Transcript: Eli the Eel
A child says, WHEEE!
Colourful text reads, “tvo kids” plus “Apartment Eleven Productions,” “Original.” A purple circle with a ring attached to each side appears over “Apartment Eleven.”
[Child giggles]
Kyle, Lisa and Sigfried sit side by side.
[Upbeat music plays]
Lisa says, IN A CARTOON,
WHEN SOMEONE HAS AN IDEA,
A LIGHT BULB
POPS UP ABOVE THEIR HEAD.
Sigfried says, A CLASSIC CARTOON STYLE.
Kyle says, WELL,
THE KIDS WE'RE ABOUT TO MEET
TODAY HAVE SOME GREAT IDEAS
TO CONSERVE ENERGY
BY TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS.
Lisa says, BRIGHT IDEA.
An animated light bulb appears above Lisa’s head.
[Ding]
Lisa says, LET'S MEET THEM FACE TO FACE.
Kyle says, MIGHT WANT TO TURN
THAT OFF FIRST.
[Lisa snaps fingers]
Lisa says, THANKS, KYLE.
[Upbeat music plays]

Green text reads, “Eli the Eel.”
[Slide whistle]
Everyone says, AND THIS IS ELI
THE ELECTRIC EEL.
Animated sparks fly off Eli.
[Crackling, upbeat music continues]
Lexie says, WE ARE STUDENTS IN GRADE
SIX, AND OUR MISSION IS TO SAVE
ENERGY AROUND OUR SCHOOL.
Gracen says, WE PICKED
ELECTRIC EELS AS OUR MASCOT
BECAUSE THEY GENERATE OVER
SIX HUNDRED AND FIFTY VOLTS
OF ELECTRICITY.
Ocean says, ELI IS AN ELECTRIC EEL
WHO SAVES ELECTRICITY AND SAVES
MONEY, TOO.
Animated sparks fly off Eli.
[Crackling, upbeat music continues]
Lexie says, IT'S IMPORTANT
TO TURN OFF THE LIGHTS
WHEN YOU'RE NOT USING THEM.
IT'S JUST PUTTING FOSSIL FUELS
AND CARBON DIOXIDE UP IN THE AIR,
AND THAT GOES UP TO OUR EARTH.
Gracen says, FOR CLIMATE CHANGE
AND GLOBAL WARMING. SO WE
THOUGHT WE CAN TAKE ACTION.
Ocean, Gracen, Hijab and Lexie stand in front of a class of seated students.
Ocean says, THIS IS ELI.
Gracen narrates, ME AND THE CREW
WENT AROUND TO ALL THE CLASSROOMS
TELLING THEM HOW ELI WORKED
AND HOW YOU SHOULD
TURN OFF YOUR LIGHTS.
In the classroom, a girl asks, CAN WEKEEP THE LIGHTS ON
WHEN WE ARE IN CLASS?
Gracen replies, YES, YOU CAN.
BUT AS LONG AS YOU LEAVE
THE ROOM. YES.
REMIND YOUR TEACHER
TO TURN OFF THE LIGHTS.
Lexie says, WE LET THE TEACHERS PICK OUT
POSTERS AND PUT THEM UNDER THE
LIGHT SWITCH OR ON THEIR DOOR.
SO IF THEY WERE LEAVING
THE ROOM, THEY WILL REMEMBER.
[Door creaks]
Mr. Lumsden says, AS TEACHERS
WE’RE ONE OF THE WORST CULPRITS.
WE THINK IT'S AWESOME
WHEN WE GET CAUGHT.
Mr. Lumsden pushes down a light switch.
[Click]
Hijab says, THE MORE PEOPLE ARE DOING IT,
THE BETTER.
Gracen says, IT SEEMS LIKE IT'S WORKING NOW.
Ocean says, I WOULD LIKE TO GET MORE PEOPLE
TO HELP US.
Gracen says, THERE IS A HIGH SCHOOL
WHERE THERE'S BIGGER KIDS
AND WE'RE HOPING WE CAN PROBABLY
GET THEM INVOLVED.
Lexie says, WE REALLY NEED SOME HELP
TO TRY AND MAKE THIS BIGGER, BETTER
AND REALLY SAVE OUR ENVIRONMENT.
HELP US SQUAD.
Text beside Lexie reads, “Help us squad!”
Kyle, Lisa and Sigfried walk on the side of a road.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle says, ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
YOU KNOW, I REALLY MISS GRADE SCHOOL.
Text reads, “Green Squad Yearbook.” Animated pages flip in a book and reveal a photograph of young Lisa posing beside a plate of baked goods. Text over her photograph reads, “Jr. Baking Champ Lisa.”
Lisa says, I LOVED ANYTHING
TO DO WITH MATH AND MEASUREMENT,
WHICH IS PROBABLY WHY
I LOVE COOKING SO MUCH NOW.
Kyle says, I LOVED MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE.
A photograph of young Kyle shows him holding a microphone. Text to the left of his photograph reads, “Rock On! Kyle.”
Kyle says, I GOT TO SAY, I DON'T THINK
I'VE CHANGED A BIT.
A photograph of young Eli shows him standing in front of a microphone. Text over the photograph reads, “Change Maker. Sigfried.”
Sigfried says, I WAS REALLY INTO
ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISM
AND COMING UP WITH SMART
MESSAGES TO HELP SOLVE
CLIMATE CHANGE.
THE ELI THE EEL GROUP
ARE MY KIND OF PEOPLE.
Kyle, Sigfried and Lisa enter the school. Text beside them reads, “Hey hey hey.” Hijab, Ocean, Lexie, Gracen and Mr. Lumsden wait for them in a hallway. Text beside them reads, “Hi.” “Hi.” “Hi.”
Everyone says, HI.
Lisa says, THANKS FOR HAVING US.
IT’S VERY NICE SCHOOL.
AND ELI IS SO CUTE.
Ocean passes Eli to Lisa.
Lisa says, THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Lisa puts Eli around her neck and pretends to be shocked. Animated sparks surround her.
[Crackling, giggling]
Lisa says, SO WE REALLY ADMIRE ALL
THE WORK THAT YOU'VE BEEN DOING SO FAR.
BUT I HAVE SOME IDEAS
ON HOW WE CAN, YOU KNOW,
TAKE IT UP A NOTCH
AND REALLY SHOW KIDS
THE IMPORTANCE OF POWERING DOWN.
AND WE'LL CALL IT THE ELI
THE EEL STARTER KIT.
Red and orange text reads, “Eli the Eel Starter Kit.”
Lisa says, BUT FIRST, I THINKWE NEED TO GET SOME FACTS.
COME ON, WE'RE LATE FOR CLASS.
[Bell rings, upbeat music continues]
Lisa, Kyle, Sigfried and the Eli the Eel group play floor hockey in a school gymnasium.
The electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
Text reads, “Green Squad.”
Mr. Lumsden opens a door and everyone follows him into a classroom.
[Click]
Lisa narrates, THE ELI CREW HAS BEEN
TALKING TO YOUNGER STUDENTS
AND LEAVING BEHIND COLORFUL
POSTERS AS A REMINDER
TO TURN OFF THE LIGHTS.
THIS YEAR, THEY WANT THEIR CAMPAIGN
TO MAKE AN EVEN BIGGER DIFFERENCE.
[Light switches clicking]
Lisa continues, SO WHY NOT SHOW PEOPLE
HOW MUCH ENERGY THEY'RE SAVING
AND MAKE A CONTEST OUT OF IT?
Lisa says, SO WE'VE BEEN TALKING
A LOT ABOUT SAVING ENERGY,
WHICH IS GREAT, BUT IT'S ALSO
IMPORTANT TO KEEP TRACK OF THAT
AND KNOW EXACTLY HOW MUCH ENERGY
WE'RE ACTUALLY SAVING.
[Upbeat music plays]
Text reads, “Thirty-six bulbs multiplied by thirty-two watts equals one point one five two Kilowatts per hour.” “One point one five two Kilowatts per hour rounded down equals one Kilowatt hour of energy saved!” “Off.”
[Clicking, ticking clock]
Lisa narrates, YOUR CLASSROOM HAS
THIRTY-SIX FLUORESCENT BULBS
THAT ARE THIRTY-TWO WATTS EACH.
WE WERE ABLE TO CALCULATE THAT
FOR EVERY HOUR THE LIGHTS ARE ON,
YOUR CLASSROOM USES ONE KILOWATT
HOUR OF ENERGY.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH
ONE KILOWATT HOUR OF ENERGY?
YOU COULD BLEND TWO HUNDRED SMOOTHIES
OR BLOW DRY TWENTY HEADS OF HAIR.
Numbers read, “two hundred” and “twenty.”
[Popping]
Lisa says, SO WE FINISHED UP
OUR CALCULATIONS AND WE'RE
ACTUALLY GOING TO USE LITTLE
CALCULATION CARDS AND WE'LL
PUT THOSE IN THE ELI THE EEL
STARTER KITS SO THAT ALL THE
OTHER CLASSES CAN KEEP TRACK
OF HOW MUCH ENERGY THEY'RE
SAVING AS WELL.
BUT FOR A MORE VISUAL AND KIND
OF CRAFTY REPRESENTATION,
WE ARE GOING TO USE
THIS ELI THE EEL ELECTRICITY
TRACKER IT'S VERY CUTE, RIGHT?
[Chuckling]
Mr. Lumsden says, CUTE, VERY CUTE.
Lisa says, VERY CUTE.
Lisa says, SO WE'RE
GOING TO MAKE SOME OF THESE
THAT WE CAN PUT THEM
IN THE STARTER KITS AND
THE CLASSES CAN ALSO KEEP TRACK.
WHY DON'T YOU GUYS START
CUTTING OUT FROM LIKE,
THE NECK UP OF ELI'S HEAD SLIP.
WE CAN MAKE A BUNCH
JUST LIKE THIS.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT
THESE ARE?
Blue text reads, “Cubes.”
Lexie says, CUBES.
[Upbeat music plays, tapping]
Lisa says, WE HAVE A COUPLE ALREADY
ON ELI HERE, BUT ESSENTIALLY,
EACH CLASS FOR EVERY KILOWATT
HOUR OF ELECTRICITY SAVED.
Text reads, “One cube equals one Kilowatt hour saved.”
Lisa says, THEY GET TO ADD A CUBE UNTIL
THEY HAVE JUST A GINORMOUS ELI
THE EEL MADE OUT OF CUBES, EACH
CLASS WILL GET ONE STARTER KIT.
SO YOU CAN GO INTO THEIR CLASS,
GIVE THEM A NICE PRESENTATION,
GIVE THEM THE STARTER KIT,
AND THEN SEE THE ELECTRICITY
THAT YOU'VE SAVED FROM THERE.
BUT I THINK THAT THERE'S
A WHOLE GROUP OF PEOPLE IN
THE SCHOOL WHO WE HAVEN'T
CHALLENGED YET.
ARE YOU GUYS
READY TO HAVE SOME FUN?
Blue and purple text reads, “Teacher Challenge.”
Mr. Lumsden, Hijab, Ocean, Lexie and Gracen say, YEAH!
The children run down a hallway behind Lisa. They peer around a corner.
[Locker doors bang, exciting music plays]
[Knocking on door]
A woman with long curly black hair says, COME IN.
Text beside an arrow pointing to the woman reads, “Ms. Cholasta. Principal.”
[Gentle music plays]
Lexie says, HI, MS. CHOLASTA.
WE ARE TRYING TO GET STAFF
TO JOIN OUR PROJECT.
ARE YOU UP FOR IT?
Mr. Cholasta says, OF COURSE.
AFTER ALL THE HARD WORK
THAT YOU ALL HAVE BEEN DOING.
[Paper rustles]
Ocean says, ALL YOU ACTUALLY DO
IS PUT THIS POSTER UNDER YOUR
LIGHT SWITCH SO YOU CAN BE REMINDED
TO TURN OFF THE LIGHTS
WHEN YOU LEAVE THE ROOM.
Mr. Cholasta says, OKAY.
Gracen says, IT'S A STAFF AND
STUDENT CONTEST.
ARE YOU UP FOR IT?
Mr. Cholasta says, I CAN DO THAT.
[Upbeat music plays, laughter, chatter, knocking]
Lexie knocks on a door.
Lisa says, HI.
Lexie says, HI MR MADSEN, CAN YOU HELP US...
Text reads, “Mr. Madsen. Custodian.”
Lisa narrates, WE WENT AROUND
THE SCHOOL TO ASK THE STAFF
TO JOIN THE PROGRAM AND WE
CHALLENGED THEM TO SEE WHO
COULD SAVE THE MOST ELECTRICITY
BY TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS.
Mr. Madsen says, YES, ABSOLUTELY.
I CAN DO THAT.
[Upbeat music plays, knocking]
A woman with long blonde hair pulled into a ponytail opens a door. Text beside her reads, “Ms. Wease. Teacher.”
Lexei asks, HI MS. WEASE CAN WE
HANG OUT WITH YOU IN THE
STAFF ROOM?
Ms. Wease says, I'M SORRY, IT'S STAFF ONLY.
[Background chatter]
Lisa narrates, THE CREW DIDN'T
GET THAT REQUEST ACCEPTED,
BUT, MS WEASE COULDN’T
SAY NO TO JOINING THE EFFORT,
AND SHE AGREED TO THE CHALLENGE.
Gracen says, AND THERE’S ALSO A CONTEST.
IT'S US AGAINST THE TEACHERS. ARE YOU IN?
Ms. Wease says, WE'RE IN.
Mr. Cholasta asks, Lisa, HEY, ARE YOU NEW HERE?
[Upbeat music plays, laughter, background chatter]
Kyle and Sigfried stand in a hallway. Lisa, Hijab, Ocean, Lexie and Gracen run past them.
Sigfried asks, HEY, WHAT ARE YOU UP TO?
[Giggling]
Lisa says, WE WERE JUST SPREADING
ELI'S MESSAGE AROUND SCHOOL.
Sigfried says, OKAY, WELL, I HEARD THAT
NEXT, YOU WANT TO EXPAND
TO A NEIGHBORING SCHOOL, RIGHT?
Lexie says, YES, IT'S A HIGH SCHOOL.
Sigfried says BUT BEFORE WE GET
WALKING, LET'S WORK ON OUR TALKING.
Hijab says, I'M NERVOUS.
Gracen says, I'M NERVOUS TOO.
[Upbeat music plays]
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
Lisa narrates, RUNNING AROUND
SCHOOL WITH THE ELI CREW
USED UP A LOT OF OUR ENERGY,
BUT THE MESSAGE IS BEING SPREAD.
CUT DOWN ON ENERGY USE,
THE ELECTRIC KIND THAT IS.
[Click]
Lisa narrates, TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS
WHEN YOU DON'T NEED THEM
SAVES A LOT OF ELECTRICITY.
[Click]
Lisa narrates, BUT HEY, NOT NOW.
THANKS TO ADVANCES
IN TECHNOLOGY,
THERE ARE ALSO SUPER
EFFICIENT BULBS WE CAN USE.
ONE OF THEM IS CALLED
AN L.E.D. BULB.
IT STANDS FOR LIGHT
EMITTING DIODE.
Text beneath a bulb reads, “Light Emitting Diode.”
Lisa narrates, L.E.D. BULBS USE
WAY LESS ENERGY AND THEY
LAST AT LEAST FIFTEEN TIMES
LONGER THAN REGULAR BULBS.
[Popping, upbeat music continues]
Lisa narrates, REPLACING REGULAR
BULBS WITH L.E.D.’S IS ANOTHER
BRIGHT IDEA.
IT'S SHOCKINGLY EASY.
Text by a photograph of Lisa reads, “Bright,” “Shocking” and “Charge.”
Lisa narrates, YOU'LL GET A
CHARGE OUT OF IT.
I'LL SEE MYSELF OUT NOW IN.
Lisa, Kyle, Sigfried and the children play in the school gymnasium.
The electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
Text reads, “Green Squad.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Sigfried, Kyle, Hijab, Ocean, Lexie and Gracen sit in a school library.
Sigfried narrates, TO TRY TO PERSUADE
STUDENTS AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL
UP THE STREET TO SAVE ENERGY.
Sigfried asks, HOW ABOUT WE START
BRAINSTORMING SOME SLOGANS?
Sigfried narrates, WE DECIDED TO
COME UP WITH NEW SLOGANS
TO INSPIRE THEM TO TURN OFF
THEIR LIGHTS.
Lexie says, WHAT ABOUT LIKE, DON'T
BE A FOOL, SAVE FOSSIL FUEL?
Text beside her reads, “Don’t be a fool. Save fossil fuel.”
Sigfried asks, ANY OTHER IDEAS?
Ocean suggests, TURN OFF THE
LIGHTS TO MAKE THE FUTURE BRIGHTER!
Text reads, “Turn off the lights to make the future brighter!”
Sigfried says, I LOVE THE LIGHT PUNS. OKAY.
ANYONE ELSE? GRACEN?
Gracen says, NO EXCUSE FOR ENERGY MISUSE!
Text reads, “No excuse for energy misuse!”
Sigfried says, I LIKE IT. I LIKE IT.
Ocean says, BE COOL. SAVE FUEL.
Text reads, “Be cool. Save fuel.”
Kyle says, THAT'S MY FAVORITE, ACTUALLY.
Sigfried says, I REALLY LIKE
TURN OFF THE LIGHTS
TO MAKE THE FUTURE BRIGHT.
Kyle says, I WAS GOING TO WRITE
DOWN ‘IF IT'S NOT IN USE,
TURN OFF THE JUICE.’
BUT WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?
A voice says, YEAH.
[Upbeat music plays]
Sigfried says, TO TALK TO HIGH SCHOOLERS,
I THINK ALL WE REALLY NEED
TO CHANGE ABOUT OUR LANGUAGE
IS THAT...
Sigfried narrates, AND THEN WE CAME
UP WITH IDEAS FOR THE PRESENTATION.
HOW DO YOU TALK TO OLDER KIDS
WHO YOU DON'T KNOW?
AND HOW DO YOU MAKE IT FUN?
Kyle says, WHEN YOU TALK
WITH OLDER KIDS IN GENERAL,
YOU'RE TELLING THEM
WHAT'S IMPORTANT TO YOU.
AND A LOT OF THE TIME PEOPLE
LISTEN TO THAT, YOU KNOW?
SO I THINK IF YOU JUST GO AND
YOU TALK TO THEM LIKE A FRIEND
AND YOU DON'T TALK UP TO THEM,
YOU DON'T TALK DOWN TO THEM,
JUST TELL THEM THIS IS IMPORTANT.
I THINK NO MATTER WHAT
THEY’LL LISTEN.
Sigfried says, WE SHOULD DO
SOME LIKE INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS,
LIKE POSE QUESTIONS
TO THE AUDIENCE
SO THAT THEY HAVE A CHANCE
TO SORT OF INTERACT WITH YOU.
Kyle says, SO I THINK YOU GUYS
HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB
WORKING ON THE MESSAGING
WITH SIG HERE.
BUT NOW I THINK WE NEED
TO MAKE SURE
THAT THE PRESENTATION
IS CLEAR AND FUN.
SO I THINK THAT WE NEED TO DO
A DRY RUN BEFORE WE GO OVER
JUST TO PRACTICE THINGS
AND MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE
ALL ON THE SAME PAGE
ABOUT THE PRESENTATION.
WHAT YOU GUYS SAY?
The children say, YES. YEAH.
Text reads, “Yep.” “Yes.” “Yup.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle stands at the bottom of a short staircase. Sigfried sits on the top step at the side. Gracen, Lexie, Hijab and Ocean stand on a platform at the top of the stairs.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle says, ALL RIGHT, EVERYBODY.
SO FIRST THING I WANT YOU GUYS
TO DO IS TELL ME YOUR NAME.
Gracen says, I’M GRACEN..
Kyle says, I CAN'T HEAR YOU GRACEN.
[Laughing]
Gracen says, I’M GRACEN.
Kyle asks, WHO?
Gracen shouts, I’M GRACEN!
Kyle says, GRACEN, NICE TO MEET YOU.
[Laughing]
Lexie says, I'M LEXIE.
Kyle says, PERFECT.
Hijab says, I’M HIJAB.
Kyle says, LITTLE LOUDER FOR ME.
Hijab says, I’M HIJAB.
Kyle says, I’M WHO!?
[Laughter]
Hijab says, I’M HIJAB.
Kyle says, PERFECT. AND...
Ocean says, I’M OCEAN.
Kyle says, I CAN HEAR YOU GUYS
LOUD AND CLEAR.
THAT IS A FANTASTIC START.
SO THE MOST IMPORTANT THING
IS THAT WHEN YOU'RE
IN THIS BIG OF A SPACE, IT'S
TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE CAN HEAR
YOU BECAUSE YOU CAN SAY
THE BEST THINGS IN THE WORLD,
BUT NOBODY'S HEARING YOU....
UNFORTUNATELY, WE'RE NOT GOING
TO GET THE MESSAGE ACROSS.
SO THEN I HEARD
WE HAVE AN INTRODUCTION....
A voice says, MAYBE?
Kyle says, TAKE IT AWAY.
Gracen says, HELLO, THE NAME OF THE CLASS,
WE ARE HERE TO EXPLAIN
ELI THE EEL.
Ocean says, I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU.
DO YOU KNOW ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING?
SIT DOWN IF YOU DON’T.
STAND UP IF YOU DO.
Gracen says, I ALSO HAVE A QUESTION.
DO YOU THINK LIGHTS
ANYTHING TO DO WITH
CLIMATE CHANGE?
Sigfried says, THAT WAS SUPPOSED
TO BE THE FIRST ONE.
Sigfried says, THEY'RE NUMBERED
FOR A REASON.
Gracen says, YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO GO.....
I MEAN, YOU TOOK IT FROM ME.
Gracen says, HELLO, CLASS NAME.,.
WE ARE HERE TO EXPLAIN
ELI THE EEL.
[Frustrated sputtering, background arguing]
Kyle narrates, YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY.
THE WORSE THE DRESS REHEARSAL,
THE BETTER THE PERFORMANCE.
SO THINGS ARE DEFINITELY LOOKING
GOOD FOR THE ELI CREW.
Kyle asks, DO YOU GUYS FEEL
READY RIGHT NOW?
Question marks appear over Gracen and Ocean’s heads. Text over Lexie’s head reads, “No!” Text over Hijab’s head reads, “Yes!”
Kyle says, I THINK WE SHOULD DO
ANOTHER COUPLE OF REHEARSALS.
WHAT DO YOU GUYS SAY?
The children say, YEAH. YUP.
Text over all the children’s heads reads, “Yup!”
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Sigfried narrates, WE CAME UP
WITH SOME ZAPPY SLOGANS,
BUT MEANWHILE, I FOUND
SOME GHOSTS IN THE SCHOOL.
[Spooky oohing]
Sigfried narrates, OKAY...
NOT GHOSTS, BECAUSE THEY'RE
NOT REAL.
BUT WHAT IS REAL IS
GHOST ELETRICITY.
WE CAN'T SEE IT.
BUT GHOST ELECTRICITY IS THE POWER
THAT OUR APPLIANCES AND DEVICES
WASTE WHEN THEY'RE PLUGGED IN
BUT AREN'T BEING USED.
ABOUT THREE QUARTERS
OF THE POWER THEY EAT UP IS USED
WHEN THEY'RE NOT EVEN TURNED ON.
Lines on a power cord show animated ghosts moving past “one quarter” and “one half.” The ghosts stop at “three-quarters.”
[Spooky oohing]
Sigfried narrates, THAT'S A HUGE WASTE
THAT HAS A BIG IMPACT
ON THE ENVIRONMENT.
[Upbeat music plays, clicking]
Sigfried narrates, BUT YOU CAN BE
A GHOST HUNTER.
TRY PLUGGING INTO A POWER STRIP.
THEN YOU CAN TURN EVERYTHING OFF
WITH ONE FLICK.
SOME EVEN HAVE TIMERS
YOU CAN SAY OR JUST UNPLUG
THE THINGS YOU AREN T USING
GHOST ELECTRICITY AT ZERO,
YOU'RE MY HERO.
THAT'S ANOTHER ELECTRIFYING
SLOGAN FOR THE ELI CREW.
Text reads, “Ghost electricity at zero? You’re my hero!”
Lisa, Kyle, Sigfried, Hijab, Ocean, Lexie and Gracen hop down a school hallway.
The electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
Text reads, “Green Squad.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Lexie narrates, IT'S A BIT NERVE WRACKING
TALKING TO OLDER KIDS.
Mr. Lumsden, Kyle, Sigfried, Gracen, Ocean, Hijab and Lexie walk on a sidewalk towards a large school.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle narrates, AFTER LOTS OF WORK
REHEARSING. TEAM ELI IS READY
TO FACE A BRAND NEW AUDIENCE.
BUT WILL THEY EVEN LISTEN?
Kyle asks, WE’RE JUST A FEW MINUTES
FROM THE PRESENTATION.
HOW ARE YOU GUYS FEELING?
Lexie, Hijab, Gracen and Ocean say, NERVOUS.
[Background chatter]
Kyle says, WE HAVE NOTHING
TO BE NERVOUS ABOUT.
YOU'VE GOT A GREAT MESSAGE
AND YOU PRACTICED A WHOLE LOT.
SO I BELIEVE IN YOU GUYS,
AND I'LL BE FRONT ROW
WATCHING THE WHOLE TIME.
Ocean says, AND A LITTLE CHEER SQUAD.
[Background cheering]
Lexie says, YOU'RE OUR BIGGEST FANS.
Sigfried says, AS LONG AS YOU GUYS
HAVE CONFIDENCE IN YOURSELVES,
IT'S GOING TO COME ACROSS GREAT,
READY? HANDS IN.
Kyle says, ON THREE, ELI.
ONE, TWO, THREE. ELI
[Upbeat music plays]
A teacher announces,
WE HAVE OUR FRIENDS
FROM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
DOWN THE ROAD THAT ARE HERE
TODAY TO GIVE US A REALLY EXCITING
PRESENTATION. THEY ARE ENERGY
ENTHUSIASTS, AND WE'RE GOING
TO GIVE THEM A REALLY WARM
WELCOME TODAY.
Students in a cafeteria applaud.
[Applause, cheering]
Kyle announces, THE ELI THE EEL SQUAD!
Text reads, “The Eli the Eel Squad!
Gracen, Ocean, Lexie and Hijab stand on a table.
Gracen says, HI, I'M GRACEN.
Lexie says, HI, I'M LEXIE.
Hijab says, HI, I'M HIJAB.
Ocean says, HI, I'M OCEAN.
AND THIS IS ELI.
Gracen says, FIRST QUESTION,
DO YOU THINK LIGHTS
HAVE ANYTHING TO DO
WITH CLIMATE CHANGE?
STAND UP, YES. SIT DOWN, NO.
The students stand up.
Gracen says, YES IS THE ANSWER.
YOU CAN SIT DOWN NOW.
Lexie says, SECOND QUESTION.
YOU AS MIDDLE SCHOOLERS
CAN MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE
ON THE ENVIRONMENT.
STAND UP FOR YES.
SIT DOWN FOR NO.
The students stand up.
Lexie says, THE ANSWER IS YES,
BECAUSE IF ONE PERSON
CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE,
THAT MEANS A BUNCH OF MIDDLE
SCHOOLERS CAN MAKE A BIGGER
DIFFERENCE TO SAVE OUR PLANET.
YOU GUYS CAN SIT DOWN NOW.
Hijab says, THIRD QUESTION.
DOES ELECTRICITY HAVE ANYTHING
TO DO WITH FOSSIL FUELS?
STAND FOR YES.
SIT DOWN FOR NO.
The students stand up.
[Sneakers squeak]
Hijab says, THE ANSWER IS YES,
BECAUSE MOST ELECTRICITY,
IT COMES FROM FOSSIL FUELS.
Ocean says, FOURTH QUESTION.
DO YOU GUYS KNOW
ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING?
STAND UP FOR YES.
SIT DOWN FOR NO.
The students stand up.
Ocean says, YOU GUYS CAN SIT DOWN NOW.
Gracen says, WE WANT YOU TO JOIN
THE MOVEMENT.
Lexie says, WE HAVE BEEN
TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS
BECAUSE WE WANT TO SAVE ENERGY.
WE WANT TO STOP CLIMATE CHANGE
AND FOSSIL FUELS ARE BAD.
Hijab says, YOU SHOULD CARE BECAUSE
CLIMATE CHANGE AFFECTS ALL OF US.
WE CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE.
COLLECTIVE ACTION IS IMPORTANT.
Lexie says, WE HAVE MADE OUR OWN
ELI THE EEL STARTER KITS,
AND WE HAVE MADE POSTERS
TO PUT UP UNDER YOUR LIGHT
SWITCH TO REMIND YOU.
[Light switches click]
Lexie says, AND WE HAVE ALSO MADE
SOME CUBES WITH THE EIL HEAD ON IT.
TO KNOW HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY
WE HAVE BEEN WASTING.
Gracen says, THIS IS OUR WAY OF DOING
AN ELI STARTER KIT.
WELL, YOU GUYS CAN DO IT
YOUR WAY.
Lexie says, RAISE YOUR HAND
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.
[Upbeat music plays]
A student asks, HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY
IN CANADA DO WE WASTE EVERY DAY?
A second student asks, HOW MUCH LIKE ELECTRICITY
DO WE HAVE TO SAVE IN ORDER TO
POTENTIALLY STOP CLIMATE CHANGE?
A third student asks, HOW LONG WOULD IT
TAKE FOR, LIKE, CLIMATE CHANGE TO STOP?
A fourth student asks, HOW MUCH PERMANENT
DAMAGE HAVE WE DONE TO OUR PLANET?
A fifth student asks WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN
IF WE DON'T TAKE ACTION NOW?
A sixth student asks WILL THIS ACTUALLY
MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Lexie says, IT DOES SEEM SMALL,
BUT IF WE ALL WORK TOGETHER,
IT WILL ALL ADD UP.
Ocean says, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING.
WE WERE VERY NERVOUS.
[Applause]
A seventh student says, I THOUGHT
THE PRESENTATION WAS REALLY GOOD.
IT'S INSPIRING.
An eighth student says, I NEVER REALLY
REALIZED HOW MUCH WE WERE DAMAGING
OUR PLANET WITH ELECTRICITY.
I THOUGHT THEY HAD APRETTY
IMPORTANT MESSAGE BEHIND THEIR
PRESENTATION.
I THOUGHT IT WAS PRETTY
MEANINGFUL AND IMPORTANT.
A tenth student says, I NEVER KNEW
ANY OF THIS STUFF, AND I'M GOING
TO TELL A LOT MORE PEOPLE
TO STOP USING ELECTRICITY
AND HELP CLIMATE CHANGE.
An eleventh student says, THE
PRESENTATION MADE ME THINK
OF OTHER KINDS OF THINGS,
NOT JUST TURNING OFF
LIGHT SWITCHES.
A twelfth student says, I THINK THEY ACTUALLY DID
A GREAT JOB, CONSIDERING THEY
WOULD HAVE BEEN REALLY NERVOUS.
‘CAUSE A BUNCH OF OLDER KIDS
WERE SITTING THERE LISTENING,
WATCHING THEIR EVERY MOVE AND
LISTENING TO THEIR EVERY WORD.
I THINK THEY DID GREAT.
A thirteenth student says, I THINK
SOMEBODY OR US WILL START LIKE
START A CLUB OR WHATEVER TO LIKE,
START THE MOVEMENT OF IT,
AND THEN IT'LL PROBABLY
SPREAD ACROSS THE SCHOOL.
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle narrates, THE ELI CREW NAILED THE
PRESENTATION AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.
LIKE THEM SCHOOL KIDS ALL OVER
THE WORLD ARE TAKING ACTION
AND MAKING THEIR VOICES
HEARD ON AN EPIC SCALE.
SCHOOL CLIMATE STRIKE PROTESTS
BEGAN IN TWENTY-EIGHTEEN
TO DEMAND ACTION ON CLIMATE
CHANGE AND HAS GROWN INTO
AN INTERNATIONAL MOVEMENT
WITH MILLIONS OF KIDS AND ADULTS
JOINING IT.
THEY RAISE TONS OF AWARENESS
AND PUT PRESSURE ON GOVERNMENTS
ABOUT THINGS LIKE REDUCING FOSSIL
FUELS NO MATTER WHAT YOUR AGES,
YOU CAN BE AN INFLUENCER
BY SPREADING THE MESSAGE
YOUR SCHOOL, FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE YOU FEEL
ELECTRIFYING BUZZ LIKE ELI
THE ELECTRIC EEL.
[Electricity crackles]
The electronic voice says, GREEN SQUAD.
[Upbeat music plays]
Outside on a grassy field, Lexie, Gracen, Ocean and Hijab face Sigfried and Kyle.
Kyle says, CONGRATULATIONS
ON THE PRESENTATION.
I THINK YOU GUYS DID A WONDERFUL
JOB AND YOU GOT YOUR MESSAGE.
OUT SUPER CLEAR.
Sigfried asks, SO HOW DO YOU FEEL
THE PRESENTATION WENT?
Lexie says, I THINK IT WAS PRETTY WELL.
Gracen says, I THINK IT WENT OKAY.
Sigfried asks, YOU THINK YOUR MESSAGE
CAME ACROSS WELL?
The children say, YEAH. YEAH. YES,
Sigfried says, IT WAS FANTASTIC.
I THINK IT REALLY CAME
ACROSS THE PASSION
THAT YOU GUYS HAVE
AS WELL AS THE KNOWLEDGE.
AND I THINK YOU REALLY HAVE
A SPARK AND I'M EXCITED
TO SEE WHAT YOU DO WITH THAT
IN THE FUTURE BECAUSE IF YOU
CAN MAKE A CHANGE WITH ONE SCHOOL,
IMAGINE WHAT YOU MIGHT BE ABLE
TO DO LATER ON.
[Upbeat music plays]
Lexie says, THANKS FOR HELPING US
WITH ALL OF OUR ELI THE EEL STAR
KITS AND HELPING US BUILD UP
THAT CONFIDENCE.
Kyle says, THE REAL QUESTION IS
WHEN'S THE NEXT PRESENTATION?
WHERE'S THE NEXT SCHOOL, RIGHT?
Lexie says, THAT S A GOOD QUESTION.
Sigfried asks, DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL
LIKE YOU SORT OF WANT TO START
DOING MORE?
Hijab, Lexie, Ocean and Gracen say, YEAH.
Kyle says, I'M SO EXCITED TO CHECK
BACK IN WITH YOU GUYS AND SEE
HOW MUCH ENERGY YOU HAVEN'T
USED IN OUR CHECK IN.
GATHER UP.
The group hugs.
Everyone says, BYE!
[Gentle music plays]
Later, Kyle and Sigfried walk down the school hallway.
Sigfried says, WOW, WHAT A
FANTASTIC DAY.
[Click]
Kyle says, OH, I GUESS I
SHOULD TURN THE LIGHTS OFF.
Kyle turns off lights in the school.
[Click]
The Green Squad makes a human pyramid with Sigfried, Eric and Kyle on the bottom row and Lisa and Skakira on the top.
Text reads, “Squad Tip.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle stands behind a table. He holds a disposable plastic water bottle in his hand. There is a reusable water bottle on the table in front of him.
Kyle says, YOU KNOW THAT
ADULTS CAN BE REALLY BUSY
SOMETIMES. LIKE, SOMETIMES EVEN
TOO BUSY TO CARE ABOUT PLANET EARTH.
DOES THAT MAKE YOU MAD?
THAT REALLY MAKES ME MAD.
Kyle squeezes the plastic bottle.
[Cracking]
He says, GROWING UP, I WAS ON A FILM
SET WITH A BUNCH OF ADULTS.
SEE THE ACTORS AND CREW
WERE STILL USING THESE
THROWAWAY PLASTIC BOTTLES
AND WE WANTED TO SWITCH TO THESE
REUSABLE WATER BOTTLES ON SET.
PROBLEM WAS THAT WE WERE YOUNG
AND TELLING ALL THESE GROWN UPS
WITH THESE BIG, IMPORTANT JOBS
AND SEEMED SUPER BUSY WAS
REALLY TOUGH.
BUT YOU CAN'T MAKE A CHANGE
BY NOT SAYING ANYTHING.
SO FINALLY I ASKED MY MOM AND
SHE TOLD ME TO JUST TELL THEM.
SOMETIMES THE ADULTS
DON'T REALIZE THAT THINGS AREN'T
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
AND SOMETIMES IT CAN BE
JUST TOO BUSY TO NOTICE.
SO WE SPOKE UP AND
THEY FINALLY MADE THE SWITCH.
SO DON'T BE AFRAID TO TALK TO
ADULTS AND MAKE A CHANGE.
The Green Squad poses. Text reads, “Check-In.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle, Shakira, Lisa, Eric and Sigfried sit around a small table with a laptop computer on it.
Lisa says, LET'S CHECK IN WITH TEAM ELI.
Lexie, Gracen and Hijab appear on the computer screen.
They says, HI, LISA.
Lexie says, IT WAS REALLY FUN
TO HANG OUT WITH YOU.
YOUR MATH SKILLS ARE AMAZING.
[Chuckling]
Lexie says, EVERY FRIDAY WE GO INTO
CLASSROOMS WITH THIS CLIPBOARD
AND SEE HOW MANY BLOCKS
THEY HAVE TO REPRESENT
ONE KILOWATT AN HOUR.
Mr. Lumsden asks, ARE WE SAVING
MORE ENERGY THAN WE EVEN EXPECTED?
A voice says, YES, A LOT.
Lisa says, WOW.
Gracen says, WE WERE HAPPY THAT
IT WAS GOING AROUND SO WELL
AND THAT WE WERE SAVING
A LOT OF ENERGY.
Hijab says, LAST WEEK, IN TOTAL,
WE HAD TWO HUNDRED AND FOUR
CUBES WE SAVED BY ALL THE CLASSES.
Mr. Lumsden asks, WAS OUR CLASSROOM THE BEST?
A voice says, NO.
[Mr. Lumsden laughs]
Eric says, SOMETIMES IT'S LIKE THAT.
Gracen and Ocean fill the bottom of a tank with cubes.
Mr. Lumsden asks, WHAT ARE
YOU FOLKS UP TO, THERE?
[Cubes rattle]
Gracen says, MAKING ELI A HOME.
Mr. Lumsden asks, ARE YOU MAKING
HIM A MESS OR A HOME?
[Laughing]
Ocean, Gracen and Lexie stand in front of a window. Behind the window, the Eli the eel stuffy lies in the tank.
They say, ELI IN HIS NEW HOME FOR
THE WHOLE SCHOOL TO SEE.
Mr. Lumsden says, THE CLASS HAS
ACTUALLY ADAPTED THE ELI KITS
AND THIS WAS ACTUALLY
THE COOLEST PART THAT I SAW,
WHEN THE STUDENTS HAD THE
CHANCE TO SHOW HOW THEY COULD
SAVE ENERGY AND SEE THEIR
TANGIBLE GROWTH.
IT REALLY TOOK OFF.
THEY STARTED LOOKING FOR DIFFERENT
WAYS THAT THEY COULD SAVE
EXTRA ENERGY AND MAKE THEIR ELI
GROW QUICKER.
Lisa says, THE AMOUNT OF CUBES
WAS ASTRONOMICAL AND THAT’S SO
MANY KILOWATT HOURS OF ENERGY
FROM SO MANY CLASSES.
I THINK THEY SAID AT ONE POINT
THEY HAD TWO HUNDRED AND FOUR
AND IT'S SO MUCH ELECTRICITY.
Sigfried says, IT'S REALLY IMPACTFUL,
LIKE VISUALLY SEEING HOW MUCH
THEY'VE SAVED.
Shakira says, YEAH, I LOVED
THE LITTLE CASE THAT THEY MADE
WITH THE ELI AND ALL THE CUBES.
AND IT GETS THE WHOLE SCHOOL
MORE EXCITED TO PARTICIPATE
AS WELL.
Lisa says, YEAH, COMPETITION
ALWAYS GETS PEOPLE.
Shakira says, YES.
Eric says, I THINK BY HAVING
THESE INITIATIVES IN SCHOOLS,
SOMETIMES YOU CAN HAVE A
LIGHT BULB MOMENT.
[Laughter]
Lexie says, IT WAS FUN
GOING INTO ALL THE PLACES THAT
ADULTS GO IN.
Mr. Lumsden says, I THINK THE TEACHERS,
ALTHOUGH DOING WELL, LAGGED
A LITTLE BEHIND THE STUDENTS,
IRONICALLY ENOUGH, IN THIS CASE,
ALL THE TEACHERS I NOTICED BOUGHT
IN AND EMBRACED THE PROJECT.
BUT IT WAS FUNNY TO SEE THAT
THIS WAS REALLY STUDENT DRIVEN.
Shakira says, I REALLY LOVE THAT
HOW HE SAID IT WAS A STUDENT
DRIVEN INITIATIVE. THAT JUST
SHOWS THAT THEY'RE TAKING
RESPONSIBILITY AND THAT
THEY'RE DOING THIS THEMSELVES
AND THEY'RE BEATING
THE TEACHERS IS PRETTY GREAT.
SO THE TEACHERS,
THEY GOTTA STEP UP.
Eric says, SO REFRESHING TO SEE
STUDENTS BEAT TEACHERS.
Shakira and Sigfried say, YES.
Mr. Lumsden says, I WAS SUPER PROUD
OF WHAT THE KIDS DID AT THE
HIGH SCHOOL.
IT'S TOUGH FOR ANY GRADE SIX
TO SPEAK IN FRONT OF THEIR CLASS,
BUT TO GO TO A DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENT
AND DIFFERENT SCHOOL AND SPEAK
TO OLDER KIDS.
AND I WAS HAPPY HOW THOSE GUYS
PRESENTED THEMSELVES.
I THINK THEY DID AN AWESOME JOB.
Lexie says, WE WERE A BIT NERVOUS
AND ONCE WE DID THE PRESENTATION
IT WAS LIKE, BOOM, DONE.
Sigfried says, IT WAS INCREDIBLE
WORKING WITH TEAM ELI
WHEN THEY ACTUALLY DID
THE PRESENTATION,
THEY WERE A LITTLE BIT
APPREHENSIVE AT FIRST
AND KIND OF NERVOUS, RIGHTLY SO,
BUT THEY DID REALLY, REALLY WELL.
Lexie says, HE SAID THAT WE DID
A GOOD JOB.
[Green squad applauds, upbeat music continues]
Lisa says, YEAH.
Mr. Lumsden says, I HAVEN'T HEARD
ANY UPDATES ABOUT HOW THE HIGH
SCHOOL DID.
I'D BE CURIOUS TO SEE.
I KNOW THEY WOULD HAVE
A TOUGH TASK AHEAD OF THEM.
Kyle says, YOU CAN'T FORCE
SOMEONE TO CHANGE,
BUT YOU CAN INSPIRE PEOPLE
JUST LIKE THE ELI
CREW DID AT THEIR SCHOOL.
THEY'VE CREATED A PROGRAM
THAT IS DEFINITELY GOING
TO HAVE AN IMPACT ON THAT
SCHOOL FOR YEARS TO COME.
Sigfried says, I THINK WE REALLY
MADE AN IMPACT WHEN THEY WENT
TO THE HIGH SCHOOL AND EVEN
IF THE HIGH SCHOOL ISN’T KEEPING
UP AS WELL AS THEY ARE.
AT LEAST WE SORT OF GAVE
THAT INFORMATION TO THEM.
AND IT REALLY MADE
AN IMPACT ON TEAM ELI
BECAUSE THEY SORT OF FEEL MORE
CONFIDENT NOW TO TAKE INITIATIVE
AND DO THOSE SORTS OF THINGS
BY THEMSELVES.
Kyle says, TEAM ELI
YOU GUYS WERE ELECTRIFYING.
The Green Squad cheers, GO, TEAM, GO!
End credits roll.
[Upbeat music plays]
A child says, WHEE!
Colourful text reads, “tvo kids.”
[Child giggles]
A blue eye peers out of the Apartment Eleven Productions logo. Text beneath it reads, “Apartment Eleven Productions.”
[Squeaking]
Colourful text reads, “tvo kids” plus “Apartment Eleven Productions,” “Original.” A purple circle with a ring attached to each side appears over “Apartment Eleven.”
[Child giggles]
Kyle, Lisa and Sigfried sit side by side.
[Upbeat music plays]
Lisa says, IN A CARTOON,
WHEN SOMEONE HAS AN IDEA,
A LIGHT BULB
POPS UP ABOVE THEIR HEAD.
Sigfried says, A CLASSIC CARTOON STYLE.
Kyle says, WELL,
THE KIDS WE'RE ABOUT TO MEET
TODAY HAVE SOME GREAT IDEAS
TO CONSERVE ENERGY
BY TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS.
Lisa says, BRIGHT IDEA.
An animated light bulb appears above Lisa’s head.
[Ding]
Lisa says, LET'S MEET THEM FACE TO FACE.
Kyle says, MIGHT WANT TO TURN
THAT OFF FIRST.
[Lisa snaps fingers]
Lisa says, THANKS, KYLE.
[Upbeat music plays]
The Green Squad smiles. Yellow and red text reads, “Eric.” To the right of the text, Eric holds a reusable shopping bag and smiles. His chin-length black hair is straight and he wears a black t-shirt and brown overalls.
Red and orange text reads, “Lisa.” To the left of the text, Lisa wears her brown hair in small braids. She wears a dark red blouse with white flecks with light blue jeans.
Purple and blue text reads, “Sigfried.” To the right of the text, Sigfried wears a black beret over his pale curly blond hair. He wears a red long-sleeve shirt.
Green and blue text reads, “Shakira.” To the left of the text, a girl with long black hair turns. She wears a black sweater and ripped blue jeans. A pink floral scarf is knotted around her neck.
Dark and light blue text reads, “Kyle.” To the right of the text, Kyle wears a red backpack. His dark brown hair reaches beneath his ears.
White text reads, “TVOKIDS presents.” Below that, green text with dark green dots reads, “Green.” Below that, pink text reads, “Squad.” The Green Squad poses beneath the text.
Electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
In a classroom, a slender girl stands behind a large wooden desk. She wears a blue t-shirt and her blond dark brown hair is pulled back into a ponytail.
[Upbeat music plays]
The girl with the ponytail says, HI, I'M HIJAB.
Purple text reads, “Hijab.”
A girl who wears the same t-shirt as Hijab sits on the desk. Her brown hair is in small braids.
The girl with the braids says, HI, I’M OCEAN.
Blue text reads, “Ocean.
A tall girl with medium-length light brown hair stands beside Ocean. She also wears the blue t-shirt.
The girl with light brown hair says, HI I’M LEXIE.
Pink text reads, “Lexie.”
A boy with short auburn hair and black-framed eyeglasses leans against the desk in front of Hijab.
The auburn-haired boy says, HI I'M GRACEN.
Green text reads, “Gracen.”
A man sits behind the desk. He has short brown hair and wears a grey dress shirt.
The man says, HI. I'M THEIR TEACHER,
MR. LUMSDEN.
Yellow text reads, “Mr. Lumsden.”
A green striped eel stuffy lands on Mr. Lumsden’s desk.
Green text reads, “Eli the Eel.”
[Slide whistle]
Everyone says, AND THIS IS ELI
THE ELECTRIC EEL.
Animated sparks fly off Eli.
[Crackling, upbeat music continues]
Lexie says, WE ARE STUDENTS IN GRADE
SIX, AND OUR MISSION IS TO SAVE
ENERGY AROUND OUR SCHOOL.
Gracen says, WE PICKED
ELECTRIC EELS AS OUR MASCOT
BECAUSE THEY GENERATE OVER
SIX HUNDRED AND FIFTY VOLTS
OF ELECTRICITY.
Ocean says, ELI IS AN ELECTRIC EEL
WHO SAVES ELECTRICITY AND SAVES
MONEY, TOO.
Animated sparks fly off Eli.
[Crackling, upbeat music continues]
Lexie says, IT'S IMPORTANT
TO TURN OFF THE LIGHTS
WHEN YOU'RE NOT USING THEM.
IT'S JUST PUTTING FOSSIL FUELS
AND CARBON DIOXIDE UP IN THE AIR,
AND THAT GOES UP TO OUR EARTH.
Gracen says, FOR CLIMATE CHANGE
AND GLOBAL WARMING. SO WE
THOUGHT WE CAN TAKE ACTION.
Ocean, Gracen, Hijab and Lexie stand in front of a class of seated students.
Ocean says, THIS IS ELI.
Gracen narrates, ME AND THE CREW
WENT AROUND TO ALL THE CLASSROOMS
TELLING THEM HOW ELI WORKED
AND HOW YOU SHOULD
TURN OFF YOUR LIGHTS.
In the classroom, a girl asks, CAN WEKEEP THE LIGHTS ON
WHEN WE ARE IN CLASS?
Gracen replies, YES, YOU CAN.
BUT AS LONG AS YOU LEAVE
THE ROOM. YES.
REMIND YOUR TEACHER
TO TURN OFF THE LIGHTS.
Lexie says, WE LET THE TEACHERS PICK OUT
POSTERS AND PUT THEM UNDER THE
LIGHT SWITCH OR ON THEIR DOOR.
SO IF THEY WERE LEAVING
THE ROOM, THEY WILL REMEMBER.
[Door creaks]
Mr. Lumsden says, AS TEACHERS
WE’RE ONE OF THE WORST CULPRITS.
WE THINK IT'S AWESOME
WHEN WE GET CAUGHT.
Mr. Lumsden pushes down a light switch.
[Click]
Hijab says, THE MORE PEOPLE ARE DOING IT,
THE BETTER.
Gracen says, IT SEEMS LIKE IT'S WORKING NOW.
Ocean says, I WOULD LIKE TO GET MORE PEOPLE
TO HELP US.
Gracen says, THERE IS A HIGH SCHOOL
WHERE THERE'S BIGGER KIDS
AND WE'RE HOPING WE CAN PROBABLY
GET THEM INVOLVED.
Lexie says, WE REALLY NEED SOME HELP
TO TRY AND MAKE THIS BIGGER, BETTER
AND REALLY SAVE OUR ENVIRONMENT.
HELP US SQUAD.
Text beside Lexie reads, “Help us squad!”
Kyle, Lisa and Sigfried walk on the side of a road.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle says, ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
YOU KNOW, I REALLY MISS GRADE SCHOOL.
Text reads, “Green Squad Yearbook.” Animated pages flip in a book and reveal a photograph of young Lisa posing beside a plate of baked goods. Text over her photograph reads, “Jr. Baking Champ Lisa.”
Lisa says, I LOVED ANYTHING
TO DO WITH MATH AND MEASUREMENT,
WHICH IS PROBABLY WHY
I LOVE COOKING SO MUCH NOW.
Kyle says, I LOVED MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE.
A photograph of young Kyle shows him holding a microphone. Text to the left of his photograph reads, “Rock On! Kyle.”
Kyle says, I GOT TO SAY, I DON'T THINK
I'VE CHANGED A BIT.
A photograph of young Eli shows him standing in front of a microphone. Text over the photograph reads, “Change Maker. Sigfried.”
Sigfried says, I WAS REALLY INTO
ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISM
AND COMING UP WITH SMART
MESSAGES TO HELP SOLVE
CLIMATE CHANGE.
THE ELI THE EEL GROUP
ARE MY KIND OF PEOPLE.
Kyle, Sigfried and Lisa enter the school. Text beside them reads, “Hey hey hey.” Hijab, Ocean, Lexie, Gracen and Mr. Lumsden wait for them in a hallway. Text beside them reads, “Hi.” “Hi.” “Hi.”
Everyone says, HI.
Lisa says, THANKS FOR HAVING US.
IT’S VERY NICE SCHOOL.
AND ELI IS SO CUTE.
Ocean passes Eli to Lisa.
Lisa says, THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Lisa puts Eli around her neck and pretends to be shocked. Animated sparks surround her.
[Crackling, giggling]
Lisa says, SO WE REALLY ADMIRE ALL
THE WORK THAT YOU'VE BEEN DOING SO FAR.
BUT I HAVE SOME IDEAS
ON HOW WE CAN, YOU KNOW,
TAKE IT UP A NOTCH
AND REALLY SHOW KIDS
THE IMPORTANCE OF POWERING DOWN.
AND WE'LL CALL IT THE ELI
THE EEL STARTER KIT.
Red and orange text reads, “Eli the Eel Starter Kit.”
Lisa says, BUT FIRST, I THINKWE NEED TO GET SOME FACTS.
COME ON, WE'RE LATE FOR CLASS.
[Bell rings, upbeat music continues]
Lisa, Kyle, Sigfried and the Eli the Eel group play floor hockey in a school gymnasium.
The electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
Text reads, “Green Squad.”
Mr. Lumsden opens a door and everyone follows him into a classroom.
[Click]
Lisa narrates, THE ELI CREW HAS BEEN
TALKING TO YOUNGER STUDENTS
AND LEAVING BEHIND COLORFUL
POSTERS AS A REMINDER
TO TURN OFF THE LIGHTS.
THIS YEAR, THEY WANT THEIR CAMPAIGN
TO MAKE AN EVEN BIGGER DIFFERENCE.
[Light switches clicking]
Lisa continues, SO WHY NOT SHOW PEOPLE
HOW MUCH ENERGY THEY'RE SAVING
AND MAKE A CONTEST OUT OF IT?
Lisa says, SO WE'VE BEEN TALKING
A LOT ABOUT SAVING ENERGY,
WHICH IS GREAT, BUT IT'S ALSO
IMPORTANT TO KEEP TRACK OF THAT
AND KNOW EXACTLY HOW MUCH ENERGY
WE'RE ACTUALLY SAVING.
[Upbeat music plays]
Text reads, “Thirty-six bulbs multiplied by thirty-two watts equals one point one five two Kilowatts per hour.” “One point one five two Kilowatts per hour rounded down equals one Kilowatt hour of energy saved!” “Off.”
[Clicking, ticking clock]
Lisa narrates, YOUR CLASSROOM HAS
THIRTY-SIX FLUORESCENT BULBS
THAT ARE THIRTY-TWO WATTS EACH.
WE WERE ABLE TO CALCULATE THAT
FOR EVERY HOUR THE LIGHTS ARE ON,
YOUR CLASSROOM USES ONE KILOWATT
HOUR OF ENERGY.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH
ONE KILOWATT HOUR OF ENERGY?
YOU COULD BLEND TWO HUNDRED SMOOTHIES
OR BLOW DRY TWENTY HEADS OF HAIR.
Numbers read, “two hundred” and “twenty.”
[Popping]
Lisa says, SO WE FINISHED UP
OUR CALCULATIONS AND WE'RE
ACTUALLY GOING TO USE LITTLE
CALCULATION CARDS AND WE'LL
PUT THOSE IN THE ELI THE EEL
STARTER KITS SO THAT ALL THE
OTHER CLASSES CAN KEEP TRACK
OF HOW MUCH ENERGY THEY'RE
SAVING AS WELL.
BUT FOR A MORE VISUAL AND KIND
OF CRAFTY REPRESENTATION,
WE ARE GOING TO USE
THIS ELI THE EEL ELECTRICITY
TRACKER IT'S VERY CUTE, RIGHT?
[Chuckling]
Mr. Lumsden says, CUTE, VERY CUTE.
Lisa says, VERY CUTE.
Lisa says, SO WE'RE
GOING TO MAKE SOME OF THESE
THAT WE CAN PUT THEM
IN THE STARTER KITS AND
THE CLASSES CAN ALSO KEEP TRACK.
WHY DON'T YOU GUYS START
CUTTING OUT FROM LIKE,
THE NECK UP OF ELI'S HEAD SLIP.
WE CAN MAKE A BUNCH
JUST LIKE THIS.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT
THESE ARE?
Blue text reads, “Cubes.”
Lexie says, CUBES.
[Upbeat music plays, tapping]
Lisa says, WE HAVE A COUPLE ALREADY
ON ELI HERE, BUT ESSENTIALLY,
EACH CLASS FOR EVERY KILOWATT
HOUR OF ELECTRICITY SAVED.
Text reads, “One cube equals one Kilowatt hour saved.”
Lisa says, THEY GET TO ADD A CUBE UNTIL
THEY HAVE JUST A GINORMOUS ELI
THE EEL MADE OUT OF CUBES, EACH
CLASS WILL GET ONE STARTER KIT.
SO YOU CAN GO INTO THEIR CLASS,
GIVE THEM A NICE PRESENTATION,
GIVE THEM THE STARTER KIT,
AND THEN SEE THE ELECTRICITY
THAT YOU'VE SAVED FROM THERE.
BUT I THINK THAT THERE'S
A WHOLE GROUP OF PEOPLE IN
THE SCHOOL WHO WE HAVEN'T
CHALLENGED YET.
ARE YOU GUYS
READY TO HAVE SOME FUN?
Blue and purple text reads, “Teacher Challenge.”
Mr. Lumsden, Hijab, Ocean, Lexie and Gracen say, YEAH!
The children run down a hallway behind Lisa. They peer around a corner.
[Locker doors bang, exciting music plays]
[Knocking on door]
A woman with long curly black hair says, COME IN.
Text beside an arrow pointing to the woman reads, “Ms. Cholasta. Principal.”
[Gentle music plays]
Lexie says, HI, MS. CHOLASTA.
WE ARE TRYING TO GET STAFF
TO JOIN OUR PROJECT.
ARE YOU UP FOR IT?
Mr. Cholasta says, OF COURSE.
AFTER ALL THE HARD WORK
THAT YOU ALL HAVE BEEN DOING.
[Paper rustles]
Ocean says, ALL YOU ACTUALLY DO
IS PUT THIS POSTER UNDER YOUR
LIGHT SWITCH SO YOU CAN BE REMINDED
TO TURN OFF THE LIGHTS
WHEN YOU LEAVE THE ROOM.
Mr. Cholasta says, OKAY.
Gracen says, IT'S A STAFF AND
STUDENT CONTEST.
ARE YOU UP FOR IT?
Mr. Cholasta says, I CAN DO THAT.
[Upbeat music plays, laughter, chatter, knocking]
Lexie knocks on a door.
Lisa says, HI.
Lexie says, HI MR MADSEN, CAN YOU HELP US...
Text reads, “Mr. Madsen. Custodian.”
Lisa narrates, WE WENT AROUND
THE SCHOOL TO ASK THE STAFF
TO JOIN THE PROGRAM AND WE
CHALLENGED THEM TO SEE WHO
COULD SAVE THE MOST ELECTRICITY
BY TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS.
Mr. Madsen says, YES, ABSOLUTELY.
I CAN DO THAT.
[Upbeat music plays, knocking]
A woman with long blonde hair pulled into a ponytail opens a door. Text beside her reads, “Ms. Wease. Teacher.”
Lexei asks, HI MS. WEASE CAN WE
HANG OUT WITH YOU IN THE
STAFF ROOM?
Ms. Wease says, I'M SORRY, IT'S STAFF ONLY.
[Background chatter]
Lisa narrates, THE CREW DIDN'T
GET THAT REQUEST ACCEPTED,
BUT, MS WEASE COULDN’T
SAY NO TO JOINING THE EFFORT,
AND SHE AGREED TO THE CHALLENGE.
Gracen says, AND THERE’S ALSO A CONTEST.
IT'S US AGAINST THE TEACHERS. ARE YOU IN?
Ms. Wease says, WE'RE IN.
Mr. Cholasta asks, Lisa, HEY, ARE YOU NEW HERE?
[Upbeat music plays, laughter, background chatter]
Kyle and Sigfried stand in a hallway. Lisa, Hijab, Ocean, Lexie and Gracen run past them.
Sigfried asks, HEY, WHAT ARE YOU UP TO?
[Giggling]
Lisa says, WE WERE JUST SPREADING
ELI'S MESSAGE AROUND SCHOOL.
Sigfried says, OKAY, WELL, I HEARD THAT
NEXT, YOU WANT TO EXPAND
TO A NEIGHBORING SCHOOL, RIGHT?
Lexie says, YES, IT'S A HIGH SCHOOL.
Sigfried says BUT BEFORE WE GET
WALKING, LET'S WORK ON OUR TALKING.
Hijab says, I'M NERVOUS.
Gracen says, I'M NERVOUS TOO.
[Upbeat music plays]
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
Lisa narrates, RUNNING AROUND
SCHOOL WITH THE ELI CREW
USED UP A LOT OF OUR ENERGY,
BUT THE MESSAGE IS BEING SPREAD.
CUT DOWN ON ENERGY USE,
THE ELECTRIC KIND THAT IS.
[Click]
Lisa narrates, TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS
WHEN YOU DON'T NEED THEM
SAVES A LOT OF ELECTRICITY.
[Click]
Lisa narrates, BUT HEY, NOT NOW.
THANKS TO ADVANCES
IN TECHNOLOGY,
THERE ARE ALSO SUPER
EFFICIENT BULBS WE CAN USE.
ONE OF THEM IS CALLED
AN L.E.D. BULB.
IT STANDS FOR LIGHT
EMITTING DIODE.
Text beneath a bulb reads, “Light Emitting Diode.”
Lisa narrates, L.E.D. BULBS USE
WAY LESS ENERGY AND THEY
LAST AT LEAST FIFTEEN TIMES
LONGER THAN REGULAR BULBS.
[Popping, upbeat music continues]
Lisa narrates, REPLACING REGULAR
BULBS WITH L.E.D.’S IS ANOTHER
BRIGHT IDEA.
IT'S SHOCKINGLY EASY.
Text by a photograph of Lisa reads, “Bright,” “Shocking” and “Charge.”
Lisa narrates, YOU'LL GET A
CHARGE OUT OF IT.
I'LL SEE MYSELF OUT NOW IN.
Lisa, Kyle, Sigfried and the children play in the school gymnasium.
The electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
Text reads, “Green Squad.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Sigfried, Kyle, Hijab, Ocean, Lexie and Gracen sit in a school library.
Sigfried narrates, TO TRY TO PERSUADE
STUDENTS AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL
UP THE STREET TO SAVE ENERGY.
Sigfried asks, HOW ABOUT WE START
BRAINSTORMING SOME SLOGANS?
Sigfried narrates, WE DECIDED TO
COME UP WITH NEW SLOGANS
TO INSPIRE THEM TO TURN OFF
THEIR LIGHTS.
Lexie says, WHAT ABOUT LIKE, DON'T
BE A FOOL, SAVE FOSSIL FUEL?
Text beside her reads, “Don’t be a fool. Save fossil fuel.”
Sigfried asks, ANY OTHER IDEAS?
Ocean suggests, TURN OFF THE
LIGHTS TO MAKE THE FUTURE BRIGHTER!
Text reads, “Turn off the lights to make the future brighter!”
Sigfried says, I LOVE THE LIGHT PUNS. OKAY.
ANYONE ELSE? GRACEN?
Gracen says, NO EXCUSE FOR ENERGY MISUSE!
Text reads, “No excuse for energy misuse!”
Sigfried says, I LIKE IT. I LIKE IT.
Ocean says, BE COOL. SAVE FUEL.
Text reads, “Be cool. Save fuel.”
Kyle says, THAT'S MY FAVORITE, ACTUALLY.
Sigfried says, I REALLY LIKE
TURN OFF THE LIGHTS
TO MAKE THE FUTURE BRIGHT.
Kyle says, I WAS GOING TO WRITE
DOWN ‘IF IT'S NOT IN USE,
TURN OFF THE JUICE.’
BUT WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?
A voice says, YEAH.
[Upbeat music plays]
Sigfried says, TO TALK TO HIGH SCHOOLERS,
I THINK ALL WE REALLY NEED
TO CHANGE ABOUT OUR LANGUAGE
IS THAT...
Sigfried narrates, AND THEN WE CAME
UP WITH IDEAS FOR THE PRESENTATION.
HOW DO YOU TALK TO OLDER KIDS
WHO YOU DON'T KNOW?
AND HOW DO YOU MAKE IT FUN?
Kyle says, WHEN YOU TALK
WITH OLDER KIDS IN GENERAL,
YOU'RE TELLING THEM
WHAT'S IMPORTANT TO YOU.
AND A LOT OF THE TIME PEOPLE
LISTEN TO THAT, YOU KNOW?
SO I THINK IF YOU JUST GO AND
YOU TALK TO THEM LIKE A FRIEND
AND YOU DON'T TALK UP TO THEM,
YOU DON'T TALK DOWN TO THEM,
JUST TELL THEM THIS IS IMPORTANT.
I THINK NO MATTER WHAT
THEY’LL LISTEN.
Sigfried says, WE SHOULD DO
SOME LIKE INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS,
LIKE POSE QUESTIONS
TO THE AUDIENCE
SO THAT THEY HAVE A CHANCE
TO SORT OF INTERACT WITH YOU.
Kyle says, SO I THINK YOU GUYS
HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB
WORKING ON THE MESSAGING
WITH SIG HERE.
BUT NOW I THINK WE NEED
TO MAKE SURE
THAT THE PRESENTATION
IS CLEAR AND FUN.
SO I THINK THAT WE NEED TO DO
A DRY RUN BEFORE WE GO OVER
JUST TO PRACTICE THINGS
AND MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE
ALL ON THE SAME PAGE
ABOUT THE PRESENTATION.
WHAT YOU GUYS SAY?
The children say, YES. YEAH.
Text reads, “Yep.” “Yes.” “Yup.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle stands at the bottom of a short staircase. Sigfried sits on the top step at the side. Gracen, Lexie, Hijab and Ocean stand on a platform at the top of the stairs.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle says, ALL RIGHT, EVERYBODY.
SO FIRST THING I WANT YOU GUYS
TO DO IS TELL ME YOUR NAME.
Gracen says, I’M GRACEN..
Kyle says, I CAN'T HEAR YOU GRACEN.
[Laughing]
Gracen says, I’M GRACEN.
Kyle asks, WHO?
Gracen shouts, I’M GRACEN!
Kyle says, GRACEN, NICE TO MEET YOU.
[Laughing]
Lexie says, I'M LEXIE.
Kyle says, PERFECT.
Hijab says, I’M HIJAB.
Kyle says, LITTLE LOUDER FOR ME.
Hijab says, I’M HIJAB.
Kyle says, I’M WHO!?
[Laughter]
Hijab says, I’M HIJAB.
Kyle says, PERFECT. AND...
Ocean says, I’M OCEAN.
Kyle says, I CAN HEAR YOU GUYS
LOUD AND CLEAR.
THAT IS A FANTASTIC START.
SO THE MOST IMPORTANT THING
IS THAT WHEN YOU'RE
IN THIS BIG OF A SPACE, IT'S
TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE CAN HEAR
YOU BECAUSE YOU CAN SAY
THE BEST THINGS IN THE WORLD,
BUT NOBODY'S HEARING YOU....
UNFORTUNATELY, WE'RE NOT GOING
TO GET THE MESSAGE ACROSS.
SO THEN I HEARD
WE HAVE AN INTRODUCTION....
A voice says, MAYBE?
Kyle says, TAKE IT AWAY.
Gracen says, HELLO, THE NAME OF THE CLASS,
WE ARE HERE TO EXPLAIN
ELI THE EEL.
Ocean says, I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU.
DO YOU KNOW ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING?
SIT DOWN IF YOU DON’T.
STAND UP IF YOU DO.
Gracen says, I ALSO HAVE A QUESTION.
DO YOU THINK LIGHTS
ANYTHING TO DO WITH
CLIMATE CHANGE?
Sigfried says, THAT WAS SUPPOSED
TO BE THE FIRST ONE.
Sigfried says, THEY'RE NUMBERED
FOR A REASON.
Gracen says, YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO GO.....
I MEAN, YOU TOOK IT FROM ME.
Gracen says, HELLO, CLASS NAME.,.
WE ARE HERE TO EXPLAIN
ELI THE EEL.
[Frustrated sputtering, background arguing]
Kyle narrates, YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY.
THE WORSE THE DRESS REHEARSAL,
THE BETTER THE PERFORMANCE.
SO THINGS ARE DEFINITELY LOOKING
GOOD FOR THE ELI CREW.
Kyle asks, DO YOU GUYS FEEL
READY RIGHT NOW?
Question marks appear over Gracen and Ocean’s heads. Text over Lexie’s head reads, “No!” Text over Hijab’s head reads, “Yes!”
Kyle says, I THINK WE SHOULD DO
ANOTHER COUPLE OF REHEARSALS.
WHAT DO YOU GUYS SAY?
The children say, YEAH. YUP.
Text over all the children’s heads reads, “Yup!”
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Sigfried narrates, WE CAME UP
WITH SOME ZAPPY SLOGANS,
BUT MEANWHILE, I FOUND
SOME GHOSTS IN THE SCHOOL.
[Spooky oohing]
Sigfried narrates, OKAY...
NOT GHOSTS, BECAUSE THEY'RE
NOT REAL.
BUT WHAT IS REAL IS
GHOST ELETRICITY.
WE CAN'T SEE IT.
BUT GHOST ELECTRICITY IS THE POWER
THAT OUR APPLIANCES AND DEVICES
WASTE WHEN THEY'RE PLUGGED IN
BUT AREN'T BEING USED.
ABOUT THREE QUARTERS
OF THE POWER THEY EAT UP IS USED
WHEN THEY'RE NOT EVEN TURNED ON.
Lines on a power cord show animated ghosts moving past “one quarter” and “one half.” The ghosts stop at “three-quarters.”
[Spooky oohing]
Sigfried narrates, THAT'S A HUGE WASTE
THAT HAS A BIG IMPACT
ON THE ENVIRONMENT.
[Upbeat music plays, clicking]
Sigfried narrates, BUT YOU CAN BE
A GHOST HUNTER.
TRY PLUGGING INTO A POWER STRIP.
THEN YOU CAN TURN EVERYTHING OFF
WITH ONE FLICK.
SOME EVEN HAVE TIMERS
YOU CAN SAY OR JUST UNPLUG
THE THINGS YOU AREN T USING
GHOST ELECTRICITY AT ZERO,
YOU'RE MY HERO.
THAT'S ANOTHER ELECTRIFYING
SLOGAN FOR THE ELI CREW.
Text reads, “Ghost electricity at zero? You’re my hero!”
Lisa, Kyle, Sigfried, Hijab, Ocean, Lexie and Gracen hop down a school hallway.
The electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
Text reads, “Green Squad.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Lexie narrates, IT'S A BIT NERVE WRACKING
TALKING TO OLDER KIDS.
Mr. Lumsden, Kyle, Sigfried, Gracen, Ocean, Hijab and Lexie walk on a sidewalk towards a large school.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle narrates, AFTER LOTS OF WORK
REHEARSING. TEAM ELI IS READY
TO FACE A BRAND NEW AUDIENCE.
BUT WILL THEY EVEN LISTEN?
Kyle asks, WE’RE JUST A FEW MINUTES
FROM THE PRESENTATION.
HOW ARE YOU GUYS FEELING?
Lexie, Hijab, Gracen and Ocean say, NERVOUS.
[Background chatter]
Kyle says, WE HAVE NOTHING
TO BE NERVOUS ABOUT.
YOU'VE GOT A GREAT MESSAGE
AND YOU PRACTICED A WHOLE LOT.
SO I BELIEVE IN YOU GUYS,
AND I'LL BE FRONT ROW
WATCHING THE WHOLE TIME.
Ocean says, AND A LITTLE CHEER SQUAD.
[Background cheering]
Lexie says, YOU'RE OUR BIGGEST FANS.
Sigfried says, AS LONG AS YOU GUYS
HAVE CONFIDENCE IN YOURSELVES,
IT'S GOING TO COME ACROSS GREAT,
READY? HANDS IN.
Kyle says, ON THREE, ELI.
ONE, TWO, THREE. ELI
[Upbeat music plays]
A teacher announces,
WE HAVE OUR FRIENDS
FROM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
DOWN THE ROAD THAT ARE HERE
TODAY TO GIVE US A REALLY EXCITING
PRESENTATION. THEY ARE ENERGY
ENTHUSIASTS, AND WE'RE GOING
TO GIVE THEM A REALLY WARM
WELCOME TODAY.
Students in a cafeteria applaud.
[Applause, cheering]
Kyle announces, THE ELI THE EEL SQUAD!
Text reads, “The Eli the Eel Squad!
Gracen, Ocean, Lexie and Hijab stand on a table.
Gracen says, HI, I'M GRACEN.
Lexie says, HI, I'M LEXIE.
Hijab says, HI, I'M HIJAB.
Ocean says, HI, I'M OCEAN.
AND THIS IS ELI.
Gracen says, FIRST QUESTION,
DO YOU THINK LIGHTS
HAVE ANYTHING TO DO
WITH CLIMATE CHANGE?
STAND UP, YES. SIT DOWN, NO.
The students stand up.
Gracen says, YES IS THE ANSWER.
YOU CAN SIT DOWN NOW.
Lexie says, SECOND QUESTION.
YOU AS MIDDLE SCHOOLERS
CAN MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE
ON THE ENVIRONMENT.
STAND UP FOR YES.
SIT DOWN FOR NO.
The students stand up.
Lexie says, THE ANSWER IS YES,
BECAUSE IF ONE PERSON
CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE,
THAT MEANS A BUNCH OF MIDDLE
SCHOOLERS CAN MAKE A BIGGER
DIFFERENCE TO SAVE OUR PLANET.
YOU GUYS CAN SIT DOWN NOW.
Hijab says, THIRD QUESTION.
DOES ELECTRICITY HAVE ANYTHING
TO DO WITH FOSSIL FUELS?
STAND FOR YES.
SIT DOWN FOR NO.
The students stand up.
[Sneakers squeak]
Hijab says, THE ANSWER IS YES,
BECAUSE MOST ELECTRICITY,
IT COMES FROM FOSSIL FUELS.
Ocean says, FOURTH QUESTION.
DO YOU GUYS KNOW
ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING?
STAND UP FOR YES.
SIT DOWN FOR NO.
The students stand up.
Ocean says, YOU GUYS CAN SIT DOWN NOW.
Gracen says, WE WANT YOU TO JOIN
THE MOVEMENT.
Lexie says, WE HAVE BEEN
TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS
BECAUSE WE WANT TO SAVE ENERGY.
WE WANT TO STOP CLIMATE CHANGE
AND FOSSIL FUELS ARE BAD.
Hijab says, YOU SHOULD CARE BECAUSE
CLIMATE CHANGE AFFECTS ALL OF US.
WE CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE.
COLLECTIVE ACTION IS IMPORTANT.
Lexie says, WE HAVE MADE OUR OWN
ELI THE EEL STARTER KITS,
AND WE HAVE MADE POSTERS
TO PUT UP UNDER YOUR LIGHT
SWITCH TO REMIND YOU.
[Light switches click]
Lexie says, AND WE HAVE ALSO MADE
SOME CUBES WITH THE EIL HEAD ON IT.
TO KNOW HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY
WE HAVE BEEN WASTING.
Gracen says, THIS IS OUR WAY OF DOING
AN ELI STARTER KIT.
WELL, YOU GUYS CAN DO IT
YOUR WAY.
Lexie says, RAISE YOUR HAND
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.
[Upbeat music plays]
A student asks, HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY
IN CANADA DO WE WASTE EVERY DAY?
A second student asks, HOW MUCH LIKE ELECTRICITY
DO WE HAVE TO SAVE IN ORDER TO
POTENTIALLY STOP CLIMATE CHANGE?
A third student asks, HOW LONG WOULD IT
TAKE FOR, LIKE, CLIMATE CHANGE TO STOP?
A fourth student asks, HOW MUCH PERMANENT
DAMAGE HAVE WE DONE TO OUR PLANET?
A fifth student asks WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN
IF WE DON'T TAKE ACTION NOW?
A sixth student asks WILL THIS ACTUALLY
MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Lexie says, IT DOES SEEM SMALL,
BUT IF WE ALL WORK TOGETHER,
IT WILL ALL ADD UP.
Ocean says, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING.
WE WERE VERY NERVOUS.
[Applause]
A seventh student says, I THOUGHT
THE PRESENTATION WAS REALLY GOOD.
IT'S INSPIRING.
An eighth student says, I NEVER REALLY
REALIZED HOW MUCH WE WERE DAMAGING
OUR PLANET WITH ELECTRICITY.
I THOUGHT THEY HAD APRETTY
IMPORTANT MESSAGE BEHIND THEIR
PRESENTATION.
I THOUGHT IT WAS PRETTY
MEANINGFUL AND IMPORTANT.
A tenth student says, I NEVER KNEW
ANY OF THIS STUFF, AND I'M GOING
TO TELL A LOT MORE PEOPLE
TO STOP USING ELECTRICITY
AND HELP CLIMATE CHANGE.
An eleventh student says, THE
PRESENTATION MADE ME THINK
OF OTHER KINDS OF THINGS,
NOT JUST TURNING OFF
LIGHT SWITCHES.
A twelfth student says, I THINK THEY ACTUALLY DID
A GREAT JOB, CONSIDERING THEY
WOULD HAVE BEEN REALLY NERVOUS.
‘CAUSE A BUNCH OF OLDER KIDS
WERE SITTING THERE LISTENING,
WATCHING THEIR EVERY MOVE AND
LISTENING TO THEIR EVERY WORD.
I THINK THEY DID GREAT.
A thirteenth student says, I THINK
SOMEBODY OR US WILL START LIKE
START A CLUB OR WHATEVER TO LIKE,
START THE MOVEMENT OF IT,
AND THEN IT'LL PROBABLY
SPREAD ACROSS THE SCHOOL.
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle narrates, THE ELI CREW NAILED THE
PRESENTATION AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.
LIKE THEM SCHOOL KIDS ALL OVER
THE WORLD ARE TAKING ACTION
AND MAKING THEIR VOICES
HEARD ON AN EPIC SCALE.
SCHOOL CLIMATE STRIKE PROTESTS
BEGAN IN TWENTY-EIGHTEEN
TO DEMAND ACTION ON CLIMATE
CHANGE AND HAS GROWN INTO
AN INTERNATIONAL MOVEMENT
WITH MILLIONS OF KIDS AND ADULTS
JOINING IT.
THEY RAISE TONS OF AWARENESS
AND PUT PRESSURE ON GOVERNMENTS
ABOUT THINGS LIKE REDUCING FOSSIL
FUELS NO MATTER WHAT YOUR AGES,
YOU CAN BE AN INFLUENCER
BY SPREADING THE MESSAGE
YOUR SCHOOL, FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE YOU FEEL
ELECTRIFYING BUZZ LIKE ELI
THE ELECTRIC EEL.
[Electricity crackles]
The electronic voice says, GREEN SQUAD.
[Upbeat music plays]
Outside on a grassy field, Lexie, Gracen, Ocean and Hijab face Sigfried and Kyle.
Kyle says, CONGRATULATIONS
ON THE PRESENTATION.
I THINK YOU GUYS DID A WONDERFUL
JOB AND YOU GOT YOUR MESSAGE.
OUT SUPER CLEAR.
Sigfried asks, SO HOW DO YOU FEEL
THE PRESENTATION WENT?
Lexie says, I THINK IT WAS PRETTY WELL.
Gracen says, I THINK IT WENT OKAY.
Sigfried asks, YOU THINK YOUR MESSAGE
CAME ACROSS WELL?
The children say, YEAH. YEAH. YES,
Sigfried says, IT WAS FANTASTIC.
I THINK IT REALLY CAME
ACROSS THE PASSION
THAT YOU GUYS HAVE
AS WELL AS THE KNOWLEDGE.
AND I THINK YOU REALLY HAVE
A SPARK AND I'M EXCITED
TO SEE WHAT YOU DO WITH THAT
IN THE FUTURE BECAUSE IF YOU
CAN MAKE A CHANGE WITH ONE SCHOOL,
IMAGINE WHAT YOU MIGHT BE ABLE
TO DO LATER ON.
[Upbeat music plays]
Lexie says, THANKS FOR HELPING US
WITH ALL OF OUR ELI THE EEL STAR
KITS AND HELPING US BUILD UP
THAT CONFIDENCE.
Kyle says, THE REAL QUESTION IS
WHEN'S THE NEXT PRESENTATION?
WHERE'S THE NEXT SCHOOL, RIGHT?
Lexie says, THAT S A GOOD QUESTION.
Sigfried asks, DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL
LIKE YOU SORT OF WANT TO START
DOING MORE?
Hijab, Lexie, Ocean and Gracen say, YEAH.
Kyle says, I'M SO EXCITED TO CHECK
BACK IN WITH YOU GUYS AND SEE
HOW MUCH ENERGY YOU HAVEN'T
USED IN OUR CHECK IN.
GATHER UP.
The group hugs.
Everyone says, BYE!
[Gentle music plays]
Later, Kyle and Sigfried walk down the school hallway.
Sigfried says, WOW, WHAT A
FANTASTIC DAY.
[Click]
Kyle says, OH, I GUESS I
SHOULD TURN THE LIGHTS OFF.
Kyle turns off lights in the school.
[Click]
The Green Squad makes a human pyramid with Sigfried, Eric and Kyle on the bottom row and Lisa and Skakira on the top.
Text reads, “Squad Tip.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle stands behind a table. He holds a disposable plastic water bottle in his hand. There is a reusable water bottle on the table in front of him.
Kyle says, YOU KNOW THAT
ADULTS CAN BE REALLY BUSY
SOMETIMES. LIKE, SOMETIMES EVEN
TOO BUSY TO CARE ABOUT PLANET EARTH.
DOES THAT MAKE YOU MAD?
THAT REALLY MAKES ME MAD.
Kyle squeezes the plastic bottle.
[Cracking]
He says, GROWING UP, I WAS ON A FILM
SET WITH A BUNCH OF ADULTS.
SEE THE ACTORS AND CREW
WERE STILL USING THESE
THROWAWAY PLASTIC BOTTLES
AND WE WANTED TO SWITCH TO THESE
REUSABLE WATER BOTTLES ON SET.
PROBLEM WAS THAT WE WERE YOUNG
AND TELLING ALL THESE GROWN UPS
WITH THESE BIG, IMPORTANT JOBS
AND SEEMED SUPER BUSY WAS
REALLY TOUGH.
BUT YOU CAN'T MAKE A CHANGE
BY NOT SAYING ANYTHING.
SO FINALLY I ASKED MY MOM AND
SHE TOLD ME TO JUST TELL THEM.
SOMETIMES THE ADULTS
DON'T REALIZE THAT THINGS AREN'T
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
AND SOMETIMES IT CAN BE
JUST TOO BUSY TO NOTICE.
SO WE SPOKE UP AND
THEY FINALLY MADE THE SWITCH.
SO DON'T BE AFRAID TO TALK TO
ADULTS AND MAKE A CHANGE.
The Green Squad poses. Text reads, “Check-In.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle, Shakira, Lisa, Eric and Sigfried sit around a small table with a laptop computer on it.
Lisa says, LET'S CHECK IN WITH TEAM ELI.
Lexie, Gracen and Hijab appear on the computer screen.
They says, HI, LISA.
Lexie says, IT WAS REALLY FUN
TO HANG OUT WITH YOU.
YOUR MATH SKILLS ARE AMAZING.
[Chuckling]
Lexie says, EVERY FRIDAY WE GO INTO
CLASSROOMS WITH THIS CLIPBOARD
AND SEE HOW MANY BLOCKS
THEY HAVE TO REPRESENT
ONE KILOWATT AN HOUR.
Mr. Lumsden asks, ARE WE SAVING
MORE ENERGY THAN WE EVEN EXPECTED?
A voice says, YES, A LOT.
Lisa says, WOW.
Gracen says, WE WERE HAPPY THAT
IT WAS GOING AROUND SO WELL
AND THAT WE WERE SAVING
A LOT OF ENERGY.
Hijab says, LAST WEEK, IN TOTAL,
WE HAD TWO HUNDRED AND FOUR
CUBES WE SAVED BY ALL THE CLASSES.
Mr. Lumsden asks, WAS OUR CLASSROOM THE BEST?
A voice says, NO.
[Mr. Lumsden laughs]
Eric says, SOMETIMES IT'S LIKE THAT.
Gracen and Ocean fill the bottom of a tank with cubes.
Mr. Lumsden asks, WHAT ARE
YOU FOLKS UP TO, THERE?
[Cubes rattle]
Gracen says, MAKING ELI A HOME.
Mr. Lumsden asks, ARE YOU MAKING
HIM A MESS OR A HOME?
[Laughing]
Ocean, Gracen and Lexie stand in front of a window. Behind the window, the Eli the eel stuffy lies in the tank.
They say, ELI IN HIS NEW HOME FOR
THE WHOLE SCHOOL TO SEE.
Mr. Lumsden says, THE CLASS HAS
ACTUALLY ADAPTED THE ELI KITS
AND THIS WAS ACTUALLY
THE COOLEST PART THAT I SAW,
WHEN THE STUDENTS HAD THE
CHANCE TO SHOW HOW THEY COULD
SAVE ENERGY AND SEE THEIR
TANGIBLE GROWTH.
IT REALLY TOOK OFF.
THEY STARTED LOOKING FOR DIFFERENT
WAYS THAT THEY COULD SAVE
EXTRA ENERGY AND MAKE THEIR ELI
GROW QUICKER.
Lisa says, THE AMOUNT OF CUBES
WAS ASTRONOMICAL AND THAT’S SO
MANY KILOWATT HOURS OF ENERGY
FROM SO MANY CLASSES.
I THINK THEY SAID AT ONE POINT
THEY HAD TWO HUNDRED AND FOUR
AND IT'S SO MUCH ELECTRICITY.
Sigfried says, IT'S REALLY IMPACTFUL,
LIKE VISUALLY SEEING HOW MUCH
THEY'VE SAVED.
Shakira says, YEAH, I LOVED
THE LITTLE CASE THAT THEY MADE
WITH THE ELI AND ALL THE CUBES.
AND IT GETS THE WHOLE SCHOOL
MORE EXCITED TO PARTICIPATE
AS WELL.
Lisa says, YEAH, COMPETITION
ALWAYS GETS PEOPLE.
Shakira says, YES.
Eric says, I THINK BY HAVING
THESE INITIATIVES IN SCHOOLS,
SOMETIMES YOU CAN HAVE A
LIGHT BULB MOMENT.
[Laughter]
Lexie says, IT WAS FUN
GOING INTO ALL THE PLACES THAT
ADULTS GO IN.
Mr. Lumsden says, I THINK THE TEACHERS,
ALTHOUGH DOING WELL, LAGGED
A LITTLE BEHIND THE STUDENTS,
IRONICALLY ENOUGH, IN THIS CASE,
ALL THE TEACHERS I NOTICED BOUGHT
IN AND EMBRACED THE PROJECT.
BUT IT WAS FUNNY TO SEE THAT
THIS WAS REALLY STUDENT DRIVEN.
Shakira says, I REALLY LOVE THAT
HOW HE SAID IT WAS A STUDENT
DRIVEN INITIATIVE. THAT JUST
SHOWS THAT THEY'RE TAKING
RESPONSIBILITY AND THAT
THEY'RE DOING THIS THEMSELVES
AND THEY'RE BEATING
THE TEACHERS IS PRETTY GREAT.
SO THE TEACHERS,
THEY GOTTA STEP UP.
Eric says, SO REFRESHING TO SEE
STUDENTS BEAT TEACHERS.
Shakira and Sigfried say, YES.
Mr. Lumsden says, I WAS SUPER PROUD
OF WHAT THE KIDS DID AT THE
HIGH SCHOOL.
IT'S TOUGH FOR ANY GRADE SIX
TO SPEAK IN FRONT OF THEIR CLASS,
BUT TO GO TO A DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENT
AND DIFFERENT SCHOOL AND SPEAK
TO OLDER KIDS.
AND I WAS HAPPY HOW THOSE GUYS
PRESENTED THEMSELVES.
I THINK THEY DID AN AWESOME JOB.
Lexie says, WE WERE A BIT NERVOUS
AND ONCE WE DID THE PRESENTATION
IT WAS LIKE, BOOM, DONE.
Sigfried says, IT WAS INCREDIBLE
WORKING WITH TEAM ELI
WHEN THEY ACTUALLY DID
THE PRESENTATION,
THEY WERE A LITTLE BIT
APPREHENSIVE AT FIRST
AND KIND OF NERVOUS, RIGHTLY SO,
BUT THEY DID REALLY, REALLY WELL.
Lexie says, HE SAID THAT WE DID
A GOOD JOB.
[Green squad applauds, upbeat music continues]
Lisa says, YEAH.
Mr. Lumsden says, I HAVEN'T HEARD
ANY UPDATES ABOUT HOW THE HIGH
SCHOOL DID.
I'D BE CURIOUS TO SEE.
I KNOW THEY WOULD HAVE
A TOUGH TASK AHEAD OF THEM.
Kyle says, YOU CAN'T FORCE
SOMEONE TO CHANGE,
BUT YOU CAN INSPIRE PEOPLE
JUST LIKE THE ELI
CREW DID AT THEIR SCHOOL.
THEY'VE CREATED A PROGRAM
THAT IS DEFINITELY GOING
TO HAVE AN IMPACT ON THAT
SCHOOL FOR YEARS TO COME.
Sigfried says, I THINK WE REALLY
MADE AN IMPACT WHEN THEY WENT
TO THE HIGH SCHOOL AND EVEN
IF THE HIGH SCHOOL ISN’T KEEPING
UP AS WELL AS THEY ARE.
AT LEAST WE SORT OF GAVE
THAT INFORMATION TO THEM.
AND IT REALLY MADE
AN IMPACT ON TEAM ELI
BECAUSE THEY SORT OF FEEL MORE
CONFIDENT NOW TO TAKE INITIATIVE
AND DO THOSE SORTS OF THINGS
BY THEMSELVES.
Kyle says, TEAM ELI
YOU GUYS WERE ELECTRIFYING.
The Green Squad cheers, GO, TEAM, GO!
End credits roll.
[Upbeat music plays]
A child says, WHEE!
Colourful text reads, “tvo kids.”
[Child giggles]
A blue eye peers out of the Apartment Eleven Productions logo. Text beneath it reads, “Apartment Eleven Productions.”
[Squeaking]
