Transcript: Graphic Texts | Junior Lesson | TVOkids
A female narrator says, “WELCOME TO
TVOKIDS POWER HOUR OF LEARNING.”
Text reads, “Today’s junior lesson, Graphic Texts”
Arianna says, “HI, EVERYONE. I'M ARIANNA.
THANK YOU FOR JOINING ME FOR
TODAY'S POWER HOUR OF LEARNING.
TODAY WE'RE GOING TO BE LEARNING
ABOUT GRAPHIC TEXTS.
FOR THIS LESSON, YOU'RE GONNA
NEED TWO SHEETS OF PAPER
AND SOMETHING TO WRITE WITH.
IT CAN BE ANYTHING.
TODAY WE'RE GONNA SEE IF WE CAN
CREATE OUR OWN GRAPHIC TEXTS.
DON'T HAVE YOUR SHEET OF PAPER
OR A WRITING TOOL HANDY?
NO WORRIES.
FEEL FREE TO GRAB THEM
BECAUSE WE'RE GONNA GET STARTED
IN JUST ABOUT A MINUTE OR SO.
AS I MENTIONED BEFORE,
TODAY WE'RE GONNA
BE EXPLORING
THE WONDERFUL WORLD
OF GRAPHIC TEXTS.
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD
OF THE SAYING,
"A PICTURE IS WORTH
A THOUSAND WORDS"?
WHAT THAT MEANS IS THAT
SOMETIMES GRAPHICS OR PICTURES
CAN CONVEY A MESSAGE
MORE EFFECTIVELY THAN WORDS,
OR CAN BE USED
ALONGSIDE WORDS
TO MAKE THE MESSAGE
BETTER UNDERSTOOD BY THE READER.”
Arianna continues, “A GRAPHIC TEXT IS A PICTURE
WITH OR WITHOUT
SENTENCES OR PHRASES
THAT HELP THE WRITER
EXPRESS THE IDEAS
THAT THEY WANT THE READER
TO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND.
SOMETIMES GRAPHICS
CAN CONVEY THE MESSAGE
MORE EFFECTIVELY
THAN WORDS,
OR CAN BE USED
ALONGSIDE THOSE WORDS.
SYMBOLS AND PICTURES ARE
POWERFUL WAYS TO COMMUNICATE.
THROUGHOUT THE WORLD
AND THROUGH TIME,
DIFFERENT CULTURES HAVE
USED SYMBOLS AND PICTURES
TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES.
IN THIS EPISODE
OF THE WACKY WORD SHOW,
ZOEY AND LUKAS
EXPLORE THE MANY WAYS
THAT WE CAN COMMUNICATE
WITH PICTURES, SYMBOLS,
AND PICTOGRAMS,
JUST LIKE THE ANCIENT EGYPTIANS.
A GRAPHIC DESIGNER
ALSO DROPS BY
TO SHOW HOW A SIMPLE IMAGE CAN
CONVEY A MESSAGE OR IDEA.”
Female singers sing, “IT'S THE WACKY
WACKY WORD SHOW
THE WACKY
WACKY WORD SHOW
THE WACKY WORD SHOW
SO WACKY!”
Zoey says, “IT'S ME, ZOEY.”
Lukas adds, “I'M LUKAS!
WE PLAY WITH WORDS.”
Zoey and Lukas sing,
”HAVE LOTS OF FUN!
ON THE
WACKY WORD SHOW,
FUN IS NUMBER ONE!”
Zoey sings,
“NOW WE LOVE
BOOKS AND STORIES.”
Lukas sings,
“MAKE STUFF UP,
THAT'S WHAT WE DO!”
Zoey sings,
“DID WE MENTION
ACTING WACKY?”
Zoey and Lukas sing,
“YEAH, WE DO THAT TOO!
WE'VE GOT TONS OF GUESTS
AND BOOBOO BOT--
GAMES AND JOKES WITH YOU!
IT'S THE WACKY
WACKY WORD SHOW
THE WACKY
WACKY WORD SHOW
THE WACKY WORD SHOW
HERE WE GO!
THE WACKY WORD SHOW
SO WACKY!”
Sunshine lights up a bedroom.
Zoey wears an Egyptian headdress
As she types on a laptop.
Text on her phone screen reads,
“Lukas, no new messages”
Zoey shrugs. She puts down her phone
And walks away from the laptop.
Zoey says, “HEY GUYS!
AND WELCOME TO OUR--
I MEAN, MY--
LUKAS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE HERE
FOR OUR SHOW INTRO,
BUT I GUESS HE WAS JUST…”
A rolled-up piece of paper lays on a desk.
Zoey asks, “WHAT'S THIS?
Zoey unrolls the paper.
She says, “HMM, IS THIS SUPPOSED
TO TELL ME WHERE HE IS?
NEVER A DULL MOMENT WITH LUKAS,
I'M AFRAID--”
[[Shouting]
Zoey exclaims, “WHOA!”
Zoey screams
Lukas is dressed as a mummy
[Shrieking]
Lukas waves his arms as he approaches
Zoey.
[Laughing]
The Egyptian pyramids are pictured.
Zoey says,
“WELCOME TO OUR SHOW,
COMING TO YOU STRAIGHT FROM
ANCIENT EGYPT.”
Lukas adds, “THAT'S RIGHT.
I READ A BOOK ABOUT
HIEROGLYPHICS IN SCHOOL.
IT'S A KIND OF WRITING FROM
ANCIENT EGYPT
THAT USES PICTURES AND SYMBOLS.
SO I THOUGHT I'D TRY
WRITING MY OWN.”
Zoey asks, “THAT'S WHAT THIS IS?”
Lukas replies, “HUH, LET ME SEE
IF I CAN FIGURE THIS OUT.”
THAT'S A MOM…”
Zoey adds, “BUT THERE'S TWO OF THEM, SO...
MOMMIES?”
Lukas says, “MUMMIES, LIKE ME.”
Zoey responds, “OKAY. AND THEN THAT'S
A LITTLE R,
SO "MUMMIES ARE?”
Lukas agrees, “YEP.”
Zoey goes on, “MUMMIES ARE... EMOJI WITH AN S
AND A CAPE?”
[Gasping]
Zoey exclaims, “SUPER!
"MUMMIES ARE SUPER!"
Lukas agrees, “UH-HUH.”
An ice cube picture appears.
Zoey guesses,
“MUMMIES ARE SUPER COLD?”
Lukas says, “ALMOST.”
Zoey continues, “SUPER…”
[Gasping]
Zoey says, “MUMMIES ARE
SUPER COOL!”
Zoey and Lukas high five.
Zoey says, “WE HAVE THE BEST SHOW TODAY.
IT'S ALL ABOUT HOW WE SAY THINGS
WITH PICTURES,
SIGNS, OR SYMBOLS.”
Lukas says, “JUST LIKE THE
ANCIENT EGYPTIANS DID,
LIKE 5,000 YEARS AGO!”
Zoey adds, “YOU KNOW, YOU LOOK JUST LIKE
THIS EMOJI.”
A mummy emoji appears on Zoey’s phone.
[Laughing]
Zoey exclaims, “THIS SHOW IS STUFFED WITH
MORE TREASURES
THAN AN EGYPTIAN TOMB.
LET'S GO!”
Zoey and Lukas leave the bedroom.
They point out their fingers as they swing
their arms up.
A curly-haired girl with red glasses says,
“WHAT'S A MUMMY'S FAVOURITE TYPE
OF MUSIC?
RAP.”
[Laughing]
The curly-haired girl with red glasses
continues, “GET IT? 'CAUSE, LIKE,
MUMMIES ARE WRAPPED IN, LIKE,
TOILET PAPER.”
Multiple mummy emojis appear.
Cartoon versions of Zoey and Lukas appear
on a theatre curtain.
The sun shines brightly on the Sphinx in Egypt.
Zoey is dress like Cleopatra. She brushes
her hair.
Lukas asks, “ARE YOU NEARLY READY?”
Zoey replies, “BE THERE IN A MINUTE.
JUST GOTTA CHECK MY MESSAGES.”
Zoey puts on a gold headband. She smiles.
Hieroglyphs cover a wall.
Zoey says, “SEEN THAT ONE. SEEN THAT ONE.”
[Gasping]
Zoey exclaims, “OOH! WHAT'S THIS?
STOP READING MESSAGES?
WHAT?
SOMETIMES THIS IS THE ONLY WAY
I CAN COMMUNICATE WITH YOU.”
Lukas wears a Roman soldier’s uniform
[Laughing]
Lukas says, “COME ON.”
Zoey asks, “OH! OH! WHAT'S THAT?”
Zoey mouths the words of a message.
Lukas rolls his eyes.
[Laughing]
Lukas says, “I GIVE UP.”
Lukas sits at the laptop in the bedroom.
He says, “I'VE BEEN PROGRAMMING BOOBOO BOT
TO BE A SUPER HIEROGLYPHIC
DECODER.
TAH-DAH!”
BooBoo bot wears the Egyptian headdress.
BooBoo bot says, “BOOBOO BOT READY TO DECODE.”
Lukas says, “CHECK THIS OUT.”
Three images appear on the laptop.
A boy smiling, building blocks, and a pyramid.
BooBoo bot says, “LUKAS PLAYS THE TRIANGLE.”
Lukas replies, “OKAY. JUST A LITTLE GLITCH.
IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE
"LUKAS BUILDS PYRAMIDS."
I'LL JUST FIX THAT AND TRY
ANOTHER.”
An eye, a smile, and a cat appear on the screen.
BooBoo boy speaks, “I EAT CATS.”
Lukas speaks, “NO, BOOBOO BOT! WE LIKE CATS!
THEY'RE FRIENDS, NOT FOOD.”
Scared eyes and a mummy appear on the screen.
Lukas claims, “THERE'S NO WAY YOU CAN
MESS THIS UP.
IT'S "LOOK OUT FOR THE MUMMY."
BooBoo bot replies, “I WANT MY MOMMY”.
[Laughing]
Zoey says, “I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE APART
FROM ANCIENT EGYPTIANS
USED SYMBOLS IN THEIR LANGUAGE,
AND IT TURNS OUT LOTS DO.”
Zoey looks at the laptop.
She says,
“LIKE THE CHINESE AND JAPANESE.
DID YOU KNOW THE CHINESE
LANGUAGE
HAS OVER 50,000 CHARACTERS?
UNLIKE HIEROGLYPHS,
THESE LANGUAGES DON'T USE
DRAWINGS OF PEOPLE, ANIMALS,
OR OBJECTS,
BUT SYMBOLS INSTEAD.
SO TO THE CHINESE,
THIS MEANS FLOWER,
AND THIS MEANS DRAGON.”
Zoey paints Chinese symbols on a page
in a notepad.
Zoey continues, “I'VE BEEN TRYING
TO DRAW SOME MYSELF.
IT'S NOT THAT EASY.
OOH.”
Zoey draws a straight line.
Zoey says, “PERFECT! THAT ONE MEANS "ONE."
WELL, NOW THAT I'VE DONE THREE,
I JUST HAVE A COUPLE MORE
THOUSAND TO GO.
NO BIGGIE.”
Hundreds of Chinese symbols appear.
Lukas says, “WANT TO MEET SOMEONE WHO
KNOWS ALL ABOUT
HOW TO SAY THINGS WITH PICTURES?”
Zoey and Lukas sing,
“HE COMMUNICATES LIKE
AN ANCIENT EGYPTIAN
WITH LOGOS, SIGNS,
AND SYMBOLS OF ALL DESCRIPTION
WELCOME, CHRIS SWEET
INTO TO OUR MUMMY
CRYPT--SHUN”
A small dog leads Chris into the bedroom.
Lukas says, “AWW, NICE DOG!”
Zoey adds, “HE'S SO CUTE.”
Chris says, “HEY, GUYS! HOW YOU DOING?”
Zoey and Lukas say together, “HI, CHRIS!”
Chris says, “I SEE YOU'VE GOT SOME
HIEROGLYPHIC THING
GOING ON HERE.”
Zoey replies, “YEAH! DO YOU LIKE IT?”
Chris answers, “I LOVE IT, I THINK IT'S REALLY
COOL, ACTUALLY.
DO YOU GUYS WANT TO SEE
WHAT I BROUGHT TODAY?”
Lukas and Zoey say, “YEAH”
Chris responds, “CHECK THIS OUT”
Chris holds a graphic of a chef.
Lukas exclaims, “WHOA!”
Zoey asks, “WHAT IS IT?”
Chris answers, “THAT'S BURGER MAN,
HIEROGLYPHIC-STYLE.”
[Kids giggling]
Lukas says, “OH, AND THAT'S YOU!
AND YOUR DOG, BOWSER!
YOU DRAW REALLY WELL.”
Chris sits with Zoey and Lukas at the desk.
Zoey asks, “SO WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR JOB
AS A DESIGNER?
Chris replies, “WELL, MY JOB AS A DESIGNER
IS TO SAY THINGS
WITHOUT, WELL, SAYING THEM.
LET ME EXPLAIN.
DRAWING IS MORE LIKE SAYING
THINGS WITH PICTURES.
CHECK THIS ONE OUT.”
Zoey says, “TWO PEOPLE. TWO PEOPLE
AND A HEART.”
Chris asks, “SO WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE WHEN
YOU SEE THIS LOGO?”
Zoey responds, “SWEET, KIND OF.”
Lukas adds, “HAPPY?”
Chris explains, “HAPPY, LOVING, AND HELPFUL.”
Zoey asks, “WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
A LOGO AND OTHER SIGNS?”
Chris answers, “A LOGO IS A KIND OF SYMBOL
THAT COMPANIES USE
TO REPRESENT THEMSELVES.
AND PICTOGRAMS CAN BE FOR
ANYTHING OUT THERE.
IF WE TAKE A LOOK AT
THIS DESIGN HERE,
YOU CAN SEE THAT THERE'S
A LOT OF PICTOGRAMS.
IT'S LIKE A SIMPLE DRAWING OF
SOMETHING THAT EXISTS
IN REAL LIFE, LIKE AN OBJECT.
HERE IS THE CN TOWER IN TORONTO.
AND YOU HAVE AN RCMP POLICE
OFFICER RIGHT THERE.
A LOBSTER FOR THE EAST COAST
OF CANADA.
AND YOU EVEN HAVE
PARLIAMENT HILL.”
Zoey says, “WOW, THAT'S COOL.”
Chris adds, “NOW IT'S YOUR TURN TO DRAW
ANCIENT EGYPT
USING ONLY THREE OR FOUR
PICTOGRAMS.
AND YOU SHOULD HAVE ENOUGH
INSPIRATION
WITH ALL THE THINGS HERE.”
Lukas says, “YEAH”
Lukas and Zoey begin to design pictograms
On a yellow notepad. Zoey looks deep in thought.
Chris says, “REMEMBER, KEEP IT VERY SIMPLE.
THAT'S WHAT A PICTOGRAM
IS ALL ABOUT.
LOOKS LIKE A REAL HIEROGLYPHIC
THERE, LUKAS.”
Lukas replies, “THANKS.”
Chris counts down, “FIVE, FOUR, THREE, TWO…”
[Imitating Buzzer noise]
Chis says, “SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT.
WOW!
I SEE HERE YOU HAVE A LOT
OF BRICKS JUST LIKE A PYRAMID.
YOU GOT THE BRICKS,
YOU GOT THE SIMPLE SHAPE,
AND THAT'S WHAT A PICTOGRAM
IS ALL ABOUT.
SIMPLICITY.
THAT GUY IS JAMMING.
SUPER COOL!”
Zoey and Lukas dance.
Chris adds, “YOU GUYS GOT DANCE MOVES TOO!”
Lukas says, “OH YEAH.”
Chris continues, “AND THE LAST ONE HERE
IS A SARCOPHAGUS.”
Zoey replies, “YEP”
Chris says, “WOW”
Zoey asks, “YOU KNOW WHO IS IN THERE?
Chris says, “NO.”
Zoey replies, “LUKAS, THAT'S WHY HE'S SO HAPPY.”
Chris exclaims, “I KNEW IT!”
Lukas says, “MINDS BLOWN!”
Chris continues, “CHECK OUT THESE PICTOGRAMS.
MOST COUNTRIES USE PICTURE-BASED
SIGNS FOR IMPORTANT THINGS.
SO IF YOU HAVE TO GO TO THE
BATHROOM,
YOU'RE JUST GONNA LOOK FOR THE
BATHROOM SIGN.
IF YOU NEED WI-FI TO CONNECT TO
THE INTERNET,
YOU'RE GONNA FIND THE WI-FI
SIGN.”
Lukas asks, “SO PICTOGRAMS ARE PICTURES
THAT STAND IN FOR WORDS,
KIND OF LIKE A UNIVERSAL
LANGUAGE.”
Chris answers, “THAT'S RIGHT, LUKAS.
COULDN'T HAVE SAID IT BETTER
MYSELF.”
Zoey says, “WELL, THANKS FOR COMING OVER,
CHRIS.
IT WAS REALLY FUN.”
Chris responds, “YOU'RE WELCOME.
IT WAS MY PLEASURE.”
A dark-haired girl in a gray t-shirt asks,
“WHAT DO YOU CALL THREE KITTENS
STACKED ON TOP OF EACH OTHER?”
A girl with dark blonde hair replies,
“A TRIO OF KITTENS?”
The dark-haired girl in the gray t-shirt says,
“A PURR-AMID.”
[Laughing]
A girl with dark blonde hair repeats, “
A "PURR-AMID?"
[Imitating purring]
A graphic with Zoey and Lukas reads, "Game Show”
A theme song pays, “GAME SHOW! GAME SHOW!
GAME SHOW! GAME SHOW!”
Lukas exclaims, “HELLO, AND WELCOME TO
PICK YOUR GRAM!
THE GAME SHOW
WHERE WE HUNT DOWN TREASURES
AS VALUABLE AS A PHARAOH'S
RICHES.
PICTOGRAMS!
ON THE HUNT TODAY ARE CATHY
AND CHARLOTTE
ON TEAM TOMB RAIDER!”
Cathy and Charlotte sing, “C'EST LA BANANA,
C'EST LA BANANA”
Lukas continues, “AND WE HAVE KIARA AND MIA
ON TEAM GOLD GRABBERS!”
[Beat boxing]
Lukas says, “YOU'LL BOTH GET A BIG CARD WITH
SOME PICTOGRAMS ON IT.
I'LL GIVE YOU A CATEGORY,
AND 30 SECONDS TO CIRCLE
ALL THE PICTOGRAMS
THAT FIT THAT CATEGORY.
THE MORE YOU FIND,
THE MORE POINTS YOU SCORE.
BUT CHOOSE CAREFULLY,
BECAUSE FOR EVERY PICTOGRAM
YOU CIRCLE
THAT DOES NOT FIT THE CATEGORY,
YOU LOSE A POINT!”
Kiara and Mia say, “OH NO!”
Lukas goes on, “THE FIRST CATEGORY IS...
PICTOGRAMS YOU MIGHT FIND
IN A PUBLIC SPACE
LIKE A MALL OR AN AIRPORT.
THREE, TWO, ONE. GO!”
Team tomb raider discusses the pictograms.
Charlotte says, “THIS ONE.
YEAH.”
A bathroom symbol is circled.
Charlotte says, “THESE TWO.
UM, PARKING.”
Cathy agrees, “YEAH, PARKING.”
Charlotte adds, “NO DOGS.”
Cathy responds, “NO DOGS,
THAT'S A GOOD ONE.”
Lukas exclaims,
“WOW, THERE'S SOME SERIOUS
CIRCLING GOING ON OVER HERE.
NOT SO MUCH OVER THERE THOUGH.”
Mia says,
“YEAH, THE BATHROOM SIGN.
OH, HERE.”
Lukas says, “KEEP GOING, GUYS!
TIME IS RUNNING OUT.”
[Groaning]
Cathy says, “I'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE.”
Charlotte replies, “NO, NOT IN A PUBLIC SPACE.”
Kiara exclaims, “OH, HERE!”
Mia adds, “HERE.”
Lukas says, “10 SECONDS LEFT, GUYS!”
Mia says, “OKAY.”
Kiara asks, “WHAT IS THIS?”
Mia responds, “YOU ALSO FIND THIS.”
Kiara agrees, “OH, YEAH.”
Lucas says, “TIME'S UP, GUYS.
MARKERS DOWN.
LET'S SEE HOW YOU DID.
HMM, THE WHEELCHAIR PICTOGRAM.
THAT'S ONE POINT.
THE ELEVATOR IS CORRECT.
AND SO IS THE BATHROOM SIGN.
THE TRASH CAN IS ALSO CORRECT.
ALL RIGHT, TEAM TOMB RAIDER,
LET'S SEE HOW YOU DID.
THAT ONE'S CORRECT.
THE RECYCLING PICTOGRAM,
CORRECT!
THERE ARE RECYCLING BINS IN
PUBLIC SPACES.
OOH, THAT ONE'S INCORRECT.
YOU WON'T FIND A SCHOOL CROSSING
SIGN IN A MALL OR AN AIRPORT.
THAT'S RIGHT.
THAT ONE'S CORRECT.
NO DOGS ALLOWED.
TEAM GOLD GRABBERS,
YOU GOT FOUR CORRECT PICTOGRAMS.
TEAM TOMB RAIDER, YOU ALSO GOT
FOUR CORRECT PICTOGRAMS.
BUT ONE WRONG,
SO YOU LOSE A POINT.
THE SCORE IS FOUR TO THREE.”
Lukas continues, “ONTO THE NEXT CATEGORY.
THESE ARE PICTOGRAMS
YOU MIGHT SEE ON THE ROAD.
GO!”
Kiara says, “OKAY, OKAY. SO...
YOU SEE THIS OUTSIDE TOO.”
Mia asks, “REALLY?”
Kiara replies, “LIKE, IN THE GARBAGE AREAS.
WHATEVER.”
Charlotte says, “YEAH, THAT'S ONE.
AND ALSO THIS.”
Charlotte adds, “AND THIS ONE.
AND THIS ONE.”
Lukas checks team Tomb Raiders answers.
[Mumbling]
Cathy says, “THIS. YEAH.”
Kiara says, “YOU SEE THIS OUTSIDE TOO.
LIKE IN THE... HERE.”
Mia asks, “THIS ONE?”
Kiara replies, “YEAH, I SEE THAT.”
Mia says, “UM, HERE.”
Kiara adds, “LOOK, HERE.”
Lukas exclaims, “THREE SECONDS, GUYS!
TIME'S UP. MARKERS DOWN.”
Lukas says, “TEAM TOMB RAIDER,
LET'S SEE WHAT YOU GOT.
FASTEN YOUR SEATBELT. CORRECT.
DO NOT ENTER. THAT'S ALSO RIGHT!
THE STOP HAND SIGN IS CORRECT.
AND SO IS THE ONE WAY
STREET SIGN.
ALL RIGHT.
ONTO TEAM GOLD GRABBERS!
THE TWO WAY STREET SIGN
IS CORRECT.
THIS ONE'S NOT RIGHT, THOUGH.
THE SYMBOL FOR RECYCLING
IS NOT A ROAD SIDE.
THIS ONE'S CORRECT, TOO.
SO IS SCHOOL CROSSING,
STREET CROSSING,
AND DO NOT ENTER.
AND FINALLY, THE ONE WAY STREET
IS CORRECT.
TEAM TOMB RAIDER, ALL FOUR OF
YOUR PICTOGRAM GUESSES
WERE RIGHT THAT ROUND
FOR A TOTAL OF FOUR POINTS.
YOUR GRAND TOTAL IS...
SEVEN POINTS!”
[Applauding]
Cathy and Charlotte sing, “C'EST LA BANANA”
Lukas continues, “AND TEAM GOLD GRABBERS,
YOU GOT SIX PICTOGRAMS RIGHT
THAT ROUND,
BUT ONE WAS WRONG,
SO YOU LOSE A POINT.
THE GRAND TOTAL FOR TEAM GOLD
GRABBERS IS...
NINE POINTS!
YOU ARE THE WINNERS!
THANKS FOR PLAYING
PICK YOUR GRAM!”
[Applauding]
A dark-haired girl in a purple shirt asks,
“WHY DIDN'T THE SKELETON
CROSS THE ROAD
'CAUSE HE DIDN'T HAVE THE GUTS!”
[Groaning]
[Laughter]
A girl in a yellow shirt says,
“WELL, OBVIOUSLY NOT.
HE'S A SKELETON.”
Heavy drum music plays, Zoey stands in
a graffiti-filled alley.
Zoey sings, “EGYPTIANS OF OLD
KNEW WHERE IT WAS AT
TO BEST TELL THE TALE
OF A CAMEL OR A CAT
'CAUSE COMMUNICATION
CAN BE ROUNDABOUT
WE NEED TO STOP RUNNING
AND FIGURE IT OUT
IF WE DON'T WANNA GET STUCK
IN A POOP
OR HAVE OUR MESSAGE
GO ROUND IN A LOOP
SLIDE OUR WORDS
INTO A SINGLE PICTURE
AND OUR STORY MIGHT JUST
GET A LITTLE RICHER
YEAH, OUR STORY MIGHT JUST
GET A LITTLE RICHER
SO IF YOU WANT YOUR MESSAGE
TO BE TOTALLY LIT
YOU'VE GOTTA USE A PICTOGRAM
TO SAY IT
WHY DON'T YOU USE
A PICTOGRAM
TO SAY IT?”
Zoey says, “GIVE IT A TRY.”
A zookeeper says, “COME TO THE PICTOGRAM ZOO,
WHERE THE ANIMALS ARE SO
LIFE-LIKE,
YOU'LL FORGET THEY AREN'T REAL!
WE'VE GOT A CAMEL FROM THE
DESERT IN EGYPT.
A KANGAROO FROM THE HIGHWAYS
OF AUSTRALIA.
A POLAR BEAR FROM WAY UP
IN MANITOBA.
ALLIGATORS FROM THE SWAMPS
OF LOUISIANA.
AND A PENGUIN THAT'S WADDLED ALL
THE WAY HERE FROM ANTARCTICA!
BUT NO VISIT TO THE PICTOGRAM
ZOO IS COMPLETE
WITHOUT A SIGHTING OF...
THE CUTEST LINE OF DUCKLINGS
FOREVER WAITING
TO CROSS THE ROAD.
GET IN REAL CLOSE FOR PHOTOS,
FOLKS!
'CAUSE THESE ANIMALS DON'T BITE.”
The zookeeper whispers, “THAT'S BECAUSE THEY
AREN'T REAL.”
The zookeeper continues, “IT'S FUN FOR THE WHOLE
FAMILY AT THE PICTOGRAM ZOO!
THE CUTEST AND SAFEST
SAFARI AROUND!
UH…”
A black bear turns to the zookeeper.
[Growling]
The zookeeper runs away from the black bear.
[Screaming]
The black bear walks away from the zookeeper.
Zoey sits in front of the laptop.
She says, “I WAS WONDERING IF EMOJIS
ARE PICTOGRAMS,
AND IT TURNS OUT, THEY ARE!
'CAUSE THEY CAN ALSO STAND IN
FOR WORDS.
EMOJIS WERE INVENTED IN JAPAN.
THE COOL THING IS,
THE WORD "EMOJI"
IS A COMBINATION
OF TWO JAPANESE WORDS,
E, WHICH MEANS PICTURE,
AND MOJI, WHICH MEANS CHARACTER.
EMOJI. PICTURE, CHARACTER.
BECAUSE THEY'RE PICTOGRAMS,
I CAN USE THEM INSTEAD OF WORDS.
LIKE IF I WANTED TO SAY
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY,"
OR EVEN SEND SOME LOVE ALL THE
WAY FROM ANCIENT EGYPT.
AS WELL AS REPLACING WORDS,
EMOJIS HELP WITH THEIR MEANING.
SO IF I PUT THIS AT THE END
OF A SENTENCE,
YOU'D KNOW I WAS JOKING. COOL!
WHOOPS, I MEAN--”
Zoey pulls up an emoji with sunglasses.
[Giggling]
Zoey exclaims, “IT'S THE WACKY CHALLENGE!
WITH YOUR HOSTS ZOEY…”
Lukas interrupts, “AND LUKAS!”
Zoey says, “WELCOME TO TODAY'S ANCIENT
EGYPTIAN CHALLENGE!”
Lukas adds, “THANKS, CLEOPATRA
LET'S MEET OUR CHALLENGERS.”
Zoey says, “WE HAVE ADRIANNA AND MILA
ON TEAM MUMMY MAYHEM.”
Adrianna and Mila wear mummy costumes.
Zoey continues, “…AND JONAH AND RAFAEL
ON TEAM TOMB TRAVELLER.”
Jonah and Raphael wear fedoras.
Zoey says, “YOUR MISSION IS TO DIG UP
THE EMOJIS HIDDEN
IN EACH ANCIENT ARTIFACT.
YOU HAVE TO FIGURE OUT
WHAT SENTENCE
THE EMOJIS ARE SAYING.
IF YOU DON'T SOLVE THE CLUES
BEFORE TIME'S UP,
YOU WILL BE ENTOMBED
IN THE PYRAMID FOR ETERNITY!”
[Shrieking]
Mila says, “EH, WHO CARES?”
Lukas says, “JUST JOKING.”
[Laughter]
Zoey continues, “TEAM TOMB
TRAVELLER, EXPLORE!”
Team tomb traveler searches through a
room filled with ancient Egyptian artifacts.
Jonah says, “HMM. OH, THERE'S THE SCROLL.
SNAKE.”
Jonah and Rafael say together,
“SNAKE, PRESENT, FOUR.”
Jonah says, “SO IT MUST BE FOR,
LIKE "F-O-R."
SNAKE PRESENT...
SNAKE GIFT.”
Rafael adds, “OH, FROM PHARAOH.
IN HIS PARTY.”
Jonah asks, “WHAT COULD IT BE?
SERPENT PARTY?
MAYBE WE CAN LOOK AT IT LATER.
LET'S FIND THE OTHER ONES, OKAY?”
Rafael nods.
Lukas exclaims, “OH, TEAM TOMB TRAVELLER
IS DECIDING TO MOVE ON
TO THE NEXT SCROLL!”
Jonah says, “OH, I FOUND ONE.
LOOK AT THAT ONE,
LET'S SEE IF IT'S EASIER.”
Raphael says, “WELL, A BOTTLE.
THAT'S A CAN,
OR BOTTLE.”
Jonah says, “A BOTTLE, MUMMY, TRAIN, CAT,
TWO, MOSQUITO?
TWO BUG.”
Rafael looks unsure.
Jonah continues, “MUMMY TRAIN CAT.
CAN MUMMY TRAIN CAT TO FLY?”
Lukas says, “YES! GREAT SPEED FIGURING OUT
THAT SENTENCE!”
Jonah says, “ALL RIGHT, I WONDER WHERE
THE LAST ONE COULD BE.
MAYBE HERE”
Zoey says, “TEAM TOMB TRAVELLER
MAKING GREAT TIME.”
Jonah says, “OH, IT'S RIGHT THERE!”
Zoey adds, “IF THEY SOLVE THIS LAST ONE
FAST ENOUGH,
THEY'LL HAVE TIME TO GO BACK TO
THE ONE THEY SKIPPED.”
Raphael says, “THAT'S ALIEN, THAT'S A HEART.”
Jonah adds, “THAT'S A PYRAMID, I THINK.
YEAH, THOSE ARE PYRAMIDS.
SO... ALIENS LOVE PYRAMIDS?”
Lukas says, “YES, THAT'S IT!
YOU STILL HAVE
A FEW SECONDS LEFT.”
Jonah says, “LET'S TRY THIS ONE AGAIN.
SO SNAKE, PRESENT.
BRING-- IT'S LIKE,
BRING A PRESENT FOR PHARAOH
AT THE PARTY? LIKE, NO.”
Rafael adds, “OHHH, BRING A SNAKE
TO PHARAOH?”
Jonah continues, “BRING A SNAKE AS A PRESENT
FOR PHARAOH'S BIRTHDAY PARTY.
YEAH.”
Zoey exclaims, “THAT'S IT!
YOU FIGURED IT OUT!”
Raphael and Jonah cheer, “YEAH!”
Lukas says, “NOW ONTO TEAM MUMMY MAYHEM.”
Adrianna and Mila search the room.
Mila says, “HERE.”
Mila finds a scroll.
Arianna replies, “WHOA.
EYE...TALK... I TALK?”
Mila adds, “IT COULD BE BLOW.”
Adrianna continues, “I BLOW TRUMPET
TO TELEPHONE.
SLEEP, MUMMY.”
Mila adds, “MAYBE IT COULD BE
"I BLOW A TRUMPET TO CALL
"A SLEEPING MUMMY?"
Adrianna agrees, “YEAH”.
Zoey exclaims, “EXACTLY!”
Arianna says, “GOOD JOB.”
Zoey adds, “GO AHEAD, GUYS.
YOUR NEXT MESSAGE AWAITS.”
Adrianna says, “OH, THERE.
OH, FOUND IT”
Mila says, “OKAY.”
Adrianna says, “EGYPTIANS DANCE TO MUSIC
AT NIGHT?”
Zoey exclaims, “GREAT JOB! INCREDIBLE SPEED
ON THAT ONE.”
Lukas adds, “TEAM MUMMY MAYHEM
NOW GOING FOR THE LAST CLUE.
WHOA, LOOKS LIKE THEY FOUND IT!”
Zoey responds, “IF THEY SOLVE THIS CLUE
IN LESS THAN 30 SECONDS,
THEY'LL WIN!”
Adrianna says, “SO THAT'S A CAMEL.
OR A LLAMA.”
Mila agrees, “YEAH.”
Adrianna guesses, “SO CAMELS, GOOD,
PALM TREE?”
Zoey says, “CLOSE!
BUT THAT'S NOT IT.
KEEP TRYING.”
Lukas says, “YOU'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME!”
Adrianna says, “MAYBE IT HAS TO DO WITH
THE TWO BUMPS.”
Mila responds, “OH YEAH.”
Lukas says, “THIS ONE'S TOUGH.
THEY'RE STUCK!”
Adrianna guesses, “CAMEL, GOOD, PALM TREE.”
Zoey says, “TIME'S UP!
THOSE EMOJIS MEAN
"CAMELS LIKE PALM TREES."
THUMBS UP IS A LIKE.
BEFORE WE GET TO THE RESULTS,
LET'S TRY SOMETHING.
EXPLORERS AND MUMMIES, UNITE!
WRITE A SENTENCE TOGETHER
USING EMOJIS!”
Lukas says, “STRANGE IDEA, ZOEY.
MUMMIES AND EXPLORERS
WORKING TOGETHER?
BUT I LIKE IT.”
Zoey continues, “HERE IS THE SENTENCE.
"CLEOPATRA LIKES
STRAWBERRY MILKSHAKES."
Raphael states, “ALL RIGHT, WE NEED CLEOPATRA.
YEAH, THAT LOOKS LIKE HER.”
Jonah adds, “LIKES, MAYBE WE'LL TRY
THE THUMBS UP.
IS THERE A STRAWBERRY?
THAT'S A GLASS OF MILK,
THAT'S FOR SURE.”
Mila responds, “MILK, YEAH.
AND SHAKES…”
The Mummies and Explores say together,
“CLEOPATRA LIKES
STRAWBERRY MILKSHAKES.”
The Mummies and Explores high five.
Zoey says, “YES, I DO LIKE STRAWBERRY
MILKSHAKES.”
[Laughing]
Lukas exclaims, “AND NOW FOR THE RESULTS!
TEAM MUMMY MAYHEM,
YOU GOT TWO POINTS!”
Zoey adds, “AND TEAM TOMB TRAVELLER,
YOU GOT...
THREE POINTS!
YOU WIN!”
[Cheering]
[Growling]
The tomb Travelers run away
from team Mummy Mayhem. Team
Mummy Mayhem chase them.
Lukas says, “UH-OH, I HAD A FEELING
MUMMIES AND EXPLORERS
COULDN'T WORK TOGETHER.”
[Laughing]
Lukas and Zoey’s cartoon faces
cover a theatre curtain.
Zoey wears the Cleopatra costume.
Cleopatra says, “JUST OFF TO THE STORE.
BE BACK SOON!
HMM, WHAT'S THIS?
"DON'T FORGET SNAKE."
SNAKE?
HMM. I WONDER WHAT MARK ANTONY
NEEDS A SNAKE FOR.”
Mark Antony says,
“I SHOULD REALLY FINISH WRITING
THAT MESSAGE TO CLEOPATRA.
[Chisel clanking]
Mark Antony says, “THAT'S BETTER.
NOW SHE WON'T FORGET
MY NECKLACE.”
Text reads, “Four hours later”
Cleopatra says, “HELLO, I'M HOME!
AND I DIDN'T FORGET WHAT YOU
ASKED ME TO PICK UP.”
Mark Antony replies,
“OH GOODY! I CAN'T WAIT TO--”
[Hissing and screaming]
Mark Antony falls to the floor.
He lies unconscious.
[Sighing]
Cleopatra says,
“THAT'S THE LAST TIME
I RUN ERRANDS FOR YOU.
AM I RIGHT?”
Lukas jokes, “DID YOU HEAR ABOUT
THE ANGRY MUMMY?
HE FLIPPED HIS LID.”
Lukas looks confused.
He says, “WEIRD, IT'S TIME
FOR OUR CLOSING SONG
AND I DON'T SEE ZOEY.
BETTER START WITHOUT HER.”
Lukas picks up a ukulele.
Lukas sings, “SO THAT'S OUR SHOW
IT'S TIME TO-- “
Zoey bursts out of a sarcophagus wearing
A mummy costume.
[Shouting and screaming]
Zoey says, “GOT YA!”
She adds, “MAY I?”
Lukas gives Zoey the ukulele.
Lukas and Zoey sing, “WITH SIGNS AND SYMBOLS
THAT TELL US A LOT
AND ARE UNDERSTOOD BETTER
THAN BOOBOO BOT”
[Beeping]
Zoey says, “ONLY JOKING!”
Lukas and Zoey sing,
“AND NOW OUR SHOW IS DONE”
Lukas and Zoey take a bow.
BooBoo bot says, “BOOBOO BOT LOVES MUMMY”
[Laughing]
Zoey sings, “IF WE DON'T WANNA GET
STUCK IN A POOP
OR HAVE OUR MESSAGE
GO ROUND IN A LOOP
SLIDE OUR WORDS
INTO A SINGLE PICTURE
AND OUR STORY MIGHT JUST
GET A LITTLE RICHER
YEAH, OUR STORY MIGHT
JUST GET A LITTLE RICHER
SO IF YOU WANT YOUR MESSAGE
TO BE TOTALLY LIT
YOU'VE GOTTA USE A PICTOGRAM
TO SAY IT”
Zoey says, “GIVE IT A TRY!”
Credits read, “Apartment 11 productions”
Arianna continues, “LUKAS AND ZOEY REALLY HELPED US
TO SEE THE POWER OF IMAGES.
ALL OVER THE WORLD WE USE
PICTURES AND SYMBOLS
TO COMMUNICATE
IMPORTANT MESSAGES
AND HELP READERS
TO UNDERSTAND.
WHILE WATCHING, WE SAW
THAT ADRIANA, MILA,
JONAH, AND RAPHAEL
SOLVED THE EMOJI PUZZLES
BY PUTTING THE SYMBOLS TOGETHER
SIDE BY SIDE.
IN GRAPHIC TEXTS,
WE OFTEN FIND DIFFERENT FEATURES
THAT HELP US TO BE ABLE
TO SUPPORT OUR UNDERSTANDING.”
Arianna adds, “SOMETIMES CREATORS
OF GRAPHIC TEXTS
USE TITLES,
CAPTIONS, LABELS,
COLUMN AND ROW HEADINGS,
LEGENDS, A SCALE,
EVEN UNITS OF MEASUREMENT.
DEPENDING ON
THE GRAPHIC TEXT,
MANY OF THESE FEATURES CAN BE
USED IN COMBINATION.
LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT A FEW
EXAMPLES OF SOME GRAPHIC TEXT
TO SEE IF YOU CAN
GET A SENSE
OF WHAT THE MESSAGE THAT
THE WRITER IS TRYING TO CONVEY.”
Arianna looks at her computer screen.
She says, “HERE'S THIS FIRST ONE.
IT'S ONE THAT I'VE SEEN
ON THE STREETS MANY TIMES.
WE NOTICE THAT IT'S
A POST OF SOME SORT,
AND IT LOOKS LIKE
IT'S HIGH OFF THE GROUND.
HAVE YOU SEEN
THIS IMAGE BEFORE?
IT HAS A P IN THE MIDDLE,
AND A RED CIRCLE AROUND IT
WITH A DIAGONAL LINE
THROUGH THE MIDDLE.
WHEN I'VE SEEN SYMBOLS
WITH THIS RED CIRCLE AND
A DIAGONAL LINE THROUGH IT,
I KNOW THAT IT MEANS
THAT YOU CAN'T DO SOMETHING.
IN THIS CASE,
THERE'S NO PARKING AT ANY TIME
ALONG THIS STREET
BECAUSE OF THE DOUBLE ARROWS
THAT ARE THERE.
LET'S LOOK
AT ANOTHER GRAPHIC.
THIS LOOKS LIKE A DIAGRAM
OF THE HUMAN BODY.
IT SHOWS
A VARIETY OF ORGANS
THAT MAKE UP
THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM.
SOMETIMES WHEN WE VIEW
DIAGRAMS LIKE THIS,
IT HELPS US TO MAKE SENSE
OF WHAT'S HAPPENING
INSIDE OUR BODIES.
HERE WE GET TO SEE
WHERE THE FOOD GOES IN
AND WHERE IT EVENTUALLY
COMES OUT.”
Arianna adds,
“NOW, THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE
TYPES OF GRAPHICS.
IT'S A GRAPH!
USUALLY WHEN PEOPLE
ARE TRYING TO ORGANIZE DATA
OR SHARE THE RESULTS
WITH OTHERS OF A SURVEY,
A QUICK AND EASY WAY
TO MAKE SENSE OF THE RESULTS
IS JUST BY USING A GRAPH.
THIS IS A BAR GRAPH
THAT EASILY LETS US SEE
THAT 71% OF PEOPLE SURVEYED SAY
THAT THEY HAVE FUN,
RECREATION, AND RELAXATION,
AND THAT THAT'S WHAT THEY GET
OUT OF SPORTS.
BASED ON THE FACT THAT
THE BAR GRAPH ON THE LEFT
IS THE HIGHEST,
WE CAN TELL THAT IT WAS
THE MOST POPULAR RESPONSE.
BASED ON THE HEIGHT
OF THE BAR ON THE RIGHT,
WE KNOW THAT IT RECEIVED
THE FEWEST RESPONSES,
AND THAT ONLY 35% OF PEOPLE
SAID THAT THEY GET
NEW FRIENDS AND ACQUAINTANCES
FROM PLAYING SPORTS.
THIS PROBABLY MEANS THAT THOSE
SURVEYED USUALLY PLAY SPORTS
WITH PEOPLE THAT THEY KNOW.”
Arianna continues,
“THIS ONE IS THE WATER CYCLE.
IT HELPS READERS
TO UNDERSTAND
THAT WATER EVAPORATES
FROM THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH
AND RISES
INTO THE ATMOSPHERE.
FROM THERE,
WATER COOLS AND CONDENSES
INTO RAIN OR SNOW
IN CLOUDS,
AND THEN FALLS AGAIN TO THE
SURFACE AS PRECIPITATION.
THE WATER FALLING ON LAND
COLLECTS IN RIVERS
AND LAKES AND SOIL,
AND MUCH OF IT FLOWS
BACK INTO THE OCEANS
WHERE ONCE AGAIN,
IT'S GOING TO EVAPORATE.
THAT'S THE WATER CYCLE.”
Arianna says, “THIS EXAMPLE
OF THE WATER CYCLE
REMINDS ME OF ONE THAT
I'VE SEEN IN A TEXTBOOK BEFORE.
BY ADDING A DIAGRAM,
IT NOT ONLY HELPS THE READERS
TO VISUALIZE WHAT'S HAPPENING,
BUT ALSO ALLOWS THE WRITER
TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES
MORE EFFECTIVELY.
SO, IT'S A WIN-WIN
FOR BOTH PEOPLE.
THIS LAST GRAPHIC
IS A FLOW CHART.
THIS PERSON
IS TRYING TO THINK
ABOUT THE FLOW FROM LEAVING HOME
TO REACHING SCHOOL.
AFTER THEY LEAVE HOME,
THIS PERSON CHECKS THE TIME.
IF IT'S BEFORE 7:00 AM,
THEY'VE GOT TWO OPTIONS.
THEY CAN EITHER WALK
OR TAKE THE BUS.
EITHER WAY,
THEY REACH SCHOOL.”
Arianna continues:
“THESE ARE JUST SOME
OF THE GRAPHICS
THAT WE SEE
IN THE WORLD AROUND US.
THERE ARE SO MANY
OUT THERE.
WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN GRAPHICS
OR GRAPHIC TEXTS?
AT SCHOOL?
OUT IN THE COMMUNITY?
WHAT MESSAGES WERE THEY
COMMUNICATING TO YOU?
IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T GUESSED,
I LOVE PLANTS.
IN FACT, IF YOU WERE TO TAKE
A TOUR OF THIS ROOM,
YOU WOULD FIND PLANTS
OF ALL SHAPES AND SIZES.
I'VE GOT CACTI--
HERE'S ONE OF MY FAVOURITES.
AND I ALSO HAVE
SOME PRETTY UNIQUE AIR PLANTS,
LIKE THIS ONE.
AIR PLANTS ARE UNIQUE
IN THAT THEY ACTUALLY
DON'T REQUIRE SOIL.
THEY USE THEIR ROOTS,
RIGHT HERE,
TO ANCHOR THEMSELVES
RATHER THAN FOR
THE UPTAKE OF NUTRIENTS.
IN FACT,
THEY GET THEIR NUTRIENTS
FROM THE AIR AND WATER.
I WATER THIS ONE
PROBABLY ABOUT ONCE A WEEK.
PLANTS THAT REQUIRE SOIL
ARE A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT.
THROUGH A PROCESS
CALLED PHOTOSYNTHESIS,
PLANTS GET THEIR NUTRIENTS
AND GROW.
HMM.
THIS IS GIVING ME AN IDEA
FOR A GREAT GRAPHIC TEXT.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT PLANTS
NEED TO GROW?
DO YOU KNOW ALL OF THE PARTS
OF A PLANT?
GRAB YOUR SHEET OF PAPER,
AND WHILE WE WATCH THIS VIDEO
WITH BLYNK AND AAZOO,
SEE IF YOU CAN CREATE
YOUR OWN GRAPHIC TEXT
BASED ON THE PARTS
OF A PLANT.
ALSO INCLUDE
OR CONSIDER INCLUDING
WHAT PLANTS NEED
IN ORDER TO GROW.
IF YOU'VE GOT COLOURED MARKERS
OR COLOURED PENCILS,
CONSIDER ADDING COLOUR TOO.
THINK ABOUT ADDING TITLES
OR LABELS TO YOUR DRAWING
SO THAT IT'S CLEAR
FOR YOUR READER
TO UNDERSTAND EACH
OF THE PARTS OF A PLANT.
ARE YOU READY
TO GET STARTED?
LET'S WATCH.”
Blynk and Aazoo travel in a spaceship.
A dark-haired girl named Yohanna waves.
People appear on monitors. A Cheetah is
measured. Blynk is electrocuted.
Blynk sings to himself, “BLYNK & AAZOO
I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU”
A title reads, “Blynk & Aazoo,
Imagine, investigate, Invent!”
Aazoo dances in a tutu. Blynk looks shocked.
[Excited Squealing]
Aazoo poses.
Blynk says, “HUH?”
Aazoo replies “OOH!”
[Popping]
Aazoo’s tutu flies over its head.
M. A.V.I.S. says,
“2-2 TYPE TUTU DETECTED.”
[HYSTERICAL SQUEALING]
M.A.V.I.S. continues,
“INQUIRY BOOTH TRANSMITTING.”
[Alarm sounding]
M. A.V.I.S. says,
“INCOMING INQUIRY”.
Blynk says,
“AAZOO!”
[Yelping]
Blynk groans, “OOH.”
[Yipping]
A mechanical arm lowers from the ceiling.
It takes off Aazoo’s tutu.
Aazoo says, “AYEE!”
[Chuckling]
Blynk and Aazoo approach two large monitors.
Yohanna appears on one of them.
Latitia says, “HI BLYNK, HI AAZOO.
I'M LATITIA.”
[Greetings]
Blynk and Aazoo wave to Latitia.
Latitia continues,
“I GREW A SUNFLOWER LAST SUMMER
THAT WAS TALLER THAN ME.
IT MADE ME WONDER,
COULD I GROW A PLANT
AS BIG AS A SKYSCRAPER?”
Blynk and Aazoo say “OHHHH”
M. A.V.I.S. adds:
”INVENTION POTENTIAL: HIGH”.
[Whispering]
M.A.V.I.S. continues,
“IT APPEARS YOU HAVE
"PLANTED" AN IDEA
IN BLYNK AND AAZOO'S MINDS.
GET IT? "PLANTED"?”
[Clueless noises]
Blynk and Aazoo shrug.
M.A.V.I.S. says,
“NO IDEAS HAVE BLOSSOMED.”
Blynk says, “JANA! M.A.V.I.S., LATASSA!”
M.A.V.I.S interrupts,
“CALLING INTERSTELLAR
SCIENCE COUNCIL CAPTAIN.”
A captain asks, “BLYNK! AAZOO!
WHO HAS
A QUESTION TODAY?”
Latitia says, “HI. I'M LATITIA
AND I WANT TO KNOW
HOW I CAN GROW A PLANT
AS BIG AS A SKYSCRAPER.”
Anthony replies,
“HI, LATITIA. I'M ANTHONY.
NOW, THAT WOULD BE
A BIG PLANT.”
Blynk and Aazoo agree, “MM-HMM.”
Anthony continues, “OKAY, WELL,
WHY DON'T WE START
BY UNDERSTANDING
HOW PLANTS GROW?
BLYNK, PULL UP THE PLANT FILES-
SUBCATEGORY: FLOWER POWER.”
BLYNK cheers, “YEE-HA”.
A video plays on a screen.
M.A.V.I.S. Instructs,
“THROUGH THEIR ROOTS,
PLANTS ABSORB WATER
FROM THE SOIL.
THROUGH THEIR LEAVES THEY ABSORB
CARBON DIOXIDE FROM THE AIR,
AND ENERGY FROM THE SUN.
TOGETHER,
THESE THREE THINGS
HELP PLANTS PRODUCE
THEIR OWN FOOD.
THIS PROCESS IS CALLED
PHOTOSYNTHESIS.”
Blynk says, “OOH.”
Latitia asks, “PHO-TO-SYNTHESIS?”
Anthony responds, “RIGHT.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS MEANS TO PUT
TOGETHER WITH THE HELP OF LIGHT.
THROUGH PHOTOSYNTHESIS,
PLANTS MAKE A NATURAL SUGAR
CALLED GLUCOSE,
WHICH THEY USE FOR ENERGY.
THE GLUCOSE THEN GOES TO
ALL PARTS OF THE PLANT-
THE LEAVES,
FLOWERS, AND FRUIT!”
Latitia replies, “COOL!”
Blynk says, “AYEE!”
Latitia asks, “SO,
“TO HELP A PLANT GROW TALL,
I NEED TO MAKE SURE IT HAS
SUNLIGHT, AIR, AND WATER.”
Anthony answers:
“YOU GOT IT!
THAT'S WHAT YOU NEED
FOR PHOTOSYNTHESIS.”
Aazoo says, “TAH-DAH!”
M.A.V.I.S adds,
“PHOTOGRAPH
AND SYNTHESIZER DETECTED,
BUT NO PHOTOSYNTHESIS
OCCURRING.”
[Disappointed groaning]
Latitia asks, “SO, WHAT'S THE BIGGEST PLANT
I COULD GROW?”
Anthony says, “BLYNK,
CHECK PLANT FILES, PLEASE-
SUBCATEGORY:
THE HUMONGOUS AMONG US.”
A large pink flower appears on the monitor.
Blynk and Aazoo gasp.
Anthony continues, “THE LARGEST FLOWER
IS CALLED THE TITAN ARUM.”
Latitia replies, “OOH.
IT'S SO PRETTY!
I WONDER WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE.”
M.A.V.I.S. responds,
“SOURCING SCENT FILES.”
Anthony pleads, “NO, M.A.V.I.S., DON'T!”
M.A.V.I.S. says, “RELEASING
TITAN ARUM SCENT.”
[Scent hissing through vents]
[Blynk and Aazoo gag]
Anthony adds, “THE TITAN ARUM STINKS.
IT SMELLS SO BAD,
IT'S ALSO KNOWN
AS THE CORPSE FLOWER.
IT HAS THE COLOUR AND SMELL
OF ROTTING MEAT
TO ATTRACT THE FLIES AND BEETLES
THAT POLLINATE IT.”
Latitia replies, “EWW!”
Anthony adds, “BUT IT IS HUMONGOUS!”
M.A.V.I.S. adds,
“THE TITAN ARUM CAN GROW
TO THREE METERS TALL
AND THREE METERS IN DIAMETER.
BE-"LEAF" IT OR NOT.
GET IT? BE-"LEAF"?”
[Groaning]
Anthony continues,
“JUST ONE LEAF OF THE TITAN ARUM
CAN BE AS BIG AS A SMALL TREE!”
Latitia asks,
“HMM. BUT IS THERE A HUMONGOUS
PLANT THAT'S NOT STINKY?”
Anthony answers,
“FORTUNATELY, YES. BLYNK?”
Blynk says, “YEE-HA.”
Anthony adds,
“THE TALLEST FLOWERING PLANT
IN THE WORLD
IS ACTUALLY A TYPE
OF EUCALYPTUS TREE
FOUND IN AUSTRALIA
CALLED THE SWAMP GUM.”
Latitia asks, “SO, HOW BIG IS IT?”
M.A.V.I.S. replies,
“THE SWAMP GUM CAN REACH HEIGHTS
OVER 90 METRES.
IT IS THE SECOND TALLEST TREE
IN THE WORLD.
TREES CAN GROW TALLER
THAN OTHER PLANTS
BECAUSE THEY ARE SUPPORTED
BY TRUNKS MADE OF WOOD AND BARK.”
Latitia asks, “SO, IF THIS IS
THE SECOND TALLEST TREE--’
Anthony interrupts,
“JUST WAIT
TILL YOU MEET HYPERION.”
Latitia asks, “WHO?”
Blynk says, “AYEE!”
M.A.V.I.S. instructs,
“COAST REDWOODS
OR SEQUOIA SEMPERVIRENS
HOLD THE RECORD
FOR THE TALLEST TREES ON EARTH.
REDWOODS APPEARED ON EARTH
JUST AFTER
THE TIME OF THE DINOSAURS
AND HAVE BEEN AROUND
MUCH LONGER THAN HUMANS.”
Anthony adds,
“THIS NARROW COASTAL PART
OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
HAS THE IDEAL CONDITIONS
FOR REDWOODS TO FLOURISH.
IT'S A VERY UNIQUE PLACE.
IN FACT, THERE'S NO OTHER PLACE
LIKE IT ON EARTH!”
M.A.V.I.S. agrees, “AFFIRMATIVE.
COOL, MOIST AIR
OFF THE PACIFIC OCEAN
KEEPS THE TREES DAMP,
EVEN IN HOT SUMMERS.
THE SOIL IS RICH
IN NUTRIENTS.”
Blynk says, “OH.”
M.A.V.I.S. continues, “REDWOODS HAVE FEW
NATURAL ENEMIES
AND THEIR THICK BARK PROTECTS
THE TREES AGAINST FOREST FIRES.”
Anthony says,
“IN THESE EXCELLENT CONDITIONS,
IT'S NOT UNUSUAL FOR REDWOODS
TO GROW 60 TO 90 METRES TALL,
AND IT'S IN
REDWOOD NATIONAL PARK
THAT YOU WILL FIND THE TALLEST
TREE IN THE WORLD.”
Latitia exclaims, “HYPERION?”
Anthony responds, “YEP!
THE TALLEST REDWOOD THERE
IS INDEED HYPERION.”
Latitia asks,
“SO, HOW TALL IS IT?”
Anthony answers, “HYPERION IS ABOUT
120 METRES TALL.
THAT'S THE HEIGHT
OF A 40-STORY BUILDING!”
Latitia says, “PERFECT!
THAT'S WHAT I WANT.
SO, CAN I PLANT ONE
IN MY BACKYARD?”
Anthony replies,
“WELL, YOU COULD, BUT REDWOODS
TAKE HUNDREDS OF YEARS
TO REACH
THEIR MAXIMUM HEIGHT.
WE THINK HYPERION IS
BETWEEN 600 AND 800 YEARS OLD.”
Latitia says, “OH, NO.
THAT'S WAY TOO LONG
TO WAIT.”
Anthony says,
“WELL, IF YOU CAN'T GROW A TREE
AS TALL AS A SKYSCRAPER,
HOW ABOUT LIVING IN A SKYSCRAPER
COVERED IN TREES?”
Latitia says, “REALLY? WOW!
THAT SOUNDS COOL.”
Anthony commands,
“BLYNK, PULL UP
THE FUTURE FILES, PLEASE.
SUBCATEGORY:
VERTICAL FORESTS.
JUST IMAGINE,
IN THE FUTURE,
BEING ABLE TO LIVE
IN A FOREST IN THE SKY.
WELL, RIGHT NOW,
IN CITIES
ALL AROUND THE WORLD,
PLANS ARE BEING DEVELOPED
TO CREATE THESE APARTMENT
BUILDINGS COVERED IN PLANTS!
IN FACT,
ITALY ALREADY HAS TWO!”
M.A.V.I.S. adds,
“AFFIRMATIVE.
IN THE ITALIAN CITY OF MILAN,
TWO SKYSCRAPERS
ARE CALLED IL BOSCO VERTICALE,
WHICH MEANS
"THE VERTICAL FOREST".
MORE THAN 800 TREES
AND 15,000 PLANTS
LIVE ON THE BALCONIES
OF THE TOWERS.”
Latitia exclaims, “WHAT A GREAT IDEA!”
Anthony continues, “THE PLANTS ARE NOT
JUST GREAT TO LOOK AT.
THEY ALSO REDUCE POLLUTION
WHILE PRODUCING OXYGEN,
HELP MAKE THE TEMPERATURE
AND MOISTURE
IN THE BUILDINGS JUST RIGHT,
PROVIDE SHADE IN THE SUMMER,
AND BLOCK THE WIND
IN THE WINTER.”
Latitia says, “I'D LOVE TO LIVE
IN A PLACE LIKE THAT!
PLANTS ARE SO GOOD
FOR US.
WE SHOULD GROW THEM
EVERYWHERE!”
Blynk says, “GA-HA!”
M.A.V.I.S. says,
“BLYNK, THE INVENTION STATION
IS READY.”
[Beeping Music plays]
Blynk says “OOH”
Blynk runs through a doorway. It flicks
Switches and a liquid moves through a tube.
Blynk uses an eyedropper. He rolls out a
cart with a beaker on it
Aazoo says, “OOH!”
[CHUCKLING]
Blynk says, “WAH!”
Blynk holds the eyedropper as he pulls a seed
Out of a sack.
Latitia asks, “IS THAT GOING TO BE A PLANT
THAT CAN GROW ANYWHERE?”
Blynk replies, “OH, MMM--”
He uses the eyedropper to drop liquid in a
flower pot.
Blynk says, “HAA!”
Aazoo drops more seeds into the flower pot.
Aazoo says, “AH!”
Blynk replies, “PIKA!”
M.A.V.I.S. says,
“RAPID GERMINATION DETECTED.
OUT-OF-CONTROL GROWTH ABOUT TO--”
Plants grow out of the spaceship.
Aazoo says, “AHH!”
Blynk says, “AAZOO!”
M.A.V.I.S. continues,
“INVENTION FAILURE.
NO, INVENTION SUCCESSFUL.”
Latitia says, “WOW.
THAT'S A LOT OF PLANTS.
MAYBE WHEN I GROW UP,
I'LL FIGURE OUT HOW TO GROW
TREES ON THE SPACE STATION!”
Anthony responds, “THAT WOULD BE SO COOL!”
Latitia says, “THANKS, EVERYONE.”
Anthony, Aazoo, and Blynk say “BYE!”
M.A.V.I.S. adds,
“THE SEARCH FOR INVENTIONS
CONTINUES.
ALL SYSTEMS ENGAGED.”
Blynk and Aazoo cheer.
[Theme song plays]
A robotic voice sings,
“BLYNK AND AAZOO
I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU”
Arianna says, “I LOVE THIS EPISODE.
PROBABLY BECAUSE
IT WAS ALL ABOUT PLANTS.
AS YOU WATCHED, DID YOU SEE WHAT
WAS REQUIRED FOR PLANTS TO GROW?
DID YOU CATCH
ALL THE PARTS OF A PLANT?
WHILE WATCHING, I LEARNED
THAT PLANTS NEED SUN AND WATER
AND THAT THEY'RE VERY IMPORTANT
FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO GROW.
SOME PLANTS ALSO NEED SOIL.
IN THE SOIL WE CAN FIND
THE ROOTS, AS WELL AS THE STEM.
GROWING UP TOWARDS THE SUN
WE FIND THE STEM OF THE PLANT
AND ON THE STEM
IS WHERE WE FIND THE LEAVES.
I THOUGHT IT WAS PRETTY NEAT
TO SEE THE CORPSE FLOWER.
I'M SO GLAD THERE WAS
NO SMELL-O-VISION.
AND I ALSO NOTICED
IN THE VIDEO
THAT THEY USED MEASUREMENTS
AND A SCALE
TO HELP US UNDERSTAND JUST HOW
BIG THE DIFFERENT TREES ARE.”
THIS IS MY GRAPHIC TEXT.
Arianna holds up a drawing of a plant.
Arianna says, “CHECK IT OUT!
I INCLUDED ALL OF THE ELEMENTS
THAT PLANTS NEED,
AND I DREW THE PLANT
IN THE MIDDLE.
SO, HERE I'VE GOT SOME WATER,
PROBABLY FROM RAIN.
I'VE GOT THE SUN UP HERE,
AND THEN I'VE GOT THE SOIL
ON THE BOTTOM.
IN THE MIDDLE HERE
I'VE GOT MY PLANT
WITH DIFFERENT PARTS
THAT ARE LABELED.”
Arianna asks, “WHAT DID YOU DRAW?
THE NEAT THING
ABOUT A GRAPHIC TEXT
IS THAT THEY CAN SOMETIMES
BE DIFFERENT
FROM ANOTHER GRAPHIC TEXT
EVEN IF THEY'RE ABOUT
THE SAME THING.
AFTER YOU'RE FINISHED
WITH YOUR GRAPHIC TEXT,
IT'S ALWAYS IMPORTANT
TO REFLECT ON YOUR WORK.
HERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS
THAT YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER.
DOES MY GRAPHIC APPEAL
TO THE READER?
DOES IT INCLUDE COLOUR
OR INTERESTING PICTURES?
DID I CONVEY THE INFORMATION
PRESENTED IN MY RESEARCH
SO THAT THE READER
CAN LEARN SOMETHING NEW?
DID I PROOFREAD
MY GRAPHIC TEXT
FOR SPELLING
OR GRAMMATICAL ERRORS?
DID I USE THE SPACE
ON THE PAGE WISELY
SO THAT THE INFORMATION
IS EVENLY SPREAD OUT
AND THAT THE TEXT
IS A GOOD SIZE FOR THE READER?
WHEN I LOOK
AT MY GRAPHIC TEXT,
I THINK IT APPEALS TO THE READER
BECAUSE I USED BRIGHT COLOURS
AND I ALSO USED COLOURS
THAT YOU'D NORMALLY SEE
IN A DIAGRAM OF A PLANT.
COLOURS LIKE BROWN
FOR THE SOIL
AND GREEN FOR THE STEM
AS WELL AS THE LEAVES.
I THINK THAT I'M EFFECTIVELY
COMMUNICATING MY MESSAGE
BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH IT'S NOT
THE MOST PERFECT DRAWING,
THE READER CAN STILL SEE
ALL OF THE IMPORTANT PARTS
AND I'VE ALSO INCLUDED
CLEAR LABELS.
I TRIED TO MAKE THEM
CAPITALIZED.”
Arianna continues,
“AS I WAS WATCHING,
I ALSO MADE SURE THAT I WROTE
DOWN THE CORRECT SPELLING
FOR EACH OF MY WORDS.
THEY WERE ALSO WORDS THAT I WAS
PRETTY FAMILIAR WITH,
BUT IN CASE THERE WAS ONE
THAT MAYBE I WAS UNSURE ABOUT,
I KNOW THAT I CAN ALWAYS
GO BACK TO A DICTIONARY
TO DOUBLE-CHECK
THE SPELLING.
I WOULD HATE TO CREATE
A GRAPHIC TEXT FOR SOMEONE
AND HAVE SPELLING MISTAKES
ALL THROUGHOUT IT.
IF YOU LOOK AT MY DIAGRAM,
I THINK THAT
IT'S ABOUT THE RIGHT SIZE.
I USED THE MAJORITY
OF THE PAGE
SO THAT IT'S LARGE ENOUGH
FOR THE READER
TO BOTH SEE AND READ
MY INFORMATION.
I WOULD SAY THAT
I SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED
MY FIRST INFO GRAPHIC
FOR TODAY.
HOW ABOUT YOU?
HOW DO YOU FEEL
ABOUT YOUR INFO GRAPHIC?
I'M SURE IT'S A GREAT ONE.”
Arianna says,
“HERE'S ANOTHER GRAPHIC TEXT
TO HELP US UNDERSTAND
THE STAGES OF THE GROWTH
OF A PLANT IN A MORE CLEAR WAY.
HERE WE HAVE THE LIFE CYCLE
OF A PLANT.
I KNOW THIS
BECAUSE OF THE TITLE.
THE SUBHEADING TELLS ME
THAT ALL LIVING THINGS
HAVE A LIFE CYCLE.
IT ALSO LETS ME KNOW
THAT THE STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT
THAT A LIVING THING
GROWS THROUGH
IS CALLED THE LIFE CYCLE.
I'M GONNA START OFF IN THE
MIDDLE OF THIS GRAPHIC TEXT.
THERE'S AN IMAGE OF A SUN,
AND IT'S TELLING ME
THAT THE SUN PLAYS
AN IMPORTANT ROLE
IN THE LIFE CYCLE
OF EVERY LIVING BEING.
I THINK THAT IT'S AT
THE CENTRE OF THIS TEXT
BECAUSE IT'S IMPORTANT
AND PLAYS A ROLE
AT EVERY SINGLE STAGE
OF THE LIFE CYCLE.
NEXT, I'M GONNA MOVE ON
TO THE SEED.
HERE IT TELLS ME
THAT IS PLANTED IN THE SOIL,
AND THAT IT NEEDS
SUN AND WATER.
I NOTICE
THAT THERE'S AN ARROW
AND THE ARROW IS NOW MOVING
FROM SEED TO GERMINATION,
WHICH IS THE NEXT STAGE
IN THE LIFE CYCLE.
HERE, ARROWS WILL GUIDE ME
ON TO THE NEXT STAGE.
OFTEN IN GRAPHIC TEXT,
ARROWS OR LINES ARE USED
TO SHOW MOVEMENT.
IT'S ALSO USED FOR DIRECTION
OR TO BE ABLE TO CONNECT
TO THINGS THAT THEY ARE NAMING.
NEXT, WE'RE GONNA MOVE ON
TO GERMINATION.
THIS IS WHEN THE CONDITIONS OF
WATER, SUN, AND SOIL ARE MET,
AND THE SEED CAN GERMINATE
AND GROW A SPROUT.
FROM THERE, WE MOVE ON
TO THE ROOTS AND STEM.
THE STEM TRIES TO PUSH ITS WAY
UPWARDS TOWARDS THE SOIL,
AND THE ROOTS GROW DEEP
TOWARDS THE GROUND.”
Arianna goes on,
“THE NEXT STAGE
IN THE LIFE CYCLE OF A PLANT
IS THE SEEDLING.
THE YOUNG PLANT GROWS LEAVES
AND GROWS TOWARDS THE SUN.
THE SUN WILL HELP WITH THE
PROCESS OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS
AND WILL ALSO HELP THE SEEDLING
TO GROW INTO A MATURE PLANT.
FINALLY,
THE PLANT IS MATURED
AND WILL MOVE
INTO POLLINATION.
THE MATURE PLANT
CONTAINS FLOWERS.
THESE FLOWERS HAVE SEEDS.
THE SEEDS ARE POLLINATED
BY ANIMALS OR THE WIND.
THEY SCATTER THE SEEDS
AND HELP TO PRODUCE
EVEN MORE FLOWERS.
ONCE AGAIN,
WHEN THE SEEDS ARE SPREAD,
THE LIFE CYCLE BEGINS
ALL OVER AGAIN.
THAT'S KIND OF WHY WE CALL IT
THE LIFE CYCLE.
I WANT YOU TO NOTICE
THE LABELS.
EXAMINE HOW EACH OF THEM
ARE RELATED TO THE GRAPHIC.
EACH LABEL HAS A PURPOSE.
THE MOST IMPORTANT LABELS
MAY BE EITHER IN CAPITAL LETTERS
OR BOLD TYPE
OR MAYBE USING
A LARGER FONT.
KEEP THAT IN MIND
FOR YOUR OWN GRAPHIC TEXTS
WHEN YOU'RE CREATING THEM.
YOU CAN USE
DIFFERENT TYPES OF FONT
IN ORDER TO BRING DIFFERENT
TYPES OF MEANING TO YOUR WORDS.
WHEN WE LOOK
AT GRAPHIC TEXTS,
IT'S ALSO IMPORTANT TO IDENTIFY
THE RELATIONSHIP
AMONG THE VISUALS AND THE
INFORMATION THAT'S THERE.
HERE WE CAN SEE THAT THERE ARE
DIFFERENT STAGES OF THE PLANT
FROM SEED TO POLLINATION.”
Arianna adds,
“EACH IMAGE
IS STRATEGICALLY PLACED
TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND
THE PHASES OF THE PLANT'S LIFE.
YOU CAN SEE IT
ACTUALLY CHANGING
AND GROWING BIGGER AND BIGGER
AS WE MOVE THROUGH THE CYCLE.
IT STARTS OFF AS A SEED,
AND THEN FINALLY YOU SEE
A FULL PLANT WITH ITS FLOWER
AND THERE'S A BEE
THAT'S POLLINATING IT.
NOW THAT YOU KNOW A LITTLE BIT
MORE ABOUT GRAPHIC TEXTS,
IT'S TIME FOR YOU
TO CREATE ANOTHER ONE!
REMEMBER WHEN CREATING
A GRAPHIC TEXT,
YOU MAY WANNA MAKE USE
OF DIFFERENT THINGS.
YOU WANNA THINK
ABOUT TITLES.
SOMETIMES
THEY'RE IN BOLD FONT
SO THAT IMPORTANT WORDS
STAND OUT TO YOUR READER.
YOU MIGHT ALSO WISH
TO USE DIFFERENT COLOURS
LIKE I DID
IN MY OWN GRAPHIC TEXT.
YOU CAN USE
CAPTIONS OR LABELS,
AND THESE REALLY HELP
TO DESCRIBE
WHAT'S HAPPENING
IN YOUR IMAGES.
ARROWS OR LINES HELP WITH
THE FLOW OR MOVEMENT OF IDEAS,
SIMILAR TO THE ARROWS
THAT YOU SAW
IN THE LIFE CYCLE
OF A PLANT.”
Arianna continues,
“THESE ARE JUST SOME
OF THE GRAPHIC TEXT FEATURES
THAT YOU MIGHT LIKE TO USE.
REMEMBER, THE GRAPHIC TEXT
IS A VISUAL WAY
TO REPRESENT SOMETHING.
SO, DO YOU REMEMBER
AT THE BEGINNING
I ASKED YOU TO GRAB
TWO PIECES OF PAPER?
WELL, WE KNOW THAT
YOU'VE ALREADY USED ONE,
AND NOW IT'S TIME
TO USE THE SECOND ONE.
ARE YOU READY?
GRAB YOUR SHEET OF PAPER
AND WHATEVER IT IS
THAT YOU'RE GONNA WRITE WITH.
YOU CAN CHOOSE
ANYTHING AT ALL.
THIS TIME, YOU'RE GONNA BE
MAKING A GRAPHIC TEXT
ABOUT CHANGES OF MATTER.”
Arianna says, “I KNOW,
YOU'RE PROBABLY THINKING
IT'S SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT
FROM A PLANT.
BUT IT'S ALL RELATED
TO SCIENCE.
AND COME TO THINK OF IT,
PLANTS NEED WATER,
AND WE CAN ACTUALLY SEE WATER
IN ALL THREE STATES OF MATTER.
SOLID, LIQUID, AND GAS.
LET'S WATCH A QUICK
SCIENCE XPLOSION
VIDEO
ABOUT SOLIDS, LIQUIDS,
AND GASES, TO HELP US LEARN.
AS YOU WATCH,
START THINKING
ABOUT HOW YOU WOULD CREATE
A GRAPHIC TEXT.
THINK ABOUT WHAT INFORMATION AND
FACTS YOU WOULD LIKE TO INCLUDE.
WHAT COLOURS?
WHAT LAYOUT WOULD YOU LIKE
TO BEST SHARE THIS INFORMATION
WITH YOUR READERS?
WHAT GRAPHICS OR IMAGES
WOULD ALSO BE ABLE
TO BEST CONVEY
THIS INFORMATION?
LASTLY, WHAT'S THE ORDER?
HOW WILL ONE THING FLOW
FROM ONE TO THE NEXT?
I'LL GIVE YOU
A BIT OF A HINT HERE.
SIMILAR TO THE LIFE CYCLE
OF A PLANT,
THE CHANGES OF STATE FOR WATER
HAPPEN IN A CYCLE.
CONSIDER DRAWING AND WRITING
AS WE WATCH.”
A female singer sings,
“WHAT A HIT,
IT'S NOT A TRICK
IT'S
SCIENCE XPLOSION!
JUST FOR YOU, COOL AND NEW
SCIENCE XPLOSION!”
A female narrator says,
“AH, ERIC,
A GREAT MAN OF SCIENCE.
CAN YOU ANSWER MY QUESTIONS?
OKAY,
HERE'S MY FIRST QUESTION.
ALL MATTER IN THE UNIVERSE
EXISTS IN THREE MAIN STATES.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT THEY ARE?
CAN YOU SHOW ME?”
Eric pours water into a cup.
The narrator says, “GOOD!
THE LIQUID STATE, LIKE WATER,
IS ONE OF THEM.
NEXT?”
Eric pours an ice cube into his hand.
The narrator says,
“YES, THE SOLID STATE,
LIKE ICE, IS ANOTHER.
ONE MORE?”
Eric rises out of Eric’s hands.
The narrator continues,
“THE LAST ONE IS THE GASEOUS
OR VAPOROUS STATE, LIKE STEAM.
VERY GOOD, YOU GREAT MAN
OF SCIENCE, YOU!
NOW, FOR MY SECOND QUESTION-
IS IT POSSIBLE
TO CREATE A LIQUID
THAT ALSO ACTS
LIKE A SOLID?”
Eric looks unsure. He shakes his head.
The narrator says,
“YOU SAY NO,
BUT IT IS POSSIBLE!
DEFINITELY YES.
I CAN EVEN SHOW YOU
HOW TO DO IT.
BUT YOU'LL HAVE TO COME OUTSIDE
TO FIND OUT MORE.”
Eric walks outside with an inflatable duck
around his waist. He approaches a small pool.
The narrator says,
“OOPS, SORRY, ERIC.
WHEN I ASKED YOU TO BRING YOUR
POOL, IT WASN'T FOR SWIMMING.”
Eric takes off the inflatable duck.
The narrator continues,
“WE'RE USING THE POOL
AS A BIG BOWL
TO MIX WATER AND CORNSTARCH.
TO GET STARTED,
WE NEED CORNSTARCH-
LOTS AND LOTS
OF CORNSTARCH.”
Eric pours a bag of corn starch into the pool.
The narrator adds,
“YOU CAN ALSO
DO THIS EXPERIMENT
BY MIXING WATER AND CORNSTARCH
IN A MUCH SMALLER BOWL,
BUT THIS IS GOING TO BE
SO MUCH MORE SPECTACULAR!”
Eric adds more corn starch to the pool.
The narrator says,
“OKAY, NOW ADD WATER
UNTIL THE MIXTURE
FEELS AS THICK AS HONEY,
ABOUT TWO PARTS CORNSTARCH
TO ONE PART WATER.”
Eric fills a pitcher with water and pours
it into the pool.
The narrator continues,
“THE SUBSTANCE YOU ARE MAKING,
ERIC,
IS CALLED OOBLECK,
BUT WHEN YOU APPLY
FORCE QUICKLY,
IT ACTS LIKE A SOLID.”
Eric adds more water and stirs.
The narrator adds, “AT A CERTAIN POINT, YOU HAVE TO
MIX IT VERY SLOWLY.
EVEN THOUGH IT'S A LIQUID,
IT GETS VERY HARD TO STIR
AFTER A WHILE.
GREAT JOB.”
Eric gives a thumbs up.
The narrator says, “PERFECT!
TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES
AND WALK ON THE OOBLECK.”
Eric looks unsure. He approaches the pool.
The narrator continues,
“YEP, SHOES OFF.
Eric takes off his shoes and steps into the pool.
[Fanfare playing]
The narrator says,
“AS YOU CAN SEE,
OOBLECK ACTS LIKE A SOLID
WHEN YOU APPLY FORCE,
SUCH AS WALKING ON IT.”
Eric walks across the oobleck.
The narrator adds,
“BUT WHAT IF YOU STOP WALKING
AND STAND STILL?”
Eric stands in the middle of the pool.
His feet sink.
[Suspenseful music playing]
The narrator says,
“NOW IT ACTS LIKE A LIQUID!
PRETTY AMAZING.”
Eric stands at a chalkboard.
He draws a circle and hits it with chalk.
The narrator says,
“WATER IS ONE OF THE ONLY
SUBSTANCES ON EARTH
THAT CAN CHANGE EASILY
FROM ONE STATE TO ANOTHER.
WATER CAN BE A LIQUID,
A SOLID LIKE ICE,
AND GAS OR VAPOUR,
LIKE STEAM.”
A thermometer and a beaker appear.
The narrator continues,
“USUALLY WHEN A SUBSTANCE
CHANGES FROM A LIQUID
TO A SOLID STATE,
IT LOSES VOLUME.
THAT MEANS IT TAKES UP
LESS SPACE.
BUT NOT WATER.
IT'S THE ONLY SUBSTANCE
THAT INCREASES IN VOLUME
WHEN IT FREEZES.
A BOTTLE OF FROZEN WATER
CAN BURST IN THE FREEZER
IF THE BOTTLE ISN'T BIG ENOUGH
WHEN THE WATER EXPANDS.”
Eric stands in the swimming pool.
The narrator adds,
“NOW THAT YOU HAVE
THE POWER OF OOBLECK,
YOU CAN TRY THIS EXPERIMENT AT
HOME WITH THE HELP OF AN ADULT.
TRY MOVING MORE SLOWLY,
ERIC.
IF YOU USE TOO MUCH FORCE,
IT ACTS LIKE A SOLID.”
Eric pulls his feet out of the oobleck
The narrator says,
“AND DON'T FORGET,
IT'S NOT MAGIC.
IT'S SCIENCE!”
Eric picks up his shoes and runs away
from the swimming pool.
A graphic reads, “Science Xplosion.
Produced by GAPC Entertainment.”
Arianna says,
“SO, THERE YOU HAVE IT.
THERE ARE THREE STATES
OF MATTER.
SOLIDS, LIQUIDS, AND GASES.
SOLIDS-
THEY MAKE THEIR OWN SHAPE.
THE SHAPE CHANGES
IF IT'S CRUSHED
OR IF FORCES ACT UPON IT.
THE MOLECULES ARE
REALLY TIGHTLY PACKED TOGETHER
AND THERE'S
VERY LITTLE MOVEMENT.
FOR LIQUIDS,
THEY CAN CHANGE SHAPE.
THEY ACTUALLY TAKE ON
THE SHAPE OF THE CONTAINER
THAT THEY'RE IN.
MOLECULES ARE CLOSE TOGETHER
BUT THEY'RE ALSO FREE
TO MOVE AROUND.
AND LIQUIDS, WE KNOW,
THEY FLOW.
GASES, THOSE MOLECULES
ARE SPREAD FAR APART.
MOLECULES BOUNCE AROUND
BECAUSE OF THE FACT
THAT THEY ARE FULL OF ENERGY.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT SOLIDS,
LIQUIDS, AND GASES?
WHAT WERE YOUR GRAPHIC TEXT
ABOUT THIS INFORMATION
LOOK LIKE?”
Arianna continues,
“HERE'S AN EXAMPLE THAT I WANT
TO SHARE WITH YOU.
YOU'LL SEE THAT
THERE ARE IMAGES HERE
THAT REPRESENT WATER
IN EACH OF ITS STATES.
THERE ARE ICE CUBES
AND YOU'LL ALSO SEE THAT THERE'S
A GLASS OF WATER AND STEAM.
RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE THERE'S THE
MOLECULAR STRUCTURE OF WATER,
WHICH IS MADE UP
OF TWO HYDROGEN MOLECULES
AND ONE OXYGEN MOLECULE.
THERE ARE ALSO IMAGES
TO REPRESENT WHAT
THE MOLECULES LOOK LIKE
IN EACH OF THE STATES.
THERE ARE TITLES AND LABELS TO
HELP THE READER TO UNDERSTAND
ALL OF THE INFORMATION
THAT'S PRESENTED TO THEM.
YOU'LL NOTICE ALSO
THAT THE TITLES ARE BOLD
FOR EACH OF THOSE STATES,
AND THAT THE ARROWS
HELP THE READER
TO UNDERSTAND
THE CHANGES OF STATE.
WHEN WATER GOES
FROM A SOLID TO A GAS,
WE CALL IT SUBLIMATION.
WHEN WATER GOES
FROM A GAS TO A SOLID,
WE CALL IT DEPOSITION.
WHEN WATER GOES
FROM A SOLID TO A LIQUID,
WE CALL THAT MELTING.
AND WHEN WATER
GOES FROM A SOLID--
ACTUALLY FROM A LIQUID
TO A SOLID,
WE CALL THAT SOLIDIFICATION.
WHEN WATER GOES
FROM A LIQUID TO A GAS,
THAT'S EVAPORATION.
AND THEN LASTLY,
WHEN WATER GOES
FROM GAS TO A LIQUID,
WE CALL IT CONDENSATION.
YOU'LL SEE THAT COLUMNS
AT THE BOTTOM
WERE USED TO DESCRIBE
EACH OF THE CHANGES OF STATE.
THIS IS JUST ONE EXAMPLE
OF WHAT A GRAPHIC TEXT
ABOUT THE CHANGES OF MATTER
FOR WATER MAY LOOK LIKE.
WHAT WOULD YOURS LOOK LIKE?
IF YOU'RE NOT FINISHED YET,
DON'T WORRY.
IT'S OKAY.
KEEP WORKING ON IT.
EVEN AFTER THE SHOW,
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE
WHAT YOU'VE COME UP WITH.”
Arianna adds,
“ALSO, I WANT YOU TO THINK
ABOUT ASKING YOURSELF
THOSE IMPORTANT
REFLECTION QUESTIONS,
ONCE YOU'VE FINISHED
YOUR GRAPHIC TEXT.
REFLECTION IS ALWAYS AN
IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR LEARNING.
HERE ARE
THOSE QUESTIONS AGAIN.
DOES MY GRAPHIC
APPEAL TO THE READER?
DOES IT INCLUDE COLOUR
AND/OR INTERESTING PICTURES?
DID I CONVEY THE INFORMATION
PRESENTED IN MY RESEARCH
SO THAT THE READER WILL BE ABLE
TO LEARN SOMETHING NEW?
DID I PROOF ME MY-- BLAH.
WHOA, EXCUSE ME.
DID I PROOFREAD MY GRAPHIC FOR
SPELLING AND GRAMMATICAL ERRORS?
DID I USE THE SPACE
ON THE PAGE WISELY
SO THAT THE INFORMATION
IS EVENLY SPREAD OUT
AND THE TEXT IS A GOOD SIZE
FOR THE READER TO SEE?
ANSWERING THESE QUESTIONS
WILL HELP MAKE YOUR
GRAPHIC TEXTS EVEN BETTER.”
Arianna says,
“TODAY WE LEARNED
ALL ABOUT GRAPHIC TEXTS.
GRAPHIC TEXTS ARE
AN INCREASINGLY POPULAR WAY
TO SHARE INFORMATION
IN NEWSPAPERS, MAGAZINES,
TEXTBOOKS,
AND EVEN ONLINE.
THESE VISUAL REPRESENTATIONS
OF INFORMATION
ARE DESIGNED TO MAKE
BIG, COMPLEX IDEAS
MORE EASY FOR US
TO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND.
WE LEARNED THAT GRAPHIC TEXTS
HAVE FEATURES SUCH AS TITLES,
CAPTIONS, LABELS,
COLUMN AND ROW HEADINGS,
LEGENDS, A SCALE,
AND EVEN UNITS OF MEASUREMENT.
I HOPE THAT YOU GOT STARTED
ON YOUR GRAPHIC TEXT
FOR THE STATES OF MATTER.
IF NOT, REMEMBER,
THERE'S STILL TIME.
JUST BECAUSE THE SHOW
IS COMING TO AN END
DOESN'T MEAN THAT
THE LEARNING HAS TO STOP.
TAKE SOME TIME AFTER THE SHOW
TO PUT THE FINISHING TOUCHES
ON YOUR GRAPHIC TEXT.
AND REMEMBER
TO ASK YOURSELF
THOSE IMPORTANT
REFLECTION QUESTIONS.
REFLECTION
IS ALWAYS IMPORTANT.”
Arianna closes,
”THANKS FOR SPENDING THIS
POWER
HOUR OF LEARNING
WITH ME,
AND UNTIL NEXT TIME,
PLEASE TAKE CARE.
BYE!”
Text reads, “TVO would like to thank all the teachers involved in the power hour of learning at the continue to teach the children of Ontario from their homes.”
Credits read, “TVO Kids Power Hour of Learning. TVO.”
TVOKIDS POWER HOUR OF LEARNING.”
Text reads, “Today’s junior lesson, Graphic Texts”
Arianna says, “HI, EVERYONE. I'M ARIANNA.
THANK YOU FOR JOINING ME FOR
TODAY'S POWER HOUR OF LEARNING.
TODAY WE'RE GOING TO BE LEARNING
ABOUT GRAPHIC TEXTS.
FOR THIS LESSON, YOU'RE GONNA
NEED TWO SHEETS OF PAPER
AND SOMETHING TO WRITE WITH.
IT CAN BE ANYTHING.
TODAY WE'RE GONNA SEE IF WE CAN
CREATE OUR OWN GRAPHIC TEXTS.
DON'T HAVE YOUR SHEET OF PAPER
OR A WRITING TOOL HANDY?
NO WORRIES.
FEEL FREE TO GRAB THEM
BECAUSE WE'RE GONNA GET STARTED
IN JUST ABOUT A MINUTE OR SO.
AS I MENTIONED BEFORE,
TODAY WE'RE GONNA
BE EXPLORING
THE WONDERFUL WORLD
OF GRAPHIC TEXTS.
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD
OF THE SAYING,
"A PICTURE IS WORTH
A THOUSAND WORDS"?
WHAT THAT MEANS IS THAT
SOMETIMES GRAPHICS OR PICTURES
CAN CONVEY A MESSAGE
MORE EFFECTIVELY THAN WORDS,
OR CAN BE USED
ALONGSIDE WORDS
TO MAKE THE MESSAGE
BETTER UNDERSTOOD BY THE READER.”
Arianna continues, “A GRAPHIC TEXT IS A PICTURE
WITH OR WITHOUT
SENTENCES OR PHRASES
THAT HELP THE WRITER
EXPRESS THE IDEAS
THAT THEY WANT THE READER
TO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND.
SOMETIMES GRAPHICS
CAN CONVEY THE MESSAGE
MORE EFFECTIVELY
THAN WORDS,
OR CAN BE USED
ALONGSIDE THOSE WORDS.
SYMBOLS AND PICTURES ARE
POWERFUL WAYS TO COMMUNICATE.
THROUGHOUT THE WORLD
AND THROUGH TIME,
DIFFERENT CULTURES HAVE
USED SYMBOLS AND PICTURES
TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES.
IN THIS EPISODE
OF THE WACKY WORD SHOW,
ZOEY AND LUKAS
EXPLORE THE MANY WAYS
THAT WE CAN COMMUNICATE
WITH PICTURES, SYMBOLS,
AND PICTOGRAMS,
JUST LIKE THE ANCIENT EGYPTIANS.
A GRAPHIC DESIGNER
ALSO DROPS BY
TO SHOW HOW A SIMPLE IMAGE CAN
CONVEY A MESSAGE OR IDEA.”
Female singers sing, “IT'S THE WACKY
WACKY WORD SHOW
THE WACKY
WACKY WORD SHOW
THE WACKY WORD SHOW
SO WACKY!”
Zoey says, “IT'S ME, ZOEY.”
Lukas adds, “I'M LUKAS!
WE PLAY WITH WORDS.”
Zoey and Lukas sing,
”HAVE LOTS OF FUN!
ON THE
WACKY WORD SHOW,
FUN IS NUMBER ONE!”
Zoey sings,
“NOW WE LOVE
BOOKS AND STORIES.”
Lukas sings,
“MAKE STUFF UP,
THAT'S WHAT WE DO!”
Zoey sings,
“DID WE MENTION
ACTING WACKY?”
Zoey and Lukas sing,
“YEAH, WE DO THAT TOO!
WE'VE GOT TONS OF GUESTS
AND BOOBOO BOT--
GAMES AND JOKES WITH YOU!
IT'S THE WACKY
WACKY WORD SHOW
THE WACKY
WACKY WORD SHOW
THE WACKY WORD SHOW
HERE WE GO!
THE WACKY WORD SHOW
SO WACKY!”
Sunshine lights up a bedroom.
Zoey wears an Egyptian headdress
As she types on a laptop.
Text on her phone screen reads,
“Lukas, no new messages”
Zoey shrugs. She puts down her phone
And walks away from the laptop.
Zoey says, “HEY GUYS!
AND WELCOME TO OUR--
I MEAN, MY--
LUKAS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE HERE
FOR OUR SHOW INTRO,
BUT I GUESS HE WAS JUST…”
A rolled-up piece of paper lays on a desk.
Zoey asks, “WHAT'S THIS?
Zoey unrolls the paper.
She says, “HMM, IS THIS SUPPOSED
TO TELL ME WHERE HE IS?
NEVER A DULL MOMENT WITH LUKAS,
I'M AFRAID--”
[[Shouting]
Zoey exclaims, “WHOA!”
Zoey screams
Lukas is dressed as a mummy
[Shrieking]
Lukas waves his arms as he approaches
Zoey.
[Laughing]
The Egyptian pyramids are pictured.
Zoey says,
“WELCOME TO OUR SHOW,
COMING TO YOU STRAIGHT FROM
ANCIENT EGYPT.”
Lukas adds, “THAT'S RIGHT.
I READ A BOOK ABOUT
HIEROGLYPHICS IN SCHOOL.
IT'S A KIND OF WRITING FROM
ANCIENT EGYPT
THAT USES PICTURES AND SYMBOLS.
SO I THOUGHT I'D TRY
WRITING MY OWN.”
Zoey asks, “THAT'S WHAT THIS IS?”
Lukas replies, “HUH, LET ME SEE
IF I CAN FIGURE THIS OUT.”
THAT'S A MOM…”
Zoey adds, “BUT THERE'S TWO OF THEM, SO...
MOMMIES?”
Lukas says, “MUMMIES, LIKE ME.”
Zoey responds, “OKAY. AND THEN THAT'S
A LITTLE R,
SO "MUMMIES ARE?”
Lukas agrees, “YEP.”
Zoey goes on, “MUMMIES ARE... EMOJI WITH AN S
AND A CAPE?”
[Gasping]
Zoey exclaims, “SUPER!
"MUMMIES ARE SUPER!"
Lukas agrees, “UH-HUH.”
An ice cube picture appears.
Zoey guesses,
“MUMMIES ARE SUPER COLD?”
Lukas says, “ALMOST.”
Zoey continues, “SUPER…”
[Gasping]
Zoey says, “MUMMIES ARE
SUPER COOL!”
Zoey and Lukas high five.
Zoey says, “WE HAVE THE BEST SHOW TODAY.
IT'S ALL ABOUT HOW WE SAY THINGS
WITH PICTURES,
SIGNS, OR SYMBOLS.”
Lukas says, “JUST LIKE THE
ANCIENT EGYPTIANS DID,
LIKE 5,000 YEARS AGO!”
Zoey adds, “YOU KNOW, YOU LOOK JUST LIKE
THIS EMOJI.”
A mummy emoji appears on Zoey’s phone.
[Laughing]
Zoey exclaims, “THIS SHOW IS STUFFED WITH
MORE TREASURES
THAN AN EGYPTIAN TOMB.
LET'S GO!”
Zoey and Lukas leave the bedroom.
They point out their fingers as they swing
their arms up.
A curly-haired girl with red glasses says,
“WHAT'S A MUMMY'S FAVOURITE TYPE
OF MUSIC?
RAP.”
[Laughing]
The curly-haired girl with red glasses
continues, “GET IT? 'CAUSE, LIKE,
MUMMIES ARE WRAPPED IN, LIKE,
TOILET PAPER.”
Multiple mummy emojis appear.
Cartoon versions of Zoey and Lukas appear
on a theatre curtain.
The sun shines brightly on the Sphinx in Egypt.
Zoey is dress like Cleopatra. She brushes
her hair.
Lukas asks, “ARE YOU NEARLY READY?”
Zoey replies, “BE THERE IN A MINUTE.
JUST GOTTA CHECK MY MESSAGES.”
Zoey puts on a gold headband. She smiles.
Hieroglyphs cover a wall.
Zoey says, “SEEN THAT ONE. SEEN THAT ONE.”
[Gasping]
Zoey exclaims, “OOH! WHAT'S THIS?
STOP READING MESSAGES?
WHAT?
SOMETIMES THIS IS THE ONLY WAY
I CAN COMMUNICATE WITH YOU.”
Lukas wears a Roman soldier’s uniform
[Laughing]
Lukas says, “COME ON.”
Zoey asks, “OH! OH! WHAT'S THAT?”
Zoey mouths the words of a message.
Lukas rolls his eyes.
[Laughing]
Lukas says, “I GIVE UP.”
Lukas sits at the laptop in the bedroom.
He says, “I'VE BEEN PROGRAMMING BOOBOO BOT
TO BE A SUPER HIEROGLYPHIC
DECODER.
TAH-DAH!”
BooBoo bot wears the Egyptian headdress.
BooBoo bot says, “BOOBOO BOT READY TO DECODE.”
Lukas says, “CHECK THIS OUT.”
Three images appear on the laptop.
A boy smiling, building blocks, and a pyramid.
BooBoo bot says, “LUKAS PLAYS THE TRIANGLE.”
Lukas replies, “OKAY. JUST A LITTLE GLITCH.
IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE
"LUKAS BUILDS PYRAMIDS."
I'LL JUST FIX THAT AND TRY
ANOTHER.”
An eye, a smile, and a cat appear on the screen.
BooBoo boy speaks, “I EAT CATS.”
Lukas speaks, “NO, BOOBOO BOT! WE LIKE CATS!
THEY'RE FRIENDS, NOT FOOD.”
Scared eyes and a mummy appear on the screen.
Lukas claims, “THERE'S NO WAY YOU CAN
MESS THIS UP.
IT'S "LOOK OUT FOR THE MUMMY."
BooBoo bot replies, “I WANT MY MOMMY”.
[Laughing]
Zoey says, “I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE APART
FROM ANCIENT EGYPTIANS
USED SYMBOLS IN THEIR LANGUAGE,
AND IT TURNS OUT LOTS DO.”
Zoey looks at the laptop.
She says,
“LIKE THE CHINESE AND JAPANESE.
DID YOU KNOW THE CHINESE
LANGUAGE
HAS OVER 50,000 CHARACTERS?
UNLIKE HIEROGLYPHS,
THESE LANGUAGES DON'T USE
DRAWINGS OF PEOPLE, ANIMALS,
OR OBJECTS,
BUT SYMBOLS INSTEAD.
SO TO THE CHINESE,
THIS MEANS FLOWER,
AND THIS MEANS DRAGON.”
Zoey paints Chinese symbols on a page
in a notepad.
Zoey continues, “I'VE BEEN TRYING
TO DRAW SOME MYSELF.
IT'S NOT THAT EASY.
OOH.”
Zoey draws a straight line.
Zoey says, “PERFECT! THAT ONE MEANS "ONE."
WELL, NOW THAT I'VE DONE THREE,
I JUST HAVE A COUPLE MORE
THOUSAND TO GO.
NO BIGGIE.”
Hundreds of Chinese symbols appear.
Lukas says, “WANT TO MEET SOMEONE WHO
KNOWS ALL ABOUT
HOW TO SAY THINGS WITH PICTURES?”
Zoey and Lukas sing,
“HE COMMUNICATES LIKE
AN ANCIENT EGYPTIAN
WITH LOGOS, SIGNS,
AND SYMBOLS OF ALL DESCRIPTION
WELCOME, CHRIS SWEET
INTO TO OUR MUMMY
CRYPT--SHUN”
A small dog leads Chris into the bedroom.
Lukas says, “AWW, NICE DOG!”
Zoey adds, “HE'S SO CUTE.”
Chris says, “HEY, GUYS! HOW YOU DOING?”
Zoey and Lukas say together, “HI, CHRIS!”
Chris says, “I SEE YOU'VE GOT SOME
HIEROGLYPHIC THING
GOING ON HERE.”
Zoey replies, “YEAH! DO YOU LIKE IT?”
Chris answers, “I LOVE IT, I THINK IT'S REALLY
COOL, ACTUALLY.
DO YOU GUYS WANT TO SEE
WHAT I BROUGHT TODAY?”
Lukas and Zoey say, “YEAH”
Chris responds, “CHECK THIS OUT”
Chris holds a graphic of a chef.
Lukas exclaims, “WHOA!”
Zoey asks, “WHAT IS IT?”
Chris answers, “THAT'S BURGER MAN,
HIEROGLYPHIC-STYLE.”
[Kids giggling]
Lukas says, “OH, AND THAT'S YOU!
AND YOUR DOG, BOWSER!
YOU DRAW REALLY WELL.”
Chris sits with Zoey and Lukas at the desk.
Zoey asks, “SO WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR JOB
AS A DESIGNER?
Chris replies, “WELL, MY JOB AS A DESIGNER
IS TO SAY THINGS
WITHOUT, WELL, SAYING THEM.
LET ME EXPLAIN.
DRAWING IS MORE LIKE SAYING
THINGS WITH PICTURES.
CHECK THIS ONE OUT.”
Zoey says, “TWO PEOPLE. TWO PEOPLE
AND A HEART.”
Chris asks, “SO WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE WHEN
YOU SEE THIS LOGO?”
Zoey responds, “SWEET, KIND OF.”
Lukas adds, “HAPPY?”
Chris explains, “HAPPY, LOVING, AND HELPFUL.”
Zoey asks, “WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
A LOGO AND OTHER SIGNS?”
Chris answers, “A LOGO IS A KIND OF SYMBOL
THAT COMPANIES USE
TO REPRESENT THEMSELVES.
AND PICTOGRAMS CAN BE FOR
ANYTHING OUT THERE.
IF WE TAKE A LOOK AT
THIS DESIGN HERE,
YOU CAN SEE THAT THERE'S
A LOT OF PICTOGRAMS.
IT'S LIKE A SIMPLE DRAWING OF
SOMETHING THAT EXISTS
IN REAL LIFE, LIKE AN OBJECT.
HERE IS THE CN TOWER IN TORONTO.
AND YOU HAVE AN RCMP POLICE
OFFICER RIGHT THERE.
A LOBSTER FOR THE EAST COAST
OF CANADA.
AND YOU EVEN HAVE
PARLIAMENT HILL.”
Zoey says, “WOW, THAT'S COOL.”
Chris adds, “NOW IT'S YOUR TURN TO DRAW
ANCIENT EGYPT
USING ONLY THREE OR FOUR
PICTOGRAMS.
AND YOU SHOULD HAVE ENOUGH
INSPIRATION
WITH ALL THE THINGS HERE.”
Lukas says, “YEAH”
Lukas and Zoey begin to design pictograms
On a yellow notepad. Zoey looks deep in thought.
Chris says, “REMEMBER, KEEP IT VERY SIMPLE.
THAT'S WHAT A PICTOGRAM
IS ALL ABOUT.
LOOKS LIKE A REAL HIEROGLYPHIC
THERE, LUKAS.”
Lukas replies, “THANKS.”
Chris counts down, “FIVE, FOUR, THREE, TWO…”
[Imitating Buzzer noise]
Chis says, “SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT.
WOW!
I SEE HERE YOU HAVE A LOT
OF BRICKS JUST LIKE A PYRAMID.
YOU GOT THE BRICKS,
YOU GOT THE SIMPLE SHAPE,
AND THAT'S WHAT A PICTOGRAM
IS ALL ABOUT.
SIMPLICITY.
THAT GUY IS JAMMING.
SUPER COOL!”
Zoey and Lukas dance.
Chris adds, “YOU GUYS GOT DANCE MOVES TOO!”
Lukas says, “OH YEAH.”
Chris continues, “AND THE LAST ONE HERE
IS A SARCOPHAGUS.”
Zoey replies, “YEP”
Chris says, “WOW”
Zoey asks, “YOU KNOW WHO IS IN THERE?
Chris says, “NO.”
Zoey replies, “LUKAS, THAT'S WHY HE'S SO HAPPY.”
Chris exclaims, “I KNEW IT!”
Lukas says, “MINDS BLOWN!”
Chris continues, “CHECK OUT THESE PICTOGRAMS.
MOST COUNTRIES USE PICTURE-BASED
SIGNS FOR IMPORTANT THINGS.
SO IF YOU HAVE TO GO TO THE
BATHROOM,
YOU'RE JUST GONNA LOOK FOR THE
BATHROOM SIGN.
IF YOU NEED WI-FI TO CONNECT TO
THE INTERNET,
YOU'RE GONNA FIND THE WI-FI
SIGN.”
Lukas asks, “SO PICTOGRAMS ARE PICTURES
THAT STAND IN FOR WORDS,
KIND OF LIKE A UNIVERSAL
LANGUAGE.”
Chris answers, “THAT'S RIGHT, LUKAS.
COULDN'T HAVE SAID IT BETTER
MYSELF.”
Zoey says, “WELL, THANKS FOR COMING OVER,
CHRIS.
IT WAS REALLY FUN.”
Chris responds, “YOU'RE WELCOME.
IT WAS MY PLEASURE.”
A dark-haired girl in a gray t-shirt asks,
“WHAT DO YOU CALL THREE KITTENS
STACKED ON TOP OF EACH OTHER?”
A girl with dark blonde hair replies,
“A TRIO OF KITTENS?”
The dark-haired girl in the gray t-shirt says,
“A PURR-AMID.”
[Laughing]
A girl with dark blonde hair repeats, “
A "PURR-AMID?"
[Imitating purring]
A graphic with Zoey and Lukas reads, "Game Show”
A theme song pays, “GAME SHOW! GAME SHOW!
GAME SHOW! GAME SHOW!”
Lukas exclaims, “HELLO, AND WELCOME TO
PICK YOUR GRAM!
THE GAME SHOW
WHERE WE HUNT DOWN TREASURES
AS VALUABLE AS A PHARAOH'S
RICHES.
PICTOGRAMS!
ON THE HUNT TODAY ARE CATHY
AND CHARLOTTE
ON TEAM TOMB RAIDER!”
Cathy and Charlotte sing, “C'EST LA BANANA,
C'EST LA BANANA”
Lukas continues, “AND WE HAVE KIARA AND MIA
ON TEAM GOLD GRABBERS!”
[Beat boxing]
Lukas says, “YOU'LL BOTH GET A BIG CARD WITH
SOME PICTOGRAMS ON IT.
I'LL GIVE YOU A CATEGORY,
AND 30 SECONDS TO CIRCLE
ALL THE PICTOGRAMS
THAT FIT THAT CATEGORY.
THE MORE YOU FIND,
THE MORE POINTS YOU SCORE.
BUT CHOOSE CAREFULLY,
BECAUSE FOR EVERY PICTOGRAM
YOU CIRCLE
THAT DOES NOT FIT THE CATEGORY,
YOU LOSE A POINT!”
Kiara and Mia say, “OH NO!”
Lukas goes on, “THE FIRST CATEGORY IS...
PICTOGRAMS YOU MIGHT FIND
IN A PUBLIC SPACE
LIKE A MALL OR AN AIRPORT.
THREE, TWO, ONE. GO!”
Team tomb raider discusses the pictograms.
Charlotte says, “THIS ONE.
YEAH.”
A bathroom symbol is circled.
Charlotte says, “THESE TWO.
UM, PARKING.”
Cathy agrees, “YEAH, PARKING.”
Charlotte adds, “NO DOGS.”
Cathy responds, “NO DOGS,
THAT'S A GOOD ONE.”
Lukas exclaims,
“WOW, THERE'S SOME SERIOUS
CIRCLING GOING ON OVER HERE.
NOT SO MUCH OVER THERE THOUGH.”
Mia says,
“YEAH, THE BATHROOM SIGN.
OH, HERE.”
Lukas says, “KEEP GOING, GUYS!
TIME IS RUNNING OUT.”
[Groaning]
Cathy says, “I'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE.”
Charlotte replies, “NO, NOT IN A PUBLIC SPACE.”
Kiara exclaims, “OH, HERE!”
Mia adds, “HERE.”
Lukas says, “10 SECONDS LEFT, GUYS!”
Mia says, “OKAY.”
Kiara asks, “WHAT IS THIS?”
Mia responds, “YOU ALSO FIND THIS.”
Kiara agrees, “OH, YEAH.”
Lucas says, “TIME'S UP, GUYS.
MARKERS DOWN.
LET'S SEE HOW YOU DID.
HMM, THE WHEELCHAIR PICTOGRAM.
THAT'S ONE POINT.
THE ELEVATOR IS CORRECT.
AND SO IS THE BATHROOM SIGN.
THE TRASH CAN IS ALSO CORRECT.
ALL RIGHT, TEAM TOMB RAIDER,
LET'S SEE HOW YOU DID.
THAT ONE'S CORRECT.
THE RECYCLING PICTOGRAM,
CORRECT!
THERE ARE RECYCLING BINS IN
PUBLIC SPACES.
OOH, THAT ONE'S INCORRECT.
YOU WON'T FIND A SCHOOL CROSSING
SIGN IN A MALL OR AN AIRPORT.
THAT'S RIGHT.
THAT ONE'S CORRECT.
NO DOGS ALLOWED.
TEAM GOLD GRABBERS,
YOU GOT FOUR CORRECT PICTOGRAMS.
TEAM TOMB RAIDER, YOU ALSO GOT
FOUR CORRECT PICTOGRAMS.
BUT ONE WRONG,
SO YOU LOSE A POINT.
THE SCORE IS FOUR TO THREE.”
Lukas continues, “ONTO THE NEXT CATEGORY.
THESE ARE PICTOGRAMS
YOU MIGHT SEE ON THE ROAD.
GO!”
Kiara says, “OKAY, OKAY. SO...
YOU SEE THIS OUTSIDE TOO.”
Mia asks, “REALLY?”
Kiara replies, “LIKE, IN THE GARBAGE AREAS.
WHATEVER.”
Charlotte says, “YEAH, THAT'S ONE.
AND ALSO THIS.”
Charlotte adds, “AND THIS ONE.
AND THIS ONE.”
Lukas checks team Tomb Raiders answers.
[Mumbling]
Cathy says, “THIS. YEAH.”
Kiara says, “YOU SEE THIS OUTSIDE TOO.
LIKE IN THE... HERE.”
Mia asks, “THIS ONE?”
Kiara replies, “YEAH, I SEE THAT.”
Mia says, “UM, HERE.”
Kiara adds, “LOOK, HERE.”
Lukas exclaims, “THREE SECONDS, GUYS!
TIME'S UP. MARKERS DOWN.”
Lukas says, “TEAM TOMB RAIDER,
LET'S SEE WHAT YOU GOT.
FASTEN YOUR SEATBELT. CORRECT.
DO NOT ENTER. THAT'S ALSO RIGHT!
THE STOP HAND SIGN IS CORRECT.
AND SO IS THE ONE WAY
STREET SIGN.
ALL RIGHT.
ONTO TEAM GOLD GRABBERS!
THE TWO WAY STREET SIGN
IS CORRECT.
THIS ONE'S NOT RIGHT, THOUGH.
THE SYMBOL FOR RECYCLING
IS NOT A ROAD SIDE.
THIS ONE'S CORRECT, TOO.
SO IS SCHOOL CROSSING,
STREET CROSSING,
AND DO NOT ENTER.
AND FINALLY, THE ONE WAY STREET
IS CORRECT.
TEAM TOMB RAIDER, ALL FOUR OF
YOUR PICTOGRAM GUESSES
WERE RIGHT THAT ROUND
FOR A TOTAL OF FOUR POINTS.
YOUR GRAND TOTAL IS...
SEVEN POINTS!”
[Applauding]
Cathy and Charlotte sing, “C'EST LA BANANA”
Lukas continues, “AND TEAM GOLD GRABBERS,
YOU GOT SIX PICTOGRAMS RIGHT
THAT ROUND,
BUT ONE WAS WRONG,
SO YOU LOSE A POINT.
THE GRAND TOTAL FOR TEAM GOLD
GRABBERS IS...
NINE POINTS!
YOU ARE THE WINNERS!
THANKS FOR PLAYING
PICK YOUR GRAM!”
[Applauding]
A dark-haired girl in a purple shirt asks,
“WHY DIDN'T THE SKELETON
CROSS THE ROAD
'CAUSE HE DIDN'T HAVE THE GUTS!”
[Groaning]
[Laughter]
A girl in a yellow shirt says,
“WELL, OBVIOUSLY NOT.
HE'S A SKELETON.”
Heavy drum music plays, Zoey stands in
a graffiti-filled alley.
Zoey sings, “EGYPTIANS OF OLD
KNEW WHERE IT WAS AT
TO BEST TELL THE TALE
OF A CAMEL OR A CAT
'CAUSE COMMUNICATION
CAN BE ROUNDABOUT
WE NEED TO STOP RUNNING
AND FIGURE IT OUT
IF WE DON'T WANNA GET STUCK
IN A POOP
OR HAVE OUR MESSAGE
GO ROUND IN A LOOP
SLIDE OUR WORDS
INTO A SINGLE PICTURE
AND OUR STORY MIGHT JUST
GET A LITTLE RICHER
YEAH, OUR STORY MIGHT JUST
GET A LITTLE RICHER
SO IF YOU WANT YOUR MESSAGE
TO BE TOTALLY LIT
YOU'VE GOTTA USE A PICTOGRAM
TO SAY IT
WHY DON'T YOU USE
A PICTOGRAM
TO SAY IT?”
Zoey says, “GIVE IT A TRY.”
A zookeeper says, “COME TO THE PICTOGRAM ZOO,
WHERE THE ANIMALS ARE SO
LIFE-LIKE,
YOU'LL FORGET THEY AREN'T REAL!
WE'VE GOT A CAMEL FROM THE
DESERT IN EGYPT.
A KANGAROO FROM THE HIGHWAYS
OF AUSTRALIA.
A POLAR BEAR FROM WAY UP
IN MANITOBA.
ALLIGATORS FROM THE SWAMPS
OF LOUISIANA.
AND A PENGUIN THAT'S WADDLED ALL
THE WAY HERE FROM ANTARCTICA!
BUT NO VISIT TO THE PICTOGRAM
ZOO IS COMPLETE
WITHOUT A SIGHTING OF...
THE CUTEST LINE OF DUCKLINGS
FOREVER WAITING
TO CROSS THE ROAD.
GET IN REAL CLOSE FOR PHOTOS,
FOLKS!
'CAUSE THESE ANIMALS DON'T BITE.”
The zookeeper whispers, “THAT'S BECAUSE THEY
AREN'T REAL.”
The zookeeper continues, “IT'S FUN FOR THE WHOLE
FAMILY AT THE PICTOGRAM ZOO!
THE CUTEST AND SAFEST
SAFARI AROUND!
UH…”
A black bear turns to the zookeeper.
[Growling]
The zookeeper runs away from the black bear.
[Screaming]
The black bear walks away from the zookeeper.
Zoey sits in front of the laptop.
She says, “I WAS WONDERING IF EMOJIS
ARE PICTOGRAMS,
AND IT TURNS OUT, THEY ARE!
'CAUSE THEY CAN ALSO STAND IN
FOR WORDS.
EMOJIS WERE INVENTED IN JAPAN.
THE COOL THING IS,
THE WORD "EMOJI"
IS A COMBINATION
OF TWO JAPANESE WORDS,
E, WHICH MEANS PICTURE,
AND MOJI, WHICH MEANS CHARACTER.
EMOJI. PICTURE, CHARACTER.
BECAUSE THEY'RE PICTOGRAMS,
I CAN USE THEM INSTEAD OF WORDS.
LIKE IF I WANTED TO SAY
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY,"
OR EVEN SEND SOME LOVE ALL THE
WAY FROM ANCIENT EGYPT.
AS WELL AS REPLACING WORDS,
EMOJIS HELP WITH THEIR MEANING.
SO IF I PUT THIS AT THE END
OF A SENTENCE,
YOU'D KNOW I WAS JOKING. COOL!
WHOOPS, I MEAN--”
Zoey pulls up an emoji with sunglasses.
[Giggling]
Zoey exclaims, “IT'S THE WACKY CHALLENGE!
WITH YOUR HOSTS ZOEY…”
Lukas interrupts, “AND LUKAS!”
Zoey says, “WELCOME TO TODAY'S ANCIENT
EGYPTIAN CHALLENGE!”
Lukas adds, “THANKS, CLEOPATRA
LET'S MEET OUR CHALLENGERS.”
Zoey says, “WE HAVE ADRIANNA AND MILA
ON TEAM MUMMY MAYHEM.”
Adrianna and Mila wear mummy costumes.
Zoey continues, “…AND JONAH AND RAFAEL
ON TEAM TOMB TRAVELLER.”
Jonah and Raphael wear fedoras.
Zoey says, “YOUR MISSION IS TO DIG UP
THE EMOJIS HIDDEN
IN EACH ANCIENT ARTIFACT.
YOU HAVE TO FIGURE OUT
WHAT SENTENCE
THE EMOJIS ARE SAYING.
IF YOU DON'T SOLVE THE CLUES
BEFORE TIME'S UP,
YOU WILL BE ENTOMBED
IN THE PYRAMID FOR ETERNITY!”
[Shrieking]
Mila says, “EH, WHO CARES?”
Lukas says, “JUST JOKING.”
[Laughter]
Zoey continues, “TEAM TOMB
TRAVELLER, EXPLORE!”
Team tomb traveler searches through a
room filled with ancient Egyptian artifacts.
Jonah says, “HMM. OH, THERE'S THE SCROLL.
SNAKE.”
Jonah and Rafael say together,
“SNAKE, PRESENT, FOUR.”
Jonah says, “SO IT MUST BE FOR,
LIKE "F-O-R."
SNAKE PRESENT...
SNAKE GIFT.”
Rafael adds, “OH, FROM PHARAOH.
IN HIS PARTY.”
Jonah asks, “WHAT COULD IT BE?
SERPENT PARTY?
MAYBE WE CAN LOOK AT IT LATER.
LET'S FIND THE OTHER ONES, OKAY?”
Rafael nods.
Lukas exclaims, “OH, TEAM TOMB TRAVELLER
IS DECIDING TO MOVE ON
TO THE NEXT SCROLL!”
Jonah says, “OH, I FOUND ONE.
LOOK AT THAT ONE,
LET'S SEE IF IT'S EASIER.”
Raphael says, “WELL, A BOTTLE.
THAT'S A CAN,
OR BOTTLE.”
Jonah says, “A BOTTLE, MUMMY, TRAIN, CAT,
TWO, MOSQUITO?
TWO BUG.”
Rafael looks unsure.
Jonah continues, “MUMMY TRAIN CAT.
CAN MUMMY TRAIN CAT TO FLY?”
Lukas says, “YES! GREAT SPEED FIGURING OUT
THAT SENTENCE!”
Jonah says, “ALL RIGHT, I WONDER WHERE
THE LAST ONE COULD BE.
MAYBE HERE”
Zoey says, “TEAM TOMB TRAVELLER
MAKING GREAT TIME.”
Jonah says, “OH, IT'S RIGHT THERE!”
Zoey adds, “IF THEY SOLVE THIS LAST ONE
FAST ENOUGH,
THEY'LL HAVE TIME TO GO BACK TO
THE ONE THEY SKIPPED.”
Raphael says, “THAT'S ALIEN, THAT'S A HEART.”
Jonah adds, “THAT'S A PYRAMID, I THINK.
YEAH, THOSE ARE PYRAMIDS.
SO... ALIENS LOVE PYRAMIDS?”
Lukas says, “YES, THAT'S IT!
YOU STILL HAVE
A FEW SECONDS LEFT.”
Jonah says, “LET'S TRY THIS ONE AGAIN.
SO SNAKE, PRESENT.
BRING-- IT'S LIKE,
BRING A PRESENT FOR PHARAOH
AT THE PARTY? LIKE, NO.”
Rafael adds, “OHHH, BRING A SNAKE
TO PHARAOH?”
Jonah continues, “BRING A SNAKE AS A PRESENT
FOR PHARAOH'S BIRTHDAY PARTY.
YEAH.”
Zoey exclaims, “THAT'S IT!
YOU FIGURED IT OUT!”
Raphael and Jonah cheer, “YEAH!”
Lukas says, “NOW ONTO TEAM MUMMY MAYHEM.”
Adrianna and Mila search the room.
Mila says, “HERE.”
Mila finds a scroll.
Arianna replies, “WHOA.
EYE...TALK... I TALK?”
Mila adds, “IT COULD BE BLOW.”
Adrianna continues, “I BLOW TRUMPET
TO TELEPHONE.
SLEEP, MUMMY.”
Mila adds, “MAYBE IT COULD BE
"I BLOW A TRUMPET TO CALL
"A SLEEPING MUMMY?"
Adrianna agrees, “YEAH”.
Zoey exclaims, “EXACTLY!”
Arianna says, “GOOD JOB.”
Zoey adds, “GO AHEAD, GUYS.
YOUR NEXT MESSAGE AWAITS.”
Adrianna says, “OH, THERE.
OH, FOUND IT”
Mila says, “OKAY.”
Adrianna says, “EGYPTIANS DANCE TO MUSIC
AT NIGHT?”
Zoey exclaims, “GREAT JOB! INCREDIBLE SPEED
ON THAT ONE.”
Lukas adds, “TEAM MUMMY MAYHEM
NOW GOING FOR THE LAST CLUE.
WHOA, LOOKS LIKE THEY FOUND IT!”
Zoey responds, “IF THEY SOLVE THIS CLUE
IN LESS THAN 30 SECONDS,
THEY'LL WIN!”
Adrianna says, “SO THAT'S A CAMEL.
OR A LLAMA.”
Mila agrees, “YEAH.”
Adrianna guesses, “SO CAMELS, GOOD,
PALM TREE?”
Zoey says, “CLOSE!
BUT THAT'S NOT IT.
KEEP TRYING.”
Lukas says, “YOU'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME!”
Adrianna says, “MAYBE IT HAS TO DO WITH
THE TWO BUMPS.”
Mila responds, “OH YEAH.”
Lukas says, “THIS ONE'S TOUGH.
THEY'RE STUCK!”
Adrianna guesses, “CAMEL, GOOD, PALM TREE.”
Zoey says, “TIME'S UP!
THOSE EMOJIS MEAN
"CAMELS LIKE PALM TREES."
THUMBS UP IS A LIKE.
BEFORE WE GET TO THE RESULTS,
LET'S TRY SOMETHING.
EXPLORERS AND MUMMIES, UNITE!
WRITE A SENTENCE TOGETHER
USING EMOJIS!”
Lukas says, “STRANGE IDEA, ZOEY.
MUMMIES AND EXPLORERS
WORKING TOGETHER?
BUT I LIKE IT.”
Zoey continues, “HERE IS THE SENTENCE.
"CLEOPATRA LIKES
STRAWBERRY MILKSHAKES."
Raphael states, “ALL RIGHT, WE NEED CLEOPATRA.
YEAH, THAT LOOKS LIKE HER.”
Jonah adds, “LIKES, MAYBE WE'LL TRY
THE THUMBS UP.
IS THERE A STRAWBERRY?
THAT'S A GLASS OF MILK,
THAT'S FOR SURE.”
Mila responds, “MILK, YEAH.
AND SHAKES…”
The Mummies and Explores say together,
“CLEOPATRA LIKES
STRAWBERRY MILKSHAKES.”
The Mummies and Explores high five.
Zoey says, “YES, I DO LIKE STRAWBERRY
MILKSHAKES.”
[Laughing]
Lukas exclaims, “AND NOW FOR THE RESULTS!
TEAM MUMMY MAYHEM,
YOU GOT TWO POINTS!”
Zoey adds, “AND TEAM TOMB TRAVELLER,
YOU GOT...
THREE POINTS!
YOU WIN!”
[Cheering]
[Growling]
The tomb Travelers run away
from team Mummy Mayhem. Team
Mummy Mayhem chase them.
Lukas says, “UH-OH, I HAD A FEELING
MUMMIES AND EXPLORERS
COULDN'T WORK TOGETHER.”
[Laughing]
Lukas and Zoey’s cartoon faces
cover a theatre curtain.
Zoey wears the Cleopatra costume.
Cleopatra says, “JUST OFF TO THE STORE.
BE BACK SOON!
HMM, WHAT'S THIS?
"DON'T FORGET SNAKE."
SNAKE?
HMM. I WONDER WHAT MARK ANTONY
NEEDS A SNAKE FOR.”
Mark Antony says,
“I SHOULD REALLY FINISH WRITING
THAT MESSAGE TO CLEOPATRA.
[Chisel clanking]
Mark Antony says, “THAT'S BETTER.
NOW SHE WON'T FORGET
MY NECKLACE.”
Text reads, “Four hours later”
Cleopatra says, “HELLO, I'M HOME!
AND I DIDN'T FORGET WHAT YOU
ASKED ME TO PICK UP.”
Mark Antony replies,
“OH GOODY! I CAN'T WAIT TO--”
[Hissing and screaming]
Mark Antony falls to the floor.
He lies unconscious.
[Sighing]
Cleopatra says,
“THAT'S THE LAST TIME
I RUN ERRANDS FOR YOU.
AM I RIGHT?”
Lukas jokes, “DID YOU HEAR ABOUT
THE ANGRY MUMMY?
HE FLIPPED HIS LID.”
Lukas looks confused.
He says, “WEIRD, IT'S TIME
FOR OUR CLOSING SONG
AND I DON'T SEE ZOEY.
BETTER START WITHOUT HER.”
Lukas picks up a ukulele.
Lukas sings, “SO THAT'S OUR SHOW
IT'S TIME TO-- “
Zoey bursts out of a sarcophagus wearing
A mummy costume.
[Shouting and screaming]
Zoey says, “GOT YA!”
She adds, “MAY I?”
Lukas gives Zoey the ukulele.
Lukas and Zoey sing, “WITH SIGNS AND SYMBOLS
THAT TELL US A LOT
AND ARE UNDERSTOOD BETTER
THAN BOOBOO BOT”
[Beeping]
Zoey says, “ONLY JOKING!”
Lukas and Zoey sing,
“AND NOW OUR SHOW IS DONE”
Lukas and Zoey take a bow.
BooBoo bot says, “BOOBOO BOT LOVES MUMMY”
[Laughing]
Zoey sings, “IF WE DON'T WANNA GET
STUCK IN A POOP
OR HAVE OUR MESSAGE
GO ROUND IN A LOOP
SLIDE OUR WORDS
INTO A SINGLE PICTURE
AND OUR STORY MIGHT JUST
GET A LITTLE RICHER
YEAH, OUR STORY MIGHT
JUST GET A LITTLE RICHER
SO IF YOU WANT YOUR MESSAGE
TO BE TOTALLY LIT
YOU'VE GOTTA USE A PICTOGRAM
TO SAY IT”
Zoey says, “GIVE IT A TRY!”
Credits read, “Apartment 11 productions”
Arianna continues, “LUKAS AND ZOEY REALLY HELPED US
TO SEE THE POWER OF IMAGES.
ALL OVER THE WORLD WE USE
PICTURES AND SYMBOLS
TO COMMUNICATE
IMPORTANT MESSAGES
AND HELP READERS
TO UNDERSTAND.
WHILE WATCHING, WE SAW
THAT ADRIANA, MILA,
JONAH, AND RAPHAEL
SOLVED THE EMOJI PUZZLES
BY PUTTING THE SYMBOLS TOGETHER
SIDE BY SIDE.
IN GRAPHIC TEXTS,
WE OFTEN FIND DIFFERENT FEATURES
THAT HELP US TO BE ABLE
TO SUPPORT OUR UNDERSTANDING.”
Arianna adds, “SOMETIMES CREATORS
OF GRAPHIC TEXTS
USE TITLES,
CAPTIONS, LABELS,
COLUMN AND ROW HEADINGS,
LEGENDS, A SCALE,
EVEN UNITS OF MEASUREMENT.
DEPENDING ON
THE GRAPHIC TEXT,
MANY OF THESE FEATURES CAN BE
USED IN COMBINATION.
LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT A FEW
EXAMPLES OF SOME GRAPHIC TEXT
TO SEE IF YOU CAN
GET A SENSE
OF WHAT THE MESSAGE THAT
THE WRITER IS TRYING TO CONVEY.”
Arianna looks at her computer screen.
She says, “HERE'S THIS FIRST ONE.
IT'S ONE THAT I'VE SEEN
ON THE STREETS MANY TIMES.
WE NOTICE THAT IT'S
A POST OF SOME SORT,
AND IT LOOKS LIKE
IT'S HIGH OFF THE GROUND.
HAVE YOU SEEN
THIS IMAGE BEFORE?
IT HAS A P IN THE MIDDLE,
AND A RED CIRCLE AROUND IT
WITH A DIAGONAL LINE
THROUGH THE MIDDLE.
WHEN I'VE SEEN SYMBOLS
WITH THIS RED CIRCLE AND
A DIAGONAL LINE THROUGH IT,
I KNOW THAT IT MEANS
THAT YOU CAN'T DO SOMETHING.
IN THIS CASE,
THERE'S NO PARKING AT ANY TIME
ALONG THIS STREET
BECAUSE OF THE DOUBLE ARROWS
THAT ARE THERE.
LET'S LOOK
AT ANOTHER GRAPHIC.
THIS LOOKS LIKE A DIAGRAM
OF THE HUMAN BODY.
IT SHOWS
A VARIETY OF ORGANS
THAT MAKE UP
THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM.
SOMETIMES WHEN WE VIEW
DIAGRAMS LIKE THIS,
IT HELPS US TO MAKE SENSE
OF WHAT'S HAPPENING
INSIDE OUR BODIES.
HERE WE GET TO SEE
WHERE THE FOOD GOES IN
AND WHERE IT EVENTUALLY
COMES OUT.”
Arianna adds,
“NOW, THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE
TYPES OF GRAPHICS.
IT'S A GRAPH!
USUALLY WHEN PEOPLE
ARE TRYING TO ORGANIZE DATA
OR SHARE THE RESULTS
WITH OTHERS OF A SURVEY,
A QUICK AND EASY WAY
TO MAKE SENSE OF THE RESULTS
IS JUST BY USING A GRAPH.
THIS IS A BAR GRAPH
THAT EASILY LETS US SEE
THAT 71% OF PEOPLE SURVEYED SAY
THAT THEY HAVE FUN,
RECREATION, AND RELAXATION,
AND THAT THAT'S WHAT THEY GET
OUT OF SPORTS.
BASED ON THE FACT THAT
THE BAR GRAPH ON THE LEFT
IS THE HIGHEST,
WE CAN TELL THAT IT WAS
THE MOST POPULAR RESPONSE.
BASED ON THE HEIGHT
OF THE BAR ON THE RIGHT,
WE KNOW THAT IT RECEIVED
THE FEWEST RESPONSES,
AND THAT ONLY 35% OF PEOPLE
SAID THAT THEY GET
NEW FRIENDS AND ACQUAINTANCES
FROM PLAYING SPORTS.
THIS PROBABLY MEANS THAT THOSE
SURVEYED USUALLY PLAY SPORTS
WITH PEOPLE THAT THEY KNOW.”
Arianna continues,
“THIS ONE IS THE WATER CYCLE.
IT HELPS READERS
TO UNDERSTAND
THAT WATER EVAPORATES
FROM THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH
AND RISES
INTO THE ATMOSPHERE.
FROM THERE,
WATER COOLS AND CONDENSES
INTO RAIN OR SNOW
IN CLOUDS,
AND THEN FALLS AGAIN TO THE
SURFACE AS PRECIPITATION.
THE WATER FALLING ON LAND
COLLECTS IN RIVERS
AND LAKES AND SOIL,
AND MUCH OF IT FLOWS
BACK INTO THE OCEANS
WHERE ONCE AGAIN,
IT'S GOING TO EVAPORATE.
THAT'S THE WATER CYCLE.”
Arianna says, “THIS EXAMPLE
OF THE WATER CYCLE
REMINDS ME OF ONE THAT
I'VE SEEN IN A TEXTBOOK BEFORE.
BY ADDING A DIAGRAM,
IT NOT ONLY HELPS THE READERS
TO VISUALIZE WHAT'S HAPPENING,
BUT ALSO ALLOWS THE WRITER
TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES
MORE EFFECTIVELY.
SO, IT'S A WIN-WIN
FOR BOTH PEOPLE.
THIS LAST GRAPHIC
IS A FLOW CHART.
THIS PERSON
IS TRYING TO THINK
ABOUT THE FLOW FROM LEAVING HOME
TO REACHING SCHOOL.
AFTER THEY LEAVE HOME,
THIS PERSON CHECKS THE TIME.
IF IT'S BEFORE 7:00 AM,
THEY'VE GOT TWO OPTIONS.
THEY CAN EITHER WALK
OR TAKE THE BUS.
EITHER WAY,
THEY REACH SCHOOL.”
Arianna continues:
“THESE ARE JUST SOME
OF THE GRAPHICS
THAT WE SEE
IN THE WORLD AROUND US.
THERE ARE SO MANY
OUT THERE.
WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN GRAPHICS
OR GRAPHIC TEXTS?
AT SCHOOL?
OUT IN THE COMMUNITY?
WHAT MESSAGES WERE THEY
COMMUNICATING TO YOU?
IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T GUESSED,
I LOVE PLANTS.
IN FACT, IF YOU WERE TO TAKE
A TOUR OF THIS ROOM,
YOU WOULD FIND PLANTS
OF ALL SHAPES AND SIZES.
I'VE GOT CACTI--
HERE'S ONE OF MY FAVOURITES.
AND I ALSO HAVE
SOME PRETTY UNIQUE AIR PLANTS,
LIKE THIS ONE.
AIR PLANTS ARE UNIQUE
IN THAT THEY ACTUALLY
DON'T REQUIRE SOIL.
THEY USE THEIR ROOTS,
RIGHT HERE,
TO ANCHOR THEMSELVES
RATHER THAN FOR
THE UPTAKE OF NUTRIENTS.
IN FACT,
THEY GET THEIR NUTRIENTS
FROM THE AIR AND WATER.
I WATER THIS ONE
PROBABLY ABOUT ONCE A WEEK.
PLANTS THAT REQUIRE SOIL
ARE A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT.
THROUGH A PROCESS
CALLED PHOTOSYNTHESIS,
PLANTS GET THEIR NUTRIENTS
AND GROW.
HMM.
THIS IS GIVING ME AN IDEA
FOR A GREAT GRAPHIC TEXT.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT PLANTS
NEED TO GROW?
DO YOU KNOW ALL OF THE PARTS
OF A PLANT?
GRAB YOUR SHEET OF PAPER,
AND WHILE WE WATCH THIS VIDEO
WITH BLYNK AND AAZOO,
SEE IF YOU CAN CREATE
YOUR OWN GRAPHIC TEXT
BASED ON THE PARTS
OF A PLANT.
ALSO INCLUDE
OR CONSIDER INCLUDING
WHAT PLANTS NEED
IN ORDER TO GROW.
IF YOU'VE GOT COLOURED MARKERS
OR COLOURED PENCILS,
CONSIDER ADDING COLOUR TOO.
THINK ABOUT ADDING TITLES
OR LABELS TO YOUR DRAWING
SO THAT IT'S CLEAR
FOR YOUR READER
TO UNDERSTAND EACH
OF THE PARTS OF A PLANT.
ARE YOU READY
TO GET STARTED?
LET'S WATCH.”
Blynk and Aazoo travel in a spaceship.
A dark-haired girl named Yohanna waves.
People appear on monitors. A Cheetah is
measured. Blynk is electrocuted.
Blynk sings to himself, “BLYNK & AAZOO
I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU”
A title reads, “Blynk & Aazoo,
Imagine, investigate, Invent!”
Aazoo dances in a tutu. Blynk looks shocked.
[Excited Squealing]
Aazoo poses.
Blynk says, “HUH?”
Aazoo replies “OOH!”
[Popping]
Aazoo’s tutu flies over its head.
M. A.V.I.S. says,
“2-2 TYPE TUTU DETECTED.”
[HYSTERICAL SQUEALING]
M.A.V.I.S. continues,
“INQUIRY BOOTH TRANSMITTING.”
[Alarm sounding]
M. A.V.I.S. says,
“INCOMING INQUIRY”.
Blynk says,
“AAZOO!”
[Yelping]
Blynk groans, “OOH.”
[Yipping]
A mechanical arm lowers from the ceiling.
It takes off Aazoo’s tutu.
Aazoo says, “AYEE!”
[Chuckling]
Blynk and Aazoo approach two large monitors.
Yohanna appears on one of them.
Latitia says, “HI BLYNK, HI AAZOO.
I'M LATITIA.”
[Greetings]
Blynk and Aazoo wave to Latitia.
Latitia continues,
“I GREW A SUNFLOWER LAST SUMMER
THAT WAS TALLER THAN ME.
IT MADE ME WONDER,
COULD I GROW A PLANT
AS BIG AS A SKYSCRAPER?”
Blynk and Aazoo say “OHHHH”
M. A.V.I.S. adds:
”INVENTION POTENTIAL: HIGH”.
[Whispering]
M.A.V.I.S. continues,
“IT APPEARS YOU HAVE
"PLANTED" AN IDEA
IN BLYNK AND AAZOO'S MINDS.
GET IT? "PLANTED"?”
[Clueless noises]
Blynk and Aazoo shrug.
M.A.V.I.S. says,
“NO IDEAS HAVE BLOSSOMED.”
Blynk says, “JANA! M.A.V.I.S., LATASSA!”
M.A.V.I.S interrupts,
“CALLING INTERSTELLAR
SCIENCE COUNCIL CAPTAIN.”
A captain asks, “BLYNK! AAZOO!
WHO HAS
A QUESTION TODAY?”
Latitia says, “HI. I'M LATITIA
AND I WANT TO KNOW
HOW I CAN GROW A PLANT
AS BIG AS A SKYSCRAPER.”
Anthony replies,
“HI, LATITIA. I'M ANTHONY.
NOW, THAT WOULD BE
A BIG PLANT.”
Blynk and Aazoo agree, “MM-HMM.”
Anthony continues, “OKAY, WELL,
WHY DON'T WE START
BY UNDERSTANDING
HOW PLANTS GROW?
BLYNK, PULL UP THE PLANT FILES-
SUBCATEGORY: FLOWER POWER.”
BLYNK cheers, “YEE-HA”.
A video plays on a screen.
M.A.V.I.S. Instructs,
“THROUGH THEIR ROOTS,
PLANTS ABSORB WATER
FROM THE SOIL.
THROUGH THEIR LEAVES THEY ABSORB
CARBON DIOXIDE FROM THE AIR,
AND ENERGY FROM THE SUN.
TOGETHER,
THESE THREE THINGS
HELP PLANTS PRODUCE
THEIR OWN FOOD.
THIS PROCESS IS CALLED
PHOTOSYNTHESIS.”
Blynk says, “OOH.”
Latitia asks, “PHO-TO-SYNTHESIS?”
Anthony responds, “RIGHT.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS MEANS TO PUT
TOGETHER WITH THE HELP OF LIGHT.
THROUGH PHOTOSYNTHESIS,
PLANTS MAKE A NATURAL SUGAR
CALLED GLUCOSE,
WHICH THEY USE FOR ENERGY.
THE GLUCOSE THEN GOES TO
ALL PARTS OF THE PLANT-
THE LEAVES,
FLOWERS, AND FRUIT!”
Latitia replies, “COOL!”
Blynk says, “AYEE!”
Latitia asks, “SO,
“TO HELP A PLANT GROW TALL,
I NEED TO MAKE SURE IT HAS
SUNLIGHT, AIR, AND WATER.”
Anthony answers:
“YOU GOT IT!
THAT'S WHAT YOU NEED
FOR PHOTOSYNTHESIS.”
Aazoo says, “TAH-DAH!”
M.A.V.I.S adds,
“PHOTOGRAPH
AND SYNTHESIZER DETECTED,
BUT NO PHOTOSYNTHESIS
OCCURRING.”
[Disappointed groaning]
Latitia asks, “SO, WHAT'S THE BIGGEST PLANT
I COULD GROW?”
Anthony says, “BLYNK,
CHECK PLANT FILES, PLEASE-
SUBCATEGORY:
THE HUMONGOUS AMONG US.”
A large pink flower appears on the monitor.
Blynk and Aazoo gasp.
Anthony continues, “THE LARGEST FLOWER
IS CALLED THE TITAN ARUM.”
Latitia replies, “OOH.
IT'S SO PRETTY!
I WONDER WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE.”
M.A.V.I.S. responds,
“SOURCING SCENT FILES.”
Anthony pleads, “NO, M.A.V.I.S., DON'T!”
M.A.V.I.S. says, “RELEASING
TITAN ARUM SCENT.”
[Scent hissing through vents]
[Blynk and Aazoo gag]
Anthony adds, “THE TITAN ARUM STINKS.
IT SMELLS SO BAD,
IT'S ALSO KNOWN
AS THE CORPSE FLOWER.
IT HAS THE COLOUR AND SMELL
OF ROTTING MEAT
TO ATTRACT THE FLIES AND BEETLES
THAT POLLINATE IT.”
Latitia replies, “EWW!”
Anthony adds, “BUT IT IS HUMONGOUS!”
M.A.V.I.S. adds,
“THE TITAN ARUM CAN GROW
TO THREE METERS TALL
AND THREE METERS IN DIAMETER.
BE-"LEAF" IT OR NOT.
GET IT? BE-"LEAF"?”
[Groaning]
Anthony continues,
“JUST ONE LEAF OF THE TITAN ARUM
CAN BE AS BIG AS A SMALL TREE!”
Latitia asks,
“HMM. BUT IS THERE A HUMONGOUS
PLANT THAT'S NOT STINKY?”
Anthony answers,
“FORTUNATELY, YES. BLYNK?”
Blynk says, “YEE-HA.”
Anthony adds,
“THE TALLEST FLOWERING PLANT
IN THE WORLD
IS ACTUALLY A TYPE
OF EUCALYPTUS TREE
FOUND IN AUSTRALIA
CALLED THE SWAMP GUM.”
Latitia asks, “SO, HOW BIG IS IT?”
M.A.V.I.S. replies,
“THE SWAMP GUM CAN REACH HEIGHTS
OVER 90 METRES.
IT IS THE SECOND TALLEST TREE
IN THE WORLD.
TREES CAN GROW TALLER
THAN OTHER PLANTS
BECAUSE THEY ARE SUPPORTED
BY TRUNKS MADE OF WOOD AND BARK.”
Latitia asks, “SO, IF THIS IS
THE SECOND TALLEST TREE--’
Anthony interrupts,
“JUST WAIT
TILL YOU MEET HYPERION.”
Latitia asks, “WHO?”
Blynk says, “AYEE!”
M.A.V.I.S. instructs,
“COAST REDWOODS
OR SEQUOIA SEMPERVIRENS
HOLD THE RECORD
FOR THE TALLEST TREES ON EARTH.
REDWOODS APPEARED ON EARTH
JUST AFTER
THE TIME OF THE DINOSAURS
AND HAVE BEEN AROUND
MUCH LONGER THAN HUMANS.”
Anthony adds,
“THIS NARROW COASTAL PART
OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
HAS THE IDEAL CONDITIONS
FOR REDWOODS TO FLOURISH.
IT'S A VERY UNIQUE PLACE.
IN FACT, THERE'S NO OTHER PLACE
LIKE IT ON EARTH!”
M.A.V.I.S. agrees, “AFFIRMATIVE.
COOL, MOIST AIR
OFF THE PACIFIC OCEAN
KEEPS THE TREES DAMP,
EVEN IN HOT SUMMERS.
THE SOIL IS RICH
IN NUTRIENTS.”
Blynk says, “OH.”
M.A.V.I.S. continues, “REDWOODS HAVE FEW
NATURAL ENEMIES
AND THEIR THICK BARK PROTECTS
THE TREES AGAINST FOREST FIRES.”
Anthony says,
“IN THESE EXCELLENT CONDITIONS,
IT'S NOT UNUSUAL FOR REDWOODS
TO GROW 60 TO 90 METRES TALL,
AND IT'S IN
REDWOOD NATIONAL PARK
THAT YOU WILL FIND THE TALLEST
TREE IN THE WORLD.”
Latitia exclaims, “HYPERION?”
Anthony responds, “YEP!
THE TALLEST REDWOOD THERE
IS INDEED HYPERION.”
Latitia asks,
“SO, HOW TALL IS IT?”
Anthony answers, “HYPERION IS ABOUT
120 METRES TALL.
THAT'S THE HEIGHT
OF A 40-STORY BUILDING!”
Latitia says, “PERFECT!
THAT'S WHAT I WANT.
SO, CAN I PLANT ONE
IN MY BACKYARD?”
Anthony replies,
“WELL, YOU COULD, BUT REDWOODS
TAKE HUNDREDS OF YEARS
TO REACH
THEIR MAXIMUM HEIGHT.
WE THINK HYPERION IS
BETWEEN 600 AND 800 YEARS OLD.”
Latitia says, “OH, NO.
THAT'S WAY TOO LONG
TO WAIT.”
Anthony says,
“WELL, IF YOU CAN'T GROW A TREE
AS TALL AS A SKYSCRAPER,
HOW ABOUT LIVING IN A SKYSCRAPER
COVERED IN TREES?”
Latitia says, “REALLY? WOW!
THAT SOUNDS COOL.”
Anthony commands,
“BLYNK, PULL UP
THE FUTURE FILES, PLEASE.
SUBCATEGORY:
VERTICAL FORESTS.
JUST IMAGINE,
IN THE FUTURE,
BEING ABLE TO LIVE
IN A FOREST IN THE SKY.
WELL, RIGHT NOW,
IN CITIES
ALL AROUND THE WORLD,
PLANS ARE BEING DEVELOPED
TO CREATE THESE APARTMENT
BUILDINGS COVERED IN PLANTS!
IN FACT,
ITALY ALREADY HAS TWO!”
M.A.V.I.S. adds,
“AFFIRMATIVE.
IN THE ITALIAN CITY OF MILAN,
TWO SKYSCRAPERS
ARE CALLED IL BOSCO VERTICALE,
WHICH MEANS
"THE VERTICAL FOREST".
MORE THAN 800 TREES
AND 15,000 PLANTS
LIVE ON THE BALCONIES
OF THE TOWERS.”
Latitia exclaims, “WHAT A GREAT IDEA!”
Anthony continues, “THE PLANTS ARE NOT
JUST GREAT TO LOOK AT.
THEY ALSO REDUCE POLLUTION
WHILE PRODUCING OXYGEN,
HELP MAKE THE TEMPERATURE
AND MOISTURE
IN THE BUILDINGS JUST RIGHT,
PROVIDE SHADE IN THE SUMMER,
AND BLOCK THE WIND
IN THE WINTER.”
Latitia says, “I'D LOVE TO LIVE
IN A PLACE LIKE THAT!
PLANTS ARE SO GOOD
FOR US.
WE SHOULD GROW THEM
EVERYWHERE!”
Blynk says, “GA-HA!”
M.A.V.I.S. says,
“BLYNK, THE INVENTION STATION
IS READY.”
[Beeping Music plays]
Blynk says “OOH”
Blynk runs through a doorway. It flicks
Switches and a liquid moves through a tube.
Blynk uses an eyedropper. He rolls out a
cart with a beaker on it
Aazoo says, “OOH!”
[CHUCKLING]
Blynk says, “WAH!”
Blynk holds the eyedropper as he pulls a seed
Out of a sack.
Latitia asks, “IS THAT GOING TO BE A PLANT
THAT CAN GROW ANYWHERE?”
Blynk replies, “OH, MMM--”
He uses the eyedropper to drop liquid in a
flower pot.
Blynk says, “HAA!”
Aazoo drops more seeds into the flower pot.
Aazoo says, “AH!”
Blynk replies, “PIKA!”
M.A.V.I.S. says,
“RAPID GERMINATION DETECTED.
OUT-OF-CONTROL GROWTH ABOUT TO--”
Plants grow out of the spaceship.
Aazoo says, “AHH!”
Blynk says, “AAZOO!”
M.A.V.I.S. continues,
“INVENTION FAILURE.
NO, INVENTION SUCCESSFUL.”
Latitia says, “WOW.
THAT'S A LOT OF PLANTS.
MAYBE WHEN I GROW UP,
I'LL FIGURE OUT HOW TO GROW
TREES ON THE SPACE STATION!”
Anthony responds, “THAT WOULD BE SO COOL!”
Latitia says, “THANKS, EVERYONE.”
Anthony, Aazoo, and Blynk say “BYE!”
M.A.V.I.S. adds,
“THE SEARCH FOR INVENTIONS
CONTINUES.
ALL SYSTEMS ENGAGED.”
Blynk and Aazoo cheer.
[Theme song plays]
A robotic voice sings,
“BLYNK AND AAZOO
I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU”
Arianna says, “I LOVE THIS EPISODE.
PROBABLY BECAUSE
IT WAS ALL ABOUT PLANTS.
AS YOU WATCHED, DID YOU SEE WHAT
WAS REQUIRED FOR PLANTS TO GROW?
DID YOU CATCH
ALL THE PARTS OF A PLANT?
WHILE WATCHING, I LEARNED
THAT PLANTS NEED SUN AND WATER
AND THAT THEY'RE VERY IMPORTANT
FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO GROW.
SOME PLANTS ALSO NEED SOIL.
IN THE SOIL WE CAN FIND
THE ROOTS, AS WELL AS THE STEM.
GROWING UP TOWARDS THE SUN
WE FIND THE STEM OF THE PLANT
AND ON THE STEM
IS WHERE WE FIND THE LEAVES.
I THOUGHT IT WAS PRETTY NEAT
TO SEE THE CORPSE FLOWER.
I'M SO GLAD THERE WAS
NO SMELL-O-VISION.
AND I ALSO NOTICED
IN THE VIDEO
THAT THEY USED MEASUREMENTS
AND A SCALE
TO HELP US UNDERSTAND JUST HOW
BIG THE DIFFERENT TREES ARE.”
THIS IS MY GRAPHIC TEXT.
Arianna holds up a drawing of a plant.
Arianna says, “CHECK IT OUT!
I INCLUDED ALL OF THE ELEMENTS
THAT PLANTS NEED,
AND I DREW THE PLANT
IN THE MIDDLE.
SO, HERE I'VE GOT SOME WATER,
PROBABLY FROM RAIN.
I'VE GOT THE SUN UP HERE,
AND THEN I'VE GOT THE SOIL
ON THE BOTTOM.
IN THE MIDDLE HERE
I'VE GOT MY PLANT
WITH DIFFERENT PARTS
THAT ARE LABELED.”
Arianna asks, “WHAT DID YOU DRAW?
THE NEAT THING
ABOUT A GRAPHIC TEXT
IS THAT THEY CAN SOMETIMES
BE DIFFERENT
FROM ANOTHER GRAPHIC TEXT
EVEN IF THEY'RE ABOUT
THE SAME THING.
AFTER YOU'RE FINISHED
WITH YOUR GRAPHIC TEXT,
IT'S ALWAYS IMPORTANT
TO REFLECT ON YOUR WORK.
HERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS
THAT YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER.
DOES MY GRAPHIC APPEAL
TO THE READER?
DOES IT INCLUDE COLOUR
OR INTERESTING PICTURES?
DID I CONVEY THE INFORMATION
PRESENTED IN MY RESEARCH
SO THAT THE READER
CAN LEARN SOMETHING NEW?
DID I PROOFREAD
MY GRAPHIC TEXT
FOR SPELLING
OR GRAMMATICAL ERRORS?
DID I USE THE SPACE
ON THE PAGE WISELY
SO THAT THE INFORMATION
IS EVENLY SPREAD OUT
AND THAT THE TEXT
IS A GOOD SIZE FOR THE READER?
WHEN I LOOK
AT MY GRAPHIC TEXT,
I THINK IT APPEALS TO THE READER
BECAUSE I USED BRIGHT COLOURS
AND I ALSO USED COLOURS
THAT YOU'D NORMALLY SEE
IN A DIAGRAM OF A PLANT.
COLOURS LIKE BROWN
FOR THE SOIL
AND GREEN FOR THE STEM
AS WELL AS THE LEAVES.
I THINK THAT I'M EFFECTIVELY
COMMUNICATING MY MESSAGE
BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH IT'S NOT
THE MOST PERFECT DRAWING,
THE READER CAN STILL SEE
ALL OF THE IMPORTANT PARTS
AND I'VE ALSO INCLUDED
CLEAR LABELS.
I TRIED TO MAKE THEM
CAPITALIZED.”
Arianna continues,
“AS I WAS WATCHING,
I ALSO MADE SURE THAT I WROTE
DOWN THE CORRECT SPELLING
FOR EACH OF MY WORDS.
THEY WERE ALSO WORDS THAT I WAS
PRETTY FAMILIAR WITH,
BUT IN CASE THERE WAS ONE
THAT MAYBE I WAS UNSURE ABOUT,
I KNOW THAT I CAN ALWAYS
GO BACK TO A DICTIONARY
TO DOUBLE-CHECK
THE SPELLING.
I WOULD HATE TO CREATE
A GRAPHIC TEXT FOR SOMEONE
AND HAVE SPELLING MISTAKES
ALL THROUGHOUT IT.
IF YOU LOOK AT MY DIAGRAM,
I THINK THAT
IT'S ABOUT THE RIGHT SIZE.
I USED THE MAJORITY
OF THE PAGE
SO THAT IT'S LARGE ENOUGH
FOR THE READER
TO BOTH SEE AND READ
MY INFORMATION.
I WOULD SAY THAT
I SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED
MY FIRST INFO GRAPHIC
FOR TODAY.
HOW ABOUT YOU?
HOW DO YOU FEEL
ABOUT YOUR INFO GRAPHIC?
I'M SURE IT'S A GREAT ONE.”
Arianna says,
“HERE'S ANOTHER GRAPHIC TEXT
TO HELP US UNDERSTAND
THE STAGES OF THE GROWTH
OF A PLANT IN A MORE CLEAR WAY.
HERE WE HAVE THE LIFE CYCLE
OF A PLANT.
I KNOW THIS
BECAUSE OF THE TITLE.
THE SUBHEADING TELLS ME
THAT ALL LIVING THINGS
HAVE A LIFE CYCLE.
IT ALSO LETS ME KNOW
THAT THE STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT
THAT A LIVING THING
GROWS THROUGH
IS CALLED THE LIFE CYCLE.
I'M GONNA START OFF IN THE
MIDDLE OF THIS GRAPHIC TEXT.
THERE'S AN IMAGE OF A SUN,
AND IT'S TELLING ME
THAT THE SUN PLAYS
AN IMPORTANT ROLE
IN THE LIFE CYCLE
OF EVERY LIVING BEING.
I THINK THAT IT'S AT
THE CENTRE OF THIS TEXT
BECAUSE IT'S IMPORTANT
AND PLAYS A ROLE
AT EVERY SINGLE STAGE
OF THE LIFE CYCLE.
NEXT, I'M GONNA MOVE ON
TO THE SEED.
HERE IT TELLS ME
THAT IS PLANTED IN THE SOIL,
AND THAT IT NEEDS
SUN AND WATER.
I NOTICE
THAT THERE'S AN ARROW
AND THE ARROW IS NOW MOVING
FROM SEED TO GERMINATION,
WHICH IS THE NEXT STAGE
IN THE LIFE CYCLE.
HERE, ARROWS WILL GUIDE ME
ON TO THE NEXT STAGE.
OFTEN IN GRAPHIC TEXT,
ARROWS OR LINES ARE USED
TO SHOW MOVEMENT.
IT'S ALSO USED FOR DIRECTION
OR TO BE ABLE TO CONNECT
TO THINGS THAT THEY ARE NAMING.
NEXT, WE'RE GONNA MOVE ON
TO GERMINATION.
THIS IS WHEN THE CONDITIONS OF
WATER, SUN, AND SOIL ARE MET,
AND THE SEED CAN GERMINATE
AND GROW A SPROUT.
FROM THERE, WE MOVE ON
TO THE ROOTS AND STEM.
THE STEM TRIES TO PUSH ITS WAY
UPWARDS TOWARDS THE SOIL,
AND THE ROOTS GROW DEEP
TOWARDS THE GROUND.”
Arianna goes on,
“THE NEXT STAGE
IN THE LIFE CYCLE OF A PLANT
IS THE SEEDLING.
THE YOUNG PLANT GROWS LEAVES
AND GROWS TOWARDS THE SUN.
THE SUN WILL HELP WITH THE
PROCESS OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS
AND WILL ALSO HELP THE SEEDLING
TO GROW INTO A MATURE PLANT.
FINALLY,
THE PLANT IS MATURED
AND WILL MOVE
INTO POLLINATION.
THE MATURE PLANT
CONTAINS FLOWERS.
THESE FLOWERS HAVE SEEDS.
THE SEEDS ARE POLLINATED
BY ANIMALS OR THE WIND.
THEY SCATTER THE SEEDS
AND HELP TO PRODUCE
EVEN MORE FLOWERS.
ONCE AGAIN,
WHEN THE SEEDS ARE SPREAD,
THE LIFE CYCLE BEGINS
ALL OVER AGAIN.
THAT'S KIND OF WHY WE CALL IT
THE LIFE CYCLE.
I WANT YOU TO NOTICE
THE LABELS.
EXAMINE HOW EACH OF THEM
ARE RELATED TO THE GRAPHIC.
EACH LABEL HAS A PURPOSE.
THE MOST IMPORTANT LABELS
MAY BE EITHER IN CAPITAL LETTERS
OR BOLD TYPE
OR MAYBE USING
A LARGER FONT.
KEEP THAT IN MIND
FOR YOUR OWN GRAPHIC TEXTS
WHEN YOU'RE CREATING THEM.
YOU CAN USE
DIFFERENT TYPES OF FONT
IN ORDER TO BRING DIFFERENT
TYPES OF MEANING TO YOUR WORDS.
WHEN WE LOOK
AT GRAPHIC TEXTS,
IT'S ALSO IMPORTANT TO IDENTIFY
THE RELATIONSHIP
AMONG THE VISUALS AND THE
INFORMATION THAT'S THERE.
HERE WE CAN SEE THAT THERE ARE
DIFFERENT STAGES OF THE PLANT
FROM SEED TO POLLINATION.”
Arianna adds,
“EACH IMAGE
IS STRATEGICALLY PLACED
TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND
THE PHASES OF THE PLANT'S LIFE.
YOU CAN SEE IT
ACTUALLY CHANGING
AND GROWING BIGGER AND BIGGER
AS WE MOVE THROUGH THE CYCLE.
IT STARTS OFF AS A SEED,
AND THEN FINALLY YOU SEE
A FULL PLANT WITH ITS FLOWER
AND THERE'S A BEE
THAT'S POLLINATING IT.
NOW THAT YOU KNOW A LITTLE BIT
MORE ABOUT GRAPHIC TEXTS,
IT'S TIME FOR YOU
TO CREATE ANOTHER ONE!
REMEMBER WHEN CREATING
A GRAPHIC TEXT,
YOU MAY WANNA MAKE USE
OF DIFFERENT THINGS.
YOU WANNA THINK
ABOUT TITLES.
SOMETIMES
THEY'RE IN BOLD FONT
SO THAT IMPORTANT WORDS
STAND OUT TO YOUR READER.
YOU MIGHT ALSO WISH
TO USE DIFFERENT COLOURS
LIKE I DID
IN MY OWN GRAPHIC TEXT.
YOU CAN USE
CAPTIONS OR LABELS,
AND THESE REALLY HELP
TO DESCRIBE
WHAT'S HAPPENING
IN YOUR IMAGES.
ARROWS OR LINES HELP WITH
THE FLOW OR MOVEMENT OF IDEAS,
SIMILAR TO THE ARROWS
THAT YOU SAW
IN THE LIFE CYCLE
OF A PLANT.”
Arianna continues,
“THESE ARE JUST SOME
OF THE GRAPHIC TEXT FEATURES
THAT YOU MIGHT LIKE TO USE.
REMEMBER, THE GRAPHIC TEXT
IS A VISUAL WAY
TO REPRESENT SOMETHING.
SO, DO YOU REMEMBER
AT THE BEGINNING
I ASKED YOU TO GRAB
TWO PIECES OF PAPER?
WELL, WE KNOW THAT
YOU'VE ALREADY USED ONE,
AND NOW IT'S TIME
TO USE THE SECOND ONE.
ARE YOU READY?
GRAB YOUR SHEET OF PAPER
AND WHATEVER IT IS
THAT YOU'RE GONNA WRITE WITH.
YOU CAN CHOOSE
ANYTHING AT ALL.
THIS TIME, YOU'RE GONNA BE
MAKING A GRAPHIC TEXT
ABOUT CHANGES OF MATTER.”
Arianna says, “I KNOW,
YOU'RE PROBABLY THINKING
IT'S SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT
FROM A PLANT.
BUT IT'S ALL RELATED
TO SCIENCE.
AND COME TO THINK OF IT,
PLANTS NEED WATER,
AND WE CAN ACTUALLY SEE WATER
IN ALL THREE STATES OF MATTER.
SOLID, LIQUID, AND GAS.
LET'S WATCH A QUICK
SCIENCE XPLOSION
VIDEO
ABOUT SOLIDS, LIQUIDS,
AND GASES, TO HELP US LEARN.
AS YOU WATCH,
START THINKING
ABOUT HOW YOU WOULD CREATE
A GRAPHIC TEXT.
THINK ABOUT WHAT INFORMATION AND
FACTS YOU WOULD LIKE TO INCLUDE.
WHAT COLOURS?
WHAT LAYOUT WOULD YOU LIKE
TO BEST SHARE THIS INFORMATION
WITH YOUR READERS?
WHAT GRAPHICS OR IMAGES
WOULD ALSO BE ABLE
TO BEST CONVEY
THIS INFORMATION?
LASTLY, WHAT'S THE ORDER?
HOW WILL ONE THING FLOW
FROM ONE TO THE NEXT?
I'LL GIVE YOU
A BIT OF A HINT HERE.
SIMILAR TO THE LIFE CYCLE
OF A PLANT,
THE CHANGES OF STATE FOR WATER
HAPPEN IN A CYCLE.
CONSIDER DRAWING AND WRITING
AS WE WATCH.”
A female singer sings,
“WHAT A HIT,
IT'S NOT A TRICK
IT'S
SCIENCE XPLOSION!
JUST FOR YOU, COOL AND NEW
SCIENCE XPLOSION!”
A female narrator says,
“AH, ERIC,
A GREAT MAN OF SCIENCE.
CAN YOU ANSWER MY QUESTIONS?
OKAY,
HERE'S MY FIRST QUESTION.
ALL MATTER IN THE UNIVERSE
EXISTS IN THREE MAIN STATES.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT THEY ARE?
CAN YOU SHOW ME?”
Eric pours water into a cup.
The narrator says, “GOOD!
THE LIQUID STATE, LIKE WATER,
IS ONE OF THEM.
NEXT?”
Eric pours an ice cube into his hand.
The narrator says,
“YES, THE SOLID STATE,
LIKE ICE, IS ANOTHER.
ONE MORE?”
Eric rises out of Eric’s hands.
The narrator continues,
“THE LAST ONE IS THE GASEOUS
OR VAPOROUS STATE, LIKE STEAM.
VERY GOOD, YOU GREAT MAN
OF SCIENCE, YOU!
NOW, FOR MY SECOND QUESTION-
IS IT POSSIBLE
TO CREATE A LIQUID
THAT ALSO ACTS
LIKE A SOLID?”
Eric looks unsure. He shakes his head.
The narrator says,
“YOU SAY NO,
BUT IT IS POSSIBLE!
DEFINITELY YES.
I CAN EVEN SHOW YOU
HOW TO DO IT.
BUT YOU'LL HAVE TO COME OUTSIDE
TO FIND OUT MORE.”
Eric walks outside with an inflatable duck
around his waist. He approaches a small pool.
The narrator says,
“OOPS, SORRY, ERIC.
WHEN I ASKED YOU TO BRING YOUR
POOL, IT WASN'T FOR SWIMMING.”
Eric takes off the inflatable duck.
The narrator continues,
“WE'RE USING THE POOL
AS A BIG BOWL
TO MIX WATER AND CORNSTARCH.
TO GET STARTED,
WE NEED CORNSTARCH-
LOTS AND LOTS
OF CORNSTARCH.”
Eric pours a bag of corn starch into the pool.
The narrator adds,
“YOU CAN ALSO
DO THIS EXPERIMENT
BY MIXING WATER AND CORNSTARCH
IN A MUCH SMALLER BOWL,
BUT THIS IS GOING TO BE
SO MUCH MORE SPECTACULAR!”
Eric adds more corn starch to the pool.
The narrator says,
“OKAY, NOW ADD WATER
UNTIL THE MIXTURE
FEELS AS THICK AS HONEY,
ABOUT TWO PARTS CORNSTARCH
TO ONE PART WATER.”
Eric fills a pitcher with water and pours
it into the pool.
The narrator continues,
“THE SUBSTANCE YOU ARE MAKING,
ERIC,
IS CALLED OOBLECK,
BUT WHEN YOU APPLY
FORCE QUICKLY,
IT ACTS LIKE A SOLID.”
Eric adds more water and stirs.
The narrator adds, “AT A CERTAIN POINT, YOU HAVE TO
MIX IT VERY SLOWLY.
EVEN THOUGH IT'S A LIQUID,
IT GETS VERY HARD TO STIR
AFTER A WHILE.
GREAT JOB.”
Eric gives a thumbs up.
The narrator says, “PERFECT!
TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES
AND WALK ON THE OOBLECK.”
Eric looks unsure. He approaches the pool.
The narrator continues,
“YEP, SHOES OFF.
Eric takes off his shoes and steps into the pool.
[Fanfare playing]
The narrator says,
“AS YOU CAN SEE,
OOBLECK ACTS LIKE A SOLID
WHEN YOU APPLY FORCE,
SUCH AS WALKING ON IT.”
Eric walks across the oobleck.
The narrator adds,
“BUT WHAT IF YOU STOP WALKING
AND STAND STILL?”
Eric stands in the middle of the pool.
His feet sink.
[Suspenseful music playing]
The narrator says,
“NOW IT ACTS LIKE A LIQUID!
PRETTY AMAZING.”
Eric stands at a chalkboard.
He draws a circle and hits it with chalk.
The narrator says,
“WATER IS ONE OF THE ONLY
SUBSTANCES ON EARTH
THAT CAN CHANGE EASILY
FROM ONE STATE TO ANOTHER.
WATER CAN BE A LIQUID,
A SOLID LIKE ICE,
AND GAS OR VAPOUR,
LIKE STEAM.”
A thermometer and a beaker appear.
The narrator continues,
“USUALLY WHEN A SUBSTANCE
CHANGES FROM A LIQUID
TO A SOLID STATE,
IT LOSES VOLUME.
THAT MEANS IT TAKES UP
LESS SPACE.
BUT NOT WATER.
IT'S THE ONLY SUBSTANCE
THAT INCREASES IN VOLUME
WHEN IT FREEZES.
A BOTTLE OF FROZEN WATER
CAN BURST IN THE FREEZER
IF THE BOTTLE ISN'T BIG ENOUGH
WHEN THE WATER EXPANDS.”
Eric stands in the swimming pool.
The narrator adds,
“NOW THAT YOU HAVE
THE POWER OF OOBLECK,
YOU CAN TRY THIS EXPERIMENT AT
HOME WITH THE HELP OF AN ADULT.
TRY MOVING MORE SLOWLY,
ERIC.
IF YOU USE TOO MUCH FORCE,
IT ACTS LIKE A SOLID.”
Eric pulls his feet out of the oobleck
The narrator says,
“AND DON'T FORGET,
IT'S NOT MAGIC.
IT'S SCIENCE!”
Eric picks up his shoes and runs away
from the swimming pool.
A graphic reads, “Science Xplosion.
Produced by GAPC Entertainment.”
Arianna says,
“SO, THERE YOU HAVE IT.
THERE ARE THREE STATES
OF MATTER.
SOLIDS, LIQUIDS, AND GASES.
SOLIDS-
THEY MAKE THEIR OWN SHAPE.
THE SHAPE CHANGES
IF IT'S CRUSHED
OR IF FORCES ACT UPON IT.
THE MOLECULES ARE
REALLY TIGHTLY PACKED TOGETHER
AND THERE'S
VERY LITTLE MOVEMENT.
FOR LIQUIDS,
THEY CAN CHANGE SHAPE.
THEY ACTUALLY TAKE ON
THE SHAPE OF THE CONTAINER
THAT THEY'RE IN.
MOLECULES ARE CLOSE TOGETHER
BUT THEY'RE ALSO FREE
TO MOVE AROUND.
AND LIQUIDS, WE KNOW,
THEY FLOW.
GASES, THOSE MOLECULES
ARE SPREAD FAR APART.
MOLECULES BOUNCE AROUND
BECAUSE OF THE FACT
THAT THEY ARE FULL OF ENERGY.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT SOLIDS,
LIQUIDS, AND GASES?
WHAT WERE YOUR GRAPHIC TEXT
ABOUT THIS INFORMATION
LOOK LIKE?”
Arianna continues,
“HERE'S AN EXAMPLE THAT I WANT
TO SHARE WITH YOU.
YOU'LL SEE THAT
THERE ARE IMAGES HERE
THAT REPRESENT WATER
IN EACH OF ITS STATES.
THERE ARE ICE CUBES
AND YOU'LL ALSO SEE THAT THERE'S
A GLASS OF WATER AND STEAM.
RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE THERE'S THE
MOLECULAR STRUCTURE OF WATER,
WHICH IS MADE UP
OF TWO HYDROGEN MOLECULES
AND ONE OXYGEN MOLECULE.
THERE ARE ALSO IMAGES
TO REPRESENT WHAT
THE MOLECULES LOOK LIKE
IN EACH OF THE STATES.
THERE ARE TITLES AND LABELS TO
HELP THE READER TO UNDERSTAND
ALL OF THE INFORMATION
THAT'S PRESENTED TO THEM.
YOU'LL NOTICE ALSO
THAT THE TITLES ARE BOLD
FOR EACH OF THOSE STATES,
AND THAT THE ARROWS
HELP THE READER
TO UNDERSTAND
THE CHANGES OF STATE.
WHEN WATER GOES
FROM A SOLID TO A GAS,
WE CALL IT SUBLIMATION.
WHEN WATER GOES
FROM A GAS TO A SOLID,
WE CALL IT DEPOSITION.
WHEN WATER GOES
FROM A SOLID TO A LIQUID,
WE CALL THAT MELTING.
AND WHEN WATER
GOES FROM A SOLID--
ACTUALLY FROM A LIQUID
TO A SOLID,
WE CALL THAT SOLIDIFICATION.
WHEN WATER GOES
FROM A LIQUID TO A GAS,
THAT'S EVAPORATION.
AND THEN LASTLY,
WHEN WATER GOES
FROM GAS TO A LIQUID,
WE CALL IT CONDENSATION.
YOU'LL SEE THAT COLUMNS
AT THE BOTTOM
WERE USED TO DESCRIBE
EACH OF THE CHANGES OF STATE.
THIS IS JUST ONE EXAMPLE
OF WHAT A GRAPHIC TEXT
ABOUT THE CHANGES OF MATTER
FOR WATER MAY LOOK LIKE.
WHAT WOULD YOURS LOOK LIKE?
IF YOU'RE NOT FINISHED YET,
DON'T WORRY.
IT'S OKAY.
KEEP WORKING ON IT.
EVEN AFTER THE SHOW,
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE
WHAT YOU'VE COME UP WITH.”
Arianna adds,
“ALSO, I WANT YOU TO THINK
ABOUT ASKING YOURSELF
THOSE IMPORTANT
REFLECTION QUESTIONS,
ONCE YOU'VE FINISHED
YOUR GRAPHIC TEXT.
REFLECTION IS ALWAYS AN
IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR LEARNING.
HERE ARE
THOSE QUESTIONS AGAIN.
DOES MY GRAPHIC
APPEAL TO THE READER?
DOES IT INCLUDE COLOUR
AND/OR INTERESTING PICTURES?
DID I CONVEY THE INFORMATION
PRESENTED IN MY RESEARCH
SO THAT THE READER WILL BE ABLE
TO LEARN SOMETHING NEW?
DID I PROOF ME MY-- BLAH.
WHOA, EXCUSE ME.
DID I PROOFREAD MY GRAPHIC FOR
SPELLING AND GRAMMATICAL ERRORS?
DID I USE THE SPACE
ON THE PAGE WISELY
SO THAT THE INFORMATION
IS EVENLY SPREAD OUT
AND THE TEXT IS A GOOD SIZE
FOR THE READER TO SEE?
ANSWERING THESE QUESTIONS
WILL HELP MAKE YOUR
GRAPHIC TEXTS EVEN BETTER.”
Arianna says,
“TODAY WE LEARNED
ALL ABOUT GRAPHIC TEXTS.
GRAPHIC TEXTS ARE
AN INCREASINGLY POPULAR WAY
TO SHARE INFORMATION
IN NEWSPAPERS, MAGAZINES,
TEXTBOOKS,
AND EVEN ONLINE.
THESE VISUAL REPRESENTATIONS
OF INFORMATION
ARE DESIGNED TO MAKE
BIG, COMPLEX IDEAS
MORE EASY FOR US
TO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND.
WE LEARNED THAT GRAPHIC TEXTS
HAVE FEATURES SUCH AS TITLES,
CAPTIONS, LABELS,
COLUMN AND ROW HEADINGS,
LEGENDS, A SCALE,
AND EVEN UNITS OF MEASUREMENT.
I HOPE THAT YOU GOT STARTED
ON YOUR GRAPHIC TEXT
FOR THE STATES OF MATTER.
IF NOT, REMEMBER,
THERE'S STILL TIME.
JUST BECAUSE THE SHOW
IS COMING TO AN END
DOESN'T MEAN THAT
THE LEARNING HAS TO STOP.
TAKE SOME TIME AFTER THE SHOW
TO PUT THE FINISHING TOUCHES
ON YOUR GRAPHIC TEXT.
AND REMEMBER
TO ASK YOURSELF
THOSE IMPORTANT
REFLECTION QUESTIONS.
REFLECTION
IS ALWAYS IMPORTANT.”
Arianna closes,
”THANKS FOR SPENDING THIS
POWER
HOUR OF LEARNING
WITH ME,
AND UNTIL NEXT TIME,
PLEASE TAKE CARE.
BYE!”
