[Bright music plays]
A person says, WHEE!
Text reads, tvokids + Apartment 11 Productions Original.
[Giggling]
[Cheerful music plays]
Lisa and Shakira stand on a sidewalk outside a house wearing white shirts and carrying backpacks.
Shakira says, COME ON KYLE, LET'S GO.
Lisa says, CANT BE LATE FOR
OUR FIRST DAY BACK!
Kyle walks out of the house with a backpack wearing a white shirt and blsck pants that are too small. Lisa and Monica share a look.
Kyle says, WHAT?
He looks at his uniform.
[Shakira giggling]
Kyle says, SCHOOL UNIFORM MUST HAVE
JUST GOTTEN SMALL OR SOMETHING.
Lisa says, I KNOW AN EIGHT GRADER NAMED
ADRIAN WHO'S GOT A GREAT IDEA.
ORGANIZE A
CLOTHING SWAP PARTY...
Shakira says, …AND REUSE UNIFORMS
FROM OLDER STUDENTS.
Kyle nods and says, COOL.
Shakira says to him, YOU LOOK GREAT.
The three Green Squad members walk down the sidewalk together.
[Upbeat music plays]
In the opening credits, the five Green Squad friends pose. They each open bags that carry different emojis.
Eric has long, black hair, and carries gardening emojis. Lisa has long, tightly braided black hair and carries food and cooking themed emojis. Blond haired Sigfried carries activism themed emojis. Shakira has long, black hair and carries craft themed emojis. Kyle, who has short black hair, has different modes of transportation emojis.
The Green Squad friends dance and pose as text appears that reads, TVO Kids Presents.
A person reading the title says, GREEN SQUAD.
In a kitchen, a boy with dark, curly brown hair wears a blue polo shirt.
He says, HI, I'M ADRIAN.
I'M 12 YEARS OLD.
I LIVE WITH MY MOM.
SHE'S FROM MEXICO AND MY DAD
WHO'S FROM IRAN AND MY DOG
RAFFI.
Adrian sits at a dining room table with his family.
He says, I SPEAK ENGLISH,
FRENCH, PERSIAN AND SPANISH.
HOLA.
Adrian opens his closet.
He says, IN A WEEK I'LL BE
STARTING EIGHTH GRADE.
Clothes are put on a bed.
Adrian says, BACK TO SCHOOL MEANS BUYING NEW
CLOTHES, BUYING NEW STUFF FOR
SCHOOL, BUYING SCHOOL
SUPPLIES, BUYING BOOKS.
I'D REALLY LIKE TO FIND A WAY TO
REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF STUFF WE'RE
BUYING FOR BACK TO SCHOOL.
Adrian gets in the back of a car.
He says, I THINK THAT USING A CAR TO GET
TO SCHOOL ISN'T THE BEST IDEA
BECAUSE IT DOES PRODUCE A
LOT OF CARBON, AND POLLUTES.
The car is driven down the driveway. Text reads, Carbon Dioxide. In the kitchen, Adrian opens the fridge.
He says, A LOT OF PEOPLE IN MY SCHOOL
BRING LUNCHES THAT ARE WRAPPED
IN PLASTIC.
IT WOULD BE AN AMAZING IDEA TO
REDUCE THE SCHOOL LUNCH WASTE.
Adrian takes a reusable container out of the fridge.
He says, THERE'S A TON OF
WASTE EVERY SINGLE DAY.
THIS YEAR I WANT MY SCHOOL
ROUTINE TO BE ZERO WASTE AND LOW
CARBON.
I’D LOVE SOME HELP.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle says, YOU KNOW, BACK WHEN I WAS
IN HIGH-SCHOOL, YOU NEVER EVEN
HEARD ABOUT
SOMETHING LIKE ZERO WASTE.
He walks through a neighbourhood with Shakira and Lisa.
Lisa says, WELL, BACK THEN CARS USED TO
HAVE FOUR LEGS AND WERE CALLED
HORSES.
[Laughing]
Kyle says, VERY FUNNY.
He follows Lisa and Shakira to Adrian’s house. Inside, Adrian’s dog Raffi looks out a window.
[Doorbell ringing]
Text reads, Ding Dong. Raffi jumps down from the window.
Adrian says, COME.
Raffi follows Adrian, who answers the door.
Lisa, Shakira and Kyle say, HI!
Adrian waves and says, COME IN, COME IN.
Shakira says, THANK YOU.
They follow Adrian inside. In the living room, Adrian stands beside his parents.
He says, SO, THESE ARE MY PARENTS.
THIS IS MY MOM,
THIS IS MY DAD.
AND THIS IS MY DOG RAFFI.
Lisa pets Raffi.
She says, HI, RAFFI!
Shakira says, HI! NICE TO MEET
ALL OF YOU.
THANK YOU FOR
HAVING US IN YOUR HOME.
Shakira says, I'M SHAKIRA.
Lisa says, I'M LISA.
Kyle says, AND I'M KYLE,
NICE TO MEET YA.
Shakira says, SO, ADRIAN, I HEAR YOU'RE GOING
BACK TO SCHOOL IN A COUPLE OF
WEEKS?
Adrian says, YEP, I AM.
Shakira asks, ARE YOU EXCITED
FOR THAT?
Adrian hesitantly says, YEAH.
Kyle says, AND WE HEAR THAT YOU WANT TO
MAKE YOUR BACK TO SCHOOL ROUTINE
A LITTLE MORE SUSTAINABLE AND
ECO-FRIENDLY.
Adrian says, I JUST WANT TO REDUCE THE WASTE
THAT WE PRODUCE AND MAKE THIS
PLACE AS
ECO-FRIENDLY AS POSSIBLE.
Lisa says, WELL, I'VE GOT SOME GREAT IDEAS
ON HOW WE CAN DO THAT IN YOUR
SCHOOL LUNCH.
LET'S YOU AND I
GOT TO THE KITCHEN.
Adrian shrugs and says, SURE.
Lisa says, LET'S GO!
[Funky music plays]
Adrian and the three Green Squad members run across a field.
A person says, GREEN SQUAD.
Lisa stands in the kitchen with Adrian.
She says, SO WHY DON'T YOU TELL ME A
LITTLE ABOUT THE WASTE THAT'S
PRODUCED BY THE SCHOOL LUNCHES
THAT THE KIDS AT YOUR SCHOOL
BRING.
Adrian says, KIDS AT MY SCHOOL USE A LOT
OF PLASTIC ITEMS LIKE CHEESE
STRING, GRANOLA BARS, YOGURT,
PLASTIC WRAP, PLASTIC BAGS, ALOT
OF SINGLE USE
PLASTIC ITEMS IN GENERAL.
Lisa says, SO, I KNOW SOMETIMES WE LOOK AT
OUR LUNCHES AND WE'RE LIKE OH
THERE'S ONLY A FEW SINGLE USE
PLASTIC ITEMS HERE BUT IN CANADA
AND THE US AROUND 27 MILLION
KIDS BRING LUNCH TO SCHOOL
EVERYDAY.
An animation shows a school bus being driven over a calendar.
Lisa narrates, OVER THE COURSE OF A SCHOOL YEAR
THAT'S ALMOST 5 BILLION LUNCHES.
THAT'S A MASSIVE AMOUNT OF
PLASTIC BEING THROWN AWAY.
In the kitchen, Lisa asks, DO YOU LIKE TO DO A
LOT OF BAKING AT HOME?
Adrian says, OF COURSE, YEAH.
BAKING IS ONE OF THE ONLY
PRODUCTIVE THINGS I DO.
Laughing, Lisa asks, WHAT'S YOUR
FAVORITE THING TO BAKE?
Adrian says, I LIKE TO BAKE CAKES AND
CUPCAKES WITH MY MOM A LOT.
Lisa says, AW, THAT'S SO SWEET.
Lisa narrates, WHEN I FOUND OUT ADRIAN LOVES
TO BAKE I THOUGHT HE'D BE INTO
MAKING DIY FOOD WRAPPING.
She places a tray of supplies on the kitchen island.
She says, THE FIRST THING THAT WE'RE GONNA
DO IS MAKE AN ALTERNATIVE TO
PLASTIC WRAP.
Lisa narrates, THAT WAY HE COULD BRING HIS OWN
BAKED GOODS TO SCHOOL INSTEAD OF
PREPACKAGED SNACKS.
She looks at Adrian and says, I THINK WE CAN MAKE YOUR LUNCH
ZERO WASTE OR AS CLOSE TO IT AS
POSSIBLE.
THESE ARE GONNA BE BEESWAX
WRAPS WHICH ARE ALL NATURAL AND
COMPLETELY REUSABLE SO
A GREAT ALTERNATIVE.
Adrian scoops beeswax into a bowl.
Lisa says, SO, WE'RE GONNA START WITH
4 TABLESPOONS OF BEESWAX.
Text reads, 4 tbsp = 60ml.
Lisa says, NEXT WE NEED A TABLESPOON OF
PINE ROSIN WHICH IS JUST LIKE
TREE SAP AND IT'S JUST GONNA
HELP MAKE IT NICE AND STICKY.
Text reads, 1 tbsp = 15ml. Adrian adds pine rosin to the bowl.
Lisa adds, AND NEXT IS A TABLESPOON OF
JOJOBA OIL WHICH IS ALSO GONNA
HELP WITH THE STICKINESS.
She squirts jojoba oil onto a measuring spoon. Text reads, 1tbsp = 15ml.
Lisa says, THAT LOOKS GOOD.
Adrian adds the oil to the bowl.
Lisa says, PUT A PIECE OF PARCHMENT PAPER
DOWN AND ANY FABRIC THAT'S 100
PERCENT COTTON.
She lays parchment paper on a baking sheet, then lays down pieces of fabric.
She says, ONE FOR YOU AND ONE FOR ME.
SO, NOW WE'RE GONNA PUT THIS ON
A DOUBLE BOILER AND GET IT ALL
MELTED.
Adrian says, PERFECT.
With the bowl over a pot on the stove, Lisa melts everything together. She then carefully carries the bowl back to the island with a tea towel. Lisa places it on a trivet.
She says, THIS IS THE FUN PART.
TIME TO START PAINTING.
Adrian dips a paint brush into the melted wax.
Lisa says, SO, WE WANT TO TRY TO GET IT AS
EVEN AS POSSIBLE AND COAT THE
WHOLE THING BUT DON'T
WORRY ABOUT IT TOO, TOO MUCH.
Adrian paints the pieces of cotton with the wax.
Lisa asks, BET YOU’VE NEVER DONE A
BEESWAX PAINTING BEFORE.
[Laughing]
Adrian says, NO, I HAVE NOT.
Lisa opens the oven.
She says, AND NOW THAT WE HAVE IT ALL
SPREAD OUT WE CAN PUT IT IN THE
OVEN FOR 2 MINUTES.
She puts the baking tray in the oven. Text reads, 2-5 minutes at 200°F = 90°C.
Outside, Lisa says, SO, NOW WE JUST LAY THEM OUT
FLAT TO DRY AND IT ONLY TAKES A
FEW MINUTES AND THEN
WE'LL HAVE OUR BEESWAX WRAPS.
She and Adrian lay their wraps on a drying rack.
In the kitchen, Adrian says, IT'S FUN AND EASY.
YOU CAN MAKE IT AT
HOME FOR SO LITTLE TIME.
FOR SOMETHING SO “WORLD
CHANGING” IT'S VERY EASY TO MAKE.
At the island, Lisa says, OKAY.
SO, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT
YOU HAD MENTIONED THAT HAD
DISPOSABLE PLASTIC WAS GRANOLA
BARS SO TO REDUCE WE'RE GONNA
ACTUALLY GONNA MAKE OUR OWN
GRANOLA BARS USING INGREDIENTS
THAT YOU LIKE AND THAT WILL HELP
US REDUCE OUR PLASTIC INTAKE
BECAUSE WE'LL WRAP THEM IN THE
BEESWAX WRAPPERS THAT WE MADE.
SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN?
Adrian says, YEP.
Lisa says, SO, WE'RE GONNA START WITH THREE
QUARTER CUPS OF OATS AND THEN
OAT FLOUR, GROUND FLAX.
Adrian pours oats into a large mixing bowl. Text reads, ¾ cup = 175ml. Adrian adds flour to the bowl. Text reads, ½ cup = 125ml. Lisa scoops ground flax out of a jar. Text reads, 2tbsp = 30ml.
Lisa says, NEXT, WE'LL ADD HALF A
TEASPOON OF GROUND NUTMEG.
She adds nutmeg to the bowl. Text reads, ½ tsp = 2.5ml.
Lisa says, NEXT CINNAMON AND THAT
IS OUR DRY INGREDIENTS.
She adds cinnamon to the bowl. Text reads, 2 tsp = 10ml.
Lisa says, NOW, WE'LL MOVE ONTO
THE WET INGREDIENTS.
She scoops an ingredient into a mug. Adrian puts the mug in the microwave. Text reads, ¼ cup = 60ml.
Lisa says, FIRST THING WE NEED TO DO IS
MELT ONE QUARTER CUP COCONUT
OIL.
Adrian starts the microwave. Lisa pours applesauce into a measuring cup. Text reads, ¼ cup = 60ml.
Lisa says, THEN WE MIX THE COCONUT OIL WITH
APPLESAUCE, HONEY, VANILLA AND
ONE EGG.
Adrian adds honey to a mixing bowl. Text reads, ¼ cup = 60ml. Lisa pours vanilla in the bowl. Text reads, 1 tsp = 5ml. Lisa cracks an egg into the bowl. Text reads, 1. Adrian mixes the wet ingredients together with a fork, then pours them into the large, dry ingredient mixing bowl.
Lisa says, WE POUR THE LIQUID INTO THE DRY
INGREDIENTS, THEN ADD CARROTS.
Adrian mixes shredded carrots with the other ingredients. Text reads, ¾ cup = 175ml.
Lisa says, SPREAD OUT THE MIXTURE INTO
A THIN LAYER AND BAKE FOR 25
MINUTES.
She spreads the mixture into a parchment paper lined baking pan and slides it in the oven. Adrian closes the oven. Text reads, 25 mins at 350°F = 175°C. Later, Lisa slides the baked granola bar out of the pan and onto a cutting board.
Shakira says, SOMETHING SMELLS
VERY GOOD IN HERE.
She joins Lisa and Adrian at the island.
She asks, WHAT HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN MAKING?
Lisa says, OUR CARROT GRANOLA BARS.
YOU'RE JUST IN
TIME TO TRY SOME.
Shakira claps and says, YAY!
Lisa says, DOESN'T IT LOOK
GOOD, ADRIAN?
Adrian says, OF COURSE.
Lisa cuts the granola bar into pieces.
Shakira says, WOW IT'S REALLY COOL THAT YOU
MADE A GRANOLA BAR AT HOME.
Lisa says, I KNOW.
She gives Shakira a piece of the bar.
She says, FOR YOU.
Shakira says, THANK YOU.
Lisa gives Adrian a piece.
She says, FOR YOU.
Adrian says, THANK YOU.
[Laughing]
Lisa takes a piece and says, AND FOR ME!
OKAY.
Shakira says, CHEERS.
Adrian says, CHEERS.
The trio tap their granola bars together.
[Laughing]
The try the bars. Lisa nods.
Shakira says, MMM.
VERY GOOD.
Lisa says, MM-HMM.
Adrian says, THESE ARE PROBABLY THE BEST
GRANOLA BARS I'VE EVER TASTED.
Lisa says, WOW!
LOOK AT US GO.
HIGH FIVE.
She high gives Adrian.
She says, LOOK AT US GO.
I'M VERY HAPPY.
Adrian smiles. Lisa grabs their beeswax wraps.
She says, OKAY.
SO, NOW WE CAN WRAP THEM IN
THE BEESWAX PAPER THAT WE MADE.
Adrian says, OKAY.
Lisa says, GRAB A BAR.
She places a granola bar in her beeswax wrap paper.
She says, FOLD IT OVER.
She folds the paper over the bar.
Lisa says, SO REALLY, LIKE, THE BEESWAX
COMBINED WITH THE HEAT FROM YOUR
HAND IS WHAT MAKES
IT NICE AND STICKY.
She presses and folds the edges of the wrap together so they stick.
Shakira says, AND THEN YOU CAN REUSE THEM.
Lisa says, EXACTLY, YEAH.
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS RUN IT
UNDER COLD WATER AND THEN IT'S
GOOD TO BE REUSED AGAIN.
Shakira says, WOW.
Adrian says, THIS IS LIKE SCIENCE
CLASS BUT IT'S FUN.
[Lisa and Shakira laughing]
Lisa packs other food containers in a lunch bag.
She narrates, HOT LEFTOVERS, YOGOURT AND FRUIT
COMPLETE OUR ZERO WASTE LUNCH.
Lisa and Adrian pack the folded granola bars in the lunch bag.
Adrian comments, IF EVERYONE AT MY SCHOOL DID THE
SAME, LIKE THE LUNCHBOX IDEA,
THE AMOUNT OF PLASTIC WE'LL SEE
IS GONNA GET REDUCED BY SO MUCH
AND THAT WOULD BE
REALLY COOL TO SEE.
[Funky music plays]
The Green Squad members dance. Text reads, Green Beat.
Lisa narrates, ADRIAN'S LUNCHBOX IDEA
WOULD BE SUPER COOL.
IF EVERYONE AT HIS SCHEDULE
PACKED A ZERO WASTE LUNCH THE
AMOUNT OF PLASTIC SAVED DURING
JUST ONE SCHOOL YEAR WOULD BE
OVER 9 THOUSAND KILOGRAMS.
In a picture, Lisa looks shocked.
She narrates, THAT'S ABOUT THE
WEIGHT OF 18 POLAR BEARS.
POLAR BEARS ARE JUST ONE OF
THE ANIMALS EFFECTED BY PLASTIC
WASTE.
In a field, a cow nudges a piece of garbage.
Lisa narrates, ZERO WASTE LUNCHES HELP KEEP
OCEANS AND BEACHES CLEANER, AND
THEY REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF
PLASTIC THAT CAN TAKE UP TO 500
YEARS TO BREAK
DOWN IN LANDFILLS.
YOU COULD EVEN CHALLENGE YOUR
WHOLE SCHOOL TO GET IN ON THE
ACTION.
Lisa cuts another granola bar.
She narrates, OUR HOMEMADE GRANOLA BARS COULD
ALSO BECOME A SCHOOL LUNCHBOX
FAVOURITE.
THEY ARE EPICALLY DELICIOUS.
[Funky music plays]
Kyle, Lisa and Shakira chase after Adrian as he skateboards down a sidewalk.
A person says, GREEN SQUAD.
In the dining room, Kyle and Adrian sit at the table.
He says, ALL RIGHT.
LET'S TALK ABOUT
HOW YOU GET SCHOOL.
Kyle opens a laptop.
He says, SO, HERE'S A QUESTION.
HOW ARE YOU GETTING THERE NOW?
A map shows Adrian’s house and school.
Adrian says, WELL, I RIDE WITH MY PARENTS IN
THEIR CAR TO GET TO SCHOOL.
Kyle says, DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE'S OVER
200 MILLION CARS IN NORTH
AMERICA
RIGHT NOW AND THEY'RE PRODUCING
A BUNCH OF GREENHOUSE GASES?
SO, WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO IS
REDUCE OUR EMISSIONS AND MAKE
SURE THAT WE DON'T CAUSE NOISE
POLLUTION AND AIR POLLUTION IN
OUR CITY.
SO, IT SOUNDS LIKE WE'RE GONNA
HAVE TO FIND SOME LOWER CARBON
WAYS TO GET YOU TO SCHOOL.
ANY IDEAS?
Adrian says, WE COULD WALK?
Kyle says, LET'S SEE HOW FAR AWAY YOUR
HOUSE IS FROM THE SCHOOL.
The map shows a line that connects Adrian’s house to the school.
Adrian says, IT LOOKS LIKE WE ARE
SIX KILOMETRES AWAY.
Text reads, 6km = 3.75 miles. Elsewhere in the house, Adrian walks on a treadmill.
Kyle says, LET'S TEST HOW FAST
YOU'RE WALKING RIGHT NOW.
Text reads, Walking test. Kyle looks at the treadmill.
He says, LOOKS LIKE IT'S ABOUT
2 KILOMETRES AN HOUR?
Text reads, 2km/hr = 1.25 miles/hr.
Adrian says, THIS IS PRETTY SLOW.
I CAN DEFINITELY GO FASTER.
He increases the speed of the treadmill.
[Beeping]
Kyle says, ALL RIGHT.
HOW DO WE FEEL?
Adrian walks faster.
He says, THIS IS KIND OF LESS THAN NORMAL
WALKING SO I THINK WE CAN BUMP
IT UP A BIT.
Kyle says, A LITTLE BIT FASTER AND WE'RE
GOING 3.2 KILOMETRES.
Adrian increases the treadmill speed.
[Beeping]
Text reads, 3.2km/hr = 2 miles/hr.
Kyle says, AND NOW
WE'RE AT 5.
The speed of the treadmill increases. Adrian walks faster. Text reads, 5km/hr = 3.1 miles/hr.
Adrian says, THIS IS
DEFINITELY SPEED WALKING.
Kyle says, SO, I'M THINKING IT'S GONNA TAKE
YOU SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THREE AND
FOUR KILOMETRES TO YOUR WALKING
SPEED.
Adrian stops the treadmill.
Kyle says, AND IF WE THINK ABOUT A
SIX KILOMETRE WALK TO GET TO
SCHOOL....THAT'S A LOT OF TIME.
IT'S GONNA TAKE YOU ANYWHERE
BETWEEN AN HOUR AND A HALF TO 2
HOURS.
Adrian nods and says, THAT IS A LOT.
Kyle says, WE GOTTA FIND
SOMETHING FASTER.
Adrian says, YEAH.
[Upbeat music plays]
Traffic flows through a city.
Kyle narrates, IN A CITY THERE ARE USUALLY TWO
OTHER WAYS TO GET AROUND THAT
POLLUTE LESS THAN A CAR.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION LIKE THE
BUS…
At the dining table, Adrian looks at the laptop.
He says, LET'S CHECK.
A line connects Adrian’s house to his school. Text reads, 1 hour.
Kyle says, OOH.
Adrian says, AN HOUR.
Kyle narrates, …OR A BICYCLE.
A new route connects the house and school. Text reads, 25 minutes.
Adrian says, 25 MINUTES.
Kyle says, THAT IS PERFECT.
IT'S FAST AND WE'RE NOT USING
ANY UNNECESSARY GREENHOUSE GASES
BUT I THINK THERE'S SOMEBODY
WE GOTTA CHECK WITH FIRST.
Adrian’s dad stands between Kyle and Adrian.
Kyle says, WE'RE WONDERING HOW
ADRIAN'S GONNA GET THERE.
IF THAT'S WITH YOU
OR IS THAT'S ALONE?
Adrian’s dad says, SO, AT THE BEGINNING I'M
GONNA BE WITH HIM AND WHEN I'M
CONFIDENT I THINK HE
CAN TRAVEL BY HIMSELF.
THERE'S ONLY 2, 3, STREETS
THAT HE NEEDS TO BE SO CAUTIOUS.
OTHER THAN THAT HE CAN USE THE
BIKE PATH AND TAKE THE VERY SAFE
PLACE BESIDE THE CANAL.
Kyle says, THAT'S AWESOME.
He high fives Adrian. Outside, he rides a bike down the street with Adrian and Adrian’s dad.
[Cheerful music plays]
Adrian, his dad, and Kyle ride their bikes down a bike path.
Kyle says, I BET IF YOU DID THIS EVERY
SINGLE DAY YOU'D PROBABLY BE A
LITTLE HEALTHIER AND YOUR
TIME WOULD JUST GET FASTER AND
FASTER.
WHICH MEANS MAYBE THIS TIME IT
MIGHT BE 35 MINUTES BUT BY THE
END OF THE YEAR YOU
MIGHT GET DOWN TO 20.
AS WELL, EXERCISE BEFORE
GETTING TO SCHOOL ALSO HELPS YOU
CONCENTRATE A LITTLE MORE.
Adrian asks, REALLY?
Kyle says, YEAH, A SCIENTIFIC STUDY
PROVED IT.
Adrian says, OH, NO WAY.
An animated brain jogs on a treadmill.
Kyle says, THERE IT IS.
Adrian OH YEAH, IT'S RIGHT
THERE.
He bikes over a bridge to the edge of a busy street.
Kyle says, WE DID IT!
Adrian says, YEAH!
Kyle and Adrian’s dad stop their bikes beside Adrian’s.
Adrian says, SCHOOL'S RIGHT THERE AND WE
GOT HERE IN HOW MUCH TIME?
Adrian’s dad checks his watch.
He says, 26 MINUTES SHARP.
Kyle says, 26 MINUTES.
SO, THE QUESTION IS DO YOU
THINK YOU CAN DO THIS EVERYDAY?
Adrian says, ABSOLUTELY AND IF IT SNOWS OR IF
IT RAINS MAYBE I'LL STILL GO A BITT, BUT
SOMETIMES I MIGHT
CARPOOL WITH MY DAD.
IF THAT'S OKAY?
Kyle says, THAT'S PERFECT!
EVEN IF YOU CAN'T DO IT EVERYDAY
AND YOU'RE JUST DOING IT HALF
THE TIME YOU'RE STILL SAVING
HALF OF YOUR CAR RIDES WORTH OF
CARBON SO DOING IT AS MUCH AS
YOU CAN MAKES A BIG IMPACT.
Adrian nods and smiles. He bikes back to the house, where Lisa and Shakira stand on the sidewalk.
Lisa and Shakira say, HEY!
Adrian says, HI!
Kyle follows Adrian down the street.
Lisa asks, HOW WAS IT?
Adrian says, IT WAS AMAZING.
Kyle says, AND IT ONLY TAKES 25
MINUTES.
Lisa says, GOSH, THAT'S SO QUICK.
Shakira says, YEAH!
SO, NOW IT'S TIME TO
TACKLE OUR NEXT CHALLENGE.
BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING.
Kyle says to Adrian, IT'S BEEN GREAT
RIDING WITH YOU MAN.
Adrian says, SAME TO YOU.
He fist bumps Kyle.
[Funky music plays]
The Green Squad members dance. Text reads, Green Beat.
Kyle narrates, PEDAL POWER CAN GET YOU AROUND
TOWN AND HELP REDUCE CARBON
EMISSIONS BUT HOW ABOUT
PEDALLING THAT DOESN'T GET YOU
ANYWHERE BUT ALSO SAVES ENERGY?
A person rides a stationary bike.
Kyle narrates, THERE'S A ROCK BAND THAT CAME
UP WITH A SUPER SMART WAY TO USE
PEDAL POWER TO CREATE
ENERGY FOR CONCERTS.
FANS PEDAL STATIONARY BIKES THAT
ARE SET UP AROUND THE STAGE.
THE ENERGY CREATED BY THAT PEDAL
POWER IS STORED IN RECYCLED
RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES THAT
POWER THE LIGHTS, INSTRUMENTS
AND MICROPHONES. IT'S A
CLEANER, GREENER WAY TO ROCK
OUT.
[Rock music plays]
[Funky music plays]
Adrian rollerblades down a sidewalk. The three Green Squad members run after him.
A person says, GREEN SQUAD.
In Adrian’s closet, Adrian hands Shakira a hanger with a pair of jeans.
Shakira narrates, ADRIAN USUALLY BUYS SOME NEW
CLOTHES BEFORE HEADING BACK TO
SCHOOL.
THIS YEAR HE WANTS
TO BUY MUCH LESS.
She lays jeans and other clothes out on Adrian’s bed. Adrian climbs onto the bed. Shakira takes a seat on the corner.
She says, THESE ARE YOUR CLOTHES
FROM LAST YEAR RIGHT?
Adrian says, YES.
Shakira asks, DO THEY STILL FIT YOU?
Adrian says, I MEAN.
I FEEL LIKE I'VE OUTGROWN MY
PANTS AND SOON ENOUGH I'LL
OUTGROW EVERYTHING.
ALL MY UNIFORM.
WOULDN'T IT BE COOL IF WE COULD
REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF CLOTHES
THAT WE HAVE TO BUY?
Shakira says, YEAH THAT WOULD BE REALLY COOL.
Adrian types a text message.
Shakira narrates, THERE'S SOMETHING WE COULD DO TO
NOT ONLY REDUCE BUT REUSE WHAT
WE ALREADY HAVE.
Adrian sits at the top of a staircase while on his phone. A message reads, Clothing swap?
Adrian says, WE CAN HAVE A CLOTHING SWAP.
Text messages read, Ok!!, Can’t wait, So Fun!!.
Shakira says, GRAB YOUR MOM'S PHONE AND INVITE
ALL YOUR FRIENDS FROM SCHOOL.
Other text messages read, Yay! Clothes swap!, Epic.
Talking on the phone, Adrian says, BRING ALL THE OLD CLOTHES THAT
YOU HAVE AND STUFF THAT DOESN'T
FIT ANYMORE.
ALL RIGHT?
Lisa and Shakira bring clothes on a clothing rack into the living room.
Shakira narrates, BUYING NEW CLOTHES EVERY YEAR IS
VERY EXPENSIVE IN ITS OWN, BUT THE
CLOTHES INDUSTRY ITSELF IS
EXPENSIVE IN MANY DIFFERENT
WAYS.
She and Lisa high five. They set up a mirror in the living room.
Shakira narrates, PRODUCTION OF THESE CLOTHES
CAUSES AIR AND WATER POLLUTION
AND SHIPPING THEM AROUND
THE WORLD PRODUCES A LOT OF
GREENHOUSE GASES.
[Doorbell ringing]
Text reads, Ding Dong. Lisa and Shakira stand behind a table.
Lisa says, HI!
Shakira says, HI!
WELCOME!
A person says, HI! HERE'S ALL THE STUFF I BROUGHT.
A woman with long, dark brown hair puts a large bag of clothes on the table.
Shakira says, OH, WOW!
THAT'S A LOT.
The brown haired woman says, THANK YOU.
Lisa says, WELCOME TO SWAP.
Folded clothes are laid out on the table.
Shakira narrates, SWAP RULES ARE SIMPLE.
GIVE ANYTHING YOU DON'T NEED
AND PICK ANYTHING YOU LIKE.
At the table, she says, OH, YOU BROUGHT A
BACKPACK TOO?
A brown haired girl says, YEAH.
Shakira says, THAT'S REALLY COOL.
SEE, YOU CAN DO THINGS
WITH NOT JUST CLOTHES.
YOU CAN DO SHOES AND YOU COULD
DO BAGS AND YOU COULD ALWAYS DO
THINGS LIKE BINDERS, MAYBE
MARKERS, ANYTHING REALLY.
ANYTHING FOR BACK TO
SCHOOL YOU CAN DO.
Adrian folds some clothing pieces.
Shakira asks, WHAT ARE YOU HOPING TO FIND
TODAY AT THE CLOTHING SWAP?
The brown haired girl says, UM.
I'D LIKE TO HAVE
SOME SKIRTS, MAYBE.
Shakira says, SOME SKIRTS?
The brown haired girl says, YEAH.
Shakira says, THAT'S GOOD, WHAT ABOUT YOU?
A black haired boy says, UM, A SWEATER.
Shakira says, FEEL FREE TO BROWSE.
THERE'S SOME SWEATERS THERE.
THERE'S SOME BLAZERS.
A long haired girl picks up a skirt.
Shakira says, OH, THAT SKIRTS REALLY
CUTE FOR SCHOOL.
The long haired girl says, YEAH.
A heart appears that reads, Cute!. The black haired boy looks at a sweater.
Shakira says, YOU FOUND A LOT!
The black haired boy says, I THINK, YEAH.
Shakira says, GOOD!
Lisa says, YOU DID WELL, FOR SURE.
Raffi stands in front of the mirror. Shakira hands Adrian a pair of black pants.
She says, KEEP THESE.
Adrian says, ALL RIGHT.
Shakira says, LET'S SEE, ANYTHING
ELSE WE NEED?
She looks through the clothing rack. Adrian tries on a blazer.
Shakira says, NICE AND THEN WE
HAVE THE NEW PANTS.
LET'S SEE HOW
THESE ARE GONNA LOOK.
Adrian holds the black pants against his chest, the length reaches the floor.
Shakira says, YEAH.
WE'RE DEFINITELY GONNA
HAVE TO PIN THESE UP.
Adrian says, YEAH.
He wears the pants. Shakira folds the leg openings into themselves so they fit Adrian.
Shakira says, ALTERATIONS TO CLOTHES ARE GREAT
BECAUSE YOU CAN EXTEND THE LIFE
OF THE PANTS OR WHATEVER
CLOTHING YOU'RE USING AND WHEN
YOU GROW YOU CAN JUST LET OUT
THE HEM AND THEN THEY'LL BE
LONGER.
The kids look at themselves in the mirror with new clothing items. The brown haired girl wears a blue cardigan.
Shakira says, VERY NICE.
EVERYTHING WORKED OUT GREAT.
The black haired boy wears a striped shirt.
Shakira says, PERFECT.
OH, I LOVE THIS OUTFIT.
The long haired girl wears a grey shirt with a black and white skirt.
Shakira says, VERY
MUCH!
Lisa says, OH, MATCHING!
Shakira says, VERY NICE.
A short haired boy wears a grey and blue sweater.
Lisa says, THAT WAS AWESOME.
CUTE SWEATER.
VERY CUTE.
Shakira says, RIGHT?
Another girl wears a blue hooded sweater. A blond haired girl poses wearing a sweater.
A person says, I LOVE IT.
Adrian looks at the blazer he wears.
A person says, I LOVE YOUR OUTFIT.
Another says, IT’S SO CUTE.
Shakira says, IT FITS YOU WAY
BETTER THAN BEFORE.
GREAT.
Adrian waves to himself in the mirror, then steps away.
At the table, he asks, DO YOU GUYS WANT TO TRY
SOME GRANOLA BARS THAT WE MADE?
A person says, OH YEAH.
The kids at the swap try the homemade granola bars.
A person says, WOW.
Shakira says, AREN'T THEY GOOD?
People say, YEAH!
Lisa asks, DO YOU FEEL BACK
TO SCHOOL READY?
A person says, YEAH, KIND OF.
[Laughing]
Adrian says, I FOUND A NEW BLAZER.
Lisa says, MM-HMM.
IT LOOKS VERY GOOD.
A person says, YEAH, IT DOES.
Lisa adds, YOU LOOK VERY
SOPHISTICATED.
VERY SPIFFY.
IT LOOKS GREAT.
Shakira asks, HOW DOES IT FEEL THAT YOU GOT TO
KIND OF SHARE YOUR CLOTHES WITH
YOUR FRIENDS AND THEN THEY GOT
TO KIND OF SHARE THEIRS WITH
YOU?
Adrian says, WELL, IT WAS COOL TO SEE MY
FRIENDS AGAIN BUT I'M RELIEVED
THAT WE DIDN'T HAVE TO SPEND AS
MUCH MONEY AS WE NORMALLY DO.
Shakira says, AND LESS WASTE RIGHT?
LESS CLOTHES GOING INTO
LANDFILLS AND LESS PRODUCTION
WASTE AND ANY OF THE CLOTHES
THAT HAVE NOT BEEN TAKEN WE CAN
BRING TO THE THRIFT STORE AND
THEN SOMEONE ELSE CAN USE FOR
BACK TO SCHOOL, RIGHT?
People say, YEAH!
[Funky music plays]
The Green Squad members dance. Text reads, Green Beat.
Shakira narrates, POP QUIZ!
WHAT DO FABRICS AND
PLASTICS HAVE IN COMMON?
WELL, THEY RHYME IN CASE YOU
WANT TO WRITE A POEM OR A SONG.
SYNTHETIC FABRICS, LIKE THE ONES
USED IN MOST SCHOOL UNIFORMS,
ARE MADE FROM PLASTIC.
EVERY TIME WE WASH THEM TINY
PLASTIC FIBRES SHED OFF OF OUR
CLOTHES AND INTO THE WATER.
THEY'RE CALLED MICRO-PLASTICS
AND CLOSE TO HALF OF THEM END UP
IN THE OCEAN.
Plastic floats on the surface of the ocean.
Shakira continues, WE CAN HELP REDUCE MICRO-PLASTIC
POLLUTION BY ONLY WASHING
CLOTHES WHEN WE REALLY NEED TO.
IS IT STAINED OR STINKY?
People say, EW!
Shakira narrates, YEAH.
YOU BETTER WASH THAT.
OTHERWISE IT'S READY TO GO
AT LEAST ONE MORE ROUND.
[Funky music plays]
Kyle jumps on a trampoline. Shakira, Lisa and Adrian run around him.
A person says, GREEN SQUAD.
In the living room, Lisa says, SO, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT
BACK TO SCHOOL THIS YEAR?
Adrian says, WELL, MORE CONFIDENT
THAN EVER.
NOW THAT KYLE SHOWED ME
HOW TO GET TO SCHOOL IN AN
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY WAY.
IT'S WAY FUNNER AND SOMETHING
THAT I COULD DEFINITELY DO ON A
DAILY.
ALSO, THE NEW SNACKS WE MADE,
AMAZING.
Shakira says, YEAH.
Adrian says, THE GRANOLA BARS; SOMETHING I
WOULD DEFINITELY MAKE AGAIN.
Lisa says, PERFECT.
Shakira says, YEAH.
ZERO WASTE LUNCH.
Lisa says, AND HOW ABOUT THESE
NEW CLOTHES YOU HAVE ON?
Shakira says, YEAH COME ON!
Lisa says, THE BACK TO SCHOOL SWAP.
Adrian spins in his new blazer.
Lisa says, YUP, YOU, OKAY, OKAY.
[Lisa and Shakira clapping]
[Shakira laughing]
Adrian says, IT WAS AMAZING.
EVERYONE FOUND SOMETHING THAT
THEY WERE LOOKING FOR AND THEY
LEFT HAPPY.
Shakira says, YEAH AND YOU CAN EVEN TAKE IT
ONE STEP FURTHER AND PROPOSE A
SCHOOL WIDE UNIFORM SWAP.
Adrian says, THAT'S A REALLY
GOOD IDEA.
Lisa says, SO, WE'LL BE CHECKING IN
WITH YOU IN A FEW MONTHS.
Shakira says, WHEN YOU'RE REALLY IN
THE SCHOOL ROUTINE.
Lisa says, TO SEE HOW EVERYTHING'S GOING
WITH THE BIKING AND THE ZERO
WASTE LUNCH AND
YOUR SCHOOL UNIFORM.
SO, GOOD LUCK AND WE'RE
REALLY ROOTING FOR YOU.
Shakira says, YEAH, WE HAD SO MUCH
FUN WITH YOU TODAY!
She and Lisa open their arms. Adrian hugs them both.
[Upbeat music plays]
The Green Squad makes a human pyramid. Text reads, Squad Tip. Lisa stands behind a table.
She says, I LOVE EATING WITH
FRIENDS AND FAMILY.
IT'S A GREAT WAY TO CONNECT,
CHAT AND JUST HAVE FUN.
WE SOMETIMES LIKE TO GO TO A
LOCAL RESTAURANT THAT HAS GREAT
FOOD BUT WE CAN'T ALWAYS FINISH
OUR FOOD BECAUSE THE PORTIONS
ARE ENORMOUS.
THEY'D BE PERFECT IF I WAS AN
OLYMPIC WEIGHT LIFTER BUT WE
DIDN'T WANT TO WASTE OUR
FOOD SO THE RESTAURANT GAVE US
POLYSTYRENE FOAM
TAKE-OUT CONTAINERS.
Lisa picks up a polystyrene foam take-out container.
She says, YIKES.
She puts the container back on the table.
She says, THE TROUBLE IS, AS I LATER
DISCOVERED, POLYSTYRENE FOAM
TAKES A REALLY LONG TIME TO
DECOMPOSE LIKE 500 YEARS.
SO, IT'S OBVIOUSLY NOT GREAT FOR
THE ENVIRONMENT SO I WANTED TO
FIND ANOTHER MORE
ECO-FRIENDLY METHOD.
I KNOW THAT WHEN I MAKE FOOD AT
HOME I USE REUSABLE CONTAINERS
FOR THE LEFTOVERS AND
PUT THEM IN THE FRIDGE.
Lisa picks up a glass, reusable container.
She says, SO, I FIGURED WHY NOT DO THE
SAME THING WITH THE FOOD FROM
RESTAURANTS.
She puts the container back on the table.
Lisa says, THE NEXT TIME WE WENT TO THE
RESTAURANT I USED A REUSABLE
CONTAINER AND MY FAMILY AND
I PUT OUR LEFTOVERS IN THERE
INSTEAD AND IT WORKED
GREAT, AND YOU COULD DO IT TOO.
JUST TELL THE
RESTAURANT HOLD THE POLYSTYRENE.
An X appears over the polystyrene foam container.
Lisa says, EVEN IF RESTAURANTS DO GIVE AWAY
TAKE-OUT CONTAINERS THAT USE
MATERIALS THAT DECOMPOSE, LIKE
PAPER OR CARDBOARD, YOU CAN DO
ONE BETTER BY JUST BRINGING
YOUR OWN CONTAINER AND SAVING ON
MATERIALS OVERALL.
YOU'LL FEEL SO MUCH BETTER
MUNCHING ON THAT PEPPERONI PIZZA
FOR BREAKFAST THE NEXT MORNING.
She grins.
[Upbeat music plays]
The Green Squad pose together. Text reads, Check-In. The Squad sits together in front of a tablet.
Lisa says, ADRIAN'S BEEN BACK IN
SCHOOL FOR A WHILE NOW.
LET'S CHECK IN TO
SEE HOW IT'S GOING.
In a video, Adrian says, ALL RIGHT.
SO, THIS IS WHAT I STARTED
PACKING FOR MY NEW WASTE FREE
LUNCH PROJECT.
WE GOT THESE BEESWAX WRAPS.
He shows beeswax wraps in a drawer and reaches into a draw of reusable containers.
Kyle says, THE TUPPERWARES!
Adrian says, THIS IS WHERE I PUT MY LUNCH.
He shows a packed lunch.
He says, I MADE SUSHI FOR MY LUNCH TODAY,
WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY ZERO WASTE.
Green Squad members say, WOW.
Eric says, OH MY GOODNESS!
Lisa says, OKAY!
Eric says, TASTY.
Lisa says, FANCY.
In the video, Adrian says, IT'S HARD AT FIRST BUT AS YOU
KEEP GOING IT GETS MUCH EASIER
AND YOU'LL GET
BETTER AS YOU GO ON.
Lisa says, HE'S DOING A GREAT JOB
WITH THE ZERO WASTE LUNCH.
EVERYTHING IN THERE
LOOKS LIKE IT CAN BE REUSED.
SO, THAT'S EXACTLY THE GOAL.
GREAT JOB.
Sigfried nods.
Eric says, I THINK IT'S GREAT THAT HE
HIGHLIGHTED THAT YOU'RE ALWAYS
IMPROVING.
THAT YOU'LL GET BETTER
AT THE ZERO WASTING.
Sigfried says, YEAH.
Lisa says, MM-HMM.
Shakira adds, AND HE'S HAVING FUN WITH IT HE'S
MAKING SUSHI AND NEW RECIPES
WHICH IS SO COOL.
Sigfried says, YEAH, AND NOW THAT HIS FRIENDS
MAY SEE HIM DOING IT AND HOW
MUCH HE ENJOYS IT AND HOW IT
BENEFITS HIM MAYBE THEY'LL TRY
IT TOO AND HE COULD
SPREAD THE MESSAGE.
In the video, Adrian walks through the living room.
He says, I REALLY, REALLY LOVED THE
IDEA OF BIKING TO SCHOOL.
IT'S A MORE ECO-FRIENDLY WAY BUT
I DON'T THINK I'M GONNA BE ABLE
TO DO IT.
His bike is against a wall with his dads.
Adrian says, THE TEST RIDE.
IT WAS REALLY, IT WAS FUN, IT
WORKED OUT BUT WITH THE WEIGHT
OF MY BAG I DON'T THINK WE'RE
GONNA BE ABLE TO DO IT THIS
YEAR.
IT'S STARTING TO GET COLD.
He reaches for his backpack.
He says, SO, AS YOU CAN SEE,
THERE'S MY COMPUTER IN THERE.
IT GETS REALLY CROWDED IN THERE
AND IT GETS REALLY HEAVY FOR ME.
WE MIGHT TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORT.
THAT'S A VERY BIG POSSIBILITY.
NEXT YEAR I'M SURE WE
COULD START TO MAKE CHANGES.
Kyle says, SO, EVEN THOUGH IT DIDN'T WORK
OUT THIS TIME, I THINK HE REALLY
WANTS TO MAKE A
DIFFERENCE, RIGHT?
AND I THINK THAT'S THE
MOST IMPORTANT PART.
BECAUSE HE DID SAY THAT HE
WANTED TO TRY THIS AGAIN NEXT
YEAR AND MAYBE WHEN HE'S A
LITTLE BIGGER THAT BAG MIGHT BE
A LITTLE BIT LIGHTER OR ALSO
ANOTHER GREAT IDEA IS MAYBE HE
CAN TRY A BASKET ON
THE FRONT OF IT RIGHT?
Eric says, MM-HMM.
Kyle continues, RATHER THAN CARRYING IT ON
YOUR BACK AND LIKE "UGH".
He leans forward.
He says, YOU KNOW?
Sigfried says, YEAH.
Kyle says, IT MIGHT MAKE THE
COMMUTE A LITTLE EASIER.
Shakira says, I'M STILL REALLY PROUD OF HIM
BECAUSE HE DEFINITELY RECOGNIZES
WHAT HE WANTS TO DO AND HE'S
JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT A PLAN
SO THAT HE COULD
PUT IT INTO ACTION .
Sigfried says, MM-HMM.
In the video, Adrian opens his closet.
He says, ALL RIGHT.
SO, THIS IS THE
INSIDE OF MY CLOSET AFTER.
I'M GLAD WE DID THIS BECAUSE
I GOT TO GIVE MY CLOTHES TO
SOMEONE ELSE.
MY UNIFORM AND I GOT
SOMEONE ELSE'S UNIFORM.
WHAT I LIKE THE BEST ABOUT THE
CLOTHING SWAP IS THAT I GOT TO
SEE A TON OF MY FRIENDS THERE
WHILE AT THE SAME TIME DOING
SOMETHING THAT WAS ECO-FRIENDLY
SO IT WAS KIND OF A WIN-WIN.
[Soft laughing]
Kyle nods.
Shakira says, I'M SO GLAD THAT HE LIKED THE
CLOTHING SWAP BECAUSE THE WHOLE
POINT OF IT WAS FOR HIM TO SPEND
TIME WITH HIS FRIENDS THAT HE
LOVED AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
SO, I'M REALLY GLAD THAT HE WAS
ABLE TO MIX SUSTAINABILITY WITH
HANGING OUT WITH FRIENDS.
Sigfried nods.
Adrian says, I DEFINITELY DO THINK THAT THE
SQUAD HAS HELPED ME OPEN MY EYES
WHICH WAS REALLY GREAT.
I APPRECIATED EVERY
SINGLE MOMENT OF THAT.
THEY'RE VERY NICE PEOPLE.
WHO HELPED ME A LOT.
I'M VERY GRATEFUL FOR THAT.
He smiles.
Shakira says, ADRIAN, YOU MADE BACK
TO SCHOOL REALLY COOL.
The entire Green Squad says, GO ADRIAN!
[Upbeat music plays]
A person says, WHEE!
Text reads, tvo kids.

[Cheerful music plays]
Lisa and Shakira stand on a sidewalk outside a house wearing white shirts and carrying backpacks.
Shakira says, COME ON KYLE, LET'S GO.
Lisa says, CANT BE LATE FOR
OUR FIRST DAY BACK!
Kyle walks out of the house with a backpack wearing a white shirt and blsck pants that are too small. Lisa and Monica share a look.
Kyle says, WHAT?
He looks at his uniform.
[Shakira giggling]
Kyle says, SCHOOL UNIFORM MUST HAVE
JUST GOTTEN SMALL OR SOMETHING.
Lisa says, I KNOW AN EIGHT GRADER NAMED
ADRIAN WHO'S GOT A GREAT IDEA.
ORGANIZE A
CLOTHING SWAP PARTY...
Shakira says, …AND REUSE UNIFORMS
FROM OLDER STUDENTS.
Kyle nods and says, COOL.
Shakira says to him, YOU LOOK GREAT.
The three Green Squad members walk down the sidewalk together.
[Upbeat music plays]
In the opening credits, the five Green Squad friends pose. They each open bags that carry different emojis.
Eric has long, black hair, and carries gardening emojis. Lisa has long, tightly braided black hair and carries food and cooking themed emojis. Blond haired Sigfried carries activism themed emojis. Shakira has long, black hair and carries craft themed emojis. Kyle, who has short black hair, has different modes of transportation emojis.
The Green Squad friends dance and pose as text appears that reads, TVO Kids Presents.
A person reading the title says, GREEN SQUAD.
In a kitchen, a boy with dark, curly brown hair wears a blue polo shirt.
He says, HI, I'M ADRIAN.
I'M 12 YEARS OLD.
I LIVE WITH MY MOM.
SHE'S FROM MEXICO AND MY DAD
WHO'S FROM IRAN AND MY DOG
RAFFI.
Adrian sits at a dining room table with his family.
He says, I SPEAK ENGLISH,
FRENCH, PERSIAN AND SPANISH.
HOLA.
Adrian opens his closet.
He says, IN A WEEK I'LL BE
STARTING EIGHTH GRADE.
Clothes are put on a bed.
Adrian says, BACK TO SCHOOL MEANS BUYING NEW
CLOTHES, BUYING NEW STUFF FOR
SCHOOL, BUYING SCHOOL
SUPPLIES, BUYING BOOKS.
I'D REALLY LIKE TO FIND A WAY TO
REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF STUFF WE'RE
BUYING FOR BACK TO SCHOOL.
Adrian gets in the back of a car.
He says, I THINK THAT USING A CAR TO GET
TO SCHOOL ISN'T THE BEST IDEA
BECAUSE IT DOES PRODUCE A
LOT OF CARBON, AND POLLUTES.
The car is driven down the driveway. Text reads, Carbon Dioxide. In the kitchen, Adrian opens the fridge.
He says, A LOT OF PEOPLE IN MY SCHOOL
BRING LUNCHES THAT ARE WRAPPED
IN PLASTIC.
IT WOULD BE AN AMAZING IDEA TO
REDUCE THE SCHOOL LUNCH WASTE.
Adrian takes a reusable container out of the fridge.
He says, THERE'S A TON OF
WASTE EVERY SINGLE DAY.
THIS YEAR I WANT MY SCHOOL
ROUTINE TO BE ZERO WASTE AND LOW
CARBON.
I’D LOVE SOME HELP.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle says, YOU KNOW, BACK WHEN I WAS
IN HIGH-SCHOOL, YOU NEVER EVEN
HEARD ABOUT
SOMETHING LIKE ZERO WASTE.
He walks through a neighbourhood with Shakira and Lisa.
Lisa says, WELL, BACK THEN CARS USED TO
HAVE FOUR LEGS AND WERE CALLED
HORSES.
[Laughing]
Kyle says, VERY FUNNY.
He follows Lisa and Shakira to Adrian’s house. Inside, Adrian’s dog Raffi looks out a window.
[Doorbell ringing]
Text reads, Ding Dong. Raffi jumps down from the window.
Adrian says, COME.
Raffi follows Adrian, who answers the door.
Lisa, Shakira and Kyle say, HI!
Adrian waves and says, COME IN, COME IN.
Shakira says, THANK YOU.
They follow Adrian inside. In the living room, Adrian stands beside his parents.
He says, SO, THESE ARE MY PARENTS.
THIS IS MY MOM,
THIS IS MY DAD.
AND THIS IS MY DOG RAFFI.
Lisa pets Raffi.
She says, HI, RAFFI!
Shakira says, HI! NICE TO MEET
ALL OF YOU.
THANK YOU FOR
HAVING US IN YOUR HOME.
Shakira says, I'M SHAKIRA.
Lisa says, I'M LISA.
Kyle says, AND I'M KYLE,
NICE TO MEET YA.
Shakira says, SO, ADRIAN, I HEAR YOU'RE GOING
BACK TO SCHOOL IN A COUPLE OF
WEEKS?
Adrian says, YEP, I AM.
Shakira asks, ARE YOU EXCITED
FOR THAT?
Adrian hesitantly says, YEAH.
Kyle says, AND WE HEAR THAT YOU WANT TO
MAKE YOUR BACK TO SCHOOL ROUTINE
A LITTLE MORE SUSTAINABLE AND
ECO-FRIENDLY.
Adrian says, I JUST WANT TO REDUCE THE WASTE
THAT WE PRODUCE AND MAKE THIS
PLACE AS
ECO-FRIENDLY AS POSSIBLE.
Lisa says, WELL, I'VE GOT SOME GREAT IDEAS
ON HOW WE CAN DO THAT IN YOUR
SCHOOL LUNCH.
LET'S YOU AND I
GOT TO THE KITCHEN.
Adrian shrugs and says, SURE.
Lisa says, LET'S GO!
[Funky music plays]
Adrian and the three Green Squad members run across a field.
A person says, GREEN SQUAD.
Lisa stands in the kitchen with Adrian.
She says, SO WHY DON'T YOU TELL ME A
LITTLE ABOUT THE WASTE THAT'S
PRODUCED BY THE SCHOOL LUNCHES
THAT THE KIDS AT YOUR SCHOOL
BRING.
Adrian says, KIDS AT MY SCHOOL USE A LOT
OF PLASTIC ITEMS LIKE CHEESE
STRING, GRANOLA BARS, YOGURT,
PLASTIC WRAP, PLASTIC BAGS, ALOT
OF SINGLE USE
PLASTIC ITEMS IN GENERAL.
Lisa says, SO, I KNOW SOMETIMES WE LOOK AT
OUR LUNCHES AND WE'RE LIKE OH
THERE'S ONLY A FEW SINGLE USE
PLASTIC ITEMS HERE BUT IN CANADA
AND THE US AROUND 27 MILLION
KIDS BRING LUNCH TO SCHOOL
EVERYDAY.
An animation shows a school bus being driven over a calendar.
Lisa narrates, OVER THE COURSE OF A SCHOOL YEAR
THAT'S ALMOST 5 BILLION LUNCHES.
THAT'S A MASSIVE AMOUNT OF
PLASTIC BEING THROWN AWAY.
In the kitchen, Lisa asks, DO YOU LIKE TO DO A
LOT OF BAKING AT HOME?
Adrian says, OF COURSE, YEAH.
BAKING IS ONE OF THE ONLY
PRODUCTIVE THINGS I DO.
Laughing, Lisa asks, WHAT'S YOUR
FAVORITE THING TO BAKE?
Adrian says, I LIKE TO BAKE CAKES AND
CUPCAKES WITH MY MOM A LOT.
Lisa says, AW, THAT'S SO SWEET.
Lisa narrates, WHEN I FOUND OUT ADRIAN LOVES
TO BAKE I THOUGHT HE'D BE INTO
MAKING DIY FOOD WRAPPING.
She places a tray of supplies on the kitchen island.
She says, THE FIRST THING THAT WE'RE GONNA
DO IS MAKE AN ALTERNATIVE TO
PLASTIC WRAP.
Lisa narrates, THAT WAY HE COULD BRING HIS OWN
BAKED GOODS TO SCHOOL INSTEAD OF
PREPACKAGED SNACKS.
She looks at Adrian and says, I THINK WE CAN MAKE YOUR LUNCH
ZERO WASTE OR AS CLOSE TO IT AS
POSSIBLE.
THESE ARE GONNA BE BEESWAX
WRAPS WHICH ARE ALL NATURAL AND
COMPLETELY REUSABLE SO
A GREAT ALTERNATIVE.
Adrian scoops beeswax into a bowl.
Lisa says, SO, WE'RE GONNA START WITH
4 TABLESPOONS OF BEESWAX.
Text reads, 4 tbsp = 60ml.
Lisa says, NEXT WE NEED A TABLESPOON OF
PINE ROSIN WHICH IS JUST LIKE
TREE SAP AND IT'S JUST GONNA
HELP MAKE IT NICE AND STICKY.
Text reads, 1 tbsp = 15ml. Adrian adds pine rosin to the bowl.
Lisa adds, AND NEXT IS A TABLESPOON OF
JOJOBA OIL WHICH IS ALSO GONNA
HELP WITH THE STICKINESS.
She squirts jojoba oil onto a measuring spoon. Text reads, 1tbsp = 15ml.
Lisa says, THAT LOOKS GOOD.
Adrian adds the oil to the bowl.
Lisa says, PUT A PIECE OF PARCHMENT PAPER
DOWN AND ANY FABRIC THAT'S 100
PERCENT COTTON.
She lays parchment paper on a baking sheet, then lays down pieces of fabric.
She says, ONE FOR YOU AND ONE FOR ME.
SO, NOW WE'RE GONNA PUT THIS ON
A DOUBLE BOILER AND GET IT ALL
MELTED.
Adrian says, PERFECT.
With the bowl over a pot on the stove, Lisa melts everything together. She then carefully carries the bowl back to the island with a tea towel. Lisa places it on a trivet.
She says, THIS IS THE FUN PART.
TIME TO START PAINTING.
Adrian dips a paint brush into the melted wax.
Lisa says, SO, WE WANT TO TRY TO GET IT AS
EVEN AS POSSIBLE AND COAT THE
WHOLE THING BUT DON'T
WORRY ABOUT IT TOO, TOO MUCH.
Adrian paints the pieces of cotton with the wax.
Lisa asks, BET YOU’VE NEVER DONE A
BEESWAX PAINTING BEFORE.
[Laughing]
Adrian says, NO, I HAVE NOT.
Lisa opens the oven.
She says, AND NOW THAT WE HAVE IT ALL
SPREAD OUT WE CAN PUT IT IN THE
OVEN FOR 2 MINUTES.
She puts the baking tray in the oven. Text reads, 2-5 minutes at 200°F = 90°C.
Outside, Lisa says, SO, NOW WE JUST LAY THEM OUT
FLAT TO DRY AND IT ONLY TAKES A
FEW MINUTES AND THEN
WE'LL HAVE OUR BEESWAX WRAPS.
She and Adrian lay their wraps on a drying rack.
In the kitchen, Adrian says, IT'S FUN AND EASY.
YOU CAN MAKE IT AT
HOME FOR SO LITTLE TIME.
FOR SOMETHING SO “WORLD
CHANGING” IT'S VERY EASY TO MAKE.
At the island, Lisa says, OKAY.
SO, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT
YOU HAD MENTIONED THAT HAD
DISPOSABLE PLASTIC WAS GRANOLA
BARS SO TO REDUCE WE'RE GONNA
ACTUALLY GONNA MAKE OUR OWN
GRANOLA BARS USING INGREDIENTS
THAT YOU LIKE AND THAT WILL HELP
US REDUCE OUR PLASTIC INTAKE
BECAUSE WE'LL WRAP THEM IN THE
BEESWAX WRAPPERS THAT WE MADE.
SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN?
Adrian says, YEP.
Lisa says, SO, WE'RE GONNA START WITH THREE
QUARTER CUPS OF OATS AND THEN
OAT FLOUR, GROUND FLAX.
Adrian pours oats into a large mixing bowl. Text reads, ¾ cup = 175ml. Adrian adds flour to the bowl. Text reads, ½ cup = 125ml. Lisa scoops ground flax out of a jar. Text reads, 2tbsp = 30ml.
Lisa says, NEXT, WE'LL ADD HALF A
TEASPOON OF GROUND NUTMEG.
She adds nutmeg to the bowl. Text reads, ½ tsp = 2.5ml.
Lisa says, NEXT CINNAMON AND THAT
IS OUR DRY INGREDIENTS.
She adds cinnamon to the bowl. Text reads, 2 tsp = 10ml.
Lisa says, NOW, WE'LL MOVE ONTO
THE WET INGREDIENTS.
She scoops an ingredient into a mug. Adrian puts the mug in the microwave. Text reads, ¼ cup = 60ml.
Lisa says, FIRST THING WE NEED TO DO IS
MELT ONE QUARTER CUP COCONUT
OIL.
Adrian starts the microwave. Lisa pours applesauce into a measuring cup. Text reads, ¼ cup = 60ml.
Lisa says, THEN WE MIX THE COCONUT OIL WITH
APPLESAUCE, HONEY, VANILLA AND
ONE EGG.
Adrian adds honey to a mixing bowl. Text reads, ¼ cup = 60ml. Lisa pours vanilla in the bowl. Text reads, 1 tsp = 5ml. Lisa cracks an egg into the bowl. Text reads, 1. Adrian mixes the wet ingredients together with a fork, then pours them into the large, dry ingredient mixing bowl.
Lisa says, WE POUR THE LIQUID INTO THE DRY
INGREDIENTS, THEN ADD CARROTS.
Adrian mixes shredded carrots with the other ingredients. Text reads, ¾ cup = 175ml.
Lisa says, SPREAD OUT THE MIXTURE INTO
A THIN LAYER AND BAKE FOR 25
MINUTES.
She spreads the mixture into a parchment paper lined baking pan and slides it in the oven. Adrian closes the oven. Text reads, 25 mins at 350°F = 175°C. Later, Lisa slides the baked granola bar out of the pan and onto a cutting board.
Shakira says, SOMETHING SMELLS
VERY GOOD IN HERE.
She joins Lisa and Adrian at the island.
She asks, WHAT HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN MAKING?
Lisa says, OUR CARROT GRANOLA BARS.
YOU'RE JUST IN
TIME TO TRY SOME.
Shakira claps and says, YAY!
Lisa says, DOESN'T IT LOOK
GOOD, ADRIAN?
Adrian says, OF COURSE.
Lisa cuts the granola bar into pieces.
Shakira says, WOW IT'S REALLY COOL THAT YOU
MADE A GRANOLA BAR AT HOME.
Lisa says, I KNOW.
She gives Shakira a piece of the bar.
She says, FOR YOU.
Shakira says, THANK YOU.
Lisa gives Adrian a piece.
She says, FOR YOU.
Adrian says, THANK YOU.
[Laughing]
Lisa takes a piece and says, AND FOR ME!
OKAY.
Shakira says, CHEERS.
Adrian says, CHEERS.
The trio tap their granola bars together.
[Laughing]
The try the bars. Lisa nods.
Shakira says, MMM.
VERY GOOD.
Lisa says, MM-HMM.
Adrian says, THESE ARE PROBABLY THE BEST
GRANOLA BARS I'VE EVER TASTED.
Lisa says, WOW!
LOOK AT US GO.
HIGH FIVE.
She high gives Adrian.
She says, LOOK AT US GO.
I'M VERY HAPPY.
Adrian smiles. Lisa grabs their beeswax wraps.
She says, OKAY.
SO, NOW WE CAN WRAP THEM IN
THE BEESWAX PAPER THAT WE MADE.
Adrian says, OKAY.
Lisa says, GRAB A BAR.
She places a granola bar in her beeswax wrap paper.
She says, FOLD IT OVER.
She folds the paper over the bar.
Lisa says, SO REALLY, LIKE, THE BEESWAX
COMBINED WITH THE HEAT FROM YOUR
HAND IS WHAT MAKES
IT NICE AND STICKY.
She presses and folds the edges of the wrap together so they stick.
Shakira says, AND THEN YOU CAN REUSE THEM.
Lisa says, EXACTLY, YEAH.
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS RUN IT
UNDER COLD WATER AND THEN IT'S
GOOD TO BE REUSED AGAIN.
Shakira says, WOW.
Adrian says, THIS IS LIKE SCIENCE
CLASS BUT IT'S FUN.
[Lisa and Shakira laughing]
Lisa packs other food containers in a lunch bag.
She narrates, HOT LEFTOVERS, YOGOURT AND FRUIT
COMPLETE OUR ZERO WASTE LUNCH.
Lisa and Adrian pack the folded granola bars in the lunch bag.
Adrian comments, IF EVERYONE AT MY SCHOOL DID THE
SAME, LIKE THE LUNCHBOX IDEA,
THE AMOUNT OF PLASTIC WE'LL SEE
IS GONNA GET REDUCED BY SO MUCH
AND THAT WOULD BE
REALLY COOL TO SEE.
[Funky music plays]
The Green Squad members dance. Text reads, Green Beat.
Lisa narrates, ADRIAN'S LUNCHBOX IDEA
WOULD BE SUPER COOL.
IF EVERYONE AT HIS SCHEDULE
PACKED A ZERO WASTE LUNCH THE
AMOUNT OF PLASTIC SAVED DURING
JUST ONE SCHOOL YEAR WOULD BE
OVER 9 THOUSAND KILOGRAMS.
In a picture, Lisa looks shocked.
She narrates, THAT'S ABOUT THE
WEIGHT OF 18 POLAR BEARS.
POLAR BEARS ARE JUST ONE OF
THE ANIMALS EFFECTED BY PLASTIC
WASTE.
In a field, a cow nudges a piece of garbage.
Lisa narrates, ZERO WASTE LUNCHES HELP KEEP
OCEANS AND BEACHES CLEANER, AND
THEY REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF
PLASTIC THAT CAN TAKE UP TO 500
YEARS TO BREAK
DOWN IN LANDFILLS.
YOU COULD EVEN CHALLENGE YOUR
WHOLE SCHOOL TO GET IN ON THE
ACTION.
Lisa cuts another granola bar.
She narrates, OUR HOMEMADE GRANOLA BARS COULD
ALSO BECOME A SCHOOL LUNCHBOX
FAVOURITE.
THEY ARE EPICALLY DELICIOUS.
[Funky music plays]
Kyle, Lisa and Shakira chase after Adrian as he skateboards down a sidewalk.
A person says, GREEN SQUAD.
In the dining room, Kyle and Adrian sit at the table.
He says, ALL RIGHT.
LET'S TALK ABOUT
HOW YOU GET SCHOOL.
Kyle opens a laptop.
He says, SO, HERE'S A QUESTION.
HOW ARE YOU GETTING THERE NOW?
A map shows Adrian’s house and school.
Adrian says, WELL, I RIDE WITH MY PARENTS IN
THEIR CAR TO GET TO SCHOOL.
Kyle says, DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE'S OVER
200 MILLION CARS IN NORTH
AMERICA
RIGHT NOW AND THEY'RE PRODUCING
A BUNCH OF GREENHOUSE GASES?
SO, WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO IS
REDUCE OUR EMISSIONS AND MAKE
SURE THAT WE DON'T CAUSE NOISE
POLLUTION AND AIR POLLUTION IN
OUR CITY.
SO, IT SOUNDS LIKE WE'RE GONNA
HAVE TO FIND SOME LOWER CARBON
WAYS TO GET YOU TO SCHOOL.
ANY IDEAS?
Adrian says, WE COULD WALK?
Kyle says, LET'S SEE HOW FAR AWAY YOUR
HOUSE IS FROM THE SCHOOL.
The map shows a line that connects Adrian’s house to the school.
Adrian says, IT LOOKS LIKE WE ARE
SIX KILOMETRES AWAY.
Text reads, 6km = 3.75 miles. Elsewhere in the house, Adrian walks on a treadmill.
Kyle says, LET'S TEST HOW FAST
YOU'RE WALKING RIGHT NOW.
Text reads, Walking test. Kyle looks at the treadmill.
He says, LOOKS LIKE IT'S ABOUT
2 KILOMETRES AN HOUR?
Text reads, 2km/hr = 1.25 miles/hr.
Adrian says, THIS IS PRETTY SLOW.
I CAN DEFINITELY GO FASTER.
He increases the speed of the treadmill.
[Beeping]
Kyle says, ALL RIGHT.
HOW DO WE FEEL?
Adrian walks faster.
He says, THIS IS KIND OF LESS THAN NORMAL
WALKING SO I THINK WE CAN BUMP
IT UP A BIT.
Kyle says, A LITTLE BIT FASTER AND WE'RE
GOING 3.2 KILOMETRES.
Adrian increases the treadmill speed.
[Beeping]
Text reads, 3.2km/hr = 2 miles/hr.
Kyle says, AND NOW
WE'RE AT 5.
The speed of the treadmill increases. Adrian walks faster. Text reads, 5km/hr = 3.1 miles/hr.
Adrian says, THIS IS
DEFINITELY SPEED WALKING.
Kyle says, SO, I'M THINKING IT'S GONNA TAKE
YOU SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THREE AND
FOUR KILOMETRES TO YOUR WALKING
SPEED.
Adrian stops the treadmill.
Kyle says, AND IF WE THINK ABOUT A
SIX KILOMETRE WALK TO GET TO
SCHOOL....THAT'S A LOT OF TIME.
IT'S GONNA TAKE YOU ANYWHERE
BETWEEN AN HOUR AND A HALF TO 2
HOURS.
Adrian nods and says, THAT IS A LOT.
Kyle says, WE GOTTA FIND
SOMETHING FASTER.
Adrian says, YEAH.
[Upbeat music plays]
Traffic flows through a city.
Kyle narrates, IN A CITY THERE ARE USUALLY TWO
OTHER WAYS TO GET AROUND THAT
POLLUTE LESS THAN A CAR.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION LIKE THE
BUS…
At the dining table, Adrian looks at the laptop.
He says, LET'S CHECK.
A line connects Adrian’s house to his school. Text reads, 1 hour.
Kyle says, OOH.
Adrian says, AN HOUR.
Kyle narrates, …OR A BICYCLE.
A new route connects the house and school. Text reads, 25 minutes.
Adrian says, 25 MINUTES.
Kyle says, THAT IS PERFECT.
IT'S FAST AND WE'RE NOT USING
ANY UNNECESSARY GREENHOUSE GASES
BUT I THINK THERE'S SOMEBODY
WE GOTTA CHECK WITH FIRST.
Adrian’s dad stands between Kyle and Adrian.
Kyle says, WE'RE WONDERING HOW
ADRIAN'S GONNA GET THERE.
IF THAT'S WITH YOU
OR IS THAT'S ALONE?
Adrian’s dad says, SO, AT THE BEGINNING I'M
GONNA BE WITH HIM AND WHEN I'M
CONFIDENT I THINK HE
CAN TRAVEL BY HIMSELF.
THERE'S ONLY 2, 3, STREETS
THAT HE NEEDS TO BE SO CAUTIOUS.
OTHER THAN THAT HE CAN USE THE
BIKE PATH AND TAKE THE VERY SAFE
PLACE BESIDE THE CANAL.
Kyle says, THAT'S AWESOME.
He high fives Adrian. Outside, he rides a bike down the street with Adrian and Adrian’s dad.
[Cheerful music plays]
Adrian, his dad, and Kyle ride their bikes down a bike path.
Kyle says, I BET IF YOU DID THIS EVERY
SINGLE DAY YOU'D PROBABLY BE A
LITTLE HEALTHIER AND YOUR
TIME WOULD JUST GET FASTER AND
FASTER.
WHICH MEANS MAYBE THIS TIME IT
MIGHT BE 35 MINUTES BUT BY THE
END OF THE YEAR YOU
MIGHT GET DOWN TO 20.
AS WELL, EXERCISE BEFORE
GETTING TO SCHOOL ALSO HELPS YOU
CONCENTRATE A LITTLE MORE.
Adrian asks, REALLY?
Kyle says, YEAH, A SCIENTIFIC STUDY
PROVED IT.
Adrian says, OH, NO WAY.
An animated brain jogs on a treadmill.
Kyle says, THERE IT IS.
Adrian OH YEAH, IT'S RIGHT
THERE.
He bikes over a bridge to the edge of a busy street.
Kyle says, WE DID IT!
Adrian says, YEAH!
Kyle and Adrian’s dad stop their bikes beside Adrian’s.
Adrian says, SCHOOL'S RIGHT THERE AND WE
GOT HERE IN HOW MUCH TIME?
Adrian’s dad checks his watch.
He says, 26 MINUTES SHARP.
Kyle says, 26 MINUTES.
SO, THE QUESTION IS DO YOU
THINK YOU CAN DO THIS EVERYDAY?
Adrian says, ABSOLUTELY AND IF IT SNOWS OR IF
IT RAINS MAYBE I'LL STILL GO A BITT, BUT
SOMETIMES I MIGHT
CARPOOL WITH MY DAD.
IF THAT'S OKAY?
Kyle says, THAT'S PERFECT!
EVEN IF YOU CAN'T DO IT EVERYDAY
AND YOU'RE JUST DOING IT HALF
THE TIME YOU'RE STILL SAVING
HALF OF YOUR CAR RIDES WORTH OF
CARBON SO DOING IT AS MUCH AS
YOU CAN MAKES A BIG IMPACT.
Adrian nods and smiles. He bikes back to the house, where Lisa and Shakira stand on the sidewalk.
Lisa and Shakira say, HEY!
Adrian says, HI!
Kyle follows Adrian down the street.
Lisa asks, HOW WAS IT?
Adrian says, IT WAS AMAZING.
Kyle says, AND IT ONLY TAKES 25
MINUTES.
Lisa says, GOSH, THAT'S SO QUICK.
Shakira says, YEAH!
SO, NOW IT'S TIME TO
TACKLE OUR NEXT CHALLENGE.
BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING.
Kyle says to Adrian, IT'S BEEN GREAT
RIDING WITH YOU MAN.
Adrian says, SAME TO YOU.
He fist bumps Kyle.
[Funky music plays]
The Green Squad members dance. Text reads, Green Beat.
Kyle narrates, PEDAL POWER CAN GET YOU AROUND
TOWN AND HELP REDUCE CARBON
EMISSIONS BUT HOW ABOUT
PEDALLING THAT DOESN'T GET YOU
ANYWHERE BUT ALSO SAVES ENERGY?
A person rides a stationary bike.
Kyle narrates, THERE'S A ROCK BAND THAT CAME
UP WITH A SUPER SMART WAY TO USE
PEDAL POWER TO CREATE
ENERGY FOR CONCERTS.
FANS PEDAL STATIONARY BIKES THAT
ARE SET UP AROUND THE STAGE.
THE ENERGY CREATED BY THAT PEDAL
POWER IS STORED IN RECYCLED
RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES THAT
POWER THE LIGHTS, INSTRUMENTS
AND MICROPHONES. IT'S A
CLEANER, GREENER WAY TO ROCK
OUT.
[Rock music plays]
[Funky music plays]
Adrian rollerblades down a sidewalk. The three Green Squad members run after him.
A person says, GREEN SQUAD.
In Adrian’s closet, Adrian hands Shakira a hanger with a pair of jeans.
Shakira narrates, ADRIAN USUALLY BUYS SOME NEW
CLOTHES BEFORE HEADING BACK TO
SCHOOL.
THIS YEAR HE WANTS
TO BUY MUCH LESS.
She lays jeans and other clothes out on Adrian’s bed. Adrian climbs onto the bed. Shakira takes a seat on the corner.
She says, THESE ARE YOUR CLOTHES
FROM LAST YEAR RIGHT?
Adrian says, YES.
Shakira asks, DO THEY STILL FIT YOU?
Adrian says, I MEAN.
I FEEL LIKE I'VE OUTGROWN MY
PANTS AND SOON ENOUGH I'LL
OUTGROW EVERYTHING.
ALL MY UNIFORM.
WOULDN'T IT BE COOL IF WE COULD
REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF CLOTHES
THAT WE HAVE TO BUY?
Shakira says, YEAH THAT WOULD BE REALLY COOL.
Adrian types a text message.
Shakira narrates, THERE'S SOMETHING WE COULD DO TO
NOT ONLY REDUCE BUT REUSE WHAT
WE ALREADY HAVE.
Adrian sits at the top of a staircase while on his phone. A message reads, Clothing swap?
Adrian says, WE CAN HAVE A CLOTHING SWAP.
Text messages read, Ok!!, Can’t wait, So Fun!!.
Shakira says, GRAB YOUR MOM'S PHONE AND INVITE
ALL YOUR FRIENDS FROM SCHOOL.
Other text messages read, Yay! Clothes swap!, Epic.
Talking on the phone, Adrian says, BRING ALL THE OLD CLOTHES THAT
YOU HAVE AND STUFF THAT DOESN'T
FIT ANYMORE.
ALL RIGHT?
Lisa and Shakira bring clothes on a clothing rack into the living room.
Shakira narrates, BUYING NEW CLOTHES EVERY YEAR IS
VERY EXPENSIVE IN ITS OWN, BUT THE
CLOTHES INDUSTRY ITSELF IS
EXPENSIVE IN MANY DIFFERENT
WAYS.
She and Lisa high five. They set up a mirror in the living room.
Shakira narrates, PRODUCTION OF THESE CLOTHES
CAUSES AIR AND WATER POLLUTION
AND SHIPPING THEM AROUND
THE WORLD PRODUCES A LOT OF
GREENHOUSE GASES.
[Doorbell ringing]
Text reads, Ding Dong. Lisa and Shakira stand behind a table.
Lisa says, HI!
Shakira says, HI!
WELCOME!
A person says, HI! HERE'S ALL THE STUFF I BROUGHT.
A woman with long, dark brown hair puts a large bag of clothes on the table.
Shakira says, OH, WOW!
THAT'S A LOT.
The brown haired woman says, THANK YOU.
Lisa says, WELCOME TO SWAP.
Folded clothes are laid out on the table.
Shakira narrates, SWAP RULES ARE SIMPLE.
GIVE ANYTHING YOU DON'T NEED
AND PICK ANYTHING YOU LIKE.
At the table, she says, OH, YOU BROUGHT A
BACKPACK TOO?
A brown haired girl says, YEAH.
Shakira says, THAT'S REALLY COOL.
SEE, YOU CAN DO THINGS
WITH NOT JUST CLOTHES.
YOU CAN DO SHOES AND YOU COULD
DO BAGS AND YOU COULD ALWAYS DO
THINGS LIKE BINDERS, MAYBE
MARKERS, ANYTHING REALLY.
ANYTHING FOR BACK TO
SCHOOL YOU CAN DO.
Adrian folds some clothing pieces.
Shakira asks, WHAT ARE YOU HOPING TO FIND
TODAY AT THE CLOTHING SWAP?
The brown haired girl says, UM.
I'D LIKE TO HAVE
SOME SKIRTS, MAYBE.
Shakira says, SOME SKIRTS?
The brown haired girl says, YEAH.
Shakira says, THAT'S GOOD, WHAT ABOUT YOU?
A black haired boy says, UM, A SWEATER.
Shakira says, FEEL FREE TO BROWSE.
THERE'S SOME SWEATERS THERE.
THERE'S SOME BLAZERS.
A long haired girl picks up a skirt.
Shakira says, OH, THAT SKIRTS REALLY
CUTE FOR SCHOOL.
The long haired girl says, YEAH.
A heart appears that reads, Cute!. The black haired boy looks at a sweater.
Shakira says, YOU FOUND A LOT!
The black haired boy says, I THINK, YEAH.
Shakira says, GOOD!
Lisa says, YOU DID WELL, FOR SURE.
Raffi stands in front of the mirror. Shakira hands Adrian a pair of black pants.
She says, KEEP THESE.
Adrian says, ALL RIGHT.
Shakira says, LET'S SEE, ANYTHING
ELSE WE NEED?
She looks through the clothing rack. Adrian tries on a blazer.
Shakira says, NICE AND THEN WE
HAVE THE NEW PANTS.
LET'S SEE HOW
THESE ARE GONNA LOOK.
Adrian holds the black pants against his chest, the length reaches the floor.
Shakira says, YEAH.
WE'RE DEFINITELY GONNA
HAVE TO PIN THESE UP.
Adrian says, YEAH.
He wears the pants. Shakira folds the leg openings into themselves so they fit Adrian.
Shakira says, ALTERATIONS TO CLOTHES ARE GREAT
BECAUSE YOU CAN EXTEND THE LIFE
OF THE PANTS OR WHATEVER
CLOTHING YOU'RE USING AND WHEN
YOU GROW YOU CAN JUST LET OUT
THE HEM AND THEN THEY'LL BE
LONGER.
The kids look at themselves in the mirror with new clothing items. The brown haired girl wears a blue cardigan.
Shakira says, VERY NICE.
EVERYTHING WORKED OUT GREAT.
The black haired boy wears a striped shirt.
Shakira says, PERFECT.
OH, I LOVE THIS OUTFIT.
The long haired girl wears a grey shirt with a black and white skirt.
Shakira says, VERY
MUCH!
Lisa says, OH, MATCHING!
Shakira says, VERY NICE.
A short haired boy wears a grey and blue sweater.
Lisa says, THAT WAS AWESOME.
CUTE SWEATER.
VERY CUTE.
Shakira says, RIGHT?
Another girl wears a blue hooded sweater. A blond haired girl poses wearing a sweater.
A person says, I LOVE IT.
Adrian looks at the blazer he wears.
A person says, I LOVE YOUR OUTFIT.
Another says, IT’S SO CUTE.
Shakira says, IT FITS YOU WAY
BETTER THAN BEFORE.
GREAT.
Adrian waves to himself in the mirror, then steps away.
At the table, he asks, DO YOU GUYS WANT TO TRY
SOME GRANOLA BARS THAT WE MADE?
A person says, OH YEAH.
The kids at the swap try the homemade granola bars.
A person says, WOW.
Shakira says, AREN'T THEY GOOD?
People say, YEAH!
Lisa asks, DO YOU FEEL BACK
TO SCHOOL READY?
A person says, YEAH, KIND OF.
[Laughing]
Adrian says, I FOUND A NEW BLAZER.
Lisa says, MM-HMM.
IT LOOKS VERY GOOD.
A person says, YEAH, IT DOES.
Lisa adds, YOU LOOK VERY
SOPHISTICATED.
VERY SPIFFY.
IT LOOKS GREAT.
Shakira asks, HOW DOES IT FEEL THAT YOU GOT TO
KIND OF SHARE YOUR CLOTHES WITH
YOUR FRIENDS AND THEN THEY GOT
TO KIND OF SHARE THEIRS WITH
YOU?
Adrian says, WELL, IT WAS COOL TO SEE MY
FRIENDS AGAIN BUT I'M RELIEVED
THAT WE DIDN'T HAVE TO SPEND AS
MUCH MONEY AS WE NORMALLY DO.
Shakira says, AND LESS WASTE RIGHT?
LESS CLOTHES GOING INTO
LANDFILLS AND LESS PRODUCTION
WASTE AND ANY OF THE CLOTHES
THAT HAVE NOT BEEN TAKEN WE CAN
BRING TO THE THRIFT STORE AND
THEN SOMEONE ELSE CAN USE FOR
BACK TO SCHOOL, RIGHT?
People say, YEAH!
[Funky music plays]
The Green Squad members dance. Text reads, Green Beat.
Shakira narrates, POP QUIZ!
WHAT DO FABRICS AND
PLASTICS HAVE IN COMMON?
WELL, THEY RHYME IN CASE YOU
WANT TO WRITE A POEM OR A SONG.
SYNTHETIC FABRICS, LIKE THE ONES
USED IN MOST SCHOOL UNIFORMS,
ARE MADE FROM PLASTIC.
EVERY TIME WE WASH THEM TINY
PLASTIC FIBRES SHED OFF OF OUR
CLOTHES AND INTO THE WATER.
THEY'RE CALLED MICRO-PLASTICS
AND CLOSE TO HALF OF THEM END UP
IN THE OCEAN.
Plastic floats on the surface of the ocean.
Shakira continues, WE CAN HELP REDUCE MICRO-PLASTIC
POLLUTION BY ONLY WASHING
CLOTHES WHEN WE REALLY NEED TO.
IS IT STAINED OR STINKY?
People say, EW!
Shakira narrates, YEAH.
YOU BETTER WASH THAT.
OTHERWISE IT'S READY TO GO
AT LEAST ONE MORE ROUND.
[Funky music plays]
Kyle jumps on a trampoline. Shakira, Lisa and Adrian run around him.
A person says, GREEN SQUAD.
In the living room, Lisa says, SO, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT
BACK TO SCHOOL THIS YEAR?
Adrian says, WELL, MORE CONFIDENT
THAN EVER.
NOW THAT KYLE SHOWED ME
HOW TO GET TO SCHOOL IN AN
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY WAY.
IT'S WAY FUNNER AND SOMETHING
THAT I COULD DEFINITELY DO ON A
DAILY.
ALSO, THE NEW SNACKS WE MADE,
AMAZING.
Shakira says, YEAH.
Adrian says, THE GRANOLA BARS; SOMETHING I
WOULD DEFINITELY MAKE AGAIN.
Lisa says, PERFECT.
Shakira says, YEAH.
ZERO WASTE LUNCH.
Lisa says, AND HOW ABOUT THESE
NEW CLOTHES YOU HAVE ON?
Shakira says, YEAH COME ON!
Lisa says, THE BACK TO SCHOOL SWAP.
Adrian spins in his new blazer.
Lisa says, YUP, YOU, OKAY, OKAY.
[Lisa and Shakira clapping]
[Shakira laughing]
Adrian says, IT WAS AMAZING.
EVERYONE FOUND SOMETHING THAT
THEY WERE LOOKING FOR AND THEY
LEFT HAPPY.
Shakira says, YEAH AND YOU CAN EVEN TAKE IT
ONE STEP FURTHER AND PROPOSE A
SCHOOL WIDE UNIFORM SWAP.
Adrian says, THAT'S A REALLY
GOOD IDEA.
Lisa says, SO, WE'LL BE CHECKING IN
WITH YOU IN A FEW MONTHS.
Shakira says, WHEN YOU'RE REALLY IN
THE SCHOOL ROUTINE.
Lisa says, TO SEE HOW EVERYTHING'S GOING
WITH THE BIKING AND THE ZERO
WASTE LUNCH AND
YOUR SCHOOL UNIFORM.
SO, GOOD LUCK AND WE'RE
REALLY ROOTING FOR YOU.
Shakira says, YEAH, WE HAD SO MUCH
FUN WITH YOU TODAY!
She and Lisa open their arms. Adrian hugs them both.
[Upbeat music plays]
The Green Squad makes a human pyramid. Text reads, Squad Tip. Lisa stands behind a table.
She says, I LOVE EATING WITH
FRIENDS AND FAMILY.
IT'S A GREAT WAY TO CONNECT,
CHAT AND JUST HAVE FUN.
WE SOMETIMES LIKE TO GO TO A
LOCAL RESTAURANT THAT HAS GREAT
FOOD BUT WE CAN'T ALWAYS FINISH
OUR FOOD BECAUSE THE PORTIONS
ARE ENORMOUS.
THEY'D BE PERFECT IF I WAS AN
OLYMPIC WEIGHT LIFTER BUT WE
DIDN'T WANT TO WASTE OUR
FOOD SO THE RESTAURANT GAVE US
POLYSTYRENE FOAM
TAKE-OUT CONTAINERS.
Lisa picks up a polystyrene foam take-out container.
She says, YIKES.
She puts the container back on the table.
She says, THE TROUBLE IS, AS I LATER
DISCOVERED, POLYSTYRENE FOAM
TAKES A REALLY LONG TIME TO
DECOMPOSE LIKE 500 YEARS.
SO, IT'S OBVIOUSLY NOT GREAT FOR
THE ENVIRONMENT SO I WANTED TO
FIND ANOTHER MORE
ECO-FRIENDLY METHOD.
I KNOW THAT WHEN I MAKE FOOD AT
HOME I USE REUSABLE CONTAINERS
FOR THE LEFTOVERS AND
PUT THEM IN THE FRIDGE.
Lisa picks up a glass, reusable container.
She says, SO, I FIGURED WHY NOT DO THE
SAME THING WITH THE FOOD FROM
RESTAURANTS.
She puts the container back on the table.
Lisa says, THE NEXT TIME WE WENT TO THE
RESTAURANT I USED A REUSABLE
CONTAINER AND MY FAMILY AND
I PUT OUR LEFTOVERS IN THERE
INSTEAD AND IT WORKED
GREAT, AND YOU COULD DO IT TOO.
JUST TELL THE
RESTAURANT HOLD THE POLYSTYRENE.
An X appears over the polystyrene foam container.
Lisa says, EVEN IF RESTAURANTS DO GIVE AWAY
TAKE-OUT CONTAINERS THAT USE
MATERIALS THAT DECOMPOSE, LIKE
PAPER OR CARDBOARD, YOU CAN DO
ONE BETTER BY JUST BRINGING
YOUR OWN CONTAINER AND SAVING ON
MATERIALS OVERALL.
YOU'LL FEEL SO MUCH BETTER
MUNCHING ON THAT PEPPERONI PIZZA
FOR BREAKFAST THE NEXT MORNING.
She grins.
[Upbeat music plays]
The Green Squad pose together. Text reads, Check-In. The Squad sits together in front of a tablet.
Lisa says, ADRIAN'S BEEN BACK IN
SCHOOL FOR A WHILE NOW.
LET'S CHECK IN TO
SEE HOW IT'S GOING.
In a video, Adrian says, ALL RIGHT.
SO, THIS IS WHAT I STARTED
PACKING FOR MY NEW WASTE FREE
LUNCH PROJECT.
WE GOT THESE BEESWAX WRAPS.
He shows beeswax wraps in a drawer and reaches into a draw of reusable containers.
Kyle says, THE TUPPERWARES!
Adrian says, THIS IS WHERE I PUT MY LUNCH.
He shows a packed lunch.
He says, I MADE SUSHI FOR MY LUNCH TODAY,
WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY ZERO WASTE.
Green Squad members say, WOW.
Eric says, OH MY GOODNESS!
Lisa says, OKAY!
Eric says, TASTY.
Lisa says, FANCY.
In the video, Adrian says, IT'S HARD AT FIRST BUT AS YOU
KEEP GOING IT GETS MUCH EASIER
AND YOU'LL GET
BETTER AS YOU GO ON.
Lisa says, HE'S DOING A GREAT JOB
WITH THE ZERO WASTE LUNCH.
EVERYTHING IN THERE
LOOKS LIKE IT CAN BE REUSED.
SO, THAT'S EXACTLY THE GOAL.
GREAT JOB.
Sigfried nods.
Eric says, I THINK IT'S GREAT THAT HE
HIGHLIGHTED THAT YOU'RE ALWAYS
IMPROVING.
THAT YOU'LL GET BETTER
AT THE ZERO WASTING.
Sigfried says, YEAH.
Lisa says, MM-HMM.
Shakira adds, AND HE'S HAVING FUN WITH IT HE'S
MAKING SUSHI AND NEW RECIPES
WHICH IS SO COOL.
Sigfried says, YEAH, AND NOW THAT HIS FRIENDS
MAY SEE HIM DOING IT AND HOW
MUCH HE ENJOYS IT AND HOW IT
BENEFITS HIM MAYBE THEY'LL TRY
IT TOO AND HE COULD
SPREAD THE MESSAGE.
In the video, Adrian walks through the living room.
He says, I REALLY, REALLY LOVED THE
IDEA OF BIKING TO SCHOOL.
IT'S A MORE ECO-FRIENDLY WAY BUT
I DON'T THINK I'M GONNA BE ABLE
TO DO IT.
His bike is against a wall with his dads.
Adrian says, THE TEST RIDE.
IT WAS REALLY, IT WAS FUN, IT
WORKED OUT BUT WITH THE WEIGHT
OF MY BAG I DON'T THINK WE'RE
GONNA BE ABLE TO DO IT THIS
YEAR.
IT'S STARTING TO GET COLD.
He reaches for his backpack.
He says, SO, AS YOU CAN SEE,
THERE'S MY COMPUTER IN THERE.
IT GETS REALLY CROWDED IN THERE
AND IT GETS REALLY HEAVY FOR ME.
WE MIGHT TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORT.
THAT'S A VERY BIG POSSIBILITY.
NEXT YEAR I'M SURE WE
COULD START TO MAKE CHANGES.
Kyle says, SO, EVEN THOUGH IT DIDN'T WORK
OUT THIS TIME, I THINK HE REALLY
WANTS TO MAKE A
DIFFERENCE, RIGHT?
AND I THINK THAT'S THE
MOST IMPORTANT PART.
BECAUSE HE DID SAY THAT HE
WANTED TO TRY THIS AGAIN NEXT
YEAR AND MAYBE WHEN HE'S A
LITTLE BIGGER THAT BAG MIGHT BE
A LITTLE BIT LIGHTER OR ALSO
ANOTHER GREAT IDEA IS MAYBE HE
CAN TRY A BASKET ON
THE FRONT OF IT RIGHT?
Eric says, MM-HMM.
Kyle continues, RATHER THAN CARRYING IT ON
YOUR BACK AND LIKE "UGH".
He leans forward.
He says, YOU KNOW?
Sigfried says, YEAH.
Kyle says, IT MIGHT MAKE THE
COMMUTE A LITTLE EASIER.
Shakira says, I'M STILL REALLY PROUD OF HIM
BECAUSE HE DEFINITELY RECOGNIZES
WHAT HE WANTS TO DO AND HE'S
JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT A PLAN
SO THAT HE COULD
PUT IT INTO ACTION .
Sigfried says, MM-HMM.
In the video, Adrian opens his closet.
He says, ALL RIGHT.
SO, THIS IS THE
INSIDE OF MY CLOSET AFTER.
I'M GLAD WE DID THIS BECAUSE
I GOT TO GIVE MY CLOTHES TO
SOMEONE ELSE.
MY UNIFORM AND I GOT
SOMEONE ELSE'S UNIFORM.
WHAT I LIKE THE BEST ABOUT THE
CLOTHING SWAP IS THAT I GOT TO
SEE A TON OF MY FRIENDS THERE
WHILE AT THE SAME TIME DOING
SOMETHING THAT WAS ECO-FRIENDLY
SO IT WAS KIND OF A WIN-WIN.
[Soft laughing]
Kyle nods.
Shakira says, I'M SO GLAD THAT HE LIKED THE
CLOTHING SWAP BECAUSE THE WHOLE
POINT OF IT WAS FOR HIM TO SPEND
TIME WITH HIS FRIENDS THAT HE
LOVED AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
SO, I'M REALLY GLAD THAT HE WAS
ABLE TO MIX SUSTAINABILITY WITH
HANGING OUT WITH FRIENDS.
Sigfried nods.
Adrian says, I DEFINITELY DO THINK THAT THE
SQUAD HAS HELPED ME OPEN MY EYES
WHICH WAS REALLY GREAT.
I APPRECIATED EVERY
SINGLE MOMENT OF THAT.
THEY'RE VERY NICE PEOPLE.
WHO HELPED ME A LOT.
I'M VERY GRATEFUL FOR THAT.
He smiles.
Shakira says, ADRIAN, YOU MADE BACK
TO SCHOOL REALLY COOL.
The entire Green Squad says, GO ADRIAN!
[Upbeat music plays]
A person says, WHEE!
Text reads, tvo kids.
