He says, HI EVERYBODY.
I'M KALU.
I'M CANADIAN-LIBERIAN AND I'M
MI'KMAQ ON MY MOM'S SIDE.
THE MI'KMAQ ARE THE FIRST
NATIONS PEOPLE IN THIS REGION.
I THINK IT'S REALLY COOL TO BE
BLACK AND FIRST NATIONS.
AND WELCOME TO MY HOUSE.
COME ON IN.
Kalu enters the house. Inside, he sits on a couch beside a girl with curly brown hair and a woman with curly blond and brown hair. The woman picks up a puppy.

WE LIVE IN BRIDGEWATER, NOVA
SCOTIA.
NEAR HALIFAX.
A map shows the location of Nova Scotia.
Kalu says, BRIDGEWATER IS WHERE MY MOM AND
FAMILY WAS BORN.
HALIFAX IS THE CAPITAL OF NOVA
SCOTIA.
The sun shines over a lighthouse.
Kalu says, I THINK IT'S DEFINITELY ONE OF
THE BEST PLACES TO LIVE BECAUSE
IT'S SO PEACEFUL AND FUN.
I ALSO LOVE TO MAKE THINGS WITH
MY HANDS.
I'VE MADE A STAND FOR MY
GRANDMOTHER'S FLOWERS WITH A
BUNCH OF CARPENTER TOOLS AND
I'VE MADE A PULL OUT DRAWER FOR
MY SISTER'S JEWELLERY.
A FUN WAY TO SAY HI IN MADINGO
IS TAMA TELAY.
IT'S THE LANGUAGE OF LIBERIA.
TAMA TELAY.
Kalu waves. A flag is displayed.
Kalu says, THE LIBERIAN FLAG IS SOMETIMES
CALLED THE LONE STAR.
IT LOOKS SIMILAR TO THE FLAG OF
THE UNITED STATES HAVING SIMILAR
WHITE STRIPES, A BLUE SQUARE AND
WHITE STARS IN THE CORNER.
LIBERIA WAS ACTUALLY FOUNDED BY
FORMER BLACK SLAVES FROM UNITED
STATES AND THE CARIBBEAN.
Kalu holds a globe ball.
He says, HERE'S LIBERIA.
He points to Liberia on the globe. Liberia is shown on the map.
Kalu says, WOW.
LIBERIA'S OVER 6000 KILOMETRES
AWAY FROM BRIDGEWATER.
A line connects Liberia to Nova Scotia on the map.
Kalu says, WOW.
ALL THAT WATER BETWEEN US MAKES
ME WANT TO GO SWIMMING.
He walks to a building with his mom, sister, and others. Text on the building reads, Lifestyle Centre.
Inside, Kalu says, I LOVE TO SWIM WITH MY FRIENDS
AND FAMILY WHENEVER I CAN.
OKAY.
LET'S GO.
In a pool, kids pull on goggles.
Kalu says, WHEN YOU'RE LEARNING TO SWIM YOU
NEED TO REMEMBER THAT ONE OF THE
MOST IMPORTANT THINGS IS TO BE
SURE TO HAVE AN ADULT OR A
LIFEGUARD AROUND THE POOL BEFORE
YOU JUMP IN THE POOL.
A lifeguard watches the kids swim.
Kalu says, NEXT UP.
GET COMFORTABLE BLOWING BUBBLES
WHEN YOU BREATHE OUT TO SWIM.
ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU JUMP
UNDERWATER.
The kids jump in the pool.
Kalu says, HOLD YOUR BREATH THEN EXHALE
WHEN YOU COME TO THE SURFACE.
UNDERSTANDING HOW TO BE CALM AND
RELAXED IN THE WATER IS
IMPORTANT TOO.
The kids swim underwater.
Kalu says, PLUS, IT MEANS I CAN GO OUT IN
THE WATER EVEN MORE NOW THAT I'M
BECOMING SUCH A GREAT SWIMMER.
Elsewhere, Kalu says, WHEN I'M NOT PLAYING SPORTS OR
DOING HOMEWORK, I ALSO LIKE TO
PLAY MANCALA WITH MY AFTER
SCHOOL GROUP THAT BRINGS BLACK
AND INDIGENOUS KIDS TOGETHER.
Kids play mancala together.
Kalu says, IT'S A VERY OLD GAME.
IT'S PRECISE ORIGINS ARE UNKNOWN
BUT THE MANCALA GAME HAS BEEN
PLAYED OVER 3600 YEARS AGO IN
ANCIENT GHANA AND SUDAN.
SOME MANCALA VARIATIONS HAVE
MADE THEIR WAY OVER HERE VIA
AFRICAN ANCESTORS THAT WERE
TAKEN IN THE TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE
TRADE.
MANCALA MEANS TO MOVE.
IT CAN BE PLAYED WITH 2 PLAYERS
WHERE EACH PERSON GETS A TURN.
Kalu plays the game with his sister.
He says, YOU HAVE TO USE MATH AND
COUNTING TO GET THE MOST PIECES
ON THIS SPOT IN THE BOARD.
Kalu points to a dish where pebbles are collected.
He says, WATCH HOW I BEAT MY SISTER IN 2
MOVES.
His sister says, HEY!
Kalu drops pebbles in the small dishes in the board. His last remaining pebble goes in the larger dish.
He says, POINT.
In a kitchen, Kalu says, NOW MY MOM AND I ARE GOING TO
TEACH YOU HOW TO MAKE GROUND PEA
SOUP.
IN LIBERIA THEY GRIND BOILED
PEANUTS BUT WE USE PEANUT
BUTTER.
IT'S ONE OF MY FAVOURITE
LIBERIAN FOODS.
Kalu’s mom stands behind him in the kitchen.
Kalu says, IT'S GOT SO MUCH MEAT AND
VEGETABLES IT'S TECHNICALLY
DINNER IN A BOWL.
FIRST YOU NEED A BIG SOUP POT.
OH LOOK.
IT CAN FIT ON MY HEAD AS A HAT.
He holds a large pot over his head.
Kalu says, FIRST YOU NEED TO FRY THE
VEGETABLES.
PROBABLY GET AN ADULT TO HELP.
Kalu’s mom adds a bowl of sliced vegetables to the pot on their stove. The animated sun smells the pot. Kalu’s mom stirs the vegetables.
Kalu says, THEN YOU ADD THE MEAT AND THE
SOUP STOCK.
He adds meet and soup stock to the pot.
Kalu says, AND NOW FOR THE PART THAT MAKES
IT EXTRA TASTY.
YOU ADD PEANUT BUTTER AND LET IT
MELT INTO THE SOUP.
He adds peanut butter. His mom places a lid over the pot. Kalu sits at their kitchen island with his mom and bowls of ground pea soup.
Kalu says, IT'S TIME TO EAT.
He and his mom take a bite of their food.
Kalu says, MMM.
LIBERIAN FOOD IS THE BEST.
The animated sun gives a thumbs up. Kalu has another bite. The animated sun bursts out of a gift box and blows a party horn. Text reads, Sunny’s Surprise! In a video, Kalu’s mom and dad stand beside each other.
His mom says, OUR SON, KALU, IS AN EXCEPTIONAL
BOY WITH THE KINDEST HEART AND
SO MUCH TALENT.
Kalu’s dad says, WE ARE SO PROUD OF HIS DAILY
ACCOMPLISHMENTS AT SCHOOL AND AT
HOME WE BELIEVE THIS MESSAGE
WILL INSPIRE HIM TO DO EVEN
BETTER.
Back in the kitchen, Kalu’s mom says, OKAY KALU.
I HAVE A SURPRISE
FOR YOU FOR DESSERT.
Kalu asks, WHAT IS IT?
His mom says, I'LL SHOW YOU.
Kalu says, I'M GONNA CLOSE MY EYES.
He covers his eyes. His mom places a tablet in front of him.
Kalu says, I AM TEMPTED.
He opens his eyes and taps the screen. In a video, a man with black hair and a neatly trimmed beard wears a grey sweater.
The man says, HI KALU.

I WAS A MEMBER OF TEAM CANADA'S
OLYMPIC TEAM IN 2004 AND 2008.
A picture of Richard running on a track is displayed.

YOU LATER KALU, BYE
Kalu looks amazed.
He says, WOW.

Kalu’s mom says, YOU'RE WELCOME.
Elsewhere, various stools and carpentry supplies fill a space.
Kalu says, ANOTHER PERSON WHO REALLY
INSPIRES ME IS MY GRANDFATHER.
Kalu wears a tool belt. Beside him, his grandfather wears a blue shirt and green hat.
Kalu says, BECAUSE OF HIM I WANT TO BECOME
A PROFESSIONAL CARPENTER.
He works with a piece of wood.
He says, I LOVE WOOD WORKING.
Kalu’s grandfather says, LOOKING GOOD KALU.
Kalu says, THANK YOU.
His grandfather helps hold two pieces of wood in place while Kalu twists in a screw.
Kalu says, THIS PIECE IS ALMOST DONE.
I'M GONNA USE PAINT
TO FINISH IT UP.
