OR WHOEVER
YOU'RE PUTTING IT TO, TO HEAR.
Vickie says GREAT IDEAS.
I THINK, BECAUSE MY CARD IS
GOING TO MY BEST FRIEND,
I'M GOING TO WRITE HER NAME.
SO, I'M GOING TO WRITE,
"DEAR YVONNE."
NOW, WE GOTTA
REMEMBER TO CAPITALIZE
THE NAME OF OUR FRIENDS
BECAUSE THEY ARE
PROPER NOUNS, RIGHT?
Victoria says MM-HM. I'M GOING TO PUT,
"TO NEIGHBOUR."
Vickie says AWESOME, AND THEN,
MAYBE A NICE MESSAGE
THAT WILL SPREAD KINDNESS
AND MAKE THEM FEEL,
UM, CARED FOR.
SO, I'M GOING TO SAY, "THANK YOU
FOR BEING A WONDERFUL FRIEND.
HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON."
AND WHEN WE END OUR CARDS,
WHAT DO YOU THINK
WE SHOULD WRITE?
ANY IDEAS, VICTORIA?
Victoria says YOU COULD WRITE "SINCERELY."
YOU COULD SAY "TAKE CARE,"
"STAY SAFE."
ANY MESSAGE YOU FEEL IS RIGHT.
Vickie says GREAT.
AWESOME.
WELL, WE'RE GOING TO
CONTINUE TO WORK ON OUR CARDS,
AND WHILE WE'RE DOING THAT,
WE'RE GOING TO WATCH ANOTHER
VIDEO ABOUT SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN
WHO ARE DONATING THEIR
TIME IN THEIR COMMUNITY.
AS YOU WATCH,
THINK ABOUT WHAT IS THE CAUSE
THEY ARE DONATING FOR,
AND HOW THEY ARE
HELPING THE CAUSE.
ARE THEY USING THEIR TIME?
ARE THEY USING RESOURCES?
SO, LET'S WATCH.
Daniel says IT IS TIME FOR OUR
TVO K NEWS
FEATURE,
ALL ABOUT THE AMAZING
STUDENTS AT
EDENROSE PUBLIC SCHOOL
IN MISSISSAUGA.
THEY HELD A DRIVE TO COLLECT
ESSENTIAL ITEMS
FOR SOME REALLY IMPORTANT
MEMBERS OF THEIR COMMUNITY.
LET'S FIND OUT WHO.
(music plays)
A clip rolls on a screen behind him.
Kids walk in a school bus.
A girl in a yellow cardigan sweater says MY NAME IS IZZA, I WAS A
TERRIFIC TICKET WINNER,
SO I GOT TO GO TO THE
ANIMAL SHELTER.
A girl with glasses says HI, MY NAME IS ZEON,
AND I WAS PART OF THE GROUP
WHO ELECTED BLANKETS,
TOWELS, AND NEWS PAPER
FOR THE ANIMAL SHELTER.
Izza says IF YOU'RE A TERRIFIC
TICKET WINNER,
THAT MEANS YOU
DEMONSTRATED ONE OF THE
POSITIVE CHARACTER TRAITS.
FOR EXAMPLE, HONESTY, CARING,
COOPERATION, REASON,
RESPECT, AND RESPONSIBILITY.
THE TERRIFIC TICKETS
ARE IN A JAR,
AND IF YOUR NAME GETS
PICKED OUT,
YOU'LL BE ABLE TO GO
ON A FIELD TRIP
TO HELP PEOPLE IN NEED.
Daniel says INSTEAD OF PEOPLE,
THIS TIME EDENROSE PUBLIC
SCHOOL DECIDED TO HELP
SOME OF THEIR FURRY FRIENDS.
Izza says WE'RE AT THE ANIMAL SHELTER,
LET'S SEE WHICH ANIMALS
WE CAN HELP.
Linda says WELL, GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE.
Linda is in her forties, with long slightly wavy blond hair with bangs and she wears a blue uniform.
Students say GOOD MORNING.
Linda says MY NAME IS LINDA,
AND I WANT TO WELCOME YOU
HERE TO ANIMAL SERVICES.
Daniel says THE STUDENTS WERE LED
INSIDE FOR A SHORT TALK
ABOUT THE SERVICES THE ANIMAL
SHELTER PROVIDES.
THE ANIMAL SHELTER CARES
FOR OVER 3,000 LOST,
ABANDONED, OR UNWANTED
PETS EACH YEAR.
THE STUDENTS WERE ALL SUPER
EXCITED TO MEET
SOME OF THE TEMPORARY
RESIDENTS OF
MISSISSAUGA
ANIMAL SERVICES.
THEY EVEN HAD TIME TO GIVE
THEM SOME EXTRA LOVE.
Izza says I LEARNED THAT IT'S A NICE THING
TO HELP ALL THE ANIMALS
THAT ARE SICK OR INJURED.
A girl with curly red hair in pigtails says WE LEARNED TO TAKE CARE OF
ANIMALS AND HELP THEM
IF THEY'RE IN TROUBLE.
A girl with brown hair in a bob cut says THEY RESCUE LOTS OF PETS THERE.
A girl in a straw hat says THE COOLEST THING BEING AT
THE ANIMAL SHELTER IS
SEEING CATS AND DOGS,
AND ALL THE ANIMALS
THAT ARE GETTING ADOPTED.
Izza says THEY ALL NEED SOME THINGS TO
HELP THE ANIMALS TO STAY COZY,
AND FOR THEM TO EXERCISE
AND STAY HEALTHY.
The girl with glasses says WE HAD SO MUCH FUN LEARNING
ABOUT HOW TO HELP ANIMALS
IN OUR COMMUNITY.
THANK YOU, TVO KIDS,
FOR HAVIN US.
All the kids say THANK YOU MISSISSAUGA
ANIMAL SHELTER!
Daniel says WOW, AND THANK YOU,
EDENROSE PUBLIC SCHOOL,
FOR GETTING OUT IN
YOUR COMMUNITY
TO HELP ALL OUR
FURRY FRIENDS.
NOW, DO YOU HAVE A GREAT
STORY THAT YOU THINK
TVO K NEWS
NEEDS TO SHARE?
DROP US A LINE AT TVOKIDS.COM.
THAT'S ALL FOR THIS WEEK,
I'M DANIEL,
AND SEE YOU AGAIN
REALLY SOON.
Vickie says WHAT A FUN STORY THAT WAS TO
LISTEN TO AND SEE HOW SOME
FRIENDS ARE HELPING
OUR FURRY FRIENDS,
OUR PETS AT SHELTERS.
IT'S A BEAUTIFUL STORY.
SO, I THINK WE SHOULD
ADD THAT TO OUR LIST.
Victoria says YEAH, ONE-- ONE OF THE CAUSES
I'D LIKE TO SUPPORT THAT MAYBE
WE COULD ADD TO OUR LIST, TOO,
IS KIDS HELP PHONE.
A caption reads "KidsHelpPhone.ca."
Vickie says OH, THAT'S A GREAT IDEA,
VICTORIA.
KIDS HELP PHONE IS
AN AMAZING ORGANIZATION
THAT IS A 24-7 NATIONAL
ORGANIZATION HELPING CHILDREN
AND OUR YOUNG PEOPLE
JUST LIKE YOU.
YOU CAN ACCESS
THE KIDS' HELP PHONE ANY TIME,
AND YOU CAN USE YOUR PHONE,
YOUR COMPUTER, YOU CAN TEXT,
AND IT'S AVAILABLE IN
FRENCH AND ENGLISH.
The caption changes to "1-800-668-6868."
She continues YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO
PROVIDE YOUR REAL NAME.
YOU CAN KEEP IT COMPLETELY
ANONYMOUS AND CONFIDENTIAL
IF YOU WOULD LIKE NOT
TO PROVIDE YOUR NAME.
AND IT'S JUST AN AMAZING
ORGANIZATION THAT PEOPLE ACCESS
IN CANADA,
YOUNG PEOPLE, ALL THE TIME.
SO, I THINK THAT IS
AN AWESOME IDEA.
Victoria says EVERYONE AT HOME YOU CAN
CHOOSE SOMETHING ON YOUR LIST,
AND DRAW A CIRCLE AROUND IT
OR IF YOU WANT YOU COULD SPEND
SOME TIME THINKING ABOUT IT
AND DECIDE LATER.
MAYBE YOU CAN TALK TO A GROWN-UP
OR BROTHER OR SISTER,
AND MAYBE THEY CAN
HELP YOU DISCUSS IT MORE
AND CHOOSE WHAT YOU
WANT ON YOUR LIST.
Vickie says GREAT. SO, SHOULD WE CIRCLE
KIDS HELP PHONE ON OUR LIST
AS THE ORGANIZATION THAT WE'RE
GOING TO PICK TODAY TO HELP?
Victoria says I THINK WE SHOULD.
Vickie shows her list and says AWESOME. SO, WE'RE GOING TO
CIRCLE OUR ORGANIZATION,
BUT YOU CAN THINK
ABOUT YOUR ORGANIZATION
A LITTLE BIT LONGER.
AND MAYBE, LIKE VICTORIA SAID,
TALK TO SOMEONE AT HOME
AFTER THE EPISODE IS FINISHED,
AND COME UP WITH SOMETHING
THAT YOU'D LIKE TO DO.
The TVO Kids logo appears against an animated starry sky. The words "Super Citizens" appear next to a shooting star.
The announcer says IT'S TIME FOR A TVO KIDS
SUPER CITIZENS AWARD!
AND THE SUPER, TERRIFIC
AND ROCKING AWARD GOES TO...
NA'AMA!
A caption reads "Na'ama. Angelman's Syndrome."
Na'ama is around 7, with mid-length wavy red hair and she wears a printed gray T-shirt and a bow on her hair.
She says MY NAME IS NA'AMA AND
I'M RAISING MONEY TO
HELP FIND A CURE FOR
ALL THE ANGELMAN KIDS.
A caption reads "Na'ama raises money for a genetic disorder called Angelman's Syndrome which causes seizures, and makes it difficult to walk and speak."
Na'ama says I'M RAISING MONEY TO
FIND A CURE SO THAT
ALL THE ANGELMAN KIDS,
INCLUDING MY BROTHER,
WILL HAVE A CURE.
AND THEY'LL BE ABLE
TO TALK AND THEY WON'T
HAVE SEIZURES ANYMORE.
AND THAT WILL MAKE
ME VERY HAPPY.
I WAS PLAYING WITH MY
MOM AND I SAID WHY IS
NADAV SO MUCH DIFFERENT
FROM ME AND YOU, AND
SHE EXPLAINED TO
ME AND THEN...
At a lemonade stand, someone puts coins in a jar.
She says THANK YOU FOR
YOUR SUPPORT.
WE DID A LEMONADE STAND,
AND I WAS 4 AND A HALF
WHEN WE STARTED.
I HAVE THE LEMONADE STAND
AT THE BOTTOM OF MY DRIVEWAY.
The caption changes to "Na'ama runs a lemonade stand every week in the summer and once a month in the winter time."
Na'ama says SOME OF THE THINGS THAT
HAVE TO BE DONE IS
YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE
LEMONADE, PUSH THE CART,
BRING EVERYTHING OUT,
THEN I NEED TO YELL
ICE COLD LEMONADE
50 CENTS A CUP!
ALL GOES TO A CURE
FOR ANGELMAN'S SYNDROME!
JUST A LOT LOUDER.
The caption changes to "In addition to her lemonade stand, Na'ama has raised money from donations, barbecues, hot chocolate and bake sales."
Na'ama says I'VE RAISED
91,000 DOLLARS SO FAR.
[applause]
I REALLY THINK IT'S
IMPORTANT THAT ANGELMAN
KIDS SHOULD ALSO
KNOW HOW TO TALK.
I REALLY WANT TO
CURE THEM, AND I THINK
IT'S VERY IMPORTANT
TO HELP MY COMMUNITY.
IT'S IMPORTANT FOR
ME TO HELP MY BROTHER
BECAUSE I LOVE HIM,
AND I REALLY WANT HIM
TO BE CURED.
A caption reads "Na'ama. Fundraiser."
The announcer says CONGRATULATIONS!
YOU ARE A TRUE
SUPER CITIZEN!

Victoria says THAT'S RIGHT! IT DOESN'T.
TRY TO DONATE SOME
OF YOUR TIME THIS WEEK
TO HELP OUT
AN ADULT OR GROWN-UP.

WE'LL SEE YOU AGAIN ON
TVO KIDS
POWER HOUR OF LEARNING.
REMEMBER YOU ARE CHANGE MAKERS
AND YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
They wave.
A slate reads "Bonus Material."
(dog barking)
(music plays)
In the attic, Zoey crouches down in home video and dances as animated flowers pop up around her. She has two braids and wears a red dress under a denim vest.
Zoey plays the ukelele and sings
MY NAME IS ZOEY
AND THIS IS MY SHOW
I'M FINDING STUFF OUT
THAT YOU WANT TO KNOW
JUST ASK ME A QUESTION
THAT I DON'T KNOW
THAT'S WHY "FINDING STUFF OUT."
She opens a laptop and animated creatures appear.
She continues singing
IS THE NAME OF MY SHOW
SO JUST GIVE ME A SHOUT
AND WE'LL FIGURE IT OUT
WITH THE HELP
OF SOME FRIENDS
AND THE FUN NEVER ENDS
ON "FINDING STUFF OUT."
FINDING STUFF OUT
FINDING STUFF OUT
THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT
YEAH
Zoey pushes a TV screen that reads "Finding Stuff Out" in yellow letters.
In the attic, Zoey carries tools in a forklift.
Zoey says HEY, GUESS WHAT ALL
THIS STUFF'S FOR.
I'VE DECIDED TO GROW
MY OWN LUNCH
AN EGG SALAD SANDWICH
WITH TOMATOES AND LETTUCE.
OKAY, I'M NOT EXACTLY SURE WHAT
A FARMER'S SUPPOSED TO WEAR.
OR WHAT A FARMER'S
SUPPOSED TO USE.
ANYWAY... WHY AM I GROWING
MY OWN LUNCH?
TO ANSWER SARA'S QUESTION.
Zoey turns to look at the TV screen. She presses a remote control. Sara's picture appears on the screen against a black background with white question marks.
Sara says IF THERE WERE NO GROCERY
STORES, WHERE WOULD WE GET FOOD?
An animated yellow question mark crosses the screen holding a flag.
Zoey says GOOD QUESTION.
THAT MAKES ME WONDER:
WHERE DOES THE FOOD COME FROM
IN THE FIRST PLACE?
LIKE, WHERE WOULD I GET
SPAGHETTI FROM?
A NOODLE TREE?
THAT DOESN'T SOUND RIGHT.
BUT EVERYTHING YOU GET
FROM THE GROCERY STORES
INCLUDING JUNK FOOD, LIKE
CHIPS, DONUTS, OR HOT DOGS -
HAVE TO BE MADE FROM STUFF THAT
WAS GROWN BY A FARMER SOMEWHERE.
An animation shows hot dogs and donuts growing in a plant. Zoey watches the animated clip on a TV screen and laughs.
Back at the attic, Zoey says WHAT WOULD WE DO IF WE COULDN'T
GET FOOD FROM GROCERY STORES?
WOULD WE GROW IT OURSELVES?
I'M GONNA GIVE IT A TRY.
AND BY THE END OF THE SHOW,
I'LL HAVE THE ANSWER
TO SARA'S QUESTION.
BUT FIRST,
BRENNA HAS A QUESTION
THAT TAKES US RIGHT BACK
TO THE BEGINNING OF IT ALL.
Brenna says WHO INVENTED FOOD?
A kid plays with a cave doll and a monkey toy.
Cave doll says OH!
BERRIES LOOK DELICIOUS.
BUT ME NOT KNOW
IF THEY ARE POISON. OH!
ME HAVE IDEA.
WATCH ANIMALS AND SEE
WHICH BERRIES THEY EAT.
(monkey noises)
OH! MONKEY IS EATING BERRIES.
(chewing)
HE SEEMS OKAY.
NOW ME EAT BERRIES.
(chewing)
YUMMY! BERRIES NOT POISONOUS.
BUT ME EAT TOO MANY.
TUMMY ACHE!
Zoey watches the clip on her laptop and laughs.
Zoey says ANCIENT HUMANS MAY HAVE
FIGURED OUT WHAT FOODS
WERE SAFE TO EAT BY WATCHING
ANIMALS AND COPYING THEM.
BUT IT WASN'T ALWAYS
THE BEST IDEA,
BECAUSE SOME ANIMALS EAT THINGS
THAT CAN MAKE PEOPLE SICK.
THEN, ABOUT 8,500 YEARS AGO
SOMEONE HAD A CRAZY IDEA
TO COLLECT SEEDS,
AND TO PLANT THEM IN THE GROUND
TO SEE IF THEY WOULD GROW.
AND THEY DID.
She starts to draw and her drawings come to live. A female pheasant plants seeds.
The female pheasant says WOOHOO!
Zoey says I FOUND OUT IT WAS
THE VERY BEGINNING OF FARMING.
AND IT CHANGED EVERYTHING,
BECAUSE PEOPLE DIDN'T HAVE TO
WANDER AROUND LOOKING FOR FOOD.
THEY COULD START VILLAGES.
AS PEOPLE DISCOVERED
HOW TO GROW NEW FOODS,
THEY STARTED TO TRADE
WITH OTHER VILLAGES.
SOON, EVERYONE HAD A LOT OF
DIFFERENT KINDS OF FOODS TO EAT.
NOW, FOR MY EGG SALAD SANDWICH,
I'LL DEFINITELY NEED SOME EGGS.
I JUST HAVE TO FIND
SOME CHICKENS.
BUT FIRST, HERE'S A GREAT
CHICKEN QUESTION FROM VANESSA.
Vanessa says WHY DO CHICKENS LAY
DIFFERENT COLORED EGGS?
BECAUSE I'VE SEEN
BROWN EGGS AND WHITE EGGS.
Zoey says THAT'S A TOUGH EGG
TO CRACK, VANESSA.
BUT I HAVE SOME EXPERTS
WHO CAN ANSWER YOUR QUESTION.
PLEASE WELCOME
CHICKEN FARMERS
KATE BELBECK
AND HER SON, FLETCHER.
Zoey welcomes them strumming her ukulele.
Kate holds a chicken. She wears a blue T-shirt and has short hair.
Kate says HEY, ZOEY.
I HEARD YOU NEEDED SOME
EGG LAYERS FOR YOUR SANDWICH.
Zoey says YOU BROUGHT CHICKENS?
HI, CHICKENS.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE CHICKEN
AROUND ME.
THIS IS SO EGG-CITING.
GET IT? EGG-CITING?
(chicken clucks)
SO, DO YOU OFTEN LEND
CHICKENS TO PEOPLE?
Kate says WE DO. WE ACTUALLY
RENT CHICKENS TO PEOPLE
WHO WANT TO HAVE THEIR OWN
FRESHLY LAID EGGS ALL SUMMER.
Zoey says THIS IS AWESOME.
CAN I NAME THEM?
Fletcher is 12 years old. He has short blond hair. He wears a blue T-shirt.
Fletcher says YES, IT'S OKAY
FOR YOU TO NAME THEM.
WE LET EVERYONE NAME THEM.
Zoey says OH BOY! I'LL NAME
THAT ONE MOLLY,
THAT ONE
PRINCESS PUMPERNICKEL,
THAT ONE PIPSQUEAK,
AND THAT ONE CLUCKY.
SO, WHY DO CHICKENS LAY
DIFFERENT COLORED EGGS?
Kate says IN THE BEGINNING, ALL EGGS
ARE WHITE INSIDE THE CHICKEN.
DIFFERENT BREEDS WILL LAY DOWN
A DIFFERENT COLOR OR PIGMENT,
IN THE LAST FEW HOURS
BEFORE THEY'RE LAID.
Fletcher says THESE THREE CHICKENS HERE
LAY BROWN EGGS.
AND THE CHICKEN OVER THERE,
SHE WILL LAY BLUE EGGS.
BUT IF YOU GET A CROSS BETWEEN
THE BROWN EGG LAYERS
AND THE BLUE EGG LAYERS, YOU CAN
GET A GREEN EGG FROM THEM.
Zoey says GREEN EGGS! IS THAT
WHERE GREEN EGGS AND HAM COME
FROM?
SO ARE BLUE EGGS BLUE INSIDE?
Kate laughs and says ACTUALLY, NO.
THEY'RE ALL THE SAME
INSIDE THE SHELL.
Zoey says SO WHAT DO THEY EAT?
Kate says WELL, THEY ACTUALLY EAT
THIS GRAIN FOOD THAT'S JUST A
MIX OF GRAINS ALL CRUMBLED UP.
Zoey says SO, HOW DO YOU FEED
THEM?
Fletcher says YOU JUST GET
A BIT OF FOOD,
AND YOU CAN SPRINKLE IT
ON THE GROUND.
AND THEY'LL EVENTUALLY EAT IT.
Zoey says HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE
FOR THEM TO LAY EGGS?
A COUPLE OF WEEKS?
Fletcher says NO. NOT EVEN CLOSE.
THEY'LL ALL LAY ONE EGG A DAY,
STARTING RIGHT AWAY.
Zoey says THAT MEANS I'M GOING
TO HAVE FOUR EGGS TODAY!
Kate says I HOPE YOU LIKE OMELETS.
Zoey says FOUR EGGS A DAY?
She uses her cell phone calculator and says THAT'S... 28 EGGS A WEEK!
AND THEN I'LL HAVE...
112 EGGS A MONTH!
AND THEN I'LL HAVE...
1,344 EGGS A YEAR!
THAT MEANS I'LL HAVE
672 EGG SALAD SANDWICHES.
She screams AGH! SO MANY SANDWICHES!
AGH!
(chicken clucks)
In an animation, Zoey's head explodes. Bright light orange letters read "You're gonna make my head explode."
She screams YOU'RE GONNA MAKE
MY HEAD EXPLODE!
Zoey sighs and says I'M GONNA HAVE TO GET CRACKING.
A chicken says I'M GONNA HAVE
TO GET LAYING.
Zoey says THANKS FOR LENDING ME
YOUR CHICKENS, GUYS.
I'LL TAKE EGG-CELLENT
CARE OF THEM.
Kate says NO PROBLEM, ZOEY.
WE KNOW YOU'LL BE AN EGG-
CEPTIONAL CHICKEN HANDLER.
Zoey laughs.
Then, at the crack of dawn, Zoey says CLUCKY, PUMPERNICKEL,
SUCH BEAUTIES.
She types in a laptop and a clip shows children's faces in different windows. A slate reads "Ask a Friend."
Zoey says HEY, GUYS.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE FOODS
THAT ARE MADE WITH EGGS?
Girl 1 says EGGS WITH TOAST.
Boy 1 says HARD-BOILED EGGS.
Boy 2 says AN EGG SANDWICH.
Girl 2 says EGG SALAD AND TUNA
SANDWICH.
Girl 3 says CAKE.
Girl 4 says OMELETS, BECAUSE
IT TASTES REALLY GOOD.
Boy 3 says PANCAKES.
Girl 5 says I LIKE AN OVER-EASY
WITH SOME BACON ON THE SIDE.
Boy 4 says EGG SANDWICH AND EGG SALAD.
Boy 5 says EGG SANDWICH BUT WITH,
LIKE, KETCHUP AND BROCCOLI.
Zoey says HMMM... I'LL TRY THAT.
NOW, WHAT ELSE DO I NEED
FOR MY SANDWICH, BESIDES EGGS?
OH, YEAH, BREAD.
I ACTUALLY GOT
A QUESTION ABOUT BREAD.
Zoey types in her laptop and Auxance's picture appears.
Auxance says WHERE DOES BREAD COME FROM?
Zoey says THAT GIVES ME
A GREAT IDEA FOR...
(trumpet fanfare)
In an animation, Zoey spins the world on one finger. Bright light orange letters read "My Great Challenge."
Zoey says TODAY WE'RE PLAYING...
Blue and red letters read "What0s that food made from?"
Zoey says MELISSA, CHIARA,
YOU'RE TEAM MUNCH.
Team Munch says YAY!
Zoey says DANIELLE, ANDREAS,
YOU'RE TEAM CRUNCH.
Andreas has short blond hair and wears a red shirt. Danielle has brown hair. He wears glasses and an orange polo-shirt.
Team Crunch says YEAH!
Zoey says EACH TEAM WILL HAVE
TO MATCH UP
EACH OF THE FAMILIAR FOODS
OVER HERE ON THE TABLES
WITH THE PLANT OR ANIMAL
THAT THEY'RE MADE FROM.
OVER THERE.
LET'S PULL NOODLES
TO SEE WHO GOES FIRST.
OKAY, MUNCH, YOU GUYS ARE
GOING FIRST. GET MATCHING.
Chiara has curly black hair. She wears a white shirt.
Chiara says SO DO WE TAKE
THE CHOCOLATE FIRST?
WHERE DOES IT GO?
HERE?
Melissa has straight long blond hair. She wears a pink T-shirt.
Melissa says THOSE SORT OF LOOK
LIKE COCOA BEANS.
Chiara says YEAH. I THINK.
HERE.
A panel of pictures showing plants sits in the middle of a colourful table. Melissa places a bowl in front of a picture of cocoa beans. An animated green tick appears on screen.
Zoey says THAT'S RIGHT. CHOCOLATE
IS MADE BY ROASTING THE BEANS
FROM INSIDE THIS WEIRD
LOOKING COCOA PLANT POD.
TEAM CRUNCH, GO.
TEAM CRUNCH SELECTED
THE POPCORN.
AND THEY'RE MATCHING IT WITH
CORN, AND THEY'RE RIGHT.
HEAT UP DRIED CORN KERNELS,
AND THEY BECOME POPCORN.
Chiara says THIS SHOULD GO...
Zoey says THE CINNAMON STICKS!
Melissa says I THINK IT GOES THERE.
Zoey says THEY'RE MATCHING THE CINNAMON
STICKS WITH THE SUGAR CANE.
AND THAT'S NOT RIGHT.
An animated red cross appears on one of the panel pictures.
Danielle says THE LOLLIPOP...
Zoey says TEAM CRUNCH IS MATCHING THE
LOLLIPOP WITH THE SUGAR CANE.
THAT'S RIGHT. LOLLIPOPS
ARE MOSTLY MADE OF SUGAR,
WHICH IS MADE BY BOILING THIS
TALL GRASS CALLED SUGAR CANE.
Chiara says BREAD MAYBE?
Melissa says OKAY.
Chiara says YEAH, IT GOES HERE.
Danielle says PEANUT BUTTER SHOULD GO...
Zoey says THAT'S RIGHT. PEANUT
BUTTER'S MADE WITH PEANUTS,
WHICH GROW UNDERGROUND, ON
THE ROOTS OF THE PEANUT PLANT.
Chiara says THE CHEESE.
I'M SURE IT GOES WITH THE COW.
Zoey says THAT WAS AN EASY ONE.
Andreas says CHEESE.
Zoey says REAL EASY.
Chiara says I THINK THE MAPLE
SYRUP IS FROM A TREE.
Melissa says THAT ONE OR THAT ONE?
Chiara says MAYBE IT'S WRONG.
MAYBE IT'S RIGHT.
Zoey says IT'S RIGHT.
MAPLE SYRUP IS MADE WITH
THE SAP OF THE MAPLE TREE,
WHICH GETS BOILED DOWN
TO BECOME THICK AND SUGARY.
TEAM CRUNCH IS PUTTING
THEIR CHOCOLATE
IN FRONT OF THE CINNAMON TREE.
NOPE!
Melissa says A LOLLIPOP.
Chiara says PUT IT THERE.
Zoey says AND TEAM MUNCH ALSO GETS
THE CINNAMON TREE WRONG.
AUXANCE, HERE'S THE ANSWER
TO YOUR QUESTION.
Auxance says WHERE DOES BREAD COME FROM?
Zoey says BOTH TEAMS PUT THE BREAD
IN FRONT OF THE WHEAT.
AND THEY'RE RIGHT.
WHEAT SEEDS ARE GROUND UP
TO MAKE FLOUR, WHICH IS
THE MAIN INGREDIENT IN BREAD.
Chiara says SO... UM...
MAYBE THE OCEAN IS SALTY?
Chiara says OKAY. PUT IT THERE.
Melissa places a salt shaker on the table.
Melissa says I THINK IT'S WRONG.
Zoey says ACTUALLY, THAT'S RIGHT. MOST
SALT COMES FROM OCEAN WATER.
Andreas says SEA SALT.
Melissa says PEANUT BUTTER.
Chiara says WHERE DOES THAT GO?
Melissa says IT HAS PEANUTS! YEAH.
Andreas says CINNAMON STICKS ARE...
OH, NO.
Danielle says WE SHOULD'VE SWITCHED...
Zoey says THAT'S RIGHT,
BECAUSE CINNAMON
IS MADE FROM THE BARK
OF THE CINNAMON TREE.
Andreas says LET'S PUT IT HERE.
Chiara says MMMM... FRENCH FRIES.
Melissa says WITH THE POTATOES.
Zoey says THAT'S ANOTHER EASY ONE.
Andreas says FRENCH FRIES.
Melissa says POPCORN.
WITH CORN, BECAUSE IT'S...
Melissa says LIKE POPCORN.
THAT'S THE LAST THING.
MAPLE SYRUP. IT COMES FROM
A TREE, SO IT MAKES SENSE.
The teams' scores are tied.
Zoey says OKAY,
YOU GUYS ARE DONE.
TEAM MUNCH, YOU HAVE EIGHT
MATCHES OUT OF TEN.
Team Munch says YEAH!
Zoey says AND TEAM CRUNCH, YOU ALSO HAVE
EIGHT MATCHES OUT OF TEN.
Team Crunch says WOO!
Zoey says SO, IT'S A TIE.
THANKS FOR PLAYING...
WHAT'S THAT FOO MADE FROM?
NOW, LET'S NOT ALL LET THIS
GO TO WASTE. COME ON!
They all run to the table.
Melissa says I WANT THE POPCORN!
Danielle says I WANT THE
CHOCOLATE! CHOCOLATE!
Andreas says I WANT THE POP.
(music plays)
Zoey sings and dances against an animated background with all kinds of food.
Zoey sings TAKE A GOOD LOOK
AT THAT SANDWICH
OR AT THAT BUBBLE GUM
DO YOU WONDER
WHAT THEY'RE MADE OF?
WHERE DID THEY COME FROM?
WE CAN'T HAVE BREAD
WITHOUT GROUND UP WHEAT
GUM USED TO BE MADE
WITH RUBBER FROM THIS TREE
SUCH A CHEWY TREAT
SEE THOSE FISH STICKS
ON YOUR PLATE
THEY'RE MADE FROM HADDOCK,
SOLE OR COD
THAT CANDY FLOSS IS MADE
WITH YAK HAIR
ALL BALLED UP
INTO A WAD
WHAT? IT'S MADE OF SUGAR? OH!
WELL, IF YOU'RE
EVER FEEDING
AND WONDERING
WHAT YOU'RE EATING
COME SING THIS SONG
WITH ME
Maegan says HOW WAS KETCHUP INVENTED?
At the attic, Zoey says WHO DOESN'T LOVE
KETCHUP?
SO I CHECKED, AND IT'S MADE
WITH SQUISHED TOMATOES,
SUGAR, VINEGAR,
AND IT GOES WITH EVERYTHING.
BUT THE FIRST KETCHUP INVENTED
DIDN'T TASTE ANYTHING
LIKE THIS STUFF.
I FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS MADE
FROM MUSHROOMS, WALNUTS,
OYSTERS, OR LITTLE FISH
CALLED ANCHOVIES. YUMMY.
LUCKILY, A SCIENTIST NAMED
JAMES MEASE INTRODUCED TOMATOES
IN HIS NEW KETCHUP RECIPE,
AND THE REST IS HISTORY.
WE MAKE TONS OF GOOD SAUCES
OUT OF TOMATOES.
BUT THEY DIDN'T ALWAYS HAVE
SUCH A GOOD REPUTATION.
Two animated pirates sing YAR, HAR, HAR!
(GASPING) ARGH!
The sea ends and their boat falls.
Bright light orange letters read "The Flat Earth Corner."
Wearing an old grocer custom, Zoey holds an tomato and says BEHOLD!
THE DEADLY AND HORRIBLE TOMATO!
SAVE YOURSELF
AND YOUR CHILDREN
FROM THIS STINKY,
POISONOUS DEVIL FRUIT.
IT WAS BROUGHT TO EUROPE
BY FOOLISH TRAVELERS.
WHATEVER YOU DO,
DON'T EAT THEM,
OR YOU WILL DIE
A HORRIBLE DEATH.
INSTEAD, TRY A SAFE
AND HEALTHY FRUIT,
LIKE THIS APPLE.
AGH! IT WAS A TOMATO!
AGH! THE END IS NEAR.
AGH!
At the attic, Zoey says FOR OVER 200 HUNDRED
YEARS PEOPLE IN EUROPE
WERE AFRAID OF TOMATOES?
THAT WAS THANKS TO
A BRITISH BARBER, SURGEON,
AND SCIENTIST NAMED JOHN GIRARD.
HE DESCRIBED TOMATOES AS
STINKING AND BEING POISONOUS.
AND EVERYONE BELIEVED HIM.
THIS MYTH BEGAN BECAUSE
PEOPLE ATE TOMATOES
ON PLATES MADE OF A METAL CALLED
PEWTER AND GOT REALLY SICK.
BUT IT WASN'T
THE TOMATOES' FAULT.
THERE WAS A POISONOUS CHEMICAL
IN THE PEWTER CALLED LEAD
THAT SEEPED INTO THE TOMATOES.
IT'S TOO BAD FOR SO LONG
EUROPEANS WERE MISSING OUT.
IMAGINE SPAGHETTI AND MEATBALLS
WITHOUT THE TOMATO SAUCE.
IT'S JUST NOT THE SAME.
In an animation, Zoey turns into a giant robot walking in the street. Bright light orange letters read "Do try this at home."
Talking to chickens, Zoey says YOU GUYS ARE THE MESSIEST
ROOMMATES EVER.
LOOK AT THIS PLACE.
YOU KNOW, IF WE LIVED IN A WORLD
WITHOUT GROCERY STORES,
YOU MIGHT THINK YOU COULD GET
YOUR FOOD DIRECTLY FROM FARMERS.
WELL, IT MIGHT
NOT BE THAT EASY.
BECAUSE A WHOLE LOT OF THE FOOD
THAT WE GET FROM GROCERY STORES,
COMES FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD.
SO THE NEXT TIME YOU'RE AT THE
STORE, LOOK CLOSE AT THE LABEL,
AND IT WILL SHOW YOU WHERE
IN THE WORLD IT COMES FROM.
SEE, THIS PEAR SAYS IT'S FROM SOUTH AFRICA.
THAT'S WAY DOWN HERE!
THIS GARLIC COMES FROM CHINA.
AND THESE GRAPES WERE
GROWN IN MEXICO.
CHECK OUT YOUR FRUITS
AND VEGETABLES AT HOME.
SEE WHICH ONES ARE GROWN
CLOSE TO WHERE YOU LIVE.
Animated fruits appear.
A pear says HEHE!
Grapes say WOOHOO!
A banana says HEEHEE!
An orange says HUH?
YA'LL AIN'T FROM AROUND HERE,
ARE YA?
Zoey says NOW HERE'S
A QUESTION FROM ALYSSA.
Alyssa says CAN YOU GROW FOOD
IN THE CITY?
Zoey says TO ANSWER
ALYSSA'S QUESTION,
I'M MEETING NICHOLAS TAYLOR,
A PLANT SCIENCE MANAGER
WHO WORKS AT A FARM.
Zoey stands in front of a big building.
She says UH... WHERE'S THE FARM?
THESE ARE JUST BIG OLD
FACTORY BUILDINGS.
Nicholas says HEY, ZOEY!
I'M UP HERE.
Zoey says OH, THERE YOU ARE.
HI, NICHOLAS.
Nicholas stands in a glass greenhouse on top of a building. He is in his early thirties, clean-shaven with brown hair. He wears a blue T-shirt.
Nicholas says HEY,
WELCOME TO LUFA FARMS,
THE WORLD'S FIRST COMMERCIAL
ROOFTOP GREENHOUSE.
Zoey says WOAH! YOU REALLY CAN
GROW FOOD IN THE CITY.
BUT WHAT IS YOUR FARM
DOING ON THE ROOF?
Nicholas says GOOD QUESTION.
WHAT HAPPENS IS,
MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE
FILLING UP ALL THE SPACES
AROUND THE CITIES,
AND WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF LAND.
WHAT WE DID WAS,
RATHER THAN HAVE A FARM
OUTSIDE THE CITY FAR AWAY, WHERE
WE'D HAVE TO BRING FOOD IN,
WE BROUGHT THE FARM
RIGHT INTO THE CITY.
NOW, BECAUSE THERE'S SO MANY
BUILDINGS, THEY DECIDED
TO USE AREAS THAT WERE NOT
BEING USED BY THE PEOPLE,
WHICH IS ON TOP OF THE ROOFS.
WHAT'S COOL ABOUT BEING ON TOP
OF A ROOF IS THAT YOU CAPTURE
ALL OF THAT SUN THAT WOULD
NORMALLY BE HITTING THE ROOF,
BUT NOW IT'S HITTING THE
CUCUMBERS AND HELPING THEM GROW.
HERE'S ONE OF OUR LEBANESE
CUCUMBERS. WANT TO TRY IT?
Zoey says YOU MEAN PICK IT OFF THE TREE?
Nicholas says YEAH. GO FOR IT.
Zoey says WITHOUT WASHING IT?
Nicholas says YOU DON'T HAVE TO.
WE DON'T USE ANY SYNTHETIC
PESTICIDES HERE.
Zoey says OH! NO POISONOUS CHEMICALS
TO KILL THE BUGS? COOL.
She tastes a cucumber and says MMM... THAT'S REALLY GOOD.
Nicholas says WHEN YOU GROW
VEGGIES REALLY CLOSE
TO WHERE THE PEOPLE
ARE PICKING IT UP,
YOU CAN PICK IT
AS FRESH AS POSSIBLE,
SO IT'S SUPER-GOOD
AND PACKED WITH NUTRIENTS.
Zoey says SO WHEN FOOD HAS TO
TRAVEL A LONG TIME TO GET HERE,
IT LOSES ITS FLAVOR.
Nicholas says ABSOLUTELY.
Zoey says AND NICHOLAS TELLS ME
THAT, WHEN FOOD TRAVELS FAR
TO GET TO US, A LOT OF IT
SPOILS AND IS WASTED.
AND ALSO THAT TRANSPORTING IT
MEANS BURNING A LOT OF FUEL.
THAT CAUSES POLLUTION.
HEY, CAN I HELP YOU
PLANT SOMETHING?
Nicholas says WANNA PLANT SOME LETTUCE?
Zoey says SURE.
Nicholas says ALL RIGHT.
LET'S DO IT!
SO WE'RE GOING TO BE PLANTING
SOME BUTTERHEAD LETTUCE.
THEY'RE PROBABLY GETTING
A LITTLE ANGRY,
SITTING IN THIS TRAY.
BECAUSE WE PROBABLY SHOULD'VE
PLANTED THEM A COUPLE DAYS AGO.
SO WHAT'S COOL ABOUT THIS SYSTEM
IS THAT WE CAN GROW
A LOT OF LETTUCE REALLY CLOSE
TOGETHER, SUPER-EFFICIENTLY.
Zoey says LOOK, A LITTLE BUG.
THAT REMINDS ME OF A QUESTION
THAT I GOT FROM AMBER.
Amber says IS BUG POISON ON PLANTS
BAD FOR PEOPLE?
Nicholas says IN FARMS, PEOPLE
CAN USE A LOT OF BUG POISON
IN THE FORM OF PESTICIDES.
AND IT HAS BEEN SHOWN TO BE
KIND OF ROUGH FOR PEOPLE,
WHICH IS WHY
MOST PEOPLE SUGGEST
THAT YOU ALWAYS WASH
YOUR FRUITS AND VEGGIES.
BUT WE DON'T USE
ANY SYNTHETIC PESTICIDES HERE.
SO WE FIGHT BUGS WITH BUGS.
RIGHT HERE IN FRONT OF US,
WE HAVE A LOT OF BAD GUY BUGS
CALLED APHIDS.
THEY'RE EATING OUR PEPPERS.
ONE APHID, IN ABOUT ONE DAY,
CAN MAKE TEN MORE APHIDS.
AND THOSE TEN MAKE TEN.
AND THOSE TEN MAKE ANOTHER TEN.
Zoey laughs.
Nicholas continues AND THEN THE PLANT IS JUST
COMPLETELY COVERED.
SO WHAT WE USE TO FIGHT
THESE BUGS IS MORE BUGS.
Zoey says WHAT?
Nicholas opens a bag. Zoey looks inside of it.
Nicholas says IN THIS CASE...
Zoey says WOAH! LADYBUGS!
Nicholas says LADYBUGS.
THAT'S RIGHT.
BUT THESE GUYS,
THEY'RE NOT GONNA HARM US.
THEY'RE NOT INTERESTED
IN ME AT ALL.
Zoey laughs.
Nicholas continues IF ANYTHING, THEY'RE PROBABLY
CONFUSED ABOUT MY ARM HAIR.
Zoey says WOAH!
Zoey laughs.
Nicholas says SO THEY'RE GONNA CRAWL AROUND,
AND THEY'RE GONNA LOOK
FOR THESE APHIDS
ON THESE LEAVES.
Zoey says IT TICKLES.
Zoey laughs.
Nicholas says LADYBUG HIGH FIVE.
ARE YOU READY?
Zoey says NO, I'M GOOD. NO,
YOU'RE GONNA SQUISH THEM!
Nicholas laughs.
Nicholas says SO ALL THESE GUYS
ARE GONNA HANG OUT HERE,
BECAUSE THIS IS THE BEST
PLACE IN TOWN FOR LADYBUGS.
Zoey says YEAH, BECAUSE THEY EAT
THE APHIDS.
IT'S EATING ONE NOW!
Nicholas says THAT'S RIGHT.
BUT THEY DON'T JUST EAT APHIDS.
THEY EAT ALL SORTS
OF OTHER LITTLE PESTS.
THEY'RE KINDA LIKE THE BIG BOSS
COMPARED TO ALL THE OTHER BUGS.
Zoey says THAT'S CRAZY.
Nicholas says YEAH.
Zoey says THEY'RE SO SMALL.
Nicholas says THEY DON'T HAVE A TOUGH NAME,
BUT THEY'RE ONE OF
THE TOUGHEST SPECIES WE HAVE.
HERE, YOU WANNA PUT THAT OUT?
Zoey says SURE.
Zoey hangs a small cardboard box with ladybugs in a plant.
Nicholas says THAT'S IT.
PERFECT.
Zoey says GOOD JOB,
LITTLE LADYBUG.
Nicholas says THIS IS A SWEET
PEPPER. WANNA PICK IT?
Zoey says SURE.
Zoey laughs.
Nicholas says THERE YOU GO.
VEGETABLES YOU CAN EAT
THE SAME DAY THEY WERE PICKED.
Zoey says FROM A FARM
IN THE CITY.
ON A ROOFTOP.
THANKS, NICHOLAS.
A chicken clucks.
Back at the attic, Zoey says THIS IS SO EXCITING.
I HAVE FRESH VEGETABLES NOW.
AND WITH THE EGGS
FROM THE CHICKEN,
MY LUNCH IS REALLY STARTING
TO COME TOGETHER.
BUT YOU DON'T HAVE
TO GET SOMEONE ELSE
TO GROW YOUR VEGGIES.
YOU CAN GROW THEM YOURSELF
BY PLANTING SEEDS
IN YOUR BACKYARD GARDEN
OR IN WINDOW BOXES.
YOU CAN EVEN GROW NEW VEGGIES
FROM OLD LEFTOVERS.
MY FRIENDS TRIED IT OUT.
In an animation, Zoey holds a purple balloon that reads "The Experiment."
Zoey says ANDELAINE AND VIVIAN FOUND OUT
THAT YOU CAN GROW
FRESH VEGETABLES FROM
KITCHEN SCRAPS LIKE THESE.
Andelaine and Vivian stand in a kitchen. Vivian has long light brown hair and wears a green T-shirt. Andelaine ha short light brown hair and wears a dress.
Vivian says WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
Andelaine says I'M GONNA TRY AND PUT THIS
PIECE OF CELERY IN WATER
AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
Zoey says YOU TAKE THE BOTTOM PART
FROM A CELERY BUNCH
AND SIT IT IN SOME WARM WATER
IN THE SUN.
Vivian says LET'S WAIT A COUPLE
OF WEEKS AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
Andelaine says OKAY.
Zoey says IT GROWS NEW LEAVES.
TAKE THE SPROUTING CELERY
AND PLANT IT IN SOME EARTH.
TRY TAKING THE SEEDS FROM
INSIDE A PEPPER PLANT.
PLANT THEM IN SOIL,
AND GIVE THEM
A LITTLE BIT OF WATER.
PUT YOUR POTS IN THE SUN,
AND WAIT FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS.
LOOK IT UP. YOU CAN DO THIS
WITH MANY KINDS OF VEGGIES.
The girls place the plants they grew from vegetables on a table.
Vivien says I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS WORKED.
Andelaine says I KNOW!
Zoey says SO THERE YOU GO.
PLANT YOUR TABLE SCRAPS AND
HAVE YOUR OWN INDOOR MINI-FARM.
NOW THAT'S LOCAL PRODUCE.
The girls say BYE, ZOEY!
Zoey says BYE, BYE.
The veggies say BYE! BYE! BYE! BYE!
Zoey laughs.
Zoey says THESE VEGGIES HAVE HAD
SOME TIME TO GROW.
AND LOOK AT THEM NOW.
LOOKS LIKE I CAN ADD
SOME CELERY TO MY EGG SALAD.
THAT MEANS I HAVE EVERYTHING
I NEED TO MAKE A SANDWICH.
AND I CAN FINALLY
ANSWER THE QUESTION
THAT STARTED OFF THE SHOW.
Sara says IF THERE WERE NO GROCERY
STORES, WHERE WOULD WE GET FOOD?
(piano fanfare)
Zoey plays keyboards as bright orange letters appear next to her. They read "The Big Answer Is."
Zoey says WE CAN GROW IT OURSELVES
OR BUY IT FROM LOCAL FARMERS.
IN FACT, IT LOOKS LIKE
WE'LL BE DOING THIS MORE
AND MORE IN THE FUTURE.
GROWING FOOD CLOSE TO HOME CAN
HELP AVOID SOME BIG PROBLEMS,
LIKE WASTE, POISONOUS
PESTICIDES, AND AIR POLLUTION.
PLUS, THE FOOD IS HEALTHIER
AND TASTES WAY BETTER.
THAT ROOFTOP FARM
I VISITED
IS JUST ONE AMAZING WAY
TO GROW FOOD IN THE CITY.
THERE ARE KIDS PLANTING GARDENS
IN THEIR SCHOOLYARDS,
AND COMMUNITY FOOD GARDENS ARE
POPPING UP ALL OVER THE PLACE.
PEOPLE HAVE EVEN TURNED
SWIMMING POOLS INTO FISH FARMS.
IT'S AMAZING WHAT YOU CAN GROW
IF YOU GET CREATIVE.
Fast clips show what Zoey tells.
Zoey says NOW, ALL I HAVE TO DO
IS MAKE MY SANDWICH.
WELL, I FORGOT TO GROW WHEAT
TO MAKE BREAD.
GOOD THING MY MOM PICKED UP
A LOAF OF BREAD
FROM THE LOCAL
FARMER'S MARKET.
THAT STILL KINDA COUNTS,
RIGHT?
(music plays)
Zoey makes herself a sandwich.
Zoey says THIS IS THE BEST HOMEGROWN
SANDWICH I'VE EVER EATEN!
PRINCESS PUMPERNICKEL...
(chicken clucks)
CLUCKY...
YOUR EGGS ARE DELICIOUS.
GREAT JOB, GUYS.
A chicken says THANKS, ZOEY.
A caption reads "Thanks to everyone who helped me out, Zoey Siewert."
As the end credits roll, Zoey sings
SEE THOSE FISH STICKS
ON YOUR PLATE?
THEY'RE MADE FROM HADDOCK,
SOLE OR COD
THAT CANDY FLOSS IS MADE
WITH YAK HAIR
ALL BALLED UP
INTO A WAD
WHAT? IT'S MADE OF SUGAR? OH!
WELL, IF YOU'RE
EVER FEEDING
AND WONDERING
WHAT YOU'RE EATING
COME SING THIS SONG
WITH ME
