DOG ZOMBIES PLAY IT.
DOODLE MONSTER,
FURRY CREATURE.
DRAW A PICTURE
OF MY TEACHER.

Black, white and colourful doodles reveal the adventures of different people and creatures.

People sings, I LIKE WAFERS
THEY RE THE BEST!

The singer sings, MARCUS MELDREW’S
NOT IMPRESSED.

A boy with curly hair crosses his arms.

The singer sings, GRANNIE'S CUSTARD'S VERY
LUMPY, DELIA IS ALWAYS GRUMPY.

A girl with long hair and sunglasses crosses her arms and frowns.

The singer sings, I'M TOM GATES,
THAT'S MY NAME
SO JOIN IN WITH
MY FAVOURITE GAMES.
GET READY
BECAUSE HERE WE GO.
WELCOME TO
MY BRILLIANT SHOW.

Over different doodles and drawings, text reads, The Brilliant World of Tom Gates, created by Liz Pichon.

Tom says, IN THIS BRILLIANT SHOW,
FIND OUT WHAT’S IN
THE DOODLE BOX.
TAKE TO THE SKIES WITH
A TOM GATES KITE,
AND I GO HIKING
FOR SOME TASTY SNACKS.

People sing, WELCOME TO
MY BRILLIANT SHOW.

(Chimes)

Tom says, HI! I'VE GOT
BIG PLANS TODAY!
BIG PLANS TO WATCH TV.
AND DO NOTHING ELSE.

Tom lounges on a couch in a living room. His dad Frank opens a door to the living room.

Dad says, TOM, HOW DO YOU FANCY
GOING OUT FOR A NICE LONG WALK?

Tom says, I'M A BIT BUSY.

Dad says, OH.

Tom’s mom Rita joins her husband in the doorway.

She says, C'MON TOM IT WOULD
BE GOOD TO GET SOME FRESH AIR.

Tom says, MY MUM AND DAD ARE
OBSESSED WITH FRESH AIR.
I JUST DON'T SEE WHY
WE HAVE TO GO SO FAR TO GET IT.

Tom imagines him and his family walking up a mountain with wind blowing and his teeth chattering.

Tom says, PRETTY SURE THERE'S SOME
FRESH AIR IN THE GARDEN.

Mum says, C'MON TOM IT'LL BE FUN.
UNCLE KEVIN SAID HE COULD
PICK YOU UP ON THE WAY.

Tom says, UNCLE KEVIN?
THAT MEANS THE
COUSINS WILL BE GOING,
AND THEY ALWAYS
HAVE EXCELLENT SNACKS!

Tom imagines himself beside his uncle, who smiles. Tom’s identical cousins frown and cross their arms. Different sugary treats rain down over them.

Tom cheers, WOO HOO! YEAH!

Tom surfs down a hill of snacks.

He says, YES! I'LL GO.

Tom runs out of the living room.

Dad says, OH! I'M GLAD HE'S
KEEN TO GET A BIT OF FRESH AIR.

Mum says, HMMM, I THINK HE'S KEEN
ON GETTING SOME FRESH SNACKS.

Tom says, IF YOU EVER
FIND YOURSELF
GETTING A LITTLE
TOO MUCH FRESH AIR,
THEN YOU MIGHT NEED A
TOM GATES KITE!

Tom says, IT'S TIME TO MAKE-IT!
LET'S MAKE A TOM GATES KITE!
YOU WILL NEED:
A PIECE OF COLOURED PAPER.
TWO STICKS OF DIFFERENT LENGTHS.
A RULER, A PEN.
SOME STICKY TAPE.
AND SOME STRING.

On a purple surface is a yellow piece of paper, two different length sticks, a ruler, marker, tape and white string.

A bug asks, AND A GLUE STICK?

The bug carries a glue stick.

Tom says, SORRY,
WE DON'T NEED A GLUE STICK.

The bug frowns and says, AWW ALRIGHT.

The bug drags the glue stick away.

Tom says, AWKWARD.

A green monster holds a ticking timer that fills with the colour blue as time passes.

Tom says, GOT ALL THAT?
LETS GET MAKING!

A bell rings when the timer is full.

Tom says, TAKE YOUR STICKS AND LAY THEM
ACROSS ONE ANOTHER LIKE THIS.

The shorter stick is laid horizontally a third of the length down the longer stick that lies vertically.

Tom says, AND SNIP OFF A LENGTH OF STRING.

A monster doodle appears with a sign that reads, be careful with scissors.

The monster says, BE CAREFUL
WITH SCISSORS!

Tom says, AND TIE
THE STICKS TOGETHER
IN THE MIDDLE LIKE THIS.

A long piece of string is tied around the two sticks where they connect.

Tom says, LAY YOUR PIECE OF PAPER
UNDER THE STICKS
AND CUT DIAGONALLY FROM
EDGE TO EDGE LIKE THIS.

Paper is cut from diagonal lines connecting each end of the sticks, while leaving extra space around the stick ends. This creates the shape needed for a kite.

Tom says, THEN AT EACH POINT FOLD
THE EXCESS PAPER OVER LIKE THIS.

The extra space left over is folded onto each stick end.

Tom says, THEN FOLD THE REST OF
THE PAPER OVER LIKE THIS.

About an inch of the remaining paper is folded over.

Tom says, NOW STICK IT ALL
TOGETHER WITH YOUR TAPE!

The folded paper is taped down.

Tom says, TAKE ANOTHER
PIECE OF STRING
AND TIE IT ROUND
THE SHORTER STICK LIKE THIS.

A small piece of string tied onto the horizontal stick on either side of the vertical stick. Enough string is used to let some hang.

Tom says, THEN TIE A REALLY LONG
PIECE OF STRING TO THAT.
TURN YOUR KITE OVER AND
DRAW ON ANY DESIGN YOU LIKE!

A long piece of string is tied to the shorter, hanging string. The kite is flipped over and doodles are added.

Tom says, I'M GOING TO DOODLE
SOME BUGS AND MONSTERS!
YOU CAN ADD STRIPS OF
COLOURED PAPER TO YOUR STRING
TO CREATE SOME RIBBONS!
AWESOME!
AND THERE YOU HAVE YOUR
VERY OWN TOM GATES KITE!

Yellow and red strips of paper are added to the long piece of string.

Tom says, YOU CAN USE ANY COLOURS
OR DESIGNS YOU LIKE!
ALL YOU NEED NOW IS SOME WIND.
AND OFF WE GO!

Different examples of different coloured kites with different designs are laid out.

People sing, WELCOME
TO MY BRILLIANT SHOW!

Text reads, The Brilliant World of Tom Gates. Outside Tom’s house, a kite flies in the air as wind blows. Inside, Tom zips up a jacket.

Mum says, TOM, DON'T YOU WANT
TO EAT SOMETHING BEFORE YOU GO?
YOU WILL NEED PLENTY
OF ENERGY FOR YOUR WALK.

Tom says, NO THANKS MUM,
I'M NOT HUNGRY.

Mum says, HMMM.

Tom comments, ACTUALLY I WANT TO LEAVE
AS MUCH ROOM AS POSSIBLE,
FOR THE AMAZING SNACKS
MY COUSINS WILL HAVE.

Dad says, HUH, ENJOY
THE FRESH AIR TOM!

Dad waves and tries to take a snack from Mum. Mum slaps Dad’s hand away.

Tom says, WHAT? OH YEAH,
FRESH AIR!
CAN'T WAIT!

Tom’s stomach growls. Tom smiles.

He says, DRAW IT!

(Upbeat music plays)

Tom says, IT'S LIZ!
SHE WRITES AND DRAWS
ALL THE TOM GATES BOOKS!

A woman with long, brown hair and bangs wears a yellow shirt. She sits at a desk with a large piece of paper and containers of pens and markers.

She says, NOW LET'S SEE,
WHATS IN THE BOX.

Liz pulls out a box with Tom’s drawing on the top and other doodle designs.

Tom says, I LOVE THIS BIT!

Liz says, AND, DRUMROLL....

Liz opens the box.

She says, …IT'S A WELLIE!

In the box is a green rain boot with different lines and a circle on the side. Liz laughs.

She says, OKAY, LET'S SEE
WHAT WE CAN DO WITH THIS.

Liz holds the rain boot.

She says, GOT THE WELLIE BOOT.
ALWAYS GET ADULT PERMISSION
BEFORE YOU DRAW ON ANYTHING,
ESPECIALLY A WELLIE BOOT.
NEXT, I'M GOING TO USE
A PERMANENT MARKER.
AND AGAIN, WATCH YOUR FINGERS.
SO LOOKING AT THIS WELLIE BOOT.
YOU CAN SEE
THIS ONE HAPPENS TO HAVE
A BIT OF A PATTERN ON IT
ALREADY, LIKE ITS GOT A CIRCLE.
YOU CAN DRAW ON ANY WELLIE BOOT,
IT DOESN'T HAVE
TO BE THIS PATTERN.
BUT I'M GOING
TO USE THIS PATTERN
AS PART OF MY DESIGN.
I THINK I WILL DRAW AN EYE.
BECAUSE IT LOOKS
LIKE AN EYE ALREADY.

Liz draws on the boot with the permanent marker.

She says, AND I'M GOING TO
PRESS MY PEN AND GO
RIGHT INTO THE GROOVE THERE.
IT'S VERY HANDY HAVING THIS!
I WILL DO THE SAME
ON THE OUTSIDE.

Liz draws an eye on the circle.

She says, LOOKING AT THE TOP...
I THINK I MIGHT DRAW SOME TEETH.

Tom says, LOVE IT!

Liz starts adding teeth to one side of the boot.

She says, IT'S ALMOST
LIKE A MOUTH ALREADY.
SO I AM GOING TO DRAW
A LINE LIKE THAT.

Liz continues the line of the mouth across to the other side of the boot.

She says, AND THEN DRAW SOME SHARP TEETH.

Liz adds teeth to the line across the boot.

She says, THE TEETH GET BIGGER
AS YOU GO ALONG.

In a time-lapse, Liz colours in the bottom teeth with the marker, leaving the top teeth the colour of the boot.

She says, WHAT I AM DOING IS, I AM
LEAVING THE TEETH GREEN.
AND I AM COLOURING IN
THE SPACE BEHIND IT
SO THE TEETH STAND OUT.

Liz continues colouring in the teeth.

She says, RIGHT,
LET'S DO THE OTHER EYE.

Liz draws a second eye in the circle on the other side of the boot.

She says, I MEAN, CROCODILES DON'T
REALLY HAVE EYES LIKE THIS.
I'M JUST MAKING IT UP.

Liz adds extra doodle details to the eyes.

She says, THAT LOOKS GOOD TO ME.
NOW,
I'M JUST GOING
TO ADD SOME SNOUT NOSTRILS.

Liz adds nostrils to her crocodile-like boot design as well as other details that make the boot appear more like a crocodile.

She says, FIERCE FEET.

Liz adds shading to lines of the design.

Tom says, WOW THAT'S COOL!

Liz says, PESKY WELLIES.
THESE ARE GOING TO LOOK GREAT!

Liz adds further shading to the design.

Liz says, NEARLY DONE.
LET'S DO THE TOP.

Liz draws a bird on top of the crocodiles head on either side of the boot.

She says, MIGHT BE AN IDEA,
IF YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT DRAWING
STRAIGHT ON THE WELLIE,
YOU CAN ALWAYS DO A SKETCH,
AND WORK OUT EXACTLY
WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO,
BEFORE YOU DO GO ON TO THE
WELLIE AND DO THE DRAWING.

Liz draws a bug by the crocodile’s snout.

She says, THERE YOU GO,
THAT'S MY DOODLED ON WELLIE!

(Chimes)

Two rainboots with the same crocodile design are laid out. Their doodles come to life and the birds fly off the boots.

Tom says, AWW THANKS LIZ,
THAT WAS GREAT!

People sing, WELCOME
TO MY BRILLIANT SHOW!

Text reads, The Brilliant World of Tom Gates. Birds fly through the sky.

Tom says, I'M OFF FOR SNACKS, UM...

Cars drive on a street.

Tom says, …I MEAN FRESH AIR, WITH MY
AUNTIE, UNCLE AND COUSINS.

Tom sits in the middle seat of a car behind his Uncle and Auntie.

Uncle Kevin asks, READY FOR
SOME GOOD OLE FRESH AIR TOM?

Tom says, AND A SNACK!

He comments to himself, JUST TO REMIND THEM
WHY I'M REALLY HERE.

Uncle Kevin says, OKAY TOM, WE WILL
HAVE A SNACK WHEN WE GET THERE.

Tom scratches the back of his head.

Tom says, SORRY, I AM JUST
EXCITED ABOUT SNACKS.

Auntie Alice says, WELL
WE ARE JUST EXCITED
TO HAVE YOU HERE WITH US.

Tom looks at his cousins straight faces.

Tom says, THEY DON'T LOOK EXCITED.

Tom’s cousins cross their arms and groan. They frown.

Tom says, PROBABLY DON'T WANT TO
SHARE THE SNACKS.

Tom’s stomach rumbles. Birds chirp in a forest.

Uncle Kevin says, RIGHT,
BEFORE WE SET OFF,
WHO'S READY FOR A SNACK?

Tom grins as Auntie Alice unzips a bag.

Tom cheers, ME!

He comments to himself, IN CASE THEY
DIDN'T KNOW ALREADY.

Auntie Alice says, HERE WE GO BOYS.

Auntie Alice hands Tom three snack bags. Tom hands a bag to both his cousins as birds chirp. Tom shrugs.

He says, CHOCOLATE RAISINS,
MY FAVOURITE.

In slow motion, Tom closes his eyes and drops a chocolate in his mouth in a dreamy state.

Auntie Alice says, NO TOM,
GRANNY MAVIS MADE US
SOME HEALTHY SNACKS.
TO BRING WITH US ON OUR WALK.

Tom snaps out of his dreamy state.

Uncle Kevin says, CHOCOLATE COVERED
PEAS ARE SURPRISINGLY
DELICIOUS.
AREN'T THEY TOM?

Tom’s cousins crack a smile as they watch Tom, whose jaw has dropped. Tom imagines green peas escaping from their chocolate shell.

Tom says, CHOCOLATE COVERED PEAS?

Tom shakes his head. His cheeks turn green.

He says, EUGH!
I THINK I'D PREFER
SOME FRESH AIR.

The peas laugh.
