Transcript: Hannabelle
A child says, WHEEE!
Colourful text reads, “tvo kids” plus “Apartment Eleven Productions,” “Original.” A purple circle with a ring attached to each side appears over “Apartment Eleven.”
[Child giggles]
Kyle, Lisa, and Eric sit on a park bench facing a large body of water. Lisa peers through binoculars.
[Water sloshes, upbeat music plays]
Lisa says, IT'S SO AWESOME THESE
SPECIES HAVE BEEN TAKEN OFF THE
ENDANGERED SPECIES LIST.
HUMPBACK WHALES.
SOUTHERN WHITE RHINOS.
Kyle says, CONSERVATION EFFORTS
CAN DEFINITELY WORK.
BALD EAGLES.
GIANT PANDAS.
Eric looks through the binoculars and sees a plastic bag stuck in a tree.
[Dramatic music plays]
He says, FLOOPY FLOPPY BAG CREATURES?
Lisa and Kyle say, WHAT?
[Upbeat music plays]
Eric says, NOW, THAT IS DEFINITELY A
SPECIES THAT NEEDS TO GO EXTINCT.
Lisa asks, READY TO HELP
HANNABELLE MAKE IT HAPPEN?
Eric says, ABSOLUTELY.
Kyle says, SURE.
[Upbeat music plays]

White text reads, “TVOKIDS presents.” Below that, green text with dark green dots reads, “Green.” Below that, pink text reads, “Squad.” The Green Squad poses beneath the text.
Electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
Hannabelle sits on a grey couch. Her long, curly black hair reaches her chin. She wears pink-framed glasses, a blue shirt with a white shirt over top. Pink text beneath her reads, “Hannabelle.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Hannabelle says, HI.
I'M HANNABELLE AND
I'M TEN YEARS OLD.
Hannabelle plays soccer with a young girl. The girl wears her black hair in a ponytail gathered at the top of her head. A thin young man with short black hair watches them chase the ball.
[Screech]
Hannabelle says, I LIVE WITH MY
MOM, MY DAD AND MY TWO
BROTHERS AND MY LITTLE SISTER.
WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE A
VETERINARIAN BECAUSE I LOVE
ANIMALS AND I WANT TO
PROTECT THEM AND HELP THEM.
THE BOOK I'M WRITING IS CALLED
LOST IN PARADISE AND IT'S ABOUT
THIS GIRL THAT GETS LOST,
BASICALLY, IN THE RAINFOREST AND
SHE MEETS DIFFERENT ANIMALS.
SOME DANGEROUS. SOME NOT
SO DANGEROUS.
I REALLY WANT TO HELP ANIMALS
AND I REALLY WANT TO STOP
PLASTIC POLLUTION.
IF YOU WERE TO THROW LITTER OR
PLASTIC ON THE GROUND IT WOULD
BREAK DOWN AND ANIMALS WOULD
PROBABLY THINK THAT IT WAS
PROBABLY SOME FOOD AND IF THEY
WOULD SWALLOW IT, IT WOULD
EFFECT THEIR HEALTH.
I REALLY WANT TO GET INVOLVED
IN LOCAL WILDLIFE PROJECTS.
Text beside Hannabelle reads, “Help me out!”
Hannabelle says, HEY SQUAD!
HELP ME OUT!
Kyle, Lisa, and Eric walk down a street.
[Upbeat music plays]
Lisa says, YOU KNOW, I'M SO IMPRESSED
THAT HANNABELLE ALREADY KNOWS
WHAT SHE WANT TO BE WHEN SHE
GROWS UP.
Kyle says, YEP, SHE'S GOT IT
ALL FIGURED OUT.
Eric rings a doorbell and Hannabelle opens a door.
[Doorbell rings, door creaks]
Hannabelle says, HI.
Eric, Lisa, and Kyle say, HI.
Text reads, “Hi.” “Hey Hi!”
[Popping]
Hannabelle says, COME ON IN.
Lisa says, THANK YOU.
Kyle says, THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Hannabelle says, SO, THIS IS MY FAMILY.
Everyone says, HI!
Kyle says, NICE TO MEET YOU.
Hannabelle’s mother says, NICE TO MEET YOU TOO.
A red arrow points to Hannabelle’s mother. Purple text reads, “Mom.” A yellow arrow points to Hannabelle’s father. Green text reads, “Dad.”
Hannabelle says, THIS IS MY MOM.
THIS IS MY DAD.
THIS IS MY LITTER BROTHER BEN
ARTHUR AND THIS IS MY LITTLE
SISTER ARABELLE.
An orange arrow points to Ben. Green text reads, “Brother Ben Arthur.” A pink arrow points to Arabelle as she peers curiously from behind Ben Arthur. Light orange text reads, “Sister Arabelle.”
Lisa says, SO, HANNABELLE, I KNOW
YOU DON'T HAVE ANY PETS BUT WE
HEARD THAT YOU LOVE ANIMALS.
Hannabelle says, YES, AND I'M WRITING
A BOOK ABOUT THEM.
[Upbeat music plays]
Lisa says, WELL, WE'VE BEEN DOING
SOME RESEARCH OF OUR OWN...
Eric says, AND WE WOULD LIKE TO HELP
YOU HELP THE LOCAL WILDLIFE.
Eric stands beside Hannabelle in her backyard. He looks through the binoculars.
Eric asks, SO, IS THERE ANY
WILD BEASTS HERE?
Hannabelle says, NO, NOT REALLY.
Eric says, YEAH, I CAN'T IMAGINE SO.
Lisa says, THERE ARE PROBABLY MORE
ANIMALS IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS THAN
YOU REALIZE.
THERE CAN BE SKUNKS, SQUIRRELS
OR EVEN FOXES AT NIGHT BUT
THEY'RE HARD TO SEE IN THE DARK.
[Popping]
Eric asks, SO, WHAT ABOUT BIRDS?
Hannabelle says, I'VE TRIED ATTRACTING
BIRDS IN MY BACKYARD WITH SEEDS
BUT IT DIDN'T GO QUITE AS PLANNED.
SOME WERE EATEN BUT I DON'T
THINK IT WAS BY BIRDS.
IT WAS PROBABLY BY
SQUIRRELS OR SOMETHING.
Eric says, SQUIRRELS.
SQUIRRELS, THEY LIKE TO
EAT EVERYTHING DON'T THEY?
Hannabelle says, YUP.
[Upbeat music plays]
Eric says, WELL, HANNABELLE,
I KNOW A PLACE WHERE WE CAN
GET UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
WITH BIRDS. IT'S GONNA BE A
LOT OF FUN. READY?
Hannabelle says, OKAY.
Eric says, ALL RIGHT, LET'S GET…
LET'S GET GOING.
[Upbeat music plays]
The electronic voice says, GREEN SQUAD.
[Upbeat music plays]
Birds perch on a branch in an enclosure.
[Birds sing, upbeat music plays]
Eric narrates, THE BIRDS DIDN'T
COME TO HANNABELLE, SO WE'RE
BRINGING HANNABELLE TO THE BIRDS.
Eric says, SO, HANNABELLE, WELCOME
TO THE OTTAWA VALLEY WILD BIRD
CARE CENTRE AND HERE'S PATTY.
Hannabelle says, HI.
A pink arrow points to Patty. Yellow text reads, “Patty.” Orange text beneath that reads, “Education Program Manager.” Patty has short light brown hair. She wears a navy blue shirt with a name tag pinned over her heart.
Patty says, SO NICE TO MEET
YOU, WELCOME.
Hannabelle says, NICE TO MEET YOU TOO.
SO, THE OTTAWA VALLEY WILD BIRD
CARE CENTRE IS THE ONLY PLACE
HERE IN THE OTTAWA AREA THAT CAN
TAKE IN ANY INJURED OR ORPHANED,
OR SICK WILD BIRDS.
WE SEE OVER A HUNDRED AND
TWENTY DIFFERENT KINDS OF BIRDS
EVERY YEAR.
SO, WE NEVER KNOW WHAT'S GONNA
WALK IN THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR.
A purple arrow points to Indigo. Dark orange text reads, “American Kestrel.”
Patty says, SO, THIS IS INDIGO.
INDIGO IS AN AMERICAN KESTREL.
HE'S THE SMALLEST SPECIES
OF FALCON IN NORTH AMERICA.
Hannabelle asks, WHAT DOES INDIGO EAT?
[Flapping, upbeat music continues]
Patty replies, REALLY GREAT QUESTION.
SO, AS A FALCON, HE'S A BIRD OF PREY.
SO HE'S EATING OTHER ANIMALS BUT
BECAUSE HE'S SO SMALL HE EATS A
LOT OF INSECTS. IT'S LIKE A LITTLE
APPETIZER FOR INDIGO.
[Patty chuckles]
Hannabelle uses tweezers to feed Indigo an insect. Text beside Indigo reads, “Yum.” Eric feeds Indigo. Text next to Indigo reads, “Hey! That’s for me!”
Patty says, INDIGO'S DIFFERENT BECAUSE
HE'S WHAT WE CALL IMPRINTED BECAUSE
PEOPLE HAD HIM FOR SO LONG HE'S
USED TO PEOPLE BUT ALL THE BIRDS
INSIDE THE HOSPITAL - IT'S VERY
IMPORTANT THAT WE KEEP THEM
AS WILD AS POSSIBLE.
SO, AS MUCH AS WE REALLY LOVE TO
LOOK AT THEM AND WOULD WANT TO
TOUCH THEM OR CUDDLE THEM, WE
REALLY CAN'T BECAUSE WE WANT
THEM TO RETURN TO THE WILD
AS WILD AS THEY CAME HERE.
Eric narrates, AND WE HAD A SPECIAL SURPRISE.
HANNABELLE GOT TO RELEASE A
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER BACK
INTO THE WILD.
Hannabelle smiles. She carries a covered container into a field full of tall grass. A yellow arrow points at an opening in the container. Red text reads, “Yello-bellied sapsucker.”
Eric says, HERE YOU GO LITTLE BUDDY.
HAVE A NICE MIGRATION.
IT'S OKAY. COME ON.
WE NEED SOME WORDS OF
ENCOURAGEMENT HANNABELLE.
Hannabelle says, COME ON, YOU
CAN GET OUT NOW.
[Flapping]
Hannabelle and Eric say, OH!
AND HE'S GONE AND HE'S ON
THAT BRANCH OVER THERE.
Patty says, HE'S JUST UP THERE.
HE'S PROBABLY GONNA LOOK AROUND.
"OH MY GOODNESS. I'M BACK IN
THE WILD".
Eric says, “I'M FREE, I CAN FLY.”
BYE BIRDIE.
[Flapping, upbeat music continues]
Hannabelle says, BYE.
I HOPE THE BIRD FINDS A MATE
AND FINDS A PLACE WHERE TO STAY.
Eric says, ALL RIGHT, LET'S GO.
LET'S GET INSIDE. IT'S STARTING
TO POUR.
Hannabelle says, OKAY.
[Patty and Eric laugh]
Back inside, Patty, Hannabelle, and Eric wear masks and gloves. Hannabelle and Eric wear white laboratory coats over their street clothes.
Patty says, ALL RIGHT, HANNABELLE,
I HAVE ONE LAST ROOM TO SHOW
YOU BUT THIS ROOM HAS A FEW
MORE RULES.
SO, THIS ROOM IS OUR RAPTOR ROOM.
IT HAS ALL OF OUR HAWKS
AND EAGLES AND THINGS
LIKE THAT AND SO IF YOU THINK
ABOUT IT -IN THE WILD THESE BIRDS
ARE FAR AWAY FROM PEOPLE - SO
IT'S VERY IMPORTANT FOR US TO
KEEP OUR VOICES VERY LOW OR
SILENT COMPLETELY.
SO, THE FIRST BIRD WE'RE GONNA
LOOK AT IS A PEREGRINE FALCON.
[Upbeat music plays]
Eric says, NO WAY. ARE YOU SERIOUS?
Patty says, I'M SERIOUS, YEAH.
THE FASTEST ANIMAL IN THE WORLD
IS IN OUR BUILDING AND YOU GET
TO SEE IT TODAY.
[Falcon calls]
Eric narrates, WOW!
THE FASTEST ANIMAL IN
THE WORLD, HANNABELLE.
Patty says, SO THE PEREGRINE FALCON
WAS ONE OF THE MOST ENDANGERED
BIRDS. AT ONE POINT IN TIME WE THOUGHT
THEY WERE COMPLETELY GONE FROM
ONTARIO AND IT WAS BECAUSE A
PESTICIDE - A CHEMICAL WE WERE
USING TO KILL BUGS.
SO WE'VE BANNED THIS CHEMICAL
AND THEY'RE NO LONGER ENDANGERED.
OKAY, LET'S GO.
Eric says, MY HEART'S ACTUALLY
POUNDING. SHHHH.
Red text reads, “SHHHHHH.”
Eric shuts a door.
[Click]
The falcon flies up on to a branch. A yellow arrow points to it. Red text reads, “Peregrine Falcon.”
[Flapping]
Eric whispers, LOOK AT THAT, SO COOL!
A subtitle reads, “Look at that, so cool!”
Eric makes a heart sign with his fingers.
[Rustling]
Patty, Hannabelle, and Eric stand outside of the raptor room.
Hannabelle asks, ARE BIRDS IN DANGER?
DO WE NEED TO PROTECT THEM?
Patty replies, ABSOLUTELY.
THEY'RE LOSING THEIR HABITAT.
SO, WE'RE LOSING A LOT
OF BIRDS EVERY YEAR.
SO, IT'S SO IMPORTANT TO
PROTECT ALL OF OUR SPECIES.
WE CAN, TOGETHER,
MAKE A REALLY BIG
DIFFERENCE AND I'M PRETTY
SURE THAT YOU ARE
GOING TO BE A PART
OF THAT MOVEMENT.
Eric puts a bag with plants inside of it on a table in Hannabelle’s backyard.
[Upbeat music plays]
Eric narrates, PATTY GAVE US A
FEW "DO IT AT HOME" IDEAS FOR
HELPING THE BIRDS.
He says, ALL RIGHT, LET'S GO.
I'M GONNA GIVE
YOU YOUR OWN PLANT.
Eric and Hannabelle plant the plants in soil.
Eric narrates, THIS ONE MIGHT ATTRACT
BIRDS TO HANNABELLE'S BACKYARD.
WE'RE STARTING HER VERY OWN
BERRY PATCH.
Hannabelle says, OKAY.
Eric says, VERY GOOD.
THAT'S IT AND LET'S
GET SOME SOIL IN THERE.
Hannabelle asks, DO YOU THINK THE
BIRDS WILL LIKE THE RASPBERRIES?
Eric says, I THINK THEY'RE GONNA
LOVE THE RASPBERRIES. I THINK
THEY'RE GONNA LOVE THIS AREA.
IT'S KINDA SHELTERED WITH THE FENCE.
THEY'RE GONNA COME, IMAGINE
THEY'RE GONNA FLY HERE, DOOT
DOOT DOOT DOOT DOOT. MUNCH
ON SOME RASPBERRIES AND THEN
TAKE OFF.
[Flapping]
Eric narrates, NEXT WE PROTECT BIRDS
FROM CRASHING INTO WINDOWS.
Lisa, Eric, and Hannabelle stand by a window in Hannabelle’s house.
Eric says, SO, WE FOUND THE BIGGEST
WINDOW IN YOUR HOUSE AND WE'RE
GONNA DRAW SOME DESIGNS.
I BROUGHT SQUAD MEMBER
LISA TO HELP US OUT.
Lisa says, YEP, I'M AN ARTISTE.
SO, I'LL BE ABLE TO REALLY HELP.
Text reads, “Ask a grown-up before doing this at home!”
[Popping, upbeat music plays]
Eric says, ALL RIGHT, POUR YOUR
HEART AND SOUL OUT.
YOU'RE A TRUE ARTIST.
I'M GONNA DRAW
LIKE A CLOUD HERE.
Lisa says, LET OUT ALL OF YOUR
CREATIVE PASSIONS.
Hannabelle and Eric draw on the window.
[Upbeat music continues]
Eric narrates, WINDOW COLLISIONS
ARE A BIG PROBLEM AND A MAJOR CAUSE
OF BIRDS GETTING HURT OR KILLED.
He says, AND THAT'S BECAUSE THEY SEE
THEIR REFLECTION OR THEY SEE
REFLECTION OF TREES OR THEY DON'T
EVEN SEE THE GLASS.
SO, THE FACT THAT WE'RE PUTTING
DESIGNS LET'S THEM KNOW THAT:
"HEY, THERE'S A WINDOW HERE."
Eric says, SO, WE'VE TALKED A LOT
ABOUT BIRDS TODAY BUT I KNOW YOU
LOVE ALL ANIMALS, RIGHT?
Hannabelle says, ABSOLUTELY.
Eric says, I THINK YOU BETTER GO
SEE KYLE BECAUSE HE'S GOT A
REALLY COOL PROJECT.
I THINK YOU'RE GONNA LOVE IT.
[Upbeat music plays]
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Animated music notes and the words “La la la” rise from a red and green parrot’s mouth.
Eric narrates, BIRDS ARE SO AWESOME
BUT THEY DO SO MUCH MORE THAN
JUST SING AND LOOK PRETTY.
THEY MOVE SEEDS AROUND WHICH
KEEPS FORESTS HEALTHY AND THEY
FLY LONG DISTANCES SO THEY CAN
EVEN START NEW PLANTS IN PLACES
WHERE THEY'VE BEEN DESTROYED.
AND THEY EAT TONNES OF BUGS
AND I MEAN THAT LITERALLY.
FIVE HUNDRED MILLION TONNES
EVERY YEAR TO BE EXACT.
[Buzzing]
Eric narrates, WHEN THERE ARE TOO
MANY BUGS, THEY CAN DESTROY TREES
AND CROPS SO IT'S AN IMPORTANT JOB.
THANKS MS. BIRD.
YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE
MAKES BIRDS SPECIAL?
THEIR POOP. IT'S FULL OF
SEEDS AND NUTRIENTS.
PLANTS LOVE IT BECAUSE IT HELPS
THEM GROW STRONG AND HEALTHY.
IT'S SO VALUABLE SPAIN STARTED
A WAR OVER AN ISLAND COVERED
IN BIRD POOP.
Text reads, “North Chincha Island, Peru.”
[Plopping, squawking]
Eric narrates, BIRDS ARE THE BEST.
[Upbeat music plays]
Green text reads, “Green.” Pink text beneath it reads, “Squad.”
The electronic voice says, GREEN SQUAD.
Kyle and Hannabelle walk on a beach. Animated fish swim over them. Boats are moored at piers further along the shore.
Kyle says, THERE'S ALL KINDS OF
FISH HERE. TROUT, PERCH, WALLEYE,
MUSKY, EVEN LAKE STURGEON.
THOSE ARE TALLER THAN ME AND CAN
LIVE FOR MORE THAN A HUNDRED YEARS.
Kyle and Hannabelle sit on a log on the beach. Hannabelle points to scraps of plastic half-buried in the wet sand.
Hannabelle says, LOOK AT THAT PLASTIC.
THAT CAN'T BE GOOD FOR THE FISH.
Kyle says, IT'S DEFINITELY NOT GOOD
FOR THE FISH BUT I KNOW SOMEONE
WHO'S TRYING TO HELP.
[Upbeat music plays]
A woman with long straight black hair waves. She wears a grey t-shirt with a blue turtle outlined in white. Text over the turtle reads, “Deep Blue Cleanup.”
The woman says, HEY GUYS.
WELCOME TO THE
NEPEAN SAILING CLUB.
A purple arrow points to Melanie. Light orange text reads, “Melanie.” Red text beneath that reads, “Teacher and Founder of Deep Blue Cleanup.”
Kyle says, HEY THERE.
SO, HANNABELLE, THIS IS MELANIE.
SHE IS WITH DEEP-BLUE CLEAN-UP
AND SHE HELPS TO KEEP OUR
RIVERS CLEAN.
Hannabelle says, WHAT HAPPENS
WHEN THE PLASTICS GETS INTO
THE RIVERS?
[Upbeat music plays]
Melanie explains, WHAT HAPPENS IS
THAT WITH THE SUN AND WITH
THE CURRENTS AND WITH THE
WAVES THE PLASTIC STARTS TO
BREAKDOWN INTO SMALLER
PLASTICS CALLED MICRO-PLASTICS.
IT'S NOT VERY GOOD FOR OUR
WILDLIFE BECAUSE THEY END UP
EATING THESE TINY PIECES OF PLASTIC.
THEY CAN GET SICK AND SOMETIMES
THEY CAN DIE BECAUSE THEY HAVE
A STOMACH FULL OF PLASTIC.
Purple text over a pail full of small pieces of plastic reads, “Plastics filtered from water.”
[Popping]
Kyle says, AND THEY CAN END
UP ANYWHERE.
LIKE THE BIGGER FISH EAT THE
SMALLER FISH AND THE BIRDS EAT
THE FISH AND THEN SUDDENLY
IT'S ALL OVER THE PLACE.
Melanie says, EXACTLY.
IT MAKES ITS WAY
INTO OUR FOOD CHAIN.
Hannabelle asks, WHAT CAN WE DO
ABOUT THE POLLUTION IN THE RIVERS?
Melanie says, WELL, I HAVE SOMETHING
I'D LIKE TO SHOW YOU THAT CAN HELP
WITH THAT.
Melanie points to a device almost entirely submerged beside a dock. Purple and green text reads, “Seabin.”
[Water sloshes]
She says, SO, THIS IS THE SEABIN.
IT IS AMAZING.
IT'S CALLED A TRASH TRAPPING
DEVICE BECAUSE IT PICKS UP TRASH
WITHIN A TEN KILOMETRE RADIUS.
Kyle says, WOW.
Melanie says, IT'S GOT A BIG CATCH TODAY.
THERE'S QUITE A BIT IN HERE.
Melanie dumps the contents of the seabin on a table.
Kyle says, WOW. THAT'S A LOT.
WITH THIS PLASTIC THAT'S IN
THERE I HEAR THAT IT STICKS
AROUND FOR A REALLY LONG TIME.
[Clumping]
Melanie says, OH YEAH.
MICRO-PLASTICS - THEY DON'T
GO AWAY.
Hannabelle says, I THINK THAT'S
PRETTY COOL BUT IT ALSO
LOOKS GROSS.
Melanie asks, DO YOU SEE
THIS, HANNABELLE?
Hannabelle says, YES.
Melanie says, IT IS A PIECE
OF STYROFOAM.
DO YOU SEE HOW TINY STYROFOAM
CAN GET WHEN IT BREAKS DOWN?
SO, THAT IS JUST GOING TO BE
FLOATING AROUND IN THE OCEAN
IF WE DON'T GET IT OUT.
Kyle says, OH. YUCKY.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle says, WE SEE A LOT OF STUFF
THAT WASHES UP ON, YOU KNOW,
OUR BEACHES AND SHORES.
SO, HOW DO WE CLEAN THAT UP?
Melanie says, WELL, WE DO A SHORELINE
CLEAN-UP AND WE ACTUALLY HAVE ONE
HAPPENING RIGHT NOW. LET'S GO.
Melanie leads Hannabelle and Kyle to a group of people. Many of them hold large white buckets. Lisa looks up from a bucket. Text reads, “Hi.” “Hey hi.”
[Popping]
Lisa says, HEY IT'S SO GREAT TO SEE YOU!
[Background chatter, upbeat music continues]
Later, Hannabelle picks a box up from a beach.
Kyle says, IT'S GOOD TO KNOW THAT
WE'RE SAVING ANIMALS ON LAND
NOW AND IN THE SEA.
Hannabelle says, YEAH, THAT'S TRUE.
Kyle says, HOW MUCH HAVE WE
PICKED UP SO FAR?
WE FOUND THESE BUT WE MOSTLY
FOUND PAPER AND SOME PLASTIC.
Kyle says, SO, IT LOOKS LIKE WE GOT
A LOT OF DIFFERENT STUFF IN HERE
WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO PROBABLY
SORT THAT OUT, RIGHT?
Hannabelle says, YEAH.
Soon, they stand at a table sorting the items from their bucket.
A child says, PAPER, PAPER!
Kyle narrates, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE
THAT EVERYTHING THAT CAN BE
RECYCLED OR REPURPOSED GETS
SENT TO THE PROPER FACILITY.
[Background chatter, upbeat music continues]
Lisa says, I DON'T KNOW WHAT
THIS IS. IT'S METAL. KIND OF LOOKS
LIKE A BOBBY PIN.
Melanie says, A GIANT.
A REALLY GIANT...
Lisa agrees, YEAH.
FOR A LOT OF HAIR, FOR SURE.
DO YOU WANT TO PUT IT WITH
THE METALS?
Hannabelle says, OKAY.
[Kyle laughs]
Kyle asks, WHERE ARE
THESE GONNA GO?
Eric says, THEY'RE GONNA GO HERE.
Kyle says, NOBODY'S GONNA WEAR THOSE NOW.
Eric says, I'LL WEAR THESE SOCKS.
[Upbeat music plays]
Hannabelle sits in her living room.
She says, THE BEACH CLEANUP WAS
FUN AND ALSO HELPFUL FOR THE EARTH.
ONE OF THE PARTS THAT I DID LIKE
WAS THE LITTLE BABY TURTLE THAT
CAME BY TO SAY HI.
I THINK IT WAS PROBABLY HAPPY TO
SEE THAT PEOPLE WERE TRYING TO
MAKE A CAUSE TO HELP TO
CLEAN UP THE BEACHES.
Melanie says, HANNABELLE, I JUST
WANTED TO TAKE A MINUTE TO
GIVE YOU SOMETHING.
IT IS A T-SHIRT.
YOU ARE NOW A DEEP
BLUE HERO AMBASSADOR.
Eric says, IT'S GONNA LOOK GREAT.
Melanie says, IT LOOK S SO GOOD.
Lisa asks, SO, HOW'S THE
SHORELINE LOOKING?
DID WE DO A GOOD JOB?
Red text reads, “Amazing.”
Melanie says, THESE KIDS DID
AN AMAZING JOB TODAY.
WE'RE SO HAPPY.
Lisa says, SO, I KNOW YOU LOVE
ANIMALS BUT YOU DON'T HAVE
ANY PETS AT HOME, RIGHT?
Hannabelle says, YEAH, I DON'T.
WELL, I GOT A CREEPY
CRAWLY MAJOR SURPRISE
FOR YOU BACK AT
THE HOUSE THAT I THINK
YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE.
Hannabelle smiles and says, OH REALLY?
Lisa says, YEAH.
[Upbeat music plays]
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
[Upbeat music continues]
Kyle narrates, THERE'S SO MUCH PLASTIC
IN THE OCEAN THAT IT CAN MAKE A
CHAIN THAT REACHES ALL THE
WAY TO THE MOON AND BACK.
COOL SOLUTIONS LIKE THE SEA BIN
ARE HELPING BUT WE CAN ALSO
TURN OFF THE TAP AND REDUCE THE
PLASTIC THAT WE USE BUT HAVE
YOU EVER HEAR OF NUDE FOOD?
Animated plastic items drip from an animated faucet.
[Squeaking]
He continues, IT'S FOOD THAT DOESN'T
USE ANY KIND OF PLASTIC WRAP.
THERE ARE NUDE FOOD STORES
POPPING UP ALL AROUND THE WORLD
- WHERE PEOPLE BRING THEIR OWN
BAGS AND CONTAINERS AND FILL
THEM UP.
THERE ARE EVEN SOME SCHOOLS
THAT ARE DOING NUDE FOOD DAY
TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO BRING
ZERO WASTE LUNCHES.
SO DON'T BE RUDE OR PRUDE.
MAKE YOUR FOOD NUDE DUDE.
[Upbeat music plays]
Green text reads, “Green.” Pink text beneath it reads, “Squad.”
The electronic voice says, GREEN SQUAD.
Lisa and Hannabelle sit on a red mat in Hannabelle’s living room.”
Lisa says, THESE AREN'T YOUR TYPICAL
PETS, THEY'RE SOMETHING A LITTLE
BIT DIFFERENT BUT LET ME INTRODUCE
YOU TO THE RED WIGGLERS.
Lisa holds out a small bucket of dirt with wiggling worms.
Hannabelle says, WOW!
Lisa says, YEAH.
YOU SEE THOSE?
WHAT IS THAT IN THERE?
Hannabelle says, WORMS?
Lisa says, YEAH, LOTS AND LOTS OF WORMS.
THEY'RE KIND OF CUTE, AREN'T THEY?
Hannabelle says, YEAH.
[Lisa laughs]
Lisa says, SO, WHAT WE'RE GONNA
DO IS WE HAVE THIS WORM
COMPOSTING KIT FROM A
LOCAL COMPANY AND YOU
ARE GONNA BECOME THE PROUD
OWNER OF YOUR VERY OWN WORM
COMPOSTING KIT.
[Upbeat music plays]
Lisa explains, SO, WORMS PLAY A
REALLY IMPORTANT PART IN
ECO-SYSTEMS BECAUSE THEY TURN
ORGANIC MATTER IN SOIL
INTO COMPOST.
YOU COULD PUT YOUR OWN FOOD
SCRAPS IN THERE AND THEY'LL GET
RECYCLED INTO COMPOST.
SO, LET'S TAKE EVERYTHING OUT.
Lisa unpacks a box. She uses a drill to attach wooden pieces of the compost box.
[Whirring]
Lisa asks, HOW ARE YOU DOING?
Hannabelle says, GOOD.
Lisa says, I THINK THAT LOOKS GREAT.
Hannabelle says, YEP.
[Rustling]
Lisa says, TURN IT AROUND AND
DO THE OTHER HALF ON THE
OTHER SIDE.
[Whirring drill]
Lisa says, THE NEXT STEP IS TO ADD
THE MESH ON THE BOTTOM.
[Whirring drill]
Lisa says, THERE YOU GO, NOW PRESS.
SO, NOW THAT WE FINISHED
BUILDING THE BASE WE CAN GIVE
THE WORMS NICE COMFY ORGANIC
BEDDING FOR THE WORM CITY TO
LIVE ON.
Lisa tears the cardboard box that the compost box arrived in.
[Tearing, upbeat music continues]
Lisa says, SEE HOW WE CAN USE THIS
CARDBOARD BOX OR WE CAN USE
SHREDDED PAPERS OR OLD
NEWSPAPER. YOU JUST GOTTA RIP
'EM UP PRETTY TINY.
SO NOW, WE ADD THE WORMS.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO
DO THE HONOURS?
Hannabelle says, OKAY.
Lisa says, OH, OKAY, THERE WE GO.
SO NOW, WE'RE GONNA WANT
TO SPRAY TO MAKE A MOIST
ENVIRONMENT FOR THE WORMS.
YOU CAN GO AHEAD.
Hannabelle says, OKAY.
[Water bottle sprays, upbeat music plays]
Lisa says, WORMS PLAY A REALLY IMPORTANT
ROLE IN COMPOSTING BECAUSE THEY
ADD A LOT OF GOOD NUTRIENTS
TO THE SOIL LIKE MAGNESIUM AND
CALCIUM AND NITROGEN AND THEY
CAN ALSO REMOVE SOME OF THE
TOXINS THAT ARE IN THE FOOD SCRAPS.
Hannabelle says, ONE OF THEM
IS TRYING TO ESCAPE HERE.
Lisa says, OH, I THINK HE'S HUNGRY
SO, WE CAN FEED THEM
THEIR FIRST MEAL.
SO, WE CAN GIVE THESE
WORMS OUR FOOD SCRAPS.
SO, THINGS LIKE FRUIT AND
VEGETABLE RINDS AND WASTE,
COFFEE GRINDS, TEA BAGS,
EGGSHELLS, BUT WE CAN'T GIVE
THEM MEAT, DAIRY, GRAINS BECAUSE
IT WOULD GET SMELLY AND
ATTRACT FLIES.
AS THE WORMS START TO EAT THE
FOOD SCRAPS AND TURN THEM INTO
COMPOST WHAT YOU DO IS YOU GRAB
THE NEXT LAYER AND YOU PUT IT ON
TOP AND THEN DO THE SAME THING
THAT WE DID. PUT THE BEDDING IN,
THEN THE FOOD SCRAPS.
SAME THING FOR THE NEXT LAYER
AND THEN EVENTUALLY THE LID.
[Slide whistles]
Lisa says, AS THE WORMS TURN THOSE
FOOD SCRAPS INTO COMPOST THEY'RE
GONNA WANT TO MOVE UP EACH LAYER
TO GET TO THE NEXT LEVEL OF FOOD.
SO, IT'S A WIN WIN WIN BECAUSE
YOU GET PETS, THE WORMS GET FOOD
AND YOU GET GREAT COMPOST FOR
YOUR GARDEN.
[Upbeat music plays]
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
[Upbeat music continues]
Lisa narrates, THERE ARE A FEW
WAYS TO COMPOST AND THEY'RE
ALL GREAT FOR REDUCING FOOD WASTE.
SO, WHY USE WORMS ASIDE FROM
THE FACT THAT THEY'RE CUTE?
WORM COMPOSTING, WHICH IS ALSO
CALLED VERMICOMPOSTING, DOESN'T
NEED A LOT OF SPACE. IT'S EASY.
Red and dark orange text reads, “Vermicomposting.”
[Popping, upbeat music continues]
She continues, YOU HAVE TO TAKE CARE
OF THEM BUT THE WORMS DO MOST OF
THE WORK. THEY'RE FAST TOO.
An animated worm eats waste. Text reads, “Burp.”
[Boinging, burp]
She narrates, RED WIGGLERS EAT UP TO
HALF THEIR WEIGHT EVERYDAY AND
THE BEST THING ABOUT WORMS IS...
[Flatulence releases]
Eric asks, THEIR POOP?
[Parrot squawks]
Lisa says, EXACTLY.
IT'S THE WHOLE POINT
OF VERMICOMPOSTING.
THEY EAT YOUR FOOD SCRAPS AND
THE BACTERIA IN THEIR GUTS TURNS
THEM INTO SOME OF THE BEST
FERTILIZER IN THE WORLD.
LIKE A FIVE STAR MEAL FOR PLANTS.
SO THEY'RE LIKE REALLY
CUTE LITTLE MAGICIANS.
[Chiming, popping]
[Upbeat music plays]
Green text reads, “Green.” Pink text beneath it reads, “Squad.”
The electronic voice says, GREEN SQUAD.
Eric enters the living room. He looks down at the compost box.
[Upbeat music continues]
Eric says, WOW GUYS, THIS IS AMAZING.
Hannabelle says, SO, BASICALLY IT'S
WHERE WORMS CREATE COMPOST
SO YOU CAN USE IT FOR A GARDEN
OR ANYTHING THAT HAS PLANTS IN IT.
Eric says, I LOVE HOW YOU'RE ALREADY
MAKING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE
COMPOST AND THE RASPBERRY BUSHES
OUTSIDE BECAUSE AS SOON AS IT'S
READY TRANSFER IT OUTSIDE AND
THEN THE COMPOST WILL FEED THE
RASPBERRY BUSHES AND THEN
THE BIRDS WILL EAT THOSE
RASPBERRIES, THEREFORE, IT'S
KIND OF LIKE YOUR KITCHEN SCRAPS
ARE FEEDING THE BIRDS.
ISN'T THAT GENIUS?
[Upbeat music plays]
Hannabelle says, YEAH.
Eric says, IT'S BEEN A REAL
BLAST TO GET TO KNOW YOU.
WE'VE HAD SO MUCH FUN AND
HOPEFULLY YOU CARRY ON SOME OF
THESE THINGS THAT YOU'VE LEARNED
TO DAY AND APPLY THEM IN YOUR
OWN LIFE.
Lisa says, YEAH.
WE'LL BE CHECKING IN,
IN A FEW WEEKS TO SEE
HOW YOU'RE DOING.
Hannabelle says, WELL, I'D LIKE
TO SAY THANK YOU FOR COMING.
I'VE HAD A REALLY GREAT
TIME WITH YOU GUYS TOO.
Lisa says, LET'S JUST SEE IF THE
WORMS ARE HAPPY IN THEIR
LITTLE BOX.
BYE GUYS. HAPPY COMPOSTING.
Eric and Lisa drum on the top of the compost box.
[Thumping]
[Upbeat music plays]
Orange and blue text reads, “Squad Tip.”
Kyle stands behind a table with fruits and vegetables on it.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle says, GROWING UP, I USED TO GO
TO THE SUPERMARKET A LOT WITH MY
GRANDPARENTS AND WE PICKED ALL
KINDS OF FRUITS AND VEGGIES BUT
THE WEIRDEST THAT MY GRANDMA
USED TO ASK ME IS TO FIND THE
UGLIEST FRUITS AND VEGGIES ON
THE SHELF.
SHE'D SAY STUFF LIKE
"DON'T YOU FEEL BAD FOR IT?"
IT'S LIKE NEVER GONNA FIND OUT.
SO, I'D GO, I'D PICK MY UGLY FRUITS
AND VEGGIES AND THAT WOULD BE
THE INGREDIENTS FOR OUR DINNER.
SO, NOW THAT I'M OLDER I STILL
FEEL BAD FOR THE "NOT SO PRETTY
CARROT" BUT I ALSO PICK THEM
FOR A DIFFERENT REASON.
YOU SEE, MY GRANDMA WAS RIGHT.
A LOT OF THE TIME THESE ODD
LOOKING FRUITS ACTUALLY GET
THROWN OUT AND IT'S A HUGE WASTE
OF FOOD AND THERE'S ALL KINDS OF
RECIPES YOU COULD USE THESE IN.
YOU CAN USE THESE IN SMOOTHIES,
BANANA BREADS, SOUPS...
OKAY, I GOTTA STOP.
I'M MAKING MYSELF HUNGRY.
SO, IF YOU PICK THE LESS THAN
PERFECT FRUIT, THEY'RE OFTEN
CHEAPER AND THEY TASTE JUST
AS GOOD AS ANYTHING ELSE ON
THE SHELF.
SO, DON'T BE AFRAID OF
UGLY FRUITS AND VEGETABLES.
EVEN THE WEIRD ONES
DESERVE SOME LOVE.
Kyle holds up a carrot with a bent tip.
Kyle says, GIVE THIS CARROT A NICE HOME.
He bits the carrot.
[Crunching]
[Upbeat music plays]
Green and blue text reads, “Check-in.”
Lisa, Shakira, Kyle, Sigfried, and Eric sit on a couch. A tablet is propped up on a wooden table in front of them.
[Upbeat music continues]
Eric says, WE'RE SUPER PUMPED
TO SEE WHAT HANNABELLE'S BEEN
UP TO.
Hannabelle appears on the tablet.
Hannabelle says, HI SQUAD.
THIS IS FINISHED FOR NOW.
I STILL NEED TO PUT SOME
IMPROVEMENT THOUGH BUT I THINK
THE BIRDS WILL IGNORE THIS
WINDOW AND NOT JUST GO FLYING
INTO IT.
THEY'LL SEE THESE
LINES AND KNOW "OH,
WE CAN'T GO HERE.
IT'S NOT A CLEAR SPACE".
Eric says, I LOVE TO SEE THAT SHE'S KEEPING
THE WINDOW UPDATED WITH ALL OF
HER NEW DESIGNS AND SHE'S
USING DIFFERENT COLOURS LIKE THE
COLOUR BLUE WHICH IS REALLY FUN.
Shakira says, YEAH AND DEPENDING
ON THE SEASON SHE CAN CHANGE IT
UP LIKE IF IT'S HALLOWEEN SHE CAN
USE BATS OR WINTER - SNOWFLAKES.
Hannabelle says, I TOOK CARE OF THE
RASPBERRY BUSH BY WATERING IT.
[Eric gasps]
Hannabelle says, I EXPECT THERE TO BE
THIS START OF LIKE BERRIES STARTING
TO GROW. EVENTUALLY BIRDS
WILL START COMING.
Eric says, IT'S GONNA TAKE ABOUT
A YEAR FOR THOSE RASPBERRIES
TO COME IN. NO WORRIES.
GARDENING'S A TOUGH THING
AND YOU'RE DOING A GREAT JOB.
Hannabelle says, I LIKED WHEN
I WAS FEEDING INDIGO.
I ALSO LIKED THE MORE LIKE
PREDATORY BIRDS - THE MORE
SILENT ONES.
Eric says, I MEAN THAT WAS SO COOL.
WE GOT TO VISIT MY FAVOURITE
BIRD OF ALL TIME - THE PEREGRINE
FALCON. IT WAS SUCH A COOL EXPERIENCE
TO HAVE WITH HANNABELLE.
Hannabelle says, I THINK VOLUNTEERING
AT THE BIRD CENTRE WOULD BE A REALLY
GREAT EXPERIENCE AND IT WOULD HELP
EXPERIENCING HOW IT WOULD BE TO
BECOME A VET BECAUSE PART OF
IT TAKING CARE OF ANIMALS AND
KNOWING HOW TO MAINTAIN
THEM AND MANAGE THEM.
Lisa says, IT REALLY ALIGNS WITH
HER INTERESTS OF BECOMING A VET.
IT'S SO NICE TO SEE HER HAVE SUCH A
LOVE AND CARE FOR ANIMALS ALREADY.
Sigfried says, IT'S FANTASTIC TO SEE
THAT SHE'S NOT ONLY CONNECTING
WITH THE ANIMALS BUT SHE'S ALSO
MAKING CONNECTIONS WITH HER
COMMUNITY AS WELL.
Hannabelle says, TODAY WE'RE GOING
TO BE CHECKING UP ON THE WORMS.
I HAVE CUCUMBERS HERE AND I ALSO
HAVE MY SPRAY BOTTLE SO I CAN
SPRAY IT ON HERE WHEN I'M FINISHED.
AND I'M NOW GONNA PLOP
THESE CUCUMBERS IN HERE. THERE.
THE WORMS ARE REALLY HAPPY BUT
I SHOULDN'T EXCITE THEM THAT MUCH
BECAUSE I GUESS SOME OF THEM
ARE TRYING TO SLEEP RIGHT NOW.
[Clunking, water sprays]
Lisa says, HANNABELLE'S DOING
AN AMAZING JOB KEEPING UP WITH
HER PETS - THE WORMS-AND IT'S
GREAT THAT THEY'RE PRODUCING
SOME GREAT COMPOST FOR HER AND
THAT, AS WELL, SHE'S KEEPING UP
WITH PUTTING HER FOOD SCRAPS
IN THERE. IT LOOKS REALLY GREAT.
IT WAS REALLY FUN AND I
REALLY LIKED ALL THE MISSIONS.
THEY TAUGHT ME A LOT.
Eric says, SHE'S GONNA BE A
FANTASTIC VETERINARIAN WHEN
SHE GROWS OLDER.
Sharkira says, SHE ALREADY HAS SO
MUCH EXPERIENCE RIGHT?
Sigfried says, YEAH.
Lisa says, HANNABELLE REALLY IS
SUCH A CURIOUS PERSON AND, I MEAN,
EVEN THAT BOOK THAT SHE'S WRITING
ABOUT THE RAINFOREST, SHE REALLY
LOVES TO GET TO KNOW THINGS
ABOUT ANIMALS.
Shakira says, IT SHOWS HOW MUCH SHE
CARES BECAUSE SHE'S ALREADY DOING
SO MUCH AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE.
Lisa says, HANNABELLE IS A BIG
WIN FOR THE WILDLIFE.
The Green Squad cheers, GO HANNABELLE!
End credits roll.
[Upbeat music plays]
A child says, WHEE!
Colourful text reads, “tvo kids.”
[Child giggles]
A blue eye peers out of the Apartment Eleven Productions logo. Text beneath it reads, “Apartment Eleven Productions.”
[Squeaking]
Colourful text reads, “tvo kids” plus “Apartment Eleven Productions,” “Original.” A purple circle with a ring attached to each side appears over “Apartment Eleven.”
[Child giggles]
Kyle, Lisa, and Eric sit on a park bench facing a large body of water. Lisa peers through binoculars.
[Water sloshes, upbeat music plays]
Lisa says, IT'S SO AWESOME THESE
SPECIES HAVE BEEN TAKEN OFF THE
ENDANGERED SPECIES LIST.
HUMPBACK WHALES.
SOUTHERN WHITE RHINOS.
Kyle says, CONSERVATION EFFORTS
CAN DEFINITELY WORK.
BALD EAGLES.
GIANT PANDAS.
Eric looks through the binoculars and sees a plastic bag stuck in a tree.
[Dramatic music plays]
He says, FLOOPY FLOPPY BAG CREATURES?
Lisa and Kyle say, WHAT?
[Upbeat music plays]
Eric says, NOW, THAT IS DEFINITELY A
SPECIES THAT NEEDS TO GO EXTINCT.
Lisa asks, READY TO HELP
HANNABELLE MAKE IT HAPPEN?
Eric says, ABSOLUTELY.
Kyle says, SURE.
[Upbeat music plays]
The Green Squad smiles. Yellow and red text reads, “Eric.” To the right of the text, Eric holds a reusable shopping bag and smiles. His chin-length black hair is straight and he wears a black t-shirt and brown overalls.
Red and orange text reads, “Lisa.” To the left of the text, Lisa wears her brown hair in small braids. She wears a dark red blouse with white flecks with light blue jeans.
Purple and blue text reads, “Sigfried.” To the right of the text, Sigfried wears a black beret over his pale curly blond hair. He wears a red long-sleeve shirt.
Green and blue text reads, “Shakira.” To the left of the text, a girl with long black hair turns. She wears a black sweater and ripped blue jeans. A pink floral scarf is knotted around her neck.
Dark and light blue text reads, “Kyle.” To the right of the text, Kyle wears a red backpack. His dark brown hair reaches beneath his ears.
White text reads, “TVOKIDS presents.” Below that, green text with dark green dots reads, “Green.” Below that, pink text reads, “Squad.” The Green Squad poses beneath the text.
Electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
Hannabelle sits on a grey couch. Her long, curly black hair reaches her chin. She wears pink-framed glasses, a blue shirt with a white shirt over top. Pink text beneath her reads, “Hannabelle.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Hannabelle says, HI.
I'M HANNABELLE AND
I'M TEN YEARS OLD.
Hannabelle plays soccer with a young girl. The girl wears her black hair in a ponytail gathered at the top of her head. A thin young man with short black hair watches them chase the ball.
[Screech]
Hannabelle says, I LIVE WITH MY
MOM, MY DAD AND MY TWO
BROTHERS AND MY LITTLE SISTER.
WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE A
VETERINARIAN BECAUSE I LOVE
ANIMALS AND I WANT TO
PROTECT THEM AND HELP THEM.
THE BOOK I'M WRITING IS CALLED
LOST IN PARADISE AND IT'S ABOUT
THIS GIRL THAT GETS LOST,
BASICALLY, IN THE RAINFOREST AND
SHE MEETS DIFFERENT ANIMALS.
SOME DANGEROUS. SOME NOT
SO DANGEROUS.
I REALLY WANT TO HELP ANIMALS
AND I REALLY WANT TO STOP
PLASTIC POLLUTION.
IF YOU WERE TO THROW LITTER OR
PLASTIC ON THE GROUND IT WOULD
BREAK DOWN AND ANIMALS WOULD
PROBABLY THINK THAT IT WAS
PROBABLY SOME FOOD AND IF THEY
WOULD SWALLOW IT, IT WOULD
EFFECT THEIR HEALTH.
I REALLY WANT TO GET INVOLVED
IN LOCAL WILDLIFE PROJECTS.
Text beside Hannabelle reads, “Help me out!”
Hannabelle says, HEY SQUAD!
HELP ME OUT!
Kyle, Lisa, and Eric walk down a street.
[Upbeat music plays]
Lisa says, YOU KNOW, I'M SO IMPRESSED
THAT HANNABELLE ALREADY KNOWS
WHAT SHE WANT TO BE WHEN SHE
GROWS UP.
Kyle says, YEP, SHE'S GOT IT
ALL FIGURED OUT.
Eric rings a doorbell and Hannabelle opens a door.
[Doorbell rings, door creaks]
Hannabelle says, HI.
Eric, Lisa, and Kyle say, HI.
Text reads, “Hi.” “Hey Hi!”
[Popping]
Hannabelle says, COME ON IN.
Lisa says, THANK YOU.
Kyle says, THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Hannabelle says, SO, THIS IS MY FAMILY.
Everyone says, HI!
Kyle says, NICE TO MEET YOU.
Hannabelle’s mother says, NICE TO MEET YOU TOO.
A red arrow points to Hannabelle’s mother. Purple text reads, “Mom.” A yellow arrow points to Hannabelle’s father. Green text reads, “Dad.”
Hannabelle says, THIS IS MY MOM.
THIS IS MY DAD.
THIS IS MY LITTER BROTHER BEN
ARTHUR AND THIS IS MY LITTLE
SISTER ARABELLE.
An orange arrow points to Ben. Green text reads, “Brother Ben Arthur.” A pink arrow points to Arabelle as she peers curiously from behind Ben Arthur. Light orange text reads, “Sister Arabelle.”
Lisa says, SO, HANNABELLE, I KNOW
YOU DON'T HAVE ANY PETS BUT WE
HEARD THAT YOU LOVE ANIMALS.
Hannabelle says, YES, AND I'M WRITING
A BOOK ABOUT THEM.
[Upbeat music plays]
Lisa says, WELL, WE'VE BEEN DOING
SOME RESEARCH OF OUR OWN...
Eric says, AND WE WOULD LIKE TO HELP
YOU HELP THE LOCAL WILDLIFE.
Eric stands beside Hannabelle in her backyard. He looks through the binoculars.
Eric asks, SO, IS THERE ANY
WILD BEASTS HERE?
Hannabelle says, NO, NOT REALLY.
Eric says, YEAH, I CAN'T IMAGINE SO.
Lisa says, THERE ARE PROBABLY MORE
ANIMALS IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS THAN
YOU REALIZE.
THERE CAN BE SKUNKS, SQUIRRELS
OR EVEN FOXES AT NIGHT BUT
THEY'RE HARD TO SEE IN THE DARK.
[Popping]
Eric asks, SO, WHAT ABOUT BIRDS?
Hannabelle says, I'VE TRIED ATTRACTING
BIRDS IN MY BACKYARD WITH SEEDS
BUT IT DIDN'T GO QUITE AS PLANNED.
SOME WERE EATEN BUT I DON'T
THINK IT WAS BY BIRDS.
IT WAS PROBABLY BY
SQUIRRELS OR SOMETHING.
Eric says, SQUIRRELS.
SQUIRRELS, THEY LIKE TO
EAT EVERYTHING DON'T THEY?
Hannabelle says, YUP.
[Upbeat music plays]
Eric says, WELL, HANNABELLE,
I KNOW A PLACE WHERE WE CAN
GET UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
WITH BIRDS. IT'S GONNA BE A
LOT OF FUN. READY?
Hannabelle says, OKAY.
Eric says, ALL RIGHT, LET'S GET…
LET'S GET GOING.
[Upbeat music plays]
The electronic voice says, GREEN SQUAD.
[Upbeat music plays]
Birds perch on a branch in an enclosure.
[Birds sing, upbeat music plays]
Eric narrates, THE BIRDS DIDN'T
COME TO HANNABELLE, SO WE'RE
BRINGING HANNABELLE TO THE BIRDS.
Eric says, SO, HANNABELLE, WELCOME
TO THE OTTAWA VALLEY WILD BIRD
CARE CENTRE AND HERE'S PATTY.
Hannabelle says, HI.
A pink arrow points to Patty. Yellow text reads, “Patty.” Orange text beneath that reads, “Education Program Manager.” Patty has short light brown hair. She wears a navy blue shirt with a name tag pinned over her heart.
Patty says, SO NICE TO MEET
YOU, WELCOME.
Hannabelle says, NICE TO MEET YOU TOO.
SO, THE OTTAWA VALLEY WILD BIRD
CARE CENTRE IS THE ONLY PLACE
HERE IN THE OTTAWA AREA THAT CAN
TAKE IN ANY INJURED OR ORPHANED,
OR SICK WILD BIRDS.
WE SEE OVER A HUNDRED AND
TWENTY DIFFERENT KINDS OF BIRDS
EVERY YEAR.
SO, WE NEVER KNOW WHAT'S GONNA
WALK IN THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR.
A purple arrow points to Indigo. Dark orange text reads, “American Kestrel.”
Patty says, SO, THIS IS INDIGO.
INDIGO IS AN AMERICAN KESTREL.
HE'S THE SMALLEST SPECIES
OF FALCON IN NORTH AMERICA.
Hannabelle asks, WHAT DOES INDIGO EAT?
[Flapping, upbeat music continues]
Patty replies, REALLY GREAT QUESTION.
SO, AS A FALCON, HE'S A BIRD OF PREY.
SO HE'S EATING OTHER ANIMALS BUT
BECAUSE HE'S SO SMALL HE EATS A
LOT OF INSECTS. IT'S LIKE A LITTLE
APPETIZER FOR INDIGO.
[Patty chuckles]
Hannabelle uses tweezers to feed Indigo an insect. Text beside Indigo reads, “Yum.” Eric feeds Indigo. Text next to Indigo reads, “Hey! That’s for me!”
Patty says, INDIGO'S DIFFERENT BECAUSE
HE'S WHAT WE CALL IMPRINTED BECAUSE
PEOPLE HAD HIM FOR SO LONG HE'S
USED TO PEOPLE BUT ALL THE BIRDS
INSIDE THE HOSPITAL - IT'S VERY
IMPORTANT THAT WE KEEP THEM
AS WILD AS POSSIBLE.
SO, AS MUCH AS WE REALLY LOVE TO
LOOK AT THEM AND WOULD WANT TO
TOUCH THEM OR CUDDLE THEM, WE
REALLY CAN'T BECAUSE WE WANT
THEM TO RETURN TO THE WILD
AS WILD AS THEY CAME HERE.
Eric narrates, AND WE HAD A SPECIAL SURPRISE.
HANNABELLE GOT TO RELEASE A
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER BACK
INTO THE WILD.
Hannabelle smiles. She carries a covered container into a field full of tall grass. A yellow arrow points at an opening in the container. Red text reads, “Yello-bellied sapsucker.”
Eric says, HERE YOU GO LITTLE BUDDY.
HAVE A NICE MIGRATION.
IT'S OKAY. COME ON.
WE NEED SOME WORDS OF
ENCOURAGEMENT HANNABELLE.
Hannabelle says, COME ON, YOU
CAN GET OUT NOW.
[Flapping]
Hannabelle and Eric say, OH!
AND HE'S GONE AND HE'S ON
THAT BRANCH OVER THERE.
Patty says, HE'S JUST UP THERE.
HE'S PROBABLY GONNA LOOK AROUND.
"OH MY GOODNESS. I'M BACK IN
THE WILD".
Eric says, “I'M FREE, I CAN FLY.”
BYE BIRDIE.
[Flapping, upbeat music continues]
Hannabelle says, BYE.
I HOPE THE BIRD FINDS A MATE
AND FINDS A PLACE WHERE TO STAY.
Eric says, ALL RIGHT, LET'S GO.
LET'S GET INSIDE. IT'S STARTING
TO POUR.
Hannabelle says, OKAY.
[Patty and Eric laugh]
Back inside, Patty, Hannabelle, and Eric wear masks and gloves. Hannabelle and Eric wear white laboratory coats over their street clothes.
Patty says, ALL RIGHT, HANNABELLE,
I HAVE ONE LAST ROOM TO SHOW
YOU BUT THIS ROOM HAS A FEW
MORE RULES.
SO, THIS ROOM IS OUR RAPTOR ROOM.
IT HAS ALL OF OUR HAWKS
AND EAGLES AND THINGS
LIKE THAT AND SO IF YOU THINK
ABOUT IT -IN THE WILD THESE BIRDS
ARE FAR AWAY FROM PEOPLE - SO
IT'S VERY IMPORTANT FOR US TO
KEEP OUR VOICES VERY LOW OR
SILENT COMPLETELY.
SO, THE FIRST BIRD WE'RE GONNA
LOOK AT IS A PEREGRINE FALCON.
[Upbeat music plays]
Eric says, NO WAY. ARE YOU SERIOUS?
Patty says, I'M SERIOUS, YEAH.
THE FASTEST ANIMAL IN THE WORLD
IS IN OUR BUILDING AND YOU GET
TO SEE IT TODAY.
[Falcon calls]
Eric narrates, WOW!
THE FASTEST ANIMAL IN
THE WORLD, HANNABELLE.
Patty says, SO THE PEREGRINE FALCON
WAS ONE OF THE MOST ENDANGERED
BIRDS. AT ONE POINT IN TIME WE THOUGHT
THEY WERE COMPLETELY GONE FROM
ONTARIO AND IT WAS BECAUSE A
PESTICIDE - A CHEMICAL WE WERE
USING TO KILL BUGS.
SO WE'VE BANNED THIS CHEMICAL
AND THEY'RE NO LONGER ENDANGERED.
OKAY, LET'S GO.
Eric says, MY HEART'S ACTUALLY
POUNDING. SHHHH.
Red text reads, “SHHHHHH.”
Eric shuts a door.
[Click]
The falcon flies up on to a branch. A yellow arrow points to it. Red text reads, “Peregrine Falcon.”
[Flapping]
Eric whispers, LOOK AT THAT, SO COOL!
A subtitle reads, “Look at that, so cool!”
Eric makes a heart sign with his fingers.
[Rustling]
Patty, Hannabelle, and Eric stand outside of the raptor room.
Hannabelle asks, ARE BIRDS IN DANGER?
DO WE NEED TO PROTECT THEM?
Patty replies, ABSOLUTELY.
THEY'RE LOSING THEIR HABITAT.
SO, WE'RE LOSING A LOT
OF BIRDS EVERY YEAR.
SO, IT'S SO IMPORTANT TO
PROTECT ALL OF OUR SPECIES.
WE CAN, TOGETHER,
MAKE A REALLY BIG
DIFFERENCE AND I'M PRETTY
SURE THAT YOU ARE
GOING TO BE A PART
OF THAT MOVEMENT.
Eric puts a bag with plants inside of it on a table in Hannabelle’s backyard.
[Upbeat music plays]
Eric narrates, PATTY GAVE US A
FEW "DO IT AT HOME" IDEAS FOR
HELPING THE BIRDS.
He says, ALL RIGHT, LET'S GO.
I'M GONNA GIVE
YOU YOUR OWN PLANT.
Eric and Hannabelle plant the plants in soil.
Eric narrates, THIS ONE MIGHT ATTRACT
BIRDS TO HANNABELLE'S BACKYARD.
WE'RE STARTING HER VERY OWN
BERRY PATCH.
Hannabelle says, OKAY.
Eric says, VERY GOOD.
THAT'S IT AND LET'S
GET SOME SOIL IN THERE.
Hannabelle asks, DO YOU THINK THE
BIRDS WILL LIKE THE RASPBERRIES?
Eric says, I THINK THEY'RE GONNA
LOVE THE RASPBERRIES. I THINK
THEY'RE GONNA LOVE THIS AREA.
IT'S KINDA SHELTERED WITH THE FENCE.
THEY'RE GONNA COME, IMAGINE
THEY'RE GONNA FLY HERE, DOOT
DOOT DOOT DOOT DOOT. MUNCH
ON SOME RASPBERRIES AND THEN
TAKE OFF.
[Flapping]
Eric narrates, NEXT WE PROTECT BIRDS
FROM CRASHING INTO WINDOWS.
Lisa, Eric, and Hannabelle stand by a window in Hannabelle’s house.
Eric says, SO, WE FOUND THE BIGGEST
WINDOW IN YOUR HOUSE AND WE'RE
GONNA DRAW SOME DESIGNS.
I BROUGHT SQUAD MEMBER
LISA TO HELP US OUT.
Lisa says, YEP, I'M AN ARTISTE.
SO, I'LL BE ABLE TO REALLY HELP.
Text reads, “Ask a grown-up before doing this at home!”
[Popping, upbeat music plays]
Eric says, ALL RIGHT, POUR YOUR
HEART AND SOUL OUT.
YOU'RE A TRUE ARTIST.
I'M GONNA DRAW
LIKE A CLOUD HERE.
Lisa says, LET OUT ALL OF YOUR
CREATIVE PASSIONS.
Hannabelle and Eric draw on the window.
[Upbeat music continues]
Eric narrates, WINDOW COLLISIONS
ARE A BIG PROBLEM AND A MAJOR CAUSE
OF BIRDS GETTING HURT OR KILLED.
He says, AND THAT'S BECAUSE THEY SEE
THEIR REFLECTION OR THEY SEE
REFLECTION OF TREES OR THEY DON'T
EVEN SEE THE GLASS.
SO, THE FACT THAT WE'RE PUTTING
DESIGNS LET'S THEM KNOW THAT:
"HEY, THERE'S A WINDOW HERE."
Eric says, SO, WE'VE TALKED A LOT
ABOUT BIRDS TODAY BUT I KNOW YOU
LOVE ALL ANIMALS, RIGHT?
Hannabelle says, ABSOLUTELY.
Eric says, I THINK YOU BETTER GO
SEE KYLE BECAUSE HE'S GOT A
REALLY COOL PROJECT.
I THINK YOU'RE GONNA LOVE IT.
[Upbeat music plays]
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Animated music notes and the words “La la la” rise from a red and green parrot’s mouth.
Eric narrates, BIRDS ARE SO AWESOME
BUT THEY DO SO MUCH MORE THAN
JUST SING AND LOOK PRETTY.
THEY MOVE SEEDS AROUND WHICH
KEEPS FORESTS HEALTHY AND THEY
FLY LONG DISTANCES SO THEY CAN
EVEN START NEW PLANTS IN PLACES
WHERE THEY'VE BEEN DESTROYED.
AND THEY EAT TONNES OF BUGS
AND I MEAN THAT LITERALLY.
FIVE HUNDRED MILLION TONNES
EVERY YEAR TO BE EXACT.
[Buzzing]
Eric narrates, WHEN THERE ARE TOO
MANY BUGS, THEY CAN DESTROY TREES
AND CROPS SO IT'S AN IMPORTANT JOB.
THANKS MS. BIRD.
YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE
MAKES BIRDS SPECIAL?
THEIR POOP. IT'S FULL OF
SEEDS AND NUTRIENTS.
PLANTS LOVE IT BECAUSE IT HELPS
THEM GROW STRONG AND HEALTHY.
IT'S SO VALUABLE SPAIN STARTED
A WAR OVER AN ISLAND COVERED
IN BIRD POOP.
Text reads, “North Chincha Island, Peru.”
[Plopping, squawking]
Eric narrates, BIRDS ARE THE BEST.
[Upbeat music plays]
Green text reads, “Green.” Pink text beneath it reads, “Squad.”
The electronic voice says, GREEN SQUAD.
Kyle and Hannabelle walk on a beach. Animated fish swim over them. Boats are moored at piers further along the shore.
Kyle says, THERE'S ALL KINDS OF
FISH HERE. TROUT, PERCH, WALLEYE,
MUSKY, EVEN LAKE STURGEON.
THOSE ARE TALLER THAN ME AND CAN
LIVE FOR MORE THAN A HUNDRED YEARS.
Kyle and Hannabelle sit on a log on the beach. Hannabelle points to scraps of plastic half-buried in the wet sand.
Hannabelle says, LOOK AT THAT PLASTIC.
THAT CAN'T BE GOOD FOR THE FISH.
Kyle says, IT'S DEFINITELY NOT GOOD
FOR THE FISH BUT I KNOW SOMEONE
WHO'S TRYING TO HELP.
[Upbeat music plays]
A woman with long straight black hair waves. She wears a grey t-shirt with a blue turtle outlined in white. Text over the turtle reads, “Deep Blue Cleanup.”
The woman says, HEY GUYS.
WELCOME TO THE
NEPEAN SAILING CLUB.
A purple arrow points to Melanie. Light orange text reads, “Melanie.” Red text beneath that reads, “Teacher and Founder of Deep Blue Cleanup.”
Kyle says, HEY THERE.
SO, HANNABELLE, THIS IS MELANIE.
SHE IS WITH DEEP-BLUE CLEAN-UP
AND SHE HELPS TO KEEP OUR
RIVERS CLEAN.
Hannabelle says, WHAT HAPPENS
WHEN THE PLASTICS GETS INTO
THE RIVERS?
[Upbeat music plays]
Melanie explains, WHAT HAPPENS IS
THAT WITH THE SUN AND WITH
THE CURRENTS AND WITH THE
WAVES THE PLASTIC STARTS TO
BREAKDOWN INTO SMALLER
PLASTICS CALLED MICRO-PLASTICS.
IT'S NOT VERY GOOD FOR OUR
WILDLIFE BECAUSE THEY END UP
EATING THESE TINY PIECES OF PLASTIC.
THEY CAN GET SICK AND SOMETIMES
THEY CAN DIE BECAUSE THEY HAVE
A STOMACH FULL OF PLASTIC.
Purple text over a pail full of small pieces of plastic reads, “Plastics filtered from water.”
[Popping]
Kyle says, AND THEY CAN END
UP ANYWHERE.
LIKE THE BIGGER FISH EAT THE
SMALLER FISH AND THE BIRDS EAT
THE FISH AND THEN SUDDENLY
IT'S ALL OVER THE PLACE.
Melanie says, EXACTLY.
IT MAKES ITS WAY
INTO OUR FOOD CHAIN.
Hannabelle asks, WHAT CAN WE DO
ABOUT THE POLLUTION IN THE RIVERS?
Melanie says, WELL, I HAVE SOMETHING
I'D LIKE TO SHOW YOU THAT CAN HELP
WITH THAT.
Melanie points to a device almost entirely submerged beside a dock. Purple and green text reads, “Seabin.”
[Water sloshes]
She says, SO, THIS IS THE SEABIN.
IT IS AMAZING.
IT'S CALLED A TRASH TRAPPING
DEVICE BECAUSE IT PICKS UP TRASH
WITHIN A TEN KILOMETRE RADIUS.
Kyle says, WOW.
Melanie says, IT'S GOT A BIG CATCH TODAY.
THERE'S QUITE A BIT IN HERE.
Melanie dumps the contents of the seabin on a table.
Kyle says, WOW. THAT'S A LOT.
WITH THIS PLASTIC THAT'S IN
THERE I HEAR THAT IT STICKS
AROUND FOR A REALLY LONG TIME.
[Clumping]
Melanie says, OH YEAH.
MICRO-PLASTICS - THEY DON'T
GO AWAY.
Hannabelle says, I THINK THAT'S
PRETTY COOL BUT IT ALSO
LOOKS GROSS.
Melanie asks, DO YOU SEE
THIS, HANNABELLE?
Hannabelle says, YES.
Melanie says, IT IS A PIECE
OF STYROFOAM.
DO YOU SEE HOW TINY STYROFOAM
CAN GET WHEN IT BREAKS DOWN?
SO, THAT IS JUST GOING TO BE
FLOATING AROUND IN THE OCEAN
IF WE DON'T GET IT OUT.
Kyle says, OH. YUCKY.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle says, WE SEE A LOT OF STUFF
THAT WASHES UP ON, YOU KNOW,
OUR BEACHES AND SHORES.
SO, HOW DO WE CLEAN THAT UP?
Melanie says, WELL, WE DO A SHORELINE
CLEAN-UP AND WE ACTUALLY HAVE ONE
HAPPENING RIGHT NOW. LET'S GO.
Melanie leads Hannabelle and Kyle to a group of people. Many of them hold large white buckets. Lisa looks up from a bucket. Text reads, “Hi.” “Hey hi.”
[Popping]
Lisa says, HEY IT'S SO GREAT TO SEE YOU!
[Background chatter, upbeat music continues]
Later, Hannabelle picks a box up from a beach.
Kyle says, IT'S GOOD TO KNOW THAT
WE'RE SAVING ANIMALS ON LAND
NOW AND IN THE SEA.
Hannabelle says, YEAH, THAT'S TRUE.
Kyle says, HOW MUCH HAVE WE
PICKED UP SO FAR?
WE FOUND THESE BUT WE MOSTLY
FOUND PAPER AND SOME PLASTIC.
Kyle says, SO, IT LOOKS LIKE WE GOT
A LOT OF DIFFERENT STUFF IN HERE
WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO PROBABLY
SORT THAT OUT, RIGHT?
Hannabelle says, YEAH.
Soon, they stand at a table sorting the items from their bucket.
A child says, PAPER, PAPER!
Kyle narrates, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE
THAT EVERYTHING THAT CAN BE
RECYCLED OR REPURPOSED GETS
SENT TO THE PROPER FACILITY.
[Background chatter, upbeat music continues]
Lisa says, I DON'T KNOW WHAT
THIS IS. IT'S METAL. KIND OF LOOKS
LIKE A BOBBY PIN.
Melanie says, A GIANT.
A REALLY GIANT...
Lisa agrees, YEAH.
FOR A LOT OF HAIR, FOR SURE.
DO YOU WANT TO PUT IT WITH
THE METALS?
Hannabelle says, OKAY.
[Kyle laughs]
Kyle asks, WHERE ARE
THESE GONNA GO?
Eric says, THEY'RE GONNA GO HERE.
Kyle says, NOBODY'S GONNA WEAR THOSE NOW.
Eric says, I'LL WEAR THESE SOCKS.
[Upbeat music plays]
Hannabelle sits in her living room.
She says, THE BEACH CLEANUP WAS
FUN AND ALSO HELPFUL FOR THE EARTH.
ONE OF THE PARTS THAT I DID LIKE
WAS THE LITTLE BABY TURTLE THAT
CAME BY TO SAY HI.
I THINK IT WAS PROBABLY HAPPY TO
SEE THAT PEOPLE WERE TRYING TO
MAKE A CAUSE TO HELP TO
CLEAN UP THE BEACHES.
Melanie says, HANNABELLE, I JUST
WANTED TO TAKE A MINUTE TO
GIVE YOU SOMETHING.
IT IS A T-SHIRT.
YOU ARE NOW A DEEP
BLUE HERO AMBASSADOR.
Eric says, IT'S GONNA LOOK GREAT.
Melanie says, IT LOOK S SO GOOD.
Lisa asks, SO, HOW'S THE
SHORELINE LOOKING?
DID WE DO A GOOD JOB?
Red text reads, “Amazing.”
Melanie says, THESE KIDS DID
AN AMAZING JOB TODAY.
WE'RE SO HAPPY.
Lisa says, SO, I KNOW YOU LOVE
ANIMALS BUT YOU DON'T HAVE
ANY PETS AT HOME, RIGHT?
Hannabelle says, YEAH, I DON'T.
WELL, I GOT A CREEPY
CRAWLY MAJOR SURPRISE
FOR YOU BACK AT
THE HOUSE THAT I THINK
YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE.
Hannabelle smiles and says, OH REALLY?
Lisa says, YEAH.
[Upbeat music plays]
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
[Upbeat music continues]
Kyle narrates, THERE'S SO MUCH PLASTIC
IN THE OCEAN THAT IT CAN MAKE A
CHAIN THAT REACHES ALL THE
WAY TO THE MOON AND BACK.
COOL SOLUTIONS LIKE THE SEA BIN
ARE HELPING BUT WE CAN ALSO
TURN OFF THE TAP AND REDUCE THE
PLASTIC THAT WE USE BUT HAVE
YOU EVER HEAR OF NUDE FOOD?
Animated plastic items drip from an animated faucet.
[Squeaking]
He continues, IT'S FOOD THAT DOESN'T
USE ANY KIND OF PLASTIC WRAP.
THERE ARE NUDE FOOD STORES
POPPING UP ALL AROUND THE WORLD
- WHERE PEOPLE BRING THEIR OWN
BAGS AND CONTAINERS AND FILL
THEM UP.
THERE ARE EVEN SOME SCHOOLS
THAT ARE DOING NUDE FOOD DAY
TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO BRING
ZERO WASTE LUNCHES.
SO DON'T BE RUDE OR PRUDE.
MAKE YOUR FOOD NUDE DUDE.
[Upbeat music plays]
Green text reads, “Green.” Pink text beneath it reads, “Squad.”
The electronic voice says, GREEN SQUAD.
Lisa and Hannabelle sit on a red mat in Hannabelle’s living room.”
Lisa says, THESE AREN'T YOUR TYPICAL
PETS, THEY'RE SOMETHING A LITTLE
BIT DIFFERENT BUT LET ME INTRODUCE
YOU TO THE RED WIGGLERS.
Lisa holds out a small bucket of dirt with wiggling worms.
Hannabelle says, WOW!
Lisa says, YEAH.
YOU SEE THOSE?
WHAT IS THAT IN THERE?
Hannabelle says, WORMS?
Lisa says, YEAH, LOTS AND LOTS OF WORMS.
THEY'RE KIND OF CUTE, AREN'T THEY?
Hannabelle says, YEAH.
[Lisa laughs]
Lisa says, SO, WHAT WE'RE GONNA
DO IS WE HAVE THIS WORM
COMPOSTING KIT FROM A
LOCAL COMPANY AND YOU
ARE GONNA BECOME THE PROUD
OWNER OF YOUR VERY OWN WORM
COMPOSTING KIT.
[Upbeat music plays]
Lisa explains, SO, WORMS PLAY A
REALLY IMPORTANT PART IN
ECO-SYSTEMS BECAUSE THEY TURN
ORGANIC MATTER IN SOIL
INTO COMPOST.
YOU COULD PUT YOUR OWN FOOD
SCRAPS IN THERE AND THEY'LL GET
RECYCLED INTO COMPOST.
SO, LET'S TAKE EVERYTHING OUT.
Lisa unpacks a box. She uses a drill to attach wooden pieces of the compost box.
[Whirring]
Lisa asks, HOW ARE YOU DOING?
Hannabelle says, GOOD.
Lisa says, I THINK THAT LOOKS GREAT.
Hannabelle says, YEP.
[Rustling]
Lisa says, TURN IT AROUND AND
DO THE OTHER HALF ON THE
OTHER SIDE.
[Whirring drill]
Lisa says, THE NEXT STEP IS TO ADD
THE MESH ON THE BOTTOM.
[Whirring drill]
Lisa says, THERE YOU GO, NOW PRESS.
SO, NOW THAT WE FINISHED
BUILDING THE BASE WE CAN GIVE
THE WORMS NICE COMFY ORGANIC
BEDDING FOR THE WORM CITY TO
LIVE ON.
Lisa tears the cardboard box that the compost box arrived in.
[Tearing, upbeat music continues]
Lisa says, SEE HOW WE CAN USE THIS
CARDBOARD BOX OR WE CAN USE
SHREDDED PAPERS OR OLD
NEWSPAPER. YOU JUST GOTTA RIP
'EM UP PRETTY TINY.
SO NOW, WE ADD THE WORMS.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO
DO THE HONOURS?
Hannabelle says, OKAY.
Lisa says, OH, OKAY, THERE WE GO.
SO NOW, WE'RE GONNA WANT
TO SPRAY TO MAKE A MOIST
ENVIRONMENT FOR THE WORMS.
YOU CAN GO AHEAD.
Hannabelle says, OKAY.
[Water bottle sprays, upbeat music plays]
Lisa says, WORMS PLAY A REALLY IMPORTANT
ROLE IN COMPOSTING BECAUSE THEY
ADD A LOT OF GOOD NUTRIENTS
TO THE SOIL LIKE MAGNESIUM AND
CALCIUM AND NITROGEN AND THEY
CAN ALSO REMOVE SOME OF THE
TOXINS THAT ARE IN THE FOOD SCRAPS.
Hannabelle says, ONE OF THEM
IS TRYING TO ESCAPE HERE.
Lisa says, OH, I THINK HE'S HUNGRY
SO, WE CAN FEED THEM
THEIR FIRST MEAL.
SO, WE CAN GIVE THESE
WORMS OUR FOOD SCRAPS.
SO, THINGS LIKE FRUIT AND
VEGETABLE RINDS AND WASTE,
COFFEE GRINDS, TEA BAGS,
EGGSHELLS, BUT WE CAN'T GIVE
THEM MEAT, DAIRY, GRAINS BECAUSE
IT WOULD GET SMELLY AND
ATTRACT FLIES.
AS THE WORMS START TO EAT THE
FOOD SCRAPS AND TURN THEM INTO
COMPOST WHAT YOU DO IS YOU GRAB
THE NEXT LAYER AND YOU PUT IT ON
TOP AND THEN DO THE SAME THING
THAT WE DID. PUT THE BEDDING IN,
THEN THE FOOD SCRAPS.
SAME THING FOR THE NEXT LAYER
AND THEN EVENTUALLY THE LID.
[Slide whistles]
Lisa says, AS THE WORMS TURN THOSE
FOOD SCRAPS INTO COMPOST THEY'RE
GONNA WANT TO MOVE UP EACH LAYER
TO GET TO THE NEXT LEVEL OF FOOD.
SO, IT'S A WIN WIN WIN BECAUSE
YOU GET PETS, THE WORMS GET FOOD
AND YOU GET GREAT COMPOST FOR
YOUR GARDEN.
[Upbeat music plays]
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
[Upbeat music continues]
Lisa narrates, THERE ARE A FEW
WAYS TO COMPOST AND THEY'RE
ALL GREAT FOR REDUCING FOOD WASTE.
SO, WHY USE WORMS ASIDE FROM
THE FACT THAT THEY'RE CUTE?
WORM COMPOSTING, WHICH IS ALSO
CALLED VERMICOMPOSTING, DOESN'T
NEED A LOT OF SPACE. IT'S EASY.
Red and dark orange text reads, “Vermicomposting.”
[Popping, upbeat music continues]
She continues, YOU HAVE TO TAKE CARE
OF THEM BUT THE WORMS DO MOST OF
THE WORK. THEY'RE FAST TOO.
An animated worm eats waste. Text reads, “Burp.”
[Boinging, burp]
She narrates, RED WIGGLERS EAT UP TO
HALF THEIR WEIGHT EVERYDAY AND
THE BEST THING ABOUT WORMS IS...
[Flatulence releases]
Eric asks, THEIR POOP?
[Parrot squawks]
Lisa says, EXACTLY.
IT'S THE WHOLE POINT
OF VERMICOMPOSTING.
THEY EAT YOUR FOOD SCRAPS AND
THE BACTERIA IN THEIR GUTS TURNS
THEM INTO SOME OF THE BEST
FERTILIZER IN THE WORLD.
LIKE A FIVE STAR MEAL FOR PLANTS.
SO THEY'RE LIKE REALLY
CUTE LITTLE MAGICIANS.
[Chiming, popping]
[Upbeat music plays]
Green text reads, “Green.” Pink text beneath it reads, “Squad.”
The electronic voice says, GREEN SQUAD.
Eric enters the living room. He looks down at the compost box.
[Upbeat music continues]
Eric says, WOW GUYS, THIS IS AMAZING.
Hannabelle says, SO, BASICALLY IT'S
WHERE WORMS CREATE COMPOST
SO YOU CAN USE IT FOR A GARDEN
OR ANYTHING THAT HAS PLANTS IN IT.
Eric says, I LOVE HOW YOU'RE ALREADY
MAKING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE
COMPOST AND THE RASPBERRY BUSHES
OUTSIDE BECAUSE AS SOON AS IT'S
READY TRANSFER IT OUTSIDE AND
THEN THE COMPOST WILL FEED THE
RASPBERRY BUSHES AND THEN
THE BIRDS WILL EAT THOSE
RASPBERRIES, THEREFORE, IT'S
KIND OF LIKE YOUR KITCHEN SCRAPS
ARE FEEDING THE BIRDS.
ISN'T THAT GENIUS?
[Upbeat music plays]
Hannabelle says, YEAH.
Eric says, IT'S BEEN A REAL
BLAST TO GET TO KNOW YOU.
WE'VE HAD SO MUCH FUN AND
HOPEFULLY YOU CARRY ON SOME OF
THESE THINGS THAT YOU'VE LEARNED
TO DAY AND APPLY THEM IN YOUR
OWN LIFE.
Lisa says, YEAH.
WE'LL BE CHECKING IN,
IN A FEW WEEKS TO SEE
HOW YOU'RE DOING.
Hannabelle says, WELL, I'D LIKE
TO SAY THANK YOU FOR COMING.
I'VE HAD A REALLY GREAT
TIME WITH YOU GUYS TOO.
Lisa says, LET'S JUST SEE IF THE
WORMS ARE HAPPY IN THEIR
LITTLE BOX.
BYE GUYS. HAPPY COMPOSTING.
Eric and Lisa drum on the top of the compost box.
[Thumping]
[Upbeat music plays]
Orange and blue text reads, “Squad Tip.”
Kyle stands behind a table with fruits and vegetables on it.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle says, GROWING UP, I USED TO GO
TO THE SUPERMARKET A LOT WITH MY
GRANDPARENTS AND WE PICKED ALL
KINDS OF FRUITS AND VEGGIES BUT
THE WEIRDEST THAT MY GRANDMA
USED TO ASK ME IS TO FIND THE
UGLIEST FRUITS AND VEGGIES ON
THE SHELF.
SHE'D SAY STUFF LIKE
"DON'T YOU FEEL BAD FOR IT?"
IT'S LIKE NEVER GONNA FIND OUT.
SO, I'D GO, I'D PICK MY UGLY FRUITS
AND VEGGIES AND THAT WOULD BE
THE INGREDIENTS FOR OUR DINNER.
SO, NOW THAT I'M OLDER I STILL
FEEL BAD FOR THE "NOT SO PRETTY
CARROT" BUT I ALSO PICK THEM
FOR A DIFFERENT REASON.
YOU SEE, MY GRANDMA WAS RIGHT.
A LOT OF THE TIME THESE ODD
LOOKING FRUITS ACTUALLY GET
THROWN OUT AND IT'S A HUGE WASTE
OF FOOD AND THERE'S ALL KINDS OF
RECIPES YOU COULD USE THESE IN.
YOU CAN USE THESE IN SMOOTHIES,
BANANA BREADS, SOUPS...
OKAY, I GOTTA STOP.
I'M MAKING MYSELF HUNGRY.
SO, IF YOU PICK THE LESS THAN
PERFECT FRUIT, THEY'RE OFTEN
CHEAPER AND THEY TASTE JUST
AS GOOD AS ANYTHING ELSE ON
THE SHELF.
SO, DON'T BE AFRAID OF
UGLY FRUITS AND VEGETABLES.
EVEN THE WEIRD ONES
DESERVE SOME LOVE.
Kyle holds up a carrot with a bent tip.
Kyle says, GIVE THIS CARROT A NICE HOME.
He bits the carrot.
[Crunching]
[Upbeat music plays]
Green and blue text reads, “Check-in.”
Lisa, Shakira, Kyle, Sigfried, and Eric sit on a couch. A tablet is propped up on a wooden table in front of them.
[Upbeat music continues]
Eric says, WE'RE SUPER PUMPED
TO SEE WHAT HANNABELLE'S BEEN
UP TO.
Hannabelle appears on the tablet.
Hannabelle says, HI SQUAD.
THIS IS FINISHED FOR NOW.
I STILL NEED TO PUT SOME
IMPROVEMENT THOUGH BUT I THINK
THE BIRDS WILL IGNORE THIS
WINDOW AND NOT JUST GO FLYING
INTO IT.
THEY'LL SEE THESE
LINES AND KNOW "OH,
WE CAN'T GO HERE.
IT'S NOT A CLEAR SPACE".
Eric says, I LOVE TO SEE THAT SHE'S KEEPING
THE WINDOW UPDATED WITH ALL OF
HER NEW DESIGNS AND SHE'S
USING DIFFERENT COLOURS LIKE THE
COLOUR BLUE WHICH IS REALLY FUN.
Shakira says, YEAH AND DEPENDING
ON THE SEASON SHE CAN CHANGE IT
UP LIKE IF IT'S HALLOWEEN SHE CAN
USE BATS OR WINTER - SNOWFLAKES.
Hannabelle says, I TOOK CARE OF THE
RASPBERRY BUSH BY WATERING IT.
[Eric gasps]
Hannabelle says, I EXPECT THERE TO BE
THIS START OF LIKE BERRIES STARTING
TO GROW. EVENTUALLY BIRDS
WILL START COMING.
Eric says, IT'S GONNA TAKE ABOUT
A YEAR FOR THOSE RASPBERRIES
TO COME IN. NO WORRIES.
GARDENING'S A TOUGH THING
AND YOU'RE DOING A GREAT JOB.
Hannabelle says, I LIKED WHEN
I WAS FEEDING INDIGO.
I ALSO LIKED THE MORE LIKE
PREDATORY BIRDS - THE MORE
SILENT ONES.
Eric says, I MEAN THAT WAS SO COOL.
WE GOT TO VISIT MY FAVOURITE
BIRD OF ALL TIME - THE PEREGRINE
FALCON. IT WAS SUCH A COOL EXPERIENCE
TO HAVE WITH HANNABELLE.
Hannabelle says, I THINK VOLUNTEERING
AT THE BIRD CENTRE WOULD BE A REALLY
GREAT EXPERIENCE AND IT WOULD HELP
EXPERIENCING HOW IT WOULD BE TO
BECOME A VET BECAUSE PART OF
IT TAKING CARE OF ANIMALS AND
KNOWING HOW TO MAINTAIN
THEM AND MANAGE THEM.
Lisa says, IT REALLY ALIGNS WITH
HER INTERESTS OF BECOMING A VET.
IT'S SO NICE TO SEE HER HAVE SUCH A
LOVE AND CARE FOR ANIMALS ALREADY.
Sigfried says, IT'S FANTASTIC TO SEE
THAT SHE'S NOT ONLY CONNECTING
WITH THE ANIMALS BUT SHE'S ALSO
MAKING CONNECTIONS WITH HER
COMMUNITY AS WELL.
Hannabelle says, TODAY WE'RE GOING
TO BE CHECKING UP ON THE WORMS.
I HAVE CUCUMBERS HERE AND I ALSO
HAVE MY SPRAY BOTTLE SO I CAN
SPRAY IT ON HERE WHEN I'M FINISHED.
AND I'M NOW GONNA PLOP
THESE CUCUMBERS IN HERE. THERE.
THE WORMS ARE REALLY HAPPY BUT
I SHOULDN'T EXCITE THEM THAT MUCH
BECAUSE I GUESS SOME OF THEM
ARE TRYING TO SLEEP RIGHT NOW.
[Clunking, water sprays]
Lisa says, HANNABELLE'S DOING
AN AMAZING JOB KEEPING UP WITH
HER PETS - THE WORMS-AND IT'S
GREAT THAT THEY'RE PRODUCING
SOME GREAT COMPOST FOR HER AND
THAT, AS WELL, SHE'S KEEPING UP
WITH PUTTING HER FOOD SCRAPS
IN THERE. IT LOOKS REALLY GREAT.
IT WAS REALLY FUN AND I
REALLY LIKED ALL THE MISSIONS.
THEY TAUGHT ME A LOT.
Eric says, SHE'S GONNA BE A
FANTASTIC VETERINARIAN WHEN
SHE GROWS OLDER.
Sharkira says, SHE ALREADY HAS SO
MUCH EXPERIENCE RIGHT?
Sigfried says, YEAH.
Lisa says, HANNABELLE REALLY IS
SUCH A CURIOUS PERSON AND, I MEAN,
EVEN THAT BOOK THAT SHE'S WRITING
ABOUT THE RAINFOREST, SHE REALLY
LOVES TO GET TO KNOW THINGS
ABOUT ANIMALS.
Shakira says, IT SHOWS HOW MUCH SHE
CARES BECAUSE SHE'S ALREADY DOING
SO MUCH AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE.
Lisa says, HANNABELLE IS A BIG
WIN FOR THE WILDLIFE.
The Green Squad cheers, GO HANNABELLE!
End credits roll.
[Upbeat music plays]
A child says, WHEE!
Colourful text reads, “tvo kids.”
[Child giggles]
A blue eye peers out of the Apartment Eleven Productions logo. Text beneath it reads, “Apartment Eleven Productions.”
[Squeaking]
