(Chimes)

Tom says, WHEN MUM SAID,
WE'RE GOING SOMEWHERE
REALLY EXCITING TO PLAY GAMES…

A variety of games appear around Tom as he smiles. With a pop, they disappear.

Tom says, …I WASN'T EXPECTING
THE LEAFY GREEN RETIREMENT HOME
TO PLAY BINGO.

Tom and his parents approach a building with a sign that reads, Leafy Green Old Folks home. Tom’s sister Delia sits on a bench close by with her arms crossed.

Tom’s mum Rita says, COME ON TOM,
GRANNY MAVIS AND GRANDDAD BOB
CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU.

Granny Mavis Grandad Bob wave as they join the family. Tom’s dad Frank and Tom’s mum Rita wave back. Tom smiles.

Granny Mavis says, OH, HELLO TOM.

Grandad Bob says, COME HERE.

Granny Mavis and Grandad Bob hug Tom.

Grandad Bob chuckles.

Tom says, THEY'RE FOSSILS, THEY'RE GREAT.
BUT THIS ISN'T
WHAT I CALL EXCITING.

(Slow, downbeat music plays)

Indoors, a triangle flag banner hangs on a wall. A man walks with a cane. Tom stands beside Grandad Bob who sits in a chair as he reads a newspaper. Dad sits in a yellow chair. A clock ticks loudly. The man who walks with a cane slowly passes Tom.

Tom says, LUCKILY...

A person says, TEAS UP!

Tom says, …VERA TURNED UP WITH
THE TEA TROLLEY

A woman pushes a cart with a tea pot, tea cups, a plate of cookies and a cake.

Vera says, TEA CAKE?

Grandad Bob says, GIVE US A SLICE
OF THAT CAKE!

Tom says, WHICH CHEERED ME UP.

Tom turns the handle of a bingo cage that mixes different coloured balls.

Tom says, AND I GOT TO CALL OUT
THE NUMBERS FOR BINGO!

Tom opens the bingo cage.

He says, I MEAN, WHO KNEW TWO LITTLE
DUCKS WAS ACTUALLY 22?

Tom takes a red ball from the bingo cage. Two ducks float in a pond.

(Quacking)

One of the ducks says, NOBODY TOLD ME.

The other duck quacks.

Tom says, TWO LITTLE DUCKS, QUACK, QUACK,
ANYONE?

Granny Mavis, Grandad Bob, Vera and the man with a cane sit in chairs holding bingo cards. Delia reads a newspaper as she leans against the ticking clock.

Tom asks, ANYONE?

The ticking continues.

Vera says, HOUSE!

Vera jumps from here chair.

Grandad Bob says, WELL DONE.

(Celebrations and cheers)

Mum says, WELL DONE VERA.

Tom says, OH, WELL,
AT LEAST VERE SEEMS EXCITED
DELIA'S IS HAVING A GOOD TIME,
OF COURSE.

Delia lowers her newspaper.

She says, GET ON WITH IT, TOM.

Tom smiles.

He says, IT'S TIME TO,
PLAY - IT!

(Upbeat music plays)

Tom opens a photo album.

He says, HERE'S A PHOTO OF MY GRANNY,
MAVIS, WHEN SHE WAS A BABY.

In the photo album is a picture of a baby beside a picture of Granny Mavis.

Tom says, GRANNY LIKES TO TELL ME SHE'S
ONE HUNDRED AND THREE.

The picture of Granny Mavis says, I'M ONE HUNDRED
AND THREE YEARS YOUNG, TOM.

Tom says, SHE'S JOKING.

The picture of Granny Mavis asks, AM I?

Tom raises an eyebrow.

He says, I THINK.

Tom shrugs.

He says, OK, CAN YOU SPOT
THE BABY TOM GATES?

In the photo album is a picture of Tom and his styled hair on one page and four pictures of babies on the other. One of the babies wears overalls and has flat hair while another wears a striped onesie. One of the babies is waving and has hair that is styled to the side while the last baby smiles with only one tooth.

Tom says, I'LL GIVE YOU A CLUE.
HE'S THE REALLY CUTE ONE.

(Cheerful music plays)

A timer ticks as it fills with the colour blue.

(Claxton)

An orange arrow points to the baby that’s waving and has his hair styled to the side.

Tom says, THERE I AM, SAME HAIR STYLE.
SEE?

A page is flipped in the photo album.

Tom asks, CAN YOU GUESS WHICH ONE
IS MARCUS MELDREW?

In the photo album is a picture of a boy with curly hair and freckles with a furrowed brow. On the other page is four pictures of babies. One of the babies smiles with their hands together while another with freckles smiles with an eyebrow raised. One of the babies has thick hair and the other is sleeping.

Tom whispers, HE HASN'T CHANGED MUCH.

(Upbeat music plays)

A timer ticks as it fills with the colour blue.

(Claxton)

A blue arrow points to the baby with freckles and an eyebrow raised.

Tom says, THERE HE IS.
NOW THERE'S A FEW MORE TO FIND.

A page is flipped in the photo album.

Tom says, SEE IF YOU CAN MATCH THEM UP.
MR FULLERMANS IN THERE TOO.

On one page are four pictures. There is a picture of a woman with glasses, a man with big eyes wearing a tie, a boy with short hair and a girl with pig tails. On the other page are four other pictures. There is a picture of a baby sitting with their hands together. There is a picture of a girl wearing a birthday hat and holding a book, a boy with big eyes holding a toy car and a picture of a girl with glasses holding a teddy bear.

(Upbeat music plays)

A timer ticks as it fills with the colour blue.

Tom says, TIME'S NEARLY UP.
HAVE YOU MATCHED THEM UP YET?

The pictures swap places on the pages so each person is matched to a baby picture. Arrows point to the matches. The man wearing a tie matches the boy holding the toy car. The woman with glasses matches the girl holding the teddy bear. The boy with short hair matches the baby with their hands together and the girl with pig tails matches the girl holding the book.

Tom says, AND HERE'S A PICTURE OF DELIA,
SUCH A HAPPY BABY.

Tom flips a page in the photo album. On one page is a picture of Delia wearing her sunglasses and frowning. On the other page is a picture of baby Delia frowning.

Delia says, TOM!

Delia takes the album from Tom. She leaves with the album and Tom smiles.

Tom says, NOTHING'S CHANGED.

(Upbeat music plays)

Back at the bingo cage, Tom takes out a blue ball.

He calls, 88.

(Clock ticking)

The bingo players check their cards. Vera jumps out of her chair.

She says, HOUSE AGAIN!
I'VE DONE IT AGAIN!
OH, I'VE DONE IT AGAIN!

Tom says, LOOKS LIKE
A COUPLE OF BUGS TO ME.

Two bugs jump off the bingo ball Tom holds.

Tom says, IT'S TIME TO,
MAKE - IT!
LET'S MAKE OUR OWN BUNTING.

Arrows point to a triangle flag banner.

Tom says, YOU WILL NEED
TWO DIFFERENT COLORS
OF A4 PAPER OR CARD,
A RULER, A PENCIL AND PEN,
SOME STRING, SOME SCISSORS.

A piece of green paper and purple are laid on a surface with a ruler, pencil, marker, white string and scissors. A monster holds up a sign with text that reads, be careful with scissors!

The creature says, BE CAREFUL WITH SCISSORS!

Tom says, TAPE.

A roll of tape is added to the collection of items.

A bug says, AND A GLUE STICK?

Tom says, YES.
AND A GLUE TO STICK.

The bug carries a glue stick.

They ask, WHAT, YOU WANT ONE?

Tom says, YES!

The bug says, UH YAY!

The bug celebrates.

(Celebratory music plays)

Tom says, I'M SO PLEASED FOR YOU.

(Funky music plays)

A timer fills with the colour green as it ticks.

Tom says, LET'S GET MAKING!
TAKE YOUR RULER
AND MEASURE THE MIDDLE
OF YOUR PAPER.

The centre of the long sides of the green paper are marked.

Tom says, MARK WITH A PENCIL,
MEASURE HALFWAY AGAIN.

The distance from the middle of the paper to the edges of the paper are measured and the middle of that distance is marked so that there are now three marks on the bottom of the page.

Tom says, USE THE RULER TO DRAW A STRAIGHT
LINE FROM HERE TO HERE,
AND HERE TO HERE.

Straight lines connect to the marks on the paper. The line starts from the top left corner of the paper straight down to the first mark on the bottom of the page. The line then goes up to the single mark on the top of the page, then down to the third mark on the bottom of the page. The last line goes up to the top right corner.

Tom says, DO THE SAME ON THE OTHER SIDE.
TAKE YOUR SCISSORS...

The monster with the sign says, BE CAREFUL WITH SCISSORS!

Tom says, …AND CUT ALONG THE LINES.

The paper separates into pieces from its lines and reveals triangles. The same happens to the purple paper.

Tom says, TAKE THE SPARE PIECES TO DRAW ON
AND PUT THE BIG TRIANGLES
TO THE SIDE.

The green and purple spare pieces are smaller, differently shaped triangles.

Tom says, TAKE THE SPARE PIECES OF PAPER
AND DRAW SIMPLE SHAPE
FOR YOUR BUNTING.
I'M GOING TO DRAW A STAR ON THIS
ONE AND A MONSTER ON THIS ONE.

A star is drawn on the purple piece and a monster on the green piece.

Tom says, CAREFULLY CUT THEM OUT.

The star and creature separate from the spare pieces.

Tom says, BRING BACK YOUR TRIANGLES
AND USE THE GLUE STICK
TO STICK ON YOUR DESIGNS.

The green monster goes to the purple triangle design and the purple star goes to the green triangle design. The triangles decorated with the highest tip pointed downwards.

Tom says, TAKE A THICK BLACK PEN TO DRAW
SOME DETAILS ON YOUR BUNTING.

Designs are added to the triangles.

Tom says, MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE A GAP AT THE
TOP ABOUT A CENTIMETRE WIDE.

Gaps are left on the top of the designs.

Tom says, LOVELY, TURN YOUR BUNTING OVER
AND FOLD DOWN THE TOP LIKE THIS.

The gaps left on the designs are folded over onto the blank back of each triangle.

Tom says, CUT A NICE LONG PIECE OF STRING
AND PLACE IT UNDER THE FOLDS
AND TAPE IT DOWN.

Under the folds of the triangles is a piece of string. The folds are taped down over the string.

Tom says, LIKE THIS.

The decorated triangles are revealed hanging from the piece of string with other decorated triangles to create the final triangle flag banner.

Tom says, YOU CAN MAKE AS MANY FLAGS
AS YOU WANT FOR YOUR BUNTING.
TRY DIFFERENT COLORS
FOR DIFFERENT OCCASIONS
OR JUST MIX AND MATCH.

Other examples of decorated triangle flags are displayed. The examples include yellow and white flags, red and black flags, and a mix of yellow, purple, red, and white flags.

Tom says, AWESOME.

People sing, WELCOME
TO MY BRILLIANT SHOW!

Text reads, The Brilliant World of Tom Gates. The bug slides down a flag banner using a paper clip.

The big cheers, WOOHOO!

(Techno music plays)

Tom says, I KNOW I CALL
THEM THE FOSSILS,
BUT MY GRANDPARENTS
DO HAVE A LOT OF ENERGY.

(Spoons rattle)

Granny Mavis and Grandad Bob dance. Grandad Bob clangs spoons together.

Tom says, GRANDDAD LOVES
PLAYING THE SPOONS.

Granny Mavis says, YES BOB!

Tom says, AND SOMETIMES
HE TAKES HIS TEETH OUT.

Grandad Bob takes out his teeth.

Granny Mavis says, NO BOB!

Tom says, HE PLAYS THOSE TOO!

Grandad Bob snaps his teeth.

Granny Mavis says, BOB NO!
HE'S GOT HIS TEETH OUT AGAIN!

Tom says, DELIA THINKS IT'S HILARIOUS.

Grandad Bob hums as he walks past Delia and snaps his teeth. Delia lowers her newspaper and cracks a smile.

Tom says, DID YOU SEE THAT? I MUST BE
IMAGINING THINGS.

Grandad Bob says, JAWS DROP OUT.
OH STOP IT.

Delia returns to her newspaper.

Tom says, GRANDAD SAYS THIS IS
A VERY IMPORTANT LIFE SKILL.

Tom stands between his grandparents. Grandad Bob snaps his teeth as Granny Mavis dances.

Tom says, I THINK I'D RATHER
PLAY THE SPOONS.
IT'S TIME FOR,
DRAW - IT!

(Upbeat music plays)

Tom says, IT'S LIZ, SHE WRITES AND DRAWS
ALL THE TOM GATES BOOKS.

A woman with long brown hair and bangs wears a blue shirt. She sits at a table with a paper pad and a container of markers.

She says, AND NOW
I'M GOING TO DRAW THE FOSSILS.
SO THE FOSSILS
ARE TOM'S GRANDPARENTS
AND HE LIKES
TO CALL THEM THE FOSSILS
BECAUSE HE THINKS THEY'RE
VERY OLD AND ANCIENT,
BUT REALLY,
THEY ARE FULL OF ENERGY!
SO, I'M GOING
TO DRAW THEM DANCING.

Liz holds a pencil

She says, SO WHEN I DRAW PEOPLE,
I QUITE OFTEN HAVE TO DRAW
LOTS OF DIFFERENT SKETCHES.
I HAVE TO DRAW OVER
AND OVER AGAIN IN PENCIL.
SO THAT'S WHAT I'VE STARTED
TO DO HERE ALREADY.
I HAVE JUST TRIED TO WORK OUT
THEIR BODY POSITIONS
AND WHERE
THE HANDS ARE GOING TO GO.

On the paper pad is a rough sketch of Tom standing between his grandparents.

Liz says, SO I'VE STARTED THIS ONE
AND I WASN'T QUITE HAPPY
WITH THE HAND.
SO I'M GOING
TO JUST KEEP DRAWING.

Liz works on her drawing of Grandad Bob. She works on drawing his left hand.

She says, I THINK THAT'S BETTER NOW.
AND YOU CAN SEE, LOOK,
IT IS REALLY ROUGH.
YOU DON'T HAVE
TO BE NEAT AND TIDY,
THAT'S THE WHOLE
POINT OF A SKETCH.

(Upbeat music plays)

In a time lapse, Liz works on her sketch.

Liz says, RIGHT,
LET'S JUST SLIP THIS UNDERNEATH.

Liz slides her drawing under a fresh piece of paper from the pad.

She says, AND...

Liz smooths out the paper over the sketch that can be seen through the paper.

Liz says, CAN YOU SEE?
I HAVE USED VERY THIN PAPER
SO, I CAN SEE ALL THE LINES
AND SO I CAN SEE
WHERE THE BODY SHAPES ARE
AND THE HANDS.
NOW I'M GOING TO DRAW
OVER THE TOP IN PEN.

Liz holds a pen.

Tom says, OH, I SEE.

Liz says, SO LET'S START WITH GRANDDAD.

Liz outlines her sketch of Grandad Bob.

She says, THAT'S GRANDAD'S HAIR.

In a time lapse, Liz continues to outline her sketch.

She says, SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO
JUST DO ONE DRAWING
YOU CAN KEEP ON
DOING LOTS OF DIFFERENT DRAWINGS
IF YOU DON'T FEEL LIKE
YOU'VE GOT IT QUITE RIGHT.

Liz continues her outline.

She says, SO, THAT'S GRANDDAD'S HAND.
CAN YOU SEE HOW
HAVING THE LINE UNDERNEATH
MAKES IT MUCH EASIER
JUST TO GET THE LEGS
AND THE BODY POSITION
IN THE RIGHT PLACE.

Liz continues the outline based on her sketch.

She says, NOW I'M GOING
TO DRAW GRANNY MAVIS.
NICE PAIR OF EARRINGS ON
AND SHE HAS GLASSES AS WELL.

Liz starts on the outline of Granny Mavis.

She says, I'M GOING TO HAVE,
GRANNY MAVIS'
HAS GOT A HAND ON HER HIP.
I'M TRYING TO GET A BIT
OF MOVEMENT IN HER SKIRT.

Liz works on the outline of Granny Mavis’ skirt. She adds details to Granny Mavis’ hair and face.

She says, SO THEN I'M GOING TO ADD TOM.
TOM'S FLAT TOP HAIR STYLE.

Liz works on Tom’s outline and adds some other details to Granny Mavis’s skirt.

She says, RIGHT,
COUPLE MORE THINGS
SO I'M GOING TO TAKE A PENCIL,
AND JUST ADD A BIT OF SHADING.
A BIT OF SHADOW
UNDER THE FEET AGAIN.

Liz adds more details to the drawing with a pencil.

She says, AND THAT,
LET'S HAVE A LOOK AT THE PENCIL,
AT THE SKETCH UNDERNEATH.

Liz pulls back the final drawing to reveal the sketch on the paper underneath.

She says, THERE YOU GO. SO YOU CAN
SEE THE PENCIL SKETCH.

Liz places the drawing back over the sketch.

She says, AND NOW YOU CAN SEE GANNY MAVIS
AND TOM HAVING A DANCE.

Liz laughs.

Tom says, LOVE IT.

People sing, WELCOME
TO MY BRILLIANT SHOW!

Text reads, The Brilliant World of Tom Gates.

(Slow bass music plays)

In the Leafy Green old folks home, Grandad Bob and Granny Mavis continue dancing.

Grandad Bob says, COME ON MAVIS.

He chuckles.

Tom says, THEY'RE DANCING OFF
IN A HURRY
TO GET BACK IN TIME
FOR THE SLIPPED DISCO.

A man says, OH, THEY DON'T
MAKE 'EM LIKE THIS ANYMORE.

Tom says, EVERYONE'S HAVING A GREAT TIME!

People dance.

(Disco music plays)

Tom says, EVEN DELIA.

Delia lightly taps her foot while smiling. She frowns and raises her newspaper over her face.

Tom says, I THINK.

Mum says, OOOO, LOOK AT YOU GO, MUM!

Mum dances with Granny Mavis, who laughs.

Tom says, UGH, MUM DANCING.

Granny Mavis says, LOOK AT ME GO!

Tom rattles spoons.

Granny Mavis says, REALLY GOOD BOB!

Grandad Bob says, GIVE US A TURN MAVIS.
GO ON SHAKE YOUR
TALE FEATHER, MAVIS.

Mum says, GO ON DAD!

Tom says, CAN WE COME BACK HERE NEXT WEEK?

Granny Mavis says, COME BACK ANY TIME.

Disco music plays.

Tom says, BRILLIANT!

Grandad Bob snaps his teeth at Tom.

Grandad Bob says, HERE GRANDSON!

Tom frowns.

He says, I'LL STICK TO THE SPOONS.
THANKS, GRANDDAD.

A man says, OH, TOM CRACKING SPOONS.

Grandad Bob says, YEAH, I'VE STILL GOT IT.

Grandad Bob laughs.
