A fly flies through a window into a school.
Tom says, I'M IN 5F!
MR. FULLERMAN'S CLASS.
Mr. Fullerman says, GOOD MORNING, CLASS.
I HOPE YOU'RE ALL
PAYING ATTENTION.
Mr. Fullerman swats at the fly that flies around him. Tom watches the fly and smiles.
Mr. Fullerman says, TODAY'S
LESSON IS ABOUT...
Mr. Fullerman watches the fly as it flies above him.
Florence says, SIR, IT'S A FLY, SIR.
Mr. Fullerman says, THANK YOU, FLORENCE.
NO NEED TO WORRY ABOUT A FLY.
FAR MORE IMPORTANT IS THE FIRST
EVER MOON LANDING IN 1969.
THREE ASTRONAUTS BRAVELY
FLEW TO THE MOON
IN THE ROCKET APOLLO 11.
THAT'S THE ROCKET
THAT CAME AFTER APOLLO 10
AND BEFORE APOLLO 12.
Mr. Fullerman chuckles. The fly lands on Mr. Fullerman’s head.
(Fly buzzing)
Mr. Fullerman looks around him. Tom struggles not to laugh.
(Inspirational buzzing)
The fly, dressed like an astronaut, hops across Mr. Fullerman’s head while carrying a flag. He places the flag on Mr. Fullerman’s. The fly salutes the flag.
Mr. Fullerman says, THE FIRST MAN
ON THE MOON WAS NEIL ARMSTRONG.
BUT WHO WAS THE SECOND?
Tom furrows his brow. Amy and Marcus, on either side of Tom, raise their hands.
Amy and Marcus say, OH!
Tom says, I BET AMY KNOWS
SHE'S REALLY CLEVER.
Amy says, I KNOW AS IT BUZZ ALDRIN.
Mr. Fullerman says, THAT'S RIGHT AMY.
Marcus says, HUMPH!
I KNEW THAT.
Tom shakes his head and points his thumb at Marcus.
Tom says, BUZZ ALDRIN, GREAT NAME
FOR A BUG ASTRONAUT!
Tom grins.
He says, WOAH!
(Jazz music plays)
On Mr. Fullerman’s head, the fly dances.
Tom says, COOL!
The fly does a flip and continues dancing as lights flash. Mr. Fullerman raises his eyes up towards the fly. He slaps the fly and Tom gasps. Mr. Fullerman clears his throat and wipes his hand on his tie. The fly remains on his head.
Mr. Fullerman says, AH! WELL, NO,
FUNNILY ENOUGH,
NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW THIS,
BUT THERE WAS A THIRD ASTRONAUT.
Tom looks shocked.
Mr. Fullerman says, TOM PAY ATTENTION.
Tom says, YES, SIR, I AM.
Tom says to himself, TO THE FLY.
On Mr. Fullerman’s head, the fly twitches, then sits up. The fly leaves Mr. Fullerman’s head and flies towards a window, but smacks into the glass of the window. Mr. Fullerman walks to the window with a cup and captures the fly.
Mr. Fullerman says, GOTCHA.
ALL RIGHT, BUZZ OFF.
Mr. Fullerman opens the window further and releases the fly.
The fly says, THANKS SO MUCH.
Tom says, SEE YA.
Mr. Fullerman says, VERY WELL.
UMM, WHERE ARE WE?
OH, YES. ON THE MOON,
THERE WAS A THIRD ASTRONAUT.
Tom says, I THINK I KNOW
WHERE HE'S OFF TO.
IT'S TIME TO DRAW IT
(Funky music plays)
Tom says, IT'S LIZ!
SHE WRITES AND DRAWS ALL
THE TOM GATES BOOKS.
A woman with long, brown hair and bangs wears a pink shirt. She sits at a table with a large paper pad, containers of markers as well as a paper cup.
She says, THIS IS A PAPER CUP.
Liz grabs the cup.
She says, I'M GOING TO DRAW AROUND IT
BECAUSE IT'S PERFECT
FOR DRAWING FACES.
Liz places the cup upside down on the paper.
She says, I'M GOING TO TAKE A PEN.
YOU CAN USE A PENCIL
IF YOU WANT.
I'M GOING TO DRAW AROUND IT.
Liz draws a circle by tracing the cup.
She says, YOU DON'T HAVE
TO USE PAPER CUP.
YOU CAN USE ANYTHING
THAT TO DRAW AROUND AT ALL.
THAT'S CIRCULAR.
In a time lapse, Liz draws two more circles using the cup.
She says, I'M GOING TO TRY
AND MAKE A PATTERN,
BECAUSE THE STYLE
OF DOODLING THAT TOM DOES
IS PERFECT FOR PATTERNS.
Liz completes her drawing of 8 circles. 7 of the circles are close together in a curve with the 8th in the centre.
Liz says, I'M GOING TO SWAP PENS.
LET'S SEE IF WE
CAN DRAW MR FULLERMAN.
MR. FULLERMAN'S BIG BEADY EYES.
Liz starts drawing Mr. Fullerman in the centre circle.
Liz says, WHO SHOULD WE DRAW NOW?
LET'S DRAW AMY.
THAT'S ONE OF TOM'S CLASSMATE'S.
Liz draws Amy in the circle directly below Mr. Fullerman. Liz draws Tom to the right of Amy.
Tom says, LOVE IT!
Liz says, DEREK KIND OF GOT
A SIMILAR HAIRSTYLE TO TOM,
ONLY IT'S THE OTHER WAY.
Liz draws Derek to the left of Amy.
Liz says, FLORENCE IS ALSO IN TOM'S CLASS.
LET'S DRAW MARCUS.
LET'S DRAW,
LET'S DRAW SOLID.
HIS FRIENDS CALL HIM SOLID.
AND THEN WE'RE GOING
TO DRAW LEROY.
Liz draws Florence to the left of Derek, Marcus to the right of Tom, Solid above Marcus and Leroy above Florence.
Liz says, RIGHT!
NOW, I'VE DRAWN
ALL THOSE CHARACTERS,
NOW I'M GOING
TO JOIN THEM ALL UP.
THE GREAT THING
ABOUT THIS STYLE
OF DOODLING IS
IT'S REALLY GOOD
TO SORT OF COVER AND DECORATE
WHOLE BIG PATTERNS.
SO THAT'S I'M GOING TO DO NOW.
Tom says, WOW!
NOW, I AM EXCITED.
Liz says, I'M GOING TO JOIN UP
ALL THE LITTLE
DIFFERENT PIECES OF DRAWING
BY ADDING THOSE LOVELY CURVED
LINES THAT I LIKE DOING SO MUCH.
WE MIGHT ADD A FEW MORE
STARS IN HERE AND THERE.
Liz adds doodles of curved lines and stars around the drawings of the different characters.
Liz says, AND I MAKE THEM ALL
GO OUT, LIKE THAT.
The star doodles shoot outwards.
Liz asks, CAN YOU SEE HOW
THE PATTERN IS BUILDING UP?
Liz fills the excess space on the paper with curved lines. She adds a doubled lines border to the paper and adds a design.
She says, I THINK IT'S VERY
BLACK AND WHITE THIS DRAWING,
SO I'M GOING TO ADD
A LITTLE BIT MORE
BLACK HAIR AND THERE JUST
REALLY MAKE THINGS STAND OUT.
LOOKS REALLY COMPLICATED,
BUT IT REALLY ISN'T.
Liz makes some of the lines on different parts of her doodles thicker. The doodles pop out more.
Liz says, IT'S VERY EASY TO DO.
YEAH,
I THINK THAT'S DONE.
I'VE FINISHED IT.
NOW OBVIOUSLY,
I'VE DONE A LOT OF DOODLING,
BUT I'M JUST
SHOWING YOU THE PATTERN
AND HOW YOU CAN
BUILD UP THE DESIGN.
TO COVER A WHOLE PAGE
AND THEN YOU CAN ADD
COLOUR AND IF YOU WANT TO.
BUT I THINK I'M GOING
TO LEAVE IT LIKE THIS.
Liz smiles. The doodles pop off the paper.
People sing, WELCOME
TO MY BRILLIANT SHOW!
The fly buzzes over Tom as he walks into a house. The fly follows Tom inside.
Tom says, THIS IS MY HOUSE
AND THERE'S ONE THING
HERE THAT REALLY BUGS ME,
AND IT'S NOT THE FLY.
The fly rests on a curtain. Tom sits on a couch.
He says, IT'S MY BIG SISTER…
Delia walks past the room.
Tom says, …DELIA.
Delia returns and peaks into the room.
Tom says, SHE'S ALWAYS GRUMPY.
Delia messes up Tom’s hair.
Delia says, NICE HAIR TOM!
Delia laughs. Tom fixes his hair.
He says, UNLESS SHE'S ANNOYING ME.
THAT DOES MAKE HER QUITE HAPPY,
BUT I CAN BE ANNOYING, TOO.
I THINK IT’S TIME TO…
Tom goes to a room and closes its door. On the door is a sign that reads, make it!
Tom says, …MAKE IT!
LET'S MAKE SOME WOLLY MONSTERS!
Different coloured arrows point to a red monster.
Tom says, YOU NEED A CARDBOARD,
TUBE, SOME SCISSORS.
A monster appears holding a sign that reads, be careful with scissors! On a surface is a long cardboard tube and a pair of scissors.
The monster says, BE CAREFUL WITH SCISSORS!
Tom says, AND SOME COLORFUL WOOL.
Red wool is added to the cardboard tube and scissors.
A bug says, AND THE GLUE STICK?
Tom says, SORRY,
WE DON'T NEED A STICK.
The bug says, OH. ALRIGHT.
The bug leaves, dragging away a glue stick.
Tom says, AWKWARD!
(Upbeat music plays)
An orange monster holds a timer that fills with the colour yellow as time passes.
Tom says, GOT ALL THAT?
LET'S GET MAKING!
With a honk, the timer is full.
Tom says, TAKE YOUR CARDBOARD TUBE
AND CUT IT IN HALF.
SO YOU HAVE TWO
SMALLER TUBES, LIKE THIS.
The long cardboard two is separated into two short tubes.
Tom says, SNIP OFF A LENGTH OF WOOL
AND TIE THE TUBES TOGETHER.
The wool ties the tubes together around their middle.
Tom says, THEN WRAP LOTS
AND LOTS OF ROUND THE TUBES
UNTIL THEY LOOK LIKE THIS.
Extra wool is wrapped around the middle of the tubes.
Tom says, SLIPPING ENOUGH
A BIT OF WOOL AND TIE
A LOOSE KNOT AROUND THE WALL
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TWO TUBES.
A piece of wool is wrapped around the wool that’s wrapped around the wool in the middle of the tubes.
Tom says, THEN SLIDE OUT THE TUBES
AND TIGHTEN THE KNOT TO MAKE
A SORT OF BOW LIKE THIS!
The tubes are removed from the wool and the wool holding the wrapped wool together like a bow is tightened.
Tom says, NOW, SNIP EACH SIDE OF THE BOW,
CUTTING ALL THE LOOPS
IN THE WOOL.
CUT OFF THE EXCESS WOOL
AND RUFFLE IT OUT
TO GET YOUR POMPOMS SHAPE.
The loops of wool on the ends of the bow are cut along with the excess wool. The wool is fluffed until it looks like a pompom.
Tom says, PUT ON SOME EYES
AND A MOUTH
AND YOU HAVE
YOUR WOOLLY MONSTER!
Eyes and a mouth are added to the pompom.
The woolly monster says, GRRRR!
Tom says, YOU CAN MAKE THEM IN LOTS
OF DIFFERENT COLOURS
AT ANY SIZE YOU LIKE!
Other woolly monsters made from different coloured wool with different eyes and mouths join the red woolly monster. The monsters growl and chuckle.
People sing, WELCOME
TO MY BRILLIANT SHOW!
Text reads, The Brilliant World of Tom Gates.
Tom says, GREAT!
I KNOW EXACTLY WHERE I'M GOING
TO DO WITH THIS WOOLLY MONSTER.
Tom holds out his red woolly monster. He knocks on a door with one hand behind his back. Delia answers the door and Tom dangles his monster in front of her. Tom makes growling noises. Delia doesn’t react.
Tom says, WHOA!
Delia sighs and slams her door closed.
Tom says, OH.
Outside, Tom walks to a fence with the fly flying behind him.
Tom says, THIS IS MY BEST FRIEND,
DEREK'S HOUSE.
IT'S RIGHT NEXT TO MINE.
Tom and Derek sit on a blue couch.
Derek says, HI TOM!
Tom says, HI DEREK!
The friends high five. The fly buzzes past them and lands on a record player but is captured by a cup.
A person says, CAUGHT YA!
The fly says, NOT AGAIN.
Tom says, GOOD CATCH, MR FINGEL.
Mr. Fringel carries the record and cup holding the fly.
Tom says, THAT'S DEREK'S DAD, MR FINGEL.
Mr. Fringle releases the fly through a window but the fly re-enters.
Mr. Fringle says, REMINDS ME
OF A GREAT BAND!
Derek says, UH OH! DAD'S GETTING
HIS OLD RECORDS OUT AGAIN.
Mr. Fringle says, THIS ONE'S A CLASSIC!
Tom says, HE ALWAYS SAYS THAT.
Mr. Fringle blows on a record.
He says, IT'S 'WHAT
ARE YOU GOING TO DO'
BY RECYCLED PLASTIC CUP.
The fly lands on the record on the player that starts to turn the record. The fly rides the turning record.
The fly says, WOAH!
Tom says, IT'S TIME FOR,
SING IT!
(Groovy music plays)
The fly dances while wearing sunglasses and holding a microphone. Tom, Amy and Marcus watch with their jaws dropped. Mr. Fullerman has his arms crossed.
The fly sings, SOMETIMES I LOOK
AT MY VERY OWN REFLECTION
BEFORE I REALIZE
THAT GREY IS MY COMPLEXION.
WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO ABOUT IT?
Others join and watch the fly perform. Fly back up dancers join the fly. The flies perform on Mr. Fullerman’s head. The audience dances.
The fly sings, WE RE PLASTIC CUP NOT THE
FASHIONABLY BEST DRESSED
WE SING THE SONGS
THAT GUARANTEE TO DEPRESS.
WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO ABOUT IT?
The fly whispers, NOTHING.
The fly sings, WHO OH OH OH OH OH!
WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO?
The fly knocks over a glass of water.
The fly sings, WHO OH OH OH OH OH!
WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO?
WE ARE THE BAND
THAT IS HUGELY INFLUENTIAL
OUR SECOND ALBUM
WAS MOSTLY INSTRUMENTAL.
WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO ABOUT IT?
Tom and Amy dance.
The fly whispers, NOTHING
The fly sings, WE ARE THE BAND
ON THE EDGE OF A DISASTER.
WE CAN T AGREE IF OUR SONGS
COULD BE MUCH FASTER.
WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO ABOUT IT?
Tom and Derek follow the fly with their eyes as it spins on the record player.
The fly whispers, NOTHING.
The fly sings, WHO OH OH OH OH OH!
WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO?
WHO OH OH OH OH OH!
Mr. Fullerman joins the dancing as the fly performs on his head.
The fly sings, WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO?
WHO OH OH OH OH OH!
A doodle of Mr. Fullerman sings with the fly.
The fly sings, WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO?
WHO OH OH OH OH OH!
The fly escapes capture.
The fly sings, WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO?
WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO?
WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO?
WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO?

WE ARE THE BAND
THAT IS HUGELY INFLUENTIAL
OUR SECOND ALBUM
WAS MOSTLY INSTRUMENTAL.
WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO ABOUT IT?
Tom and Amy dance.
The fly whispers, NOTHING
The fly sings, WE ARE THE BAND
ON THE EDGE OF A DISASTER.
WE CAN T AGREE IF OUR SONGS
COULD BE MUCH FASTER.
WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO ABOUT IT?
Tom and Derek follow the fly with their eyes as it spins on the record player.
The fly whispers, NOTHING.
The fly sings, WHO OH OH OH OH OH!
WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO?
WHO OH OH OH OH OH!
Mr. Fullerman joins the dancing as the fly performs on his head.
The fly sings, WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO?
WHO OH OH OH OH OH!
A doodle of Mr. Fullerman sings with the fly.
The fly sings, WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO?
WHO OH OH OH OH OH!
The fly escapes capture.
The fly sings, WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO?
WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO?
WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO?
WHATCHA GONNA DO,
WHATCHA GONNA DO?
The fly says, NOTHING.
