[Upbeat music plays]
A female announcer says, WELCOME TO
TVOKIDS POWER HOUR OF LEARNING.
TODAY’S PRIMARY LESSON, BRAINSTORMING.
Text reads “TVO Kids Power Hour of Learning. Teacher Edition. Today’s primary lesson, brainstorming.”
Teacher Kristy sits beside a small round wooden table. She wears a blue tee-shirt with the words “Be kind” written on it. Kristy wears a bright blue and pink bow in her dark brown hair. Behind her on the wall, a poster reads “Keep calm and teach on.” A corkboard has “Welcome” pinned on it.
Text reads “Primary one to three. Teacher Kristy.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Kristy says, HI, MY NAME IS KRISTY,
AND I'M REALLY EXCITED
TO BE YOUR TEACHER HERE TODAY ON
TVOKIDS POWER HOUR OF LEARNING.
TODAY WE'RE GOING TO BE
DOING A LESSON
ALL ABOUT THE BRAINSTORMING
PART OF WRITING.
WHENEVER WE WRITE, ONE OF
THE FIRST THINGS WE NEED TO DO
IS COME UP
WITH OUR IDEAS,
AND BRAINSTORMING
IS A GREAT WAY TO DO THAT.
TODAY, FOR YOUR WORK,
YOU'LL NEED SOME PAPER
OR A NOTEBOOK TO WRITE IN,
A PENCIL AND MAYBE SOME COLOURS
TO HELP HIGHLIGHT YOUR IDEAS.
SO, GRAB YOUR MATERIALS
AND LET'S GET TO WORK.
TODAY WE'RE GOING TO BE
FOCUSING ON BRAINSTORMING,
AND WHEN WE BRAINSTORM,
THERE ARE SOME DIFFERENT THINGS
WE NEED TO THINK ABOUT
BEFORE WE WRITE.
THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT THINGS
TO THINK ABOUT
BEFORE WE GET STARTED
ARE WHAT OUR TOPIC
IS GOING TO BE--
SO WHAT WE'RE ACTUALLY
GOING TO WRITE ABOUT--
AND THEN WHAT OUR FORM
IS GOING TO BE.
WHAT TYPE OF PIECE OF WRITING
ARE WE GONNA DO?
ARE WE GOING TO WRITE A LETTER,
ARE WE GOING TO DO A JOURNAL,
ARE WE GOING
TO WRITE A POEM?
ALL OF THOSE ARE THE DIFFERENT
FORMS WE CAN WRITE.
AS A BIT OF A WARM-UP
FOR OUR BRAINSTORMING,
I'M GOING TO ASK YOU
TO CLOSE YOUR EYES
AND I'M GOING TO ASK YOU
TO IMAGINE YOUR DREAM SNACK.
SO, HAVE YOUR EYES CLOSED,
AND I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT
THE BEST SNACK
YOU COULD POSSIBLY HAVE.
SO, I WANT YOU TO THINK
ABOUT...WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?
SO, I WANT YOU TO PICTURE
THAT DREAM SNACK IN YOUR HEAD.
I WANT YOU TO IMAGINE WHAT WOULD
YOUR DREAM SNACK TASTE LIKE?
IS IT SWEET?
IS IT SALTY?
CAN YOU SMELL IT?
WHAT WOULD THAT DREAM SNACK
SMELL LIKE?
KEEP YOUR EYES CLOSED
AND BREATHE IN.
[Inhaling]
WHAT DO YOU THINK
THAT DREAM SNACK WOULD BE?
LET'S OPEN OUR EYES
AND I HOPE,
WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED,
YOU WERE ABLE TO VISUALIZE
AND COME UP WITH
A REALLY GOOD IDEA
OF WHAT YOUR BRAIN--
YOUR SNACK MIGHT LOOK LIKE
WITH YOUR BRAINSTORM.
NOT A BRAIN SNACK.
THOUGH, I GUESS ALL FOOD
HELPS OUR BRAIN WORK.
WHEN WE TAKE TIME TO THINK
ABOUT OUR IDEAS ON A TOPIC,
IT'S LIKE WARMING UP
FOR WRITING.
IT'S LIKE WHEN WE EXERCISE,
WE STRETCH OUR BODIES
AND WE WARM UP OUR MUSCLES
BEFORE WE MOVE
SO WE DON'T GET HURT
AND SO WE WORK BETTER.
WHEN WE BRAINSTORM
AND WE WARM UP OUR BRAIN,
IT'S EASIER TO
COME UP WITH THE IDEAS
AND IT'S EASIER
TO GET OUR JOBS DONE.
IN THIS LEARNING ACTIVITY,
WE'RE GOING TO LOOK
AT A WHOLE BUNCH
OF DIFFERENT WAYS
YOU CAN BRAINSTORM
TO THINK OF A TOPIC
AND HOW YOU CAN RECORD
THOSE IDEAS FOR YOUR WRITING.
WE'RE GOING
TO START OFF TODAY
BY WATCHING AN EPISODE
OF SIXTEEN HUDSON.
IN THIS EPISODE,
THE CHARACTERS AREN'T WRITING,
BUT THEY DO HAVE
A PROBLEM TO SOLVE,
AND THE CHARACTERS
WORK TOGETHER
TO THINK OF DIFFERENT WAYS
TO SOLVE THEIR PROBLEM.
SO, WHILE YOU'RE WATCHING
THIS EPISODE OF SIXTEEN HUDSON,
I WANT YOU THINK ABOUT
HOW THESE CHARACTERS
ARE BRAINSTORMING
AND HOW THEY SHARE THEIR IDEAS
TO COME UP WITH THE SOLUTION
TO THEIR PROBLEM.
AND THERE'S MORE THAN ONE
PROBLEM IN THIS EPISODE
AND THERE'S MORE
THAN ONE TIME
THAT CHARACTERS
NEED TO BRAINSTORM.
SO, THINK ABOUT
HOW THEY'RE USING
THEIR BRAINSTORMING
STRATEGIES
AND HOW YOU COULD USE
A SIMILAR STRATEGY
WHEN YOU'RE DOING SOME WRITING
TO COME UP WITH IDEAS,
JUST LIKE THOSE CHARACTERS
ARE COMING UP WITH IDEAS
TO SOLVE THEIR PROBLEM.
SO, SIT BACK AND ENJOY
THIS EPISODE OF
SIXTEEN HUDSON
CALLED "STICK WITH IT",
AND I'LL SEE YOU BACK
IN JUST A FEW MINUTES.
Child says, WHEE!
TVO Kids logo and BigBadBoo Studios logos appear.
[Giggling]
Animated birds fly past a building.
[Happy music plays]
Voice sings, WHO'S THAT KNOCKING AT MY DOOR?
RACE YOU TO THE BOTTOM FLOOR
Children run down stairs.
Voice sings, WHO'S THAT PLAYING
HIDE AND SEEK?
COUNT TO TEN
AND DON'T YOU PEEK
Children run to a park. A boy skips rope. A girl rides a skateboard.
Voice sings, LET'S GET OUTSIDE AND PLAY
CREATE A BRAND NEW GAME
OR SEARCH BENEATH THE STAIRS
FOR HIDDEN TREASURE THERE
SIXTEEN HUDSON
THAT'S WHERE MY FRIENDS
ARE WAITING
SIXTEEN HUDSON
Children ride on swings. They look in displays in a bakery.
WON'T YOU COME ALONG?
SIXTEEN HUDSON
WHERE EVERYBODY'S WELCOME
SIXTEEN HUDSON
A rainbow arches over the building.
The voice sings, SIXTEEN HUDSON
THAT'S WHERE I BELONG
Text reads “Sixteen Hudson.” Created by Shabnam Rezaei & Aly Jetha.
“Stick to it.”
Eddie looks at a hockey player.
Eddie says, NO. NO. NO.
Toys and clothes lie scattered across a bedroom.
Eddie yells,YES! FOUND IT!
Eddie triumphantly holds up a hockey stick.
Eddie’s mom carries a box as she walks into his room.
She says, EDDIE, YOU DUMPED OUT
YOUR WHOLE CLOSET!
Eddie says, I KNOW!
ISN'T IT GREAT?
BEST OF ALL, I FOUND MY
JORDAN NOLAN HOCKEY STICK.
His mom says, NICE JOB FINDING
SOMETHING IN THIS ROOM.
Eddie says, IT'S FOR SHOW AND SHARE
AT SCHOOL!
SEE? JORDAN NOLAN
AUTOGRAPHED IT HIMSELF!
HE SHOOTS--
[Swoop]
Eddie swings the hockey stick and loses his balance.
He says, WAH-UNGH!
HE SCORES!
[Chuckling]
Eddie’s mom says, THAT'S GREAT, HONEY.
BUT REMEMBER, I ASKED YOU
TO FIND SOME STUFF
FOR THE YARD SALE
THIS AFTERNOON.
Eddie says, I DID!
Eddie gestures to a few toys in a box. His mom arches an eyebrow.
Eddie says, OKAY,
I'LL FIND SOME MORE STUFF
RIGHT AFTER I PUT TOGETHER
MY SHOW AND SHARE.
FOR SCHOOL.
His moms says, WELL PLAYED, EDWARD.
YOUR MARKERS
ARE IN THE KITCHEN.
Eddie leans his hockey stick against a wall. He grabs paper and runs out of his room, slamming the door behind him. The hockey stick falls on top of the donation box.
A poster features pictures of a hockey player.
Eddie says, SEE? JORDAN NOLAN
IS MY FAVE PLAYER EVER!
HE WON THE STANLEY CUP
NOT ONCE BUT TWO TIMES!
Eddie and Sam look at the poster.
Sam says, WOW!
THAT'S PRETTY NEAT--
Eddie says, DO YOU KNOW
HE'S LIKE,
ONE OF THE MOST
POWERFUL PLAYERS
IN THE WHOLE LEAGUE?
PLUS, HIS AUTOGRAPH LOOKS
KINDA LIKE A BIRD IN FLIGHT,
JUST LIKE HOW HE SKATES!
WANNA SEE?
Sam exclaims, NO WAY!
YOU HAVE AN AUTOGRAPH--
Eddie says, BETTER!
AN ACTUAL, REAL-LIFE
AUTOGRAPHED STICK!
COME ON!
[Happy music plays]
Eddie opens his bedroom door. The hockey stick and box are gone.
Eddie says, PRESENTING--
HMM. I LEFT IT RIGHT HERE.
[Tense musical chord]
Sam says, COOL ROOM!
MY MOM MAKES ME
PICK UP MY STUFF.
[Suspenseful music plays]
Eddie digs through a pile of clothes and looks under his bed. He looks in a cupboard.
[Squeak]
Eddie says, WAIT A MINUTE.
OH, NO. MY MOM- SHE TOOK IT
TO THE YARD SALE! AGH!
Eddie’s mom arranges items on a table in front of a building.
Eddie says, MOM!
DID YOU TAKE MY JORDAN NOLAN
HOCKEY STICK?
Eddie’s mom says, I DON'T KNOW.
I JUST GRABBED
YOUR BOX AND LEFT.
I WAS IN SUCH A RUSH.
Eddie flops down on a bean bag.
[Sigh]
His mom says, BUT IF I DID,
I'M SORRY, HONEY.
MAYBE IT HASN'T SOLD YET.
Eddie looks hopeful as he says, YOU THINK?
His mom points and says, THE SPORTS EQUIPMENT
IS OVER--
[Footsteps running]
Eddie says, BOBBY ORR PLAYOFF JERSEY?
[Toss]
Eddie scoffs, GRETZKY ROOKIE CARD?
[Toss]
Eddie says, ORIGINAL BOBBY CLARKE
FRONT TEETH.
[Toss]
Eddie says, BUT NO JORDAN NOLAN STICK.
Sam says, WAIT- LOOK!
Sam picks up a lamp.
A man with glasses says,
BEAUTY, EH?
FIFTY CENTS
AND SHE'S YOURS.
Sam and Eddie sigh.
[Energetic music plays]
Children knock on apartment doors look and gesture like they are playing hockey. They shake their heads as residents bring out a hockey stick, broom and toothpick.
[Knock]
[Knock]
[Knock]
Eddie pushes open a door. His mom looks up from a computer.
[Creak]
Eddie’s mom asks, ANY LUCK?
Eddie says, WE ASKED EVERYBODY,
AND NO ONE'S SEEN IT.
[Upbeat music plays]
His mom says, WELL,
I HAVE ONE MORE IDEA.
[Typing]
Sam and Eddie sit in Eddie’s messy room.
Eddie says, IT'S OVER.
I'VE LOST MY JORDAN NOLAN
HOCKEY STICK FOREVER,
AND NOW I HAVE
NOTHING TO SHOW
FOR SHOW AND SHARE.
Sam says, I DON'T KNOW.
THAT LOOKS PRETTY GOOD.
Sam looks at the Jordan Nolan poster Eddie created.
Eddie says, I GUESS.
BUT WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL
ABOUT A BUNCH
OF CLIPPINGS AND PICTURES?
ANYBODY CAN DO THAT.
Sam says, I GUESS.
Eddie says, IT WAS THE STICK
THAT MADE IT SPECIAL.
[Upbeat music plays]
Eddie says, I MEAN,
THAT'S WHAT HE USED
TO SCORE HIS FIRST EVER
PLAYOFF GOAL.
Eddie imitates swinging a hockey stick and falls.
Eddie says, WAH-- UNGH.
[Thump]
Eddie says, COMMITMENT, PERSEVERANCE,
TEAMWORK-
THAT'S WHAT HOCKEY'S
ALL ABOUT,
AND I HAD THE STICK THAT HELPED
TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.
Sam says, WHOA.
Eddie says, SEE WHAT I MEAN?
Sam says, YEAH, TOTALLY!
AND THAT WAS AWESOME!
YOU DON'T NEED SOME STICK
TO TELL THAT STORY.
YOU JUST NEED YOU!
ALL FIRED UP LIKE THAT!
Eddie says, I GUESS.
THAT'D BE THE SHARE PART,
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE SHOW?
Sam says, YOU CAN SHOW ME!
Eddie says, HUH?
Sam says, SAM WU, SUPERFAN!
I'LL FLASH
THE GOAL LIGHT,
BUZZ THE BUZZER,
ACT LIKE A MASCOT
AND LEAVE THE CROWD
IN HEART-THUMPIN' CHEERS!
COMMITMENT, PERSEVERANCE, TEAMWORK!
JUST LIKE JORDAN NOLAN.
Eddie smiles and says, AND IF HE CAN MAKE IT
ALL THE WAY TO THE NHL,
I GUESS I CAN MAKE IT
THROUGH SHOW AND SHARE.
LET'S DO THIS!
[Upbeat music plays]
Eddie grabs his poster.
Spotlights move back and forth across on the ice in an rink. A man holds a microphone.
A male announcer says,
HELLO, CANADA AND HOCKEY FANS
IN THE UNITED STATES
AND NEWFOUNDLAND!
Jordan Nolan skates and smiles.
Sam shines a flashlight on Jordan Nolan’s picture.
Eddie says, PRESENTING, JORDAN NOLAN.
HE'S WON HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS
AND HELPS OUT KIDS
WITH HIS HOCKEY SCHOOL.
AND HE'S A PROUD
OJIBWE CANADIAN.
RAISED IN GARDEN RIVER
FIRST NATIONS,
JORDAN'S DAD WAS
A COACH IN THE LEAGUE,
Sam grunts as he jumps on a desk.
[Grunt]
Eddie says, AND HIS BROTHER
WAS A PRO, TOO.
(Plays hockey music on organ)
Eddie says, ON THE WAY TO THE TOP,
HE'D THINK ABOUT HIS ROOTS
AND IT HELPED KEEP HIM STRONG.
AND NOW HE GIVES BACK.
Sam walks around a classroom with a flashing red light on his head.
Sam chants, JORDAN,
JORDAN, JORDAN!
Eddie says, WITH THREE NOLAN'S
FIRST NATION HOCKEY SCHOOL,
HE AND HIS FAMILY
TEACH HOCKEY SKILLS
AND ALSO HOW TO LIVE
A POSITIVE AND HEALTHY LIFE.
Sam chants, JORDAN! JORDAN!
Eddie says, UH, THIS IS THE PART WHERE I WAS
GONNA SHOW YOU A STICK, BUT--
Eddie’s mom says, EDDIE!
Eddie’s mom stands at the classroom door.
Eddie says, MOM?
I'M KINDA IN THE MIDDLE OF--
His mom says, YOU ARE NEVER GONNA
BELIEVE THIS.
I'VE GOT A MESSAGE
FOR YOU.
Eddie’s mom throws a USB to Eddie’s teacher. His teacher hooks it up to a projector and Jordan Nolan appears on a screen.
Jordan Nolan says, HEY, EDDIE.
JORDAN NOLAN HERE.
WHAT'S UP?
[Gasping]
[Children whisper]
Jordan says, I JUST WANTED TO SAY,
THANKS FOR YOUR
GREAT PRESENTATION.
IT'S FANS LIKE YOU
WHO INSPIRE ME
TO GO OUT THERE AND GIVE
MY ALL IN EVERY GAME.
SORRY YOU LOST
YOUR HOCKEY STICK,
BUT THANKS FOR THINKIN' OF ME
FOR SHOW AND SHARE.
AND LIKE I ALWAYS SAY,
IF YOU'RE GONNA
DO SOMETHIN',
DO IT ALL THE WAY.
Jordan puts a hand over his heart.
[Thump]
Jordan says, BAAMAAPII, BROTHER.
Eddie says, BAAMAAPII.
[Cheering]
Eddie smiles.
Eddie and his mom walk on a sidewalk.
[Footsteps]
Eddie says, THANKS, MOM!
THIS JUST MIGHT GO DOWN IN THE
SHOW AND SHARE HALL OF FAME!
His mom says, WELL, I HAD TO
DO SOMETHING.
I WAS SO PROUD OF YOU
WORKING SO HARD,
EVEN AFTER
YOUR STICK GOT--
WELL, LOST.
Eddie says, GO AHEAD. SAY IT.
I LOST THE STICK.
I GET IT.
I'LL KEEP MY ROOM CLEANER
FROM NOW ON. PROMISE.
His mom says, MAYBE I'LL GET YOU
TO WRITE THAT DOWN,
AND AUTOGRAPH IT.
[Suspenseful music playing]
[Running footsteps]
Eddie runs to a garden.
Eddie says, MOM!
MY JORDAN NOLAN STICK!
[Gasp]
His mom says, BUT IT'S HOLDING UP
SOMEONE'S TOMATOES!
Eddie says, WELL, LOTS OF THINGS
CAN DO THAT.
The man wearing glasses says, TWENTY-FIVE CENTS,
FINAL OFFER.
[Jingling of coins]
Eddie says, DEAL!
Eddie carries the lamp.
[Laughing]

Kristy stands beside a large piece of paper. On the paper it reads “Steps of the writing process. One: Prewrite has a thought bubble drawn beside it. Two: Drafting has a pencil drawn beside it. Three: Revising has a bandaid drawn beside it. Four: Editing has an eraser drawn beside it. Five: Publishing has a book drawn beside it.”
Kristy says, I HOPE YOU HAD FUN WATCHING THAT
EPISODE OF SIXTEEN HUDSON
WHERE EDDIE LOST
HIS HOCKEY STICK.
Text beneath Kristy reads “Primary one to three. Teacher Kristy.”
She says, DURING THE EPISODE,
WE SAW A LOT OF DIFFERENT
BRAINSTORMING HAPPENING.
THE KIDS WEREN'T
BRAINSTORMING FOR WRITING,
BUT THEY WERE BRAINSTORMING
TO SOLVE A PROBLEM.
WE SAW THE KIDS THOUGHT--
BRAINSTORMED
AND THOUGHT
THEY COULD GO AROUND
AND TALK TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE
ABOUT THE HOCKEY STICK.
EDDIE HAD TO COME UP WITH
A WAY TO SOLVE HIS PROBLEM
WHEN THE STICK
COULDN'T BE FOUND.
HE HAD TO BRAINSTORM IDEAS
ON HOW HE COULD DO
HIS PRESENTATION WITHOUT IT,
AND FINALLY, EDDIE'S MOM
DID SOME BRAINSTORMING
AND THOUGHT OF WAYS
THAT SHE COULD HELP EDDIE
WITH HIS PRESENTATION WHEN
HIS HOCKEY STICK WAS MISSING.
IN THE END, WE KNOW HE FOUND IT,
AND IN A PRETTY FUNNY PLACE.
WHEN WE'RE WRITING,
THE BRAINSTORMING STAGE
IS HOW WE GET STARTED
AND THE PROBLEM WE'RE TRYING
TO SOLVE IS GETTING IDEAS
FOR WHAT WE CAN WRITE ABOUT.
THE BRAINSTORMING IS PART
OF THE WRITING PROCESS,
AND LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT
OUR WRITING PROCESS STEPS.
SO, THESE ARE ALL OF THE STEPS
OF THE WRITING PROCESS.
THERE ARE FIVE STEPS
OF THE WRITING PROCESS.
WE DON'T ALWAYS GO
ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR, FIVE.
SOMETIMES WE GO
ONE, TWO, THREE,
WE REVISE, WE GO BACK AND FORTH
AND KEEP MAKING CHANGES
BEFORE WE FINALLY
PUBLISH OUR PIECE.
THE FIRST STEP, THOUGH,
IS WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON TODAY,
AND THAT IS ALWAYS
THE PRE-WRITING STEP.
YOU CAN'T WRITE
IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN IDEA.
SO, MY LITTLE GRAPHIC
IS A THOUGHT BUBBLE,
BECAUSE THE PRE-WRITING STEP
IS WHEN WE COME UP
WITH OUR IDEAS
OF WHAT WE'RE GOING
TO WRITE ABOUT.
SOMETIMES THIS IS REALLY,
REALLY EASY.
SOMETIMES YOUR TEACHER MIGHT
ACTUALLY GIVE YOU AN IDEA
OF WHAT YOU'RE GOING
TO WRITE ABOUT
AND TELL YOU
SOMETHING SPECIFIC
SO IT'S NOT
TOO MUCH BRAINSTORMING,
WE HAVE NOTHING
TO WRITE ABOUT.
OUR SECOND STEP
IS THE DRAFTING STEP.
THIS IS WHEN WE TAKE OUR IDEAS
THAT WE CAME UP WITH
AND WE TURN THEM INTO OUR
FIRST COPY OF WHAT WE'RE DOING.
SO, IF WE'RE WRITING A POEM,
WE'RE GOING TO TAKE
OUR IDEAS THAT WE PRE-WROTE
AND WRITE A FIRST TRY
OF THE POEM OR A JOURNAL
OR A LETTER OR WHATEVER IT IS
WE'RE WRITING.
ONCE WE HAVE
OUR DRAFT DONE,
WE'RE NOT FINISHED, BECAUSE
WHAT IF WE MADE A MISTAKE?
WHAT IF
IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE?
WHAT IF IT'S JUST
NOT VERY GOOD?
THAT'S WHEN WE'RE GOING TO
GO BACK TO THE REVISION STEP.
WE'RE GOING
TO READ EVERYTHING OVER
AND WE'RE GOING TO TRY
AND MAKE OUR WRITING BETTER.
AFTER WE THINK WE'VE GOT
OUR BEST WRITING,
WE MOVE ON
TO THE EDITING STEP,
WHEN WE'RE GOING TO LOOK
FOR PUNCTUATION AND SPELLING
AND MAKE SURE ALL OF THAT
IS OUR BEST.
AND THEN FINALLY,
IF WE'VE GOT A PIECE OF WRITING
THAT WE THINK
IS WORTH SHARING,
WE MIGHT TAKE THE TIME
TO PUBLISH IT.
WE MIGHT RE-COPY IT, WE MIGHT
TYPE IT ON THE COMPUTER,
WE MIGHT TURN IT INTO A BOOK,
TO MAKE IT OUR VERY BEST.
Kristy points to Prewrite on her list.
She continues, TODAY IS ALL ABOUT
OUR PRE-WRITING.
SO, WE'RE GOING TO COME UP
WITH DIFFERENT STRATEGIES
AND DIFFERENT WAYS WE CAN
BRAINSTORM OUR IDEAS.
BEFORE WE DO THAT,
WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A FEW
MINUTES TO GET UP AND MOVE,
SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SPACE
FOR YOUR BODY BREAK.
A BODY BREAK
IS A GREAT STRATEGY
TO HELP GET
YOUR BRAIN FLOWING,
GET YOUR BLOOD FLOWING,
AND GET READY
TO HAVE IDEAS AND WORK
AFTER YOU'VE BEEN SITTING
FOR A WHILE.
SO, MAKE SURE
YOU GET UP AND MOVE,
AND I'LL SEE YOU BACK
IN A FEW MINUTES
WHEN WE'RE ALL READY
TO LEARN.
Animated sun shines.
(Hip hop music plays)
Graffiti art covers a wall. A boy with black spiky hair appears and drops to the ground. He wears a red plaid jacket over a grey hoodie.
The boys says, YO, WHAT'S UP?
WHAT'S GOIN' ON, MOVERS?
TODAY WE'RE GONNA BE LEARNING
ONE OF THE TASTIEST DANCES
OF ALL TIME.
SAY HELLO TO THE VEGGIE PULL.
HEY!
The boy moves his arm in a circular motion.
[Needle scratching a record sound]
The boy dances.
He says, YOU'RE GONNA TAKE A STEP
TO THE SIDE,
AND A SIDE, AND A SIDE,
THEN YOUR LAST MOVE,
YOU'RE GONNA KICK IT UP,
THEN DOWN.
He brings his knee up and then puts his foot back down.
The boy demonstrates, ONE MORE TIME.
SIDE, AND SIDE, AND SIDE.
KICK IT UP AND DOWN,
AND SIDE!
AND SIDE, AND SIDE.
KICK IT UP AND DOWN.
YOU GUYS KNOW WHAT
THE FEET ARE DOING.
LET'S CHECK IN
WITH THE HANDS.
TAKE YOUR BASKET
AND GATHER YOUR VEGGIES,
AND VEGGIES.
WRAP YOUR ARMS
AROUND YOUR BASKET,
THEN PULL.
ONE MORE TIME.
GRAB YOUR VEGGIES,
GRAB YOUR VEGGIES,
BASKET, AND PULL.
YOU GUYS JUST LEARNED
THE VEGGIE PULL.
WITH THE HANDS
AND FEET TOGETHER.
MUSIC AND FRIENDS?
Laura and a tall boy with glasses dance behind the boy with spiky hair.
They do the veggie pull as they dance.
The boy with spiky hair says, FIVE, SIX, SEVEN!
GRAB YOUR VEGGIES,
HIT, HIT,
AND CIRCLE ARMS, HA!
AND KEEP IT GOING,
GUYS.
HERE WE GO! WOO!
LAST TIME, GUYS!
HEH!
NICE! WOO!
GUESS WHAT, GUYS?
YOU JUST MOVED WITH MICKEEY.
SEE YA!
[Needle scratching a record sound]
An animated sun shines.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kristy sits beside the little round table.
Text beneath her reads “Primary one to three. Teacher Kristy.”
Kristy says, I HOPE YOU ENJOYED
THAT BODY BREAK.
YOU GOT A LITTLE BIT OF ENERGY
BACK AFTER YOU MOVED YOUR BODY.
MOVING OUR BODIES ALWAYS
HELPS OUR BRAINS WORK BETTER,
SO BODY BREAKS
ARE A GREAT TOOL.
IF YOU'RE HAVING
A LITTLE TROUBLE FOCUSING,
IF YOU MOVE AROUND
A LITTLE,
THAT'LL HELP YOU
GET READY TO GO.
WE'RE GOING TO BE WORKING
ON OUR FIRST BRAINSTORMING TOOL,
AND IT'S ONE OF MY VERY,
VERY FAVOURITES.
IT'S CALLED A HEART MAP.
A HEART MAP IS ONE OF
THE FIRST BRAINSTORMING TOOLS
I HAVE MY STUDENTS DO
IN MY CLASS EVERY YEAR,
AND WE KEEP THIS IN THE FRONT
OF OUR JOURNALS.
WHEN YOU LOOK AT A HEART MAP,
THERE'S ALL SORTS
OF DIFFERENT ONES,
BUT REALLY,
IT'S JUST A PIECE OF PAPER
WITH A GIANT HEART
IN THE MIDDLE.
Kristy holds up a piece of paper with a heart drawn on it.
Kristy says, SO, IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE
ANYTHING SPECIAL.
YOU COULD DRAW A HEART ON A PAGE
IN YOUR NOTEBOOK IF YOU WANT TO,
OR I'M SURE YOU COULD FIND A
HEART TO PRINT OUT SOMEWHERE
IF YOU'D LIKE TO.
INSIDE THE HEART MAP,
WE WRITE DOWN ABSOLUTELY
EVERYTHING WE CAN THINK ABOUT
THAT WE KEEP
INSIDE OF OUR HEART.
SO, THESE COULD BE
SPECIAL PEOPLE IN OUR LIVES
LIKE OUR FAMILY MEMBERS
AND OUR FRIENDS.
THESE COULD BE SPECIAL PLACES
WE LOVE TO GO TO
THAT MAKE US FEEL HAPPY
AND MAKE US FEEL SAFE.
IT COULD BE SPECIAL TOYS
WE HAVE
OR THINGS WE LIKE TO DO.
IT COULD BE OUR THINGS
WE LOVE AND CARE ABOUT
THAT ARE REALLY,
REALLY IMPORTANT TO US.
ANYTHING WE HOLD
INSIDE OF OUR HEART-
OUR HOBBIES, OUR PEOPLE.
OUR FAVOURITE BOOKS.
IT ALL GOES IN THERE,
AND WE TRY AND FILL IT UP
AS MUCH AS
WE POSSIBLY CAN.
AND THESE
ARE A GREAT TOOL
BECAUSE IF YOU MAKE
A HEART MAP
AND YOU PUT IT IN THE FRONT
OF YOUR JOURNAL
OR IN YOUR WRITER'S NOTEBOOK,
WHATEVER YOU USE,
WHENEVER YOU'RE STUCK
FOR AN IDEA,
YOU CAN GO BACK AND LOOK
FOR SOMETHING IN YOUR HEART MAP
THAT YOU HAVEN'T
WRITTEN ABOUT BEFORE.
SINCE THE HEART MAP
IS FILLED WITH THINGS
THAT WE CARE ABOUT
THAT ARE IMPORTANT,
THEY'RE ALL TOPICS WE USUALLY
HAVE A LOT TO SAY ABOUT
AND WE HAVE LOTS OF IDEAS
AND WE FIND THEM INTERESTING
AND EXCITING TO WRITE ABOUT.
SO, A HEART MAP IS A GREAT TOOL
IF YOU'VE NEVER DONE ONE BEFORE.
WE'RE GOING TO PRACTISE
MAKING A HEART MAP TOGETHER.
IN JUST A MINUTE,
YOU'RE GONNA WATCH AN EPISODE
OF RAVEN'S QUEST
ABOUT A BOY NAMED MALAKAI.
MALAKAI IS GOING TO TALK TO US
ALL ABOUT HIS LIFE,
THE THINGS HE LIKES TO DO,
THE PLACES HE LIKES TO GO.
HE'S GONNA TELL US
A LITTLE BIT
ABOUT ONE OF
HIS FAVOURITE FOODS.
AS YOU WATCH THIS EPISODE
WITH MALAKAI,
I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT,
IF YOU WERE MALAKAI
AND YOU WERE MAKING A HEART MAP,
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS
THAT YOU THINK
HE WOULD PUT IN THERE?
SO, WHAT ARE
SOME OF THE THINGS,
IF MALAKAI WERE
TO FILL UP A HEART MAP
WITH ALL OF THE THINGS
HE KEEPS IN HIS HEART,
WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?
KEEP YOUR NOTEBOOK HANDY
AND AS WE WATCH THE EPISODE,
JOT DOWN SOME IDEAS,
AND THEN WE'LL
BRAINSTORM TOGETHER
WHAT MALAKAI'S HEART MAP
MIGHT LOOK LIKE.
ENJOY THE EPISODE
OF RAVEN'S QUEST
AND I'LL SEE YOU BACK
IN JUST A FEW MINUTES.
Kristy smiles.
An animated sun shines.
Malakai dances. He wears colourful traditional regalia.
He smiles as he dances.
A male narrator says,
TODAY WE'RE VISITING MALAKAI.
HE'S A DANCER--
[Drum beat plays]
[Boots stomping]
The narrator says, HE'LL GO SHOOT SOME HOOPS.
Malakai shoots a basketball into a basketball net.
[Net rattling]
Malakai closes one eye as he aims his bow. His arrow hits near the centre of a target.
[Thunk]
The narrator says, HE'LL TAKE AIM
FOR A BULL'S-EYE--
Kids exclaim, WHOA!
A gloved hand ladles food into a Styrofoam takeaway container.
The narrator continues, AND CHECK OUT
HIS AUNTIE'S FOOD TRUCK!
Malakai reaches up to take the container from his auntie.
Malakai’s auntie says, THERE YOU GO,
THE FAMOUS INDIAN TACO.
Malakai bounces on one foot by a pink food truck.
A voice yells, LET'S GO!
[Cheerful music plays]
Animated mountains pop up on green hills. Pictures of children hang with clothing pins from two lines. Pictures slide along the lines.
[Raven squawks]
Text reads “Raven’s Quest”
[Speaking Mi'kmaq language]
Malakai stands in tall grass by the edge of a forest.
Text reads “Malakai.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Malakai says, I AM MALAKAI
AND I'M ELEVEN YEARS OLD.
I AM MI'KMAQ AND I COME
FROM MEMBERTOU FIRST NATION
IN SYDNEY, NOVA SCOTIA.
A circle indicates Membertou First Nation on an animated map of Canada.
[Swoosh]
A woman wearing glasses holds a grey cat.
Malakai says, THIS IS MY MOM, CANDICE.
Candace says, HI!
Malakai says, MY CLAN NAME-
GUESS WHAT IT IS.
Malakai holds up a piece of paper with the word “Jake’J.”
A drawing of a lobster appears below that name.
Malakai says, JAKE'J.
THAT MEANS LOBSTER
IN MI'KMAQ. JAKE'J.
Text reads “Lobster.”
[Squeak]
Malakai says, WE'RE THE LOBSTER CLAN.
[Giggling]
An animated pink lobster dances under Malakai.
[Tapping]
Malakai says, DON'T MESS WITH US!
[Laughing]
The grey cat sits on a stool. To her left, text reads “Malaki Cam.”
Text below her reads “Malawi.”
Malakai says, THIS IS MY CAT, MALAWI.
SHE'S A BLUE CORNISH REX.
SHE HAS REALLY WAVY FUR.
PEOPLE THINK
SHE'S KINDA FUNNY,
BUT I THINK SHE'S
KINDA CUTE.
[Meow]
Malakai sits on a sofa. A young boy wearing a yellow shirt holds an action figure. A boy with short hair and glasses wears an orange shirt as he draws. A girl with glasses looks at a handheld device.
Malakai says, THIS IS MY FAMILY.
THIS IS MY BABY
BROTHER ROWAN.
Rowan smiles.
Malakai says, THIS IS MY BROTHER, CHEY.
Text below the boy in the orange shirt reads “Cheyenne.”
Chey says, HI.
Malakai says, AND THAT'S MY SISTER.
WHAT'S UP, ASIA?
Text appears beside the girl with glasses. It reads “Malaysia.”
Asia replies, NOTHIN',
JUST PLAYING MY GAME.
Malakai dances on long grass.
Malakai says, I'M DANCING
TRADITIONAL DANCE.
WITH THE TRADITIONAL,
YOU JUST TAP YOUR FEET TWICE
AND LIKE, KEEP GOING.
EVER SINCE I WAS SEVEN,
I'VE BEEN DOING
TRADITIONAL DANCING.
Spotlight create circles on grass as dancers celebrate.
[Dancers cheer]
Malakai says, I'M REALLY PROUD
TO BE MI'KMAQ.
Malakai walks into a blue room.
Malakai says, THIS IS MY ROOM.
I WANNA SHOW YOU SOMETHING.
[Energetic music plays]
Malakai picks up a basket ball.
THIS IS A HARLEM
GLOBETROTTER BALL.
I AM REALLY INTO BASKETBALL.
IT HAS ALL THE SIGNATURES ON IT.
THESE ARE ALL MY TROPHIES
THAT I WON.
I GOT A HOCKEY TROPHY,
THIS IS A SUMMER GAMES MEDAL.
THE SUMMER GAMES MEDALS,
THEY'RE KINDA LIKE THE OLYMPICS
FOR NATIVES.
THIS YEAR THEY WERE
REALLY COMPETITIVE,
AND WE GOT BRONZE.
Malakai points to a painting of trees and a starry sky.
He says, MY AUNTIE NELL
MADE THIS FOR ME.
I LOVE THE TEXTURE.
IT TOOK HER LIKE ONE TO TWO
WEEKS TO MAKE THIS PAINTING.
[Shouting]
[Ball bounces]
Text beside a boy with short brown hair reads “TJ.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Malakai says, TJ IS MY BEST FRIEND.
WE GO TO THE SAME SCHOOL.
TJ says, OOH!
Malakai says, WE HANG OUT,
WE PLAY LOTS OF BASKETBALL,
PLAY GAMES.
[Basketball hits net]
Malakai says, WE HAVE LOTS OF FUN TOGETHER.
TJ says, GO!
Malakai says, I GOT A NEW
BASKETBALL NET,
AND IT KINDA GIVES ME ADVANTAGE.
[Rattle of ball in net]
Malakai and TJ walk beside a fence. They walk to the glass doors of a building.
Malakai says, THIS IS OUR YOUTH CENTRE.
THIS IS WHERE ME AND TJ
LIKE TO HANG OUT.
THERE'S LOTS OF
COOL ACTIVITIES.
THERE'S A LOT OF
FUN THINGS TO DO
AT THE YOUTH CENTRE.
TJ leans towards Malakai’s computer.
TJ says, OH, YOUR SHIP'S SO SMALL.
MINE'S HUGE.
Malakai gets up and looks at TJ’s screen.
[Scrap of chair legs]
Malakai says, WE CAN PLAY COMPUTERS,
PING-PONG, POOL, ARCHERY.
[Chime from computer game]
A man wearing a baseball hat and red hoodie holds a bow and arrow.
TJ and Malakai stand beside him.
The man says, WE'RE GONNA START FROM--
ABOUT 20 FEET OUT.
Text appears beside the man. It reads “Alex.”
Malakai says, ALEX SETS EVERYTHING UP
AND HE TEACHES US
HOW TO STAND PROPERLY.
[Twang of bow string]
[Thunk]
[Woo!]
Malakai says, ARCHERY WAS REALLY IMPORTANT
TO MY ANCESTORS.
THAT'S HOW
THEY GOT THEIR FOOD.
IT TAKES A LOT OF PRACTICE.
Malakai tells TJ, YEP. GOOD JOB.
Malakai says, AND I'M PROUD THAT I LEARNED
HOW TO DO THIS TECHNIQUE.
[Thunk]
[Whoa!]
Alex says, GOOD JOB.
Malakai says, YEP!
A sign on a white building reads “Membertou Heritage Park.”
Malakai holds the Malakai Cam.
Malakai says, WE'RE HERE AT THE
MEMBERTOU HERITAGE PARK.
I LIKE GOING TO
MEMBERTOU'S HERITAGE PARK
BECAUSE OF ALL THE HISTORY,
WATCHING THE HISTORY MOVIES.
THESE ARE LIKE, MY ANCESTORS.
Malakai looks at black and white photos.
He continues, MEMBERTOU WAS A SWAMP,
AND THEN THEY LIKE, KINDA FIXED IT UP.
Malakai touches a brown fur pelt.
An animated bear waves.
Malakai says, THIS IS BEAR FUR.
THIS IS ACTUALLY COOL.
[Slide whistle]
Malakai, Chey and TJ stand outside the building.
Malakai says, LET'S GO SEE--
THE BACK!
ALL RIGHT.
[Running feet]
Malakai stops by a white bust on a pedestal.
Malakai says, HERE IS ONE OF THE CHIEFS,
DON MARSHALL.
AND HERE'S GRAND CHIEF MEMBERTOU,
WHO LOOKS AWESOME.
[Mumble of children’s voices]
Malakai says, IS THAT ALL THE STATUES?
ALL RIGHT.
LET'S GO SEE
THE SWEAT LODGE.
THIS IS HOW IT LOOKS.
AND THEY HAVE LIKE,
A BUNCH OF FIRE,
AND IT GETS SUPER HOT.
A SWEAT LODGE
IS WHERE YOU GO TO PRAY.
CAN'T WAIT FOR
THESE INDIAN TACOS.
I'M PUMPED FOR THEM!
Malakai and TJ run to a pink food truck.
Malakai’s auntie asks, THE USUAL?
Malakai and TJ say, YEAH.
Malakai says, MY AUNTIE NIKKI
HAS A FOOD TRUCK.
THAT'S WHERE ME AND TJ
GET OUR FAVOURITE SNACKS.
Auntie Nikki puts together a taco.
Malakai explains, THE INDIAN TACO
IS JUST FRY BREAD
WITH CHILI, VEGETABLES,
AND ANY KIND OF TOPPING
YOU WOULD LIKE ON IT.
TJ says, MMM.
Malakai says, THAT LOOKS GOOD.
[Squeak]
MY AUNTIE GOES TO POW-WOWS
JUST TO FEED EVERYONE.
An animated raven gives a thumb’s up with its wing.
[Ting]
Malakai says, THERE'S A LOT OF OTHER
FOOD TRUCKS
BUT I THINK HERS IS THE BEST.
I USUALLY GET DISCOUNTS.
[Chuckling]
Auntie Nikki says, THERE YOU GO,
THE FAMOUS INDIAN TACO.
Malakai and TJ sit at a table in Malakai’s kitchen and eat their tacos.
[Rustling]
Malakai says, MY PEOPLE KNOW THE INDIAN TACO
AS THE L'NU TACO.
Text reads “L’nu taco.”
Malakai says, IT'S AMAZING.
[Drum music plays]
Malakai dances.
Malakai says, MY AND MY FAMILY
GO ON THE POW-WOW TAIL
LIKE FIFTEEN TIMES EACH SUMMER.
A group of people dance.
A man announces, POW-WOW TIME!
Malakai says, I DO MY DANCING BECAUSE SOME
KIDS DON'T DO THE DANCING
AND IF THEY SEE ME DOING IT,
THEY'RE PROBABLY
GONNA WANNA DO IT,
AND IT'S GOOD TO KEEP ON
THE TRADITION.
Malakai stands in his bedroom. He holds a hanger with his regalia on it.
Malakai says, THIS IS MY REGALIA.
MOST OF IT WAS MADE
BY MY AUNTIE CLAIRE.
THIS IS A CHOKER.
THIS IS A REDALLION,
THIS GOES ON MY FOREHEAD.
THE THING THAT I MADE
WITH MY MOM
WAS THIS KNIFE HOLDER.
IT HAS A KNIFE IN IT
MADE OUT OF BONE FROM A BEAR.
EVERYBODY'S, UM, REGALIA
IS REALLY UNIQUE.
A man with a long dark braid and glasses wears a red shirt. He holds a headpiece with feathers.
Text reads “Jeff.”
Malakai says, JEFF IS MY FRIEND.
HE'S BEEN DANCING
FOR A WHILE.
HE HAS A LOT OF REGALIA.
AND HE'S LENDING ME THIS SPECIAL
REGALIA FOR MY DANCE TODAY.
WE DO A LOT
OF POW-WOWS TOGETHER.
Jeff says, HE'S SHOWING PROUDNESS.
WHENEVER HE DANCES,
HE DOES IT WITH GREAT HONOUR
AND GREAT RESPECT.
WOW. THAT IS AMAZING.
THAT IS PERFECT.
Malakia dances with Asia, Chey and Rowan.
[Chanting, drumming]
Malakai says, ALL MY BROTHERS
AND SISTER DANCE.
MY GRAMMY SARAH DENNY,
SHE TAUGHT US HOW.
A man says, ALLOW THAT DRUM
TO CONTROL YOU.
Malakai says, WHEN I'M DANCING,
I'M HELPING THE ELDERS HEAL.
[Bells jangle, drum beats]
A man sings as Malakai dances.
Malakai says, I DANCE FOR ELDERS
THAT CAN'T DANCE,
AND I PRAY FOR THEM.
I DO IT FOR MY ANCESTORS,
THE COMMUNITY.
I FEEL GOOD WHEN I DO IT.
Malakai smiles as he dances.
[Drumming]
The drummer says, TAHO!
Malakai says, NMU'LTES, SEE YOU LATER!
[Upbeat music plays]
End credits for Raven’s Quest roll.
[Chirping, flapping, squawking]
[Whee!]
Logo appears for “TVO Kids”
[Giggling]
[Squeaking, blink, blink]
Logo appears for “Apartment Eleven Productions.”
The animated sun shines.
Kristy sits by the round table.
Text reads “Primary one to three. Teacher Kristy.”
[Relaxing music plays]
Kristy says, I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THAT EPISODE
OF RAVEN'S QUEST
AND ALL OF THE THINGS MALAKAI
HAD A CHANCE TO SHARE WITH US
ABOUT HIS LIFE.
AS I WAS WATCHING THAT EPISODE
OF RAVEN'S QUEST,
I WAS THINKING ALL ABOUT
THE DIFFERENT THINGS
THAT MALAKAI MIGHT WRITE DOWN
IF HE WERE CREATING A HEART MAP.
WHAT THE THINGS ARE HE SHARED
THAT WERE SPECIAL TO HIM.
Kristy holds up a piece of paper with a heart and words on it.
[Upbeat music plays]
She says, SO, I TOOK A FEW MINUTES
AND I CREATED MY OWN HEART MAP
FOR MALAKAI.
SO, I THOUGHT ABOUT ALL
OF HIS SPECIAL ACTIVITIES.
SO, I WROTE DOWN ARCHERY
IS SOMETHING HE ENJOYS.
I WROTE DOWN ON THE OTHER SIDE
HE LIKES GOING TO POW-WOWS.
I WROTE DOWN HE ENJOYS SPENDING
TIME AT THE YOUTH CENTRE.
HE TOLD US ALL ABOUT
HIS AUNT'S FOOD TRUCK
AND THE INDIAN TACOS SHE MAKES
ON FRIED BREAD.
AND THEN HE TOLD US ABOUT
HOW MUCH HE ENJOYS
TRADITIONAL DANCING
AND THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS
HE LIKES TO DO
AND HE'S REALLY GOOD AT.
SO, THAT'S NOT
A VERY FULL HEART MAP.
USUALLY, IF I WERE TO DO THIS
FOR SCHOOL OR IF MY STUDENTS
WERE TO DO IT,
WE WOULD FILL IT.
WE WOULD HAVE IT CRAMMED
WITH PICTURES AND WORDS.
THAT'S ANOTHER THING
THAT'S IMPORTANT TO KNOW
ABOUT THE HEART MAP.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO
JUST DO WORDS IN HERE.
YOU CAN ALSO USE PICTURES
TO STATE YOUR IDEAS.
DOESN'T REALLY MATTER
'CAUSE THIS ISN'T THE STORY.
THIS IS THE BRAINSTORM.
SO, A HEART MAP IS ONE TOOL
FOR BRAINSTORMING,
AND THERE'S LOTS OF OTHER WAYS
WE CAN GET OUR IDEAS OUT
AND GET OUR BRAINS WARMED UP
TO DO SOME WRITING.
SO, OTHER THINGS WE CAN DO
TO GET OUR IDEAS FLOWING
AND GET OUR BRAINS WARMED UP
IS TALKING TO FRIENDS.
SO, IF YOU'RE GETTING READY
TO WRITE, SHARING YOUR IDEAS
AND HEARING WHAT THEIR IDEAS
FOR WHAT THEY'RE GOING
TO WRITE ABOUT ARE,
IS A GREAT WAY
TO START THINKING.
OFTEN IN MY CLASS,
I'LL HAVE MY STUDENTS SHARE
WHAT THEY'RE GOING TO WRITE
ABOUT BEFORE THEY GO GET READY,
AND THEN THAT'LL HELP STUDENTS
WHO DIDN'T HAVE
AN IDEA OF THEIR OWN
BECAUSE IT MIGHT REMIND THEM
OF SOMETHING
THEY WANT TO TELL ME ABOUT
IN THEIR WRITING.
OTHER THINGS WE CAN DO
ARE MAKING LISTS.
LISTS ARE A GREAT TOOL AND
YOU CAN HAVE A SPECIFIC TOPIC.
IN JUST A FEW MINUTES,
WE'RE GOING TO PRACTICE--
WE'RE GONNA TAKE A LOOK
AT MAKING A LIST AND PRACTICE
ON HEART MAPPING.
YOU CAN USE ALL SORTS OF
DIFFERENT GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS.
MIND MAPS ARE A GREAT ONE,
WHERE YOU PUT A WORD
IN THE MIDDLE
AND YOU MAKE LITTLE BUBBLES
COMING OFF OF IT
WITH DIFFERENT IDEAS.
YOU CAN ALSO DICTATE
USING TEXT-TO-SPEECH
TO WRITE DOWN YOUR IDEAS.
SO, THOSE ARE ALL DIFFERENT WAYS
YOU CAN BRAINSTORM.
THIS IS REALLY THE MOST
IMPORTANT PART OF WRITING.
YOU CAN'T DO THE REST OF IT
IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN IDEA.
SO, WHEN IT COME
TO BRAINSTORMING,
IT'S ALWAYS GOOD
TO TAKE YOUR TIME
AND WRITE DOWN MORE IDEAS
THAN YOU'RE GOING TO NEED.
THERE'S NEVER
TOO MANY IDEAS.
SOMETIMES WE'LL HAVE TO TAKE
THEM OUT IN OUR GOOD COPY,
BUT THAT'S FINE.
IT'S MUCH EASIER TO WRITE
IF I'VE GOT TOO MUCH TO SAY
THAN IF I DON'T HAVE
ENOUGH TO SAY.
I'D LIKE YOU TO THINK ABOUT,
AS WE WORK THROUGH THESE,
WHICH TOOLS DO YOU THINK
WOULD WORK FOR YOU?
I REALLY LOVE HEART MAPPING,
I'VE TOLD YOU ABOUT THAT,
AND I LIKE BRAINSTORMING,
BUT MAYBE FOR SOME OF YOU,
A LIST OR THE IDEA
OF TALKING TO A FRIEND
WOULD WORK BETTER FOR YOU.
IT'S ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA
TO PRACTICE DIFFERENT WAYS
SO YOU KNOW
WHICH BRAINSTORMING TOOLS
ARE THE ONES THAT HELP YOU
THINK OF YOUR IDEAS
AND GET YOU WARMED UP
AND READY TO WRITE.
The animated sun shines.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kristy holds a pen over a piece of paper. The title on the paper reads “My favourite foods.” Her list includes “pizza, sushi, chicken korma, fajitas, chocolate covered potato chips, scrambled eggs, salted caramel ice cream and grilled cheese sandwiches.”
Kristy says, WE ARE GOING TO BE
TAKING A LOOK
AT OUR OWN DIFFERENT STRATEGIES
FOR BRAINSTORMING.
THE FIRST ONE I'VE GOT HERE
IS A TOOL THAT'S CALLED A LIST.
I'M SURE YOU HAVE
MADE A LIST BEFORE.
I FINISHED THIS LIST CALLED
"MY FAVOURITE FOODS"
AND I BRAINSTORMED A LIST
OF SOME OF MY FAVOURITE FOODS.
SO, IF I WANTED TO WRITE
ABOUT THAT TOPIC,
I HAVE LOTS OF IDEAS HERE.
SO, I STARTED AND I THOUGHT
ABOUT THE FOODS I LIKE.
SO, I HAVE PIZZA, I HAVE SUSHI,
I HAVE CHICKEN KORMA,
I HAVE FAJITAS.
I HAVE A CHOCOLATE STORE
THAT'S REALLY CLOSE TO MY HOUSE,
AND IT MAKES
CHOCOLATE-COVERED POTATO CHIPS.
AND THEY'RE PRETTY DELICIOUS.
FOR SNACKS, I'D PROBABLY
PUT THAT ONE AT NUMBER ONE.
I LIKE SCRAMBLED EGGS, I LIKE
SALTED CARAMEL ICE CREAM,
I LIKE GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICHES.
SO, THIS IS A LIST THAT I DID
FOR BRAINSTORMING.
THE LIST WAS A LITTLE BIT EASIER
BECAUSE I HAD A SPECIFIC TOPIC
I WAS BRAINSTORMING ABOUT.
SO, WHEN YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC TOPIC,
THAT CAN HELP
MAKE THINGS EASIER.
SO, IF YOU'RE TRYING TO THINK
ABOUT SOMETHING TO WRITE ABOUT
AND YOU'RE MAKING A LIST,
TRY TO THINK
OF SOMETHING SPECIFIC,
LIKE "MY FAVOURITE FOODS"
OR "MY FAVOURITE ACTIVITIES"
OR "MY FAVOURITE PEOPLE".
THOSE ARE ALL
DIFFERENT THINGS
THAT YOU COULD THINK
TO WRITE ABOUT.
AND REMEMBER, WHEN WE WRITE
ABOUT THE THINGS WE LIKE,
IT MAKES IT MUCH EASIER TO WRITE.
WE'RE GOING TO
WORK TOGETHER NOW,
AND I'M GOING TO CREATE
MY VERY OWN HEART MAP.
[Flipping page]
Kristy turns the page. A blank “Heart map organizer” has a drawing of a heart and lines around it.
Kristy says, SO, WE THOUGHT ABOUT MALAKAI
AND WHAT HIS HEART MAP
MIGHT LOOK LIKE.
AND NOW, I'M GOING TO CREATE
MY VERY OWN HEART MAP.
SO, A HEART MAP SAYS, "THINK OF
ALL YOUR LIKES AND INTERESTS.
"RECORD THESE IDEAS IN YOUR HEART.
"USE WORDS AND SYMBOLS
TO SHOW MEANING."
SO, A REALLY IMPORTANT THING TO
KNOW WHEN YOU'RE BRAINSTORMING
IS YOU DON'T ALWAYS HAVE
TO USE WORDS TO BRAINSTORM.
IT CAN BE PICTURES.
SO, I'M GOING TO THINK ABOUT--
AND THIS IS PRETTY TRICKY
BECAUSE I HAVE A LOT
OF THINGS I LIKE,
SO I'M GONNA START--
I'LL WRITE, "MY FAMILY".
WELL, LET'S SEE.
LIKES AND INTERESTS.
Kristy draws a house.
She continues, OH, I REALLY LIKE MY HOUSE
AND DOING WORK ON MY HOUSE.
MAYBE I'LL DRAW A LITTLE PATH
FROM MY FRONT DOOR
AND I'LL DRAW SOME FLOWERS
'CAUSE I REALLY LIKE GARDENING.
NOW, I WANT YOU TO NOTICE
AS I'M DRAWING,
THIS IS NOT MY VERY BEST ARTWORK
THAT I HAVE EVER DONE.
I'M JUST DRAWING TO
REMIND MYSELF OF THIS IDEA.
SO, IF I'M TRYING TO THINK
OF SOMETHING TO WRITE ABOUT,
I CAN REALLY LOOK
AT THAT PICTURE QUICKLY
WITH SOME LITTLE
SCRIBBLY-LOOKING FLOWERS,
BUT IT MAKES SENSE TO ME,
AND THAT'S THE IMPORTANT THING.
THIS HEART MAP ORGANIZER
IS NOT FOR SOMEONE ELSE.
THIS IS FOR YOU.
SO, MY FAMILY IS IN THERE.
UM, LET'S SEE.
I'M GONNA DRAW SOME WAVES
AND I'M GONNA WRITE
THE WORD "SWIMMING".
THAT'S SOMETHING
I LOVE TO DO.
UM, I REALLY LIKE
GOING OUT ON MY KAYAK,
SO THAT'S SOMETHING ELSE
I REALLY LIKE TO DO.
I'M LUCKY ENOUGH THAT I LIVE
CLOSE TO THE WATER
SO THOSE ARE THINGS
I GET TO DO.
UM, I AM GONNA DRAW--
LET'S SEE. I'LL DRAW...
I HAVE TWO CATS, SO I'LL DRAW
TWO LITTLE CAT HEADS.
AND THIS DOESN'T ALL
HAVE TO BE DRAWING,
BUT I CAN DRAW--
I'M GONNA WRITE UP HERE,
I'LL WRITE,
"SANDY...
"AND THOR".
THOSE ARE MY DOGS
THAT I HAVE.
YOU KNOW WHAT, THOUGH?
I MIGHT REALLY LIKE
TO WRITE ABOUT MY OLD DOGS
THAT I DON'T HAVE ANYMORE-
WALTER AND CORBIN.
THEY WERE REALLY, REALLY
SPECIAL DOGS AND I MISS THEM,
SO MAYBE THAT'S SOMETHING
I COULD WRITE ABOUT.
WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES?
OH, I LOVE READING,
SO I COULD WRITE "READING"
AND IF I WANTED TO I COULD DO
A LITTLE PICTURE OF A BOOK.
UM, LET'S SEE.
OH! I LOVE TEACHING,
AND THIS YEAR
AND NEXT YEAR,
I'M TEACHING KINDERGARTEN
AND THAT'S A LOT
OF FUN TO DO.
KINDERGARTEN.
I THINK I'M GONNA WRITE--
OH, "KINDERGARTEN"
DOESN'T HAVE A D ON THE END.
THAT'S OKAY 'CAUSE THIS
IS MY MIND MAP.
SO, I WROTE ABOUT SOME THINGS
I LIKE TO DO.
READING--
I LIKE TO DO CRAFTS.
THINK I'M GONNA WRITE "CRAFTS"
INSTEAD OF DRAWING A PICTURE
'CAUSE THERE'S A LOT OF
DIFFERENT CRAFTS I LIKE TO DO.
UM, I LOVE-- ONE OF MY OTHER
HOBBIES OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL
IS I REALLY LIKE
PERFORMING IN PLAYS.
SO, I'M GONNA DRAW--
UM, THERE'S SOME MASKS
THAT YOU SEE FOR THEATRE-
THE MASKS OF COMEDY...
AND TRAGEDY.
SO, ONE SAYS HAPPY.
AND THEY'RE SYMBOLS
FOR THEATRE,
SO I KNOW THAT MAKES ME
THINK ABOUT PLAYS.
UM, I LIKE SINGING,
AND I PALY A COUPLE
OF INSTRUMENTS,
SO I COULD PUT THAT DOWN.
MUSIC, DRAMA.
LET'S SEE.
WHAT OTHER STUFF
DO I LIKE? HMM.
I LIKE GOING FOR WALKS.
"..FOR WALKS".
BUT I LIVE IN A REALLY NICE TOWN
CALLED PERTH
AND I REALLY LOVE MY TOWN,
SO I MIGHT WANNA WRITE
ABOUT MY TOWN
AND SOME OF THE REALLY NICE
PLACES THERE ARE TO VISIT HERE.
UM, I LIKE TALKING
WITH MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY,
SO MAYBE I'LL MAKE A LITTLE
SPEECH BUBBLE FOR TALKING.
OH, I DIDN'T DRAW ONE
OF MY VERY FAVOURITE THINGS
THAT IN THE MORNING,
I'M NOT SURE ANYBODY
WANTS TO BE AROUND ME
UNTIL I'VE HAD A CUP OF TEA.
'CAUSE I'M A BIT OF A
GRUMPASAURUS WITHOUT ONE.
SO, LET'S LOOK. I TOLD ABOUT
SOME SPECIAL PEOPLE.
MY FAMILY. I COULD WRITE
MY FRIENDS IN HERE TOO.
AND I WROTE
ABOUT MY KINDERGARTENS,
KINDERGARTENERS.
I WROTE ABOUT PLACES.
OH, ANOTHER PLACE I REALLY LIKE
IS SCHOOL, WHERE I TEACH.
AT ST. FRANCIS,
I'LL WRITE THAT DOWN.
LET'S SEE. WHAT ELSE?
I WROTE ABOUT SOME ACTIVITIES
I LIKE TO DO.
SO, USING THIS STRATEGY,
THIS HEART MAPPING,
YOU'LL SEE
I DIDN'T TAKE VERY LONG
AND I HAVE PUT
SO MANY IDEAS DOWN
ABOUT THINGS
THAT I CARE ABOUT
AND THINGS THAT I
REALLY, REALLY LIKE.
THE HEART MAPPING
IS A REALLY GOOD ONE
AND LIKE I SAID BEFORE,
I KEEP THIS IN MY NOTEBOOK
OR HAVE MY STUDENTS KEEP THIS
IN THEIR NOTEBOOKS
SO THAT WHENEVER THEY'RE
TRYING TO THINK ABOUT IDEAS
AND WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT,
THEY CAN LOOK BACK
AT THIS PAPER
AND THINK ABOUT SOME
OF THEIR FAVOURITE THINGS.
AND THE OTHER THING ABOUT
A HEART MAP THAT I LOVE
IS IT'S NEVER FINISHED.
IF I GOT A NEW BICYCLE,
I COULD COME IN HERE
LATER IN THE YEAR...
OOH, THIS MIGHT BE TRICKY.
I SHOULD'VE THOUGHT ABOUT THIS
BEFORE I PICKED WHAT TO DRAW.
A BIKE IS NOT THE EASIEST.
ALL RIGHT, THAT SORT OF
LOOKS LIKE A BICYCLE.
SO, DURING THE YEAR,
I CAN COME BACK AT ANY TIME
AND ADD TO THIS.
SO, TRY AND CREATE
YOUR OWN HEART MAP
IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR IDEAS
FOR WHAT YOU CAN WRITE ABOUT.
The animated sun shines.
[Whee!]
The “TVO Kids” logo appears.
[Giggling]
A logo appears for “Apartment Eleven.”
Text reads “Original. Presented in collaboration with Cirque du Soleil Images.”
A girl with a thick brown braid and a white shirt stands at the bottom of a staircase.
[Birds chirp]
The girls says, WE'VE BEEN TRAINING
FOR A LONG TIME TO DO THIS,
AND ARE ALWAYS WATCHED
BY OUR PRO COACH.
SO, PLEASE DON'T TRY ANY
OF THE MOVES YOU SEE US DO.
NOW, ENJOY THE SHOW!
She waves.
[Beeping]
An image of Nick, a boy with dark curly hair, is connected to an image of Ella, a girl with long, straight black hair, by blue stars. Text reads “Connecting to” as the stars turn yellow.
[Ding]
Text reads “Connected.”
[Sigh]
[Dramatic music plays]
Nick says, OKAY, HOW DO WE DO THIS?
Ella says, EASY.
WE SOLVE A MYSTERY.
Nick says, ELLA, WE HAVE TO FIGURE OUT
THE DEAL WITH THE SCARVES
BY THE END OF THE DAY
OR THE VOICE SAID THERE
WILL BE CONSEQUENCES.
Ella says, OH. SO, NOT EASY.
Nick says, AND WE'RE SUPPOSED TO WORK
ON THE BULLETIN.
BUT I DON'T THINK WE CAN.
Ella says, NOBODY'S EVER BAILED
ON THE BULLETIN BEFORE.
Nick says, I KNOW. AND IT'S AXEL'S EDITION.
Ella says, MAYBE HE WON'T NEED
EVERYBODY'S HELP?
Text reads “Connecting to.”
Images of Rosa, Phoenix, Nick, Celeste, Max, Ella, Axel and April appear over and under the text.
[Chiming]
Eight teenagers appear in rectangles.
April has long blonde hair and wears a yellow hoodie.
Axel has short blond hair and wears a blue shirt.
Nick has black curly hair and wears a blue and grey hoodie.
Max has short brown hair and sits at a piano.
Phoenix wears her brown hair in long braids and wears a yellow hoodie.
Rosa has long, straight brown hair and a yellow hoodie.
Celeste wears her brown hair in a ponytail on the left side of her head. She sits in front of a chalkboard.
Ella has long, straight brown hair and wears a yellow hoodie.
Axel says, GUYS,
I NEED EVERYONE'S HELP,
BECAUSE FOR MY EDITION,
WE'RE DOING A SHOWCASE.
IT'LL BE JUST LIKE
WE DID AT BTA.
AND I'VE GOT EVERYTHING
FIGURED OUT.
IT'S GONNA BE BIG,
SPECTACULAR,
GRANDIOSE.
DID I MENTION BIG?
Nick says, OR--
AND HEAR ME OUT--
WE DO THE OPPOSITE.
Ella says, YEAH!
SMALL. INTIMATE.
JUST A FEW PEOPLE.
Axel looks disappointed.
Ella says, LET'S SAY, SIX?
Axel says, WHAT? I--
I ALREADY TOLD
MS. MARTEL.
I'VE EVEN GOT A THEME!
"CIRCUS IN THE STARS".
Ella says, DID YOU SAY "SCARVES"?
Axel says, UH, NO.
IT'S STARS.
WHY WOULD IT BE SCARVES?
Celeste says, THAT ALL SOUNDS AMAZING.
JUST TELL US WHAT YOU NEED.
Nick says, ACTUALLY--
ELLA AND I HAVE
SOMETHING ELSE TO DO TODAY.
Ella says, SOMETHING IMPORTANT.
Axel asks, WHAT COULD BE MORE IMPORTANT
THAN THE BULLETIN?
[Scoffing]
Axel continues, AND THE WHOLE POINT
OF DOING THE SHOWCASE
WAS TO DO SOMETHING GREAT, TOGETHER.
[Sad music plays]
Nick says, I'M SORRY, AXEL.
BUT YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE US
IF WE TOLD YOU.
Axel looks disbelieving.
Ella says, YEAH. SORRY, AXEL.
Ella and Nick turn off their cameras. Their images disappear.
[Click, click]
April, Axel, Max, Phoenix, Rosa and Celeste look unhappy.
[Exciting music plays]
A girl hangs upside down in a hoop. Max flips. Ella hula hoops. Nick dances in a chair.
Text reads “Nicholas. April. Celeste. Axel. Ella. Rosa. Max. Phoenix.”
“Cirque du Soleil. Big Top Academy. School’s Out Edition.”
[Tense music plays]
Ella and Nick look unhappy as they throw a blue scarf back and forth.
[Swish, swish, swish, swish, swish, swish, swish]
Ella says, IT'S OFFICIAL.
THIS ISN'T WORKING.
WE NEED TO TRY
SOMETHING ELSE
BECAUSE TICK TOCK.
AND I DO NOT WANNA FIND OUT
WHAT THE CONSEQUENCES ARE.
Nick says, WHAT WE NEED IS TO GET
EVERYONE TOGETHER.
Ella says, BUT EVERYONE'S DOING
THE SHOWCASE.
WAIT, WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?
WE STOP THE SHOWCASE?
Nick says, RIGHT NOW IT DOESN'T LOOK
LIKE WE HAVE A CHOICE.
I--I JUST REALLY WANTED
TO FIGURE THIS OUT
WITHOUT MESSING UP
AXEL'S EDITION.
Ella holds a hand to her face.
[Sigh]
Ella says, EIGHT SCARVES,
EIGHT OF US WORKING
ON THE BULLETIN
AND WHATEVER YOU AND ME
ARE DOING NOW
OBVIOUSLY ISN'T WORKING
WITH JUST US.
Nick says, I KNOW.
Text reads “Showstopper Challenge.”
[Spinning noise]
Max smiles as he stands in front of a trampoline.
[Energetic music plays]
Max says, WELCOME TO THE
SHOWSTOPPER CHALLENGE.
I WAS CHALLENGED
BY THE ONLY PERSON
TO EVER BAIL
FROM A SHOWCASE—
Image of Nick appears and disappears.
[Boing]
Max continues, THAT WOULD BE NICK ZOLTA--
TO ONE UP HIS ACT.
WHICH, FOR ME,
IS NO CHALLENGE.
SURE, HE CAN SHOOT HOOPS.
BUT CAN HE SHOOT HOOPS--
ON A TRAMPOLINE?
Max gets on the trampoline and zips the safety net shut behind him. He jumps and flips while holding a ball. He jumps and puts the ball into a net again and again.
Max laughs, HA!
[Cheering, applause]
Max says, HAHA!
TOO BAD NO ONE IS JUDGING,
'CAUSE THIS IS EASILY
A 9.8, MAYBE EVEN A 10
IF THEY'RE GIVING OUT POINTS
FOR ORIGINALITY.
NOT THAT I'M COMPETITIVE.
Max sinks baskets while jumping and flipping on the trampoline.
Max says, SO, I'D LOVE
TO CHALLENGE ZOLTA AGAIN,
BUT HE'D PROBABLY FIND A REASON
TO WEASEL OUT OF IT.
BESIDES, RULES ARE RULES.
SO, ROSA, YOU'RE UP NEXT.
BRING YOUR BEST
TO THE SHOWSTOPPER CHALLENGE.
[Beeping]
Nick’s image appears with blue stars connecting it to Axel’s image.
Text above the stars reads “Connecting to.” The stars turn yellow.
[Ringing]
[Dramatic music plays]
Axel says, DUDE,
I'M A LITTLE BUSY.
I KNOW YOU DON'T CARE,
BUT I'VE GOT A SHOWCASE
TO PUT ON.
Nick says, LOOK, I KNOW.
BUT, YOU'VE GOTTA
CANCEL IT.
Axel asks, ARE YOU JOKING ME?
Nick says, LOOK, SOME SERIOUS STUFF
IS GOING ON,
AND ELLA AND I NEED
EVERYONE'S HELP.
Axel says, SO, FIRST YOU BAIL ON ME,
AND NOW, MOMENTS BEFORE
WE'RE ABOUT TO GO ON,
YOU WANT ME
TO JUST PULL THE PLUG?
Nick says, TRUST ME, THIS IS
THE LAST THING I WANT.
OKAY, BUT REMEMBER WHEN I FOUND
THAT SECRET ROOM?
WELL, THEN A VOICE STARTED
TALKING TO ME AND ELLA
AND SENT US EIGHT SCARVES.
Axel says, SCARVES? TELL ME MORE!
Axel shakes his head and says, ACTUALLY, DON'T.
Nick says, WAIT, WAIT, WAIT.
LOOK, I THINK THE SCARVES
ARE SOME KIND OF PUZZLE,
AND I THINK ONE OF THEM
BELONGS TO EACH OF US.
Axel asks, BELONGS?
Nick says, WELL, TWO OF THEM
ALREADY CHANGED COLOUR.
ONE WHEN I GOT IT AND ONE
WHEN I PASSED IT TO ELLA.
Axel asks, ARE WE TALKING
WINTER SCARVES,
OR FLOATY SCARVES?
Nick says, REAL FLOATY.
Nick throws blue scarves in the air.
[Sad music plays]
He says, LOOK, SOMEHOW WE HAVE TO
GET A SCARF TO EVERYONE.
THERE'S ALMOST NO TIME
AND IF WE DON'T SOLVE THIS,
WE'VE BEEN TOLD
THERE'LL BE CONSEQUENCES.
SO, AGAIN,
I REALLY DON'T WANNA
MESS UP YOUR SHOW,
BUT WE CAN'T DO THE PERFORMANCE
AND SOLVE THE PUZZLE.
Axel says, UNLESS WE FOLLOW
CIRCUS RULE NUMBER ONE-
THE SHOW MUST GO ON.
The words “Big Top Bulletin” appear under a circus big top. Purple script appears below it reading “A word from the editor. An image of Axel in a black suit and tie, and a white shirt, slowly moves up beside the words.
[Crank]
A red curtain opens. Axel walks in front of a blue mat.
[Tense music plays]
Axel says, AND NOW
FOR THE GRAND FINALE.
I HAD BIG PLANS
FOR THIS ONE.
IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE
THE FIRST TIME
ALL OF US WOULD BE PERFORMING
TOGETHER IN A LONG TIME.
EVEN THOUGH WE'RE APART,
I STILL WANNA PUT ON
A CLASSIC BTA SHOWCASE,
AND FOR A WHILE THERE,
IT REALLY FELT LIKE WE WERE
FARTHER APART THAN EVER.
[Exciting music plays]
Axel continues, UNTIL WE FOUND A WAY, TOGETHER,TO CONNECT US.
SO, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
BOYS AND GIRLS,
STEP RIGHT UP

TAKE IT AWAY, NICK!
Text reads “Showcase” as rainbow colours swirl together.
[Circus music plays]

[Swish]
[Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh]
Nick holds the scarves as he dances.
He throws the scarves.
April sits on a hoop. She catches the scarves and twirls them.

[Applause, cheers]
Nick, Axel, Rosa, Celeste, April, and Max bow. Phoenix bows.
[Applause, cheers]
Tex reads “Big Top Academy Showcase.”
[Pop, pop, pop]
The teenagers pop up in windows on their screen.
April says, THAT WAS EPIC.
Max says, YEAH.
BUT I STILL HAVE NO IDEA
WHAT JUST HAPPENED.
Celeste says, I CAN'T WAIT TO ANALYZE
THE METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
OF THIS SPECIMEN.
Ms. Martel says, I LOVED IT.
WHAT A FABULOUS EDITION, AXEL.
Axel says, THANKS, MS. MARTEL.
Ms. Martel says, AND A SHOWCASE, SO CREATIVE,
SO ORIGINAL, AND I LOVED
THE USE OF PROPS.
I HAPPEN TO HAVE QUITE A
COLLECTION OF SCARVES MYSELF.
LOOKING FORWARD
TO THE NEXT EDITION!
Ms. Martel waves a red scarf and turns off her screen.
[Tense music plays]
April says, OKAY, SO NOW WE HAVE
FASHIONABLE NEW ACCESSORIES,
BUT WHAT NOW?
Ella says, FIND A SOLUTION,
OR HELLO CONSEQUENCES.
TICK TOCK.
Rosa asks, ARE THESE PART OF A PUZZLE?
Celeste asks, OR A MATHEMATICAL FUNCTION?
Nick says, WELL, LET'S SEE
WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE.
HOLD 'EM UP.
IT'S A MAP.
[Buzzing]
Phoenix says, BUT TO WHAT?
Ellas says, X MARKS THE SPOT.
Phoenix says, RIGHT.
BUT TO WHAT?
[Exciting music plays]
End credits for Big Top Academy play.
The animated sun shines.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kristy stands beside a large sheet of paper. The word “Respect” has a puffy line around it. Below, text reads “What are some ways we can show respect at school? At home? What are some other ways people can show respect?”
Text reads “Primary one to three. Teacher Kristy.”
Kristy says, I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THAT EPISODE
OF BIG TOP ACADEMY.
IT HAD SOME GREAT EXAMPLES
OF HOW DIFFERENT PEOPLE
SHOWED RESPECT FOR ONE ANOTHER
A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS.
HOW WE TREAT EACH OTHER IS
A REALLY GOOD SIGN OF RESPECT
AND HOW WE CAN TREAT
OTHER PEOPLE WELL.
TODAY WE'RE GOING TO USE
OUR FINAL STRATEGY,
WHICH IS GOING TO BE
MAKING A MIND MAP
ALL ABOUT RESPECT.
I HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS
HERE TO HELP ME KEEP ON TRACK
AND ALSO TO GIVE ME
A PLACE TO START.
SOMETIMES IF I JUST HAVE A WORD
LIKE "RESPECT"
THERE'S SO MANY IDEAS IT'S HARD
TO DECIDE WHAT TO WRITE DOWN.
BUT SOME OF OUR
GUIDING QUESTIONS HERE
WILL HELP US BE FOCUSED
WHEN WE GET GOING.
SO OUR QUESTIONS
WE HAVE HERE ARE--
SO, I THINK
I'M GOING TO START WITH
"WHAT ARE SOME WAYS WE CAN
SHOW RESPECT AT SCHOOL?"
SO, I'VE GOT
MY RESPECT BUBBLE HERE
AND I'M GOING TO START MAKING
SOME LITTLE LINES OFF OF IT
WITH MY IDEAS.
SO, UM, I THINK SHOWING RESPECT
AT SCHOOL, WELL--
IF YOU'RE A STUDENT...
WELL, LISTENING
TO THE TEACHER IS IMPORTANT,
BUT YOU KNOW WHAT?
I'M A TEACHER
AND LISTENING TO MY STUDENTS
IS A WAY I CAN SHOW RESPECT.
SO, I'M GOING TO SAY
"LISTENING TO...
"..EACH OTHER."
AND THEN MAYBE IN BRACKETS
I'LL WRITE "STUDENTS"...
AND THEN I'LL PUT A COMMA
AND I'LL WRITE "TEACHERS".
BECAUSE JUST BECAUSE
I'M A TEACHER
DOESN'T MEAN I DON'T NEED
TO SHOW RESPECT TO PEOPLE.
SO, THERE'S MY FIRST IDEA,
AND THAT RELATES TO RESPECT.
OTHER WAYS I CAN SHOW RESPECT
AT SCHOOL.
WELL, ONE OF MY
FAVOURITE THINGS
IS THE IDEA THAT
WE WANT TO TREAT...
..OTHER PEOPLE THE WAY
WE WANT TO BE TREATED.
"..WAY WE WANT...
"..TO BE TREATED."
I WANT PEOPLE TO TREAT ME
WITH KINDNESS AND RESPECT,
SO I'M GOING TO DO THINGS
TO OTHER PEOPLE
THAT I'D BE OKAY
IF THEY DID.
IF I DON'T WANT PEOPLE
TO SAY RUDE THINGS TO ME,
I'M NOT GOING TO SAY
RUDE THINGS TO THEM,
AND I DON'T THINK THAT'S
ANYTHING ANY OF US LIKE.
SO, "TREAT OTHER PEOPLE
THE WAY YOU WANNA BE TREATED"
IS ANOTHER IDEA ABOUT
HOW WE CAN SHOW RESPECT.
SOME WAYS WE CAN
SHOW RESPECT AT SCHOOL.
WELL, ANOTHER THING WE CAN DO
IS WE CAN DO OUR...WORK.
IT'S NOT SUPER RESPECTFUL
FOR STUDENTS
TO NOT BE DOING
WHAT THEIR TEACHERS
OR THE ADULTS IN THE SCHOOL
HAVE ASKED THEM TO,
AND EVEN FOR ME
AS A TEACHER,
I HAVE A JOB TO DO
AT SCHOOL.
I WOULDN'T BE SHOWING RESPECT
TO MY PRINCIPAL
IF I WASN'T DOING MY JOB.
I WOULDN'T BE SHOWING RESPECT
TO MY STUDENTS EITHER.
LET'S THINK ABOUT--
WE'VE GOT THREE GOOD IDEAS
ABOUT HOW WE CAN
SHOW RESPECT AT SCHOOL.
NOW LET'S START TO THINK ABOUT
HOW CAN WE SHOW RESPECT AT HOME?
WELL, YOU KNOW WHAT?
THIS LISTENING ONE--
I'M GONNA ADD THIS
FOR AT HOME TOO.
"LISTEN...
"..TO OUR PARENTS."
OH, YOU KNOW WHAT?
I HAVE AN IDEA
FOR EVERYWHERE.
YOU KNOW WHAT?
"USE MY MANNERS".
THAT'S ANOTHER NICE WAY
I CAN SHOW RESPECT.
AND MAYBE INCREDIBLE AN START
WHEN I DO A THOUGHT BUBBLE,
ALL MY IDEAS DON'T HAVE TO COME
FROM THE MIDDLE.
SOMETIMES MY SECOND BUBBLES WILL
MAKE ME THINK OF OTHER THINGS.
SO, THIS MADE ME THINK
OF SAYING
"PLEASE AND...
"..THANK YOU."
PUT THAT IN ITS OWN BUBBLE.
AND USING MY MANNERS MIGHT MEAN
HOLDING A DOOR FOR SOMEONE.
"HOLDING...THE DOOR."
SO, THOSE ARE BOTH WAYS
I CAN SHOW RESPECT
THAT HAVE TO DO
WITH USING MY MANNERS.
LET'S SEE.
SO, I THOUGHT OF
A FEW WAYS AT HOME.
HMM. YOU KNOW WHAT?
AT HOME,
I CAN ALSO DO MY CHORES.
SO, DO ANYTHING
THAT I'M EXPECTED TO DO
AND HELP CLEAN UP
AND HELP AROUND THE HOUSE
TO TAKE CARE OF MY HOME
AND MY FAMILY.
THAT'S A REALLY IMPORTANT WAY
TO SHOW RESPECT
TO MY FAMILY
AND TO MY HOUSE.
SOME WAYS OTHER PEOPLE
CAN SHOW RESPECT.
SO, I'VE GOT "USING MANNERS".
I'VE GOT-- LET'S SEE.
YOU KNOW, SOMETHING
I DON'T HAVE DOWN THERE
THAT'S A REALLY IMPORTANT PART
OF USING RESPECT--
AND IT RELATES TO SOME
OF THE OTHER THINGS--
BUT I'M GONNA SAY,
"KIND...WORDS"
JUST WHOEVER
YOU'RE TALKING TO.
USING KIND WORDS.
AND MAYBE I'LL ADD TO THAT,
"TONE OF...VOICE."
'CAUSE SOMETHING
I CAN SAY SOMETHING,
BUT IF I SAY THANK YOU
AND I SAY IT LIKE THIS--
Kristy gruffly says,
THANK YOU!
She continues, IT'S NOT VERY RESPECTFUL
AND IT'S NOT VERY POLITE,
EVEN THOUGH THE WORDS
ARE KIND OF POLITE WORDS.
SO, THIS IS HOW I COMPLETE
A MIND MAP.
I'M GOING TO CHALLENGE YOU
TO TAKE THIS IDEA OF RESPECT
AND I WANT YOU TO SEE
IF YOU CAN CREATE A MIND MAP.
MAYBE YOU CAN
CREATE A LIST.
MAYBE YOU CAN USE
TEXT-TO-SPEECH.
FIND YOUR OWN WAY
TO BRAINSTORM IDEAS
ABOUT HOW YOU CAN SHOW RESPECT
FOR THE PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE.
AT SCHOOL, AT HOME,
AND OTHER PEOPLE
OUT IN THE COMMUNITY.
SO, HOW CAN YOU BE RESPECTFUL?
THIS IS OUR BRAINSTORM CHALLENGE
FOR TODAY.
SO, GET YOUR PAPER,
GET YOUR PENCIL,
AND GET STARTED ON IDEAS
ABOUT HOW YOU CAN BE RESPECTFUL.
The animated sun shines.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kristy sits by her round table.
Text beneath her reads “Primary one to three. Teacher Kristy.”
Kristy says, THANK YOU SO MUCH
FOR JOINING US TODAY
ON TVOKIDS POWER HOUR
OF LEARNING
TO LEARN ALL ABOUT
BRAINSTORMING.
I HOPE YOU HAVE LOTS OF IDEAS
IN YOUR NOTEBOOK
AND YOU HAVE SOME THOUGHTS
ABOUT HOW YOU COULD BRAINSTORM
ABOUT RESPECT,
LIKE WE JUST DID,
OR MAYBE YOU HAVE
A HEART MAP STARTED
SO THAT YOU CAN HAVE
ALL KINDS OF IDEAS
FOR WHEN YOU NEED
TO WRITE AT SCHOOL.
WHATEVER BRAINSTORMING TOOL
YOU USE,
REMEMBER, BRAINSTORMING
IS A REALLY IMPORTANT PART
OF THE WRITING PROCESS,
AND YOU CAN'T GET STARTED
WITHOUT THOSE IDEAS.
SO, TRY LOTS OF DIFFERENT WAYS
TO BRAINSTORM.
I HOPE YOU HAD FUN TODAY,
AND WE LOOK FORWARD
TO SEEING YOU AGAIN
ON TVO KIDS POWER HOUR
OF LEARNING.
Kristy smiles.
The animated sun shines.
Text reads “TVO Kids would like to thank all the teachers involved in the Power Hour of Learning as they continue to teach the children of Ontario from their homes.”
“TVO Power Hour of Learning.”
A female announcer says, WELCOME TO
TVOKIDS POWER HOUR OF LEARNING.
TODAY’S PRIMARY LESSON, BRAINSTORMING.
Text reads “TVO Kids Power Hour of Learning. Teacher Edition. Today’s primary lesson, brainstorming.”
Teacher Kristy sits beside a small round wooden table. She wears a blue tee-shirt with the words “Be kind” written on it. Kristy wears a bright blue and pink bow in her dark brown hair. Behind her on the wall, a poster reads “Keep calm and teach on.” A corkboard has “Welcome” pinned on it.
Text reads “Primary one to three. Teacher Kristy.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Kristy says, HI, MY NAME IS KRISTY,
AND I'M REALLY EXCITED
TO BE YOUR TEACHER HERE TODAY ON
TVOKIDS POWER HOUR OF LEARNING.
TODAY WE'RE GOING TO BE
DOING A LESSON
ALL ABOUT THE BRAINSTORMING
PART OF WRITING.
WHENEVER WE WRITE, ONE OF
THE FIRST THINGS WE NEED TO DO
IS COME UP
WITH OUR IDEAS,
AND BRAINSTORMING
IS A GREAT WAY TO DO THAT.
TODAY, FOR YOUR WORK,
YOU'LL NEED SOME PAPER
OR A NOTEBOOK TO WRITE IN,
A PENCIL AND MAYBE SOME COLOURS
TO HELP HIGHLIGHT YOUR IDEAS.
SO, GRAB YOUR MATERIALS
AND LET'S GET TO WORK.
TODAY WE'RE GOING TO BE
FOCUSING ON BRAINSTORMING,
AND WHEN WE BRAINSTORM,
THERE ARE SOME DIFFERENT THINGS
WE NEED TO THINK ABOUT
BEFORE WE WRITE.
THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT THINGS
TO THINK ABOUT
BEFORE WE GET STARTED
ARE WHAT OUR TOPIC
IS GOING TO BE--
SO WHAT WE'RE ACTUALLY
GOING TO WRITE ABOUT--
AND THEN WHAT OUR FORM
IS GOING TO BE.
WHAT TYPE OF PIECE OF WRITING
ARE WE GONNA DO?
ARE WE GOING TO WRITE A LETTER,
ARE WE GOING TO DO A JOURNAL,
ARE WE GOING
TO WRITE A POEM?
ALL OF THOSE ARE THE DIFFERENT
FORMS WE CAN WRITE.
AS A BIT OF A WARM-UP
FOR OUR BRAINSTORMING,
I'M GOING TO ASK YOU
TO CLOSE YOUR EYES
AND I'M GOING TO ASK YOU
TO IMAGINE YOUR DREAM SNACK.
SO, HAVE YOUR EYES CLOSED,
AND I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT
THE BEST SNACK
YOU COULD POSSIBLY HAVE.
SO, I WANT YOU TO THINK
ABOUT...WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?
SO, I WANT YOU TO PICTURE
THAT DREAM SNACK IN YOUR HEAD.
I WANT YOU TO IMAGINE WHAT WOULD
YOUR DREAM SNACK TASTE LIKE?
IS IT SWEET?
IS IT SALTY?
CAN YOU SMELL IT?
WHAT WOULD THAT DREAM SNACK
SMELL LIKE?
KEEP YOUR EYES CLOSED
AND BREATHE IN.
[Inhaling]
WHAT DO YOU THINK
THAT DREAM SNACK WOULD BE?
LET'S OPEN OUR EYES
AND I HOPE,
WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED,
YOU WERE ABLE TO VISUALIZE
AND COME UP WITH
A REALLY GOOD IDEA
OF WHAT YOUR BRAIN--
YOUR SNACK MIGHT LOOK LIKE
WITH YOUR BRAINSTORM.
NOT A BRAIN SNACK.
THOUGH, I GUESS ALL FOOD
HELPS OUR BRAIN WORK.
WHEN WE TAKE TIME TO THINK
ABOUT OUR IDEAS ON A TOPIC,
IT'S LIKE WARMING UP
FOR WRITING.
IT'S LIKE WHEN WE EXERCISE,
WE STRETCH OUR BODIES
AND WE WARM UP OUR MUSCLES
BEFORE WE MOVE
SO WE DON'T GET HURT
AND SO WE WORK BETTER.
WHEN WE BRAINSTORM
AND WE WARM UP OUR BRAIN,
IT'S EASIER TO
COME UP WITH THE IDEAS
AND IT'S EASIER
TO GET OUR JOBS DONE.
IN THIS LEARNING ACTIVITY,
WE'RE GOING TO LOOK
AT A WHOLE BUNCH
OF DIFFERENT WAYS
YOU CAN BRAINSTORM
TO THINK OF A TOPIC
AND HOW YOU CAN RECORD
THOSE IDEAS FOR YOUR WRITING.
WE'RE GOING
TO START OFF TODAY
BY WATCHING AN EPISODE
OF SIXTEEN HUDSON.
IN THIS EPISODE,
THE CHARACTERS AREN'T WRITING,
BUT THEY DO HAVE
A PROBLEM TO SOLVE,
AND THE CHARACTERS
WORK TOGETHER
TO THINK OF DIFFERENT WAYS
TO SOLVE THEIR PROBLEM.
SO, WHILE YOU'RE WATCHING
THIS EPISODE OF SIXTEEN HUDSON,
I WANT YOU THINK ABOUT
HOW THESE CHARACTERS
ARE BRAINSTORMING
AND HOW THEY SHARE THEIR IDEAS
TO COME UP WITH THE SOLUTION
TO THEIR PROBLEM.
AND THERE'S MORE THAN ONE
PROBLEM IN THIS EPISODE
AND THERE'S MORE
THAN ONE TIME
THAT CHARACTERS
NEED TO BRAINSTORM.
SO, THINK ABOUT
HOW THEY'RE USING
THEIR BRAINSTORMING
STRATEGIES
AND HOW YOU COULD USE
A SIMILAR STRATEGY
WHEN YOU'RE DOING SOME WRITING
TO COME UP WITH IDEAS,
JUST LIKE THOSE CHARACTERS
ARE COMING UP WITH IDEAS
TO SOLVE THEIR PROBLEM.
SO, SIT BACK AND ENJOY
THIS EPISODE OF
SIXTEEN HUDSON
CALLED "STICK WITH IT",
AND I'LL SEE YOU BACK
IN JUST A FEW MINUTES.
Child says, WHEE!
TVO Kids logo and BigBadBoo Studios logos appear.
[Giggling]
Animated birds fly past a building.
[Happy music plays]
Voice sings, WHO'S THAT KNOCKING AT MY DOOR?
RACE YOU TO THE BOTTOM FLOOR
Children run down stairs.
Voice sings, WHO'S THAT PLAYING
HIDE AND SEEK?
COUNT TO TEN
AND DON'T YOU PEEK
Children run to a park. A boy skips rope. A girl rides a skateboard.
Voice sings, LET'S GET OUTSIDE AND PLAY
CREATE A BRAND NEW GAME
OR SEARCH BENEATH THE STAIRS
FOR HIDDEN TREASURE THERE
SIXTEEN HUDSON
THAT'S WHERE MY FRIENDS
ARE WAITING
SIXTEEN HUDSON
Children ride on swings. They look in displays in a bakery.
WON'T YOU COME ALONG?
SIXTEEN HUDSON
WHERE EVERYBODY'S WELCOME
SIXTEEN HUDSON
A rainbow arches over the building.
The voice sings, SIXTEEN HUDSON
THAT'S WHERE I BELONG
Text reads “Sixteen Hudson.” Created by Shabnam Rezaei & Aly Jetha.
“Stick to it.”
Eddie looks at a hockey player.
Eddie says, NO. NO. NO.
Toys and clothes lie scattered across a bedroom.
Eddie yells,YES! FOUND IT!
Eddie triumphantly holds up a hockey stick.
Eddie’s mom carries a box as she walks into his room.
She says, EDDIE, YOU DUMPED OUT
YOUR WHOLE CLOSET!
Eddie says, I KNOW!
ISN'T IT GREAT?
BEST OF ALL, I FOUND MY
JORDAN NOLAN HOCKEY STICK.
His mom says, NICE JOB FINDING
SOMETHING IN THIS ROOM.
Eddie says, IT'S FOR SHOW AND SHARE
AT SCHOOL!
SEE? JORDAN NOLAN
AUTOGRAPHED IT HIMSELF!
HE SHOOTS--
[Swoop]
Eddie swings the hockey stick and loses his balance.
He says, WAH-UNGH!
HE SCORES!
[Chuckling]
Eddie’s mom says, THAT'S GREAT, HONEY.
BUT REMEMBER, I ASKED YOU
TO FIND SOME STUFF
FOR THE YARD SALE
THIS AFTERNOON.
Eddie says, I DID!
Eddie gestures to a few toys in a box. His mom arches an eyebrow.
Eddie says, OKAY,
I'LL FIND SOME MORE STUFF
RIGHT AFTER I PUT TOGETHER
MY SHOW AND SHARE.
FOR SCHOOL.
His moms says, WELL PLAYED, EDWARD.
YOUR MARKERS
ARE IN THE KITCHEN.
Eddie leans his hockey stick against a wall. He grabs paper and runs out of his room, slamming the door behind him. The hockey stick falls on top of the donation box.
A poster features pictures of a hockey player.
Eddie says, SEE? JORDAN NOLAN
IS MY FAVE PLAYER EVER!
HE WON THE STANLEY CUP
NOT ONCE BUT TWO TIMES!
Eddie and Sam look at the poster.
Sam says, WOW!
THAT'S PRETTY NEAT--
Eddie says, DO YOU KNOW
HE'S LIKE,
ONE OF THE MOST
POWERFUL PLAYERS
IN THE WHOLE LEAGUE?
PLUS, HIS AUTOGRAPH LOOKS
KINDA LIKE A BIRD IN FLIGHT,
JUST LIKE HOW HE SKATES!
WANNA SEE?
Sam exclaims, NO WAY!
YOU HAVE AN AUTOGRAPH--
Eddie says, BETTER!
AN ACTUAL, REAL-LIFE
AUTOGRAPHED STICK!
COME ON!
[Happy music plays]
Eddie opens his bedroom door. The hockey stick and box are gone.
Eddie says, PRESENTING--
HMM. I LEFT IT RIGHT HERE.
[Tense musical chord]
Sam says, COOL ROOM!
MY MOM MAKES ME
PICK UP MY STUFF.
[Suspenseful music plays]
Eddie digs through a pile of clothes and looks under his bed. He looks in a cupboard.
[Squeak]
Eddie says, WAIT A MINUTE.
OH, NO. MY MOM- SHE TOOK IT
TO THE YARD SALE! AGH!
Eddie’s mom arranges items on a table in front of a building.
Eddie says, MOM!
DID YOU TAKE MY JORDAN NOLAN
HOCKEY STICK?
Eddie’s mom says, I DON'T KNOW.
I JUST GRABBED
YOUR BOX AND LEFT.
I WAS IN SUCH A RUSH.
Eddie flops down on a bean bag.
[Sigh]
His mom says, BUT IF I DID,
I'M SORRY, HONEY.
MAYBE IT HASN'T SOLD YET.
Eddie looks hopeful as he says, YOU THINK?
His mom points and says, THE SPORTS EQUIPMENT
IS OVER--
[Footsteps running]
Eddie says, BOBBY ORR PLAYOFF JERSEY?
[Toss]
Eddie scoffs, GRETZKY ROOKIE CARD?
[Toss]
Eddie says, ORIGINAL BOBBY CLARKE
FRONT TEETH.
[Toss]
Eddie says, BUT NO JORDAN NOLAN STICK.
Sam says, WAIT- LOOK!
Sam picks up a lamp.
A man with glasses says,
BEAUTY, EH?
FIFTY CENTS
AND SHE'S YOURS.
Sam and Eddie sigh.
[Energetic music plays]
Children knock on apartment doors look and gesture like they are playing hockey. They shake their heads as residents bring out a hockey stick, broom and toothpick.
[Knock]
[Knock]
[Knock]
Eddie pushes open a door. His mom looks up from a computer.
[Creak]
Eddie’s mom asks, ANY LUCK?
Eddie says, WE ASKED EVERYBODY,
AND NO ONE'S SEEN IT.
[Upbeat music plays]
His mom says, WELL,
I HAVE ONE MORE IDEA.
[Typing]
Sam and Eddie sit in Eddie’s messy room.
Eddie says, IT'S OVER.
I'VE LOST MY JORDAN NOLAN
HOCKEY STICK FOREVER,
AND NOW I HAVE
NOTHING TO SHOW
FOR SHOW AND SHARE.
Sam says, I DON'T KNOW.
THAT LOOKS PRETTY GOOD.
Sam looks at the Jordan Nolan poster Eddie created.
Eddie says, I GUESS.
BUT WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL
ABOUT A BUNCH
OF CLIPPINGS AND PICTURES?
ANYBODY CAN DO THAT.
Sam says, I GUESS.
Eddie says, IT WAS THE STICK
THAT MADE IT SPECIAL.
[Upbeat music plays]
Eddie says, I MEAN,
THAT'S WHAT HE USED
TO SCORE HIS FIRST EVER
PLAYOFF GOAL.
Eddie imitates swinging a hockey stick and falls.
Eddie says, WAH-- UNGH.
[Thump]
Eddie says, COMMITMENT, PERSEVERANCE,
TEAMWORK-
THAT'S WHAT HOCKEY'S
ALL ABOUT,
AND I HAD THE STICK THAT HELPED
TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.
Sam says, WHOA.
Eddie says, SEE WHAT I MEAN?
Sam says, YEAH, TOTALLY!
AND THAT WAS AWESOME!
YOU DON'T NEED SOME STICK
TO TELL THAT STORY.
YOU JUST NEED YOU!
ALL FIRED UP LIKE THAT!
Eddie says, I GUESS.
THAT'D BE THE SHARE PART,
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE SHOW?
Sam says, YOU CAN SHOW ME!
Eddie says, HUH?
Sam says, SAM WU, SUPERFAN!
I'LL FLASH
THE GOAL LIGHT,
BUZZ THE BUZZER,
ACT LIKE A MASCOT
AND LEAVE THE CROWD
IN HEART-THUMPIN' CHEERS!
COMMITMENT, PERSEVERANCE, TEAMWORK!
JUST LIKE JORDAN NOLAN.
Eddie smiles and says, AND IF HE CAN MAKE IT
ALL THE WAY TO THE NHL,
I GUESS I CAN MAKE IT
THROUGH SHOW AND SHARE.
LET'S DO THIS!
[Upbeat music plays]
Eddie grabs his poster.
Spotlights move back and forth across on the ice in an rink. A man holds a microphone.
A male announcer says,
HELLO, CANADA AND HOCKEY FANS
IN THE UNITED STATES
AND NEWFOUNDLAND!
Jordan Nolan skates and smiles.
Sam shines a flashlight on Jordan Nolan’s picture.
Eddie says, PRESENTING, JORDAN NOLAN.
HE'S WON HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS
AND HELPS OUT KIDS
WITH HIS HOCKEY SCHOOL.
AND HE'S A PROUD
OJIBWE CANADIAN.
RAISED IN GARDEN RIVER
FIRST NATIONS,
JORDAN'S DAD WAS
A COACH IN THE LEAGUE,
Sam grunts as he jumps on a desk.
[Grunt]
Eddie says, AND HIS BROTHER
WAS A PRO, TOO.
(Plays hockey music on organ)
Eddie says, ON THE WAY TO THE TOP,
HE'D THINK ABOUT HIS ROOTS
AND IT HELPED KEEP HIM STRONG.
AND NOW HE GIVES BACK.
Sam walks around a classroom with a flashing red light on his head.
Sam chants, JORDAN,
JORDAN, JORDAN!
Eddie says, WITH THREE NOLAN'S
FIRST NATION HOCKEY SCHOOL,
HE AND HIS FAMILY
TEACH HOCKEY SKILLS
AND ALSO HOW TO LIVE
A POSITIVE AND HEALTHY LIFE.
Sam chants, JORDAN! JORDAN!
Eddie says, UH, THIS IS THE PART WHERE I WAS
GONNA SHOW YOU A STICK, BUT--
Eddie’s mom says, EDDIE!
Eddie’s mom stands at the classroom door.
Eddie says, MOM?
I'M KINDA IN THE MIDDLE OF--
His mom says, YOU ARE NEVER GONNA
BELIEVE THIS.
I'VE GOT A MESSAGE
FOR YOU.
Eddie’s mom throws a USB to Eddie’s teacher. His teacher hooks it up to a projector and Jordan Nolan appears on a screen.
Jordan Nolan says, HEY, EDDIE.
JORDAN NOLAN HERE.
WHAT'S UP?
[Gasping]
[Children whisper]
Jordan says, I JUST WANTED TO SAY,
THANKS FOR YOUR
GREAT PRESENTATION.
IT'S FANS LIKE YOU
WHO INSPIRE ME
TO GO OUT THERE AND GIVE
MY ALL IN EVERY GAME.
SORRY YOU LOST
YOUR HOCKEY STICK,
BUT THANKS FOR THINKIN' OF ME
FOR SHOW AND SHARE.
AND LIKE I ALWAYS SAY,
IF YOU'RE GONNA
DO SOMETHIN',
DO IT ALL THE WAY.
Jordan puts a hand over his heart.
[Thump]
Jordan says, BAAMAAPII, BROTHER.
Eddie says, BAAMAAPII.
[Cheering]
Eddie smiles.
Eddie and his mom walk on a sidewalk.
[Footsteps]
Eddie says, THANKS, MOM!
THIS JUST MIGHT GO DOWN IN THE
SHOW AND SHARE HALL OF FAME!
His mom says, WELL, I HAD TO
DO SOMETHING.
I WAS SO PROUD OF YOU
WORKING SO HARD,
EVEN AFTER
YOUR STICK GOT--
WELL, LOST.
Eddie says, GO AHEAD. SAY IT.
I LOST THE STICK.
I GET IT.
I'LL KEEP MY ROOM CLEANER
FROM NOW ON. PROMISE.
His mom says, MAYBE I'LL GET YOU
TO WRITE THAT DOWN,
AND AUTOGRAPH IT.
[Suspenseful music playing]
[Running footsteps]
Eddie runs to a garden.
Eddie says, MOM!
MY JORDAN NOLAN STICK!
[Gasp]
His mom says, BUT IT'S HOLDING UP
SOMEONE'S TOMATOES!
Eddie says, WELL, LOTS OF THINGS
CAN DO THAT.
The man wearing glasses says, TWENTY-FIVE CENTS,
FINAL OFFER.
[Jingling of coins]
Eddie says, DEAL!
Eddie carries the lamp.
[Laughing]
[Upbeat music plays]
Sixteen Hudson End Credits roll.

[Upbeat music plays]
Kristy stands beside a large piece of paper. On the paper it reads “Steps of the writing process. One: Prewrite has a thought bubble drawn beside it. Two: Drafting has a pencil drawn beside it. Three: Revising has a bandaid drawn beside it. Four: Editing has an eraser drawn beside it. Five: Publishing has a book drawn beside it.”
Kristy says, I HOPE YOU HAD FUN WATCHING THAT
EPISODE OF SIXTEEN HUDSON
WHERE EDDIE LOST
HIS HOCKEY STICK.
Text beneath Kristy reads “Primary one to three. Teacher Kristy.”
She says, DURING THE EPISODE,
WE SAW A LOT OF DIFFERENT
BRAINSTORMING HAPPENING.
THE KIDS WEREN'T
BRAINSTORMING FOR WRITING,
BUT THEY WERE BRAINSTORMING
TO SOLVE A PROBLEM.
WE SAW THE KIDS THOUGHT--
BRAINSTORMED
AND THOUGHT
THEY COULD GO AROUND
AND TALK TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE
ABOUT THE HOCKEY STICK.
EDDIE HAD TO COME UP WITH
A WAY TO SOLVE HIS PROBLEM
WHEN THE STICK
COULDN'T BE FOUND.
HE HAD TO BRAINSTORM IDEAS
ON HOW HE COULD DO
HIS PRESENTATION WITHOUT IT,
AND FINALLY, EDDIE'S MOM
DID SOME BRAINSTORMING
AND THOUGHT OF WAYS
THAT SHE COULD HELP EDDIE
WITH HIS PRESENTATION WHEN
HIS HOCKEY STICK WAS MISSING.
IN THE END, WE KNOW HE FOUND IT,
AND IN A PRETTY FUNNY PLACE.
WHEN WE'RE WRITING,
THE BRAINSTORMING STAGE
IS HOW WE GET STARTED
AND THE PROBLEM WE'RE TRYING
TO SOLVE IS GETTING IDEAS
FOR WHAT WE CAN WRITE ABOUT.
THE BRAINSTORMING IS PART
OF THE WRITING PROCESS,
AND LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT
OUR WRITING PROCESS STEPS.
SO, THESE ARE ALL OF THE STEPS
OF THE WRITING PROCESS.
THERE ARE FIVE STEPS
OF THE WRITING PROCESS.
WE DON'T ALWAYS GO
ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR, FIVE.
SOMETIMES WE GO
ONE, TWO, THREE,
WE REVISE, WE GO BACK AND FORTH
AND KEEP MAKING CHANGES
BEFORE WE FINALLY
PUBLISH OUR PIECE.
THE FIRST STEP, THOUGH,
IS WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON TODAY,
AND THAT IS ALWAYS
THE PRE-WRITING STEP.
YOU CAN'T WRITE
IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN IDEA.
SO, MY LITTLE GRAPHIC
IS A THOUGHT BUBBLE,
BECAUSE THE PRE-WRITING STEP
IS WHEN WE COME UP
WITH OUR IDEAS
OF WHAT WE'RE GOING
TO WRITE ABOUT.
SOMETIMES THIS IS REALLY,
REALLY EASY.
SOMETIMES YOUR TEACHER MIGHT
ACTUALLY GIVE YOU AN IDEA
OF WHAT YOU'RE GOING
TO WRITE ABOUT
AND TELL YOU
SOMETHING SPECIFIC
SO IT'S NOT
TOO MUCH BRAINSTORMING,
WE HAVE NOTHING
TO WRITE ABOUT.
OUR SECOND STEP
IS THE DRAFTING STEP.
THIS IS WHEN WE TAKE OUR IDEAS
THAT WE CAME UP WITH
AND WE TURN THEM INTO OUR
FIRST COPY OF WHAT WE'RE DOING.
SO, IF WE'RE WRITING A POEM,
WE'RE GOING TO TAKE
OUR IDEAS THAT WE PRE-WROTE
AND WRITE A FIRST TRY
OF THE POEM OR A JOURNAL
OR A LETTER OR WHATEVER IT IS
WE'RE WRITING.
ONCE WE HAVE
OUR DRAFT DONE,
WE'RE NOT FINISHED, BECAUSE
WHAT IF WE MADE A MISTAKE?
WHAT IF
IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE?
WHAT IF IT'S JUST
NOT VERY GOOD?
THAT'S WHEN WE'RE GOING TO
GO BACK TO THE REVISION STEP.
WE'RE GOING
TO READ EVERYTHING OVER
AND WE'RE GOING TO TRY
AND MAKE OUR WRITING BETTER.
AFTER WE THINK WE'VE GOT
OUR BEST WRITING,
WE MOVE ON
TO THE EDITING STEP,
WHEN WE'RE GOING TO LOOK
FOR PUNCTUATION AND SPELLING
AND MAKE SURE ALL OF THAT
IS OUR BEST.
AND THEN FINALLY,
IF WE'VE GOT A PIECE OF WRITING
THAT WE THINK
IS WORTH SHARING,
WE MIGHT TAKE THE TIME
TO PUBLISH IT.
WE MIGHT RE-COPY IT, WE MIGHT
TYPE IT ON THE COMPUTER,
WE MIGHT TURN IT INTO A BOOK,
TO MAKE IT OUR VERY BEST.
Kristy points to Prewrite on her list.
She continues, TODAY IS ALL ABOUT
OUR PRE-WRITING.
SO, WE'RE GOING TO COME UP
WITH DIFFERENT STRATEGIES
AND DIFFERENT WAYS WE CAN
BRAINSTORM OUR IDEAS.
BEFORE WE DO THAT,
WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A FEW
MINUTES TO GET UP AND MOVE,
SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SPACE
FOR YOUR BODY BREAK.
A BODY BREAK
IS A GREAT STRATEGY
TO HELP GET
YOUR BRAIN FLOWING,
GET YOUR BLOOD FLOWING,
AND GET READY
TO HAVE IDEAS AND WORK
AFTER YOU'VE BEEN SITTING
FOR A WHILE.
SO, MAKE SURE
YOU GET UP AND MOVE,
AND I'LL SEE YOU BACK
IN A FEW MINUTES
WHEN WE'RE ALL READY
TO LEARN.
Animated sun shines.
(Hip hop music plays)
Graffiti art covers a wall. A boy with black spiky hair appears and drops to the ground. He wears a red plaid jacket over a grey hoodie.
The boys says, YO, WHAT'S UP?
WHAT'S GOIN' ON, MOVERS?
TODAY WE'RE GONNA BE LEARNING
ONE OF THE TASTIEST DANCES
OF ALL TIME.
SAY HELLO TO THE VEGGIE PULL.
HEY!
The boy moves his arm in a circular motion.
[Needle scratching a record sound]
The boy dances.
He says, YOU'RE GONNA TAKE A STEP
TO THE SIDE,
AND A SIDE, AND A SIDE,
THEN YOUR LAST MOVE,
YOU'RE GONNA KICK IT UP,
THEN DOWN.
He brings his knee up and then puts his foot back down.
The boy demonstrates, ONE MORE TIME.
SIDE, AND SIDE, AND SIDE.
KICK IT UP AND DOWN,
AND SIDE!
AND SIDE, AND SIDE.
KICK IT UP AND DOWN.
YOU GUYS KNOW WHAT
THE FEET ARE DOING.
LET'S CHECK IN
WITH THE HANDS.
TAKE YOUR BASKET
AND GATHER YOUR VEGGIES,
AND VEGGIES.
WRAP YOUR ARMS
AROUND YOUR BASKET,
THEN PULL.
ONE MORE TIME.
GRAB YOUR VEGGIES,
GRAB YOUR VEGGIES,
BASKET, AND PULL.
YOU GUYS JUST LEARNED
THE VEGGIE PULL.
WITH THE HANDS
AND FEET TOGETHER.
MUSIC AND FRIENDS?
Laura and a tall boy with glasses dance behind the boy with spiky hair.
They do the veggie pull as they dance.
The boy with spiky hair says, FIVE, SIX, SEVEN!
GRAB YOUR VEGGIES,
HIT, HIT,
AND CIRCLE ARMS, HA!
AND KEEP IT GOING,
GUYS.
HERE WE GO! WOO!
LAST TIME, GUYS!
HEH!
NICE! WOO!
GUESS WHAT, GUYS?
YOU JUST MOVED WITH MICKEEY.
SEE YA!
[Needle scratching a record sound]
An animated sun shines.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kristy sits beside the little round table.
Text beneath her reads “Primary one to three. Teacher Kristy.”
Kristy says, I HOPE YOU ENJOYED
THAT BODY BREAK.
YOU GOT A LITTLE BIT OF ENERGY
BACK AFTER YOU MOVED YOUR BODY.
MOVING OUR BODIES ALWAYS
HELPS OUR BRAINS WORK BETTER,
SO BODY BREAKS
ARE A GREAT TOOL.
IF YOU'RE HAVING
A LITTLE TROUBLE FOCUSING,
IF YOU MOVE AROUND
A LITTLE,
THAT'LL HELP YOU
GET READY TO GO.
WE'RE GOING TO BE WORKING
ON OUR FIRST BRAINSTORMING TOOL,
AND IT'S ONE OF MY VERY,
VERY FAVOURITES.
IT'S CALLED A HEART MAP.
A HEART MAP IS ONE OF
THE FIRST BRAINSTORMING TOOLS
I HAVE MY STUDENTS DO
IN MY CLASS EVERY YEAR,
AND WE KEEP THIS IN THE FRONT
OF OUR JOURNALS.
WHEN YOU LOOK AT A HEART MAP,
THERE'S ALL SORTS
OF DIFFERENT ONES,
BUT REALLY,
IT'S JUST A PIECE OF PAPER
WITH A GIANT HEART
IN THE MIDDLE.
Kristy holds up a piece of paper with a heart drawn on it.
Kristy says, SO, IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE
ANYTHING SPECIAL.
YOU COULD DRAW A HEART ON A PAGE
IN YOUR NOTEBOOK IF YOU WANT TO,
OR I'M SURE YOU COULD FIND A
HEART TO PRINT OUT SOMEWHERE
IF YOU'D LIKE TO.
INSIDE THE HEART MAP,
WE WRITE DOWN ABSOLUTELY
EVERYTHING WE CAN THINK ABOUT
THAT WE KEEP
INSIDE OF OUR HEART.
SO, THESE COULD BE
SPECIAL PEOPLE IN OUR LIVES
LIKE OUR FAMILY MEMBERS
AND OUR FRIENDS.
THESE COULD BE SPECIAL PLACES
WE LOVE TO GO TO
THAT MAKE US FEEL HAPPY
AND MAKE US FEEL SAFE.
IT COULD BE SPECIAL TOYS
WE HAVE
OR THINGS WE LIKE TO DO.
IT COULD BE OUR THINGS
WE LOVE AND CARE ABOUT
THAT ARE REALLY,
REALLY IMPORTANT TO US.
ANYTHING WE HOLD
INSIDE OF OUR HEART-
OUR HOBBIES, OUR PEOPLE.
OUR FAVOURITE BOOKS.
IT ALL GOES IN THERE,
AND WE TRY AND FILL IT UP
AS MUCH AS
WE POSSIBLY CAN.
AND THESE
ARE A GREAT TOOL
BECAUSE IF YOU MAKE
A HEART MAP
AND YOU PUT IT IN THE FRONT
OF YOUR JOURNAL
OR IN YOUR WRITER'S NOTEBOOK,
WHATEVER YOU USE,
WHENEVER YOU'RE STUCK
FOR AN IDEA,
YOU CAN GO BACK AND LOOK
FOR SOMETHING IN YOUR HEART MAP
THAT YOU HAVEN'T
WRITTEN ABOUT BEFORE.
SINCE THE HEART MAP
IS FILLED WITH THINGS
THAT WE CARE ABOUT
THAT ARE IMPORTANT,
THEY'RE ALL TOPICS WE USUALLY
HAVE A LOT TO SAY ABOUT
AND WE HAVE LOTS OF IDEAS
AND WE FIND THEM INTERESTING
AND EXCITING TO WRITE ABOUT.
SO, A HEART MAP IS A GREAT TOOL
IF YOU'VE NEVER DONE ONE BEFORE.
WE'RE GOING TO PRACTISE
MAKING A HEART MAP TOGETHER.
IN JUST A MINUTE,
YOU'RE GONNA WATCH AN EPISODE
OF RAVEN'S QUEST
ABOUT A BOY NAMED MALAKAI.
MALAKAI IS GOING TO TALK TO US
ALL ABOUT HIS LIFE,
THE THINGS HE LIKES TO DO,
THE PLACES HE LIKES TO GO.
HE'S GONNA TELL US
A LITTLE BIT
ABOUT ONE OF
HIS FAVOURITE FOODS.
AS YOU WATCH THIS EPISODE
WITH MALAKAI,
I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT,
IF YOU WERE MALAKAI
AND YOU WERE MAKING A HEART MAP,
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS
THAT YOU THINK
HE WOULD PUT IN THERE?
SO, WHAT ARE
SOME OF THE THINGS,
IF MALAKAI WERE
TO FILL UP A HEART MAP
WITH ALL OF THE THINGS
HE KEEPS IN HIS HEART,
WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?
KEEP YOUR NOTEBOOK HANDY
AND AS WE WATCH THE EPISODE,
JOT DOWN SOME IDEAS,
AND THEN WE'LL
BRAINSTORM TOGETHER
WHAT MALAKAI'S HEART MAP
MIGHT LOOK LIKE.
ENJOY THE EPISODE
OF RAVEN'S QUEST
AND I'LL SEE YOU BACK
IN JUST A FEW MINUTES.
Kristy smiles.
An animated sun shines.
Malakai dances. He wears colourful traditional regalia.
He smiles as he dances.
A male narrator says,
TODAY WE'RE VISITING MALAKAI.
HE'S A DANCER--
[Drum beat plays]
[Boots stomping]
The narrator says, HE'LL GO SHOOT SOME HOOPS.
Malakai shoots a basketball into a basketball net.
[Net rattling]
Malakai closes one eye as he aims his bow. His arrow hits near the centre of a target.
[Thunk]
The narrator says, HE'LL TAKE AIM
FOR A BULL'S-EYE--
Kids exclaim, WHOA!
A gloved hand ladles food into a Styrofoam takeaway container.
The narrator continues, AND CHECK OUT
HIS AUNTIE'S FOOD TRUCK!
Malakai reaches up to take the container from his auntie.
Malakai’s auntie says, THERE YOU GO,
THE FAMOUS INDIAN TACO.
Malakai bounces on one foot by a pink food truck.
A voice yells, LET'S GO!
[Cheerful music plays]
Animated mountains pop up on green hills. Pictures of children hang with clothing pins from two lines. Pictures slide along the lines.
[Raven squawks]
Text reads “Raven’s Quest”
[Speaking Mi'kmaq language]
Malakai stands in tall grass by the edge of a forest.
Text reads “Malakai.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Malakai says, I AM MALAKAI
AND I'M ELEVEN YEARS OLD.
I AM MI'KMAQ AND I COME
FROM MEMBERTOU FIRST NATION
IN SYDNEY, NOVA SCOTIA.
A circle indicates Membertou First Nation on an animated map of Canada.
[Swoosh]
A woman wearing glasses holds a grey cat.
Malakai says, THIS IS MY MOM, CANDICE.
Candace says, HI!
Malakai says, MY CLAN NAME-
GUESS WHAT IT IS.
Malakai holds up a piece of paper with the word “Jake’J.”
A drawing of a lobster appears below that name.
Malakai says, JAKE'J.
THAT MEANS LOBSTER
IN MI'KMAQ. JAKE'J.
Text reads “Lobster.”
[Squeak]
Malakai says, WE'RE THE LOBSTER CLAN.
[Giggling]
An animated pink lobster dances under Malakai.
[Tapping]
Malakai says, DON'T MESS WITH US!
[Laughing]
The grey cat sits on a stool. To her left, text reads “Malaki Cam.”
Text below her reads “Malawi.”
Malakai says, THIS IS MY CAT, MALAWI.
SHE'S A BLUE CORNISH REX.
SHE HAS REALLY WAVY FUR.
PEOPLE THINK
SHE'S KINDA FUNNY,
BUT I THINK SHE'S
KINDA CUTE.
[Meow]
Malakai sits on a sofa. A young boy wearing a yellow shirt holds an action figure. A boy with short hair and glasses wears an orange shirt as he draws. A girl with glasses looks at a handheld device.
Malakai says, THIS IS MY FAMILY.
THIS IS MY BABY
BROTHER ROWAN.
Rowan smiles.
Malakai says, THIS IS MY BROTHER, CHEY.
Text below the boy in the orange shirt reads “Cheyenne.”
Chey says, HI.
Malakai says, AND THAT'S MY SISTER.
WHAT'S UP, ASIA?
Text appears beside the girl with glasses. It reads “Malaysia.”
Asia replies, NOTHIN',
JUST PLAYING MY GAME.
Malakai dances on long grass.
Malakai says, I'M DANCING
TRADITIONAL DANCE.
WITH THE TRADITIONAL,
YOU JUST TAP YOUR FEET TWICE
AND LIKE, KEEP GOING.
EVER SINCE I WAS SEVEN,
I'VE BEEN DOING
TRADITIONAL DANCING.
Spotlight create circles on grass as dancers celebrate.
[Dancers cheer]
Malakai says, I'M REALLY PROUD
TO BE MI'KMAQ.
Malakai walks into a blue room.
Malakai says, THIS IS MY ROOM.
I WANNA SHOW YOU SOMETHING.
[Energetic music plays]
Malakai picks up a basket ball.
THIS IS A HARLEM
GLOBETROTTER BALL.
I AM REALLY INTO BASKETBALL.
IT HAS ALL THE SIGNATURES ON IT.
THESE ARE ALL MY TROPHIES
THAT I WON.
I GOT A HOCKEY TROPHY,
THIS IS A SUMMER GAMES MEDAL.
THE SUMMER GAMES MEDALS,
THEY'RE KINDA LIKE THE OLYMPICS
FOR NATIVES.
THIS YEAR THEY WERE
REALLY COMPETITIVE,
AND WE GOT BRONZE.
Malakai points to a painting of trees and a starry sky.
He says, MY AUNTIE NELL
MADE THIS FOR ME.
I LOVE THE TEXTURE.
IT TOOK HER LIKE ONE TO TWO
WEEKS TO MAKE THIS PAINTING.
[Shouting]
[Ball bounces]
Text beside a boy with short brown hair reads “TJ.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Malakai says, TJ IS MY BEST FRIEND.
WE GO TO THE SAME SCHOOL.
TJ says, OOH!
Malakai says, WE HANG OUT,
WE PLAY LOTS OF BASKETBALL,
PLAY GAMES.
[Basketball hits net]
Malakai says, WE HAVE LOTS OF FUN TOGETHER.
TJ says, GO!
Malakai says, I GOT A NEW
BASKETBALL NET,
AND IT KINDA GIVES ME ADVANTAGE.
[Rattle of ball in net]
Malakai and TJ walk beside a fence. They walk to the glass doors of a building.
Malakai says, THIS IS OUR YOUTH CENTRE.
THIS IS WHERE ME AND TJ
LIKE TO HANG OUT.
THERE'S LOTS OF
COOL ACTIVITIES.
THERE'S A LOT OF
FUN THINGS TO DO
AT THE YOUTH CENTRE.
TJ leans towards Malakai’s computer.
TJ says, OH, YOUR SHIP'S SO SMALL.
MINE'S HUGE.
Malakai gets up and looks at TJ’s screen.
[Scrap of chair legs]
Malakai says, WE CAN PLAY COMPUTERS,
PING-PONG, POOL, ARCHERY.
[Chime from computer game]
A man wearing a baseball hat and red hoodie holds a bow and arrow.
TJ and Malakai stand beside him.
The man says, WE'RE GONNA START FROM--
ABOUT 20 FEET OUT.
Text appears beside the man. It reads “Alex.”
Malakai says, ALEX SETS EVERYTHING UP
AND HE TEACHES US
HOW TO STAND PROPERLY.
[Twang of bow string]
[Thunk]
[Woo!]
Malakai says, ARCHERY WAS REALLY IMPORTANT
TO MY ANCESTORS.
THAT'S HOW
THEY GOT THEIR FOOD.
IT TAKES A LOT OF PRACTICE.
Malakai tells TJ, YEP. GOOD JOB.
Malakai says, AND I'M PROUD THAT I LEARNED
HOW TO DO THIS TECHNIQUE.
[Thunk]
[Whoa!]
Alex says, GOOD JOB.
Malakai says, YEP!
A sign on a white building reads “Membertou Heritage Park.”
Malakai holds the Malakai Cam.
Malakai says, WE'RE HERE AT THE
MEMBERTOU HERITAGE PARK.
I LIKE GOING TO
MEMBERTOU'S HERITAGE PARK
BECAUSE OF ALL THE HISTORY,
WATCHING THE HISTORY MOVIES.
THESE ARE LIKE, MY ANCESTORS.
Malakai looks at black and white photos.
He continues, MEMBERTOU WAS A SWAMP,
AND THEN THEY LIKE, KINDA FIXED IT UP.
Malakai touches a brown fur pelt.
An animated bear waves.
Malakai says, THIS IS BEAR FUR.
THIS IS ACTUALLY COOL.
[Slide whistle]
Malakai, Chey and TJ stand outside the building.
Malakai says, LET'S GO SEE--
THE BACK!
ALL RIGHT.
[Running feet]
Malakai stops by a white bust on a pedestal.
Malakai says, HERE IS ONE OF THE CHIEFS,
DON MARSHALL.
AND HERE'S GRAND CHIEF MEMBERTOU,
WHO LOOKS AWESOME.
[Mumble of children’s voices]
Malakai says, IS THAT ALL THE STATUES?
ALL RIGHT.
LET'S GO SEE
THE SWEAT LODGE.
THIS IS HOW IT LOOKS.
AND THEY HAVE LIKE,
A BUNCH OF FIRE,
AND IT GETS SUPER HOT.
A SWEAT LODGE
IS WHERE YOU GO TO PRAY.
CAN'T WAIT FOR
THESE INDIAN TACOS.
I'M PUMPED FOR THEM!
Malakai and TJ run to a pink food truck.
Malakai’s auntie asks, THE USUAL?
Malakai and TJ say, YEAH.
Malakai says, MY AUNTIE NIKKI
HAS A FOOD TRUCK.
THAT'S WHERE ME AND TJ
GET OUR FAVOURITE SNACKS.
Auntie Nikki puts together a taco.
Malakai explains, THE INDIAN TACO
IS JUST FRY BREAD
WITH CHILI, VEGETABLES,
AND ANY KIND OF TOPPING
YOU WOULD LIKE ON IT.
TJ says, MMM.
Malakai says, THAT LOOKS GOOD.
[Squeak]
MY AUNTIE GOES TO POW-WOWS
JUST TO FEED EVERYONE.
An animated raven gives a thumb’s up with its wing.
[Ting]
Malakai says, THERE'S A LOT OF OTHER
FOOD TRUCKS
BUT I THINK HERS IS THE BEST.
I USUALLY GET DISCOUNTS.
[Chuckling]
Auntie Nikki says, THERE YOU GO,
THE FAMOUS INDIAN TACO.
Malakai and TJ sit at a table in Malakai’s kitchen and eat their tacos.
[Rustling]
Malakai says, MY PEOPLE KNOW THE INDIAN TACO
AS THE L'NU TACO.
Text reads “L’nu taco.”
Malakai says, IT'S AMAZING.
[Drum music plays]
Malakai dances.
Malakai says, MY AND MY FAMILY
GO ON THE POW-WOW TAIL
LIKE FIFTEEN TIMES EACH SUMMER.
A group of people dance.
A man announces, POW-WOW TIME!
Malakai says, I DO MY DANCING BECAUSE SOME
KIDS DON'T DO THE DANCING
AND IF THEY SEE ME DOING IT,
THEY'RE PROBABLY
GONNA WANNA DO IT,
AND IT'S GOOD TO KEEP ON
THE TRADITION.
Malakai stands in his bedroom. He holds a hanger with his regalia on it.
Malakai says, THIS IS MY REGALIA.
MOST OF IT WAS MADE
BY MY AUNTIE CLAIRE.
THIS IS A CHOKER.
THIS IS A REDALLION,
THIS GOES ON MY FOREHEAD.
THE THING THAT I MADE
WITH MY MOM
WAS THIS KNIFE HOLDER.
IT HAS A KNIFE IN IT
MADE OUT OF BONE FROM A BEAR.
EVERYBODY'S, UM, REGALIA
IS REALLY UNIQUE.
A man with a long dark braid and glasses wears a red shirt. He holds a headpiece with feathers.
Text reads “Jeff.”
Malakai says, JEFF IS MY FRIEND.
HE'S BEEN DANCING
FOR A WHILE.
HE HAS A LOT OF REGALIA.
AND HE'S LENDING ME THIS SPECIAL
REGALIA FOR MY DANCE TODAY.
WE DO A LOT
OF POW-WOWS TOGETHER.
Jeff says, HE'S SHOWING PROUDNESS.
WHENEVER HE DANCES,
HE DOES IT WITH GREAT HONOUR
AND GREAT RESPECT.
WOW. THAT IS AMAZING.
THAT IS PERFECT.
Malakia dances with Asia, Chey and Rowan.
[Chanting, drumming]
Malakai says, ALL MY BROTHERS
AND SISTER DANCE.
MY GRAMMY SARAH DENNY,
SHE TAUGHT US HOW.
A man says, ALLOW THAT DRUM
TO CONTROL YOU.
Malakai says, WHEN I'M DANCING,
I'M HELPING THE ELDERS HEAL.
[Bells jangle, drum beats]
A man sings as Malakai dances.
Malakai says, I DANCE FOR ELDERS
THAT CAN'T DANCE,
AND I PRAY FOR THEM.
I DO IT FOR MY ANCESTORS,
THE COMMUNITY.
I FEEL GOOD WHEN I DO IT.
Malakai smiles as he dances.
[Drumming]
The drummer says, TAHO!
Malakai says, NMU'LTES, SEE YOU LATER!
[Upbeat music plays]
End credits for Raven’s Quest roll.
[Chirping, flapping, squawking]
[Whee!]
Logo appears for “TVO Kids”
[Giggling]
[Squeaking, blink, blink]
Logo appears for “Apartment Eleven Productions.”
The animated sun shines.
Kristy sits by the round table.
Text reads “Primary one to three. Teacher Kristy.”
[Relaxing music plays]
Kristy says, I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THAT EPISODE
OF RAVEN'S QUEST
AND ALL OF THE THINGS MALAKAI
HAD A CHANCE TO SHARE WITH US
ABOUT HIS LIFE.
AS I WAS WATCHING THAT EPISODE
OF RAVEN'S QUEST,
I WAS THINKING ALL ABOUT
THE DIFFERENT THINGS
THAT MALAKAI MIGHT WRITE DOWN
IF HE WERE CREATING A HEART MAP.
WHAT THE THINGS ARE HE SHARED
THAT WERE SPECIAL TO HIM.
Kristy holds up a piece of paper with a heart and words on it.
[Upbeat music plays]
She says, SO, I TOOK A FEW MINUTES
AND I CREATED MY OWN HEART MAP
FOR MALAKAI.
SO, I THOUGHT ABOUT ALL
OF HIS SPECIAL ACTIVITIES.
SO, I WROTE DOWN ARCHERY
IS SOMETHING HE ENJOYS.
I WROTE DOWN ON THE OTHER SIDE
HE LIKES GOING TO POW-WOWS.
I WROTE DOWN HE ENJOYS SPENDING
TIME AT THE YOUTH CENTRE.
HE TOLD US ALL ABOUT
HIS AUNT'S FOOD TRUCK
AND THE INDIAN TACOS SHE MAKES
ON FRIED BREAD.
AND THEN HE TOLD US ABOUT
HOW MUCH HE ENJOYS
TRADITIONAL DANCING
AND THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS
HE LIKES TO DO
AND HE'S REALLY GOOD AT.
SO, THAT'S NOT
A VERY FULL HEART MAP.
USUALLY, IF I WERE TO DO THIS
FOR SCHOOL OR IF MY STUDENTS
WERE TO DO IT,
WE WOULD FILL IT.
WE WOULD HAVE IT CRAMMED
WITH PICTURES AND WORDS.
THAT'S ANOTHER THING
THAT'S IMPORTANT TO KNOW
ABOUT THE HEART MAP.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO
JUST DO WORDS IN HERE.
YOU CAN ALSO USE PICTURES
TO STATE YOUR IDEAS.
DOESN'T REALLY MATTER
'CAUSE THIS ISN'T THE STORY.
THIS IS THE BRAINSTORM.
SO, A HEART MAP IS ONE TOOL
FOR BRAINSTORMING,
AND THERE'S LOTS OF OTHER WAYS
WE CAN GET OUR IDEAS OUT
AND GET OUR BRAINS WARMED UP
TO DO SOME WRITING.
SO, OTHER THINGS WE CAN DO
TO GET OUR IDEAS FLOWING
AND GET OUR BRAINS WARMED UP
IS TALKING TO FRIENDS.
SO, IF YOU'RE GETTING READY
TO WRITE, SHARING YOUR IDEAS
AND HEARING WHAT THEIR IDEAS
FOR WHAT THEY'RE GOING
TO WRITE ABOUT ARE,
IS A GREAT WAY
TO START THINKING.
OFTEN IN MY CLASS,
I'LL HAVE MY STUDENTS SHARE
WHAT THEY'RE GOING TO WRITE
ABOUT BEFORE THEY GO GET READY,
AND THEN THAT'LL HELP STUDENTS
WHO DIDN'T HAVE
AN IDEA OF THEIR OWN
BECAUSE IT MIGHT REMIND THEM
OF SOMETHING
THEY WANT TO TELL ME ABOUT
IN THEIR WRITING.
OTHER THINGS WE CAN DO
ARE MAKING LISTS.
LISTS ARE A GREAT TOOL AND
YOU CAN HAVE A SPECIFIC TOPIC.
IN JUST A FEW MINUTES,
WE'RE GOING TO PRACTICE--
WE'RE GONNA TAKE A LOOK
AT MAKING A LIST AND PRACTICE
ON HEART MAPPING.
YOU CAN USE ALL SORTS OF
DIFFERENT GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS.
MIND MAPS ARE A GREAT ONE,
WHERE YOU PUT A WORD
IN THE MIDDLE
AND YOU MAKE LITTLE BUBBLES
COMING OFF OF IT
WITH DIFFERENT IDEAS.
YOU CAN ALSO DICTATE
USING TEXT-TO-SPEECH
TO WRITE DOWN YOUR IDEAS.
SO, THOSE ARE ALL DIFFERENT WAYS
YOU CAN BRAINSTORM.
THIS IS REALLY THE MOST
IMPORTANT PART OF WRITING.
YOU CAN'T DO THE REST OF IT
IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN IDEA.
SO, WHEN IT COME
TO BRAINSTORMING,
IT'S ALWAYS GOOD
TO TAKE YOUR TIME
AND WRITE DOWN MORE IDEAS
THAN YOU'RE GOING TO NEED.
THERE'S NEVER
TOO MANY IDEAS.
SOMETIMES WE'LL HAVE TO TAKE
THEM OUT IN OUR GOOD COPY,
BUT THAT'S FINE.
IT'S MUCH EASIER TO WRITE
IF I'VE GOT TOO MUCH TO SAY
THAN IF I DON'T HAVE
ENOUGH TO SAY.
I'D LIKE YOU TO THINK ABOUT,
AS WE WORK THROUGH THESE,
WHICH TOOLS DO YOU THINK
WOULD WORK FOR YOU?
I REALLY LOVE HEART MAPPING,
I'VE TOLD YOU ABOUT THAT,
AND I LIKE BRAINSTORMING,
BUT MAYBE FOR SOME OF YOU,
A LIST OR THE IDEA
OF TALKING TO A FRIEND
WOULD WORK BETTER FOR YOU.
IT'S ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA
TO PRACTICE DIFFERENT WAYS
SO YOU KNOW
WHICH BRAINSTORMING TOOLS
ARE THE ONES THAT HELP YOU
THINK OF YOUR IDEAS
AND GET YOU WARMED UP
AND READY TO WRITE.
The animated sun shines.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kristy holds a pen over a piece of paper. The title on the paper reads “My favourite foods.” Her list includes “pizza, sushi, chicken korma, fajitas, chocolate covered potato chips, scrambled eggs, salted caramel ice cream and grilled cheese sandwiches.”
Kristy says, WE ARE GOING TO BE
TAKING A LOOK
AT OUR OWN DIFFERENT STRATEGIES
FOR BRAINSTORMING.
THE FIRST ONE I'VE GOT HERE
IS A TOOL THAT'S CALLED A LIST.
I'M SURE YOU HAVE
MADE A LIST BEFORE.
I FINISHED THIS LIST CALLED
"MY FAVOURITE FOODS"
AND I BRAINSTORMED A LIST
OF SOME OF MY FAVOURITE FOODS.
SO, IF I WANTED TO WRITE
ABOUT THAT TOPIC,
I HAVE LOTS OF IDEAS HERE.
SO, I STARTED AND I THOUGHT
ABOUT THE FOODS I LIKE.
SO, I HAVE PIZZA, I HAVE SUSHI,
I HAVE CHICKEN KORMA,
I HAVE FAJITAS.
I HAVE A CHOCOLATE STORE
THAT'S REALLY CLOSE TO MY HOUSE,
AND IT MAKES
CHOCOLATE-COVERED POTATO CHIPS.
AND THEY'RE PRETTY DELICIOUS.
FOR SNACKS, I'D PROBABLY
PUT THAT ONE AT NUMBER ONE.
I LIKE SCRAMBLED EGGS, I LIKE
SALTED CARAMEL ICE CREAM,
I LIKE GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICHES.
SO, THIS IS A LIST THAT I DID
FOR BRAINSTORMING.
THE LIST WAS A LITTLE BIT EASIER
BECAUSE I HAD A SPECIFIC TOPIC
I WAS BRAINSTORMING ABOUT.
SO, WHEN YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC TOPIC,
THAT CAN HELP
MAKE THINGS EASIER.
SO, IF YOU'RE TRYING TO THINK
ABOUT SOMETHING TO WRITE ABOUT
AND YOU'RE MAKING A LIST,
TRY TO THINK
OF SOMETHING SPECIFIC,
LIKE "MY FAVOURITE FOODS"
OR "MY FAVOURITE ACTIVITIES"
OR "MY FAVOURITE PEOPLE".
THOSE ARE ALL
DIFFERENT THINGS
THAT YOU COULD THINK
TO WRITE ABOUT.
AND REMEMBER, WHEN WE WRITE
ABOUT THE THINGS WE LIKE,
IT MAKES IT MUCH EASIER TO WRITE.
WE'RE GOING TO
WORK TOGETHER NOW,
AND I'M GOING TO CREATE
MY VERY OWN HEART MAP.
[Flipping page]
Kristy turns the page. A blank “Heart map organizer” has a drawing of a heart and lines around it.
Kristy says, SO, WE THOUGHT ABOUT MALAKAI
AND WHAT HIS HEART MAP
MIGHT LOOK LIKE.
AND NOW, I'M GOING TO CREATE
MY VERY OWN HEART MAP.
SO, A HEART MAP SAYS, "THINK OF
ALL YOUR LIKES AND INTERESTS.
"RECORD THESE IDEAS IN YOUR HEART.
"USE WORDS AND SYMBOLS
TO SHOW MEANING."
SO, A REALLY IMPORTANT THING TO
KNOW WHEN YOU'RE BRAINSTORMING
IS YOU DON'T ALWAYS HAVE
TO USE WORDS TO BRAINSTORM.
IT CAN BE PICTURES.
SO, I'M GOING TO THINK ABOUT--
AND THIS IS PRETTY TRICKY
BECAUSE I HAVE A LOT
OF THINGS I LIKE,
SO I'M GONNA START--
I'LL WRITE, "MY FAMILY".
WELL, LET'S SEE.
LIKES AND INTERESTS.
Kristy draws a house.
She continues, OH, I REALLY LIKE MY HOUSE
AND DOING WORK ON MY HOUSE.
MAYBE I'LL DRAW A LITTLE PATH
FROM MY FRONT DOOR
AND I'LL DRAW SOME FLOWERS
'CAUSE I REALLY LIKE GARDENING.
NOW, I WANT YOU TO NOTICE
AS I'M DRAWING,
THIS IS NOT MY VERY BEST ARTWORK
THAT I HAVE EVER DONE.
I'M JUST DRAWING TO
REMIND MYSELF OF THIS IDEA.
SO, IF I'M TRYING TO THINK
OF SOMETHING TO WRITE ABOUT,
I CAN REALLY LOOK
AT THAT PICTURE QUICKLY
WITH SOME LITTLE
SCRIBBLY-LOOKING FLOWERS,
BUT IT MAKES SENSE TO ME,
AND THAT'S THE IMPORTANT THING.
THIS HEART MAP ORGANIZER
IS NOT FOR SOMEONE ELSE.
THIS IS FOR YOU.
SO, MY FAMILY IS IN THERE.
UM, LET'S SEE.
I'M GONNA DRAW SOME WAVES
AND I'M GONNA WRITE
THE WORD "SWIMMING".
THAT'S SOMETHING
I LOVE TO DO.
UM, I REALLY LIKE
GOING OUT ON MY KAYAK,
SO THAT'S SOMETHING ELSE
I REALLY LIKE TO DO.
I'M LUCKY ENOUGH THAT I LIVE
CLOSE TO THE WATER
SO THOSE ARE THINGS
I GET TO DO.
UM, I AM GONNA DRAW--
LET'S SEE. I'LL DRAW...
I HAVE TWO CATS, SO I'LL DRAW
TWO LITTLE CAT HEADS.
AND THIS DOESN'T ALL
HAVE TO BE DRAWING,
BUT I CAN DRAW--
I'M GONNA WRITE UP HERE,
I'LL WRITE,
"SANDY...
"AND THOR".
THOSE ARE MY DOGS
THAT I HAVE.
YOU KNOW WHAT, THOUGH?
I MIGHT REALLY LIKE
TO WRITE ABOUT MY OLD DOGS
THAT I DON'T HAVE ANYMORE-
WALTER AND CORBIN.
THEY WERE REALLY, REALLY
SPECIAL DOGS AND I MISS THEM,
SO MAYBE THAT'S SOMETHING
I COULD WRITE ABOUT.
WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES?
OH, I LOVE READING,
SO I COULD WRITE "READING"
AND IF I WANTED TO I COULD DO
A LITTLE PICTURE OF A BOOK.
UM, LET'S SEE.
OH! I LOVE TEACHING,
AND THIS YEAR
AND NEXT YEAR,
I'M TEACHING KINDERGARTEN
AND THAT'S A LOT
OF FUN TO DO.
KINDERGARTEN.
I THINK I'M GONNA WRITE--
OH, "KINDERGARTEN"
DOESN'T HAVE A D ON THE END.
THAT'S OKAY 'CAUSE THIS
IS MY MIND MAP.
SO, I WROTE ABOUT SOME THINGS
I LIKE TO DO.
READING--
I LIKE TO DO CRAFTS.
THINK I'M GONNA WRITE "CRAFTS"
INSTEAD OF DRAWING A PICTURE
'CAUSE THERE'S A LOT OF
DIFFERENT CRAFTS I LIKE TO DO.
UM, I LOVE-- ONE OF MY OTHER
HOBBIES OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL
IS I REALLY LIKE
PERFORMING IN PLAYS.
SO, I'M GONNA DRAW--
UM, THERE'S SOME MASKS
THAT YOU SEE FOR THEATRE-
THE MASKS OF COMEDY...
AND TRAGEDY.
SO, ONE SAYS HAPPY.
AND THEY'RE SYMBOLS
FOR THEATRE,
SO I KNOW THAT MAKES ME
THINK ABOUT PLAYS.
UM, I LIKE SINGING,
AND I PALY A COUPLE
OF INSTRUMENTS,
SO I COULD PUT THAT DOWN.
MUSIC, DRAMA.
LET'S SEE.
WHAT OTHER STUFF
DO I LIKE? HMM.
I LIKE GOING FOR WALKS.
"..FOR WALKS".
BUT I LIVE IN A REALLY NICE TOWN
CALLED PERTH
AND I REALLY LOVE MY TOWN,
SO I MIGHT WANNA WRITE
ABOUT MY TOWN
AND SOME OF THE REALLY NICE
PLACES THERE ARE TO VISIT HERE.
UM, I LIKE TALKING
WITH MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY,
SO MAYBE I'LL MAKE A LITTLE
SPEECH BUBBLE FOR TALKING.
OH, I DIDN'T DRAW ONE
OF MY VERY FAVOURITE THINGS
THAT IN THE MORNING,
I'M NOT SURE ANYBODY
WANTS TO BE AROUND ME
UNTIL I'VE HAD A CUP OF TEA.
'CAUSE I'M A BIT OF A
GRUMPASAURUS WITHOUT ONE.
SO, LET'S LOOK. I TOLD ABOUT
SOME SPECIAL PEOPLE.
MY FAMILY. I COULD WRITE
MY FRIENDS IN HERE TOO.
AND I WROTE
ABOUT MY KINDERGARTENS,
KINDERGARTENERS.
I WROTE ABOUT PLACES.
OH, ANOTHER PLACE I REALLY LIKE
IS SCHOOL, WHERE I TEACH.
AT ST. FRANCIS,
I'LL WRITE THAT DOWN.
LET'S SEE. WHAT ELSE?
I WROTE ABOUT SOME ACTIVITIES
I LIKE TO DO.
SO, USING THIS STRATEGY,
THIS HEART MAPPING,
YOU'LL SEE
I DIDN'T TAKE VERY LONG
AND I HAVE PUT
SO MANY IDEAS DOWN
ABOUT THINGS
THAT I CARE ABOUT
AND THINGS THAT I
REALLY, REALLY LIKE.
THE HEART MAPPING
IS A REALLY GOOD ONE
AND LIKE I SAID BEFORE,
I KEEP THIS IN MY NOTEBOOK
OR HAVE MY STUDENTS KEEP THIS
IN THEIR NOTEBOOKS
SO THAT WHENEVER THEY'RE
TRYING TO THINK ABOUT IDEAS
AND WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT,
THEY CAN LOOK BACK
AT THIS PAPER
AND THINK ABOUT SOME
OF THEIR FAVOURITE THINGS.
AND THE OTHER THING ABOUT
A HEART MAP THAT I LOVE
IS IT'S NEVER FINISHED.
IF I GOT A NEW BICYCLE,
I COULD COME IN HERE
LATER IN THE YEAR...
OOH, THIS MIGHT BE TRICKY.
I SHOULD'VE THOUGHT ABOUT THIS
BEFORE I PICKED WHAT TO DRAW.
A BIKE IS NOT THE EASIEST.
ALL RIGHT, THAT SORT OF
LOOKS LIKE A BICYCLE.
SO, DURING THE YEAR,
I CAN COME BACK AT ANY TIME
AND ADD TO THIS.
SO, TRY AND CREATE
YOUR OWN HEART MAP
IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR IDEAS
FOR WHAT YOU CAN WRITE ABOUT.
The animated sun shines.
[Whee!]
The “TVO Kids” logo appears.
[Giggling]
A logo appears for “Apartment Eleven.”
Text reads “Original. Presented in collaboration with Cirque du Soleil Images.”
A girl with a thick brown braid and a white shirt stands at the bottom of a staircase.
[Birds chirp]
The girls says, WE'VE BEEN TRAINING
FOR A LONG TIME TO DO THIS,
AND ARE ALWAYS WATCHED
BY OUR PRO COACH.
SO, PLEASE DON'T TRY ANY
OF THE MOVES YOU SEE US DO.
NOW, ENJOY THE SHOW!
She waves.
[Beeping]
An image of Nick, a boy with dark curly hair, is connected to an image of Ella, a girl with long, straight black hair, by blue stars. Text reads “Connecting to” as the stars turn yellow.
[Ding]
Text reads “Connected.”
[Sigh]
[Dramatic music plays]
Nick says, OKAY, HOW DO WE DO THIS?
Ella says, EASY.
WE SOLVE A MYSTERY.
Nick says, ELLA, WE HAVE TO FIGURE OUT
THE DEAL WITH THE SCARVES
BY THE END OF THE DAY
OR THE VOICE SAID THERE
WILL BE CONSEQUENCES.
Ella says, OH. SO, NOT EASY.
Nick says, AND WE'RE SUPPOSED TO WORK
ON THE BULLETIN.
BUT I DON'T THINK WE CAN.
Ella says, NOBODY'S EVER BAILED
ON THE BULLETIN BEFORE.
Nick says, I KNOW. AND IT'S AXEL'S EDITION.
Ella says, MAYBE HE WON'T NEED
EVERYBODY'S HELP?
Text reads “Connecting to.”
Images of Rosa, Phoenix, Nick, Celeste, Max, Ella, Axel and April appear over and under the text.
[Chiming]
Eight teenagers appear in rectangles.
April has long blonde hair and wears a yellow hoodie.
Axel has short blond hair and wears a blue shirt.
Nick has black curly hair and wears a blue and grey hoodie.
Max has short brown hair and sits at a piano.
Phoenix wears her brown hair in long braids and wears a yellow hoodie.
Rosa has long, straight brown hair and a yellow hoodie.
Celeste wears her brown hair in a ponytail on the left side of her head. She sits in front of a chalkboard.
Ella has long, straight brown hair and wears a yellow hoodie.
Axel says, GUYS,
I NEED EVERYONE'S HELP,
BECAUSE FOR MY EDITION,
WE'RE DOING A SHOWCASE.
IT'LL BE JUST LIKE
WE DID AT BTA.
AND I'VE GOT EVERYTHING
FIGURED OUT.
IT'S GONNA BE BIG,
SPECTACULAR,
GRANDIOSE.
DID I MENTION BIG?
Nick says, OR--
AND HEAR ME OUT--
WE DO THE OPPOSITE.
Ella says, YEAH!
SMALL. INTIMATE.
JUST A FEW PEOPLE.
Axel looks disappointed.
Ella says, LET'S SAY, SIX?
Axel says, WHAT? I--
I ALREADY TOLD
MS. MARTEL.
I'VE EVEN GOT A THEME!
"CIRCUS IN THE STARS".
Ella says, DID YOU SAY "SCARVES"?
Axel says, UH, NO.
IT'S STARS.
WHY WOULD IT BE SCARVES?
Celeste says, THAT ALL SOUNDS AMAZING.
JUST TELL US WHAT YOU NEED.
Nick says, ACTUALLY--
ELLA AND I HAVE
SOMETHING ELSE TO DO TODAY.
Ella says, SOMETHING IMPORTANT.
Axel asks, WHAT COULD BE MORE IMPORTANT
THAN THE BULLETIN?
[Scoffing]
Axel continues, AND THE WHOLE POINT
OF DOING THE SHOWCASE
WAS TO DO SOMETHING GREAT, TOGETHER.
[Sad music plays]
Nick says, I'M SORRY, AXEL.
BUT YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE US
IF WE TOLD YOU.
Axel looks disbelieving.
Ella says, YEAH. SORRY, AXEL.
Ella and Nick turn off their cameras. Their images disappear.
[Click, click]
April, Axel, Max, Phoenix, Rosa and Celeste look unhappy.
[Exciting music plays]
A girl hangs upside down in a hoop. Max flips. Ella hula hoops. Nick dances in a chair.
Text reads “Nicholas. April. Celeste. Axel. Ella. Rosa. Max. Phoenix.”
“Cirque du Soleil. Big Top Academy. School’s Out Edition.”
[Tense music plays]
Ella and Nick look unhappy as they throw a blue scarf back and forth.
[Swish, swish, swish, swish, swish, swish, swish]
Ella says, IT'S OFFICIAL.
THIS ISN'T WORKING.
WE NEED TO TRY
SOMETHING ELSE
BECAUSE TICK TOCK.
AND I DO NOT WANNA FIND OUT
WHAT THE CONSEQUENCES ARE.
Nick says, WHAT WE NEED IS TO GET
EVERYONE TOGETHER.
Ella says, BUT EVERYONE'S DOING
THE SHOWCASE.
WAIT, WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?
WE STOP THE SHOWCASE?
Nick says, RIGHT NOW IT DOESN'T LOOK
LIKE WE HAVE A CHOICE.
I--I JUST REALLY WANTED
TO FIGURE THIS OUT
WITHOUT MESSING UP
AXEL'S EDITION.
Ella holds a hand to her face.
[Sigh]
Ella says, EIGHT SCARVES,
EIGHT OF US WORKING
ON THE BULLETIN
AND WHATEVER YOU AND ME
ARE DOING NOW
OBVIOUSLY ISN'T WORKING
WITH JUST US.
Nick says, I KNOW.
Text reads “Showstopper Challenge.”
[Spinning noise]
Max smiles as he stands in front of a trampoline.
[Energetic music plays]
Max says, WELCOME TO THE
SHOWSTOPPER CHALLENGE.
I WAS CHALLENGED
BY THE ONLY PERSON
TO EVER BAIL
FROM A SHOWCASE—
Image of Nick appears and disappears.
[Boing]
Max continues, THAT WOULD BE NICK ZOLTA--
TO ONE UP HIS ACT.
WHICH, FOR ME,
IS NO CHALLENGE.
SURE, HE CAN SHOOT HOOPS.
BUT CAN HE SHOOT HOOPS--
ON A TRAMPOLINE?
Max gets on the trampoline and zips the safety net shut behind him. He jumps and flips while holding a ball. He jumps and puts the ball into a net again and again.
Max laughs, HA!
[Cheering, applause]
Max says, HAHA!
TOO BAD NO ONE IS JUDGING,
'CAUSE THIS IS EASILY
A 9.8, MAYBE EVEN A 10
IF THEY'RE GIVING OUT POINTS
FOR ORIGINALITY.
NOT THAT I'M COMPETITIVE.
Max sinks baskets while jumping and flipping on the trampoline.
Max says, SO, I'D LOVE
TO CHALLENGE ZOLTA AGAIN,
BUT HE'D PROBABLY FIND A REASON
TO WEASEL OUT OF IT.
BESIDES, RULES ARE RULES.
SO, ROSA, YOU'RE UP NEXT.
BRING YOUR BEST
TO THE SHOWSTOPPER CHALLENGE.
[Beeping]
Nick’s image appears with blue stars connecting it to Axel’s image.
Text above the stars reads “Connecting to.” The stars turn yellow.
[Ringing]
[Dramatic music plays]
Axel says, DUDE,
I'M A LITTLE BUSY.
I KNOW YOU DON'T CARE,
BUT I'VE GOT A SHOWCASE
TO PUT ON.
Nick says, LOOK, I KNOW.
BUT, YOU'VE GOTTA
CANCEL IT.
Axel asks, ARE YOU JOKING ME?
Nick says, LOOK, SOME SERIOUS STUFF
IS GOING ON,
AND ELLA AND I NEED
EVERYONE'S HELP.
Axel says, SO, FIRST YOU BAIL ON ME,
AND NOW, MOMENTS BEFORE
WE'RE ABOUT TO GO ON,
YOU WANT ME
TO JUST PULL THE PLUG?
Nick says, TRUST ME, THIS IS
THE LAST THING I WANT.
OKAY, BUT REMEMBER WHEN I FOUND
THAT SECRET ROOM?
WELL, THEN A VOICE STARTED
TALKING TO ME AND ELLA
AND SENT US EIGHT SCARVES.
Axel says, SCARVES? TELL ME MORE!
Axel shakes his head and says, ACTUALLY, DON'T.
Nick says, WAIT, WAIT, WAIT.
LOOK, I THINK THE SCARVES
ARE SOME KIND OF PUZZLE,
AND I THINK ONE OF THEM
BELONGS TO EACH OF US.
Axel asks, BELONGS?
Nick says, WELL, TWO OF THEM
ALREADY CHANGED COLOUR.
ONE WHEN I GOT IT AND ONE
WHEN I PASSED IT TO ELLA.
Axel asks, ARE WE TALKING
WINTER SCARVES,
OR FLOATY SCARVES?
Nick says, REAL FLOATY.
Nick throws blue scarves in the air.
[Sad music plays]
He says, LOOK, SOMEHOW WE HAVE TO
GET A SCARF TO EVERYONE.
THERE'S ALMOST NO TIME
AND IF WE DON'T SOLVE THIS,
WE'VE BEEN TOLD
THERE'LL BE CONSEQUENCES.
SO, AGAIN,
I REALLY DON'T WANNA
MESS UP YOUR SHOW,
BUT WE CAN'T DO THE PERFORMANCE
AND SOLVE THE PUZZLE.
Axel says, UNLESS WE FOLLOW
CIRCUS RULE NUMBER ONE-
THE SHOW MUST GO ON.
The words “Big Top Bulletin” appear under a circus big top. Purple script appears below it reading “A word from the editor. An image of Axel in a black suit and tie, and a white shirt, slowly moves up beside the words.
[Crank]
A red curtain opens. Axel walks in front of a blue mat.
[Tense music plays]
Axel says, AND NOW
FOR THE GRAND FINALE.
I HAD BIG PLANS
FOR THIS ONE.
IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE
THE FIRST TIME
ALL OF US WOULD BE PERFORMING
TOGETHER IN A LONG TIME.
EVEN THOUGH WE'RE APART,
I STILL WANNA PUT ON
A CLASSIC BTA SHOWCASE,
AND FOR A WHILE THERE,
IT REALLY FELT LIKE WE WERE
FARTHER APART THAN EVER.
[Exciting music plays]
Axel continues, UNTIL WE FOUND A WAY, TOGETHER,TO CONNECT US.
SO, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
BOYS AND GIRLS,
STEP RIGHT UP
AND ENJOY THE SHOW!
TAKE IT AWAY, NICK!
Text reads “Showcase” as rainbow colours swirl together.
[Circus music plays]
Nick juggles scarves and spins.
[Swish]
[Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh]
Nick holds the scarves as he dances.
He throws the scarves.
April sits on a hoop. She catches the scarves and twirls them.
[Exciting music plays]
Axel climbs a bar. He slides down and catches the scarves. He jumps up and down as he throws the scarves in the air. He bunches the scarves in a ball and throws them.
Rosa spider walks down a staircase. She catches the scarves and juggles them. Rosa flips and throws the scarves.
Max plays a violin.
[Violin music plays]
He puts the violin down and catches the scarves.
[Exciting music plays]
Max juggles them, then throws the scarves. He picks up his violin.
[Violin music plays]
Celeste flips on grass beside a lake.
[Exciting music plays]
Celeste catches the scarves. She smiles as she twirls them and juggles them. She moves them up and down. Celeste throws the scarf.
[Boing, boing]
Phoenix catches a scarf. She stands on a bench as she moves the scarf from hand to hand.
[Boing, boing]
[Exciting music plays]
Ella hula hoops. She catches a scarf and twirls it above her head and turns.
[Whoosh]
Ella points at the scarf and smiles. She catches it, stops her hoop, and bows.
[Applause, cheers]
Nick, Axel, Rosa, Celeste, April, and Max bow. Phoenix bows.
[Applause, cheers]
Tex reads “Big Top Academy Showcase.”
[Pop, pop, pop]
The teenagers pop up in windows on their screen.
April says, THAT WAS EPIC.
Max says, YEAH.
BUT I STILL HAVE NO IDEA
WHAT JUST HAPPENED.
Celeste says, I CAN'T WAIT TO ANALYZE
THE METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
OF THIS SPECIMEN.
Ms. Martel says, I LOVED IT.
WHAT A FABULOUS EDITION, AXEL.
Axel says, THANKS, MS. MARTEL.
Ms. Martel says, AND A SHOWCASE, SO CREATIVE,
SO ORIGINAL, AND I LOVED
THE USE OF PROPS.
I HAPPEN TO HAVE QUITE A
COLLECTION OF SCARVES MYSELF.
LOOKING FORWARD
TO THE NEXT EDITION!
Ms. Martel waves a red scarf and turns off her screen.
[Tense music plays]
April says, OKAY, SO NOW WE HAVE
FASHIONABLE NEW ACCESSORIES,
BUT WHAT NOW?
Ella says, FIND A SOLUTION,
OR HELLO CONSEQUENCES.
TICK TOCK.
Rosa asks, ARE THESE PART OF A PUZZLE?
Celeste asks, OR A MATHEMATICAL FUNCTION?
Nick says, WELL, LET'S SEE
WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE.
HOLD 'EM UP.
IT'S A MAP.
[Buzzing]
Phoenix says, BUT TO WHAT?
Ellas says, X MARKS THE SPOT.
Phoenix says, RIGHT.
BUT TO WHAT?
[Exciting music plays]
End credits for Big Top Academy play.
The animated sun shines.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kristy stands beside a large sheet of paper. The word “Respect” has a puffy line around it. Below, text reads “What are some ways we can show respect at school? At home? What are some other ways people can show respect?”
Text reads “Primary one to three. Teacher Kristy.”
Kristy says, I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THAT EPISODE
OF BIG TOP ACADEMY.
IT HAD SOME GREAT EXAMPLES
OF HOW DIFFERENT PEOPLE
SHOWED RESPECT FOR ONE ANOTHER
A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS.
HOW WE TREAT EACH OTHER IS
A REALLY GOOD SIGN OF RESPECT
AND HOW WE CAN TREAT
OTHER PEOPLE WELL.
TODAY WE'RE GOING TO USE
OUR FINAL STRATEGY,
WHICH IS GOING TO BE
MAKING A MIND MAP
ALL ABOUT RESPECT.
I HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS
HERE TO HELP ME KEEP ON TRACK
AND ALSO TO GIVE ME
A PLACE TO START.
SOMETIMES IF I JUST HAVE A WORD
LIKE "RESPECT"
THERE'S SO MANY IDEAS IT'S HARD
TO DECIDE WHAT TO WRITE DOWN.
BUT SOME OF OUR
GUIDING QUESTIONS HERE
WILL HELP US BE FOCUSED
WHEN WE GET GOING.
SO OUR QUESTIONS
WE HAVE HERE ARE--
SO, I THINK
I'M GOING TO START WITH
"WHAT ARE SOME WAYS WE CAN
SHOW RESPECT AT SCHOOL?"
SO, I'VE GOT
MY RESPECT BUBBLE HERE
AND I'M GOING TO START MAKING
SOME LITTLE LINES OFF OF IT
WITH MY IDEAS.
SO, UM, I THINK SHOWING RESPECT
AT SCHOOL, WELL--
IF YOU'RE A STUDENT...
WELL, LISTENING
TO THE TEACHER IS IMPORTANT,
BUT YOU KNOW WHAT?
I'M A TEACHER
AND LISTENING TO MY STUDENTS
IS A WAY I CAN SHOW RESPECT.
SO, I'M GOING TO SAY
"LISTENING TO...
"..EACH OTHER."
AND THEN MAYBE IN BRACKETS
I'LL WRITE "STUDENTS"...
AND THEN I'LL PUT A COMMA
AND I'LL WRITE "TEACHERS".
BECAUSE JUST BECAUSE
I'M A TEACHER
DOESN'T MEAN I DON'T NEED
TO SHOW RESPECT TO PEOPLE.
SO, THERE'S MY FIRST IDEA,
AND THAT RELATES TO RESPECT.
OTHER WAYS I CAN SHOW RESPECT
AT SCHOOL.
WELL, ONE OF MY
FAVOURITE THINGS
IS THE IDEA THAT
WE WANT TO TREAT...
..OTHER PEOPLE THE WAY
WE WANT TO BE TREATED.
"..WAY WE WANT...
"..TO BE TREATED."
I WANT PEOPLE TO TREAT ME
WITH KINDNESS AND RESPECT,
SO I'M GOING TO DO THINGS
TO OTHER PEOPLE
THAT I'D BE OKAY
IF THEY DID.
IF I DON'T WANT PEOPLE
TO SAY RUDE THINGS TO ME,
I'M NOT GOING TO SAY
RUDE THINGS TO THEM,
AND I DON'T THINK THAT'S
ANYTHING ANY OF US LIKE.
SO, "TREAT OTHER PEOPLE
THE WAY YOU WANNA BE TREATED"
IS ANOTHER IDEA ABOUT
HOW WE CAN SHOW RESPECT.
SOME WAYS WE CAN
SHOW RESPECT AT SCHOOL.
WELL, ANOTHER THING WE CAN DO
IS WE CAN DO OUR...WORK.
IT'S NOT SUPER RESPECTFUL
FOR STUDENTS
TO NOT BE DOING
WHAT THEIR TEACHERS
OR THE ADULTS IN THE SCHOOL
HAVE ASKED THEM TO,
AND EVEN FOR ME
AS A TEACHER,
I HAVE A JOB TO DO
AT SCHOOL.
I WOULDN'T BE SHOWING RESPECT
TO MY PRINCIPAL
IF I WASN'T DOING MY JOB.
I WOULDN'T BE SHOWING RESPECT
TO MY STUDENTS EITHER.
LET'S THINK ABOUT--
WE'VE GOT THREE GOOD IDEAS
ABOUT HOW WE CAN
SHOW RESPECT AT SCHOOL.
NOW LET'S START TO THINK ABOUT
HOW CAN WE SHOW RESPECT AT HOME?
WELL, YOU KNOW WHAT?
THIS LISTENING ONE--
I'M GONNA ADD THIS
FOR AT HOME TOO.
"LISTEN...
"..TO OUR PARENTS."
OH, YOU KNOW WHAT?
I HAVE AN IDEA
FOR EVERYWHERE.
YOU KNOW WHAT?
"USE MY MANNERS".
THAT'S ANOTHER NICE WAY
I CAN SHOW RESPECT.
AND MAYBE INCREDIBLE AN START
WHEN I DO A THOUGHT BUBBLE,
ALL MY IDEAS DON'T HAVE TO COME
FROM THE MIDDLE.
SOMETIMES MY SECOND BUBBLES WILL
MAKE ME THINK OF OTHER THINGS.
SO, THIS MADE ME THINK
OF SAYING
"PLEASE AND...
"..THANK YOU."
PUT THAT IN ITS OWN BUBBLE.
AND USING MY MANNERS MIGHT MEAN
HOLDING A DOOR FOR SOMEONE.
"HOLDING...THE DOOR."
SO, THOSE ARE BOTH WAYS
I CAN SHOW RESPECT
THAT HAVE TO DO
WITH USING MY MANNERS.
LET'S SEE.
SO, I THOUGHT OF
A FEW WAYS AT HOME.
HMM. YOU KNOW WHAT?
AT HOME,
I CAN ALSO DO MY CHORES.
SO, DO ANYTHING
THAT I'M EXPECTED TO DO
AND HELP CLEAN UP
AND HELP AROUND THE HOUSE
TO TAKE CARE OF MY HOME
AND MY FAMILY.
THAT'S A REALLY IMPORTANT WAY
TO SHOW RESPECT
TO MY FAMILY
AND TO MY HOUSE.
SOME WAYS OTHER PEOPLE
CAN SHOW RESPECT.
SO, I'VE GOT "USING MANNERS".
I'VE GOT-- LET'S SEE.
YOU KNOW, SOMETHING
I DON'T HAVE DOWN THERE
THAT'S A REALLY IMPORTANT PART
OF USING RESPECT--
AND IT RELATES TO SOME
OF THE OTHER THINGS--
BUT I'M GONNA SAY,
"KIND...WORDS"
JUST WHOEVER
YOU'RE TALKING TO.
USING KIND WORDS.
AND MAYBE I'LL ADD TO THAT,
"TONE OF...VOICE."
'CAUSE SOMETHING
I CAN SAY SOMETHING,
BUT IF I SAY THANK YOU
AND I SAY IT LIKE THIS--
Kristy gruffly says,
THANK YOU!
She continues, IT'S NOT VERY RESPECTFUL
AND IT'S NOT VERY POLITE,
EVEN THOUGH THE WORDS
ARE KIND OF POLITE WORDS.
SO, THIS IS HOW I COMPLETE
A MIND MAP.
I'M GOING TO CHALLENGE YOU
TO TAKE THIS IDEA OF RESPECT
AND I WANT YOU TO SEE
IF YOU CAN CREATE A MIND MAP.
MAYBE YOU CAN
CREATE A LIST.
MAYBE YOU CAN USE
TEXT-TO-SPEECH.
FIND YOUR OWN WAY
TO BRAINSTORM IDEAS
ABOUT HOW YOU CAN SHOW RESPECT
FOR THE PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE.
AT SCHOOL, AT HOME,
AND OTHER PEOPLE
OUT IN THE COMMUNITY.
SO, HOW CAN YOU BE RESPECTFUL?
THIS IS OUR BRAINSTORM CHALLENGE
FOR TODAY.
SO, GET YOUR PAPER,
GET YOUR PENCIL,
AND GET STARTED ON IDEAS
ABOUT HOW YOU CAN BE RESPECTFUL.
The animated sun shines.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kristy sits by her round table.
Text beneath her reads “Primary one to three. Teacher Kristy.”
Kristy says, THANK YOU SO MUCH
FOR JOINING US TODAY
ON TVOKIDS POWER HOUR
OF LEARNING
TO LEARN ALL ABOUT
BRAINSTORMING.
I HOPE YOU HAVE LOTS OF IDEAS
IN YOUR NOTEBOOK
AND YOU HAVE SOME THOUGHTS
ABOUT HOW YOU COULD BRAINSTORM
ABOUT RESPECT,
LIKE WE JUST DID,
OR MAYBE YOU HAVE
A HEART MAP STARTED
SO THAT YOU CAN HAVE
ALL KINDS OF IDEAS
FOR WHEN YOU NEED
TO WRITE AT SCHOOL.
WHATEVER BRAINSTORMING TOOL
YOU USE,
REMEMBER, BRAINSTORMING
IS A REALLY IMPORTANT PART
OF THE WRITING PROCESS,
AND YOU CAN'T GET STARTED
WITHOUT THOSE IDEAS.
SO, TRY LOTS OF DIFFERENT WAYS
TO BRAINSTORM.
I HOPE YOU HAD FUN TODAY,
AND WE LOOK FORWARD
TO SEEING YOU AGAIN
ON TVO KIDS POWER HOUR
OF LEARNING.
Kristy smiles.
The animated sun shines.
Text reads “TVO Kids would like to thank all the teachers involved in the Power Hour of Learning as they continue to teach the children of Ontario from their homes.”
“TVO Power Hour of Learning.”
